The five of you examine the corpse of the Pachy set up on the lab table. That’s you, Graves, Nielson, Wexley, and Whitney. Whitney says, “Wow, how did y’all even manage to get this sunuvabitch? He looks pretty mean.” You have to be blunt, you’re not sure if that dome head is worth anything in terms of meat. The legs though, they particularly powerful. But that might mean something chewy. The flanks? Probably. The tail though, there’s definitely going to be meat in there. Nielson carefully sharpens his knife, looking at it, trying to figure out where to butcher it.

“Nielson, go work up a cooler,” says Wexley. Nielson nods, sheathing the knife and going to get the parts. “Right. Um. I think let’s start off safe. The tail.”

Graves folds her arms. “We’re really going to be eating the local wildlife?”

“I don’t see much of a choice,” says Wexley. “And given either living the rest of our lives starving off of C-Rations and weird tree fruit, or eating these magnificent beasts who have bountiful bellies full of meat, I’d say the latter.” Graves rolls her eye, but she doesn’t protest that’s for sure. He takes his machete out then quickly chops the tail off of the Pachy at the base. Blood starts seeping out from the severed tail and from the body. “… right, we probably should’ve bled this bad boy first.” You were about to say, you can’t just chop things up now and not expect shitloads of blood.

Whitney sighs. “I’ll get the fecking bucket.” Whitney hurries over and then slides in a bucket to take in the blood. Still, in that tail looks to be quite a feast. You might be eating a good dinner tonight. Wexley rolls his sleeves up then takes his gloves off then starts chopping the tail up into sections, slicing straight through the bone with his machete. You look around, and notice that Tierney doesn’t seem to be around.

“You seen Tierney?” you ask Graves.

Graves says, “She said she was going to fill in for Connell in watching the Steno. Why? Did you reconsider?”

“Recon-“ You blink. “Did she tell you?”

“Everyone tells me everything,” says Graves. Seriously!? Wow. Seems when they built Tierney they forgot the courage but not the discretion. “They seem to think I give a shit about what they think.” Seriously? “I mean, I do. But like… wow, you got nobody else to talk to? Anyway. I’m surprised at you, Tierney’s a nice girl you know and-“

“No, no. It’s not that,” you say.

“What. Does she have to be this tall to ride this ride?” She brings her hand up to your shoulder. You roll your eyes.

Wexley looks at you and Graves. “Oh my God, just suck his cock already, Graves.”

“I would if he’d let me,” says Graves firmly.

Welcome to No One Gets Left Behind.

To recap: You've just found out the Dominion Fleet has left the planet, leaving all of you stranded until they come back (if they come back). After fending off an attack from the savage black-faced Deinonychus pride, you tried to explore inside this Starship that F-Sergeant Whitney has made a home out of and has invited you all to stay in.

But tensions are starting to rise and people's true colors are starting to unravel.

We've really got to deal with Tierney, I say next time we hunt we should tie up one of those small animes, drag it back to camp and have her shoot it in the face. I don't know if Tierney likes our Pet Dino but if she does then threaten to have Burke shoot it if she doesn't kill the animal. Carrot isn't working, we need to teach her like how dad taught us

Getting real sick of her shit
I think we should just give up on her be honest. Chuck her in the rear guard/give her cooking and cleaning duties
>>

Fuck it, we'll do that. If she can't kill, then she'll be quartermaster. I like Tierney, but if she can't fight, she can't fight.

We talked about what to do last thread and it involved taking her off of combat duty and putting her to use INSIDE the ship, safe and sound. We're going to have to tease what other skills she has out of her, but she should be able to perform much better without the stress of constantly fearing for her life.

Some people just aren't made for combat. Not only that, but I'm pretty sure she's a conscript.

> “I’m just concerned given what went on with Godwin out there.”

“I’m just concerned given what went on with Godwin out there,” you say. Graves tilts her head, confused.

Wexley says, “Oh, Godwin grabbed Tierney’s ass and Tierney nearly broke his wrist.” Yes, thanks for the explanation, Wexley. Graves however looks ready to blow a gasket, furious as can be. “You know, he was doing his typical creeper schtick.”

“That inbred hick motherfrakker!” Graves shouts. “So he likes grabbing butts, does he!?” She starts to storm towards the door, outraged. “I’ll show him-“ You grab her arms and quickly press her down into place, stopping her. “Ah, frak you!”

“We can deal with it later,” you say. Graves rolls her eye, snorting. “Besides, Tierney almost broke his wrist anyway, I think he’s learned his lesson enough. Let’s not send him on a rollercoaster of beatings.” Much as you’d love to. You can’t completely antagonize Godwin just for this. “Look.” You take Graves over to the door, leaving Wexley to start chopping the meat up. “It was kind of out of character for her to do something like that. You know, Tierney’s so gentle and then out comes that. Plus, there’s still the issue of her just-”

Graves holds up her hand. “I’m gonna stop you right there, Daddy. Tierney looks up to you, you know.”

“I know that,” you say.

“She totally wants to bang you too,” she says.

“… yes I know that,” you say, quietly. “I mean, I told her that she didn’t need to repay me with sex just for saving her life, you know?”

“Yeah, she told me that,” Graves explains. She folds her arms. “Listen, can I give you my honest input on that?” You nod. Graves has never steered you too wrong on these things. “Tierney’s crushing on you really hard, Daddy. You know, aside from the whole thing where she almost died for good and the entire situation she’s in right now, it must’ve taken her quite a lot of willpower just to proposition you for that. And you kind of just assumed she was doing it because she felt –obligated- to do so.” She… You blink, listening. “She wasn’t. She wanted that.”

“You’re saying the way she is now, that’s my fault?” you ask.
>>
“No, not at all, you have every right to say no,” Graves says. “But you telling her that must have really put a damper on things for her. I’ll be honest, it’s a no-win situation for you. You have sex with her, you might feel obligated to coddle her and she doesn’t get any better. And worse, one of you dies and the other goes nuts and best case turns into a Section 8. You refuse, she gets depressed and well, here we are.” Her face turns down into an expression of both concern and sorrow. It’s contagious, you’re not really glad to be talking about something like this either. “She wants to impress you. She wants to show you she can be a girl for you.”

“Well, what do you expect me to do?” you ask. “I’ve tried to train her, I’ve tried to show her how to do things. She freezes in combat, hell, she almost got me killed. She did it again just last night,” you remark. Graves nods, understanding. “I- I can’t be there for her all the time. She’d probably be safer here inside the ship doing… cooking or cleaning or maintenance work.”

“I agree,” says Graves. “I can’t really tell you what else to do except be careful.”

“She’s not going to die while I’m here, that’s for sure,” you say.

“No. I’m not saying that,” Graves says. “I’m saying watch out for –her-.” What? Tierney? Is she serious? Graves steps up, whispering to you. “Some people are really good at hiding how frakking crazy they can get when shit gets serious. Don’t give Tierney too much grief.” She pats your arm, nodding. You nod back.

Graves stands around. “You know, I don’t really have anything else to say so I’m not sure why you’re still here.”

> Go help Wexley butcher the Pachy.

“Well. That Pachy isn’t going to butcher itself,” you remark. You walk on over to the lab table, where Wexley has managed to succeed in cutting the tail into ten separate yet equal portions. He then cuts those portions into something manageable by halving them, sort of like the filet on a fish. He cuts around the bone then places down the juicy meat on the lab table to rest. Meat with the tough leathery skin. Might need to skin it later you suppose. “How’s this coming along?”

“Tail was easy enough,” he says. “The rest of the body though is going to be an adventure I’d reckon.”

“Fair,” you say. “How about we gut him then butterfly him?” you ask.

“Good idea.” He gently sticks the knife into the skin, then starts cutting. You’re immediately assaulted by an incredible smell. “Augh! Frak!” You wave your hand in front of your nose. Graves simply pinches it shut, glaring at it.

Graves huffs. “And I thought they smelled bad on the outside.” Wexley proceeds to pull the intenstines out and drop them into the bucket. Surprisingly enough, the internals seem to more or less resemble something you’d find on any Dominion planet. It has intestines for one thing. Guts, bladder, heart, lungs, everything else. No organs that you can see that seem foreign to you. They all appear recognizable. Though, what you’re going to do with the guts is another question. You don’t want to just waste them, you’re no savage.

Wexley points to the head. “Hey, go ahead and cut the head for me, boy.” You nod, then pull your machete out. You rest the blade at the base of the neck where it meets the shoulders, then chop. The head lops off in one smooth go, rolling off the table. More blood starts seeping down. “Whitney, another bucket please!”

“Jaysus fecking Christ.” Whitney comes over with another bucket to catch the blood from the stump of a neck. Early follows behind her, curiously watching as you two chop the Pachy to pieces. “Augh, smells fecking terrible too. Is this really gonna be our dinner?”

“I hope so,” you say. “Just because it smells bad doesn’t mean it’s rancid. It just means the smell isn’t familiar to us. Once we get it cooking. Or hell. Wait. We should probably boil it, right?”

Wexley blinks, confused. “Why boil it? You ruin the flavor if you boil it.”

“Yeah but think of where this guy’s been, all the shit he eats,” you explain.

“Frak that. You saw him munching on that fruit. He’s probably vegan as frak,” says Wexley. Nielson opens the door, then comes in with a metal box with appears to be a pair of powerpacks and some kind of motor and fan attached to the side. “Is that our cooler, boy?”
>>
“Yep!” Nielson grins. “Didn’t take too long to rig up though holy shit, you guys have been busy.” You and Wexley are now busy separating the ribs from the spine. “Damn. We having a barbecue or something?” You wish. There’s no sauce or anything. Though, given what’s outside, maybe you can whip something up. Nielson walks up and picks up a piece of tail meat. “Wow, this looks pretty chewy.”

“Don’t eat that raw,” you warn. Nielson quickly puts it down. “Anyway Wexley, helps to be safe.”

“Yeah, but…” Wexley sighs.

Nielson snaps his fingers. “Oh. Boss.” You look at him. “Hey, you respond to boss, hehe!” He grins, sniggering. You shrug. May as well. “Listen, uh. Lieutenant Harrell wants you for an away mission.” He steps up to you. “He wants Joffrey found as soon as possible. Either we get him back or we at least confirm he's dead.”

“Joffrey? No way we’re getting him back, not in this environment,” says Wexley. Nielson cringes a little, obviously thinking of what happened to Horner and Bakker.

Whitney tilts her head, confused. “Who’s Joffrey?”

“Our combat engineer, an actual one,” you explain. “He came up with Lieutenant Harrell in the same platoon but he got missing when Harrell sent him, Horner, and Bakker to look for the transmitter. Horner and Bakker bit it. But Joffrey’s missing.” Whitney nods, sorrowful, not sure of what to say then. “And I understand but that’s a tall order. We just fought off an attack yesterday. There’s no telling if they’ll come back. Or hell, if they’re waiting for us to leave.”

Nielson nods. “Yeah. He was debating sending Burke. But he wants to send one or the other, not both. He says having you both away at one time is what got Joffrey and his team in their mess.” You won’t feel guilty. At least, you try not to. “Should I tell him to send Burke instead? I mean, you’re still healing and everything. She’s still able.”

“Tell him to hold on, I’ll go talk with him about it once I get time. Right now we’re in the middle of a delicate operation here butchering this here, Pachy.” You blink, remembering something. “Did you manage to save those Dimmies too?” you ask.

He nods, smiling. “They’re in the cooler already.” He opens the cooler up, a blast of cold air comes out to reveal the Dimorphodons in there being cooled and preserved. Excellent. And there should be enough room for at least some of the Pachy meat as well. Heck, if anything, you might need a second cooler. Question is, where are you going to get ice? “Want me to pluck them? I’ve plucked chickens before. These don’t seem any different.”

“Go ahead,” you say. “But do it carefully.” Nielson takes one then starts pulling the feathers off of one of them, carefully and neatly. Meanwhile Wexley plants down one side of ribs down. The size of that side, it could probably last this entire group two days or so. This Pachy alone is probably worth at least a few days worth of meat. Seems this hunting trip was worthwhile. You can’t imagine how much meat could be in one of those Parasaurolophuses though. That’d be a dream.

“Alright.” Wexley smiles, placing down one of the legs onto the floor as he gathers up the tail sides. “We’ll save the tails. And the larger portions, like the flank and the legs, I think we’ll eat first. Best to get the large meat out of the way so it don’t take up too much space in the cooler.”

“Fine by me,” you say. “You know how to cook?”

“Yeah. I think we need a fire though, ration heaters aren’t going to cut it here,” he remarks. That’s a fair observation given the amount of meat here. “Plus, we’re going to run out of salt and pepper packets from our C-Rations too. We won’t have any seasoning in maybe a week or two.” You didn’t think of that, frak. Oh well, bland meat is better than no meat. “But hey, successful mission to grab some meat. I think we did well.”

“I don’t think, I know,” you say. “This was a good idea you had, Wex.” He grins, nodding.

Whitney shudders, watching as Nielson plucks and skins one of the Dimorphodons. “But do ya have to do this in my lab?” She almost slips on a stray puddle of blood. “It’s so unsanitary!”
>>
“Hey, this is our lab now,” says Wexley.

“There’s like other labs you can use though,” Whitney remarks. “Heck, Tombs and Stoakes had an entire one for themselves the night before come the night previous!”

“Did they even have sex?” asks Nielson. “I don’t- I mean, I’m not sure I heard anything.”

“Wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t,” Graves says. “Tombs is a little…” She makes a whirling motion near her ear. “He’s a good guy. But still. Not to mention he’d probably split Stoakes in half.” Wexley and Nielson start sniggering quietly. “Oh, very mature you two.” You cover your mouth, exhaling very quietly, trying not to burst into laughter at the mental image. “Oh come on, even you, Daddy?”

“No, no,” you say. “Just-… it’s nothing.” She rolls her eye.

“I’m going to go check on Tierney and that Steno,” she says as she walks to the door. You notice again that slight sashay to her hips as she walks away. Wexley notices too, judging by the slight whistling noise as she sorts out the meat. She’s out of the door right quick.

Nielson smirks. “Well, I think I-“ He turns and sees Early quietly standing next to him. “AGH! Son of a- Oh. Early!” Nielson holds his chest, shaking a little. “You scared me. D- Don’t just stand there quietly like that.”

Whitney pouts then says, “Hey, don’t be rude. She just wants to see how you’re plucking them things.” Early nods, curious.

After a few seconds of processing that, Nielson nods slowly. “Um, alright. Well. Here, let me show you, Early.” Early leans on the table, watching as Nielson rolls up his sleeves (very slowly, as if to show off) before he starts plucking more feathers off of the Dimorphodon. “It’s pretty simple. Even you can do it with some practice. Important part is to be patient, because you might tear the skin and that makes more work for you when you have to clean up the meat.” Early nods, watching closely with those rather empty looking eyes of hers.

