Welcome to A Song of Revenge and Gold: House Malroy Quest. In which you take the reins of a House of storied glorious past since Aegon’s Conquering, but whose fortunes have taken a turn for the worse in the doom that Robert’s Rebellion brought. You are Brynden Malroy, second son to Lord Vamos Malroy and Lady Esemella Hayford and the last living heir to Steadhold and House Malroy. The year is 285AC, two years after the Rebellion and a year after your return to Westeros.

House Malroy is a pre-genned House designed around the idea of a story within the Crownlands of a House fiercely loyal to the Targaryens and their attempts to live in this new world after Robert’s Rebellion. Lord Brynden Malroy is as well pre-genned but will take direction from the players in his ways and how he develops himself further. This Quest will be moderately more story driven than others of its kind, but the development of the House and her lands will take just as much importance.

If you’ve played one of the many Quests within the ASoIaF setting the rules of the SIFRP system should be known. I will be using the Game of Thrones edition, as well as a few of the expansions namely OOSP and a few house rules which will be explained as we come to them. If you have questions about how things work or why certain actions are taken I can explain them as we go along. In truth this is a learning experience for me as well.

[Early Month IV, 285AC]

“The First is looking good Captain. Strong.”

“Shield up, Marcus,” Rafe Roper says by your side as the two of you pass by during morning drills, “Thank you Ser Mason, still a few stranglers, aye. Mostly the refugees we took in from the Outer Ring, Bernard there is a bleedin’ beanpole under the hauberk, but we’ll have her up to full strength within the month. Promise you that Ser.”

You pause a moment, watching the greater view of the yard, nodding along to Captain Rafe’s words in silent reflection. Steadhold had felt empty the past few weeks, but far more tense than it had been since your arrival in Westeros. With Steadhold’s standing at home nearly at half, the rest spread between the Princewood and in Highgarden, and those lingering ‘bandit encampments’ upon the borders both the castle and her people were on edge. Ser Dontos had been able to send little aid from Blacksaithe, fearing marching an army east would be an open invitation for attack, though Ser Raymun Chelsted, his lady wife’s younger brother, had sent his eldest son Ser Jaromir Chelsted and a handful of Knights in the night. A small force, but those suits of armor and horse were worth far more than those footed men armored in leather. You were thankful to the Seven Brynden had seen fit to get the First back up to a respectable fighting force, but still worried for the lean state of the army.

“Mas,” you hear a voice call and turn, to see the easy smile of Ser Victor Haigh, or at least the face of where that smile usually lie today replaced with a frown, his squire Lorry following quickly after.

“Yes Ser Victor?”

He inclines his head, his face a touch red from the brisk walk from the castle to the yard beneath, “Captain Rafe, good that you are here as well. Mas, we’ve received word from Brynden, Ser Wat Waters rode in this morning, Acoylte Ashby has been with him since. Lady Obella is calling the small and war councils together. She was insistent it be done immediately and… She did not seem pleased.”

Rafe exchanges a look with yourself, one of concern and dread, “Victor, gather Vargar, Danse and Jonos. Quickly.”

Victor nods off quickly, flicking his hand to Lorry who runs off opposite of him.

“Have the First finish drills and come to the Great Hall, Captain. I will see to her Ladyship in the meanwhile.”

“Yes Ser.”

---

Your eyes watch carefully as Lady Obella Qorgyle paces back and forth, her daughter ever fussy close to her breast. Acolyte Ashby, Lady Amarei Fowler, and Ser Wat Waters stand behind her, waiting as you are for word. Gawen and your own dearest Lady Eliowny sit at the council table, the former going over a few figures with Steadhold’s Stewardess while her Lady calmed herself.

“He knows I do not trust the Hand, Ser Mason,” she says suddenly, hardly stopping her pacing.

“Aye my lady. He does.”

“And I am wise enough to know he does not do this to spite me, but for the better of Steadhold. But I do not like this.”

“Like what milady?” Vargar Sorrios asks from behind you in his harsh tone underlined by the hint of alcohol that always sat upon his lips, a Reachwoman would never allow such a man about you think privately, he was lucky Brynden kept more southron company. The other Captains, ‘Dusky’ Danse, Rafe Roper, and Jonos Stroumen follow after joined by Ser Jaromir Chelsted and Ser Halden Rambton, taking their seats about the table while Vargar yet stood, staring with arms crossed.

