Do talk about fight club
>What is fight club?
Actual games on /tg/. Post character images, stat them and then have them fight other characters in an arena. The goal is just to show off games you think are cool with waifus and/or husbandos.

>What can I do?
You got a game you think is cool? Stop arguing on the internet about it and come show us how it works.
You got a waifu you want statted? Post her! Optionally provide a bit of context if there is any to be had.

>Resources
Dropbox with all the characters made so far for GURPS: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/25p54bu6p9n4s0o/AADHAabWB0GqY-ttJswheQjda?dl=0

>Rules
Basic fighters are made on 100 pts. There is talk of a middleweight division on 200 but nothing solid yet.
Fighters gain 2pts on a win.

She crippled both of Lug's arms end of last thread, but I guess they weren't cleaved OFF so it doesn't count. She's gotta step it up if she's going to compete with Grishnak.

This fight might not happen immediately, as I'm going to eat dinner and such first. And I'd like to find someone to play one of them across from me, since it's such a high profile fight.

You've got four basic options.
>Run a game and tell us about it.
Any game is fine. These have mostly been GURPS, but we're here to show anon's our favorite games and have fun with it.
>Make a character for the fights.
If you hand in a finished character sheet for GURPS, I or someone else WILL run at least one fight with it. If it's for another game with no active AM, well, you may have a wait I'm afraid.
GURPS fighters have mostly been TL4, 100pts, 50 disad, under 5 grand in gear, and 'no cheese,' which more or less means a 100pt swordsman should have a chance against them. No 6d eye lasers or Malediction: Sudden Head Explosions.
If you post something dumb like a space marine, I'll still run it at least once for your effort, against something.
>Post character art and ask to see your Waifu in a fight.
The more descriptive you get the more likely someone will make the character, but you're sort of at the whims and free time of others here.
>Cheer from the stands
Place bets, commentate, write greentext. Any way you want to contribute is fine by me.

Can Anna afford any SL upgrades? Its kind of thematic imo. They get more skilled as they fight more fights
>>
>>82411474
I think it would make sense to align SL caps with point limit brackets but figuring out the breakpoints might be a little bit tricky. I imagine if SL upgrades are legal from the get-go, then more optimization oriented character builders would just dump all points into main weapon skill after every fight. Perhaps for every X fights or Y points earned, a fighter's SL cap is raised by 1?
>>
>>82411173
Speaking of Usagi I was thinking of giving her a SM+1 axe. That'd actually put 1 handed use at a -1 penalty for her.

>>82411474
>>82411543
I think it SL caps should only get raised every like... 20 points?
However taking techniques could be a play, it'd encourage really diversifying what can be done rather than pumping raw SL
>>
>>82411428
That's...actually a really cool idea for a fighter. Might be pretty strong, I'll throw it on the idea bin.
>>82411474
If I'm counting right. (I lose track easily, I should make a spreadsheet...)
She's got 6pts to spend. One more fight and she can afford the last rank in her style talent. (7pts) It may be better for her to save for it than to buy a rank in Sword for 4pts now.
>>82411543
Instead of applying math to it, a simple solution may simply be "you can only raise your SL to that of the best opponent you've faced (Or beaten, or lost to?), +1."
So if the starting cap is 16, nobody can just buy their way to 20 until they hone their skills against peers.

Is it possible to pump techniques above SL? If so those might need some limit as well, otherwise it seems good. I think I recall someone not liking taking Targeted Attacks as a technique though, so if the AMs prefer to avoid that I can note it in the txt.

>>82411625
To be honest that seems trickier to keep track of than pure math, so my personal vote is for a hard number of points earned. 20 might be a bit high though since that would mean winning 10 times or losing 5 times, so I propose that the SL cap increases every 12 points (6 victories or 3 losses).

>>82411690
>Is it possible to pump techniques above SL?
Yes but those are usually ones that have some massive usage penalty, like disarm which is like -6 for most uses.
>>
To answer some Conan questions from the previous thread >>82409669
>How's the core die mechanic work?
You get 1 success for each die that rolls equal/under the TN, then another success if the die also rolls equal/under the focus number for that skill (which is usually the 1-3 range). Default roll is 2d20 but there are various ways to purchase more dice. Modiphius uses the same basic engine for all their games (Dune, John Carter,Fallout etc) but they generally differ in attributes and how TNs are calculated. Conan is on the crunchier end
>What's an effect and how do you get it?
They're symbols that occur on combat dice, which are just a relabelled d6. 1 and 2 = that much damage respectively, 3 and 4 = blank, 5 and 6 = 1 damage + effect. Effect usage depends on what qualities your weapon has. Hypatia's bow had Piercing 1 which let her ignore one point of armor soak for each effect rolled, while Ulrike's crossbow could spend effects on extra damage provided she used Exploit the previous turn.
>Momentum is an effect-currency you get for MoS? That's rad, but where'd the bonus momentum in turn 4 come from?
Correct. The 2 bonus momentum came from attacking a prone target with a ranged weapon at close range
>>
>>82412052
Very cool, anon, thank you for explaining. I thought that was it on the bonus momentum, but my brain didn't want to process it entirely.
I've been working on a game based on a totally different 2d20 principle, so I'd been fairly curious what this other 2d20 engine I keep hearing about was and how it functioned.
Would Ulrike be boned after that shot, or are the turns abstract enough a crossbow's not a huge action economy liability? I get an impression towards the latter.
>>
>>82412121
You could fire off a crossbow every turn without penalty, but it's (probably, I'm still fairly new to the game) tactically more sound to go for the Exploits as it has some pretty monster damage potential if you land a hit. The thing that really boned Ulrike was taking two wounds before her first turn, as it penalised both her attack and defense

