Another AMP shot finds the gunner of that Gatling cannon turned on you. The Stenos inside the artillery position seem to be rallying you noticed. They’re taking positions, firing back at the woods with their rifles, trying to coordinate with each other with their screeches and calls. But without a leader, they’re going to have a tough time doing anything worthwhile against your attack. You and Tombs stay down in your little ditch, watching them. They seem to be focusing primarily on the plasma fire on the woods, leaving maybe two Lizards to face the two of you. Right, they’re getting their priorities straight it seems. Tierney keeps firing down on them with the Plasma cannon, backed by Morrison and Godwin too.

Tombs leans up a bit, then says, “Only two guys are covering our end, we can probably close the distance.” A good idea, yeah. Another grenade is fired out of the woods and into the sandbags from Rutledge. He’s doing good on the suppressive fire at least. The Stenos are keeping their heads down for now. You look around again. The Triceratops are roaring and groaning from the fight of the battle nearby in their pen, a few plasma shots occasionally zapping near them.

Another Steno gets popped by a plasma shot as you observe the field. The Stenos are definitely distracted now. So any option would do nicely at this point.

What should you do?

> Close the distance and lob grenades over.
> Crawl over to the pen and set the Triceratops loose on the camp.
> Start firing and see if you can divide their attention even further.

Welcome back to No One Gets Left Behind. On our last episode, we were making an attack on a Lizard artillery camp with the help of a distraction from your Deino friends. Not much else to it.

As per usual, this is being left up overnight, I shall update once I get back from work tomorrow around 6PM EST so expect me then and leave your votes in.

> Close the distance and lob grenades over.

“Come on, Tombs!” You start crawling prone over the ditch. Tombs follows you closely, making sure to keep his chest to the ground and his head down. A bullet strikes near the ground close. Another whizzes over your head. Judging by this dark, they probably don’t know where you are. They might not even know you’re closing in on them.

Your crawling suddenly gives way into a marsh. You briefly taste some dirty water in your mouth before spitting it out. You’ll get clean later. Tombs drops in, splashing some water up. Another bullet whizzes over your head. Son of a bitch! The two of you keep crawling closer and closer. You see plasma shots whip and tear into sandbags as the Stenos desperately fire back. “Right!” you whisper. Tombs looks at you, steely determination in his eyes. “When we get close, two grenades! Get ready!” He nods, pulling himself forward through the reeds and the water. You force yourself out onto more solid ground, just a few meters short of the sandbags. No Stenos have spotted you yet it seems. It seems they’ve even abandoned that side. Their mistake. Tombs takes a grenade from his belt, as do you. You pull the pin and let the spoon fly and hurl it over. Tombs does the same.

You cover your head and wait.

Two brief explosions later, and you got screaming Lizards. Definite proof it worked.

You ready another grenade, as does Tombs. The two of you again pop the spoons and toss them in. Again you duck and cover. The next two explosions and more loud screaming and screeching. Strangely enough, no gunfire though.

You slowly peek your head up and see Stenos screaming and crying out in pain, not one of them is left standing it seems. Your grenades have worked! You wave out to the woods. Through your Infrared on your tactical monocle, you see Rutledge wave back at you, acknowledging. You leap on over and look at all of the guns. They’re still intact, aside from scratch damage from shrapnel and some plasma marks. And thankfully none of the ammunition went off either in all that.

Tierney, Morrison, Godwin, and Burke come running up. Morrison quickly blasts one of the dying Stenos to put it out of its misery, as does Burke. “What do we do now?”

“Hey, look at all this!” says Godwin. He throws open a crate, revealing a large explosive shells for the artillery guns. “The ammo’s intact! We could probably set this all to blow and have all this wiped off the face of the planet!”

“We better work quick,” says Burke. “Before their garrison comes back. They’re sure to have heard all that chaos.” Burke’s right. “We can set the guns to blow. The ammo will help along with that. No way we can take all this with us.”

Morrison blasts another dying Steno in the head, then looks at you. “We better get it done fast before-“ You all pause when you hear loud howls to the north, and more to the south as well. Raptors. Lots of them.

> Set the guns to blow, quick.

“Set them to blow, let’s go!”

You quickly lay the remaining grenades and dump the ammo in piles around the guns. Burke, given remote detonator by Nielson, links the grenades up and readies them to blow on a simple timer. “We have ten minutes,” she says. Tierney manhandles one of the shells and throws it down against the ground next to one of the guns. “We better get going!”

“Agreed!” You wave off at Rutledge. He gives a nodding motion and starts displacing back into the woods. All of you start running out of the artillery position and make for the hills.

“Woohoo!” Godwin laughs loudly. “Can’t believe we got away with that!”

“We didn’t get away with anything, we took them fair and square!” says Morrison. “They’re in for one hell of a surprise though when they come back!” You’d love to see the look on their faces, that is, if there’s anything left of them after getting caught in a massive ammo explosion. All of you run through the woods, smashing through foliage and leaping over log and branch. The Raptor calls continue through the night. But thankfully don’t get any closer.

After some time running, you all slow down for a breather. You manage to get back with Rutledge. You all kneel down in the shade of a large tree. A short five minute break. “No injuries if you’re wondering,” says Rutledge. “We caught ‘em so surprised they couldn’t even get straight shots off. How do you like that?” He grins, flashing his teeth at you. “That was some fancy grenade throwing too, buddy.”

“Thanks,” you say. You nudge Tombs. He nods back, a silent acknowledgement. “Tombs helped. We did good at there, trust me.” Everyone is silent, but they all know the score now. You all just silenced an artillery battery. For good. You all wait, then look at Burke. She’s counting off with her fingers. Five, four, three, two, one.
>>
>>3529944
>>3529944
Bang. The ground shakes. You all look and see a massive fireball even through the trees and rocks. Along with the massive boom are hundreds of little popping noises, secondary explosions and sympathetic detonations. Streaks of fire shoot out in all directions upwards like shooting stars. You can’t imagine how many of those bastards got caught in there. No, actually, you can. You hope the Champion was one of them. It makes your heart soar knowing how well this operation was executed. After all that strife and all that trouble, things are finally looking up now.

