Welcome to Academy City. The time is now morning, the weather is metallic, and the date is February 9.

You are Kyril Torikov, and your sides hurt. Apparently you were much more injured than you thought. One lost kidney, several inches of your intestines, two ribs, and the nearly half of your abdomen had gone missing. That was what the doc had said when he was finished stabilising you. If you remembered correctly, Etzali did have some kind of disintegration ray, or something. It had been so far at the back of your mind that you had left yourself open. It worked. Whether it was worth it was another matter. Given the mess of machinery surrounding your and their near silent whirring, you couldn’t be sure. For the foreseeable future you were going to be hooked up until a more permanent solution could be implemented.

Bedridden as you were, news and well wishes had filtered in. Mostly it was from Nayuta. Apparently the recording of Etzali’s final moments had been captured, edited, and spread loose on the wider web. You didn’t have to guess who was responsible for that. Those who had the technology savvy to catch a glimpse of it had been in awe, or at least that was what Nayuta had assured you. School District 10 had remained quiet, surprisingly enough. Again, Nayuta had commended you on your effort on having stabilised the district. Given that it was your money that was circulating the district it better damn well be stable. There was still the issue of how to deal with your now newfound fame though.

While your sunglasses stumped electronic facial recognition, it did little good against the Mk1 eyeball. You assumed that your boss, or your secretary, would eventually show up, to settle matters. Thus, as visiting hours started the first person to walk in through the doors surprised you. It was,

You did not expect Dinah and her bodyguard to visit that was for sure. It was rather early in the morning too, and you were sure that they would have had classes to attend. The air about them was tense. Maybe it was the sight of you. With the mass of bandages and machinery around you, it must have looked like you were on your last legs to them. Dinah took a seat at your bedside, whilst Taylor leaned back against the wall. The former was looking worried. The latter had a grim expression despite her attempts to appear indifferent.

“Friend Kyril, are the rumours true?”

An open question straight out of the gate huh? Even drugged up as you were, you could tell. She could have been asking about anything so you considered your answer as best as you could.

“Which ones?”

Your throat wasn’t parched but you affected the most ill voice you could. To cement the illusion, you took a sip of the straw that fed you liquids and who knew whatever else. Dinah fidgeted as she considered your question.

“There are many, friend Kyril. One where you have,” she paused, “’business,’ in School District 10. There is also another, that you were VERDICT. That you, as either, were responsible for so much death and suffering.”

“I’m not sure what you want me to say.”

After all, who would admit to either when both were damning.

“That you had not wished for it to be so. That you had been ordered to and in fear you had obeyed. It is alright to admit to weakness friend Kyril. We are all human.”

That just sounded like something she wanted to hear for her own peace of mind than anything.

“So are they true?” she repeated the question, voice trembling.

>”No.” (this is a lie)
>”Yes.”

“Yes,” you finally answered, “Yes, to everything.”

Dinah’s silence urged you to continue.

“I never asked for this but I am a necessary evil that may not be necessary anymore. In my own way, I was protecting the City,” you nodded at yourself, “It’s a thankless and demanding job but it’s not like quitting is an option.”

The silence dragged on. Dinah raised one of her hands to touch your face. Her touch was soft, yet numbing, as she cupped your cheek.

“I understand completely friend Kyril,” she said tenderly, “Things will be better. I will make sure of that.”

She retracted her hands.

“Sweet dreams my friend.”

She got up and walked out. Taylor lingered, her figure glowing an intense yellow. It spread about the room, layering itself along the walls, floor, and ceiling. If Dinah’s words were foreboding, this only seemed to set off all the alarm bells. You moved to call a nurse.

Then you found out that you couldn’t.

Rather, a more uncomfortable fact was soon apparent as soon as your visitors had left. It was getting harder to breathe. Your lungs were paralysed and whilst your body felt numb, the lack of oxygen was starting to burn. Forget about even moving, you couldn’t even get your thoughts straight.