With brackets, named characters participating on it for their own reasons and so on. We randomly decide who fights who and do like a regular tourney.

Alright. Getting my shit together. Sorry for the delay, folks. A bit under the weather today and had to start plotting a long march for my Saturday game.

Anna will save her points for now. I'm torn between getting her the last level in her style talent or some new techniques and lifting strength for armor.
Usagi was changed as her author describes.
Anna is the faster combatant and will go first.
>Turn 1
Anna closes by 6 to 12
Usagi walks forward leisurely, evaluating.
>Turn 2
Step/Evaluate mirror.
>Turn 3
Again. But Anna steps back to maintain the range at 9y
>Turn 4
Anna dashes to range 2 for an MaA. There's a houserule that Evaluate adjusts the cap on this, so she makes her roll capped at 11. Critical hit on a 4. Result 11: no additional effect. Random location, Usagi takes 18 injury to the neck!
She remains upright and fails her berserk CR! She's immune to pain and stunning, but MUST AoA every turn!
She steps in and AoA deceptives for a random location! -6/-3! Anna can't retreat so makes her base parry.
She fails from the deception penalty, the gigantic axe connects with her chest, and even through her armor blasts her straight off her feet into unconsciousness!

Usagi fails her berserk roll again. There are no enemies so she just attacks anything there is. She turns behind her and barrels towards the gates.
It takes her several tries to make the two consecutive climb checks to get over the gate, but she keeps making her HT rolls.
People scream and run.
She smashes a bystander in the chest and he staggers backward. She AoA's at his head and smashes his brains across the stunned audience before finally collapsing of her wounds.

Holy fuck that was...I knew the move and attack was a mild gambit, but it almost payed off. I didn't see Usagi getting saved from a lethal neck wound by failing her berserker CR. Nor did I expect her to fail it after the fight was over and go after the crowd. Berserkers, folks.

I'm slightly in the wrong here and move and attack, RAW, denies your parry completely, as well as retreat.
But if we're already houseruling that AoA is -4 defense and not 'no,' I see no reason you can't parry after an MaA.
It even denies parrying with a different weapon. I disagree with this strongly.
"Hey what should the penalty for move and attacks in melee be."
"-4, cap the skill hard at 9, no retreating, no parrying even with another weapon."
"And for ranged?"
"Eh don't worry about it."

Fuckin' wild, I tell you. Crazy status and ability interactions like that are one of the things I love about this mess.

Basic set gives no specific crippling effect for the neck. Just a different damage type code.
MA only allows decapitation if the character dies from a major cutting wound to the neck. Neck injuries also bleed worse, but the interval is still meaningless in most combats at 30 seconds and -2 HT mod.

Our potential houserule was that either you must die from the attack to be decapitated, per MA, or it must have dealt your entire HP pool plus twice your spine DR (Which is normally 3) in raw penetrating damage, before injury multiplier. This was generally regarded as "Possibly giving more to cutting damage than it needs," but "hilarious against goblins." We never went with it, as it's still too easy.

Very nice. It may be worth, at a later date, sorting out the characters into sub-categories. Just so it's clear that say, The limited use alternate form of one of my player's characters being played on a lark slap-chopping the 100pt bracket isn't exactly a legitimate fight.

Generally I've been breaking it down into
>100pt bracket
Everyone we know and love
>Steve
Is his own special thing
>House
Giant Dad, Raptors, Goblins. Fights that are hard but 'fair,' at least in event fights
>Misc.
Glove, Rubedo, Miss Salzzar, space marines, etc. Non-recurring that are there to be used on request. Spuriously canon.

>So what's the difference between 'House' and 'Misc?'
House fighters are fair enough that experience and prizes can be gained, and fighters may accrue permanent injuries or die. They're part of the potential 'progression' pool.
Misc. is shit that's not fair at all and doesn't 'count.'

There are currently TEN valid 100pt combatants, not counting ones that haven't been fully integrated yet like Ocylae above. When that number hits 16, or 12 if character creation slows down, we're going to hold a bracket tournament.
>Winners advance to next bracket
>Losers go into the loser pool.
>Once the brackets have a winner, the loser pool will have a BATTLE ROYALE
>The winner of the BR will fight the bracket champion.
>A halftime show may be held

I'm willing to take suggestions on the halftime show.
Throwing peasants to the animals is always fun.
I have half a mind to actually stat the elven swordmaster from my Saturday game and his wife and have them fight several ogres and about a hundred goblins just for laughs.
Or I could run that Car Wars demo as a halftime demolition derby.
I don't have any more relevant pics, so have an image demonstrating what sort of game Car Wars is.