“Captain, sit,” you state firmly, allowing the creak and clatter of your plate to echo as you turned to face him.

“Not til I learn what Brynden gots for us. Not liking this tone Flowers, sounds like more putzing about with our thumb’s up our asses.”

Brynden would have a smart remark you think, wit and charm to disarm Vargar and his drunken word. Not you, rather, you stare at the Essosi with a stern eyes, taking a step down from the dial in the deafening quiet of the Great Hall. “You will sit Captain. And watch your own tone in front of her Ladyship.”

Vargar peaks about your body and cracks his jaw, giving you a fair sight of his ruin of a mouth, red with sourleaf, brown from lack of care. He draws in, word nearly escaping lip before her voice interrupts.

“Captain Vargar.. I bid you sit, please.”

“You’re lucky Flowers,” he growls at you pushing by to take his seat.

You turn and look up the dial, everyone else seated just so, watching you, Lady Obella gives her daughter to Lady Fowler, who coos and hums a sweet tune as she walks off and you can see the weight of Steadhold and House Malroy again bear down upon her Ladyship’s shoulders.

“I am worried Ser Mason. For my daughter, for my husband, for this House.”

“As am I my Lady. But Brynden- Lord Brynden has purpose behind this decision. Acolyte Ashby, if you’d be so kind?”

“Oh! Yes Ser Mason, um... “ He fiddles about with the scrolls in his hands, reaching the smallest piece of paper Ser Wat had delivered to him this morning, “To summarize, my Lady, Sers, Captains, and other estemed members of the Council. It is Lord Brynden Malroy’s decision to involve the Hand of the King, Lord Jon Arryn, and the interim Master-of-Law Saul Cromwell in the current plight of House Malroy and by extension House Chelsted. It is his hope that the Hand and Master Saul will be able to defuse this situation peacefully dispersing these bandits and/or provide the necessary reinforcements and aid to Steadhold should it escalate to armed conflict.”

“FUCKIN’ BULLSHIT!” you hear first, the rest of the War Council members going into an uproar immediately after, “Inaction is weakness! We can’t fuckin’ hide behind walls half fuckin’ crumbled to dust!”

Lady Obella for her part remains poised, though you catch the slight hint of a flinch to their anger. You could tell in some small part she shared it. Did Brynden rely too heavily upon the Crown here? It was not for you to say, it was not your part. But her eyes sudden glance for help.

“ENOUGH,” you call, bringing the War Council to order, “It is not our place to question our Lord’s decisions Captains. You are to serve him, not judge him is this understood?”

“Yes Ser Mason,” you gain weakly from the muttering and discontent group.

“I think it is the proper course of action,” Ashby interjects, “If I may madam, Ser. House Malroy simply does not have the arms nor forces to deal with a two, possibly three front war. Regardless of their nature as bandits or otherwise.”

“Have to agree with the young Maester, aye,” Gawen says, “My horses are fast, it be true, but not so much to ride up and down the God’s Eye River and the Rush like Ser Aeson’s did. Too few, not enough sons to boot.”

Obella raises her hand, seeing the Small Council’s words are close to rousing the ire of the War Council once more, “Ser Mason. Your thoughts?”

“We’ve to worry about the people my Lady. Once word spreads that we wait upon the Crown for aid and decision while we sit behind half repaired walls upon our hands they will begin to fret further. You and I both know well and good discontent is spreading in the Outer Ring. I fear what such news will bring.”

“I am in agreeance Ser Mason,” she responds, waving Ashby over to hand her a scroll of no short length, “I am not a woman of inaction. But I am loyal to my husband’s words. I shant raise a finger as he wishes. We will prepare for siege if it comes to it Captains. Your men will need be drilled and ready to defend Steadhold, the gates will need to be re-enforced, ditches dug, pitch collected. All matters of war I leave to you, under Ser Mason’s guidance. I will not be unprepared, nor does our Lord wish us to be.”

“As you say my Lady,” Captain Jonos responds from a middle ground, “But… As you said the people?”

“Will worry and fret and feel discontent. Though not for long,” she replies, a sharp smile drawing upon her lips, “Acolyte Ashby, have we received the aid and supplies I requested from my mother?”

“Yes my Lady, not a week past and all has been accounted for and inventoried.”

