Lemur Edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPS A GAME.
IT IS CURRENTLY PLAYABLE.
EXPEDITION - an ~1870s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood storm hellscape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, fight each other for victory.
A campaign mode is planned, and currently in the works. (you) are encouraged to contribute.

3 versions of the rules exist, TWO of which have been playtested:
>1e - proof of concept, recently updated with unit stats
>2e - lead by 2e anon, playtests started, ~75% done. Campaign system is developed here.
>3e - Replaced 4e because it died. Spearheaded by 3e anon, needs more playtests, rules present in the doc

>What can I do?
Shitpost, meme, get comfy. Read over the docs to settle in.
Familiarize yourself with rules and plan some playtests.
Contribute if you have ideas. Give feedback on contributions if you don't.

> One of the most time-honored tactics of Old Mu when it goes at war is to barter with the Psysaur clan their assistance in harnessing a large number of Saurs into a stampede ahead of their armies. Both Atlantis and Atlan in particular have been on the receiving end of these rampages, and little beside mass Greek Fire or the deployment of Titanium Golems have been found as a counter tactic in both cases. Only the insane logistical cost of feeding such a herd and the mysterious but certainly high price requested each time by the Herrerasaurus prevent Old Mu from using these every single time they go to war.
> Many Colonials will have heard of these by now through the tale of Big Liz. First harnessed in the late 185x campaign against Atlantis with her mate, the hulking Terrorsaur duo broke very line of Akritai it charged. For a while, it seemed as if both would single-handedly win the war for Mu. This was until the atlantean general made the difficult choice to sacrifice a whole regiment of Akritai to isolate the two beasts from one another, at which point a very brave Iconoclast managed to light up an entire box of Apples of Melanion hidden at the foot of the beast. Her mate's death caused Big Liz to break down partially of her mental shackles, and sent her off running of the battlefield. Ever since, she has been reported to attack any human settlement or Expedition she meets. Stories of her glowing orange eyes during these attacks suggest that perhaps she is still sometimes controlled, or perhaps breaking off the psy shackles allowed her to kept some of the Psysaur intelligence. The tales of her ever increasing size however are more farfetched, as the French have reported spotting a mountain-sized Terrorsaur matching her description...

No worries man, you've done your part and then some as far as I'm concerned.
And heads up, since you've also had the world book in the works: I've been brushing up on my French history and working on a proposal for the French lore that keeps most of the same concepts with extra details, but doesn't have Charles L.N.B. ever become president. Why? Because I think it does better justice to his original profile, where he didn't even do his early failed coups. Obviously the timeline has shifted a bit since the first threads, but I think I've managed to make something decent-to-good with the premise. I'll finish it soon-ish and your input would be critical since you're actually French.

I've finally pulled myself out of a life-morass, and am now just about ready to get more 2e test games with my tabletop group.
Instead of just doing a pickup game, I think I want to referee a scenario between two players instead. I had an idea for one I could write with prebuilt lists that would be good for introducing players to the game.
>SPAWNING SEASON
>Brackish Morlocks, much like Salmon, swim upstream each season to spawn in the headwaters.
>Unfortunately, since last season the British have built a river outpost on the shore.
>British player has to kill all the morlocks or last a certain number of rounds (In lore the gunboat arrives but we don't have to represent that in game)
>Morlocks have to kill all the British, but also get points for reaching the other side of the map
It's like Zulu meets the Innsmouth Raid, or maybe Heart of Darkness meets the Littlest Mermaid
I'll get together the two lists and post them tonight, then do a map and any scenario rules tomorrow
>>
>>91234048
Lists:
>MORLOCK SPAM LIST (98 Silver)
>3x Shamans W/Morlock Staves (15 Silver)
>1x Tall Fin W/ Shield, Axe, Tiderunner, Endless Swarm. (13 Silver)
>3x Morelocks w/ 2H spears (18 Silver)
>1x Morlock Apprentice W/Morlock Staff (4 silver)
>16x Morlock Grunts w/2 Javellins/Shortspears each (48 Silver)
>BRITISH LIST (Swole Sarge and friends [Treating the sarge as a hero unit for this list, minor homebrew]) (100 Silver)
>1x Sarge w/ Born To Lead, Agile, Duelist, Barrel Chested, Swole, Webley, Sabre (23 Silver
>1x Camp Cook (7 Silver)
>2x Tinglits w/ 2H spears (10 Silver)
>6x BAP w/ Rifle, Bayonet (60 Silver)

