Ragnar decides to wait until the group of stilt-legs is distracted to examine what they were fighting. The kobold watches from the bushes as they pack everything on the cart. The stilt-legs mostly stay quiet, though one conversation peaks Ragnar's interest.

"We are heading straight back to Stillfield, correct?" A male voice says. He can't see too much because of the distance and them running around with bright torches.

"Yes, we have to report this right away. Who knows how many townsfolk will be in danger from these... Sea demons." A different, gruffer sounding stilt-leg male replies.

"And we are going on land the whole way? That will take forever won't it?" The first voice says.

"About three days, yes." The elf says back. "Going along the shore should be far safer then going on the water or through the forest."

Shortly after this little is left of their camp other than the charred remains of their campfire. As they walk away Ragnar sneaks up to the ocean to see what they were fighting.

The nearest corpse he can find is... Well it looks very stilt-leg in appearance. It's roughly the same height except it's skin is a pale blue, it has webbed hands and feet, and the head of a fish. The particular one he approached had one of it's hands lopped off and was shot at least twice with a bow. Nearby lie the creatures weapons, a spear and a net.

The red kobold is a bit confused at what this thing could be. It looks like a stilt-leg crossed with a fish, it smells like a stilt-leg crossed with a fish. Ragnar even takes a small nibble of it's upper arm and must admit it tastes like a stilt-leg crossed with a fish. What could it be?

What does Ragnar do?

Ragnar decides to name these things "Mer-stilt-legs". They are tall, so they must be stilt-legs, which also means they must be enemies. On the other claw, they are enemies of the regular stilt-legs, so maybe these fish things could be alright.

Ragnar then collects the spear and the net, being pretty much all he can carry in addition to the javelin he picked up earlier.

The kobold then wonders if being three or four days out from a stilt-leg settlement might be a bad place to put a nest. Sure, they could gather materials easily, but if they are found then they might be screwed.

Ragnar looks north to see where the elf lady and her friends went. He bets that he could still follow them if he tried. On the other claw, he told Klindi that he wouldn't be gone for more than a day or two, and Ragnar wonders what she'll do if he thinks he is dead.

What does Ragnar do?
>>
>>3509809
Hmm. Following them might be a good idea, if for nothing else for knowing where this stilt-leg settlement is, especially if it's only 3 days away by land.
But on the other claw, yeah, we'd be gone like an additional week. Hmm...
>>
>>3509809
Forcing her to wait a whole week to hear from us again is a bit much. Let's take what we can get back to the nest and tell her what we learned.

Ragnar decides to head back towards the nest. He knows where the stilt-legs are going, so he can always head up there later. He thinks that maybe checking up on Klindi is a better idea, since he didn't say how long he'd be gone.

The red kobold has to sleep under another bush part way through his journey when dawn breaks, but he reaches the nest early the next night.

"Oh! You aren't dead, that's good." Klindi says with a wave as Ragnar walks into the main room of the nest. When he asks if she was worried at all the female kobold replies. "Well, I mean coming back a little late is pretty normal for a hunting party. Things just come up, you know?"

The red kobold looks around the nest. He was hoping there'd be some food around here, but all he sees are crab shells and bones scattered around. Ragnar asks about this.

"Well, I'm not sure how to process the bodies myself really. I can skin them and get the meat, but I don't know how to preserve it, so I have to eat everything right away. I was about to go hunting again, so you should have something to eat before dawn."

Ragnar shows Klindi what he's gathered.

"Well, I'm not which with a javelin or a spear, particularly ones sized for stilt-legs. Maybe if we cut them down we can use them. I can use that net as a trap though, that'll be super useful!"

Ragnar then says what he saw on his journey.

"Hrm... Mer-stilt-legs huh? I've never heard of such a thing, but if the regular stilt-legs are afraid of them then they can't be all bad, can they?" Klindi says shrugging.

They have a town about three days walk from that campsite, if that's the closest place stilt legs are to us that's not bad.
I'll need to go check it out sometime.
Also they had drying racks to cure meat, maybe we can do that too so we can save some food for later.
The net should make it easier to catch things.

Ragnar also mentions that there is a settlement three days north, according to the stilt-legs he saw.

"For us closer to three and a half to four days." Klindi says thinking. "But that's good! You can get to stealing us some supplies."

The red kobold asks what he should get.

"Everything. I know you can just meat food into jars filled with salt or something and that'll make it keep." Klindi says shrugging. "Oh, some cordage would be nice too, and crossbow bolts."

Ragnar says he found something that might be useful for preserving food and mentions the drying rack.

"Do you just hang the meat on the rack? Do we need salt for that too?" She asks. Ragnar says he doesn't know, and she continues. "Well, if you get one built we can at least test it with some leftover meat. It means you may need to guard it though. I'm sure it'll attract animals."

She leaves shortly afterwards, and Ragnar takes the opportunity to rest from his travel.

The next night he wakes up gets started on the drying rack. Trees are in no short supply, but He lacks a hachet to chop it with so he has to rely on his knife to hack at the branches. It's slow going and hard work, but he makes the branches into poles. At that point though he realizes he doesn't have anything to tie the poles together.

He then remembers the rope, and goes back to the cave. Ragnar doesn't want to put the egg directly against the ground, so he grabs some grass, wildflowers, and shiny rocks to place it on. Since he is at it, Ragnar cleans the area. Some of the bones look kind of cool, so the red kobold pushes a few femurs and some ribs into the packed earth on the doorway.

He then leaves the cave and carefully divides the rope, tying it around the branches and propping the whole thing up.

The kobold steps back from his handiwork and nods proudly.

What does Ragnar do?
>>
>>3511912
We should expand the cave. If we plan to scout out and probably steal from the settlement, (since we're a thief) we need to have a place to store things, and eventually, when we have enough space, we could actually start the nest like we've been planning

Lets expand the cave a bit, nesting/storage room?
After that we should prepare to the trip to stilt-legs settlement. Gather some food ect.

Around this time, Klindi returns from her hunt with a piglet beneath her arm.

"Hey, look what I found! I think it's a runt from a boar litter. It was all by itself! I set that net you brought back yesterday as a trap, so if we are lucky we'll have a bunch of extra meat!" The female kobold cackles.

Still having some moonlight left, Klindi goes to work butchering the piglet into smaller pieces. Ragnar asks her to cut out thin strips for him the hang on the rack.

Ragnar says that before he leaves for the stilt-leg settlement he wants to have a place to put what he brings back, and decides to try and dig a store room. Because they are on the top of a hill, Ragnar doesn't have much choice but to go down. This slows down the work, since he has to haul a lot of the dirt and rock out of the cave before he can continue. Klindi finishes her task, and leaves again to check the trap she set. He is still digging by the time she returns, carrying a squirrel. They eat, and then Ragnar goes back to digging.

"Hey, if you are going to stay up late, could you set up that rack thing yourself before heading to bed? They have to dry in the sun or something right?" She says yawning and picking a nice corner of the cave to curl up in.

Ragnar can easily keep track of the time as he has to ferry the dirt out of the cave, and as dawn approaches he grabs the cuts of piglet and drapes them all over the rack. The red kobold decides to call it a day soon after.

----

Ragnar wakes up next dusk when Klindi gets up. He yawns, and then gets up to check on the rack. Klindi takes two slices and hands one to Ragnar.

The meat smell is certainly stronger, and it tastes good. However he don't think it dehydrated it like the rack is supposed to. It's definitely dryer, but more on the outside layers.

He then goes to work, and about midway through the night his room is finished. It's not quite as large as the one above, but it'll do for now.

What does Ragnar do?

