Welcome to the beginning of Grimdark Quest, a grounded and immersive quest taking place in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium.

>What makes it different than the other Warhammer quests on the board?
Well unlike Penal Regiment or Renegade Regiment, this will be a more traditional Main Character focused quest, with experimenting with weaving freeform elements into the narrative later.

>So what now?
Well, the goal of the quest is to offer a look into 40k that *you* want to see. This means placing your vote on the poll here for where you want our character to start their career and life; https://www.strawpoll.me/15943616

Keep in mind that just because the MC starts as a lowly Guardsman Private, Ganger Mook, craven Acolyte, or middling Datasmith, doesn't mean the narrative can't take them to the heights of the Inquisition or the depths of Chaos and anywhere in between. The result of the vote simple determines the kind of MC we create and their environment at start.

Poll is open now and will close at 11:00 AM Saturday, EST.

Join us discord as well, and be part of the conversation: https://discord.gg/FnZykc

Discord is thinking either TS,IG,or NL CSM
>>
>>2669809
>discussion about a choice in the thread
>happening in the Discord
And THIS kind of faggotry is why Discords for quests are bad. As a form of containment for shitposting, great, go nuts. But y'all assholes are having a discussion that belongs in the fucking thread, off-site.
>>
>>2669809
>discord
>Thousand Songs, whatever IG is or Night Lords

Screw that if we are doing CSM then as the first person to bring it up in the thread I vote we do a Red Corsairs edgy raider quest
>>
>>2669935
I mean the vote is on strawpoll and we're not deciding what type of csm yet so its just speculation
>>
>>2669935
It's pretty quiet. Mostly it was just discussion on what kind of thread it was going to be, free form or more of a traditional quest and whittling down the potential candidates.

I mostly plan on using the discord to let people know when a new thread is up and out of context conversation. And shitposting.

There's no harm in joining.

>>2669941
Well, once a winner is declared I plan on making a good ole /tg/ Roll Thread, where we use the dice and 1d4chan charts to roll up our planet, regiment, chapter, gang, whatever. Of course player and QM fiat are going to be king, so if we get Ultra Successors or Slaaneshi warband, or death world and there's a hard outcry we can reroll or simply choose our own path. But in my experience, rolling typically ends up in some pretty fun results
>>
>>2669969
Still would rather we voted rather than roll
>>
>>2669994
Think of the rolls as prompts and less hard fast rules. I always try to see if a good idea can be made from the rolls given, but sometimes you have to go off script, so to speak
>>
>>2670071
Well unless the rolls go off the wall crazy (I want to keep all rolls vetoes are for wimps) I am gonna vote that we play a biker.
>>
>>2669432
>with experimenting with weaving freeform elements into the narrative later.

I don't know why you took the time to try and differentiate yourself from those other two quests and then said this.
>>
>>2669432
Well, bounty hunter sounded fresh for 40k. Of course, I'd sooner have voted for ganger over faggot CSM so I'm going to have to say your choice to use strawpoll was shit.

>>2669935
100% agreed, discord is nothing but some bullshit. All that comes of it is backroom deals and faggotry, and excludes people who don't want to deal with the faggotry from the discussion.
>>
>>2670082
Trying to accommodate people that weren't interested in the Lore-lite and less atmospheric tone of those threads but were even less so interested in single focus MC quests. If I can't make it work, I can't make it work, but I think its worth thinking about.

>>2670094
Well it's a tie between Ganger and CSM, so I don't think you're fair to be upset. The poll stops tomorrow, so it's anybodies game. Except Space Marine. Probably.

As for Discord, it keeps the thread clear of out of context discussion, and lets me keep people up to date with threads, as well as recieving comments, criticism, and critique without derailing the thread
>>
OP the invite expired. You gonna post a new one soon?
>>
>>2670174
>Well it's a tie between Ganger and CSM, so I don't think you're fair to be upset.

I say it's shit because I can't change my vote to help insure something that I want to participate in wins.

>>2670785
To be completely fair, only the faction is Straw poll, the rest will be in thread. And the idea started on discord, so it seemed fair to have a discord for it. And it's a good communication tool and keeps OOC conversation out of the quest

your gang has democratically elected leadership , consisting of a council of 5 master gentlemen. they then elect among themselves a head gentleman, usually the one with the most fabulous mustache. you are in the running for a council position, but are worried about your chances due to a recent mustache accident.

All right hive scum and gang bangers, every crew has a turf, and it's time to decide what ours is. Using the Dark Heresy planet generator (https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Planet_generator) we're going to roll up our world. Once we've rolled for our planet, we can tweak details and fluff it out. After that, we're going to co-opt the Hua Yuan Gang Generator (https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Hua_Yuan#Gang_Creation_Table) to do the same for our gang.

For starters, roll me a 1d100, and we'll decide what kind of world our planet is.

Rolled 84 (1d100)

>>2673751
So Developing World...
>>2673759
And a Death World...