The British start the scenario outnumbered 2.4 to one, and if the Morlocks start critting it will only get worse. Since the Pelagic Problems monsters are not finished for the most part I plan to refluff that to just summon more Morlocks for the meme. I'm not expecting Endless swarm to come into play unless the Morlock player does really poorly but it felt mandatory since the whole idea is more morlocks.
To give the Brits a fighting chance on a map that will presumably have a lot of water tiles, I'm thinking I will give them one to two full turn to deploy as they want and fortify with some free building materials. And some free rations so the cook has things to do.

Okay so,

you pick a Titan that your character worships and get some sort of...

Why have an ability that does nothing? Is this going to be some kind of experimental avant-garde RPG?
Jokes aside, I imagine you could frame any Titan-based bonuses and abilities as mundane profficiencies and feats of skill, if you don't want them to be explicitly supernatural. E.g. a Pallas worshipper is good at kicking ass, a Promethean is a good craftsman etc.
>>
>>91238895
>Why have an ability that does nothing? Is this going to be some kind of experimental avant-garde RPG?
>Jokes aside, I imagine you could frame any Titan-based bonuses and abilities as mundane profficiencies and feats of skill
Yeah that's what I kind of mean. Vaguely supernatural but mostly salt of the earth type abilities.
>>
Basically, I'm thinking of structuring the RPG so that your "Abilities" represents your social circle.

Call it, "Access to" abilities or something. A servant of, say, Pallas yes, has access to that social circle. Connections. A game built on connections... and also murder. And butchery. And exploration. But also, connections.
>>
>>91239789
How do you envision a regular session going? Is it social groups funding dungeon delves, or heists? Or is it more about building influence?
>>
arrange the RPG core rules as also a sort of abstract setting primer, a section of the character sheet being
>you know X
or perhaps "favors" from any given public figure / temple...
>>
>>91239885
>How do you envision a regular session going? Is it social groups funding dungeon delves, or heists? Or is it more about building influence?
Influence building through expeditions perhaps.
Spending influence to empower said expeditions, or perhaps learn about secrets.
Other than the obvious currency, "Favors" could be a currency...
Perhaps "Stories" or "Secrets" could be another? Tell a story, get a favor...
>>
>>91239789
That could certainly work well for Atlantis, since it has shaped upt to be all about your rite, class and politicking. But some clearing up of certain lore aspects is needed. The discussion in the doc has died ever since the anon who started the rite system dissapeared, but to reiterate somewhat, that's how I would do it:
>Titanic, Dodekatheonic, Orphic - these work as is
>Gigantic - Orignating from a local oracular cult of Gaia, their doctrine was based on the oracles' revelations. They see the modern Atlantean society as decadent and corrupt, seeking to refrom it by going back to the ideals of the Golden Age. Anti-Epigean and anti-aristocracy, they want Atlantis to be a republic of "true" aristocrats, ruled by respected elders and Philosopher-Kings, men of supreme merit and not just bloodline and wealth. Also very militaristic and hawkish towards the other Agathans and the colonials. Similar to Atlan in some respects, they hate Atlan in particular and view their state as a barbaric corruption of the Old Atlantean ideals
>Christic - remnants of the Roman-Byzantine Christians, they believe in a single God manifesting himself in the forms of legendary heroes, such as Orpheus, and Christ. Neither an officially recognized nor illegal Rite, they're experiencing a revival due to the influence of Epigean missionaries. In a bizarre theological confusion, some of the accepted the Pope as the latest manifestation of God on Earth
>Oracular - worship the Inner Sun as Hyperion-Apollo and couple it with Lemurian mysticism (in secret, as it's illegal). But they're anti-Lemurian and see themselves as the true bearers of prophetic arts.
>Lemuric - actual practitioners of Lemurian mysticism
>Muic - actual practitioners of Muic non-existence cult
I suggest we scrap Tartaric and Mithraic. The first one is redundant, we have a good enough murder cult in the form of the Hyperborean Rite. Mithraic was a silly idea, I take full responsibility and want it removed.
>>
>>91204989
Finally coming back to this thread, figured I'd cook up some unit ideas for the US.