> Follow Graves and check on Tierney and the Steno.

You decide to leave and see where Graves goes. For now, it’s best to check on Tierney perhaps and see how she’s getting along.

You walk down the hallway, finding Hood talking with Connell. “And boom! Fast as lightning, she grabs his wrist and starts breaking it in her hand like it’s nothing!”

Hood waves it off, grimacing. “Get outta here. Tierney couldn’t break a leg if she fell off a building.” You decide to ignore those two for now. It’s not like you can stop the spread of rumors anyway. And besides, once they see you, they stop their gossiping and immediately change the topic. “Besides that, you hear the stuff they just brought on? I hear we’re going to eat some real meat tonight, not none of that stuff in the C-Rations.”

“Shit, I helped bring that stuff in, looks delicious,” Connell says.

You walk up to the lab, then open the door to find Tierney sitting on a box with Graves standing next to her. Tierney has her rifle resting in her lap as she stares at the Steno. You walk inside then find the Steno pulling out wires from beneath the floor panel. What the hell? You look at Tierney. Tierney looks at you, forlorn. “It’s just been exploring the lab, Connell tells me.” She points to a pile of scrap metal and debris on a table next to it. “I think it might be trying to build something.”

“Hopefully not a radio,” you say. You reach into your satchel and pull out a piece of tail meat. The Steno stops its exploration and immediately fixes its eyes on the piece. You toss it to him. He catches in its mouth then immediately starts chewing and munching. He probably hasn’t eaten anything that sizable in a while, so for him probably a welcome relief. Hopefully he’ll understand you have more and he’ll get more if he behaves. “How are you doing, Tierney?” She shrugs, glancing at the floor.

Graves folds her arms, tilting her head. “Daddy, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you only came in here because I did. Are you fixing for a threesome or something?” Tierney immediately goes bright red before shoving Graves away. “What? I didn’t ask you. I mean, you can be part of it sure but don’t get pissed at me.”

“Graves, please,” you say. Graves snorts, rubbing her hands lightly. “Tierney?”
>>
“I’m fine,” she mutters. “I hear you had a good hunt.”

“Picked up a Pachy and some birds,” you explain. “They’ll feed us for a while. Not to mention hopefully we’ll see if we can eat other things on this planet. Maybe even leave an offering for the Deinos, see if we can appease them or at least get the Reds on our side.” You wouldn’t mind getting the Blacks, but given what they tried to do yesterday, you’re not so sure. Tierney nods, not looking at you. In fact, she seems to be trying to avert her gaze. “Listen, Tierney. Um, I just wanted to talk with you-“

“About last night?” she asks. You shrug. She’s got it on the money. You were actually kind of hoping you’d ease her into this but it seems she realizes her situation. “I-… I’m sorry. I can’t say much else but that. I-… I just never seen anything like that before. There’s no Dominion robot like that. Plus, I’ve always been afraid of needles too. I mean, aren’t you?” You are, but that’s not relevant. She looks at the Steno as it eats the meat. It’s savoring it, before taking a look at Tierney. Tierney glances away, to which the Steno keeps on eating, ignoring her. After a few seconds, Tierney huffs. She steps off the crate then looks you dead in the eye. “Look, I’m begging you. I know I messed up. But give me one more chance to make things right. I hear Lieutenant Harrell wants to go looking for Joffrey. If you take me with you, I won’t let you down, I promise. This time for sure.” Graves tilts her head, looking at you expectantly. Seems she’s right on the money.

“Tierney, Lieutenant Harrell probably only wants me to go. Either me or Burke. Now, I’m willing to give you a chance but I can’t take you out this time. Not the best time.” She deflates a little, her pleading expression replaced with a somewhat disappointed one. “That said, I promise you, you’ll get your chance. In the meantime, I want you to see what you can do to help around the ship. Bitter truth is that we’re stuck here, who knows how long, could be a long time. And that means trying to sustain ourselves.” Tierney nods slowly, listening. Graves places her hands on her hips, watching quietly. “Now, I’m not blowing smoke here when I say I’d feel better having a couple of folks helping out with that, figuring things out. I scout, I hunt, I can lead too, but we should figure out our inventory, our food, rationing, everything. Can I count on you to start on that?”

Tierney takes a breath, nodding. “Y-… Yeah!” She takes a firmer expression on, nodding more eagerly. “You can count me.”

“Right. And if you need help here, Graves can help you,” you say. “Right, Graves?”

“I’ll treat her like my bottom bitch,” Graves states. You glare at him. Take this serious, Graves. “Fine, fine. I’ll show her. Jeez.” Tierney nods, smiling at her, then back at you. “Tierney, once your watch is up, come find me. I want to get an inventory on how many meds we got and what we can distribute to everyone.”

“Got it!” Tierney grins, sitting back down.

“Alright.” Graves pats Tierney’s head, to which Tierney giggles at being praised. “Ugh, I hate being patted on the head, you know. I can’t believe people actually like that.” Tierney stops giggling, looking at her strangely. “Sorry, I’m not saying you’re strange- just-… whatever.” Graves quickly steps past, heading out.

Tierney points to her. “You know, sometimes I wonder whether Graves is actually serious about what she says or not.”

“We’re in agreement.” You see the Steno out of the corner of your eye pull out your watch. “Hey.” You turn to him. The Steno clicks its teeth, then steps on over. Tierney quickly stands up and levels her rifle at it. “Whoa, whoa.” You grab the barrel, lowering it. The Steno snorts, then holds out the watch in its claws.

It’s giving your watch back? You take it then take a look at it.

… the hell? The watch arms are working now. And they’re-… They’re actually set to relatively what time it should be too! You look at the Steno. It gives a toothy grin, wagging its tail at it. Huh. Can’t be underestimated how hard it is to fix a watch, and yet this Lizard with only its claws managed to do it. It turns around before you can say thank you then dives into its scrap pile to start some maniac project.

“I’ll uh… I’ll keep an eye on it, don’t worry. I’ll shout if it’s a gun,” Tierney says. Right.

> Go find Lieutenant Harrell.

You find Lieutenant Harrell outside next to the Land Rover with Sergeant Cope and Burke. Burke has a map planted on the hood of the Land Rover, pointing her finger on some points of interest. You manage to catch some of their conversation. “… and right here is where we found Horner and Bakker’s bodies. About say ten klicks north of the river, another klick east or so. Now, Nielson and I had some run-ins with the Lizards. Troodons mostly, but no Stenos. The occasional Raptor Minor.”

“What about any of the bigger ones?” asks Sergeant Cope.

“From what I assume, the larger Lizards, the Ceratos, the Rexes, all those lot, they’re being held back. Seems going into the jungle is not something they want to do willy-nilly,” she explains. “We spotted a Lizard camp north of their bodies here, just a half klick out. Mostly just for the Troodon. We think a pack at least twenty or thirty strong led by a Raptor Major and a small pride of Minors, five I’d guess. We didn’t spend too long looking at it but if they captured Joffrey, I assume he may still be in that area. Or if they killed him, then at least whatever bits they didn’t want to eat should be.”

“Um. Thank you for that input, Burke.” Burke nods, folding her arms. Lieutenant Harrell turns around, a very nervous look on his face. “Ah, Corporal. How’s the hand?”

“A little stiff,” you remark. “Hip’s healing nicely though. And despite what Graves said, my back doesn’t feel too bad either.”

“No problem hunching over or stooping or lying on your back?” asks Sergeant Cope. You shake your head. “Well, let’s be blunt. Lieutenant Harrell thinks we need to go after Joffrey. I think we should too. The Lizards aren’t stupid, if they have him captured, they may be trying to interrogate him. See our strength, our numbers, how… desperate we may be.”

“Yes.” Lieutenant Harrell nods, grimly. “Now, I want to send you and keep Burke here.” Burke rolls her eyes. Seems she disagreed but she’s not going to protest right now at least. “I think at this point, just sending you and you only would be the best option. Trading two or more for one person isn’t something I’d feel good about. And we need everyone we can get here in case those Deinos come back or worse.”

“Right.” You nod. “Where’d you last see Joffrey’s trail?”
>>
Burke says, “Around the area where Horner and Bakker were tied up. My theory is that where we found them is where they were ambushed. Trees in that area had some scorch marks from plasma burns and scratches from gun shots. There was a small camp north of that area too where the Lizards have set up.”

“They set up in Q-Bird town?” you ask.

“From what I understand, there are no Q-Birds anymore,” Sergeant Cope says, solemn. “Lizards have forced their way into that territory and the Quetzalcoatlus are probably either dead or been forced away.” That’s a shame, they were a formidable asset. But you suppose nature can only win out against technology for so long. “We believe that Hill 47 may be in their possession too but we don’t know for sure. If it is…” He points to the hill on the map, then to the location of the Starship. “If they get any artillery on that hill, we’ll be in striking distance.”

“One thing at a time, Sergeant.” Sergeant Cope shuts up at Harrell’s request, glaring at him quietly. Lieutenant Harrell says to you, “Now, Corporal. Are you feeling up to it? I won’t force you if you don’t. I can send Burke instead.”

“I’d rather he send me instead. I work better alone,” she says. “You’re still hurt, Boo.”

> “Best to wait for nightfall first then I’ll go. I can move under the cover of darkness.”

“It’s best if I wait for nightfall first, I can move under cover of darkness that way,” you say. “And hopefully if I get Joffrey or his dogtags, I’ll be back by morning.” You have to admit, you’re not looking forward to this at all. But at the same time, N̷̡͚͇͎̭͙̦̭̠̪͒͐̀̈́̈́̐͗̕͠͠ͅO̴͇̭̖̬͈̹̼͉̬͖̯̜̔ ̴̡̡͍̩̖̝͔̺̀̀̏̀̒ͅƠ̵̯͊͑̐̽̀̾̎̓͜N̴̤̻̫̾̂̌͑̊̌̑͛͝ͅE̵̠̳̼͆̍̓͘͝ ̸̞̙̗͎͖̤͈̐̇G̸̡̖͖̪̬̥͙̪͖͇͌̒̽͝E̴̢̛͕̰̩̼̮͈̦͎̹͒̄͛̽̊̏͝͝͠͠ͅͅT̴̠̬̻͕̈́̾̔͋̏͗͛͊̕͝͝S̴͇̥͙̭̖̺̀̈͛̋̈́͘̕ ̶̻͎͕͉͓̟̭̯̫͚̻̾̚ͅĽ̷̥̍̈́̓E̷̛̜̜͈͉̎͛͗͐̐̾̆̑͝͝͠͝F̷̢̢̣̪͖̭͖͕̼͇̎̆̿͜ͅŢ̵̜͇̹͍̱̠̆ ̶̛̹̮̞̝̔̌̔̏B̸̬͆̐̋̑͒̿͊̄͗͠͠Ę̵̨̛̤̮̫͚̰̳͍̯̥̮̏́̾ͅH̵̼̙̻̯̻̫̩͈͈̩̠̓̈́͗̆̇͂̚͝͠͠͝I̵̺̩̻̿́̈N̵̡̡̺͇̟̊͗̑̽̇D̷̪̯̻̣̱̻̰̖̹̄͒̂͌̑͆. Joffrey is as much deserving of a rescue as anyone else in this camp.

Lieutenant Harrell nods. “Alright. I’ll let you rest up then. If I were you, I’d take either the AMP or the DAB, you might need one.” Good advice. “I’m going to go see about converting one of the labs into a barracks for us, get the bedrolls out of Whitney’s lab. Sergeant Cope, with me please.” Sergeant Cope nods. He gives you a sharp glare before leaving behind Harrell. Hmph. Seems someone doesn’t much like you.

Burke sighs, folding her arms. “You know, Boo. Nobody ever said you had to do hero work.”

“And yet here I am, everyone’s expecting me to,” you say back.

“Right.” She rolls her eyes, shaking her eyes. “Listen. If you need me-“

“I’ll be fine by myself,” you say firmly. “Harrell’s right. In case something happens, it’s better to lose one person trying to get another person than two. He’s already made that mistake before. And he’s also right in saying that one of us needs to stay behind. Seems our days of working together might actually be over.”

“Joy. I don’t have to put up with your soft touch anymore then,” she says.

“You know you love it.” She gives you the finger in response. “Serious though.” You step closer to her, whispering to her quietly. “When I’m gone, keep an eye on those two.” The only thing she needs to give you is a nod of the head. It’s an unspoken agreement. If something happens, she’ll be there to quell it. “And listen, I’ll be sure to bring Joff back one way or another. Maybe you two can kiss and make up.”

“I’m not your bottom bitch, I’m not going to kiss random people,” she states firmly. Fair. “I’m going to go back on watch. Try and get some good rest before you go.” She makes a punching motion to your hip. You reflexively step back. “Ah. See.” She points to you. “Still tender I think.” She walks away to the ladder, carrying her DMR underarm. You sigh, rubbing your nose.

Truth be told, she might be a little right.

Wexley hands you a plate with a piece of flank meat. He’s managed to cook the meat using an improvised oven with some wood charcoal, and some elbow grease in one of the labs. Almost everyone is lining up to get a piece of real fresh meat. Yours looks to be about medium rare. Wexley taps one of the pieces currently cooking. “Firm, but with a little give. Yep. Medium rare.”

Godwin says, “What if I want it well-done?”

“Then you can get the hell outta here, tough guy,” says Wexley. Tierney takes her plate next and beams like the sun itself. She quickly goes off to eat it. You eat with your hands, pulling a crumbling strip of tender red meat before biting down. It absolutely melts in your mouth, the flavor is so rich and juicy! You inhale sharply, quickly taking another bite. “Judging by how much you’re eating, you must love it.”

“I do,” you say. You nod to him, smiling. “It’s a fanciful idea you’ve got going here, Wex.” You step closer to him. “Can I ask you a question?” He nods, curious as he hands another plate off to Hood. “You mind showing Tierney how to cook some of these? I think she could learn a little from you.”

“Sure, sure,” says Wexley. He motions to Tierney, who sits down against the wall eating. “Hey, Tierney! C’mere a minute!” Tierney blinks in surprise, before standing up and walking over. “You know how to cook?”

“Um, a little,” says Tierney. “I’ve made instant meals before.”

“Ah, ah, instant meals don’t count as cooking. Lemme show you, girl.” Wexley steps aside then jabs one of the pieces. “Meat isn’t too complicated. Just cook and make sure it’s done well. I like my meat medium rare. Usually we can tell how done a meat is by checking our palm. Now, we pinch our thumb and finger together. Thumb and index is medium rare. Middle is rare.” He pokes the base of his palm to show off to Tierney. Tierney listens closely, watching. “Ring is medium well, pinky is well done. The firmer, the more done it is. Now, safe bet is well done. But I like medium rare because there’s actual flavor in medium rare.”

