The year is 2030, and competitive gaming is a worldwide phenomenon.

The world has come far from the days where professional gaming is stigmatized, stadiums erected in the name of physical sports soon being repurposed into stadiums for competitive games. From high-octane first-person shooters to intense rhythm games – everything is accepted in this world where games reign supreme.

Man, you’re almost as sick of this being repeated as you are of everything that’s been happening over the last three days!

Currently, you find yourself resting against a bench with your eyes closed – the din of the crowd and the pulsing lights of advertising signs is almost too much for you. The shopping center of Warscape certainly has changed over the past five years, if only due to the amount of people that now populated it. Player run stores littered the area, you could hardly get into any official stores due to how many people were crammed inside – you miss the old days, you really do.

Why are you here, though? Well, Cinder basically forced you into it. With your match with Rock coming up tomorrow, she said that you couldn’t just stick to the basics anymore, and that she’ll be showing you around to find weapons that aren’t as “fucking old as the things you used against 0phelia.”

The classics worked just fine, damnit! You eventually conceded to her, but only if she paid for everything – you hardly have anything in your account, $10,000 was hardly enough to buy much more than a simple assault rifle. Speaking of this, where the hell is she? Due to your arcade being vandalized and currently being fixed, you had to go to a different place (one that was significantly more expensive) and she said she’d be right behind you.

It’s been twenty minutes. What a good start to the day!

>Explore the marketplace and scout out some stuff on your own, you’re tired of sitting still.
>Stay put and watch the crowd, maybe you’ll see someone who you used to know.

You decide to wait a few more minutes for her, opening your eyes and anxiously glancing towards a clock visible on one of the buildings. When Cinder doesn’t show, you let out an irritated sigh and stand up, pulling up your message menu and shooting off a quick text to her.

>I’ll be around the square, hit me up when you’ve arrived.

With that, you move past a group of girls with bright hair colors and into the throngs of people. It almost feels as if you’re being dragged along by a wave, the sounds of at least a thousand people chattering in your ears as you’re forced forwards by the crowd. You take the chance to look at the scenery as you do – there are stalls that have a variety of military items on display, their owners calling towards wayward players about the deals they have. A menagerie of digital signs litter the buildings and streets – flashing LEDs burning into your virtual retinas as attractive avatars show off clothing items and the like. You do see a few items that you yourself would wear, but before you can take in the store name you find yourself pushed away by the crowd.

Okay, you won’t lie, that’s super irritating – you force yourself from the stream of people and stumble as you make your way onto the sidewalk. Glancing around, you realize that you’ve gone quite a bit away from your usual location – and in front of you is EVEN MORE FLASHING LIGHTS. Thankfully it’s on a much smaller scale in the form of an old-school looking neon light simulating the rolling of dice.

So they added casinos, huh? Well, you are looking for something to do…

>Enter the casino – you’re bored and there don’t seem to be too many people inside.
>Find something else to do – your money is VALUABLE even if you don't have much of it.

Honestly, if these were around during your prime, you may have partaken in gambling. Back then you had much more money in-game than you knew what to do with, and with little options for you to spend it on, this would have been the perfect time sink! However, that $10,000 could mean the difference between getting something actually useful or not, so you turn on your heel and start down the sidewalk once more. Other than the initial crowd of people who rushed down the street, this area of the marketplace is surprisingly normal.

There’s space to walk here, people hanging around at a respectable distance from each other. You can spot a few people comparing guns with bright grins on their faces at a picnic table, there are some game stalls with some peppy owners pulling people off of the street – it’s surprisingly peaceful in this neighborhood. You look towards the game stalls and shrug, making your way over and checking them out.

It’s something to do, and you don’t mind hanging around until Cinder brings her lazy ass around.

It seems that the entire street is dedicated to fun little games like these; there are simple fairground games like scooping up a goldfish that would go inside a home base aquarium and a ring-toss for gacha tickets, as well as more intense games like knife throwing and dueling. Shit, some of these actually look kind of fun to you, and they’d certainly pertain to your (former) skill sets.

What do you choose?

>A gun booth manned by a cheerful blonde-haired boy with a blue hoodie. The aim is simple – you get three bullets to fire at some moving targets, and if you hit all of them, you get a prize. The entry fee is $500. [This will require a LOW roll.]
>A knife throwing booth owned by a cute girl with short strawberry blonde hair and a low-cut top. It’s similar to the first booth, only you need to throw knives at stationary targets – the entry fee is $1000 and up, and the sign says she’ll double whatever you pay if you win. [This will require a roll.]
>A dueling set-up manned by a woman with an eyepatch and a suit. You’ll be given a revolver and led into a very small-scale arena and fight as if you’re in a regular match. If you beat her, she says she’ll give you every bit of money she has on her, along with the guns. [This will require a HIGH roll.]

You linger around for a few minutes, before deciding with a shrug to go up to the dueling booth. It doesn’t seem to have an entry cost – so technically it’s no risk and high reward, however she must be pretty good if she’s willing to bet everything she has on-hand.

When you walk closer, you think you can see one of her eyes widen in recognition behind her dark green hair, but she shakes it off and reaches into a case beside her. You wouldn’t blame her if she did recognize you – even with the changes you had made to your avatar (blonde hair and red eyes), you couldn’t change your body or facial structure unless you went out of the way to make a new account. And while you could have made an alt, admittedly you hadn’t even thought of that due to the tension that yesterday contained.

“Think you can take me?” She offers little in the way of greeting, spinning one revolver with deft fingers and holding it out to you handle first. You take it out of her hand and flip open the cylinder, checking that all six bullets were within. Snapping it shut, you nod to her. You weren’t able to get in any practice yesterday due to the arcade’s repair eating up most of your time, but you planned to throw yourself all into it today to make up for lack of time.

An un-ideal situation? Absolutely, but you’ll make the most of it if only to spit in Rock’s eye at the end of it.

She smirks at you and an ethereal door appears right next to her stall, most likely leading to an arena of her own design. She jerks her head in a silent gesture to enter, so you shrug and do so. Stepping into the door, you see that the arena is a mirror image of this street, except all of the stalls are absent and the ends are gated off.

How simple!

“Go to the end over there. I’ll do the same, then we fight. If you win, I’ll give you everything on me.” She reaches into her inventory and flashes what you think is $100,000? Holy shit, that’s a lot. You’ll have to give it your all!

“When I win, you mean?” You can’t help but throw a sarcastic quip at her, feeling a familiar rush of competition thrum through your skin. You aren’t super a fan of it, but old habits resurfacing from the abyss die hard.

“Cocky, aren’t you?” She walks to her end of the street while you do the same. Everything is quiet except the distant sound of birdsong, the wind tousling your hair as you stare her down.

“GO!” She calls, raising her gun as quick as a flash.

Everybody, don't forget your daily dose of Fuck 0phelia.
>>
As the sound of her voice breaks the delicate silence of the street, you feel a calm come over you as you close your eyes. Unlike the match with 0phelia, there are no personal stakes here – if you lose, you don’t need to worry. You exhale as you hear the crack of her revolver, feeling a strange weight lift off your shoulders. Don’t worry about reality, don’t worry about the match tomorrow, don’t think at all. This was an old trick that you used to fully put yourself within the mindset of a match – and if you’re going to be taking things public once more, some old habits don’t need to die.

Your eyes snap open and your own gun raises, pulling the trigger and hearing the sound of metal clanging as sparks fill your vision. You can see her visible eye widen once again, and it makes your face twist into an almost vicious smirk.

You just shot her bullet out of the air. Reflexes were still working well, then.

You spin the revolver just as she had earlier, dropping into a running position and sprinting towards her. She composes herself quickly, raising the gun and firing two more shots. Just like the first, you take them out of the air without having to think. As you come up on her, you see her flick her free hand and a short blade falls out of her sleeve – that doesn’t surprise you much, carnies always need an advantage. She strikes out with it, but you duck under and drive a fist into her stomach, moving back and aiming a kick towards her head that connects with a meaty thud.

Another perk of this being virtual – you’re a lot more agile than you could ever hope to be.

>Player: ???
>HP: 80/100 (-20)

She springs away from you and does a pirouette, sending three knives from under her other sleeve in your direction. You feel two of them fly past your face, but you stop the other one dead in it’s tracks with the butt of your revolver. You swipe it out of the air and continue your rush – now the playing field is even. You close the distance between the two of you before she can get another shot off, your newly acquired knife clashing against her sword as you fire your gun into her chest.

>Player: ???
>HP: 30/100 (-50)

She scrambles to right herself, but she’s far too late – in her haste to switch into a defense position, she takes the blade away from your knife.

That’s all the opening you need to jam it into the underside of her mouth.

>HP: 0/100

You jump away from her defeated body and do a turn in the air, landing with both feet and one hand on the ground. As she falls to the pavement, you can’t help but gloat just a little – you spin the revolver’s cylinder and blow on the still smoking barrel, a sense of accomplishment filling your mind.

That…was fun.

>You Win! Congratulations!
>Funds Gained: $100000

Also like how we first went from turning our avatar with black hair and red eyes into one with black hair and green eyes to look less edgy, only to then turn it to blond hair and red eyes.

Meaning essentially the only thing different between our current avatar and our look when we were famous is now we're blond. Surprised more people haven't recognized us, to be honest.

You unload the gun and let the bullets clatter to the ground as you walk towards her, the gun disappearing as you do. A quick ping out of the corner of your eye confirms that it was transferred to your inventory as well, along with the one she had been holding. Only half an hour in the game and you’ve already made a profit, sweet! Maybe you won’t even have to make Cinder pay for some things?

Nah, you still will. She has a lot of money in her pockets.

You stand above the girl and hold your hand out to her – she takes it and pulls herself to her feet, rubbing the underside of her jaw as she does.

“Shit, that confirms it.” She scratches the back of her head, pointing towards the door that leads back out onto the street. “Knew I recognized you.”

Oh damn, your cover’s been blown! It’s not like you were really looking to have a cover at the current moment, you just don’t want people to swarm you in the marketplace with angry comments or worse. You had taken one look at your incoming friend request list when you logged on and said fuck that, you’d rather go undercover than put up with anything else right now. This was a practice day, not a contact everyone you knew and cared for day.

