/qst/ - Quests

In the late seventies through the early nineties, drug violence in South America only continued to escalate. A successful revolution by the IRA in Ireland encouraged similar revolts in central Africa that devolved into decades-long civil wars, and a USSR faction in the Russian government. Human trafficking for both the organ and the sex trades exploded between south-east Asia and eastern Europe. In the face of such chaos, government run militaries and agencies were too caught up in red tape to be effective in combatting these threats. Traditional armies abdicated their throne as international super-powers, and turned it over to the world of private military contractors.

Thirty years later, the private military industry is a widely accepted fact of life, a necessary evil for the security of the world. While many people in the civilized world resent these men for what they represent, they are also aware that they need them, lest the world fall into the hellscape that it was once again.

You are Jan Kowalski, a Polish special forces operator turned private military contractor. In return for cash and other liquid currency, you, and men like you go places national militaries can’t, and that local police forces won’t.

“Eh, I’ve had worse. I think we all have. But anyway,” you say, rising from your seat, “I’m gonna go try to get this Hank guy figured out. See ya,” you give a small wave as you wander over towards Hank.

“Well, hello, mister Kowalski,” he begins in his ridiculous accent as you near your seat. “Hell of a show you boys put on back that. Put down most of them before anyone knew you were even after them!”

“It paid off. That firefight may have gone a lot differently if they’d all been rushing at us,” you reply. “All that intelligence you had on them really paid off. Feel like sharing where you picked up skills like that?”

He smiles largely and begins. “Well, when I was a younger chap, I had a job similar to your ‘handlers’, as you gentlemen call them. I was responsible for reconnaissance for MI6 agents. If there was something they needed to know, it was my job to find out for them. I still can’t talk about most of it, but you have the gist of it now.”

Kind of hard to believe this walking caricature of England was a spy, but you supposed that was kind of the point, now wasn’t it?

Anyway, that answers that question.

Ask about some of the finer points of recon.
Not in the picking out targets and opportunities, but identifying people that are nervous or who can be pressed for info.
Stuff that the spooks handled but that we didn't do.
>>
>>130762
Thats fair. If the readers agree, we could do out of the ordinary things like break into a military base or something though right?
>>

You guys are Kowalski, I'm just the universe around him. I'll write what you guys choose, to an extent, but your actions WILL have consequences. I'd prefer you didn't push the boundaries on those.

We're talking to Hank, trying to work on our intelligence gathering. Writing.
>>
“So,” you say, “you were a spook. Any tips on the finer points of intelligence gathering? Not really recon, but more like… convincing someone to share. We almost had a situation with a guy that didn’t speak english. Just wondering how to press folks for intel.”

He seems to chew on his answer for a moment. “Well, in the movies you always see the bad guys beating up or torturing the good guy for stuff like that. It doesn’t work. Anyone that will know anything worthwhile will be able to take a pounding. It’s the threat of violence that usually does it. Cutting up a guy’s fingers will just make him hate you, and guard the information close. Be a little vague with a big enough knife, or something creative, and that’s usually when the lips loosen up and the intel starts flowing.”

That made sense. You wouldn’t give in to someone beating you with a crow bar, but if they implied they might be getting a little creative with it… Well, that’s another story.

“Another thing. The grunts will usually know at least where to get the information, even if they don’t have it themselves. They’ll also generally be able to tell you what you can do to get it out of a superior, if they’re pressed hard enough.”

Again, made sense. As much as they try to hide it, the ground-floor guys usually know their officers vices, and what may need to be done to get what you want.

I heard US Marines used to read Meditations by Marcus Aurelius because one of their generals made everybody read it. Maybe we could learn something from it.

I'll combine them all, in the interest of fairness and universe expansion.

Writing.
>>
“So, do you keep up on the intelligence community? Any brewing hotspots in the world,” you ask, trying to get a leg up on any contracts in the future.

