You are now Dyrus, currently on the run.

"Eheh... Old-timer, we both know you've got more important things to do than die trying to save my life. Go on, the lot of you..." Those were the last things your friends heard out of Augustus' mouth.

Rene and her party, minus Director Waldrick himself, showed themselves off of the battlefield and back towards Holmstead's harbor shortly after King Augustus' death.

Gods, after all that the man had told you in his nostalgia after meeting that Marion woman. You were sure that, with all you'd heard about how pleasant this Waldrick guy is, someone he had raised would listen to the reason of a childhood friend, but...

This empire is even viler than you'd thought, and now you've been forced to abandon the good king to his backstabber.

"Don't dawdle," your grandfather says, shaking you out of your angered thoughts, making clear to you the sound of hooves maneuvering through the crowded alley to the best of their ability. "Cavaliers are right at our heels."

"Cavalry, you say?" You brandish your Royal Axe, "I'll pay them back here and now with the gift from King Augustus!"

Darren groans. "Dyrus, many of us are wounded, and any moment now people might be coming to box us in from the other end of this alleyway!"

"Then this is the path we cut through!" You say, tightly clutching your weapon.

"Perhaps you ought to chastise him later instead of wasting time now," Via suggests.

Belle, in turn, nods. "Whatever our course of action, right now we're just wasting time acting as sitting ducks."

Darren groans. "There... is a minor chance, I suppose, that they won't be anticipating us cutting through the cavalry and going back the way we came. This could just end up getting us killed, but then again so can nearly every course of action at the moment."

Well, all this discussion leads to a cavalier trio in a line before you and Via, unable to get past one another. The frontmost one has a funny hat and an impressive moustache, leading you to assume he's the subcommander of this little bunch.

"Your armor is unlike Noban soldiers... What are people from the Empire doing here?" He asks, looking quite impatient and ready to bury that lance into you.

You don't answer (your experiences with Rene moments ago have proven that not everyone or every situation can be talked down), simply keeping still, daring him to draw nearer and die.

"Think yourself a warrior?" The man sneers. "I suppose we'll have Lady Hera beat that out of you."

That threat is enough to bring Belle to action, her and her pegasus flying up above you and Via. Gerard and your grandfather continue watching your originally-intended exit route pensively, as though assuming more men will be on you in but a moment.

"You're fighting a futile battle, boy," the cavalier says, trying to hide his nervousness with the situation. "Even if you get past me, Director Waldrick will not let you escape."

Continuing to waste no time with pleasantries with these monsters, you use the memory of Augustus to cut this man down to size!

"L-Lady... Her... a..." The man chokes out, his horse fleeing in a panic and knocking the other two cavaliers off of theirs.

"S-Sabas?!" One of them utters what you presume was the fallen man's name in disbelief before tightly clutching her Steel Sword and getting to her feet. "You'll pay for that!"

Those words have barely left her lips when Belle's own Iron Lance pierces them and retracts, leaving the final shocked and dismounted cavalier to be shocked into awareness by Via striking him across the neck with a dagger.

"U-ugh..." The man clutches his neck with one hand, the other gripping his own Iron Sword tighter than ever as he stands there, breathing troubledly.

"Oh, my... That looks quite painful," Via says, not sounding remotely concerned. "I'm a dainty thing, see, and have trouble killing people with a single strike." She flashes her blade again, giving the dismounted cavalier a smile. "I'm certain I could do it in two if you feel like following your partners."

"Y-you... You!" He exclaims, taking a frenzied swing at Via.

Via swerves slightly to the side of the highly-telegraphed strike before making good on her words, frowning and looking down at herself. "Now this uniform is ruined... Come, let's hurry before they send more cavaliers after us."

"Alright," you say, "no one else is following us, and nobody's ambushed us down the initial retreat route... Time to turn back around... around," you say.

No one has any particular objections, so head that way you do.

All around you, Nobans and the few fighters of Holmstead square off against Gerxel's conquerors, but you and your lot seem to mostly be able to slip under the radar, your grandfather having determined that it would be for the best if your smaller group was to fall back for the time being, leave the Nobans to handle this.

Towards the Northernmost edges of the city, you spy a white-haired, heavily-armored fellow, flanked by four lesser armors of varying equipment type, standing opposite a bulky, noble-looking bard of Holmstead with an impressive goatee and a pair of wounded Holmstead soldiers. The bard, while looking healthy himself, must be foolish to think he can defend against all of that!