Edison Electrical Emitter
>Referred to as triple-E first by the fans, then in lore
>Costly, but one of the best artillery units in the game
>"Chain Lightning" (not sure whether this is a rule or wargear) is a horde-killer

Colt-Browning "Potato-Digger" Machine Gun
>Lever-action machinegun
>Lighter than Maxim gun, easier upkeep during campaign

Winton Motorcar
>Vast array of wargear, can take one modification at no cost
>Can be anything from a ghetto armored car to a scout vehicle
>For a good time put your Rangers in one of these
>>
>>91240461
Also, on the topic of Atlan. There has been some contradictory lore written on them and I think that the civil war split might work better at this point, given the additions made to Atlantean lore. Unless some Mesoamerican autist works some magic on the lore I don't see much value in keeping the Yucatan colony bit. I can even see how it could roughly work:
>Atlantis falls
>Civilization collapses and you have different factions of survivors rebuild and then vie for supremacy
>Eventually one of them reunites all of the survivors into a single kingdom/republic
>They expand on the Fifth and the Fourth Layers (since Layers form retroactively, the Fourth Layer was always there)
>Mainline Atlantean religion shifts and becomes more Atlas-centric
>Waves of Epigean migrants change Atlantean culture
>The enlightend republic-monarchy slowly grows more corrupt and dominated by the major aristocratic families
>Resentment grows among the colonists of the Fourth Layer over these changes and their relationship with the metropole
>The Eternal War starts as a republican and anti-Epigean revolt, but Atlan grows more Titanium-schizo and militaristic as the war goes on, culminating in the Tit King takeover
>Meanwhile many Atlanteans are starting to wonder why they can't defeat Atlan and get tired of the incompetent Epimethean dynasty and their cronies, culminating in the Revolution and the election of Perseus II
Another option could be that the separation between Atlantis and Atlan happens after the fall of Atlantis, as one of the groups of survivors migrates to the Fouth Layer and becomes the Atlans. Then the conflict sparks when they meet again and Atlantis tries to conquer them.
>>
>>91240614
I think they could use the distinctiveness of Mesoamerican influences, desu. I can try to work something in about the Toltecs and Olmecs. That's not necessarily incompatible with a civil war.
>>
>>91240614
>Unless some Mesoamerican autist works some magic on the lore
Hey, that's me! The Yucatan isn't necessarily the only place for an Atlan/Atlantean colony, even though the Chicxulub impact crater is one of the major openings to the inner layers. If we're just keeping with the Maya, their city-states extended as far down as Nicaragua. Tikal might be worth looking at, as lidar scans have shown that a large amount of the city (more than was previously thought) is still buried, even though excavations have been going on since the 1950s. Outside of the Maya, Teotihuacan feels like it could be an Atlan colony in the lore. It's estimated to be the sixth-largest city in the world in its time, and while we don't know much about the civilization that inhabited it, there's a wealth of archaeological evidence to suggest their influence stretched as far down as Veracruz and the Mayan city-states, and they were more than willing to use force to expand their influence.
>>
>>91241126
If we go with the colony route, maybe there could have been some kind of Mormon secret history shit with an advanced civilization of proto-Atlans surviving in Mesoamerica until parts of it sink (any specific reason?) into what is now the Fourth Layer.
Coincidentally, that raises the question of how exactly Layers form (again). At this point, given where everyone is located, I think the only way it works is that it forms between the Second Layer and the Layer to which the civilization falls, so Third at the time. So when Atlantis fell, the Fourth Layer formed and was always there, when Atlan falls the current Third Layer formed and was always there, etc. Basically, there's one continuous Surface, with parts of it falling.
I think (?) the original intention may have been different, there's even a reference in the doc to the possibility of the current Surface sinking in it's entirety and Hyperborea becoming the "next" Layer, so help me out here.
>>
>>91241535
>Mormon secret history shit with an advanced civilization of proto-Atlans surviving in Mesoamerica until parts of it sink
Any chance to involve the Mormons in the lore is a chance we should take.
>any specific reason?
The area around modern-day Mexico City (where both Tenochtitlan and Teotihuacan are located) is prone to earthquakes due to its surface geology, so there's that.