“Am I that obvious?” You ask as you walk through the door, the light din of the street gracing your ears yet again. She chuckles and pushes the hair out of her eyes, taking her position near the stall again and taking two more revolvers out of her inventory.

“The hair threw me off, but your gameplay confirmed it. Welcome back.” She looks behind you at another potential player and waves you out of the way, offering her pitch to him as she had done to you.

You glance at your messages – still no sign of Cinder. Ugh. What are you supposed to do now?

>Money: $110,000

You try and remember the way to the market center as you’ve walked pretty far, but your saving grace comes in the form of a little mini-map flickering to life in the corner of your vision. A few moments later, a blue line flickers to life and marks the directions you need to take to arrive there. How handy!

>Alright, I’m on my way. By the way, got two revolvers and $100,000. Beat some girl with an eyepatch for it, she recognized me though.

You move through the streets at a fairly quick pace, keeping your head down and dodging the attempts of shopkeepers trying to get your attention. One girl practically tries to drag you into the clothing shop she works at, but you extract your arm from her iron grip and hurry on. Christ, workers are aggressive here! You could probably play this game just for the amount of shops alone, Christ.

>Oh, that’s neat!!! I think you’re talking about Viola? She won’t tell anyone, she’s quite private herself! She still won’t tell me how she lost her eye IRL!

Damn, that’s kinda metal. She must have it on her avatar just for comfort’s sake then, you had been a little curious, but she waved you off before you could ask about it. You type out another reply to Cinder.

>What took you so long, BTW?

She responds instantly.

>It’s part of the surprise! You’ll like it, I promise!

Mmmmm, that doesn’t sound suspicious whatsoever. You consider asking further but realize that it would be fruitless – if Cinder didn’t want to talk, forcing her to would be like prying open a bear trap. Whatever, you’ll just see what she has for you when you arrive.

It takes quite a bit of walking to get to the center – this marketplace is more like a market city nowadays, to the point where you saw buses and trains leading to different areas! It’s certainly come a long way since your time, but you can’t bring yourself to say you detest it – if people were having fun, then what’s the issue?

Once you arrive you look around, trying to peer into the crowd of people running off to whichever shop they preferred. It takes a little bit to locate her through the rabble, but you eventually spot her leaning against a railing and watching the lower level of the market with amused eyes.

Well damn, you’ve never actually seen her avatar before – if people ever gave you shit for making one that actually looks like you, they haven’t met her before. From here you can’t spot a detail that would differentiate her from herself in real life – the only thing different is that she isn’t wearing a hoodie for once.

You’re about to step forward and call out to her, but on second thought a devious smile spreads across your face. Too many times has she spooked you when coming into the arcade – hiding behind your desk and popping out, pulling you into headlocks on the street…THE CYCLE ENDS HERE.

Instead of taking the direct route to her, you hide yourself in the crowd and do a loop around the giant fountain in the middle of the square. When you emerge, you see her checking her menu idly – she must be wondering where you are. Little does she know you’re approaching with stealth forged over countless hours of playing Warscape…god you wish you could be this sneaky IRL. She probably would have caught you already if it were real life, in fact!

And because of these reasons, she doesn’t see you until you bring your hands down on her shoulders.

“HUH!?” Her voice comes out as a squeak as her body spasms, whirling around with wide eyes as she swings her elbow around to meet you. You duck out of the way and snicker, holding up your hands in a show of surrender. She takes a moment to calculate that it’s you, and she lets out a shaky sigh as she presses a hand to her chest. She looks up at you with a pout, a small flush spreading across her cheeks as she does.

“Just getting you back for standing me up,” You smile at her cheekily, to which she wraps an arm around your neck and squeezes hard.

Even with a metaphorical Nat 20, Cinder’s wrath is inescapable. She drives her fist into your scalp and holds you in place, and even if it doesn’t hurt like it would in real life, the sparking sensation that substitutes pain in this game still feels uncomfortable.

“And I spent all of this time…getting you something for your match…” She speaks through gritted teeth, although not in an unfriendly manner.

“Sorry, couldn’t help myself…” You respond when she lets you go, rubbing the top of your head as the sparks begin to fade.

“All this time? How long have you spent buying whatever your surprise is, if you don’t mind my asking?” After shaking off the sparks, you join her in leaning against the railing – she keeps looking at your hair curiously, though.

“Man, I didn’t expect you to choose that color. Looks like it did when I first met you!” She comments, and you concede that it’s true. The night after you left everything, you went down to the store and bought a thing of dye to help dissuade people from recognizing you – it looked like shit honestly, and as soon as it faded you never dyed it again. At least you didn’t use the same contact color – you went for blue instead. “Anyways, this is something I figured you’ll need if you’re actually doing it on a public stage.”

“And what would that be?”

Rock had contacted you before you hopped in game – one reason was to tell you that he’d paid for everything that you needed as was promised, and the other was to tell you some bad news – the only way he could get it done publicly and locally was at the arena across town. This normally wouldn’t be an issue; however, they already have an event going on tomorrow – which means that you two are the exhibition that precedes it. That wasn’t what you had wanted at all, but he did what you had told him to do in your terms!

“I had to make a deal with a good friend of mine to get a custom item made since she’s a fuckin’ cheapskate, but here.” She pulls out a folded black square from her inventory and hands it to you. “Don’t put it on in public because it’ll let everyone know who you are, but it’s a new coat! I know you lost the last one against 0phelia.”

Yep, that was certainly true – you ran through fire with it and it fell to the abyss, in fact! You wish that clothes and accessories actually stayed on your character after they get destroyed in game, but Auxilia Systems needs to keep that money flowing, right? Capitalism, ho!

“Thanks.” You respond, sliding it into your own inventory. You’ll find out how much it’s worth later when you try it on.

“Well, show me around? We came here to shop, after all.” You say to her, to which she chuckles and nods. She turns around and walks off, gesturing to follow her, so you do!

“Like I said earlier, your loadout is way too outdated. Stat-wise it’s okay, but a lot of weapons have little tricks to them that they don’t tell you about – it makes them a cut above the rest! Ones that fire different types of bullets, some that have odd functions – we’ll find some that work for you! Can I see the revolvers you got?” You open your inventory wordlessly and hand them to her, and she takes them while giving them a good look over. “Yep, these would look normal to any regular player, but these are a little lighter – the triggers are meant to be pulled faster, and they have a little mechanism that makes the bullets go farther. Viola always has high quality guns!”

“And they don’t…tell you that? Are those good for competitive play?” You’re baffled by the concept of something not appearing on the stats screen, as stuff like this wouldn’t have been kosher in the olden days.

“Absolutely! If you go into an official match, they screen everything you load up with. It can detect every little thing about your guns and armor, and if it gives you a major unfair advantage over other players, they’ll make you swap them out. These, though? Completely good to go.” She leads you into a shop with quite a few people inside. “It’s just like how a lot of items that are in casual won’t drop in ranked – the cube you found wouldn’t fly whatsoever in a match that matters rank-wise!”

What happened to just being able to pick up a gun and shoot? If you had all of this to worry about back then, you’d have been fucked.

“Does that mean some guns are…player-made? It doesn’t sound like the base guns from the game are any good.”

“You’re correct! When Auxilia Systems made the big attempt to draw in a lot of other audiences, they enabled a lot of different mechanics and ways to play. That’s why they put in swords, different armors, and player-oriented game mechanics like gunsmithing! That’s why a lot of stuff costs so much.”

You shake your head and look around at the store you’ve been pulled into – the area around the counter has a few guns on display, but other than that it seems to be mainly geared towards secondary equipment. Grenades, knives, little gadgets that you don’t know what the fuck they do – there’s so much everywhere!

“Here’s our first stop – we need to get you some stuff that will take him off guard. You didn’t even have any grenades in your last match!” She turns around and faces you, eyes alight with excitement – she’s getting a lot of enjoyment out of this, huh?

The both of you move towards the shelves with a modicum of enthusiasm – you’re looking forwards to finding a bunch of things you haven’t seen before, and Cinder talks to you all the while.

“Alright, so you know how you found the backpack at the railing?” She whispers into your ear as you both look through the items – there’s a lot less than you were expecting, maybe all of the people here snatched up the good deals? If so, that’d be real shitty luck.

“Yeah?”

“You can configure everything that’s in that. Since you hopped right into the game, I assume they gave you the default loadout – rope, binoculars, patches, and a flashlight?” You nod to her as you’re about to reach out for an interesting looking grenade with pulsing purple lights, but another patron snatches it just before you’re about to grab it. “This stuff is all what would go inside of it – things are different now, you don’t spawn with your secondary equipment. It’s all within the bag.”

That seems a little bit silly, but if all of the product placement around the market has told you anything, you understand exactly why it’s that way. All for that sponsorship money.

It takes a long while for you to get through these shelves – everything useful has been taken by the din of shoppers, and all you’re able to secure is a piece of rope that’s moderately better than the starting version. Same length of rope overall, only a bit stronger and not as easy to cut – oh joy! You’ll sure trip up Rock with that, yes you will.

“Aw, maaaan…looks like we got unlucky. I was hoping we’d be faster than everyone else.” She looks at you with a bit of a crestfallen face, but she perks up shortly afterwards and punches you in the shoulder. “Must be that cheater’s karma coming back, huh?”

“I only cheated once, fuck you!” She snickers, and you try to smile back. You won’t bring up the fact that your parents fucking dumped you because you managed to convince them that this was more important than your education, only for them to find out you fucked up in the final match due to your own stupidity and lost everything you’d worked for.

Boy, isn’t your life just a gem?

Cinder claps you on the shoulder and moves you towards the front of the store, some of the crowd beginning to exit due to similarly finding the equipment shelves mostly empty. You overhear some customers grumbling about this fact, but none cause much of a fuss – looks like this must be a purely player-item run store, because you can reasonably assume that an Auxilia weapon store would have no end to their supplies.

“Alright, so before we go perusing from here, I gotta catch you up to speed on some info. Have you seen any of Rock’s matches?” Cinder asks you, and you shake your head as a negative. The only time you’ve ever seen him play is when you were up against him, and the most you can remember is that he used a pretty fucking big gun. “Well, I’ll tell you this beforehand just so we can find something that’ll go against him well. He uses an LMG that fires twice as fast as it should from what I can tell, and he has a sword the size of his entire body.”

