(Please read the end of the last thread! There is an important bonus update worth reading there!)

After spending some hours alone, it’s time to go back to the clinic! A strange string of events happened during your off time, with the strangest one being the snow still falling all over Pokyo Lokyo… on June 3rd.

“It’s getting c-chilly…” You stammer out, the nice blanket the bookstore pumpkin lady gave you barely helping in this intensifying cold. Better move your feet or you’ll get sick, or worse! Someone else might think eating the merged soul of a dwarf spirit warrior multitude from another world would help you to stay healthy in this one, but not you! After all the stuff you’ve been through the past month and a half, it’s best to be safe than sorry.
“Meooooow…” Melodia is curled up under your blanket, still on your shoulder.

You fast-walk through the snow-coated streets, taking care not to slip on any hidden ice. Surprisingly, the loads of people you saw enjoying the snow before have shrunk to a few handfuls moving on their way. The worsening weather must have made them leave by now. With it being past 8 at night and the snow continuing to come down, the streets are eerily quiet, all sound muffled. Pretty spooky.

Several chilling minutes later, you are now outside the clinic. There’s someone out here smoking and watching the snow come down… It’s Osgood. He smokes? He never did that in the Poker Nights…

Do you want to try chatting with him? The clinic door is right there…

>Get inside. You have better things to do right now.
>Give him a friendly ‘hi’ and spark a conversation.
>Write In.

Votes:

Votes are counted until 25 minutes have passed. This rule doesn't apply to the last reply of the day.
Votes that require a dice roll are counted until 15 minutes have passed, so we can speed up the process. Rolls are counted until 10 minutes have passed, so be prepared!

(NEW) Dice Mechanic:

We always roll 1d100s!
Since most people weren’t happy with the system of averaging top four rolls, we’re using best of 2/3/4 depending on the attribute a prompt requires. If Johnny is a genius and it’s a Knowledge based roll, he gets more rolls (Max. 7)! If he sucks, he gets less dice (Min. 2)!

When asked for rolls, I will specify how many you’re going to get. Rolling begins after it’s asked.

Rolling over a 95 is a critical and ignores all other rolls! In the same vein, rolling 5 or under means a critical failure (only for hard rolls and above).

The difficulty of the roll is tied with the effectiveness of the action. In other words, the harder the option the better the result!

Don’t forget that at the end of the day, this is a story-driven quest! What the prompts are describing is more important than the difficulty of the rolls, for results in a fight.

Again, rolls are only counted when they are posted within ten minutes of being asked, so watch out!

Look at him. Destroyed, desperate, and miserably standing outside in the cold – in any other context, you might have given him some time of your day. As it is, you already took enough time for yourself today, and things are going to get worse from now onward. You decide to ignore the blonde college student and head inside the warm clinic…

Inside the medical facility at the reception, there is a television hanging on the wall – the news are on, and some patients lounging around are paying special attention to the featured program. The screen headline reads as follows: “Authorities announce two-day Complete Curfew in Pokyo Lokyo, starting 10:30 PM today!”

“…we have heard from our fantastic chief of police here in Pokyo Lokyo! What a character he is!” It’s the anchorman, Jeremy Ness! A complete shill for the government. “To believe the level of overwhelming threat we’re facing the next two days, but only to deploy every policeman in the city! What confidence! We truly live in great times!”
The anchor woman whose name you don’t know asks a follow-up question. “Here on social media, people are wondering if the authorities are right about the threat, then why aren’t military forces being deployed? Why are they holding back this much?”
“Quite simple! Our dedicated police force was able to overcome the first terrorist threat on their own, with overwhelming success! There is no need to go overboard and expend resources needlessly!” But he just said the whole city is in overwhelming danger! The fuck?! “We can’t let the terrorists think they have any impact on the daily life of our city folk!”

“But… Having a curfew is doing exactly that, yes? Or am I wrong?” No, but you’re going to be fired alright!
Jeremy Ness’ face briefly twitches in exasperation. “B-breaking news! Our dear president is having a press conference to answer some of our inquiries! And here he is now!

Now they cut away from the news talk to show a menacing close-up of Lazarus Don Gordon Jr.!

“I’m not going to answer any questions, but I want to express my complete approval of our Chief of Police ‘Rob Banks’, as well as our police force. I would also like to remind them that failure is not an option. The populace want their city free of all danger? Then that’s what they are going to get.” Probably the most intimidating man in the entire country puts pressure on the whole police in just three sentences! But what’s he getting at? Why would he put the police on the spot this much?

You hear two patients talking. A young man and an old man sitting together near you.

“Why do they keep this information from us?! I could have my treatment in another city…” The snarky young man weeps impotently in his chair.
The weird old man pats the youngling on the back. “Things can get out of hand so easily. Better than letting people die and pretending they couldn’t prevent it.”

“Yeah! Now everyone’s in danger! What terrorist group could be responsible for this?! Or are you going to tell me the Hosts of Rebellion are still around, old timer?”
“They can have fun hurtling around for all I care. They try anything, they’ll get shot! Scum like them deserve it!”
“…Did you purposefully forget they shoot anyone outside? This doesn’t spell like they have the situation under control at all…” Well, that makes your job easier tomorrow, doesn’t it?

…Enough eavesdropping! You need to move out of here! But go where?

Where to next?

That darn Osgood, with his suffering and… Wait, you remember something! With the curfew starting soon, you won’t be able to check on Ajna – maybe you should take a peek and say hi, or something.

