You are Captain Carrina Marseille-O'Hara of the Colony Transit Fleet, forces of which are currently locked in battle with the Jovian Energy Fleet... or the Jovian Empire, or whatever they've taken to calling themselves these days. You suppose they style themselves an 'Empire' now, rulers of their own little system of lifeless worlds propped up by a single devalued commodity.

Of forty mobile suits which sorties to attack your own forces sixteen now remain active, the rest having been destroyed in a furious engagement. That included three mobile suits equipped with a new version of the EXAM system, which basically uses the soul of a newtype as a form of advanced flight computer. It makes it possible for pilots who lack the brainwave activity required for funnels to use wire-guided remote weapons, and affords them faster response times as though they themselves were newtypes.

It resembles our own arrangement... except I have a way out if I want. I don't think the victim of the EXAM system does.

You can't even be sure that the newtype involved is a victim per se, it's entirely possible it was a volunteer. But somehow you doubt it, or at very least you doubt that they knew what they were truly getting into.

“We're getting hammered!” Commander Bong calls out. “What are those damn things!?”

“Remote weapons!” one of the Martian pilots shouts back. “Keep the fire up and keep moving!”

“We're down seven machines, they have us nearly two to one!” Lieutenant Harding reports. “Commander, we have to form up or they'll pick us off one by one!”

“Dammit I'm trying, Lieutenant!”

“Several of those seem to be EXAM suits as well,” Rossweisse informs you. “ALICE and I can mark the likely targets on your HUD.”

Four more probables?

I guess not every team had one as their lead?

“We're moving in to engage those special-types,” you declare. “Haman you're with me, Bianca and ReZel team watch our backs. These guys might try and turn our flanks.”

“Roger, I'm at your four o'clock,” Haman acknowledges. “I'll open fire with my funnels to cover our approach run.”

I'll be doing the same, synchronize with my count.

“Go on my mark,” you relay the message to Haman.

Three...
“Three...”

Two...
“Two...”

One... firing!
“One... mark!”

The beams from your combined funnel barrage scythe into the formation of Jovian mobile suits, taking off an arm and leg or two but scoring no victories. Concentrated beam machine gun fire from your own main weapon however quickly adds up on a target unprotected by an i-Field defense, scarring the armor plates and slagging crucial systems as it turns to try and fire on you. The fingertips melt off of its hands and its own rifle is ripped away, its face cameras boil into nothingness, and the pilot frantically tries to eject as something inside the torso ignites in a powerful blast.

Your moment of success is brief, as the three remaining EXAM machines shift their attention from your allies to yourself and to Haman, quickly proving themselves adept at close-range combat as well. One draws a long-handled weapon which projects a deadly beam, which it brings down against the blade which ignites almost at a thought from a mount on your own machine's right arm.

“Not that old trick...” you sigh, moving the Viola's arm to intercept the second blade projected from the opposite end of the weapon. It's just the double-bladed beam saber of an old Gelgoog-type machine... Matsunaga may have popularized this little trick to take advantage of another pilots unfamiliarity with the weapon but it's a trick many of the veterans who survived that long came up with at the same time.

And if you watch where one blade is, you know where the other one is. Countering such a technique is effortless for you.

A swipe from your arm slices through the beam weapon, and you put a few weak beam blasts into the enemy to force him to back off and try to switch to his own ranged weapon.

Yours is better.

Grenade out! your sister reports as you fire one of the warheads slung under the long barrel of your beam machine gun. The blast gouges deep scars into the mobile suit's armored torso and knocks some pieces off, but doesn't finish it off.

“Got you!” you roar, finishing the job with a sustained burst of beam blasts. The mobile suit's optics quickly flash red... but then go dark.

That felt strange for a moment...

“Haman, how you doing?” you call out over the comms.

“Not bad,” she tells you. “I'm dealing with these two, you've got a third incoming!”

