Yeah, as cool as the top of a gigantic Eiffel Tower jutting out of a sea of cloud sound, I think having such a huge part of the underground being "open air" kind of defeat the point of Paris sinking into a cave. I think just having the Eiffel Tower be a bigger version of itself raising up to the ceilling where it connect with a giant elevator digged all the way to the surface work better.
To me, it would be kinda like a napkin stretch over a table, then a hole open in the middle of the table, the center of the napkin start falling inside and is cut when the table "contract" itself. So now you have napkin that folded up and the center piece below.

God I sound like a schyzo

Also what's with your obsession with black powder despite the zulu wars and boer wars having both sides use catridge related weapons. Literally no one was using muskets by the time of actual colonization except some arab africans in the middle of the desert. Mid-1860 saw muskets almost entirely phased out with breech-loaders and by the 1870s.

>Abolitionist Elite Infantry
>Grizzled as hell from the Indian Wars/Civil war
>Stupid high Morale saves
>Springfield rifles hurt like a bitch
>Gain Bonus damage to cave beasts
>Probably one of the few units that keep Abolitionists Viable

>>88575942
To me, you and your opponent would each place one terrain layer, and then the third would be randomly picked
They could be stuff like
>Fortified settlement
>Cave river
>Fungal Forest
>Ancient ruins
>Tectonic Hotzone
>Gas Corridors
>Metal veins
>Crystal formations
Honestly a good place to start would be looking at IRL caves and seeing what types of environments happen there
>>
>>88576036
>To me, you and your opponent would each place one terrain layer, and then the third would be randomly picked
I agree. That sounds like a great way to balance things and still hold interest.
Perhaps an objective on each of the player's chosen tiles, to incentivize the enemy trying to breach enemy-advantageous territory?
>>
>>88576145
I'd say each faction gets a table to roll on for their objectives
With some having larger tables than others to make predicting them harder

>La Ombre only has two objectives
>Ascension, get the majority of your army to the highest possible tile
>Destruction, Kill as many enemies as possible

While someone like the Ottomans could have things like
>The Walls must hold: Keep enemies off your home terrain
>Suliman's revenge, capture a river island tile
>The Dead walk again: Ressurect units in your army a total of x amount of times.

With the bigger, more diverse factions getting larger lists to roll on, which makes them harder to predict, but also means it's harder to 'spec' into one specific thing
>>
>>88576213
Possible each faction has a "Defensive" objective ("Protect the McGuffin") and an offensive one?
Would mix up tactical situations.

All great ideas. Now lets just create a prototype. Something were we can playtest. Make it just one layer for now and flesh out some factions a it more. From the Unit dock the only fleshed out ones are the brits (kinda) Ottomans, and there is a shit ton of Balkan Mercenaries for some reason?
>How big should the board be?
>How will terrain work? Any obsticles?
>How will cover work? How many types of Cover?
>How will the symbols for all that stuff look on the tiles?
>How will inter layers transit work?
The objectives for now can just be destruction, or capture the flag + King of the hill. Scoring points, nothing special, just to game test.
>also who would Moral or Will checks be rolled?
When taking casualties ok... what else?
Also people go and submit your ideas to the rule book and the Unit sheet

>Half-cover and bonus to your armor and all kinds of stuff like that
Maybe and forgive me for the double sin of mentioning both vidya and newcom have a system like in newcom games of no-cover, half-cover and full-cover? Except instead of to-hit modifier, cover gives a pretty big flat armor bonus?
If we assume a normal rifle deals 1d10 or 1d6+3 damage that's 30% and 33% respectively of a one-shot-kill without cover. If we give half-cover an armor bonus of 5 + whatever is needed to counterract the AP value, it makes our infantry take less than 4 damage ~85% of the time. Full cover would instead give a bonus 15-20 armor making it impossible to wound with normal weapons
This would also allow for big guns with big AP values, like cannons, to completely obliterrate both the full cover and the poor chap hiding behind it

Also makes it is easy to mark on hex maps - just put an overlay of a half-filled shield for half-cover and full shield for full-cover

I'll add this to the dock tomorrow if anons support this

>France enter Restoration, King is back.
>After a few years, Paris and part of northen France collapse into the ground, dramaticly altering geography as the rest of the land contract to fill the space
>Part of Doggerland are litteraly dragged out of the sea, uncovering traces of ancient civ (beccause why not)
>British seize some ground, trying to understand what's happening and profit from the chaos
>Eventually, Paris make contact with the surface, lead to a revolution above, Republic established, they reclaim sovereignty of their lands
>British invade Iceland to gain an way to the depth
>Meanwhile French Republic build the great Eiffell tower to link Under-Paris and Orlean, new center of power on the surface
>>
I know undead are ottos theme, but i think that while the under-paris is french hub in underlayer, they cant actualy proced from it straight down, because the paris catacombs are now almost as hazardous as some of the deepest layers.

Well better then what I had in mind. I support it. Maybe the Armor and AP system should be overhauled too? I think it was meant to be like 1 armor = something thicc or leather. 2 = construction helmets and that kind of stuff (even tho it didn't exist) 3 = half plate? 4 = conquistador styl armor and 5 = full plate. Stuff above being some uber armor like titanium or some shit. I dont know the penetration of those calibres but they would probably pirce all of that with ease. So I guess we could keep the curent armor system. what do other anons think?