You smile, watching the two. Seems they’re getting along swimmingly. You keep on chewing for now, trying to eat as much as you can. A full meal and a quick nap should suit you before you go. “Corporal.” You stop, then turn to look at Sergeant Cope at the door. “You got a minute?”
>>
“Sure.” You walk on over to him. He leads you on outside into the hall, where it is just the two of you. Unconsciously, you adjust your belt, bringing your pistol holster up. “Can I help you?”

Sergeant Cope nods, leaning on the wall. “What’s your game here, Corporal?”

“My game, sir?” you ask.

“I consider myself a pretty good reader of people,” he says. “It’s how I managed to make Sergeant. You gotta know how your team works if you want to lead them after all. And you.” He jabs you gently, wagging his finger. “Ever since you brought back the news of our current predicament, seems like more and more people are going to you instead of either to me or to Harrell. Hell. People don’t seem to trust me as much either. All those years of leading them in and out of hell, seems to have been…” He shakes his head, making a throwing motion with his hand. “Wiped away. I mean, hell, even Graves won’t look at me the same way.”

“Were you and Graves close?” you ask.

He shrugs. “We had a fling or two, nothing serious. But she’s a good medic. I trust her with my life. Hell, we get outta here, I’ll entertain the notion of making a wife of her but that’s if we get out of here.” He snorts, grimacing. “She and I haven’t talked though since the news broke.”

You don’t want to bring up what he did to deserve that. So you’ll dance around it. “Well, I suggest that’s a consequence of the fact that I’ve been doing a lot of work around here, Sergeant. Not to say you and Harrell haven’t but-“ He steps up, silencing you quickly. He sizes you up, a very clear look of disdain on his face.

“I’m not stupid, son,” he says. You stand there, silenced. He looks at you, hand on his pistol holster, clearly visible to you. “Listen. I’m sure Harrell made you a Corporal because you’re competent. I agree with that. You’re sharp. But know your place. Harrell and I are in charge. Understood?”

“Sergeant, I understand you and Harrell are in charge. But regaining the men’s confidence in your ability to lead is another matter.” He stares at you, silent. “You shouldn’t worry about what I think. Worry about yourself first and foremost I believe, sir.”

“Hmph.” He takes his hand off of his pistol holster, then says, “Fine, Corporal. Go on then.” He slaps your arm, giving you a bit of a sidelong look. “I’ll wish you the best of luck out there.” With that, he steps back inside. You follow behind him. He gets to the back of the line, as if the conversation had not happened. You give him an inquisitive stare. The way he conducts himself… suspicious. But you suppose you can’t act on them for now. Besides, Sergeant Cope has good reason to keep the chain of command in check. If it collapses, then it’s one gentle push away from mass chaos here in the camp.

Graves pats your arm. “Finish your meal and take a nap, Daddy. I’ll give you a handjob too if you want.”

“Very funny,” you say. She snickers, then goes to finishing her meal. You quickly finish yours too. Much as you want to savor the flavor, meals are fuel not luxury. You swallow up the last of the meat and then grab your Carbine. You step back out of the lab, then head on over to the next lab over. There, Lieutenant Harrell has designated it as the barracks. The lights are off, but you can clearly see the bed rolls have been set up, and the tables themselves been arranged so that each bed roll has their own privacy screen. Smart, you suppose.

You lay down on a bed roll, then shut your eyes.

You didn’t dream again unfortunately. Graves gently kicks at you with her boot. “It’s nightfall, Boo.” You groan, rubbing your nose. Not much sleep infecting your body so you sit up and look up at her. She hands your Carbine then says, “If you want to touch, go ahead. Try me.” She presses her breast with her finger, staring down at you with a tired eye. She pokes her breast. “Heehee! Gimme a baby, Daddy! Haa!”

“Graves.”

“Sorry. Too far.”

“Graves.” You stand up, looking at her with a firm look. “Sometimes I wonder if you’re joking or not.”

“You think I’m joking?” she asks. Uh. Is she not? She snorts, waving it off with a snicker. “Heh. I am. Sometimes.” Sometimes? She turns around. “Come on, I’ll go help you prep your inventory. Given that you’re going to be out there by yourself and you might likely have to carry Joffrey, I’d suggest packing light.” The two of you exit the barracks lab then walk down to the next lab over.

This lab, apparently while you were sleeping, is set up as the armory. All the spare weapons, powerpacks, grenades, and other items have been stashed here. Hood takes count using a pen and notepad. “Mhm, mhm…” He looks over at you. “Corporal. What’s up?”

“I need to put together my equipment,” you say.

He nods. “Alright. Let me see.” You place your Carbine down along with your equipment. A pistol, a machete, your knife, two grenades, your armor, your camo poncho, your IFAK, and your helmet. And that’s about it. “Alright. Now, Burke recommends that you take either our DAB or the AMP Rifle.” He places down both on the table next your equipment. “Harrell also has authorized extra frags, up to five of them, and a spare IFAK as well plus two C-Rations.”

You nod. “Alright.”

You sling the DAB over your shoulder then pack the C-Rations into your satchel along with belting the IFAK next to yours. For the most part, it’s a heavy loadout, but better safe than sorry. Hood nods, patting your arm. “Alright,” you say. “I think I’m good to go.”

“Good luck. You’ll need it,” says Hood. He goes back to organizing what materials are left. Graves grunts, motioning to follow her. You walk behind Graves outside of the armory.

“Listen, if you see Joffrey and he’s beyond saving, don’t bother trying,” Graves says. “Save yourself first over him.”

“That’s pretty brutal,” you say. “Are you sure?” You’re not sure you’re comfortable with the idea of putting someone out of their misery just because they’re too far gone. After all, you saved Nielson from being ripped apart. Took a while to get him back to full strength but you got him back. Joffrey should be no different in your mind.

“I’m just saying, it’s a matter of practicality. Medics have to make that decision a lot too you know,” she says. “Lots of people have to be passed up because they’d spend too much time and resources to keep up.” Once you two are at the door, she stops you. “You got that? > “If I can save him, I’ll save him.”

“If I can save him, I’ll save him, Graves.”

She sighs, folding her arms. “Hm. Well, if you do, be careful.” She makes a jabbing motion at your injured hip. You flinch back. “Ha. Got you.” You glare at her in response. She better not do that again. She holds her hands up, smirking. “Sorry, Daddy. Just checking if you’re still tender there.”

“Right, right.” Truth be told, Graves is making it –extremely- hard for you to remain relatively celibate in a situation like this. But you can’t let sex cloud your thoughts. You need to be all there. Graves pulls the door open for you, then you nod to her. She gives a mocking salute back then heads back inside. You walk past Morrison and Grimshaw who are on watch tonight.

“Good luck, boss,” Morrison says. You nod to him, acknowledging it. Right. It’ll be a bit of a long walk you’d say. You go around the Starship then start heading north. The darkness has already fallen on the day. Nightfall. It should give you some amount of cover hopefully. But you now those Lizards already to be good at sniffing and tracking when they need to be. You adjust the strap on the DAB. Hopefully nothing goes wrong tonight.

Your walk to the river was fairly uneventful. You kept it slow, as not to arouse any predators from their sleep or let any prey get spooked by your movement. Only things you could hear now were the soft calls of birds in the trees. You hunch over, trying to keep a low profile as you walk until finally you reach the river bank. And boy, it was quite something. You knelt down in a bush, then looked through with your scope.

There were faint lights on the other side of the bank in the woods. Using your Infared, you could see clearly they were Lizards. Coming from the east was a caravan of Triceratops, at least six of them, each towing a piece of artillery. That artillery looks tubular, with two heavy wheels. And judging by the sheer diameter of those tubes, they must be heavy mortars. Seems they’re leaving the rockets behind and bringing mortars up instead. The Triceratops were escorted by crews of four Stenos to each one, backed up by a squad of ten Raptor Minors. You look around with your Infared some more. Aside from that one caravan, there were sparse dots of white further in. You can’t tell specifically thanks to all the trees.

But definitely, it looks like the Lizards now own the north bank.

Not our current objective. Plus, I doubt they're without means of detecting us. Best to move ahead and return asap so we can inform the rest of the crew and figure out a plan

Yeah best kill them somewhere farther away, or in a misleading direction.

Unless we can make an "accident" happen where one of their mortars explode in a pile of other mortars......

> Go and follow the caravan, see where they’ll set their position.

You crouch and quietly cross the river, keeping only your head up. The river is fairly calm for now, so you don’t have much trouble as opposed to the last time you got caught in one. Once you make it to the other side, the caravan has come and gone. But they left the big round tracks of their triceratops and the big grooves from their wheeled mortar carriages. You carefully follow along, keeping low into the brush and foliage. You can hear the chirping and crowing cries of the Stenos ahead of you. You recognize this trail actually. It goes straight up to Hill 47. Oh damn it.

You slowly walk up the trail, then crouch. You see a Raptor poke his head up over the crest, searching the sky before going back. You hit the deck then start crawling. You’ll approach from an odd angle, the south east. After a few minutes of crawling and making sure nobody is coming over the crest to look, you finally find a good spot between two rocks and some bushes. You pull yourself into them.

Once you’re up, you look over.

You see Troodon, thirty of them at least from what you can see. You’re quite close, but they don’t seem to have spotted you just yet. The Troodon take shovels and dig dirt into sandbags and create trenchworks all around the edge of the hill. It’s not just those six heavy mortars it seems, this is way more. This is looking to be a veritable fire base. The Raptors watch and wait as the Stenos unhitch the Mortars from their Triceratops then start setting up. They also pull crates of ammo down from the Trike flanks and sides as well.

At the south end, you see a trio of Stenos setting up some kind of sandbag fighting position. At the sandbags, they set up a heavy tripod, then a large multi-barreled weapon. It had eight barrels, with a angled loading magazine being fed into its base. They set up the weapon the tripod, checking for elevation and horizontal sweeping quickly before attaching a… a hand crank to the side? Huh. Weird. They turn the crank, and the barrels start spinning. Must be some kind of heavy machine gun then.

Given how many Troodon, Raptors, and Stenos are in this area, it’s not a wise idea to try and take them all out yourself. You’ll mark it on the map.

The worst part of it is that the Quetzalcoatlus appear to be missing. Seems they really did drive them out. Poor birds.

> Go towards the camp Burke mentioned, due north-east-east there abouts.

You pull back from your little position in the rocks, then start crouch walking back down the hill to the north-east-east direction. It won’t be too far from where Horner and Bakker were found. You feel a tap on your helmet, then look up. Ah goddamn it, is it really going to rain again!? What’s with this swamp and rain!? If you’re going to get Joffrey, you’ll have to get him before the rains come, otherwise the river might become inaccessible to you. You start hurrying yourself along.

The next hour or so is spent skulking through brush and wood. When you started out here, you were doing your best to evade and escape the notice of the Lizards. But now though, you have experience enough to know where to go and how to avoid them. Using your Infrared, you’re spotting them in the trees. The Stenos appear to be operating in pairs, patrolling around but never quite catching sight of you. You stop and watch. A pair of Stenos walk no more than fifty meters away, wielding a sniper rifle and a rifle of their own. One of them sniffs the air, then shakes its head and continues walking. Seems they haven’t quite caught your scent yet.

Once they’re gone, you keep moving along. You have to be getting close now.

Then you hear a loud scream. That sounded like a person. That must’ve been Joffrey! You start getting closer.

You hear him scream again, a blood-curdling cry that makes the hairs on your skin stand on end. You’re approaching that camp Burke told you about. Then you see a faint orange glow through the bushes and the trees. You keep moving closer before you look down. Ponds.

This could work.

You submerge yourself into the pond, leaving only your head up and your rifle up. Slowly you march through the pond, keeping yourself low and hiding in the reeds among the edges. Don’t move too fast. Otherwise something might try and eat you. You step on something. What the-

You blink, then quickly step off. Bubbles rise out of the pond, before the long snout of something rises out of the water. The texture of the head is leathery, yet looked hard as rock. It regards you with black eyes briefly as you freeze. It snorts, making the water break around its nostrils briefly. You can see teeth lining its mouth, razor sharp chompers. Then it simply submerges back into the water, hissing.

Your heart pounds. You know exactly what that was.

> SARCHOSUCHUS
> Xenobiologists consider Acheron to be quite the anomaly as much of its native fauna appears to resemble Earth-like wildlife. The Sarchosuchus is no different, being essentially a gigantic crocodile. Adults notably can reach upwards or greater than ten meters in length and almost the size of a full grown human in height.

> Despite the incredible size of the Sarchosuchus, they are incredible docile. This can be attributed to their incredible size and weight making it difficult for them to move very fast. The infamous death roll of most crocodilians is not something the Sarchosuchus can do. Instead, Sarchosuchus simply wait for prey to come to them, usually large Hadrosaurs so that they can feed effectively on the corpse for upwards of a week before needing another meal. Despite their lumbering size and inability to move quickly on land however, they are very powerful swimmers.

You keep moving along until finally you reach the glow. It’s a camp fire. You hide yourself among the reeds of the pond and take a look for yourself. With the hood over your head and helmet too, your silhouette is masked quite effectively. They won’t see you at first glance.

In the camp itself are a pack of Troodon. Tents and piles of leaves are spread around in a circle around the campfire. But what was most important was Joffrey. He was tied up, stripped down to his pants. His body was covered in fresh cuts and wounds. And his eyes were blindfolded over with two huge bloody stains where his eyes should be. His hands were… his hands were gone. Nothing but bloody stumps. His feet were bare. But not for long.

The Raptor Minor leading the Troodon pack picks up a knife cooking in the fire. The blade is red hot from sitting in the flames. Two Troodon hold down Joffrey as he tries to kick his legs away. “P- Please! Please, stop! Stop!” he cries. The Raptor Minor hisses, then jabs the fiery blade into Joffrey’s feet. He screams, his voice cracking as his loud pained yell pierces the sky. The Minor pulls the knife away, then jabs the foot again. He screams again. You cringe, seeing the steam rising from the blade and the skin sizzling around the edges of it. The Raptor follows up by slashing his left arm with the blade. Joffrey can only scream and sob in pain.

The bastards. You take a closer look at the camp. You have the drop on them from here. There’s at least only ten of them. Ten Troodon and one Raptor Minor? Strange. But you have to get Joffrey out of there and you have to get him out now.

> Start shooting now.

You stand up out of the reeds and fire. The first shot shreds the top half of the Raptor’s head off. The Troodon shriek and call out as you start putting shots into them one by one. A pair of them manage to escape the chaos as you step out of the pond slowly, putting accurate shots into each Lizard one by one. A Troodon here falls, a Troodon there falls, all of them drop. Soon, you’re faced with nine Lizard corpses in the span of about thirty seconds. Joffrey lies there, twitching and shivering in pain and horror. You quickly reload the Carbine with a fresh powerpack, then kneel down beside him. “Joffrey, are you okay?”