We have some options, either/or, maybe a combination? Who knows, we can fluff that out at the end. Let's move on.

Roll me 3d10+15 for average technology level of our world
>>
Rolled 2 + 15 (1d10 + 15)

>>2673961
I mean gangers make more sense on a developed world, suppose it doesn't mean it can't be all fucked up and apocalyptic though.
>>
Rolled 3, 3, 1 + 15 = 22 (3d10 + 15)

>>2673961
>>
ok so how do you want us to roll for this stuff?
>>
>>2673976
So the average is industrial. I'm going to exercise some QM fiat and say that this the lowest level of technology, and most common to the lower levels of society, but the world has low to mid Imperial technology where it matters. Our Gangsters will mostly likely be more familiar with revolvers than las-guns, by and large.

Roll me a 1d100 for the size of our star. This is going to dictate how alone we are in the galaxy, and how notable we are in the Imperium.
>>
Rolled 37 (1d100)

Options field. Type "dice+(x)d(y)+(z)" x being the number of dice thrown, y the face of die, and z being the modifier if any are needed. It's in the 4chan FAQ

>>2673990
This would be a moderate star, about the size of Terra's star, perhaps slightly bigger. We'd be of middling importance, not a world of particular note or inconsequence. We mostly likely have a handful of neighbors and deal with a few of them.

>>2673991
This would be a small sun. We'd be a back water world with little Imperial support and outside contact. We would have few neighbors, if any at all.

>>2673997
This is a large star, making us more notable as a system with a more robust populace and economy. We'd have a good number of neighboring populated worlds, and Imperial trade and travel would make contact and communication standard and vital.

Roll a 1d4 for our Segmentum. This will allow us to better gauge who we will have contact with, friend or foe

No, are you averaging? Do you just want one roll? When you want multiple do you want everyone to roll one, one person to roll them all, or everyone to roll them all at one time?

>>2674046
>>
>>2674062
>>2674061
>>2674082
That's a surprise.
>>
>>2674061
>>2674062
Segmentum Obscurus, spooky. Roll me a 2d10 to establish Administratum presence on the planet.

>>2674062
Once we're done rolling, I display the collected results in a summary post. From there we fluff out the planet and gang, as well as other necessary bits, using our rolls as guidelines or writing prompts. So don't worry about that just yet.

>>2674074
Assume you're the only one rolling. So if multiple dice are asked for. Roll them all. I'll take the first three results into a summary post for us to deliberate and fluff with at the end. Or I'll simply use QM fiat like I did for the tech level to make something more amicable to the running of the quest. Stone Age Raiders isn't exactly who won the poll, but having areas of the planet be heavily industrial is still within the limits of Hive World. Give or take some lasers.

>>2674082
Obscurus again. Guess it was meant to be. Now the 2d10, if you please
>>
Rolled 5, 3 = 8 (2d10)

Rolled 10, 8 = 18 (2d10)

>>2674111
Ok then.
>>
>>2674115
Slight. Specific duties; not involved in wider planetary affairs.

>>2674126
Small. Involved, but quietly and unobtrusively.

>>2674127
Notable. A powerful force in its own area of expertise.

Big range there. Either not there at all, or hyper focused. Hows about 3d10 minus 5 for Arbites presence
>>
>>2674167
>>
Rolled 8, 5, 5 = 18 (3d10)

>>2674167
>>
Rolled 10, 7, 4 - 5 = 16 (3d10 - 5)

>>2674167
>>
>>2674207
Well taking five from that result, that gives us 13. Moderate. Has offices and planetary duties, and are widely known.

And >>2674292 as Notable. Either way, the Arbites have a firm presence, and our climb to riches and respect isn't going to go unchallenged by the Law.

How's about Telepathica presence? This is really going to say how well the world communicates with places beyond the system. 3d10-5 once more please
>>
>>2674332
>>
Rolled 6, 5, 8 + 5 = 24 (3d10 + 5)

>>2674332
>>
Rolled 9, 6, 9 - 5 = 19 (3d10 - 5)

>>2674332
>>
Oh wow, suprising rolls here, but maybe not considering we're in Obscurus
>>2674425
Moderate.
>>2674439
Major. A powerful and influential force throughout the planet.

Either because of our place in the galaxy, or something of importance on the planet, the Astra Telepathica has a respectable presence on the planet. Perhaps the planet is a breeding ground for psykers, or is in proximity to a world that is.

Give me a 1d10-2 for Astronomica presence

>>
>>2674536
You need to do "dice+1d10+-2"
>>
>>2674554
>>2674526
Alright. In Obscurus, with the high presence of Imperium Psykers, there's bound to be an Inquisitorial eye upon the planet.