As for the Ottoman necromancer, his hands are tied. He has to get his own country under control. Paris at least had more time to adapt. And he wouldn't really be helping the dead. The German Confederacy was not completely unified or industrialized. It was a baby Germany, but still had ambitions to become a world power.
>if the Danes were a relevant military power at this time would they really just let the Brits invade? And not resist or ask any questions?
I'd assume there'd be a war. Those do tend to happen from time to time.

>>88578294
Occultism was popular in France at the time (and would be for years) so that fit. I think there is a great pride in being "civilisation" (as european, last of all the French, would not regard other peoples of the third layer as real civilisation) surviving in the depth. Also parisian cop/military patrolling the streets of the less savory neighbourhoods to put down whatever the dumbass playing cultist released this week.

The City of Lights shine brightly even below.
>>
>>88578294
>Just cuz the have fallen doesn't mean they have to deal with necromancy
Thats true, but this idea wasn't inflenced by it just being fallen. Rather, there are largest catacombs on earth under paris, that (to my knowledge) even now are not fully mapped. In my opinion it kinda writes itself that something would happen there.
>And he wouldn't really be helping the dead. As Necromancy is naturally evil.
Thats true, but i meant it as more of "he knows how they work, he can destroy them"
>>
>>88578381
Occultism was popular in general. It was a way to deal with a lot of the trauma at the time, from war or disease. Scammers would photoshop loved ones as ghosts and shit. Pretty awful, but at the time it gave comfort.
>>
>>88578402
They are now mostly mapped out, but not everything is recent, there is entire sector that are too dangerous to access. There is reason they put solid safeguard in the visit, if you get lost in there and they don't know where you went/from where you entered, it's possible they never find you.

Talking about catacomb and Paris, a few years ago the cops found a private lounge there, complete with a bar and a cinema, apparently this belonged to a secret society. Litteraly went back to the place once the cops left (after putting barrier in place), took some stuff and left a "Don't seek us" note.
>>
>>88578402
Something happened in the catacombs that probably caused Paris to fall to be honest.

>Be a bit more occulty.
OK, metaphisicaly sinking of paris was recreation of masonic initiation rites on greatest scale posible. Because of this streets of Paris are semi sentient. Where one day there are streets, next day can be buildings. When you look back you can see you are in back alley etc. But no matter what the city always creates sense of scenic beauty, and place that are more used are more grounded.
And so politicians and poets stil meet at coffe shops, and men from all of Europe come and visit still beating heart of culture

PROPOSAL FOR PLAYMAPS

Each player gets to design their own playmap. Their own personal playmap will be a white sheet, map or whatever they opt to use of the official dimensions we decide on.

They get to draw on said map, with the following colours.
>Red
Full cover. Terrain from roof to ceiling, high wall etc.

>Yellow
Half cover. Short walls, outcrops etc.

>Blue
Trenches.

These would be very easy to set up as you just unfold/unroll your playmat and you're good to go. (Can bring custom obstacles too, to fit, if you want.)
Possible rules as to the legal layouts. Like, a red obstacle can't stretch from border to border for example.
Thought to get the ball rolling.

Ok but they should do this on a hex grid.
Im unsure about tranches to be honest. Since this will be played mostly online in 2d so checking LOS for holes and different terrain will be a pain.
If we want to do different heights we can maybe do z coordinates and shadow rule?
Shadow rules tlrd; if you are in the objects shadow you cant hit the top of it. So if something it 3 layers tall. you cant hit the unit on top if you are 3 hexes or closer to the edge. idk getting the ball rolling Im not rally happy with how this sounds.

I honestly like a hex grid idea, saves a lot of trouble.

>Played on a 1-inch hexgrid (Steal some Battletech mechanics perhaps?)
>Each player brings their own hexgrid, which they colour to their own tactical desires.
>Red tiles are full cover, yellows are partial cover, green is difficult terrain?

>Personal tilemap rules:
>Must contain a SINGLE area of contiguous, uncoloured tiles. That is, you can't create a tilemap with two or more areas entirely cut apart by red coloured tiles. The 'regular' regions must be connected.
>Uncoloured region must contain at least ???? number of tiles.

LARGE, MAIN BATTLEMAP
Each player takes turns placing hazards obstacles on the main map, before deploying troops on their personal map maybe?

Then, of course, the TYPE of map (global modifiers based on area type?) is chosen by each player for their personal, and randomly selected for the large main one?

>Each player brings one of pic related or similar, which they colour/paint however they want according to the rules of tilemaps.

Heres some shit I created. I hate it but here it is.
>4 player map, Red, Bule, Yellow and Green start from the colored positions. Thats their spawn, this wousnt mean they are limited to bringing only 7 units.
>Everyone starts with 100Pts (points to make their army/squad with)
>Dark Gray is rock and can be dug trough. They have 3 Constitution. every time you dig up a rock roll a d10, on 10s you score 1 WP. You find aa rock or something idk.
>Light Grays are rough terrain. its costs 2 Sped to move over these. If you end your turn on one it will cost you one speed to get off it.
>Black is ravine. You can cross it unless you construct a bridge. To construct a bridge 1 tile long it will cost you 4 Construction.
>Light drovn or like sand brown is light cover it has orientation. if a unit is in a hex that has light cover on its borders it gets +5 to armor
>Dark brown is same shit as light just its heavy cover. Units get +10 to armor.
Some units start with weapons. If you want to give them a new weapon or a tool you need to buy it separately from to equipment section.
Thats all for now I guess. We can maybe move on to /quest if ther are interested people, after we make our armies. Try to keep some theme but there are no hard rules so lets just go for it.
Also lets say that units can go trough friendly units.
>If you wanve more then one worker working on something, only one needs to be adjacent to the tile he is working on. Others have to be adjacent to him for their stats to account too. they don't have to be adjacent to the. E.g. 2 workers are in a narrow tunnel one behind another their dig rate will be combined. Since therese only one worker class in the document that would be 4 for 2 of them, not counting any tools on top.
>>
>>88583541
Oh yes and dimond ores have 6 Constitution and give 2 WPs every time they are mined. You can mine them infinetly. First to lets say 30 WP is the winner or the last one standing. You also get points for Killing enemies.
Upon board wiping a faction everyone gets 5 WPs
>>
>>88583541
Seems like we're agreed on hexmap over either gridmap or open movement. That's a design element solidified.
>Rock features, ravines (down to lower level?)
Also reasonable.