“…is there anyone who doesn’t use a sword now? And is that even legal?” You ask incredulously, making a vow right then and there that you will never pick up a sword in this game as long as you can help it. This is an FPS, not a fantasy game goddamnit! The absolute state of the community appalls you. Your knife has always suited you just fine – even if you have to move on with the rest of your equipment, you won’t give into peer pressure!

“I mean, yeah? It’s not like it’s an unfair weapon – all you need to do is dodge.”

You can concede that.

“Back to the matter though, his style is primarily geared towards suppressing the opponent and then closing in with the sword. I’ve been looking him up since yesterday, and it’s…well, it’s a sight to behold. What can we buy here that will counter that?”

Hoo, boy. Decisions!

>An up close build will suit you just fine – his LMG will be a non-factor if he’s too busy swinging the sword. You’ll look for shotguns and other close-range apparatus.
>Focusing on locking down the mid-range is a good tactic – if you can find an assault rifle more accurate than his gun, you’ll have the match in the bag as long as he doesn’t have any tricks.
>Long range is an absolute counter to his style – you can keep yourself hidden away in the shadows and try to pick off his health. Sniper rifles are a go this time around.
>Man, why the fuck do you care what his style is? That fight against that Viola lady made you pretty damn confident – you have two revolvers, why do you need to buy anything else? You’ll put a stop to this bitch with style alone.

“I figure that long-range is a good choice . Even if he tries to suppress me with his LMG, I’ll have the range advantage – plus since I won’t be close to him, he won’t have an opportunity to use the sword. If he charges me, I’ll probably be fucked – that’s why I won’t let him.” You explain your reasoning to Cinder as you look through the gun racks – some guns look sleek, others colorful, and most are being snapped off the shelves as quick as a flash. Even so, you make no move to grab one yourself – none have really caught your eye as of yet.

You glance over at Cinder to see if she’s found anything, and you find her looking at you with her eyes shining.

“Long range, huh? Yeah, that’s a good idea…especially for practice…” She mumbles to herself, lost in her own little world as she strokes her chin with her thumb and forefinger. Today was the day you truly have learned that Cinder is a fucking Warscape nerd – you legitimately haven’t seen her get this excited other than the times she won a tournament of moderate renown. With her being dead to the world, you turn your attention back to the shelf – and then you see it.

There’s a solitary rifle sitting on the rack, untouched as of now. It seems to be made of a very sleek wood, the surface flawless until you reach the barrel. The wood around there is cracked and blackened, scorched by what seemed to be a terrible flame. Embers still glow an angry red, and you reach out and snatch it as soon as you see someone else make a move.

>SKF-03 – Skyfire
>Creator: Dahlia
>DMG to limbs: 25 HP, DMG to body: 60 HP, DMG to head: 85 HP
>Ammunition: 6 rounds.

You turn it over in your hands and see a small lever right next to the trigger, sticking out in a way that wouldn’t interfere with your grip. You flick it, and you see a small notification pop up in front of the gun.

>Burst fire activated.

Well, looks like you’ve found the rifle you need.

“Oi, Cinder. How’s this one look?” You snap her out of her reverie and she looks to you, her eyes widening as she yanks the gun from your grip.

“H-Holy shit? One of Dahlia’s weapons? HERE!?” She starts mumbling to herself as she frantically inspects each and every inch of the weapon, shoving it back into your arms with force.

“Is that…good?”

“We’re buying this for you. End of story. This isn’t something we can miss out on.”

Well, Cinder is awfully adamant on this decision, and you certainly aren’t going to say no to a rifle that feels this good to hold. It feels like it’s almost made for your grip, honestly – even in the fight against 0phelia, the assault rifle felt a little clunky.

Is that all of the guns you need?

“Actually, wait. Think I’ll grab something else just to cover my bases.” You say to Cinder, turning around and moving through racks until you find an assortment of shotguns still left untaken by the vultures of capitalism. You pick each one and give it a once-over, none of them seem particularly low quality and all have different nuances to them. How they managed to survive this crowd is beyond you.

What one do you think you’ll go with?

>A single-barreled shotgun that’s easy to handle and could easily fit onto the back of your belt. It’s quick to reload due to having only a single capacity chamber, but the damage is a bit lower than the norm. DMG to limbs: 20 HP, DMG to body: 40 HP, DMG to head: 70 HP.

Besides, you don’t intend to use it unless he closes in – if you can prevent that from happening entirely, you’ll be golden. You make your way over to Cinder once more and hand her the gun.

She gives it a quick check and clicks her tongue, handing it back to you with a small bit of dissatisfaction. This doesn’t exactly surprise you though – Cinder uses dual shotguns as her regular load-out when she plays, so her eye is a lot more developed than yours in that sense. She leads you up to the counter and waits for the queue to leave, taking the rope and guns from you once more and handing them to the man behind the counter. He’s bald and has quite prominent facial hair, hands moving quite deftly for a man of his stature. He taps a few buttons on a menu in front of him, and then you see a window pop up in front of Cinder.

>SKF-03 - $25,500,000
>DBL-43 - $100,000
>Mk. 2 Rope - $500

“Huh!?” You find yourself saying as you stare at the price of the sniper rifle – that would have taken nearly half of your old bank account in game if you bought it yourself!

“Yeah, Dahlia’s weapons are some of the best you can get in this entire game. She’s a master gunsmith! I’m surprised that one was here – I came here because they sell good stuff for cheap! This is worth it, though.” She pays the price in full, and then hands off the items to you.

Did she just…buy you a gun that’s worth $25 million? You won’t look a gift horse in the mouth, but…damn. She’s rich.

>SKF-03 – Skyfire acquired!
>DBL-43 shotgun acquired!
>Mk. 2 Rope acquired!

After this Cinder moves you out into the street once more, maneuvering you to a quieter place as she turns to face you.

“Well, we got some guns for you! I’d wager that’ll at least put a few kinks in Rock’s gameplan, that’s for sure. Wish I could tell you what equipment he has, but as far as I can tell he doesn’t use any. What should we do now?”

>Ask her if you can practice – time to put these guns to the test.

>>
“Well, I seem to have my guns now. When do we start practice?” You ask her, leaning against the wall as you idly begin equipping the guns to your avatar. You’ll save the outfit for another time – it’ll be a surprise for the big event, you guess? You dunno, you’re just itching to put these guns to the test – might as well get into the spirit of things since you’re going to be playing for a while anyways.

Look at how far you’ve come – shunning the game a few days ago to brushing up on everything new about it! In reality you haven’t come very far at all, but at least you’re not mindlessly staring at your ceiling over everything 0phelia’s done. Gotta take the good with the bad, even if there’s not a lot of good to be found.

Cinder claps her hands together and looks at you mischievously, cracking her knuckles and smirking as she turns to face you.

“Well, I was going to put you in a few random 1v1s and watch if you’d allow me…but now that you’ve gone for a long-range loadout, I have a better plan!” She withdraws her shotguns from her inventory and shows them off – they’re mainly black, however there are images painted on each that resemble a dragon breathing fire. She giggles as you openly check them out, holstering them at her after you’ve gotten a good long look. “I’d say that my style is baaaasically pretty close to Rock’s, minus the LMG. I like to get close, and he’s gonna try to get close to you immediately – so as your teacher,” She winks as she calls back to your statement in your apartment, “Your first practice lesson is to beat me, if you think you’re up for it~?”

You blink at her as she stares you down.

Oh boy.

>Accept her challenge – Cinder will be a hard obstacle to start with, but you’ll rise to the task.
>Decline – you’d rather start with some rando’s and make your way up to her towards the end.

[And this is where I’m leaving it for the night, anons. I’m tired and I need some sleep! Apologies for being mildly sporadic throughout the day, I’ll try my best to make up for it in the morning! Also going to be making a proper character sheet for you guys just so you can keep track of inventory and OTHER THINGS™. [Good morning, everyone! I slept like a rock, so sorry for the late start. Here’s a nice character sheet for our lovely main character: https://pastebin.com/uWMa5axC. Never made one of those before so please critique me on it so I can fix it lmao. Time to get back to it!]

You look at Cinder for a few seconds after she proposes her practice idea, her mouth set in a mischievous grin and eyes narrowed in challenge. Judging by her being a fan of you when everything went down in the past, you can pretty much guess that half of this for her is just wanting to face you. Hell, even before she knew who you really were she kept asking you to play her!

Her point is very valid though – from the sounds of it, her playstyle is pretty similar to Rock’s. It would only be logical to test this build against her.

“…alright, sure. Let’s play a round.” You eventually say to her, running your hand through this obnoxiously long hair you had chosen. As soon as you get out of sight of the public, you’re switching back to your regular style – blonde just isn’t your jam, and neither is long hair.

“Hell yeah!” Cinder exclaims, attracting the view of a few passerby’s as she jumps and claps her hands together. She mutters to herself as she flips through her menu, hands moving very fast as she organizes something or other. You see the fruits of her labor shortly as her long hair begins to shorten instantaneously, and her nice blouse turns into a grey undershirt with a red and white hoodie. On one arm, her username is embroidered in crimson red font, while the other arm has a few product placements visible. Some tech firm, and some fast food joint? You’ve never heard of them.

Either way, she certainly looks trendy compared to you – all you have is your white t-shirt and cargo pants! You do have that special outfit that she commissioned for you, but you don’t want to chance ruining it before the big fight against Rock.

“Let’s get to it, then?” She asks you, her eyes bright with joy.

You open your mouth to respond.

>Yeah – let’s test these guns out and see how well they do.
>Actually, you want to find different clothes. You have STYLISTIC STANDARDS.

“Yeah. Don’t go too hard on me, alright?” You ask her, opening your menu to take you back to your personal room. She puts her hand on her chin as if she’s thinking about it, and then she reaches forward to pat you on the shoulder hard.

“Well, you’re not gonna learn unless I go full throttle, right? I’m not going to baby you, Mr. Prodigy~!” She snickers as you cringe in displeasure, tapping the menu button and fading away into red polygons. You follow suit directly afterwards, vowing to get her back for that one.

