Living on your own can be tough, were it not for the variety of locations to eat out at. Days pass by with almost no changes in your schedule: wake up, order in or go for a walk to pick up food, come home and repeat. It’s not like you struggle with money, your father is happy to throw some of his constantly growing wealth at you despite your attempts to distance yourself from him, but still the same thing day in and day out gets boring.

That’s until you decide to walk into one of the most run-down looking cafes you’ve ever seen, tempted by the sweet scent of a garden wafting out the door.
>>
It was a good night, she slept soundly, so why? Why was that incessant ringing never-ending? To make matters worse it came from the opposite end of the room and no one wanted to get up and answer a damn phone. But if she could just shut it off…

Groaning and brushing the mess of dark purple hair out of her eyes, the woman slid her feet into a pair of worn slippers and shuffled along the floor, reaching for the glaring screen of the phone. She didn’t even read the display name before declining the call and silencing the phone, sighing in relief as she fell back into her bed and back into a comfortable slumber.

“Hey Hana! You up!?”

The loud voice was soon accompanied by loud knocking. Oh god what kind of hellish morning is this. Hana just groaned loudly and turned over, ignoring the knocking and the subsequent unlocking of the door. Things went quiet, and maybe everything would work out after all.

“Rise and shine, Hana!” The cheerful voice, way too energetic for how early it was, slammed something metallic and ice cold onto the exposed neck of the drowsy woman. Hana shot up instantly into a sitting position only to fall back as her forehead made contact with the perpetrator.

“You motherfucker...” Hana groaned, nursing her aching head as she eyed her wake-up call. “It’s too early for this, what do you need me for, Ren?”

Ren chuckled, tossing the can in his hand to Hana as she fumbled with it a couple times before catching it. “I’ve finally got a day off, best bud! Thought we could hang. Go for a walk. Stuff our faces. I know you know all the best spots, you foodie.”

Hana was silent for a moment, examining the can of coffee before cracking it open and downing it with an appreciative grunt and tossing the now empty can into the small trash can beside the bed.

>”Sure thing, let’s get ready and go.”

With that little coffee buzz giving her a little burst of energy, Hana hopped from the bed and stretched. Ren gave a nod and stepped back to examine her room whilst she wandered off to change, sighing as he took in the takeaway boxes and last night’s dirty plates sitting in the sink.

“Have you never thought learning to cook would be a good plan yet?” Ren called out from beyond the locked bathroom door.

“Hmm. Not at all. Usually I prefer my meals to be edible,” Hana retorted. It doesn’t take long for her to walk out changed and hair tied back, ready for the day. “Let’s just get going. Give me that other can you brought, too.” Hana reaches for Ren’s backpack, furrowing her brow as he hopped back and held it just out of her reach.

“You can get it later, we’re going out to eat first.” Ren quickly turned and jogged out the door of the apartment, leaving Hana to fall behind as she locked the door and trailed behind Ren, who slowed his pace to match hers as they weaved their way through the crowds of the day. “So, oh great connoisseur of cheap eateries, where is the promised land that you shall guide me to today?”

“Well I felt like going a bit further than usual, see if there’s anything a little more interesting. Everything around here is getting a little stale, and all.”

“Like your leftovers?” Hana gently elbowed Ren at his comment before picking up the pace and continuing the walk in silence. Soon the familiar buildings faded and Hana paused to glance around.

“Let’s stop somewhere here,” Hana mumbled as she eyed the buildings. Some were homes but here and there she could spy chalkboards and banners announcing homes that were selling some sort of food, or entirely converted into some sort of eatery.

“Hey, do you think that one’s still...open?” Ren questioned, pointing at one of the buildings just up ahead. Even Hana had to pause and check it out. A little chalkboard sat out the front, most of the writing illegible and clearly not replaced for the day yet but the doodle of a coffee cup made it clear it was some sort of cafe. Though if it was open was another question. The door was open but with a couple windows boarded up in a hasty repair job paired with the silence it was hard to believe this place was selling anything.

“I’ve got no idea. But something nearby smells pretty nice,” she replied. As they got closer to the seemingly empty building, the smell got stronger until the source was identified as flowers lining every single inch of the window ledges within the building. “...Someone has to be taking care of those. Do you think it’s a flower shop?”

“No idea. They’re probably closed, let’s go somewhere else.” Ren began to walk ahead again, arms folded behind his head. “Coming, Hana?”