>Difficult terrain
Also something we seem to be settling on. There will be difficult terrain in the end product
I hereby RATIFY difficult terrain.

How about for every 5pts unspent in squad creation you get 1WP?

Here is some shit I came up with, if you dont wanna create your own army you can use this.
>Classic British Expedition:
>2 Hired Hand with Hammers and Shovels (they can have/use both right?) thats 30pts
>Sergeant Major 30pts
>4 British Army Privates

>Husked Hored
>20 Husked Ottomans thats 100pts

>Ottoman Combat Patrol
>Ottoman Necromancer 30pts
>2 Husked Janissaries that is 40pts
>6 Husked Ottomans thats 30pts

>Confused Fallen Bundle
>2 Old Serbian Revolutionaries 30pts
>Confused Serbian Artillery 30pts
>2 Survivors of The Fall thats 30pts (I can use them right? Didint someone say thay could be used as merks? Anyhow I find it funny)

Also that would be balanced in this scenarion as all 100pts would equal 20VP? So I guess if you can score 10VP with no units more power to you. Wait, are troops individuals and not squads ? I though it was gonna be skirmish, smaller than Warhammer but still have squads ; something legion sized.

Victory points don't sound schizo enough.

What if we implemented some Go-like mechanic of 'Territories' where you get points for the number of hexes that your army 'Controls', as determined by borders created around where your units are located.
>>
>>88583662
Suggest that to the map and layer builders. I can see that working as a scale.
>points to spend on terrain
Idk how I would balance that. Would be interesting I wound lie. But then maps would have to be more simple. which inst really a bad thing. But then again you ave worker units for a reason so idk Maybe they can create hard and or soft cover out of stone they mine?
>>
>>88583681

PSA on state of colonial factions, Austria-Hungary is still sitting at one unit and Russia, I mean, the Tsarists are now behind in terms of roster.

L’ombre aka Napoleon’s faction I would expect we can also fill in when there is a thread about the underground factions actually, since he’s one part soldiers and one part monsters of the deep.

Slight rant: Officials in the Qing Court see that the collapse of their nation is imminent, have no allies left on the surface, so are in deep with talks about allowing themselves to be a military staging ground for the Mu, if the Mu’s militant might can stabilize the nation by force. Thoughts?

Its "La Ombre" and the original chart has Napoleon listed as stealing other factions' units, so they don't need many units of their own.

But we need to either make them a minor but lore heavy faction or change their playstyle a bit from the ottomans. Maybe like Elite Undead units? That keep reanimating are hard to put down for good?

"First we get wake up by the primitives that call them selves French. We kicked them out of out crypts and went back to sleep as it was not out time yet. But now we wake one again, our people asking us for help. Our old was, our Religion, our Couture, all but gone. And to see that those who think they can rule us took out knowledge of Necromancy (or what ever we are going to call it in this setting) and started to whiled it as if they mastered it... Well, there is gonna be a pretty sizable hole in northern France. Could be that the brits take advantage of the chaos after the fall of Paris to send some explorers down. >No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.

Underground.

>>88573764
Shot in the Dark
There was nothing on the dining car that I wanted. By the next morning there would be nothing on the whole train that I wanted. For now, my only desire was to walk and look at the world above ground. I had spent too long underground and had begun to feel the nothingness again. My cabin on the Orient Express to Calais has been my only environment for many days now. Man shouldn't merely exist in the world the way a dog does. Looking, never seeing. Moving, never progressing. I entered the dining car and regained a small bit of myself by indulging in my traditional British sensabilities of appreciating sensable decoration and then appreciating the women. Ah, but I'll describe the decoration first, for my morals demand that I must settle the business before the pleasure.
>>
>>88604684
Nobody could miss the jade green color that dominated the dining car's tasteful furniture. Egg-shaped and prominant, it was the ultimate, and final, statement in eastern decoration. I loved that the color didn't blind the observer the way opal or pearl colored decoration did. Jade green was stuck on the backs and seats of chair cushions and cast over the table in a cloth, as well. The cutlery, tastefully cradled in a jade colored napkin. The dinner candles jutted with the forgein beauty of its color, only a few of them were shakily lit in this late hour of my habitual wanderings. It contrasted in perfection with the fine, red-hued laquored wood that dominated the walls, chairs and tables in that regal seating arrangement. The tables were secured quite handily to the wall and the chairs operated on rails, that could be twisted down with a crank to secure them steady in case of unsteady winds. I had learned they also did wonders for the posture. Lanterns of brass hung on the walls, with modern light bulbs illuminating our charmingly human affairs. I felt the beauty radiate from that light, reach its apex at the steady length of its illumination and, before it could fade to darkness and cloud my thoughts with

unpleasant recollections

meet the curvature from the light emmanating from the next light bulb. Inbetween those many lights was all the delights of civilzation and the civilized to eat in peace. To speak in peace. To enjoy the company of companions, loved ones, just existing in light. I see one passenger stop cutting his steak to chuckle at some comment from his companion. Now I observe a passenger holding a spoon correctly and supping something from it, she looks out the window at the darkness. I could not have felt safer. Now, dear friends, quickly. To the women, I say.
>>
>>88604699
The first two will be described for completeness, they were with their husbands and both were fatter than Shah of Iran. Their clothes were just modest and their hair the same. I felt no animal betrayals of my morals at their observation and neither should you.