You didn’t panic straightaway though. Dying was not unknown to you and you marshalled whatever lucidity you had at the problem you were facing. With Taylor’s Code M interference you doubted that the emergency panic button would do you any good. Though your thoughts were starting to fade, if you could use that last bit of concentration to launch yourself out of the room then you perhaps you stood a better chance. It would obviously aggravate your grievous wounds of course but there was no time left. You had to,

You had to leave. The room was a death trap, prepared by a Code M, and undoubtedly Grímsdóttir. You had to hand it to the vigilante. Letting your friend say her goodbyes to you was twisted and unimaginably cruel. As the thought lingered, you forced a blow on around the sternum, forcing your lungs to empty. The extra breath of fresh air wasn’t enough but it kept you up longer as you gathered your mind. Without any hesitation you flung your limp body off the bed and towards the door. You could feel the agony as something important was ripped out of you. The floor was cold, yet it warmed up ever so slightly as you lay in nothing but pain. You couldn’t even gasp but the sensation certainly kept your brain awake in the ever growing oxygen deprivation problem. With one more effort, you crashed through the door with a crash, a snap, and the odd scream.

The time is unknown, the weather is unknown, and the date is probably unchanged.

You awoke to Nayuta’s face bearing down on you. Her eyes were closed, like she had fallen asleep in the middle of her vigil. It was a troubled sleep though, given how puckered her lips were. You don’t know what woke her up though but she pulled back sharply with a start.

“Ah nii-chan, glad to see you’re awake.”

“What time is it?” you asked, “And why can’t I feel my legs?”

At that her expression changed from worried to an angry, but cute, glare. Ah, you recognised that expression. She was going to lecture you.

“Well, no thanks to someone basically ripping out their insides that Heaven Canceller-sensei was so nice to try and keep inside, we’ve basically had to scrap all our plans,” Nayuta huffed, “We had to put you back in surgery. Again.”

“I was poisoned,” you argued.

Your voice was weak but your tone was not.

“What did you do to me?”

The damage had been extensive, or so Nayuta had told you. Your old body was old and busted at this point. It wasn’t cold and unfeeling, but underneath that hastily stitched and repaired skin was more technology than a smart phone. All of it was to keep you alive. Your lungs were now a mesh of organic and inorganic tissue, replaceable organs had been replaced, with temporary backups as necessary. Now, you were almost more machine than man. It scared you.

“Ah don’t worry nii-chan, I made sure that you could have,” Nayuta blushed, “Have children.”

That was a small mercy and a half you thought. Nayuta muttered something personal.

“What was that?” you wanted her to speak up.

“Oh nothing nii-chan,” she suspiciously denied, “By the way, you only can’t feel your legs because I didn’t connect them yet.”

Connected them? You got up. Or at least, you tried to.

“Stay down, nii-chan,” Nayuta instructed.

Growling, you relaxed back on to the table. If it weren’t for Nayuta’s capability of turning your Ability against you then you would have resisted even more.

“And for your information, I need you to be awake for this so the nerves will reattach properly,” she continued, “This will hurt.”

There was a tiny spike of pain.

“Hah,” you breathed, “Didn’t hurt at afFFFUUUUUUUuuuu-”

“Right,” Nayuta smiled, “Now, calibration should take a while but you’ll be walking about in no time at all nii-chan.”

You gasped for breath before glaring at her.

“When will that be?”

Some part of you had processed the fact that you had nearly been killed, rather poisoned on a hospital bed, and there was one consequence. You were going to get even.

“It is currently,” her eyes glow, “1527 local time. You should be walking like normal in around three hours.”

That was plenty of time to plan your revenge and the first step was to,

“Nayuta.”

“Hmmm nii-chan?”

“Thanks,” you said, “Again.”

There was a mixture of equal parts resignation and exasperation on her face as you left. Maybe after you paid back Grímsdóttir, you could do something nice for your boss next. Another item to add to the ever growing pile you supposed.

The time is now evening, the weather is heated, and the date is still February 9.

Around you sat Sagara and Kyousuke. The drinks were bitter but they did more than enough to make the topic of your discussion palatable. It was a pretty high class bar for university students you thought. The three of you were waiting for one final member of your little conspiracy. Though when they did show up they did not show up quietly. The doors were slammed open. The patrons remained silent as they watched the new arrival.

