>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPS A GAME.
IT IS CURRENTLY PLAYABLE.
EXPEDITION - an ~1870s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood storm hellscape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, fight each other for victory.
A campaign mode is planned, and coming closer.

3 versions of the rules exist, TWO of which have been playtested:
>1e - proof of concept, recently updated with unit stats
>2e - lead by 2e anon, playtests started, ~60% done.
>3e - Replaced 4e because it died. Spearheaded by 3e anon, needs more playtests, rules present in the doc

>What can I do?
Shitpost, meme, get comfy. Read over the docs to settle in.
Familiarize yourself with rules and plan some playtests.
Contribute if you have ideas. Give feedback on contributions if you don't.

> TQ : What should be every Faction's gimmick for the eventual Naval warfare game? And which Factions should we include (we have no obligation to include all or the same as those we have, after all)

> What's the lore behind Napoleon?

Napoleon first learned of the deeper mysteries of the world during his campaign in Egypt. It is known that he encountered something monstrous under the Pyramid of Giza, although not much else is on record of that event (some anon is still working on a piece of fiction on it). In addition, he later deciphers the Rosetta Stone and figures out it contains a map of Entrances to Agartha. 1815 happens but this time he had a backup plan ready, and so he escapes during the trip to St. Helena, seeking refuge underground.
After months if not years of wandering caves and fighting savages, he ends up in Lemuria. The Corsican’s charisma and military genius quickly wins him the friendship of the Deepfolks, who begin initiating him to the secret of Prophesy and Cultivation. Showing great potential in both, Napoleon quickly falls into another messianic ego trip, as he had before when he thought he would go to India and be welcomed as a God. However, a growing part of the Lemurian priesthood soon begin aggressively lobbying against him, going as far as assassination attempts. Prophesies targeting Napoleon himself either always fails or show a blinding light that scorches the prophet’s mind. To the Lemurians, this is the sign of the Fatebreaker, their highest possible crime, somewhat equivalent to being the anti-Christ for Christians. Napoleon is driven in exile even deeper, but his newfound power has given him renewed purpose. He will syncretize all the Agarthan Sciences, learn as much of the true nature of the world, before he can return to the Surface and finally teaches Europe its proper place.
>>
File: old guard.png (571 KB, 477x635)

>>90753557
At this point some of his most loyal soldiers, who figured out his escape plan and the location of the Entrance he used, miraculously manages to find him and swear to follow him wherever he goes. It is not known if Napoleon then taught them Cultivation secrets, or if they changed due to the trip in the Deep, but they are no longer fully human. These will become known as the Oldest Guard, and remains to this day his most trusted agents.
The following years were spent digging deeper and meeting more horrors, either befriending them or beating them and stealing their power. In this Napoleon started competing with Lost King Malcolm, who was essentially doing the same thing. But the accumulation of power allowed him to piece together the puzzle in a way that no one had before. He now understood the Loop.
This caused him to redefine his goal entirely. The Great Game is in truth nothing but a schoolyard game of tag in comparison to the inevitable threat of Hyperborea. Perhaps Napoleon was struck by the deep immorality of it all, or perhaps existing in a world where history reset itself and his place in it would be forgotten by design was just too much for his ego. His plans shifted from rebuilding an army fueled by Agarthan Science in order to come back up to finding a way to break the Loop and delay the Hyperborean invasion as much as possible while doing so. The forces he had accumulated were shifted from military applications to more covert operations, focusing on spying, assassination and corruption rather than actual land conquest. La Ombre, as the organisation named itself, behaves in many ways a lot more like a criminal organisation than a would be Nation.

Latest news on him known by Colonial intelligence tracking his movements is that he marched with the majority of his forces on Mother Unknown’s Palace in the 8th Layer, and he hasn’t been seen since. Many dare to hope that after nearly a decade without any more activity, this means the Emperor finally died. In truth we know that he did beat Mother Unknown (very unconventionally, its left open ended but I really like the shitposted idea that he seduced her and she simply allowed them to pass through), was allowed to leave the Palace with his force and enter the 9th Layer. As opposed to the cosmic horrors of the 8th, the 9th seemed like picnic. Nothing terrible attacked them, the caves soon opened up on a sea… on the middle of which stood a perfect replica of St. Helena. As if struck by a spell, Napoleon ordered his troops to camp, he walked into the small house, picked up a chair and brought it to the beach, where he’s been sitting his days ever since.

