/qst/ - Quests

The Legion, once a great force that shook the wasteland, has fallen. After the defeat at Hoover Dam and the death of Caesar, the 87 united tribes fell into chaos, quickly becoming little more than groups of slavers and warbands with no unity or code of honor. The NCR already spread too thin in the Mojave, did its best to secure its borders by quickly reinforcing the dam. Now able to defend against any would-be invaders that try to cross the Colorado River, the NCR turns its attention to New Vegas, where a mysterious courier going by the name of "Six" has declared New Vegas a independent state.

But that is none of your concern... at least for now.

You are a survivor, one that sees the fall of the old Legion as an opportunity to begin anew and to forge your own path using the skills the Legion has given you, because if there is one thing you know for certain.

It's that war... War never changes.

"Interesting. Perhaps this town is as full of profligates as we first believed."
>you wave over Rail to join the two of you.
"Thaddeus, this is Rail. He is new blood for the Legion. Its going to be your responsibility to train him into a proper Legion Recruit."
>"Ave, new blood. Gather what trifle and petty things you own and meet me at the Inn with the others."
>"sure thing. I'll be there in a flash man."
"Perhaps you might convince your followers to join us, however if they don't say yes the first time don't bother. The Legion accepts only those worthy of its time."
>Rail leaves the bar eager to get his worthless possessions and friends.
"what do you plan on doing with his things Thaddeus?"
>"the same thing we did with a small tribe from the edge of Zion. gather there wealth then make them burn it in the name of the Legion."

Go to the market and talk to a wide variety of traders, that should provide us with an indication of their value.

Also, see if our male slave has been sold. If he has, we might think about buying some new ones - either women to help with admin, or men to train into recruits.
>>
>>503396
Slaves will remain slaves, they are unworthy of joining let alone training the legion
>>
>>503413
While I would normally agree with you brother, our Legion is in a poor state. We will need many string soldiers to break the NCR.

If these profligate slaves display loyalty to the Legion and if they can survive the harsh training, then we should welcome them as recruits.

>the market seems to be the best place to find value for them
>stalls litter the streets selling everything from junk to jet
>the first one you approach has a young woman covered from heat to toes with dirt and grime
>around her stall is various odds and ends, likely whatever she could scavenge from abandoned buildings and caves
>she looks up from her bag of caps that she was counting as you stop at the stall
>she ties up the bag and places it under the counter and moves a homemade pistol of some sort onto it with her hand still on it
>"Legion Wannabe huh? What do you want? make it quick."
>shes a despicable cur, both in appearance and in attitude.
>you show her the collection of tags
"How much are these worth?"
>"NCR tags? Not sure, maybe.. four or five caps a piece? At least that's what I'll buy them for."
>you take note of her price and walk away without another word.
>you can hear the woman shout her disapproval of your sudden leave as you approach the next stall
>this next one is owned by a man who is likely as old as the dirt he walks on, with about the same for sale as the woman
>"W-what can I get fer ya?"
"Value. Value is what I am currently seeking. Specifically the value of these tags here."
>the man ponders the price for a moment.
>"Well I'm going to be honest with you son, to me these tags are worthless. Though I hear that most of the bigger businesses and shady individuals will take them as if you were handing them purified water by the gallon."
"have you dealt in tags previously old man?"
>he gives you a almost toothless grin
>"yeah, back when I first got here. If I were to give an estimated value of them to those individuals..."
>he scratches his chin, a few of his grey hairs falling out onto his stock as he does so.
>"Id say, maybe about 20 caps worth of value? It really depends on the hate they have for the Bear. But 20 is probably the average."
>you grip the tags tightly and place them around your neck again letting them jingle
"I thank you for the information. It has been of great value to the Legion."
>"now are you going to buy something?"
>just like the previous shop owner you turn away
>there is no further need to converse with them right now.

"Where are the slavers?"

>"out back, behind the Inn."

Make a mental note of the woman trader for when we capture the city. No profilgate insults a legionaire and gets away scot free.

Head to the slavers, hopefully we run into incontentius there.
>>

>>503530
The woman can make a slave when/if we take over.
Let's head to the slaver and see if we can find someone with an intense Bear hate. When we do, let's use our commanding presence and tales of Bear ineptitude and cowardice to gain a fervour and thereby increase the value of these tags.
We would do well to memorize the names and give a short story relating to the death of these dirty, filthy Rangers.
>>
Rolled 33 (1d100)

>>503604
Good idea. We could start with that speech, to attract both attention and favours, and then put our slave up for auction. Whoever spends more will get the slave which has served a man with more than 20 confirmed kills, all of NCR soldiers and rangers

>"Hail Decanus."
"Incontinentius, have you sold Fatue yet?"
>as you approach him he turns to look behind the Inn and motions for you to do the same
>when you finally look around the back you can see a group of men on guard around five poles with people tied to them
>one being Fatue
>"He hasn't been sold quite yet, but he is on display as being for sale. Apparently Scotchville has a few rules about slaving."
"and those are?"
>"you need to have your slave on display for at least half a day before it can be sold publicly."
>Incontinentius points to the other slaves, three men and a woman all tied tightly to a pole.
>"each of those slaves are able to be sold right now. while Fatue will still need to be left out in the sun to bake a while."
"any idea why they have this rule recruit?"
>"to weaken the slaves by starving them at least a day, and to let them know that those buying are the only ones to get them out of their bindings"
>interesting technique, but its incredibly basic.
>though you suppose it matches with the Inn.
"where are the sellers located?"
>"all around town. they are not required to stay here to sell, the guards up there do the selling and each take a cut for delivery... I refused to get to far away less the profligates take our wealth."