“Oh, hey Johnny!” It’s Yu Yan! Oh, she’s alone. Where did your loyal hobo leave your traitorous one? “You heard the news, yeah?”
“Yeah, sounds pretty dangerous. How is everyone holding up?”
“Bear is still in control. Nariko is getting better thanks to yours truly – the rest seem fine to me. I was kind of busy at the time, so I don’t really know for sure.” Yu Yan shrugs. “With the ban and all, the teach is taking it a bit easier. Getting here should be harder.”

“That’s something.” You don’t know how to respond to the news too well. “I’m going back to the apartment. It won’t take me long.”
“Cool! Could you bring back some stuff? I’m gonna write you a list. The big thing I need is some extra clothes. That cool hoodie of mine, ya know? It’s the start of summer and it’s already freezing out.”
“Sure thing.”
“Here, this is the key to Nariko’s apartment. Try not to have too much fun, okay? I don’t want to see you get shot.”

“I can use Philonune, and I have the app too. I’ll set myself an alarm though, just in case. Takes me 15 minutes to get here from my apartment, so… 25 minutes should be enough.” Good thing you can turn invisible in seconds! Anyway, you take out your phone and do so.

“Oh, and that cute little thing you have there…” Yu Yan looks at Melodia. “Neko said she’s great company, could you lend her to me? I think I could form a farm with her and Mooriko.”
“Meow?” Melodia is surprised to be mentioned. Without too much fanfare, Yu Yan takes the small cat from you without your or her consent.
“Hey…” You aren’t too happy about this. She was nice company on your shoulder!

“If you’re going to be outside, at least lend me a hand.” Yu Yan starts playing with Melodia, amusing her.
“Sure… Sure…” You wanted to keep Melodia for a little while longer, but it’s the least you can do for one of the only people you can trust. Now Yu Yan hands you the list. “I’ll come back, I promise.”
“If you take too long, I’m sending Karate Girl after you. And I won’t even have to pay her much!”
“Matilda knows Judo.”
“Same shit, right?”
“Meow!” Melodia supports Yu Yan. She probably doesn’t get what’s going on. “Meow, meow!” The cute cat says directly to you.
“Yes, yes, I’ll take care don’t worry.” You respond to the cute cat, completely understanding her. “Thanks Yu Yan for everything.”

“We’ll have a nice talk about my reward later, now move your ass already!!” Yu Yan says in a playful manner. You raise your eyebrow then slowly go.

And so you left the clinic once again! Osgood is nowhere to be found now, probably headed inside without you noticing. Shit, it’s an obvious fact, but the snow is cold! You need to move fast! You arrive at your apartment building like in 5 minutes; you aren’t going to lose time! First you go to your apartment and gather some things and change clothes. There are still some spare clothes for the girls in here, including one of the good hoodies, so you didn’t need to waste time at Nariko’s apartment.

Now you’re outside of Ajna’s. You knock on the door, and someone promptly answers. Not the person you were expecting though!

“Craig…?” It’s not that surprising, honestly, what with him owning the entire apartment complex.
“Woah kid, what are you doing here? I thought you were almost dead in the hospital.” Craig is surprised too. Seeing you isn’t something most people tend to expect at this hour, huh? “It’s some spirit stuff again?”
“To visit Ajna, and yeah something like that.”
“You have it rough, kid.” Craig smiles. It warms your heart, but does nothing else to help you. “Nice timing though, I need to go take care of some things. Keep an eye on her for me, okay?”

“What? What’s going on with her? She was okay the last time I was here.” Before you got taken out in a stupid way…
“She’s… not doing great. Barely moves anymore.” Craig scratches the back of his head. “Her mother is busy visiting some relatives, so I’m the one taking care of her now. Bad timing with the curfew and all. Should’ve known with the shit you kids told me.”
“Alright, I’ll see what I can do…”

Craig lets you inside the apartment. The place is looking nicer than before, even some real chairs and the table is set up! Must be Craig’s doing. Craig tells you Ajna is in her room before leaving…

Now it’s all up to you.

You’re outside Ajna’s room, the equivalent of the room Amelia and the girls used to stay in.

What now?

>Knock the door and ask her if it’s okay to go in. Be patient and wait.

You decided to knock on the door first, and then text her that it’s you. No sound or message comes back for a solid minute, not even a ‘seen’ in Chat-Now. You decided to give her a call, hearing her phone ring inside. You knock yet again, but nothing. You’re a little worried, but you learned your lesson from last time. Rushing in is never a good idea.

“Partner, maybe we should rush inside. It seems like a good idea right now.” Philonune says that in a worried tone, but through your link you can feel the irony not lost on him.
“We’re not doing that shit again, Philo…” You plainly decide just to open the door, it’s unlocked after all.

You see Ajna on her bed, a big blanket thrown over herself, making her look like a big cucumber or burrito. Eerily reminds you of Scarlet back when you had to deal with her depression! She’s looking your way and keeping her eyes locked on yours. This strange small room is devoid of anything but the bare minimums… Something a guy in a rush would have set up! Probably Craig again…

“Hey…” You mumble out to the depressed girl. Unlike the last few times, she looks completely clean! Did Craig bathe her…? Maybe her mother did before leaving? Who knows? “Sorry for barging in uninvited again…” Kinda late to apologize, but it’s only fair.
There is no anxiousness or fear coming from her. Absolutely nothing. There’s only her eyes fixated on yours. Guess Bradford’s death affected her too much. Someone mentioned they were friends – does Ajna even have any anymore? All you heard was the Osgood stuff. You’re still woefully lacking in information here…
“Are you okay with me being here, or should I leave?” You ask politely yet again, getting the overall feeling that she’s regressed since last time.

