Howdy all, and welcome to “A Song of Duty and Spite; House Reynold Quest”. Here we play as Ser Mervyn Reynold, a lowborn son of a bastard hedge knight who, through his skill at arms and a bit of luck, has married into the noble House Reynold of Ember Peak. He currently serves as Lady Elleanor Reynold’s sword shield, and in the murky depths of in-house politics he will attempt to rise high despite coming from such humble origins. These waters are treacherous however. Lady Elleanor has not forgotten her once betrothed, the late Reynard Reyne, and while she attempts to keep control of her house, her husband Lord Titus has the backing of Lord Tywin himself, and has a strong influence over the Reynold Military. The Mad King grows more and more erratic, and there are rumours that the relationship between Lord Tywin and King Aerys grow strained. Will you remain Lady Elleanors right hand, or will you strike out on your own in your pursuit of position and power? Let get stuck in and find out!!

Dramatis Personae:
>Ser Mervyn Reynold, 25, Our MC.
Ser Mervyn grew up the son of a bastard hedge knight who did not know his father and a blacksmiths daughter. After his mother passed at the age of 5, his father began travelling the westerlands to sell his sword to anyone who would hire him. Eventually, the man passed away to a pox when Mervyn was 17, but not before knighting his son. He than took his fathers horse and mule and travelled in the same way. Eventually, he heard of a tourney for a young maiden’s hand, he attended and won handily over many much nobler knights. He now serves the Lady of the House, Elleanor Reynold as her sworn shield.

>Alyssa Reynold, 17, Mervyn’s Wife
Alyssa is a pretty young girl who is currently 6 and a half months pregnant. She is driven and tenacious, if not impatient, and she has been reared to be a player in the game by her mother. While not considered beautiful as her elder sister might be, her red curls and sea green eyes certainly make her comely. She is gifted at weaving through the art of noble intrigue and has a knack for remembering heraldry and house history.

>Lord Titus Reynold, 46
Lord Titus was born Titus Lantell of Lannisport, and grew up to be a knight who swore his sword to the Lannisters. During the Reyne/Tarbeck Rebellion, he was commanded by Tywin Lannister to march with 300 men to confine the Lady Elleanor, then a maiden of 16 years, and prevent House Reynold from aiding the Reynes and Tarbecks in rebellion as a favour to her father, the late Lord Marqus. A relatively oafish man who cares not for the workings of his house, he is not without a degree of cunning and ultimately seeks to usurp his wife as the true head of the house.

>Lady Elleanor Reynold, 36
Lady Elleanor is a woman who remembers. Once betrothed to Ser Reynard Reyne, she endured losing both her father and betrothed in the span of a year at the age of 16, and was subsequently married off to a lowly knight of Lannisport. She endured the dishonour, even providing 6 children to her husband, all in the memory of her father and Reynard. She is the true power in Ember Peak, and seeks to retain control of her house by any means necessary.

--- 07/04/281 ---

You had left Hornvale and were travelling at the head of a column of men and wagons, alongside Lord Andros and his eldest son and squire, the 17 year old Tytos. Spring was upon the land, and the melt was in full swing and you heard the babble of small brooks and the crash of small waterfalls throughout the mountains. The sun shone down upon you, and although the mountain wind was still brisk, it appeared winter was at it’s end at last. The Brax household was travelling in force, bringing with them with no less than 100 heavily armed infantry and 20 mounted knights. Talk amongst the men was of the tournament and wedding, and so naturally the talk amongst the nobility was no different.

“I’m sure that Tytos here is up to the task. Look at him, just like his father. A natural warrior, and not to mention he has the advantage of age.” Lord Andros was speaking of the squires melee, and as he did, you saw his son smile at the prospect of earning his knighthood, and possibly the praise from his father. “Favours the longsword and shield he does, as should any nobleman. I cannot imagine there being a squire who can get the better of him.” Lord Brax barked out a laugh at this, and you hear a feminine voice come from behind you. “And who exactly will be giving out this knighthood?”. Lady Cerelle Brax had ridden up from her place at the column and accusation was in her voice. “Surely a knighthood would be given from someone of noble birth…”. She lets the accusation hang heavy in the air before turning her nose up at you and riding ahead to be beside her husband as she reins in close to him. Lord Andros looks at you before voicing his own opinion. “My wife speaks true Ser. And while I do not doubt the worthiness of your sword arm, or that of Ser Terrence, a former hedge knight and lowly Lantell do not a prestigious knighthood make. I certainly hope Titus and Elleanor have someone a bit more prestigious to sponsor the tournament.” You were left wordless. Your lady hadn’t mentioned anything about who would be giving said knighthood, and besides, in your mind, a knighthood was a knighthood, it mattered not who gave it, or under what circumstances. Lady Cerelle distracts her husband with a conversation you aren’t privy to, and in turn wheel your horse around and spy Tygons bride to be, the Lady Andrea riding up the column herself, and she greets you politely. “Good day Ser. Please forgive my mothers manners, I’m sure whatever it was she said to you was far from courteous. She grew up in Casterly Rock and, well, she has the temperament to match.”

You found yourself at a loss for words to hear someone speak ill of such a powerful noblewoman, especially coming from her own daughter. Lady Andrea notices your facial expression and she smiles and shakes her head prettily. “You must forgive me Ser, every child has their complaints about their parents. I promise you I won’t go running to my mother if you agree with me.” You ride on in silence for a moment, before giving her a curt response saying that it wasn’t your place to critique your betters. This brings another laugh from her, and you notice how intelligent her amber brown eyes appear to notice your every movement. “You really are low born aren’t you Ser Mervyn? I mean no offense, only that while you speak passably well, your lack of social graces speak louder than your words do.” She watches you for a reaction before continuing on. “Noble lords and ladies, they have a distinctive…class. I’m sure you’ve noticed that nearly everything they do is different to smallfolk. My advice Ser, if I may not be too bold, would be to focus on learning how to act like a nobleman. It takes far more than just a name to be a noble, and if I am to be your sister in law, I would be remiss in my duties if I did not offer to help you in this matter.” She cocks her head and purses her lips in thought. “Perhaps once I meet your wife, we could both begin to teach you some more of the social protocols. I fear whoever has been in charge of this has been a bit remiss in their duties.”

You stew on this momentarily. In truth, little had been done to instruct you in the ways of intrigue. You suppose that would be your wifes responsibility, but Allysa had been pregnant for the past 6 months, in addition to you focusing on other more martial tasks. “Thank you my lady, but I fear my wifes condition has affected her ability to instruct. And teaching such things to me would be beneath the Lady of the house.” Andrea looks abashed by this before insisting “Please Ser Mervyn, do not mistake my words as criticism. I understand that your wife is with child, I can only pray to the mother that I may soon be in the same condition. I simply meant that perhaps together, your wife and I could teach you as sisters, and s a way for new sisters to bond, and in doing so you might stand to benefit from it as well. And speaking of your family, I was wondering if perhaps you might tell me of my betrothed? I must confess, I know little of him. Only what I’ve managed to learn from gossip and what my mother and father have told me. But I put little stock in rumors, and you seem like a terribly honest sort of man.” She laughs in polite, silence breaking way before looking at you expectantly with a polite smile on her face.

You pondered for a short moment before beginning, giving her your honest opinion of her soon to be husband. “Tygon? Well he is comely enough to be sure. His hair is straight, and of a light sand colouring and his eyes are bright and lively, and hazel in colour. Not to different from your own my lady.” This brings a smile to her face and she comments “How typical of a man that you might describe how he looks” in a teasing tone. She was enjoying tormenting you, and there was a slight tone of flirtation in her voice. It was something you had grown used to as women had begun to talk to you in such a way since you had been one and four and you ignored it. “Tell me of his character Ser, tell me about his nature and his bearing.”

“Well…” you begin slowly, not wanting to make the young lordling seem undesirable. “He is a bright young man to put it simply. The two of you are of an age, and everyone who meets him looks to call him friend. He has a gift of befriending people. As a matter of fact, I’d say it may be his most prominent trait. Not to mention he is intelligent and studious, and one day will make for an excellent commander…” You trail off slightly at the leaning of talking of war and more martial pursuits. Lady Andrea picks up on this and inquires further though. “My lady, Tygon is…not the most martial of men. At the age of one and nine he stands unknighted, and he is at best an average swordsman. He has some small skill with a bow, but in matters of war he is much more suited to commanding men than fighting with them. Although, I can say with certainty that I would follow him into battle.”

The two of you continue to ride and you feel the sun break free of a clouds momentary blockade and feel a wash of warmth over you. “Does he have any noble hobbies? I dearly hope he enjoys hunting. Hawking in particular is a favourite of mine.” She gestures towards the grey fur she wears above her shoulders. “My golden eagle and I took this very fox only 2 months ago as a matter of fact, and I know not if you’ve had the pleasure of hawking Ser Mervyn, but foxes are no easy quarry.” “I’ve not had the pleasure Lady Andrea, but I’ll take you at your word for it. I’ve little and less experience at hunting, aside from the skin around my own shoulders.” She asks after the beautiful cloak and you regale Andrea with tales of the hunt, and she gasps and feigns horror when you told her of how you had fallen from your horse and had two large wolves surrounding you. You swing the conversation back to the matter at hand, as heavy handed and forced as it seemed. “Anyways my lady, Tygon himself is known to hunt on occasion. Perhaps not such fearsome prey as wolves, but deer and the like frequently fall to his arrows. He is also rather fond military strategy, and according to my wife Alyssa, he is a remarkable dancer.”