“I love a good fire,” says Godwin.

Graves smirks, the light shining off of her eyes. “Cozy as frak.” Everyone looks at the now suddenly bright night sky in awe. Even Tierney looks at it with a smile on her face.

You’re back, baby. You grin, watching it.

All of you begin the long march back to camp. It’s quiet for now. To be frank, you thought they’d put up a good fight. Maybe they really weren’t expecting something like that. Rutledge steps up next to you, nudging. “Come on.” You look at him, confused. “Admit it.”

“What?” you ask.

“That my plan –worked-,” he says. Oh. You look back at Burke. She shrugs, glancing away. Well, he did suggest the plan, most of it. “Now, I’m not usually one to toot my own trombone here but I think you should give credit where it’s due. I’m not as much of an idiot as you might think I am.”

“Hey, it was your plan, but we executed, fifty fifty all across the board,” you remark.

“Ah, yeah, yeah.” Rutledge waves it off, smirking. “You gotta admit though, it was a good plan.” You roll your eyes, sighing. “Just saying. Anyway, we’ll link up at the village with the Deinos first then we can make our way back to camp. Hopefully we get there without getting molested.”

“Right. Listen though, Rutledge, we dealt them a serious blow today.” You and Rutledge stop, letting the others go around you. “We keep on hitting them like this, we’ll make this swamp ours. The Lizards won’t know what them.” Rutledge smirks, understanding what you’re saying. This is a big win for your crew. A bunch of artillery guns gone, maybe a lot more Raptors depending on where they were in the area. Not to mention freeing up the south end of the swamp for travel. No more fear of artillery reprisal. At least for now. You aren’t sure where those rockets are but maybe you’ll find them.

Rutledge says, “Relax, buddy.” He slaps your arm. “Hey, maybe when we get back, we’ll celebrate, okay? We still got a lot of cases of that Deino juice. Maybe Graves will actually put out for once.”

“Rutledge.” You step closer to him. “Come on.”

“What? Scared she’s going to cuck you because you won’t give it to her?” he asks back. Something snaps in your brain. You can feel a bit of fury rising up. “Don’t worry. I know you two are sweet on each other, I’m no homewrecker by any means.” He starts stepping back to rejoin the group. “Listen, we gotta get planning tomorrow morning too. Who knows what the Lizards got in store for a counterattack on this. They won’t let this go unanswered.”

He’s trying to change the subject, but he is right.

> “If they want to counterattack, we’ll lure them into another trap.”

“If they want to counterattack, we’ll lure them into another trap. Hopefully draw them into these trees and right into a nice narrow corridor.” Rutledge nods, agreeing quietly with that sentiment. “By the way, Rutledge. Don’t ever talk about Graves like that again.”

“Aw, did I hurt your feelings?” You’re not sure what’s more insulting. That he’s said that to you, or that Graves would be the one to say that to you. “I’m joking. Relax!” He motions his arms out, smiling. “We gotta ride the high of that mission accomplished! Let’s break out the kegs, have ourselves a dance, boom, plan while we’re hungover! Reminds me of what I used to do.” Yeah, yeah. Jackass. Still, maybe a drink or two wouldn’t hurt.

You sigh, thinking on it. As the two of you catch up with the group, you think more on it. How –are- you going to lure them into a trap though? Sure, they’ll be counterattacking. That’s a definite given. But how and when? It could be tomorrow, it could be right now, it could be next month. And where they’ll strike is another issue too. Sure, it’s a swamp, but they can approach from any angle that they please. Not to mention if you’re really unlucky, they can just swamp the place in more guns and more Lizards before you even know what’s going on.

It hurts your brain thinking about this.

Still, you arrive back at the village. You look up and around. It’s still dark out. And it’ll likely be morning soon given the hazy lights to the east. The village was deserted for now though. Probably the Deinos packing up and leaving in case things got hairy. Everyone settles down by the communal charcoals, warming their hands and resting a bit. Everyone except Godwin, who had opened a left over cask of ale and was busy lapping some of it into his canteen to drink.

Right, what should you do from here?

“Alright, alright. Guys, come on!” says Godwin. Graves stands up, hurrying to get her fill. Then Morrison, Levy, Smitty, and all the rest in short order. A team this large and with this many canteens, unfortunately the barrel goes by very fast. And by then, nearly nothing except a small skim that the canteen can’t reach. You take a drink of it, sighing deeply, letting the liquid sooth your mind. That’s the stuff. “We have more at the ship anyway.” You nod, then see Tierney turn her canteen up and down the entire thing in one go.

“Hey, Tierney, that-“ She waves you off, shaking her head as she walks away. Huh.

“Gotta say,” says Rutledge. “Guys, listen up.” You step to the side. Everyone looks at Rutledge. “Thanks to our buddy here and myself, we did an amazing job out there. No casualties, clean cut, mighty professional. Let’s give ourselves a round of applause.” Scattered claps here and there. Bryce whistles, the most enthusiastic in her clapping. “Let’s get our drinks and we’ll get back to the ship I presume?”

“Depends,” you say. Rutledge shrugs, going to talk with Bryce. You sigh, rubbing your nose. At least this drink is good. You take another drink of it. As you do, Burke nudges you.

“We need to talk.”

“Now?” you ask. She nods. Well. She grabs you and starts dragging you to a secluded part of the village. You look back see everyone a bit too distracted bragging and talking with each other. Spirits seem high at least. So they might not notice you. “What’s up?” you whisper.

Burke folds her arms. “I think Tombs knows.” What?

“About…” Harrell and Cope? She nods, confirming. “How? What makes you say that?”