“S-stay…” The word was barely audible to you, standing in the doorway, but you caught it.

“Alright.” You move closer. No place to sit except her bed. “Can I sit here?”
No response from Ajna except a slight tilt of her head one way, continuing to observe you. If she had anything to say, she would probably have said it there. Wanting to trouble her the least you possibly can, you sit at the foot of her bed. You know deep down you are the least appropriate person for the job, but nobody else is here to replace you.
“How are you feeling?”
“Nothing…” That’s not how you respond to that type of question! Either way, you get where she’s coming from. Somewhat.

You don’t need to be a psychologist to notice the bright side of this situation – Ajna is still talking to you.

“I get what you mean. It’s not my brightest day either. You can talk to me if you want.” Feels like the understatement of the week to say that, with how bad things really are.
“I don’t wanna… talk…” Her voice comes out as a whisper.
“You sure? People say I’m a go— okay listener.” You adjust your glasses. Nobody has ever said to that to you in your life, but she doesn’t need to know that. Almost slipped out a ‘good’ just now…
“T-T-T-T-This is fine…” Ajna really is dead inside. Maybe a more active approach could get her going.

“Wanna go see the snow with me? It’s right outside and nobody else is around.”
“S-s-snow…?” Ajna’s eyes start to shine. Does she like snow? Then it’s a good coincidence it started to become winter in June!
“I’m not even joking; it’s snowing for some reason. Started a few hours ago and now it’s January all over again.” You scratch the back of your head. “You’ll need more than just your blanket. Trust me, I know from experience.”
Ajna slowly crawls next to you and starts pushing your back. She wants you gone, probably.
“You want me to leave?” Is that a no?
“C-ch-change…” She points to herself, all red again. Cute.

“Oh my bad. I’ll be out here then.” She’s moving on her own! Better not take her momentum away.

Ajna appears shortly after, wearing a knit beanie and scarf, the rest of her hidden under her blanket. Hopefully whatever she has on under there is warm enough for this. You smile at her and walk towards the door, leaving Ajna to trail behind you with an unknown level of enthusiasm. Sure, it’s technically her cowering behind you – but compared to how she’s been up to now it’s boundless joy.

The snowy night is a beautiful sight; Ajna puts her hands on the cold handrail and stares out in awe at the wintry city scenery, bathed in orange and white. For this brief moment, Ajna looks like a normal happy teenage girl…

Your sister used to be the same way.

You just want everyone to be a little happy again…

Even if everyone is happy again, it won’t help them stay alive tomorrow.

Ajna extends her hands out to the falling snow, gathering as much as she’s capable. It’s snowing rather heavily compared to how it was before… Out of nowhere, she throws some at you! It’s a direct hit! She waited for her chance to make a shitty snowball without you paying attention! What a devious girl! A wry smile appears on her face, but it quickly falls apart into concern.

“D-d-d-did I hit you too ha-hard?” The look Ajna gives you is… sympathy? “I-I’m sorry…”
“What are you talking about? There’s nothing wro—” Then you feel it on your face and cheeks. You thought it was snow blowing in your face, but… You quickly wipe them away. “Shit, damn allergies…”
“Y-you’re having a bad day, r-r-right?” Ajna is very talkative now, the snow doing wonders for her mood. Better keep her good streak going away from these thoughts.
“Yeah…”

That curious stare of hers tells you what she wants to hear from you.

Do you really want to tell her about all that stuff?

>“It’s okay, don’t worry. Just a bad day like I said.” You feel like shit, no point in hiding that. It doesn’t mean she needs to know the details.
>“Hey, allergies are no joke.” What are you allergic to? The snow? Betrayal? Failure? Better keep it vague – for your own good, not hers.

“If you wanna play it that way, let’s head down there. Show me what you can do.” She thinks she can have all the fun? Snowball fight time! Let’s go! You make your way to the stairs.
Poor Ajna doesn’t know how to react. She gets all nervous, but that doesn’t stop her from following you anyway!

And so, the war began! Snowballs were thrown! Bases were destroyed! Blood was shed! Tragedy was struck! Pure unaltered carnage! Philonune even gave you pointers on how to throw snowballs better! At some point, you caught Craig watching you two having a blast, smiling, then going back to Ajna’s apartment. Probably has more stuff to do, or maybe didn’t want to interrupt the two of you! Ajna is giggling and smiling like you’ve never seen her before! It gives you a sense of satisfaction, seeing her go from the traumatized wreck she used to be, to this. Though she’s not any less of a traumatized wreck, some progress is better than no progress.

And just when you were starting to enjoy the moment, something happens to ruin it all…

You! I’ve finally found you! Where is she?! Answer me!” It’s the voice of a man you haven’t seen for years. The only man you, without any shadow of a doubt, hate with every cell of your body… A man you once falsely called your own father… The man responsible for your own mother’s death. Amelia’s father: Joel Tomah.

