Welcome to A Song of Storm Throughout the Centuries: House Deschain Quest. Unlike most A Song of Ice and Fire Quests, this one won't take place (hopefully) in any single point in time. but throughout the course of Westros History starting with the reign of Aegon the Unlikely to the War of Five Kings. During it you will guide both your chart the fortunes of your House and perhaps the Seven Kingdoms.

House Deschain is a premade house located in the middle of Dornish Marches. At the beginning of this quest, an uneasy and unpopular peace has been forced on the Marcher Lords by the deceased King Baelor Targaryen, one championed by Prince Daeron II but also being plotted to be brought to an end by King Aegon IV. You will be starting as Ser Wil Deschain, having just earned his knighthood and is attending a tourney organized by King Aegon the IV. Having arrived at King's Landing, Wil has learned of his father's and brothers' deaths, and of course rumors and gossip about King Aegon, the court, and the Aegon's scandals have begun to reach Wil's ears.

Wil has been invited to the private booth of Prince Daeron the II and the agreed to let Princess Mariah Martell attend your father's funeral.

If you’ve played the one of the dozens ASoIaF Quests you know the drill. I will be using the Game of Thrones version, as well as a few of the expansions like OOSP and a few house rules which started in other Quests and to be continued with my own eventually. Any questions or concerns on how things are being done, feel free to bring up. This is my first Quest and I'm learning the ropes as well.

Prince Daeron looked at you, and as he did Aemon's eyes darted ever so slightly towards you.

“Tell me my lord, what stories have you heard about my lord father?”

“Just gossip my grace, nothing fit for a proper company. The usual scandals most lords are forced to bear, bawdy tales more fit for peasants and foreigners looking to pass the time without having to worry about decorum. I know that he is my king and your father my Prince.” You say turning your attention back to the Squire's Melee.

A blunted sword and been caught underneath someone's helm, the thunderous sound of it breaking into two almost drowned out the sound of the cheer of the crowd and Daeron's resigned sigh. But the crowd was riled up and your attention was a little too focused on the Prince to ignore either the tired, sad look on his face or the unease he oozed out.

“Lord Deschain, you can spare me etiquette here. My pavilion is private, everyone here is allowed to speak honestly and frankly. These are my closest friends and trusted guests.” Prince Daeron said, once again facing you.

“Your grace, it's likely is being completely honest and not just courteous. The boy spent his entire time either at Fatebound or in the Riverlands.” Lord Tristan Selmy said, his pale blue eyes fixing on yours and then the Prince's own dark purple eyes. “I believe this is even his first time in King's Landing, let alone as an adult”

A.) Admit while it's just rumors, you are aware of the accusations of rapid promiscuity and corruption.

B.) Ask Prince Daeron if the rumors are true.

C.) Try to get out of this conversation (Roll Persuasion)

“I've heard the stories my grace. I've heard that he is a lecher and corrupt. That he showers those who indulge his vices with praise, titles, incomes, and land. Though as far as I know they are just stories. Words are wind.” You say, the sound of the melee melting away.

“A cute saying, especially from one from the Stormlands. You of all people should know, wind can tear down castle walls and devastate entire villages.” Mariah said, her dark eyes turning towards you.

“The stories are true, all of them. For every bastard my father has the decency to recognize there are two dozen he refuses to acknowledge. If your father had been lost to pure accident, and not to my father's folly, your lands and castle might fall to an uncle or a friend of his at court who has the coin and is willing to part with a daughter's maidenhead or a wife's bed to share for a night or so.” Daeron II began.

“My father might be a king, but he is also a slave. To lust, to greed, and just to whatever impulse that runs through his head. He is surrounded by yes men, flatters, jackenapes and the ambitious. They gift him whatever his appetite is that day, feed his delusions, or offer heaping after heaping after heaping of empty praise. Besides women, wine, coin, or boasts though, he desires one thing above all else. Glory. Do not think he sheds tears for your father or any others lost in his vain pursuit of it with his failed Dornish invasion. Those who want the lands, incomes, or even just to settle blood debts with Dorne whisper sweet words in his ear, and by this summer or next spring he'll be reading for another attempt. King Baelor the Blessed forged the first real peace between us and Dorne, offering a way to make the Seven Kingdoms truly whole, and Aegon is determined to end it so they be called 'the conquer' or 'the mighty' next to regnal number in the history books.”