Two proposals:
>Rename Misc to Special Guests
>Add Steve to a preexisting category
You say Steve is his own special thing, but I'm not exactly sure why. The way I see it, he could be in any of the three categories depending on how you are handling him:
>progresses -> challenger
>does not progress but gives progression -> house fighter
>does not progress and gives no progression -> special guest
If there is some other reason to treat him differently I will acquiesce and make a new category in the repo.

Anyway, I'm awake again for now and experimenting with the Gitlab Wiki functions. My overall goal is to make it easy for thread anons to submit characters and edits directly to the repo. The HTML page looks nicer than the cluttered in-built wiki but is easier for anons with no git experience to mess with. Expect the site not to remain exactly as it is.

Question: if i just want to use a System which is not GURPS then how do you determine how's the character going if anyone else uses that
>>
>>82423476
>Rename Misc to Special Guests
Agreed
>Add Steve to a preexisting category
I will leave that up to the audience.
My reasoning is simply that while it's a fun idea to see him participate and have to become someone else to survive, despite his losing the every time so far the fairness of a man with a glock is uncertain, so I feel uncomfortable just outright declaring him a 'legitimate contestant' as it were. He currently occupies the house folder in the dropbox and theoretically gains XP.
>>82420174
>>82420379
Just to weigh in here; I have reservations about Bulletproof Nudity. I'm not going to try and demand changes or anything, just thought I'd bring it up to talk about.
The effect of armor at all vs characters like Anna and Usagi is, unless it's pretty hefty plate, somewhat questionable. I feel the game designers monstrously fucked up their own choice-economy between wearing armor and not for fantasy genres. Against a ST6+ character with a +7 add on dice for their weapons, all even platemail is doing is mitigating how badly you're fucked. In 1v1 versus a character like that, Armor can be more of a liability if it gets you to an encumbrance threshold.
(This is WAY worse in RAW, the article used for fantasy armor reduces armor weights considerably because of this effect, but it's still somewhat there.)
So Bulletproof Nudity is *FIVE* points and a promise not to do something you weren't going to do anyway in exchange for literally *ONE HUNDRED* points of enhanced defenses for a woman with no shirt.
That seems incredibly jank.
>>82424607
>how do you determine how's the character going if anyone else uses that
I'm sorry but I do not understand the question
>>
>>82424607
This is some serious ESL going on but I will try and interpret. No matter the system any character that participates in a fight will be added to the scoreboard. As for special rules and progression, that's up to the Arena Master(s) of that game system. We have a system set up for GURPS because we have multiple GURPS AMs. If you are the only one running a particular game system you are more than welcome to set the arena rules yourself. If there are multiple anons running in the same system as you, I recommend hashing out with them what sort of special rules and progression mechanic you would like to use. If you get something like that worked out, it can be added to the repo.

>>82424679
I'm fine with making Steve into a Special Guest, but I think I misunderstood your categorization. To clarify to the greatest degree possible:
>Do house fighters progress?
>Do house fighters grant progression?
If the answer to both is yes, then it seems the real difference between Challengers and House Fighters is simply power level, in which case I would suggest changing the nomenclature so that they are merely a higher tier of Challenger rather than a special category.
>>
>>82423561
>what is this cancer?
Games. You know 'bout those right?
>I'm certain all of you belong in hell for the sheer amount of autism on display.
Welcome to gaming pre 2000 friend. It used to have game parts.
>Mechanical representation of personality traits like gullible and lazy and being a loner?
Yes, and I will explain to you why, as a game design principle. More because I think it's interesting than anything.
First of all, compulsions strong enough for mechanics are disadvantages. You get points back for these. Instead of just saying "Write down five fun facts about your character :D :D :D" like newer RPGs, GURPS says "You can trade your character's self-control for more points to make them good at stuff. You wanna be good, right?"
You will notice this as an incentive basically every player can recognize. "You can have more stuff, but you have to make a dude with actual personality traits."
>"Okay, but now I have this 'berserker' or 'lecherousness' roll on my character sheet that can take away control of my character!"
Yes and no. It's there to force you into roleplaying situations you didn't want, but accepted the risk of by putting it on your sheet. you still roleplay your character through them.
Sometimes you take a rarely occuring bloodlust, roll badly, and murder a prisoner you really kinda needed. Now what? Well "now what?" is the interesting part of games. And this whole subsystem is one GURPS uses to push you into "Oh shit, now what?" situations, or stoke character drama, or any number of things.
While the game says "The GM can ask you to make a control roll," and he very well might, 99% of the time I see players make these willingly, of their own accord, without prompting. Because having a mechanism to fall back on to decide how your guy reacts and what you should roleplay is *fun.*
The entire reason we play games with dice is to push us into situations where we have to roleplay a character through some unexpected situation, right?
>>
>>82424679
>>82424806
Addendum: We can keep the House Fighter category for combatants that give progression but probably don't progress themselves (like the Velociraptors or the Goblin Gang) but if a combatant like Giant Dad both progresses and gives progression then he should really be considered a Tier X Challenger (as opposed to the Tier Y of our 100 point Challengers).
>>
>>82424912
>>82423561
So really it boils down to a mechanism for that. It can be hard for players of other types of games, or newer players to grasp, but the mechanics of any game are agents in the story. The 'autistic numbers' aren't there to keep you from telling a story, they're there to help reveal one to you.
Ask yourself what's more interesting; That Bjorn the berserker was pulled into a bar brawl one night, lost control of himself against his wishes, and smashed the heads of every man and woman in the place because of his rage, bringing shame upon himself?
Or that Bjorn the berserker's barbarian rage is just a thing that gives him +2 damage and some extra HP in combat when he wants to, so he punched that one dude and left?
So yeah, in conclusion; the mechanics are there to help you uncover the story. If they only have bearing on combat and skill checks, they're only doing half the job.
>Can I play? I wanna play.
Yeah dude. If you put the effort in, it gets rewarded.
>What books do I read?
Basic Set and martial arts mostly. Check out the general
>I don't understand GURPS
That's fine
>it's big and gay, pls help
Bro chill.