“So, dear, I hear you intend to pay back the Grimsdotter harlot for attempting to poison you on your hospital bed.”

Asuka’s voice was loud and clear. The hushed conversations around the bar suddenly picked up in intensity. Well you had half a mind to call out the vigilante but you were fine if your girlfriend decided to take the decision away from you.

“Something like that,” you got up, “Let’s go.”

Your fingers closed around your collar. The metallic helmet unfolded from underneath your skin, cladding you in a new, more sinister looking helmet. There was a snap and a hiss the whole thing pressurised.

“So where to first?” Sagara asked.

Of course you already had leads. There was Taylor, and failing that, you could have Dinah as well. The latter was only tenuously connected to the crime however and it wouldn’t be fair to her. Then again VERDICT wasn’t exactly known for restraint so if there was some collateral then it was all Grímsdóttir’s fault and not yours.

>>
>>45564696
I am in favor of capture AND making her unusable usch as taking her arms legs and minor organs
>>
There was anger, and it told you that there was no innocence, only degrees of guilt. The rational side of you pointed out that her involvement was minimal at best. Unless you could find more evidence to contrary it was better off leaving the former American Ambassador’s daughter alive and unspoiled. Meanwhile Sagara and Kyousuke were preparing for the eventual confrontation with Grímsdóttir. You would have done everything yourself but Nayuta had warned you against using too much of your Ability. Right now your body was barely holding it together as it was. If you did not subconsciously devote enough attention to your Ability you were liable to fall apart, literally.

It wasn’t hard to find Dinah’s address, and it wasn’t surprising that the girl herself would be answering the door. Asuka had ‘volunteered’ to drag ‘that strumpet’ out of hiding and had ‘requested’ that you wait warmly in the wings. That didn’t mean that you didn’t have a live feed of it all though.

“Good evening child, you will bring to the one known as Taylor.”

Dinah tilted her head in confusion.

“Excuse me?”

Asuka clicked her tongue, sub-vocalising, “So you’re one of those types huh?” before her whole demeanour changed completely.

“Your friend Taylor has been requested at a meeting with VERDICT.”

It was now that Dinah’s expression hardened in to suspicion.

“Hurting her won’t bring him back,” she said, assured of your death.

Asuka simply laughed in her face.

“I’ll take it from here,” Taylor’s appearance was swift, “She has no business with you.”

“No, I do not,” Asuka agreed, “You will come with me.”

“Of course.”

Whether it was because of Asuka’s Ability or of her own volition you couldn’t tell. Still you had plans for her. If you tort- interrogated her long enough, she would reveal Grímsdóttir’s location. Hell, the vigilante herself might show up in the nick of time to aid her companion. That was how it worked in fiction right?

“Rumours of his death have been greatly exaggerated,” Asuka began.

The two young ladies walked down the street with such deception you would swear they were friends. You shadowed her from the car, the boys from the air.

“I’m glad that I’ve limited Dinah’s internet privileges,” Taylor answered easily.

“I am curious as to your method, if you would indulge me.”

Taylor pulled out a few leaves.

“Curare-based contact poison,” she explained, “It paralyses the diaphragm yet an antidote is easily administered. I bet Dinah never knew what she was doing.”

“A foolish wager,” Asuka flicked her hair, “In fact, if I were a suspicious person, I would wager that she herself knowingly administered the poison.”

“It was not her decision,” Taylor argued.

“That both of you walked out is proof of cowardice. You both refused to see it through to the end. So not only do you lack in character, you lack in professionalism. I do not know whether it is better to be relieved or disappointed. But enough talk.”

“Yes.”

Taylor agreed. A yellow rod, no staff, snapped into place in her free hand. Asuka hadn’t even bothered to draw her sword.

“Choke on the poison that you peddle witch.”

Her words took effect. Taylor dropped her staff, the thing transforming in to a snake, as her hands were forcing themselves in to her pockets and then down her throat. The African Rock Python lunged at Asuka, intent on constricting her. It was too slow a method of killing. The Dean was coated in snake blood as the snake’s master writhed with it in their own respective death throes. That seemed to be Grímsdóttir’s cue as she landed deftly behind your girlfriend.