“I saw him walking around the barracks, taking it in. Then he had a chat with me about it. I said I didn’t know anything. You probably gave him that spiel too,” she says. “He’s got a theory down. But I don’t know how concrete it could be.” He did come to you with his suspicions before. But you were hoping he’d dismiss it. This is bad. “What do we do?”

Tombs definitely knows because of how ridiculously suspicious we acted in denying it when he brought it up to us. He knows we're involved somehow.

We should have said something like "you're probably right, I'll try to investigate it, but until we've got a suspect we should keep it on the down low since everyone is on edge and the last thing we need is people pointing fingers until we have solid evidence."

Oh well, nothing that can be done about that now. We might want to talk to Tombs about it. Fess up that while we didn't pull the trigger, we know who did and we've been doing nothing so we might as well have. He might be sympathetic if we explain things to him, so long as we phrase it in a way that makes it sound like our interest is primarily in protecting someone else and keeping the group from falling apart.

“We ignore it,” you say. “Last thing we need is to look like we’re hiding something.”

“And if he pushes?” she asks.

“Then we might have to tell him,” you say. “I don’t know. He doesn’t strike me as the type of guy to appreciate being lied to. Even by omission.” Burke agrees. The two of you may not get along. But the one thing right now that you can both agree on is that an angry Tombs is not someone you want right now. Angry Tierney is unstable, unbalanced, but as long as she’s happy she’s fine.

Angry Tombs is… You’ve seen Angry Tombs maybe once and you definitely don’t need to see him again.

Burke sighs deeply, taking a gentle sip from her canteen. She has that juice from the cask. Even she has to indulge sometimes. Seems this is starting to catch onto her what she’s done. “Let’s just make sure that if he does find out, that he doesn’t tear us all apart.” Agreed. “That’s all I wanted to say.”

“Don’t worry,” you say. “Suffice to say, I think Tombs will be easy to manage as long as we stay calm and try and make sure he doesn’t do anything rash. Come on, let’s get back to it.” She nods. The two of you go and rejoin the group.

But just as you do, a few Deinos come back into the village, sprinting. You look at them. They chirp to you, pointing down south aways before making a shrill cry. A Lizard patrol from the south. Probably a small one. Seems they might be probing to see if they can counter whoever attacked the artillery.

“Rutledge, get everyone back to the ship, I’ll take care of this and be right back with you all.”

“Are you sure?” asks Graves. “We just wasted a whole bunch of Lizards, they might come out for you.”

“I’m sure,” you say. “You’ve all done enough. Let me do this one thing and we can call it a night.” Truth be told, you’d love to get some sleep, but you’re not going to enjoy any of it until you make sure this patrol doesn’t accidentally stumble upon the ship. “Now get going. I’ll be back.”

“You heard the man, come on!” Rutledge rallies everyone up. Tierney looks to you, apparently aiming to come with you. But Tombs quickly pushes her to join the group. She apprehensively goes with the squad, but still watches as you leave. The Deinos retreat into the trees, intending to make sure there are no more other Lizards out there.

As for you, you sigh. Just this one thing and you’re done for the night.

Seems they were right. It was only a few Lizards. Three Raptor Minors led by a Major. You were set up in a ditch by a root on a tree, watching as they wandered into a clear, sniffing out the place. You keep your carbine trained on them, ready to hit them where it hurts. The Major sniffs the air, growling a little while the Minors search the area. You’re only within fifty meters.

Still, to think they’d immediately send a patrol to look for something in this area. There might be another base down south you’re not aware of. Might be worth looking into.

> Wait and see what happens.

You decide to lean back and see what happens.

The Raptors sniff and search the area, looking for you. It still strikes you as odd, sending only a small party to go after a force they know is out her. Maybe they don’t know the true size of your unit? The Major howls up into the air. After a few seconds, he receives a few calls back in a southerly direction. The Major snarls, sniffing at the ground more eagerly while his Minors watch.

The bushes rustle behind them. You stiffen up, waiting. Out of the bushes comes another Major, with another trio of Minors behind him. They start chirping and squawking at each other. The two Majors look out to the east, then to the north before resuming their conversation. Some of these days you’ll start understanding what they say. But not today. The first Major snorts, before gently headbutting the second Major on the head and turning to walk east.

You’re not sure if this was a waste of time or not. Honestly, you could be doing something else right now.

However, your patience gets rewarded. Coming from the bushes now is the Raptor Champion, backed by two Majors. He sniffs the air, before taking a whiff of the ground too. He’s only fifty meters away and he’s got no artillery to back him up. This could be a good opportunity…

You put him in your crosshairs and wait. If he can just isolate himself first. Then you can get a clean shot make like a burglar and walk out without fuss. You slow your breathing to a crawl, trying not to be seen by them or heard. All they might have is scent. The Champion walks with his two bodyguards, sniffing the air, looking around. He orders one of the guards with a chirp. And he goes off with the Major and his squad, leaving him with just one Major. The Champion continues sniffing the air.

With the scope on your carbine, you keep him in sight, trying not to be seen. His footsteps are the loudest thing right now. No birdsong, no animal chirps, no insect squeals. Just him walking around and the snarling of his breath. The Champion stops, then turns in your direction. He takes a sniff, stepping towards you.

He’s caught your damn scent.

But he doesn’t know if you’re actually there. He keeps walking towards you, the other Major behind him. He continues sniffing, squinting his eyes as he skeptically marches in your direction. Shit, shit.

You take the last grenade off of your built. Right. Pray this works. You pull the pin and pop the spoon and wait. Just one second, two second, and toss! You hurl it over the ditch and right at them. The Raptors don’t get a single second to react before it suddenly blows. You pick yourself up and immediately start sprinting. You suppress your laughter. Ha! You got away with that! The Raptors screech and scream. Maybe they’re dead, maybe they’re alive, you don’t know! You only heard one of them screaming!

But man, you actually did it! You look back and see them searching around way back there. But they don’t see you and the scent of explosive powder is probably throwing their noses off for now.

Ha! You probably got off scot-free!

