Nothing really wakes you up better than a headache splitting your brain open.

You bolt upright and feel dust and dirt sink into your armor plates and your fatigues. With a quick assessment of the situation, you find yourself in a little ditch in a small gully. The first thing you do though is scratch at yourself. Then you get up and dust yourself off. What in the blue blazes happened last night? You take a whiff with your nose, then immediately recoil and sneeze. More dirt and dust. Did someone bury you? You lightly touch your helmet, then feel something on your forehead. You take a look at it. Blood, looks nearly dry too.

You must have taken a serious blow to the head. You look around again. The walls of this gully are only about a few inches higher than you are.

Your memory’s fuzzy. Just take a minute to think.

You’re a soldier.

And things went really bad last night. You definitely remember that. Damn lizards put up more of a fight than everyone realized. Turns out they weren’t as stone age as the Government thought they were.

Alright, just stay focused. What else do you remember? You bang on your helmet. Oh! You pull your helmet off then take a look at it. Immediately you feel your stomach turn at the sight of it. You didn’t just take a blow to the head. It looks someone actually –shot- you in the head and the helmet just barely managed to deflect it. Another inch deeper and this helmet would be the only thing keeping your brains, skull, and eyeballs together in one piece. You feel the gash where the round hit you—jagged, rough yet incredibly straight.

Right. You turn the helmet to its back, then pull out the chip. Your combat helmets are designed for a few things information-wise. Objective feeds, squad member locations, and personal IDs in case your dogtags go missing.

Right. First things first, let’s see what type of soldier you are.

> Rifleman: Regular. The Dominion conscripts riflemen by the hundreds of thousands to keep up the defense. You’re no different from any of them, so you don’t have any real talent. Around here though, you’re going to need to learn quick.
> Heavy Weapons Specialist: Your personal weapon was the Type 66 Phased Plasma Pulse Cannon, something akin to a heavy machine gun that you could lug around like any other rifle. Great at zapping lizards though, even the big Rexes. Not great though is that it’s not here, you must have lost it somewhere.
> Combat Engineer: Explosives, barricades, defensives, all that stuff. None of your tools are here but nothing a little elbow grease and opposable thumbs can’t fix. After all, you’re a lot smarter than those damn lizards.
> Medic: What’s a medic without any medical equipment? Everyone carries a basic IFAK at least but that’s definitely not going to be enough if you find more wounded out there. Not to mention you still have a serious case of “being shot in the head and somehow surviving” syndrome.
> Scout: Your DMR is missing. So are your tactical binoculars. So are your marking flares and grenades. So is your pistol. So is… basically everything you actually need for scouting aside from your own personal initiative is missing. Wonderful.

As a Scout, your primary job is to range ahead of the squad and skirmish with the DMR. You also serve as a guide in harsher conditions and as a carrier for items that can mark locations. Technically speaking, you’re also supposed to carry your own portable Ground-to-Orbit Radio but considering the expense and the weight, most Team Leads just designate a Rifleman to carry it and buddy with you. You’re a crack shot though and you know how to survive, that’s for sure.

But this morning or rather… You look around at the sky. You can’t tell from inside this gully the time and the actual clock inside the helmet is busted. Damn it. You’ll assume it’s somewhere around morning since the attack was made at night.

You check your equipment. Armor is good. You got your chestplate, your shoulder guards, your shin guards and knee pads, your greaves, and your helmet. Helmet though is busted. No readouts, no clock, no compass, nothing. It’s basically just a helmet and nothing else. Well, you take another look at the scar on it. It’s a helmet with history.

First chance you get, you should probably loot one that’s intact though.

You also have an IFAK too. Two syringe shots of InstAid, a gauze wrap, a jar of medigel, and a tourniquet. Not the most robust or complete IFAK but it’s an IFAK. InstAid will assist with internal injuries while medigel will help with external ones.

Right, you know you’re a Scout. Last night was a madhouse.

Wait. There’s one thing you’re missing. Is it? You check your pockets frantically. Please don’t be missing, please don’t be missing…

You feel around in your left front pant pockets. Oh… thank God. You pull it out.

> A watch, given to you by your father. Also military but retired. He was quite proud to see you wearing your fatigues before you shipped out. The watch though hasn’t worked for years and is stopped on the 12 hour arm and 8 minute arm mark.

You gently caress the watch’s glass face. This watch has been passed on from father to son in your family for quite some time. You don’t know how long for sure, but you remember your father saying that it was older than he was. That doesn’t really tell you how old it is aside from it being older than he was but you suppose he was just trying to put it into scale. Regardless, he was pretty excited to hand it off to you when you shipped out, as a sort of parting gift.

Funny really. Only real positive interaction you’ve had with him.

Regardless, it’s yours to keep. And you’re going to do a damn better job at raising your own son than he did that’s for sure. Shame it doesn’t work though, it’d be good to use to tell the time out here. You hear this lizard planet had a similar timescale to the standard 24 hour clock, and even the eggheads can’t agree how much exactly. Probably at most an hour. You look up at the sky. Definitely clear, definitely some clouds. And at the edges of this gully there were grass. Weird, Intel told you this planet was supposed to be hostile to life. But so far, you haven’t been attacked by anything except the natives.

When you think hostile to life, you think giant plants, hostile atmosphere, sinkholes, all that stuff you read in the holos. You’ve been sitting here for about three minutes getting your bearings and nothing has tried to eat you yet.

You decide to shove the watch into one of your pouches. You dare not wear it, lest you die and someone just loot it off you. Or worse, one of the lizards eats it. Right now you had to think. You’re unarmed, save for a knife. Not even any grenades or anything. You’re practically naked at this point. And in this gully, something may be fixing to ambush you at any point.

Right now you had to secure yourself some high ground. What’s the first thing on the list?

Hundred meters is not that far and we should be able to get a weapon from him. Or grab one from a corpse we see. Not quite sure if we are in or near a battle field
>>
> You need a weapon.
> Rally on the Team Lead’s locator beacon. The helmet can still guide you, and according to it he’s only a hundred meters out.

Right, first thing’s first. You need a weapon.

You look around the gully. Well. There’s lots of rocks you suppose. You pick up a heavy looking stone around the size of a grapefruit in your hand. Maybe if you throw this hard enough it’ll be useful. You threw rocks like these at froggies when you were a kid, always did some damage. Still, you rub your nose a little. How did you get out here this far without a weapon? Did you just drop your rifle or something? Well, then again, gash to the head, you probably did just drop your rifle. But there’s no way you ended up in this gully with all that dirt piled on top of you. It’s like someone tried to bury you or something. You almost get walking but you trip on something also buried next to you.

You kneel down and wipe away the dust. Oh! A pistol! You pick it up.

> TYPE 02 PERSONAL PLASMA PISTOL – 30 WATT
> A 30 watt Plasma Pistol. Fires a short ranged but fairly reliable beam of condensed plasma at a target and is good for engagements at near about 200 meters or so. 300 or 400 if an extended powerpack is attached, unfortunately those are never available when needed. Standard power packs have enough charge for twenty shots.

You check the power pack in this plasma pistol.

> POWER LEVEL: 5 SHOTS REMAINING

This’ll have to do for now. You’ll have to scavenge power packs as you go along because you can’t just toss these in the sun and wait for them to cook. You need a dedicated recharging unit. You attach it to your belt, then grab the edge of the gully wall and pull yourself up.

Your head aches severely. Probably need to take a look at that once you get somewhere secure. Now’s not safe. You start marching towards your Team Lead’s locator beacon. With any luck, Staff Sergeant Rake is probably looking for you with the rest of the squad. You decide to activate the readout on your team status to see what’s what.

> TEAM LEAD: S-SGT E. RAKE - *ERROR*
> FIRETEAM 1 LEAD: SGT Y. EVEREST - *ERROR*
> FIRETEAM 1 ASSISTANT LEAD: CPL. G. HARDING - *ERROR*
> FT 1 SCOUT: PFC *ERROR* - ACTIVE
> FT 1 RIFLEMAN: PFC M. WILPONS - *ERROR*
> FT 1 RIFLEMAN: PFC S. SHAMES - *ERROR*

Well. Typical. You need to get a new helmet. This one’s busted. You at least get a fix on where your Team Lead is. Goodness gracious, Sergeant Rake is going to be pissed to see you in this condition, especially without a weapon. He’s lit your butt up before when you lost your DMR that one time. Was not fun having to carry a copy that was twice as large and made of wood around the base all day. But at least you never lost it after that day until now.

The environment around you is incredibly rocky, dotted with sudden rises, hills, drops, and unstable terrain everywhere. The rocks themselves were high enough to almost be like trees, definitely thick as starship hulls too. The odd tree or so grew around these rocks. You were probably on the edge of a forest somewhere. The RV was actually meant to be in a clearing in the woods somewhere to the west of where you are now. But first you want to hook up with your Team Lead. A short walk one hundred meters isn’t going to hamper you or anything.

No, what will hamper you is the sound of clicking and croaking. Lizards. You move down to a crouch as you ascend up a small rise then stop at the crest. You look down.

And nearly choke. You see them ripping and tearing at what used to be your Team Lead. His armor has been beaten up and discarded in favor of the rich meat inside. His head has been picked completely clean, with his skull smashed under their feet into pieces. His blood is spilled over the green grass and on some of the rocks too around them.

These little bastards. Barely bigger than a large dog. Their tails whip around happily as they eat and tear apart the corpse.

Lizards. Specifically, Troodon. Their grey scales beneath their light harnesses were very recognizable.

> TROODON
> The basic worker caste of the Lizards. Troodon are so-named for their resemblance to the ancient Earth dinosaur. They possess hands with six fingers that can articulate much like a humans, but feature no opposable digits. These fingers end in durable serrated claws which Troodon appear to use to inflict severe bleeding and to tear apart prey for easier feeding. They are also occasionally used as frontline cannon fodder by the Lizards, as they appear to breed rapidly.

Good news. Troodon are very easy to kill. One shot from even your 30 watt will at the very least knock them to the ground.

Bad news, there were ten of them feasting on Sergeant Rake. None of them however seemed concerned with standing watch or guard. For them, that’s probably the best meal they’ve had today. And it made you sick to the gut.

> Fire on them. Putting down a few of them might get the others to scatter. You hope.

There's 10 of them an we've only got 5 shots.
>>
> Leave. There’s no purpose to getting into a fight with these guys with only a pistol.

You push yourself back from the crest and press your head against the ground. No. Don’t fall for it. If you shoot, you only have five shots. And this little pistol doesn’t overpenetrate. Either. If the other five close in, you’ll be torn to shreds like Sergeant Rake was. The only thing right now you can hope for is that Sergeant Rake was dead before they started eating him. Those alien fiends, there’s no civilization to them. They’re barely better than some savage tribals. You clip the pistol back onto your belt and sigh quietly. Don’t risk it for now.

You can still hear them tearing apart Rake’s flesh. It’ll be some time before they finish. The helmet will still have Rake’s location marked so you can always come back.

You hear some rustling of grass and leaves. Hide, now! You push yourself up against the dark side of a rock in the shadows then pull some leaves and grass over yourself. Hold your breath, keep still.

You watch as a pair of Troodon rush in at the bottom of the rise you were just at a moment ago. They cock their heads, croaking raspily to each other as they sniff at the ground. Frak, they’re looking for another meal. They press their snouts right to the ground, sniffing loudly. You keep as still as possible. The dark colors of your armor and the darkness of the shadow will at least break your silhouette. Just stay still.

One of the Troodon lifts his head up, sniffing the air. The other brings his head up too, licking at his serrated teeth as he watches the first one.

Then they run off easterly, towards where you first started.

Damn it. This place crawls. There must be Troodon patrols all over the area. Just leaving would be dangerous. But staying means they’ll eventually catch your scent and find you.

> Keep low to the ground and crawl to the RV point.

You roll over quietly onto your stomach, then start crawling. The RV point isn’t… that far honestly. And crawling you guess is better than running.

