/qst/ - Quests

You are SCP 999, a blobby mass of joy and happiness for all! And you are currently spiralling down into parts utterly unknown, courtesy of a not-too-nice Archmage.

Previous thread: >>2852582

List of Current Traits, Skills and Trinkets.
>Trait- Fearless (B++): You do not fear the darkness or anything within it. Though you might end up somewhat unnerved.
>Trait- Happy Dancer (C+): You tend to dance when you're really happy or when youve succeeded at a great task. You aren't really all that good right now, but you arent exactly bad at it either.
>Trait- Selfless (A): You care far more about the feelings of your friends and allies than you do your own, and will gladly sacrifice your own happiness for them (You have reserves anyhow).

Skills
>Rain-Call (F): You may summon a permanent drizzling of rain (complete with accompanying thunderstorm) in any area that you currently reside within, disregarding any dimensional blockages or other forms of preventative measure
>Snow-Storm (F+): You can spontaneously generate a freezing effect capable of completely encasing an entire area in a layer of permafrost. Requires the use of a Dream Trinket or another active trinket

Active Trinkets
>Dream Trinket: A small odd thing given to you by a wounded being within a dream of a festering city. Grants you the ability to cast Snow-Storm and invert local physical forces. You will not fail again

Friends
>Vuindred the Black: The Archmage who lords over the Shaded Palace. Doesn't seem to like you all that much. Which is okay, because you really like him!
>Wisps/Hursih: Strange manifestations of spiritual energy. Are actually really nice, and even gave you a small tour of the Palace. You can't really tell them apart though.

Previously on 999 Quest:

You had escaped from a sealed room and entered a land of shadows. Therein, you found and "befriended" the lord of said shadowed realm, Vuindred the Black, who brought you to his Shaded Palace (which you weren't allowed to hug, most unfortunately), at which point you met and made friends with several of the spirits living within the Palace. Together, you all decided to enjoy some time together across the Palace. And were soon plagued with terrors great and horrid. You cannot fail them again. You mustn't.

And now, you're moving through space and dimensions (courtesy of Vuindred himself) en route to the Arcadian domains to reclaim an artifact for the ancient Archmage. The feeling is rather unpleasant, if you're being honest, but no time to worry about that! You're about to land.

How do you plan on sticking your drop?

And like that, you hit the hard ground and your form splatters everywhere. It doesn't kill you, and won't really damage you in the long run, but it's still pretty painful.

Nevertheless, you *think* you're in the right place, judging by the swirling madness that makes up the sky above you. Or that could just be you being really dazed by the fall still.

>Reform yourself and take a good look at your surroundings
You pull your jelly-form together from the mess that you got pancake'd into, and take a look around. The are around you seems to be some kind of grove, with trees on every side obscuring your view, many of them from species you haven't even seen before and of ludicrous sizes.

As you continue to look around the strange forest area, you catch sight of several things on the ground around you that you didn't see before. And they certainly don't seem to be extensions of the woods around.

You dance. None of the objects react, but you feel better either way.

You waddle over to the items. There are two books on the ground (one is titled "Arcadia, The Gentry And The Wyrd: For Dummies Edition 10" and the other is labeled "Summoning Tips", written by Vuindred himself), and you also see a bag filled with strange, multicolored gems with a little note on top scribbled "TREATS." You also find a tiny replica of Vuindred's Palace amongst the other items.

You pick up the "TREATS" bag and with practiced care, open it up. The smell of sweet sweet candy hits you all at once, and you have to stop yourself from just gulping it all down right then and there. You pick out a few and pop them into your mouth. They are soft and rather chewy, but also oddly powdery as well, but they're good for the most part.
>Bag of candy gained. Sweet enough to munch on, and pleasant enough to leave you feeling contented afterwards. May or may not be enchanted to a degree

You take the time to pocket the other items as well, and write a small "thank you" into the dirt.

>Climb up one of trees while hugging it at the same time and try to spot some landmarks?
You decide to climb up one f the taller trees, propping yourself up on its myriad long branches (whilst also hugging it all over) and attempt to scope out the area from atop the tree's leaves. What you see isn't pleasant.