“Who- who’s tere?” he asks. “Th- they tore out my eyes, the frakking animals!” he cries.

“Shhh! It’s me, it’s me!” you say, whispering to him. You grab his wrists, and almost his arms slip out from your grip. You forgot he had no hands. You grab his wrists again more firmly, then say, “I’m here to get you out, okay?”

“Oh my God, thank you,” he says. “Thank you, God. Thank you!” He smiles, laughing a little in relief. “Haha! D- Did you get the transmitter? Did you call for help? I thought I was going to be left down here!” That hits you like a ton of bricks. Damn it, you’re going to have to explain it to him too. “D-… did you see where Horner and Bakker went? Are they safe? We got separated!”

“Listen, I’ll explain everything.” You draw your knife then cut his restraints. “But we got to get you out of here first before-“ You hear Troodon cries in the distance. Those two that managed to escape. Damn it! More Troodon respond, followed by Raptor cries and howls. “Damn it, alright. Can you walk?”

He shakes his head. “They just stabbed my frakking feet with a hot iron! I’m lucky that I can frakking talk! They shoved some weird shit down my throat and made me swallow it those sick frakking freaks! Agh, God!”

> You’re going to have to carry him back. Pick him up and get moving as fast as you can.

You grab his arms, then pull him over your back and start booking it to the south. Those Troodon are fast and if they catch you, you’re not sure what you can do one handing a Carbine or only using a pistol. You can do no better than a slow jog with Joffrey on your back. You hear a sharp Troodon cry in the distance, followed by several dozen more. They’ll probably find the camp first, try to get your scent.

And hopefully dear God they will track your scent from the wrong direction. You think back on the first day when they did that and went completely the wrong direction from where you were going. You pant heavily, already feeling the strain of having the DAB and all the extra equipment on your body along with Joffrey too. But you won’t give up. Not when you have a chance at saving him. At this point it’s like telling your legs “hey we gotta go, we gotta get out of here.”

“Agh, son of a bitch!” Joffrey groans from the pain of both being carried and his injuries. Truth be told, he looks pretty cut up. You can’t imagine what the Deinos were doing to him before you showed up. “I can’t believe they did this to me, those savages!”

“You’re going to be fine, Joffrey, just hang in there for me,” you say quickly. As if to prove you wrong, a shot whizzes by your arm. You feel the hot sensation of blood start running down. Shit! You yelp, trying to sprint forward with him. “Sniper! Shit!” You turn around and look with your Infrared. One of those Steno patrols found you! They’re far, can’t be more than two hundred meters away. But goddamn it! Another shot bursts at your feet. You keep sprinting, sweat running down your cheeks, arms, and legs as you break through the puddle, brush, and twigs as you make a break for the river until finally you make it.
>>
You make it to the river. Another shot breaks nearby, smashing a rock. The river looks calm enough! You start wading across. The water comes up nearly to your knees as you try to run for it. But with Joffrey on your back, you can’t do a lot of lifting with your legs here. More Stenos break out of the woods and fire upon you. Their shots go wide, scattering against the water, rocks, and mud as you run for it. Man, those Stenos are actually quite bad shots! You don’t think you’ve been squarely hit by them once!

Then a shot slams into your back. “Ah!” You almost fall over. Your backplate caught it! It didn't penetrate, thank God! But son of a bitch! Your back! Joffrey screams, almost slipping off of your shoulders as you fall to your knees. The water cuts around your waist and hips as you try to push yourself back up. Come on! Come on!

“Oh God, we’re going to die!” screams Joffrey. The Stenos continue firing. But it seems that one hit to your back was a complete fluke! Bastards!

But goddamn, your back! That injury from before that you were pushing through is back with a vengeance! You should’ve taken the frakking massage when you could, goddamn it!

> Turn around and return fire.

You grab a grenade off of your belt then pull the pin and release the spoon. You turn and toss it straight at them sidearm style. The grenade flies over and lands in the mud, bouncing a bit before exploding. The Stenos nearby get sprayed with shrapnel and fragments and quickly retreat back into the woods. The Troodon arrive shortly after, but they stop at the water and shout and scream at you as you force yourself to get back up and start running for cover. The Raptor Minor leading them comes up then howls as well, up into the sky as you make a break for the riverbank. Finally, water transitions to mud as you hurry into the woods.

Seems they gave up the pursuit rather easily. Maybe they don’t want to cross the river lest they incur the wrath of the locals. Or maybe they have bigger plans than just killing the two of you when they see you. You sigh, shaking your head. “You okay, Joff?”

“Y-… Yeah.” Good. He wasn’t killed by a stray shot or something but… You stop and flex your back. It feels like your spine got bruised or something! You never were one for the medical arts. Now the only thing really holding you back are the Deinos.

You hear gunfire to the south, way off in the distance. You hear Deino howls and more Raptor cries. Hmph. Maybe you won’t have to worry about that. Then behind you, you hear the scream of a Rex. It sounds all through the trees. Even though you can’t see it, even though you know it’s not there nearby, it’s as if it’s right on your tail right now. Seems there’s a Rex to the north. That’s lovely. You shake your head, sighing. A relief you suppose. Seems everyone is too occupied to worry about you for now. “I think we should be good to walk the rest of the way, Joffrey.”

“You think so?” he asks. “I-… you don’t happen to have any pain-stop in your IFAK do you?” You nod. You take out some from the extra IFAK, a single shot. You jab it into his arm. “Aaaahh… that hits the spot.” You place the used needle back into the bag and get walking. “Goddamn. So-… so when we getting evac’d?”

I think it's about time we discuss this now.

The rules of war have changed. In the jungles of this planet, we are no longer the Americans with our superior air support and unrelenting force of arms. We are driven to a scattered few, with limited supplies, constantly chased and harrassed. We are more like the Vietcong now, even though in reality we are even worse off then they are. Looking at the resources at our disposal I say it is time to completely change our entire conduct of war and change it NOW. This is a war of attrition, of guerilla warfare. Our only hope at this rate is to fight off the Lizards to the point where they don't want to fuck with us no more. No longer should Burke and us be the only Scouts anymore. EVERYONE is going to need "scouting" skills to conduct any form of guerilla operation like ambushing or recon. We travel lighter next time. Hit and run. Set traps. Assassinate high profile targets. Strike fear into the heart of the enemy and don't ever let up until they pack their bags and fucking leave.

- Create means of communication between us and whereever our HQ is at the time. Perhaps one of our engineers can create a radio for us or something.
- sabotage and eliminate artillery position in Hill 47
- Kill that T-rex
- Scout a fall back position in case we got to bail from our current shelter
- Learn the local fauna to prepare for the inevitability that our C-Rations run out
>>
>>3115953
I'd add

-Create some sort of truce with the dino village
-Get rid of any tension in the group
-Create a radio capable of sending out pulses to the fleet in orbit

> “Just get some rest. I’ll explain once we get back.”

“Just get some rest, alright?” you say. “I’ll explain once we get back.” You don’t want to hold conversation in the middle of the night after having just evaded the Lizards. Not to mention the news itself is actually quite sad in itself. He might do something stupid that’ll give your position away. The rain starts coming down a little harder as you start walking.

If there’s anything you have to say though, something doesn’t quite add up. They had you if they really wanted you. Those Troodon easily could’ve easily ran across the river and mauled the two of you if they really wanted to. Seems the Lizards don’t think it’s worth it to cross the river but even then… Those Stenos at least could’ve come back to take potshots. Now, as far as you can see, the Stenos themselves aren’t all particularly good shots. Hell, they even managed to get a good shot on your back. But throughout all that, Joffrey’s rescue was much easier than you thought it’d be.

At the least, you managed to find their new firebase at Hill 47 and confirm that the Q-Birds are gone. A shame really. Not to mention that with those mortars up, once they find the location of the base, it’ll be barrage central until you silence them or steal them. Hell, some things are universal, you could probably steal at least some of those weapons if you needed to.

Regardless, you make the long trek back. It’s an uneventful one, but it’s a very difficult one thanks to your new aggravated back injury. You hoped you’d get to be older before you started having back problems but here it is.

“Who goes there!?” yells Morrison.

“It’s me!” you shout. You hold your hand up. Morrison and Grimshaw look at you in surprise. “Don’t shoot! I got Joffrey! Get Tombs and Graves, quick! He’s wounded!” Morrison and Grimshaw help Joffrey off your back, allowing your spine to finally be free of the weight. You drop the DAB off of your back too and hold it under your arm as well as you walk with them.
>>
“Jesus Christ, what did they do to him!?” asks Morrison, looking at Joffrey’s hands.

“They cut off my frakking hands!” screams Joffrey.

“Quiet, quiet, the locals might be about,” Grimshaw says quickly. “Come on, inside.” You look up at the watch platform on top of the ship and see Burke. She gives a thumbs up, nodding. You give a thumbs up back. The four of you get inside and quickly hurry Joffrey to the lab set aside for medical purposes. They open the door and find Tombs and Graves talking idly. “Graves!”

Graves looks at Joffrey, her eyes widen. “Holy shit!” Tombs rushes over, then helps Joffrey to one of the makeshift beds set up on a table. Nothing more than just one of the beds scavenged from the Command truck. “What the hell happened to him!?”

You say, “A lot of things. Can you fix him up?”

“I mean. Sure but… holy shit!” Graves looks at you with insane surprise on her face. “I didn’t think you’d actually bring him back in this state!”

“I had to,” you say. “He was being tortured. Right at that camp Burke found. There’s a lot more shit across that river too. I think they’re setting up a mortar battery. They might be aiming to hit us with artillery.”

“Do they even know where we are?” asks Morrison.

“I don’t know,” you say. Tombs quickly starts spreading medigel on Joffrey’s wounds, then injects a shot of Inst-Aid. “But we’re in a bit of a bind here.” Morrison and Grimshaw stand next to each other, looking quite nervous at the prospect of artillery being called in. You know the implications too. If they bring artillery to bear, that could be the end of things. “And-…” You yelp, quickly putting your hand on your back. “Listen, I-“

“Are you frakking wounded too!?” Graves shouts, surprise now replaced by clear frustration.

> “Okay, I might’ve got shot, but non-lethally.”
> “No. I’m fine. Stay away.”
> “Don’t worry about it. I just need to see Cope and Harrell and debrief them real quick.”

“Graves.” You pat her arm. “Check on Joffrey.” Graves nearly starts to yell out a protest, but you very firmly and sternly say, “Now.” She stops, then turns to look at him. “Morrison, you and Grimshaw get back out there.”

He nods. “Alright.” Morrison quickly pats Joffrey’s arm, making him flinch. “Stay strong, buddy. You’re safe now.” Joffrey nods, taking a deep breath as Tombs takes out his medical scanner. The two of them leave. Good. Now it’s time to figure out if your gut feeling is true or not.

Tombs runs the scanner down Joffrey’s head all the way down to his stomach. You note all the wounds, all the burns, all the bruised and fractures he has. No wonder he was in so much pain. And that’s just his top half. Graves gets his legs. Aside from his completely scorched feet, there’s another fracture in his left leg. Not to mention when Tombs’ scanner goes off. He steps back, then opens a screen to provide an X-Ray of his stomach. You and Graves look at it.

Inside Joffrey’s stomach was a box, with an extended antennae. The antennae extends sideways, poking into Joffrey’s stomach lining while the box itself almost touches the other end of his stomach. “What in the hell is that?” asks Tombs.

Graves blinks. “… that. Is a frakking tracking device.”

“Wh- what!?” Joffrey nearly sits up but Tombs shoves him back down. “Wh- what are you talking about!? Tracking device!?”

“They made you swallow something, right?” you ask.

He nods. “Y-… yeah but, it wasn’t anything big!”

“Anything big, that antennae is the big issue,” Graves says. “If that thing is extended, he can’t regurgitate it.” Frakking hell. That means… “Only way we can get that thing out is with an AutoDoc. And we don’t have one! We left our working one back at Devil’s Den and the only one nearby is probably in that Medevac but it’s in Deino country!”

“Bigger issue here,” Tombs says. The two of you look at him. “How long has he been here?”
>>
“Maybe two minutes,” says Graves. She sighs, rubbing her nose. “Augh!” She slams her fist on the table, making Joffrey flinch. “Frak! Frakking, frak!” She kicks the table, gnashing her teeth angrily. “You realize what this means, right!? They’re using Joffrey as a frakking Judas goat! Shove a tracker on him! We-…. We fell right into their frakking game! They know we don’t like leaving people to die!” That would explain the torture scene in the open. They must have known or at least suspected that someone would come looking for Joffrey. Those sick fiends are preying on the goodness of the human condition. And given that Horner and Bakker were killed, they knew they only needed one person to get this done.

Tombs sighs, placing his hands on the table. "We can't push the antennae down obviously. It might rupture his stomach lining. And that will definitely kill him. I'm not sure what we can do for him."

Graves steps up to you. “We have to help him, somehow. This isn’t his fault. But we can’t let him stay here either with that tracker inside of him! The longer he’s here, the more the Lizards are going to suspect this is our camp and not just some stopover you’re staying at!”

“Wh- wait, don’t I get a say in this?” asks Joffrey. “C-… Can’t you just cut it out of me!?”

“I’m sorry, do I look like a trained surgeon to you!?” Graves shouts at Joffrey. “My job as a medic is not to save your life, Joffrey, it’s to make your death less painful!”

“Maggie.” Graves looks at Tombs, panting heavily, clear impotent anger in her eyes. Tombs however doesn’t appear moved. He seems more accepting of the situation than she is. Graves blinks, then she relents. “Please.”

“Sorry.” Graves fold her arms, taking a deep breath.

> “I’ll take him outside and find some place for him to stay.”

Oh fuck, this ain't good. Pretty sure if we cut it out of him he'll die, we have nowhere else to take him and if we leave him here to go hunt down the AutoDoc that might not even be able to be fixed, the lizards will get a lock on our base and bombard it into a crater.

There is no winning here.

“Alright, listen.” Graves, Tombs, and Joffrey look at you, listening closely. “First thing’s first, we gotta cut it out of him. We gotta get the AutoDoc in the wreck. Nielson can fix it up, I’m sure of it.” You take a breath, thinking on it. “Now, we’ll take the Command truck, we bring Nielson with us to the Medevac wreck.” You snap your fingers, pointing to Tombs. “Load Joffrey in. Me and Graves are going to get Nielson.”

“What about you, asshole!?” asks Graves.

“I’ll be fine for a little bit, we can worry about me when we’re sure we’re not going to get struck by a heavy mortar barrage.” You all get moving. Tombs quickly picks Joffrey up and starts carrying him to the Command truck. You and Graves hurry down to the barracks lab. “Nielson in the barracks?”

