Well, new quest, new beginning, right? Welcome if this is your first time, and to anybody from my previous quests, welcome back! Let's get this started!

"Harry Neumann."

Your body instinctively tenses at the mention of your name, a habit that's been well drilled into thanks to rigorous military training. You stand up, making sure that your uniform was properly straightened out and clean of any dust and lint. It wasn't every day you were meeting an Admiral face to face, after all.

Despite this, the waiting room you were sitting in was a rather humble affair. Basically just a metal box with a few chairs and a couple doors, one being the exit and the other leading to the Admiral's office. The holoplate on the steel sliding door read ADMIRAL NELSON, whoever that was. There wasn't even any space allocated for a secretary or adjutant, their role substituted by a simple speaker built into the wall.

To the casual civilian viewer, this all seemed pretty cheap, but to you this was pretty normal. This was just one of many temporary offices New UN Spacy personnel used on Earth, especially those on rotation from colony deployments. Hell, this Admiral Nelson must have been in a real hurry since they weren't even meeting you dirtside, instead opting to meet you in one of the many orbital defense stations hanging above the planet. All these signs were already cluing you in to the nature of your next assignment.

Anyways, best not to keep this Admiral waiting. You step up to the door, which slides open soundlessly. The office was equally as bare as the waiting room, but at least it was graced with the presence of desk. And on the other side was a woman sporting crimson red hair tied up in a braided bun, amber eyes smoldering in the dim light of the office. And as expected, she was wearing the standard issue NUNS Admiral uniform.

"Neumann, please take a seat." She says coolly, with almost machine precision.

There's a brief pause.

"Is something the matter?" She asks, her left eyebrow raising ever so slightly.

"No ma'am." You say crisply and quickly, your military instincts kicking in.

And they most certainly saved you from blurting out some stupid question about her gender. True, female senior flag officers were rather rare in NUNS, but that didn't mean they didn't exist.

"Please, sit." She repeats herself, narrowing her eyes ever so slightly. A subtle warning that she wasn't going to humor you again.

You sit down in the lone chair, still facing Admiral Nelson. A quick scan of her uniform showed that outside of her rank insignia, there weren't any other medals or ribbons denoting her service. That either meant she was freshly promoted, or she didn't care to advertise her achievements.

"I will get straight to the point here, Pilot." Admiral Nelson leans forward. "I'm in need of a pilot for a rather... 'special' unit the NUNS is preparing. And you happen to meet all of the requirements."

"Ma'am?" You frown. "Permission to speak freely?"

She silently nods.

"I don't think I've done anything to warrant special attention from the brass." You frown. "Are you sure this isn't some kind of mistake?"

"Can you please recount to me your service history?" Admiral Nelson asks softly.

"Wouldn't you already have access to my file, ma'am?" You ask.

"I'd like to hear how you say it." She responds simply.

Well...

"Then you should know as well as I do that I'm not supposed to talk about it." You narrow your eyes.

"A very good answer, Pilot." The slightest hint of a smile creeps across Admiral Nelson's mouth. "It is that sort of discretion from NUNS Special Forces that we need."

"So what kind unit is this supposed to be?" You grunt. You never did like having your "black" career brought up. "Recon? Assassination? Rendition?"

"Tactical Sound." She says simply.

That... that sounded familiar. And then it hits you.

"Oh no, oh HELL no!" You blurt. You knew the implications of a Tactical Sound Unit. You heard plenty of horror stories from other pilots about how those assignments usually involved babysitting some spoiled diva.

Then again, these days, Tactical Sound roles were subcontracted out private firms that had... looser regulation and had a knack for picking up disgraced or unwanted NUNS pilots.

"I know you're thinking why we need such a unit when we already have SMS, Chaos, and a multitude of other contractors at our disposal." Admiral Nelson says coldly, ignoring your little outburst but still very well aware of it. "But this is something that High Command wants a little more direct oversight on."

"I don't have a choice in this, do I?" You groan.

"It was decided the moment High Command reviewed your file."

"I have a terrible singing voice, just to let you know." You warn.

