This morning was hell.

“Come on, come on!” Winona, Ingrid, Josephina, Stack, and basically almost everyone in the team was excited to hear how your so-called “date” with Jeep Jockey went. It wasn’t really a date. It was just him and you washing his plane, him showing you the basics of flying a plane, then him picking you up and oh god he was so strong no no no, bad thoughts go away. Winona hugs you from behind as you brush your hair. “Tell us! What was it like? Was it romantic? Did he sing to you a sonnet? Was it like Grease or more like West Side Story?”

“What the hell kind of dates do you go on, Winona?” She smirks at your response. “I’m telling all of you, -all of you-.” The entire team stands behind you. “It was just to clean his plane. Nothing else happened.”

“But Denise says she saw Jeep Jockey lift you up,” says Suvorov. SHE WHAT. NO. DENISE. DENISE! DENISE! “And then you went red like a tomato.”

“Th- I was- I was hot,” you say. Goddamn it, you stuttered.

Serina rises up out of the crowd. “Hehehe… looks like things got heated.” All the girls giggle.

“JUST-“ You point out the door. “Out!” you shout. They immediately pile out, gossiping among themselves. Fucking- Denise! Ugh! Gossiping girls are the absolute worst. You turn around and-

There’s your crew. They smirk smugly as if they had just seen Squidward raid the Krabby Patty vault.

Ugh! You turn around, huffing. This better not be a thing when you get back from work. You step out of the hangar and find Denise waiting with her Kettenkrad. “Denise, why did you tell people that Jeep Jockey picked me up last night?”

Denise gasps. “He picked you up!?”

“I mean PHYSICALLY.”

“Oh. Um. Well they asked,” says Denise. “I didn’t want to lie to them. Plus, it’s kind of a minor thing anyway. A minor thing that could turn into lewdness!” You roll your eyes. “I’m just out to protect you, Ellie from the evils of boys who want to take advantage-“

“Get on the fucking bike.”

You arrive at work to find everybody now hard at work. Admiral Nimitz especially is munching on a toy mouse on your desk as you sit down. “Morning, everyone.”

Caldwell tilts her head, slyly smirking. “So how did the date go?”

“Listen here you little shit-“

Hilda interrupts you. “Ellie. Captain wants you to sign off on these financial reports.” You nod, taking the stack of papers from Hilda. Ugh, some work ought to ease your mind for now. Though. You blink, looking up at Caldwell. She giggles a little, still staring smugly at you.

“I heard you got all hot and bothered just by Jeep Jockey lifting you up,” Caldwell whispers from across the room.

“I’ll lift you up and throw you across this room,” you say. “Please stop with gossip, ugh.” You shudder. Just because you get a little flustered at the idea of being carried by someone in a princess carry doesn’t give people the right to start bothering you about it. You shake your head, starting to go through your finance reports. Whatever.

Caldwell snorts. “Please, you won’t find me being flustered by any regular boys.”

Athena walks over to Caldwell, placing down a stack of files for her to look at. “No, just girls.”

“You-“ Caldwell grabs her desk, glaring at Athena. “I am not- listen! I have incredibly high standards when it comes to relationships! I am not going to settle for anything less than a person who can make 40k a year annually, is good with kids, likes astronomy and space, and ferrets!”

“Ferrets?” asks Hilda. “The little long rat things?”

“Yes, ferrets!” she says. “I’ve always wanted one but my parents never let me have one,” she quietly mutters.

“Whatever. We have work to do,” you say. Admiral Nimitz crawls up your arm, then rests on your hat. “Listen. Caldwell.” She looks at you. “Tomorrow, we have a meeting with the Captain, remember?” She nods. “Good.”

“What do you think the meeting is about?” asks Caldwell. “I bet it’s about me being promoted over you!”

You sigh. “I just hope it’s not anything bad.” Caldwell huffs, turning her nose up at that response. “Seriously, Caldwell. Does everything have to be a competition with you? I’m just interested in getting my work done.” And you know for a fact that you can do it better than she can after all. She’s pretty much wasting her time.

“Human progress is built on competition, Zumwalt,” says Caldwell. “Way I see it, we make each other better so long as we’re in conflict.”

“Riiight.” You turn away at that, then go straight back to doing your finance reports. “Look. You can be competitive all you like. Just be aware I’m not really into that stuff.” Besides, you smoked her in most areas, management, leadership, dancing. What else could she possibly have that you don’t? Whatever. “Is this all the work we have for today?” you ask Hilda.

“Yeah,” says Hilda. “The Captain is diverting most of the busywork to the cubicle monkeys downstairs.”

“Has anyone noticed that most of our cubicle monkeys are Vietnamese girls?” asks Denise.