Have to find some good points to this, you’re going to go insane. You just hope the boats are still here. But considering there’s Troodon just randomly running around, your hopes are dwindling. You push past grass, leaves, and rocks. You have to be slow. Too fast, and the rocks banging against your chestplate are going to make a heck of a lot of noise. Too slow, and well, you’re not going to get very far. At the very least, you’re glad those Troodon left to find you in the wrong direction. You don’t assume those lizards to be incredibly smart. They’re more like dogs than actual people honestly. But at least dogs have charm to them.

You stop up, then rest your head on the ground again. You’ve only crawled maybe thirty meters and you’re already tired. You bang your fist against the ground. Come on, RV isn’t that far.

> APPROACHING SITE: EVACUATION RENDEZVOUS POINT CHARLIE

You lost track of time with how long you’ve been crawling. You didn’t run into any more Troodon thankfully. But you are severely out of breath and are in desperate need of some water. Your canteen must have gone missing in the clash last night. You crawl up a little rise then move over the crest.

Only to find no ground beneath you. It’s a sharp drop down that you didn’t anticipate.

You fall onto your side and roll onto your stomach. Dust sprinkles onto you as if to rub it in. Thankfully that drop wasn’t too bad. You look up.

Oh.

No. That drop was not bad compared to what you see now.

The RV Point was set in a clearing, meant to evacuate the entire battalion out of the area, enough for several hundred soldiers. That’s a couple of dozen Retrieval Boats, maybe a few heavy ships for the Suits. But here, your heart absolutely sank to your feet.

The RV Point was completely ransacked. Skeletons and bones of long-eaten soldiers were strewn about the site. Burn marks from plasma scoring were sprayed around the trees and the rocks. A massive crater from what you assume to have been a Suit self-destruct sat in the center of the site. And most damningly of all, a crashed Retrieval Boat was lying in a pile of rocks, burnt out but thankfully not on fire. You look around. No Troodon. No other lizards. No… other humans.

Just you. The lizards must have pillaged this place in the middle of the night.

Retrieval Boats aren’t particularly big. They’re more or less just a metal box with a cockpit, some wings, and some space-capable engines attached to it. Still, the fact that these lizards managed to actually take one down? Bit of a mystery to you. The rear ramp was opened up, probably to evacuate whoever was left after it crashed and burned. You take a look inside. Now you can see that was incredibly optimistic. All the seats were occupied, and all of them smell of a vicious burning flesh. It was enough to make your ears water and your gut to heave up.

You calm yourself, then pinch your nose and climb inside. You slip on some ashes and crash against one of the seats. The head of the poor fellow you land on snaps off like a twig and rolls down. Augh, that is disgusting! You look around. Any usable equipment in this hold is probably burnt to cinders. But maybe the Orbital Transmitter these things are built with can still work.

Climbing up to the cockpit requires using the ladder at the front of the bay, thankfully intact. You climb up, then shove the hatch open. You climb in and there you see both pilots slump in their seats. Seems the fire didn’t reach them. They must have been killed by the crash instead. You lean over in the cramped cockpit, then look around. If you’re correct, these pilots must have a survival kit in here or something.

You look below the seats, then press what appears to be some kind of button. A flat box pops out, making you flinch. Aha! You pull the box out and tear it open. A Pulse Carbine! Yes!

> TYPE 40c PLASMA PULSE CARBINE – 40 WATT
> Designed as a defensive weapon for support crews and pilots, the Type 40c is a short-barreled variant of the standard Type 40 Plasma Pulse Rifle. The barrel is shorter and is only good for engagements at close range. But it fires at a rate of 1700 RPM (though for logistical reasons is capped to 10 round bursts, though it’s not hard to mod it to full auto with the right tools) and it’s 40 watt charge means it can kill most anything that’s not armored.

> POWER LEVEL: 50 SHOTS REMAINING

You check the other seat. Another Pulse Carbine. For now, you decide to simply loot the spare power pack. No point in carrying a second Carbine, just added weight.

Right, you look around for some kind of communications console… there! Right between the two pilots. You press the big green button.

Nothing.

You press another button. Nothing at all.

[1/2]
>>
>>2855404
[2/2]

It occurs to you that even if this thing was working, you wouldn’t know how to use it because you never trained to pilot these things.

Still, what was eating at you more was the fact that nothing was working at all. You bang against the console. No response. Not even the Dumb AI these things come with is responding. This thing is a total loss.

You sit down and sigh deeply.

The RV is frakked. Everyone around you is dead. And the only way to call for help is not functioning.

You smack the communications console again.

Right. Can’t give up. Just think of what else you can do. Don’t sit and think. What else is there to do?

> Find a map and take a look at potential locations in the Mission Sector. There’s got to be places more defensible than this. And with any luck, maybe you’ll run into other people.

You start searching for a map. Usually officers carry physical maps of the Mission Sector on the off-chance that guidance computers go haywire or for situations where GPS simply isn’t available. There’s a good chance the pilots have one too just for clarity’s sake as well. You search their bodies and find nothing (except for a few tabs of water purifier and an actual canteen which was unfortunately empty).

But you do search around underneath their dashboards and lo and behold, papers. Mostly manuals on operating the boat that you can’t discern due to your lack of training. But you do find something tucked in between all the heavy books. A map of the Mission Sector. You sit down on the floor of the cockpit then get to reading out the map.

You are at RV Charlie. Now, there are three RV Points, Charlie, Bravo, and Alpha. Bravo is five hundred meters straight north of this position, with Alpha northwest-west another five hundred meters from Bravo. But what was most important was Strike Base One, “Devil’s Den”.

Strike Base One was intended to be the Firebase for the overall attack in this sector, at least for the first wave. It was intended to be an FOB that could effectively coordinate the Regiment sent in to clear a zone for the much larger second wave. Seeing as how everyone is dead though, the second wave must have never landed. Whatever happened to Strike Base One, you don’t know. What you do know is that Strike Base One has everything you will likely need. Weapons, ammo, supplies, possible other humans, maybe even a working communications relay that can contact the Navy upstairs.

Devil’s Den is west of Bravo, two hundred meters thereabouts. It’s nestled on a hilltop covered by boulders and rocky outcroppings. The combat engineers got to calling it “Devil’s Den.” Between you and all these points were random hills, rocky outcroppings, and scattered trees. A thick forest laid far to the east. And a central stone paved road split the Mission sector in half, routing through RV Point Bravo going east to west. That road was supposed to lead to a Lizard city, which is about two hundred kilometers to the east buried within the mountains. Along the road ran a large deep river about fourty meters wide with only two bridges across. One directly at RV Bravo, and another to the west going towards Devil’s Den.

You take a moment to think on this.

> Heading to Devil’s Den is your best bet. Supplies, weapons, ammo, everything will be available there.
> Best to go to RV Point Bravo first. See what you can see.
> You’ve already used up a few hours. And walking the distance will take some time. Stay here, because you definitely don’t want to get caught out at night.

> Heading to Devil’s Den is your best bet. Supplies, weapons, ammo, everything will be available there.

You circle Devil’s Den on the map with a marker then take a breath. Devil’s Den will likely have everything you need, food, water, ammo, weapons, maybe even a comms beacon. Not to mention that if there are any other people like you, they’ll be converging on Devil’s Den. If you’re even luckier, you’ll run into other members of your fireteam there too. They’ll know to rally to Devil’s Den if no other place works. You rub at your head, then you remember the head wound you’ve got. Considering you’re not stumbling around or having random blackouts or feeling… well any of the usual symptoms of a concussion, all it needs is a wrap around the wound.

You take your helmet off and wrap the gauze around your head to stop up the bleeding. The blood’s probably already clotted over by now but it’s best to be safe than sorry. Once that’s done, you pull your helmet on again, then stand up. It’s a shame these pilots don’t have a survival kit but you suppose that’s how Navy rolls. Guess they’re too uppity to believe their pilots might in fact one day get shot down. God forbid they need to survive more than a day before pick up.

You climb back down into the cargo bay, then freeze. You hear faint croaking and hissing. You crouch down and move to the edge of the bay towards the ramp. Slowly you poke your head up.

Rushing into the RV site are a pair of Troodon, croaking loudly as the sniffed at the ground. They’re hot on your track. Damn. They scratch and claw at the ground, sniffing and panting. They’re more concerned about tracking your scent rather than trying to search the area it seems. But they’re keeping close together which prohibits sniping one then taking out the other quickly. At least, that’s if you’re too slow.

> Single shots with your Carbine. Quietly.

You switch to single shots, then take account of your breath and your heart rate. You aim for the rightmost one as it claws at the ground. The other one raises its head up, idly looking away. There’s your chance. Fire.

One thing most people think of when it comes to energy weapons is that energy weapons are whisper quiet. They’re actually just as loud as old slugthrowers. They travel fast though. The second you burn a hole straight through that Troodon’s head, it turns around and receives a shot to the eye. They both drop quickly.

You inhale deeply, then gently pat the floor of the cargo bay. Thank God. They didn’t get a single cry for help out. And with any luck, they’ll think those electrical cracks were just some rocks resettling or something. You quickly hurry up to the Troodon and poke them with your foot. Dead as doornails. That’s 48 shots left for the Carbine. You look at the Troodon themselves. Aside from their hide, which you have no real use for, or their meat which you hear isn’t really good eating… there’s not much to them. The harness they wear around their bodies is more so they can be grabbed more easily by larger dinos and be redirected, or so they can carry things. Which none of them have.

Damn. For a minute there you were actually willing to drink the same water those lizards drink.

Oh well. You look up. The star is high in the sky. Close to midday. If you want to make it to Devil’s Den, you have to get moving and quickly.

You’ll have to select a route though before you go.

> Take the bridge route. It’s the safest way across the river relatively speaking.
> Find a way to ford the river further west. It’s likely there are more Troodon running around the bridge, as it’s a really obvious way to move across that river.
> Move up to the river itself then get your bearings. You’ll decide what to do when you get there.

Back on Hopewell, you always enjoyed backpacking through the forests there. It was a good way to get away from your mother drinking her worries away and the other kids picking on you just for the sake of having someone to pick on. It wasn’t too different here. And in fact, this planet actually kind of reminded you in some ways of Hopewell. Lush grass, nice breathable air (unlike places like say New Madrigal or Earth), and some history to it. Once the Dominion puts the boots to the Lizards, you’d probably retire here or something.

It’s good to get your mind off the fact that you’re all alone now. Rake’s dead. Everest and Harding are probably dead. Wilpons and Shames, also probably dead. You don’t remember much about them managing to get off aside from you getting shot in the head. How did you even end up in that gully anyway? You were fighting in that forest with the rest of the team. That gully was a hell of a way away from where you definitely got shot.

Maybe they were trying to drag you away back to the RV. But you being unconscious, you slowed them down too much and they were wiped out trying to save you.

No, no. Push that thought out. You can’t think like that. For all you know, they just left your sorry ass there to die. For all you know, they’re yucking it up back on the ship drinking to your memory while ballsdeep in some blue Alpherian poontang or something. You shudder thinking about. Wilpons always was a freak for preferring Alpherians over actual humans. You shudder again thinking about it harder. Wilpons also had a thing for those sapient fungus creatures too.

Wilpons was weird.

You keep alert as you march though. The river shouldn’t be too far ahead. You can already hear the sound of babbling brooks. Then you hear croaking calls in the distance, like the howls of wolves. You freeze, looking around.

Nothing. Alright, better get moving. Double time. You start rushing for the river. Come on, come on.

You burst out of the rocks and boulders and find yourself at the bank of a very large river. On the other side was indeed that stone road. The river was wide. And judging by how you can’t even see the bottom despite how crystal clear it is, it’s definitely deep. You take a glance around. No Troodon at first glance. Nothing.

Then you hear some cracks to the west. You look over. More crackling noises like…

Plasma rifle.

You start sprinting over to where you heard the shots. No lizard has a plasma rifle. That’s a human being! You rush through the shallow water banks and get moving. You hear the loud sharp cries of Troodon too. Oh, no no no. Faster, faster!