You grin, thinking on it. That Champion better not get back up like the Rex did!

> Circle around and make sure you actually got them.

After calming yourself down a little, you decide to circle back around and see if you actually did manage to get them.

You double back and find a longer path around, making sure to stay hidden. You’ve already learned your lesson from the Rex. Just because the wounds are lethal doesn’t mean they’ll die. You don’t need –another- vengeful maimed Lizard on your tail. You crouch around, moving to come back. Raptor cries echo through the trees and leaves. They’re as lost as you are hopefully. You keep moving around, skulking through woods as you slowly turn back.

Until finally you come back to where you were initially hidden. You look up over your ditch and see two Raptors lying in the brush. One of them is the Major, his head full of holes and bloodied. Definitely dead. And given it’s also missing an arm and has more fragment marks all across its body, there’s no way he’s living.

The other one is the Champion. It lies on its side, its eye closed and bloodied, probably took a chunk to the eye. More fragment marks run along their length, and it appears the leg took most of the brunt of the explosion judging by the burns and bloodied mess of its ankle. Barely anything left of it. You stare at them, biting your lip. Are they really dead? You look around. No Raptors nearby that you can hear.

You quickly decide to put two rounds each into them. They remain limp. Yep. Dead.

Some Champion. You smirk, looking at him. You see the red long feather running its body. You had heard of what the Lizard Champions do. They pluck feathers from massive birds as a status symbol. It’s done little though to protect him. You come up to the body quickly and grab the feather and wrest it off of his harness.

Along with that Spinosaur, this is a good T̵̃R̵̨̛͍O̶̱̞̥̒̕P̸͍̈H̵̞̍̽Y̴͔̝̎

You hear the Raptor calls once more. You’re already out of grenades.

You decide you’ve done enough for now. You quickly start sprinting back to the camp, hurrying back before the Lizards realize where the Champion has gone.

It’ll be a long run back, but hopefully a peaceful one.

You arrive back at the ship in good time to see the Wife and several Deinos along with Rutledge and Burke. You hold out your arms, smiling at them. “You won’t have to worry about a Champion.” You take the feather out from your satchel, showing it off. The Deinos step back in surprise, looking at it in awe. A trophy and marker of a kill. They come up, sniffing at the feather curiously.

“Well, good for you!” Rutledge claps his hands, smiling at you. “That’s some nice frakking work, buddy.”

“Thanks.” You can feel the condescension in his tone. You look at Burke. “Everyone get back okay?”

“Yep,” says Burke. “They insisted on having a party to celebrate the success in the common room. You in?” You nod. May as well.

You, Rutledge, and Burke along with the Deinos head inside. And there in the common room, everyone bangs their fists in a gentle staccato along the tables. Wexley starts singing, marching around the room. “O Stars Shall Shine through the Void So Dark, but One Dominion Shall Rise!”

“Way-hey!” Everyone joins in, holding up their mugs of Deino Juice. “Ode to Humankind!”

“No planet too huge, no asteroid too thick, no alien too savage, The Dominion won’t be tricked!”

“Way-hey! Ode to Humankind! The Dominion forever forever shall rise! Way-hey Ode to Humankind! The Dominion forever forever shall rise!” You take a mug and raise it as well as everyone cheers, quickly chugging and swigging juice.

“Look who’s here!” Rutledge shouts, patting your arm. “The Big Boss himself!” Everyone raises their mugs to you cheering loudly.

You smile. Now this is a hell of a welcome.

Thanks for running Survive!
The Rat is definitely plotting, it's as clear as day. I'm thinking he'll get into T's head some way unless we spend some time with her.
>>
We need definitive proof that Rutledge is planning something. We can't start punitively killing anybody that we like, there's a point where if we eliminate all of the competent folks, we'll screw ourselves. As long as we deliver results to our crew, there won't be any basis of support for Rutledge. If we keep an ear out, there's bound to be evidence a plenty he's planning something. When we find it, we denounce him, present our case, and then deal with him.
>>
>>3534897
"Deal with" doesn't necessarily mean kill. In any case we should try to find out what he's after.
>>
Also dont forget we have a stash of mortars and ammo for them that we could dig up.
>>
>>3536829
That'd be perfect to fuck up the hill with. Mortar their little shit encampment.
>>
>>3536830
Exactly. we could make a mortar pit somewhere not close to our base and fire on them
>>
>>3536888
We'd have to be mobile. Set up the mortars, a couple sniper positions in the trees, pick off a couple of deinos here and there as they frantically run for cover, then get out and disappear along with our mortars before they have a chance to scout our battery's position.
>>
>>3536930
I see true logic here

“Nielson, you’ve been staring at your drink since the Boss came back, what’s eating at you?” asks Morrison.

Nielson shrugs. You, Nielson, Morrison, Levy, Smitty, Hood, and Wexley were sat around one of the tables. The little party was now settling down as people were simply taking their drinks and gorging themselves in celebration of that successful raid you pulled. “I dunno. Just thinking about what I’ll do once I get home.”

“Ah, you don’t seriously think we’ll make it home, do you?” asks Smitty, a little forlorn expression on his face.

“We might,” says Nielson back. “Best not to lose hope.”

“He’s right,” you say. “If we despair, we’ll just end up wallowing in dirt and mud. At least we have a goal to work towards.”

Nielson smiles, then says, “I’m hoping to open a garage once I get back home,” he says. He nudges you, his smile widening a bit. “Hey, maybe we can go into business together too. Your brawn and my brains might do us some good.”

“Hold on, who said you were the brains,” you say. “I’m the brains.” He rolls his eyes, snickering. You laugh a little too, tickled by that jab. “Anyway, Nielson. Good to be optimistic I suppose.” Truth be told, you sometimes straddle the line. But having no hope is worse than having hope in something that isn’t true. You look around and see Rutledge sitting with Bryce in his lap, the two whispering to each other as they drink quietly. Connell and Godwin chat with each other too by the door, amicably. Seems Graves and Tombs and Stoakes have retired for the night. As has Burke and Tierney and Banner.