“Yeah, give me a sec, Ren. I’m kinda curious about this one.” Hana waved him off as she walked up to the open door and took a look at the interior. The smell of the flowers got even stronger and faintly she could hear the clinking of maybe plates or something coming from a doorway behind what looked more like a bar than a cafe. Weird.

“...Hello?” Hana called out, curious if any staff were even around and then things went silent, no more plates clinking. “...Guess not. Hey Ren wait up! I’m coming!”

Just as Hana turned to catch up with Ren, she yelled out in surprised as she was pulled back through the entrance of the building and stumbled, catching herself on one of the seats and turning her head to catch whoever had dragged her back. A pair of blue eyes stared back, too close for comfort before the girl stepped back and greeted Hana with a warm smile.

“If you’re here for something to eat, would you like me to seat you?” The girl questioned before gesturing to all the empty seats. Well, maybe it is a cafe after all.

“Hana are you alright? You just vanished back in and I...” Ren paused as he caught sight of the member of staff, silently sliding closer to you and pushing you forward. “I decided you’re right and we should definitely check this place out.”

At that, the girl perked up and bounced away, returning with two menus consisting of...mostly coffee and breakfast options, leading the two to a table and seating them. “I’m Tsubaki and I’ll be writing down your order. I’d totally recommend the pancakes and if you’re really hungry you should get the bacon and eggs too. Or if you just want a coffee or something go for it. Just let me know!”

Ren slowly nodded and passed the menu back. “I’ll take the pancakes...and the bacon and eggs and stuff. I’ll just drink water or something, though.” Tsubaki nodded and scribbled it down before turning to Hana.

Scribbling Hana’s order down too, Tsubaki collected the menus and skipped off, ringing a bell somewhere behind the counter and disappearing through the doorway as she called out to some currently unseen staff member. With the silence of the cafe, Ren and Hana heard every word.

“Hey Kane, I’ve got a present for you!”

“Listen if it’s another hug or something mushy like that I don’t want it. If you need something to do I’ll let you reorganize the chiller again,” the angry voice of what must have been Kane replied.

“No, no. Look, it’s an order. Can you make it pretty please?”

“You’re kidding right, someone stepped into this run down old place?” There was silence after that before a loud clanging of kitchenware carried through to the main area. “Well the grub’ll be right on out! Go make ‘em feel welcome and they’ll not know what hit ‘em!”

“On it!”

Over the next 20 or so minutes, Tsubaki practically danced between the space behind the counter, the kitchen and their table. She placed out the cutlery and some napkins shaped like...swans? Maybe a dog? Hana and Ren quietly tried to guess what kind of deformed animal it was supposed to be before the food arrived along with the drinks.

“Well, for how quiet this place is you sure serve a pretty plate,” Ren mumbled, examining the plate. Seems the lack of customers put him on the wary side of things, but the looks had won him over, and Hana too. Tsubaki went to sit some sugar and milk out for the coffee but Hana quickly waved them away and sipped at the black coffee. “You’d think you were a businessman with a deadline approaching with how much of that you drink.”

Hana simply shrugged before digging in.

“Oh wow. This is,” Hana paused, finishing her bite before grabbing another and another after that. “This is...the best breakfast I’ve ever had.”

“That’s a compliment from Hana, she’s eaten everywhere,” Ren jokes before quickly going back to his own plate. Seems he agrees with how quickly he clears the plate, unwilling to leave even a small crumb from the looks of it. Hana takes her time instead, finishing at a slower pace and requesting a couple refills of coffee along the way before leaving her plate in as equally a clean state as Ren’s.

Tsubaki bounced over and picked up their plates as soon as Hana ate the last bite, running them back through to the kitchen and showing off the clean plates to Kane, they supposed, who seemed to have a personal celebration with the clapping and all. Tsubaki stepped back out, notepad at the ready again.

“Would you like anything else today? Another meal? More coffee? A chat?” Her eyes begged for the two to stay a little longer, like this was her first customer in a while. That explained the lack of repairs.

> “We’ve got some time, let’s hang out here for a little Ren.”

Tsubaki clapped her hands together excitedly before pouring more coffee and water for the two, then pulling up a seat and leaning her head on her hands.

“Soooooo. I guess it’s my break now so what would you like to talk about? Or actually, let me start first! You two are totally a couple, right? You’re so close and all, and I bet you thought the flowers were super romantic. That’s one of the best things we hear about this place...when people come in.”