“Yeah, sleeping, most of them are. Turns out that pachy meat is actually kind of like turkey. Really puts you to sleep if you eat a lot of it,” she says. “They ate all the tail meat.” Disappointing but understandable. You open the barracks lab and turn the lights on. “Wake up, wake up! Daddy’s bringing your coffee!” Everyone inside groans, frustrated at having their sleep being interrupted. “Nielson!”

Nielson sits up in his bed roll, looking at you two. “Yeah?”

“Need you,” you say. “Get your shit quick.” Nielson nods, hurrying out to grab his rifle and pull his armor on. Tierney too sits up, wondering what’s going on.

“What’s going on?” asks Hood as he rubs his eyes.

“Nothing to worry about,” you say. “Just we found Joffrey. But now we have to look for an AutoDoc to fix him up considering the circumstances. It’s really nothing to panic about.” Don’t mention the tracking device, don’t mention the tracking device. Nielson runs outside, having readied up in a hot minute. “Alright, come on.” He walks with you and Graves. “Okay. Just so you know, it is time to panic. We found a tracking device inside of Joffrey and he might be fixing to bring down a mortar barrage on this position if we don’t move him.” Nielson looks at you, looking like he’s going to panic. “That’s why we need you.”

Nielson nods slowly. “Hell of a thing to wake up to. But okay.”

Good boy.

You help secure Joffrey to one of the beds. “Alright,” you say. “Just stay there, Joffrey.” He nods, not particularly able to do much else given he has no hands and his feet are charred messes. The mission now was to retrieve and hopefully salvage a working AutoDoc from Whitney’s Medevac boat. Given the fact that he has a tracker inside of his stomach and that there’s no other way to get it out –and- the Lizards have artillery being set up to possibly shell the location that the tracker stops at, you can’t exactly just leave him for dead.

Graves steps into the back then says, “Get in the cab with Nielson, you need to guide him.” Fair enough. Graves holds onto a bracing bar on the ceiling as she stands next to Joffrey. You quickly jump out of the back door then up to the driver’s cab. Nielson has already fired up the engine. Morrison hangs off the side of his door.

“You be careful out there, boy,” says Morrison. “Those Lizards could be anywhere.”

“I mean, I didn’t get woken up just to get –shot-, Morrison!” Nielson shouts. “Just saying!” Morrison snickers, slapping Nielson’s helmet before letting go and dropping off. You open your door and sit in the side cabin with Nielson he nods to you. “You ready, boss?”

“Yeah.” You set your Carbine between your legs then say, “Let’s get-“

“Wait!” You blink, then lean out the window. Hood tries to stop Tierney from getting out the door, but Tierney simply shoves him down and runs up to you all. “Wait! I’m coming with you, damn it!” Oh. Tierney runs up, having pulled her exoharness on. She lugs the Plasma Cannon in her arms. She’s managed to get combat ready pretty fast it seems. “You’re not going anywhere without me!” Hood pulls himself up, dusting himself down, indignant at having been pushed aside like that.

“Tierney,” you say. “This is a dangerous op. Joffrey has a tracker inside of him. We could get shelled by mortars or worse. We might run into Deinos out there. Or more Lizards too.”

“I don’t care!” Tierney yells, gritting her teeth. “You promised! Give me this one chance! I know I can help you!”

Graves pulls open the slot, looking at you with wide eyes and a very curious expression. “Wow. It’s almost as if you shouldn’t be –randomly promising things to people-, Daddy.” You were seriously hoping for a less important mission to take Tierney out on, goddamn it. You look at Tierney again. She stands there, pleading with her eyes to take her with you. Do you really trust her now of all the times?

Every bit of you wants to say no, but you suppose some extra manpower will at least come in handy. “Alright, fine. Get in the back.” Tierney grins, then she quickly hurries herself to the rear. She climbs aboard and sits by the door, resting the cannon down to act as a rear turret. “Nielson, get us going. I’ll guide you. Try and make it quick.”

“You got it, boss.” Nielson puts the Command truck into gear, then starts it off westbound towards the sea. Graves shuts the slot, going back into the back. You sigh, rubbing your nose in frustration. You don’t want to have to deal with the fact that Tierney may fail you again and in such an important position too. This isn’t trying to explore the underground of the ship or doing something on patrol. This is trying to get a tracker out of Joffrey and hoping that a mortar barrage won’t hit you all and possibly kill you. Nielson squints, looking forward at what little path he has. Only the high beams were his helpful guides here, but even through the rain, things looked a little muggy through the windshield.

Hopefully by the time you get to the beach, that Medevac won’t be too flooded.

It was an uneventful drive through the woods. You managed to finally breach the treeline and make it to the shore. After a very worrying crest over the shingle, Nielson drives the Command truck down to the beached Medevac. It was still partially buried in the sands. But most importantly, and thank God for this, it was low tide. That meant the Medevac wasn’t at risk at being drowned. The rain has mostly stopped too. You lean out the window and take a look with your Infrared. Nothing on the Medevac. Seems the Deinos aren’t fishing there for now. Looks like you got some time.

Nielson stops the truck in front of the Medevac. You all get out and quickly assess the situation. Graves says, “Okay, you expect us to dig that frakking thing out?”

“It’ll take us hours to get through that!” says Nielson.

Tierney points to the winch in the Command truck’s front grille. “Maybe we can tow the wreckage up?” You look at Nielson. Can we?

Nielson sighs, thinking on it. “I’m not sure. This sand’s wet. We don’t have a lot of traction and the woods are waaay the hell back there!” Okay, this is quite the problem. The longer you stay here, the bigger the chance that you’re going to get shelled. You have to make a decision. “Maybe if we wait for high tide, the water will knock the sand loose and the Medevac will come out easier.”

“We can’t just wait for high tide! That could take all night!” Graves yells.

You grab the winch then say, “Nielson, once we’re attached, put her in reverse and pull her out.” Nielson nods, heading back to the truck. “Graves, you keep watch. Tierney, grab some shovels.” Tierney quickly runs back as well while Graves grabs her rifles and moves to keep an eye out to the south. You pull the winch and cable and hurry over to the Medevac. Finding an anchor point isn’t too hard, you manage to pull the hook in and wrap it around a support strut right above the cargo bay door. Hopefully the sand and water hasn’t corroded the metal. Tierney comes back and quickly tosses you a shovel. You start digging around the sides, Tierney takes one side and you take the other.

The Command truck starts backing up, slowly, until the metal cable keeping it attached to the Medevac goes taut. The Command truck starts working back, its tires trying to find traction as it tries to wrest the Medevac free from the sandy tomb. You and Tierney work hard and fast to free up pockets of sand wrapped around something important or something keeping the Medevac binded to the ground.

And soon, your efforts are rewarded. The Medevac shudders as it slowly starts to come free. The sand around the Medevac collapses, making Tierney flinch back in response. You step back, watching it go, before it stops. Barely got a meter before it gets stuck again. Shit. The Command truck starts floundering. Nielson starts working the truck side to side, swerving around to keep it from getting dug into the wet sand. Alright. Maybe around the wings. You and Tierney start digging again, hurrying to get the wings out. “Tierney!” you shout. You just had a thought. Tierney comes over. “Push! Push it!” Tierney nods then hurries to the cockpit. With her exoharness, she takes hold then starts shoving forward. The Medevac again creaks as it starts to get clawed away from its resting spot once more. Yes!

“It’s working!” Tierney screams. Nielson straightens the truck out, getting the cable tight once more before again pulling the Medevac out again a few more meters. This time it appears the Medevac is now high enough that you can drop the cargo doors. Yes! You pump your fist, hyped up now. Awesome!

“Uh, Daddy!” You stop, then look at Graves. You run on over to her as she points south. You grab your binoculars and take a look. Spots of light down south. “Let me guess, Deinos.”
>>
>>3122464
“Probably,” you say. “They’re not here yet. We gotta keep digging.” Graves nods. “A little more, Nielson!” you shout. Nielson gives a thumbs up, then puts more power into reversing the Medevac out. Just a little more. The Medevac is dragged out, sand collapsing out of a hole in the cargo bay and out of a hole in the wing. “Okay, stop right there!” Nielson stops, keeping the high beams on the cargo bay doors.

You wrench the shovel blade into the door, then try to force it down. Come on. Tierney runs over then grabs on. She pulls, and the door rends downwards. Oh. Okay. It collapses completely, falling down into the sand. You nod to her. She nods back, panting heavily, probably tired by now. But right before you was…

Lots and lots of sand inside the cargo bay. Great. More digging. You and Tierney hurry and start digging the sand out. Maybe if you get Nielson to tow it forward to try and dislodge some of this? You feel the sand. No, too wet. It won’t go.

“Daddy!” Graves shouts to you. “Deinos coming!” You stop, then take a look south. “About two kilometers down the beach!”

Sure enough, there’s quite a few Deinos coming. At least a dozen. You can’t tell what their markings are either in the darkness as well. They could be Red’s group, they could be Toothy’s blackfaces. Shit.

You pat Graves back. “Keep working, I’ll try and talk things out with them.”

“Hell no! I’m staying behind you, jackass!” You sigh. Fine. You guess you can’t stop –every- woman in your life right now from disobeying your orders. You walk out south, then turn around. Tierney watches. You quickly motion for her to continue. After a few seconds of hesitating, she gets back to shoveling. Nielson too jumps out and moves to help her out as well. Graves walks behind you meanwhile, keeping her rifle up.

The Deinos run down the beach, their figures and faces darkened by the night. You hold your arms out, slinging your Carbine. It takes a long while for them to close in, either because of how far they are or because of the anticipation you’re not sure. But once they do, you can hear them growling and hissing. They skid to a stop, baring their teeth, staring at you. Their group starts coming around the sides, ostensibly to flank you and Graves. An instinct to surround it seems. Graves steps back, keeping her eyes on the Deinos trying to come around the sides. They hiss and snarl at her. One of them snaps their teeth, clicking its tongue to get her attention. “Daddy… are they friend or foe?”

One of them steps up closely, snarling. It’s not black paint on their snouts. It’s yellow stripes across their snouts. It growls at you, apparently not intent on attacking but certainly not appreciating you on what you assume to be one of their prime fishing spots. You hold out your arms, trying to keep them back. One of them snaps at your hand. You flinch, pulling back. It cackles, crowing as it steps back. Damn it.

Then the one directly in front of you, you assume it to be the leader, caws at you. You look at him. It balls its claws into a fist, then makes an eating gesture with its mouth before pointing down at the ground. It drags its toe claws against the ground, before snapping its teeth together. Oh.

You squint. He’s asking for tribute you think. Well. You didn’t bring any of that Pachy meat unfortunately. You do have some C-Rations.

> Break out a C-Ration.

You decide to break out a C-Ration. You pop open one then show off the insides. Oh. It’s meat lover’s pizza. You take it out then take a bite, patting your belly as well. The Deinos stare, clearly confused. You offer it to the Leader. The Leader sniffs at it, then recoils slightly. Doesn’t like the smell, or probably lack thereof. It needs to be cooked after all. It sniffs again, then nibbles on it lightly before biting the whole thing out of your hand. It chews, blinking a few times before swallowing. The others look at the leader, curious. The Leader snorts, flaring its nostrils as it licks its teeth. Then it looks at the rest of the C-Ration. You pull out other treats inside of it. Preserved apple slices, a chocolate bar, and that’s just the lunch portion.

You offer the apple slices. The Leader bites into them and licks its teeth. It sniffs at your hand, almost shoving its snout right into your palm before you gently bat him away. The Leader growls. Okay. He's got a taste for C-Rations now. That's fine, sure. You don't have many. And obviously there's way more than you'd like here. Maybe you can try and communicate that you do have more but you don't have them.

Graves tilts her head. "Are you really just feeding them our only non-native food?" she asks.

"Hey, they're curious," you respond. "Besides-"

You hear some cracks in the distance. Then they look up at the sky. Eh? They immediately bolt back south, sprinting away. “Where are they going?” asks Graves. You turn around and see several electric blue streaks rising up out of the north horizon before vanishing into the sky, their trails fading away after a second or two. What the hell? Tierney and Nielson saw it too, wondering what the hell that was.

Then you hear a whistling noise above you.

Oh.

oh dear wooden splinters are so painful, better take metal shrapnel instead.

Trees provide some cover and broken up ground for us to take refuge in, digging a hole in the open riverside while mortars are coming down means we take hot shards all around us while still digging a hole.

Plus they can take some of the hits preventing the mortars from reaching us at ground level.

The only other thing that might work is try to take cover in the downed ship.
>>
>>3123568
The trees would block most of the shrapnel, but create much more debris

and at the speed that these splinters are moving, they might as well be metal shrapnel instead, and there would be more of it
>>
>>3123596
They lack the mass or hardness to maintain the energy or lethality. Plus our armour and clothes can block wood splinters better than metal splinters.

> Into the truck!

“Run!” You point to the truck. You and Graves start sprinting for the truck. The whistling of the mortar shells gets louder and louder. Tierney and Nielson get the same idea and run for the truck as well, dropping their shovels.

Then a mortar strikes the sand, splashing wet sand all over the place. It didn’t hit nearby thankfully. Then another hits, splashing into the water. Nielson pulls the door open and dives in to get the truck into gear. Tierney grabs onto the side then climbs into the passenger seat. Nielson turns the truck around to face the rear towards you two. “Get in, get in!” you shout. Graves runs ahead and dives straight in. Just as another mortar explodes overhead, spraying the beach with shrapnel and metal. You jump in, landing on your hip. You yell out from the impact, holding your side before getting onto your chest and pushing yourself back up. Nielson starts driving the truck away into the trees. “Careful, careful!”

Graves holds onto one of the command consoles. “Son of a bi-“ A burst, then suddenly shrapnel flies through the back, sending sparks and metal shards all over the place. “Ah! Frakking, frak!” Graves falls to the floor, holding her arm. “Son of a-“

“Graves!” You pat yourself down, then look down. Huh, you’re not hit. You look at Joffrey, who quietly curls up, trying not to get hit either. “Graves, are you okay!?”

“Yeah, my arm just suddenly likes getting shrapnel inside of it! Turns out I have magnetic bones, you frakking retard! I’m not okay!” she screams. Well. Okay. She didn’t have to put it like that. “Ah! Son of a- ah!” Graves rolls over onto her side, holding her right arm. You crawl on up and take a look at it. She holds her hand up to show it to you. There’s a jagged piece of hot metal in her forearm. Blood seeps around the edges. “Okay, listen, I need you to pull this thing out.” Another explosion, making the truck shake. She freezes, sitting down against the console. You kneel down and hold her arm. “Just pull it out!”