Roll me a 3d10-5 to see just how invested in the world the Inquisition is.
>>
Rolled 1, 4, 4 - 5 = 4 (3d10 - 5)

>>2674626
>>
Rolled 9, 2, 1 - 5 = 7 (3d10 - 5)

>>2674626
>>
>>2674659
>>2674663
Thankfully, the Inquisition seems to have more pressing matters than our rock. Either the Arbites are able to keep things well enough in line or the Inquisition simply has viewed what may have been a precarious situation as not a problem.

What about the Mechanicus? Developing many parts of the Death World may be, but this *is* a Hive Ganger quest. Let's see just how prevalent the Cog Boys are

Roll me a 2d10-3
>>
Rolled 1, 9 + 3 = 13 (2d10 + 3)

>>2674718
>>
Rolled 10, 4 - 3 = 11 (2d10 - 3)

>>2674718
>>
>>2674756
>>2674775
Moderate. Enough to keep the hives alive, the PDF operational, and the ships running. Everyone knows about the Adeptus Mechanicus, even if they don't see the benefits of their work.

Finally, another 3d10-5 for Ministorum strength.
>>
Rolled 7, 2, 1 - 5 = 5 (3d10 - 5)

>>2674994

>>2675084
Hmmm, Slight to Small, but I'm going to bump that up to Small to Moderate (Considering strong Telepathica presence and us being in Obscurus). The Faith is present, but manifests itself strangely outside the purview of the Ministorum.

With various organizations out of the way, let's talk about how big the planet is. Give me 1d100+25
>>
Rolled 11 + 25 (1d100 + 25)

>>2675115
>>2675215
>>
>>2675125
This would give us a Small planet, which wouldn't really give a lot of room for a Hive...

>>2675235
This gives us a MASSIVE planet, several times larger than Holy Terra. Lets go with this one.

Roll me a 1d100+25 for seasonal variation. This will dictate how brutal our temperatures are, and being a Death World, we might want to go towards the extremes
>>
Rolled 59 + 25 (1d100 + 25)

>>2676108
>>
>>2676129
A Large Axial Tilt means a sizable difference between seasons, 40 degrees of difference seasonally, in the negative and positive. Brutal winters and searing summers, spring and autumn give a reprieve from the seasonal extremes.

Roll me a 1d100+50 for length of day and night
>>
Rolled 28 + 50 (1d100 + 50)

>>2676131
>>
>>2676135

>>
Rolled 53 + 50 (1d100 + 50)

>>2676182

>>2676191
22 satellites? Do we roll for each one of those? Do some of them have atmosphere or ressources?
>>
>>2676193
>>2676217
I don't think I'm going to waste time rolling for each of these. It may be more judicious to simply fluff them out, or at least a few. If there's a heavy presence of Arbites, Telepathica, and Mechanicus here, they may not even be stationed on the planet, instead opting to occupy a single moon, or have a moon to themselves. We may have distant relations with the Ministorum not because of the absence of the faith on world, but because one of the satellites is a shrine world, or cemetary world. Our gangers will interact with the satellites infrequently, if at all, especially in the beginning.

I'm not going to bother rolling for Gravity or Length of Year for similar reasons. Its largely erroneous and won't affect the plot, or if it does will only needlessly complicate things.

On that note, let's see how necessary those Hives are by rolling for atmosphere by rolling 1d100+10
>>
Rolled 37 + 10 (1d100 + 10)

>>2676229

Well we certainly got fitting results. Hills and Grasslands are definitely in, and funnily enough those together make moors and fens. Swamps are definitely in as well.

Active Volcanoes, Deserts, flat rock, barrens and columns can certainly be together. The planet has certainly a respectable amount of geographic diversity.

On another note; This place is insane. Pleasant English country side and ÃœBERMURDERSTAN in the same areas.

I have to imagine that the places with Volcanoes and barren rock are safer due to there simply being no killy beasts. The volcanoes and swamps may lend to the deadly atmosphere

*Twenty-two* billion people. Now this is a massive planet, several times Terra, with as many dozen satellites. So this may not be as intimidating a number as it may sound, but also considering the planet being a death world, population density may be very high indeed in some places, or collected into a massive Mega City.

Now to talk about planetary society. The Emperor cares little about how we rule each other, so let's roll for it instead; 1d100, if you please.

Now let's talk about the planet defenses. If you look at the Planet Generation chart, the defenses part is a bit, uh, dense. However. We can cut that down a bit and just roll for overal force size, and overall force quality, and distribute that amongst enforcers, PDF, local militia, planetary navy, and other such defenses.

So roll me a 3d10 for force size

60 indicates Spacer, so most likely satellite dwellers, and 30 indicates nobility.

Again, these are rolls with a lot of interesting synergy, and I see no reason not to use them in conjunction, but we'll see about that come fluffing time. Perhaps two different major Regiments from different satellites or satellite clusters, one male and one female. Again, we'll see.

Since both Casteborn and Nobility were rolled, I'll skip recruitment nature. For kicks and giggles, let's roll homeworld terrain. If they match a terrain on the world they can be sourced from that area, and if not that can perhaps be the terrain of the satellite of origin.