To say you expected something like this to happen would be a blatant lie. This absolutely came out of nowhere. No, now that you think about it, it does make sense: the curfew will be up soon, and you’re the only person who cares about Amelia enough to know where she is! But why here?! Why now?! Out of the corner of your eye, Ajna moves closer to you as the man you loathe stumbles his way through the heavy snow. Joel is using a cane, barely able to walk straight. His hair is messy, he’s not even bothering to wipe the snow on his glasses, and he looks like he hasn’t shaved in a while.

Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

“I asked you where my daughter is! Didn’t you hear the news?! They’re going to shoot anyone on sight in a few hours! Where is she?! She’s not answering any of my calls! Son, please…!”

“Anywhere is safer than with you.” You respond as cold as you can, beginning to disappear using Philonune’s ability. You’ve been using this all day since you realized you could do this. Almost bordering on abuse, but it doesn’t really matter.

Joel can’t believe his eyes, tripping on the snow after you perform your little magic trick, Ajna is also speechless, eyes looking at random spots in the air where you were standing. The snow continues falling on you even with this chameleon effect, and Ajna is close enough to notice that. Moving your feet and legs slowly and steadily, you move yourself away from the scene, trying to ignore that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach.

“W-where did he go...?!” Joel shouts in confusion, moving his head this way and that.

Ajna just shrugs and starts walking back towards the building. You wish Craig had better security for this place – too easy for this scum to get inside if you think about it!

Joel is not happy about what’s happening. The tears flow free – but they’re not of concern or desperation. They’re of rage.
“G-Girl! You know where he is, don’t ya?!” Joel screams at Ajna, who starts running for the stairs. “Don’t you move one muscle!” Joel pulls out a gun from one of his coat pockets and pulls back the safety. It makes a clicking noise echo through the area, unimpeded by the snow. Both you and Ajna freeze in place.
Holy fuck! Where and when did he get one?! Doesn’t he know about the law? It’s illegal to have any type of gun in the nation! You can get shot on sight!
Whatever the law says or otherwise, it doesn’t stop Joel from pointing the gun at Ajna. The traumatized girl slowly turns around, facing the man without a word. You catch her shooting glances at the spot you were before, not knowing where you are now. “Johnny, come out wherever you are! O-or else… O-or else…!” The look on Joel Tomah’s face might just be the purest anguish you’ve ever seen from anyone in your whole life.

He’s more than deranged than your sister was today! You need to stop him!

>Rush and attack him with Philonune! Just try to knock him out, whatever it takes you!
>Get closer and try to take his gun away! The snow will prevent him from finding it!
>Appear next to him and punch him in the face yourself! Might knock him out!

You get closer to Ajna, pacing yourself to avoid being sick and to avoid Joel noticing snowflakes stopping in midair. “Ajna, don’t worry, he won’t do anything to you…” You whisper to your friend. Ajna’s body relaxes slightly the moment she hears you speak. Though the situation is still delicate, Joel is the same – not getting any angrier, but not getting any calmer either.

Now you move to the other side of the conflict zone to gather his attention away from Ajna… Then you activate the Crimzone for safety. It has a range adjustment and indicator on the app, so you make it big enough to cover this whole place. Sorry Craig or anyone inside using anything remotely mechanical!

“What are you going to do, Joel? Kill her like you killed my mother for money? A plan that was meant for me?” You finally confront him, calling out from where you stand.
Amelia’s father spins around so hard you think he would have whiplash. “W-what are you talking about?! You can’t possibly know that! Where are you?!” He starts flailing the gun around, aiming in random directions. He aims straight at you twice without realizing it. Ajna ducks in place, but Tomah is too frantic to pay attention to her. “Answer me, god damn it! Johnny!”

“Why do you deserve to know where Amelia is, huh?” Following up on the idea, you start moving in another direction to throw him off further.
“I don’t care if I deserve it or not! I’ll protect my little girl, no matter what! Now tell me where she is! NOW!” The grieving lunatic screams and shouts like a little boy. “Tell me where she is, son! Don’t make me shoot her, tell me! You don’t know what I’m capable of for my f-family!”
“Yes I do.” Joel spins around again. His eyes are twitching all over the place. “Capable of killing them for money.” You start changing positions again. In the middle of doing this, you can’t help but note how effective this strategy is.
“Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! You know nothing! You’re just a cheeky brat spouting lies! I was right to kick you out! Amelia’s better off without you around! Everyone is!” He’s beyond demented now. He would be frothing at the mouth if he could. If he did, you don’t know what you would do. Laugh, maybe.

Every single thing that comes out of his fucking mouth makes you want to stab him with Philonune and let the rest sort it out… But that would leave your little sister with one less family member. It wouldn’t solve anything. It would just make things worse.

Like father like daughter, huh?

He scoffs and points his gun back towards Ajna.“Too late, Johnny! Your girl here is dead, and it’s all your fault!” Ajna relaxes her body and closes her eyes, accepting her fate.

Joel pulls back the trigger. Nothing happens, not even a clicking noise. “W-what the fuck? Why isn’t it working…?!” He repeats the action multiple times. Nothing happens.

“Your shit won’t work here. Amelia is safe, that’s all you need to know. Now go back to your house and wait out the curfew.”
“You little…!” Tomah is pure impotent rage right now. He has no other choice but to run. Joel tumbles his way out of the front of the apartment as he shoves his useless gun back in his coat… His car is probably somewhere nearby. You let him get away freely, knowing you can find him later.