The third was a fabulous beauty of eastern complexion and dress. I'm unsure how many dresses it is tasteful for a lady to travel with, but this woman certainly had the finest to match the decor, light red accents on a robe of jade color, with a cloth covering her hair in the same color as the later. The strand of dark hair that had fallen into her eyes would make a lesser man fall in love. It was straight in every place it was exposed. She was reading a newspaper in a language I didn't know, likely Arabic. Her eyes curved like the blade of a sword and her mouth was the pink color of Turkish delights. I smirked at my own observation, for indeed, she seemed to be a Turk. At least, she had the look of her husband, who certainly was Turkish, if that fez-hat and moustache was anything to go by. He wore an ascot in the same scarlet as his fez-hat. He was the most disappointing part of her, entirely. Then I look to the woman sitting at the table in front of her.

Finally, now. There was a girl,
she travelled alone. Her dress was pink.
Looking at her, it made me think.
her wavy hair, had just one curl.
I looked again, and my eyes sought,
on her left cheek, a beauty spot.
Dazy gaze, a simple thing.
On her hand, there was a ring.
On the right, a little pearl.
That's all I saw, about the girl.

Her eyes meet mine and I regain myself. I approach and say, "Bonjour, mademoiselle. Je m'appelle Conrad Fennington Beauchamp. Est ce que l’on pourrait dîner ensemble?"

"Oui, en fait. Mes dîners sont soliteres dans ce train. Viens-tu de Paris?

"Non, London."

"Oh, you're an Englishman." Her english was quite German but her French accent was perfect. I guessed she was Austrian but kept that to myself.
>>
>>88604717
"I share the citizenship of my father, my mother was from Belgium. Do you prefer English?"

"It is the language I am currently mastering, so your company will provide both excellent practice and an abatement to my loneliness. Garçon! Allez, s'il vous plait! What wine do you drink?"

"Montez-Blanc. What food do you eat?"

"The cooked kind. The doctor says my appetite could rival the steam engine for consumption."

"Madam, your appearance is evidence of the total opposite."

"You, I like. I suspect I shall not regret accepting your invitation to dinner."

So we talked. The conversation was lovely, sometimes clever, and I learned a great deal about this lovely woman. Her name was Elizabeth Heilig-Shultz he was the beloved nurse maiden of a young master-of-the-house to an Austrian noble family. She was on the Orient Express, with me now, travelling from Istanbul, like me, to London, to finally see the capitol of the British empire. She travelled at the expense of her young master, who had only recently inherited his estate. This long vacation of hers was considered a reward for some action she had performed in her duty that she would not clarify to me, but she seemed quite proud of herself for it. I don't like to pry, so I didn't. As for me, I could only avoid speaking of my reason for being on this train for so long.
>>
>>88604730
"I'm travelling from the front in the Sino-Japanese conflict. Istanbul was merely the closest port of call and now, thank God, I can return to London." My comment illicited a serious look from her. "You are a mercenary, Herr Beauchamp?"

I chuckle, trying not to sound rude. My recent adventures had given me a rough look, including many scratches on my face and a black eye that was healing well.

"I'm a fellow at the historical research division of Cambridge college. I'm a medicinal psychologist by trade."

"What?"

"I'm a doctor, sort of. A psychologist at Cambridge university."

"You did not answer my question."

"Never. Especially after meeting several of them."

"Is Oxford a school of medicine, Herr Beauchamp?" I was grateful she changed the subject.

"It's not, though I wish to God it was."

"How do you fit into their curriculum, exactly?"

"Exactly?" I paused. Be careful, Beauchamp. "The study of Lemurian artefacts is my specialty." This statement changed her demeanor. I will always love the look of sudden interest from a pretty woman, especially Ms. Heilig-Shultz when she said, "Ooh! I've only heard of the most horrible ones that come out of Fallen Paris, but I know they're finding them all over now! Isn't that exciting?" She gasps, placing her right hand with the neat pearl ring in front of her mouth. "Have you made some new discovery in the far east?"
>>
>>88604742
"I don't dig them up, madam. I simply observe them." She watched me with interest and I felt a silent, 'well, come out with it!' coming out of her eyes. "I've told you that I'm a psychologist, yes? I was given permission to observe the use of these artefacts in the theatre of war. Their use on human beings. I recorded their abnormal psychological effects for scientific study."