He throws his head back in a short laugh. “More than you’d like to know. Most of South and Central America are cartel-run shit holes. Always something going on there. Central Africa, too, all those civil wars and precious stone mines. Always someone taking one over or getting one back. South-east Asia, selling sex and spare organs. Nasty business, that. A few new ones are cropping up, it looks like. The middle east is heating back up, with an ISIS resurgence, lately, kidnappings and various terrorism. North Korea and China, too, probably. Some eco-terrorists have been claiming they’re gonna start taking oil rigs, and they’ve been getting more aggressive in the past few years. I’d take some real consideration that they might try it. All in all, a great place for someone who makes a living shooting problem-causers.”

“It usually is, Hank. It usually is.”

At that, you head back to your seat. You take a bit of Arne Olafsson’s advice, and open a book. It may not be as fantastic an adventure as whatever fantasy novel he’s reading, but Meditations by Marcus Aurelius certainly has it’s place in the world. Most contractor companies give it to new hires, and you figure you might as well find yourself in this before before you lose yourself in drink.

You read until there are a few hours left on the straight shot home, and you can’t hold your eyes open any more.

You wake as the plane sets down on the runway, the gentle bounce waking you. You gather your things and disembark, the period of motionlessness making your ribs even more tender.

Figure out what Meditations provides that isn't already covered in the 5, or so, important quotes by Marcus Aurelius. Wonder why the book has aged much worse than Art of War, and maybe even the faggotry that is "The Prince."
>>
The last thing you need is to be asked ‘do you feel bad about defending yourself’ while one of your ribs isn’t connected to the rest of itself. You give Tiffany a ring on her cell on your way to the med wing.

“I noticed you aren’t in my office, despite the fact the plane has landed,” she starts. You can’t pass this up.

“Yeah, I got shot. I’ll be in before long.”

“You fucking what?! You-” is as far as she gets before you hang up. That’ll teach her.

You shut your phone off as you round the corner into the medical wing. You ask the receptionist where you can find someone to look at your ribs, and she has you wait for an available doctor.

The doctor calls you into the office and pokes around a lot more than you think is needed. It hurts, a lot, and you really don’t think it’s helping the bruise, which is already too large to be covered by one hand.

You spend about half an hour in the office, and leave wrapped up and with a new prescription for what you’re sure are going to be some serious pain killers. Time to head over to Tiffany’s office. You have an opportunity here.

>Play it up
>You’re a professional, act like it.
>>
>>131781

You can't get "Meditations" out of your mind and what possessed you to read it. I mean, stoicism is a decent concept, but you just can't see what there is to write about, even if it's just a rather short book. Finally you admit to yourself that you quit after chapter two, figuring the quotes were enough.

The doctor prescribes you some Percocet, you take a couple like the punk bitch you are and have really vivid dreams. Then you wake up in the morning to find your squadmates having split the bottle in an attempt to get high.

You realize that pain killers are a gimmick that prevent you from being a reasonable adult, so you stop being a puss puss and rest until your shit heals so you don't end up with permanent injuries.
>>
>>131781
>You’re a professional, act like it.
Try to reschedule debriefing for tomorrow, when we are better rested(and hopefully doped out of the ass, though it's possible that we legally can't be under the influence for the deposition)
>>
As fun as it would be to ham it up for Tiffany, you decide you should probably keep this professional. Dammit anyway.

You knock on the door as you open it, and Tiffany throws a pen at your head.

“Fuckin’ dick. Sit down. We have to do this.”

Thirty minutes later, the two of you have finished that bullshit.

“Alright, bad news. Company policy is that you can’t sign onto a contract until you’ve been cleared by to medical staff. So, looks like you’re off for a week or two. Get some rest, get some relaxation. Or, do some training, go clubbing, and all that fun stuff. I’m not your mother. Do whatever you want, just don’t sign onto any company contracts. Need anything else?”

You set the backpack full of the USB drives and hard drives on Tiffany’s desk. “Picked up a mess of stuff like this. They might have information on where the rest of the girls went. If you could get them to the client, they could probably find something on it. Of course, and for our services in providing this, perhaps they could find it in their hearts to give us a small bonus.”

She takes the bag and looks inside. “Well, a bonus would depend on what they find, of course. But I’m sure we can work something out with them. A lot of families will be looking for daughters.”