"Don't worry, you'll be acting as a bodyguard for the one who does have the voice." Admiral Nelson responds. "You'll receive further details when you board the ship."

"Now?" You blink.

"Of course." Admiral Nelson nods as she stands up, packing up a small laptop, the only personal possession of hers. She walks past you, handing you an ID card. "Dock 309. We'll be setting off in two hours. Don't be late."

You sigh, glancing at your ID badge. No doubt to give you clearance to board Admiral Nelson's ship. The Admiral herself is long gone. Resigned to your fate, you return to your quarters to start packing your things. Fortunately, you tended to pack light since you traveled a lot. It didn't take long for you to get all your things into your duffel bag and head for the appointed dock.

Bag slung over your shoulder, you head down to the dock. Instead of taking the regular route, you decide to take a detour through the main fighter hangar. It was actually faster, and you wouldn't have to brush shoulders with the brass if they happened to pass by.

Plus, you were more comfortable around Valkyries, anyways.

You admire the rows and rows of VF-171s, all ready to take off at a moment's notice. Not exactly the most advanced plane in the NUNS arsenal, but the Nightmare was a solid workhorse.

However, your reverie is interrupted by a rough bump. You turn to see the source and catch sight of a person in full pilot getup walking briskly past you. He doesn't even make any sort of attempt to acknowledge you as he hustles off down the stairs to the hangar below.

Suddenly, warning klaxons blare and the entire hangar is bathed in red light as the area goes into emergency lockdown. The launch tube doors begin to roll to a close when you hear screaming and shouting below.

One of the VF-171s has lurched free from its dock and begins making a beeline for the launch tube. Deck crew wave frantically in an attempt to warn off the wayward fighter, but it remains determined to exit the hangar. At this rate, nobody was really in a state to stop it from leaving.

Well, you couldn't just stand by and watch this happen. You drop your duffel and put a foot on the railing, prepared to jump over the edge. Thankfully, you knew that the artificial gravity in hangars was always set to a fraction of 1g, to make it easier for the hangar crew to move heavy equipment around. A jump from this height wouldn't even hurt you at all.

Now, you could attempt to land on top of the rogue Nightmare that was attempting to take off and try to pull the pilot out. Or, you could try to go for one of the other idle planes in the hangar and try to head him off.

You land perfectly on the Nightmare's glass canopy with a loud THUD. Inside, you could see the pilot crane his head upward. His face was concealed by his polarized helmet visor, but you could image the look of sheer surprise and shock.

You knew that all Valkryies came with a manual override to forcefully open the canopy in case the ground crew needed to extract the pilot in an emergency, but you didn't have time to go scrambling for that. Instead, your mind goes blank as your hand balls into a fist and PUNCH the canopy.

And beyond all expectations, the canopy of the Nightmare shatters into a million pieces, sending them all scattering in the low gravity, each individual piece glittering like a star. You then reach down and pull the pilot's helmet off-

-and you're shocked to see the the equally shocked and very angry expression of a young girl.

"What the f-" She begins to say right before she's swarmed the ground crew, who forcefully pull her out of the cockpit.

"Let go of me you assholes!" The girl curses as she struggles and thrashes, but she's outnumbered. Station security also starts rushing in and slap cuffs on her wrists.

"EVERYBODY STAND DOWN." You hear a familiar voice bellow, Admiral Nelson's pure authority ringing throughout the hangar.

Naturally, everybody freezes, though the girl still struggles, glaring pure HATE at the Admiral.

"Amy, I'm disappointed in you." Admiral Nelson sighs. "Now you've given the impression that our crew is highly unprofessional-"

"FUCK you!" Amy snarls.

"Now I'll have to call your handler to escort you back..." Admiral Nelson sighs and turns to you. "My apologies, Neumann. Amy is, well, is supposed to be the star of our unit. I'll explain later. You're dismissed for now."

"I'm gonna skullfuck you when we get back to ship!" Amy growls at you.

"I'll meet you on the ship, then." You nod.

As you take your leave, you could still hear the girl cursing in the background, even at a distance. Younote that this Amy had some serious behavioral problems. Was she really supposed to be the core of your new unit? That was not very reassuring.