Head to the beach and start off following it in the direction that the group of stilt legs were going.
Stay in the cover of the trees for cover, don't walk along the sands of the beach just stay close enough to see it.
>>
>>3512411
It seems that it should've worked. Did we leave it in direct sunlight? Did we cut it with or against the grain? Smoke is an additional preserving method that keeps pests away and ads some flavor, but it isn't required for the drying process. Fire would heat up and cook the meat, but not dry it in a way that'd preserve the meat.
>>
>>3512465
>>3512578
>>3512596
Um, the food isn't really preserved yet.
>>
>>3512607
I know, we'll need to find a way to improve our drying technique. Maybe steal some salt from the town or get a better knife to cut thinner slices.
Still it's probably best we leave sooner then later, we can survive until the town and eat there.

Ragnar appreciates his work, feeling like the only thing it needs now is supports or something similar. Perhaps he can dig up a stump or get more branches later.

For now he thinks he should start heading up towards the settlement, and after taking one more piece of the slightly dried meat as a quick snack he leaves.

He reaches the place where the stilt-legs fought the mer-stilt-legs as dawn starts to approach, and decides to camp around there. The kobold notices that the bodies are gone, which could be explained by wild animals. The only problem with taht theory is that the weapons they had are missing as well.

The kobold digs himself a hole under a bush and lays down, letting himself drift off to slip while thinking on how to improve the drying process of the meat.

---

Ragnar decides to take the stilt-legs advice and travel along the cliffs away from both the beach below and the forest to the east. If they are scared of things among the trees, he should probably be as well.

The kobold must admit he misses Klindi's company. She was far better at catching food than he was, and the red kobold has to rely on the occasional small animal, grubs, berries, and carrion as he makes his way north.

About a day off the kobold starts to feel like he is being followed. On occasion he thinks he hears hushed noises, the rustling of some leaves, or the snapping of twigs.

The kobold continues forward like he hasn't noticed and takes stock of his surroundings. To the west is the cliff, which is far too steep and high to escape down. To his east is the forest of course, but Ragnar can't tell exactly where the noises are coming from and it's possible he may be ambushed. Going north and south the top of the bluff is relatively flat and open, but if whatever is following him is fast he may not be able to escape.

Ragnar continues north, but as he does he is becoming more and more convinced he is being followed. He notices the piece of land he is on juts out like a tooth into the sea, so when he reaches the tip he dashes forward and into some bushes, hoping to ambush his stalker.

It takes a few moments, but suddenly from around the corner a kobold steps out onto the clearing. She is looking around, clearly confused.

This kobold is female with purple pigmented scales, curved horns, and rather beady eyes. She is wearing green, patched rags and is carrying a bindle.

Ragnar calls to the kobold, who turns in surprise towards him.

"Oh! Hello." She says, looking nervously around. "My name is Nizra. Um, how are you?"

Ragnar introduces himself, and asks what she is doing here.

"Err, well my nest to the east was sorta attacked and now I'm looking for a new one." She says, taking the bindle off her shoulder. "I saw you, and figured if I followed you I could find another nest!"

Ragnar nods in understanding and says that he himself came from a destroyed nest to the east. He then says that he is trying to start a new one.

"Oh! Can I be a part of it? It's better if we all stick together, right? How many others are there?" Her stomach rumbles, and then she asks. "Hey, I don't suppose you have any food do ya?"

Ragnar hands over some berries he gathered during the night and admits that an increase in numbers would be nice. He asks what the purple kobold can do.

"Oh, well in my old nest I was mostly nest maintenance... You know, digging tunnels, preparing food, watching hatchlings... That sort of thing." Nizra lists off.

Ragnar says that she could be very useful and that he welcomes her, but for now he is heading to a stilt-leg settlement to the north first. He's going to steal some stuff, and Nizra can help by carrying more of the loot back when they are done.

"W-what? We are going towards the stilt-legs? But that's really dangerous!" Nizra says in shock.

Ragnar says they are really not, as long as you don't get caught, and even then if they are babies or elders they can still be taken down. Ragnar looks the other kobold over and asks if she has a weapon on her.

"Nah, just this stuff." She says, lowering her bindle and unwrapping it.

Inside is a rather beaten looking metal pot. In the pot is some cloth, a spoon, and a few small, scratched bits of gems.

As she wraps it back up the red kobold thinks of what to do next. She doesn't seem that confident in her ability to sneak around the city. He supposes he could just send her south along the coast, or walk her back himself. On the other claw he could still have Nizra come along and have her hide in a hole somewhere until he gets back.

What does Ragnar do?
>>
>>3516228
Exactly how many gems does she have? If it is enough we might not have to steal anything.
>>
>>3516228
Walk her partly back home and then point her the rest of the way towards it. She should be able to get there on her own.
>>
>>3516228
Well you don't have to come into the town, you could wait outside of it while I go get a few things.
It's more time efficient to do it that way but if you're not confident in your ability to hide close to a stilt leg town then I can lead you back to the nest or give you directs for it if you confident in your ability to follow directions.
>>
>>3516251
I have to disagree remember the humans wouldn't even walk through the woods and they had numbers. this tells me that it's too dangerous to let her walk alone.
>>
>>3516228
How far have we travelled already and how confident does she feel about hiding quietly outside the settlement if we go in to loot? I don't think she has the nerves to go in with us and she seems like she might be lacking the worldliness to navigate to the new nest safely on her own.
>>
>>3516270
I agree with this guy
>>
Extra pair of claws to carry the goods back home would be good, but we'd had to look after her and hunt food for two.

Anyway either she waits for us outside the settlement or we take her all the way back to nest.
>>
Okay fellas. Quick question. What other types of kobolds do you guys think we should look out for?

I personally think another hunter would be great. Or a herbalist/medic.
>>
>>3516228
Take her with us, live her on the outskirts of the town.
>>
>>3517112
Well we don't really get to be choosy in our situation, it'll be whatever kobolds that survived a raid we happen to run into. It's surprising enough that a tunnel kobolds like her survived a raid in the first place, (suspiciously so if you ask me.)

But in the interests of having a good time...
I think it would be good to run into kobolds with different skills because they'll be teaching those skills to the next generation.
A shaman would be good, so could a warrior or dragon worshipper(?) or a kobolds that's actually good at making things like a tinkerer.
We'll just have to see what we get, but if there's so many nestless kobolds running around maybe we should put up a few markers around the place so we can try find them.
>>
>>3517112
Weaker than us probably. We don't want to have some muscle head throwing weight around and making dumb decisions. As this >>3517141 Anon said we don't really have control over it. We should take in whoever we meet, in case of need our new nest could use a craftsman.

We have food source from hunter, we have builder with our new find. Our character is kind of wild card, we can provide tech/food/tools/information and many more.

>>3517141
>It's surprising enough that a tunnel kobolds like her survived a raid
The one surviving are either the ones that were out or deep in the tunnels. So someone maintaining tunnel surviving makes sense.
>>
Hey guys, I've been thinking and I think we should heavily invest in home security as time goes on. The last nests probably go wrecked because the only things defending them were midgets with scales and spears. However, if we build our caverns and the surrounding area full of traps we could easily dissuade stilt-leg incursions. A good thing to do would be to build hidden pits full of punji sticks or false tunnel systems with dead ends that can then be blocked up and filled with poison gas while the stilt-legs are still inside.
>>
>>3517208
Nah man that will have the opposite of the intended effect. we will have "adventurers" knocking down our door to clear the newly discovered "dungeon".
>>
>>3516228
I say bring her along. We don't know how much we might need to carry back. And worse, carrying stuff back alone would make us vulnerable. Just a loose branch tripping us would be a threat if we got so much loot it obscures our vision. I say we make use of her as a spare pair of hands. Given her personaility. this might be the only time she ever gets to do something mildly dangerous.
Obviously we wont bring her into the actual village, but close by. She could even perhaps provide a distraction if we get caught. Bang her pan a bit and then flee.

Ragnar looks at the gems again. They are little bigger than a pebble and a bit scuffed, probably not worth much... They are still shiny though. The red kobold says that she could just follow along with him and then hide when they get close to the settlement. He could walk her back, but they are only a night away from the stilt-legs and it would be kind of annoying to walk all the way there and all the way back.