For that, give me a 1d100

>>
>>2678151
Well there is talk of two different types of regiments, I'm thinking one planetary/hive nobility at least. Something like that from one of the satellites would be interesting. Say a dead moon partially made into a space station or something providing a void specialty regiment. Perhaps having heavy concentrations of a rare mineral necessitating a heavy investment into infrastructure.
>>
how about having the specialized Las-Gun be Stormfront Lasgun (has bajonets), a Death Light (more power-hungry and slower, but delivering a stronger punch) or a Minerva-Aegis Las Carbine (has a faster attack rate)? The Minerva-Aegis Las Carbine is rare/expensive and would fit to a noble regiment.
>>
So there's been a lot of rolls and crazy stuff for this planet, I think before we launch into the final stage of rolling up our gang and finally fleshing out the main character.

I like the mortuary moons idea, several chambers of the Adeptus Terra could make the crypt moons final resting places of honour, or for souls lost fighting the horrors of the Segmentum, thus the shitloads of psykers, most probably dead of Daemon mind rape.

I also think the two major regiment types could be the best way to go about it. The first is from the jungle moon, which could be a SoB cemetary and be attended by a sisterhood there. The women of that planet of the warrior caste, which could be nobility by way of supplying guards and vassals to the main planet monarchy, are conscripted into a SoB aligned regiment. Their specialized gear could be blessed flamer-lasguns, or las snipers. This explains the shock and awe, well disciplined nature, and fanaticism.

The other can be a "penal" regiment from the main planet, where the War Boys of the nomadic outcasts are scooped up enmasse, and shipped out to battlefields. They can be just as fanatical, but weird about it, thinking that they will be resurrected in death by the Emperor. Traditional weapon can be Rage (video game) boomerang/Krull Glaive or explosive javelins. They can also take up the vast majority of the "industrial" technology niche, with cars and trucks and revolvers. The penal system can just kick people out of the hives, and let the nomads or planet take care of them. If they don't die to toxic fogs or whatever else is out there, the nomads can get them. And even if the nomads take them in, the crazy bastards are always waiting for the Administratum to pick them up, give them lasguns and chimera's, and send them to battle.

As for the planet, there's definitely swaths of beautiful untracked land, maybe around the equatorial band. Maybe things can get a little more harsh towards the poles, or maybe the opposite, where volcanic ash makes for fertile land far enough away
>>
>>2679673
Can't say I care for those regiment ideas
>>
>>2679673
The uninhabitable equator could come from vulcanism there, which might be caused by tidal heating.
See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_heating_of_Io
This might be caused by a nearby (non-radiating) stellar object, like a black or brown dwarf.
>>
>>2679685
What do you propose?

>>2679694
That's sounds pretty cool. The planet being segregated by a violent equator, with the land getting more and more pleasant as it reaches the poles. Although I'm sure there's tons of nasty creatures in the "nice" places.
>>
>>2679705
this was me>>2677852

The second regiment I don't know really, "war boys" type regiment might not be too bad, but seems rather weak for something a hive world should put out. Though, I guess having crazy deadly flora/fauna might could make for some hardasses out in the wastes. Explosive tipped javelins and slug guns, war rigs and motorcycles. Hell, I've talked myself into digging it.
>>
>>2679673
I think we should have a single regiment, picking the best of the bits we just rolled for, for example, a Heavy Infantry regiment recruited from the noble and warrior castes of one the Desert moons (like maccabian jannisaries or tallarn desert raiders), specialising in ranged shock and awe tactics with their blessed hotshot lasguns, because they're nobles and warrior caste, who can be trusted with expensive toys. Fanatically loyal who fight to prove their homeworld is the best and that they are the best of their homeworld. Allied with the Adeptus Sororitas, who can appreciate fellow zealots when they see them, and have been known to have fought against Eldar particularly well in several of their previous campaigns.

I disagree. Having an elite unit off world with strong ties to the larger Imperium and the mainland one be scrapped up savages is yet another dig on the poor and destitute of the world.

Noble warriors on the lush jungle planet (ignoring that it's most likely dangerous in it's own right) are rewarded for the circumstance for their birth while nomads and criminals are punished for theirs, used as chattel and used up.

Remember, the goal isn't to make a totally badass regiment, but create conditions on a world where crime can flourish. And that comes down to socio-economics. It also opens up narrative possibilities, since getting captured by Arbites isn't a death sentence, instead it means that we take a trip down Fury Road to find our way back.

I think it makes more sense to have noble warriors coming from the hives proper, but the war boys thing I like too. The idea of Fury Road and Judge Dredd '95 mixed together sounds fun.

Discord always ends up with some faggotry. Quests were getting along just fine before discord came about, and things would have been just fine without it.

