You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

The skirmish with the Zentradi over the automated mining platform ended in a rather one sided victory for NUNS. The majority of the attacking Zentradi were eliminated, with a few being captured, thanks to their morale being broken by Amy's song.

However, given you little "debriefing" with Karla, where she all but admitted that she was seeking to develop Amy into a living weapon, things had become... tense. Amy retreated back to her room once again and has come out or attempted to contact you since.

The Pacifica was going to arrive at its destination soon at Gateway, the primary settlement in Torman Fields. You didn't have a lot of time before needing to return to duty.

You decide that it was best to consult Dorothea with this. After all, she was the overall commander here, so her input would carry some weight.

Though, there was an issue of how exactly you would bring this up with her...

What kind of gift should we get Doro? I was thinking that we could get her a custom made rapier or sabre that's actually practical and looks good.

Technically Karla hasn't done, and isn't doing, anything wrong, yet. We have no case other than "she's making Amy uncomfortable".
Of course, if we take it to the same extreme as what we're about to complain about, "making Amy uncomfortable" is basically "sabotaging one of our main weapons". If Amy doesn't want to sing because of this, someone will be in deep shit in the end.

Sighing to yourself, you take out your phone and key Dorothea's private comm line that she had given to you after your first date together, as way to let her know if you wanted to talk about "personal" matters.

"Harry?" Your spirits are lifted somewhat when you hear Dorothea's voice. "What is it?"

"We need to talk." You sigh. "It's about Karla."

"...ah." Dorothea says simply in understanding. "In that case, meet me in my office. We can talk there."

"Got it." You nod as you pocket your phone and go on your way.

Dorothea's office the same as ever, decorated with all sorts of antique knicknacks. You're pretty sure most of them were reproductions, though. Not a lot survived the Zentradi bombardment of Earth. Dorothea, of course, is seated at her might oak desk, looking at you with a mix of curiosity and concern.

"So, what's the problem?" She asks.

"Me and Amy had a little talk with Karla." You explain as you slump down in one of the chairs across from Dorothea. "Of course, we had concerns about Karla's exact intentions with Amy's songs..."

"...and she did nothing to dissuade you of them." Dorothea finishes for you.

"Well... yeah." You nod.

"And how is Amy?" Dorothea narrows her eyes just a tad.

"Distressed, of course." You shake your head. "I dunno, Karla straight up told her she was being groomed as the ultimate superweapon."

"Which, of course, is exactly what we're doing." Dorothea points out. "That was and is the original intent of Tactical Sound Units."

"I get it, but Karla could have been a little more tactful in explaining it." You frown.

"It couldn't be that bad."

"She straight up said she wanted Amy to be another Sharon Apple. Both in power and in use." You say grimly.

Dorothea raises an eyebrow but doesn't react any further.

"Interesting. It sounds like she has intentions to use Amy on more than just the Zentradi."

"Or maybe she's got bigger plans than just defending a border colony." You point out.

"A distinct possibility." Dorothea admits. "I'm not sure what I can do about it at this moment, but my only suggestion is that you remain by Amy's side. I'm afraid you're her only pillar of emotional support at this moment."

"I don't know, she seemed to be warming up to you a bit when we were out together..." You point out.

"Allaying a teenage girl's fears about being turned into a super weapon to mindrape and control all of humanity as puppets is beyond me Dorothea. I need help. This needs at least two miracles to calm her down and I can only do one at a time."

Dorothea is taken aback at your words, and she's just left there blinking several times before her cheeks turn a light pink.

"I'll... give it more thought." She coughs. "But I think I might have a way to help Amy."

"Really?"

"Yes." Dorothea nods. "We'll be arriving in Gateway shortly, and it's a bit of an understatement to say that civilian morale is at a record low."

"Because of the Zentradi." You scowl.

"Yes." Dorothea nods again. "The Zentradi raids have caused miners and colonists from the outlying facilities and settlements to flee to Gateway for safety. While it was always a planned emergency measure, the entire facility is seriously overcrowded and supplies are stretched thin. They need something to raise their spirits."