"So you were earnest in your challenge..." The white-haired man muses to him. "It's an admirable foolishness to stand before me."

Belle nudges you out of your observation. "Sir Dyrus, let's not linger. Director Waldrick has yet to notice us."

You nod, reluctantly. Your Royal Axe could probably take a chunk out of Waldrick, but that's by no means going to end up being a FATAL chunk.

"Yet for all your boldness, Raleigh... You would attempt to incinerate my daughter before my eyes." You hear more of his irate tirade than arguably makes sense for you actively retreating the scene from a bit of a distance away. "I've witnessed people burnt to death, Raleigh. I do not know if you have, but it is awful, agonizing, and without immediate treatment and good fortune, potentially crippling. This reason alone is why you have not been swiftly slain already."

He goes on awhile longer, but you go out of his hearing range before he finishes.

"Hate to be that guy..." Gerard observes, pityingly. "Director Waldrick is brutal to his enemies..."

So, by the sound of things, that's Rene's father... You've gotta respect that Raleigh fellow for nearly killing her, then! Here's hoping his impending agonizing near-future leaves people with time to bail him out!

Regardless, you are far from the only fighters eventually forced to flee from Holmstead. Many Noban knights do the same, preferring to live to repel the Empire from their own homeland, along with the troops who defeated Lady Belinda.

You travel back North to August's Reach quickly as you can, the fall of Holmstead weighing heavily on your young mind.

Yeah, you don't have much to say either. The closest things to conversations you have before getting back to August's Reach are thanking Via whenever she attempts to comfort you with some sort of culinary item.

The nation is a much... Tenser place, in the absence of Augustus, and the castle at August's Reach is the destination to any number of Dukes and Duchesses, Marquesses and Marchionesses, trying to sort out: what now.

Your own thoughts of "what now," however, come when you discuss this unfortunate turn of events with Nia and Winona.

"And, uh... Director Belinda's assault was a complete disaster, by the sounds of things..." Nia says, perhaps caught between cheering you up with "good news" and being, in her own right, extremely upset about this.

More straightforwardly, Winona says, "a lot of wyvern riders died... I-I know they're not my comrades anymore, but still, when you've trained and flown with a group..."

"Do you know if your brother's alright?" You ask, immediately regretting asking before either sister can even respond.

Nia, however, is again the bearer of good news, this time more genuinely happy. "Marduk has survived, yes." Your immediate regret, so it seems, was not warranted! "We'll be able to see him again!"

Sounding uncertain, Winona cracks a bittersweet grin of her own. "Yeah... Definitely..."

"You don't sound too sure, Winona..." You say, concernedly. "Why wouldn't you be able to?"

"I'm just... Really worried for Marduk's safety," Winona confesses. "No way Belinda's going to take losing a massive fraction of her forces as a sign to lighten on her preferred methods. She's... Not nearly reasonable enough."

"And she became a Director while being so overly-aggressive?" You ask.

"The Empire's controlled virtually all of the wyrmite before now, and it's not easy to stop a wyvern without them or a bold enough archer or wind and thunder mage to enter their range and live..."

"Winona," you say, wanting to cut this thinking out before she makes her younger sister cry or something, "while all that's true... Your brother's not a fool! He's probably going to play it safe until you meet again, and then be more than willing to defect to be with his family."

"Y-yeah, I suppose so..." Winona says, still a bit uncertain.

Wanting to shift the subject away from the future of her older brother, Nia speaks up about another admittedly still-sore topic. "I still can't believe Rene would be so cold..." She honestly doesn't sound all too upset, given that Nia in particular probably has plenty of reason to have resented the late king.

"You know her?" You ask, to which both sisters nod.

Nia continues, "I... don't remember when we met all too well, though. It was a few years ago, but I remember liking her and Veiz a lot!"

"I could probably speak about what the sisters were like," Winona says, "if you... aren't tired of thinking about her."

"I mean," you start, finally feeling like the mood is beginning to lighten, "if me hearing about them doesn't make you jealous, be my guest!"

"Jealous?" Winona blinks a moment. "Why would it..." She snickers, giving your arm a light slap, "it's fine, I'm sure nothing I could say will infatuate you with these people you hate."

Nia blinks in slight confusion about the exchange, and you take a moment to wonder if you just flirted.