Nielson says, “I just know that I’m gonna be home soon. No matter what you guys say.”

You open the door to the medbay and find Graves taking a drink from her mug as she sits in the corner, the Runt napping at her feet. You look at Joffrey and find him sleeping too. Just a gentle rise and fall of his chest as he lies on a table. Thank God, Tombs hasn’t involuntarily euthanized him. You look at Graves and say, “Hey.” She nods to you, smiling a bit. “Where’s Tombs?”

“With Stoakes,” she says. “You know. Having sex in one of the closets.” Oh. “You know. The thing you don’t want to do with me.” Oh, here we go. She snickers. “Relax, I’m joking.”

“Fair, fair,” you say. You lean on the table next to her, looking at her. “How’s the kid?”

“He’s fine,” says Graves. The Runt twitches a little as it remains curled up by her feet, his eyes shut. “Just having a nap while Mommy and Daddy have a quickie. You not celebrating with the others?”

“Nah,” you say. “Not right now at least. I just wanted to check in on you guys. Really, no wounded?”

“No wounded,” says Graves. “Except for my pride whenever you reject me. And I guess your pride too but apparently slaughtering a Raptor Champion has apparently healed it and then some.” She’s got that right. One minute you’re terrified for your life fleeing from artillery, the next you’re on top of the world taking trophies. She takes another sip, her cheeks a little flush. Probably buzzed maybe? “You know, it’s these days I’m glad we’re actually able to make some goddamn headway against the Lizards. The more we get cooped in here, the less stable I think we become.”

“Cabin fever. Isn’t that a thing they teach you in being a medic?” you say.

“I suppose.” She kicks her legs up onto the table, resting her mug in her lap. “I’m just glad given that you’re in charge now, we’re actually making progress. Nielson’s looking to make contact. We’re striking back at the Lizards. Makes me glad a little that Cope and Harrell are gone but… sometimes I miss Cope.”

“Really?” That asshole? You’re more sorry that it’d be controversial to let everyone know how exactly he died. “Why?”

“He really was a good guy before all of this,” says Graves. “Cared for us. Tried to give us hope. I guess the pressure of the situation caught up with him. Same with Harrell. I’m surprised that you manage to take things so lightly too.”

> “Please, I’m actually dying on the inside. I’m just good at hiding it.”

> “Please, I’m actually dying on the inside. I’m just good at hiding it.”

You sigh. “Please, Graves. I’m actually dying on the inside. I’m just really good at hiding it.”

“Ah. Same.” To be frank, you’re glad you said that. But at the same time, Graves kind of dismissed that out of hand. She shrugs. “I don’t doubt you’re suffering, Daddy. I’m just glad you at least admit it though. I don’t want to admit it to anyone else out here and make them pity me or think less of me.”

“Same. At least we have each other to vent to, keeps us a bit more sane,” you say. “I mean, you know that little voice in our heads that sometimes tells us to do things?”

“Like the one telling me to throw you down and suck your cock?” she says in the most deadpan way possible. Does she have to ruin these moments with phrases like that? “I’m joking. If you have a literal voice in your head telling you to do things, you might want to get that checked out and of course, ignore it. The sane part of your mind is the one that’s in control. Worse thing you can do is let you convince yourself that you actually need help.” She jabs your chest. “Your heart.” She then jabs your forehead. “And your brain. Those two are the best judges of what you need. The body naturally follows them.”

“Seems like that would’ve been an appropriate place for a dick joke.”

“Too obvious,” she says. “Besides, I know you’re not following your dick otherwise you’d have tried to work a foursome between me, Tierney, and Burke by now.” Well… it’s not like you –haven’t- thought about trying to make that work. She smiles, then takes a sip of her mug. “Anyway, sorry to make you feel like you’re suffering.”

“No, no, it’s fine,” you say. You sit on the table, leaning forward, looking at her closely. The contours of her sleeves rolled up over her arms, her perfect legs beneath her pants, and her heaving chest beneath her shirt as well… You bite your lip, sighing deeply. “I just-“ She glances up at you, then you quickly look away.

“Ah!” She grins smugly. Shit. SHIT. “Caught you ‘miring.” She pokes at you with her foot, smiling. “Come on. Is it finally the night where we bump uglies? It is a moment of celebration.”

“Graves, it’s-…” You sigh.

Her grin drops a little, then shrugs. “Ah, nevermind.” Her grin then slowly drops into a more neutral expression.

It’s now much more awkward. You’d have preferred the teasing at this point.

“I’m mean, if you’re down for it,” you say. Graves blinks, looking at you in confusion. Truth be told, a little stress relief would be nice. Popping your cherry, at least you can say that you did it with a girl like Graves. You were kind of hoping for Tierney, but Graves isn’t a bad choice. “Look, Graves. I know I’ve been reluctant and everything but you are right, it’s a night to celebrate a little.”

Graves tilts her head, squinting at you. “This isn’t because you feel guilty about rejecting me just now, is it?”

… maybe a little bit.

She points to you. “Ha. I see it in your eyes, I got you, bitch,” she says. You roll your eyes. And to that, she stands up and quietly tiptoes over the Runt before resting her hands around you, leaning close against your chest. “Still. I won’t be picky.” She makes a smooching motion with her lips, smiling up at you. “If anyone asks though, you totally did seduce me and I totally did fall for it and let you frak my brains out. And you totally did make me cum even on your first try.”

“What?” you blink. “You don’t think I could?”

“I know you can’t,” she says. She jabs your chest, grinning. “You’ve never had sex before and you have a –very- antiquated attitude about it too. It’s actually pretty adorable.” Before you can respond, she pecks your cheek softly, before wetly pressing her lips against yours for just a brief second. You scoot back, trying to escape a bit. But nope, she pushes forward, now caught between your legs with her hands on the table around you. –Goddamn it-. You… “… look at you!” She grins, poking your cheeks. “You’re blushing, Daddy!”