"...like a concert." You conclude.

"Like a concert." Dorothea confirms. "I think it would be good to remind Amy that her skills are meant to help people, not terrorize them."

"Assuming Amy agrees to it." You grunt.

"Assuming she agrees to it."

"Don't worry, I'll keep an eye on her, too." You assure her. "I should get going."

You head straight back to Karla's lab, where you see the intelligence officer still poring over all of the raw data from Amy's performances. She pretends to only just notice your arrival, though you were pretty sure she already knew you were coming well in advance.

"Ah, Captain! So nice to see you so soon again!" She grins as she motions for you to come in. "How can I help you this fine day?"

"We're planning to do a concert for the people of Gateway." You say simply. "To raise morale."

"Excellent!" She claps her hands together. "I was thinking of doing the exact same thing! But that's not all you're here for, eh?"

Of course, she's waiting to hear what you have to say.

"I'm not sure if she's going to be in the mood though." You sigh.

"Don't be silly!" Lara laughs. "See you there in five!"

And then she hangs up. You have to remind yourself that Lara didn't know what just went down. With a sigh, you make your way to Amy's room, where Lara is already waiting for you.

"Jeez, Amy's in that mood again." She rolls her eyes. "Did something happen?"

"Long story." You grunt and knock on the door. "Amy, it's me. Can you open the door?"

There's a brief pause, but the door opens a crack and Amy peeks out.

"What's going on?" She asks suspiciously.

"Just wondering if you wanted to head out with me and Lara to check out Gateway." You tell her.

"Really? Why?" Amy raises an eyebrow.

Let's also let her know that it's just a regular concert. Karla has been told to back off with her whole "living weapon plan".

"Well, we're planning to do a concert for them." You say. "It would be good for you to get a feel for the place."

"What, so Karla can mind control them all or something?" Amy growls.

"Don't worry about that, Karla won't do anything to you." You assure her. "I had... a few words with her."

"Really?" Amy pauses.

"And the concert was actually the Admiral's idea."

"REALLY?" Amy's jaw drops. "But why?"

"Because the Admiral cares about you too. In her own way." You grin as you pat Amy on the shoulder. "So how about it?"

"Eeeeeeh, I guess I can give it a shot." She responds warily. "Should I like, go in disguise or something...?"

"Well, what do you think?" You ask her.

"Nnnnnnnn, I'm not really in a social mood right now." Amy grunts.

"I got a spare uniform you can borrow." Lara winks. "You can just pretend to be a pilot like us!"

"Heh... that'd be pretty cool." Amy grins a little.

And soon enough, you, Amy, and Lara are boarding the next shuttle out to Gateway. Looking out the viewports, you can get a better look at the surrounding area.

The Pacifica and her surrounding fleet could be see, hovering among countless asteroids and space debris of all sizes, ranging from ping pong balls to tiny planetoids. Fortunately, this area of the Fields was very stable, which was why Gateway was built here in the first place, so there wasn't really any risk of any of the ships getting damaged or destroyed by a stray rock.

"Hey, is that it?" Amy asks, pointing out her viewport.

You and Lara turn to look where she's pointing, and immediately, you see a massive, dome-like structure jutting out one of the larger asteroids. It reminded you of a NUNS colony ship, though obviously on a much smaller scale. Hundreds of shuttles, both manned and unmanned, continually flew in and out as they automatically carried out their duties.

"That looks real neat." Lara whistles.

"Wow, this is the first open space colony I've seen..." Amy says in wonder.

>Looks pretty homely, yeah.

"Looks pretty homely, yeah." You nod as the structure grows in size as the shuttle draws nearer and nearer.

"If I'm remembering correctly, it's supposed to house up to 200,000 people!" Lara adds as she looks at the brightly lit structure. "Well, maybe a little more now with all the refugees..."

"All those people crammed into that tiny place?" Amy whistles. "Dang..."

The shuttle then enters one Gateway's many landing docks and sets down. Once the boarding ramp opens, you're immediately hit with a wave of noise and hot, slightly humid air. You and Lara guide Amy down the ramp as the rest of the passengers hurriedly go about their business.