“I’m sure they are. Speaking of daughters, do you know if Harris is back from visiting his? I have some tertiaries for him.”

She taps away on her keyboard for a second. “Personnel records say he is unavailable until tomorrow night. If you want, though, I can get it to his handler. Might be easier that way. Or you can get it to him yourself if you have something to talk to him about. Whatever’s easier.”

You shrug, either probably works. You’ll work on it. “So, Tiffany. How did you end up doing HR for a contractor company?”

She smiles, excited. “Well, I went through college getting a psychology degree. I floated around a few human resources divisions, and ended up taking a job here. I started here just after you did, they pair us specifically, you know. I think I’ll stick around, I’m sure this will be a lot more interesting than working in some hospital call center or bleak office building. So, anything I can do to make your work easier will probably be best. We should be working together, right?”

“Well, actually, since you mention it, could you let me know when there are gun shows or anything like that in town, or when permanent places have decent sales?”

She nods, and makes a note on her computer. “Yeah for sure! I’ll shoot you a text whenever I get wind of something that. Sound good?”

“Sounds great! Thanks, I appreciate it.”

She sarcastically feigns offense at the statement. “What gave you that impression?”

“Oh, you know. Anyway, I wanted to take Hank out on the town tonight to thank him for such a smooth op. It really wouldn’t have worked at all without everything he gave us on the complex. Think you might be able to help out with that?”

“Oh, shit yeah,” she exclaims, excited at the prospect of spending a night out. “You weren’t the only one on that op, though. I know Devin wouldn’t be into it, with his alcohol thing, but I think Raines and Thompson might be interested in going out, too. Want them to tag along?”

“Sounds good. I’ll have Skyler and Jordan here waiting. Call Hank on your way back, and I’ll see you in an hour?”

You leave the office and make the quick drive home. Casimir is extremely excited to see you, despite that you’ve only been gone about 36 hours. You’d planned to invite Charlie, but he seems to be at either work or Ivoeta’s. His loss.

You dress for the occasion and start the drive back. You dial up Hank on the way.

“You still at the HQ barracks,” you ask him.

“Well, yes, but-”

“Good. Be in the HR wing in 15 minutes. Wear something nice.” You hang up, and finish the drive safely.

You get out of your car, and walk back to Tiffany’s office. You hear talking inside, and open the door to find Skyler, Jordan, and Tiffany chatting waiting for you and Hank, who shows up about two minutes later.

The five of you hop into a cab, and end up at some club with a name you couldn’t pronounce. You never were much for loud music, or dancing, but you were always very much one for pretty women. There were a couple places to be, however.

Hank may be a little old for the dance floor, but you’ll be damned if that’s going to stop you from dragging him out there anyway. The music isn’t fantastic by any means, just some of whatever of the latest stuff is getting factory made, but it’s got a decent enough beat to dance to.

There’s a handful of other groups on the dance floor, but they all seem off in their own little worlds. They look like they might be open to additions, however. Seems like a bachelorette party, a group of people that work together, and a few groups of individual friends.

You start trying to decide which one to work your way over towards, when your phone starts vibrating in your pocket. You’re not sure how you noticed over the music and the crowd, but you pull it out anyway.

That’s weird. Solomon Hyun.

new anon, just caught up with the archived threads and re: difficulty discussion, I think the way the last op worked flowed well, sure it wasn't a grueling meat grinder, but you don't want every op to be like that, thats how you end up dead in Nigeria in a drug trade gone bad. So I say how things were worked fine, and as the quest grows, things will evolve as needed, but don't try to force difficulty or challenge, because then you overdo it.

>>133164
so far its been preddy gud, though I'm not too picky as long as it feels 'authentic', don't feel like you need to pander or go full realism, just focus on making it feel believable and fun, don't worry about being a little larger than life in many aspects, characters, setting or mechanics wise, because real life isn't all that fun for those who don't enjoy gunfights
>>
“Well, I mean, I took a hit earlier and probably broke a rib, so I can’t really do much. But yeah, I’m willing to talk about it. Where at?”