I agree that we need there to be more crime. Should this crime be organized, mafiaesque, or should it be more chaotic?
>>
>>2680624
Big as the world is I don't think there can't be a little of everything.

So, when are we going to do some more rolling?
>>
>>2680624
>>2680645
I agree. The planet is absolutely massive. Days last twice as long as a Terran day, sometimes more. The diverse range of biomes is evidence of size.

Think we can organize crime by areas of population. I'm thinking four equatorial Hives, flaking the active zones, not necessarily in them, antipodal to each other, as well as antipodal hives on the poles. One of the equatorial hives I feel should be destroyed, creating a post apocalyptic environment for mutants, abhumans, and beastmen to occupy, relatively safe from human interruption.

There can be a seventh "hive" more akin to a Megacity, sprawling from a proper hive. My thoughts to this one is that it takes up a large majority of coastline to the ocean, again much like Mega-City One. This would be the major population center.

The nomads would act as highway men, raiders, smugglers, traffickers, and cults. Those who have ships can fulfill piracy roles on the seas. Being industrial level at most, having steam ships or destroyers would be pretty cool.

In the hives, I think there would be criminal mono-cultures, different gangs but similar structure. The Bloods and Crips are enemies, but are structured and operate similarly. The same with Cartels and mafias. I think the Megacity would have greater criminal diversity.

I've also been thinking about Thrull as a planet name.

>>2680645
I want to fluff out the world a little more before rolling up the gang, and I want to find a good system to roll up a character on
>>
>>2680769
I wouldn't suggest getting too heavy on a system unless it's easily recognizable like ASOIF's own. Most people arent going to want to or spend time learning a new one imo
>>
>>2681175
Nah, just a rules lite Only War hack or something, using the stat system as a measure of the main characters skills and talents. I might crib upgrade paths

Really, the mechanics of the quest will be as lite as any other, but evoke the feeling of playing a FFG 40k game without the fuss
>>
I'm confused, will we be starting as a guardsman, or a hive ganger?
>>
>>2681675
We should've had the choice to be a Knight Scion. It might've been pretty cool.
>>
>>2681675
A Hive Ganger. I'm trying to get our exported regiments fluffed out a bit since their tactics and culture will often trickle down to the PDF and enforcers, who we'll more often than not be dealing with
>>
Idea; we try to become an inquisitor's acolyte, then almost any career path is open to us from there, even if the career path is just a cover for being an inquisition agent. Before anyone says anything, I'm well aware that it will be no small task to go from Hive Ganger to Throne Agent.
>>
>>2681878
How long is that going to take?
>>
>>2682133
Not long at all. Considering 80% of this is going to be making shit up as I go along. And I remembered enough of character creation for a 40k rpg that we can roll straight into it once we're done.

My only thing is that it seems that people aren't too interested in the whole fluffing bit, but I have enough here to flesh out the planet if need be. So if people would rather leave the fluffing wholly up to me, then all that's left is rolling up the gang
>>
>>2682353
Well, give us some examples of what you'd like help fluffing out.

>GRAVITY: Normal

>ATMOSPHERE: Normal, with occasional radiation storms and noxious miasma around swamped ideas.

>HYDROSPHERE: Average. Planet has three major oceans; Alacritic, Medic, Barathic.

>TERRAIN: Equator is extremely geologically active, with volcanic mountain ranges, plateaus, messas, igneous valleys, and massive cave systems. Landlocked areas around the equator are typically arid barrens and deserts. Large river deltas and brackish swamps create lush hills and moors away from the equator, with elevation decreasing and forests gaining in density towards the poles.

>CLIMATE: Average, with largely humid and extremely hot summers and biting winters. The Autumn seasons have the most agreeable weather in most populated areas.

>NATIVE FLORA AND FAUNA: The Fauna of Thrull are typically dangerous and hearty creatures. The vast majority of life forms are large predatory felines, arthropods, feathered reptilians, crocodilians, and avians. Most animals on Thrull are at least partly omnivorous and sizable. A great degree of flora on Thrull is grasses and field flowers, with titanic trees at the poles. Parasitic mosses and fungal lifeforms are also in abundance.

Cont
>>
>>2685631
>COUNTRIES AND CONTINENTS: Thrull is divided into five major landmasses, separated by the oceans and equatorial volcanic ranges, although some consider there to be only three continents, while others assert six, counting a partly submerged landmass in the Medic Ocean. The population centers are six, formerly seven, major hives, Hive Infestum having suffering massive infrastructure failures and collapsing, forcing residents to evacuate and displace. Three, excluding the ruins of Infestum, are located nearly antipodal to each other near the equator, either below or above it. The remaining equatorial hives are Barathrum, Peruro, and Caminus. These hives are generally for resource requisition and manufacture, the industrial back bone of the planet. Two hives occupy the poles, Kaelus at the north, and Exult at the south. These are the palaces of high ranking individuals, planetary nobility and stationed Adeptus Terra officials. Dominating the southwestern coast of the northwestern hemisphere is Kanus City, a massive mega-city spilling from Hive Reliqua at the epicenter of the city. By far the largest populated area on the planet, Kanus City, referred to commonly as the Sprawl, is the cultural heart of Thrull. Born from necessity after the explosion of Hive Infestum centuries ago, the displaced hivers built up the area about Hive Reliqua, and an influx of semi nomadic exiles allowed the area to prosper and survive. Eventually the under and lower hive was flushed out to give higher status hivers greater room to live, and Kanus City was born. Centuries of booming trade and populace have made the city stretch across thousands upon thousands of kilometers, and soaring hundreds into the sky, even encroaching on the Medic Sea itself. Other smaller populations exist, but are typically semi nomadic or seasonal.

