After leaving parliament to argue over details of the food trade you return home, only to be met by Isla at the door.

“Hi love” you say, leaning in to kiss her on the cheek “how's the forest doing?”

“The forest is fine” says Isla, kissing you back “but we have a problem.”

You sigh “what did Jal do now?”

“Nothing yet” says Isla with a laugh “but the day isn't over, no we have a diplomatic problem.”

XXX

“Are you sure this is a problem?” you say to Isla, after she's told you what's going on “I mean, good for them, they found each other.”

You are standing in a camp on the border of your realm, your army has been practising for various counter-invasion plans, even the possibility of invasion from Dornmer.

You and Isla enter the tent to see one of your succubi soldiers sat on a bench with a young man, well, perhaps 'boy' would be more appropriate, you'd guess anywhere from 16 to 18 years of age. He's wearing travelling clothes and has a small pack at his side. She has her arm around his waist and looks nervous. Standing around them are four other succubi soldiers, some looking amused, some looking angry.

They all stand to attention when you walk in, even the one on the bench, the young man just freezes, looking awestruck.

“At ease” you tell everyone, examining the pair of them.
>>
“So” you say “I've been told quite a tale: firstly that some of my soldiers have been conducting patrols into Dornmer, despite being told not to. And secondly that on those patrols, or perhaps we should say 'parties', they've been getting friendly with the locals. And one has gotten friendly enough to awake a potential sorcerers powers. Quite frankly that would be enough, but then you bought him back with you. But it get's better: he told his family where he was going, and they ran to their lords castle claiming he has been entranced and kidnapped, did I get that right?”

The young boy is still slightly stunned by your presence, the four succubi soldiers are trying not to frown or laugh.

The main culprit swallows nervously and looks scared “My queen...” she says, and then trails off.

How are you going to handle this? (pick only 1)

Wait what? How is this even remotly about the dumb love story? This is a serious diplomatic incident if our soldiers have been crossing foreign borders on a regular basis. And not even Dalvin, how is this not for a military tribunal?
>>
>>45050989
>if it turns out to be actual love
I don't think love was really implied beyond that for some reason she took her boytoy with her, which can be for all sorts of reasons, frankly they are succubi.
>>

At first I suspected tru luf story too, but what would be way funnier is if he got sorcerer powers because he's the succubus' grandchild or something

>>45051137
There is a non-zero chance this is is a continuation of our ongoing troubles with the Dornmer nobility, which IS a longstanding plot thread, not really one of the important ones to be fair, but its not like the world stands still and its something that really would have ahppened sooner or later.
Why its Sireyis business instead of our diplomatic choir (the literal choir of angels we got), I have no idea though.

>>45050906
>Since when do we border parts of Dornmer that aren't Dalvin
Once you got time.
>>
>>45050906
>>45051217
Sure.

You don't border parts of Dornmer (except Dalvin) but both you and Dornmer border the orc/beastmen tribal lands.

Your army patrols the tribal lands beyond your borders regularly. Sometimes patrols can be gone for days, they're done more for training than out of real worry of an attack.

As you've just found out, sometimes patrols that head in the rough direction of Dornmer, go further than they're supposed to.
>>
>>45051360
>but both you and Dornmer border the orc/beastmen tribal lands
For some reason I was always under the impression Dalvin was basically the stretch of Dornmer that bordered the tribal lands, that was just all lumped together because it was virtually uninhabitable anyway. How many Duchies/Baronier form the northern border then? If Oreaia continues to grow we're likely going to border them too.
>>
>>45051405
>For some reason I was always under the impression Dalvin was basically the stretch of Dornmer that bordered the tribal lands, that was just all lumped together because it was virtually uninhabitable anyway.

Pretty much, yes. Dalvin is almost all of the northern border of Dornmer

>How many Duchies/Baronier form the northern border then?

2 others have very small parts on the northern border with the tribal lands, these have occassional faced raiding parties but not invasions from the tribal lands. There are steep mountains and a few small passes that the orcs etc can get through.

>If Oreaia continues to grow we're likely going to border them too.

Possibly.