After you wait a minute to make sure he’s not going to suddenly return, you drop the chameleon effect and walk towards Ajna.

Before you could open your mouth to apologize, she slams into you with a hug and starts bawling. You pat her on her head and hug her back, apologizing as much as you’re able to. The slight nausea from using your power flows away with the rest of the tension you’ve been feeling.

Suddenly you hear a voice shouting from above.

“What’s the fuck is happening now?!” It’s Craig! The sudden cut-off of electricity must have driven him outside! Other tenants are appearing as well, equally bothered by the outage. Thanks to the thick snow and night cover, Craig is unable to spot Joel running away. The other tenants swarm him with their complaints, making him unable to see you either. You turn off the Crimzone app while still hugging the crying girl.

“Sorry if you thought I left you alone there. I had a plan.” You try to calm her down. It’s working slowly… Why did he have to come here and ruin everything?!
She doesn’t seem able to respond, her breathing sore from sobbing so hard, but you finally hear her respond: “Thank you for not running…”
“It’s all my fault, you shouldn’t say that…” This time, it really is your fault…

Having calmed down, you can’t believe you controlled yourself so well. At the same time, you hear your phone’s alarm ringing. It’s time for you to go back to the clinic now… or is it?

What now?

>Go back with Ajna to her apartment and comfort her some more. You can always go back with your invisibility. You should call the others just in case.
>Call Craig, tell him what happened, and tell her to care of Ajna for you. The rest of the team is waiting for you at the clinic.

We still gotta be accountable to the team, even if we're not the leader or well-liked. We can explain stuff to them when we get there.
We can also explain to Craig what happened, and to be on the lookout for Joel. He's pretty dangerous right now. Following Joel will lead to trouble: we'd have to travel during curfew or knock him out, which could lead to us getting shot or killed some other way.

“Look Ajna, I have to go and help some people. I promise I’ll come back and we can talk some more.” Or well, you can talk some more and she can fidget.
She fidgets in response, as expected… then nods. Oh well.

You turn off your alarm then help Ajna back to her apartment. Craig was already waiting outside of it after getting rid of the other tenants. You explain what happened to Craig without naming any names, ask him to please take care of Ajna – and to warn the other tenants about the gunman. He doesn’t seem one bit happy about this…

“Next time I see this son of a bitch you’re talking about, I’m gonna tear his ribs out and beat him with them.” Craig is one funny guy! “…Why aren’t we callin’ the cops again? Ain’t this more their thing?”
“I mean if you wanna do it, do it. I don’t think they’ll bother helping us right now with the curfew and all.” Sucks how the cops feel so unreliable when it comes to things that are their job. Must be part of being in a dictatorship… “Just keep an eye out and tell the residents.”
“You sure it’s a good idea to go? Fuck, kid, take it easy. I might not look the part, but I know a thing or two about defending oneself.”

“I appreciate it Craig, but they need me over there more than I’m needed here.” You grab the bag with all the stuff Yu Yan asked for. It’s time for you to go. “I’ll see you two later.”
“T-t-t-take care!” Ajna, for some odd reason, seems to be taking a liking to you. Knowing her past experience with taking a liking to guys, you’re not sure how to feel about this.

And so, you started walking towards the clinic! It’s 10:05 PM, so you still have some minutes of leeway. The streets are completely deserted. No cars coming or going, and no sounds except the wind blowing, not even echoing down from blocks away. Without the loads of buildings everywhere, you couldn’t imagine there were millions living here in the city. Kinda spooky, but the snow takes some of it away. Man, you wanted to make a snowman with Ajna after the snow fight. Oh well.

You break into a steady run to try to make it there on time. You almost slip on unseen ice a couple times in the process, but it’s not stopping you!

“Partner, why did you contain yourself back there? I thought he was your great nemesis. The one who supposedly began all this suffering for you.” Philonune wonders out loud, with no malice or any ill motives. Only pure curiosity. “Why would you spare someone so vile, so willing to endanger others for his own gain?”
“Because I care more about my sister than I hate him.”
“I see…”

You arrive at the clinic no problem! Several meters away from the clinic, there is a snowman oddly similar to someone you know, but you can’t quite put your finger on it… Without thinking too long, you decided to kick his head off to make yourself feel better. Now you’re back inside, all nice and warm…

To your surprise, Matilda was about to open the door too! For some strange reason she resembles a sack of potatoes, or a sumo suit. Why is she wearing so many clothes on?

“Oh good, you’re here.” Roundtilda slowly turns away and wobbles towards the reception chairs. This whole front lobby section of the clinic seems almost completely empty, except for the silent receptionist. All the patients lounging and chatting about the news before are completely gone. “Help me remove these garments.”
“Sure… But why…?”
“I barely can maneuver around in these. That’s why.” A very grumpy Matilda grumbles at you, turning and T-posing.
“No, I mean – why are you wearing all that?” You can’t think of much else to say about it.
“Because I was supposed to go and retrieve you safely. It was cold outside, far more than I anticipated. Uccelli and Dr. Calamity were worried about me freezing, but you know those women don’t know the word ‘restrain’. I know the teacher was doing it out of the kindness of her heart, but that other woman – she was enjoying it.” Matilda’s silent rage is kind of funny. “Now help me get these off.”

This is the second time you see a girl undress in front of you, and this time it isn’t sexy at all. Matilda glares at you the entire time, but looks away whenever you lock eyes with her.