With a big sigh, you pick up your bag and head for Dock 309. One flash of your ID badge and the guards don't even bat an eye at your presence. A robotic adjutant provides you a map of the ship, an assault carrier named the Gladius. Not exactly a Super Dimensional Fortress type, though you're assuming a ship like that would back at wherever Admiral Nelson was stationed.

You drop your bag in your quarters, which looked to be a standard officer's berth. Basically a small apartment-sized room that you had to yourself, which was actually a pretty big luxury on a ship like this. However, you don't feel in the mood to unpack. You check your map of the ship to find any points of interest.

>Head for the bridge. You REALLY need a debrief from the Admiral.

You decide to head for the bridge, intending to get some more info out of the Admiral. Of course, you don't just storm into the bridge itself. You know better than to interfere with a bridge crew. Instead, you follow the map to the Admiral's office, which wasn't far from the bridge.

Upon reaching it, you notice that there was a more permanent plaque adorning the door, reading ADMIRAL DOROTHEA NELSON. So that was her full name.

It's not long until the Admiral herself arrives, a slight lag in her step. A subtle sign that she was extremely tired. You couldn't blame her.

"Ah, Neumann, good to see you've arrived." Admiral Nelson nods to you.

"Still got questions, ma'am." You say simply.

"As expected." The Admiral waves her ID card in front of the door, and it slides open. The office was a little more populated, with lots of paperwork and random knicknacks. While this may not be her flagship, it was evident the Admiral traveled constantly in this ship.

"So, what would you like to know?" She asks as she sits down behind her desk, giving you a judging eye. "We'll be undocking soon so I'm afraid we'll have to keep this meeting short."

"So where exactly are we going?" You ask, wondering what sort of distant theater you were being sent to.

"We are heading for the Nabaal Cluster." The Admiral replies.

"Nabaal?" You raise an eyebrow. "I heard there's at least three rogue Zentradi fleets floating around out there."

"Elements of three fleets, yes." The Admiral corrects you. "We've already had several skirmishes with their advance forces, but they seem more content to fight each other than us. But we don't know how long that will last."

"What do we have out there that NUNS is so willing to throw together a Tactical Sound Unit for?" You wonder.

"The Nabaal Cluster has one class one colony, three class two colonies, six class three colonies, and dozens of outlying stations." The Admiral remarks. "That's already a population of almost three billion. Not to mention, we have intelligence to suggest the location of nearby Zentradi automated factories that serve as strategic threats to our borders."

Still, THREE Zentradi fleets? That was almost twelve MILLION ships combined...

"Sounds like a challenge." You grin smugly.

"Well, at least you appear to be enthusiastic." Admiral Nelson sighs.

"Admiral, we're about to undock from the station." A voice buzzes over the intercom. "Please brace yourself. We'll be entering fold space one we clear the docking bay."

"Understood." The Admiral nods.

And every so often, you could see her eyes darting off to the side. You very subtly turn your gaze in that direction, and notice what looks to be a fully stocked rum cabinet.

Maybe Admiral Nelson's collar wasn't as tight as she made it appear to be?

"You think-" Admiral Nelson blinks, almost immediately caught off guard. Hah, guess she wasn't so stoic after all.

You and the Admiral just stare at each other, but she knows that she had already blinked first.

"Ah, as Amy so eloquently puts it, fuck it." Admiral Nelson groans as she unlocks her rum cabinet and pulls out a particularly large and expensive looking bottle and pours two glasses.

She slides one to you while she keeps on her hand.

"A toast, I suppose. To the 7th Tactical Sound Unit." She sighs.

You both start at the same time, but Admiral Nelson finishes downing her glass first, draining it like a black hole. You finish a second or two after her and both of you set your glasses down on the desk with a loud CLANK.

You could already feel the heat rising up through your face, turning it into a miniature sun. The Admiral, however, shows no change in her appearance or demeanor at all. She was damn good at this.

"Ha, you know, that was the first time since I made Admiral that someone offered to drink with me." The Admiral muses as she casually refills her glass. "Makes me feel like a junior officer again."

There's a sudden rumble throughout the ship. The telltale sign of a Fold jump. Looks like your journey has officially started.