In short Dalvin is most of the border, just not all of it.
>>
You stride over to the nervous looking succubus “name?” you ask quietly

“Lacya, your Majesty” she says, stammering a little.

“What happened?” you ask “I mean, not the patrols, that will be dealt with separately; I mean with you and...” you look over at the young man.

“An-anthony your divine, er, royalship” he says, finally unfreezing enough to speak.

“with you and Anthony here?” you ask Lacya.

Lacya looks like she'd rather be anywhere, in one of the Hells even, than here answering your questions right now.

Still, as you wait, she takes a deep breath, and starts to explain...

On one of the recreational patrols that some of the army sometimes takes into Dornmer, Lacya and her squad spent an evening mixing with the young men and women of a small town, disguised as human travellers from another part of the kingdom.

Late in the evening, some of the succubi took a partner (or two) to bed, but when Lacya and Anthony were concluding their business.

“You what?” you ask, not quite believing what Lacya just said.

“When his powers started to manifest and lit up the room around us” she says with a small smile “I got caught up in the moment and, umm, I kinda um, I kinda gifted him some of my own magic to tie us together.”

You take a moment to steady yourself before speaking “you made a pact with him?” you ask, your voice carefully controlled “you made an infernal pact granting him more magical power?”

“Not a formal one!” protests Lacya “more of a gift really. Besides, my powers will recover my Queen, I can still serve.”

Anthony decides now is a good time to speak, despite his awe of you “She didn't force me or trick me your royaltyship, and I...I love her” he blushes red as he says this. Lacya gives him a brilliant smile, you resist the urge to scream.
>>
You can see why Isla bought this to you. Your soldiers going partying in Dornmer is a problem, but one that can be handled by your government. Your succubi making infernal pacts with citizens of Dornmer, well...that's just the sort of propaganda tool the Dornmer nobles need to cast you as an enemy of the realm, and not even the churches can be certain of reining them in.

Still, this is fixable: you can use your deific powers to instantly dissolve this pact, as unpleasant as that will be for both of them. Or a priest of whichever gods Anthony follows could do the same, though if you recall the ritual usually calls for extended atonement such as prayer, punishment, fasting and so on.

They might not want to do so willingly, so you'd need to persuade or simply order them to comply though.

You could let it stand, but just take steps to ensure that nothing else like this happens again.

Breaking the (magical) bond they have too quickly will be a physical and mental shock. Not harmful in the long term, but not fun.

I might be wrong, but I'm fairly sure this is a regular infernal pact, and not similar to the succubi pair bonding. So dissolving it should have nothing to do with their romance.
(Her likely extremly heavy punishment might htough, but thats her own fault.)
>>
You spend time talking with them, explaining how them being together could result in a lot of people getting hurt in Oreia, and in Dornmer.

It's not easy, and part of you hates putting harsh political realities ahead of what are innocent matters of the heart, but you know it has to be done.

In time, they understand, and although neither of them like it, they agree to have their pact annulled. After one last embrace and a tearful goodbye, you teleport young Anthony to Dalvin. The ritual can be done in a number of different ways, but you know Poppy will have a softer touch than others.

At the Church in Dalvin, after explaining things to Poppy she directs Anthony to start building a fire to heat up water for a bath, mostly to keep him out of the room you suspect.

“What?” you ask her, you can tell she has something on her mind.

“The ritual of purification calls for rejecting all demonic influence” says the halfling girl you went to school with “I'm going to have to spend hours explaining to him why what he did was morally wrong you realise.”

“Poppy” you say in an exasperated tone “I can't risk war between Oreia and Dalvin-”

“I never said you should!” she says sharply “and I get that, war, death, politics it's all messy. I'm just saying that for this one young man, to break their bond, I'm going to have to turn him against someone he loves. I understand why, but I don't like it.”

“And what makes you think I do?” you match her ire with your own.

Poppy doesn't reply, you both stand there silent for a few minutes.

Then Poppy pats you on the back and says “keep reminding yourself why you're doing this Sireyi: go see Sofia and Jal and then spend some time with your kids.”

XXX

Much later, after taking Poppy's advice, you are sat with your generals, none of them look happy.