An almost literal sea of forces expands out before you on the grounds far below, constantly warring and clashing, green flames erupting in chaotic patterns and at random intervals. Absolutely titanic creatures rise out form amidst the sea of bodies and begin to rain down their wrath agaisnt all beneath them, and though obscured by a heavy fog past the battlefield, you can almost make out the vague shapes of larger things still beyond.

It seems this grove might be one of the only things left untouched by the chaos beyond.

>Well then perhaps it would be wise to read those books Vuindred gave us because we with have an opportunity to do so outside of this grove
You take out the two books you got, and look them over. The one detailing Arcadian powers looks abnormally plain, but has a few vines covering it and pulsating seemingly random colors at the edges, whilst the one regarding Summoning by Vuindred is covered in elaborate runes and sigils.

You decide to pry open the Summoning one first.
>"The act of calling upon anything from the spiritual planes is a most arduous one for most, barring those Mages who have taken to the path of the Mind Arcanum as a Mastigos or who have otherwise advanced their skills beyond those of their fellows. Many a thing that one could call from the Realms Invisible are great beyond all knowing, and to make errors with your own rites could spell doom for both you and everything around you."

>"If you wish to pull something from the likes of the Tenemos or Anima Mundi, one must be prepared to come face to face with forces that could utterly break or subsume them. You may also risk drawing the attentions of high-ranking goetic spirits, so you must also be prepared for such an eventuality. But if you manage to succeed at your goal, you could make a powerful ally in your quest to understand the myriad realm's of this vast Tellurian.

Some of the concepts mentioned are rather lost on you, but you still feel as though you are coming to a better understanding of how some of the magic works here.

You don't actually have the ritual implements to pull off a proper summoning at the moment. Nor would it be a good idea to pull off a summoning in an Arcadian domain, even at war as it currently is.
>>
>>2869757

Well, lets just make that our side-quest. Our main quest is to find Vuindred's artifact, our side-quest is to find the ritual implements to summon a friend! Or we could ask Vuindred for help with summoning after we find his artifact and make it back to the Shaded Palace.

But for now, lets see if there's anything in the grove we haven't seen yet.

>>2869770

>>2869780
>Oh, lets read the other book first, before we forget.
You pick up the book on Arcadian denizens and begin to read through.

>Arcadia; a realm of stories, dreams and most of all, nightmares. The core denizens of Arcadia, known to most as the True Fae, but also as the Fairest, the Strangers and the Gentry, are its masters and in many ways, little more than actualization of Arcadia itself. For the True Fae, one and all, are stories and fairytales made manifest.

>The Gentry are defined by their stories, and require conflict in order to give true life to these stories. For the Gentry possess no souls of their own, no flowing anima to give them purpose, no spirit to take as their own, and so they most play their Game of Immortals, their Feud. A Game that involves devouring each other towards that lofty endgoal of Wyrd Transcendence, to become a part of the eternal thing that formed them from empty story and letter.

>The True Fae are composed out of a Name and a varying number of Titles which protect said name. Titles themselves can be spun into various forms of all sorts; Actors, Props, Wisps and Realms. Actors are creatures, most of them humanoid and can be brought low by most means, Props are objects, things that can do one thing perfectly and irresistibly, and can only be undone by that one thing of narrative significance that is their weakness (though said weakness must be both simple to understand and be possible to achieve, lest the story lose itself). Wisps are but pawns, mass-produced for the purpose of providing a frame of drama or tension, and can be as easily dispelled as any other mass of dust. Realms are the buildings and land itself, making their destruction decidedly tricky by most means.

>Finally, if you remove all of the entity's Titles, its Name manifests and becomes vulnerable, appearing as an Actor that can be fought and brought low, something which will utterly destroy the Gentry in question if successful.

>Though there are other means, dear reader. If you could manage to trick a True Fae into swearing upon their True Name in a Pledge, and then have them break that Pledge, it could remove the entity utterly in a single swoop. Details are scarce, but common theory is that Gentry who fall for such a thing suffer such spectacular destruction that it sweeps through it every Title at once, whilst others state that they simply pop like soap bubbles.