>>82424806
>>82424922
"House fighters" are those that grant progression but don't progress, you are correct.
>>
>>82425002
Alright, so considering Giant Dad again:
>House Fighter
>does not progress
>grants progression
That raises one last question for me. Can Giant Dad be permanently injured or killed like a Challenger? I'll assume that generic House Fighters like Velociraptors and Goblins can just be replaced, but Giant Dad is unique.

That's an interesting one. I would say that named house fighters CAN die, but not giant dad because he's got a bonfire in the old castle outside of town.
Lug is super fucking dead, and any other ogres will use a different name.
While it may be interesting to see some progression out of them, like maybe one of the goblins actually gets good or something, it's better imo to handle that in some bespoke fashion than to bother tracking points.

Friend, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I must inform you that Bulletproof Nudity has now been forbidden for being severely undercosted for the benefit it provides. The AMs are still down to run Ocylae but it is requested that you update the sheet to exclude Bulletproof Nudity. Usagi will likewise be revised. Sorry to say so after you already submitted your character. We're still working out all the details for the GURPS arena.
>>
>>82425915
I think it might be fair that if you submit a meme character like Ocylae, they might get relegated to House Fighter at some point (either from the start or after demolishing a couple of fights).

The weak should fear the strong, pic related

But for real, the battle was very close and won by luck, seems like they are very even. The berserker thing is the very least that a Bunny Barbarian Babe like Usagi should have. Don't think she is that optimized, its just what you would expect from Conan-inspired as a cute girl running around in a bunnysuit.

Between noble party girl Anna with STDs and guillable boycrazy barbarian girl Usagi, I think we have a pretty big and fun roster of character.

I wonder if making a rich character would make for an interesting challenge.
On one hand, with a lot of money you can stack a lot of armor.
One the other hand, without CP for also getting a lot of ST, that would be less useful.
>>
>>82427567
I think, to keep everything on an even footing, challengers shouldn't be able to start with wealth.
But Richy Rich as an arena house fighter could be fun.
>>
Looking at GURPS.
So lowered stats & disadvantages would both be capped at +50 cp gained for the purposes of this FC?
>>
>>82427715
Yup, that's how it's usually done in GURPS and is the rule we've defaulted to as well. You can look here to see other characters for examples:
https://gitlab.com/WhiteZhark/fight-club/-/tree/master/Characters/Challengers
Go download GCS and use it for your character building if you haven't already.
>>
>>82427715
Lowered stats are not strictly disadvantages under the normal rules. Nor are they here, but you shouldn't really take IQ under 9-10 as it has little bearing on most fights, and is just 'free points' in this context.
Likewise, your racial profile taken as a whole is neither an advantage or disadvantage, however it comes out; but again shouldn't be cheesed too heavily.
Unfortunately, the points don't equate to any 'real' balance, so there's a level of good sportsmanship required.
>>82426844
I gave her it because the OP of thread 0 I made her to fuck with wasn't playing along. I removed it when he seemed to get his shit together and play along. If people want it back on her sheet, I don't really care either way though.

