You are Jareth, Disciple of Elshhu and novice pit fighter. Okay, so you aren't a completely new to the concept of being thrown into a confined space with a murderous monster and told that only one of you is walking out. The main difference is that mom always preferred to view that as “tough love” rather than a spectacle for entertainment. The other difference is that, unlike the Blood Guild, mom never paid you for the trouble.

With only a couple of hours to go before the night matches were set to commence, there wasn't really time enough to go visit anyone without being late for the opening. You'd hate to disappoint Kravana on your first night by being a no-show. With that in mind, you've spent the evening killing time at the arena, sampling the (terrible) food available from the stalls and idly watching a few of the contests.

You've never actually been here after dark before, since you can't say that spectating gory blood sports was ever a thing that appealed, so it's your first time seeing how the place changes once the sun sets. It's a palpable change in atmosphere, the last of the evening revellers stumble off home drunk, cursing their luck or praising their fortune betting on the matches, or just chattering excitedly about the memorable moments. The crowd filtering in are a far less cheerful looking bunch, oh sure, there's plenty of smiles to go around, but you don't think they're smiling over the joy of competition. No, these people came here to see something die, and messily at that.

You can't say you much care for that mood, but oh well. Gold's gold, and it's not like there's anything morally reprehensible about caving in the skulls of a few eldritch and undead horrors. Hell, it's probably the closest you've come to doing stuff that would make mom proud of you in years.

With it looking to be about the right time to go join the other gladiators, you catch a passing guildsman, who rattles off a long, confusing list of directions down into the bowels of the arena for you to follow to reach the waiting room. Whistling a jaunty tune for the sole purpose of annoying the bloodthirsty patrons, you start the long walk to your destination, rather wishing you'd had the chance to write it down on the back of your hand.

Five minutes later and... yeah, you're lost. You don't think you've ever wandered this deep into the arena before. You'd swear they're pulling some dimensional magics to make this place quite so labyrinthine, the arena's huge, but it's not that huge.

>Keep wandering, you'll find it sooner or later.

So, what are you lads thinking about for the next upgrade once the time comes? I'm thinking either the whole wallwalking thing, mana punch or whatever, enhanced senses, or energy projectiles.
We already have two(agility and healing were two separate things, right?) so I'd expect the next one to come before thread 30.
>>
There's bound to be others heading for the waiting room, so unless you've gotten yourself really lost, you should run into them before too long.

Sure enough, it doesn't take much time to track down not just one gladiator, but plenty. Enough that you can afford to be a bit picky in who you chat with. Let's see, grizzled middle-aged scarred man, nah. Another grizzled middle-aged scarred man, and another... you're sensing a pattern here. Younger guy dressed in a lot of black who looks like he probably has the word blood or shadow somewhere in his name, nah, you'll pass on that too.

Oh, looks like there's a few female gladiators too, and even a very few of those who look kind of hot. Well, that narrows down your choices a fair bit.

There's a girl, probably no older than you, who honestly looks a little too pretty and sane to be competing here, not that you're one to talk in that regard. Blonde hair, wearing chain with a surcoat, and looking kind of knightly, which is a surprise, you didn't know the Great City even had knights anymore.

The other two look a bit more what you'd expect from a place like this. First up an older woman, maybe in her thirties, dressed in battleworn old leathers and with her brown hair tied back into a loose ponytail. She's got a certain vicious handsomeness about her, though you're not sure you'd say pretty persay.

The last of the three rather stands out even amongst the motley collection passing you by. Long ears poking out from beneath a head of unkempt shoulder-length black hair, and two truncated stumps on her forehead that you suspect were one horns. A caprian, you think, though they're plenty rare in the Great City, and you've only ever seen one before in a book your teacher Artor had. She's wearing a broad grin, a skip in her step as she makes her way to the waiting room, and more than a touch of crazy in those goat-like eyes. Damned sexy though.

The only upgrade we've gotten is agility. Next logical one would be speed since it's the direct opposite of agility in allowing us to beat the shit out of people easier rather than dodge easier, but the mana blast thing would also be an adequate choice for offense as long as we're willing to burn through our mana really quick.

Okay, so she looks a little unhinged, but you've never had a chance to get to know a Caprian before, and life is all about new experiences. You pick up your pace, walking up alongside her.

“Heading to the waiting room?” you ask, the pit fighter giving you a sidelong glance.

“'Course,” the goatgirl replies, giving a shrug, the two of you walking alongside one another for a couple minutes more before you catch the Caprian peering at you again.

“New guy, yes?”

“How can you tell?” you smile.