Lord Tristan Selmy and Lord Jason Tarly turned towards you. And you notice nearly everyone here was facing you or your sister, out side of Lord Malroy who cheered hearitly for his boys.

“Us Marcher Lords will be in the midst of a great poltical upheval by the time you return home” Lord Tristan began

“And the surest port in a storm, is a friend, as they say” Lord Tarly continue, his eyes clear white, even with his cheeks a deep red.

Thank you, yeah.
>>
“And what my lords would this friendship entail?” You ask. Your father might have wanted war with Dorne, but it was becoming clearer and clearer that it wasn't the type of war King Aegon was planning to wage. While he respected the Martells and some of the other lords, he had many a sleepless nights worrying that the Wyls or others would break their word, using a border skirmish, a tax dispute, or even a renegade outlaw as pretext for more blood letting. The singers might fatten their purse on their tales of Roland Deschain's battle prowess, but outside the lists he despised fighting. Killing a man for justice or honor was one thing, but vainglory was another all together.

However, what they could be plotting might be treason. Your family name might be marked by a history of villainy and treachery, but that was something your father and you were determined to leave to the dusty half forgotten tomes of the maesters. The Deschains were men of honor now. You must keep it that way.

Tristan Selmy's pale blue eyes locked onto yours, and his age started becoming more apparent. The crow's feet were the only wrinkles on the man's tanned smooth squared face, but the weight behind them somehow gave it away.

“Most of the macher lords were looking for an opportunity for war before this, and that won't change now. Far from it. But there have always been doubts, and those are going to multiply with King Aegon on the throne, or as they bury their sons, fathers, or brothers. After Baelor's reign some of them are now kin one way or another to the Dornish lords. Many are, to be frank, going to take their seats as suddenly and unprepared as you. Their hold will be shakey and they'll need friends, and maybe even brothers or sons. Offer them your arms and aide in return for theirs. Marry their daughters, or even offer your sister's hand to make them the truest of allies, family. For the usual prices ofcourse but also as for a promise to advise either the Tyrell's or the Baratheon's to oppose any efforts by the king to try and renew tensions between us and Dorne again. If enough of us in the Dornish Marshes oppose any future war Aegon pushes, there won't be one.”

> A.) Try to change the subject without offense (roll persuasion)

> B.) Refuse to get involved.

>C.) Offer a non committal agreement.

>D.) Agree

>>D.) Agree
But before saying that, ask about the Dondarions, Swanns and Carron. Are they okay with that or are we the first House they approached? Same with the Reach side, sure they got House Tarly but those other Houses that oppose the Dornish, and the Stormlanders at times, what about them?
>Though House Peake is the only other House in the Reach who has been confirmed in the Marches.
>>
“What of House Swann, Dondarion and Carron? Are they among your 'friends' my lords? Or was I the among the first you approached?” You ask. What they were planning was far from treason, though it seemed it would be enough to squash Aegon's ambitions. For an army you need swords and men, a united effort to deprive him of it to stop it sense was extremely plain. Little risk but much reward. Still, it was always best to minimize it and understand who you were getting into bed with.

“A prudent question. Lord Garrion Donarion was approached first, his title means much even if it is a mere empty honor at this point. He offered honied words for us, but it he made it clear he wanted blood for blood more than ever. He lost five sons in my father's debacle. Why escapes me, House Martell didn't call upon those ships to sail or for storm that sunk them. Though at sixty and six, his wife even older, and his heir a nephew that squired for my dear Uncle Aemon, it's the future Lord Gerris Donarion that concerns me. He privately agrees a new war with Dorne would be foolish, but fears alienating my father or the other marcher lords until his uncle passes and his inheritance is safe. Tywald Swann openly spat on my offer, and quite frankly is the one of the lords who will oppose me the most. Prior to this, he was a fourth son much like yourself, and was to be a just a knight with incomes and position in his brother Roland's household. Now he would be set to inherit everything, except one of his brothers, Balon, was one of the few survivors. Dear Balon is being kept hostage to help ensure House Swann's fidelity by my future brother in law, but I fear he's ensured the opposite. While Tywald will rule in his brother's name until he is released, by ensuring there is a war he would guarantee he never would be. Even when Balon is released, I doubt he will look back upon Dorne fondly. Lady Cassana Caron rules House Caron now until her eldest son reaches manhood, and quite frankly is up for the highest bidder. Not that I blame her, uncles and nephews are nicking at her heels and do have good claims.” Prince Targaryen said, taking a sip of water. “Your friends at House Casval of course want to bathe in Dornish blood at any opportunity and would do so on the double if you meant adding your flesh as soap.”