“Help!” Come on! You grab your Carbine by the carry handle get running as fast as you can. “N- Nooo!” Your lungs burn as you push yourself to the limit. You start running up a small hill then once you get to the crest, you slide down to your knees and take cover behind a tree.

Running into the clearing was another soldier just like you. His visor was broken to pieces and his mask was cracked. He held onto his arm, which was torn open and bleeding badly. He pants heavily, trying to sprint towards the river. You aim to call out to him, but the Troodon get to him first. A pack of three Troodon burst out of the rock outcroppings behind him. One of them pounces clear across the clearing and nails the poor man in the back. He gets knocked to the ground. “No! No! I don’t want to die! Aaah!” The other Troodon howl and cry as they start mobbing the man. They start biting and pulling at him. One at his wounded arm, another to his neck, and the third at his leg. “Aah! Ah! No! No!”

Your heart races. Save him. Save him.

You stand up and blast the Troodon rending the man’s neck. The other two Troodon shriek, looking at you. You blast the one holding his arm. The last one croaks, leaping off the man and moving to rush at you. Oh frak, frak, frak… Aim small, miss small! You fire.

The plasma shot blasts straight through its head. It tumbles straight past you and lands like a sack of dead chickens.

> POWER LEVEL: 45 SHOTS LEFT

You hurry on over to the man and check on him. It’s not good at all. His arm is almost severed completely. There are horrific gaping cuts and gashes all across his arms and legs. His neck is bleeding severely as well too. The man looks at you. “Wh-… thank you.” His skin is pale, and he blinks rapidly as if he were trying to keep himself awake. You nod, comfortingly placing your hand on his chest. No way you can stop all this blood, he’s going to bleed out before you can get him any help. And nothing in your IFAK can help him, it’d be a waste of time. “P- Please.” He tries to reach out to you with his good arm. “Help me, please. I can’t feel my legs.”

He’s not going to make it.

You start searching around his IFAK. Some gauze wrapping and a jar of medigel. Alright. You start spreading the medigel on the wounds as best as you can. It’ll seal up the cuts and gashes and hopefully stop the bleeding, but you don’t know how much time you’re giving him here. Minutes, hours? You shake your head. You’re just going to leave this guy out here. “Thank you,” he mutters. You wrap the gauze around his wounds once the medigel is applied. He cringes as the medigel starts sealing his wounds up slowly. You’ve had to apply it to yourself once, it’s like having fire ants drag your skin around. Unfortunately, you had to exhaust his entire jar, but at least you got good coverage of his wounds. “Thank you so much,” he says. You look at him, a very weak smile on his face. He’s a young guy just like you. Probably conscripted too.

You grab his arm and hip then throw him onto your back to carry. Not the most comfortable or safest way to carry a casualty but it’ll have to do. He groans in agony as you heft him around. Alright. You start fast walking towards the river. “Wh… what’s your name?” he asks.

You don’t answer. Can’t really afford to right now, you need every breath you can get carrying a fully loaded man on your back.

“My… name is Nielson,” he mutters quietly. “Nielson,” he repeats. You snap your fingers by his eyes, making him flinch. Come on, Nielson, stay awake. That’s important.

You make it to the riverbank, then look to your left. There is the bridge. It’s a stone bridge, looks wide enough for fifteen men across. But here’s the problem. That bridge and the other bridge further upstream is the only crossing point. Troodon may be dumb, but they’re not so dumb that they can’t recognize a strategic location like a bridge. Especially on a river as big as this one. If you want to ford this river, you’d have to head further west, which means way more walking and more delaying your arrival to Devil’s Den. And it’s not even guaranteed you’ll find a fording point. If you don’t, you’re stranded.

You sigh. Think. What now?

You leave Nielson down in the shadow of some rocks nearby, then pick out your canteen. After you fill up on some water in the river then shove in a purification tablet, you make a decision. Scout the bridge. Then see what you’re up against. You unsling the carbine, then sneak up the side of the bridge and look over.

On the bridge itself is a pack of ferocious Troodon. Damn it. There must have been at least ten of them. Two of them were snapping and biting at each other. Probably some kind of primal predatory show of dominance. One of the Troodon slashes the other, hissing loudly in defiance. The loser gets a face full of claws, bleeding severely. Then comes the jaw. You admit, it’s a little entertaining watching this.

Then suddenly the winning Troodon is snatched up in the jaws of a much larger beast. Its thrashed and thrown around in the maw before being thrown into the riverside, howling in pain before splashing in the water to drown.

Drowning though would be preferable. The Troodon on the bridge watch as their friend gets shredded alive by large toothy fish. They turn to the party killer. The big Raptor clicks its killing claw against the stone, shrieking and cawing at the smaller Troodon. It wears a much heavier metallic harness, not just on its back carrying equipment and its rifle, but also on its legs. You recognize this lunk, or rather the species. Intel talked them up during the briefing before the drop.

> ATROCIRAPTOR MINOR
> More commonly referred to as “Raptors”, Atrociraptor form the lower class caste of the Lizards. They serve as career military troops, skilled laborers, and city guards. Notably, like the Troodon, their hands articulate with a motion much like a humans, but they feature three fingers with an additional opposable thumb allowing them a wide range of motion. They also feature a distinct “killing claw” on their feet.

> Raptor Minors tend to serve as pack leaders of Troodon groups, often ruling through fear and intimidation. Killing them tends to cause the Troodon under its command to scatter in fear. Their combat equipment includes what appears to be a semi-automatic rifle chambered to fire scattershot rounds, along with a skeletal exo-suit harness that enhances their already capable speed, leaping, and climbing abilities.

The Raptor Minor screams at its Troodon pack. One of the Troodon whimpers fearfully in its presence. And to that, the Raptor simply bites down on its neck and sends it running across to the other end of the bridge. The other Troodon stay in its presence, bowing their heads low to keep from being harmed.

> Take out the Raptor and the Troodon will scatter.
> Best not to risk it. Stay back and consider another course of action.

Maybe the guy we saved has some sort of explosive, flare or smoke? Also we should probably position him correctly so we can get past the bridge as fast as we can and away from the distraction.
Worst comes to worst we can still shoot the raptor.
>>
>>2858389
You were conked on the head by a very close hitting bullet. Had enough strength to tear a gash straight across the helmet but not penetrate, but it did knock you unconscious for the night.

Other than that, you're more or less fine save for being hungry and dehydrated.
>>
> Maybe a distraction out here will cause them to investigate and open a gap for you.

Alright. A distraction would be best here. But what kind of distraction? That Raptor is smart, it probably won’t chase after random plasmafire or smoke in the distance. You head back on over to Nielson. You slap him awake, and he groggily groans as you start searching him. Anything useful?

You sigh. No. He’s just as devoid of equipment as you are. You suppose he had the sense of mind to drop unnecessary gear when he was running from those Troodon, along with his rifle. You stand up, thinking on it for a second. What do Troodon want more than anything else? Wait. You think you know.

You reposition Nielson again under the shade of a very distinct looking rock by the river. Then you quickly shovel some leaves over him to cover him up. You’ll be back for him later. You draw your knife and hurry back to where you first found him. Good, the Troodon corpses. You gather some rocks together and some dry leaves first for a makeshift little campfire. Then it’s time to skin. You’ve done some skinning yourself back on Hopewell. These Troodon should be no different.

By the time you got back to the river, hiding behind a rock with Nielson again, the smell of cooking meat was drifting outwards. The smoke coming from the campfire was obvious sure. What was less obvious was the smell of meat. You see a single Troodon come to the end of the bridge first, sniffing the air. Then a pair more. Then three more, then all the rest. They sniff at the air, chirping and cawing. The Raptor screeches at them, stomping behind them.

One of the Troodon breaks rank and goes for it, sprinting towards the meal. That’s enough to get them all cascading out into the wilderness for a hot meal. The Raptor screeches loudly, running after them.

Now’s your chance!

You pick up Nielson again then go as fast as you can towards the bridge. You strongarm the Carbine in one hand just in case they get back faster than you hope. You can’t go any faster than a fast walk with him on your back, so you hope they’re gone long. Nielson groans again. “Where are we?” he moans. Probably delirious. Come on, Nielson, keep it together. You’re almost halfway across the bridge now.

You hear a shrill caw behind you. You look behind you. The Raptor is back! It’s sprinting at you fast, baring its teeth.

Sorry about this, Nielson.

You drop him. “Ah!” he cries out in pain, cringing at the rough landing while you turn around. You fire a shot wildly at the Raptor. The plasma shot brazes its skin. Not enough. Its jaws snap around your upper arm. You hear the armor plate crunch as it starts crushing your arm. You scream out then whack him in the head with the butt of your rifle. It lets go, stumbling to the side. It screeches again, advancing on you with outstretched claws and razor sharp teeth.

You aim your rifle. Gotta get a good shot in. Get a good shot in. Or you’re in a world of shit.

> The head. Drop it.

You fire. The shot zaps straight through the Raptor’s skull. A faint flash of blue light explodes out of its eyes as it dies. It goes tumbling face first into the stone before tipping forwards onto its back. Then it finally goes limp, letting off a quiet yet shrill death rattle. You inhale again, thumping your chest. There you go! You actually killed a Raptor! You start laughing a little. Oh sweet merciful God! Ha! You actually killed it! And at this range too! Wow, your arm hurts but you killed it! Yeah!

Oh. Nielson! You look over. He’s still writhing on the ground in pain. You look over to his arm. Shit, it’s bleeding at the point where it was nearly severed again. Damn it! Dropping him must’ve reopened the wound!

Right, before you tend to him, you quickly run over to the Raptor’s corpse. You pick up its rifle. Why it didn’t just shoot you is beyond you. Maybe these Lizards are big into honor duels or something. Still, looking at it, there’s a bit of familiarity to it. It resembles…

Actually, it really resembles a shotgun. You grab the bottom of the front end then pump it. Out of the bottom a clear tube of what look to be metal pellets inside of it falls out. It is a shotgun! You didn’t think the lizards were so nostalgic.

> RAPTOR SHOTGUN
> It’s a shotgun. Of some kind.

> AMMO COUNT: ??

You pick the shell back up then load it back in. Easy to use it seems and no ID or DNA Lock. Wow, for having exo-suits, this type of weapon is primitive. Even your basic military Plasma pistols are coded only to fire when held by someone with human DNA. You keep on searching the Raptor for anything useful too. You find a map of the area too, which they have marked as well in their own language. Three extra shells, and a pair of cans marked with teeth. Food rations? You hope so. You pull all these into the Raptor’s knapsack then strap it to your back. Alright, time to get moving.

“Ah!” Nielson cries out as you heft him up. You carry him up again then start moving across the rest of the way. If you’re lucky, those Troodon are more concerned about their meals and they’ll just eat the Raptor’s corpse rather than follow your scent. “Ah! God! Why!?” You pant heavily. “It hurts!” You can’t stop to tend that wound just yet, you need to wait until you’re somewhere safe. “Ah!”

Once you’re clear of the bridge, you run straight into the rocks and the trees. The random elevation changes were playing havoc on your knees here. Nielson quietly mumbles to himself incoherently as you carry him along. You snap your fingers again to try and wake him up. Don’t fall asleep just yet. You’re only a couple of hundred meters from Devil’s Den.

“Augh… I-… I just want to go home,” he whimpers quietly. “I wanna go home. I wanna see my Mom, I wanna go home...” He starts sobbing as you jog through the wilderness. “I wanna go home, man. I don’t wanna be here. I don’t wanna hurt anymore.”

“Stay awake,” you say. “Talk about home, Nielson. Give me details. Where are you from?”

“Hopewell,” he says quietly. Really? You’re from Hopewell too! Damn! “I got a Mom and Dad, I got a sister. I used to help fix tractors for my Dad too. I got conscripted a few months ago.” He says without any care of whether or not you’re listening. What matters is that he’s distracted from the pain and that he’s awake. You take a swig of water from the canteen, then hiss at the delight of having pure water to drink. “I had my own horse back there too. Her name was Jelly.”