“Kin's memorized everyone who lives more than a few nights here, kin's got good memory, ya know. Don't know you none though.”

Girl's got a weird accent, kind of clipped, definitely didn't grow up in any part of the Great City you've ever been to. She turns to face you, by which you mean she starts walking backwards in front of you, scratching her nose as she cocks her head to peer at you.

“Too pretty for pit fighting, 'less you a vampire,” she frowns, reaching out one clawed finger to prod at your top lip, evidently trying to get a better look at your teeth.

You flash her a smile, making sure to give her a good view of your lack of fangs.

“Nope, no vampires here.”

“Shame, kin's never seen a vampire in the pit round here, so if you ain't a vampire, what's your game?”

(cont)
>>
>>45215828
“You want to know, eh?”

“Little, sure.”

You nod, leaning in, holding a hand up conspiratorially, one of the other gladiators stepping aside with a frown as the Caprian girl damn near walks backwards into him. Judging by the fact that all he does is frown, you'd guess he's not confident that upsetting her would be wise.

She however seems completely oblivious to this, as she leans in, her strange eyes widening with glee at the secret about to be revealed.

“I'm here to get laid. Gotta impress Kravana somehow.”

There's a momentary pause, the Caprian girl blinking, letting out one slight snort before she throws her head backwards, stopping her backwards motion to rest a hand on your shoulder as she howls with laughter.

“Ahh. Well, kin's heard worse of reasons.”

“Jareth,” you explain, holding out a hand, which the Caprian girl seizes in her own claw-nailed hand.

“...and you're... Kin?”

That draws another chuckle out of her.

“Nah, Great City folk always get in a mess over that one. Kin is... uh... I,” she frowns, tapping a finger to her chin, stumbling over the translation a little.

“Other folk, they call kin by Yara,” she explains, falling back into step alongside you.

“I'm guessing you've been here a while then, Yara?”

“None false there, sure. Kin's been here... three years now, yeah, and it never stops being fun,” Yara chuckles.

Looks like you're not there yet, so if you have anything to ask your knowledgeable travelling companion on-route, or talk to her about in general, now's the time.

>How goat are goatgirls by the way? Satyrlike, so hooves and fur covered lower half?

Caprians aren't satyrs, which are something else entirely. She's mostly human-looking, just with goat-like ears, horns (which as mentioned, she seems to have had mostly removed) and eyes. She also has clawed hands and feet, and, if Jareth remembers the description he read in Artor's book, a goat tail (which the book helpfully informed was quite sensitive).

“Three years. You live around here then?”

“Kin came here straight off the boat, yeah. Dropped a hefty sack of gold for a place. Kin none patience for landlords, so this suits kin nice. No sense moving too far from the arena anyway, s'why kin came all the way here. Quiet, thick walls, neighbours not so nosy, good for sleeping, good for working magic.”

So she's from outside the Great City then, that explains it. Maybe the southern continent, not any place you remember meeting anyone from before.

“Working magic? I'm guessing from the lack of weapons, that's how you fight then?”

“Kin's none mage, if that's what you asking, maybe you should see kin fight, see for yourself,” Yara grins, peering at you.

“Kin don't see swords on your belt neither.”

“I'm no mage either. Same offer's open to you, if you want to come see how I fight,” you smile.

“Just as well, mages don't last too great here. bad in confined spaces, you know.”

No answer on the seeing you fight part, huh, well, you suppose she's seen enough rookies come and go here that she's probably not expecting much out of you.

“You must've seen some crazy stuff over the years, huh?”

“Sure, kin's seen some funny stuff. Just two weeks by, saw an abomination take hold'a all four limbs and pull a man apart. Messy, very messy. Kin didn't care overmuch, since kin didn't know him none, lot of folk got weepy over it though, since the corpse'd been around here a while, longer'n kin. Kin figured for a people who lost your homeland, you Great City folk'd be more used to dying,” Kin grins, earning a couple of glares from passing gladiators.

(cont)
>>
>>45216862
Huh, she really doesn't seem at all bothered. You suppose it would take a certain kind of person to keep doing this year after year for, as far as you can tell, fun. A lesser man might be unnerved by the goat-eyed stare and evident glee on her face at the gory death of a co-worker. You however, are a Disciple of Elshhu, and sometimes that means that in the name of your goddess, you have to stick your dick in the crazy.

“Sounds... unique. Well, provided I'm not torn into pieces tonight, want to go get a drink after our matches?”

That makes her cock her head, pausing to look you up and down once more.

“Nice enough to see, but kin's no succubi, you and kin'll see how you fare in the arena, yeah? Then we'll talk about drinks.”