“And do you believe this to be proper use of decree left behind by my Lord husband?”

“I would council for it, yes madam. Ser Mason is a great presence in the smallfolk’s eyes. His ascent will do their minds and hearts well.”

“Ascent?” you respond, unsure and confused.

“Yes,” Lady Obella draws with her dornish tongue, that wicked smile of hers not having left her lips, as she unrolls the scroll, “By decree of Lord Brynden Malroy I am vested with his word and power as the Lady of Steadhold. Given the strenuous circumstances we find ourselves in, I think it only proper to ensure the safety, defense and hearts and minds of our people to be secured. Ser Mason Flowers, House Malroy has granted you the Blackbridge Tower, her reconstruction paid for by our coffers, for your leal service in these past two years to House Malroy, and past decade to my Lord husband. In addition you will be given title as the Knight of Blackbridge Tower, and all incomes as seen fit by my Lord Husband’s hand. The people will see your ascent as action, while you raise men to station and purpose beneath you, they will feel purpose. Their discontentment will turn to loyalty, pride, and resounding faith in our cause. Do you accept Ser Mason Flowers?”

The councils are quiet, as much so as your own mind, you had spoken to Brynden of such things but he was drunk, as you had been. If such things even came to pass you had expected years, not months or bloody well never at all, “But… The funds, the supplies, the resources? House Malroy does not have such to spare my Lady.”

“It does now Ser Mason, remember, House Dayne has a well remembered name in these parts. And my mother is a very persuasive woman. She said to think of it as a secondary dowry, as I’m sure my Lord would never accept such otherwise,” she says with a laugh, “So?”

“I… I am accept my Lady,” you respond, falling to a knee and bowing deeply, “You do me such honor.”

“As you do with such service Ser Mason. Both I and my daughter shall sleep easier knowing you are finally at station and position you so very much deserve in service to my Lord husband and her father's House,” she smiles again softly, with warmth and happiness and bids you stand, “War Council, I expect you to begin preparations immediately. Small? I will not be needing your own any longer, you are dismissed. Acolyte Ashby and Ser Mason are all I require. Oh, and Lady Elionwy of the Blackbridge Tower as well.”

You wife to be is the first to come to your side, kissing your cheek and nestling in close to your arm despite the cold plate all in her silent happiness. The Captains offer congratulations as they leave off, Jonos being the most elated of them all.

"Ser, we've matters to attend to immediately," Ashby says, pulling many scrolls and papers from his sleeves, "Such deeds and forms to sign..."

Not bad lads, not bad at all. 3 for Influence and Power, 5 for Lands and Wealth.

So here's the plan, we're going to do all the rolls and nonsense. And then we're going to do a breakdown of each resource and the various options we have with each.

This is going to be a light thread, just something to get my head working again.

So with that said, let us begin.

I will need 7 rolls of 5d6 (since this is a Knightly House) for our starting resources, they will be taken in order as you'd expect.

Defense: 24
Influence: 15
Lands: 17
Law: 36 (Fucking Crownlands bonus)
Population: 18
Power: 12
Wealth: 23

>Regarding Steadhold Domain III aka The Princewood

Blackbridge Tower lies on its easternmost point, and historically was the domain of the Malroys of Blackbridge Tower prior to Robert's Rebellion when it was given to House Redward and when that branch went 'extinct' after the First Blackfyre Rebellion.

You do not need to give House Blackflower this Domain, however given their location they will not be able to obtain one with their Lands. Those resources could be reapplied elsewhere if this option is taken.

If granted the lands House Blackflower will instead only be able to use these lands to purchase Communities (Hamlet, Small Town, etc.)

So:

Grant House Blackflower, Steadhold Domain III [Plains - Heavy Woods+Road] aka The Princewood?

So looks like that's a Neigh.

Strictly speaking this isn't a bad thing. The Blackbridge Tower is part of the greater Steadhold area so no worries.