"Hmm, I still don't think it's very smart to get close to the stilt-legs, but I'll follow along." Nizra says a bit apprehensively.

Nizra and Ragnar walk north a long the bluff and after some time the female kobold asks, "So... What's your nest like? Are there lot's of other kobolds?"

Ragnar says they've pretty much only just started. There nest has no real supplies and only two burrows. For now it's only him and Klindi. He explains she is a huntress, and she has been quite good at keeping them fed.

"Oh! Well that's good! I've mostly had to scavenge around since I had to run from my old nest.." Nizra says sighing. "So what did you do in your old nest."

He explains he was a thief, which is why he is heading to the stilt-leg settlement in the first place.

"Oh! Well that explains why you aren't that afraid of them." She says happily. "Hey, you said you just started right? What all were you going to try and find?"

Ragnar explains, and then she continues. "See if you can grab some simple tools as well like hammers or saws or the like... Oh! And anything that could help with pottery or claymaking."

The kobold hadn't considered tools other than getting a hand axe or a woodcutter's axe. Those things could be a good idea too.

What does Ragnar do?
>>

You're right, the more tools the better. It'll make making the nest stronger easier. Though what would we use pottery tools for? Do you know how to use them?

The more Ragnar thinks, the more he realizes how useful just those basic tools would be. The kobold asks Nizra if she can make pottery.

"I never got to work with my nest's potter. We used a ton clay pots for food and stuff though, so I'm guessing we'll need the claymaking tools some point." Nizra says shrugging.

Ragnar nods, and says that maybe while he's there he'll try to figure out how the stilt-legs preserve food. He was going to try to find salt for sure. Nizra agrees with this idea, and Ragnar mentions he made a drying rack.

"Oh! Well that'll work out then. Once it gets warm enough we may be able to sun-dry things too, we'll see." the female kobold says, getting excited. "Hmm. How are we carrying all this? Maybe you can find a cart or something?"

Ragnar says he isn't sure that'd be a good idea. It'll definitely let them carry much more, but the cart would probably have to be pretty small, and since they'll be off-roading part of the way it may break or have to be carried.

They turn a corner, and spot far in the distance a city nearly covering a peninsula. Granted, the peninsula is knife-like and stabs into the sea quite far. Ragnar wasn't suspecting this, and Nizra even less so. They stand in awe for a long moment before the female kobold breaks the silence.

"W-whoa... I never knew there were so many stilt-legs..."

Ragnar climbs a nearby tree to get a better look.

This is no mere settlement, but a whole infestation! Ragnar scans the city some more, and notices the large amount of strong docks sitting in the port, along with the tall buildings and high walls that make up the city proper. Pointing into the sky triumphantly like a figurehead of ship was a colossal statue of a predatory bird. This place is obviously doing quite well. There is at least two military structures, one on the point of the knife and one higher up on a hill from it and facing south towards the kobold. It's also obvious from here that the city can afford to light the largest streets.

What does Ragnar do?
>>
>>3519367
This is good news, it means they have so much stuff that they won't notice basic things going missing for some time.
>>
>>3519367
We should go there and attempt to scout it out finding places to hide before we take things.
>>
>>3519367
Oh jeeze. This just got daunting. More targets, but more chances to be seen too. Still we came this way. Let's keep heading forward, going inland if we have to. We don't have any spoils yet.
>>
>>3519367
Tell her to hide while we scout the outlaying houses and look for salt, ingormation and the tools
>>
>>3519367
This heist just turned into a scouting mission. Going in blind and trying to steal will only get us killed, as such, I think we scout out the area and come back at a later date or with the minor amount of gems we have to try to trade for what supplies we can.
>>
>>3519367
We'll have to be very careful and stick to stealing stuff from the edges for now so we can make a quick getaway.
Get closer to the town sticking to the trees and bushes like glue, look for a good way in.
>>
>>3519445
Trying to trade would get us killed. We just need to be careful.
>>
>>3519445
Nah, we are not going back empty handed, we scout and grab what we can, there's no sense in coming here and then coming later, we are already here.

We don't need to go in the city, I bet we can find what we need on the houses on the outskirts
>>
>>3519552
Agreed, we're not walking all this way to go back with nothing.
>>
>>3519367
City this close to our nest? Not good at all, no wonder that nests are being destroyed.

Lets find hiding spot for her and start looking for good stuff at outskirts
>>
>>3520043
we may have to consider moving our nest, the stilt-legs said they will deal with the mer-stilt-legs, and they live by the sea, like we do, it's possible that they find us
>>
>>3520091
while I can see your point the humans also pointed out that the forest is by there standards dangerous. which means for kobolds It is probably downright lethal. no matter what we end up doing we are running a risk, I like the odds of beating a human more than that of a bear or worse.
>>
>>3520221
the thing is that bears usually come alone, the stilt leggers don't

but you make a good point, our options would be the mountains, the forest or we could move further away from the settlement to be more safe.

we should walk in the opposite direction by the coast to see if there are any other villages on that direction, we could simply move further from the city to not risk much but closer to a smaller village, it would be easier now that we have just started.

but then, that's just an idea
>>
>>3520231
With the mountains, I worry that we will have to contend with dwarfs. Which in my opinion are worse than humans as we would have to actively compete with them for living space.

I believe that with appropriate caution and misdirection we can keep our current location hidden.
>>
>>3520235
Yes I think we can keep ourselves hidden two, the important thing is not being seen in the first place. As long as they're not looking for kobolds they probably won't find our nest.
Humans have their own thieves, (probably) we just have to make sure we try make it look like a stilt leg did it and not leave behind and foot prints or claw marks.

This mission has gone from stealing and scavenging to scouting. It would be dangerous for Ragnar to take too much without casing the area first, at least he assumes. He's never been to a stilt-leg settlement this large before.

Ragnar asks Nizra to burrow herself somewhere nearby for the time being, and that he'll be back before sunrise. She nods, and disappears under a bush after telling him to be careful.

The red kobold keeps to the bushes the best he can while he continues to walk. He isn't sure how far out the stilt-legs will patrol, but if he can see the city from here then it's probably not a great sign. Sure enough about an hour after separating from Nizra he spots what appears to be a watchtower standing sentry over the bay opposite the town.

It's little more than the tower, a few crates, and a wooden fence. The area facing the forest has been cleared of trees, giving it a semi-circle of about 100 feet of clearing. The kobold guesses this was to make sure that no one can sneak up on the guards. The kobold doesn't see anyone patrolling outside, but he can see some dim light coming from the top of the outpost.

The kobold guesses that he is probably another 2-3 hours from town if he walks around the top of the bluff, and wonders how many of these will be on the way.

The kobold then wonders if maybe their nest is too close to the settlement. Is three to four days out from the city too close? He'll have to ask the others about it when he gets back.

What does Ragnar do?

Ragnar decides to try to skirt the watch towers and just get straight to the city. He runs into two other outposts on the way, one at the tip of the bay, and another about thirty minutes from the city. Luckily they are set near areas meant to catch armies of invaders, not single kobolds trying to sneak by. The kobold is beginning to wonder if he'd be able to get a cart past all this.

The first thing the kobold spots over the trees is a wall nearly as tall as the hill beside it. The bleached white stonework seems even more impressive as most of the trees within shooting distance have been cut away with the only foliage left being a decorative line going up both sides of the road leading to the gate. The walls have alcoves and slits for archers, and the red kobold thinks he sees guards moving a defensive weapon around.

Even at this time of night the stilt-legs are still busy around here. It's hard to tell with the numbers, but they seemed to be gathered around the huge gate as well as the shacks, wagons, and stands up the road from them. There is also a nearby campsite filled with tents. There are so many stilt-legs that the kobold can hear the bustle from his vantage point.

Along with these is a larger, more permanent looking wood building. It's by no means pretty, but it looks sturdy enough.

What does Ragnar do?