>"As the Legion code and law dictates, only men may fight and earn as anything other than a slave, the woman up there might prove a hassle to you. She is a gladiator from the Thorn that was found drunk on the street. the other men are farmers from a village not too far from here, and they are worth their wight in caps for someone looking to set up a plantation... or perhaps a farm for a garrison..."

>"the men I'll sell you for a nice and fair price. two hundred and fifty five caps each. The woman; if you want her, costs four hundred."
>the farmers are clearly overpriced, they are old and weak, likely given to the slaver in a tribute of some sort, or possibly just the ones too slow to get away.

The Thorn woman seems like a warrior. It may not be liked, but in terms of true value, she is most profitable.

>>
>>504355
I think this one is special. Plus, more numbers in the take over can help. I am sure he will want to take his revenge on Slaver after we take over. Plus, we will get back those lost caps. And more. A small investment for a high return.
>>
>>504401
I'm doubtful a violent slave is going to take well to being a slave for us instead. But I'll go with majority decision.

"interesting offer. But no. Your slaves are not worth the price you are selling them for. And lying to Legionnaires that you 'respect' so highly is not going to make your offer more temping."
>Incontinentius stares down Slaver as his hand starts reaching for his revolver.
>"Lying to Legion? I- I would never-"
"and here you do it again. From what I can tell this town respects those with strength and the ability to kill NCR far more than those who rip them off with slaves."
>you motion the the Sequoia on your belt, a clear winner in the stand off against his deathclaw gauntlet.
>he notices, and he notices Incontinentius' own steel ready in his hand.
>"Lets be reasonable about this... What can I do to make this right?"
"the man at the end of the line. He isn't a farmer, though you are selling him as one."
>"yeah so? I needed him gone, you can see the way he is looking at me yeah? Why would I keep that around?"
>you take a step closer to Slaver your Sequoia now in your hand and pressed against his gut
"lets talk price..."
>you can see the sweat forming on his brow, the dirt and grime there getting slightly washed off as it drips.
>the Slaver looks at your tags.
>"I'll- I'll sell him for tags then! just five! I need something from this, and five tags can get me a lot in this town."
"and how long have you been selling and buying from the Legion with your 'fair' prices?"
>he sweats even more.
>"Heh.. heh.. okay, you've made a good point. three tags and you never see me again. Deal?"
>your eyes pierce his own like daggers and you stay silent for a long time.
>then you pull your revolver away with a wide grin.
"that's how you negotiate Slaver. I hope you took notes."
>you pat his shoulder and take the tags off your neck removing three of them.
(you now have 19 NCR tags left.)
"Deal..."
>Slaver raises his arm to the guards
>"that one! with the scars! these men just bought him."
>they nod and remove his bindings before bringing him over to you.
>Slaver takes off to the other side of the slave market as his slave watches him run off.

Nobody cheats the Legion.

Walk over to the new slave and hand him our boot knife. Introduce ourselves and tell him he has two options. He can die here, be worked as our slave, or he can prove himself worth the Legion and go kill that slaver before he escapes town.

Order incontentius to follow him if he accepts the challenge, and shoot him if he tries to escape.

"You cost me three NCR tags, a large sum for a single slave."
>the slave turns to you and looks over your armor from top to bottom
>"You have an eye for quality at the very least... Veteran."
>Incontinentius speaks
>"It's Decanus. Show respect."
>He knows of your previous rank just from looking at your armor?
>interesting.
>you reach down and take the blade from your boot and hold it out to the slave.
"and you know about Legion rank. So I can assume you know how brutal we can be to slaves."
>"indeed I do, Decanus."
"then you have two choices. Either take this blade and kill your previous master, or work till death in service of the Legion."
>the slave smiles and takes the blade gripping it tightly in his hand
>"then I shall serve Caesar and his Legion once more, Decanus."
"once he is dead, we will claim the right of his stock. once you see my recruit here-"
>you place your hand on Incontinentius' shoulder
"bribe the guards, you strike. Then return to me, understood?"
>the slave nods
>"Ave, true to Caesar"
>then he rushes off into the crowd doing his best to blend in as he hunts down his prey.
>"That slave was clearly a Legionnaire Decanus..."
"Its a shame he let himself be dishonored in front of us. Whatever rank he once held, he knows he has lost it."
>"are you sure he will return?"
>you turn to Incontinentius and take a couple of tags off the necklace holding them out
"don't you have a guard or two to bribe?"
>"yes Decanus, as you ask."
>Incontinentius takes the tags and begins his walk over to the guards just as Aetius and Thaddeus return to you with Rail and his things.
"hold off on Rails training for a moment recruits... He should first see what true loyalty to the Legion is."

"he has been cheating the Legion... Rail.. take note on what a mere slave is willing to do to join our ranks."
>"What do you mean?"
>you don't answer and instead let everything play out from your position here near the Inn.
>the guards turn back away from Incontinentius and stand where they did and nod in your direction.
>Incontinentius walks back to you silently and once he arrives the guards turn around and face the slaves.
>then there is a scream from the crowd.
>you all look over to where it came from and you can see your slave carving into the slavers neck
>Rail looks mortified for a minute but begins to take interest in what he is watching once he notices you watching emotionless
>the slave stabs into his targets neck over and over, each time a spray of blood squirting out.
>the crowd backs away from the sight making a large empty area, but nobody acts, clearly noticing that the guards are doing the same.
>to them, its probably someone who messed with Scotch and needed a lesson.
>that is until the slave carves a large X into the slavers chest and stands up covered in his blood.
>"Profligates will render unto Caesar all that belongs to Caesar!"
>subtle...
>its gets even less subtle when you hear Aetius shout from beside you
>"Ave True to Caesar!"