“Okay, okay!” you say. You grab the metal. “Ready?” She nods. “Okay. I’m going to do it on three.” She nods again, gritting her teeth. “One.” She takes a breath. “Two.” You ready your fingers. This is going to hurt for her. “Three.” You rip the metal out, sending blood into your face. Blood shoots out of the wound and spills out all over her forearm.
>>
>>3125190
She shrieks, whimpering as she presses her good hand down onto her bleeding forearm. “Son of a… ah!” She lies on the floor, trying to reach for her IFAK. “Ah! God…” Her hand shakes, trying to reach for a jar of Medigel. “Don’t just sit there! Help me, goddamn it!” You reach for the Medigel in her IFAK.

Then you all get thrown to the front. Everything suddenly goes slanted as you all fall to the front of the bed. “Ah! What the hell is going on!?” yells Joffrey. The lights inside the back flicker as Graves lies beneath you. Not in a compromising position either. You just genuinely crushed her with your back. She groans in pain.

Nielson opens the slot in the cab. “Sorry, guys! I just drove into a frakking shell crater!” An explosion shakes the Command truck.

“We're going to get shredded in here! I'm getting into the crater!" screams Tierney.

"Tierney!" Nielson calls after her, too late to stop her from getting out and hiding inside the shell crater.

> “We have to get the truck out! We gotta push it out!”

“We have to get the truck out, Nielson! Come on!” You grab Graves’ good arm and help her up. Graves yells out in pain before falling onto one of the consoles. She grabs the Medigel jar and quickly uncaps it to start spreading it on her wound. You help her out of the Command truck then hurry down into the shell crater. This massive shell crater had to have been at least two meters deep and ten meters wide! What kind of explosive made this!? You could stand up in this crater and not expose yourself!

You and Graves come around to the front and find Nielson trying to push the truck out. Unfortunately for you, it seems the truck’s front two wheels and back wheels have managed to actually crest over the edge of the crater. And the grille was actually jutting into the ground as well. “Not sure if we can push this thing out, boss!” yells Nielson. Tierney comes out of hiding then tries to push it. It rocks back before coming back down on them.

“Get back in and put her in reverse!” you say. Nielson nods, hurrying back into the cab. You and Tierney press against the front then start pushing. The wheels rip through the sands, spraying dust and wet sand into the air as you two try to get the Command truck dislodged. The back wheels come back over the crest, but the front is still too heavy. “Push, come on!”

“I’m trying!” screams Tierney. Another Mortar explodes overhead. You all duck. Shrapnel and fragments bounce and skip all around you. Seems the Lizards have figured out airburst rounds are actually pretty deadly! You both get back and hurry to try and push the truck out. “Once more!” You ready yourself, then shove yourself against the bumper. Tierney pushes forward, straining her arms and back. The truck slowly creaks backwards, the engine roaring like a wounded animal as you both try to shove back out of the shell crater.

Finally, it goes. The frontmost rear tires crest over, and coming with it the rest of the truck. You and Tierney almost fall over from it suddenly departing faster than you thought. But it stops up, allowing you to take it in. You got it out! Ha! You grin, Tierney grins too. You hold up your hand. She slaps it, laughing a little.

Then you realize something. You look up and around at the night sky.

The mortars have stopped. That was a pretty short barrage all things considered.

Graves pulls herself out of the shell crater, holding her bleeding arm. “Yeah, the stars are pretty frakking beautiful tonight. Just like my eyes.” You look at her. She looks at you with a very bright smile, until it suddenly transitions into a very vicious glare. “… so are we going to get the AutoDoc or what!?” she screams. Okay! Jesus.

“We better dig it out before the next barrage,” you say. You, Tierney, and Nielson quickly run over to the Medevac. Thankfully it’s unharmed from the mortar barrage, aside from being covered in a thin layer of some knocked up sand. You grab the shovels and quickly start digging the sand out of the cargo bay. Sort of like excavating bones now that you think about it. But there’s no time to joke or chat about it right now. Every second counts. Either they’re going to reload and fire again or they’re going to send a clean up crew to mop up what’s left. The three of you dig voraciously, digging sand out of the bay and slowly revealing crates of materials.

Graves has already fixed up her forearm. But considering her attitude and her very twitchy disposition, she’s probably still in pain. She takes one of the crates and pulls it open. Seawater spills out of it, but she quickly grabs several bags of U Blood along with shots of InstAid and jars of Medigel, shoving them into her satchel. Good thinking.

Then Tierney hits something. She quickly sweeps the sand away, then pulls. Out comes the AutoDoc, a humanoid looking robot that’s in surprisingly good condition. Nielson kneels down beside it and opens up its chest panel to take a look at the innards. “… okay, we can work with this.” Yes! “But most of its internal systems are in bad shape.”

“Fixable?” you ask.

“Yeah.” He looks at you, shrugging. “I can work with this, boss. But, listen. If we can get the other AutoDoc…”

“We can’t stay here for the second,” says Graves. “Let’s just grab it, pull the tracker out of Joffrey, then go.” You look at Nielson.

He nods. “I’ll do what I can. But the spare parts in the second would come in handy.”

> “Let’s get the second AutoDoc out then we can go.”

“Tierney, come here.” Tierney steps up to you, ready. “Tierney, listen to me. I need you to take the truck with Joffrey and drive him around. Don’t go south, that’s Deino territory. Go back into the woods, drive around a little bit. Then come back here in fifteen minutes. Nielson and Graves and I are going to stay here and we’re going to get the other AutoDoc out, understand?” Tierney blinks, surprised. But she nods, understanding. “Now, you be back here in fifteen minutes. You’re not just going to drive back to the base. You’re going to drive around, then you come back here.”

“I got it,” she says, firm. “Don’t worry.”

“Alright.” You smile, patting her arm. “Get going.” She salutes, then quickly runs off to the truck. She gets in, then refuses the truck back away from the shell craters.

“Alright, Nielson.” You point to him. “Hurry and get the AutoDoc working. Graves, I know your arm’s frakked but I need you digging.”

“So this is how you treat your wounded, I’d love to see how you treat me in bed,” Graves mutters.

“Graves! Seriously. Shovel. Dig!” you say. Graves rolls her eye, then picks up a shovel and starts digging gingerly. You shovel more sand out of the cargo, searching desperately for that other AutoDoc. The two of you alone make quite a bit of a dent into the cargo bay of the Medevac as Nielson works on resetting wires, clearing and dusting out ports, and trying to get the AutoDoc working. You have to hurry, before either another barrage or a clean up crew arrives! Neither are desirable given your current state!

Then your shovel strikes something. You quickly shovel the sand away, revealing the head of another AutoDoc! Yes! Lucky! “Graves, here!” Graves steps over then helps you dig the AutoDoc out of the sand. This one looks fairly intact as well. Thank God! “Nielson, we found it!”

“Really!? Thank God!” Nielson grins, looking at you. He turns around, then blinks, looking at the sky. You look too. Several more blue streaks shooting up. Mortars! “Hit the dirt!” Nielson grabs the AutoDoc and hides himself in the piles of sand you put out next to the Medevac. You grab Graves and shove him down into the pile, then you dive on top of her.

“Ow! Daddy- what the- my arm!” You press yourself down on top of her, covering her with your body. You press your chest against her back, your arms around her head as you wait. A shell strikes overhead, exploding and sending shrapnel into the sand. Another airburst. “Son of-…” Graves mutters as she tries to wrest her wounded arm free. “I got frakking sand on my arm, dickhead! God!”
>>
“Sorry,” you say. Another mortar explodes overhead. You hear metallic clanging and dings as shrapnel bounces off the Medevac and lands in the sand around you.

“You know, this is actually pretty romantic, Daddy,” Graves says, her cheek pressed against the sand, her tone of voice clearly exhausted and very not joking at all -- at least surface level. “I’ve always wondered what it’s like getting prone-boned at the beach while mortar shells explode around us. It’s actually frakking exciting all things considered.” You press your helmet against hers. Oh God, please shut up. Another mortar shell strikes, sending sand spilling all over the two of you. “Shit, motherfrakking…”

“Another short barrage,” you say. You sigh in relief. “Thank God.”

“You can get off of me now, Daddy,” Graves says. You sit up then get off of her. Graves sits up too, dusting herself off lightly as she starts slapping sand off of her medigel’d wound. You shake your head, then take a look up north. You pull out your binoculars. “Nielson, you up?”

“Yeah!” he says. “I’m okay!” Thank goodness. You squint, looking with your binoculars to the north.

Advancing down the beach in slow order are definitely Lizards. Raptors, with a pack of Troodon behind them. Must be at least thirty or more of them with five Raptors leading them. They’re about five or six kilometers up the beach so you have some time before they arrive.

Oh fuck, there's that cleanup crew.

> Build some basic fortifications and get ready to defend yourself.
Just enough to give us basic cover, hold fire until they're closer, about a kilometer out, then open fire. Catching them in the open should give us a handful of easy kills and being caught in our killzone should cause enough chaos to make them scatter and buy us some time for Tierney to return.

>>
> Build some basic fortifications and get ready to defend yourself.

“Foxholes, dig up some foxholes, hurry!” The three of you start digging. Between the three of you, a scoped Carbine and two rifles, it might just be doable. After all, there’s only thirty five of them. A single foxhole deep enough for you to crouch in should be fine. You also dig up the sand berms around the edges to provide a little more cover as well and a nice stable place to rest your carbine on. Soon enough, yours is done first. Nielson’s second, and Graves manages to get hers done in good time given her arm.

You place the carbine on the sand and brace it. You take another look through your binoculars and get a range in. They’re closing in to about three kilometers now. Seems they’re walking at a quick pace too. They might not know that you’re still alive, you should have the drop on them.

Once they close to within a kilometer, they stop up and wait.

“What are they doing?” asks Nielson.

You continue to peer with your binoculars. “Hold on.” One of the Raptors takes out its own set of binoculars it seems and tries to look. Seems they’re scouting things out first from a distance, wisely, smartly. But they don’t seem to have spotted you yet. “Seems they’re trying to see if we’re dead or not.”

“What do we do then?” asks Graves.

> Wait for them to get close, then start shooting.

You decide to wait. Everyone tucks into their holes. You peek your head out slowly over the berm and watch them close in. They’ve quickened their pace. The Troodon take the lead in a loose formation, while the Raptors follow behind them. Their distance closes from one kilometer, to half that, to a quarter, until you can actually see their eyes. They slow their pace down to a slow walk with the Command from one of the Raptors, a Major. The Major barks, getting everyone to advance forward slowly towards the Medevac. They go around the shell craters, sniffing the air for any signs of you. They’ll catch you soon enough. You look at Nielson. He nods. He knows to aim for the Raptors. So does Graves.

Right. On your go.

You stand up and fire. The first shot zaps the Major straight through the eye. The other Raptors turn, aiming their shotguns at you. Nielson and Graves immediately fire upon them, downing two and sending the others into a frenzied panic. The Troodon chirp and shriek at the sudden chaos as you start downing them one at a time with careful shots to the head and heart. The Raptors fire their guns, sending pellets against the sand and nearly blinding you from the impact. You duck down.

“On the right!” yells Nielson. Two Troodon try to flank around. Graves stands up and wastes them with a spray of full-auto plasma. You stand back up again and fire. The shot pastes the other Raptor Minor. The remaining Minor screams before Nielson hits it in the heart, felling it like a tree. “Boss, behind you!” You turn and see a Troodon pounce. But a plasma shot whips straight through its neck, sending it crashing into your hole. “Nice shot, Graves!” Another Troodon bursts from a hole, but you draw your knife and jab it straight up through its chin. It bites, spasming and struggling as the blade cuts through its lower jaw before you pull it around and smash the skull against the ground.

Another Troodon runs straight through the plasma fire and jumps at Nielson. “Oh shi-“ Nielson is tackled down. “Ah! Son of- get off!” Several Troodon flee in the chaos, but still a few, maybe three or four remain. They jump into shell craters and try to work their way around the sandy berms and piles kicked up by the Mortars. Graves fires her rifle at them, trying to keep them suppressed.

You spring out of your foxhole then run over to Nielson’s. You find him wrestling with the Troodon, his hands gripping its wrists. It jabs its toe claws into his chest, but finds only the breastplate. You shoot the Troodon off of him. “Ah, son of a-“ He throws the body off of him, then feels his cheek. “Bastard cut my face up! Agh!” He wipes blood off of his cheek, showing the grisly cuts along it. “Stupid!” Nielson picks up his rifle and fires more shots into the dead Troodon. “Frakking stupid animal!”

“Over here!” yells Graves. A Troodon bursts out of its hiding hole and tries to pounce on her. Graves whacks it with the butt of her rifle then follows up with a double tap to the head. You and Nielson hurry over and fire at the rest. The hiding Troodon proceed to flee, running back south. But then you hear a noise like an engine coming from the woods. Tierney!

The truck bursts out of the trees, running over the Troodon over under the wheels before she drives on over to the three of you. Tierney pokes her head out of the window. “Are you guys okay!?”

“Doing good!” you say. “Get the AutoDocs in, quick!” The three of you hurry to get the AutoDocs. You and Nielson grab the arms and legs of the first while Graves drags the second on over.

“Okay, we got the AutoDocs, now what!?” yells Graves. “It’s gonna take an hour to cut that thing out!”

“We’ll have to cut out the tracker while we’re moving,” you say. “Tierney, can you keep the truck steady as we go along?” She nods, giving a quick salute at the prospect. Truth be told you’ve never seen Tierney drive but so far she hasn’t steered you wrong. “Alright. Nielson, get everything working, will you?” Nielson climbs in and quickly works to get the AutoDoc working. You and Graves follow in after, hurrying yourselves to hold onto something while Tierney whirls the truck around. Nielson scraps parts from one of the AutoDocs then starts fixing them up into the other.

“Good thing we went for both!” Nielson declares, still bleeding out of his cheek. “This AutoDoc here was missing its anesthetic tank and had some faulty parts from the corrosion! This might go easier than we might think!” He switches the AutoDoc on. The AutoDoc sits up, its vision strip on its head lighting up white.

“HELLO. I AM AN AUTOMATIC SURGICAL AND ADVANCED MEDICAL PRACTICE SERVILE ROBOT,” the Autodoc declares in a loud morale boosting voice.

“Oh shit.” Graves does not look happy. “Can you shut the voice module off?” she asks.

Nielson says, “Uh, I just switched it-“ The AutoDoc stands up and starts marching over to Joffrey. Joffrey groans, lying in the bed. “I mean, I’d have to turn it off to switch the voice off.”

“PATIENT DETECTED, SCANNING.” The AutoDoc quickly scans Joffrey, then declares, “FOREIGN OBJECT DETECTED, ALONG WITH A MULTITUDE OF OTHER SEVERE INJURIES AND MISSING LIMBS. DO NOT WORRY, SOLDIER. I WILL GET YOU BACK INTO THE FIGHT.”