Andrea cocks an eyebrow at the mention of dancing, and a wry smile appears on her face.

Haha Andrea is definitely a flirt, but theres nothing to worry about. She's probably a virgin.

Anyhow, off the Ember Peak we go.
>>
You continued on through the mountains that dominate the eastern part of the Westerlands without incident. Perhaps it was the 100 or so heavy infantry that accompanied you, or something else entirely but within the week you you could see the hill that led towards Ember Peak properly. You pass by the Sleeping Lion, and cross the bridge and upon the crest of the hill towards the castle you saw a flood of colours, as lords and ladies had constructed their pavilions in a kaleidoscope of colours. From this distance you saw nothing but colours, closing your left eye to try and focus on the banners ahead. Your long distance vision wasn't the clearest, but as you approached you began to notice all kinds of sigils, most of which meant little and less to you.

You saw a red crab on purple and yellow, a brindled boar, blue beetles and what looked like a badger or wolverine.. A red spider on black was next to a golden tree, and various other banners waved in the wind. Most importantly of all, you saw the golden lion of Lannister, waving proudly above even the red eagle of your own house. The gravity of this was obvious to even your own unpolitical mind. As your party kept climbing, your thoughts went to Lady Elleanor and the part of her own history that she had told you. Her distaste of her liege lords family was well known in Ember Peak.

You ride through the castle gates and take your horse to the stables and hand him off to a stablehand who takes him to be rubbed down and fed, and as Tyrus follow you in, you reached into his saddlebag and pulls the ruby forth, still wrapped in a peice of cloth and stowed it on your person.

You bid the Brax's a good day, ensuring to see them at the feast that was being held to honour their arrival and made your way into the castle proper.

You ask a servant in passing the whereabouts of Lady Elleanor, and soon head with purpose to her personal chambers. As you walk down the halls, you can feel the ruby pressed against your skin, and your mind wanders to your wife. You shake your head to try and get the thoughts of her out, although they persist anyways. The last thing she needed right now was to be involved in whatever plot or scheme you had found yourself in considering her position, and so despite the help her opinion might offer, you decide against it. You come across Elleanors chambers and knock firmly on the door three times. You hear a muffled voice through the thick oaken door, telling you she was not to be disturbed.

“My lady, I’ve returned from Hornvale and there are some things you need to be informed of.” Silence fills the air and soon you hear the thunk of a heavy bolt being opened and the door swings open and you see the lady of the house in what is clearly a state of irritation. “Come in than, Ser Mervyn.” She says shortly, and she closes the door with unnecessary force once you enter before locking the door again. “Sit.” She orders you, gesturing towards the table and walking herself to a side table where she pours two goblets of wine. She walks over and places one in front of you, before taking her own seat. “Tell me Ser Mervyn, what happened that is so pressing” she says impatiently.

You inform her of the events that had transpired. From Ser Terrences insistence on command, to the meeting with Lord Andros and all that had followed. She looks at you with disinterest, her mind clearly on matters closer to home, before you mention that you had found something. This brings back her attention and her eyes dart to the small item you removed from your small pocket. You unwrapped the ruby and her eyes focus on it with an intensity you had yet to see from her. You even notice her pupils dilate, and a slight twitch in her eyes give away that she knows something. She takes the uncut ruby from the table and examines it further, before asking for every detail regarding it you could imagine. The exact place you found it, who knew you had it, and all manner of other questions. Her eyes regard you so intently, you could swear she hadn’t blinked since she had seen the stone. When she finishes questioning you, she pauses for a moment before starting in a serious tone.

“Listen to me Ser Mervyn, and listen to me carefully. Nobody is to know of this. Not a soul. I will inform Tyrus that he is to take this to his grave. After this wedding, you will be going to Lannisport for me. Assuming I survive hosting Lannisters in my home.” She goes off on a tangent with vitriol. “Naturally I had to extend an invitation to Casterly Rock, but it appears Titus has sent one to both his family and the Lannisters of Lannisport. So now not only must I play host to the Sers Tygett and Gerion, I now have Lord Tyler, his wife and two sons as well.” She raps her fingers on the table before resuming her original conversation. “When this farce is over and done with, I will have need of you to go to Lannisport. I will explain more when I have time, but as for right now, I need you to forget that this exists, and focus on the wedding. Make merry and celebrate. Focus on the tourney ahead. When all of this is done with, I shall explain it to you, but there is no time, and there are far to many people who wish to see Titus gain control of this house to discuss such things at the moment. Now, seeing as you’re here, you may attend me. Titus is currently meeting with the Lannisters as we speak, and I don’t want him alone with them for to long.” She rises and makes for the door, stopping at her mirror to casually sweeps a few loose strands of her red hair back behind her ear and you get up to follow her.

Alright, loyal shield it is. Lets go meet some Lannisters!!
>>
You follow her to what served as the castles solar and opened the door for her as was befitting your station. As you entered yourself, you were faced with Lord Titus laughing with 5 golden haired, emerald eyes Lannisters. Titus rises for his wife, playing the dutiful husband. “My Lords, and Lady, may I introduce my wife, the Lady of Ember Peak, Elleanor Reynold. And accompanying her is her sworn shield and my son in law, Ser Mervyn Reynold.” The party of Lannisters rises to meet you, and Lord Titus continues. I assume there is no need to introduce Ser Tygett or Ser Gerion. The former bows slightly to Lady Elleanor before crossing his arms and nodding his head slightly to you, and your instincts told you he was a formidable warrior, meanwhile Gerion bows with a smile. “My lady, Ser, it is a please to be hosted by you. My brother Jason sends his regrets as his duties as Castellan of the rock keep him busy in our eldest brothers absence.” Lady Elleanor bows politely and Titus introduces the remaining Lannisters. “And I also have the pleasure to introduce Lord Tyler Lannister, Lord of Lannisport and his wife Lady Anette Lannister, along with their son Leroy.

You scanned the remaining three, and figured Lord Tyler was likely of an age with Titus, and his son was close to an age with you. The way he idly toyed with the dagger at his belt told you he was both bored and a warrior, similar to Tygett. You pulled out Lady Elleanors chair and she sat, and you retreated to a small alcove behind her as talks began.

Titus begins the talks, bringing his wife up to speed. The Lannisters of Lannisport were seeking a marriage arrangement for their son. Specifically with Joanna, your wifes elder sister. “We understand that the competition for such a beautiful lady’s hand must be fierce, and as such, we would be happy to accept half of what a proper dowry for a lady of her status should be. An even thousand dragons. I’m sure the dowry for Lady Brax was twice that. And while we may be of Lannisport, not the Rock, there is still considerable wealth and trade to be had from such an arrangement.” Says Lord Tyler in a matter of fact way. Titus looks to Elleanor with a proud smile, suggesting that such talks should not be taken lightly. And while you couldn’t see your lady’s face from where you stood, you saw her posture stiffen and based on the tone of her response, she detested the idea.

“My Lord and Lady, while I thank you for such a generous offer, there are many considerations to be had here. My Lord husband and I will have to discuss it at length before I can agree with anything in good faith.” She says this with an icy coldness that causes the smiles in the room to disappear, and talks go on regarding other matters of fealty and the like. The talks continue and you try to absorb as much information as you could, and eventually you are dismissed as the meeting comes to a close.
>>
Ser Tygett in particular shows an interest in you as you were leaving, and follows you, engaging in conversation.

"Ser. If I may, I've heard that you are a knight of considerable skill. If I may, how did a low, baseborn son of a bastard manage to learn to fight in such a way as to earn a reputation such as yours and to win the hand of a highborn girl?"

You'd come across men like this before. They didn't care for you. You were simply so far below them they couldn't be bothered to despise you. How you came across your skill was a curiosity, as few hedge knights could say they fought even half as well as you.

"Well Ser Tycatt, when you learn from someone who has had to fight for his entire life, you learn how to win. And when you've had to fight lords and knights born with a stick up their asses your entire life, you learn that alot of them become predictable. They're all taught the same moves, and once you knock a few lordlings off their horses, they find out they look no different covered in mud and shit than the lowborn men they themselves shit upon."

"Ser Ty-Gett" the man repeats slowly, emphasizing how to pronounce his name. He walks with the gait of a natural horseman, and he stares at you with his lip curled in distaste. "Perhaps Ser. I look forward to seeing you amongst the lists. I must say that I've met more than a few men like you, and you're all as common as the Hills that dot the west. I've yet to meet the man who can match me at the joust, let alone one lowborn. Good day Ser."

The man turns on his heels and makes his way in the opposite direction, and ou hear his quick steps echoing down the stone halls.

It was mid morning, and you and your now heavily pregnant wife had accompanied the rest of the noble party up a small path to a cliff with a gorgeous view over the Westerlands, down into the valleys to the south. Your wife had picked out your best clothing, and she herself was dressed in her absolute finest that would accommodate her growing stomach and breasts.