“You’re just unable to take client contracts. Which is fine, you won’t need to. In fact, don’t until I talk to you. Also, don’t worry. It’s nothing sketchy. Meet me at the range tomorrow when you have time. See ya.”

He hangs up, and you back to the dance floor. Looks like Jordan is mingling with the bachelorette party, Skyler is getting awfully friendly with Tiffany, who doesn’t seem to mind much. Hank is doing some rather risque dancing for a 50-something, especially since it’s with a woman half his age.

>Skyler could use a wingman
>Maybe Hank’s girl has a friend
>Poor Jordan. He couldn’t possibly handle those girls all by himself.
>Find your own group to elbow in on

>>133176
It does feel 'authentic' though? That's what I'm aiming for. I assume it's not 'all gunfights, all the time'. Aiming for making these people more than just guns for hire.

it does so far, and yeah, showing both sides of the life of a contractor helps it be relatable a lot, we tend to forget we're humans when on the clock downrange sop its always good to be reminded of that back in civilisation

Raines is in far over his head. There’s no way he could possibly escape that much enemy attention. Any good teammate would go in and at least lay down suppressing fire, if not draw some from the enemy. Really, what you’re doing here is a kind, selfless act. You’re a hero.

You would also be more than willing to perform other kind, selfless acts on a number of these women. Specifically, the blonde in the heels, the redhead in the skirt, or that brunette with the… very tight shirt.

You walk over, weaving in and out of people dancing, and shoot Skyler a thumbs up as you pass him. He enthusiastically returns it, before giving his attention back to Tiffany, who seemed like she was missing it. You weren’t sure when she got a drink, but she has one in her hand now.

You’re getting close, now, and Jordan is waving you over. Seems he doesn’t want all this to himself either.

You muscle your way in, which isn’t difficult when the girls notice you. You start dancing with…

You begin dancing with the well-endowed brunette lady for a few minutes before she starts speaking.

“I’m Bridget. Are you a friend of Jordan,” she asks.

“Yeah, I’m Kowalski! I had to take a call earlier, so I missed out. Looks like I still got some good pickings, though” you reply, really hoping you’re turning on the charm.

“Oh! He said you might come by,” she yells. “He said you work together?”

“Uh, yeah, we do. I haven’t been there long, though,” you say, being purposely vague.

“And what work is that, Mr. Kowalski,” she says.

Fuck. Public opinion doesn’t really allow for a ‘neutral’ stance on contractor work. Most are for it, or against it, usually vehemently either way. You look towards Jordan, hoping for some help, but he has his attention firmly on a spectacularly short skirt.

>We’re private contractors. Just got back from Jakarta, actually.

>We’re investors

“We do security work. Our offices are actually here in the city,” you respond, dodging the question but looking for all the world like you answered it.

“Oh that’s kind of cool. For like, banks and stuff,” she asks. She seems pretty okay with it, but there’s a difference between wearing a tie in front of a bank vault, and shooting up the warehouse district of Jakarta.

“Eh, kind of wherever they need us.” You’ve gotten good at this half-lie over time. It happens more than it should.

“So, do you carry a gun, then?”

“When they let us. It can get pretty dangerous,” you’re glad she’s half drunk and in such a chaotic environment. She might start questioning more closely if she wasn’t, and you aren’t sure how that would go over.

“Well, that’s good. Wouldn’t want you getting hurt, you might need someone to take care of you... “ She lets the sentence trail off, tugging lightly at the bottom of your shirt

“Well, actually, I did take a hit earlier. It’s bugging me pretty bad. Enough to maybe get out of here…” You say, with all the grace in the world. Aphrodite herself wouldn’t have stood a chance against such a smooth line.

She quickly takes a hotel keycard out of her purse, and raises up to her tiptoes to whisper into your ear. “Well, we have a suite in the city, and these girls will be out partying for quite some time, if you think you need a little care…”
Your ribs fucking hurt. It was absolutely worth every moment, but you’re sore. There was some awkwardness explaining that no, ‘taking a hit’ was not just an excuse to get out, and that you actually did get shot, because you do more than guard banks. By that time, though, she was so ready to go it didn’t really matter. That shirt actually ended up hiding a lot more than it revealed, which was impressive. You’re half-awake in a hotel room, clothes everywhere, including a very impressive bra hanging over the television. As far as you can tell, you’re still alone with Brittany… NO. Shit. Bridget. You’re still alone with Bridget. You could probably sneak out without waking her up, or you could go a second round before you head out.