“How were you supposed to go get me, if you can barely move?”
“Don’t underestimate me. I can still run weighted down. It’s a simple 5 minute haul.” Matilda explains, brushing off her clothes. “More importantly, their priority was to have someone alongside you more than actually retrieving you.”
“So they weren’t counting on me to even come back…?” They expected you to ditch everyone? Just like that?
“She thought we could sneak in here when the city-wide Crimzone activates. They still rely on you. The reality is Uccelli is being too permissive with you after what happened. If I were in charge, I would have confined you here weeks ago.”

“I know it would have been dangerous, so thanks for willing to do this for me.”
“I’m going to be compensated for my efforts regardless.” Matilda’s eyes glitter at the mention of ‘compensation.’ How much money are they paying her for you…? “Either way, you’re welcome.”
“So… Where are the others?” There’s only the three of you here in the lobby, and down the halls you can see from where you are, there’s nothing.
“Anyone flame-related is down here.” Oh yeah, the panic bunker.

What do you do?

“I need your assistance, Johnny.” Matilda is still struggling to get off her second jacket. Her arms fall too short to do anything.
You get closer trying to figure out how to help her out of the pile. “You look so huggable.” You decided to hug her since she looks the part of a giant plushy. “Thank you for everything.” You don’t feel too happy nowadays, but it makes feel you happy hugging her. An extremely flustered Matilda starts to flail her arms around in her T-pose. When she notices you’re not putting too much strength into it or something, she stops flailing… God knows what made her stop.
“What’s gotten into you? Are you tired again? Or something on your trip went wrong…?” A worried Matilda is trying to pat you on the back for some reason you can’t tell, but her T-posing is too powerful to overcome the overcoats.
“Nah, I just don’t think I’ll ever have the chance to do this again – with you wearing this, I mean.”
“For future reference, I ask only 20 Gor$ per hug. 30 plus if you want me to dress up, if you provide the costume, and if I approve of it.” Matilda’s monotone audibly wavers as she speaks. Even then, that’s way too much money…! “A normal comforting hug for a generous business associate, however, is free of charge.”

With this strange new change in direction, you decide to stop hugging her and help her for once.

“Sorry, now I’ll help. So what happened to the Stewie guy?” The coats start to fall away one by one…
“Stewie? You mean Howie Dewitt? Right, Trent Figg mentioned he saw you on his way here. Well, we interrogated Howie and got the information we needed, then Trent left with him to dispose of him somewhere else.” Matilda briefly recaps for you without going into details. Part of you really loves the sound of that ‘dispose of him’ bit… You try to get the final few jackets off, but you two are having a hard time. In a couple minutes, Matilda is finally freed!

“I’m going to need a shower…” Matilda is coated in sweat all over her, making her skin glisten and shine. You notice her toned abs and muscles, the fact all she has on is a sports bra and shorts, that cute haircut of hers… and her noticing you noticing her! Unexpectedly, Matilda doesn’t appear irritated at all – almost curious.

“Ehm… Which room is Uccelli in anyway? I need to let her know I’m here.”
“Room 602.” Matilda sighs. Probably tired from wearing all those clothes…
“Could you do me a favor and take this stuff to Yu Yan, please?” You hand her the bag full of clothes and other items.
“5 bucks.”
“Here you go.” You hand her the money too.
Matilda counts the bills then shoves them in a pocket. The look she’s giving you now is one you’ve only ever seen Nina give you. “A pleasure doing business with you, as always. I’ll show you the way free of charge.” She leads the way and you follow.

Matilda accompanies you to the sub-basement panic bunker, guiding you to the door. You open the door without hesitation, completely forgetting about knocking, while Matilda leaves to go wherever.

Inside, the room layout is no different from a regular hospital room, except for the table in one of the corners where your ex-girlfriend is seated in a regular plastic chair, working. It has a laptop on it, a bunch of papers you can’t read from here, some scattered pens and other stuff, and two energy drinks, one of them sealed. On the wall above her, a board with a full-size Pokyo Lokyo map and various pinned notes tied together by string – all of them are flame related from what you see. Under the table, there is a small trash bin overflowing with candy wrappers and other trash.

Uccelli turns around and sees you, giving a surprised smile! “J-Johnny!” She mumbles in between bites of a chocolate bar. “You’re back!”
“Heyo, I came here to let you know I’m here. And yeah, I’m here.” The moment you start laughing, so does Nina. You missed this. “What’s up with this place?”
“It’s my impromptu office. Calamity gave me permission to use it…” Nina is a bit ashamed; she starts to clean up some of the stuff on her table, mostly the garbage. Her sweet tooth is getting the best of her out of stress. “Please sit! Sorry about the mess! There is so much we need to go over…” She points to the empty mattress.

“Yeah, we do…” She doesn’t know the half of it…

“First, how was your alone time? Must have been nice to enjoy the snow.” Nina can’t hide the glee in her voice!
“It went great, but there’s a twist to all this. Can you keep this between us…?” Once she nods, you explain to her what happened start to finish, including the part about Amelia’s dad going batshit insane. Nina’s face changes from small embarrassment over her unkempt room, to extreme distress for you. She stands up with the intention of comforting you, but ends up tripping on her chair and almost falling. You barely catch her in time, then you guide her next to you on the ‘bed.’

“I’m s-sorry…” Damn, she looks so cute when she’s embarrassed, blushing all over.