The Lannisters had brought with them a septon from the sept in Lannisport, and he stood ahead of the couple who were being wed before your eyes. Tygon had stood beside the septon in the noble grey and yellow of his house, with touches of red about his clothing.

Lord Andros had walked Andrea to Tygon and the septon, and you could see her brides cloak was a rich white, along with the purple unicorn sewn in detail, the cost of the fabric was far beyond your comprehension. Underneath the cloak she wore a dress of ivory silk and samite, and the sun glinted off her amber eyes. Her hair was done up in the current fashions, and when she had laid eyes on Tygon, she had smiled ear to ear. The young heir to Ember Peak had smiled back in return. Your wife takes your arm and puts some of her weight on you which you bear with ease, and gaze about amongst the nobles that surround you. You see Titus and Elleanor, surrounded by all the rest of their children. Both of their fostered children had returned home to see their eldest brother wed. Elyse Reynold was 15 and the only one of their brood to have brown hair. It was a rich chestnut brown, and it provided a dark backdrop to highlight her own green eyes. James on the other hand was only 10, and looked like a male version of his mother, red haired and green eyed. Tyrus stood by them as well, looking bored as he toyed with a rock by his foot.

Tygon removes Andrea's bride cloak with a flourish, and replaces it with a grey one of the finest grey wool, complete with the sigil of House Reynold embroidered into it, and the Septon begins the prayers.

"By the Father, Tygon you are charged with ensuring good judgement inside your marriage.

By the Mother, Andrea you are charged with ensuring that the marriage is bountiful, and abound with children.

By the Warrior, Tygon..."

The ceremony continues, and culminates in a long kiss between the now married couple and a raucous cheer goes up from the crowd. Now you begin to exit and head down to the yard where the squires melee was being held. It was to be the opener to the tournament, and was to take place this afternoon before the wedding feast. Tyrus was soon by your side, and you looked over to him and nodded stoically as you made your way down the hill.

Lol. Tygett is a pretty damn good jouster. It's not going to be an easy feat to put him in his place. But he is a sorely cunt to be sure.

And I have to be up in just over 4 hours, so I'm going to grab some sleep here and I'll be back tomorrow night to start at the same time. We'll be getting to see the world through young Tyrus' eyes when we come back as we compete in the squires melee searching for glory.

Chapter 4.1

{Tyrus}

--- 08/04/281 ---
The day was finally here. Your first melee. Your stomach felt as if Ser Mervyn had driven his mace into it, and you couldnt stay still no matter how hard you tried. The wedding ceremony had seemed to have taken over a year, and when it had finally concluded, your voice had joined in the others when your elder brother and his new wife were officially married, but for different reasons.

You had chased down Ser Mervyn who was escorting your sister Allysa back down the mountain towards Ember Peak, and you accompanied the two of them as patiently as you could manage. He seemed an entirely different man around your sister, his wife. He was almost soft somehow and there was a tenderness to him that vanished entirely when combat approached. He lacked that with you. Not to say he was always harsh, but he was never soft. He was a stern teacher, and many times hed beaten you in the training yard black and blue with bruises, and there were times he had outright scared you. Just over a month ago he'd taunted you after beating you soundly and your rage got the better of you, and before you know what was happening, you were flat on your back with a dirk to your throat. So whatever softness he might show to Allysa, you knew that there was cold iron underneath. You'd seen it with your own eyes just over a week ago. He had moved through the bandits in that old mine as tirelessly as the tide, and as the tide batters the shore, so too did Ser Mervyn batter his enemies. Most vividly you recalled how he had cut the mans throat with any hesitation in the slightest. He had become both the Warrior and the Stranger at the same time in your eyes and wherever he had gone that day, death followed. You had slain your first man that day as well, although the events of it were hazy. Everything had gone red, and you remembered slashing wildly with your sword like a butcher carving meat and someone had dragged you off of the corpse. When you came out of your haze, you had felt sick and emptied the contents of your stomach. You could still vividly taste the bile as you relived through the memory in your head and remembered how Sers Mervyn and Jeremy had laughed, commenting about their own first kills.

The pair of you had entered the armory together after you had bid Allysa goodbye, and she had ruffled your hair and wished you luck. You had watched her go as she waddled away, thinking to yourself how you would soon be an uncle.

Ser Mervyn command you to stand, and he squires for you and helps you into your armour. "Remember what I've taught you Tyrus" Ser Mervyn began. "Eliminate one or two at the start, show the rest of them you have claws and then stick to the outskirts. Let the fools battle themselves out and you can sweep them at the end. Manage your anger, squire, and you may just be a knight by the end of today." He tightens up a loose belt as he does so.
>>
"You've killed a man Tyrus. Not many boys competing today can say that. I cannot stress this enough however, don't let it go to your head. If you're up against an opponent you cannot best, there is no shame in surrender. Surviving means one day you may rise again and perhaps beat the man who once beat you. Don't let that temper of yours flare to hot. Anger can be a weapon, but it's one just as dangerous to its user." As you were about to walk into the yard and join the other boys, Ser Mervyn stops you and gives you a clang on the helmet. By all the gods you hated when he did that and you grit your teeth beneath your helm. "Go out there boy. Go out there and win."

You found yourself in the castle yard, where a fence had been erected and currently corralled about 100 squires, varying in ages from 12 to 20. You saw the colours of Swyft and Crakehall. Of Rowan and Webber. Lydden, Lantell and Marbrand. Squires from all over the west and parts of the northern reach. You see your father raise a hand for peace, and you reach down to your other gauntlet to push down the favour you had received from Rose earlier that day.

Rose was a cook's daughter, a year older than you, and you had been sweet on her since the time you had turned 12. She had sewn a small red rose onto a plain piece of linen while practicing her sewing and when you had asked for her favour, she had given it to you with a smile and an inexperienced kiss. Thinking about it made your chest puff out with joy and your heart was pounding like a rabbits. You glanced about the crowd for her but did not see her. You hear the herald speak, but couldnt make out the words. Time seemed to slow to a crawl, and the crowd erupts as a horn sounds and you hear the clamor of steel and you can feel the happiness inside you drain away, only to be replaced with the black, bubbling tar that was your rage. You let forth a war cry, screaming RUIN!! at the top of your lungs as you charged into a boy about your age bearing the arms of House Jast.

You charged with a fury at the first opponent you saw. The unfortunate victim of your wrath bore the inverted yellow pile and lion heads of House Jast. Your vision narrows until all that matters in the world is eliminating him from your sight. He turns at the last minute and you see his eyes go wide from shock at the ferocity of your attack. He brings up his shield in an attempt to ward you off, as you had gotten inside the reach of threat of his spear and bring your sword down with a mighty clang against the boys head. His half helm didn’t stand up to the force of your blow and he crumples before you like wheat before the scythe. The fog of rage fades for only a moment and you see two boys facing you and they shy away at your display. You stepped over the prone form of the Jast boy and your mind flashes to the bandit you had slain again. Like a butcher cutting meat. Had this been real you would have taken your second life and you spit inside your closed helm in disgust at his lack of competence.

You followed Ser Mervyns advice and hugged the edge of the fence, preventing anyone from taking a cheap shot at you. Eventually you come across another squire with the same idea as you, although from the look on his face his reasons for avoiding the combat was cowardice. Terror was on his face, and you could see the tremor of fear at the end of his sword. You squared up with him and brought your shield into position…

3 Degrees of Success

Unknown Squire Health: 6 – 7 = -1
Result: Unknown Squire Defeated

You see the boy heft his own shield, but he is obviously under the tutelage of a lesser knight than your brother in law. He tries to hide behind his shield, which was decorated with purple stars on yellow, instead of using it as a platform to launch and attack. You seize the initiative and strike an obvious blow to which he over commits his defense to. After your sword thunks into the wood of the shield, you use your own shield to batter him and bring the pommel of your sword down onto his foolishly unprotected head. The boy yells in discomfort and you bring your sword in a viscous slash downwards across his face and you hear a high pitched scream. You look down to your blade and see the crimson stain of blood on your steel, and look down to see the boy mewling with pain. Upon closer inspection you see that one of his eyes is hanging loosely from it’s socket, the bone having been shattered by your blow.

Your lungs breathe in and you smelled...nothing. Time seemed to slow to an absolute stand still. As you gazed about you took in your opponents. Within seconds you had identified the most dangerous boys amongst the remaining squires, and to no great surprise they were all your elders. Tytos Brax was currently fighting off three younger boys by himself with a worrying amount of ease, whilst your distant cousin Mathew Rowan was engaged with a boy you didn’t know. He wore a coat of brigandine and wielded his spear, and his surcoat was a yellow crab on a field of purple and red, and the duel between the two of them was fearsome. Nearly of the quality of proper knights. A circle of empty space surrounded those two, and you took a moment to catch your breath.

Ser Mervyn’s advice be damned. There was no glory in waiting out for the final combatants on the sidelines. Tytos Brax was the most dangerous of your opponents, and you saw the opportunity to eliminate him. You rushed over to them and the now four younger squires surrounded him in a square formation and struck!