You reappear on the couch of your base, taking in the scenery once more as you stand up. When you logged in earlier today, you adjusted the lighting so it wasn’t as dark as it was before – rather than a deep blue, it’s now more in line with your arcade’s lighting. You glance towards the matchmaking pedestal and yep, the same robot girl is standing next to it and watching you. Why did Auxilia even make the bands be associated with robot girls? You don’t understand, but you walk towards it regardless.

“Have anything to say today, bot?” You ask it, putting your hand on the pedestal. She says nothing, but you think you catch a reproachful look as her form liquefies and wraps around your wrist. A second later, you’re sent to the lobby.

Cinder already has an invitation ready by the time you get there, so you waste no time in clicking it. Against 0phelia you found yourself contemplating the fact that you were playing the damn game in the first place, but you feel calmer about the whole ordeal at the moment. With Cinder there’s no stakes, so maybe you can find it within yourself to enjoy this game against her – today will be the only day you can do so, because tomorrow will be filled with the dreaded phenomenon known as ARENA PREPARATION.

You really wish Rock could have found a random arcade to do it in (since yours is trashed), but he took your idea of doing it publicly and fucking ran with it. Doubly so since it’ll be the exhibition before an actual event, which means there’s gonna be an entire crowd present. JOY. YOU LOVE THAT IDEA. 100%.

You give a sigh before you load into the game. You’ve been sighing a lot recently.

[Here’s the part where I’ve rolled for a few maps, and you get to vote on one of the three! This won’t be happening against Rock because competitive, but this is casual. All of your loadout information is on the sheet!]

Levels are a combination of both bragging rights and a way of acquiring money and tickets for loot-boxes.

>>3532957
Funnily enough, the loot-box tickets are sort of the materials for crafting weapons? Cinder wouldn't know this because she doesn't give two shits about doing it herself, but gunsmithing requires a base weapon to model after. That's why there are multiple tiers to the tickets - the better the base gun, the better the end product will be. When Cinder said "hey base guns aren't worth a damn anymore", they are but in a different way! Also you need to funnel a shit-ton of money into it, as well as extra if you want to custom design certain bits of it...it's a very time consuming process, and you need to play a lot to be able to do it. Sorry for the sudden text wall, I was looking for an excuse to explain gunsmithing - for both you guys to know and also for me to solidify the aspects!

As the game world comes to life around you, the first thing you notice is that you’re no longer in a standing position.

Your body is hunched over on a stone slab jutting out from the wall, your head down between your arms and legs. When you pull it up to observe your surroundings, you find that you can’t really see... anything. There’s no light in the room other than what seeps in from a few flickering fluorescent bulbs in the hallway, dim enough that all you can make out is your exit - a door hanging off of its hinges. The air around you is freezing, and you can hear the booming sounds of waves crashing against a distant surface.

This is…whatever you were expecting to come into, it wasn’t this. It’s quite eerie, the atmosphere being something that could have been taken out of a horror game. You step forward and nearly trip, a smattering of rubble and a bag blocking your way. Knowing what it contains already, you don’t hesitate in picking up the bag and slinging it over your shoulder. From the looks of things, the game’s decided the placement of your weapons for you – your revolver and shotgun are holstered to each side of your pants, and your sniper rifle is firmly strapped to your back.

As soon as the bag is firmly set in place, a familiar robotic voice booms down the empty halls, the acoustics and volume making you wince.

“Participants have found their starting items. Invulnerability has been removed.” Unlike the first time this occurred, you see a blue sheen drift away from your body into the darkness – you must not have seen it due to it being daytime before. “The time limit has been set at one hour. Good luck, participants. The match is officially started.”

Looks like you better get moving.

You drop down and attempt to feel your way through the rubble of the room – the floor’s practically covered in the stuff, and you find yourself having to move a lot of it out of the way just to see if anything’s underneath. It’s a bit of a process, considering how dim the light is! Fortunately, you do find something – it’s not the greatest, but it’s another melee weapon in case your knife goes missing.

>Nightstick acquired!
>DMG to limbs: 15 HP, DMG to body: 25 HP, DMG to head: 40 HP.

After sifting one side of the room, you decide to go to the other and continue the process. As you do, you mentally remark how lifelike this game feels now. Whilst you didn’t quite get the chance to really take it in during the match with 0phelia, you can feel the varying textures of the rock surrounding your hands, as well as the frigid air that fills this room. It must have taken Auxilia Systems more effort than you can imagine to encode all of this, but it certainly makes for a more realistic experience.

You’re starting to think that you won’t find anything at all within this chamber, but as you go to draw your hand back and move on, you graze what seems to be a small and long cardboard box. You hurriedly fish it out while trying to listen to the outsides of the room – no sound other than the waves, which must mean Cinder’s somewhere else. Upon inspecting it, you’re surprised to find a pack of flares!

>Pack of flares acquired! Five remaining.

These aren’t like the ones you’d find nowadays – the new flares are squarer shaped, these are as old-fashioned as can be. Hey, looks like you have a light source other than the flashlight now!

>Move out into the hallways

We should probably find a map or something. You know, to best situate ourselves
>>
You stand up and brush the dust and dirt from your hands, pulling the revolver from it’s holster and moving into the hallway, aiming from left to right as you scan the hallway for any hidden threats. When it’s apparent that she hasn’t gotten the drop on you, you lower the gun but do not put it away.

As you look around, you can figure right away that you are in a prison, albeit one in a state of abandonment. Cells litter this hallway, and at each end of it lies a door. As stated earlier, you can see that the fluorescent bulbs haven’t been changed in a very long time, and your cell is not the only one to be in a state of disrepair. A lot of the metal bars have been eroded by time, and many of the rooms that you can see are in a similar predicament as yours – rubble everywhere.

Fucking hell, this isn’t the map you were expecting – it also puts you at a bit of a disadvantage due to your primary weapon, however you still have your new shotgun! You’re glad you took the time to pick out a supporting weapon.

You move and try some of the cell doors as you make your way down the hallway – unlike yours, none are off of the hinges and each one is locked. You could probably brute force your way in if you needed to, but time was of the essence – your eyes immediately turn upwards, and you spot what you’re looking for.

Two cameras at each end of the room that are seemingly still functional, if the red LED light was anything to judge by. It must mean that they aren’t activated, and that implies that there are other cameras within the complex. Looks like you know what to look for! You pace to each end of the hallway and test the doors – they are unlocked, and have signs indicating where they lead to.

Which door do you take?

>The one leading upwards – the sign indicates that it leads to one of the upper cell blocks, mess hall, and warden’s room.

You spend a few seconds considering between the two doors, before finally deciding to take the downwards staircase. If any room would have cameras, it would have to be the security room – as well as that, there could still be some goodies left over in the armory if you were lucky.

You move through the door and step onto the staircase, and you cringe when the metal creaks under your feet. This staircase is just as fucked as the rest of the prison – at least it’s not missing steps, so you manage to go down as slowly as possible in order to not make much noise. Every time you hear something off, you pause and raise your revolver an inch higher. Eventually you make the trek down and find another door leading to another cell block. There are indicators of other rooms here, but they’ve been scratched out.

Well, this floor must be bigger than the one you just came from, as it seemed to only contain that hallway.

Seeing no other way around it, you brace yourself against the wall and edge open the door with your revolver ready. It makes a minimal amount of noise, as you’re being careful. You don’t know if Cinder spawned above or below you, so caution is of the highest importance. When you open the door, you’re greeted with another long hallway that looks marginally less shitty than yours. The bars aren’t as degraded, and the floor is actually clean for the most part – if you were to ascribe a meaning to it, it could be because not a lot of people came down here.

It’s pointless to speculate that, though, since it’s just a game.

>Move to the end and look for the security room, you need visuals on this place.

[BOY IT’S JUST MY FAVORITE THING WHEN THE INTERNET GOES OUT. At this current time looking to see signs of Cinder wins so if the vote’s changed by the time I post this I do apologize. Sorry for the inconvenience, feel like I haven’t been doing the greatest today writing wise.]

You begin to make your way down to the hallway’s end when you pause – how do you know she hasn’t been here already? If you spawned in an area that leads both up and down – it would make sense to guess that you’ve spawned in the middle of the map. You sigh and slow your walk, keeping your eyes peeled as you scan the hallway – it was always best to be safe and not sorry, you know this well.

As you scan the hallway, you can’t really find much that would show she’s been here – the floor’s mostly clean so no footprints can be seen, as well as the door visible at the other being firmly shut. There aren’t any traps in place, so you think you can deduce that she hasn’t been through this wing – with that in mind, she’s either deeper in the complex or up above somewhere. You have too little information to run on right now, so there’s no point in speculating.

You shrug to yourself and walk back towards the door that should lead to the security room when something takes you off guard; you hear a loud crash from behind you – it sounds like metal being slammed against a wall, and the noise nearly deafens you as it fills up the entire hallway.

>Rush to the door and take cover behind it – she isn’t taking you alive!

[That's really cute anon, thank you so much!]

That’s about all it takes for the slowing creeping tension within you to snap, and you rush forward like a horse out of the gate and muscle your way through the door. It makes a bit of a crash as you whip around the corner, peeking around the corner while aiming your revolver.

Silence. Nothing has changed in the hall behind you.

You curse as you try to mentally jump through the mental hoops of what that could have been – was it a rusted door falling off of it’s frame? Something being tossed as an intimidation tactic? You determined that this place has pretty good acoustics earlier – if you had to guess, whatever it was could have been all the way up the complex and nowhere near you. Regardless, you give it a minute just to make sure that she’s not about to jump down your throat with guns blazing, and you let out a shuddering sigh.

She’s definitely fucking with you, and you have no doubt in your mind that it’s payback for earlier.

You turn around and look into the room with a sigh, running a hand through your now regular hair. It appears that this area isn’t really a proper room – it just leads to three others. Man, this prison layout is complex – you make a mental note to find a map as soon as you can. The only thing occupying this room is a desk in front of the farthest door – all it has on it is an unplugged computer and a few scattered pencils. You move over and look at each of the doors – all of the labels are scratched out, similarly to the one leading to the cellblock behind you.

What do you do?