“Well” you say “how long has this been going on?”
>>
They exchange glances, finally one speaks “a few months as far as wel can tell. WE think it started when one of the wide patrols got lost and ended up in Dalvin. They found their way back, but these stories spread as they tend to do and...” she spreads her hands helplessly.

“And some of the other soldiers got it into their heads to go and visit” continues another “to start with it was just wandering around towns, spending a day as a mortal.”

“Then it grew from there” says another quietly.

“And how long have you known?” you ask, looking them each in the eyes.

Answers range from finding out just now, to having known for weeks. You don't think they are lying to you.

“Why?” you ask them “why are they doing this?”

“We're used to fighting for our lives daily” says one general, with a sour twist to her features “Oreia was a dream come true, peace, safety, a chance to live without fear. But after some time some of our soldiers started getting bored. Oh they tried to deal with it, as did we: additional exercises, competitions, their partners trying to make their love lives more exciting. The fact remains that we are perfectly safe here, and it's wonderful but it's not what we're used to.”

“And” says another general “mortals fascinate us, they always have. When our race was born corrupting mortals is what we were made for, how could we not find them interesting? I know that those that have been sneaking into Dornmer should be punished, but I don't blame them for wanting to.”

You pause, considering your response carefully. You need to stop this happening again, and punish those responsible somehow.

the purification spell/.ritual for breaking demonic pacts involves admitting that what they did was wrong/sinful.

Since pacts are often for power that's not usually a problem. This pact was (arguably) for love, so breaking the pact means he has to accept that was wrong.

I'd say thats pretty relevant information to us, given that several voters said they don't want to break up the relationship, we couldn't know that ritual would involve rejecting making the relationship rather than accepting making the pact was wrong, because it was.

Divine magic isn't just 'cast spell get result', it's payer and magic.

For simple spells and quick-casting stuff (Combat magic) this has little impact.

For other stuff, the spell is combined with a religious ceremony or other worship.

The spell that both breaks a demonic pact and cleanses a persons soul of the evil of doing so is supposed to stop their soul going to Hell when they die, and prevent then doing the same thing again.

This involves prayer, acts of penance (giving to charity, good works, physical suffering etc) and above all acknowledging and accepting that what they did was wrong.

A standard infernal pact is a mortal putting their soul at risk in return for power. Obviously this case is different, but the standard ritual of atonement was designed to deal with the typical pact.

Now since the power comes from a Goddess (Velya) it could probably work if the spell is used without the religious trappings.

I will call for a revote in 10 minutes, please ask any questions you want to in that time.

Good, hopefully with the parliaments decision to leverage our trade we can get those summonings going soon-ish and maybe even regular visiting between the nations, or at least Dalvin.

After talking to her Poppy understands that it is only the magical effects of the pact that need to be removed. If Anthony still has feelings for Lacya that's his own business. You realise that you probably need some sort of rule or law about making pacts with mortals (within Oreia and outside it). It might not prevent things happening in the heat of the moment, but at least everyone will know what the rules are.

XXX

You discuss options with the generals and after a lot of discussion you settle on simply banning patrols that go too close to Dornmer, and leave the matter of disciplining those who have already offended in the hands of the generals.

You know you'll need to inform the government of Dornmer about these excursions, as well as the fact that they won't be happening any more. Hopefully your diplomats can smooth that one over for you.

You also set the generals working on how to administer and issue short-term passes to Kelsoreth, the city of the dark elves. Once they have that sorted you'll give parliament the same problem. Although your mortal population in Oreia is rising, it's still very small.

Hopefully a city of dark elves will be able to deal with an influx of succubi tourists.

XXX

The next few days are mostly without incident: you get to spend time with your family and deal with minor matters in Oreia.
>>
Then politics rears its ugly head again.

“How did they come across them?” you ask, once again you are sat in conference with your generals. One of the wide patrols found something.

“They saw a meeting of the clans, what looked like a market” says one of the generals “and decided to see what was happening. After all it could have been the prelude to an alliance of some sort.”

“And then they found the weapons traders?” you ask “how did they know they were from Orlath?”