Wait. What? “You named your horse Jelly?”

“I was eight,” he grunts. Okay, fair enough.

“Used to ride down the roads, catch the breeze,” he mutters. You snort a bit. It’s reminding you a little of home actually too. His breathing gets a bit more ragged as he continues speaking. “Jelly always hated going through water though. Whiney-ass horse…” You never owned a horse like he did. But you certainly can see the image clear as day. Riding through lush trees, the scent of leaves and flowers, then the smell of freshly cooked soup in the windowsill as you approach. “What about you?” he asks.

“Eh?” You blink.

“You conscripted too?”

> You enlisted to get off Hopewell honestly, see the galaxy. Probably not the best timing seeing as how things ended up now.
> You enlisted to impress some girl back at school. She was impressed but she didn’t send any letters after you left.

“Uh, I enlisted actually. See when the Dominion won out against the Frogs, enlisting was a no brainer. Wasn’t just patriotic you know. It was cool.” Nielson is silent, apparently he’s listening attentively. “There was this girl. Her name was Francine Blake. Cheerleader. Rumor was she had to get her uniform custom-made because uh…” You make grabbing motions with your hands briefly in front of him. He nods. He gets the idea. “She was swim team too so occasionally you ran into her in the hallway when she was just in her swimsuit.” He nods again, slight weak smile on his face. “She was gorgeous.”

“I bet,” says Nielson. “Never… got me a girl like that.”

“Yeah, she was impressed when I mentioned I was enlisting,” you say. “Deferred my trade education just to see the look on her face. She said she’d send letters too.”

“Did she though?”

“No.”

Nielson is quiet for a few seconds. “Did you at least get some?” You look back at him. “You know.” He makes a squeezing motion with his hand, weakly.

You point ahead. “Uh, look at that. I think I can see Devil’s Den up ahead.” Some rocks were before you, not to mention the rolling hills and trees.

Nielson grunts. “You didn’t answer my question.”

“Yes I did,” you say. “Come on. We’re close. Focus up. I don’t wanna hear anymore whining until we’re secure.” Nielson relaxes a little. Truth be told, you’re going to be glad you’re getting a break from carrying him. You look up at the sky again. It’s already past mid-day. It’s going to be dark soon. And you are looking forward to sleeping in a place that has four walls and a ceiling on it.

> APPROACHING SITE: STRIKE BASE ONE “Devil’s Den”

You didn’t run into anymore lizards on this side of the bridge thankfully. What was more pressing and concerning was the intense workout you were giving your legs. Climbing rock and hill, having to carefully consider each step as if it were your last, and having to carry all the stuff you had now was getting to you. What you will say though is that these massive boulders and rocks were good cover. Though you hear concussion blasts only get worse when you hug a boulder. Regardless, you were getting close. You could feel it. You could smell it.

You sniff.

Oh shit. You can smell it. Something is burning. That’s not good. You press yourself onwards then you start to see sandbags strewn about the trail up, along with crushed barbed wire. You keep on moving.

“Watch it!” Nielson groans loudly. You stop. And thank God you did. You almost stepped in that pit.

Wait. You look closer. That’s not a pit. That’s a footprint. A Rex was here. The footprint was almost as long as you are. And the depth certainly did not flatter the lizard’s weight either. More footsteps lead up there. Great. You step around it, then steel yourself. If it were here, you’d have heard it. You keep moving onwards until finally you crest the top of the trail.

Again, your hopes are dashed. The place looks deserted. No, deserted implies people just up and left. This place was ransacked, pillaged, raped, looted… Broken bones of devoured soldiers were strewn all over the place. Blood, both human and lizard was soaking the ground. The fortifications were completely ruined as well. But no time for that. You need to take stock of the situation.

Devil’s Den was a circular firebase, with a massive boulder towering upwards on the north serving as the highest point of the hill. The hill top was actually quite large, large enough to comfortably squeeze in three dropships at once. The rocks that were here were cleared out by Suits and combat engineers, allowing for a relatively flat expanse that included a landing pad for three dropships, and three prefab buildings. Trenches were dug all around below the crest on the downward slope, though the east side appears to be unfinished (and full of bodies). And unfortunately, it seems most of the heavy cannons were used as teething toys for the Raptors and Troodon. Their barrels were munched on and bent and rent to the point of uselessness. Not to mention their power packs have long been expended in battle.

You sigh, groaning. Alright. Maybe you can work with this. The landing pad was clear save for a few containers. The three prefabs though were different. One was completely ruined, probably a Rex crushing it under its feet. But you could tell judging from the knocked over comm antennae and the ruined communications equipment that it must’ve been ground command. The other two though had signs on them. One was “STORES” and the other was marked “MEDICAL”.

The Stores prefab looked like the most complete building, and was the largest. The Medical Prefab though looked complete as well, though you notice a distinct lack of a door. You shudder to think what happened inside there.

Alright. What do you do?

> Check the Medical Prefab, for medical supplies and some place for Nielson to rest. If you’re extremely lucky, an Autodoc might be working.

> Check the Medical Prefab, for medical supplies and some place for Nielson to rest. If you’re extremely lucky, an Autodoc might be working.

You poke your head inside, and immediately choke back the urge to vomit. The entire place was covered in blood and bones. Hospital beds were soaked in blood. Skeletons and bones were crushed and broken to pieces on the floor and on the beds. Medical equipment and tools were dropped and thrown all over the place. But the smell. Oh God, the smell is horrific. It reeks of death and decay in here. You could even see insects preying on what guts and gore the Troodon and Raptors didn’t have their way with.

Damn Lizards are going to pay for this.

You step inside. Nielson vomits his guts up, spraying the floor with his vomit. “Augh-… what the hell!?” He must’ve caught the smell too. Thank God he didn’t get any of that on you. You look around for a clean bed. Instead, you find a clean-ish bed. This one was merely just covered in blood. You place Nielson down on it. “Aah… what happened in here!?”

“Lizards probably broke in. Lot of wounded men in one place? Like a fox in a hen house,” you say. You look around. “I’m going to look for something to take the edge off, okay?” He nods, resting his head back. You start looking in shelves, drawers, everything. Anything useful is either gone or been ruined by sitting in blood all night and most of today. You jog up to the surgery area and pull the curtains back. More blood, bones, even a bit of brains and bile.

But there was an AutoDoc. The AutoDoc is more or less just your standard Service Bot with a bend towards surgery and medical expertise. It was humanoid in shape, with arms carrying medical equipment. Unfortunately, this AutoDoc was lying on the ground because a Troodon slashed its chest open. Not to mention the head was also crushed too, probably by a Raptor foot. It could be fixed, but you’re not a mechanic or a roboticist.

You keep looking around. Eventually you get into a little store area surrounded by chain link fencing and look in. Most of the supplies have been used up.

But what you do find are three syringe shots of Pain-Stop (never take more than one shot a day, Pain-Stop is designed to completely block out pain and overdosing can cause a brain hemorrhage).

A syringe shot of Adren-O-Line (Adren-O-Line is designed to enhance your reflexes significantly and give you more power to the muscles. Also don’t take more than one shot a day or you will suffer heart failure.)

Three jars of medi-gel. Two splints. A cryostasis bag with several holes and rips in it (for transporting patients for long periods of time). And a bonesaw. Alright, this is a start you suppose.

You sit down next to Nielson and sigh. “We got a few jars of medigel and some pain-stop. You interested?”

He nods. “Just the gel.” He hisses, groaning. You look at the bandage wrapping around the point where his arm was nearly severed. “No Pain-Stop.” You nod. You grab some gauze out of your IFAK and start replacing the bandage, along with applying a bit more medi-gel too. Nielson’s skin is still pale as a ghost. Not to mention his rather delirious disposition. You imagine the Lizards must have torn open and drank all the blood bags or something because spare blood for Nielson would really be helpful right about now. Even if you do manage to fix up all of his wounds, without blood he’s going to be out of it for a while. “Find an AutoDoc?”

“I did, but it’s busted,” you say. “Head’s crushed so the AI circuitry is probably done for. Not to mention the internal components in the chest.” He looks up at the ceiling, a very flat expression on his face. “You know how to fix an AutoDoc?”

“Barely,” he says. “Show it to me.” You nod. You stand back up, then drag the AutoDoc over to him. He struggles to roll over onto his side to look. He takes one good long look at it, then says, “… oh man that shit is frakked.”

“Just from a glance, what do you need?”

“First off,” he says. “I’d need a new AI for it. The AI in this thing is buggered to shit.” He points to the crushed head. “Secondly. New power pack. As you can see, the Troodon have torn open the power supply not to mention the wiring. I can…” he sighs. “I can work on soldering the wires together and I guess we can substitute the usual battery for one of our rifle power packs. There’s a catch though.”

“What’s that?”

“Plasma power packs are very unstable when tampered with,” he says. “And I’m no scientist. So… that’s just an option. Have we checked the Store house?”

“Not yet,” you say. “Truth be told, I’m afraid to go in there. I mean… you see how this place looks,” you mutter.

He goes back to lying on his back, grimacing. “We gotta get out of this place, man.” You nod. You look over at the door and see the shadows starting to get sharper outside. Darkness is going to fall fairly soon.

You tip up a bed to cover a window, then another bed over another window. You pull another bed over the door too. Once you find a hammer or some tools, you can probably replace the hinges or something. But for now, you also hang some curtains to act purely as a sight blocker so no one can see inside. Lastly, you pull more beds around and tip them over to act as cover in case they do get in. Your last stand point will be where Nielson is laying. “Nielson. I’m gonna check the store house. I’ll be right back.”

“Be careful,” he says. Right then. You move next door to the Store prefab then check the door. It’s open. You push it open then look around inside.

The Storeroom has been ransacked too. Damn it. Well, no blood at least, that’s a good change. Seems in the rush to retreat, most soldiers grabbed what they could and legged it. You look around, crushed C-Rations were strewn about the floor. Several shelves were knocked over too. You notice there’s actually a thin puddle of water under one of the knocked over shelves. Water containers probably leaking. You keep stepping further inside and find several closets and cabinets too. All of them except one closet were torn open, with clawmarks on the outside. Seems the Troodon got into the food stores. But you do notice one of the open closets.

Five powerpacks for rifles and carbines. Fifty shots each. Definitely a good find. You grab them, then hear a faint knocking noise. What the…

You look at the closet that wasn’t open. That’s where it came from.

You pull your pistol from your belt then point it at the closet. Slowly, you advance on it. It could be a lizard in there for all you know. Or maybe something just fell over in there. Either way, doesn’t hurt to check. You grab the handle, then slowly pull it open. The light reveals exactly what is inside.

And inside you see another soldier. A woman. She trembles considerably. Her mask hangs by a single strap by her neck. Unlike Nielson, here skin was more of a healthy brown-ish, and she definitely wasn’t wounded either. She also had a harness capable of supporting a Type 66 Phased Plasma Pulse Cannon too around her belt and around her chest plate and on her back. But what really struck you was the fact that she was holding a pistol at you. You hold your hands up. “Whoa, hey,” you say. She shakes aiming the pistol at you. Bags under her eyes mean she hasn’t slept. She’s probably been awake all night. “Hey, it’s alright. I’m human. See?” You place a hand on your chest, then take your helmet off. “Human.”

She whimpers quietly, sputtering as she lowers the pistol. You look around inside her little closet. Several good C-Rations. A pistol power pack. But you can see tears welling up in her eyes. “A-… Are you the rescue team?” You blink. Huh? “Are we getting off this planet? Are we leaving?”

Play this carefully. She’s clearly not all there in the head.

“Yeah. Yeah. We’re leaving. But you gotta trust me, alright?” The woman stares at you, still keeping her hands on the pistol. “Right now, we have to work together here.”