Now, don't think me a cad for saying these things, but Ms. Heilig-Shultz was really very pretty and I had been throughly exhausted from my journey of the past several months. A long journey to the orient, linking up with Chinese forces, watching them get annihilated by the Japanese, it was all very tiring. I should have been using my eyes and my ears, not my lips. I was not worried for foreign spies stealing my notes on the psychological side effects of use of the 'lead spiggot' artefacts. They were not unusual in the theatre of war in these times and used to enhance a fighting unit's ballistic output. What I *was* worried about was the discovery of two Lemurian 'mummy tongue' artefacts I took to smuggling in my luggage. The private trade of any Lemurian, Muuan or Atlantean artefacts were highly illegal, whatever customs office discovered them could expect a fat bounty posted by almost every major government in the world for the recovery of these items. It didn't matter that one of them was going to legitimate study in Oxford university, a common cabin thief could retire at age three with a few 'mummy tongues' under his belt. One would suit me just fine.

"That's amazing, Herr Beauchamp. You were at these battles, then? Between the Asians?" I nodded. "Did you fear for your life?" I nodded. "Surely you did not have time to record your notes and fight a pitched battle, sir."

"I admit that I could not multitask as you say. I recorded the notes after our defeat. Everything of interest happened after our defeat."
>>
>>88604755
"At least you escaped with your life, Herr Beauchamp. How did you survive?"

"My feet, a fast boat, then my feet again."

"Oh, you brave soul. Fighting those yellow hordes must have been horrible. Where did the action happen?"

"Lüshunkou. I mean, Port Arthur." We had just finished our dessert course and were enjoying a casual amount of libation. My share of the vine was greater than hers and I had begun to feel it, candidly.

"Ms. Heilig-Shultz, the fruit of the vine has begun to affect my awareness. I feel the call of Morpheous."

"As do I, Herr Beauchamp. I am so sorry that my trip is coming to a close tomorrow, Strasbourg is my destination. Why have I not seen you in the dinner car in these past days if you were coming from Istanbul, like me?"

"My constitution has disallowed it, ma'am. As you can see from my face I took some damage during combat. I've ordered my food sent to my personal cabin."

"Car 3?"

"Why, yes! How did you know?"

"A lucky guess." Her giggle made me see a few new colors. "Your cabin is only two down from mine and I thought I saw you from the open hallway a few days ago, in passing. I'm slightly shocked at the late hour, Mr. Beauchamp. Had I elected to travel with an escort he would find our late conversation to warrant intervention."

"I shant worry to offend a fictional chaparone if you don't." I sup my wine. "The only other passengers enjoying their conversation that yet remain in the dining cart are those Turks behind us."

"I shant worry to offend them, either." She lowers her voice and leans towards me. "I do so distrust the Turkish people, Mr. Beauchamp. I shall never feel safe around them."

"I have a similar sentiment. The Express solely considers their money, it seems."

"Then I shall imagine that nation funding our fine dinner tonight. To Constantinople!" She raised her glass.

"To Constantinople." Our toast was pleasant. If the Turks heard us, their quiet conversation was uninterrupted.
>>
>>88604772
"May I see you off tomorrow, Ms. Heilig-Shultz?"

"I've enjoyed our conversation immensely, Mr. Beauchamp. Yes, you may escort me about the train station until your schedule sees you depart. You may meet my aquaintence, Hans, a butler to my master. He's scehdeuled to pick me when I arrive."

"I suspect he shall not share your conversational capacity."

"What?"

"He won't be as pleasant to speak with as you are."

She giggled again. God, save that giggle and the empire. "You never know, Mr. Beauchamp."

"May I escort you to your room?"

"That *is* bold, Conrad. I'll see you tomorrow morning."

"Good-night, Ms. Heilig-Shultz."

"À bientôt, Mr. Beauchamp."

Watching her go made my mouth bitter. With no coffee to trick myself I just let the bile form in my stomach. Had I said an inappropriate thing? No. No, certainly not. She said she would see me tomorrow morning and had not recended my invitation to escort her. My stopwatch read slightly after midnight and I was startled that one of the employees hadn't schoo'd us off. I waited five minutes and departed for my cabin. All I left behind were the dishes and the Turks.

I returned to my cabin and went through my mental inventory. My clothes and affects were in the overhead luggage compartment, safe and secure. I insist that my luggage be no higher than my waist. Thought my luggage frequently got curious looks, I could tell none of the people looking have had to march through wilderness with *their* luggage. Nobody had been into my belongings or even my room. Toiletries were secure. I had one remaining can of my prefered brand of Handsome Rick's shaving creame remaining. That would have to change soon. It was the only brand that allowed me to shave an injured face in relative comfort. Checked the hallway right, nothing. Check the hallway left, notice Ms. Elizabeth Heilig-Shultz's cabin. Lights are out. With the door closed behind me and the business concluded, let us get to the pleasure.
>>
>>88604789
From my coat I withdrew my Gasser M1870 pistol. The chambers were opened individually to verify the integrity of the ammunition. The 11.3x36mmR calibur ammunition kills what it hits. It was placed under my pillow, pointing perpendicular to the train tracks. A quick check verified the mummy tongues were safe. I looked about the cabin. I threw open my curtains and looked into the darkness for only a moment before closing them again. I was quite out of things to do and so had to confront the spectre of sleep again. It is not one of my favorite activities. I dress for bed and lay down. I make a habit of not looking at my watch when trying to sleep. The time is totally unknown to me when a gentle scratching comes from my cabin door with the softness of a meowing kitten. A man would have to be asleep in order to have it interrupted. So I wouldn't say that my sleep was interrupted. Ah, my *struggle* was interrupted. That seems appropriate.

My robe is thrown about my person and one Conrad Fennington Beauchamp was walking towards his cabin door. Thinking back on this incident now, my actions made little sense at the time.

