It's boring even for a children's book. What kind of awful parent would buy this boring trash for their son or daughter?

And while it's appropriate that GW can't appeal to a child when they themselves have had any sense of creativity sucked out of them like a fun vampire, but couldn't they have given this to any other author?

Yes, that's what drew me to 40K in the first place. What gets me is that there's so much they could do with the concept. For instance, a story about a Space Marine aspirant is basically the perfect one to aim at kids.

Well, until they get to the bloody trials and the horrible fates for those who fail.

You know how Spess Marines "Feel No Fear", they lack most other emotions, don't they? I wonder, do they lose it all at once or is it a gradual thing? A story about the slow erosion of humanity from one of the Emperor's servants would be a good tale. Maybe throw in some ambiguity about Chaos being "not so bad" or " Horus was perhaps justified".
>>
>>62189278
>That's where you're wrong, though. Normies don't buy this stuff, either. They pirate just as much.

>>
>>62189444
To be fair these days that's basically all you need half the time. Since nowadays loading a thing full of viruses is more likely to draw attention to yourself.

Better to just pile ads on your download site running off of servers based in Timbuktu and rake in cash that way with a few shitty fake links that are actually just gates to ad chains around the actual download which actually works rather than try to get like maybe a few hundred from europoors and penniless Amerifag teens in bumfuk Idaho via jacking their shit.

You reckon? I've been playing since around 2000 and to me a couple of kids books are completely irrelevant alongside even the 2009 codices let alone all the current edition guff that introduced some massive tonal shifts that runs roughshod over the established design language of the miniatures. Something which affects the core universe and how it looks on the tabletop surely has more impact.

A great story would be like this:

> Girl disguises herself as a boy to take the trials on Baal.
> Somehow makes it all the way there.
> Survives most of the trials (somehow is not discovered) and gets to the final trial.
> The last trial has her taken aside by the Chaplain, who explains to her that she can't be a Space Marine. The process is 100% lethal to women. They've tried, over the years, and you always, always end up with a corpse.
> "But that's not fair!"
> "The Imperium is not a kind place."
> "Then why did you let me take the trials, if I could never succeed?"
> "To be a trial to others."
> "..."
> "There are other ways to serve, but I see that you would not wish to accept. And aspirants either leave this place as Space Marines, or as the dead. Do you desire the Emperor's peace?"
> "...Yes."

THE ABSOLUTE STATE OF 40KIDDIES
>>
Flopendo!
>>
>>62186184

эзэн хaaн!
>>
These books are not for kids, they are for the parents of kids who want to think they are giving their kids something "safe".

The problem is that there is a huge market of those kind of books outside of GW. So the actual audience for this is even smaller.

These are books for parents who know what 40k is and specifically want to give a watered down safer version of it to their kids.
>>
>>62186384
> virtue signalling

Have you ever looked up what that term means? The strict psychological definition is “I’m a little basement incel who larps online as a Nazi and imagines that makes me edgy and threatening, when in fact my endless tantrums over how today’s hobbies aren’t ‘Aryan’ enough are just embarrassing. I am a massive disappointment to my parents and myself”

I wish they had approached it humorously. Basically a mostly serious attempt to write a children's book set in 40k. Then watch it fail miserably to be that because you can't really sanitize 40k enough to be a childrens book. Servo-sprite? Fuck that, the tonal dissonance when little zelia wakes up to a servo SKULL is hilarious. Then when that kind of shit gets boring, throw that chadmarine who seems to be part of the cast for some reason in unfiltered and watch him deal with the kids who think they're in a children's book.
>>
Holy shit that font size
These'll be some short-ass books
>>
>>62195641
No, 'virtue signalling' means 'I'm showing off how virtuous I am by engaging in a flashy display of hand-wringing'. Be honest with yourself, how much do you care about women's rights and shit? You don't, really. You're hoping someone notices your white-knighting.

That's why virtue-signalling has never gone away as a word. It hits right to the heart of things, that a lot of people don't actually give a shit. They're frauds, and they know it.
>>
>>62196012
It would be really funny if these are IN FACT 40K stories, but the super-violent stuff takes place off-screen. Like the nice Inquisitor Eisenhorn going "Kids, I need you to...Help me decode this ancient document. I'll be right back" and he comes back later all covered in blood and says "The cultists saw the error of their ways and decided to leave very, very suddenly. They won't be back."
>>
>>62196056
>You're hoping someone notices your white-knighting
So, by definition, no one is virtue signalling on 4chan, right? No one posting anonymously at any rate.

I think people are people, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity even if that means that people who are currently in a privileged position in society (surprise, this includes the people wasting time posting on the internet) need to sacrifice some of that privilege in order to make things better for less fortunate people.