"Kind of funny seeing an Admiral pining for the old days." You muse.

"They aren't old at all." The Admiral sighs. "I've hardly held this position for more than a year."

"Why are you telling me this?" You pause.

"I know your history. You would have done your due diligence and found out anyways. It's not like it isn't in the public record anyways." The Admiral downs her second glass effortlessly. "Honestly, I'm even thirty yet and they made me flag rank already-"

The Admiral then pauses, as if she had said far more than she should have.

You pause, the hand clutching your glass suddenly going cold. Shit, that meant the two of you must be roughly the same age-!

"I suppose that would be another matter of public record." The Admiral coughs, trying to play it off. She pours one more glass before setting the bottle aside. "I'm afraid that will be all for now. I still have duties to attend to once we defold."

"Understood." You down your last glass and stand up. "Admiral."

"Dorothea."

"Ma'am?" You blink.

"If we're dealing person to person like this, you can just call me Dorothea."

"Um, of course ma- Dorothea." You nod.

"And one more thing." She speaks up before you reach the door. "That thing you did in the hangar, where you smashed that Valkyrie canopy with your fist.."

"You saw that?"

"Who didn't?" Dorothea retorts. "How did you do that?"

"I'll tell you next time we share a drink." You grin as you give her a little salute.

"Cheeky little-" She mutters before give you a warm grin. "I'll hold you to it, then."

With that, you exit Dorothea's office. Out of the hallway viewport, you could see the rainbow colors of fold space flashing by, that odd alternate dimension that allowed humanity to travel vast intergalactic distances in the blink of an eye.

You check your watch. Going by Universal Sol time, which all NUNS ships ran on as standard, it was starting to get late, and if the Nabaal Cluster was as far away as you remembered, you weren't going to defold in a while.

You decide to head down to the hangar to see what exactly this carrier had in stock. As you head for the door, you notice a sign taped to the door.

AMY PROHIBITED BEYOND THIS POINT

...huh. Looks like they had reason to keep her out of their hangars. Was her trying to steal a Valkyrie a common occurrence? Nevertheless, you enter the hangar and are immediately met with a breathtaking sight.

Rather than the VF-171s you were used to, you instead see a lineup of primarly VF-25 Messiahs. Looks like the new mass production models were finally being rolled out to NUNS forces.

What also drew your eye was a singular VF-19 Excalibur tucked away at the end of the flightline. Had to be an ace or special forces pilot to snag themselves a high performance Valkyrie like that. The custom paintjob of dark blue with a singular red stripe going down the side of the fuselage also seemed to denote an elite status.

Besides the Valkyries, you noticed a few assorted destroids and even a couple Zentradi battlesuits. Seemed like this fleet was well stocked and diverse in selection...

You head over to the parked VF-19. You were familiar with this model and it's cousin, the VF-22 Sturmvogel. The primary Valkyries for special forces units. You knew that while the VF-25 was intended to be the new mainline fighter, you felt it still would be quite a match for the VF-19 at least. This beast of a Valkyrie sacrificed stability and ease of control for maximum performance. A special breed was required to fly these machines.

"So, I see you like her!"

You turn to see a younger girl in a pilot's suit, an energetic smile on her face framed with long, blue hair. A set of crystal blue eyes rounded out her features.

"You're the pilot?" You ask, pointing to the VF-19.

"Yep!" The girl nods with a wide smile as she shakes your hand. "Lieutenant Lara Williams! I'm your wingman!"

Ah, things were starting to make sense now.

"So, she's a beaut, ain't she?" Lara grins. "Don't worry, though! We'll get ya your very own once we set down Nabaal!"

"Well, I hope so. Can't be much of a pilot without a plane, right?" You shrug.

"Of course!" Lara chortles and slaps your shoulder. "Anyways, nothing stopping us from putting in a requisition ahead of time! So what's your ride going to be?"

You pause for a moment. You few quite a few Valkyrie models back in the day. You really had no wish to go back to the VF-171. That was a rapidly aging platform.