“You need to look before you walk; it’s not the first time this happened, you know?” You smile at her.
“T-that doesn’t matter now. Johnny. C’mere…” She hugs you close and starts caressing the back of your head. It feels so nice. “It’s alright now…”
“Nina, I’m fine…” Whatever happens, you always get through it. This is nothing. This is the same as always. “There’s more important stuff to talk about.”

Nina puts her hands on your shoulders and gently pulls you away from her. “Johnny, you’re not fine. You haven’t been fine, and I seriously doubt you’ve ever been fine. You’ve been pretending otherwise for… who knows how long?” She’s staring in your eyes with a sad determination she never had before last week. It’s the sad part that gets to you. “What you’ve been going through isn’t as easy to overcome in just a five minute walk. If there is ever a moment you can vent your frustrations, that’s now. I’m here for you, and I’m going to always be. So trust me, please…”

The hug goes on for a while in complete silence, covering the room and everything in it.

Yu Yan’s hug picked you up from the abyss of betrayal.
Ajna’s was just another one seeking comfort, like many of the ones you had before.
Matilda’s was for childish fun on a whim.
Nina’s is the one giving the comfort you seek right now. It’s a completely different feel in one sense from the others, and the same one in another… The feeling of companionship, the feeling that you won’t be left alone.

You wonder if Trent would have accepted a hug from you. He would most likely punch the shit out of you.

You wonder if Constance can take a good hug in her state. You don’t want to break her or anything.

You wonder if your sister wants to be hugged like this again. Even in the end, you aren’t able to hate her or hold any ill will towards her. Is this what she feels towards that bastard of a father she has…?

Strangely, that means part of her comes from your mom, just like you. If so, then what did they pass onto you, Johnny?

Somehow your head ended up on Nina’s lap. She’s caressing your hair with a delicacy only love can give.

“Feeling better…?” Nina smiles down at you, continuing to pamper you.
“With this view? Of course I am.” You smirk fearlessly back at her. Nina pouts, grabs your trademark lock of hair, and pulls it gently. “Hey hey, easy!”
“Never losing that sense of humor of yours, huh? It’s getting pretty late… I still need to double-check some things.” She moves your head away and goes back to her table. “I know it’s late, but come back in an hour and I’ll catch you up to speed with what I need you to do. Don’t worry, it’s no different than just being here helping everyone like always. If you are feeling anxious, you can go talk to Neko or Richard for all the details.”

“Sure, I have things to do.” Not like you’re a fan of talking to either after what they pulled. “I’ll see ya later, Nina!”
“Take it easy!” Nina has a beautiful smile you want to protect. All her hard efforts are for everyone to survive what’s to come in a few hours. You can’t let her down!

Enough of crying like a little bitch for the day! You finally leave the room, but you have no idea where Amelia is in this creepy basement bunker… So you decide to head for the room with the jail cell, because you remember where it is from here.

You reach the room without getting lost, finding no one in the halls. This time you also refuse to knock on the door, choosing to peek past it instead.

The inside of the dark room is the same as you remember leaving it hours ago, with your little sister included. Amelia is sitting dead center of the cage, meditating away from the door.

How will you approach this?

>“Amelia, is that you in there? That is you, right?”

“Amelia, is that you in there?” You ask slowly as you carefully enter the room. “That is you, right?” You ask yet again, as if it wasn’t enough the first time.

The Amelia in front of you twitches for a second, and quickly stands up.

“No! I’m not Amelia! I’m the Goddess of Knowledge: Saraswati!” Saraswati explains with the usual grandeur and over-the-topness befitting a genuine goddess. Is over-the-topness even a word? Either way, the once-little spirit bear is still puppeting your sister’s body.
“That’s hugely disappointing.” You aren’t going to hide it. It kinda sucks ass.
“You have a one-in-a-billion chance to talk to someone like yours truly, someone who knows more than your mortal brain could possibly hope to learn in one measly human lifetime, and your response is disappointment?! How preposterous!” She folds her arms and bares her teeth exactly like a bear. It’s more adorable than threatening.

“Sorry, not in the mood to argue or anything like that.” Hopefully your apology comes across as sincere, because it is! This time, it definitely is! “How is my sister doing?”
“What answer do you expect from me, child?”
“Bad.”
“Hope hasn’t killed any man in history, unlike the evils it was confined with.” Is that supposed to mean something?

“You saw it all. You know why I feel like this.”
“This is why I once again apologize to you. If my teachings were up to the standards I proclaim to uphold – well, things wouldn’t have gone this way. Despite what others of my kind may believe, even those of us with power are not immune to mistakes. I’ve seen it happen many times before.” Saramelia’s face looks regretful to the point of traumatized, something you never expected from her. Remembering something that happened to another god, maybe? “I don’t think anyone is truly blameless in this situation. One way or another, everyone’s stained with fault.”
“And you’re right.” You concede, nothing to prove to anyone. “But what you have been doing this whole time?”

“Well, having colorful conversations with my apprentice. Trying to soothe her mind. It’s no easy task, as you might have deduced…” Saramelia looks tired and worried. “If I don’t find a way to calm her down soon, I might have to fight alone alongside you tomorrow.”

That’s not good. Can she even use her weather powers while in control of the body?

“I doubt that’s possible, Johnny. I could be wrong and we might still have her powers at our disposal tomorrow, or not.” Philonune chimes in, responding to your internal question. “Then again, I have no desire to test the same on you to find out.” Philo’s laugh makes you feel a bit better here. You’re still faced with a tough issue though.