“Fair enough,” you shrug. Looks like that's two murderous pit fighting women you're putting on a show for now.

“Here we are,” Kin chirps a few moments later, holding up a hand as you step through the wide doors to a large open area which presumably serves as the waiting room.

There must be well over a hundred people here, Yara glancing around the crowd with a snort.

“Lotta new faces. Going to be a messy night.”

Looks like there's a board up on the far end of the room, most likely listing who's scheduled to fight what, though from all the people milling around it seems like there's still some time before the matches start properly.

“Think I'll go walk around for a bit, meet some of the other people,” you smile, Yara nodding as she sits herself down crosslegged on the floor, pulling out a small pot of what turns out to be ink, as she carefully dabs the tip of a claw into it and begins scribbling delicate script up her bare arm. From the vague crackle of mana in the air, you're guessing you're getting a little look at how her magic works.

“Can't see much reason to it. Most'll be dead fore the night's out, likely,” the Caprian girl chuckles, dabbing her claw back into the ink to start on a second line.

“What can I say, I'm a curious kind of guy. Anyway, don't forget to watch my glorious victory later,” you shrug, Yara glancing up from her work to stare at you.

“Overconfident, yeah?”

“Overconfident would suggest that I don't have the skills to back it up,” you reply, Yara snorting as you walk away into the crowd of gladiators.

Admittedly, you aren't all that interested in most of the people here, there sure aren't enough hours in the day to be talking to the interchangeable parade of grizzled short-haired middle-aged men making up the bulk of the night's contestants. Fortunately, you spot a golden beacon amidst the sea of brown and grey, the knightly looking girl from before, who seems to have picked herself out a spot against a wall, as she meticulously polishes the blade of a bastard sword to a mirror sheen.

(cont)
>>
>>45217811
Needless to say, she rather stands out from the grimy and scarred crowd, and you catch more than a few conversations between other gladiators predicting her horrible death in her match tonight. They aren't being quiet about it either, so either she's too engrossed in her work to notice, or she's simply pretending not to.

Going out on a limb for conversation, you lean against the wall alongside the knightly girl as she peers down the length of the blade.

“First night?”

That draws her attention up from the blade, the girl peering over at you with some surprise.

“Correct sir. Is it that obvious?” she sighs, giving you a nod.

You've never been called sir before, that's for sure. Or indeed heard anyone call anyone sir before, save as a joke. Listening to her carefully measured tones however, you suspect it was meant with all politeness in this case.

“Sure, since we're both in the same boat there,” you grin.

“I suppose it is rather noticeable,” the girl gives a weary smile, glancing around the room.

She seems, not confident per say, though she's not showing the frayed nerves and second thoughts you're seeing from a few of the other obvious first timers here. Wary perhaps, that might be the word you'd use to describe the look in her eye, well, that and tired. Poor girl looks like she could use a few more hours sleep.

“Name's Jareth, by the way,” you smile, as the girl returns her sword to its scabbard.

“Brigitte, sir. It is an honor, and I must admit, a relief to meet someone here who is less standoffish,” Brigitte replies, even giving a slight bow with her introduction.

“So Brigitte, what brings you here? Can't say pretty, well-mannered girls like you what one would usually expect in gladiatorial death matches.”

“I fear it's nothing quite so interesting as you're imagining sir...”

“Jareth's fine.”

“...As you say, Jareth. I, much like most here I suspect, am in search of further challenge. It is fearfully difficult to find a method of honing ones skills in true combat in these parts.”

That makes you blink, if there's one thing you've never had trouble finding in the Great City, it's someone or something willing to make an attempt on your life. You can only wonder at the kind of upbringing Brigitte has had to find the Great City such a safe place to live. Though from her proper manner you're getting the strong impression that she comes from a wealthy, and safe, background.

“If you say so. Though perhaps next time you'll want to get a good night's sleep beforehand, hmm?”

“I... ah, you are right of course. I had a great deal of training today, unfortunately. My schedule did not allow for more than a few hours,” Brigitte replies, stifling a yawn.

You aren't really sure what to make of this girl, she seems confident enough in her abilities, but whether that confidence is fully founded is another matter entirely.

Ask what sort of things she's fought before, to have come here for challenge. She does realize these aren't as soft as the daytime matches, right? No offense to her abilities, but you don't often encounter someone in the city who needs to come here to find a challenge.

“Well, good luck to you, if you think this city's safe, you should be able to handle anything the night matches can throw at you,” you smile.

“Thank you, and to you as well. With any luck we can both meet again at the matches' end,” Brigitte nods.