Joffrey cries out, “Can you shut that frakking thing up!?” The AutoDoc quickly injects Joffrey with anesthetics, silencing him. Joffrey goes under, lying limp. The AutoDoc draws a multitude of surgical tools from its arms and hands and leans over.

“ERROR, INVALID-“ The truck shakes as it goes over a bump. “INVALID ENVIRONMENT DETECTED. RISK OF ACCIDENTAL MALPRACTICE: MEDIUM.” Graves responds by grabbing her pistol and whacking it over the head.

“I’ll invalid you!” shouts Graves.

The AutoDoc recoils from the impact, then straightens out. “INVALID ENVIRONMENT OVERRIDEN. CONTINUING SURGERY.” It draws a number of tools from its arms and legs and starts going to work on Joffrey.

Graves sighs, then says, “Nielson, get over here.” Nielson comes over, to which Graves slaps a plaster of medigel on his cheek. He winces, yelping a little from it. “Son of a bitch, I oughta…” Nielson sits down, nursing himself. Graves meanwhile leans on one of the consoles. “Well, I guess we did it! Nice work, Daddy! We both got wounded but at least we did it!”

“What do we do with the tracker once it’s out though?” asks Nielson.

“We’ll figure it out once it’s out.” Truth be told you’re really not sure what to do with the tracker once it’s out of Joffrey. Trashing it in the middle of nowhere is an option. Might get the Lizards to waste their time and may even result in some friendly fire. Trashing it in Toothy’s hold might hopefully kill him and his cohorts. Sending it into the ocean will ensure you won’t have to worry about it again. But outright destroying it? They might shell it’s last known location. Probably better to leave it rather than destroy it. Graves sighs, rubbing her arm. “I just want to tell you guys quick though, you all did good.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Graves rolls her eye, wrapping gauze around her forearm. “Just so you know, Daddy. Joffrey’s going to need help actually living. He doesn’t have hands, he doesn’t have eyes, nothing. He can barely walk. We’re going to have to feed him and guide him until he can at least get some improvised prosthetics or something.”

“You saying you won’t take care of him?” you ask.

“I’ll take care of him, I’ve had worse,” says Graves. “I’m just sad for him. Even once we get it out of him, we still have to explain that he’s going to remain like that until help arrives. If it ever arrives.” Right. The big news. You still have to inform him about that. She looks at Nielson, who gingerly pokes at his cheek. “Hey, sweetie. Just so you know, that’s probably not going to scar as badly as you think.”

“Right, not like the rest of my body,” he mutters.

“You know.” Graves rubs her fingernails on her sleeve, taking a look at them for a second. “Early told me she really loves guys with scars.” Nielson looks over, interested.

“Sh-… she said that?” Nielson asks.

“She can’t frakking talk, what do you think she told me!?” Graves shouts. Nielson shrinks a little, both disappointed, confused, and saddened. “God. You’re such a kid.”

“Now, Graves. Don’t be like that, you’re being a very bad mom to him,” you say firmly. Graves gives you the finger in response, sticking her tongue out.

The AutoDoc steps back, then holds up the tracker. “FOREIGN OBJECT REMOVED. PLEASE DISPOSE OF IT IN A SAFE AND SECURE MANNER, AND PLEASE DO NOT INGEST INEDIBLE OBJECTS AGAIN EITHER THROUGH THE ORAL, NASAL, OR ANAL CAVITY.” You take the tracker, thinking on it.

Why don't we use it to set up an ambush to kill the rex and champion? Or lead the force away from the Q-base and smash it hard. If we could do one of those things it could buy us more time to see if we can gather more supplies or gather more of the shattered army. Such a golden opportunity shouldn't be wasted.

Oh, yah just caught up glad I could join. Been a fun read!
>>
I've been thinking about more actually, but if we can set up ambushes where the transmitter goes. We can cut their numbers and make the enemy lose strength using gorilla tactics. If we carried this out correctly we could do a few things. Number one with this tactic we can lure out the defenses of Q-Base and weaken them. If we piss them off enough we could force the champion and Rex out in order to kill them. If we can't lure them out with this tactic then at least we weaken the defenses allowing us to maybe be able to take the base depending on the numbers. A good opening would be to bring out the big daddy sniper rifle and see if we can't kill the rex. If we can't destroy the base as a whole we should raid it and do as much damage as a strike force. The thing we need to at least do is take out the motors if not take them for ourselves or at least the ammo since the explosion. All in all, we need breathing room.

> Take it out and place it somewhere.

You wipe some of the blood, stomach acid, and other indiscernible fluids off of the tracker, then place it in your belt. “I’ll take it,” you say. “Maybe I can toss it into one of their camps. They’re clearly ranging across the river so maybe I can discourage that a little bit.”

Graves says, “Oh look, Daddy’s going out for another run.”

“Unless you want to go back and have Burke do it,” you say quickly. “Tierney, stop the truck.” Tierney stops the truck, slowly. You jump out and come out to the front of the cab. “Go back to the base, make sure Joffrey and the others are taken care of.” Tierney nods, stern expression on her face. “By the way, good work you’ve done today. You’re pretty good at driving.”

“I’m just as surprised as you are,” she says with a smile. “Thanks. I better see you back, okay?”

“Alright,” you say. Tierney drives on without you. You take a breath, holding the tracker. You decide to start marching north. As long as you’re moving, hopefully they won’t launch any mortar strikes.

After a quick cold meal from a C-Ration, you wipe some sweat off of your brow and take a breather. Just a few seconds, then get moving again. You press onwards, moving up. Fairly soon, you see an orange glow of a camp fire up ahead. It’s faint, but it’s close. You kneel down and start approaching through the bushes. You’re only half a klick south of the Hill 47 river. Hopefully this is the farthest south they’re coming.

You slowly poke your head up and see what it is. It’s a small encampment, of five tents centered around a fire. A Pachycephalosaurus is being roasted on a spit while two Troodon spin it slowly over a small fire. Other Troodon lie on scratchy looking bedrolls while the Raptor Minor leading them puffs on some kind of smoking pipe. It blows smoke from its nose, shuddering lightly as it sits down and watches the Troodon cook the meal. Must be at least ten of them.

Seems they haven’t noticed you. So…

You quickly plant the tracker, as close as you can to their camp. Then you shovel some dirt over it so they won’t immediately notice it. Hey, if it can transmit from inside someone’s stomach, a little dirt probably won’t affect it either. You quickly get going, back towards camp. You’ll have to do a bit of a loop around so your tracks don’t go straight there but it shouldn’t be too hard. Seems the Deinos aren’t too active tonight. They might’ve been drawn off south by whatever that gunfire was. Now that you think on it, the Lizards are probably trying to close into the swamp from the South judging by those noises.

Seems you’ll be fighting a two front war in the near future. Not something you particularly want to find yourself a part of. You get yourself set and head back to base.

You arrive back at the crashed starship. Once you come up to the doors, you see the full extent of the damage to the command truck. Several holes from fragments are dotted along the metal exterior. Not to mention there’s still blood inside from where Graves bled. The AutoDocs look to have been moved inside judging by their absence. Morrison nudges you. “You okay, boss?”

“Yeah,” you say, rubbing your eyes. “Where’s everyone?” You see Grimshaw leaning against the door, hand on his rifle. Burke looks down from her post at you before looking northwards.

“Went inside to get patched up. Lieutenant Harrell and Sergeant Cope are talking with them now.” Great. You nod to Morrison. Grimshaw pulls the door open and allows you to step inside. Best to face the music now rather than later. You walk down towards the Medbay and open the door.

“- and the reckless nature of your little adventure here almost got you all killed!” Sergeant Cope shouts. Graves, Nielson, and Tierney sit on one of the tables getting lectured by Sergeant Cope. Joffrey lies on one of the tables behind them, being tended to by the functioning AutoDoc. Lieutenant Harrell stands to the side, arms folded. “And I should let you know that-“ You step inside. Sergeant Cope turns to you, as does Harrell. “Corporal, you’re back.”

“Let me guess, they filled you all in?” you ask. Lieutenant Harrell nods. Oh, lovely.

Sergeant Cope steps up to you. “You took a real big risk doing what you did. Considering Joffrey is little more than an invalid at this point, he doesn’t have any hands or eyes and from what the AutoDoc tells us he won’t be able to walk anymore either without crutches… he’s as useful as a hat full of busted assholes.” Well, that’s a very polite way to put it. “I should also mention that enlisting these three to do your bidding as well almost got them killed. Not to mention that the tracker for a very brief period of time was allowed to come here, meaning the Lizards could know we’re based here.”
>>
“You don’t know that for sure, sir,” you say. “They didn’t hit us with artillery, did they?”

Lieutenant Harrell places his hands on his hips, sighing. “Corporal. They did not. And you were right to bring him here considering you’re not a surgeon or a trained medic either. But the actions you took tonight were-”

“W-… well what was he supposed to do?” asks Tierney. Cope and Harrell give her very mean looks in response. Tierney shrinks a little, clenching her thighs and pulling her hands together. “Lieutenant, you asked that Joffrey be found. He found him. And he couldn’t just leave him either. The tracker isn’t his fault either. The Lizards are just sadistic bastards for doing something like that.”

“Clever ones too,” says Graves. “They know we don’t like leaving people behind. We’ve seen this before, they’ve used our dead to try and trick us into an ambush once.”

Sergeant Cope sighs, rubbing his nose. “We’ll discuss this in the morning.” He brushes past you.

Lieutenant Harrell walks up to you, then says, “For what it’s worth, Corporal. Thank you for bringing Joffrey back to us.” He pats your shoulder. “Good work.” With that, he also takes his leave as well.

Graves sighs, folding her arms. “Can’t believe there’s a day that Cope actually gets on my nerves.” She steps off the table, rubbing at her freshly bandaged arm. “Daddy, you better get some goddamn rest.” Nielson steps off the table and starts heading towards the door. Graves grabs his collar. “Stop, sweetie. I need to take a look at your cheek.” Nielson sighs, frustrated. “Sit the frak down.” He goes and takes a seat back at the table. Tierney clears off, slowly walking to the door. Graves clicks her teeth, then nudges her head at Tierney. Eh? You look at Tierney. She expectantly walks to the door, glancing at you before walking again.

“Tierney.” You call out to her. She stops, turning around to you to face you. You step up and say, “Good work out there. Genuinely.” Tierney blinks in surprise for a second, then grins, beaming with pride. She takes off her helmet and nods, grateful.

“Thank you! I-… I was just doing my best out there! You gave me a chance,” she says. “Trust me, I- I don’t… I’m not going to waste chances given to me.” Of course. You reach out and pat her head, ruffling her hair a little. She giggles a little, gently leaning into it before stepping back. She smiles, a very intense blush on her cheeks before she turns and leaves. “I- I-…” She stops, looking at you. “Good night!” she says, before exiting out the door.

You fold your arms, sighing. Truth be told, while she didn’t see direct combat, Tierney did prove to be good help out there tonight. Credit where it’s due you suppose. You look back at Graves and Nielson. Nielson glances away, pursing his lips while Graves simply says, “You two seriously need to frak already, she is so thirsty I swear.”

“And you’re not?” you snap back.

“Hmph. Got me there.” Graves takes a clean rag out and starts cleaning blood off of Nielson’s face. “You better get some sleep, Daddy. I reckon you’re going to have a long day ahead of you tomorrow.” Fair. But, maybe there’s some stuff to do first.

“How long do you think Joffrey’s going to be?” you ask.

“A few hours,” she says. “You weren’t thinking of trying to stay up to brief him, were you?” Well, you were. But a few hours is a few hours lost sleep. You’ll just head to the barracks and catch some sleep. “I’ll tell him once he wakes up, don’t you worry. And since we have an AutoDoc here, come back when you can. We can fix up your hand and your back.”

“What, no massage?” you ask, smirking.

“You had your chance. Now get out.” Fair. You step out of the medbay and go down to the barracks.

You suppose a good night’s sleep is in order.

You were having a very pleasant dream involving Graves, Tierney, and Burke all at once up until Burke kicks you in your back. A sharp pain shoots up right into your neck, making you quickly sit up and nurse it with your hands. Goddamn it, Burke. “Wake up, Boo.” She places down a plate of some unidentifiable white meat, probably from the Dimorphodons. You take your fork and start eating as you stand up. Burke leans on one of the tables separating you from the other bedrolls. “Have a pleasant dream?”

“It was actually,” you say. “Did you see anything while you were on watch?”

“Nah,” Burke says. “No Deinos or nothing. I think we must’ve scared them off after their initial attack. No telling though if they might come back or not.” You hope not. You’d rather not have to fight another war against the natives. “Just so you know, Cope wanted to see you about what happened last night.”

“What did he say?” you ask.

“I dunno, but he looked pretty pissed, Boo.” She shrugs, clearly not caring about Cope’s opinion. “Way I see it though, he probably would’ve been pissed even if you just left Joffrey back there anyway. Which by the way, you did make an insane risk bringing him back in the state he was in.”

“I mean, I didn’t know about the tracker-“

Burke stops you. “Yeah, yeah, no fraks given about that. I’m talking about the fact that he can’t walk without assistance or do anything for himself given he has no hands or eyes. He can’t even jack himself off anymore. Not unless he’s supremely flexible anyway.” You frown. You’d figure Burke to have at least understood your intention. But you guessed wrong perhaps. “Anyway. Get the frak out of my bedroll.”

“This is my bedroll,” you say.

“It’s –mine- now,” she says, stepping past you and plopping her ass onto the bedroll. “If you wake me, it better be for something important.” She pulls the thin sheet over herself and then rolls the pillow over head.

You sigh, rubbing your nose.

You find Cope outside, checking his rifle over as the other man on watch. Stoakes stands guard on the other side of the door next to him. And you can see Godwin up in the high hide watching out towards the north. “Sergeant.” Cope looks at you, slinging his rifle under his arm. “You wanted to talk to me?”

“Yes, I did.” He looks past you. “Stoakes.” Stoakes looks over. “Go inside for a few minutes, let me and the Corporal talk.” She nods, glancing at you nervously before stepping inside. She shuts the door behind her. “Now, Corporal. We need to discuss what happened last night.”

“Sir, I’m not sure there is anything to be discussed, we got the tracker out of Joffrey. We saved his life,” you state firmly. What is there that needs to be discussed now? How much you’re doing more than he is? “You did,” he says. “And I’m sure Lieutenant Harrell is grateful for that. But the risks took saving his life are… unacceptable in my opinion. Now, I’m of the mind that I too would go to great lengths to save my people. Hell, I’ll save your life, I know you’ll save mine in the end too. We watch out for each other. But what’s been done last night put us all at risk. Say you didn’t think to scan him for a tracker. Say you accidentally lead them back across the river to us. If the Lizards find out where we live, we don’t exactly have many options here.” He turns around, motioning to the ship. “Look at this place. Look at the single entrance we have. And the only other being that hole in the ceiling. Now, we haven’t gone exploring in the bottom of the ship since the night before last night. We don’t know what’s down there aside from what I’ve been told is a big floating ball that shoots tranqs at people.”