Does anyone mind if I make naval tech jump ahead a decade or two for the naval side of things? I plan to include ironclads like HMS Warrior in the WIP naval game, but looking at the state of naval warfare in the 1870s-80s, the ships are very... unaesthetic. It's only in the 1890s with the pre-dreadnoughts that you get proper turrets, secondary batteries, etc. that look cool. Or if anyone has any suggestions for what to include please go ahead.

I'd say keep it closer to the 1870s. Pre-Dreads are sick and all but they wreck shit going up against most Agarthan stuff.
Remember that The Thunderchild was able to kill 1-3 Tripods depending on the adaptation after all.
It would be cool to have a semi-unique unit that's an experimental prototype ship or something.
Also, in my research I found that the last convict ship to Australia was in 1868. And who's to say that in the Agarthan timeline they didn't just start sending convict ships to the land down underground instead?

The sailing/steamship thing is something I'll include, probably as cruisers, it's just the ironclad battleships of the day that I hate. They look like passenger ships with shitty turrets attached. Very ugly for supposed battleships, the actual pre-dreadnoughts look so much better.
>>
>>90753515
I don't know if its too far fetched, but the Brits could have leveraged their assistance to the French into imposing limits to its military navy's size. After the reunion topside France forced Fallen Paris to follow the same rule. The later shirks this rule by employing a disproportionate amount of privateers well beyond the Age of Piracy, which they otherwise disguise as their merchant marine.
>>90756604
>the actual pre-dreadnoughts look so much better.
Very much this.

Does this fit for the Hide mechanic?

> Hide : (2 AP) : Any model without any enemy models with LoS to them may take this Action. Put a Hidden token next to that model. While models are Hidden, they cannot be directly targeted by any Actions, friendly or unfriendly, gain +1 to any Evasion test taken as a result of having an attack scatter on it or adjacent to it, and most importantly, they do not lose AP at the end of the turn. While Hidden, a model cannot take any Action other than a Hidden Move or a Hidden Attack. A Hidden Move is resolved as a normal Move action, except you may combine as many normal Move action together by spending the necessary AP, must declare the end point of the move action before starting to move the model, and anytime you come into Awareness Range and LoS of an enemy model, you must succeed at an Evasion Test or stop the movement and lose the AP spent on it. A Hidden Attack Action is identical to this, except that you will additionally Attack a target at the end of the Movement. You must declare a target for the Attack and a final hex from which that attack will take place. The Attack target does not roll force you to roll an Evasion test for moving within its Awareness range, however you must succeed at an Evasion vs (Awareness - Obscurity) roll. If you beat the opponents roll, the target model is immediately hit with the highest Damage profile of the Weapon used, and gains +3 Penetration for this Attack Armour Save roll. If you fail or your opponent beats you, he may change facing with this model, and you do not get this bonus Attack.
In both cases of a Hidden Move or a Hidden Attack, after it has been resolved, this model loses Hidden (remove the token) and may continue its activation spending the remainder of its accumulated AP, if it has any.
>>
>>90759435
And also, would it be fine if I went back and included Hiding specialization in both La Ombre and the Lost Men.
Both are said to draw their power in large part from their pacts to the Shadows. Currently I have La Ombre's shadow-powers be Dread-themed while the Lost Men are Evasion-themed.
I want to stay away from actions which just forces Obscurity/Lighting rules on you outside of a choice. These should be rather rare.
>>
>>90754998
I think some degree of anachronism is to be expected. All navies created in Agartha would have to be created pretty much from scratch, which means using a good deal of Agarthan materials and dealing with the same anomalous conditions that prompted the rise of the French schizotech. Also, I think Cunningham was mentioned to have lobbied the research and development of submersibles.
>>
>>90759435
So basically you end the turn while Hidden and end up stacking more AP on the next one?
>>
>>90759615

I might try and work in a way to "discover" hidden units.