Athena says, “Oh yeah, Elodie. You have practice today, yeah?” You nod. “Any matches this weekend?”

“No. It’s a break before FleetFest and the All-Star game. Then we do the final two Interleague matches against Joan D’Orleans and Zhou Enlai,” you explain. “I don’t expect much of a fight from D’Orleans if I’m honest. But, Zhou Enlai looks to be something to fear. I’m just hoping we take the time to bury JWC so they don’t come up as a Wild Card in the postseason.”

“Yeah, wouldn’t want to choke,” says Caldwell. You roll your eyes.

“It is a serious possibility that it could happen,” says Athena. “I’m sure you’ll do fine though.”

“Thanks for the encouragement.” Athena smiles at that. You say, “For now, I guess we have to leave research and strategy to Griselda. I imagine the two division leaders in their respective sides aren’t going to be very easy wins. Even if I did just say Joan D’Orleans could be a pushover.” You sigh, leaning back in your seat. Nimitz falls off your head, then immediately hops back into your lap.

Well, whatever. Time to get this work done.

“Did you hear about the new tanks Zhou Enlai and Kursk received?” asks Caldwell as you step out into the street. Oh? “Their Twitter just posted it. Says here they just bought a shipment of Centurion tanks.” Oh, lovely. “And Kursk is also aiming to replace their medium tank line with T-54s. I thought post-war tanks weren’t allowed.”

“By the rules of NATO, post-war mods and –variants- are allowed in case by case basis,” you explain. “It’s a loophole thing.” One that you seriously aren’t too thrilled about. But oh well.

You munch at your fries as you and your retainers sit around the table. “So I was saying to Abby, ‘how does that stay fashionable?’” says Denise. “And Abby is like, ‘of course it’s fashionable, it’s stripes! Everybody likes stripes!’”

Athena shrugs. “I dunno. Stripes aren’t exactly my thing.”

“Polka dot?” asks Tessa.

“I like polka dot,” says Hilda. “Though, I just prefer like plain solid colors I guess. I’m not really a fan of patterns.”

“Really?” Caldwell leans forward on the table. “See, I like stripes, I like polka dots too. But what about when you get like pictures or stuff.” Everyone at the table groans.

“Or worse yet, a fecking flag,” says Mulcahy.

“Ugh, that is the worst!” says Denise. “Like, how try-hard can you get when you wear an American flag shirt!? Like, really?”

You blink. This conversation did not go the direction you thought it would.

Caldwell sips on her drink, grumbling. “See. I don’t like horizontal stripes. Horizontal stripes make you look fat.” Everyone nods in agreement. “But I do like those two-toned blouses that are like, one color above the chest and shoulders, and another matching color on the stomach and waist. But it’s like… ugh. There’s not so much of that. You usually have to get that custom.”

“I know!” Denise sighs. “And it’s worse for me because uh…” She pats her chest. “I’m a little bit thick here.”

“Obviously,” says Mulcahy.

“So I have trouble finding shirts that fit! Not to mention good bras and stuff. I’m sure Elodie has the same problems too!” What? “Don’t you, Elodie?”

“Yeah. Um. I guess.” To be completely frank, your Mom did invest a lot of time and money in teaching you the important of having nicely fitted underwear you suppose. Now, this actually reminds you that Winona bought you those sexy undies. Ugh. “I mean, underwear’s underwear though, who cares what kind of pattern it is and stuff?”

“You don’t like matching your undies with your ensemble?” asks Tessa. “What happens if you’re wearing black under white?”

“Tessa, you’re blind,” says Athena. “That shouldn’t matter to you.”

“So you say,” says Tessa. “But, even I know that a good set of underwear can really brighten up one’s day!”

“How?” you ask.

“Well, first part is that you have to be comfortable in it!” she explains. You sigh. Of course.

You check your watch. “Ooh, we should probably get to practice.” Everyone stands up. Caldwell lays down money for the tip, and with that you hurry away.

“Right, today’s PT day!” says Griselda. “Let’s welcome our newest crew, the Elodie Zumwalt fanclub!” Everyone polite applauds their appearance. “Now, today’s freeform! Take a jog, do some stretches, lift weights, I don’t care! Make sure you’re doing everything that fits with the tank that you’re using!” You’ve all dressed into PT shirts and shorts.

You sigh. At least nobody is gossiping about you now. Stack says, “Alright! What are we gonna do today? Lift? Run? Stretch?”

Winona hugs you from behind, resting her head on your shoulder. “We could take turns deadlifting Ellie.” Oh ha ha. Very funny.

You decide a nice leisurely jog around the training grounds with the fan club will be enough for today’s practice. You find them panting and wheezing heavily as they trail behind your own crew. It’s only been five laps guys, come on. Stack slows her pace, looking back to them. “Come on guys, heads up. Heads high. Full of pride!”