This whole time Ren has started choking on his water, pounding his chest as Hana can’t tell if he’s laughing under all that coughing or not.

Smiling silently, Hana slowly slides a hand over to rest on Ren’s as he tries to steady his breathing from the previous bout of choking.

“Oh yes, it’s so hard to find a nice quiet place where we can just enjoy each other’s company. Wouldn’t you say, love?” Emphasising the last word, Hana grinned as Ren pulled his hand away and almost tripped over his chair as he started quickly denying everything whilst distancing himself from Hana’s teasing. “Oh you’re not fun, Ren. And here you used to play along with that. Too old now?”

“Come on Hana, that was one time. Tsubaki isn’t interested in you,” Ren bashfully replies, settling back into his seat again.

Hana chuckles once more before turning back to Tsubaki, waving her hand in the direction of the boarded up windows. “So what’s the story with these windows? You get vandals around here often or what?”

Tsubaki shrinks back almost instantly, hands wringing a leftover napkin as she seems to look anywhere but at the two of them. “Ohhhhh, thoooose? Hmm, I dunno. They were just...like that when I came in one day. Our owner said she would try and get them fixed soon. Though we should juuust pretty them up or something, right? Paint pretty flowers on, and all.”

...She’s lying about not knowing. Or maybe she's really an airhead.

> “When can we meet the chef?”

Setting aside the previous question, Hana cleared her throat before continuing onto another subject.

“So listen, we really liked that meal so is there any chance we could meet your cook? Just to say thanks for such a good meal before we go?”

“Oh sure, let me just go get her. She loves when people eat everything!” Tsubaki rose up and turned to leave, pausing briefly to look back. “Juuuust be careful. She can cook great buuuut her temper can be crazy, sometimes. Almost like a demon,” she laughed before vanishing and talking to said chef, although this time her voice was too hushed to be heard.

“So you wanna pay compliments to the chef? Then shoot,” she spoke before she turned the corner. Arms folded, the chef Tsubaki must have called Kane stared them down with an intense look. Ren and Hana fell silent, Tsubaki glancing between the two of them and Kane with a confused look. It took a solid couple minutes before Hana spoke up.

“Erm, yeah. We really enjoyed your cooking. I eat out a lot and this is the best thing I’ve tasted in months.” She moved to offer her hand in a handshake but pulled back, wary of what Tsubaki said only to be pulled forward into a strong hug from the chef herself.

“D’you even eat proper meals? Yer practically skin and bones under all these baggy clothes!” Kane’s stern tone softens slightly, sounding more like a mother chiding her kid. Hana looked elsewhere, glaring daggers at Ren as he tried to hide his fits of laughter and failed miserably.

“Well maybe I eat a...few takeaways here and there.”

“More like that’s all she eats!” Ren chips in, yelping as Hana dug her heel into his shoe. Kane did not like the sound of that.

“Well, is it now...sit right there.” Kane sauntered back into the kitchen, soon returning with a small plate loaded with way more food than it was built to hold. “You. Eat.”

“S...sure, miss,” Hana mumbled, pulling her seat it and slowly beginning to eat her way through the pile of food.

The trio fell into silence as Kane left with a satisfied smile on her face, no doubt pleased that Hana had accepted the food and was eating it until she vanished back into the kitchen. At that Hana put down the cutlery and just stared at the still towering pile of food.

“Man, and here I thought you were about to attempt the food tower you’ve been so kindly gifted,” Ren joked before settling back into his seat and beginning to poke at the food, taking bites himself. “Even her leftovers taste like I’m sitting on a fluffy, happy cloud of rainbows and sparkles and stuff. Is this what cooking with love tastes like?” Hana was sure he was seconds from tearing up, were it not for the unstable pile of boxes walking into the store.

“Oh, it’s the owner!” Tsubaki stated as she moved forward to carry a couple of boxes and reveal the exhausted woman behind them.

“Oh, you’re such a life saver sweetie. I carried these all the way from the store. They were heavier than I expected,” she explained as she placed the rest of the boxes down, wiping some stray sweat from her forehead as she turned to face the two customers. “Oh...”

Slowly pushing the boxes behind the counter, the older woman chuckled slightly. Hana was sure she caught a glimpse of...wood in the boxes? “Please pay no mind to those. Just for some...personal DIY projects. I hope you enjoyed your meals and keep on working hard, Tsubaki,” She began slowly carrying the boxes around the back, carefully avoiding the neat stacks of glasses, though those were some near misses.