>Hyperborea mentioned
I had an idea that Hyperborean society is stratified based on the level of sensation one can experience. The average human is only capable of experiencing 2 levels (the number is just a placeholder) of sensation, which is nothing to the average Hyperwarrior. Their desire to accrue brains could be driven by the desire to experience MORE via various body-horror science experiments, too.

So I guess we have a rebelling Atlantean colony somewhere in Central America. It fell (when?) and either founded surface colonies or exerted influence on later Mesoamerican civilizations, like the Olmecs (1500 to 400 BC), Teotihuacan (0 to probably about AD 700), Toltecs (950 to 1150), and Maya (1000 BC on). During this period, Atlan society become more dictatorial.
There was possibly also Mormon stuff going on. iirc, some Mormons do try to place the events of the Book of Mormon in Mesoamerica. Their narrative involves a conflict between the Nephite and Lamanite peoples, both of whom were derived from Hebrew colonists who fled Jerusalem around 600 BC. There are also Jaredites, who arrived directly from Babel and had declined by the time the Nephites/Lamanites showed up. The Nephites/Lamanites also eventually decline and become "wicked", and the Lamanites are traditionally supposed to have become the ancestors of modern Native Americans.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Mormon_chronology
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_geography_model
Personally, I'm in favor of focusing mainly on the Mesoamerican stuff, though Lost Tribes etc. do feature a lot in 19th-century pseudohistory, even beyond the Mormons.
Mesoamerican myths have a lot of underworld stuff going on, including a many-layered underworld, though some academics now say this idea may have been introduced after the Spanish conquest.

>One interesting Aztec/Mexica origin story
Speaking of the Aztecs, I can't help but connect Xipe Totec, the Aztec god of agriculture, to Hyperborea.
>Referred to as The Flayed Lord
>Flayed his own skin to give food to humanity
>Related to plague and disease, specifically eye diseases
>Aztecs believe him to be the creator of war
>Festival honoring him involved gladiatorial sacrifice of captives wearing freshly flayed skin of sacrifices
>After peeling the skin of a sacrifice, priests would wear it for twenty days during the subsequent rituals
>Said skin was adorned with jewelry and feathers, and putting it on was a ceremony in and of itself
The proof is all there.
>>
>>91242599
I meant it more like the Lost Tribe narrative could be an extremely inaccurate retelling of the proto-Atlan history in Mesoamerica.
When 2e anon was figuring out chronology he proposed the Fall of Atlantis to happen somewhere between 4-5k BC. So let's say, back then there were Atlantean colonies in Mesoamerica, as well as some remnants of an older colony of Mu that survived after Mu sunk. As the Fall of Atlantis was accompanied by a Hyperborean invasion supposedly stopped by Atlas, both remaining civilizations were likely heavily damaged. So the surviving proto-Atlans and Mu remnants rebuild and eventually come to blows. That's where the account of the Nephite VS Lamanite wars comes from. Maybe their war is what causes their own sinking in the end. Maybe somewhen decently deep into the Mesoamerican Archaic, around 4000 BC? Proto-Atlans then become, well, Atlans and surviving Mu spreading among the Deepfolk tribes, bringing them under the Old Mu influence. Then, when Atlantis and Atlan eventually meet underground they end up in a war. Atlanteans would tell you Atlans submitted to them but then rebelled, whereas Atlans would insist they were attacked. How does that sound?