>>
>>3523043

>>
>>3523043
I imagine we're going through the trees and not straight down that road. But take note of that road and where it goes, because that'll be the path to more stilt-legs. Remembering that general direction for later might help us out.

So far this has been a pretty good scouting mission. We've gotten to see quite a bit, even if we've yet to get into the town. I think it's worth going in and seeing how close we can get. But at the slightest hint that they've caught us we run and then never come here again. I want to steal something just to see if it's even feasable with so many eyes that could spot us. From that wooden building maybe.
>>
>>3523043
Lets scout out the tent camp first and then take a look at the slum housing outside the gate. we can then decide if we want to try and steal either of them or try and move into the city.

Ragnar stares up at the wall. He isn't even sure if he could climb that thing, much less without being spotted. He'll have to go through the front, or find another way.

For now though, he'll just worry about looking around, grabbing anything easy, and getting away.

He sneaks closer, scurrying through the foliage on the outskirts of the highway.

There are a lot of different kinds of people here. It's probably the most diverse he's ever seen in a stilt-leg settlement. He sees the normal kind, the pointy-eared annoying ones, the green ones, the squat ones and...

...Gnomes!

...Anyway he'll worry about that later. Ragnar has to decide where he'll start his raid. He supposes he could get to the camp site easily, and his claws can make short work of tent fabric. Those stilt-legs don't look particularly rich though, so he's not sure how much they may have.

The stalls would probably have the most shinies, but at the same time they are closest to the crowd and the front gate. Probably not the best direction to go right away, or until he knows the area better.

The last is the large wooden building. The front side of it looks like it's busy, but the back is unlit on the outside, and he can see a backdoor to the kitchen and to a cellar there. No telling how busy the inside will be though.

What does Ragnar do?

Ragnar looks for any guard patrols nearby. There are some on the main road as well as in front of the large wooden building, as well as a ton near the gate. The fact they aren't near the back means the cellar is a good second option for basic tools and the like. For some reason, the stilt-legs usually keep them in their lower floors, or in shacks separate from their houses.

Luckily, there don't seem to be any guards near the tent city, and Ragnar crawls close to the ground to stay near the short brush. It's odd, he wonders if one of the stilt-legs comes by every once and a while and cuts it.

The tents are all arranged in a circle around a large central fire which the stilt-legs like oh so much to gather around. There seems to be some lively conversation going on, as well as music. It's hard to see, but some seem to be playing cards, and also drinking.

The voices seem to be speaking stilt-leg, but there are too many he can't really make out any conversation.

He can tell some of the tents are occupied because of the loud snores, but he can't be sure of some of the others.

What does Ragnar do?
>>
>>3524888
Cut into the ones that have snoring, at least we know the occupant is asleep.

I have to disagree imagine going to sleep and then being awoken by a kobold you would probably go ape shit on that little fucker.
>>
>>3524904
It's better then walking into a tent that could have an awake occupant. We can't tell if the tents that have don't have any noises coming from them any anyone in them, and even if we're lucky and pop into an empty one the owner could come back at any time and catch us.
At least picking a snorer means we know where they are.
>>
>>3524918
I can see your logic and I will agree there is a risk in going for an empty tent. However, this camp seems to be throwing some kind of party I'm willing to bet that anyone not already asleep is going to stay at the party think about college parties those don't stop till the booze is gone and the sun is out.

Ragnar looks around the camp a bit more. There are at least two dozen stilt-leg around the fire, most of fighting age, but a few gruffer looking eldery people playing cards or otherwise sitting in grumpy circles and talking. He thinks he finds two prime targets for his thievery. One has a very loud sleeper inside it, and the kobold finds it hard to believe anyone would attempt to sleep in the same tent as such a person. He isn't sure what he'll find, but it is unlikely he'll be bothered there if he doesn't alert the sleeper.

On the other claw, there is a large tent close to the fire that looks interesting. The nearby lightsource illuminates the tent in a way that it casts shadows, and he is quite sure that it's empty save for a small chest or crate and some bedding. They shouldn't be able to see him from the other side, but it would be much harder for Ragnar to tell if someone was coming into the tent.

What does Ragnar do?

So... let's go for the sleeper. Just, before going in, listen to make sure the ripping did not wake him up. Pause until we are sure he's still snoring, and then go in.

Ragnar creeps over to the sleepers tent, though he wonders if he should have bothered. The stilt-leg is so loud he probably could have ran up to the tent. The red kobold carefully extends a claw and cuts a small hole near the base of the tent.

Peaking in, he sees a blanket wrapped stilt-leg asleep in one corner. TheThe snoring is even louder with the hole, and even before entering he can smell alcohol. He cuts a larger hole, and after another look at the sleeping creature he goes through the backpack.

He finds a few more pairs of clothes, some dry bread and cheese, 15 copper pieces, and a hatchet.

"Clearly on the poor side." Ragnar thinks as he stuffs everything but the clothes into his side packs. He then realizes that he could just use the backpack instead of his side packs, and transfers the clothes out and his loot back in.

For now sneaking around with a backpack should be alright, but if it starts to get heavy it'll make him slower and easier to see.

Ragnar decides that this is good enough loot for the camp site. That chest in the empty tent is tempting, but it's just too risky at the moment with all the stilt-legs around. He second guesses himself with the thought of the shinies that could be within, but then the kobold remembers that he is only looking for basic tools. He squeezes through the hole in the tent and cuts across the grass to get to the large wood building.

The structure has a back door with a wooden trash bin beside it. The kobold gets a whiff of what seems to be cooking meat coming from the back entrance, and taking a peak into a window near the door reveals a relatively clean and well stocked kitchen. The kobold doesn't look too long, as there are at least three stilt-legs in there cooking. He makes his way to the cellar doors, only briefly stopping to look at the other side of the building. Most of the commotion is happening in the front, but there is a large window on the side that he can glance into.

Ragnar can't see much from this angle, but he thinks he sees some stilt-legs sitting at a table eating, drinking, and laughing. The noise is certainly much clearer from this side, though there is so much of it he can't pick out any useful tidbits of information. Ragnar puts that out of his mind and returns to the basement entrance only to find the thing padlocked and chained.

The red kobold huffs. If he had his toolkit he could pop this lock easily, but in his haste from his previous nest Ragnar wasn't able to grab the tools. Ragnar then remembers the hatchet he just found, which may be a good way of opening the cellar door, if a bit loud.

Another possibility is that he could try to find the key, though that would almost certainly involve going inside the building.

A third but by no means final option is that he could simply burrow into the cellar. If he's lucky the room won't have stone walls.

What does Ragnar do?
>>
>>3526940
I see stone at the bottom of the building, it probably extends underground.
>>
>>3526940
This mission has already paid for itself, as we now have a backpack and hatchet. I say we cut and run. but first, we should listen in on the humans that are taking in the dining room. by moving under the window and listening, as it may provide valuable information.
>>
>>3526940
use the hatchet as a lever and try to loose the door handle that the chain is holding instead of hacking away at it, that seems less noise
hook the axe under it and jerk like you would a hammer trying to get a nail loose
>>
>>3526940
If the handles are wooden, we should aim for those rather than the chain itself. Hey, maybe we could even take the chain, never know what we might be able to do with it later, but could be useful. After we get the door open, I think we should dive into a bush and wait a little bit. We are in no rush, so giving a bit of time to see if we got caught sounds sensible.
>>

I can get behind this Idea I am changing from this >>3526956 to support this >>3527007
>>
>>3526940
Go at one of the handles with the hatchet if they're wooden, between swings pause and listen for any noise coming out way before taking another swing. If we here anything coming then go hide.
If the doors and handles are metal just go back to the tent with the chest.
>>
>>3527136
forget the tent with the chest ma,n we aren't here for gold we are here for tools.
>>
>>3527146
That's not exactly what I was hoping to find in the chest, if it's really a merchants tent then the chest might have some of their more expensive wears. Armor weapons tools potions ect ect, heck so long as whatever is in there is metal we can use it.
Honestly getting vast amounts of wealth would probably be bad for us, (unless we have to surround the egg in treasure to hatch it.) because we might get people searching for the lost gold come looking for us.
>>
>>3527176
ok, I can see the benefits of looking through the chest but I am not sure it's worth the risk. the owner of the tent could come back at any time and the last thing we need is to be caught in the act.
>>
>>3527188
You're not wrong, I voted the same way against going in previously. It'd only be if getting into this basement proves impossible though maybe we should avoid it and try something else.

