You're more than willing to present the Sunish faithful's offerings to Tengr, but if it's going to be done, you're determined to do it right; the offerings must be made at Tengr's shrine.

It's a long journey and taking them from the village without warning would almost certainly squander all the goodwill you've built until now, so instead, you go to Barmak and ask the new chief to join you all in the small pilgrimage. He immediately refuses however and even makes it clear that the Sunish clansmen are not allowed to leave. They can hold their ritual if they please, but he tells you that they are needed at home, for the sake of his clan. This pronouncement naturally causes grumbling among those who were excited to leave with you, but it also makes many re-consider. A couple mention to you that Barmak can be heavy-handed at times, leading as much with brute force and intimidation, as with direction and intelligence.

In private, a band of half a dozen young Sunish tell you that they are ready to leave in secret, excited at the prospect of disobeying the older and authoritarian chief, but doing so could damage relations with the rest of the clan.
>>
>>46163497
It's frustrating to have to give up on the idea of instructing the Sunish on the worship of Tengr and the other gods of the Wild, as you're well aware of the societal bond that could easily form between your people, but you know the risk is too great and angering Barmak would only harm you in the long-term. You gently let down the disappointed young men and women, who grumble, but return to their homes. With winter soon coming however, you don't have any time to try a different approach and you're forced to leave, bidding farewell to your new friends in the Sunish clan.

The journey home is uneventful, at least. With your rapport with the wild gods, you need fear neither animal, nor disaster. Those which do not fear you, at least respect the power of their patrons.

It is now early winter. What will you do?

Beren greets you warmly when you return. She and the tribe both missed you, although for fairly divergent reasons. The tribe has started to collectively realise the role the gods are playing in their lives now. It's a quiet and subtle change, but as unstoppable as the turn of the seasons. The gods of the wild are everywhere in the valley and probably even beyond. They are the sky above and the land that nurtures your crops; the animals you hunt and hide from; the river you draw your water from. As the shaman, you are the point between the gods and humans, the one that keeps the balance. No-one speaks it aloud, but Beren's sharp eyes and ears have picked up on it. People are starting to wonder what will happen when you have gone... It's clear a new shaman will be needed, but who will it be?

As winter starts to close in, you have some free time however. You have done much for the tribe, but there is still more you can do, more that can start to raise them further - to make everyone's lives easier. You decide to devote your attention to...

Probably. This is a quest thread.

The way the nomads use donkeys to move their goods has got you thinking... You don't need to move things over anything like the same distances they do, but baskets of grain and especially the materials for the temple are heavy as the day is long. You need a better way, but even donkeys are going to buckle under that weight. Instead, rather than relying on beasts, perhaps there is some device? Like a sling allowed you to throw stones further and a net lets you catch fish easier?

While your grandchildren will likely look back and see your creation as self-evident, you are hampered purely by your own experience. Your people have used travois to move their possessions for hundreds of years, but they can only carry so much and often got stuck if over-loaded, proving far from perfect. They can't carry the weights you need, but you do rig up something quite useful from them that allows you to sling a loaded basket onto your back, with cords over your shoulders and held by your stomach, or looped around your forehead. It's not much, but it should help everyone carry slightly heavier loads a little easier. There's still plenty to be discovered however, as you don't have a solution for carrying anything the size of a tree trunk without many hands together.

It is now late winter. What will you do?

You have a breakthrough as the snow falls and winter grinds on. Well, it's not so much that YOU have a breakthrough, as much as Mesut does. He comes to you wreathed in smiles and proudly tells you that he's come up with a solution for moving wood to the temple site, from the river. You follow him out into the cold and he takes you to where some of the timber is being stored, waiting for willing hands to move it. His sons and family are there, setting up the demonstration.
"I was watching my youngest play, when it came to me," he explains, "It's so simple, I don't know how no-one's thought of it before! They were rolling down a slope, racing and I thought, why not do the same with tree trunks?"
His sons balance one of the heavier logs over three smaller, but straight felled sapling and push, the support rolling easily under them. When the heavier trunk is about to fall, it's a simple matter to snatch the light pole from the rear and place it in the front.
"The only problem..." Mesut begins, but you're already picking up his thoughts and running with them as if they were your own.
"Is that it's not much good on rough or muddy ground?"
"Exactly," he nods. "But if we've got a lot to move, we could split the wood and lay it in the mud to make a surface perhaps."