>Scientific expeditions (geologists, naturalists), explorers, and intelligence-gathering operations will all be out for mainly nonmonetary rewards.
Speaking of which, character concept.
Poor Lazarus/Po' Lazarus
>Non-combat guide, just wants to explore
>Been underground since 1821, still says he's from Mississippi
>Likely patient zero for the Rock Pox epidemic
>Moving through the Layers has never been easier thanks to his "Have Grapple, Will Travel" rule
>Recurring character in the Juliette Verne books

Hey, that's probably a Fallen London item. At a minimum, there are going to be a great many of Heinrich Schliemanns.
But a decent number of people will be in it for the discovery that show the Gradualists, Darwinists, or Gano-Ducksworthians. Or, indeed, for the sheer joy of being driven mad by the riddles at the heart of the world.

>FL Item
They're more focused on Ushabti when it comes to second-city stuff. But discussing that game in here feels kind of weird so I'll leave it at that.
Also:
>Darwinists
The Descent of Man takes on a much different meaning in the Agartha world, let me tell you that.

I don't know but perhaps, I'll look it up, sounds liek great inspiration.

Just looked it up and alright then, looks like I have some games to play.
They seem like good inspiration for this. Not perfect, mind you, the style is a bit off but close enough.

Its settled. Ancient mummy thievery will be the first module.

Fallen London sort of sucks. It's a remarkably well-written grindfest browser game, but it's still a grindfest browser game. YMMV, of course. Sunless Sea, however, involves some of the best fantasy/weird writing/setting-building ever while being very atmospheric and perfectly playable. It's still mechanically unpolished, but easily the most reccomendable, imo.
Sunless Skies is mechanically the best and still very well written, but loses some of the magic of the world.
(They also made a dating sim, which I haven't played, and their lead writer left to make Cultist Simulator, which is very good but less relevant. )
It's sort of an earworm of a setting, if that makes sense, it's very compelling and it makes you want to reproduce it. There seems to be a lot of influence from it in the foundational material of this setting.
>>
>>91245129
Yeah looks solid, the whole system I mean.
I think settling on Secrets / Stories as a main currency of the game, or at least some form of mechanic, is good for now.
Fits the aesthetic.

Sure, I don`t think the whole Charles being a Prince-President made that much sense anyhow. And I`ll gladly read up and include what you pump, I`m sure it`ll be good.
btw I`m gonna work on Ottomans this evening, did we ever have more inspiration as to anything special the Djinn Bombard does (beside shooting shit?) Like, an evil Djinn spawns if you kill it or use it too much or whatever? Anything to make it feel more than just a big piece of artillery I guess...

>>"Chain Lightning" (not sure whether this is a rule or wargear) is a horde-killer
How do you envision this in gameplay terms? Just jumps over from any adjacent target to another?
>>
>>91249252
I'm pretty sure the Djinn mechanic we worked out was that you had to feed it things for it to shoot. If we wanted to expand on that maybe it would start eating your own dudes if you uncorked it but didn't feed it.
So like, it starts uncorked, and then you can uncork it and use it, but if you don't keep it happy shit goes down so you either have to re-cork it before that happens or live with the consequences.
>>
>>91249252
>How do you envision this in gameplay terms?
Maybe if it kills the target it hits, it jumps over to the nearest adjacent target, wounding it. If that unit's weak or already wounded, well...

Thanks!
His story is he's an escaped slave who got lost in one of the entrances to the Layers. He contracted Rock Pox at some point down there (before the first surface expedition, so maybe the 1830s or 40s). This normally lethal or severely debilitating disease slowly and painfully petrifies the body, but Lazarus was miraculously immune to the worst of its effects, something he regularly chalks up to his faith as a Quaker but could well be due to his incredible lucky streak. The character has been around since second edition, but wasn't a fan favorite until the Juliette Verne novels (maybe he's how shroom farmers got reintroduced).