Ok, gonna try to get some work done on this and finish at least one book today.

While awaiting an answer on the Lemurian Enchantress front, I went back and added the Chem Grenadier as a Troop choice for Mercs, been wanting to do so for a while. I added Chemical Grenades as Special Equipment as well
> Chem Grenades
> Range 5
> Accuracy -1
> Penetration 1
> Lethality X
> Reload 0
> Cost 3
> Special : If this Attack misses, Scatter it D3 from its original hex. Models adjacent to the model hit, in a scattered hex or adjacent to a scattered hex must succeed an Evasion test or take a X wound. Additionally, put a Chem Token in each Hex affected by this attack. Models who move into a hex with a Chemical Token in it must succeed a Strength Test or take a / Wound. Remove Chem Tokens at the end of the following turn.
> Limited use (3) : This is a piece of equipment and not a Weapon, it can be purchased as many times as a model has space to carry it, each time provides 3 uses.
I also went back and added the Gas Mask rule to the Warfare Existentialist.

Added the War Shaman.
I'm also going to reduce the Rockbreaker's armour a a bit (thinking 7/5/3) as well as their Strength, otherwise they just completely invalidate units like the Immortals. Even with this, the Rend + Brutal Charge combo alone ensure they should still be just about the best armour mitigation unit out there.
For the Enchantress, what I'm thinking is that she could charm Beasts and low discipline enemy models, buff the chances of getting good Alchemical Relics from the Cultivated or other sources, and when using Alchemical Relics she has better chances of getting the best result.
And you could directly purchase the Alchemical Relics on her at relatively high cost.

You're just looking at the wrong ships, my friend. French ships during this period in particular were a unique floating fortress of sponsons, cannon ports, and early barrettes which bring a distinct aesthetic that's lost once battleships (which the pre-dreads are the first example of: ironclads before were typically cruisers or littoral combat craft incapable of being seagoing) started displacing their predecessors.

That being said, the Devastation-class exists and is period appropriate, and the difference between them and the ironclads that came before them is practically a gap as wide as the dreadnoughts and the pre-dreads the Devastation inspired.

Here is what I went with for the Volcano Aspirant. If the stat block looks pretty weak remember Heroes can take up to 5 traits, there's a generic list from which to choose to boost this guy's stats if you want to dedicate him to Janara Magic or Combat or Support...
Next should be weapons. Range weapons for Italy will be a bit sub-average for Colonials. Still a range focus list, lethality is going to be mostly the same, but range and accuracy will be a tiny bit lower in most cases.

Nah, the Volcano Gods called him to a higher purpose at that point, he left you. Mechanically right now its only the damage burst. I would likely end up added a special Campaign objective for Duosicilians that's just getting one Aspirant to ascend.
You can already make Heroes into Leaders by selecting the Born To Lead trait.

Everyone knows any legfish appearance after 2001 is caused by grief stricken delusions since Jump Man couldn't save him from being eaten by Gog and Magog in the promotional comic "Breakin' It with the Best of 'Em"

I'm stuck on graveyard shifts for the next few days, which means I'll have a lot of free time at work. I'd like to look into the campaign system so if anyone knows any good procedural hexmap exploration games where you build the map as you go, please share them with me, I'll download the rulebooks and read through them and note down what could work and how it could be adapted.

Going through Verne's back catalog and I noticed he wrote an airships story. Perhaps a French exclusive naval unit? Or something else? Still, shows that we can justify airships in the setting, I might even read it to see if we can throw in anything for the sky captain.