Seemed like your immediate options were-

VF-19 EXCALIBUR: Widely considered the pinnacle of aerospace engineering, the VF-19 was specifically designed to be the fastest and most nimble Valkyrie ever made, and it certainly lives up to that reputation. No other Valkyrie can fly as fast or turn as sharply as a VF-19. However, such performance comes at a cost, as the plane is inherently and highly unstable, requiring constant attention during combat maneuvers. In the hands of an unprepared pilot, the VF-19 was more dangerous to him than the actual enemy.

VF-22 STURMVOGEL: While lacking the raw performance parameters of the VF-19, the VF-22 makes up for this shortcoming with a powerful passive stealth system, as well as larger weapons bays for wider and diverse arsenal of weaponry. This combination of stealth and utility often make the VF-22 the perfect infiltrator unit, though it can still certainly hold its own in battle.

VF-25 MESSIAH: The intended replacement for the VF-171, the VF-25 sports a variety of systems and improvements that make it superior to the VF-171 in every way, and boasts performance comparable to that of the VF-19 and VF-22, though it does not quite exceed either craft. The VF-25's biggest claim to fame is the inclusion of the EX-GEAR system, which allows the pilot to remotely control the craft from a distance. The VF-25 is also designed to accept a variety of specialized external mission packs.

The fast packs for the messiah are something else.
>>
>>1916732
Also thankfully we seem to have someone sane and responsible on this team.
>>
>>1916725
>VF-22 Sturmvogel
Given we took the "special forces" background. Also large weapon bays and mounting points ahoy for only moderately reduced performance!
>>
>>1916725
>VF-22 Sturmvogel
>>
>>1916741
Yea but tactical sound units are gonna be doing much inflitrating and the EX-gear will allow some more omph when doing ground protection work.

We Sturmvogel now. Also fits our YF-19 wingwoman.
>>
>>1916746
Well we are ludicrously outnumbered by the zentradi and there are already a ton of VF-25's and their pilots already. Singing is a zentradi WMD, a stealth delivery platform to melt there hearts (like nuclear radiation would) is a good choice. Plus it takes alot of weapons, and seems to match or exceed the VF 25 in raw base performance.

Armoured pack yes please. With the reaction missiles.

No VF-1ex option?
>>
>>1916753
Singing is still a force multiplier. Its simple enough to disable comm channels to retain combat efficiency, space war 1 was a good show of that, since the grand fleet didnt completely kneel over and die. Singing alone isnt gonna win the war, it'll still require a suitably sized application of force.

"I've always had a soft spot for the Excalibur." You nod. "I think we can go with that."

"Sweet! We can double up!" Lara laughs as she slaps you on the back. "C'mon, how about we grab a drink or something?"

"Thanks, but I'm afraid I-"

"Then it's settled then!" Lara laughs as she hooks her arm around yours and starts dragging you away. "It's only natural for new wingmates to drink together on their first meeting, right?"

"I have the distinct impression you just made that up." You grumble as you let the girl drag you away.

"Don't worry, what's the worst that could happen?" Lara chortles.

Unfortunately, you'd find that out pretty quickly.

>And that's it for tonight! Thanks to everyone, new or old, who came to participate! Next thread will be next week, and don't forget Frontier Knight on Saturday!

Could be worse, we could be the only guy on this ship.

Or we convert an all-Meltrani ship that only has eyes for us.

Obviously it's a dodecahedron, since Merc uses d20s.

Warmly awaiting more galactic divas to dazzle the stage next week, Merc!
>>
>>1916782
Maybe we'll get Julie and Cole as Meltrandi pilots/idols too
>>
>>1916782
Well to do spoiler then we'd have to be as charismatic as Nekki Basara! FIYAH
>>
>>1916992
Basara was the most annoying character in all the Macross franchise for me, outpacing even that stupid strawman pacifist.
Meltrandi confirmed for no taste.
>>
>>1917005
To be fair, Zentradi soldiers also went wild for Ranka Lee. Zentradi in general have no taste.

If they go wild for crappy j-pop could you imagine what this fella could've done? If only. Also wouldn't it be something if the idol got knocked out and our MC stepped up and sang some queen along with an instrument track.