A guildsman's voice cuts through the general chatter, calling the first few contestants out to the various rings. Looks like they have three matches going on at once in different chambers, though the first three contestants are no-one you know.

“It would appear that the night's festivities are underway. You had best hurry if you wish to change,” Brigitte coughs, brushing some errant dust from her sleeve.

“I was just planning to wear this,” you shrug, glancing down at your usual clothing. If it works for adventuring, it'll work fine here. It's comfortable and easy to move in (and easy to remove), which is all you really need out of an outfit.

“I see,” Brigitte frowns, with just a hint of disapproval on her face.

“Unless you think I should lose the shirt, give the crowd something to enjoy,” you ponder, rubbing a hand to your chin.

“Ah, no, I wasn't implying-” Brigitte starts, cheeks heating with a flush as she very studiously studies the air just over your shoulder.

You smile, leaving her to fluster for a moment, though she regains her composure with impressive speed, taking a deep breath and shaking her head.

“While it may not be my place to say so in regards to myself. I am not entirely sure that such talk is appropriate in the company of a lady.”

“I think there's a lot worse impropriety on offer around here,” you shrug, glancing around. Looks like some of the contestants really are just changing clothes right here in the waiting room. Sure are a lot of dicks out, which Brigitte has apparently just noticed, and is now trying very hard not to notice, the young knight suddenly deeply interested in the state of the chamber's ceiling.

“I suppose it's too much to ask that they provide us with individual changing rooms,” she sighs, eyes fixed upwards.

“Too expensive, I'd imagine.”

“I am thankful that I thought to change before arriving here. I fear that some things, moreso than battle, are rather beyond me.”

You smirk, you're pretty sure that this counts as her loosening up a little around you, by her standards, to be talking like this. She must have realized that too, as a slight touch of pink creeps into her cheeks a moment later, her eyes flicking down to meet yours.

“I apologize if I am coming across as a little too... casual. I am really not used to this sort of atmosphere.”

“I think if there's one thing you don't have to worry about, it's being too casual,” you smirk.

You hear the guildsman calling out another two names. Seems like two of the first three matches ended very quickly, which doesn't bode well for either of the contestants, since they have yet to return.

A few minutes later, a third name is called, Brigitte's, the young knight gathering up her sword and taking a deep breath.

“Well then, here I go.”

“You'll do great,” you smile, patting her on the shoulder, Brigitte giving you a nod before turning and making her way through the crowd to the far doors.

You make your way through the crowd to the notice board, glancing down the long list of names until you spot your own. Looks like you've got a bit of a wait before you're called in, enough time to check out Brigitte's match at least.

As for what you're fighting, you have no idea what that is, sure are a lot of consonants in its name though. Tslughra. Sounds like something from Qlippoth, most likely, which means it's going to be weird-looking, and you're probably going to want to take a bath after you're done.”

Oh well, with that out of the way, you stop by one of the guildsmen, getting directions to Brigitte's match, the sullen-faced orc leading you through an employee entrance to the back of the arena seats. The match is already underway when you arrive, Brigitte squaring off against some sort of undead by the looks of it, though it could just as easily be a particularly skeletal demon you suppose.

Whatever it is, it's big and fast. Even with its curled spine and hunched posture it still looms several feet over the young knight's head, long bony claws scraping the stone as it circles her, slow measured paces, the dull blue light in its eyes fixed Brigitte.

Brigitte has more than a few scratches about her already, the creature's claws having ripped several neat holes straight through the surcoat and chain, though none deep enough to be more than flesh wounds. For her part, Brigitte looks remarkably calm as the creature stalks around her, trailing ragged cloth and glittering motes of frost from its bleached bones.

The crowd don't seem to be enjoying the slow pace of the match thus far, judging by the howls for blood, for action, for something to happen. Brigitte doesn't respond to the cries however, simply holding her gleaming bastard sword tight in both hands, body barely moving as her eyes follow the creature's movements.

>>45220948
With nary a moment's warning, the creature jerks off from its slow circle, bones popping as it snaps its body at a sharp right angle, launching itself at the young knight with a shriek, the dull light in its eyes blazing into blue fire. Brigitte spins on her heel to meet the assault, ducking under one claw, parrying another, and a third, hissing with pain as the fourth just barely draws a line across her forehead before she can step back out of reach. She's fast, impressively so, not as fast as you of course, but you certainly don't think you could take the young knight lightly, in spite of first appearances.

She pivots as she steps back, bringing the blade around low and hard to the base of the creature's back, beneath the ribs. It shrieks, staggering to the side as the force of the blow sends a spiderweb of cracks through the bone, dislodging the patina of frost across the creature's form in a great cloud. Teeth clenched, Brigitte steps back, arm trembling as the frost settles across it, the skin smouldering from the unnatural cold as the links of the chain fall away, buckling and splintering as the heat is sapped from them.