Hana just can’t bear to watch this, she swore she saw a couple of those mugs come dangerously close to falling off the counter and meeting a tragic end to their life as...a decoration at this point.

“Hey there, um, lady? Let me help you with those. Ren, grab a box.”

Before she could protest, Hana was already picking up a box and signalling for the owner to lead the way. Which she did, albeit with a little bit of hesitation. She led them into a small hall just through the doorway they had seen Tsubaki vanish into and directed for them to sit the boxes off in the far corner. And not a single mug was lost that day.

“I do appreciate the help, dears. Please, the meal’s on the house.” Loud coughing came from the kitchen as a pair of narrowed eyes peeked out.

“Ayame… Do you really think we can do that?”

“It’s only fair.” At that, Kane disappeared back into the kitchen and...was possibly practising drumming skills on the various pots and pans, Ayame sighed and walked on past. “Sorry about that, again I do appreciate the help.”

“Listen ma’am we’re super okay to pay for the food, it was great. Hell, pack us some leftovers,” Ren pitched in.

Wordlessly, Hana reaches into a pocket and pulls out her wallet. Before Ayame can say anything, Hana pulls out a stack of notes and grabs Ayame’s hand, slamming them into it and curling her fingers around it.

“That’s more than enough to pay for the food, plus a little extra tip. This is...definitely not what I planned to do for breakfast. The view through the windows is really pretty so if you could fix those windows soon I’d love to see more of the flowers from the outside.” Ayame stood there speechlessly, eyeing the money. It was...definitely more than enough for all that a few times over.

“Hana shouldn’t you maybe save your allow--”

“Dear old Dad won’t mind a little free spending, he’s not heard from me in a while, anyway.”

“I...I...” Ayame begins trying to form a sentence, holding the money close. It takes Kane appearing once again to snap her out of it as she whistles, clearly impressed at the amount.

“You can come back any time, kid. This’ll do us nicely,” Kane chuckled, slipping the money from Ayame’s hands and pulling out a phone. “Time to get me some new windows.”

“I...really appreciate that, dear. Please, meals are on the house. You don’t know how much this helps us out, truly.”

“Not if she tips this well!” Kane chimed in once more. “Mama needs a new set of wheels!”

“So then. We were curious, what is up with the windows anyway? Did you buy the place like that?” Hana questioned, Ren nodding in agreement.

“Well, it was a vandalism attempt but...”

“But…?” Attempt? Seems more like a success...

Ayame leans in close, pulling Hana closer to whisper in her ear. “But...I think it’s sabotage. A certain someone wanted to buy up some buildings around here, open up one of those fancy chain restaurants. Most refused and if any were running some sort of business people just...stopped coming. And more recently there’s been damage to the buildings, but apparently no one sees anything.”

“Oh...”

“Yeah so...you’re one of the first customers any of us has seen in…a couple weeks.” Oh god. “So really we appreciate this and if you can spare time we’d love to see you again.”

As soon as Ayame finished speaking, the silence of the cafe was interrupted by glass shattering and the screams of Tsubaki, soon followed by screeching wheels that faded as everyone ran back to the front of the store to investigate.

Looking to each other, Hana and Ren were the first to move into action. Sliding past Ayame they ran through to the front of the cafe and froze, staring at the gaping hole in one of the few surviving windows. Everyone was silent, only the wind blowing the surviving flowers in a gentle breeze, the rest crushed beneath a plain brick. It took a couple more moments before someone spoke up. It was Tsubaki, turning round with her eyes water and bottom lip quivering.

“I’m sorry, Ayame!” Tsubaki ran around the counter, quietly sobbing as the older woman gently stroked her hair. “I-I was just t-tidying the chairs up and I saw the car too late to stop them and they just sp-sped off,” she sobbed. Ayame sighed and just kept quietly messing with the girl’s hair. Kane had already wandered back off to the kitchen, the noise of the pots and pans continuing once again.

“Listen. I’d like you two to leave. I’m so sorry to trouble you with this drama but perhaps this is a sign that I should shut up shop,” Ayame eventually spoke, turning towards Hana with a sad smile.

Ren began to tug on Hana’s sleeve before leading her out of there. Neither of them spoke for a while, the silence growing awkward until Ren let out a large breath.

“Man, that was really...unexpected. Those girls are really in some shit. What kind of jerks think they can scare people out of their houses to make some quick cash?” Ren seemed pretty ticked off, despite his laidback posture.