---Round 3 ---

Tyrus Reynold: 22 (19+1 for each additional man, 3) against Combat Defence: 10

3 x 4 = 12 Damage – 10 Armor Rating = 2 damage

3 Degrees of Success
3 x 4 = 12 Damage – 10 Armor Rating = 2 damage
Tytos Brax Health: 1 – 2 = -1

The four of you strike together and batter him, and even his considerable skill wasn’t enough to deflect and avoid 4 blows at the same time. Your own blow strikes high on his shield side shoulder, and in return he lashes out to the man on your left. The squire goes down in a lump and although the elder boy was wounded and on his last legs, he proved he was still dangerous. The square had become a triangle as the three of you maintained your distance and all of you took a moment to catch your breath. You look to both of your newfound “teammates” and with a swift nod you strikes again. One of the boys, wearing the blue and silver of House Lantell strikes first, causing Tytos to turn to face him and expose his flank to you and you do not allow such an opportunity to pass you by, Ser Mervyn’s training kicking in.

You swing your sword for all you were worth into the mans leg, aiming for the joint. Your sword connects and you hear the crunch of steel and Tytos falls to his knees. Surrounded by the three of you, he drops his sword and shield and yields to the three of you. The other two look up to smile at you, but they receive no smile in return. They exchanged a glance and now it seemed it was 2 against 1.

The two boys struck simultaneously at you and you swung at the Lantell boy in return. Ser Mervyn had warned you about the dangers of men wielding two handed swords, and the weaknesses that not using a shield presented. Your sword went into the boys midsection and his own sword collided into your shield and you grunt in pain as the force reverberated through the wood. The second boy, who's heraldry you didn't recognize swung with his mace and he connected against your shoulder. Pain screams through your arm but you manage to hold onto your sword, but fall to your knee by the force of the blows.

Your eyes close for a moment and when you open them you see nothing but red. You scream your rage and pain away and bring your sword to the Lantells head with a resounding clang and the boy fell to the ground unconscious, and with a backhanded swing you bring your sword in a backhanded cut towards the unknown squires and he manages to use his shield to block most of the blow but you still hear a hiss of pain come forth.

The squire falls to the ground and pleads “YIELD! I YIELD!!” and you look up and ignore the boy. He was no longer worthy of your attention now. As you look up you realized that you were the last boy aside from Mathew Rowan, who had also just finished dealing with the crab squire. He charged you and brought his mace down in a crushing blow you barely blocked in time. Your sword lashed out but found itself clanging off of his breastplate. You could feel your shield split slightly from the viscous blow and pain ran up your arm again. Your wrist may very well have a slight fracture by the intensity of the pain in your arm. You use the pain to fuel a blow using your good hand and your sword slashes at him but is blocked by his large oaken shield but you angle the riposte off and slash at his joint and you feel a satisfying thud as your sword finds his elbow joint. He pulls back and regards you before the dance of steel resumes…

Mathew Rowan brought his hammer down in a similar manner to Ser Mervyn. Even during such a violent and focused time your mind raced to the potential merits of maces, and you thought that perhaps your father had been wrong to insist that you were instructed in the longsword.

The mace came smashing down again into your shield and the wood let goes completely and you retreat a few steps and shake loose the remnants of your shield. You swung your sword but Mathews shield seems to block every blow. Your muscles ached and fatigue was setting in, and somehow Mathew seemed not to tire. A blow smashed into your breastplate from a sudden swing and you feel the metal give way and the wind leaves your lungs and you fall to your knees. Mathew Rowan walks over to you and asks for your surrender, but you smash his mace out of your face and you spring upwards to slash at him. The surprise attack almost works but he beats you down to your knees again, and this time you don't have the strength to maintain your balance and you fall to the ground with a thud face first into the ground, no longer having the strength to keep fighting.

You hear a loud hurrah erupt from the crowd and the field is cleared and Ser Mervyn hauls you to your feet, and although you were wobbling from exhaustion.

It's a shame they didn't make a difference, but Tyrus was up against some steep odds. Mathew had a regular knights stats, and Tytos was just a hair below that.

But today won't be a total loss for him, he made it to the final, which for a 14 year old is no small feat, and he'll get to meet up with Rose later on tonight. Plus, there will be a feeling of respect between Mathew and Tyrus, and the two will end up being pretty good friends as they become their own men.

As always, feel free to comment any criticism or suggestions you might have, feedback is always appreciated. Also, if there is anything in particular you guys want to do as Tyrus before we switch back to Mervyn, let's hear it.

Thanks again for playing guys!!
>>
I am loving the quest and the fact that some things are just out of our reach for the moment and balancing all the needs wants and obligations it is really engaging.
>>
Do you have anything planned more for Tyrus? I'd like to go through the knighting ceremony, watch the feast and get to meet rose at least before we go back to being Merv
>>
>>3502776
I want to seduce our mother-in-law as a mothers day gift!
>>
>>3502776
how grumpy is the wife that we are not very open with her ?
>>
>>3503394
Yeah. I think we should change that. She's a smart lady and has more reason to support us than anyone else, even her mother.
>>
>>3502787
I'm glad your enjoying it. I know I'm starting the build up to the real "action" of the house is really slow, but I can promise you guys the big plotline(s) are going to start revealing themselves. Especially if Mervyn increases his awareness and cunning because there are going to be some tests that will give you guys a lot of insight into whats happening should you pass.

>>3502801
Yeah I'm thinking we'll play out the rest of the day as Tyrus before heading back to our regular MC

>>3503390
As handsome as Mervyn is, he isn't Elleanor type. He lacks the needed red hair and dark eyes.

>>3503394
Well, she isn't pouting anymore about the last time, but mood swings are still happening. I'm honestly surprised you guys haven't utilized her. She is realistically the most reliable person Mervyn has to call on, plus she's an intelligent woman who can piece things together far better than Mervyn.

>>3504281
Nailed it. 10/10 would recommend!!

Lastly, regarding the feast thats going to happen, I need to ask a question. Is Mervyn going to participate in the "bedding" ceremony?

Participating in it could lead to more unsavory rumors about his character, but on the other hand, NOT participating in it could raise some eyebrows as to why?

For anyone that doesnt know what this is. It is when the men will carry the bride to the bedchamber and the women will carry the groom.

I am honestly a bit happy that we havnt. It gives him a bit more character compared to the other quests MCs who always listen and take their wife into considiration.

Yeah. I keep missing the "talk to wife y/n" votes and I hate it. We've got a loving wife from a highborn family right there! Why would we not go to her before anyone else. Even her mother should support a strong marriage between her daughter and sworn sword.

>Yay
To bedding.
>>
>>3504306
>yay

honestly anyone inclined to think we want to fuck Andrea already holds a dim opinion of us. It is literally just a tradition as long as nothing gets out of hand.

The fact that the resident hot muscley knight is going to be stripping and groping her will do naught but give Tygon a marriage night to remember.

As for Alyssa, we really should utilize her more since Eleanor seems reluctant to trust us with sensitive information (not incorrectly as her intrigue defence is likely far superior to our own).

Still if we want to be able to capitalize on the shifting political landscape we need to not be dependant on the Lady Reynolds for information. She relies on us, that's not the same as loyalty or trust.
>>
>>3504573
Mervyn is her sworn shield. Doesn't that imply a great deal of trust? I mean, yeah, she might partially consider him as a means to an end, but I doubt he's classed as a complete tool in her books or anything. He's done a lot of things for her that she cares a great deal about that go beyond his duty (like helping her children, making her daughter happy and keeping her husband at bay). Things that should have earned her trust.
>>
>>3504598
Just my take on it, but in backdoor politics, the less people that "know" the better. And even though Mervyn may be in her good books, and she trusts him to guard her and all that, it doesnt mean she considers him a player in the game yet.

She might even trust him with her life, but just because you trust someone doesn't mean you tell them everything. Not in Westeros anyways.

> yay to the bedding
>>
>>3504306
>yay
All in good faith
>>
Well that looks like a pretty resounding yay to bedding. Deadly.

In regards to Allysa though, I don't think using her for her knowledge and noble learning would be being ruled over by her. Asking her to piece some things together doesn't mean you have to do what she says or are under her control. But if you guys want to keep her in the dark, thats your guys' decision.

Elleanor however is a whole different kettle of fish. She definitely trusts Mervyn because he owes her pretty much everything he has. But she views him as a bit...dim? She doesn't think he has a mind for politics and so won't bring him into her plots and plans in any other aspect than a blunt tool until Mervyn proves her wrong.

I'm also thinking that Wednesday night will be my next run but I'll keep you guys posted on the twitter though, @Joebree28428728
>>
>>3506043
Is it possible to get waifu in on the plots for us? Don’t wanna invest too heavily into scheming and plots since Mervyn will never be amazing at them.
>>
>>3506274
Completely agree. I definitely think we should get her more involved.
>>
>>3506298
Honestly I don’t know why Elleanor hasn’t tried harder to get daughteru and her kids on her side of things. Maybe that’s where Mervyn comes in.
>>
>>3506043
Maybe after the birth the wifey will try to insert herself into all of this by herself. Rather than have Mervyn come to her
>>
>>3506317
You make a good point here, so I'll give a little summary of the childrens "loyalties" when it comes to their parents.