You walk around the desk and give it a once over – it seems that the computer screen has been smashed in by something or other, the shards scattered over the ground and wooden surface. Out of curiosity you pick up one of the pens and scribble across the back of your hand, and hey, there’s actually ink inside of it! That’s a damn cool detail actually, if you do say so yourself.

You crouch down and begin rifling through the various drawers in the desk – from the little details you can pick up here and there, you ascertain that this desk belonged to a form of security guard. Unfortunately, there’s no map to be found, however just when you’re about to turn away and choose a door, you notice something a bit odd.

Hey, this drawer has a false bottom!

You feel around a bit and manage to trigger whatever’s holding it in place, and as it slides open the light from the cell block glints off of what appears to be three syringes bound by tape? You remove them and bring them closer to your face – these are…tranquilizers?

>Tranquilizer syringes (x3) acquired!

You honestly don’t see how you can use these unless you rig up a trap, and until you have a moderate idea of where she’s going to be, you don’t want to waste them. Into the bag of mystery they go! Now let’s hope that you don’t accidentally prick your finger on one.

[So, I have been invited to a barbeque, and I’ll be skedaddling until later. Really sorry about being gone for a lot of the day, I haaaaaate this. I’ll try my best to make it up to you when I get back!]

You take a step back and give each door a good long look, occasionally taking a glance behind you just to make sure that Cinder hasn’t somehow crept into the room. You haven’t seen her play very much other than the night you stayed to watch her in the arcade, but you know she’s a very fast girl – she’ll close in and try to finish the fight as quick as possible. That’s the key difference between her and Rock – she goes in fast, and he goes slow.

You shrug your shoulders and walk over to the door behind the desk, testing it to make sure it’s not locked – thankfully you don’t need to kick it in, so you instead walk inside with your gun drawn. What greets you is the room you’d been looking for!

A bunch of tables and desks are strewn about the room, some flipped over and some just haphazardly placed. It looks like a small bomb went off in the middle of the room, the dark tiles scorched and scarred from heat and shrapnel. You walk in further, doing a wide sweep of the room just to make sure nothing’s funky. You spot some more broken computers along with another door that seems very sturdy, and the sign is once again scratched out of it.

Could that be the door you’re looking for? If you can get access to the cameras, you don’t even need to go anywhere – you can just rig up a trap and funnel her into the hallway!

You approach the door, sliding your revolver back into it’s holster and instead drawing out the shotgun. You don’t know what’s behind the door – and you’d rather have a big-ass shotgun rather than the revolver if something came at you. You gently test the handle and find it to be unlocked, but this time you take it a step further – you investigate every angle that you can, trying to make sure that nothing on this side of the door is going to hurt you.

You wonder to yourself if you’re being a little overly cautious, but you then mentally slap yourself for ever assuming that being overly cautious WASN’T the way to go – this is Warscape and players are tricky. You recall an old story from Cinder about how she shortened her avatar’s hair after too many players used it to pull her back into close range.

Shit’s wild, dude.

After judging that there was nothing on this side of the door that would get you, you swallow and wrap your hand around the door, aiming the shotgun one handed at where someone’s head would be.

“Here goes nothing…” You murmur, taking a deep breath and forcing the door open with all your might.

As you open the door, you’re not sure what alerts you to the fact that something’s wrong – it could be that the door was a bit more difficult than it should be to open, it could have been the feeling in the air shifting, it could have been anything really! You pause to consider it, but the knife doesn’t care about your musings – a wire snaps and it comes flying towards you at high speeds.

Your arm snaps up as if it has a mind of it’s own, putting the butt of your shotgun in front of your head as fast as you can. A moment later, a loud THUNK fills the corridor, and all goes silent.

Holy shit, you almost got stabbed in the fucking eye!

[PERMANENT SKILL DISCOVERED: Habitual Reflexes (see character sheet for more information)]

You let out a shuddering breath as you reach up and unstick the knife from your gun, giving it a once over. It’s quality is very low – enough so that it looks like a warped hunk of metal – so you throw it aside without a second thought. You know this isn’t Cinder’s doing – for one, she’s too proud to use shitty weapons. For two, she uses a sword.

You peer into the room, being careful of any potential tricks that might spring out at you. It seems to lead into a bigger room with a lot of shelves and stands strewn about – could it be the armory that was mentioned on the sign earlier? You want to go inside to give it a once over, but…you’re hesitant. More traps could lay beyond the threshold, and that’s not even considering wherever Cinder is.

What do you do?

[Good morning! Getting started a little early today to make up for ending early yesterday. Let’s get to it!]

You decide that scouring the armory for items is more important at the moment – you want every edge you can get against Cinder, so you move further into the room as carefully as you can. With the loud slam from earlier and the threat of traps looming over your mind, you’re about as twitchy as one could be as you sort through the lockers and racks.

The armory unfortunately looks pretty barren, the room having been worked over by something that doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. The amount of detail is impressive; however, it does no help in assisting your search for SICK LOOT. Each locker is empty, each shelf is bare – hell, there’s nothing even hidden in the small alcoves in the wall. You lean against the wall and look around the room, searching for anything of interest – other than a door with yet another nameplate scratched out, you see nothing.

Looks like you’re shit out of luck this time around! You go to walk towards the door with a bit of a sigh, when you hear the sound of something rolling – a second later, something small drops on your head and sends a bit of a shock through you. You reach up and catch it before it falls to the ground – a silver revolver clip filled with red bullets? Huh. Weird. You empty the bullets into your hand and store them with the rest of your ammunition.

>Strange revolver bullets acquired!
>Revolver ammo: 6/54

The number of items in this game nowadays is insane to you, but you aren’t gonna lose sleep over it.

You walk towards the door and find yourself fishing out the crimson bullets that you just stored in your belt, swapping them into the revolver’s chambers. You really should have done this in the first place, you think to yourself. That was an unnecessary movement that could have been avoided, you think to yourself. Such bad form from a former professional, really.

The you from the past turns his head away with a look of disappointment.

Regardless of pointless personal shame (you broody motherfucker), you brace yourself against the wall next to the door and put your hand on the door handle. Not willing to take the chance of standing in the open in case of another sudden knife attack, you turn the handle and push it open, moving your hand just in time for another knife to come flinging out. Thankfully you thought to not stand in front of the door this time, so it slices through the air harmlessly and clatters to the ground.

If nothing else, this set of rooms has more action than you’ve seen all game!

You turn the corner and aim your shotgun as you move into the new room, keeping your eyes peeled for any oddities. There’s a lot of shoddy looking bunk beds in this room, indicating immediately that this isn’t the room you’re looking for at all. If you had to put an actual name to it, you’d say it’s the barracks for any guards – regardless of it’s purpose, you let out an irritated sigh. You give this room a cursory once over and don’t even bother trying to loot it, you’ve spent too much time in this security wing. Stepping back and closing the door as you do, you walk back into the main security room.

Well, what the fuck do you do now?

>Choose one of the two unopened doors – you have no idea where they lead.
>Go back the way you came and ascend to a higher floor – you won’t give her any more time to gain ground.

Well, we learned something important, this is an extremely confined level. Once the fighting starts, we're not going to be able to get behind Cinder. Of course that means she's going to have to follow us wherever we go too.
>>
You walk outside of the security and take a look around, contemplating entering one of the other two doors just to see where they would go. You end up shaking your head and moving into the cleaner cellblock however – you don’t want to risk going deeper into the complex and trapping yourself into an enclosed space, but you do take a mental note about the barracks. If the going gets tough, you can try to draw her down here and finish her off in closed quarters – considering her vast experience over you in CQC however, you won’t be holding your breath on that one.

As you ascend to your starting cellblock, the frigid air returns and begins goosebumps across your virtual arms. You’re not particularly sure why this floor is so cold, but you don’t think about it too much – you open the door to the starting area and close it gently behind you, because you’re not quite sure how close she could be at this point in time.

As you move forwards, you try to throw together a game plan in your head – how will you beat her in this environment? It’s the literal antithesis of the build you had gone for – long range doesn’t work in a map like this. You have the shotgun and revolver, but she has the raw skill to close the difference and put an end to things fast. The only thing you can think of is trying to jab a tranquilizer syringe into her, even if you don’t know the exact effect – you doubt it will fully put her to sleep gameplay wise, but maybe it will slow her down some? The syringe in the match against 0phelia sped you up when you used it, so it would make sense to have an item that did the opposite effect.

Your musings are promptly cut short by a strange metallic whine coming from above you – not the sort that you’ve learned to associate with 0phelia’s spider mines, but more…electronic. You look up and that’s when it happens – a loud screech followed by the fluorescent lights cutting out. You look behind at the lower staircase door hurriedly, only to find that light fixture has gone dead as well.

Welp, you’re back to not being able to see jack shit. Wonderful!

>Take out your flashlight and attach it to one of your guns.
>Use a flare as a makeshift torch – your flashlight would give your position away if it’s on, and you can always throw the flare.

You curse to yourself and look towards the ceiling – the formerly red lights of the cameras are now green, signifying that they are on and active. Looks like she must have found the cameras before you – and that tells you that the cameras must have been on the top floor and not the bottom. If they have night vision – and they probably do – she knows exactly where you are now.

Welp. That’s a fun thing to know, you guess! If she happens to have night vision as well, you'll be royally fucked.

You move towards the stairs and crouch low to the ground, determined to make yourself a smaller target while also making as little noise as possible. You pull out your revolver and knife, ready to fire the strange bullets and defend against her sword if needed. Judging by what Cinder told you about this revolver in the first place, it’s designed to have the trigger pulled in quick succession – perhaps you can empty the clip into her before she even gets a move off? You doubt that you’d get that lucky.

Regardless, you slowly begin ascending the stairs. These ones seem less degraded than those that you took down to the security room, and thankfully your ascent is mostly silent other than the tapping of your feet against the metal. You know that you’ve gotten to the door when the end of your revolver taps against it, and you stand to take place behind the wall next to it.

Anything could be beyond this door, it’s completely new territory for you. How do you approach it?

>Equip your flashlight and open the door – if Cinder happens to have found a night-vision item, it’ll disorient her while also revealing her position.
>Toss in one of the flares – the sudden light will throw her off and you can fire on her from behind the door without worry.