Elyse holds her arm up. “T- too tired!” They all collapse into one big pile. You all stop up, looking at them. Oh, poor things. You all walk on over to them. “H-… how do you do this!?” That’s a good question. You’ve been conditioning yourself for almost four months now. Even Ingrid is basically built up and fit at this point. You offer them water and for now you all decide on a break. Stack starts doing pushups with Ingrid sitting on her back to keep warm for now.

Winona says, “Come on, chin up! It’s only five laps, about twenty-five more to go!” They all groan.

You sigh. “Guys, it’s alright. Just get some water in all of you.” They sit around on the track, drinking water. Suddenly, speeding past is the Naval Studies Rescue team, neck and neck with the Survivalists.

“YOU’LL NEVER DEFEAT THE RESCUE TEAM!” yells Regina.

“AS IF!” yells Duchess. “YOUR RESPONSE TIME IS LIKE A TORTOISE TAKING A WALK!”

Oh, so competitive those two teams.

You fold your arms, looking around. Suddenly you see Arisu taking a walk on the track underneath a light umbrella. She looks over at you, waving hello.

Wait. ARISU. You wave back. “Who are you waving at?” asks Winona.

Goddamn it. “Right. Um. Break’s over, let’s get up and get going, girls.” The fan club picks themselves up, moving to jog again.

Stack says, “We’ll set a slower pace this time, don’t worry! And next week, we’ll have to do lifting, those 17 pounder shells get heavy after a while!” They all groan in disappointment and phantom pain. Yep. Tankery is not going to be kind to them no matter how much they flatter you.

You all relax in the showers. Ingrid and Stack rest and relax in the bath while you, Winona, and Josephina wash yourselves off in the showers. “As I was saying,” says Serafina. “In order to copy Elodie and Iris’ examples, we must consider ourselves much more elegant!”

Ingrid looks over. “Is that why you’re drinking tea in the bath?”

“Precisely!” says Serafina. They take a sip, all smiling in satisfaction. “Ah! Nothing like a nice hot tea after a day’s work.”

“Finally, someone agrees,” says Iris as she steps past.

“Hey, did you guys hear the rumors about the All-Stars?” asks Regina. “They say Meryl and Iris are basically shoe-ins.”

“Of course Meryl’s a shoe-in, this is her last year in High School Tankery. Same with Oryola,” says Griselda. “Plus she’s having an amazing year. It’s a race to the most kills by the end of the tournament between her, Iris, Dix, and Elodie.”

“Yeah!” says Serina. “I was just checking the website, Griselda has a big following too. And Elodie’s following is actually quite big too.” Is it? “Though, not enough to guarantee a spot in the All-Star game.”

“It’s a 30 vs 30 game,” says Griselda. “Plenty of spots. I’m sure Elodie will make it in.”

“Well, thanks for your belief in me I suppose.” You blush a little. Jeez. You never thought you’d actually have responsibility now of representing the school at the All-Star game. You are a bit fo a ways away, but… just the possibility. It’s absolutely mindblowing. Iris should go, Iris is the best on the team by far. You’re just picking up the scraps. Griselda should go too, she’s the commander after all.

Only reason you have popularity now is because you were in the right place at the right time really.

Iris pats your back. “Chin up, Elodie. We’re the Big Three after all, not the Big Two and one girl who occasionally does cool stuff. They wouldn’t dream of denying either one of us the All-Star game.” Yeah, yeah.

Hm.

Finally you exit out of the shower. Everyone is dressed in casual ware as you all start settling in, laying out the sleeping bags and lanterns as well. Fried noodles was tonight’s supper you suppose. Ingrid lays back on her sleeping bag. “The Nationals are going to blow it. They blow it everytime,” she explains. “Way I see it, the Cubs have a decent chance this year, but they need some help with their bullpen. Otherwise they’re going to get schwacked. Royals though, on fire all the way.”

“Ingrid.” Stack has a few loose noodles hanging from her lips. “We don’t know any of these teams.” Ingrid huffs, looking up at the ceiling.

“Of course.” Ingrid grumbles, turning over onto her stomach. Ingrid was wearing just a simple baseball jersey and some shorts. Stack just a t-shirt and shorts as well. Josephina was settled into her pajamas and Winona in a nightgown as well. You hear the sound of welders as you see Oleg and the mechanics put the finishing touches on the new gun for the Panzer III. During your practice he’d also fitted a .50 onto the Jackson, as well as start work on turning the Panther chassis into an actual Panther. That man is a machine.