“Release her.”

“You would threaten a swordswoman at this distance with a firearm?” Asuka asked unsurprised, “Are you brain damaged, and is it congenital?”

While Asuka was obviously capable of taking a bullet there was no need for her to do so again.

Kyousuke never did tell you how he managed to acquire an Arctic Warfare Magnum on his trip to France. Regardless, he had broken out the Big Five ammunition. From atop his perch of Sagara’s helicopter, CADRE simulated the path his bullet had to take, fully curving 90 degrees on two axes before striking his target almost two and a half seconds later with plenty of kinetic energy to spare. The piece of rebar skittered across the pavement as Grímsdóttir was forced to let go.

“Cease and desist,” Asuka commanded.

A beat passed.

“Or not,” evidently her Ability was useless here, “I prefer it that way honestly.”

“Leave Taylor alone and I will play your sick game sadist.”

Asuka smiled.

“Make me.”

For a girl with what looked like a broken arm, Grímsdóttir didn’t hesitate. Her lead fist battered aside the blade of The Dean with uncanny precision. To be fair to your girlfriend, the counter blow was not unexpected. Asuka rolled with punch as it landed next to her diaphragm.

“Breathe,” you could hear your girlfriend hiss.

She barely recovered when Grímsdóttir’s third blow came towards her temple. The hook had snapped her head the other way and she lay sprawled on the concrete. Asuka was down but not out. The vigilante ignored her in favour of her companion. It was too late for her you surmised as your Camaro pulled up along the kerb. Her frantic CPR was interrupted with a size 44 boot to the head.

“VERDICT,” she exclaimed, “Why did you come back?”

She was incredulous. More than the shock, CASIE registered equal parts shame and sadness. It fed your next words,

“Was it supposed to be a mercy killing?”

She flinched.

“Well congratulations bitch, you just killed all the mercy I had.”

“You know I thought you opposed killing,” you remarked with a sardonic smirk, “I'm sure you're glad to know you didn't quite cross that line with me, though not for lack of trying.”

Your gun had already been in your hand but the moment you raised the gun to open fire she moved. Your arm almost snapped at how fast you tracked your target, the first shot cutting her off just before she could cross the street. CADRE factored in how fast she could react and move and this time you squeezed the trigger thrice. It was when you saw her move that both you and CADRE agreed that she wasn’t simply wasn’t just moving and reacting with inhuman speed, she was anticipating as well. You had three shots left, but if she was anticipating a combat load then this could be your one chance to surprise her.

The next three shots led her to the middle of the street. You had fiddled with the slide’s catch to preserve the illusion of one final shot. She was airborne before she even noticed that you had brought up your left arm. The grenade caught her as she landed, the explosion engulfing her. Her body slammed in to the wall across the street, mangled and glistening. It was the first time you had used the grenade launcher in your arm and she had not seen it coming.

Then she got back up.

Her body was not human. So she was a cyborg too huh? Somehow you weren’t surprised.

“You’re all out of aces,” Grímsdóttir said.

Despite the better half of her face being seared of flesh, you could tell that she was only mildly annoyed. She was more worried about her ally, Taylor. The latter was already on her hands and knees, coughing up the contents of her stomach. Asuka stood above her, The Dean poised and ready to strike.

“No I don’t,” you answered.

“Then take your pound of flesh,” she finally submitted.

You ordered,

“Surrender now,” you sneered, “The City will see ‘justice’ done.”

For emphasis, Sagara’s helicopter cleared the block. A spotlight trained down on her. Attached to the spotlight was a minigun. You didn’t know where and you didn’t care how Sagara had gotten on but it was a genuine article. There was no need to say that even she would be torn in half by the sheer rate of fire alone.

“You will not harm Taylor.”

“You heard her Asuka, please take care of her.”

“My pleasure dear.”

Grímsdóttir didn’t even flinch as Asuka brought the flat of her blade down on Taylor. The Code M was sent back in to the realm of unconsciousness.

“I surrender.”

“You’re under arrest,” you confirmed.

The time is now morning, the weather is now clear, and the date is February 10.