As you brace against the wall, you consider the possibility that Cinder could be beyond this door. For all you know she’s walking towards the door, guns ready – if she were to walk through at this very moment, you’d be fucked. The fact that she could have night vision only doubles your tension – why would she cut off power to the prison if she couldn’t see you once it’s gone? You grit your teeth and reach into your bag, eventually finding the square box of flares – you open up the flimsy cardboard and grab one, positioning one of your hands on the door handle as you ready the flare.

You it against the wall and the room is bathed in red light – the flickering of the sparks coming from the top casts wicked shadows across the walls, but you don’t keep it around long enough to take in the sight. You turn the handle and open the door, ignoring the metal squeaking as you fling the flare into the room. You wait and listen for any sound or reaction – when none comes, you re-equip your revolver and turn the corner into the room.

If there was normal lighting in the room, you suspect that it wouldn’t look nearly as creepy as it does at the current moment. It’s a long hallway with a multitude of doors leading to who knows where, various posters stuck up on the wall. Some are motivational, others have information that you don’t find yourself caring about – all in all, it’s a pretty unremarkable room. The air is colder in here than below, and you find yourself rubbing your arms with a free hand to generate some heat as you step forward to inspect the doors.

>Go through the double doors at the end of the hallway – they have no signs, so you could be heading anywhere by going through them.
>Go through the door labeled mess hall – you don’t know what might be found in there, but it’s another layer to your mental map.

You sigh and make your way towards the double doors, the echo of your footsteps against the floor seemingly bouncing off of every wall. You frown when you reach them – this prison just seems to be door after door after door! You feel like you need a fucking map just to orient yourself to the environment – on top of that, there hasn’t been any action yet and that makes you feel antsy. Where the fuck could she be, and how big is this complex? Why did Auxilia Systems make the map this way – while there’s ample opportunity for close quarters combat, what’s the use if it takes forever to get through?

You shake your head and scout around the door, making sure there’s no hidden mechanisms on this side that would surprise you once you opened it. That encounter down in the armory has left you very nervous when it comes to traps, so you’ve been doing this for every door – while it’s impossible to tell what’s on the other side until you open it, taking every precaution beforehand is wholly necessary in this clusterfuck of a map. When you’re satisfied, you go to open the doors – they extend and take up the entire wall, so there’s not anywhere for you to hide.

When you open the door, it’s almost as if you can hear fate laughing at your thoughts – the bang of a gun fills the hallway.

[I’m gonna go and make myself some lunch, so be back soon! Thank you very much for reading, and I hope you’ve enjoyed so far.]

You immediately throw yourself to the side as soon as you hear the gunshot, but it’s not fast enough – the bullet goes square through your hand, and the room falls silent as you aim your own gun towards the door.

>Player: Nova
>HP: 90/100 (-10 HP)

When it’s apparent that Cinder isn’t about to run charging into the room, you get yourself up off of the floor and peek through the open door with your gun still aimed. Cinder is nowhere to be seen, so you hesitantly go and pick up the flare, using it as light to try and gauge what the fuck just happened. When you find it, you have no doubt in your mind that it was Cinder who set this particular trap.

A revolver is wedged between two steps of the stairs that lead upwards, it’s barrel angled at where your head should be. The gun is still smoking, and you can vaguely see the flare’s light glinting off of two barely hidden wires that were attached to the handles on the opposite side. You let out an irritated sigh and go to pick up the revolver, inspecting it for bullets and finding that the only one in the chamber was the one fired. You glance up to the top of the stairs and see another camera – instead of it being stationary, it’s moving side to side rapidly.

She’s not only watching you, she’s toying with you.

>Shoot the camera.
>Shake your head and move up the stairs.
>Take the revolver and the wires – you’ll rig up a trap of your own where she won’t expect it.

You smirk at the camera and aim towards it with your revolver, lining it up in your sights as Cinder manipulates it around. She starts from side to side, then up and down, then in a circle – you can’t help but find this amusing as your gun breaks the silence, the camera going up in flames as soon as the bullet hits it. Holy shit, so those red bullets you have are incendiary rounds! If only you had found a full box of those, then you’d be set!

>Revolver ammo: 5/54 (-1)

You take the other revolver and slide it between your belt and pants, not having a holster for it at this point in time. You also take the wires and begin concocting a payback plan – how can you set off a trap with this? The logical conclusion would be to find a room, take out the cameras, and then lie in wait – if she got taken off guard with the revolver firing, you’d be able to descend and potentially make quick work of her. Doubly so if you outfitted it with some of the fire bullets.

There’s so much shit to consider – but you’d probably best get a move on.

>Move up the stairs and see what lies through the door at the top.
>Find a place to hunker down and set up a trap – you’d force her to come to you.
>Go back into the infirmary and try to find some medical items. [This will require a roll.]

[Apologies for the wait, words were being a bitch!]

You head back into the hallway and unsheathe your new baton from your belt, testing its weight as you approach one of the cameras. You rear your arm back, give a mighty swing, and the camera explodes in a shower of sparks as it deactivates. You repeat this process with three others – it takes a minute or so, but you can finally breathe easily once it's done.

“30 minutes remaining.” The robotic voice echoes throughout the map once more, pushing you to look around at some of the doors. You’re pretty certain that she’s been around here, but you aren’t picking up any clues as to which room she might have gone through. In the interest of expediency, you settle for opening all of them. No more traps spring out at you, and you find yourself thoroughly stumped.

“Well, where the fuck is she?” You say to yourself, walking into the mess hall and glancing idly at the surroundings, flare in hand. A bunch of cafeteria tables are organized neatly throughout the room, there’s the kitchen for the cooks... it’s a standard prison mess hall, whatever that constitutes. It’s not like you have much to compare to!

“I dunno, dude, where am I?”

You nearly jump out of your skin as you hear her voice answer you, head swiveling about as you try to locate where it came from. She’s not in the room with you - you even look over the kitchen counter just to see if she’s hidden herself behind there, but that’s a no go. You hear her laughter throughout the room, shortly followed by a slam as the door shuts behind you.

…well, this is certainly some trickery.

>”How would I know that, I can’t see you!”

You shake off her taunting and pull out the revolver you found on the stairwell, re-tightening the wires and hooking them up to a really thrown together mechanism. It’s certainly not your best work, but it’ll do in a pinch – you don't forget to slide an incendiary round inside the chamber. Apparently you’ve been quiet long enough, because Cinder starts speaking again.

“You should have seen your face!” She’s no doubt referring to her own usage of the trap that scared the shit out of you. “I don’t think I’ve seen you that freaked out before!”

“Yeah, yeah…” You finally speak, taking your shotgun off of it’s holster and making sure that it’s loaded. “Pretty piss poor map for me to test my loadout, huh?”

“Yeah, looks like it. Hey, we get to test your close quarters ability, at least!” Her voice is a little bit too gleeful at this, and you hear the cocking of her shotgun after she says it. Well, looks like you’re going to be in the middle of an encounter shortly – if only you knew where she was, as well as how she’s speaking to you.

>”So, where are you hiding? I’m not much of a monologue guy.”

You chuckle to yourself as you move around the room – you didn’t know Cinder could be so sneaky. From everything you’ve seen of her, she’s definitely the type to rush in and do the job as quickly as possible. The trap on the stairs, her hiding and taunting you…it wasn’t her style. She’s purposely switching things up in order to surprise you – you’ve seen her play before and know her methods, after all.

Wherever she is, she’s gone silent now – the air is oppressive in the room as you try to locate anything that could indicate her presence. Speakers? None. Cameras? None. She’s practically a ghost, which begs the question – how is she hiding from you? You distinctly feel as if she’s using your lack of game knowledge against you in order to teach you a hard lesson – you’d be upset about it, but you wouldn’t have it any other way.

Regardless of how her teaching methods are, this is starting to get to you. You turn around and move towards the revolver, intending to pick it up and disable the trap – she must have been outside of the room or something, so you’ll move onwards – and that’s when you see it far too late.

The glinting of a blade caused by the light of your flare, slicking through the air towards your neck.

You let out a strangled noise as you force yourself to the side, the blade slashing clean through your arm before you can fully get out of the way. The sparking sensation from the damage flashes up your entire arm, leaving you breathless as you scramble off of the ground just in time to avoid the crack of Cinder’s shotgun.

You throw yourself away from her as you see her body shimmer into existence, the dim light causing her shadow to be cast over you. Her face is confident as she stands still, observing you for a few seconds – then she drops into a crouch and reloads her gun, akin to a panther about to pounce on its prey.

“Camouflage, bitch.”

But yeah I think she'll try to make use some prototype weaponry maybe.

Also, food for thoughts :

Got a theory there, and I apologize for my mistakes. English is not my native language :
Auxilia uses caught cheaters and various brain slaves (deathrow inmates, poor people etc) to be able to emulate each textures and each feeling in the game perfectly. Auxilia also uses cheaters as forced monitoring for matches. What put me on this trail of nonsense is that the bot, a seemingly advanced algorithm and anticheat solution, throw us a glare with a glint of emotion. Bots shouldn’t do that, and Auxilia would.

Praise. Be. Auxilia.

[I return! Let’s get started – gonna be a bit short today because I need to eat and also sleep, but tomorrow we’ll be going full speed ahead as usual. Sorry for the wait!]

You don’t bother responding to her remark, instead choosing to hook your foot around one of the cafeteria’s chairs and send it sailing towards her head. You hope this distracts her well enough as you raise your shotgun, pulling the trigger and throwing yourself away from her as you do. Unfortunately, she uses your distraction tactic to her advantage as she uses the chair to sponge up the bullets, closing the distance between you and bringing her blade down.

Christ, she’s merciless!

You duck out of the blade’s path, bringing up your fist in an attempt to uppercut her. Instead of meeting her chin, she snaps her arm around and blocks you with one of her shotguns. She levels it at your head, but you jerk it out of the way just in time – the only thing that hurts is your ears as the gun goes off right next to them. It soon becomes a battle of fists and feet, and you both can’t seem to damage one another – it’s become like a fucking martial arts movie up in here! You almost wish this could have been in real life, if only to get your body into shape – this is certainly a hell of a workout!

It all comes to a head as you both aim a roundhouse kick at each other – you both swing wide at the exact same time, and you both jump away from each other immediately afterwards. You see her hands move as quick as a flash as she begins to reload one of her shotguns.