“I’m-“ You look away. “Stop.”

“No.” She pokes your cheek again. “Such a faggot, holy shit.”

“I thought thi- you-“ She pecks your cheek again, giggling a little. What the hell is she doing!? She kisses your chin, snickering a bit. “… I thought we were going to have sex,” you whisper at her.

She pauses, looking at you with her single good eye with some hint of condescension and some hint of a feeling called “wow you are so bad at this”. She says, “Haven’t you ever heard of foreplay, Daddy?” She pinches your cheek, wiggling it a bit. Of course you have! You just hate it being centered around teasing you! “What, you want to cut straight to the chase?” She takes your hands, then gently places them down on her chest. Soft. Really soft, even through the cloth of her shirt.

Oh hell. You’re losing it.

You sigh. You’re probably not gonna get another chance for a while. You better make this count. “Can I just get five minutes!?”

“Uh.” Nielson pauses for a second. Graves stares at the door, trying to will him to go away like you are too. “Yeah. Yeah. I- I’ll tell ‘em to just wait I guess.” You hate to be rude to the Deinos, but this matters –right now-. After that, you hear his footsteps go right away.

Graves sighs. “Thank God.” You grab Graves’ shoulders, then quickly throw her down onto the table. “Whoa, Daddy-!“ You grab at her pants and pull them off. “Ahaha!” She starts laughing as she throws her legs up into the air. Your heart’s throwing an absolute fit doing this. And you can feel a tingle in your fingers and the blood rushing everywhere trying to make sense of it all.

This is going to be a fun five minutes.

You open the door, panting, adjusting your pants and quickly wiping your face of sweat. Graves takes a swig of water from her canteen, having got herself cleaned up and redressed. “I’ll be in here, Daddy.” She wiggles her fingers at you in a coy little wave, smirking, a bit of drool hanging from her lips. You knock your head on the doorframe.
>>
>>3547010
Of all things though, you feel surprisingly calm in the head for some strange reason. Maybe all that pent up aggression coming out all at once was good for you. You smirk, sighing deeply. Yeah. Good. Great even.

You walk up to the main door and find Rutledge and Godwin speaking. “… and then I said to him-“ Godwin looks at you. “Oh, hey, boss.” He takes a sniff, then leans back. “Jeez. You smell like you ran a mile or something.”

“Something outside going on?” you ask.

Rutledge sizes you up for a second, then smirks very smugly. Oh frak, he knows. He’s figured it out just from the look. “Yeah,” he says, apparently ignoring it. “Come see.” He takes the door and pushes it open.

Outside are several dozen Deinos, laying fruits, gifts of feathers and wood necklaces and spears, strange liquids, bowls of even stranger looking colors, all kinds of miscellaneous items on the ground. The Wife curates them, the Kids hanging off of her back as she looks. She sniffs the air then looks back at you, stepping up to you. She takes a sniff, then starts growling. Oh, she knows too. “Calm down, calm down,” you say. The Wife stops growling, then motions to all of the gifts being left. You see Burke and Banner looking at it all in surprise. “What is all this?” you ask.

Delta comes up then quickly translates it out to you on the floor. You killing the Champion. That’s pretty much it. Huh. The Deinos again are reverent of you killing some incredibly hated enemy it seems.

The Wife holds up a bowl of black thick looking liquids. You look down at Delta. He makes rubbing motions on his face.

… Face paint? He nods, confirming. The Wife bows to you, apparently honored to give you something like this.

> No. You’re not painting your face. You wouldn’t even know where to start.

> You’ll take it. But you won’t do it now. This’ll be for practical purposes.

You take the bowl and nod to the Wife. “Next time we’ll use it for a raid.” Delta nods, chirping to the Wife. She bows to you, baring her teeth lightly. The other Deinos bow as well when you hold the bowl in your hand. “… uh, Delta. Can you explain what this is?” Delta nods and starts shoveling dirt to show it out in pictures.

In the sea, large squids apparently occasionally wash up on the sands, dispersing ink that the Deinos harvest for a variety of things. Because these squids usually wash up with battle scars and wounds, the Deinos revere them as dying warriors, and they themselves as the ferrymen who help them move on to the afterlife. So what the Deinos do to these squids is wrap them in leaves, place a hole in the ground on the beach, lower the squid down, then bury the squid in sand at the low tide. Once the high tide comes, the hole disappears, and the squid is assumed to have his spirit returned to the ocean where he may continue to fight.

Rather than just decaying in a hole in the sand at high tide you suppose.

Still, you suppose it’s an honor to receive such a gift. The squid ink is a sign of warrior spirit. Er go, you’re a warrior. Not so bad you suppose. You bow back to them and step back. The Deinos continue leaving gifts which Burke and Banner all stare at. “I don’t know if we can take all this stuff,” says Burke. “It’s quite a lot of food at least.”

“We’ll get fat at this rate,” says Banner.

Well, no reason to refuse it. You need it as much as they do. And if they’re willing to part with it, who are you to say no?

Burke steps up to you, hand on her belt. “Listen, Boo. I’m glad I found you anyway. We need to-“ She sniffs you. Then she leans in and sniffs your neck, then your chest. You lean back a little, a bit confused. Banner folds his arms, both confused and a little jealous that she’s not sniffing him weirdly. The Wife growls. Burke leans back, recoiling almost in disgust. “… why do you smell like that?” Oh shit.

After a quick shower, you decide the best place to talk with Burke about this is in the Command truck. Some privacy after all. Not too many people approach the Command truck unless they need to shower or they need something from it. You sit down on a chair inside of it, looking at her as she leans on one of the command consoles. “I noticed Godwin’s been talking with Rutledge a lot. You notice that too?”

You nod. “They were just talking when I showed up. Were they talking about anything in particular?”