>Just go

You decide your ribs aren’t all that sore, and slide under the covers, and wake in in a way she very much approved of last night, and seems to appreciate this morning as well.

About an hour later, you’re stumbling out the door, phone number in hand, and find Jordan doing something similar, in an equally disheveled state.

“That redhead with the belt she called a skirt,” you ask, innocently enough.

“Ohhh yeah,” he replies, “my first redhead, too. I still haven’t slept. The rumors are true, man. I’m headed back to HQ, if you wanna split a cab.

>Yeah, I gotta meet Hyun anyway

“Yeah, sure. I’m parked there anyway. I was anticipating either not being able to drive home, or not needing to. I need to meet Solomon Hyun about some cryptic shit anyway.”

“Alright, cool. So, just how interesting was your night….”

You pull up in front of the Impact! HQ, and get in your car. It’s a half decent drive out to the rifle range, but you make good time getting there.

Solomon is the only one on the range, sitting on a bench shooting at what looks to be about 700 yards. You politely wait for him to finish his magazine, and then make your presence known.

He turns back to see you. “Oh, good. I was worried you wouldn’t come. So, have you heard about Combatix at all?”

Combatix was a forerunner of cutting edge combat gear. Comms, drones, tech, you name it. If it had circuits and belonged on a battlefield, Combatix had a research team on it.

“Of course, half the industry uses something of theirs. Why?”

“Well, they just finished this top-of-the-line simunition training location outside of Dallas. They’re holding a tournament in about a week to unveil some new training equipment and the new facility. Some really big names are going to be there, and I got drawn to put a team together and participate. 20 grand to the winning team, up to 6 team members. You’re the first guy I’ve talked to, but do you think you’d be interested in that?”

“You’re damn right I want to be one of the first guys to play with some new Combatix toys. Who else did you have in mind?”

Solomon stands from his seat. “Well, with me doing DMR, and you at rifleman, we’re probably all we NEED. But, these guys we’re up against aren’t some gansgter trash from a third world country. They are gonna be the real deal, so suppressive fire will sure as hell be useful. Cooper Hartmann is good for that, best guy on an M249 that I know. Another rifleman or point man wouldn’t hurt either, and Jonas Olson is pretty much an artist with a shotgun. Any more than that, and the money starts getting a little thin, but man, winning that tournament is a guaranteed cover spot on Soldier of Fortune. We’ll have clients all but knocking down our doors to get us on their gig. We could shoot right to the top if we do well here, Kowalski. We’d bring Impact! Solutions with us, too. It’s a real opportunity. One I think we could do really well with. Who do you think we should bring with?”

>Cooper Hartmann
>Jonas Olson

Alright guys, I was hoping to get a little further tonight, but I wasn't expecting to do a club scene. It's also 3 am and I'm running on about 4 hours of sleep since yesterday morning. I'm gonna get some sleep and let you guy sort this out, and I'll check back in after I sleep.

Thanks for playing, folks! I appreciate it! As always, feedback and criticism is welcome.

Referring to the fade-to-black sex scenes, I don't write smut for one simple reason: I'm awful at it. If some anon feels like he needs to do up a hotel room scene or what have you, be my guest.

New toys are great and all, but there's something to be said for a man who can stealth his way to taking down elk with just a knife.

Give him a few simulated grenades, and he might just take out the opposing team while we keep their attention.

>>
>>134140
I'd be iffy on his usefulness, such matchups don't play out like CoD, they are won by violence of force, fluid momentum and constant aggression, stealth has little to no bearing in specialized small unit cqb outside of the very first shot
>>
>>134178
Actually you make a good point. I was thinking he'd attempt to move around and flank them but realistically we know nothing about the layout and yeah beyond first contact his usefulness drops

Arne is a rifleman with a touch of grenadier
That's what I was trying for, with the lewd. Heavy hinting while still fading to black

>>
>>134365

“What kind of theater is it? That would probably affect squad composition.”