Moving on to Defense:

>No Holdings bigger than Small Castle. (Outpost, Tower, Hall, Motte-and-Bailey, Small Castle)
>Mason prefers to build a Wall of some form at the very least. Though will prioritize as necessary. (Wooden Wall or Curtain Wall)
>Due to his proximity to Steadhold Mason receives all bonuses from Holdings effecting Build Time, i.e. Engineer -20% Build Time

Do you wish to give Mason the Blackbridge, allowing him to repair the bridge with his own resources. (5 Defense)
>Yay
>Neigh

Given the Blackbridge Tower's state of disrepair you have a couple of options.
>Repurpose the Tower into a new Defense Holding? (Feel free to discuss) Effects: -5 Defense cost, -10% Build Time
>Return to the Tower to its former glory, six stories with the Warning Beacon upgrade. A more grand structure reminiscent of the Malroy glory days, but an easier target during siege.
>Rebuild and fortify what is left of the Tower, keeping at three stories with thicker walls and adding to the danger of attempting to take the bridge with the Arrow Slits upgrade.

All Holdings can be found in the core book, Out of Strife, Prosperity, and the Homebrew Holdings found in the Masterlist.

Also, since you didn't spend any Lands you are able to exchange Lands:Defense at a 1:1 basis, so if you'd like to go all in on Mason's Defenses go crazy.

Any and all questions welcome. Sorry about the delay, I'm trying to collect all of these thoughts together.

Yeah that's basically what it is right now. The Tower straddles the western side of the bridge, the gatehouse is a murderhole basically.

The eastern side is connected to the Outer Ring's Curtain Wall. So kind of like the Twins?

>>1137104
>Well could we have him rebuild the bridge then take taxes until he is reimbursed the cost + 50%?

I mean I guess you could? But is it really necessary when House Malroy's Wealth production will far outstrip House Blackflower's.
>>
>>1137132
Isnt the whole point that Mason can tax the bridge and keep the money himself so long he takes care to maintain it ?
>>
>>1137134
Yeah that's the implication of giving it to him basically. That it would be give Brynden more leeway and free up some of his obligations, aka the Bridge.

He would be given the Bridge Holding's bonuses which narrative wise would be the taxes he takes.
>>
>>1137094
>Yay

>Rebuild and fortify what is left of the Tower, keeping at three stories with thicker walls and adding to the danger of attempting to take the bridge with the Arrow Slits upgrade.

Alright so it looks like we do want to grant Mason the Blackbridge as well. He will immediately spend the 5 Defense to begin reconstruction on it.

Also it looks like we want to rebuild and fortify what is left of the Tower. So it'll be a shorter more squat thing, but it'll be super defensible.

So that leaves us with 19 Defense to use. And 17 in Lands if we want to transfer it over.

If you transfer it all that is 36 Defense to use, enough to also purchase a Small Castle, which is Mason's limit. He has no preference in this but here are some options if you would like to spend further, either to build a proper wall or give Mason a better seat in the future.

>Wooden Wall - 10
>Curtain Wall - 15

Alright, a Hall and a Curtain Wall it is. Mason has a hell of a lot of Defense invested in his one little area. Which is actually exactly how he works as a tanky Knight.

So I guess what he'll do is build a hall in the center of his little area. Build a big thick wall incorporating the old Blackbridge Tower into it and going directly into the Bridge.

Don't know if you have any ideas for names of the Hall, but yeah, that's an option if you guys have them.

I'll do the rolls and math for how long this is all going to take in a bit.

Anyway, so the next three up are things we can't really do anything about.

Population and Law are just there, as per usual, they have their applied bonuses that'll I'll add in at the end.

Influence is a bit tricky. Awhile ago I did a roll for Mason's first born, and it's a boy. Eventually he'll need to invest the full 20 into it, within the next nine months at least. So we'll work on that during his House Fortune rolls.

Next up on the major resources spending is Power:

>Mason prefers fewer veteran units, to more trained and green units.
>Has a preference for Archers, Heavy Cavalry, Heavy Infantry, and Pikemen
>As Master-at-Arms all of his units receive +Armor Rating for free.
>Due to his proximity to Steadhold he is able to purchase all upgrades made available by House Malroy’s Holdings, i.e. Superior Mounts for 2 Wealth, Superior Arms for 1 Wealth. This works vice-versa if Mason purchases a Holding that supplies a similar upgrade. (See Military Holdings for further information)

As Captain of the Sons of Gold Mason realizes between his duties as the Knight of Blackbridge Tower and as Master-at-Arms he will not have the capability to Captain the company on the field any longer and thus decides to choose a successor.
>Ser Victor Haigh, though not the most senior of the company he is the most alike Mason in his leadership styling and knowledge of Westerosi tactics and countermeasures to such. Will remain as reliable as it was under Mason, but eventually Westerosi armies will come to know the hit and run tactics and develop proper countermeasures of their own.
>Solhas za Tarbeck, already second in command and a long standing and respected member of the company. He will play more to the strengths of a Summer Isler rather than that of a Westerosi, making the company more unpredictable on the battlefield but less reliable than it was under Mason.