“Hah, nice one-- You’re serious, aren’t you?” Ren stares Hana down, waiting on her to just laugh and say it was a joke. She didn’t. “Hana I know the food was great, but do you really think your human bank account is going to just let you throw money at complete strangers? Hell, I’m surprised he’s still giving you money.”

“Just watch. I might give him grief, but he still wants to think I’m his little girl,” Hana replied, waving her phone in front of Ren as she turned away, phone ringing.

“Hana this is still a stupid idea--”

“Heyyy, is this Mr.Ogawa’s...secretary? Great, could you be a friend and put him on? It’s Hana.” Hana went silent, nodding her head before furrowing her brow. “I understand, but if you want to tell him he missed a call from his only daughter...” Hana was cut off, expression relaxing. “Oh well if he’s out, just let him know I called. Ren raised an eyebrow at this. Sure, Hana’s Dad wasn’t the most generous soul out there but he’d never turned down a request from her. But...really? Hana finished up the call with a triumphant look on her face.

“Just give it a few minutes, she’ll phone him up.” So they waited, and soon enough some generic ringtone came through and Hana held her phone up to Ren’s face. “And I am now the proud owner of a nice 10k. He isn’t a fan of the community so it's only a fraction of what I could have gotten, but I don’t plan to lie and say I’m going to do what he does.”

“Alright then, lead the way!”

By the time they got back, the front door of the cafe was closed and once again it seemed like there was no one even here. Or so it seemed, until the hammering of wood broke through the silence as it seemed someone was boarding up the window. Sliding over to the window, Hana knocked on the remaining survivor of the attacks and waited for anyone to appear. Which turned out to be Ayame, blinking in confusion as she held onto the nails she was holding onto with her mouth.

“Ayame, can we come back in? We have a...proposition for you, I guess you could say,” Hana offered.

Ayame stared for a moment before silently opening the door just enough for the two to slide on through and take a seat at a table. “So, how can I help you? I really am sorry but we’re closing up shop...possibly perma--” Hana cut in, raising a hand to silence Ayame who seemed slightly offended at being interrupted.

“Like I said before. I have a proposition for you,” Hana began, tapping through a few things on her phone before sliding it towards Ayame who was quite clearly confused. “I’m willing to donate a sum of cash to this establishment to cover repairs and such.” Ayame’s eyes lit up as she caught on to what the numbers on screen were. “In return, I’d like to be classified as a co-owner of this establishment and be able to assist in improving it. I see potential in this little cafe, and wish to assist in its upkeep.”

“You mean...you mean...really?”

“Yes, I’d like to keep this place open.”

At that, Ayame knocked the seat over and rushed forward to pull Hana into a dangerously strong hug.

> Hug back.

Hesitating for a brief moment, Hana wraps her arms loosely around Ayame as they stand in even more silence. It’s only interrupted by a third body joining the hug as Ren and his goofy smile pops into the picture.

“This is real cute and all, guys. But maybe you want to explain it to everyone else watching?” It’s then that Ayame noticed that Kane and Tsubaki had came out from the back area, carrying some boxes containing frying pans and pots.

“Everyone, we have a change of plans!” Ayame announced loudly, waving the hammer she was still holding around...Hana stepped back. “We’re going to fix this place up and reopen with a fresh look! Phone up everyone else and get them over here for tomorrow, we’re holding a big meeting with...our new co-owner.”

“You mean we’re not closing down?” Kane asks, raising an eyebrow as she places the 3 heavily packed boxes on a table.

“Not at all! We’ve received a lovely donation from some new acquaintances, and together we’ll get this place back on its feet. Get that equipment back in the kitchen and let’s make some phone calls. We’re not giving up on this place yet.”

Tsubaki almost flew across the room, hurtling into Hana with enough force to knock her over were it not for Ren to...also fall over.

“Thankyouthankyouthankyou! This means a lot to me! To us!” Tsubaki held on a little longer before pulling Hana and Ren to their feet before going back to bouncing on the spot.

“If you can make it here for tomorrow for say...7am?” Ayame questioned, Ren easily agreeing whilst Hana was more...hesitant. “We’ll give you as much coffee as you want?”

“Sold. See you there.”

With a quick farewell, Hana and Ren went their separate ways at Hana’s apartment with a promise that Ren would make sure she was up. It was only once Hana had stepped into her apartment that she paused, feeling she had forgotten something.

“...He never gave me that other can of coffee, damn it.”