>Of course, the chances of you managing to trick members of an entire race of superlative liars and cheaters is next to none barring certain exceedingly pathetic outliers, so we would recommend the prior listed methods instead.

That was rather...enlightening you must say.
>Trait "Arcadian Versed" (C++) has been realized. You now understand more of the land of Arcadia and its masters than most would at first suspect

You start looking around the grove more, but there doesn't seem to be much else. Aside from all the trees seeming to be oddly leaning in towards you now. And as you look closer at the trees, you see that they're studded with what appear to be glistening eyes. No, not even that. They're completely composed out of eyes, with their 'leaves' and 'branches' being particularly twisted masses of them, supported by strings of a deep red substance with spurs of bone sticking outwards.

And the grass beneath you isn't grass either as you look down now. The green blades writhing about and oozing sizzling mucus, roving masses of tongues reaching out to your form to dissolve and consume. The land beneath you now even feels like it's rhythmically rising and falling, as if it were breathing.

Yep, you're leaving. Right now. Clutching the Dream Trinket, you channel some internal power into it, and already you feel the lashing winds of frost bear down upon the monstrosity threatening to engulf you. It screams, and the limbs it disguised as trees lunge in to enclose and consume you, the bladed tongues beneath you snaking forward at impossible speeds.

By the time they reach you however, you've already changed into a gleaming orange bird and have darted into the air. From above, you can see that the "grove" was just the uppermost part of osme truly gargantuan...'thing' situated in a giant flaming pit of green. Below you, you can see the war at large, an entire ocean of bodies great and small clashing against each other in a maddening tide of death. Dotted around the field of battle, you can see similar beasts to the one you just escape from, as well as several weird obelisks glowing with white light.

You start flying over towards the obelisks, their gleaming rays of white light seeming like a hopeful beacon in this war of unfathomable proportion. And are then nearly taken out of the air by something whizzing by you *incredibly* quickly. Pleasant place, this is.

As you start lowering yourself down towards the set of obelisks, you see that they're situated on a vast outstripping of land, one which the warring armies seem very interested in judging by how a good deal of time surround and try to climb upwards upon it. And you also see a couple more things whizz by you as you make your way down, with a couple almost looking like some of the strange creatures you see clashing down below.

You get lower, and you can see something sitting right in front of one of the larger obelisks gleaming white. You feel like it's watching you.

"It is good to see you, 999, my dear boy. As you can see, we are in a mild predicament" he says, and gestures over to the cliff edge, where hordes of beasts and monstrosities scrabble to reach to the top. "Judging by their behavior, I'd say that these unpleasant things are being drawn by the power of these obelisks, likely to try and claim it for themselves."

"From what I can tell, these obelisks are producing truly staggering amounts of thaumaturgic energy, releasing it into the space around them. I theorize that if it were harnessed, it would be possible to transport us all out of this awful place. But I'd need the time of study them more, something which Spanko has been affording me, but only barely." Blackwood elaborates. "Blorble [I'm on a mission, Blackwood sir. A friend has tasked me with retrieving an artifact for them here]." you say.

The gentleman explorer looks at you with keen interest. "A friend you say? Given what I've managed to learn from my time here, my fine lad, I take it that you have made dealings with a remarkably powerful entity then? Well, it's no surprise I must say. It's only your nature."

"Blorb [I'll gladly help you sir, but where would you use the device to go to if you repurpose it? Back to the Foundation?]" you ask.

"Whilst I do appreciate their work, my lad, they are rather restricting in how they take the allure of adventure. If anything, I'd simply use the device to help me explore these new lands. And to keep it out of the hands of the uncivilized such as the beasts beset upon us." Blackwood explains, waving his limbs through the air as he does so.

As more creatures surge outward from the toils of war, whether by air or from climbing and tearing their way up, you and Spanko come together and meet them. You clutch at the Dream Trinket once more, and begin to sing again as a multi-headed behemoth with a crown of withered stars pulls its way up.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=DYzXKZn_Z3w

The air explodes once more with a twisting power both chilling and frenzied and burning. It washes over the beasts ("Wisps", your mind says), most of which collapse screeching and gurgling from molten throats. Those who avoid the worst of the burst instead ending up picked off by Spanko.