Tygon: Leans towards Elleanor, although is still amiable with Titus.

Joanna: Leans heavily towards Titus. The particular gripe she has is she's 19 and not married. Titus has tried before and Elleanor shut him down.

Allysa: Used to be quite neutral, now leans towards Elleanor for her part to play in her marriage to Mervyn.

Tyrus: Dead neutral. Used to HEAVILY favor Titus, but his mother allowing him to squire for Mervyn has brought him in the middle.

Elyse: Having been fostered in Lannisport, she has grown up heavily influenced by the Lantells, and accordingly, prefers her father to her mother, whom she views as unloyal to the Lannisters. LOL

James: He's only 10, so he isn't quite decided yet, but he's leaning towards Elleanor because he's fostering with her cousin, Mathis Rowan.

This isn't to say their is outright hostility in the family between the kids, just a general lean in their preferred [parents.

I can think of several reasons. Firstly, its a dick move to actively try and turn your children against your spouse, even if you hate them.

secondly, it would barely matter. the children have little say in the day to day running of the house.
>>
Well I'm ready for some more Tyrus action.

However on the topic of making it up to our dearly beloved wife I think Merv should make it a priority to find a Handmaiden for her during the events of the Tourney. Since that's an optional upgrade I'm sure she'd enjoy the presence of a noble lady.

Otherwise, after we deal with the Archers weapons to get their Captain on our side, I'm thinking we start saving up for the Superior Mounts 2.0. I really think it would benefit us the most and Merv is clearly in need of a new horse himself. The 3B conferred by riding a war-trained mount to his personal Fighting tests when mounted would be stupid helpful especially during Tourneys.

That and you know. Malroy horses.
>>
The crowd cleared away and you leaned on Ser Mervyn for support. Fatigue has eaten away at your strength and now that the adrenaline has left you, the pain started flooding in. Your left wrist was in agony, your legs were tired and sore and a general ache covered everywhere else. Your father Titus stood and announced the winner.

"Now, my fellow Lords and Ladies, knights and damsels, may I present to you the winner of the squires melee, Mathew Rowan!"

The crowd cheers and Lord Titus looks at you with a proud look and a smile, giving you a nod of acknowledgment as he waits for the crowd to quiet down again. Once quiet descends again he begins.

"Now, in honour of my son Tygons wedding to the lovely Andrea Brax, the knighthood shall be given by perhaps the most skilled knight ever to be born at Casterly Rock, and perhaps even all the Westerlands, Ser Tygett Lannister. He puts great emphasis on the name, and as he said it, you saw the tall, golden haired knight rise from the stand and make his way to the corral. He propels himself over the fence in a dramatic and gallant manner as he strides to the centre where Mathew stood. You felt the slightest stiffening from Ser Mervyn, but when you looked up at his face you found it blank and neutral, and even his eyes were empty of emotion.

Ser Tygett commands Mathew to kneel, and the 17 year old falls to his knees and Tygett draws his sword with an impressive flourish.

"Mathew Rowan...

In the name of the Warrior I charge you to be brave.

In the name of the Father I charge you to be just.

In the name of the Smith I charge you to complete your new duties.

In the name of the Mother I charge you to defend the young and innocent.

In the name of the Maid I charge you to protect all women

In the name of the Crone I charge you to offer true and honest council."

Mathew swears to uphold all of these vows and Tygett Lannister finishes the knighting ceremony and as he moves his sword from shoulder to shoulder he says loudly so all can hear "Arise, Ser Mathew Rowan."

This brings a final cheer, louder than all others before it. You pull off your helm and feel the crisp mountain air touch your skin at last, the sting of sweat in your eyes. You leave off of Ser Mervyn and make your way over to the now Ser Andros. Fighting your way through the crowd, his eyes find your own and he makes his way over to you, after which the two of you clasp arms in a show of mutual respect. "Well fought Ser Mathew." You say with a half smile. Disappointment sat heavy in your heart, but you tried your best not to show it. The older boy looks down at you and laughs, stating had you been of an age with him there would have been no contest. You leave him to his celebrations, surrounded by his own family and you are soon surrounded by yours. Your father gives you an approving smile, while your mother fusses over you like a mother hen, insisting that you were to see Maester Aethan immediately.
>>
It had been years since the whole of your family had been together, and now even James and Elyse were there, all them congratulating you on your showing, ensuring you that next time you were sure to be the winner, or asking after you injuries. Between the 6 of them, it was all too much and thankfully though, as much as you enjoyed seeing your family together, Ser Mervyn notices your irritation and comes not long after to pull you away, insisting that he would help you get out of your armour.

Together you walked in silence to the armoury, weaving your way through the crowd. You spy Maester Aethan tending to the boy who’s eye you’d injured. Recalling your heraldry lessons you remembered that his arms were those of House Peckledon. The boy was the most serious injury of the melee, and your own injuries could wait a while longer, despite your mothers insistence that they were tended to immediately. As Ser Mervyn begins to help you out of your armour he pulls off the gauntlet on your injured wrist and you pull away in pain, but he grasps you firmly and wrenches the armour off before puling back your sleeve and inspecting your arm, lightly touching the skin feeling for injury. “The bone is broken. Blunt weapons will do that to you.”

As he says this his give your broken arm a stiff prod bringing a sharp stab of pain and you yell out in pain. “You could have won that melee if you’d had the patience to wait until the end like I’d told you. You let your anger cloud your judgement. I’ll say this as many times as needed to get it through your thick, stubborn skull. There is no honour in dying, and you’re on a fast track to dying if you fight like this in war. You’re young, small and inexperienced. You’re the exact target every man wants to find himself on the other side of.” He lets the silence hang in the air as he continues to help you out of your armour, practiced hands removing belts, clasps and buckles. The silence was damning, and you were determined to fill it....

“Ser Mervyn, can I ask you something?” Your sponsor nods without a sound as he continues his work diligently. “How would I…how would…do you have any advice about…women?” you manage to word out awkwardly. So much so in fact that Ser Mervyn stops what he’s doing and looks at your with a raised eye brow and a look of shock on his normally stoic face. “I’d thought you might have questions of a more martial nature. Something along the lines of how to defeat a man using a mace for example. But women…it’s that kitchen wench you always get your chest puffed out for isn’t it?” You feel your face reddening and your eyes drop to the floor, which brings a hearty belly laugh from Ser Mervyn. “Aye, I might not be as attentive as your mother or sisters, but even I can notice when my squire is trying to impress a woman.” He says this as he pulls forth Roses favour from your gauntlet and glances at it in passing. “I see you already have her favour, what more do you need to know? There’ll be a feast tonight. She’ll be there. My own first time was with an innkeeps daughter in the loft of a stable. If I was you, when the dancing begins, I’d steal away with a skin of wine, find your woman and sneak off to a quiet part of castle if you catch my meaning.”

You nod your head, and the flush of your skin only darkens in colour. “Y-yes Ser. Thank you. But I do have other questions I guess. Do you think you could teach me to fight with a mace?” This brings a long hmmm from Mervyn as he chews the thought thoroughly. “Your father instructed me to teach you the ways of the longsword. But I’ll tell you what squire, I figure if your old enough to become a man, your old enough to figure out the way you want to fight. You come to me a man made tomorrow, and once your wrist is healed I’ll start to teach you the hammer and mace as well as the sword.

Once you’ve been stripped of your armour, you begin to make your way to Maester Aethans chambers where you were sure he had returned to after tending to the other boys. As your walking, you hear quick footsteps behind you and feel an arm entwine with your good one, and you look over to find Rose walking alongside you. “You fought bravely today Tyrus. Very gallant. One day you’ll be my gallant, shining knight.” She says this with the innocence of youth you both shared, and the sappy tone of love in her voice.

The option for a handmaiden will come up towards the end of the tournament, so no worries there. Plus potentially the regular upgraded warhorses depending on how the joust goes.

You'll have until month 12 to save up for Superior Mounts 2.0, as that's when you'll actually have the opportunity to purchase them.

“How could I not have though my Lady. I had the favour of the most beautiful woman in Ember Peak. I’m shamed to say that I lost though, I hope your honour can withstand the blow.” A giggle that makes your heart soar fills your ears and she covers her smile with her mouth. “I’m no lady m’lord. Just a cooks girl. But a lucky one at that to have such a fierce protector, and I have no doubt that when you come into your manhood you’ll be the fiercest warrior ever. Greater than Ser Mervyn, Ser Tygett…all of them.”

You’d promised to marry her one day. You were only the second son, destined to serve your brother as a household knight, of perhaps master at arms one day. And should you have to leave Ember Peak to marry the woman you loved so be it. “I promise you this my Lady Rose, the next tournament I fight in, I will win for you. By all the gods, old and new, I swear it.” More giggles and a cute blush comes to her pretty face. She had pale skin that easily showed her blush, framed by dark hair that was almost black, and she had light freckling on the top of her cheekbones.