If you’re going to move, now’s the time to do it!

[Unfortunately not, my friend.]

You stick your hand into your bag with record speed, pulling out one of the square patches and hastily shoving it against your body. A gentle green light emanates from you, but you don’t have the time to appreciate it considering an entire chair is thrown your way, crashing off of your head and sending it cracking against the stone wall of the mess hall.

Hey, that rhymed! You’d feel a bit proud of yourself if your head wasn’t pulsating with a sparking sensation. Fuck, that’s uncomfortable!

>Player: Nova
>HP: 65/100 (+20 HP followed by -20 HP)

Cinder doesn’t wait for you to collect yourself, using the kitchen counter as a springboard as she catapults towards you, raising her sword above her head like some ninja assassin. You jerk your head to the left and hear the blade embed in the stone next to you, so you raise up your hand and jam your fingers into her eyes without much of a second thought. You hear her gasp, and you take that opportunity to wrap an arm around her waist and the other around her neck, promptly flipping your positions and sending her head cracking against the ground. You follow that with a quick punch into the side of her head, and she responds by shoving you off of her and into a table.

You didn’t expect to get into a full on fist fight in this match, that’s for certain! You see her get up with a grunt of exertion, and she rips her blade out of the ground with ease.

Welp, time to try and bait her as per your plan!

[I return! Fuck, that was a good meal. Time to get back in the saddle though.]

It takes you about a fraction of a second to consider what would be a good method to bait her. A scathing remark about her gameplay level? A witty retort about how long it took to get to this point in the match? A complete lie about how her skill doesn’t even come close to yours? There’s a plethora of options to choose from, but you settle for a time honored classic that everyone knows, and one that’s proved quite effective over the course of human history.

You stand stock still as you raise your arm, flipping her off with the cockiest grin you can manage.

It’s very obvious to see that the gesture puts a bit of a dent in her cool façade, if the gritting of her teeth and adjusting of her sword and gun are anything to go by. You don’t move a muscle, though – you don’t need to. All you need to do is hammer the point in a little!

“Cinder, I told you not to go easy on me. Are you going to get up off your ass?

You hear her growl as she drops into a sprinting position, darting towards you like a coiled spring is released. She raises her shotgun to your head, clearly intending to end it as quickly as possible – you can’t help but chuckle at this, because as soon as she pulls the trigger you move. You feel the heat of the bullets sear your back as you descend upon her, hitting her in the jaw with a right hook as you go to move around her. She tries to bring the blade down upon you, but she wasn’t expecting your speed – nor for you to plant both of your feet on her abdomen and shove her across the room with all of the strength in your body.

Nothing happens for a split second, but just as she goes sailing past the trap, you hear the crack of the revolver as the wires are tripped. Cinder lets out a surprised groan as she hits the ground, immediately scrambling to her feet in an attempt to get her bearings.

“Looks like I’m doing a bit better this time around, huh?”

You can’t resist the opportunity to make a quip.

>Leave the mess hall – you’d prefer a wider area to finish this battle in.

You don’t allow her much time, instead holstering your shotgun and drawing the revolver that you got from the woman named Viola. It’s quite a fancy looking gun – a smooth black grip with various gold etchings on it, as well as on the silver barrel. You haven’t paid any mind to what the cost might have been if you had bought it on your own, but either way you’re about to find out it’s full capacity. As she gets to her feet, you partake in a reference from a franchise long buried by the sands of time – you begin spinning your revolver’s cylinder an ostentatious amount of times, smirking at her as you begin to speak.

“Only four bullets in the chamber. I bet you thought you’d corner me here, huh?” You run a hand through your hair, being awfully dramatic despite the time sensitive nature of this action. This match is making you feel a bit good, you have to admit – it’s a lot different than the pressure of facing 0phelia, and that brings a certain type of levity to the table. Regardless, you finally allow the chamber to stop rotating as you point it at her, the cylinder clicking loudly as it settles into place.

“Your plan was invalidated even before execution, Cinder.”

You fire the revolver once, aiming squarely for her head – surely she must not have enough health to survive that, right? You certainly would have thought so, considering the fact that the incendiary round goes right through the middle of her forehead. To your utter surprise however, she springs up and fires the other shotgun at you – you’re forced to dodge to the side at the risk of being shot yourself, and when you get to your feet, you only catch the sight of her hair as she disappears through the mess hall door.

“She must have patches too, then.” You curse to yourself. You should have known better than that – why the fuck did you take the time to be dramatic!? You can’t bring yourself to be too mad at it though, this is just a friendly practice match – and also you got to quote Revolver Ocelot.

God, he’s so cool.

Instead of pursuing Cinder, you sigh and sit down at one of the tables still standing, taking out one of your patches and pressing it to your chest. Another green light comes over you and disappears as fast as it came – fucking hell, that was an intense skirmish.

>Player: Nova
>HP: 85/100 (+20 HP)

You begin systematically going over your weapons and reloading them – you used quite a bit of ammunition in the last few minutes, two revolver bullets and four shotgun shells. Counting the one you put into the revolver trap earlier, you only have three incendiary rounds left – those things have certainly proved useful, so you can get why you didn’t find more of them.

“Well, better get up and at it.” You say aloud, rising from the table and musing over your options. Now that she’s gone, you really don’t have much of an idea where she went – the playing field is just as mysterious as it had been before! Wonderful!

What do you do?

You gather your wits and head out into the hallway, once again picking up the flare off of the ground. Power still hasn’t been turned back on throughout the prison (and you doubt it ever will be), so you’ll either be sticking to the light of the flares or screwing on the flashlight to one of your guns. It’s definitely a hindrance and most certainly an annoyance, but you’ll deal with it – besides, that’s not the current issue.

You cast your gaze around as you try to find where Cinder could have gone – with all the doors in this hallway, it’s certainly a hell of a task. You’re about to go and open the door to the infirmary when you hear an odd noise – the sound of something small rhythmically tapping against metal. You scratch your chin in confusion whilst you try to trace it to it’s source – interestingly enough, it’s coming from the stairway through the large double doors at the end of the hallway. When you walk over to it, you can vaguely make out something falling down the stairs – when it gets close enough, you swipe it up and bring it close to take a look.

A used shotgun shell. Seconds later, it dematerializes into blue polygons. You crack a smile to yourself – looks like you found her, or at least the direction she went.

[Hope you’re enjoying so far, apologies for the wait this is a bit longer than usual!]

You take a long look up the foreboding stairs – they seem to stretch on endlessly, and the top is hardly in sight with the flare’s light. You run a hand through your hair and pull out your shotgun once more, beginning to move up the creaky metal steps with a whole lot of hesitation. You wouldn’t put it past her to have rigged it with yet another trap, especially since she’s on the defensive now. You must have wounded her pretty damn good for her to run in the first place – you know that she likes to finish things in one shot, and the fact that you prevented it makes you a little proud inside.

As you move up the stairs, your thoughts drift a bit away from the battle at hand. The very distant crashing of waves almost soothes your thoughts, making you think about the coming days rather than the current moment. It’s going to be an interesting experience being on a stage again. You’ve never been to that arena in your life – other than your arcade, you tend to keep yourself away from areas with a lot of people. You have no idea how big the room is, how the stage is set up – hell, you have no idea how the people will react to you. You’ve seen stories about fans who would throw trash at people they don’t like – you never experienced it yourself, as you never went back into public after the finals.

“Would serve me right, being the dirty cheater I am.” You mumble to yourself in the dark corridor, the creaking metal of the steps reminding you of the squealing spider mines 0phelia had used against you just days ago. The idea of going onto that stage and facing Rock in front of all those people, no matter how many there are…well, to be honest it makes you a little sick. Partially from fright, partially due to the revulsion of the whole situation in general.

What exactly would you even do about 0phelia at this point, anyways? You’re banking on the fact that she’s the one who analyzed the footage for Rock, and in turn that makes you think of something. What if she was the one who gave Rock your address directly? You know she leaked it online in general, but if you’re going on the fact that she looked over the footage, it could definitely be a possibility that she gave it to him – and if you agree to her deal, she’d make him go away.

You let out a sigh as you reach the top of the stairs, a battered metal door awaiting you. This game was supposed to be a bit of fun practice, and here you are bogging it up with your brooding.

Whatever, you’ll just focus on finding Cinder.

>Go through the door – you’ll go in with your shotgun prepared.

[Sorry for the wait, needed the bathroom.]

You press your ear to the door and close your eyes, the sounds of your thoughts and the distant waves quieting as you focus on whatever lies beyond the door. The only thing you can hear at first is the sound of your own virtual heartbeat, the noise hanging over your head as you try to find any sign of something abnormal on the other side.

Focus…focus…

The sound of a gentle rain pattering against a metal roof, almost unable to be heard due to how little is falling. You can hear the sound of branches scraping against a wall outside of the door, the sound of a bird tweeting, the sound of crickets – every bit of noise on the outside is something you can perceive at the moment. Whether it’s due to your silent introspection or due to pure talent, you don’t know – but you do catch something very odd as you listen even closer.

The muffled sound of footsteps somewhere on the outside. Distinctly humanlike, making no attempt to disguise themselves. After all, there seems to be two walls between you and them, so why would they?

Found you, Cinder. Game over.

You grasp the door’s handle and open it slowly, and thankfully there’s no creaking to be heard. Despite it’s wear and tear, this door seems pretty well maintained – all the better for you, really. You move into the room and look around briefly – it’s as dilapidated as the rest of the prison, but for once there’s actually fucking windows. They may bebroken, but you finally don’t need to use this flare anymore – it’s mid-afternoon on this map from the looks of it, and there’s certainly some interesting scenery.

A circle of trees are surrounding the clearing, thick enough that it nearly blocks out everything beyond – you can maybe see a few glimpses of the ocean, but nothing beyond mere glances. In front of you lies a fucking giant helipad right in the middle of the circle, and beyond that looks to be some sort of cottage. You look behind you at the metal hell you just escaped from – you make the astute observation that the prison must be entirely built underground, and that cottage is where the warden stayed.

You’re not sure that logistically makes sense, but it’s a fucking video game – plus you can see Cinder moving across the helipad, so you don’t want to waste anymore time.