Ragnar notices that the handles are made of wood. That would certainly be easier to break than the heavy metal chain. After glancing around, hesticks the hatchet between the door and the handle and pries it off causing the chain and lock to hang limply on the other knob.

The red kobold goes to pull off the other handle so he can take the lock and chain, but then remembers he would be able to get inside if he does that. He'll come back and take that later. Who knows? Maybe he'll need it later. The kobold then lifts the cellar door slightly to look inside, and seeing no one slips in.

There is no lit torches, so it sets the kobold's mind a little more at ease. Stilt-legs generally don't like walking around in the dark. Well, other than the shorter bearded ones and...

...Gnomes!

Anyway, the room opens up with little more than a support pillar as far as structures go. Right in front of the stairacse going down are a some barrels and boxes, as well as tables with chairs stacked atop them. The containers here contain dishware, plates, pots, and pans. The way it is wrapped and stacked makes Ragnar assume they are being stored away. In the same room are shelves with various linens stacked and recently laundered. There are even still some sitting a table in the process of being folded.

There is a door opposite the cellar staircase, and through it Ragnar sees another support pillar, boxes and barrels, as well as casks of large casks of wine and beer that are tapped. In addition, here as well wooden staircase going upwards to a door. The noise from above bleeds through the door, and the kobold assumes that it opens right into the main floor somewhere. There is a torch lit here, so whoever is upstairs probably comes down kind of often.

What does Ragnar do?
>>
>>3529458
Take the pots and pans then take a look in the boxes. if there is nothing of value we should leave quickly.
>>
>>3529458
Take one pot and two pans, we don't want to be a slow scaly noise maker with a bunch of metal rattling around in our backpack. Stuff some of the linens between the pot and pans to help prevent that even more.
After that start quickly checking the boxes for anything useful before getting out of there before someone comes back.

It might also be a good idea to put out that torch to at least give us a little more time before being spotted if someone comes in but doing that is inherently risky so I'll see what others have to say on OT before suggesting it.
>>
>>3529523
>OT

You know I saw this just as I was posting and I'm just disappointed in myself.
>>
>>3529523
I say leave the torch alone, the staff will immediately know something is off. If this was set in the modern day we might get away with that people turn lights off all the time. however this is set in fantasy, its someone expresses job to make sure that torches are lit. so when they come to the basement and suddenly find that one of the torches they lit is extinguished they will probably call for backup and then investigate.
>>
>>3529458
Are any of the casks small enough for us to carry? Having a water-tight container could be useful.
>>
>>3529458
Gets pots and pans and some cloth, if there is any tools grab and check the boxes, our time here is limited so make it fast
>>
>>3529523
I like the idea with pots and linen.
Boxes will probably contain some foodstufs, given they are near the barrels and in a cellar, I imagine tools would be in the room with linen and pans. Still, wouldn't hurt to check.

About the torch and stuff, here is my thoughts.
Assuming we left the cellar hatch door thingy closed(as we should just to not make it obvious someone is inside, thief should know that), I propose to:
>put backpack near the cellar hatch to the outside, ready for grabs when leaving
>leave double doors between cellar rooms wide open for quick getaway
>extinguish the torch for few extra moments of disorientation/stealthy getaway
>then check the boxes
>when leaving try to close boxes lids and both inner and outer cellar doors to throw off investigators as long as possible
Seems like a lot of work, but hear me out.
If torch is lit and humies see us, we are not only hot in the water, but also they will start sending out search parties to eradicate our brand new nest. No torch, no problem, unless its a gnome or other creature able to see well in the dark, but if there is a torch its probably there for a reason, so improbable.
Now, if we get caught, just immediately sneak away and out in the darkness, grabbing the bag on your way and book it.
That way even when they do catch us in the act, they probably wont know it was a kobolt, keeping the nest safe. Afterall not only kobolts are thieves.
If noone comes, just take the loot, erasing evidence of our presence the best we can. Torch could go out because of a number of reasons, even if a bit surprising, its not suspicious right away. Depending on whats in the crates, the missing stuff may be found out very soon or none at all. The busted hatch will probably be noticed in the morning, but by that time we will be well away, hopefully.
>>
>>3529654
All right you sold me on the torch issue and I support putting the pots and pans in cloth

Ragnar decides to grab some pots and pans. He doesn't know much about cooking himself, so he just grabs a pan and a pot, muffling them between some of the napkins from the nearby table. He then grabs a slightly larger one and puts it on his head, fitting it snuggly between his horns. Protection, and another pot the nest could use!

He makes to go to the other room, but then has an idea. If he cuts the lights, he'll have time to search the whole room. After all, the lights wouldn't be here if whoever ran the place didn't need them, which means if he snuffs the flame he'll have plenty of warning should someone try to come down stairs. They might not even see him at all!

Ragnar doesn't want to be weighed down while he is attempting this, so he drops off his backpack by the cellar door, grabs a bunch of the laundry, and then goes to snuff the torch. It's a little high up so he has to jump up to it, causing the torch sconce to creak worringly. When it's snuffed Ragnar drops the slightly charred napkins and checks the barrels of alcohol. They are lodged in place pretty well, and he doubts he'd be able to get it up the cellar stairs anyway. He wouldn't mind a taste if he could find a cup though. He briefly looks for an empty barrel since containers seem to be rather useful and in low supply at his nest, but there doesn't seem to be any here. Ragnar then goes to the crates near the stairs and starts opening them.

This one has potatoes... This one onions... That one carrots... Vegetables, bleh. Oh well, at least they are edible. What else is here?

Oh!

One of the barrels holds an opened sack of the salt. It's half full, but there is still far too much for him to carry. He'll have to find a way to carry it.

What does Ragnar do?
>>
>>3529765
Fill one pot with salt then place it at the bottom of the backpack If we have a lid for the pot make sure it's on first. then take a little of every vegetable putting them on top of the closed pot in the backpack. then put the pan back in the backpack. finally, fir the second pot with salt put a lid on it and carry it in front of you. then leave.
>>
>>3529777
To ensure everyone is clear as to why we want the salt, it was used in olden times to cure meet which makes it last longer.
>>
>>3529765
Pour a lot of the salt out into the barrel then take whatever amount that we can carry that's still in the sack with us, that way we get a bunch of salt and a sack we can use for something else later. Tie a knot in the end of the sack so the salt doesn't come out.
After this we should probably grab our bag take the chain and lock and get out of here before we're caught.
>>
>>3529765
fill the pot and tie a cloth in it to hold it inside
>>
>>3529783
This is a good idea we will do this instead of using a second pot
>>
>>3529779
Yes, and also in yee olden times it was incredibly valuable. So there's that. No telling if that's true for here too though, magic might make the process of getting salt much easier thus cheaper.
>>
>>3529784
and we can do this for the first pot.
>>
>>3529765
>salt
Nice. Pour some into the pot and put that pot on the bottom of the backpack. It may be a bit uncomfortable depending on the size of the pot, but its quick, simple and works without having to look around for container.
Put the rest of pans on top of saltpot.

Other option would be to simply pour some salt out of the bag(onto the ground or into a pot or barrel if we are feeling nice) and take the whole bag with whatever salt is left inside, put it into backpack.