Pretty easy win for Solhas there. He'll be the new Captain of the Sons of Gold and Victor will become his second in command. Happy day.

Looks like we like the idea of Trained Archers. so that's -6.

Opinions between Green Pikemen and Infantry. Shame Mason's Power score is so low. Anyway a small vote:
>Green Pikemen (-4)
>Green Infantry (-5)

And another thing:

The consideration of taking a squire is floated, Mason is well known as a formidable Knight and comes with a degree of prestige within Steadhold but has never taken squire.
Clay, a low-born commoner, used in an effort to reach out to the disenfranchised and displaced people of Steadhold and the Princewood.
Aerion Waters, an orphaned dragonseed from Driftmark, displaced by the Rebellion and living as a stablehand. Supposedly has an elder brother about Essos.
Chester Bywater, Lady Wylla Bywater’s, Ser Raymun Chelsted’s wife, brother’s son. A boy born in a lesser branch of the family, come with his cousin Ser Jaromir Chelsted as part of the Chelsted delegation sent by Lady Alexes Chelsted. His former master died recently of old age and he finds himself without place.

Mason is just a Knight of a very small and new House, he doesn't really have the time, esteem, or resources to manage two squires. Unlike Brynden.

Alright so pretty easy win for Green Infantry there. That's another 200 armed men right across the way now. Give some people some jobs and what not.

Also looks like we'll pick up Clay as a squire. Poor kid has had it rough, refugee without much family. He'll do well once he learns how to act like a person.

Alright so lastly is Wealth:

>Mason is inclined towards Artisan Craftsman (Master Armorer), Improving his Military Units with better weapons and improvements, and lighter industry mostly focused towards Holdings that supplement or improve Steadhold’s preexisting industry
>Given House Blackflower doesn't own a Lands Domain they will not be able to purchase Estate Holdings.
>Given House Blackflower's Influence score of 15 they will only be able to purchase a single Personage Holding.
>Given House Blackflower's Defense Holdings they have the ability to purchase up to 3 Lifestyle or Settlement Holdings.

We have 23 Wealth to use, look through OOSP and the Homebrew Holdings for further ideas.

>>
So looks like Master Armorer gets the go ahead. But otherwise not a lot of ideas. Which actually isn't that surprising, not being able to have Estate Holdings kind of hurt.

>>
>>1137620

You're not wrong, seems to be popular. And this is of course assuming the one in the Homebrew Holdings document, not the Dog Kennels in OOSP, because the latter you cannot get. The former you can, by moving your last point of Lands over to Defense.

So I suppose we'll do that, Mason isn't using the Lands score anyway. So 1 Defense, 4 Wealth.

Thus leaving Mason with 9 Wealth to use. Let's just say he's going to sit on it.

Alright so I everything is set and done on Mason's House Stats sheet now. Look at that shit a bannerhouse.

Sorry if this was a touch boring and dry you guys.

It was really good to see so many people show up, glad an audience is still there.

So here's the plan, my life is kind of strange right now, and my free time is sort of all over the place. I'm going to update this thread throughout the week to finish out the "Mason Chapter" I'll post updates on my twitter and what have you, it will be at weird times so expect that. There is a little story I want to do, resolve a small conflict/tie up a loose end, and then give the big reveal on who the Crown is sending to help sort out the "bandit" mess. I'm looking forward to that.

After that I'm not 100% sure. I am hoping to be on a more regular schedule next month. And then I can resume a more regular week thread schedule.

So for tonight I'm going to call it, but tomorrow there will most certainly be an update or two. I missed you guys like hell. I know I'm a deadbeat. Etc. Just trying to get back into writing again so bear with me through this long ass process.

Mason has always considered himself a "black sheep" amongst the Tyrells, thus the three black roses in the chief of his personal coat of arms. You don't hear about a lot of Tyrell bastards and even though his father was significantly distant from the main branch it is still an odd thing. He's never been particularly ashamed of being a bastard, it simply is who he is so taking the name Blackflower for his trueborn and legitimate children is just natural for him. Note even Dontos, the bastard disliking son of a bitch he is, respects Mason. Besides he looks at the Longwaters and sees they are still successful despite the "taint of bastardy" and knows he is just as capable. Having Brynden to back him up just makes it easier.