Lord Tarley interpreted “Aye, Peake and Wyldflowers are no better. Lord Wyldflower lost a brother whom he loved dearly and has always been quick to find blame others for his misfortune. Lord Peake lost no one, but thinks to expand his coffers and lands in the long run.”

Your sister offers a nervous smile and is about to say something, when you speak up. You were tired of this dance. Everything you heard the today and yesterday was argument enough in the wisdom of this.
>>
“I'm your man Prince.” You say, looking back at your untouched cup of wine. A long elegant, but needly expensive and gold thing. Dornish Red rippling inside thanks the frantic nature of the melee outside. It seemed Daeron Targaryen was offering whatever he could as proof that peace was worth it. You took a long sip, and offer a rueful smile. It wasn't the best reason, but it wasn't half bad.

Tarley grabbed his own cup , laughing as he took a long swig. Mariah, Daeron, Brienne, Erik, and Malroy joined soon afterwards with Selmy and Aemon joining in only after everyone had finished their first cups. Small talk and even some laughter followed, more and more of the laughter as the drinks flowed. It wasn't until Malroy's grandson was unseated by some big Manderly brat that the drinks stopped.

“Lord Deschain...no Wil, may I ask will you be in the Lists tomorrow?” Mariah asked, smiling. Her cheeks were flushed a brilliant red on her deep dark cheeks. Nearly everyone's face was red, but it was a curious color on her.

“Nay, I wanted no part of farce from the beginning. If it weren't for my squire I would have just meet the king, received a writ clarifying my rights, and take my leave.” You say, motioning for a cup of water.

“You might want to rethink that. While I would be glad to draft up such a letter for you, my father needs more than blunt courtesy to do even a minor favor or duty to anyone. Oh, he'd never dream of stripping you of anything, after all that's happened it'd be too blatant and shameful even for him, but he'd just promise he'd send a raven after more pressing court business was done, tell a half decent jape, and see you off.” Daeron said, twirling the cup. “And it might be best you keep our...friendship discreet. Many hope to flatter my father through me, so he would never hold this meeting between us against you, my lord. However, if you ask me to ask me even this small favor, he'd take it as you going over his head and subverting his authority. He'd never want to look weak, so he'd make to ensure to enforce it in full, but any future favor you'd ask of him would be soured.”

“He'll want to meet with you briefly during the dinner after the first day of the jousts too, if you don't feel like participating, just agree to join him at his table and to one of his after dinner parties. Treat him that night to whore, and you'll get your letter and his favor” Tarly said, still drinking and somehow not slurring his words.

“Or you can just stand by your honor, and not have each foot on each side like Tarly here” Selmy said, with a sudden note of sourness in his voice

>Lord Garin Malroy loved his children equally, including his baseborn first, it was often rumored the Lord Malroy had turned his forces away from Dorne, and thus sparing them from the rebellions thereafter, for the love he had found in Remy’s mother, a bastard herself of House Ladybright, the love she bore him conversely sending him away to safety at the cost of her own life, or so the song went. A rumor that continued to be fueled by his attending of Prince Daeron Targaryen in the years that would follow and despite his renown as a martial Lord as many of the Malroys before him his ardent support of peace with the Dornish rather than the war King Aegon the Unworthy desired. A stance the Knight of Blackbridge Tower, Ser Mors Malroy and later his son Gerald Malroy would go on to resent seeding the schism that would be soon to come. An unlikely early ally among the Valyrian Houses, Lord Garin in his elder years spent most of his time at court, leaving the House to his son Ser Alliser Malroy, when Daeron would ascend to the throne as King Daeron II Targaryen in 184AC and would serve as his Master of Law, and was ordered to mete out justice left undone by the King’s late father, upon the Small Council until his death in 187AC of a wasting sickness. His children would remember him as a great man of prowess and honor, a dedication to serving his King and the Realm, “Either upon my horse’s back with blade in hand as I did the First, or upon the Council with a quill and decree as with the Second,” as he was so often fond of saying. Though conversely by the other branch of the Malroy line as a traitor to the family's history and tradition, and a man easily swayed by title and position rather than ideals.

