A small asteroid crashed into a dark and isolated space. That asteroid emited waves of strange energy which mutated the local bug life into growing larger and slightly more inteligent. These beetles are about the size of a small dog. But the biggest egg is about to hatch after years of gestation. You are born in

Ok, a small cave it is.

You burst from your egg, slime running off of your blue-black shell. You are starving and need to feed your newly freed form. The lesser beetles scurry under your feet and could provide an easy meal, or the mushrooms growing from the walls if you prefer not to cannibalise your brethren.
>>
>>168285
Lesser beetles.
We shall show our superiority.
>>
>>168290
You use your spiked "arms" to spear your brothers and sisters, devouring them as you please. You finally feel sated after you have decimated half of your lesser family. No longer hungry, you are curious about the world outside this cave. You peek outside and see a large hill devoid of trees to your left, and a lake to your left with a herd of deer grazing around it. In front of you is just more forest. What do you do?
>Go deeper in the forest

What timing you have! Alright, You look around you at the forrest. To one side there are just trees, growing bigger and older the further out you go, seemingly forever. To another side, huge mauntains far in the distance. Lastly you see something much closer to you. A group of.. things, hacking down the trees. They are going to be getting closer to your cave, and you are not sure if these upright, two legged creatures will be friendly. What do you do?

You manage to follow them down a path, and about twenty minutes later they arrive at a camp, tents, a few log cabins, and cook fires dot the landscape. You estimate there are about twenty five of them. Way too many for you to just devour in head to head combat. What do you do?

When you are sure they are all asleep you try to sneak up to one on the outskirts and capture him. Your hunger leads you to be less careful and you kick a coffee pot next to a dying fire. It makes a loud clattering noise, and as you hear people start awake and start calling out you rush forward, crush the arm of the man staring at you in horror between your mandibles and scurry away as quickly as you can. Nobody sees you but the poor unfortunate you have dragged deep into the woods, who is too shocked and unconcious to scream for help. What do you do with him?

Sadly, not high enough for good luck bonuses, but still. You awaken stronger. Slightly larger. Most importantly, Smarter. You also know he mentioned spiders, and you aren't one. Perhaps you should meet with them? Or perhaps you should meat them? You :

About the size of a lounge chair. You can look a man on the eyes. Now you are slightly bigger and need to lean down just a little bit to stare a 5'11 man in the face. You are about 6'2 and 225 pounds.

You decide to go and get some energy, so you scuttle to the lake. You see a few deer still there enjoying the abundant water and greenery. You are not fast enough to catch them if they flee, but if you can sneak up to the one next to the forrests edge you could grab an easy meal. Otherwise you could drink some water or try and spear a fish.

You glorious mother fuckers! who did you bribe for these 90s because it sure wasn't me!
You have spent maybe an hour in the woods looking for signs. And then it hits you. in the head. When you look up to see what it was, you find a bone dry deer carcass hanging from a limb. You must be on the right track. You carefully work your way further in that direction, and as you go around a clump of briar bushes you see a giant spider webbing up a boar. it is busy and hasn't noticed you yet. it is slightly smaller than you, and looks much reedier but it is obviously venomous and you should approach with caution. If it is your wish, I will help you drive the kings men from this holy land!" Snot bubbles at his nose, and tear tracks on his cheeks, your first worshiper is rather.. shitty. But every Lord must start somewhere.
Now I ask you, What do You do? :

You command your new worshiper to go and gather others. There will be a hillbilly logger revolution and the kings forces shall be destroyed and driven out by the Cult of the Beetle Lord. You free him and set down to nap, suddenly feeling very tired as he runs into the distance. Roll me 2d100, first for the guy's ability to sneakily convince people to fight back and to bring you a snack/ Second to see what mutations you may earn. You have been working hard after all! You sleep out under the moon tonight, somehow feeling that the cave won't be working for you any more.

You wake. You hunger. You are now the size of a small family vehicle and are somewhere around 700 pounds. Your spikes are now the size of scimitars and Your shell has started to grow spikes on your front legs and on your spike arms. You feel strange inside, and it takes you a moment to figure out you have a large Third lung capable of holding enough air to keep you under water and without air for about 15 minutes. Your worshiper is making good progress but won't return till nightfall. It is good to be a Beetle Lord.