She sniffles, wiping at her nose and at her eyes. “Alright.” She blinks more tears out of her eyes. “Alright.” She steps on out of the closet. “I uh… I have some C-Rations here. And a few more supplies too.” Okay, good, good. “But how are we going to leave? Do you have a shuttle? Do you have contact with command? Something? Anything?”

Yeah… You glance away for a second, trying to think. Then you say, “First. We need to know what oyu know. How did this happen?” She tilts her head. “You must have been here when things went south. I just woke up this morning. We have a wounded man too. He’s in the Medical Prefab.” Her eyes go wide at the mention of the Medical Prefab. “Can you tell me what’s going on?”

She glances around, then nods. She’s still shaking in her knees, not to mention the way she glances around nervously. “Um… Okay. Alright. Um. Let’s get our supplies together first.”

You move all the useful things out of the Store to the Medical prefab. Five spare power packs for the Carbine, a spare pistol power pack, fifteen C-Ration packs, two of these weird Lizard rations, a Lizard Shotgun with some spare shells, your Carbine with fourty-three shots in it remaining, your pistol with five shots, three knives between the three of you, your IFAKs, three Pain-Stops, a shot of Adren-O-Line, five jars of medi-gel, two splints, a ruined cryostasis bag, and that’s about all you can remember.

On the woman, she also has a pair of frag grenades on her harness. “My name is Tierney.”

“Nielson.” Nielson weakly holds a hand up, introducing himself.

Tierney sits down on the bed while you stand. She starts the explanation. “Things started going wrong when Alpha Company got split up in the woods. A couple of squads were wiped out. Third Squad came out of the woods chased by hordes of Troodon and Raptors. The Suits that were dropped in with us were overwhelmed too.” Goddamn, even Suits? “They took down a lot of Lizards from what I hear but there were just too many.”

“How’d you hear about this?” asks Nielson.

“I was back at base helping the defense,” she says. “The Colonel was in the Comms prefab. We overheard a lot of chatter, lots of stuff from Upstairs and down here.” She takes a breath. “I don’t know what happened but the Colonel legged it on the first shuttle back Upstairs and never came back. After that…” She snaps her fingers. “Major Rainer called a sauve-qui-peut. After that, everything went to shit. Organization went straight out the window. People didn’t know where to go, where the RV sites were. The only thing we knew for sure was that the second wave was not coming.” General retreat order? You don’t remember this. You must have gotten knocked out before all this happened. “Every man for himself. Navy tried to establish RV zones to get troops out quick before we all overwhelmed Devil’s Den. But the Lizards caught the RVs and swarmed them. Then they swarmed Devil’s Den. They used big armored lizards to break the lines first, not the Rexes, these lizards had horns.”

“Ceratosaurs,” you say.

She nods. “Yeah. Ceras. They just charged right through us. Knocked a lot of the MGs over. Flamed out people in the trenches too. Then the Troodon came in. Only a few shuttles came to pick people up, mostly the officers first. They left the… wounded here.” She pauses, hugging herself. “I ran into the Store prefab and hid. Raptors tore the place up but they didn’t find me for some reason. I…” She takes a breath, shaking again as she stammers. “I made it. I heard them. Their cries. Screams. Made sure to keep myself awake all night just in case they came back.”

Nielson frowns deeply, then gently reaches out to Tierney. When his finger touches her arm, she flinches, turning to Nielson in fright. Nielson pulls back, clearly not having intended to scare her. She looks up at you. “You have a plan to get out of here, right?”

“I do.” You look down at her, sternly. “Trust me.”

She narrows her eyes, staring at you. You simply stare back. Truth be told, you don’t have much of a plan except for call for help. You can’t imagine the Lizards have anything space-capable and you can’t imagine that there’s any shuttles left here on the planet to take. No, the only chance is to call for help. It’s a plan of sorts, but it’s still a plan. But judging by how she simply rests her face into her hands and sighs, she’s skeptical. “… I hope you do.” She looks up again, then stands up. Man, for a Heavy Weapons spec, she’s actually pretty short. “Because guess what, you can call for help but there’s no chance the Dominion’s going to come back for a couple of conscripts. Not after the beating we took.”

Nielson squints. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying that if you really do have a plan.” She jabs her finger against your chest. “It better be good.”

“Trust me,” you say again. She shakes her head then goes and walks over to a bed. She sits down and buries her face into her hands again. Nielson looks at you, concerned as well. “I’ll get us out of here, one way or the other.”

“I know you will,” says Nielson. He shakily points to the door. You turn and look.

You sit at the foot of Nielson’s bed. His skin is still deathly pale. From what you understand, what little you understand of medical science at least, you probably prevented hypovolemic shock once you treated him with the medi-gel and closed up his wounds. But he still lost quite a lot of blood, and carrying him all this way to Devil’s Den certainly didn’t do him any favors. He’s stable, for now. But you don’t see his condition improving until you get him a blood transfusion and fix up the lacerations and tears in his body. If the cryostasis bag wasn’t ruined, you could at least store him until the AutoDoc was fixed. InstAid won’t help either, it’s not like that just inserts new blood into the body.

Right now, he stands a good chance of simply dying in the middle of the night without warning. You pray to God that’s not the case. He simply stares up at the ceiling, his eyes somewhat glazing over. You can’t stop him from falling asleep. He needs rest at this rate. Only time will tell if he makes it through the night.

You look out at the door again, then stand up. You walk on over and pull the curtain back and see the star slowly setting. The orange and scarlet sky was slowly giving way to an ocean of stars and galaxies above you. Reminds you of Hopewell somewhat. Binary star system, yes, but Hopewell sat in that nice little zone where it wouldn’t just be a pile of dust and sand.

You shouldn’t be thinking of Hopewell right now. Hurts at your heart to. You look back and see Tierney huddled in a corner, smoking a cigarette claimed out of a C-Ration. C-Ration cans have basically everything. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, choice of fruity drink, pack of cigarettes, pack of five condoms and UBC pills (not just because the Dominion Army accepts both male and female soldiers but for other xenocarnal reasons), toiletries, laxative gum, spork, matches, coffee powder, and other items. They’re quite good. The Dominion definitely put too much time in designing them. But they’re home away from home.

Tierney’s opened one up purely for the cigarettes though. She rocks back and forth, staring ahead at the wall, her hand shaking as she all but sucks off the cigarette she’s dragging off of. Her helmet tips up and down as she leans back and forth too, revealing her hair done up in a very messy folded up ponytail underneath the helmet.

> Maybe helping shore the defenses up will calm her nerves.
> Open a C-Ration of your own, get to talking with her over some food.

“Tierney.” She looks at you, her hand still shaking as if she were wearing a swimsuit to an ice cap. “I could use some help shoring up the defenses here. Maybe get some of the sandbags from outside. Want to help?” She nods, quickly dousing the cigarette against the floor and stomping it out before standing back up.

Right then. The two of you get outside and quickly figure out what to do. You spy an entrenching tool that hasn’t been completely chewed up by Troodon or Raptors, so you quickly acquire that. You and Tierney hurry to get sandbags from the trench closest to the prefabs. The idea is to get the sandbags covering the windows, the only other ways into the Medical prefab, with the only door in serving as your chokepoint.

Good news is that there were two windows, so there wasn’t a whole lot you needed to do. You could even leave a hole so you could fire out at anything trying to get in.

Bad news is that bite that came down on your arm today is finally catching up with you. You had to take the plate off of your left upper arm. Thankfully, there were no cuts, but you definitely feel an ache. Probably some bruising and some scraping of the skin from those teeth. Were it not for the plate, you probably wouldn’t even have an arm. You’ll have to scavenge a new one from a dead body or someone when you get time.

But right now, you busied yourself stacking up sandbags at one window. Tierney as well drops some sandbags too to help you out. “No, no,” you say. “Get the other-“ A flash of light illuminates the area briefly. Lightning. Pretty far away. You look back towards the approaching night sky and se dark clouds covering up the stars. Then the thunder strikes, a low rumble not much louder than your stomach when you’re hungry. Tierney looks over at it as well. “Get the other side,” you finish.

“I already did,” says Tierney. Eh? You quickly hurry on over to the other side. Sure enough, the sandbags were piled high enough to reach the top of the window, with enough of a hole to allow a wide field of view out of it too. She looks at you, her arms still shaking a little bit. “Heavy Weapons Spec?” she assures you. “Carry around a big gun all day. Sandbags are like pieces of paper to me.”

“Well done,” you say. She nods, quickly going back to helping you with your side. You feel some faint drops of water hit your helmet too. Damn. Probably going to be some rain. At least it’ll wash the blood out of this place maybe.

Though…

> Let Tierney finish the defenses. See what else you can scavenge.

You decide to look in the Communications prefab while Tierney finishes up. The Lizards certainly had their way with this place. A few carrion birds fly off when you disturb their bottom feeding as you look through. All the communications equipment is busted, or at least busted to an extent that you don’t know how to fix them. The map table is shredded too. You look over at one of the comms consoles, then see a bloodied book next to the severed hand of a radio operator. You pick it up and look through.

Sifting through its contents, it’s actually a log book. A log book of various incoming and outgoing radio traffic. Sauve-qui-peut was ordered at this time, Alpha Company reported in full retreat two hours into the operation. 101st Division in full retreat and awaiting extraction. Navy reporting that their retrieval boats were being shot down by enemy AA.

Including a medevac dropship for severely wounded personnel at Rally Point Bravo. Hm.

You keep on looking around. You’ll have to sift through more of the logbook later. Because the rain is starting to come down. And it pours down on all of you like you’re all in the showers. Tierney places down the last sandbag then hurries inside. You look around the Comms prefab too, then pick something out from under a table. What’s this?

You pull it out then take a look at it. It’s a motion detector!

> MOTION DETECTOR
> A standard pistol-grip motion detector, used to detect movement through walls and as far as up to 20 meters. Primarily used for urban combat but can also be used in low-visibility conditions as well. Movement is signaled with a high-pitched ping, which gets louder and more repetitive the closer and faster the movement is.

> Motion detectors also track IFF badges on all Dominion Army soldiers. However, it does not discriminate size nor type of movement picked up.

You quickly run back into the Medical Prefab then shake yourself dry a little bit. The rain pounds against the roof of the prefab, sounding something like an army marching at rapid pace. Tierney again sits down in the corner, hugging her legs. Nielson meanwhile appears to have fallen asleep. You check his pulse on his neck. Slow, but it’s there.

> Take the first watch. Tierney needs some sleep after all. If she can get any.
> Open up a C-Ration and relax. You’ve been moving all day.
> Keep looking around outside. The rain is going to severely reduce visibility but it’s best to patrol rather than be locked up inside.
> Other
>>
>>2868136
>Take the first watch. Tierney needs some sleep after all. If she can get any.

> Take the first watch. Tierney needs some sleep after all. If she can get any.

You pull up a chair then take watch at the eastern window. You place the motion detector on the other end switched on so it’ll detect anything on that side and alert you. Right now, nothing to watch but the rain. You lean back and rest the Pulse Carbine in your lap.

You think back to your training as you watch the rain pour down and the skies go pitch black. You remember being in the field, waiting for orders, lying prone on the ground to take cover. Trying to fight sleep was just one thing on top of fighting hunger, dehydration, and stress of being away from home and a simple comfy life back on the farm on Hopewell. Of course, what gave you a great advantage was the fact that unlike most of the people who were there because they were conscripted, you were there because you enlisted. In some fashion, you -wanted- to be there, you –wanted- everything coming to you, and truth be told you –wanted- to have sex with Francine Blake as soon as you graduated.

Of course that last part never happened but you’re never going to tell anyone that. No need to waste what little street cred you have.

What was worse though about being a Scout was that most people in the squad thought of you as their designated “requisitions expert”. i.e. they thought you were the one who could steal things and get away with it. The only thing you know is that you were just good at skipping out on work parties because you were out in the field working your craft, learning to track and survive. You already had a headstart back on the farm, but as a Scout you were ahead of most of the other conscripts.

You lean back further in the chair, sighing. You look back and see Tierney still sitting in her corner, staring ahead. Nielson’s still asleep.