“Haman, I'm moving to you!” you declare, angling your thrusters so that as many of them as possible are on the same vector. “We'll combine our efforts, work as a team.”

“It's been a while since we've done that properly,” Haman muses. “But I'm not opposed of course.”

You manage to make it to Haman more or less unmolested despite the fact that another one of the EXAM machines seems to have gone berserk.

That same sensation again... I keep having to adjust control of my funnels, sis. Like they're mis-calibrated or something.

“Just keep the fire up sis,” you sigh. “Pick one and concentrate on it. Haman and I are doing the same.”

Your fire strikes true, causing immense damage to the three EXAM-enabled mobile suits despite their high maneuverability and power. They're just not enough to match your own innate abilities, nor the high base performance of your own weapons... and certainly not enough to make up for the fact that they've clearly been specialized in this.

In some ways they'd have been better off with massive numbers of missiles, or a stupid number of beam guns you figure as the cumulative effect of your fire causes your own target to shake, then crumble apart under the strain of its own maneuvers. Haman's target explodes from a penetrating shot to its core block, while the thick armor of your sister's target lets it absorb more punishment. But as Haman's guns and your own turn on it the pilot turns tail.

“They're falling back!” Commander Bong cheers. “All the remaining MS are leaving the AO!”

“This doesn't feel right,” Haman mutters.

“Power spike aboard Nelson!” Rossweisse reports.

It seems they're firing up their weapons... but do they simply mean to cover their mobile suits' retreat? Or is it their intention to turn to the offensive?

“We have to close in on Nelson,” you declare, pulling off your helmet and removing the patch over your right eye. “Take out her main armament before she comes into range of our fleet.”

“You're insane!” Commander Bong counters.

“She's right,” one of the Martian pilots insists. “This is what we've been waiting for, holding our heavy missiles in reserve.”

“You still have those Stark Jegans?” Haman asks.

“Affirmative, ready and waiting.”

“Bianca, you used your missiles?” you ask.

“Still in the tubes,” she answers. “On your word.”

“Then all you people need to do is listen to my warnings,” you tell them. “I can help you weave your way through the AA fire, but there's no guarantees.”

“We're with you,” Harding insists.

“Then hard burn after those mobile suits!” you order. “We'll take the lead.”

The opening burst of fire is intense, but not nearly so dense as the patterns your own CTF capital ships can manage. It seems they've gone for an even distribution, while Sericea, Nagato, and Sadalahn cluster their point defense weapons where their fields of fire are clearest. So while there are some approaches where only one cluster can fire that never amounts to fewer than four barrels even on the smallest ships, while the majority of Nelson's PD can't focus on any given target.

“I've got your IFFs on my HUD,” you report. “A-5, evade in three... two... one... now!”

“B-3, evade now!”

“Commander Bong, evade!”

Each time you see that one of your allies might normally take a serious hit from the laser weapons you warn them, and they manage to dodge by the skin of their proverbial teeth.

But that doesn't hold out forever.
>1/2

>>2064878
The fire intensifies as you reach their optimal firing range, and you're confronted by a scenario you just can't work past... Commander Bong and one of the Stark Jegans are shot down within a second of each other. One by a shot that lands squarely on the center of Bong's cockpit, and the other by a blast which sets off a propellant tank that envelops the Stark Jegan in fire and shrapnel.

On the one hand Bong is the leader of the Lunar squad... not one you have much respect for, but he serves his purpose. On the other hand the Stark Jegan carries anti-ship missiles that will be important in taking out the Nelson's weapons.

You can only shout orders to one of them. Firing a beam weapon won't interfere with a laser the way it would for a particle beam... and your sister's funnels are recharging on your back. You're not sure you could get a funnel to either of them in time.

Only suggestion that I have to save both is to pre-fire a grenade or toss an activated beam shield into the trajectory of the shot going for Bong. Hell of a tall order, since we'll be the slower draw. I reckon that's why Carrina considered the funnels for it.