I am ending our quest here for now, need to food and shower and things. I hope everyone liked it and is wanting more later. Please give me any advice or complaints you may have so I can work on progressing. this is my first quest so I have lots to learn.

QM, do you have a twitter we can follow so we know when your running?
Otherwise it's pretty good desu.

Glad you guys liked it! I don't have a twitter yet, but I will make one. If somebody wouldn't mind archiving if they like it enough I would be grateful because I have no idea how to do it.
>>
>>170429
btw m8, when are you running again?
>>
>>170437
With any luck I will run tomorrow, though perhaps at a slower speed.

thanks for running OP, love games like these

will there be ways to focus our mutations? If we ate a rust monster, for example, could we gain it's rusting powers?
>>
>>170839
yay!
>>
>>170926
This is your QM saying that I will have to work out a system for that, but it would makr sense. You are still gaining your powers, so you will likely get better at it. I don't think you will be getting an awesome mutation every time you eat a thing, but sometimes it will happen for a super cool fight or fantastic role. This has been brought to you by insomnia, the sleep killer.

Resources are divided into two groups. Parts database and currency to purchase them. Unlocking parts/mutations come via thievery or evolutionary pressure. Kill a foe with a biological feature, and you'll unlock his parts. Endure long enough in a specific hostile environment, and receive a new mutation like Cold Resistance I: survive in a tundra long enough and at his discretion OP allows unlocking antifreeze glycoproteins, which are spread via bloodstream and latch onto ice crystals, preventing their growth and accumulating them in the spleen organ until they can be thawed. You're slow, but you don't freeze completely, or risk death. Upgrade II allows sweating an external coat of gylcoproteins so you stop giving any fucks at all.

The currency is accumulated over time via actions. Eat, win fights, reach objectives, get experimented upon, find a new type of terrain, survive near death experience, get currency to spend on your growing list of parts. Most parts cost roughly the same (some still more expensive than others) and the main global price inflation occurs each time you make a new purchase. This allows OP to constantly play with the prices to keep things balanced at his discretion, without long term commitments.

>>172139
I'm not sure we need a detailed system like that. It also doesn't really make sense to have a nonspecific currency where we could do a bunch of achievements, and then experience something unrelated once and immediately evolve it with the currency we saved up.

I think just getting upgrades when the OP decides our beetle has experienced enough to warrant a mutation is fine. Basically, we keep the part where we can get potential mutations from the creatures we meet and the conditions we endure, but we get them when we've done enough to "level up". And if we've experienced something enough to understand it to some degree, we can attempt to force our mutation in that direction.
>>
>>172139
I like this senpai.
>>
>>172249
Well, wouldn't call it nonspecific. It's xp/evolution points essentially, and not really different from what you described. OP can just write that you feel an urge to cocoon up, go take a nap, feel a change is coming, etc. From a story perspective not necessarily linked to the event we just completed, but from a technical point it is.

Not really detailed either. Just an updated list of mutations with a vague description and benefits, with an invented cost and evolution/xp points you get every now and then. If each item on the list at first costs 10-20 points, and you get 3-5 points per event, the second purchase could cost 30-40 on average. It's simple, fits the story, lets players choose, and most importantly easy to implement since OP doesn't commit to anything so no need for number sheets and worry about balance.
>>
>>172354
Eh, I would prefer if they costed less, or scaled for less.
>>
>>172363
Well, whole point is that numbers are pulled out of OP's ass with ease.
>>
>>172367
Well, I guess. What's the worst that could happen
>>
>>172354
By putting in actual numbers, you're limiting the OP's control over when evolution events happen by essentially saying "you have to have this many events happen before we evolve so we can afford the next upgrade" and "you can only have this many events happen because we will have enough to evolve after that".

And if everything costs about the same, how is that any different than just "level up, pick a mutation"?

If you want it so that the OP doesn't have to commit to anything, the simplest solution is to just let the OP decide when they want mutations to happen within the story instead of trying to force set mechanics onto it.
>>
When is OP back?
>>
>>173510
I think the OP should control when we mutate and stuff, but we should ultimately control WHAT we mutate into.
>>
>>173608
Well, yeah. We're already rolling to see if we get extra bonuses with our mutations, it's not much more to add in that we can also say what kind of base mutation we want to go for. OP probably would've already allowed that anyway if anybody had actually suggested something.