Only been an hour.

You hear a high chirping noise from outside. You ready the Plasma carbine. Tierney apparently hears it too because she readies her pistol as well. You ready the carbine and stand up, keeping the barrel away. Rookie mistake is to stick the barrel out the window. No need to do that. If anything, get as far away as possible so nothing sticks out.

Another chirp. Almost bird-like. Definitely not Troodon. Too small to be a Raptor as well. Definitely on your side. But you can’t see much outside, not without night-vision or thermals. Damn it. You look back at Tierney and signal for her to come closer. She moves up then looks at you, waiting for your word. You point your to your helmet, then at your eye. She nods, then flips down a monocle from her helmet.

[1/2]
>>
>>2868477
[2/2]

Your helmets possess an universal monocle for night-vision, thermal, and infrared tracking. Yours unfortunately is broken. Another excuse to find a helmet that actually works. She peeks through using Infrared. Then she signals you with hand gestures. Small, very small. Smaller than Troodon. She reaches up to her knee. She’s pretty short so that means they must be really short. She makes squeezing clawing motions with her hands too. Scavvers…

Segisaurus? She nods when you signal that.

> SEGISAURUS
> Primarily nocturnal scavengers of the Lizard home planet. Segisaurus never reach anymore than half a meter in height and one meter in length. Although they possess sharp teeth and fast reflexes, they primarily feast on insects and carrion. They do not answer to the larger Lizards, being relatively unintelligent and driven by instinct.

You ask her how many. She holds up three fingers. Three. Alright then.

You take up the Carbine and take a look out. You see their silhouette forms faintly in the mist and the rain. They’re fighting over the ribs of one of your fallen. You peer down the sights and exhale. Take one down.

The plasma zaps one of them. The other two shriek when its head explodes into a fine mist. From their perspective, it must’ve been some kind of Eldritch abomination that’s made their companion’s head explode. You quickly nab the other two in short order. They fall down around the bones, dead as doornails. No chance really. That’s another three shots down. You inhale, then catch your breath. You look over at Tierney, who was looking at this display too.

She looks at you, then says, “Ain’t you a crack shot. I feel safer already.” If you didn’t know any better, you’d say she was being sarcastic. She steps past you and reaches back into her cigarette pack for another cigarette.

“You not going to get any sleep?” you ask.

She shakes her head. “No.” She tears the cigarette open then starts chewing instead on the tobacco inside. “Can’t really sleep.” Understandable. Given what she’s been through and everything. But no sleep is worse than too much sleep. “If you want, I can take your watch for you and you can sleep.”

> “No. Seriously. Get some sleep. Do I have to read you a bedtime story or some shit?”

“I know with all that’s happened you’d have a hard time sleeping, but get some rest.” You really do not feel like arguing the point. “We have a busy day tomorrow and I need you at your best. Alright?” Tierney gives you very conflicted look. She knows she should sleep. But she doesn’t want to. Nightmares most likely. She sighs, then spits her tobacco out and grabs the nearest bed that isn’t completely soaked in blood. Thank God. She lies back and stares up at the ceiling. She’ll fall asleep eventually.

You lean back in your chair again, sighing.

Your stomach growls.

Okay, maybe one C-Ration.

You quickly grab a C-Ration out of the pile then split the dinner option off the bottom along with the miscellanea. You don’t want the smell to carry out, so you tear off the top and reveal the cold (but cooked) chicken and beans inside. Oh to have this hot, but not tonight. You pull a spork out and start carving into the beans. It’s cold, very cold. And as well it’s bland without any heat or salt. But it does the job well. It’s decent, but it could be better. You start chopping the chicken meat up with the spork.

A call echoes out in the night. You freeze. You hear the sharp cracks of plasma fire even over the sound of rain. There’s still people out there. You stand up and look out the window. To the east, you see flashes of blue silhouetted against the rocks and the trees and the rain. You grab your Plasma Carbine. Wait. No.

Not a good idea to get out there. Visibility is nil. You have wounded here to protect. If they had radio contact, if anyone had any kind of telecomms out here, they’d have called you or you could have called them.

You can’t just leave them out there though.

> Don’t do anything. The Lizards have overlooked this place because they’ve already ransacked it. Anything that reveals it to allies will likely reveal it to them too.

You get up and grab the Carbine. You’ll check it out at least. And see what’s going on. You hurry on over to Tierney. She’s actually managed to fall asleep. Damn it! You kick the bed, making her yelp out and reach for her pistol. “Tierney! There’s some guys out there, you hear that?” She freezes, then looks out the window. She sees the plasma bursts and explosions in the distance to the east too. “I’m going out to see if there’s anyone to save.”

“Alright, well, I’ll stay here.” Understandable. You won’t force her to leave if she doesn’t want to. “B-… But hurry back. I don’t wanna be left out here. Okay?” You nod. She needn’t worry. You’re only going out to see what it is. You check the power level on your Plasma Carbine.

> SHOTS LEFT: 40

Plenty.

She stands up and watches you leave out the door. The rain immediately pelts you as you get outside. The brim at least helps keep the water out of your eyes. The mud splashes against your boots as you run out towards the gunfire. Mind the slope as well. You start controllably sliding down the hill to the east to the fight.

Lightning strikes as you jog out to the location. It actually isn’t even that far. You’re not even close to RV Point Bravo. Probably more than halfway at this point. But given the rocks, the rough terrain, the trees, and the low visibility, travel time is of course going to be extended. The plasma cracks become bursts and more audible shots of light across the night. You hear screaming and more plasma fire as you start coming up a hill.

You stop at the crest and take a knee. You move behind a rocky outcropping then see out. Another soldier comes out of the brush firing wildly into the darkness. You’re about to stand up and call out to him when a Raptor minor suddenly pops out of the trees and pounces on him. “AHH! No! No!” The Raptor press its feet against the man’s ankles, then brings down its claw. It rips, tearing out the man’s ankles. He screams, shrieking before picking the man up by his leg and dangling him in his jaws. “Agh! Agh! Help me! Help!”

[1/2]
>>
>>2870371
[2/2]

Troodon appear out of the bushes and trees. Not packs of ten like you saw. A huge horde of twenty. The Raptor tosses the man out to the ground at the Troodon. He claws at the ground trying to crawl away. But no chance. They immediately swarm him. You cringe as they tear him to pieces, tossing gore and viscera into the air. He doesn’t even get a chance to scream. The Raptor screeches in triumph, calling out into the air like a wolf howling into the night.

But that wasn’t the only man out here. You still hear plasma fire in the area. There’s still at least a couple of people here. Maybe if you…

A roar echoes out through the night in response to the Raptor. Not a Rex. Something bigger. Definitely not a Raptor either. You hear more Raptor calls in response to that huge roar.

> Climb a tree and wait for a chance. Someone might wander into your area given how confusing this place is.

You look over to the nearest tree. It’s about five or six times your size. Good enough for height you suppose. You sling the Carbine over your shoulder then get to climbing. You used to climb trees when you were a kid. That was all well and good, fun even. Then one day you fell out and cracked your skull. That wasn’t fun then and you never climbed a tree again until you had to enlist. You’re starting to get flashbacks. Thankfully, even in the wetness of this weather, the tree’s bark is rough enough that a grip is all but assured.

You climb up as high as you can and situate yourself on a strong, thick branch. You can’t keep yourself from falling out since you don’t have rope, so you simply let your legs wrap around the branch. At least you’ll be hanging upside down if you do fall. Right, time to wait. You can’t risk going towards any sounds in this darkness and without your nightvision or infrared working. You’ll just have to wait and see if anyone comes to you.

The first thing that happens that almost spooks you is another huge pack of Troodon rushing past the base of the tree. Unlike during the day where at most their packs would number ten, these packs were numbering in the twenties or thirties. Troodon must be more active at night. Intel definitely got it wrong saying the Lizards were –less- active at night.

Frakking intel definitely got a lot wrong about these lizards. These aren’t the stone age savage animals you were told about. These are savage animals who have guns, weaponry capable of bringing down dropships and retrieval boats, exosuits for boosting their mobility, flamethrowers, even big guns capable of turning back Assault Carriers. Frakking everything about this op becomes more of a clusterfuck the longer you’re here and the longer you have time to think about it. An entire Division, wasted because some idiot didn’t bother to do the research.

“This way!” yells someone in the distance.

“There’s too many!” screams someone else. “Aaahhh!”

“Help! Help me-aaaaggh!”

A soldier comes bursting out of the bushes below you. He looks around, unarmed, dazed. Lightning strikes again and he flinches. For a moment you can see blood washed all over his chestplate. You adjust yourself, crouching on the branch. Then you feel a low rumble. Another. Impact tremors. They’re getting closer. The soldier turns around to where he originally came in from. He steps back, shaking, shivering in the rain.

Out of the trees comes a large lizard, nearly a foot larger than a Raptor, with a blunted horn on its head and plates of armor (both natural and artificial from its combat harness). Flamethrowers linked to its arms are lit up and ready, and on its back was a canister for fuel. The red-skinned Lizard roars, shaking the nearby trees and rocks.

[1/2]
>>
>>2871033
> CERATOSAURUS MINOR
> A lizard two meters in height, with natural bony armor running along the upper part of its body down to its tail. A bony crest adorns its head too, prominently but primarily for display rather than practical use. Ceratosauruses feature prominently as shocktroopers for the Lizard military, and serve as unskilled muscle in their economy as while larger than Raptors, they do not share the same intelligence.

> Ceratosaurus Minors are equipped with armor plating resistant to most kinetic weaponry along its body, leaving the belly, the rear part of the legs, and the tail exposed to gunfire. In their role as shocktroopers, they also dual-wield flamethrowers along with using their natural size and amazing bite to close in melee range.

The soldier falls back flat on his ass, whimpering in fear, shaking as he tries to back away from it. Come on, idiot. Run. Run! He raises his hand up, squealing. “P-… Please! Please!”

One thing he has though is you. You’re higher than that Lizard. Which means you’ve got the drop on it.

You fire a shot at the Ceratosaurus’ head, trying to aim for the eye. You don’t make the eye but you do find the skin. It roars, rearing back before slamming its head against your tree. You almost fall out from the impact. Alright. Maybe not your best idea but…

It slams into the tree again, roaring again at you. You spot a bit of blood dripping into its left eye from near where you hit it. It shuts the eye, then rams its head again into the tree. You hear bark split and splinter with the impacts. This tree won’t last longer. Even less if it realizes it can just set the tree on fire and leave you to either burn to death or fall into its jaws. Neither are particularly good ways to go out. It roars up at you again, revealing its razor sharp long teeth. Yeah, you’re not ending up in there, no sir.

You just have to think here. You look over at the soldier and see him getting back up, shaken. Come on, come on, help. He reaches behind himself and pulls out a machete. Okay, not exactly what you’d use for a fight like this but you can respect that he has no options left at this point. He rushes up at the rear of the Ceratosaurus’ leg and slashes at the unprotected back knee. The Ceratosaurus screams, immediately whipping around and slapping the man with its tail. He goes flying backwards onto his back, groaning in pain.

Okay, your chance!

Okay. You rub your hands together, steeling your resolve for what you’re about to do.

Oh, hell with it. You leap off and aim for the Ceratosaurus. You land smack on the Ceratosaurus’ back, chest first. The Lizard howls in response, immediately backing up and away. Ha! You did it! You landed on a Lizard! You’re riding a Lizard! Haha! Yes! It starts strafing to the side! Ha! You grab onto its fuel tank, spurring it with your boots. Frakking stupid Lizard actually-

It’s strafing into a tree. Oh shit.

You roll over to the side and hold on. It smacks right into the tree, then tries to flex around. But thanks to the armor on its combat harness, it can’t. It can’t even reach around nor can it grab at you with its little arms. It rears up, trying to shaking you off but you hold on for dear life. Okay, remain calm. This Lizard is a lot smarter than you thought it was. Great thing is though too is that it can’t hit you with its flamethrowers.