Ingrid shows off the grips on a baseball. “So here is a curveball.” She shows off a funkier one with her fingers. “This is a slider.” Stack and Josephina look pretty engrossed. She switches to something more resembling the ball jammed between her fingers. “This is a split-finger. Jam it in farther it’s a forkball.”

“And this makes the ball move?” asks Stack.

“Yeah!” says Ingrid. “We can try it if you’d like.”

“Nah.” Stack folds her arms, leaning back and resting her back. “Way I see it, Ingrid, you are way too obsessed with baseball.”

“I could say the same thing about you and tanks,” says Ingrid.

Stack huffs. “Maybe.”

Thank God they’re not discussing last night.

Winona says, “You know what I heard last night?” Oh fuck. Everyone looks at Winona. “I heard that Mei Xiang is going to visit LGA again.” Oh. Her again. “I heard it through the grapevine in the Tank Shop with Huxley and Lisa.”

“Why would Mei come around here?” asks Stack. “Don’t the Chinese have better things to do like make money and steal players and tanks from people?”

“Maybe she’s scouting,” says Winona.

“She scouted enough a while back,” says Ingrid. “And obviously she wasn’t too keen on making friends, the bitch.” She snorts. “Way I see it, maybe she just wants to study our tactics or see how things have improved for themselves.”

“Hey, maybe she’ll come around to being friends,” you say. “Who knows. A lot’s happened since she first visited.” The other girls look skeptical. To be frank, you are too. It’s not everyday people just up and change. Though, Arisu did mention that Mei was a student of the Shimada-ryuu. You sit down on your sleeping bag, rubbing your chin. “I mean. I’d like to think so, right?”

“We’ll see,” says Stack. “But if she tries to poach any of us again, I’ll give her the guns!” She flexes her biceps. “Hmph! I got me a pair of SBRs right here!” You roll your eyes. “Come on, feel ‘em! I’ve been lifting a lot more lately!”

Josephina pats them. “Oooh, they do feel quite hard!”

“I know right!” says Stack. She smiles at Josephina. “You work out too, Josephina?”

“Ah, oui. My father has always encouraged a pretty healthy exercise regimen since I was a little girl,” she explains. “Keeps me healthy and wise after all. Though I will say, Stack. You are probably one of the most physically strong people I know.” Stack beams at that happily.

“You know, Josie.” Ingrid leans forward, smiling at Josephina. “We don’t actually know that much about you, do we?” Josephina blinks. “I mean, you’re tall, you like helicopters. That’s… pretty much it. That and you’re cute as a button too.”

“Aw, well.” Josephina rubs at her long blonde hair, frowning. “I mean, I don’t like to make things all about me. Especially because of my height.”

“Ah, you’re not that tall!” Stack stands up. Josephina stands up as well, looking down at Stack. “… wow, you’re a big unit. Okay.” Ingrid snickers at that.

Winona covers her mouth. “I bet Josephina could pick up Ellie.” She probably could- wait. Winona nudges you, smirking.

“Nope, nope, nope.” You shake your head. “Please don’t try to pick me up. I mean, I don’t doubt that you could. You probably can given your size. But I mean-“

Stack leans over. “What’s wrong, Ellie? Scared? She’s not that tall? If she drops you, you’re not gonna die!”

“Yeah!” says Winona.

Josephina says, “Hehe… if she doesn’t want me to pick her up, that’s fine.” She rubs at her hair nervously.

Ingrid says, “Booooo.”

You sigh. “Look. You can try, Josie. I don’t mind.” You do mind. But you’d really rather just pacify the crowd for now. Ugh. “Really, it’s just-“ Josie hefts you up in a princess carry immediately. “Whoa! Uh-“ You look down. Oh fuck that ground is higher than you thought. Wow. Your wiggle your toes a bit, looking up at Josephina. She smiles back, giggling.

“Aw, Ellie’s gone sheer red!” says Stack. She pokes your cheek. You slap it away, glaring at her.

“Look, it- it’s- Put me down!” you hiss. Josephina sits down then gently lets you down. You crawl back on all fours before settling back down on your butt. “Look. I- I-… it’s not what you think. I just get… flustered when I’m picked up, okay?”

“What would your Mom and Dad say?” asks Winona. You throw your pillow at her. “Ow!”

You sigh. “Ugh. Why do I even bother having the lot of you as a crew?”

“Cuz you love us.” Stack rests her head on your shoulder.

“And you can’t replace us.” Winona as well leans on your arm, grinning. Josephina and Ingrid laugh a little.

… ugh. Friends.

That's it for this weekend's LGA2. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll return for the coming weekend as I have to visit my sister with family down south. I'll try to make it up to you somehow and hopefully I should be able to run Starship Idols regardless. We'll see. Hope you all enjoyed.