Anyway, I think thats all to do here, lets loot salt, take backpack and get out of here.
>>
>>3529790
So that's a no to the vegetable looting then?
>>
>>3529765
He could put it in the pot.
>>
>>3529794
Ragnar didn't seem very interested in them, not a first choice of a food for a kobold I assume. Salt seems way more immediately important.
Also, sea is salty, maybe we should look into letting water dry out and take a look at whats left afterwards? Make our own, if a bit dirty seasalt?
>>
I want to point out how cute Ragnar is with the pot Helm on

>>3529806
In that case wouldn't it make more sense to grab more pot/pans to increase our future ocean salt generation?
>>
>>3529794

>>
>>3529811

>>

>>

>>3529765
OP will this be the final update for the evening or are you planning to run longer tonight since its the weekend?
>>
>>3529822
Well we obviously don't like them whatever the case may be, we've made that obvious enough.
>>
>>3530006
True enough, however, give the current food situation back at the nest and the fact we are currently relying on hunting/gathering methods to find food I would say it's prudent not to turn our nose up at a chance to increase our food stocks.
>>
>>3529765
We have a hunter back home, and the other kobold was a chef right? They can handle food stuff, we dont need to take any veg. The salt and pots and pans are the most important. Although... If this is the last place we plan to rob before leaving, then we might as well pack to full and then leave. Yeah, we could snack on the veg on the trip back. I don't think we'll find anything else useful that we wont have to drop a pan to carry with us. And we got enough loot that checking further would be a big risk. I'm happy to take these last bits and then just leave. We did great! Pans, hatchet, salt, bag. This is a victory, we can quit whilst we're ahead.
>>
>>3529765
Take salt as much as we can carry and get out (without dropping any of the previously looted items). Because we live in a forest. Plenty of berries, wild onions, roots and other stuff.

Ragnar grabs the sack of salt and attempts to pour it out on the floor out of spite and because it's too heavy. Unfortunately because of it's weight he can't lift it out of the barrel, so just scoops out what he can into the container and when it's light enough the kobold ties the bag shut and drags it back to his backpack. Ragnar then removes everything, puts the salt near the bottom, and then stacks his loot as well as a a bunch of vegetables on top to secure it in place. He hoists it onto his back with some difficulty.

The kobold hopes he has enough salt. He isn't sure how much Nizra will need to use to preserve Klindi's catches. He got the salt rather easily however, so hopefully it won't be as difficult in the future if he needs to find more.

He is quite happy with his haul for now, and decides to book it before he is caught by any stilt-legs. He scampers out of the cellar, making sure to close the door silently behind him. Ragnar then stays as low as he can with the heavily laden pack and dashes to the decorative bushes and trees on the outskirts.

As far as he can tell he was unseen. Another successful raid!

The kobold then scratches his chin in thought.

You know...

He could store away this pack in the bushes, and then go back for more. He doesn't think he could carry more himself, but if he can drag back some extra he can get Nizra to carry it. He had been hoping to find a cart or something similar, but as far as he has seen so far there hasn't been any small and unguarded enough for him to use. Perhaps he's being too greedy to consider that though?

What does Ragnar do?
>>

Nope its time to GTFO, we have had a very successful raid accomplished all our goals and all undetected. Now is not the time to push our luck. let go meet up with Nizra.

We still need to get some more tools if at all possible.

>>

I don't know man, we have already committed two thefts within close proximity of each other and the only other place we have yet to check is the cart moving toward the main gate. If we get more, how will we be able to carry that stuff and the stuff we find on the second run? The backpack already seems pretty full. If we do steal anything, it'd either need to be something that's easy to carry, mad easy to carry, or we'd need to steal another backpack.
>>
>>3531901
aside from concerns about carrying space, we have to remember we have already hit both tent camp and the tavern. It's only a matter of time until the theft sites are found and the guards are alerted. we need to go!
>>
>>3531867
I don't know if this was really necessary, I did vote for stealing more but I was alright with just going back now because it was safer even if we didn't get all the tools we wanted.

>>3531901
We had side bags apparently, we could use those. Not sure how much we could realistically fit in them however.
And we'd be having our buddy kobold help us take the stuff back. It'd just be a bit more work carrying all that stuff at once until we get to her.
>>
>>3531912
Well, logically speaking, the first theft site was occupied by what I'm assuming is a pretty heavy sleeper and nothing major was stolen from the second site besides extra stuff that was in storage. The only real way for the alarm to be raised is if somebody notices the handle broken off of the cellar door and nobody really has a reason to check that in the short-term. If we had stolen that chest/crate from the other tent, than I would be a lot more worried.
>>
>>3531928
The way I look at is a cautious thief is a good thief and will likely never be caught. looking at the objectives we set out to complete; we have tools for building and gathering, tools for cooking and preserving meats and a backpack for supply raids. by all measures, this mission has been a smashing success. Any more thefts at this point are gratuitous only increase our risk of being found out and potentially captured or at worst killed.

It would be useful in making a very strong snare trap, or if we ever get a prisoner. And it's just dangling there! It's take just a minute at most to nab it! Then we can go find Nizri.

Ragnar decides to leave for now. It's very important that he not be greedy considering how few of them they have in their nest, and that he is the only male. Before he leaves though, he drops his backpack and dashes back to grab the chain and lock. This may come in handy later.

The read kobold starts his way back from the city, retracing his steps. He finds the process a bit harder considering how much wider and heavier he is because of the full backpack. He finds himself unable to enter some tree trunks for instance, or to fit between some closely grown trees or on/under branches. The way back is rather uneventful until he gets to the second of third guard posts.

Because of the thick brush, he has to walk close to the watchtower, and while he does a trio of guards comes by walking towards the tower on their patrol. A dog is with them, and it's head perks up as it sniffs at the air.

Ragnar grimaces and presses himself behind the bush he was hiding behind. He watches as the dog steps away from the guards who are entering the watch tower and starts stalking towards the kobold, sniffing at the ground. It's then that he notices that it is not in fact, a canine.

The creature's brown body is sleek and cylindrical, the head is small in comparison to it's body while it's tail is nearly one third of it's total length. This tail tapers to a long, rudder-type roudn tail. It's feet are webbed, and it has small claws and fangs. It's nose twitches as it tracks his scent, and it's beady eyes look around for it's prey.

The kobold takes stock of his surroundings. Most of the west and east is heavy brush, while the sheer cliff to the beach is to the south. The north is forest, but the watchtower and the creature are there as well.

What does Ragnar do?

Ragnar pushes his backpack the best he can under a nearby bush and then crouches, ready to pounce once the beast comes around the corner. He strikes, but the guard creature is slightly faster, and though the kobold was aiming for it's head he ends up hitting it mid-body.

The beast cries out in pain and to alert the guards, and not a second later Ragnar hears something.

"Tango? Where are you buddy?" a stilt-leg says from the guard tower. Ragnar raises the axe to strike again, but the marine mammal is already slinking away. Not wanting to reveal himself, Ragnar takes the opportunity to run. He grabs his backpack and does his best to dig underneath some brush. A bell starts to ring out, and the kobold hears the rush of feet in his direction.

Ragnar barely has the time to hide himself fully before some armored stilt-legs carrying swords and torches come from around the bush.

"Look here, blood." One of them says.

The other holds his torch up high and scans the surroundings. He then examines the area with the blood, and then takes a walk all along the thick underbrush searching. "Hmm. I see some tiny tracks here, but I don't know what they are."

"Poor Tango, he must have spooked an animal." His cohort remarks.

"Think he'll be okay?" the other says.

"He should be fine. Hopefully he doesn't get Rabies. Think Grissela knows any spells for curing diseases?" One of them asks as they both walk back towards the watch tower.

Once he is sure they are gone, Ragnar crawls out from under the brush and begins to stamp out the area until it's a mess of matted grass and dirt. There, now no one should be able to recognize those tracks!

He looks around just to be sure it's safe, and then starts back towards the nest.

The rest of the trip is uneventful luckily, and once he reaches the bush he left Nizra under he looks around. She isn't there, though it doesn't appear she was forced out of the hole. The kobold sighs and looks at the horizon. He can see the sun starting to come up, and he wants to find a safe spot before it gets too early.