>Call it The Blackrose Pyrce

Mason's House will be tolling any who want to pass the black crossing, be they farmers, and peddlers, or attacking forces.
Everyone pays a price to pass under the three black roses.

The Lannister's Words are "Hear me roar" The Blackflowers' Words are "Lead the Way". But the Lannisters also are known to say "A Lannister always pays his debts" I had a thought that perhaps the idiom "To press blood from a stone" could be of use to the Blackflowers in a similar sense.

Also Thorny Gate. Does that scan? Maybe for the Blackbridge main gate?

http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Longwaters

>The term "baseborn"[9][10] is used to refer to a child of whom one parent is of the smallfolk.

So baseborn is the same as bastard. Just a bastard born when highborn and smallfolk fuck.

I was just saying that a Bastard, the son of a Targaryen Princess and the Lord of House Velaryon, a greatly renown knight, didn't or couldn't change his last name of Waters. Once that knights son was born the son was able to change his name to Longwaters because he was born in wedlock. And I thought it relevant information to the character the QM was writing.
>>
>>1161316

The parents could have a legitimate wedding but if the parent was considered common the child would still be 'baseborn'.
>>
>>1161400
I don't know man I'm not a expert on this. Maybe a marriage between smallfolk and lords are considered so unimportant they aren't seen as legitimate. It makes sense that they would call any child of smallfolk blood baseborn no matter the circumstance. But according to the wiki the term can be used for bastards with one parent who is a part of the smallfolk. It's probably able to be use as a general term for someone who is considered to be of lower birth. It makes sense that they would. You can call a person whose parents are happily married a bastard.
>>
>>1161435
Fisherman and farmers daughter get married and have a child. The child will be trueborn but will still be baseborn.
>>
>>1161435
>Maybe a marriage between smallfolk and lords are considered so unimportant they aren't seen as legitimate.
The child would then take the Lord name IF it was born after the marriage, before that and it's the bastard surname.
If the noble parent is female, the child will take the bastard surname by default.

>>
>>1161724
Only legitimized bastards, trueborn children of bastards and bastards who has been landed are allowed to change their name.

I think you are getting the wrong idea. We werent creating a house to run as a quest. We merely rolled for a bannerhouse to the actual quest house.

Not really importanted what we think. The rules about bastardry is pretty clear

I see no landed knight bastards? I see bastards legitimized by kings. I see a commoner who was granted lands and named a knight.

Hmmm Walder Rivers married the Lady Charlton. You would think the Frey bastard who often is mentioned to hate being a bastard would take the chance to change his name once he gained a lordship over House Charlton. But strangely even his children bear the name Rivers? Maybe the taint of bastardy is so reviled that yes even being granted lands, even marriage with Highborn lords or ladies, nothing short of legitimization a King will wipe away that bastards name and stigmatism.
>>
>>1161839
But I've digressed. It doesn't really matter. I love House Blackflowers' Arms, Ser Mason is a interesting character. I like seeing him granted lands and honorifics. I was just sorta shooting the breeze thinking about the thread and all that got caught up.
>>
>>1161839
>Walder Rivers married the Lady Charlton.
If you look at the line between Walder Rivers and Lady Charlton you see that it is the same as the one Walder Frey has when he gets bastard childrens.
http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Walder_Frey
Walder Rivers, a man who hates being reminded that he's a bastard has bastards children of his own. At least he married their mother. But yes, you'll still be treated like a bastard even if you marry.

>bastards legitimized by kings.
Daemon Waters what first knighted and given a sword, the sword of Aegon the Conqueror. When knighted the person must decide on a name, some don't give a fuck and keep their bastard name while other decide on a fancy name. Since he was given the sword of the Conqueror he'd be stupid not calling himself something related to his ancestor.
He only got legitimized at Aegon's death, at this moment he could take the Targ name but was okay with Blackfyre since it was the name of The Sword.

Davos is the simplest example out of the three as he is not from noble stock.
>Did a good deed.
>Gets land and title.
>People still treat him like shit even though Stannis will listen to him and not the Dondarrion, the Tarth nor the Selmy.