>>
>>82428004

>>
>>82428057
-1 from people who know about it. And if they do any attempts at using sex-appeal against them just automatically fail.
>>
>>82427811
Thanks for that.
But one more thing! I can’t tell, do quirks & perks cancel out each other, & if so, how many can you take?
If not, how do they work? From skimming it looks like they don’t have a hairline approach.
>>
>>82428191
They don't cancel out. You can (and should) take up to 5 Quirks. Each one gives you 1 point back which does NOT count toward the normal Disadvantage limit. Perks cost 1 point each and are not mandatory, so just pick what you want. You can look through GCS for perks that seem interesting and then reference them in the books.
>>
>>82428191
You can have up to five quirks, and they're worth -1 point. They're separate from disadvantages, and are mostly 'finish rounding out your character's flavor,' incentive.
Perks are just 1pt advantages with no other special rules

GCS can't do that for you because there might be legitimate reasons for you to lower or raise attributes arbitrarily. E.g. NPC making, spider crabs from Planet X, etc.

Anon... uh... I think maybe you should download GCS and try again. I like the concept but I have no idea what happened here.
>>
>>82429792
Skill levels are based on distances form the attribute & the skills difficulty right?
So with 10dex, getting an average skill of axes to 14 (a difference of 4) would cost [16+12+8+4+2+1]. So 43
Than an easy skill, again going to 14, would cost [12+8+4+2+1]? So 27.
43+27 = 70
For 70 character points spent on skills?
>>
>>82429843
That's uh, not even slightly correct
A skill costs 1 point to get at (Attribute) SL. For each rank of difficulty above Easy, that SL goes down by 1, so a Very hard skill starts at attribute-3.
The next rank costs 2 points, then every rank after that costs 4. So 14 for an easy skill would be 1+2+4+4 = 11.
>>
File: SkillCostTable.jpg (13 KB, 418x206)

>>82429843
I can definitely see how you made that mistake, but take a closer look at the skill table. The leftmost column says FINAL skill level. So, the math is 1+2+4+4+4+4, not 1+2+4+8+12+16.
>>
>>82429871
Correct: it's 1, then 1, then 2, then 4. There's two 1s in there.
>>
>>82429898
Ahaha you're right, I was looking at the table and still did it wrong. Ok, so the math is actually 1+1+2+4+4+4 = 16 to get an average skill based on DX 10 to SL 14.

Anon, I get what you're saying, but that's not how GURPS works. In GURPS, if you don't pay points for something, it is not true of your character. If she does not take any Appearance advantages or disadvantages she has "average" looks. Classic Features doesn't automatically make you a pretty noble because that's what you say your background is. Picrel is what Classic Features actually does. Fat, in turn, means you have at about 150% of the average weight for your ST, so it really does mean fat. Follow this anon's >>82430648 advice.

Giving Basic a read right now. I'm curious, how suicidal is unarmed combat? Things seem quite simulationist in lethality, but I'd presume stuff from the martial arts sourcebooks makes it more viable.
>>
>>82430904
Generally going barehanded against an armed combatant is a bad idea and the rules reflect that, although Grishnak has been doing alright for himself so far

Without houseruling unarmed combat is generally weaker than armed combat. Grappling has uses but Grishnak actually started off at 110 points instead of the usual 100 because he needed it. Striking martial arts are just straight up worse than weapons for many reasons. Back when I was thinking about running my own campaign I did a lot of thinking on how striking martial arts could be brought up to par because I didn't want to leave the monk archetype out in the cold.

Her arms are skinny I’ll give you that, but the lady is a cow.
Don’t worry though, not her most scandalous feature by far!

skub aside, is combat reflexes so necessary if defense is high & high pain threshold is taken? I does high pain threshold not adequately protect from being stunned?
In adding it in either way, just curious.
>>
>>82431067
Combat reflexes is essentially a 15pt tax on playing a combat character at all. You can maybe get away without it in an arena, but it's the cheapest way to get +1 universal AD anyway.
>>
If a system is completely not suited for solo combatants, on multiple levels, would there still be interest in seeing it demo'd? Been ruminating on a bigger party vs. encounter thing to stop it all being GURPS. Waifus will sill be present, as will dinosaurs.

I have no idea how viable it is but I'm gonna try to make my Norferner a grappling knife-fighter. Anything in particular I should be looking for?
>>
>>82431209
Dual Weapon attack with both his wrestling skill and knife skill so he can grab people and knife them in the same turn without penalty.
(Though he may want to feint with the knife first on that turn.)
We use an alternate set of grappling rules so things like power-grab don't work. But on the flip, being fat gets you a small bonus to pinning.
Grapple rolls are ST+Grapple Skill SL+Mods, with the most common mod being for size. So being jacked is just as important as being good.
You may want to check out some grappling techniques in PY-34
And lastly, when you're grappling a dude, you attack with *everything* as if it were part of the grapple. Which halves location penalties. So if you to shank a dude in the face, grabbing him first is really the way to do it; Grapple+Knife can be a great combo. One of the characters in my Saturday game, her whole melee deal is knife+Judo, and with enough points invested it gets rather stupid.
>>
>>82431252
Oh good, I was already planning on making him fat.
I also noticed something called 'testicle grab' in the Martial Arts book and feel I have to take it.

Champs

I tried doing her justice, tho I went wth the saber that she has with her on the pic rather than the giant axe (because Usagi already uses an axe).