>POPULATION: 22 Billion, approximately 15 billion live in Kanus City, and each other hive housing 1.3 billion, with the rest of the population lives as scattered nomads and raider clans.
>>
I think that will do to for surface level fluff, unless anyone has anything to add, or anything that seriously is unsightly. Speak now or forever hold your peace.
>>
I'd like some weird Xenos ruins scattered around the planet and some Mechanicus space mining activity in orbit. Can we have this?
>>
>>2685675
Penal colony on one of the moons, shipped from other places? Ogryns? Sea monsters? Creepy things in the caves?

I don't quite get cemetery worlds really.
>>
>>2685631
Can we exchange some of the naturally habitable satellites used as cemetary worlds against agri worlds with occasional incursions of feral orcs or feudal worlds with higher than average numbers of mutants and psykers? I have the feeling that just having cemetary worlds might limit the opportunities for story telling. Some of the uninhabitable satellites might also be borderline habitable, e.g. barren wastelands; remains of a nuclear war. Maybe they were used as defence outposts before the system was conquered by the Imperium of Mankind.
>>
Perhaps one or two space stations might also orbit the planet, they could act as the Arbites main base or used to account for the Inquisitions "small" presence there, like an inquisitorial research station.
>>
>>2685707
Seconding this
>>
>>2685707
Mmmaaaaybe one or two of the moons have xenos archeological sites, but I'd like to keep Thrull relatively untamed. Mining operations on the other moons are definitely a thing.

>>2685710
Lunar penal colony on a planet that exports penals doesnt make a whole lot of sense. However I can concede that having penals be shipped to mining and agri moons would be good. I don't see any reason to have native Ogryns, but Thrull does have it's own mutant and abhuman populations. The seas of Thrull are chock full of giant crustaceans, merpanthers, fungal man'o'war, and other nasties. Thrull proper already has creepy things in caves.

>>2685849
As above. But I'd like to emphasize that the quest will start, and due to sheer size and the scope of the narrative, never leave the Sprawl. The Mortuary Moons of Thrull are window dressing, and will likely never come into play. I can see multiple moons having agri components, acting as a part of the judiciary system. The moons are minor, and the planet has much of what you want if not in content in theme. I want to avoid straight up Xenos. The Polar Hives and Kanus City have abnormal psyker output. And just because they're naturally habitable doesnt mean any of the other moons aren't at all

>>2686035
I don't see why a massive planet with 22 satellites would need space stations, but if they're there, no one knows about them.

I've avoided /qst/ because of how slow it is. What a weird feature.
>>
So everyone is good to go on Thrull, let's roll up our gang.

Roll me a 1d100
>>
Rolled 6 (1d100)

>>2686670
Could you please tell us what we're rolling for in advance?
>>
>>2686783
No problem. This is for what kind of gang we are. You've gotten Communal: Naturally occurring gangs that come from a sense of community, desire for prosperity, or simply as a way of life.

We're going to be using this chart https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Hua_Yuan#Gang_Creation_Table

Now 1d100+10 for gang size
>>
Rolled 61 + 10 (1d100 + 10)

>>2686844
>>
>>2686847
As befitting the Sprawl and Thrull as a whole, the Gang is large, but do doubt dwarfed by other outfits.

Roll me 10d10 to see our actual numbers
>>
Rolled 6, 4, 3, 7, 1, 5, 5, 5, 1, 1 = 38 (10d10)

>>2686866
>>
>>2687031
A sizable force of 38,000, either true blue gangers, informers, distributors, or sympathizers, we have quite a few to our name.

Roll me a 1d100+10 to see the size of our turf
>>
Rolled 83 + 10 (1d100 + 10)

>>2687066
>>
>>2687075
Our reach spreads across 2d10 Hab Blocks
>>
Rolled 3, 5 = 8 (2d10)

>>2687176
>>
>>2687198
8 blocks of Kanus City are directly under our control. A good stronghold for our activities.

Run me 2d100 for special equipment
>>
Rolled 60, 54 = 114 (2d100)

>>2687240
>>
>>2687241
Same result, re-roll
>>
Rolled 10 (1d100)

>>2687276
>>
>>2687280
Tattoos and Traditional or Unconventional weapons.