"Anyway," Winona says, piecing together her thoughts a few moments, "it was... A few years ago, like I said. Marduk was a... Bit of a popular topic of discussion when he first rose to prominence and got his job right alongside Belinda with so little 'proper' military training. It was... Well, a conversation-starter, and an academy in the archipelago sent a few students to Central for a few months. So Rene and Veiz were... around for awhile, we just never really crossed paths. I think Marduk was personally introduced to the director's daughters a few days before we met, and it was only for a brief dinner that Belinda treated them and us to so she could impress Director Waldrick's daughters."

"You've... Yet to get to the part where you remember what she was like," you say.

"Right, right, sorry. Anyway, she was... Quiet and studious, from what we saw, but also very fond of jokes, teasing Veiz more than a few times throughout the night, but... It was clear that she had a lot of compassion for others. So... yes, to hear about what Rene apparently did to an old friend like that... I mean, Veiz was sharp-tongued and enthusiastic to advance, so I can understand her part, but Rene..."

"That's... Given me a new perspective on the Rene who murdered King Augustus," you say. "The way you describe her and her sister reminds me of myself and Laurise."

"I hadn't thought of that," Winona says. "Regardless, I... know you're angry at the Empire, certainly, but... Remember that my brother is not the only decent person still fighting for them. You've a gift for speaking to people, and after you talked me down I would hate to see that lovely part of you lost to your anger."

"Should I leave?" Nia asks. "If you two are going to keep being weird, I mean..."

From there, you elect to simply spend the next while's worth of conversation catching up with Winona and Nia once again. They've been stuck in August's Reach a little while now, and might have interesting tidbits about the place to share, after all!

The nobility of Noba is completely unable to determine a worthy successor to King Augustus, and the man himself never produced an heir of any kind, so for the foreseeable future... There just isn't a presiding monarch.

Sir Jovan, a freckled, brown-haired paladin who had apparently overseen the very successful repelling of Director Belinda's forces, had this to say. "King Augustus gave his word that Noba would support your mother's resistance, and no one will defy that. Unfortunately," he continues, "the support we can grant is... Limited, with Holmstead's recent fall. Regardless, what troops we can spare, we will."

So, on top of assorted troops who'll be aiding the pockets of resistance when the time comes, you're also able to gain further travel companions for your smaller group! You and Darren ponder over the choices offered to you.

(Pick two or A)

>A. Biff and Byron, red and green cavaliers (a package deal!)

"You've an eye for an excellent team, then," Jovan says after Darren reports who your team would prefer the aid of. "These wanderers just... Showed up in Noba a short time before it was founded, and have served Augustus loyally and successfully wherever they went. Blending in among Holmstead's people, aiding in Alfred's smuggling operation once he reached land... You'd be hard-pressed to find a more skillful team."

When introduced to your new allies, you learn that they're those red and green knights you and, unbenownst to you, Samson, have seen around.

Biff and Byron's armors are a dulled red and green, respectively, Biff of average height, somewhat wiry and nimble in frame, while Byron is a naturally big guy. Biff's hair is short, a very slightly reddish brown, Byron's medium-length, neatly-combed, and dark green. Biff emits an aura of boisterousness and zeal, Byron of thoughtfulness. Biff has with him a Wyrmslayer sword and iron lance, Byron a Dragonpike lance and iron sword.

"So we're to be directly aiding the son of the resistance," Biff says cheerily, heartily grabbing and shaking your hand. "I'll gladly throw my life on the line for you as I would have my liege, and leave us both alive in the end to tell the tale!"

So he thinks he can overwhelm your hand, eh? Well, you prove yourself to have an even stronger grip!

"Oh my... Ah-hah, a competitive young axe-slinger." Biff, after a moment more of this, lets go, clutching his now-sore hand. "I've made close friends on an injurious first impression," he claims. He cocks his head towards Byron. "Haven't I? Affirm for the good sir!"

Byron smiles lightly, in the middle of offering a more sane hand and greeting to your grandfather, before shaking his head. "Is that what we're calling your aptitude for first impressions now, Biff?" Byron's face retains its small, friendly smile as he returns to speaking to your grandfather. "But by all means, Sir Darren, point us in whatever direction you deem necessary, and we can work out whatever details you might leave out."

"Sir Jovan did speak for just how flexible you two are," grandpa says, "and the versatility of missions you've accomplished for King Augustus."

Introductions aside, a few more days of planning pass, and the initial attempts at claiming Noba from the newly-captured Holmstead apparently end in failure due to the efforts of both a volunteer militia and Noban Knights who remained by the border.