“They weren't, not specifically” says the general “but they followed the merchants – actually from Oisen - and read their minds and found out that they had been sold the weapons very cheaply in Orlath provided they sell them in the tribal lands.”

“Perhaps we should review our stance on Orlath?” suggests one general “this cannot be allowed to go unpunished.”

“It's not an act of war” argues another “it's just trade. Besides, the orcs already have swords and armour: a few more won't make a difference.”

“It's better steel than they can smith themselves” argues another “besides, all the patrol saw was regular weapons, who says they won't be sold magical ones at a different place, or siege engines?”

You pinch the bridge of your nose. It seems Delax still hates you. Or maybe, just maybe you hope this could be the plot of an ordinary citizen of Orlath.

What are you going to do about weapons traders selling in the tribal lands?

Talking to parliament and Duke it is
>>
You put the question before Parliament over what to do, whilst having your diplomatic corps talk to the Duke of Oisen about what he can do for you.

As expected Parliament starts bickering about it, and negotiations and diplomacy take time. So in the mean time you decide to deal with the more pressing matters.

You've kept Pulbatorad waiting long enough, and the traders infiltrating other nations on behalf of the Lord of Life haven't done anything suspicious yet...so dealing with the upset dragon is next on your list.

You receive Pulbatorad on the mountainside not too far from your home. He's a large adult green dragon: unusually for a green dragon he has a mountain lair. He also has a large tribe of goblins that worship him as a god.

He digs his claws into the ground in frustration as he lays out his grievance “Densaug is an uppity little metallic who needs to be taught a lesson in respect!” says Pulbatorad “it is only out of respect for your wishes Divine One that I have not tracked him down and torn him apart. But if you won't do something, then I will have to!”

Densaug is a bronze dragon who has been stealing food from Pulbatorad's territory, mostly likely in an effort to impress female dragons nearby.

“How much has he taken?” you ask.

“Oh several dozen cattle, some deer, geese” says Pulbatorad, wisps of poisonous gas escaping his mouth as he huffs in frustration “it's not about that, it's a challenge to my authority, I need to maintain the respect of my worshippers, and the other dragons. If they think I am weak then my tribe will abandon me, and others will start looking to take over my domain – truce or not!” He gives you a sidelong glance “I need Densaug to stop what he's doing, or I need some obvious sign that I have a powerful ally who supports me – to scare off any attackers. A saint or goddess perhaps?”

You try not to laugh. So either you solve his problem for him, or you show him more favour than the other dragons, wonderful.
>>
What do you do?

We need some sort of dragon ambassador to solve these disputes with our authority. Don't we have some succubus loyal to us who is powerful enough to scare a few dragons?
>>
>>45054513
Give it a decade or two and Salicia can do that for us.
>>
>>45054513
>Don't we have some succubus loyal to us who is powerful enough to scare a few dragons?

Powerful enough to beat them? yes

Actually scare them? no

Dragon egos are pretty big.
>>
>>45054536
I probably could have guesses that. Is there anything short of gods that dragons don't have a problem accepting/respecting besides another dragon?

>Is there anything short of gods that dragons don't have a problem accepting/respecting besides another dragon?

Powerful demons/angels

Your mother could probably intimidate some of them.

A very few rare and powerful mortals (Heroes of the Horn-level) have managed it.
>>
>>45054466
>Promise to solve the matter and go to talk with Densaug
>>
Promise to fix it and go speak to Densaug it is, writing.
>>
“I'll deal with it” you tell Pulbatorad “in fact I'll go and speak to Densaug now. Once I'm done I will let you know.”

“Well, I suppose, yes, that is acceptable.” says Pulbatorad, accepting your decision with poor grace. You suspect he was angling for the other option.

XXX

Finding Densaugs lair doesn't take long; only the oldest and most powerful dragons can hope to hide their dens from your magic.

You stand outside his lair and call his name a few times, you might as well be polite after all.

You feel magic stirring beneath you and you take to the air as Densaug uses a spell to allow him to burrow quickly through the earth, his head appearing from the ground just next to where you were standing.