“Mostly urban with some ‘parks’ and similar things for open areas. Lots of apartment buildings with a few taller offices, and a handful of small one-story shops and homes. A lot of money went into this project, so they really want it to take off. They’ve invited some pretty big names, on top of doing the random drawing for the tournament entry.”

“Then yeah, I’d say a gunner and a door-kicker are useful. Arne would also be a pretty smart choice, the guy is good with a rifle and knows how to use grenades. More than that in a setting like that, though, and we’d start tripping over each other in the tighter confines.”

“That’s a fantastic point,” Solomon replies. “With that much cover, grenades will really shine. I’ll make the calls. The plane leaves for Dallas in four days. Let me know if you have any questions.

>Play out manually

>>Set a schedule and do a timeskip
Do a bit of group training in urban combat together so that we move effectively as a team. Also, if we can, read up on some of the obvious choices that we may run up against team wise. Although that might be a little difficult to predict
>>
>>134477
There are a handful of 'big names' invited that we'll get to later, but for the most part they're going to be relative nobodies that got in though the lottery, rather than invitation like you and Solomon.
>>
>>134465
>Set a schedule and do a timeskip
We need to make sure to set aside time to play with Casimir and make sure that he gets plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.

Also we need to do some team exercises with the tournament team.

Give Harris his money.

We should decide whether we're going to use our G36 or MP5 for the tournament; that'll determine which weapon we train with.
>>
>>134465
>>Set a schedule and do a timeskip
Play with casimir, give Harris his money, and do something with your room mate. And maybe train a little with them
>>
Alright, looks like you guys are doing a timeskip. Give me a rough schedule. The plane leaves on the fourth day, so you can sneak in three training sessions. Don't worry about weapons, they'll provide whatever you guys want, even if you don't own it. Simunitions, remember.

Looks like plenty of playing with Casimir and making sure you all work together well as a team. Do you guys want to do any specific weapon training?
>>
>>134513
Give Harris his money,
Play with Casimir
Do some exercises with the team
Do some training with the G36 (Do we want this rather than the mp5 vs better trained and probably more heavily armoured opponents?)
>>
>>134513
Work on your throwing arm. I know you aren't the grenadier, but a good arm could go a long way. For the actual schedule: Give harris his money, play with Casimir, do something with room mate, and train the rest of the time as a team.
>>
>>134513
Let's practice 2 sessions with the G36 on our aim, and then try to get better range/accuracy with our grenade-throwing since the urban environment we're going into will play to grenades.
>>
Okay, so we're doing a bit of rifle and a touch of grenades, and then doing team trainings. Got it. Writing
>>
The next four days whizz by in a rush of commotion. You set up a handful of training sessions through Tiffany, who seemed perfectly content being distracted texting away with someone.

You get pair of sessions in with the SEAL that does the rifle training, and you feel like he does a lot to help your handling of the weapons. You also talk to the SWAT instructor, who gives you a quick and dirty rundown on throwing grenades. It helps a lot, but the repeated throwing makes your ribs a little sore. You’re quite glad for the painkillers you got when you landed.

You’ve also taken to going on a morning run with Casimir, who really seems to enjoy the time. You play with him whenever you’re home, hoping to grow the bond between the two of you.

Solomon got the other three guys on board, and the five of you are spending a lot of time together, between the base kill-house and just general hanging out. Jonas and Cooper seem pretty excited for the chance to get some potential publicity, and Arne’s happy to test out some of the new, cutting edge tools that Combatix has been developing.

The plane to Dallas is basically a snap, considering your last trips have been to Panama and Jakarta, non-stop both ways. The plane touches down in Dallas, and the five of you make your way to the hotel that Combatix has booked for the people partaking in the event.

Making your way up to the hotel, the lobby was beautiful chaos. Reporters and editors all over the place, and even a few big names in the industry, like Colt Williams, who was happily chatting away with a group of reporters, who were taking both pictures and notes.