Roll 1d100+10 for legal status
>>
Rolled 4 + 10 (1d100 + 10)

>>2687465
>>
>>2687467
As far as the enforcers and Arbites know, we may as well be a book club. Either that or influence or abuse of legal loopholes is keeping us safe from legal recourse. We're in the clear, for now.

Give me a 1d100-10 for secrecy
>>
Rolled 64 - 10 (1d100 - 10)

>>2687510
>>
>>2687529
Quiet. People know we exist, but we've laid low and out of harm's way.

2d100 for influence demographic
>>
Rolled 38, 92 = 130 (2d100)

>>2687547
>>
>>2687553
Blue Collar Workers: The laborers of the Hive owe you some favors, whether they like it or not.

Informant Network: Your gangs agents are everywhere, from the Enforcers, the local bureaucrats, the admistratum and manufactorum, to even the rare inquisitor.

1d100 for gang ambitions
>>
Rolled 50 (1d100)

>>2687569
I'm liking this so far.
>>
Rolled 62 (1d100)

>>2687569
So I'm seeing we're tied into labor unions n such, i see a jimmy hoffa vive. Could dig it real well if we roll merc/private security business later
>>
>>2687594
Blood Rivalries: Ancient family feuds give way to full fledged factions, hellbent on destroying their sworn enemies.

Greymane or Battleborn?

Roll me a 1d100 for membership dedication
>>
Rolled 17 (1d100)

>>2687644
>>
>>2687652
Loose Association. This may be the cause of our inflated numbers, but lack of dedicated gangers creates a plethora of deniable assests.

1d10 for demeanor.
>>
Rolled 2 (1d10)

>>2687659
>>
>>2687661
Well fuck. We're the good guys lads.

Magnanimous: Members spend big in little shops, tip generously, and prop up businesses of their own. Some are even known to do more direct acts of charity.

1d100 for leadership
>>
Rolled 67 (1d100)

>>2687673
>>
>>2687677
Cell Structure. We protect our own, and hold down our turf, but loose membership and decentralized leadership structure makes us all but bulletproof from crackdowns.

Now for gang assests. We're going to roll 2d6 five times. So start with one 2d6
>>
Rolled 4, 4 = 8 (2d6)

>>2687688
>>
>>2687689
Water Still
The gang has Renovated an old water still out in the wastes. Worked by the family or friends of one of the gangers, they sell water to nearby settlers.

Once more please
>>
Rolled 6, 1 = 7 (2d6)

>>2687692
>>
>>2687693
Respectable Establishment
Your gang runs one of the underhives popular restaurants. Selling bizarre "delicacies" your gang makes a tidy profit, occasionally paying maintenance.

Again, please
>>
Rolled 2, 2 = 4 (2d6)

>>2687702
>>
>>2687706
Scavvy Contact
Your gang makes a small secretive income supplying goods to those beneath decent scum society. Unfortunately this is frowned upon by guilders.

4th time
>>
Rolled 2, 2 = 4 (2d6)

>>2687711
>>
>>2687714
Re roll pham
>>
Rolled 4, 1 = 5 (2d6)

>>2687740
rerollan
>>
Rolled 4, 3 = 7 (2d6)

>>2687711
>>
>>2687743
Legitimate Work
One of your gangers actually does some meaningful work for the administratum that aids the Segmentum Solar.

And the last roll
>>
Rolled 1, 6 = 7 (2d6)

>>2687748
>>
>>2687752
Hunter Trading Post
Your gang runs an outpost dealing in pelts, claws, poison sacks, jewel eyes, etc of strange local beasts

Looks like we trade with nomads a lot.

Well that's the gang.
>>
>>2687756
We seem like standup dudes.
>>
>>2687756
So, unions, community work. We've got tats for a special right? Maybe some bizarre hybrid of yakuza/russian mafia? With the tats, nothing visible while wearing a suit, but full body tats otherwise?

Spitballing here, anyone else? Can we at least be selling drugs and stuff while being stand up members of the community? Literally providing protection from other gangs? Maybe even working with local government when it suits us.
>>
>>2687767
I want Jap-Russo YakuMafia so bad I can't even lie.

But yeah, there's no reason we can't still deal drugs, sell weapons, and move bodies, especially if that money goes back into the community or works to undermine the community of a rival gang. Chaotic Good doesn't mean Chaotic Nice.
>>
>>2687776
>Chaotic Good doesn't mean Chaotic Nice.

There might could be an argument for lawful evil really
>>
>>2687785
I mean, considering the decentralized and transient nature, but CG and LE might not only be a matter of perspective, but exist in equal measure.
>>
>>2687811
Perhaps a structure where the "core" of the organization is rather firm but exclusive, and allows for a very wide array of associates. I mean it's pretty cliche but say several families syndicated together would make for a strong inner circle, and would be the heads of the organization, but jimmy on the corner and bobby in the union while being associated with the gang aren't actually full on members. But if the big dogs come calling? They answer.