“Mostly about Graves,” she mutters. Of course they are. “I know we just talked about Tombs, but Rutledge and Godwin, when you were out doing your little hunting shenanigans. Godwin was talking mad shit about you.” … was he? “He apparently doesn’t really respect you as much as he might pretend to.”

“I mean, I’ll be honest, that’s not incredibly surprising.” The real question though, Rutledge. “What about Rutledge?”

“Here’s the thing,” she says. “Rutledge actually defended you.” Did he? “He shut down Godwin when he tried to play you off as some super do-gooder.” That’s honestly kind of surprising. “However. Here’s the important kicker.” Burke steps closer to you, leaning towards you to whisper in your ear. “Godwin tried to imply you know more about Harrell and Cope’s death.”

“What?” You look at her. “You’re sure about this?”

“He didn’t say you had any part of it outright,” says Burke. “And Rutledge just kind of dismissed it. But Godwin definitely tried to put something on you.” She smacks her fist in her palm. “He frakking wants something from you. And I think he’s getting ready in case he needs to spill it.”

> “I’m going to kill him.”

“Godwin’s gonna get sent on a lot more missions from now on,” you say. “That’s for sure.” Now that you think about it, it makes perfect sense that Godwin got caught if he’s this loose lipped. You shake your head, rubbing your nose. Goddamn it. Back to the shit. “Thanks for the info.”

“No need to thank me,” she says. “Truth be told, he’s another idiot we probably need to put in the ground anyway.”

“Let’s not go that far,” you say. Burke hesitates, before shutting up. “We’ll play it off for now. And then we’ll keep an eye on him. I’ll take him with me on more missions these days.” Truth be told, Rutledge doesn’t seem the type to even –care- that you killed Cope and Harrell. He’s probably glad they’re dead most likely. He probably would care more than you basically led Cope to his death. You fold your arms, thinking on it.

“Right.” Burke pushes off the table, nodding to you. “Alright. I’ll keep an eye on him for you. If he starts talking though.” She shakes his head. “We probably need to figure something out.”

“Yeah.” You nod. “Just play it off, okay?”

“Got it.” She gently kicks her foot against the floor, sighing. “Can’t believe we owe that bastard.”

“He walked in and offered. I don’t like him much either but… we can at least keep him under control.”

She frowns deeply, angry at that. She starts walking out of the command truck, but then turns to you. “Just make sure that if you take him out with you, that he gets frakked.” And to that, she leaves.

Well. Great.

> You haven’t seen Tierney. Where is she?

You decide the best thing for now was to go look for Tierney. You had the black faint paint bowl wrapped in a sturdy leaf, sealed up with some tape, and then placed it in your satchel for safekeeping once you needed it. For now, your goal was to see where she went. Not because you were thinking of anything lewd or anything, you already had your fair share of Graves. No, you were just genuinely worried because she actually has gone missing. You open the barracks and peek in. Just Connell, Whitney, and Early sleeping in their bunks.

You check in the armory. Nothing.

Then you look in the common room. Just the guys getting drunk again. Some of them have passed out too. Shame.

Then where Delta was based out of early on. Nothing.

You check the closets at the end. You find Stoakes and Tombs stepping out of one quickly after hastily getting redressed. You’d make a joke but right now you were actually getting extremely nervous. Because after all that you –still- didn’t find her. Tombs adjusts his collar a bit, looking at you. “Looking for something?”

“Have you seen Tierney?” you ask.

Stoakes steps up, adjusting her hair a bit. “No. Oh my goodness, has she gone missing?” Ah, hell. She didn’t go downstairs alone, did she? “Okay, don’t panic, don’t panic. Let me think.” She snaps her fingers, thinking on it. “… she was getting really drunk off that Deino ale.”

“You don’t think she wandered outside, did she?” you say.

“Well, the stairs to downstairs are still barricaded,” says Tombs. “Unless she went and put them back up if she went downstairs.” Shit. Shit! You hurry back down the hall and find Burke stretching her arms up as she heads to the barracks.

“Burke!” She stops, looking at you. “Where’s Tierney?”

She squints. “No, I haven’t seen her.” She blinks. “Oh, frak. She’s missing, isn’t she?”

> Take a party and get outside. See if you can track her down.

“Burke, with me.” You point to Tombs and Stoakes. “You two, get some people who aren’t drunk together. We’re going downstairs to find her.” They nod. You and Burke quickly draw your weapons and push through the stair barricade. You and Burke hurry down the stairs and quickly end up in the chamber. Burke sniffs the air, trying to get a bead on something.

She blinks. “I smell her.”

“You can smell people?” you ask.

“I can smell –drunk people-“ she says. “It’s not as hard as you think.” Well, shucks. Now you’re feeling bad about not smelling her then. “And people who just recently had sex.” … okay, you won’t comment. “Very strong smells associated with it, Boo.” Right. No more, please. She sniffs the air inside the chamber once more, looking around. Then you notice something.

One of the capsules holding the weird liquids inside was busted open. Little shards of glass were all around on the floor and the liquid itself was spilled out. Did Tierney bust one of these open? “There.” You point to something beside the capsule. It’s a mug, completely empty. Yeah. Tierney’s mug most likely. You look around, then you hear a loud banging noise from the end where Nielson found all those black boxes. “Tierney!?” you shout.

No response. You and Burke glance at each other. There’s something off about this. You raise your weapons, your Carbine and her DMR. The two of you start advancing, slowly. The light inside that room has been shut off. The both of you step inside, turning on your flashlights.

In the center of the room was Tierney. Oh. You found her pretty quick. Thank goodness you didn’t assume she went outside but…

She was knelt down, facing the floor, scratching at it with the tip of her knife. Your ears cringe and twitch at the screeching metallic agony of the knife shredding into the metal floor. You can’t see her face. Her back is too you. A few of those mini-drones float around beside her. “Tierney?” you quietly call to her.

She continues scratching at the floor, heedless of you and Burke. Burke glances to you. This isn’t some weird love ritual. Something is wrong. Very –wrong-.