Perhaps I had been asleep for less than an hour and so did not realize my ridiculous actions. Nor did I fully realize the sleep-addled mind that, even now, was reasoning against me. You see, for some reason I thought Elizabeth Heilig-Shultz was at my door and needed to see me urgently. I had no evidence for this, perhaps some dream had left its illogical rationality upon my waking mind. When I threw open my door I was smuggling contraband, fleeing a warzone, haunted by things from the underearth, thoroughly sleep deprived and, my least favorite state of being, completely unarmed. My intruder was more shocked than I was. The sound of a metal resistance in my sliding cabin door; I only thought later it was probably lockpicking tools still jammed into my cabin lock.
>>
>>88604807
The lock and door mechanisms were lovingly smooth and offered almost no resistance, which is why it was unusual. Despite my initial advantage, it was wasted when the Turk acted first. He grabbed my right arm with his left hand and produced a two-shot .22 calibur pistol with his right hand. It's a fine weapon for assassination, the .22 calibur makes almost no noise when discharged. He gently placed it to my throat and said: "Don't scream, Mr. Beauchamp. Put your hands in-" I never discovered where he desired my hands to be.

It is common for an assaulter to extend his arms too far from his body, like a duelling sword. Yet, anatomy teaches us that the center of strength comes from the core of one's torso. The man's mistake came from when he pressed his pistol into my neck and began to step forwards. He had created too much momentum towards me with the thought of overwhelming me with implied action, primarily the pistol. Yet, one must always guard ones actions from counter-action. His weight was moving towards me, and my head was forced backward from the press of his pistol on my neck. My head was already reared back, and his, moving into position. His left arm was also all wrong, I pulled him towards me in the same instant I drove my head forward with all the force that nature could give an animal who is locked in sudden death with no retreat. I could feel his right arm on the left side of my neck when my forehead connected with his once handsome, now ruined, nose. I wasn't sure how far he had pushed me back into my room, but he flailed little as he stumbled backwards.
>>
>>88604824
The fine red laquored wood of the dining area extended to cabin 3, my cabin hallway's decorations. The Orient Express had thought of almost every amenity for its passengers, and a helpful hand rail had been placed upon the opposite end of the cabins in order to ease the walks of the elderly and infirm. It was upon this tasteful railing that the Turk stumbled into backwards. His head fell almost directly on one of the brass fittings that held together the wooden rails. When he struck that railing there was no sound of wet, tissue, bone, cries, gurgle, snapping, or any of the other sounds I tried to forget. A simple *tiiiiing* was emitted by the brass knob. He slumped down the wall, his head bent much too far forward. His guilty gaze fell to the carpet, unblinking.

I am completely sober now. Checked right down the hallway, nothing. Checked left down the hallway, a light is on in a cabin. One, two down from my own. Ms. Elizabeth Heilig-Shultz's cabin. I grab the Turk by the ankles and drag him into my cabin, where his presence makes moving about quite difficult. I slide the door shut and feel the metal resistance again, opening the door quickly to remove the tool from my lock, I shut it again. Only now do I notice that the Turk has changed into some black colored apparell. I search for the pistol and only panicked for a moment before finding it in the hallway. It's new, shining steel and small enough to fit in the palm of a man's hand. I put it in the pocket of my nightrobe. The Turk had not bled excessively, thank God. Still, I laid several towels under the back of his head as the life was pouring from his nose. During my work I rub my forehead and notice blood on the back of my hand. A quick check with my mirror reveals I am bleeding from my forehead. Another towel pressed to stop the bleeding and I see it is a nasty cut, likely from one of the Turk's teeth. Once the bleedings have stopped, I quickly exit my cabin door and lock it.
>>
>>88604840
As I'm moving to the cabin of Elizabeth I think that I did not check the Turk's pulse. He may still be alive. No time, no time.

I open Elizabeth's cabin with no effort, it's unlocked. Elizabeth herself is laid across her bed with her face towards the bottomless night from the window. Below her is a woman moving about in the wooden drawers of her nightstand. The Turk's wife hears me but does not turn. She says something in a language I don't know. I notice the smell of a nice perfume, will never forget the smell in my life. Stepping in, I close the door behind me. She says something again but first she hears a small click from behind her and turns. I'm thankful the second bullet from her husband's pistol does not misfire and caught her in the left temple as she was turning to me. I don't know if she registered my face or not, but it was terrible for me to see such beauty with a hole in it. A quick check of Elizabeth reveals two identical holes, one in her forehead, one in the scalp. The Turk's wife has a pistol similar to her husband's, with two spent bullet casings in it. I don't notice anything anymore because I was inside of my head, thinking. Desperately.

How to explain three bodies to the authorities?
You can't, old boy. You'll be executed by firing squad.

I'll say I found Turkish spies. It might be true.
You can't prove it. Do you want to roll the bones that they were really spies? Place your bets! The wager is your life.

Dump them off the train. Through the windows.
They'll be found eventually. Then will come the questions to staff and passengers. 'Oh, who did you see the victim talking to? Describe him. Gray hair? Facial injuries? Let's check the passenger logs.'

Shoot the conductor, stop the train, jump off and make for Kolkata.
Do try to be serious, Conrad. Say, what about the tongues?

No.
...

I can't. They've never been used on a person before.
Yes, they have. Nobody remembers, but they were. Once upon a time. In Lemuria.

We only have the inscriptions to go by. Could unleash something *else* on the world.
Well its either that or the firing squad, old bean.