“Who dares disturb mighty and powerful Densaug!” he bellows, deepening his voice for effect “Most puissant of all-oh!” He catches sight of you and tries to look casual “Ah Divine Sireyi I was expecting um, someone else?”

Or did he just not bother to check before almost attacking you?

“I see” you say “I would like to say this is a social visit, however, Pulbatorad has been telling me that you've been raiding in his territory.”

Densaug tries to look innocent “really?” he says “taking what?”

“Cattle, deer, a few geese” you say, raising an eyebrow.

“Oh those!” says Densaug, only his head visible above the dirt “I had no idea those were his, what a mistake to make! Well, rest assured it won't happen again.” He doesn't sound sincere to you.

What do you do?

>Warn him to avoid Pulbatorad's territory, or else
>Offer him something to get him to avoid Pulbatorad's territory (options in next post)
>Ask him why he is raiding

He's courting Edonsong isn't he?
>>

That seems extremly unlikely since Ebonsong lives far away in Dalvin, and wouldn't know about cattle he steels froma dragon here.

“Densaug” you speak as plainly as you can “you need to stop raiding Pulbatorad's territory” speaking over him when he tries to protest his innocence “if you don't, then I will make you stop, understand?”

Densaug glares at you but doesn't say anything. You ask him “why are you raiding his territory anyway?”

Densaug pulls himself up out of the ground “you wouldn't understand” he says grumpily .

“Try me” you say, your hands on your hips.

“It's Sericorax!” he blurts out “her territory is next to mine, I admit it, I find a chromatic dragon attractive ok? I'm just that much of a traitor to my own kind!”

Teenagers...

Nope, it was a black dragon. You might confuse it with Nicolvren.

You are Milerna Jalweyen, angel-blooded and born paladin of Konig. You are 9 years old, and are attending paladin training at a church of Konig school.

http://pastebin.com/RE8br4uf

You're at some sort of not allowed training club, trying to get Thomas out of it. He needs to beat some sort of ridiculous challenge before he can leave.

You just beat up one of the idiots here, and now you and your friends are allowed to stay.

You realise that a lot of people in the training hall are looking at you, but you're used to that.

You also realise you didn't think this far ahead.

“Uh...” you say eloquently. Your friends all make suggestions, talking all at once.

“Now we just go” suggests Michael

“We want to talk to whoever is in charge” says Jenny

“Thomas is ready to do the challenge” says Gilyan

“Or we could shut this place down” suggests Sera quietly “tell the teachers.”

“This place looks kinda fun” says Chesi, looking around at all the boys practising weapons drill, some with their shirts off “can we stay a while?”

What do you do?

“I'm not going to make every decision for you” you tell Thomas “you pick who you want.”

“Oh right” says Thomas, looking at all of you and screwing his face up in thought “Umm, Gilly, you've faced this challenge before right?”

Gilyan nods “a long time ago.”

“Will you help me?” Thomas asks, Gilyan nods.

XXX

Before long you're all stood around watching Thomas and Gilyan fight four opponents at once.

“This is so unfair” says Sera “why four?”

“A real warrior can beat the odds” says the boy stood next to her “if they can't beat all four, then they're not good enough yet.”

Thomas is obviously outmatched and the two he is fighting rain blows down upon him with their wooden swords. If this was a proper practise match he would have been out several minutes ago, but with the fight going until he falls down or gives up, he is taking a beating.

Gilyan fares better, holding off her two attackers for a time, and getting in some hard blows of her own. When they back off a little to think how to get past her guard, she risks a look at Thomas as he takes hit after hit.

Gilyan tries to take on one of his attackers too, but three is too many for her and after a short time both she and Thomas have to admit defeat.

When the fight is over you and your friends help them both out of the ring, and lead them to benches to sit down. You hear calls and insults from an unseen source suggesting that they lost because Thomas asked a girl to help him. You ignore whoever that is.

Thomas has a blackened eye and is moving stiffly, so is Gilyan.

“So uh” says Michael “are you allowed to try again?”

Thomas shakes his head “not tonight” he says “only one try per day.”

“What do we do?” asks Jenny “we can't just let Thomas get beat on all the time.”

“We find the leader and get him to do what we want” suggests Chesi.