“Let’s not exaggerate, you were never in any danger of dying – but yes, I couldn’t control myself, same as any other entity refusing to assume control over their partner.” Saramelia explains. “I was but a mere adviser until now. A rather impressive one, if I do say so myself!”
You are not impressed one bit. “So is there any way I can talk to her without you giving up control?”
“Yes, it’s rather easy. It’s a method you yourself have used multiple times now!” Saramelia smiles confidently. “The little Judge Constance has the ability to bring together multiple people in the Distant Frontier, yes?”

“What’s the Distant Frontier again?” You can’t help shrugging. Yeah, that’s the name of the dream world, but why is it even called that?
“Distant Frontier is a dream-like place where you humans and our kind are able to communicate.”
“I thought that was the Bridge between Worlds.”
“The Bridge appears when you are making a contract with an entity, hence the name.”

“I’m not sure about that. Wasn’t the Distant Frontier part of the Bridge between Worlds?”
“You’re wrong. The two, despite being similar in appearance, are wholly unrelated in usage.”
“Fine, whatever… Should I bring Constance here or get you out of there?”
“Do you have the key?” Saramelia gives you a knowing look. Now you’re starting to disappoint her…
“…I’ll be going then.”

After spending a good chunk of minutes trying to find Constance’s room, you gave up and went back to the reception desk to ask the person there. Thankfully, you found Kata on your way and she gave the directions you needed.

You were able to find Constance in her room, sleeping adorably with Lise, both still sitting with a book on their lap. Judging by the lack of a wheelchair in the room, Lise must be able to walk again.

Are you the type of monster who would disturb a scene like this?

>Yes, wake them up! They know to be prepared for anything; this is a war!
>No, don’t wake them up! That’s rude! Leave this Amelia business to later.
>Third option! Attempt to only wake Constance up and take her to Amelia.
>Write In.

You cheekily take your phone out and snap a photo of this lovely scenery. They will appreciate it for sure once they wake up! Now you decide to wake them up as gently as the breeze outside.

“Hey, how is it going?”
“Hey Johnny…” Constance is struggling to wake up, but she’s happy to see you.
“Thanks for not busting the door down and yelling at us…” Lise says that like she has firsthand experience with people doing that to her. Family issues? “Did something bad happen?”
“Before we get into that, take a look at this.” You show them the picture of them sleeping. “You two look adorable.

Lise sits up instantly and lunges for your phone. “Whaaaaaaat?! Gimme that shit, you…!” You move away from Lise, forcing her to stand up to reach you. Wait, that’s not a pajama! Those are super short shorts!
“Calm down, I thought you would like it!” You back further away from Lise as she rolls up her sleeve, blushing like mad.
“So what? I don’t, and I don’t want you to have it! It leaves a bad precedent, and that shit won’t fly!”

I like it!” Constance is full of optimism as the two of you struggle. “Can we frame it? Please?” Constance is now asking for the impossible. Will it be enough?

“Ugh… Fiiiiiiiine.” Lise gave up! Nice! “Hey! Behind you!” The fuck?! Who’s behind you? Wait, there’s nothing there! “There, now I have a picture of you looking like an idiot too!” She waves her phone in your face, smug enough for Yu Yan to approve of. Maybe.
“Wait, you don’t look like an idiot in…” You double-check the picture you took. Lise is drooling down the side of her mouth. “Oh… Now I get it.” Another reason for you to keep it!
“Hey!” Constance grabs your attention. The little mummy has a phone of her own, and she’s using it to take pictures of both of you! “Hehehe!” She smiling now.
Lise gives you an ‘are you fucking serious?’ look. “Great, look what you did. Now I have to deal with this from now on.”
“Fine. Whatever. My bad.”

“So what’s up? You wouldn’t be stopping by here if you didn’t want something.” Lise crosses her legs, letting you see both of them covered in bandages from the knees down, with her flame still on her ass. How you are able to see hers but not Constance’s? Just one more suspiciously overpowered quirk Judge flames have over regular flames in this war game? Food for thought…

“I need Constance for a moment. Wanted to talk to Amelia without being mauled to death.”
“I heard. You okay?”
“I’m…” Not quite yet, Johnny. Little by little… “I’m getting there.”
“Is it that bad that I don’t believe you?”
“Not really. No one does anymore.”
“Crap…” Lise is awful at comforting people! She picks up Constance, who has been watching and listening intently the whole time, and carries her in her arms. “L-let’s not waste any more time. I’ll go with you. Better safe than sorry.”

And this new small party goes to meet with Saramelia. Inside the dimly-lit room, Constance sits on a chair and grabs you and your sister’s hands. Pretty close to what you did with Richard when you met with Neko the first time around. Remembering what you instructed Bradford about the last dreamworld meeting, you tell Lise the same thing – wake all of you up the moment things start to look wrong on the outside.

“Before we go, are you two sure this is a good idea?” Lise asks both you and Saraswati.
“We have nothing to lose.” You shrug. Not many ways this can turn out good, but oh well.
“I believe in my apprentice. I trust what I’ve taught her.” Saraswati says with calm determination.

Now you’re transported to the Distant Frontier. In this empty, dismal void of a world, you’re finally able to see your sister… Amelia’s sitting on the invisible floor in fetal position, looking up at you. It hurts to see her like this, but you have no choice…