Yet even despite that, it still tries to torch you with its flamethrowers. It sprays flames all over the bush and the trees, setting them alight in the rain. Alright, think, think! You can’t hold on for long! Your grip is starting to slip!

> Rip out the hoses attaching the flamethrowers to the fuel tank.

> Stab it in the eyes with your knife.

You climb on over to the head and draw your bootknife. It tries to snap at you, but can’t even reach around to you effectively. If anything, it makes getting at its eyes even easier. The moment it tries to lean around, you swing yourself forward and jab the Lizard in its eye. It screams, roaring up in the air as you climb up further and on top of its head. You stab the other eye out, and it quickly throws you off up into the air. You land on your back, right on your backplate. At least the ground is soft from all the mud! The Ceratosaurus whirls around, blinded completely, blood spewing from its useless eyeholes. It smacks into a rock, then right into a tree.

You hurry to stand up and run on over to the soldier. You grab his shoulders. “Come on! Come on!” you shout.

“M- My leg!” he says. “I think my leg is broke!” Frak! You resort to dragging him out. He yells out in pain as you drag him and his useless leg out of the fires. The Ceratosaurus keeps spraying flames as it tries to locate you. But you’re out of there quicker than the rest of the army once things went wrong.

It keeps roaring into the night, with its calls answered by numerous Raptor and Troodon squads howling back in return.

The rain lets up a little, right into a soft drizzle. You rest him at the trunk of a large tree then check his leg. He’s not lying. It may not be completely broken but he definitely can’t walk on it. You touch his knee, and he flinches in pain. Damn it. You kneel down beside him. “What’s your name?” you ask.

“Morrison,” he says, holding his leg. “Who are you?”

“That’s not important,” you say. “Listen. What were you guys doing out here?”

“We got split up from the rest of Charlie Company,” he says. “Sergeant Cope put together an ad-hoc unit after things went to shit. Pulled together anyone that wasn’t part of a squad or a platoon. We had like thirty guys. We even had a Navy Liaison with us with an Orbital Transmitter. We were trying to scavenge some shit from RV Charlie. But the Raptors ambushed us and we all split.”

“What happened to Cope?” you ask.

“I dunno,” he says, still reaching at his leg. “Last I saw, some Raptors were on his and his squad’s ass. Raptors split us up, picked off stragglers, I saw one guy get torn in half by a frakking Ceratowhatever the frak they call ‘em!” He whimpers, hugging himself. “Oh God…”

“What was Cope trying to do? Get to safety? We have a point set up at Devil’s Den, I got two more people up there.” You frown a little. “One’s wounded, severely, but it’s defendable.”

“We didn’t know Devil’s Den was safe,” he says. “Besides, far as we knew, there were still Rexes in the area. I know Cope though, he was… he was trying to find some place safer out west, towards the swamps,” he remarks. “Said the Lizards wouldn’t follow us in there.” He yelps out, grabbing at his leg again, whimpering. “Oh God!”

You have to get this guy out of here. He’s not going to last long.

Then you hear loud Raptor cries. Close. Very close. You hear the bushes rustling around you. Oh shit. You stand up, but he grabs at you. “Don’t leave me here. Don’t leave me here. Please. Please!” He starts sobbing, crying to not be left behind. “I got a family, please! Please don’t leave me here!”

This isn’t like this morning. There’s going to be way more Lizards out there and they’re going to be pissed and alert. He can’t climb either with that leg so getting him up into a tree is out of the question.

You grab him and heft him up over your shoulder. Another mouth to feed you guess. Great. However, you can’t just take him all the way to Devil’s Den, not with those Raptors on your tail. You drop Morrison down by a rock then grab your entrenching tool. You start piling some dirt on him. He knows to stay quiet, because he’s figured out what you’re doing. You’re burying him slightly so he can be ignored.

You hear a shrill cawing behind you. Shit! You duck down and go prone, hoping to hide among the grass. Morrison gets as still as possible, shutting his eyes. Out of the brush come three Raptors. Two of them minors, and another one a slightly larger one with a more armored combat harness. A helmet with a feathery crest and a metal jaw surrounding its lower jaw are added in as well. It does not carry a shotgun like the others, instead possessing what look to be sharp lengthened claws on top of its regular claws.

> ATROCIRAPTOR MAJOR
> Raptor Majors function as squad leaders for small groups of Raptor Minors. Generally, these Raptor Majors are minor leaders in a Pride of Atrociraptors. Like all other Atrociraptors however, they mostly eschew ranged combat in favor of closing in with their enemy and finishing them in melee.

The Raptor Major sniffs the air, then looks at the ground. Shit, it must be noticing the tracks. It lowers its snout, then tears away at the grass in the mud to reveal tracks. Damn it! They’re going to find you.

Right, you’re not going down without a fight. You get your carbine ready and…

Out of the bushes from the side comes another soldier, who is absolutely covered in blood. She carries a machete and a pistol in hand, apparently unaware that she’s just stumbled on a group of Raptors. The Raptors stop what they’re doing and cry out, looking at her. She stops, deer in the headlight looks, before immediately firing on them with her pistol. One of the Raptor Minors pounces at her while the other two move around her sides. “You Lizard freaks! Come and get me!” she screams. She slashes the Minor with her Machete across the head, sending it to the ground, just as the other two move in to engage.

You pop out of your hiding spot and blast the other Raptor Minor in the back of the head. It drops like a wet sponge. Unfortunately you don’t get the Major in time. It slashes her in the head. She screams loudly in pain, holding her head. Damn it! You fire at the Raptor Major. It takes the shot to the neck like a champion, screaming at you as it charges at you with claws raised high. You step back, exhaling sharply. It opens its mouth. There!

You fire.

The shot burns straight through its mouth and down its throat. It falls to the ground, writhing and struggling in pain. Plasma burns to the throat, not even once. The Minor she slashed to the ground too whimpers and whines in pain before you finish it off with one last shot to the head. You hear another loud roar, then look back.

It’s that Ceratosaur and it’s walking around on fire! Oh no! You hurry over to the soldier. She holds her bleeding face. You kneel down and pull her hand back. Agh! Her right eye’s been clawed out! You grab her arm. “Come on, come on!” She stands back up with some assistance, then you quickly go over to Morrison. You help him up too. Another mouth to feed, perfect just perfect. The two of you start waddling away as the Ceratosaur, blind and on fire as it is stumbles around in the rain, smashing into things. Several Troodon form up around it, nipping at its heels apparently trying to guide it to the river or something. “Hold on!” You raise your Carbine again then aim at the fuel tank.

You fire.

The shot lights up the tank and sprays a cloud of fire all around. Troodon run away, some on fire, others in fright. That gives you some time to run off and away.

You finally find time to rest in a little rocky outcropping. Morrison rests back against a rock as the soldier you just met splints his leg after a quick analysis with her scanner. “Femoral facture, left leg. Probably got it when that Ceratosaurus tail-whipped him you told me?” You nod. You had to tell her what happened to him, because apparently she was a medic. On her back she carried a rucksack full of everything she might need for her job.

Despite the bleeding hole where her eye used to be, she continues working as if she hadn’t lost it. You actually kind of worry that she hasn’t tried to cover it either, nor the deep slash marks across her face. “I can splint it and force the bone back into place.” She ties the splint off, and you cringe as you almost feel the bones pop back together. Morrison does his best not to scream, pounding the ground with his fist. “But, to really fix this thing, we need an AutoDoc or like a couple of months for him to rest and heal. Neither of which we have.”

“We have one,” you say. “But it’s busted. We need a new AI chip and a power source.”

“Well, that’s lucky,” says the medic. “We were planning to scavenge that shot down medevac near Bravo before we got split up. Medevacs carry at least two Autodocs, along with all the medical equipment we might need. I have ten shots of painstop, a lot of medigel…” She takes out a jar of medigel and starts spreading it across her wounded face. She flinches as the wounds start regenerating. “Some InstAid, anti-biotics, and a bag of U-Blood. But that’s not going to last us very long if people keep getting hurt.”

Morrison looks at you. “We’re going back to your place, right? No way we can last much longer out here! They know we’re out here! They’re gonna send the Rexes after us too!”

> “Find a place to hide him. I’ll go scavenge the medevac.”

“We need to scavenge that medevac now. Before the Lizards get to pillaging it.”

The medic stares at you. “Are you retarded?” Eh? “Morrison’s lamed, his dick is more useful than his leg at this point.” Morrison stares at the medic, confused by what she just said. “And it’s still a few more hours of nightfall out there, -and- you just alerted a shitload of Lizards that there are humans out here. There’s no way we can get to that Medevac now!”

“If we don’t get to the Medevac, my wounded man is going to die,” you say. “He needs an AutoDoc to fix him up. You need an AutoDoc to fix Morrison’s leg.” The medic sighs, rubbing at her nose. She understands the point. “We can’t argue that point. Now…” You sigh. “I can get there myself…” You pull out the map from your belt. The medic leans in and looks with you. “Now. We’re about here. Halfway from Bravo and Devil’s Den. Where’d you see the Medevac?”

“Here.” She points it out, about thirty meters north-east. “We actually got sight of it before we were ambushed, it’s trapped in a gully and sheared in half. Dropped all of its contents by the look of it. There’s another issue though.”

“What’s that?” you ask.

“There’s an Allosaurus roaming around here.” Allosaurus. Damn.

“You sure?”

She nods. “Definitely.” She shrugs. “Look. I know it’s risky. But I can’t let Morrison get dragged into this. I’m taking him back to Devil’s Den.” She comes over to him, then lifts him up by his arm. “You can do what you like.”

“You’re right.” You stand up, pushing some mud off of your chestplate and your pants. “I’ll take you back but we need to get there as soon as we can.” The medic nods. “By the way, since you’re going to be staying with us, you got a name?”

She nods again. “Graves.” Huh. Weird name for a medic. “Yes, it is a weird name for a medic. You’re not the first person to think that.” Damn. “Come on, lead us back to your place. And quick.” You motion them behind you then start marching. You’ll have to take more hilly roads but you’re certain given the distraction you caused, the Lizards will be more concerned about investigating the fire rather than trying to fan out and find out who caused it. She hefts Morrison along with her as you make your way back to Devil’s Den.

To your immense luck, you didn’t run into any Troodon or any Raptors out while you were returning.

In order to cover your tracks, you enlisted Graves and requisitioned some gauze wrappings out of her backpack. You wrapped them around your boot soles so that they won’t leave noticeable tracks recognizable as human soldier boots. Sure, they’ll still be there, but to the Lizards they could easily be something else in this mud like a wandering Raptor or some other animal. From your position, it was a straight shot back to Devil’s Den.

You all climb the trail leading up to the base. You look back and see the clouds parting away. You noticed an hour ago that the rain was starting to let up. Seems the storm is subsiding. And with it, morning. You rub some sleep out of your eyes then keep yourself moving. Morrison grunts in pain as Graves helps him up the path until finally you reach Devil’s Den. It looks the same as you left. Good.

You walk up to the Medical Prefab. “Friendlies coming in!” you shout. You open the door and find Tierney at the window with the Raptor shotgun you looted. She looks at you, then sighs deeply in relief before standing up and jogging over to you. “We got wounded, make way.” Graves steps past you two then helps Morrison onto a bed.

“Agh, son of a-“ Morrison yelps as Graves lifts his leg up onto the bed. “Could you be a little gentler, Graves?”

Graves kneel down beside him. “Awww, is the wittle boy in pain? Does he want mommy to kiss his fwakking booboo?” Morrison stares at her. “Shut the frak up, you’re fine.” Graves takes off her helmet and shakes out her blonde hair before grabbing more gauze to finally wrap up over her fresh eye wound.

Tierney points to them, confused. “That’s Graves and Morrison. They were with a larger group of soldiers like us but they got separated. Graves is a medic too, she can help Nielson. Is he-”

“Still alive, I’ve been checking,” Tierney replies. Good, good. “But he’s faint.” Graves looks over, paying attention but not adding anything. “I checked his temperature too, he’s going cold.”