“Will I see you at the feast?” you ask hopefully. This brings a scowl to her face and she informs you that she’ll have to work during the feast. “Well perhaps once the feast is done and the party starts properly, I’ll sneak away with some food and we can feast ourselves?” You meant it as a statement but it came across as a question. “She dramatically brings her hand to her chin, stroking an imaginary beard as she pretended to think long and hard. “I’d like that.” The two of you were approaching Maester Aethans chambers, and the both of you looked down the hallway and found it empty and enjoyed a kiss before breaking it off when you heard footsteps. Rose flattens down her dress, and bids you a good day, and you went into the maesters chamber with a knock.

If he's not, than I'll probably just make it Mervyn inquiring after their splendid horses and making it strictly a business deal.
>>
-A few hours later-
The feast was nearing it’s end. You were seated at the end of the high table, glancing down the long hall at the assembled lords and ladies. You had clumsily gotten through the courses of the wedding with your hand. The maester had wrapped your arm in a tight splint, extending all the way up to your fingers, which Maester Aethan assured you was necessary because you couldn’t move your fingers without agony occurring in your wrist. This made eating an irritation, and the feast dragged on and on, your mind preoccupied with thoughts of Rose and your coming visit. Eventually though, you see your father rise from his seat, and bring his hands wide to silence the hall, and the roar of the assembly eventually dies down to a quiet whisper. “My Lords and Ladies. Thank you all for joining us here, to celebrate the marriage of two young people and the merging of two noble houses.” He lets the polite applause die down before continuing again. “But as we all well know, no marriage is valid until it is consummated, and now that the feast is over…”

You could hear a few men shout from the back of the hall, and soon enough a chant of “BED THEM” had taken over the crowd. Laughter and mirth spread as rapidly as wildfire, and you see a few noblemen rise from their seats and make their way to the high table to scoop up the laughing Lady Andrea, whilst the ladies drag Tygon away towards his chambers with a smile on his face. You notice Ser Mervyn help Allysa up from her chair and escort her to her brother so she can participate in the fun, after which he joins the men in their merriment and you soon follow. Before Andrea is even at the end of the hall, her dress has been ripped off of her and she is down to her small clothes. She laughs heartily and she gives out as many jests and jibes as she receives, of which there are many. In truth, you know not what to say, but you heard may things. “Well I never. A clam in the mountains.” And “Watch your eyes lads, those nipples look sharp as swords.” Hands groped after her, which she smacked away feigning indignation and shock, before giving back her own comments. “I say Ser, I’d have figured you a woman your hands are so small” all the way to “I hadn’t reckoned there would be a taste for sea food my Lord. Care for a taste”. Ser Mervyn wasn’t immune to her tongue either. “Yes you are handsome Ser, but your beard is so course. It’s a wonder your wifes thighs aren’t so chafed that she can’t ride a horse.”

The party comes to a stop outside Tygons bedchambers, where the women catch up shortly after and the naked couple look each other up and down with grins on their faces, and they enter the room together, with much shouting and banging on their door. The crowd disperses after some minutes to return to the hall where soon you find much dancing. As you return, you find yourself looking at an empty high table, except for your mother.
>>
She stares into the empty space with a strange look in her eye, but as the crowd begins to file in, she blinks and all of a sudden seems to snap back to reality and looks at you and smiles from across the way.

Music filled the hall, benches and tables were cleared away and soon enough dancing was starting. Your father was at a table talking with the Swyfts, and you spy the captain of the garrison, Ser Devon Drake talking with your mother, whilst the rest of the lords and ladies began to dance in the empty space and much merriment was made.

Depends upon the events Mervyn decides to compete in.

Melee, Donold more than likely.
Jousting, Pastorm for sure.
Both, maybe Dontos.
Courtly intrigue and politics, Vamos and Esemella Hayford.
Dancing, Isis.

Daeyla Malroy and her husband Ser Grover Grey would be there but old, so their children and grandchildren would compete. Ser Vance Redward and Royce Waters would compete in the Joust and Squire's Melee respectively. Probably a handful of other Malroy relatives I can't remember off the top of my head.

But yeah, would definitely be down to write a few scenes of dialogue for them.

We should totally bring up the fact that they are missing a son and ask where he is. I am sure it will be wonderfully awkward.
>>
You approached a table that had been pushed off to the side and found a skin of wine. You grab it casually and take a sip, finding a sweet golden wine from the arbor and you attached it to your belt. You spy a second skin and take a swig and find this one to be a much darker, sour red. Dornish you had heard your elder siblings say. Everywhere you looked you saw people dancing, drinking and laughing. You noticed more than a few men groping and feeling after the serving girls, and you felt palpable relief that Rose was working in the relative safety of the kitchens. As you make your way towards the exit, you overhear all manner of conversations, many of them regarding the Lady Andrea and the bedding ceremony. One in particular catches your ear, even though you only catch pieces of it.

“etter than the last one”
“eive I nearly married…”

hate her husband all you want, but calling a noble lady a common whore shows immense disrespect for the house. Especially considering you are currently their fucking guest.

Its the type of slight that could bring this entire party to a screeching halt while Ser Mervyn demands an apology. And given the feelings involved one he will likely not get. From there it escalates depending who these knob gobblers are.

If, as I suspect, they are part of the lannister party things could go poorly indeed. Tyrus for one doesnt have the temperment to let such a thing slide on account of wine.

If its a member of the house, then so mich the better.

either way I say we call them out and let the chips fall as they may

Tyrus: 9 vs Difficulty 6
Result: One Degree of Success

You had been exiting the hall when you overheard the glimmer of a conversation, but this one stood out to you as odd. Whereas most we’re talking with excitement and merriment. This one was angry, irritated and off putting. You approached the table where the voices we’re coming from where you saw four men sitting with their backs to the room. One man, a weak chinned man in the colours of House Swyft appeared to be the ring leader of the conversation, while what appeared to be his lackeys joined in with their own comments. You pulled up a chair and grabbed a goblet, which you found to be filled with more wine and began to sip it as you listened in on their conversation.

“Still though, I have to say I’m happy that my horse flinched at the last minute else I’d be married to the bitch. Any woman who would spread her legs for some common born bastard is a whore not fit to marry any Swyft.” His friends drink to that and chime in their agreement, but one proceeds to ask “But I thought you and her father ‘ad a deal there Herman. If the bastard died, you’d marry her instead.”

This brings a hard scowl to the mans face. “And what? Raise some baseborn spawn? I think not. At least pregnancy gave her some udders. Fucking disappointment she was at her own wedding.

You realize the men are talking about your sister and Mervyn…

You felt your temper flare, the black tar that would boil up from inside you and threaten to spill everywhere. They were talking about your family. In your home. It would not stand you decided. You picked up a jug of wine. It was made of heavy ceramic and you got up from your table quietly. You walked around as inconspicuously as you could manage until you were standing behind Ser Herman Swyft. They were still talking and complaining. Herman commented on how he felt sorry for Allysa’s baby, having a bastard for a father and a whore for a mother and you snap.

“My. Sister. Is. NOT. A! WHORE!” You yell at the top of your lungs before raising the jug high and smashing it over his balding head. He falls to the ground in a slump, out cold and his men are soon on their feet rushing over the table and benches in order to get to you. A big man with a boar on his doublet lands a punch on you and splits your lip open, whilst another with no sigil at all grabs at your arms and pins you in place while the third man buries a fist into your guts expelling all the wind out and you fall limp in the second mans arms.

The commotion spreads quickly, but quickly a guard realizes who you are and the commotion soon turns to panic, as the three men realize who exactly they had been beating. You hear your father shouting “STOP” at the top of his lungs and saw your mother rushing from the high table to accompany you. Soon there is a wide circle surrounding you and Ser Herman groggily gets up, resting a hand on the table to steady himself, before making eye contact with your father.

“GUEST RIGHT” he yells to nobody in particular. “Guest right and this little pissant decides to assault my person under your protection Titus? By all the gods I should call your little son here an oathbreaker and by association you.”

You struggle against the men holding you. “Father, he was the one who was breaking it. He was calling Ally a whore, and Ser Mervyn a bastard. Saying how he’d hope Ser Mervyn would die.”

“I did no such thing, my lord. Clearly the boy is drunk and overheard us talking about the bedding.” One of his men chimes in “And I was only speaking of a whorehouse in Lannisport which had a particularly fine…” Your father waves his hand. Ser Herman, I apologize for my sons behavior. He…”
>>
You interrupted him again. “LIAR! I KNOW WHAT I HEARD!”. Ser Hermans eyes squint maliciously at you, before turning back to your father. “I cannot expect the boy to know better on account of his teacher. Perhaps you’ll allow me to educate him tomorrow before the melee begins properly. A duel. Consider it a trial by combat if you will. That way you can know which of us is telling the truth Titus. I would never dare to insult your family, especially inside your own halls.” The man was a lickspittle you decided, although you had little hope of beating the man. You’d remembered from Allysa’s wedding that Herman had been a favourite to win her hand, and now that you had a broken arm, you chances dwindled even further. But before your father can even respond, Mervyn steped forth from the crowd and made his way in between yourself and Ser Herman. He stands tall, his handsome features taking on a dark side in the glow of the torch light, and the fire burning from the sconces is reflected in his normally empty eyes.