Tats signifying rank and accomplishment, but still allow for a professional appearance I say.
>>
And if we're gonna yakuza/russian mafia, we have to have bath houses I guess
>>
>>2687776
>deal drugs, sell weapons

Matter of fact, so, we're in the water business out in the wastes right? Sounds like something that could easily coincide with moonshining, and we also have that trading post dealing with the nomads right? Well, who better to sell guns to? And so we have this fancy restaurant right? Well, where better to get delicacies from for that restaurant? Sounds like a pretty nice trade loop to me.
>>
>>2688059
>>2687835
Sounds pretty good. But what shall we call them?
>>
>>2688488
To the name generators
>>
Considering that we're communal, and therefore very upfront in most of our dealings, something with the word association, society or club might fit well.
>>
>>2688505
Something Clan?

Since this is a death world and we're only really notable because of our crypt moons, a lot of gangs and planet culture can revolve around death and burial imagery, more so than the rest of the Imperium.

So Cremators, Euthanizers, etc or something like the Ossuary Clan.

Or we could learn hard into the blood feud aspect and simply be in the "mafia" but belong to a particular crime family. Perhaps our bosses used to be city big wigs, locked in combat with another big family, but our enemies sold out to Guilders, moved to the Hive, and used to own our turf. This callous disregard for the place they came from could explain why we are so protective of our people, but their power and status over us would necessitate our flexible structure

That, and owning a restaurant is a classic mob move
>>
I also realize that amounts of Mongol would be a good bridge between Russian and Japanese.

The Atlakhan Crime Family?
>>
>>2688586
I like it! We could have flavors of the Great Khans from New Vegas, too.
>>
>>2688586
Hm, maybe something Chinese sounding? Black Lotus Society/Syndicate something like that? Golden something, Celestial something. I like the idea of using a name that seems like something of a legitimate organization considering how our gang rolled up.

Maybe making drugs/herbal medicines from parts of the deadly fauna/flora and selling it could be a thing? Whether it works or not.
>>
>>2688586
>>2688795

Mongol and Great Khans seems kind of like a theme of what I would expect to see out of the nomads/warboy types. I could certainly see interactions with those types, maybe even some crossover with our associates out manning the water still and trading post. Would seem kind of out of place in a megacity/hive environment I would think. Due to loose association I think it'd be fair to expect a fairly colorful array of associates really.
>>
>>2688795
>>2688799
>>2688820
The crime family could have originated as nomads, coming into Kanus City when ur first started spilling from the hive. So the Mongol-esque elements have mellowed out greatly over the century or so, and are only really relevant in the actual family. The Russo-Japanese stuff has evolved naturally due to cultural drift.

This explains our tight bonds to the nomad psychos and downtrodden, and our rivalry with what is no doubt an old blood Hive house, maybe even nobility.

Our "traditional weapon" can be ritual knives, kukris or Bowie or trench knives, a weapon from guzzoline caravans and the untamed wilderness.
>>
>>2688879
Personally, not a fan mongol/nomad themed stuff. Background sure, but RPing it ain't for me.
>>
>>2688893
Well good. Because its background fluff. This is explicitly a quest about rising up the ranks of a gang, not being witnessed on fury road. The Mongol/Russian/Japanese cultural mishmash is just to make the gang stand out from generic imperial gang, or Necromunda.

And having knives be a gang staple is pretty iconic. Like a Yakuza katana.

>>2688799
Well, Thrull has massive predatory Felines, maybe the Tiger Guild? Or Guild of Knives? Ash Guild, for crematory ash and the ash of manufactorum smoke stacks?
>>
>>2688928

Having come from "nomads" is kinda meh is my point, having actual katanas would be pretty cool really.

The Golden Fang(s)?
>>
>>2688952
What, you can't dig humble raiders settling into a burgeoning mega city and despite all the odds flourishing into a formidable criminal force?
>>
>>2688969
Not really.

Established criminal enterprise with lots of tradition is more to my liking.
>>
>>2688987
That's. That's what this is.

Were talking more than a century of history. The Nomad thing is ancient history, and the history of the crime family itself, not necessarily the hangers on
>>
>>2689006

A century isn't very long, underdogs are lame, and "nomad" style isn't my thing.

Well, I'll see how it pans out I guess but I'll probably be checking out.

Chargen sucks.
>>
>>2689015
Or so. Look at the cultural shifts in the western world in the last 50 years alone. A concerted effort and will to adapt can have savages be business suited gangsters in mere decades. The nomad thing are their roots, but it doesnt define them. And in the Imperium, all gangers are underdogs in the face of the Arbites.

I've pretty much gotten what I need from this thread. I'll let this one die and make the Hive Ganger Quest thread when I'm ready.