My first GURPS sheet, tell me if I did it right. I tried to give her flavorful Advantages like being very rich, but those costed a lot of points...which meant that I had to pick a bunch of disavantages for her too which were also flavorful, like compulsive spending and Bully.

Here is Anabele Proudchest.

Not sure if she is exactly a GOOD fighter, but I was thinking that her startegy is starting the fight trying to intimidate her oponents wth some insuts and shit talks.

It is good, yes. Feint is one of the few ways that you can really bypass someone's defenses. It's the next step of optimization after the very basic "take weapon skill to SL cap", but it's not illegal, don't sweat it.
>>
>>82431903
Aye aye. Now to figure out armor.
Does it penalize grappling at all? Doesn't seem to reduce your dexterity like it does in most RPGs.
Flavor-wise it'd be better to have him running around in his Norf FC tee, but lethality is an issue here.
>>
>>82431915
Armor only penalizes DX if you're wearing too much or it's ill-tailored, yes.
He wouldn't be the only unarmoured fighter, but most of those have natural armor.
I'd allow him to buy DR 1 (Tough skin) for ablative fat.
And an arbitrary amount of tough skin DR for crushing only as his bulk just absorbs the blow.

While high DX does have other utility, it takes increasing five different DX linked skills at 4pts to make up for a point in it if you want raw skill levels. The utility of DX above 10-11 on his build is kinda "eh."
>>
>>82431941
Ah, I do save a lot by lowering it and just investing in skills instead. Makes a bit of room for tough skin, and maybe more skills.

"It depends."
Using DR7 basic set heavy plate armor;
In a historical campaign where you don't expect to see a realistic guy pass strength 13-14 unless he's monumentally jacked? Borderline damage immunity vs lesser men, unless they've got big dumb poleaxes and shit. Even then, a big sword has to do more than 14 raw damage to actually penetrate instead of just doing impact trauma.
In a fantasy campaign with ST 16-18 barbarians are swinging around longaxes? Well, it'll stop you from getting one-shot most of the time.

But take Anna for an example, swinging that Zweihander around for 2d+4 at (effective) strength 13, with a fine quality sword. The average damage there is 11, so you're still taking an average of 4 crushing past DR7 plate. Enough to max out shock if you're struck, and enough to the head to probably put you to sleep. IF she boxcars the damage, it's enough to cleave through, and that's bad times.

Now on the flipside if we take Marcia with her broadsword. her maximum damage is eight. Enough to bonk you for one point of crushing damage. She will have no choice but to do something else to try and hurt you, because just cleaving away won't cut it.

So, depends heavily on the opponent, what effect you'll get out of good armor.

It occasionally has or had a tendency to have some rules that maybe went a bit too far. 3e vehicles is such a complete meme they haven't even bothered to make a 4e vehicles. And The Deadly Spring is a whole...thing.

Overall it's really not that complicated no. The only people I usually see screeching think rolling dice a few extra times in the process of firing a shotgun make the game 'too complicated to be playable by real humans,' and other such shit.
If they saw the games I got into the hobby through, their heads would fucking explode.

Fine mail
and then on top of it Medium Plate
DR 10 (or more, if you are rich enough to make the armor of quality) on most body parts, but you get a lot of limitations due to the restrictive nature of the armor - limited peripheral vision, lessened dexterity, counting as Ham Fisted due to the gauntlets, etc.
Advanced plate armor also offers some joint protection (limits how fare your joints can bend) protecting you against some grappling techniques.

At 100 CP you'd struggle to afford both the armor and the stats to properly take advantage of it. The mega-armored knight is usually someone that is either a meme or at least somewhat advanced. Fine, heavy armor is something for "historical" characters to look forward to.
For comparison, the "starting wealth" of a TL4 person is $2000 (in abstract game-money, this might be something like 500 silver coins otherwise). Layering plate and mail just for the torso/vitals/groin is ~ $3400 or ~ $5200 if you go for heavy stuff. It also weighs ~25kg total.
Covering the whole body in some degree of layered plate and mail will give you DR 10 in most places (7 on the face and 0 on the eyes) cost near $10k and weigh near 51 kg total.
Adding all the functional extras to the plate armor would bump the DR to 12, lower the total weight to ~45kg and the total cost to over $130k an armor fit for a king.

As for whether it would be fun? If wearing armor is all the character does, they would be fun only in the sense of having to actually think what to attack them with. The fun in playing a knight in GURPS comes from your opponents being equally armored and in having to juggle a large array of weapons for every situation, from your lance to your polearm to your hand weapon. And having to consider which techniques to master - hooking and shoving around with your polearm, or just going for maximum damage? If you're forced to use a sword, which grip and distance do you prefer? Do you like to go empty-hand-and-sword to grab people and shank them, or do you grip your sword with both hand for increased control so you can aim at chinks in the enemy armor? etc

I think a good armored character might fun here, but they would most likely be armored like a Roman Gladiator or one of the London Lobsters.