He's just another Brynden Malroy really. Loves his bastard too much.

“I'll not humor this mummer's farce of a tourney, but at the Twins I learned no lord can avoid flattery and courtesy sadly. Looks like we're staying tomorrow for dinner” You say, turning to Brienne and Daeron Frey.

“Good. I'll see if Lord Mallister will extend the same courtesy he was kind enough to give to you. I won't be attending, for the Seven's sake, don't take the Frey boy.” Brienne says, hand on her forehead. It was extremely likely she would need help walking to Mallister townhouse. She might have devolped a taste for the grape but she had no tolerance for it.

“Funny coming you. How many taverns and pretty singers did father have to tear you away from?” You ask, forgetting for a short moment your future king was only a few feet from you and now grinning broadly despite himself.

“I never slept them, and there is a difference between liking to have a good time and being a wastrel.” Brienne said, before glancing over to the Prince. “Your grace, I apologize to you for my brother's behavior...”

“Hah, If you think Daeron is going to be scanadlized this, our dear friend Jason would have been thrown out of King's Landing the moment he told the story about the stables” Lord Malroy said, grabbing a small handful of berries and slowly placing him in his mouth, as Lord Jason Tarly and the Targaryens let out of a low roar of laughter. Even Selmy offered a small smile, though he did not go as far to laugh like the others.

Small talk resumed, along with Mariah and Daeron informing you of when the Joust would begin and when the King would be beginning the feast and what to say to the guards to avoid any hassle when joining King Aegon.

Aemon was left with the uncomfortable task of informing you of what brothels and wine sinks were safe and clean, how to signal to the Kingsguard that the king had enough and escort him back the palace without offending him or drawing overt attention to yourself, and what common tricks and cons the King would fall for or at least play along with and how to avoid being entangled. It seemed there were a seamstress and a sailor the King had impregnated, who were not only being amply compensated but were going to have their bastards acknowledged, whom constantly demanded more and you were to disengage with at all costs.
>>
Mariah Targaryen was left with somehow less stressful discussion of manner of your father's funeral and her travel arrangements. She, quite politely and subtly, demanded that both you travel with her, since you were staying for at least the first day of the tourney anyway and that you sail by boat by her coin. While it was mostly for safety reasons, it was also for expediency. While she wanted to offer her fond farewells and final respects, you were a lord now and she was to be queen in the future, a Dornish Princess spending more than a couple of nights at Fatebound would do more to annoy the marcher lords than honor your father.

By the time both banter and discussion ended, Lord Bracken was offering the boy a large purse of dragons and as a Septon was lighting candles at a small well designed, but still make shift shrine off the other side of the dusty melee mound. It was becoming quite in fashion to anoint the winner and runner ups of Squire's Jousts and Melee's like this. The King had no doubt played a small role in it when he knighted Daemon Blackfyre after winning another one like this at King's Landing when the brat was but twelve.
>>
It's late, so the second part of this thread will continue tomorrow in the later afternoon.

#4 will start on Sat or Sun. Hopefully we'll reach Fatebound by then and into the main crux of the conflict.
>>
Also please mentally erase the name Daemon Blackfyre there. That was massive fuck up, got my dates majorly wrong.

>>
Brienne, Daeron Frey, Ser Erik made your way to Lord Jon Mallister's townhouse, after it reaches a point in the victory celebrations, where it becomes polite to ditch them. Lord Bracken was beginning just started wheeling out lemon pies, powdered pasties, and Arbor Gold to properly start a new round of drunken revelry. You had enough and especially of this. Tomorrow it was to begin anew yet again, seeing the silver eagle meant at least for today it was at an end.

While Mallister's servants let you in immediately and were quick to offer hospitality, it was clear they were becoming increasingly tense as the hours continued. They drew baths, prepared clothes and even dressed those who asked for the assistance, but they continued to ask a single question you didn't know the answer to “When you believe Lord Mallister will return?”

You never lie and try to relay what Prince Daeron put in the politest terms possible but they don't seem willing to take the hint. The idea that a King Aegon would string and drag his heels on such a simple task and not at least delegate it is a little too absurd for them to comprehend. It's only when the Frey boy and Ser Erik retire to their chambers that Jon returns, his normally nearly perpetually annoyed but calm face now locked into a look of quiet but plain rage.