Risking it, Ragnar faces the foliage and gives a whispered yell for Nizra.

"Thank the Horned Sorcerer you are alive! I was getting worried." Nizra says, poking her head out of a hallowed out stump. "I thought I'd be able to find some grubs here, but no luck. You got anything?"

The purplish kobold's stomach rumbles at this point.

Ragnar shows her the backpack full of loot and the female kobold says, "Blegh, vegetables... Hmm, oh nice! I like the kitchenware. No cordage though? Ah well, I can make my own I guess. Oh! And you got a decent amount of salt as well! That'll serve, at least for a little bit."

Go home, be careful about leaving tracks and tell Nizra to do the same, walk on harder ground rocks leafs and roots wherever possible.
We don't want to lead the stilt legs here back to the nest.
In the same vein as that wash off in the river next to our nest but down stream away from our nest.

Ragnar and Nizra continue their journey while looking for a place to sleep. They don't find a suitable place to rest until well into morning, and take the opportunity to rest into the night, eating some of their loot from the stilt-leg city.

The journey back seems somehow more pleasant. Perhaps because the anticipation of the city, he thinks he may have been acting more nervous than usual. His new companion is also certainly a welcome change. He always did feel safer with bigger numbers. Plus, she is slower than he is, so if anything attacks he can probably get away.

"So are there any little ones yet? Or eggs?" Nizra asks.

He says not yet, and she replies. "Ah, well I guess you did just get your nest started. Is your egg chamber well protected?"

Ragnar says that he only really has two rooms, neither of which are designated.

"Ah... Well perhaps that's why you don't have any eggs yet then?" She says, giggling.

What does Ragnar do?

We weren't too bothered by the concept of sex the first time it was brought up. I don't think whether we're a virgin or not we put a lot of value in it.
>>
>>3540607
We do have AN egg, but its not a kobold egg.
Maybe Nizra will know what kind of egg is it by chance?
Also, her know-how of digging and tunnel-making will surely help in both expanding and securing the nest from sudden collapse, and that means a place for eggs.
Also also, two females for egglaying.
>>
>>3540887
Do we know that's not a kobold egg?

No we don't. We took it because we thought it was a kobold egg and it was the biggest egg so it'd have the best chance of survival/have the strongest kobold.

Yes, but we don't KNOW it isn't. Plus kobolds fantasising about dragons is as normal as hating gnomes.
Right now it's a mystery egg, it could be anything there is a decent chance it's an anomaly large kobold egg since it was in a kobold nest. Nizra would almost certainly be able to tell if it is or not since she's spent a lot of time in a nest.

[Thread auto-sages after five days or a week or something. I have no control over it unfortunately. It's about the only thing I find a little annoying about /qst/. I quite like the longer text limit for instance.]

Ragnar says that he'll certainly get an egg chamber started as soon as he can. He's sort of worried about the whole nest collapsing, which is why he is glad Nizra appeared. Neither he nor Klindi know much about digging a burrow.

"Glad to be of help! Though, we should probably get some stores of food and stuff on top of that. If we can't feed the hatchlings then there is little purpose in having them." Nizra says, thoughtfully.

At the mention of hatchlings the red kobold thinks about the egg he carried from his own nest. He wonders if Nizra will recognize it, because Klindi didn't seem to think it was a kobold egg. Perhaps she knows more than the huntress?

After three more days Ragnar spots the area where the stilt-legs fought the mer-stilt-legs, and hours later they are back to the nest near dawn.

"On top of a hill? Interesting..." Nizra says, tilting her head. "I can try to work with that, though I'd prefer something closer to ground level. It'll make everything more stable."

They are about to walk into the entrance when two bodies come out and walk right into them.

"Oof!" Klindi says, stumbling slightly. Ragnar however, sees that there is a second kobold there he doesn't recognize. A green male wearing a bandanna and a cloak. The huntress catches his attention again by saying, "Hey no fair, I was supposed to be the one to surprise you with a new nest mate."

"My name is Nizra!" She says, raising a clawed hand happily. The stranger raises his claws in a wave and replies, "I'm Qrad, erm, so you are new too or what? I'm a bit confused here.

Klindi and Ragnar introduce and explain themselves, and then the red kobold asks where Qrad came from.

"I was... Err... Caught in one of our huntresss' traps. I was so hungry and I saw a dead squirrel. Grabbed it, and suddenly I was in a pit! I had pretty much dug myself out when Klindi came by. That was two or so days ago." He then sighs and says. "Had to flee my old nest because some stilt-legs attacked. I didn't even really know where I was going, so I'm kinda glad it worked out."

"A day or two? That means you are still newer. Ragnar found me about four days ago." Nizra says, triumphantly. Klindi asks what the new female can do, and after replying that she was mostly nest maintenance Qrad says,

"Oh! Me too, I was a digger in my old nest. Kind of weird to work on dirt again. My old nest was partially an old underground squat-leg structure so we had masons doing a lot of stonework." Qrad says grinning.

Since dawn is coming, they all go inside the nest. With the reunion no one is feeling particularly tired, and so talk excitedly while they enter.

It seems Qrad has been doing some work on reinforcing the nest. Lacking an axe, he had been mostly cutting large branches into logs with a large knife he has. At the top of the nest he made a more permanent rain-guard, and steps leading down into the nest. He made some sort of bark blanket for the huge egg, and put some sort of bracers on the lower floor holding up the dirt from above.

"How's it look? I don't really have any way to make boards, and I also don't have any nails so... Ya know, gotta work with what you got." Qrad says.

Ragnar pretends to be expertly examining the beams, and nods with a satisfied sound of approval.

"Whoa! Check out that egg!" Nizra's voice says from above.

"Yeah, Ragnar was carrying that around with him when we met. You know what it is? It's not a kobold right?" Klindi asks.

"Are you kidding? Look at that thing! Imagine a kobold trying to squeeze that out! I mean, it's glowing for another obvious fact. Also it's way darker than a regular egg. Also it's... Like, scaly? Leathery scaly? I don't know what this could be." Nizra says in shock. "It's beautiful though, isn't it?"

"Yeah, it's like. A shiny you know? The nest's biggest shiny for the moment." Qrad adds. "It's a nice mascot."

Ragnar spreads out his loot. He makes a show of presenting the hatchet, pots, pans, the chain and lock, the food, and most importantly the salt.

"Dang, no crossbow bolts? Ah well, I knew it was a long shot... This hatchet will be really useful though." Klindi says, hefting it. "We could even use the backside like a hammer."

"We can start salting and brining food too! If only we had more containers... Hrm..." Nizra says. "We have anything we can make into more containers? Maybe we could build some boxes or barrels? Or anyone know how to fire clay?"

"Well, we'd need nails for that, at least as far as I know. We could probably get a fire pit or something going... I'm not sure how to fire clay or anything like that though. It needs to be pretty hot right? That should be a separate room as well. We should probably make a room with a floor as food storage."

Ragnar asks if it's possible to grow the vegetables they got.

"Oh no, fields are too visible. Fields also attract animals, which attract hunters... And dead hunters attract adventurers." Qrad says, shaking his head angrily. "Besides. Their gross."

"Yeah, gross, but at least they'll keep for a while. Oh yeah, some animals got at the meat when I tried to hang it up. If we are drying stuff we'll probably need someone nearby to check on it" Klind says.

"Oh I dunno... Veggies are nice seasoning sometimes. Onions are nice when they are cooked. I like their spear leek as well... And hey! We could even make stews with a pot!" Nizra says.

What does Ragnar do?
>>
>>3543185
Take a short rest from all the traveling we did. Then you can get started on making that other room. It should be a breeze with four kobolds working on it and some even know what they're doing.
>>
>>3543203

>>
>>3543185
Stews sounds good for now to make the food last longer.