Basic set gear is pretty generic and for that reason inaccurate.
It might be a good idea for whoever's managing this circus to make a ruling on what gear is acceptable, because mixing up e.g. Low-Tech and Basic randomly can end up with weird results (e.g. weightless armor providing 2 DR).
>>
>>82437888
Most armor is constructed with Better Fantasy armor. Low-Tech is 'accurate' but close to worthless for a fantasy game.
I typically allow a fallback to basic set armor out of indifference.
Does this mean everyone buys boots and gloves for 2 extremity DR basically for free? Yes.
Do I especially care? No.

Usagi vs Mizuki

Round 1
The fighters move towards each other. Both are holding their weapons 2 handed.

Round 2
Mizuki evaluates
Usagi evaluates
Both step forward.
Initial evaluations are good in 1v1 scenarios

Round 3
Mizuki steps to her right and evaluates
Usagi steps forward and evaluates.

Round 4
Mizuki attempts a 2 handed swing at Usagi with deceptive (-2/-1) with another followup with her extr attack.
Usagi attempts a sideslip dodge to her left, she succeeds. Sideslips are a good defensive option for dodges as they provide +2 (retreat provides +3) without moving away from the enemy. However Usagi also manages to dodge the second one.

Usagi steps forward.
"Usagi destroy tiny fox! Take tiny fox man!"
Usagi All Out Feint and Attacks. She wins with Margin of Victory 2.
Her next attack is a deceptive attack as well.
Mizuki dodge and retreats. She just makes it

Round 5
Mizuki, feeling like she can handle this and that her huge opponent can't last forever, goes for another simple deceptive 2h swing at Usagi.
Usagi tries to dodge, but not fast enough. However, Mizuki misses anyway thanks to getting too tricky for herself with the deceptive.

"Usagi Smash you, then smash husband. In bed!"
Usagi steps forward with an all out (+4) determined deceptive (-6/-3)
Mizuki tries a retreating dodge but the deceptive makes her miss by 1.
MIZUKI ACTIVATES LUCK

Round 6
A marginal escape, Mizuki decides for a stop hit. Waiting for Usagi to come to her.

Usagi steps forward, already picturing Mizuki's handsome husband.
Usagi steps forward intending to disarm. Usagi loses the Stop hit roll, but both successfully defend, so neither hits the other.

Round 7
Mizuki steps to her left and unleashes two attacks in one turn with her Extra attack. Usagi retreats and dodges successfully.

Usagi now lacks the reach to hit Mizuki with a regular attack. She opts to close the distance with a committed attack (determined); this gives her an extra step. She makes it a deceptive (-4/-2) thrust but Mizuki manages to parry the axe's pointy speartip.

Round 8
With the bunnygirl now unable to retreat out of range. Mizuki unleashes 2 deceptive attacks.
Usagi tries dodging but the committed attack means she can't retreat, and she fails both.
She takes 7 and 3 damage and rolls for berserk, she fails by 1.

Usagi screams and unleashes a deceptive (-6/-3) AoA (+4) determined attack.
Mizuki attempts a retreating parry, but fails by with a really terrible roll of 15. She fails by 6; even acrobatic dodge saves her not.
Usagi meanwhile hits, her axe whips up and cleaves down.
24 injury to Mizuki's torso as Usagi's Axe hacks through her ribcage.
Knockdown: Pass
Consciousness: Fail
Death: Pass
Mizuki's eyes go wide as her flesh is parted by the axe and then her eyes roll back. She falls to the ground, blood dripping from the axe that felled her.
Usagi stands over her, her chest heaving with her breaths, she comes to her senses, and blinks her red eyes.
"USAGI BEST!" She shouts. Mizuki isn't about to die but she'll have to rest up a lot.

Analysis: Just don't roll a fucking 15 against a berserker when you have 9HP. Perhaps a defensive attack would have been better. They do less damage while also increasing your defense; this allows one to fight her with less risk of triggering her berserk while protecting oneself. Might be the way to go there.

That might be an idea, maybe I should have had her be more aggressive rather than trying to be defensive and use reach while fishing for failures from Usagi with her attacks. The thing is if she'd failed at that she would have absolutely been deleted too.
>>
>>82443658
So basically, within the constraints of the current number of points, going all in on power and toughness is clearly the best option

I think I'd kinda like to see Usagi vs Marcia. Sword and board has a lot of strong defensive options that aren't just 'survive the hit.'

Also, if this ticks over while I'm asleep and someone posts a new one, I made a thread header image a bit ago.
>>
>>82443988
It'd be nice to see the new fighters, too, like Annabel, Tsuki, and Ocylae. Maybe the 3 of them could fight a big troll or something together?
>>
>>82443976
I don't think so. Usagi's has been quite lucky. Nito almost beat her, remember? I think that if I'd had Mizuki take some risks it could have turned out differently; like if she'd gone for an all out throat slash or something.
Anyone with a long weapon will give her a super hard time. On top of that she hasn't fought any of the Feint 18 fighters. Her defenses aren't actually that high so that Feint different will let them really hurt her. I think she'll lose those.
Maybe it's that I had Mizuki fight too passively with her "fishing for failures" from Usagi as I said here >>82443899
Usagi tends to win on berserk because berserk FORCES risk taking.