Not only that, but you soon receive word from your sister!

'Dyrus, things are going quite well up here in Tordo. Mother has received a gift from the Ice Authority that, in time, will become absolutely invaluable, and seeing Ice and Fire Dragons transform is nothing short of breathtaking. Mother says that we're to meet again on the Western edge of the Desert region, then cross through to Garou Valley, but that she's left however you would prefer to navigate to this route to you and grandpa. I've also very finely honed my skills in this frigid mountain! Next we spar, don't think you can best me.'

Ah, Laurise...

Your grandfather extends on what Laurise referred to about "choosing routes." "There are several noticeable pockets of resistance we've come into contact with both within Central Gerxel and along the coastline in, naturally, Coastal Gerxel," he explains. "With Central's riders weakened and Coastal focusing its efforts on Noba, now is the perfect time to rally these groups... But, naturally, we can only pass through one, even if both will lead us to the Deserts eventually."

Which route ought you suggest your group take?

>A. the path through Central, notorious for its Wyvern Riders, including the ferocious Director Belinda
>B. the path along the coast. While wyverns are less common here, pirates and the like can also be found, and Director Waldrick will likely not turn a blind eye either...

"Director Waldrick..." You say to yourself.

"Out for blood?" Your grandfather asks. "Holmstead was a massacre, certainly, but... Is this reason enough to take this route?"

"The dissenters in Central are better-organized as it is. Share with them some wyrmite, point them in the correct direction, and... You know," you say, skipping out on the finer details for Winona's sake.

"...You're right," Winona says. "Director Belinda has been confident that there's virtually no noteworthy dissenters in Central. If they were to come out of the woodwork in response to the failed invasion..."

"Hauteclere prepared them for the eventuality of needing to simultaneously rise up," your grandfather says. "I suppose it need not be us who oversee it..."

Now, onto more benefits to challenging the coastline! Byron, quite knowledgeably, says, "while Director Waldrick's naval presence is impressive, he has far too much emphasis on the safety of the islands, given their... Bloody history. Most of his troops not stationed in Holmstead will be guarding the Southern Archipelago from itself, and this very slight thinning of his forces creates cracks for rebels to leak from."

"Anyone who has it out for Director Waldrick will be willing to side with us, I'm certain." Biff continue. "The issue lies in whether or not we'll associate with pirates and bandits for the sake of weakening one of the stronger pillars of the Empire."

"Out of the question," Darren says. "We will not associate Hauteclere's revolution with brigands. There are several cities sympathetic to the plight of the people along the coastline who Hauteclere has worked to earn the favor of. Should we outright wipe out the presence of troublesome types along the coast, it could completely secure their favor."

So... In layman's terms, prove that you'll fight with more compassion than the famously-generous Waldrick, so they'll be willing to do away with the Empire.

"She must be taking the failure of this partnership on such a massive scale awfully, if she's not lashing out at everyone else..." Nia is perhaps the first person you've ever heard say a kind word about Director Belinda.

Now you're curious. "What's she like... As a person, I mean?"

"Well, she's... Really tough on criminals and the like, to the point where she's pretty much wiped bandits out of Central completely, and she punishes anyone who breaks the rules extremely hard... But anyone in Central's military gets paid extremely generously if they do everything right!" She says.

"And if they don't?" You ask, somewhat skeptically.

"That's a... Case-by-case basis," Nia says, leading you to assume that there are harsh punishments for failure as well.

"Well, I'm going to call it a night now... Thanks for the chat, Nia," you say, yawning.

"Right... Yeah, we need to get going tomorrow!" Patting her wyvern, she yawns and snuggles into it, and you wonder just how the hell that's comfortable. "See you in the morning, babe~! Yeah, we're gonna do so good, yes we are..."

You leave Nia to babytalk with her wyvern as you return to August's Reach's guestrooms, laying down in your own and looking up at the ceiling in thought until you drift off into weird dreams about your assorted party members.

And so, once again, the plot branches. Waldrick and Dyrus will very likely end up meeting for a proper fight a couple Dyrus chapters down the line.

Thanks for playing, as always. Update twitter's qmgrandflocto, I'll be around in-thread to chat for awhile, and you can shoot ask.fm/qmgrandflocto a question or seven anytime.

Always a pleasure.

Sometimes I worry that I'm pushing the "obvious" prospective love interests too hard this time around, even when factoring in that "I have perhaps 16 threads per protagonist" stuff mentioned earlier.