"IMPRESSIVE, YOUNG ONES." boasts a great voice fron above, and as you gaze upwards, you can see a shimmering golden mass, vaguely draconic in shape coming down from the shining madness above. "I HAD HOPED TO CLAIM THESE OBJECTS FOR MY OWN ON THEIR LONESOME, BUT I SHALL GLADLY LAY CLAIM TO YOU AS WELL!"

You dive after the Prince again, and attempt to hug it once more, but it proceeds to casually evade you as it did before. The Prince chuckles and seems like it's going to speak again, but as it attempts to do so, you watch a frenzied Spanko rip through one of its shimmering golden wings with an ear-splitting "CACK!!", sending the creature plummeting down to the obelisk-grounds below. Where several other Actors are now descending upon it, having torn through their own minions to get here.

This probably isn't going to end well. "Affirmativest in butterbeans!", Spanko agrees.

You move thorugh the air and observe. Some creatures here and there seem to glare at you, but none dare come any closer, instead sticking by th Actors guiding them. Your Song must have them terrified.

Speaking of which, those same Actors are now infighting amongst themselves (include the Prince Of Crests Spanko shot down), with some making a beeline for the greater obelisk clusters. You should probably put a stop to that.

"BACK YOU LESSER POWERS. I ALONE SHALL CLAIM THESE GIFTS TODAY! BE NEGLUFED IN MY FLAME WRETCHES!!" He sounds like he's having a good time.

Either way, you quickly come to the center structure, a large diamond like mass of pure white shining with pure crystalline power. And on a ledge in front of it, you see Lord Blackwood valiantly fighting back against multiple Actors of various shapes and forms (one resembling a humanoid mass of salt with its lower body occasionally forming into a quadrupedal thing before dissolving again).

You shout to Blackwood and Spanko to get themselves ready, before you focus on your power and call down a permanent torrent of rain right on-top of the Actors. Ineffective on its own, but with your Dream Trinket, you summon up a Snow-Storm to mix in with the already wet ground. Soon enough, all of the Actors are flopping and sliding along the now slippery ice. You feel like you've gotten better at this magic thing too.

>Administer hugs
>In the event of resistance, hug harder
You wrap your limbs onto the golden draconic beast pressing down upon you, and you begin to hold tightly. The Prince screams in rage, golden light blazing within its throat, and then it stops, the blazing flame ceasing. A look of confusion passes over the Actors face for a brief moment, and is then quickly replaced by panic and a deep fear. The Prince attempts to scrabble free from your grip, but you hold firm. Brilliant white flames trail from your body and start moving onto the Prince, whose own limbs begin to flicker and fade where the flames lick. The Prince begins to scream and thrash in your grasp.

Soon enough, the white flames have covered most of the Prince's upper body, limbs turning translucent and fading away as the flames consume them. You can even see that the flames have snaked their way *into* his body as well, white lines pushing through its throat, white fire erupting from the Prince's eyes and mouth as it screams and tries to beat at the ground in order to throw you off.

You cease your hug and remove yourself from the Prince, as the golden dragon collapses into a screaming and blazing white pile steadily spreading across the ground. Maybe you overdid it a bit?

>Trait Happy Dancer (C++) has attained further realization. Your dance moves have become fairly passable now!

"999, my lad! Move!" you hear Blackwood shout at you. But why-Oh. "That's why", you think, as the white flames erupt into a massive wailing wall of purifying power and begins to encroach towards you, removing all in its path.

>Well then hug the purifying power. Just because it's burning everything doesn't mean it doesn't want to be friends.
You move towards the great expanse of flames. It hurts, tendrils of raw purifying power lashing about at you, but you press on. You reach into the sea of power and pull it close, infusing yourself into it as it infuses itself into you.

"999!", you hear Blackwood call out amidst the chaos, through which you can hear the screams of panicked Actors trying their very best to flee. "This is-my goodness! The emitters! They've been fully re-calibrated! And yet, this might be too much even for them! 999, my lad, you must stop!"