>You have had a breakthrough and discovered rollers! They aren't wheels yet, but can help move solid and heavy things like boulders and trees
>>
>>46176101
The winter snows melt and you can finally stop shivering. You're spending more and more time near the fire these days, but not nearly as much as Elia. To your shock, you realise he's been accepted as an elder now! You'll never be able to think of him like that though. To you, Elia Weak-spear will always just be your brother.

>>
>>46176455
Here's the problem with stone-age societies; your people are burst workers. Unless they're organised, they'll just work really hard in short bursts, like at planting and harvest time.

Specialisation of society takes a LOT, I'm sorry to say... Think about it; for every guy you have NOT farming, that's someone everyone else has to support, for NOTHING. That COULD work with a priesthood maybe, or a warrior caste, as they provide something to the community, but builders? They really need sponsorship from someone higher up the food chain.

At least, that's my opinion. Anyway, I'll wait for another vote or two.

With spring comes rain and with rain comes mud. Mesut was definitely right about his rollers being worthless in this crap. The mud and muck sucks at people's feet and makes even walking a nightmare. A new innovation has started showing up however; shoes! Your people have bound their feet before, of course, but generally, those were not for everyday wear. Now, proper shoes and sandals are starting to develop that are worn every day, as opposed to simply when it's cold, or over rough ground.

That is less of a concern for you however. Rather, you're starting to consider the idea of making organised paths, kept clear of mud and muck. Your people have already trodden grass-less pathways where they commonly walk, but it'll be up to you to organise anything more set... And first, you'll need to plan it all out, which will mean more research.

I'm planning a change to research. Rather than building up to a point, every time you research, you'll take away from a total number. I'll then roll and if a d100 surpasses the new total, you successfully discover the secrets you're looking for. On 95+ on my roll, you make a breakthrough and get a little bonus, regardless of if the full technology is researched.

What do you think?

Sound good.
I do say before the traders leave, we go to try and buy the fine tools. They could help lower the dc for crafting and building new things. Possibly even help raise our ideas when thinking of new inventions/tech like helping us make the wheel.
>>
>>46178503
I do, yeah.

>>46178598
No, think of it like this.
>Tech has 300 obscruity
>Your rolls reduce its obscurity every time it's researched
>I roll a d100 every turn you/someone researches it
>If I roll over its current obscurity, the tech is discovered
>If I roll a 95+ you make a breakthrough, regardless of if the tech is discovered
>Techs can also be discovered if enough breakthroughs are made

Makes sense now? Anyway, votes called, rolls tallied.

Who will keep the trackways clear? They won't stay that way themselves. What could you make them from? Wood will rot and be too expensive. Should they go straight, or wind around obstacles? You never even considered these problems before, much less had to suddenly solve them! And on top of that, your mind is plagued by the re-newed concerns of bringing the clans together and the building of the temple and the feeling that somehow, the rollers can be improved... You make sadly little progress for now.

It has now become early summer. Bees are humming among the flowers, the grain is planted and a new innovation has come from your tribe. A young man, experimenting with his fishing spear, has made the deceptively-unusual discovery that three tines work better than a single barbed point. Already, two designs have emerged; one with the tines splayed out like the fingers of a hand, the other with them grasping like a hawk's claws.

>>
You've been neglecting the temple lately and now the spring rains have dried up, you have a chance to put some of Mesut's new innovation to work. You still have no roadways, but they still should speed things up a little bit. So, mindful of the gods expectations, you incite the tribe to put their backs into things. You're starting to really appreciate the sheer labour that's involved in something like this. Still, work continues as best it can with your infrequent workforce. The rollers definitely speed things along however, cutting the number of people needed to move the heavy materials in half.

>New technology has improved the amount of labour points available!
>The Grand Temple of the Wild still requires 319 labour points to complete

Beren and Noh dutifully comply with your request. They don't have much to go with, but your son hits upon an interesting idea. If they carefully shape bone and wood into the parts for tools, you might be able to imbue them with magic, making them valuable goods to trade further afield. Even if the enchantment doesn't take, the carvings should make them worth at least a little more.

The bow is quite the jump from the sling, I feel like we would need to be a more capable hunter to even begin having the idea. As it stands I will be happy if we get the Wheel and the Temple done before our death with some effort towards uniting the tribes already started.

Next year we should go see the Sunish and check in with them. Hopefully the new leader has consolidated more control and would be more willing to have people explore the worship they want. I am disappointed we backed down from the ritual, sets a bad precedent.