It was hair-raising to transport a dead man by the shoulders from my room into Elizabeth's. Taking the mummy tongue from my pocket felt like handling explosives. It was a small thing, a rock with etchings in it. The language is a different shade of blue every time someone observes it, with each new perception bringing a new hue to the eye. One of the guides made the mistake of looking at it too much. Just blinking at the stone, staring at it. Thousands of times. A look of absolute wonder on his face as his superior officer blew his head off to retrieve it. I make sure not to look at the stone as I place it under Ms. Elizabeth Heilig-Shultz's dead tongue and closed her mouth. Send a silent apology to her spirit, a silent prayer to God. A quick return to my cabin with not a soul in sight. I cleaned what little blood was on my carpet, dumping the soiled towels out of my window. I went to the cabin with the bodies in it to grab the towels there and replace my own, so as not to arouse suspicion.
>>
>>88604870
Re-entering that room, the tongue in place. Waiting for a moment of horror. All of them.

Unmoving.

It might have been the most terrible visit of my life. My Gasser pistol, nor my eyes, left my cabin door for the remainder of the night. Thinking I heard something was the worst part.

When the morning light came I almost went to the dinner car without getting dressed. I nodded to a few of the passengers who were about their morning routines, hoping they didn't notice my eyes flittering like bird's wings. Looking for something I didn't know or might have already happened. Noticed another lockpick tool on the ground near my cabin door, that disembarked via the window about three seconds later. I had an injured face yesterday so nobody lingers on my new forehead. I wander the train, leaving the dinner car for last. The other cabins are ok. Nobody is screaming. Nobody is panicked. No vacant stares, emergency stops, questioning employees, horrors from the deep earth or other...signs. I wander car 3 until nobody is in the hallway then I stop to knock on Elizabeth's door. No sound. I decide to move to the dinner car.

The people are at their breakfasts. Here, a woman quiets her whining infant. There, a portly gentleman samples something with goose eggs in it. He does this while speaking to his wife and gets a little on his chin, laughing about the misstep. A group of four young men lean close to each other, conversing quietly. Everywhere are the people at their normal lives. I should have liked to join them, actually. Stark dread brings about a hungry belly. Where to sit?
>>
>>88604889
"Bonjour, Monsoir Beauchamp. Comment allez-vous?"
>>
>>88604912
At my left elbow, sitting. She is close enough to bite me. Dines alone. Nice smile. Two beauty marks. Perfume. Silent scream. "Good morning."

"Won't you join me for breakfast?"

"Yes." I sit opposite her. Aware that my shaking hand might set off the Gasser in my coat pocket if I can't control it. I hoped I was pointing it at her belly from under the table.

"Did you sleep well?"

"Oh, yes. Et toi?" I'm not picking my words anymore.

"Moi aussi. We may have fallen into the arms of Morpheus, but he saw fit to give me no dreams, good or bad."

"Good."

"It's more neutral. Are you well, Mr. Beauchamp? Oh, your forehead! I don't remember that one, how did it happen?" The tip of her blue tongue brushes her lips. "It looks fresh."

"I'm fine, thank you. The scratch was embarrasing so I- I used makeup to cover it. Would you like breakfast?"

"I'm not hungry." She leans towards me. "Our late dinner filled me up. Are you sure you're well?"

"I'm just. I'm sad that you're leaving. Your stop is soon."

"Ah! Yes it is, but I wanted to talk with you about that. Come, escort me to my room, sir and I'll leave no mystery for my new idea."

Oh, we got up together. Oh, why did I offer my arm to her?
>>
>>88604924
She explains as we side-step through the growing crowd of the dining car: "My tour promises to be along one and I hope I would never impose upon you, but I must admit I had the most marvelous thought about you last night. Would you, if you're not opposed to the idea, would you escort me on a tour of England? Now, I don't want you thinking the Austrians are a forward people or that we lack propriety, but I so enjoyed our time together last night I just thought, 'well, why not?' I have about ten more months left to go on my tour to spend anywhere I wish before I am due to return to my duties in the house of my master. My expenses are chiefly food, all other matters can be handled by my allowance. You've just come back from a war so the university might let you take a small vacation, eh? Why not travel with me for a while? You can show me the country of your father and I can show you the wonders of Austria, if you've never been. Even if you had, you'll find I'm a far superior guide than any of your previous aquantances. I hope I'm not rushing us into anything and I respect the distance of our sexes. You may call me Elizabeth by the way, but only privately. You seem like a terribly interesting man and, well honestly, I've had such an awful time in Istanbul with a mere escort that I would much prefer to adventure with a man of your...experience."

She opens the door to her cabin and the nothing I see terrifies me. No Turks. No clothes. No blood. "I'm sorry, am I being too forward, Mr. Beauchamp?"
>>
>>88604933
All color has left my life since I went beneath the Earth. How would the surface be any different? "Not at all. Also, please, call me Conrad."