Sera and Gilyan just exchange wary looks.

“At least with the challenge done” says Gilyan “Thomas is allowed to leave for tonight.”

“Gilly has the right idea” you say to everyone “for now we leave, we can come back later, Thomas needs to rest.”

“I'm fine” protests Thomas weakly, but doesn't protest when Michael and Sera both help him walk out. Gilyan makes sure that she walks without anyone helping her.

No one tries to stop you leaving.

XXX

The next day you are wondering how to beat that stupid challenge, wandering through the corridor to your next class, when you hear chanting and jeering, followed by the sound of Thomas yelling. You hurry towards it, with you is Chesi.

The two of you come around a corner to see a bunch of older boys, some you recognise from last nights club. They are surrounding Thomas and pushing him back and forth in the midst of them in the middle of the corridor.

“Need a girl to fight your battles do you?” one jeers

“Nah she helped him because he's much better at cooking and cleaning than her” says another.

“Yeah” agrees another, shoving Thomas hard, almost knocking him down “going to make a good housewife are you?”

Thomas is trying to fight back but every time he tries to break out or throw a punch they simply shove him off balance.

You start forward, ready to fight. Chesi grabs your arm “you'll get in trouble!” she whispers in your ear “let me handle this.”

Letting Chesi solve the problem

you asked for this
>>
“Alright” you tell Chesi “but if they hit you, I'm going to knock them all into next year”.

Chesi glides forwards confidently “violence is never the answer with people like this” she says.

She pulls a stack of paper from her bag, walks up to the circle of boys and taps one of the shoulder until he turns around.

“What?!” he demands

Chesi says “I hope you're going to pay for any damage done to my property” she says in a very snooty-sounding voice.

“What?” he says again, sounding confused.

Chesi thrusts the papers at him “you're throwing my thrall around” she says “as you can see I own his soul, his body and his mind. Any damage done to any of those means I can have you all dragged before a magistrate and fined. Do you have any idea what repairing a soul costs these days?”

The boy automatically takes the papers, and looks at them confused “what is this?”

Chesi simply brushes confidently past him, grabs Thomas my the arm and pulls him out of the circle. Now the rest of the boys shift their attention to her.

Chesi waves a hand at the sheaf of papers held by the first boy “as you can see in Section 7, subsection 12, part H any damage done to the thrall must be put right in full or else those responsible forfeit their souls.”

“Let me see that” says one of the boys, pulling the was of papers out of the others hands. They all pass the document around until one says “this is some sort of trick isn't it?” he thrusts the papers back at Chesi “very funny, now-” he reaches for Thomas.

“Ah ah ah!” says Chesi, pulling Thomas back and waggling a finger “harm him and I'll have your soul.”

“I didn't sign anything” says the boy “anyway you can't own a person.”

Chesi grins “it's a magic contract” she says “by taking it you agreed to the terms, as for owning a person, I guess you didn't pay any attention in Theology – it's certainly possible. All I need to do is own your soul first.”
>>
“I've heard of magic stuff like that” says one uneasily “like, as soon as you touch it you can't break the rules, like an oath.”

“That stuff is for real sorcerers” argues another boy “not kids.”

“Some sorcerers get powers at a young age” says another.

“Yeah” agrees one boy “and my old nan said all sorcerers get their powers from demons and stuff, maybe she can take our souls.”

“You're being silly!” argues another “there's no way that...”

They're still arguing by the time you have all snuck away.

Once you're a safe distance away, Thomas asks Chesi “Umm, am I really your thrall?”

“Of course not” she says, trying to stuff the fake contract back into her over-full bag “Ugh this won't fit, here hold this” she hands the wad of papers to Thomas, who takes it off her.

Chesi finally sorts her back into order and takes the papers off Thomas and manages to stuff them into her bag.

Them she turns to Thomas and says brightly “but by taking the contract from my hand voluntarily, you just agreed to marry me.”

Thomas just stops walking as you and Chesi continue on. Them he chases after you “you're joking right? Mili, she's joking right?”

All you can do is laugh.

“It's not funny Mili!” says Thomas, sounding a little panicked “what did Chesi do?”