>>
>>3543185
Why not make and use glue instead of nails?
>>
>>3543185
Put the 15 copper coins next to the egg.
Well our diggers have their ideas for new rooms, while they work on those we should take our new hatchet and gather as much wood as possible to make everything from supports and tools to cooking food.
With four mouths to feed Klindi should go out hunting.
>>
>>3543283
You'd have to know how to do it first, I think you can make a primitive glue by melting down the days of animals but I'm not sure how to do that or if we'd need to do anything else.
>>
>>3543389
You just submerge cleaned hide in water and simmer until the water turns into a syrup. Filter it out, dry it, and than break it up into powder or chunks for long-term storage to be re-hydrated when needed.
>>
>>3543185
I think Ragnar needs to get some trees felled and some planks made up. We dont have nails so we'll have to rely on wedging them in place, or, maybe wooden stakes could work for now? At the least, we can prep some planks for flooring right? Let's do that. Klindi and Nizri should start on a stew, and Qrad should dig out an area to be the new food storage room. After the stew is done, perhaps we could sit around the fire and just celebrate some more. Share stories of our old nests. See if there is a common theme in how they were all destroyed.
>>
>>3543185
Talk about the stilt-leg city, our dairing raid, and the loot we made off with. Then on to expansion.

Ragnar says he is interested in trying this stew that Nizra mentioned, but she said considering the hour it's probably best that she make it tomorrow, especially since she'll need to start a fire to get it going.

The red kobold asks if they could make glue or something instead of needing nails. Nails might be a bit difficult to get considering they are made of metal.

"Glue? I mean, I know it can be made, but I don't know how." Qrad says, scratching his chin in thought.

"I think you can like boil animal parts to get glue? I feel like I may have seen something like that." Nizra says, her head tilted. "I think tree sap works well as glue too. Would either of those be good to put near preserved food? I mean, I bet it'd work well to tightly seal containers."

"Maybe you can try to get some info on glue next time you head to the settlement. Or info on how to make nails. Or I dunno, something like that." Klindi asks.

Ragnar responds that the city is way larger than they first expected. It stretched as far as the eye could see, and had buildings taller than some of the nearby hills. He isn't even sure how he'll get inside because of the large defensive wall, but if he does there is probably no end to the kind of things he could find there.

"Yeah, I've never seen a stilt-leg settlement that large before, it was terrifying!" Nizra says sadly. "But you know um... We are pretty close to the ocean, maybe you could try to find some fishing poles or nets? I have no idea how to make those, but they might be useful."

"Still want nails." Qrad says, grinning.

"And crossbow bolts! But yeah, maybe we should stick to the basics until we can get established. We need salt for preserving stuff right? Ocean water is pretty salty, can we use that to preserve stuff?"

"Ocean water is salty?" Nizra says. "Hmm... I wonder if there is actually salt in it. Can you show me tomorrow, Klindi?"

"It's pretty easy to get down. There is a sort of landslide area to the north that you can get to the bottom from. Just stay away from the crab cave." She says, smiling and chuckling.

Before heading to sleep, Ragnar puts the 15 copper pieces from the loot next to the egg. It's not much in the way of shinies for it, but it's a start.

---

The nest size having doubled, they decide that digging and reinforcing the room, and maybe getting some planks, should be first priority for the diggers. Qrad decides to start chopping trees with the hatchet, and Nizra says she'll start digging once she gets done down at the ocean, and also attempt to start a firepit to make the stew. Klindi of course, is going to go hunt. Ragnar asks what he can do.

"Oh, I thought you were gonna head back and grab stuff from the settlement." Klindi says, stopping in her tracks as she starts to leave. "I mean, if you were gonna stay at the nest maybe you can help one of the others?"

What does Ragnar do?
>>
>>3544976
how about we explore the coast on the opposite direction? a big city like that must have some fishing villages scatered around, and those would be easier to loot

If I start taking too much stuff from them too often the chances I'll be caught goes up, there's just so many stilt legs there I couldn't even get inside the town.

I'll go back there but it might be a while before I come back, I'm going to see if I can find a way to the city that doesn't go past the watch towers, and if I'm really lucky a way into and out of the city as well.

Klindi says he'll show Nizra the beach so she can get started on hunting right away. There are four of them now after all, so they'll need more food, and they'll need to start storing some as well.

"Sounds smart. I'll leave her to you then." Klindi says, waving back at him as she leaves.

Ragnar calls for Nizra, who is sitting near the egg looking at the pots he brought back from the stilt-leg settlement. The female kobold picks one of the larger ones with a lid and says, "Okay, ready!"

They walk north, and then hook to the west and make their way carefully down the landslide area.

Nizra rushes over to the water with the pot clutched in front of her. "Ooo, chilly. Is it really that salty?"

She bends over to stick her snout in the water, and pulls back almost immediately with a scrunched, disgusted face. "Ack... Yeah. It really is that salty."

She then looks up at at the sky and says, "Man, I think I've seen the moon more times recently than I ever have in my whole life! It's beautiful, but it's a bit too scary out here for me. I prefer a cozy cave personally."

She pauses for a second and then says, "I hope our nest grows really big soon..."

Ragnar says that he hops so as well, but everything one step at a time. He asks what she plans to do with the water she is going to take.

"Gonna see if I can make a brine out of it. We have a good amount of salt, but it'd still be best no to waste it if we can use the ocean." Nizra says as she takes the top off the pot and scoops up as much water as possible. "So Klindi said to watch out for crabs at a cave... Are they pretty dangerous? They aren't... Err, gonna come out of the water at me are they?"

What does Ragnar do?

"Don't worry Nizra, if any crabs attack, I'll beat them up for you!" Then start flexing.

Brine huh, so we just dunk some meat or veg into the sea water and leave it? Worth a test. As for storage we only have the salt bag and pans. We know the settlement has barrels so that'll be something to go for next time. After we're done here at the beach, if we still have the energy for it, I think we should explore the opposite direction of the settlement to see what's that way.

>>3545380
>and are still in fine condition without any repair work.
I have some doubts about that. If getting the wood into the cave was easier we could just wedge it in, but it'll need to be small enough to bring inside, so we can't rely on that. I'm still thinking wooden pegs will do us better than glue, though not as good as nails.

Maybe? We only saw them around a cave that might make a great nest if we can clear them out, they are crabs so they might go into the water but we haven't seen them anywhere but around the cave.

>>3545431
I think brine is concentrated sea water, basically almost a liquid salt?
You get sea water, let it evaporate then add more sea water.
>>
>>3545374
We don't know much about them but I imagine the big crabs aren't very keen on chasing kobolds that aren't carrying the little ones for any real distance considering we've kited them away from the little crabs before. I don't know if we should mention the mer-stilt-legs as she seems skittish about being outside already.

>>3545411
I think it might still be premature to start our own brood given the number of nests that have been dispersed so we might find more kobolds and even some who fled with eggs, also potentially going to need to flee if trouble finds us.

[Should probably sunset the thread soon. It's getting pretty low.]

Ragnar describes the crustaceans six pointy legs, their flat, roundish shelled body, their stalk eyes, and their pinching claws. , They are mostly one color, usually colors range from darkish green all the way to reddish brown! Sorta like a kobold really. He also says that crabs are pretty tasty.

"All the tasty stuff is dangerous in some way." Nizra says with a sigh.

Ragnar explains that they seem to range from the size of their fists, to as small as a pebble, and others still large enough to ride.

"Big enough to ride?! That sounds more than dangerous... Deadly in fact!" She exclaims in wonder. "How do those taste?"

The red kobold says that he hasn't tried the giant ones, but the cave that Klindi was talking about has at least two very large crabs inside it. He says that she shouldn't worry while he is around. He can protect her.

The red kobold then remembers the fish stilt-legs, and wonders if it's the best idea for them to be so close to the water. He hasn't seen them since the battle at the camp site, but he doubts that was the last of them.

"Hey, can we go see the crabs quick? M-maybe even catch some? I wanna try it..." She says, wiping drool away from her mouth.