Slowly, you go around her. Burke goes with you. You’re not sure what’s happening here. Is Tierney dying? Is she about to commit suicide? Is she writing some kind of warning on the floor? Slowly, you step around, keeping your guns trained on her. Slowly, you see the blank expression in her eyes, lifeless, as if like a book with nothing on the pages. She simply stares at the floor as she scratches it with her knife.

You come around to her front. “Tierney?” you call again. She looks up at you, still blank in the eyes. “Tierney, are you okay?” She looks at you, almost as if staring past you. You step back, your hairs standing up and your knees feeling weak from the sight. She looks down, her mouth open but twitching, as if trying to say something.

You look down at what she’s written on the floor.

IT GOT OUT

… What got out?

Burke slowly walks up to her, her DMR lowered to point at the floor. “Tierney. It’s me, Burke. And it’s Boo, too.” Tierney shakes a little, her hands quivering as she holds the knife. The tip is definitely blunted from all that writing. But it’s still sharp on the edge. It can still do damage. Burke lets her DMR hang on her sling as she holds out her hands to her. “Now, Tierney. Come on. It’s okay. We can-“

With a loud scream, she lashes out at Burke. Burke falls flat on her ass, holding her hands out. Tierney wildly slashes the knife in the air, trying to get at her!

“Boss!” Nielson runs downstairs, gun drawn along with Hood and Tombs.

> Tackle Tierney down.

You sprint at Tierney and lean in, grabbing her waist and tackling her down to the ground. She doesn’t even scream because you’ve basically knocked the wind right out of her. She manages to drop her knife too in the confusion. Tombs runs in and quickly grabs hers. She thrashes and struggles as you hug her tight at her gut while Tombs wraps his arms around her neck and head. She tries to scream, only coming out as a quiet screech as she’s strangled slowly. “T-… Tombs!”

He quietly presses his arm up against her neck. Slowly you slow Tierney blinks before stopping her struggle, going limp in his arms. You let go, quickly stepping back. “Shit. Tombs!” you shout.

“It’s fine,” he says. “Blood strangulation. There won’t be any permanent damage.”

Burke dusts herself off, pointing upstairs. “Let’s get her upstairs and quick. Come on.” You look around. Much as you want to know what did this, you can’t afford to scout right now. And especially for once, you don’t feel like doing it yourself.

You help Tierney back upstairs.

Reviving her was simply a matter of letting her wake back up of her own accord. It only took a minute or two before she realized she had her hands tied up in rope behind her and was sitting on a table in the medbay. Graves checks her eyes with a penlight. “Remember anything?” she asks.

Tierney shakes her head. “I-… I remember being pretty drunk. But… there was a Minidrone upstairs that I chased through the barricade. I set it up behind me just in case something got out and well-… you know.” You stand there with Tombs, Nielson, and Burke. She holds her head, groaning a little. “I don’t know. Last thing I remember is waking up here. I can’t even say I blacked out. It’s like there was a blur and suddenly I was here.”

Tombs says, “You wrote something got out on the floor with your knife. Do you remember that?”

She shakes her head. “No. I- I don’t.” He puts his hands on his hips, looking down in disappointment. “I’m sorry. I was just-…”

“Now hold on!” Rutledge comes in suddenly, having been observing from behind. “How do we know this is the real Tierney?” You what.

“I’m the real Tierney,” she says. She looks at everyone, fearful.

“How do we know that whatever got out didn’t just eat Tierney and this thing isn’t just mimicking her?” asks Rutledge.

“I’m the real Tierney!” she says, close to tears. “P-… Please stop!” she whimpers. “Don’t kill me! I’m real, I’m real!” She covers her face with her hands, sobbing inconsolably.

… You glare at Rutledge. Graves, Tombs, and Nielson too. What the frak. He looks at you. “It was a joke, Jesus. Calm down,” he says.

Ruttledge is right, but it doesn't have to be right this minute. That does bring up a good point though, something could be inside of her, lying dormant. After all, it got out....
>>

>>
> Hug Tierney, comfort her.

You wrap your arm around her, pulling Tierney close. She quickly turns into your chest, pushing her face against you and sobbing right into you. Goddamn that man for doing this. You could understand if he was genuinely concerned. But a –joke!?- What is he thinking? “Rutledge.” Graves taps him on the arm, pointing to the door. “There’s the door. Go on. Get.”

Rutledge steps back. “Alright, alright. Jeez.” He glances at you. You shake your head. He scoffs, walking away and out the door.

Nielson looks to Tierney. “You okay?” She shakes her head. He looks at you. “Hey, listen. I’ll go downstairs with a team, make sure nothing’s been done. Okay? We gotta make sure our line hasn’t been cut. That is our way of contacting the Fleet you know.”

“I know,” you say. “Take as many people with you as you can. No less than three people.” You look at Burke. “Burke?”

“I’ll go with him,” she says. “Come on.” Burke and Nielson move to the door, stepping out.

Graves sighs, a very heavy frown on her face. Tombs too looks concerned, but in a much different way. He appears contemplative. Graves says, “Look, Tierney. We do have to test you. But it’s not going to be anything invasive. We just need a blood sample, that’s all. Okay?” She nods, still in your chest. “Okay. I’ll get a syringe. We don’t have to do it now though. We’ll do it when you’re ready, baby.”

“Okay.” Tierney sniffles, pulling her face away from you. She wipes some tears out of her eyes and off of her cheeks. Seeing her like this breaks your heart a little. You know you’ve been trying to toughen her up, but still… Not everyone can take this as well as you are. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine.” Tombs nods to her, patting her shoulder. “Don’t worry about it. We’ll take care of you.” She nods, understanding. And again, she leans on you for support. You gently stroke her hair, keeping her close. No need to say anything. You’re there for her.

Whatever is down there though. They better be prepared because you’re sure as shit going to wreck them for doing this to her.