Figuring that the weekend was upon her, Asuka had spent the night with you. Nothing of note had happened since the vigilante had been apprehended the night before. So you were surprised to see both her and Nayuta arguing about how to serve scones in the early hours of the morning.

“Ahem.”

“Nii-chan, I told you to take it easy,” Nayuta chastised you as expected.

“Dear, I shall be going out to acquire some strawberry jam. This,” Asuka gestured at your boss, “heathen has suggested we make do with apricot jam for the scones.”

“It’s my kitchen onee-chan,” Nayuta remarked, “And I like apricot jam.”

Asuka raised her eyebrow.

“Technically this used to be her apartment but well,” you gestured.

On your desk and walls were re-appropriated firearms. There was a crate of ammunition with stray cartridges strewn about the room. It all smelled faintly of lubricant too if you were honest.

“Yes dear, because you obviously are in Boy’s Love,” she gestured at the bookshelf above your desk.

“Those are hers,” you conceded, “Let’s just,

“With apricot jam on scones?” Asuka was indignant.

She sighed.

“I suppose plain butter will do.”

Nayuta didn’t have to look to smug as breakfast was served.

“Well I have some good news and some bad news,” Nayuta started, “Grímsdóttir ‘died’ last night.”

Huh?

“She’s a cyborg, it only makes sense that she would have a digital backup somewhere else and terminate the local copy. It’s ingenious how the memory banks closely mimic a human brain. Whoever made her must have cracked artificial intelligence, or close enough it doesn’t matter.”

“So before you continue gushing about our artificial assassin, what is the good news?” Asuka interrupted.

“Oh, well Taylor will be kept sedated and comatose in a secure location until such a time that we can dissect her,” Nayuta mentioned offhandedly, “The better news is now that we have an empty chassis to use to develop Project VERDICT further, a version 2.0! The possibilities…. We can finally try reproducing nii-chan’s ocular mutation, and there’s so much more space to be filled with all manner of weapons.”

You don’t think you’ve ever seen Nayuta in her mad scientist mode in a long while. She was starting to scribble on the napkins.

“I take it that Kyril will have some backups.”

Nayuta looked up in a daze.

“Huh backup? Hmm, I suppose if nii-chan were to suffer brain death, we’d have to try and replicate his brain exactly as it was and stick it in there. Since I was planning to poach from the Rensa-series candidates from the start adapting it to nii-chan wouldn’t be that hard.”

“I don’t think I’d be comfortable in a female body,” you cut in.

“Oh it’s not what’s on the outside that matters. It’s on the inside that counts.”

Nayuta’s statement had a note of conclusiveness about it that you did not care for.

“And I would break up with you if you were,” Asuka added, “No offence dear, if you keep dying on me I may begin to think you do not value our relationship as highly as you once did.”

“So nii-chan, what do you think we should do with the body?”

Oh so she still wanted your opinion huh?
>Keep the chassis as a backup(!) body, just in case

use her as a Grímsdóttir doppelganger

ruin her rep or make it look like the vigilante is working for Kyril

“Well I can’t say no to the idea of VERDICT 2.0,” you admitted, “Sounds like a great excuse to go in to retirement.”

“Nii-chan, you’re too young to buy a farm just yet,” Nayuta pouted but then brightened instantly, “But I can’t wait to begin.”

“I can imagine that you would have need of a caretaker of some sort.”

“Great idea onee-chan! Killer maid cyborg, no one will see it coming,” Nayuta exclaimed without a trace of sarcasm.

You glanced at both of them.

“It behoves me to provide funding if I am to have a stake in this endeavour.”

“Oh, no problem onee-chan, I’m sure the old fuddy-duddies won’t complain.”

Partway through your discussion you tuned it out. Your mind wandered to what you could accomplish with Grímsdóttir’s body rather than how it has been reduced to a mere maid. Of course, you were going to have to voice your input in private much later. For now, you were content to bask in the peace of an animated breakfast table.
Episode End.

Two words. A sentence goes here. Is this a question? When writefag and /tg/ meet, the story begins.
Short run, /tg/ lost, next week will have interludes. Good night.