“Ser Jon, your meeting with the King went well?” You ask, taking one final sip of goat's milk from an almost plain wooden cup, if not for the solid silver embroiled on it. You hated the stuff, but it sailors said it was good at starving off a hangover.

“Do not make a jape about this Wil, I've had enough of mummery for one day.” He said, throwing off a leather coat and the silk vest underneath it, while brushing off the servants who would normally do that for him. “The arrogance. The sloth. The disrespect. ” Each sentence came out as a curse.

“You can stay here if you want, as long you as desire. As for me, I leave for home as soon as the sunrises and leaving this forsaken city behind me.”

“What exactly happened?” You ask, you have an idea where this going but you were always better with the mace than diplomacy games.

“Well Wil, first I waited at the court excepting either the king or Hand to attend, as has been custom since Aegon the Conqueror was crowned king. That appears to have been a mistake. I waited for hours before trying the tourney only to be rebuffed by the Hand who was busy too knighting spoiled brats and being curried with favor by their rich fathers.” Jon said, motioning for the servants finally as they helped on with a simple flowing brown robe, that did look more than a little comfortable. “Of course the King was detained due to a supposed illness. Still I tried to find a different angle to solve this, and went to find the residence of Master of Laws, Mace Redwyne. Another error. The man is a senile, thinking me my grandfather and the king he's serving Baelor. Not too much of a surprise the man is eighty and four.”

“Why would he…?” You begin.

“A position his granddaughter bribed his way into no doubt, she now outright rules Arbor even in name. I am fool. My uncles and cousins are fair men. Men of honor, for the most part at least. They'll want title and position in return for not making it a fuss, but it's a much smaller price to pay than this.”

“Well, please consider this repayment for the generosity you've shown me Jon, I can get you that Writ tomorrow night.” You said, stretching as you say so. You try to hide your grin, but quite frankly you doubt you managed it.

“You? A master of the game? Hah. Your a splendid knight Wil, but I've never seen you as the courier type.” Jon said, grabbing a bottle of wine from the counter, opening it, and taking a seat. It seemed he was interested despite his pretense of disbelief.

“The King will be arranging a dinner party after the first night of jousting. We, and the other lords who lost loved ones in the war, will be the guests of honor.” You start.

“Great that means...”

“Nothing but flattery and well wishes on it's own. The King is either too greedy or corrupt or simply to even write a letter without an intrinsic benefit for him. Luckily, the Prince recommended courses of actions so our inheritances don't suffer even the most minor of wrinkles.” You say, the look on Jon's face clearly taking on mixed feelings.

“It seems you are playing the Game. I thought you wanted no part of this dishonorable farce, like me?” Jon said, rubbing his eyes.

“That was before I knew the stakes. And I'm not playing for fun, I want to survive.”

“Tell me, are you willing to rent out a winehole for a night?” You ask, grabbing his bottle of wine, and closing it back up. “Trust me, you'll be drinking enough tomorrow night for a lifetime.”

“And why would I be paying for this? I didn't formulate this plan, I can always just ride home. None of my neighbors want to lose the trade or protection Seaguard brings, especially with the efficiency I did at as under my Uncle.” Jon said, eyes darting between you and the wine. His face screwed up, his light brown hair and prominent forehead making him look even more old fisherwife trying to carry out a better haggle by pretending to be uninterested.

You had him by the balls though, and by tomorrow night he'd thank you for it.

“Absolutely. Will you be appoint the one uncle in his who is sixty and something to the Captain of town watch? Will your sea sick, illiterate cousin be made Master of Harbor?” You ask, no doubt the grin getting the better of you at this point. “Very generous of you. I've always known you to be a family man after all.” Pulling out a parchment, that Aemon quickly jotted down on. A fine royal, red and gold seal was on it, no doubt the king wouldn't care at all though. Maybe he'd be proud his soon was offering a bribe in the long run. “Here is the approved list of brothels and winesinks that are judged safe by a deep personal friend in the Kingsguard. The brothels can be expensive and breed rumors, so this really the best offer I can give you.”

“Go fuck your self my lord” Lord Jon Mallister said taking the parchment, his customary frown returning to face. “Maybe you aren't all jousts and melees after all, you might be a half decent lord yet”

He started hammering out fine details and barking orders to servants and valets, you having completely settled in yourself into your chair. For whatever reason, perhaps your inexperience in this, you thought this would have ended with bargaining with Lord Mallister.