>Going through Verne's back catalog and I noticed he wrote an airships story. Perhaps a French exclusive naval unit? Or something else?
I was going to include a Fallen Paris Airship Line somewhere in the campaign system, perhaps as some very expensive replacement for horse-carriage and other beasts of burdens, or locations you can find that allows you to take trips to other locations through payment, etc...
The French built the first military airship in the world in 1906, the Patrie. It was lost a few months after being handed over to the Army, who forgot to secure it properly during a heavy storm, and went on a lonely trip over the English airspace. It even landed in Belfast before picking up again and then going for a plunge off the Scottish mainland. The builders replaced it with the Republique. Russia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire each ordered a copie of the Patrie.
This is strangely an area of "modern" war that the English did not catch up on as soon as they usually do and were left behind the French, Italians and Germans. The Army tried to get their own airship up following the French example, and had one built in 1911, but it got wrecked while in its hangar. The main project was more or less folded, and the slack was left to be picked up by the Army's School of Ballooning, which opted for a small hybrid fleet of surveillance ship rather than focusing on trying to get the rigid thing down.

Is the Armoured Traction Engine supposed to be based on the Fowler, the Hornsby or some other model?
Thinking that since I've now done the Tripod I might as well give a go at a few other "larger" units.

Traction Engine Anon here:
Firstly, sorry for ghosting you guys with the model. The last few months have been a mess, I've had pretty much no time for any hobby stuff at all. Hopefully I can pick it up again around the holidays.
As for the engine design, it's based on the Hornsby Mammoth and the Armored Train at the Battle of Kafr El Dawwar.
Here's some helpful links:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kafr_El_Dawwar
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RBL_40-pounder_Armstrong_gun
https://issuu.com/hornsbymammoth/docs/hornsby_article_dennis_read
https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Richard_Hornsby_and_Sons:_Hornsby_Mammoth

By my own estimations, it's around the size of a freight car, putting it at around 2 by 3 hexes on a hexgrid scale.

Also, the bucket in the back is where the stoker and driver would be, with the two gunners and four privates on the firing deck, which is elevated on top of the boiler.

Thanks, so I should use something like >>90794480 for the unit model instead of >>90810932, right? Even tho its not perfect its a lot closer in size...

Is this enough?
I didn't want to turn it in another boss model like the Tripod, in a 150 Silver expedition you could still end up having 10+ model along with it. Its gun is very powerful and shoots far but you won't shoot it every single turn if you don't want to keep the whole unit entirely immobile the whole game.

Seems pretty good. Can't wait to see it in action.

With the troop transport ability, I meant it more as a firing platform like in those hussite war wagon things.
But honestly I'll trade that ability for the equipment carrying since that looks sweet. I'm already imagining a base-building-based list.
This is top-tier anon, thank you so much for making my memes become real.

I managed to get a lot of work done on NPC monsters last night, I still have to finish the preliminary list but its taking shape.
Also, I took the liberty to cook this up for the French. I had mentioned a few times we needed at least one more mechanical unit for Eiffel to make sense, and this seemed to fit the aesthetic and theme pretty well.
>>90762881 Hope you don`t mind, but I don`t think they fit well into the Atlan aesthetic, they lack brutality, but they definitely fit the setting more globally.
I don`t know the Steamboy animation, will look it up, so I made them into well armoured cumbersome troops that can use their steam boiler to boost their stats. Their low Evasion means you have relatively high chances of hitting the Body and blow it up, and them knowing that explains why their Discipline is below average for French and Colonials... ?

I may have already posted some of this in a previous thread, but it makes more sense with the NPC profiles done, so here it is again.

No, it's fine. I recommend watching the movie, it's a perfect representation of that steampunk/Victorian sci-fi thing that we have going on here. I think completely untested experimental heavy shock troops designed by Eiffel is a hilarious explanation for their low discipline.

Actually, did we ever do anything with those Franklin Expedition units? Seems like as good a niche as any for them.

Canonically, they're trapped in the 9th layer but I don't see why some of them couldn't escape and spread the good word of, shall we say, alternative sources of nutrition. Maybe it's an ability only they have since they have the experience and craving.

Character/unit concept, I love this piece and I've always wanted to use it for something. Possibly inspiration for a Colonial or Merc unit?