Can we get this in a doc linked in the 'Recommended reading' section of the main doc or something?
>>
With Colonials done, let's do a non-binding poll on where we should focus next:
>Lemuria (Sixth Layer)
>Atlantis (Atlan on Fourth Layer, Atlantis on Fifth)
>Mu (New Mu on Third, Old Mu on Seventh)
>Hyperborea (First Layer)
>Sky People (Probably on multiple layers)
>Malcomites (Unknown Layer)
>Neanderthals and Deep Folk Tribes (Third and Fourth Layers)

We may need to group some together. Like Malcomites and La Ombre might share a chart. It's probably best if we complete these with the least amount of charts, as this project will only have momentum for so long.
>>
>>88605484
Malcolmites have something to do with Lemuria per the document.
Also, I thought the plan was to do an underground compass next?
>>
>>88605638
Well, pretty much all factions are underground, so that's not very specific.
>>
>>88605484
I want Hyperborea!
>>
>>88605484
Hyperborea would be pretty fun.
>>
I don’t believe the Malcolmites need their own thread desu, however my vote is for Mu as they have really arcane and evil vibes going on. Will allow for more exposition on the weirdness, horror, and unnatural nature of the layers.
>>
May be more wise to do a general thread for the underground next which is also not very specific. This thread was technically for the colonials but it was open ended enough to allow ideas that gave exposition but were not strictly faction focused. Doing the same for the underground to have that creative space where ideas can knock around may be better than just doing faction threads now. Once those two are done tho, could see faction threads.
>>
>>88605876
There's definitely not enough of them to warrant their own entire side of a compass. I picture them as sort of a small faction that's mostly relevant through #deeplore and implications. And, within the kayfabe, probably an in-universe author's pet faction.
>>88605976
That's what I'm thinking. The Colonials/Royalists compass definitely seemed to be losing steam toward the end, so we might struggle to complete a third compass if it's too narrow in scope.

I think a general u derground would be a good idea, basically Third Layer shropm farmers, Neanderthals, stinker gorged, etc. Could throw in some representatives from the other factions too. And once that's done we tackle the Lemurians or Atlantis or Mu.
>>
>>88606801
I'd kinda like to, but I think we're all running off the "we completed the chart" high.
If we did, I'd bump Eldest Guard to overflow for Irrational, bump Modern Major General for Imperialist, and possibly bump either Heiress (mary sue that she is) or Rakkad (chad that he is) for Exploration. Dunno about Rational, but it should be someone SUPER rational. Maybe Teddy, or a variant thereof?

Maybe something cave-y?
Stalagmite (representing things that are oriented towards caves and tunnels, with darkness being a secondary association) vs Stalactite (representing things oriented towards either the roof of the cave or open caverns, with light from any source being a secondary association).

So Stalagmite would be stuff like Morlocks, Stalactite would be Sky People; and in the middle you'd have Neanderthals and such.

From what I've gathered Ethiopia is also colonizing the inner earth, so how does this timeline look like:
>Italo-Ethiopian War of 1887–1889 happens as it did
>Only this time Ethiopians are assisted by the benefactors from the Inner Earth (Like Lemurians? They are already involved in India. Maybe subverting surface colonialism is a part of some longterm plan of theirs)
>They don't just hold them off, they completely annihilate the Italians and kick them out of Eritrea
>Ethiopians start exploring Inner Earth through an entrance in the local mountains
>Italy starts lookin a way to the Inner Earth
>The Tyrant of Naples, an eccentric Sicilian noble and/or tycoon, comes up with the Stramboli Plan
>Northern Italy and the Pope secede and form a crusader state hellbent on destroying the Three Sicilies. Also very anti-Inner Earth in general, because this shit is clearly demonic
>The Tyrant completely seizes power in the southern Italy, is crowned the King of Three Sicilies
>>
>>88608006
Isn't Occult vs Righteous the same as Rational vs Irrational?
>>
>>88608017
Wouldn’t the chart be filling much the same purpose? Or does it have to be a different dichotomy than rational - irrational. Unsure, either way >>88607946
this is a pretty one good too.
>>
>>88608038
The general guidelines is each chart is its own schizo beast, to encourage creativity. If Righteous vs Occult mean something entirely different than Rational vs Irrational, it serves that purpose. It just can't be the same.
>>
>>88608059

>>
>>88607901
>>88607926
Civilised v Barbaric/Animalistic Horizontal, Darker v Lighter Vertical.
>>
>>88608008
There's one problem. Since Germany and Austria-Hungary rely on the Italian entrance so much, they have a pretty big incentive to keep the Tyrant's regime stable and have the direct route to southern Italy unobstructed. Allowing the existence of a militant anti-Tyrant/underworld state right in the northern Italy would really fuck with their exploration efforts. So how about this:
>The Italian rebellion is supressed with the help of Germany and AH
>Vatican is destroyed
>The Tyrant of Naples rules all of Italy with an iron fist, thanks to his army of mercenaries and also a contingent of German and AH troops
>Pope and some faithful escape to Spain, but a strong partisan movement is still at large
>Given how religious Iberia was in late XIX - early XX centuries and how popular stuff like Integralism was, it's not too wacky to imagine Spain and Portugal radicalizing and rallying behind the Pope against Italy and the demonic underworlders, as well as in an attempt to revitalize their stagnant empires
>Spain and Portugal launch a joint expedition/crusade/conquista into the underworld through the Pyrenees
>Actually, it's a reconquista, since Spain (as per the lore doc) has discovered the underworld centuries time ago, but kept it secret and probably failed to maintain presence there
>They can have an army consisting of Castilian, Basque, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese etc. crusaders/conquistadors, Italian exiles, Latin American volunteers, some auxilaries from Spanish and Portuguese Africa, even Timorese headhunters and Goan Catholics
>Now, when Italy and Rome itself has fallen to the underworld's dark influence, the army of faithful will finish what they started!
And since we're wrapping up the surface, the factions would look something like this:
>Anglo-French bloc (they both use the Paris entrance)
>German-Austrian-Italian bloc (kinda like original Triple Alliance)
>Iberian Crusade
>Ottomans, Russia, Japan, US and Ethiopia seem to be doing their own things
>>