I’d like to see the two versions of Annabel fight, with the winner facing Anna.
tournament of the Ann’s, live from /tg/‘s Waifu Arena.
>>
>>82443899
I think this is ironically a case where Mizuki needs to be the 'beatdown', to borrow terminology from that old Magic article. Usagi can take multiple hits and keep going, but Mizuki just gets obliterated by any hit at all. Assuming torso hits:
>Usagi's average injury to Mizuki: 21
>Mizuki's average injury to Usagi: 5.25
>Usagi HP: 16
>Mizuki HP: 9

Actually, now that I've written out the numbers, maybe the defensive play is correct. Neck hits only take the average injury up to 7 at the cost of -5 to hit. That's not even enough to cause a Major Wound to Usagi, so it wouldn't even trigger a stun roll half the time. Looking at the Defensive Attack rules then:
>-2 Damage
>+1 to Parry or Block

Oh. Well, that's still pretty awful for Mizuki. She does 1d+2 cutting with her Katana, -2 from Usagi's DR, and then another -2 if attacking defensively. So, average of 1.5 * 1.5 from cut gives us 2.25. Not sure that the +1 to a defense that isn't even technically her best one is worth taking the TTK up from four seconds to eight.

Starting to think that >>82443976 is right and a waify build like this doesn't work very well. Time to invest in Feint with her defeat points.

No, to avoid copyright problems GCS does not contain much in the way of actual rules. A lot of things are automatically calculated for you, but not everything. She’s yuge mate.
I was going to make her even bigger but I didn’t know how kosher size mods where for this group.
Would it be ok if she was size +1?
>>
>>82445254
>>82445372
also I wasn’t sure how that works exactly.
Special exorcise that is:
> Special Exercise (HP can exceed ST by 100%)
Then I payed 2 cp per hp 15 times, totaling 30 cp spent for 15 hp points (I believe this to be the cost of hp points?)
So 15 + 15 is 30 right?
It seems pretty good so I wouldn’t be surprised if I was wrong somehow in if this is allowed.
>>
Question, do you need dual weapon attack skill for both weapons or just the second one?
>>
>>82445456
Asked my rulesfriend. There's an FAQ somewhere that apparently clarifies this.
You MAY take DWA with a bespoke wepaon pair such as Axe/Sword. But it only works the way you took it. Axe in left hand, sword in right. Sword/Axe, Axe/Axe and Sword/Sword would not function with the tech.
If you paid for DWA sword and DWA axe both, you could use those weapons in any combination that pleased you.
>>
>>82445372
>>82445390
It doesn't make conceptual sense. We're statting characters not bolting whatever stats you feel like to some art. 30 HP is more than a fucking heavy warhorse or Oxen, both of whom are SM+2. She's 6'3". Well within human bounds. So she can't be SM+1. She's 125kg, but she has more HP than an Oxen, which weighs over a metric ton! what the fuck is she made of? What's the logic here? What special exercise does she do that makes her so tough?

>>82445456
No BUT if if you do something like Sword/Axe then the axe must always be in your offhand and the sword in your primary hand and you cannot do Sword/Sword or Axe/Axe; you're restricted to the specific combo you took. Don't forget the Offhand weapon training perk
>>
>>82445486
>She's 6'3". Well within human bounds.
Like I said I wanted to make her bigger, but I didn’t know if size modifiers were kosher size 1 not 2 though.
As far as I can tell human PC height & weight can’t be tabulated the same way as creatures by hp&st, so it’s very possible for a size mod +1 charcter to be at 30 hp
>Bolted on
Wdym? She’s literally standing alone without any unique objects to compare to, there’s no way for you to dictate her size, it’s pure fantasy.

NTA; Size doesn't grant strength or HP, it imposes a minimum floor requirement. HP remains conceptually shackled to body mass as represented by ST.
To have HP +30% your ST implies you are the bulkiest realistic imaginable dude. A strongfat competitive slapboxer looking motherfucker.
To have +100% HP implies something crazy is going on. You're one of those martial arts films guys who's weaponized fat until he's invincible, you have a non-human body plan entirely, or you're just straight up magic.

She’s not human: she’s an Ojou San.
More seriously, she’s a genetic freak from a very specific noble family. This is fight club not campaign, so it won’t matter, but they would be known for martial belligerence, paired with actual disciplined ability.
She’s the black sheep, only reason she’s participating in a common fight club at all, but she still has an interest and ability in war, & so trains appropriately in the family secrets.

Disappointing that we're using Basic armor and BFA, but that's just another growing pain, just like Bulletproof Nudity and people putting over 16 in Secondary Attributes as if they're not Attributes.

For my next project, I wonder whether to try breaking something or if I should just make another meme glass-canon character?