But you can't, not now. As wave after wave of spiritual might crashes over you, peeling back layers upon layers of your being, you hold firm. You hold on until you reach the end of it. And then you see something. Something at the center of th3 light, at the center of yourself.

Something writhing and Scarlet. Dancing in a heart of chaos.

Suddenly, all goes white, and you fade into black.

It's Stephen Hawking like literally. He's from Shin Megami Tensei or SMT for short a japanese game series about summoning demons and battling cosmic entities think pokemon but with demons and the setting is apocalyptic. He's the one who first made contact with the expanse (kind of like Warp its shaped by human thoughts beliefs and emotions) and created the demon summoning program which as the name implies summons demons. Despite his appearance he's an obscenely powerful cosmic entity and a servant of the setting's supreme being the Axiom. Interestingly demons and WoD Fae are quite similar they both are roles/concepts given shape Fae take up roles to keep their sense of self but demons ARE their roles created by humans to explain phenomenon
Personally I enjoy seeing these different settings in one place (I love SCP and SMT so this quest is like a dream come true for me) and seeing their cosmologies interact in addition I even discovered new settings such as WoD

Took long enough, but here's the updated trair/skill/friend listing.

Traits
>Trait- Fearless (B++): You do not fear the darkness or anything within it. Though you might end up somewhat unnerved.
>Trait- Arcadian Versed (C++): You now understand more of the land of Arcadia and its masters than most would at first suspect. Take that, Foundation!
>Trait- Happy Dancer (C+): You tend to dance when you're really happy or when you've succeeded at a great task. You aren't really all that good right now, but you aren't exactly bad at it either.
>Trait- Selfless (A): You care far more about the feelings of your friends and allies than you do your own, and will gladly sacrifice your own happiness for them (You have reserves anyhow).
>Trait- Scholar of Realms (F-): You understand how some of the realms of this new land function, as well as basic summoning work to call upon thier denizens. Of course, only in the simplest possible form of such.

Skills
>Purifying Touch (B): Your very touch can set truly evil beings ablaze in purifying white flames. Truly, hugs are no laughing matter with you
>Song Of Fury (E+): Through the power of song, you can call up a storm of pure melting power to descend upon your foes and teach them their follies.
>Rain-Call (F+): You may summon a permanent drizzling of rain (complete with accompanying thunderstorm) in any area that you currently reside within, disregarding any dimensional blockages or other forms of preventative measure. You're getting better at calling down the rain in difficult situations, but it's not winning any talent shows any time soon.
>Snow-Storm (F++): You can spontaneously generate a freezing effect capable of completely encasing an entire area in a layer of permafrost. Requires the use of a Dream Trinket or another active trinket. Your usage of this skill has grown your ability to manipulate it. You can make ice-slides now!

Active Trinkets/Other Items
>Dream Trinket: A small odd thing given to you by a wounded being within a dream of a festering city. Grants you the ability to cast Snow-Storm and invert local physical forces. You will not fail again
>Toy replica of the Shaded Palace: a miniature version of Vuindred's own Palace. Perfectly huggable, but its definitely not the real deal.
>>Bag of Treats: Sweet enough to munch on, and pleasant enough to leave you feeling contented afterwards. May or may not be enchanted to a degree.
>Summoning Tips, By Vuindred The Black: Exaclty what it says on the cover. Vuindred gave you this for whatever reason, seemingly feeling it relevant reading for you. You should thank him when you next get the chance.
>Arcadia, The Gentry And The Wyrd: For Dummies Edition 10: A book giving a general rundown on the nature of Arcadia and the powerful beings that rule over it. Certainly helps with distinguishing between the various Arcadian horrors, that's for sure!

>Dr Spanko: The greatesteth Doctor in the fourth crackledoodle! Cack! NeinNeinNein is much gratitudes for friendiest goldojellodip on the swimming pole!
>Lord Theodore Thomas Blackwood: Gentleman explorer, dashing hero and collector of the strange. One of the finest companions you could ever ask for, Foundation or otherwise