Thanks to Hextml and some assets 2 minute tabletop I now have a map for spawning season just about ready. Here's the custom rules I was thinking of:
>Rickety Bridge:
>There is a half-built bridge over the river. It counts as regular terrain for rules purposes, with the exception that a strength check must be made to enter it if a unit is standing in water (To represent climbing up the bridge.) Units on the bridge can spend 1 AP to pull units from below up. The Bridge can be attacked like a structure, with each hex being treated as having two health boxes. Bridge hexes that are destroyed in this manner revert to deep water.
>CONSTRUCTION SUPPLIES:
>There are three supply caches on the map (Represented by the crate graphics.) Each cache contains 10 materials, 1 medkit, and 5 rations. A unit can spend 1 AP to retrieve as many items as it can carry from a cache. Units with a cache in their deployment zone may choose to equip their units with resources from the cache at no AP charge during unit deployment.
The other additional rule is probabbly just to give the defending team one turn to fortify and deploy as they see fit.
All that's left is to designate some shallower water and deployment zones and then we're good to playtest it.

Here we go! I'll eventually try to cut down on the rule space by using more the Explosion special rule I set up, I had forgotten I had made it a keyword mechanic. Hopefully I got the "feed it stuff" done ok. I reckon thanks to it and the low cost of other Ottoman troops it could be a really strong center point. In a larger 150 point game bringing 2 and just a bunch of Husks carrying Material to feed them and run interference with the opposite team might be really strong. Also, lol, Napoleon could run a ridiculously abusive list with it.

Damn I love that. You just know someone is going to leave an important object too close to the thing and weep as it takes a little snack.
It's only able to eat friendly models, but it could in theory eat enemy gear.

Kek, that wasn't intended. Should I leave it like that? Seems like a hilarious way to fuck over your opponent who decided to charge the Bombard with someone carrying precious shit.
I'll work on the Boneswarm during my shift this evening and post what I came up. Thinking of making it a unit that doesn't even need to Attack to kill you, it just walks over you, so the growing unit token really comes into play.

Welp, that's a lot of rules. In the end it functions pretty simply, you just move it around and try to grow the blob and watch hapless breathers try to escape it.
Cost might see some heavy revision, its powerful but it needs to be grown, paying 25 out of pockets for them is pretty rough when they will get wrecked if shot at while Small. But then again even if you just grow it to Medium its still pretty tough and can just zoom through horde list.
>>

is there a limit to the movement bonus from shambling mass? I can see someone sending the thing off like a fucking racehorse with the right deployment.

Also greedy mass is good but I'm already laughing imagining what would happen against Atlan.
>>
>>91262695
Oh I meant to set it to 5 max, good catch, will fix.
>Also greedy mass is good but I'm already laughing imagining what would happen against Atlan.
Its only +1 per model with a higher armour value tho its not "its gains the armour value of what it ate". I did want to have it gain Titanium or Asbestos or other Armour rule but opted out in the end.

I'll try to finish up necromancy today and the (non-husked) Ottoman Necromancer.
We would probably need one more Leader or Hero unit that can become a Leader for Ottomans, so anyone got any ideas?

ok, so I feel pretty dumb asking this question after all the work we've put into brewing a campaign mode, but its been nagging me since I've looked at >>91252254 >>91235115 >>91234048 ...
So, any reason why we couldn't make a very simple Campaign mode as a "normal" 2e game on a very large map, probably with the caveat that until shots are fired player vs player each Expedition moves all its models in a row?
We'd lose the "explore and fill the map" aspect of it but that's also the most heavy and i feel would generate huge bookkeeping to pull off interestingly.
There's already NPCs, ressource exploitation, building and "random" events built-in 2e and whatever is missing wouldn't be hard to include directly in, instead of having an "overmap" system... Perhaps with a referee or a DM player of sort ...
>>
>>91271577
I don't like that idea, it's too much like an RTS which is not what I'm here for.
I made Spawning Season as just a fun intro scenario, but I think that an overworld map style campaign mode is definitely the way to go.
>>
>>91271612
>it's too much like an RTS
Ok no problem, not trying to push it just thought it might be a way to cut down on work needed if it fitted, but I have no issue if it doesn't.
>>
>>91271577
>So, any reason why we couldn't make a very simple Campaign mode as a "normal" 2e game on a very large map,
I don't see a reason not, but its also probably fine to have special rules for said large map game mode too.

Nice work bros. I'll get onto the naval side of things soon if I have time in the pre-Christmas rush. Also I absolutely love the Triple E.