“Exsanguination,” Graves remarks. “How’d it happen?”
>>
>>2874393
[2/2]

“Troodon,” you explain. “Almost tore his arm off, cut him to pieces everywhere else. He got lucky that he wasn’t disemboweled otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to save him.” Once she finishes wrapping up her eye, she moves on over to Nielson at the bed. Nielson is limp, but you can see his chest rising up and down slowly.

Graves snaps her fingers, pointing to her backpack. “U-Blood, in my bag.” Tierney leans over and unzips it, pulling out a pack of U-Blood and a tube along with a needle. She takes a bit of a gauze and a wet wipe and wipes away an area on his arm, then injects. “Hold it.” Tierney holds the blood bag from the top of the bag.

“How long do I have to do this?” asks Tierney.

“Until it’s all gone,” says Graves. “Sooooo… like the rest of the day?” Tierney glares at her, a fierce one considering the bags under her eyelids and her bloodshot eyes from lack of sleep. “I’m joking. I’ll rig up a stand now.” She takes a look at his arm, then spies the point where it's almost been severed. "Hm. Not something I can fix. And it looks like it's been infected too. I got a shot of anti-biotics but he'll need some time to shake that off."

“I’ll go loot that Medevac. You guys stay here,” you say.

Graves looks at you in surprise. “You’re not seriously going back out there so soon are you?”

“I am. I told you, we need those AutoDoc parts and whatever is in that Medevac. You can come with if you want to but I won’t force you. Who wants to go?”

The silence says everything.

Graves says, “I don’t know about you, but I have to stay here to take care of these wounded.” She points to Tierney. “I can already tell she hasn’t gotten any sleep at all.” She points to Morrison. “And he’s only going to slow you down. Sorry, you’re on your own.” Well. Fine then. You work better alone as a Scout.

Tierney frowns deeply, rubbing at her cheek. You see Graves already grabbing a tipped over stand. “Look. I’m sorry. But I can’t leave. I don’t want to go out there again.”

“I’m not going to force you to,” you state. “This is for Nielson and Morrison’s sake. Once we get them up, we can decide on what to do next.” Tierney nods. She sits down on a bed, rubbing her face as Graves sets up the blood bag.

“For what it’s worth,” says Morrison. “Thank you.” He offers his hand. You shake it firmly. “I didn’t think I was going to make it out of there.” Honestly, neither did you at some points. But you have to keep moving on if you want to get out of this place. You grab your Plasma Carbine again then set on out once more.

The Medevac crash site isn’t too far from you. And with the rain letting up, visibility was no longer complete garbage. You yawn a little. You haven’t had any real sleep in quite a while nor any real rest. But this is all for the sake of Nielson and Morrison. Not to mention your own sake. If you get injured, whatever you find in there is going to be valuable. You start making the trek out once more.

You find yourself again in the wilderness.

You hear some loud roars in the distance, just as the star starts to come up. You rub more sleep out of your eyes and then shake yourself awake. Staying awake is going to be difficult but not impossible. Adren-O-Line is an option but not one you want to take just yet.

For now you keep crouching through the rocks and the trees and the hills until finally you reach a small rise. You get up to the crest and take a look. In a smoking ruin was the Medevac, basically just a Retrieval Boat with medical equipment and AutoDocs aboard. It has been sheared in half, with its rear at the start of the gully and what looks to be most of the front end inside deeper in the gully. Well, there it is. You take another look.

There’s no Lizards around, no Segisaurus (though it is daybreak so they’re all probably back in their nests), no nothing to stop you right now.

> Check the gully. The contents spilled must be all over the place.

You drop down into the gulley, and find carrion birds pecking at anything and everything. Your boots splash against the wet and watery ground, the gulley has been flooded partially from the rainstorm last night. Bushes and small plants dotted the cliff walls of this gulley, with small rodent like creatures sniffing at things. You can even see a pair of birds fighting over a wet soggy C-Ration. All over this gulley too are items from the Medevac. U-Blood packs that have been punctured and are leaking out their blood, broken syringes that have leaked their contents into the water… You also find the corpse of the Medevac’s crewchief, wearing only pilot fatigues and a helmet. He’s floating in the water being pecked at by birds. A better way to go out than most you suppose.

You grab a bag floating in the water and take a look inside. Empty. But you can at least use this to carry your loot. You grab three jars of medi-gel that haven’t been completely destroyed, a syringe case full of five anti-biotics shots and…

You blink, sitting rusting in the water was an AutoDoc! How did you miss that!? You hurry on over to it then you pull open its head. The AI chip, still in good condition too! You remember the head was busted with the AutoDoc back at Devil’s Den. You simply elect to grab the entire head and pull it off. Nielson said he could solder the wires together anyway. Right, one more thing, power source. You open its chest.

Good news, it’s a cell. Bad news, it’s soaked in water. Gingerly, you grab it. You’re not sure if that’s good or not but…

You hear a Lizard cry above you. Uh oh. Shrill cawing. Raptors.

You quickly dive into the bushes and then lie on your side. You wait.

They drop in, their sickle claws tapping the ground curiously as they look around. One Major, three Minors. The Major barks, scratching its foot against the muddy ground. One of the Minors sniffs the air, growling as they come on over to the crew chief’s corpse. The carrion birds flock away, frightened by the appearance of the Raptors. The Major bites the head of the crew chief and snaps it within its jaws. Blood spills onto its teeth and tongue as it starts feasting on the remnants. The other Minors start tearing the corpse up for their own sustenance too. It takes every bit of willpower you have not to just shoot them down now for desecrating a man’s body.

One of the Minors tears his arm off, then looks around. It bites down, splitting bone and flesh in its razor teeth. The Minor looks down, then notices one of your soft tracks in the mud. It’s not recognizable as a boot print, but it definitely does look off. It takes a sniff of the track, then sniffs the air.

Sweat runs down your cheek. Come on.

It snorts, then goes back to finding pieces of the crew chief to eat. Thank God.

Okay. Focus. They’re all concerned with the body. One of them suddenly raises its head, and calls out in a sharp raspy caw. Out in the air you hear a few more faint responses. Possibly some kind of check-in? You don’t know anything about their language. You were told these Lizards didn’t have a language. And yet they’re communicating across large distances without radios or anything.

You hear a chittering noise behind you. What the… You feel something crawl over your helmet then onto the ground in front of you, a rodent. It looks something like a rat, with a very excitable tail. Its eyes scope in on you, then it nips at your nose. You press your lips together, your teeth grind up against each other. Don’t make a noise. It nips again at your nose too. > Kill the rat, quietly.

You grab the rat in your fist then squeeze tight against your chest. It makes a squeaking noise in distress before you crush the air right out of its lungs entirely.

The Raptors pause, quickly looking around for the source of the noise. They cock their heads, hissing as they look around the gulley. One of the Minors ranges out as you freeze in place. The rat is limp in your hands as clutch it against your chest. Its feet pound against the ground, almost as loud as your heartbeat. It taps its sickle claws against the muddy ground, turning its head left and right as it sniffs the air.

And yet. It doesn’t see you in the bushes. It raises its shotgun then fires a testing shot into the water. It howls at the water, apparently thinking something is in there. It pumps the shotgun, a spent shell flinging into the mud. Then it goes back to its pride. It gives a shrill bark to the Major. The Major barks out to the other Minors. They run to one of the gulley walls, then leap on out, taking their leave. Seems they’re finished with their early meal anyway.

You take a look up, making sure nothing is there. Then you sit up and toss the dead rat aside. You never liked rats anyway. You don’t see how people think they’re cute. Right then. There are still Lizards in the area so you might need to make yourself scarce.

That or they'll be dead soon. A bit ruthless but it's crawling with dino's and we've got what we came for. We can scavenge more later.
>>
> Make yourself scarce now. Head back to Devil’s Den.

Much as you want to try and at least confirm the death of the rest of the crew, you can’t. Not with these Lizards running around. You’ll have to scavenge this place later for more. You grab your bag and hurry up to the gully wall and climb up. Time to get the hell out of here. You climb up, then duck back into the wilderness, just as you hear the loud cry of an Allosaurus out in the distance. You’re not going to mess with that, not with just a Pulse Carbine. You start jogging through, making your way back.

Again, you make it back with no incident. Once you make it back up the trail, you get into the Medical Prefab and see Graves watching over Nielson. Tierney is sleeping in a corner, snoozing quietly while Morrison sleeps as well. Graves looks at you, then stands up. “You got the parts?” You nod, holding up the AutoDoc head and the power cell. “Alright, I know how to fix an AutoDoc, here.” She pulls the AutoDoc body close to her. You kneel down beside her and hold the head out to her, just as she rips the old crushed one out. “How’s the cell, is it good?”

“Uh, it was damp when I found it,” you say. Grave looks at you with a bit of confusion. “I couldn’t find the other AutoDoc, some Lizards jumped into the gulley with me. I didn’t want to take any chances.”

“Well. Is it dry now?” she asks. You hold it out to her. There’s still some residual dampness on the outside, but the clear sheen of the yellow core inside the cell appears to be untarnished. “Alright, it’ll have to do.” She opens up the chest then places the new cell in. You kneel down, watching. She looks over at you while she works. “You just going to sit there gawking? Shouldn’t you be getting some sleep?”

“I’m not that tired,” you say.

Graves tilts her head, giving you mockingly wide eyes and some pouty lips. “That what you tell your fwakking mommy too, froggie? She don’t wet you stay up past your bed time?”

> “Fine. I’ll get some sleep. No need to be rude.”

If stories from /k/ are anything to go by, as a Medic she does, in-fact, do this with everybody.

“Fine, fine. I’ll get some sleep, good God. No need to be rude.” You stand back up, moving on over to a bed. “Do you do this with everybody?”

Graves snaps her fingers, pointing to Morrison. Morrison looks over, hand on his wounded leg. “Uh. Yeah. She does that with everyone. We’re in the same platoon together.”

“I’m not like this with everybody.” Morrison looks at her, sternly. Graves rolls her eyes then says quickly, “Okay, I’m like this with most people, but not everybody. It’s just how I deal with people who whine about their injuries. Or worse, about people who understate their injuries. I once had a guy try to stand up after he lost his foot claiming that all I had to do was give him Pain-Stop and he’d be fine.”

“What did you do with him?” you ask as you settle onto a bed.

“Am I telling you a frakking bedtime story?” she says. You shrug. Is she? She rolls her eyes again. “When he tried to stand up, I shoved him to the ground, sat on his chest, and treated him. He kept trying to fight me claiming he was good to fight. Yadda yadda yadda, you know how guys are, trying to look good in front of women for some reason. Even at the expense of their family jewels.” Morrison twiddles his fingers lightly, glancing away. He’s silent, allowing Graves to explain. “And I’ll tell you this, Tough Guy. Get some frakking sleep and once you wake up, eat a frakking C-Ration. Because I’ll be damned if the only other person here who isn’t wounded and completely freaked out of their frakking mind is going to suddenly collapse of fatigue on my watch. Understood?”

You hold up your hands in defense. “Noted.”

Graves snorts, going back to replacing the AutoDoc’s head.

Morrison looks at you as you settle back. “Hey. She means well, don’t worry.” Yeah, you don’t doubt that.

All you’re looking forward to is being able to sleep with some kind of security.

And sleep you do.

That's it for this weekend. Thank you all for playing. I'll announce in the /qtg/ next for when we're playing next but I think we can squeeze in a session at some point this weekend or the next.

I might even toy with the occasional post all throughout the weekend. We'll see how we do with that.

Until next time. If you have any questions, I'll answer them when I can.

Thanks for running. I'm enjoying the narrative so far. Our of curiosity is the quest going to be us escaping this planet? Or will it continue once we've finished this "arc."
>>
>>2875908
The idea of the Quest is to escape the planet by any means possible, if possible at all. Especially considering the Lizards aren't space capable. If it ends and I feel like it, I may consider continuing past the escape.