There were also plenty of contractors in the building, hoping to cash in on the same prize that you five were. You make your way up to your hotel rooms, and begin to lay out a game plan for the tournament.

Solomon lays a map out over a desk in one of the rooms, looking to be a 4-mile by 4-mile square of simulated urban environment. Combatix didn’t pull out any stops.

“Alright guys, you saw everyone down there. Colt Williams would be enough of a problem alone, but everyone down there was a professional, in one capacity or another. You saw the way they moved. We’ll need an actual strategy. There are a few basic ways to do it, though suggestions are always welcome. I could set up in a building as a sniper, and you guys could engage targets, and try to lead them into exposing themselves to my shots. We could have Cooper pin them down, and try to move around to flank them, or we could have Arne load up on the grenade, and shoot them like quail as they scatter from cover. Any comments?

>Ask a question
>Have Hyun snipe while you trick opposition into putting their backs to him
>Have Cooper pin down squads while the rest of you flank
>Have Arne flush them from cover, and shoot them as they run.
>>
Also, giving you guys a point in both Rifle skill and the newly created Grenade skill for your trainings.

“We’ll wanna keep these guys’ heads down as much as we can. Let’s have Cooper put rounds downrange to keep them busy, and the rest of us get in a position to take them out,” you say, and everyone nods in agreement. No one wants to be shot at by any of these guys very much.

Solomon folds up the map and puts it back in his bag. “Good, it’s a plan. We’ll have to stay flexible as the situations change, but this is a good way to start most engagements. Now, there’s a bit of a social mixer downstairs, and then the briefing tomorrow before we head out to the field tomorrow afternoon. I have no idea how long we’ll be out there, it could be a few days as lone wolves and stragglers get picked off. An early night may not be a bad idea. We could probably spend a while downstairs, though. I’m going to. You guys are adults. Make your own decisions.”

Go to scope out the competition, buy a few drinks for people, gather info. Don't drink though, hang out for a while and then head home.
>>
You decide to head down to the lounge, if for no other reason than to scope out the competition. You and Solomon get onto the elevator together, and start chatting.

“Think we have a chance? There are some big deals here for this,” you ask.

“The most talent isn’t going to win something this big. Teamwork will, so as long as we communicate like we should, and make smart choices, we have a real shot at this. The best plan will probably be to have Cooper keeping them in place, then have you and me go around one side while Jonas and Olafsson go around the other. Pincer maneuver, oldest trick in the book.”

He seems nervous. You are too, but you’re also excited. You’re going up against some of the biggest names in the industry. Colt Williams is here, for christs sake. The man is as close to a rockstar as a contractor can get, and he’s nearly single-handedly swayed public opinion in favor of private militaries. To think, you might get to shoot him!

You walk into the bar to find a handful of people mingling. Colt Williams is at the bar, beer in hand, talking to the bartender. There are a few pockets of teams around, and Solomon is tapping your arm, but you aren’t sure why.

You turn to Solomon, and find him focused solely on a woman in a blue dress.

“Everything okay, Hyun,” you ask, fairly sure where this is going.

“That’s Clara Baker. They got Clara Baker to come to this thing,” he said, his eyes never leaving the blonde woman. You have to admit, you’re having a hard time taking your eyes off of her, too.

“Solomon, who the flying fuck is Clara Baker,” you ask, trying to break him from his trance.

“Oh, you know, only the most decorated Olypmic sharp shooter in history. The woman outshoots Marine Recon and Navy SEAL snipers, dude. It’s insane. If she’s here, we’re really going to have to stay out of the open. I’m pretty good with a rifle, but I don’t have shit on her. She’s good enough to have two of us down before we even hear the first report.”

Well, that makes things interesting. Now, not only do you have to worry bout Williams running round with that damned Vector of his, every time you’re in view of an upper floor window might be the end of this little tournament for your team. Not to mention, it looks like she’s already got Solomon tied up somewhat. The man is looking so longingly, you’d might think he was a kid in a pet store window instead of a trained killer.