The thing lets out a wail, its claws tapping the stone as it steps forward, Brigitte letting out a fogged breath as the frozen air turns to swirling snow, a blizzard slowly whipping up within the protective barriers of the arena. Even if Brigitte can handle the creature in a fight, she'll freeze to death long before she can wear it down if she keeps playing so defensively, a fact which you're guessing she's figured out, from the deepening frown on her face.

She rubs the back of her hand across her brow, wiping blood from her eye, keeping her gaze fixed on the creature as she keeps her sword firmly gripped in one hand. It seems in no rush, perhaps content to wait for the young knight to expire from the cold, or make a brash move and leave herself open.

>>45220969
The bastard sword still gripped in her right hand, Brigitte holds her left out to the side, shifting her stance as she keeps the blade out in front of her. The thing gives a creaking groan, scratching furrows in the frozen stone as it watches, eyes flickering in anticipation.

Brigitte kicks off from the snowy ground in a burst of white powder, the thing lunging to meet her as she brings the sword down in an arc, clashing with the forearm of the thing. Again the blade sends cracks through the bleached bones, but again it fails to do any more damage than that, Brigitte's enemy too hardy for her sword to shatter. She's going to have to strike a more fatal blow, you'd guess, but the thing's doing a good job of keeping her at arms reach, as the two exchange a few more vicious strikes which see another vicious gouge opened up along Brigitte's leg.

She stumbles, favoring the wounded leg, the thing seeing its opportunity, launching itself forward with claws outstretched, too fast for the young knight to correct her footing. You grip the edge of the railing, your breath caught in your throat.

...and then it's all over.

Brigitte stands behind the creature, her sword held in her left hand, and with one motion, she wrenches the blade free from between its ribs, bringing with it what can only be the thing's heart, shrivelled and grey, staked with wooden spikes carved with eldritch runes.

The light in the thing's eyes flare for a moment, the blue flame blazing bright before it gutters and fades, the bones clattering to the ground in a heap as Brigitte flicks the blade, the dessicated organ shattering upon the ground.

You have no idea how she did that, but it was damned impressive. Perhaps you didn't have to worry for the young knight after all. You can only hope your own fight goes so smoothly.

Did you roll dice for these two as well, like with the monster fight?
>>
>>45221010
Thank you for the thread.
>>
>>45221049
I did.

Though Brigitte's pretty tough, so she would've had to roll awfully badly to get seriously injured, and dying would be damn near impossible going into the fight on mostly full mana as she did.
>>
It will be cool for her to join our adventuring party and we need another heavy hitter don't we?
>>
>>45221010
When wil we be adventuring outside the walls and how dangerous will it be? Are there any religions who despise Elshhu?
>>
>>45221142
Outside the walls?
The Great City's built across several islands, so it doesn't really have walls. If you mean when will you be adventuring beyond the Great City. Probably never, though you might do some stuff on the surrounding islands at some point, depending on how things go.

As for how dangerous it is, no more or less dangerous than the Great City, really.

>Are there any religions who despise Elshhu?
Plenty, ranging from mild distaste to murderous loathing. There's far too many gods in the DoE setting, and they tend to step on each others toes a lot.

>Plenty, ranging from mild distaste to murderous loathing. There's far too many gods in the DoE setting, and they tend to step on each others toes a lot.
How many are because Elshhu boinked one of their lovers?
>>
>>45220987
That's some funky shit.
I'm guessing either some chronomancy, alternate reality, super self enhancement, supernaturally guided movement, or maybe teleportation.
Thanks for the thread lad, looking forward to our fight against the Tslughra next time. Will Yara(?) be fighting after us?
>>
>>45221298
Yeah, Yara's match is a little later on in the night.

>>45221284
That is certainly one of the leading causes, even if Elshhu does try to ensure that there's no hard feelings. Sadly some deities are less open-minded than she is.
>>
>>45221180
Once the Sascha section is over, will we go back to Ur and play out what he did during Sascha's adventure, or are you going to timeskip it and just ask us what we want to have worked on plot-wise and stat-wise(if there's enough time)?
So
>And now, back to the past, just after Sascha left...
or
>And now we return to our protagonist, Ur'shal, who in the last couple weeks has been doing X and Y, and...
?

>And now we return to our protagonist, Ur'shal, who in the last couple weeks has been doing X and Y, and...
This one, most likely.

Okay, if that's all the questions, I'm going to be off.