“A-2!” you bark even as the funnel leaves its rack behind your back. “Evade left... now!”

The shot aimed for the Stark Jegan misses cleanly. Your funnel is only about halfway there when the shot aimed at Bong's Jegan hits.

“Commander!” Lieutenant Harding shouts. “Fuck, he's gone!”

You knew that was going to happen... didn't you? your sister asks as she returns the funnel to its charging rack. The fire thins out, with only superficial damage to another Jegan in the Martian force. The enemy mobile suits begin to rally as you get in too close for many of Nelson's point defense turrets to concentrate fire properly anyway.

“Yeah,” you nod, comms briefly silent. “It was one or the other, or risk losing both.”

Then let's make it count.

“Always.”

“Concentrate fire on the main armament!” you order, turning all your own firepower to the task. “Get our fleet in close faster!”

It's not until the enemy's MS close in that you realize your mistake: the soldiers who have followed you into battle are mostly rookies who lack the awareness that you've gained through years of experience. The Jovian machines fall upon them like a pack of wolves, and the Jegans are slow to adjust to the new threat. Two of them are lost almost immediately, and the very same Stark Jegan you just saved is lost seconds after it unloads its missiles.

“Shift to covering!” Haman orders, using her funnels to fire on the Jovians, if for no other reason than to give the remaining Lunar and Martian mobile suits time to find blind spots in Nelson's fire to shelter in.

I said NO you fucking asshole!

With that outburst your sister absolutely eviscerates the last remaining EXAM suit with her funnels, pouring fire on it until nothing remains but dust and slag.

“What was that about?” Haman demands, as the engagement starts to shift back into your favor.

That bastard was trying to hijack our funnels this whole time... but the EXAM was having trouble beating a live newtype mind for control.

“That would've been nasty,” you grimace, adjusting your own fire to cripple a mega particle turret before it can fire on your remaining mobile suits.

Your own forces however have dwindled. Of the original force you sortied with only three of Everest's Jegans remain, and only two of the Minas Geraes' Anksha-types are left. Nine mobile suits are still active out of the twenty-three you started with... 60% casualties.

But the Nelson's forty mobile suits are destroyed or inoperable, and many of her guns are silent.

Dunno if it would be too much to ask to vent their small arms and ordinance as a prerequisite condition.

“Anksha team, escort the Everest's Jegans out of the AO,” you order, closing your right eye. “ReZel 2, take Lieutenant Carlyle.”

“Sericea moving in to target,” Rossweisse announces. “Tactical suggestions, Carya?”

You take a moment to consider the loss of life so far, then make your decision. “Nelson is to surrender and prepare to be boarded.”

“Alright, we'll move in,” Rossweisse replies. “Captain Pike, you'll be docking on the port side.”

“If they so much as twitch we're standing by,” Anders adds.

“Haman, we're the ones with the endurance,” you sigh, “we'll stand by to secure Nelson for docking procedures.”

“Roger that.”

Meanwhile, you hear Captain Pike's comms officer making the declaration over an open channel. “This is Minas Geraes, the Nelson is ordered to stand down and prepare to be boarded. Any hostile acts will be responded to by force. Message repeats...”

As the Minas Geraes approaches, two of the remaining turrets begin traversing to fire on her. But there are enough people who have the situation comprehensively handled that it isn't a problem. Rossweisse puts a solid slug into one turret, shattering its hull and venting its atmosphere into space, while you and Haman put several rounds into the other, enough to ruin the weapons tucked away inside the gunhouse.

“Message repeats,” Rossweisse states flatly across the same frequency as before. “Surrender your vessel.”

This time there's a response.

“Hold your fire...” the man requests, sounding utterly defeated. “We're surrendering, so just stop firing on us.”

“Why the change of heart?” you ask skeptically. “How do we know you won't attack our boarding party?”

“Because the Jovian Council has decided we would rather not be fired upon any more.”

“Minas Geraes has docking permission for our port airlocks.”
>>