And I can't be virtue signalling, because I don't have a trip code.

This. I don't care about ruining muh grimdark or something, it's just... do they really think this is going to attract kids to them? Because when I first got into 40k like in first half of primary school it was the darkness, grittiness, violence and all that shit that fucking fascinated my small boy brain and made me fell in love with the setting. If they had hit me with this polite kids friendly shit instead I would have probably just mehed around it. Grimdark IS 40k's strong part, why avoid it instead of embracing it?
Where's the sense in trying to attract people to a setting with something that's stylistically completely unlike said setting?
>>
>>62195641
>I’m a little basement incel who larps online as a Nazi
Do you honestly hold this as a belief, or are you merely regurgitating liberal talking points you've cribbed off Reddit and facebook? I ask only as I've seen the same variation on your diatribe in many, many other places.
>I am a massive disappointment to my parents and myself

first things first: i don't want to insult you.
b) you may get insulted
three or c) did you ever contemplate they don't -want- to attract guys like you (were)? maybe they -do- want to attract the "polite kids" to their systems who you think won't find it attacting if they used the grimderp versions?

just a thought

This is mediocre.

As this is a book made for kids, I'm surprised they haven't played the "princess" angle more for the little Rogue Trader heir. If disney is any indication, bitches love princesses.
>>
>>62196792
Why would that insult me? I'm not some insecure edgelord dude and wasn't one as a kid either. This doesn't change the fact that little boys love over the top shit, darkness, epic fights, struggle etc. and 40k is great at delivering that. Not only little edgelords or little neckbeards but most of them, I could guarantee to you that if you took 100 random boys out of a primary school and showed them some standard 40k material a vast majority would find it at least pretty cool. This thing not only does not embrace the setting's strong parts, but also it's simply rather bland and unremarkable. Why would any kid choose that as their sci-fi of choice to obsess about when could choose for example equally child friendly Star Wars with lightsabers and jedi and shit? This is 40k without all the things that make it cool and appealing.
And even if I am wrong about that and this will attract those "polite kids" that wouldn't like the violence and grimdark, then what? They're going to move from kids books into the normal universe... only to find out it's exactly violence and grimdark

Little life lesson for you, Junior. Read this over and over until it becomes your new matra:
Respect is earned.
Now I know your generation of participation trophies has it in their head that they can live on easy mode, getting free money, free education, free everything, but there's a little thing called Reality that's got a nasty bite when you finally leave kindergarten for adults (you'd call it College of course) and enter what we 30 year old boomers call: "The Real World"
>even if that means that people who are currently in a privileged position in society (surprise, this includes the people wasting time posting on the internet) need to sacrifice some of that privilege in order to make things better for less fortunate people.
Oh fuck me. Privilege? You've been brainwashed but good kid. I know nothing I've said will get through to you, but maybe, just maybe, you can see this for what it is, a little granule of the Universal Truth.

>attract the "polite kids"

Not the anon you're replying to, but I think you parsed his sentence wrongly; "polite, kids friendly" is more what I think he was getting at. There's a significant disconnect between what marketers and parents consider "child friendly" and what children actually like. Consider how many of the most fondly remembered cartoons are ones that weren't afraid to occasionally go into dark places; challenging the audience by giving them difficult or unpleasant material in the end made the experience more memorable than something sanitised and safe.

The point is, if even a paranoid mass murderer with a hair trigger was all about fraternity between citizens and nations, you really have to be deluded to think that the smallest opening to others you make will result in you being backstabbed. It can, but you have to give them several kilometers of additional rope before it happens, and there are numerous safety measures available on both a personal and a societal level to prevent that.

tl; dr: In every area of life, if you get fucked over, it's not because your good heart was abused at the first opportunity, it's because you did nothing to prevent it for an extended period of time despite it being right before your eyes.
Don't blame your kindness, blame your repeated stupidity.

And learn the correct lessons, like beginning to think about what you do, and not being an asshole because you were wronged once.

Besides, St Just was the real criminal, Robespierre gets some of the flak that should be directed towards the latter.

> argue in good faith
Aha, you seem to have mistaken this thread on a children’s book for a political debate on race and gender. Might I suggest there’s a board you can go back to?

Oh right yeah. Men play with little plastic action figures and use their imagination to believe they're doing something and crying when you call it a toy

Sorry it's hard to make the distinction with what little kids playing with little toys and using their imagination to believe they're doing something and crying when you call it a toy

That's literally how it is on Baal, though. The Dante novel makes it clear that the Chaplains are horrific dicks. They picked a boy who was dying from cancer and let him participate, so they could see if Dante would kill his friend (and fail the test).

They even say "Yes, we could cure his cancer. However, we will not. He will live amongst the blood thralls for the time he has left."