"So, uh, where do we go?" Amy asks you.

That's when you catch a glimpse of red. When your eye finally manages to lock on to it, you realize it's Dorothea and a small entourage of officers marching off too what looked like where the administrative offices would be. Going off to talk to the leadership?

"Hey! I found a map!" Lara reports, pointing to a holographic information station.

"Let's check out the primary hub." You suggest. "Probably the best place to get the measure of things."

"Sure thing!" Lara nods as she checks the map and then motions for you to follow her as she strides off.

"So what do you think so far?" You ask Amy as the two of you follow Amy.

"Pretty crowded looking." Amy frowns as she glances at the large numbers of people lurking about in the halls and corners. "Almost feels like I'm a sardine in a can."

"That's probably not too far off." You nod in agreement.

Finally, the three of you reach Gateway's primary hub, where all of the recreational and commercial areas would be located. Like most colony hubs, the area was circular, with a number of stores and vendors located on the outer ring of the circle, with the center being common open areas. Up above was a glass ceiling showing the expanse of Torman Fields. This was all no doubt to try to simulate an actual colony, and to try to make it look like the station was much roomier than it actually was.

Almost immediately, you could see that the central chamber was simply PACKED with people. Almost all the usable space was being taken up by tents and other makeshift habitations. The whole place really was starting to look more like a refugee camp than a mining colony.

The three of you push through the packed crowds on the walkway, and you get the distinct feeling that these people were not here to shop or have fun. More like just milling about since they had nothing better to do. At least the crowd seemed fairly orderly and there weren't any fights or crime. This was all well and good, since you could see the local security forces being completely overwhelmed with a crowd like this.

"Hey... do ya hear that?" Lara frowns.

"I'm hearing a lot of things." You blink. "You need to be more specific."

"Wait, I think I'm hearing, too." Amy blinks. "It sounds like music... no, it's MY music!"

"Huh? Is that so?" You grin. "Wanna check it out?"

"Of fucking course!" Amy nods as she takes the lead. You and Lara follow close behind her.

"So what do ya think? Fans? Music pirates?" Lara wonders.

"Just people who appreciate good music." You chuckle.

Sure enough, you wander out into the open common area, where you could see a number of people huddled around a single holoprojector. A fuzzy holographic Amy from the concert back on Nabaal strides back and forth, singing her electronic heart out.

And the crowd looks entranced by it. No doubt they didn't have much else to look forward to in the day, so Amy's music was providing them some modicum of comfort.

"Huh, so people really do listen to it..." Amy frowns.

"Of course!" You laugh.

"Come on, let's keep on moving." You grunt as you gently push Amy along. It was best not to dally around, in case somebody spots Amy and recognizes her. You're not actually sure what will happen in a situation like that and you didn't really want to find out, either.

Plus there was still so much more of the facility to explore...

The next area for you to explore was the residential sections. Here, things were far less open than the central hub. Instead, everything was ordered like apartment blocks, with rows and rows of doors stacked upon each other.

It was also just as crowded as the hub, with makeshift tents and shelters set up in any spot that conceivably had space.

And the smell was simply atrocious.

"Jeez, this place looks like a real dump." Amy mutters. "How long has it been like this?"

"Since the Zents came." Lara grunts. "Why else would everybody hide here?"

"Still," Amy wrinkles her nose. "You'd think the guys in charge would like... do something about it, right?"

"What can they do?" You shake your head. "Gateway is heavily overcapacity. This place was only supposed to house 200,000 people, but it looks like it's holding double, or even triple that. I'm not surprised if the local authorities are completely overwhelmed."

"Well can't the fleet do anything?" Amy wonders.

"Short of just evacuating the whole place? Not much." Lara sighs. "We can't afford to be giving away too much of supplies, either."

Unfortunately, seedy, overcrowded places like this were excellent breeding grounds for people will ill intent. As the three of you walk through the halls, you noticed quite a few strangers tailing your group. It started from a healthy distance at first, but you noticed they were steadily closing the distance.

Things were starting to get interesting now...