“If you wish to make this a trial by combat Herman, I’ll be fighting as my squires champion.” He looked at you with questioning eyes. Asking you without speaking if what you said was true, to which you nodded. He addresses the crowd loudly after that. “And any man who wishes to see me dead, or insult my wife’s honour would do well to keep those views to himself. Lest he find himself in Ser Hermans position. The look he shot towards him contained so much anger that you thought he might attack him in the very hall, but Ser Mervyn kept his temper. Lord Titus wrings his hands. “My hands are tied, and honour will be satisfied than. Tomorrow, before the melee proper. A…duel.” He shakes his head and retires, heading off to who knows where. Your mother grabs you firmly by the shoulder and begins to lead you towards the door, and soon you find yourself walking towards your own bed chambers.

the virgin herman vs the chad mervyn
>>
“Tyrus, that was foolish.” She states simply as she walks, footsteps echoing softly as the two of you leave the roar of the crowd behind you. Silence follows the statement and you fill it with your reasoning.

“Mother they were insulting us. Our family in our own home. What else was I to do? Let them insult Ally and Mervyn? That coward got what he deserved.”

You walk on and she responds. “Ser Herman may be many things, but a coward is not one of them. He is a fierce swordsman, and you would do well to remember that.” She seemed remarkably calm, which was unusual because she was normally the far more draconian of the two of your parents when it came to discipline. “Tyrus, I need to discuss something with you, and you must swear to take it to your grave.”

You eye your mother with a look, at which she shakes her head at you before continuing. “When you went to Hornvale, Ser Mervyn found a ruby. It is of the utmost importance that nobody, not even your father, knows that he has it. Understood?”

“No mother, why? Ser Mervyn was also acting funny about that, and I don’t understand.” She pulls you in closer to her in an embrace as you walk. “One day I’ll explain it to you, but it’s important that you don’t know what’s going on. That temper of yours…” She looks down at you and smiles. “One day you’ll be a great knight Tyrus. Perhaps even great enough to be in the Kingsguard.”

The two of you reach your chambers and as you enter you turn and ask your mother if that was it? That was all the discipline you were going to receive. She laughs. It had been a long time since you’d heard her laugh, and she replies that she had never liked Ser Herman, and that so long as you kept quiet about it, you would get away without another word.

>>

Nigga said trail by combat. He's dead
>>
>>3512752
I mean a party can yield if they want to, but if they don't yield it's to the death. And yielding makes you look like a craven. His plan was to try and cow Tyrus into refusing or at least manage to shame Titus publicly when he refused him his duel because he's spiteful like that.

Now that Ser Mervyn has stepped in though, things got alot more serious. There is a good possibility death or maiming could follow on the morrow.
>>
Hours had gone by, and the candles in your room had burned low. You couldn’t sleep. Anger had taken it’s toll on you, and before your mother had left she had expressly forbidden you from leaving your chambers, so as to keep up the ruse that you had been punished. Fatigue had begun to set in, and you were brewing on what had happened. Anger burned like an ember in your chest, occasionally flaring as you realized Rose would be waiting for you. You decided you would wait until the whole castle was quiet, and than sneak out and try to find her, but before you need to you hear a quiet knock on your door, and when you open it you find Rose standing there, holding a skin of wine.

“H-how? What?” you manage to stammer out in your confusion. She giggles. Gods how you loved when she did that. “Ser Mervyn found me and gave me this, said I was to take it your chambers personally and make sure you received it. So…here you are m’lord.” You invited her in and take a seat at the table and she went and found two glasses and poured, the dark red liquid swirling in the glasses. You clink them together softly, and when she takes a swallow she frowns and coughs. “Gods that’s sour. What is that?” After swallowing a gulp yourself you inform her it was a dornish red. This brings a rue smile to her and a comment about the dornish, wine and women. You were happy for the relative dark because you had gone red at the comment, and the two of you finish the wine skin long into the night. She always had an ear to listen to you in your anger, and she listened to your dreams of knighthood with an eager ear. When you try and pour her another glass and find the skin empty, she laughs prettily, and stands before walking over to you and sitting on your lap, finger tracing your doublet. “Tyrus, theres something I’ve been thinking about.” She gives you a quick kiss before continuing on. “I know how upset you are you lost today, and all the kitchen could talk about is how you started a fight at the feast. I heard it was about your sister? Anyways, I’ve been thinking…that I might not be able to make you a knight. But…but I can make you a man.” She kisses you quickly after that, long and hard, and as unpracticed as only a girl of 15 could be, and together the two of you make your way to your bed to become a man and woman.

And I think this is where I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to archive the thread and I'll be around to answer any questions or feedback you guys might have as always.

I enjoyed writing Tyrus, angry little fucker that he is, and I hope you guys enjoyed playing him as well. When we pick back up we'll be back to being Mervyn, and we can duel Ser Herman Swyft and spend the day meleeing and the like.

Great thread my man. Looking forward to the Melee and hanging dong on Herman.

Tyrus is a great character. Yeah sure its more of the same character wise, low intrique high combat, but being just a cut below is fun too. And being an unabashedly angry little fucker is fun af. If I knew any better it looks like he's going down Brynden Malroys path. The way he thinks about Rose and that anger.

>>
>>3512801

>>3512816
Much appreciated. I'm really looking forward to writing that. You guys will get to see how protective Mervyn can be about people he considers "his".

Also, I really did want to do a thread as Elleanor and all of her intrigue, doing so now would reveal way to much of what is totally over Mervyn and Tyrus's heads. Little details and things thrown in here and there that I don't think anyone has picked up on.

>>3512827
He's starting to, and Mervyn is growing on him. Perhaps once Tyrus gets older, they could even become friends if this kind of interaction keeps up.

>>3512825
>>3512836
That's going to a be a big decision for next thread, one I hope i can get a decent amount of discussion on because it'll be fairly important.

All he needs to do is yield, the guy was willing to fight a one armed squire and get away with it.
>>
>>3512866
Honestly, I don't see a "good" outcome here. Assuming we win, he will either be alive and salty as fuck, and probably try to kill us some point in the future. If we kill or maim him, his family will likely come after us in his place. Maybe if we beat him convincingly enough he'll second guess trying anything in the future.
>>

shame Titus publicly when he refused him his duel because he's spiteful like that.

Was that bandit leader ever confirmed as a bastard of house swyft? Because if he was, sounds to me like Herman and titus might be in bed together, and now Herman is throwing a tantrum
>>
>>3513282
I think we may have to kill him during the duel. And challenge his other friends after we are done with him and do the same to them.
>>
>>3513304
And if hes something with Titus, we just tied up a loose end for him. It's honestly a shame Merv doesnt seem like the "take prisoners" type because God damn do I have questions for this prick. Speaking of which, is the dead meat we are about to tenderize a member of the main branch? Or is he a cousin or something?
>>
>>3513282
okay as far as i can tell, heres whats going on.

one of the primary ways to form alliances in westeros is through marriage. because of this both Titus and Elleanor have different opinions on who their children should marry.

We see this very strongly in the negotiations over the marriage to the lannisters of lanisport.

They also have diametrically opposed views as to the lanisters. Titus favors them, and Elleanor would like nothing better than to be the nucleus of a full blown rebellion against them.

Titus wants stronger ties to house Swyft. Elleanor fucking hates them.

the bandit raids on house Brax were a set up. Lord Swyft sent his bastard son to lead the bandits in a raid on something on the Gold road (likely something very important like taxes) then set up shop (hide out) in Brax territory.

Titus informed Terrance that he was to ensure their companies raided the bandits who had served their purpose.

Mervyn was supposed to A) die in the raid, or B) be accused of a crime connected to the bandits and executed.

since there are so many people who hate him, Mervyn is the perfect scapegoat. its easy to convince people to testify against him.

Allyssa would have then been married off to either lord Swyft or one of his men. Strengthening ties between the two houses.

Speculation: Titus would then have used Ser Mervyns connection to the crimes on the gold road to undermine his wifes authority. And taken advantage of his absence to break down her door and rape her nightly.
>>
>>3514034
conclusion: the house of Swyft insults our wife and seeks our life. they are enemies to a man and deserve extermination until they prove tractable or extinct.

if merciless be our vice, then let us lean in and redefine the meaning.

bearing in mind of course that dead men tell no secrets.
>>
>>3514039
Yeah this makes alot of sense to me. That chest we found could even have been taxes or a payment for something. There is some below the belt shit going on here right now. My only problem with your theory is why would Herman be shit talking them so hard if he was allied with them? And challenging Tyrus to a duel doesnt add up either if they're trying to bring their houses together.

Either way though, swift dies by our hand
>>
>>3514215
remember when we saw Titus and Lord Swyft talking to one another? they are thick as thieves.

HOWEVER, both Titus and Elleanor have very different opinions on what should be done with their children. Titus views them the way a stereotypical westerosi Lord does. As bargaining chips to make the house stronger. After all, he was trying to arrange his daughters marriage without her being present or having met the lannister in question. Not her betrothed mind, her marriage. And from what we've seen of Swyft, Titus cares little if his sons or daughters are happy.