“Your point, sergeant?” you ask.

“If we get into a siege, we don’t have any other ways out,” he states firmly. “I want to avoid leading things back here as best as I can. You understand?” You nod, if only to keep him talking. “Good. Now, you know how Joffrey is doing?”

“Far as I know, he should be awake by now,” you state. Graves did say she would let Joffrey in on the big news. Hopefully he takes it well. You don’t need a hysterical cripple in the ranks after all. “The AutoDoc we recovered should be a big help for us, sergeant.”
>>
“Right.” He rubs his chin, grimacing a little as he leans on the barricade. “You realize that if he can’t fight or walk or even see anything, he’s a drain on our ability to function.” You’ve had Burke and Graves tell you that nonstop since last night, so it is in fact breaking news to you. “Corporal. I would consider putting him to sleep if we can’t figure out something for him to do. Something that would help us.”

“Sir, he’s a combat engineer.” You step up closer to him, hand on your belt. “He’s our –only- trained engineer as well. He may not be able to see, but he can teach. Nielson’s gifted with mechanics. He fixed up the AutoDocs after all. Imagine what he can teach Nielson.”

“Hmph.” Sergeant Cope shakes his head. “I’m only making a suggestion, Corporal.”

“Sergeant, I would sooner throw myself out of a tree than euthanize someone purely for being a drain on resources.” You place your hands on your belt, stepping up closer to him. Sergeant Cope is nearly your size. Nearly. “He’s our only trained engineer. We may not find another one out there. If we lose him, we lose quite a bit. He could guide us on how to make better barricades, fix lights, maybe even recharge our powerpacks without an MRU. He’s valuable, even in his rather ‘invalid’ state. So I would rather we keep him alive, Sergeant. We don’t euthanize people for being useless in my mind like Lizards.”

Sergeant Cope grunts, glancing away. “Fair point, Corporal. But if he doesn’t share that knowledge, then I’m not sure what we can do with him.”

“Leave it to me, Sergeant,” you say. “And perhaps, maybe one day you can go ahead and make yourself useful as well. If you feel everyone must earn their keep, everyone has to find some way to be useful here.” He nods, an inquisitive look on his face. You’ve tried to word it politely. Hopefully he gets it. “Will that be all?”

“That will be all, Corporal. Go ahead and take the day off if you’d like. After all, you have had a busy night last night.” Hmph. You walk to the door and open it up, then step inside. Sergeant Cope watches you leave all the way.

Stoakes looks at you as you step inside. “The Sarge doesn’t seem very happy.” You shrug. She moves to take her post once again. “Hey, listen. For what it’s worth, Corporal. I think you did the right thing. I don’t think a lot of people would go so far for Joffrey. He was kind of a kissass before we dropped in that night.” She smiles, then walks out the door. She stops, then looks to you. “By the way, Corporal. Tierney was looking for you.”

> Tierney is looking for you.

“You know where she is?” you ask.

“In the common room, probably messing about with Whitney and Early,” Stoakes says. “Tell Tombs I said ‘hi’ if you see him, okay?” She shuts the door behind her, leaving you alone.

Lets go to Tierney first
>>
> Go find Tierney in the common room.
> Check on Joffrey in the medbay.

You open the door to the common room and find Tierney eating her breakfast in there with Whitney and Early. Whitney is jabbering on about something indistinct. “… and then I says to her, you know what I says? I says, ‘the nature of being a good person means doing good things because they feel good, not because you’re obligated to’ and she tells me, ‘yeah, frak off, lady’. Like who even does that? Can you believe that, Early?” Early looks at Whitney, then shrugs. “She can’t believe it either.”

“Tierney,” you call. Tierney looks over, then you beckon her to follow you with your finger. She quickly inhales her breakfast, then jogs on over. “Heard you were looking for me.”

“I was,” she says. “I-…” She pauses a bit. “You got anything to do right now?”

“I was just about to head to the Medbay,” you say. “Let’s walk and talk.” She walks beside you as you head on down to the Medbay. “What did you want to speak to me about?”

“Oh, it was-…” She shrugs, rubbing her arm a little. “I just wanted to say thank you for giving me that chance to prove myself out there. I know I didn’t exactly kill anything worth killing but I’m glad you still trust me enough to take me out with you on these things.” Of course you do. For now at least. “I know I’ve been kind of a problem child lately but I’m trying to at least improve and everything.” She giggles, nervously. “You know, for a second there.” The two of you stop outside the medbay. “I thought you were just going to shunt me to the rear and keep me there because you thought I wouldn’t be useful to you.”

“Well.” You smile at her. “I mean-“ Her smile fades a little. She’s caught you. “Look, Tierney, don’t mention it. We all have to do our part. I’m just glad you’re able to do yours.”

“Thanks.” She nods, gently prodding at your hand a bit. “I’m glad to hear that. And, listen, um…” A blush creeps up on her face again as she looks up at you. “You know, the two of us…” She quickly waves it off. “On second thought, nevermind. Let’s not talk about that, right now.”

> “Like I said, maybe not the right time.”
> “Let’s see how Joffrey’s doing.”

> “Let’s see how Joffrey’s doing.”

“Let’s go see how Joffrey’s doing.” Best not to make things too awkward for now. Tierney nods, quiet. You open the door and look inside and see Joffrey sitting on one of the tables, being checked over by Tombs. The gauze around his eyes has been replaced with cleaner ones. Tombs runs a scanner over him, checking every nook and cranny of his veins and innards. The AutoDoc stands in the corner, waiting for patients. And as for Graves, she’s fast asleep in a chair, slumped back, her head leant forward and her hands in her lap. You walk up to Tombs, quietly as not to wake Graves. “How is he doing?” you whisper.

Tombs looks over, his face deep with concern. “He hasn’t talked since Graves told him.” Tombs grasps Joffrey’s stump wrists gently and asks him, “Any feelings of having hands?” Joffrey shakes his head, hanging his head low. Tombs passes his hands over the stumps, no reaction. He sighs, quickly typing something into his scanner. “We can rule out phantom limb syndrome then.”

“Besides that?” you ask.

“He’s stable at least,” Tombs says. “The AutoDoc finished with internal injuries and broken bones. Only thing I’d be concerned with is making sure that Joffrey isn’t left alone.” He places a hand on his medical satchel, frowning a little as looks at you. “I’ll trust Graves to look after him, but I won’t trust myself.” He shakes his head. You know exactly why he’d say that. “For now, Joffrey probably just needs time to process the information and maybe get used to not having hands for now. As for walking, I’ve asked Nielson to jury-rig some crutches together once he’s awake.”

“Fair.” Tierney looks at Joffrey, sorrowful. She gently reaches out to him. When she touches his arm, Joffrey scoots away, looking away from her.

“I’m sorry, Joffrey,” Tierney says quietly. Joffrey doesn’t respond. Tierney sighs, then looks at you. “I’m going to relieve Connell. I’ll be watching the Steno if you need me.” She turns and leaves the Medbay. Likely she can’t take the sight of seeing Joffrey like that. Even you are a little disquieted by the sight. Joffrey’s chest is covered in scars, bruises, and burns. The soles of his feet are charred messes. The stumps of his hands are now covered in clean gauze. And his face was stone dead neutral, with no eyes to betray expression. In a way, it’s heartbreaking to see him like this.

It’d have been merciful for him to join Bakker and Horner. You thought they got a raw deal, but this is something else entirely.

> Go check on the Steno.
> Talk with Tombs. (About what?)

Just a quick checkup, see what it's up to and if anybody has fed it recently. Might want to keep an eye on whatever it's scrapping together out of shit lying around.

Then we can

>>
>> Prepare for an exploration downstairs.
>>
> Go check on the Steno.
> Prepare for an exploration downstairs.

You quickly pop in to see how the Steno is doing. Tierney sits back on the crate, watching as it hammers a plate of metal using a hammer improvised out of a solid piece of scrap. “What’s it doing?” you ask.

Tierney shrugs. “I dunno. It’s just been cutting and hammering pieces of metal since I got here. Connell said it’s been pulling rivets and screws out of the walls too. It doesn’t seem to mind one of us being here so it must not be a weapon I guess.” You never know. But you suppose at least Tierney is keeping an eye on it.

“Well, I’m going downstairs,” you say. “You know anyone who’s available to go down?”

“Wexley and Grimshaw,” says Tierney. “They were up and didn’t seem to have much to do I think.” Fair enough. Three people will be a little odd but it’s best not to go downstairs alone anyway. “I think you can find them in the common room.”

“Thanks,” you say. “You take care, okay?” Tierney smiles, nodding eagerly.

“Here.” Wexley hands you a glowstick to place on your person. “It’s going to get dark down there. I got some more of these so we can mark where we’ve been so we don’t get lost.” An excellent thing to have. Grimshaw waits with his rifle, a little on the bored side. “Right, shall we then?” The three of you unstack the barricade, then get moving down the stairwell. Once you’re down there, you notice something immediately.

The lights on. All of them. In this long chamber with all the tanks and tubes, you can now clearly see everything. The lights themselves are slightly dim, some of them flicker, but they are in fact on. “Ooookay. Li’l on the creepy side,” Grimshaw remarks. “I don’t think anyone mentioned the lights coming back on.” Nope. And nobody was down here since you were last there. You decide for now to go back to the map room.

There you find the map, now more visible from a distance. It flickers violently, the image of the galaxy now distorted. Perhaps that ball’s been a little more busy than you thought. You look around and see the two doors now open. If it’s up here, maybe it’ll make itself known. You look down both sides. Seems both lights are on in both hallways on the north and south side. Actually, looking around the place now. Things seem… neater? As if something deliberately came by and cleaned the place up.

Grimshaw says, “Okay, I’m reconsidering coming down here with you guys. Can we go back up?”

> Whatever is down here is definitely active now. Better go back up until you get a bigger force of people.
> “No. Let’s move into those hallways and let’s go.”

> Investigate the map room first. Maybe there’s something that can explain what this ship is.

“Let’s investigate first,” you say. “See what we can find in here.” The three of you fan out, but make absolute sure to stay within talking distance of each other. You go through tables, shelves, cabinets, and other areas.

What you encounter are old black featureless slabs and blocks. Some the size of your hand, some as long as your arm, some as big as you are. The slabs and blocks had a glossy, shiny texture to them. And yet did not reflect your image when you look up close to them. You gently rub your finger against a slab the size of a book and feel it incredibly cold to the touch, smooth to the feel, and yet nothing happens. “What do you make of it?” you ask.

Grimshaw says, “I ain’t a xenoarchaeologist but from my make of it…” He holds up a slab just like yours. “These things must be like their version of PDAS, notebooks, computers, and other things. But they must’ve had some other way of turning them on and operating them. I can’t figure these things out myself.”

“Hmph.” Wexley steps by Grimshaw, smirking. “Says he ain’t a xenoarchaeologist then proceeds to give a detailed theory. You gonna say you’re a cook and then make me a three course meal?”

“Shut up.” Grimshaw gives a very mean glare to Wexley, clearly not appreciating the lip. “I’ll tear your frakking arm off, save you the trouble of having it wither the frak away.” Wexley holds his hands up, defensively as he steps back from Grimshaw.

“Calm down, it was a joke,” you say quickly.

Grimshaw grunts. “Goddamn cripple.” He storms away to investigate another table. Truth be told, once you get back upstairs, maybe it’ll be time to get Wexley an appointment with the AutoDoc to fix his shoulder. Same with your hand and back too. Really, you just want to find out how safe this Starship is. You’re not going to sleep incredibly well until you consider this place safe.

As you move to walk to another table, you see Wexley pick up a large textbook sized slab. But his grip suddenly gives. He drops it. It smacks down on the floor. The surface of it cracks, and the sound of its impact echoes throughout the entire chamber and probably the entire floor. The three of you freeze.

Grimshaw steps forward, looking at Wexley. “Nice frakking going, butterfingers!”

“It was an accident! It was slippery!” yells Wexley.

“Guys, guys!” you shout. “Come on! Let’s not-“ A beep interrupts you. You look up at the ceiling where it came from. Wexley and Grimshaw draw their weapons, ready.
>>
A panel in the ceiling pops open. Out of it comes a pistol-shaped little flying robot. It floats, a high hum being the only sound it makes. Two little wings pop out of its sides while a singular eye glows where the barrel of a pistol would be. It floats down and immediately spots the broken slab. Out of its eye comes a beam of bright blue, which encases the slab in a solid bubble of energy. It brings the slab up to itself, then places it down on the table. It starts firing several smaller beams at the slab.

And amazingly, it’s fixing it! The crack disappears within two minutes of it starting its work. “What is that?” asks Wexley.

“Must be some kind of drone,” you say. Several more of these repair drones fly out of the panel on the ceiling, then start to work restoring lights as well. One of them flies up to you, regarding you curiously. You step back, trying to keep the bright intense light of its eye out of your immediate vision. It simply flies away, then fires a beam at the wall. A square pops out where it fires, revealing a mass of wires, pipes, and other internals to which the drone starts firing off its repair beams to make sense of. “Must be like that ball we encountered.”

“I don’t like it,” says Grimshaw. “Why are they just suddenly doing this now? It was dark and empty when we first came down here. If they were working, you’d think they’d have this ship completely repaired, right?”

Wexley says, “Well, the ship is buried underneath dirt and trees. Who knows how bad it is downstairs? Maybe they just finished up downstairs and only just got up here.”

“Or maybe they were waiting for people to come down here,” Grimshaw adds. He looks around at the drones, gnashing his teeth a little. “I don’t like this.” Then, out of the panel in the ceiling comes something else.

The Big Floating Ball from before. It draws a new tranq gun out of its side. “Look out!” you yell. Grimshaw gets pushed down by Wexley as you duck. It fires, and the syringe breaks against the counter top you were next to. Another Big Floating Ball comes down after the first one. And another one. They all draw tranq guns.

Oh shit.

Well isn't this a surprise, not one but three. I'm going to guess a little and say that, that one robot went and started fixing other robots that were shut off or activated them. The question now is how do we best take the ship? I guess in the eyes of the drones we are considered intruders and are trying to contain us somewhere. Something I don't get is why are they not on the top floor? Maybe each floor has a control center for the drones and the top one is inactive? So many questions...

>>3130841
Also, thank you for the run Survive!

Looks like the drones are looking to do a little research of their own. I wonder if the tranqs have some actual sedatives in them now instead of the rotten mass of whatever the fuck they were before.