Eleanor on the other hand clearly believes her children should marry for love. The relative merits of this are debatable, as is her hatred for the Lanisters. However, given her past its just what she is going to do.

As for Herman shit talking. Part of that is the fact that he was likely in his cups. The rest of it is that his ire was directed at Allyssa and Mervyn. It was just sour grapes brought about by him thinking about the missed opportunity.

He's at a wedding, so the subject is on his mind. He's drunk so he isn't thinking too clearly. And there is the bastard born knight who cheated him out of the girl who was supposed to be his, AND killed his bastard son not three days gone. Then he had the gall not to be framed and die when he should.

The whore comment was just residual angst spilling over onto Allyssa because he can't have her when he clearly wants her.

Lord Swyft hates Mervyn, and probably Eleanor, while wanting to hate-fuck Allyssa. He is in good with Titus who hates Mervyn, wants to hate-fuck Eleanor, and doesn't give much of a shit about Alyssa as long as she gets him some sweet trade deals or influence.

The duel was meant to cow Tytus and get him to shut the fuck up so everyone would think he was a lying little shit. Only best boy has a mean streak a mile wide and doesn't back down from bitches.

Watch back how Swyft tried everything he could to cover over his faux past. but he's an uncouth fucker and it didn't work. Shutting our boy up was the next best thing.
>>
>>3512909
We sure are!

>>3512968
Good is a relative term I guess. Too be honest I kind of muddled the situation up. I meant for it to come across as more of a duel to satisfy honour, but writing while exhausted isn't always a good idea, but I'll stick with what I've written.

>>3513282
>>3514034
It's pretty damn rewarding to see some of the pieces falling into place. I will address a couple of things though.

I won't tell you guys about Hershel Hill, but I can say that Herman Swyft is the son of Addison Swyft, not Harys. Addison is Harys' brother, and the steward of Cornfield. If you want to figure out the connection in character, I mean...someone in Ember Peak has a great knowledge of Houses and their histories and households.

And be the nucleus to a full blown rebellion? Nawwww. She knows first hand what happens when you fuck with Tywin Lannister. However, she does have a plan that will royally piss off Tywin though

As for the differences between Titus and Elleanor, don't forget that they both agreed to marry Tygon to Andrea without them meeting first, and to let knights compete for Allysa's hand. They both want their children to be happy, and both of them love their children, but they're both scheming and trying to enact their own plans through their children.

With Allysa, Titus wanted to have a knight Tyrus could squire for, which was potentially the son of his old friend Addison. Elleanor however, wanted an excuse to try and keep Tyrus close to her without having to foster him away.

As for Tygons wedding, both of them understand the importance of having a ready supply of iron, but Elleanor is the one leading the pack on this one because she wants to expand the houses holdings. And let me tell you her plan isn't pleasant. She is going to be asking some not very nice things of Mervyn in the coming days.

Lastly, regarding how Titus and Ser Herman are in kahootz. Titus has been talking to Cornfield, mostly Addison, and there was some trickery involved when Mervyn went to Hornvale. More ideas have been touched on there, and it's just about been hashed out quite well, but as soon as Mervyn figures it out in character, I'll explain how it all went down OOC.

But thanks though everybody, seeing discussion like this is super rewarding for me, glad to see you guys are invested in this!!
>>
>>3514522
I had noticed the cornfield name pop up a time or two, but to my shame I am terrible at keeping house names in order without a character to attach the name to.

Ive also clearly over romanticized Elleanors demeanor due to the main characters perspective while ignoring the signs that she is likely -more- ruthless than her husband.

As for the rebellion, it was a small bit of hyperbole based on Elleanor's motivations. After all, if she COULD, then she would likely relish bringing ruin down on tywin and all his ilk. But of course, she cannot.

In fact, from a purely pragmatic point of view, Titus might have a vision for the house that is both safer and more prosperous.

If Mervyn were a TRULY merciless man he would assist Elleanor until such time as Titus was out of the way (dead, imprisoned, eunich, what have you) and Elleanor was tits deep in plots the Lannisters wouldnt approve of, then betray her to them.

I dont expect the player base to support such a plan, but he is uniquely positioned for it. The wife would also be mad.
>>
>>3512968
The best outcome is we maim his head. Severe, acute, traumatic brain injury. Turn the guy into a drooling vegetable retard. If we kill him, there’s potential for a blood feud. If we maim him some other way, he’s alive, and bitter, and has no other recourse except to learn how to scheme for his revenge.
>>
>>3514522
>We sure are!

Shame. I would like to see the duel from Alyssa's perspective. Get a sense of how she feel and what she thinks and what she and her family talks about Mervyn when he is not around.
>>
>>3514635
Don't forget, Mervyns virtue is loyalty though. Although I want to say that in character creation we decided to be loyal to ourselves first, and our wife, before anybody else so we could maybe betray our sponsor if the opportunity presents itself.

>>3515241
Supporting this. If elleanors perspective would reveal to much, Alyysa could be a fun "mini thread within a thread" to explore. And not to sound harsh QM but you havent exactly fleshed her out or given us a taste of her personality asides from her pouting because we were keeping secrets from her, so seeing how she thinks could be refreshing and maybe let some anons trust her enough to go to her for information.
>>
>>3514978
not true! We can do so, so much more than kill him.

some examples.

every fighter has a few bad habits or foibles that need work. All we need do is observe him closely enough, and then after a particularly nasty hit go "hah, my lord told me you would drop your guard if pressed on the left side (for example)." heavily imply that Titus wanted to undermine house Swyft for some reason and was itching for an excuse. The knight we face is likely not a master of social intrigues, and will at that point be suffering from injuries or wounds. He will either A)repudiate that lord Titus would betray house Swyft, proving their collusion, in which case he can be killed or not, or B) swallow the bait and sour the relationship between Titus and Swyft in which case he should be permanently maimed. leaving him alive as a cripple will tax the resources of house Swyft even if only slightly, and poison their relationship with bitter recrimination. As well as serving as a living half man reminder not to cross ser mervyn.

Or he will yeild and be revealed a coward. In which case the only appropriate response is to make him humiliate himself to drive home how much of a limp dicked craven he really is. Bonus points of he picks up an inescapable knickname out of it.

The important part of course is to insinuate that Elleanor and Titus are working together and that their spite is a farce allowing them to play factions off each other.
>>
>>3515241
>>3515311
Alright well, if there is sufficient support for the idea, we can continue on our vacation from Mervyn and get a glimpse inside the mind of Allysa.

If you guys choose to do this, I'll pre-roll up the duel myself, and we can do a little more intrigue and maybe put some puzzle pieces together.

>>3514635
We certainly could be THAT merciless if certain events unfold. We are loyal to Elleanor, but only so far as there is potential to advance our goal which is power.

Alright well just to gauge interest

>>
Well that's a pretty resounding yes to me. And I haven't rolled for anything yet, but if dice pools indicate anything, Herman is fucked. There will probably be a bit of scandal if he dies, but Mervyn will really start gaining a reputation for being dangerous. If he keeps up this reputation, word of his deeds could even reach Tywin "Make it Reyne" Lannister when he returns home from Kings Landing this year. If that's a good thing or not is up for debate.

>>3516697
I'm going to be taking a week or so off from running, but I'm thinking about the 26th or 27th of May.

We are pretty much becoming Elleanor's The Mountain
>>
>>3517006
That's not a bad thing though, is it? I mean if she lands us and gives some vast tracts of land, anything we do for her seems worth it.

Mervyn doesnt give actually me "mountain" vibes though. I mean hes definitely a beat stick, and a blunt object used to hammer her enemies so they might have the same job, butmerciless doesnt mean cruel, and Mervyn comes across as cold when he does that kind of stuff. Like when jaimie says he goes away inside, Mervyn just disappears inside himself and does what needs doing. Just my two pence on the character though

I wouldn't say her personal mountain, in my head he is a more "loyal and knightly" version of Bronn.

As for Mervyn going away inside like Jaime, that's not really how Mervyn works. The guy has seen some shit, and been a part of some nasty things in his life. He was even part of a bandit group in the riverlands for about 8 months. He can be soft and caring to the people he cares about, but if you arn't one of them, yeah. Not a good guy to have as an enemy.

>>
>>3521660
I was thinking of a more warm Roose and I misspelled his name, but I do like the Reynold family and I hope to see more of them.
>>
>>3525598
I can see the comparison. I think the easiest way to summarize Mervyn is that he sees the world in a very black and white sort of way. He isn't a psychopath incapable of feeling empathy, he just doesn't give a shit about people he doesnt care about. He's seen enough of the world to know that people die everyday and that their deaths are irrelevant. He's also seen what mercy can lead to first hand, and that it's often better just to kill the man and be done with it.

You'll get to see it from Allysa's POV next thread, but she knows Mervyn is a fearsome warrior and has done some bad shit, but it still surprises her how ruthless he can be because he seems rather soft around her. For example, Merv is actually really good with small children. And yet on the battlefield? A literal wrecking ball,

But rest assured, more is coming. Just finished a job so I've got a few days to recuperate and get Allysas thread figured out. I'm expecting Sunday night to be the next run.