You crouch down and finally remove the sniper rifle from it’s holster, the gun still feeling incredibly nice to hold. You move forward and hide yourself underneath one of the windows facing towards the clearing, raising the sniper rifle and bracing it against the windowsill. You look down the scope and get Cinder in your sights – how do you go about this?

No real complaints, you're weaving a story together in a way that makes engaging with different characters more than just appealing, but almost like it's a requirement to get a fuller picture. An enticing one at that, to the point where I feel like there's something seriously wrong if we don't reach out to Daliah or Fletcher, even just to catch up.
Just as a for instance, we might have been able to sharpen Nova's edge a bit more by training with Fletcher, or get a sick loadout/in-depth update on firearms mechanics from Daliah. Not that I mind Cinder, but she doesn't have the same breadth of personal knowledge about Nova's playstyle, yet.
So, I hope we get some chances to expand our friends list a little more in the future and really take advantage of Wolfgang's notoriety. The match with Rock is a good start, and I get the feeling challenge letters will start rolling in again before too long. Win, or especially lose.

In conclusion: All hail Auxilia.

[Good morning! Getting started a little early today.]

“Alright…” You murmur to yourself, trying to find the perfect position to take this shot. Cinder isn’t moving at an overly fast pace, so you feel that you can take a little time to line up the perfect shot without being hasty. If you’re going to try and end this, you can’t leave room for error, after all. Once you have her head in the crosshairs, you slowly press down on the trigger...

BANG!

The crack of the sniper rifle cuts through the patter of rain and the distant crashing of waves, the bullet soaring towards Cinder with ruthless intent. You couldn’t have made a better shot if you tried, honestly, it’s going right towards the mark! You watch with satisfaction as it closes in, and that’s when your hopes and dreams are utterly dashed.

Cinder turns around quickly, flicking her sword into the air and stopping the bullet dead in it’s tracks. It creates a myriad of sparks that cast light across the grove of trees, and before they’ve even dissipated she’s on the move. You see her rushing up to what you think is the warden’s cabin, and you grit your teeth in irritation.

What the fuck was that, Cinder!?

>Try and shoot once more – if she doesn’t have healing left, it’ll be a fatal shot. [This will require a VERY HIGH roll.]

What? Is this common where you live.

[I live in the middle of the woods in a very rural area, so I get a lot of wildlife.]

You try and line up for another shot whilst she moves at a significantly greater pace, and due to this the bullet doesn’t even come close to her – by the time you’ve pulled the trigger, she’s already inside the cabin. You grit your teeth and stand, throwing the rifle back in it’s holster as you run over to the building. There’s not much need for secrecy at the current moment considering that she knows you’re on her trail, so as you approach you take a good long look at the cabin.

It looks fairly nice considering the fact that you just came out of a derelict underground prison – it’s a two-story log cabin with decorative curtains, a balcony, and ornate windows. You walk up the stairs and onto the nice deck, and that’s when you begin contemplating your approach.

How do you go about this? It’s a fairly large cabin, and you don’t know whether or not there’s a basement level – Cinder could be anywhere in this house, and you can’t see her from any of the windows. Chances are she’s preparing an ambush, especially because you’ve given her ample time to by taking the shot.

You groan to yourself. What do you do?

You consider kicking the door in, or perhaps trying to sneak your way around to try and get the drop on her – but as you step back, you look up and notice the balcony once more. It looks sturdy enough, and it is a viable entrance plan…you back up to the steps of the deck and jump up, grabbing the railing and pulling yourself over shortly after. It’s quite a quaint little balcony – it’d be a house that you personally wouldn’t mind having if it weren’t outside of an underground prison, and if it weren’t on an island in the middle of the ocean.

You pull out your shotgun once again as you approach the balcony door, keeping it trained on the surrounding windows just in case Cinder attempts to full a fast one on you. You come up to it and reach out to take the knob, but you hear something interesting through the door – the loud creaking of floorboards being stepped on.

Fuck it, you’re not leaving shit to chance this time. You level the shotgun at the door and pull the trigger, the bullets shredding the wood as easily as a hot knife through butter. You almost think that you were being too paranoid, but you hear the sound of something falling from a great height and crashing against the floor.

Shit, looks like your reflexes haven’t failed you yet!

“Fifteen minutes remaining.” The robotic voice booms in your ear – looks like you might be able to end this faster than expected.

You don’t hesitate, practically kicking the fucking door in as you reload your shotgun. You look around briefly and notice another railing in front of you, along with signs that stuff had been knocked off of tables around it. You take one glance downwards and see Cinder get up, so with that in mind you jump off of the railing and sail directly down to her.

Her eyes widen as you rapidly approach her, and just as you’re about to pull the trigger on your shotgun, she reacts. She fishes one of her shotguns out of the holster and fucking whips it at your wrist, the thing colliding squarely and knocking it out of your hand. Not fazed by this fact, you take your knife out of it’s sheathe and go to plunge it into your head – unfortunately, she rolls out of the way and you plunge your blade into the wood of the cabin.

Damnit, you can’t believe this is about to be a glorified knife fight.

She bounds to her feet and pulls out her other shotgun, aiming it towards your head – you drop down to the floor entirely as you feel some of the spray graze the back of your neck. She drops the gun entirely and pulls out her sword, descending upon you as she does – the only thing that stops her from making contact is your knife barely catching the blade.

“Thought this was…training?” You ask, pushing back against her incredible brute strength.

“It is! You’re out of your loadout’s comfort zone!” She smiles down at you even with her furrowed brow, muscles tensing as she tries to get past your defense.

If you don’t get out of this, chances are you’re about to lose.

It takes remarkably little time for you to decide the correct course of action, maintaining a solid hold on your knife even while Cinder presses down on you with all of her might. You barely manage to get your hand into the bag without being skewered, and you almost stab yourself in the hand trying to get the item you’re searching for – thankfully your luck prevails, and you feel the coolness of the glass as your hand wraps around the syringe.

Just as you feel your defense start to give, you whip it out of the bag and drive it into the side of her neck. She looks down at your hand with wide eyes as you pull the plunger and see the translucent liquid go into her neck – and almost immediately, you feel the force against your blade lessen considerably. She manages to get off of you, holding her neck with one hand as she stares at you.

“The…fuck was that?” Her speech is heavily slurred. You can see her body starting to slow down, but her eyes remain bright and alert – looks like it slows down the virtual body functions and not mental processes.

“My ace in the hole.” You pull out your revolver and aim it at her head, and she tries her damndest to raise her sword to block it – unfortunately she can’t bring it up past her waist. It’s almost a little sad to see her strength sapped like this, but it is a game after all – you can’t bring yourself to feel too bad about it. “Even if you have raw skill that outmatches me, I still have tricks – even if I’m not sure what all of them do.”

She opens her mouth to respond, but you cut her off with the crack of your revolver. It lands cleanly between her eyes, and she stares at you with her mouth agape. Slowly, her body begins to stumble forward, sword falling from her grip as she attempts to reach out to you.

A second later she falls to the floor, as dead as a doornail.

>Match concluded.
>N0v4_C43s4r defeats DRAGON.

“Told you not to underestimate me, Cinder.”

As you spin the revolver one more time and blow on the barrel, the world slowly begins to fade to white as it had when you defeated 0phelia.

When the world comes back into view, you find yourself laying on your base’s couch as you did last time. You sit up and let out a groan as you look around the room, your wrist free from the band and the robotic girl standing in place once again by the matchmaking pillar. It’s eyes follow you as they always do, but you pay them no mind this time – you open your menu to review your match results.

>Victory!
>N0v4_C43s4r def. DRAGON
>Level Increase: N/A
>Funds Gained: N/A
>Materials Gained: N/A

You frown at that – why hadn’t you gotten anything from that fight? You shrug as a you hear a pinging noise come from your menu – upon pulling it up, you find a request from Cinder asking for her to enter your base. You give her permission, and a few moments later you see polygons begin to form in front of the matchmaking pedestal, and then Cinder is there, looking at you with a mild pout.

“That was so dirty.” Is the first thing she says to you, crossing her arms and walking over to sit on the couch.

“Not my fault that you need to git gud, casual.” You wave your hand at her, your eyes closing just in time to get cuffed behind the head by Cinder. You open an eye and see her leering down at you, so you raise your hands in surrender. “Just kidding, you played a great match.”

“Yeah, uh-huh.” She sits down next to you on the couch and begins going through her own menu, so you take the time to investigate the ping emitting from yours. It’s coming from a previously unseen are of the menu, which is in the form of a rectangle with a play button in the center. You tap on it, and a separate screen opens up in front of your eyes.

>001: N0v4_C43s4r vs. 0phelia
>002: N0v4_C43s4r vs. DRAGON

“They do this automatically, now? You used to need a plug-in for it.” You idly remark as you click on the latest match – apparently it only records from your perspective and not hers, which is understandable. The only way to see things from both sides is in official tourney bouts, or if the opponent is feeling nice enough to share.

“Yeah, it’s real neat. Hey, uh, I have some bad news.” Cinder says to you with a bit of trepidation, to which you respond by turning to face her.

“What’s up?”

“Gotta head home early unfortunately – parents are going out for their anniversary and they’re bringing over my little sister, so I have to watch her.”

Aw, that’s a shame.

“Should I just…practice on my own, then?” You ask curiously, scratching your head in confusion as she goes to stand up.

“That wouldn’t be a good idea, I think. Someone might hassle you in public games…we could always try to cram in some time tomorrow?”

“If the arena scene is still the way it used to be, I’ll be there all day – besides, the match with Rock is tomorrow.”

“Ah…I’m really sorry, man.”

“It’s all good, I’ll work something out.”

“Gimme a call if you need to chat, alright?”

“Gotcha.”

With nothing exchanged other than a look, she taps a few buttons and is gone. Well, looks like your plans for the day have walked out of the door.

Doesn’t mean you can’t make more of them, though!

A couple of our old teammates were interested in catching up. We could try reaching out.
>>
Wasn't one of the messages from that person that makes the best weapons?
>>
You recline on your couch as you begin to create a mental shortlist of people you could theoretically practice with in Cinder’s absence – however something occurs to you in that moment…you never really had a lot of friends in the game outside of your team? In fact, other than acquaintances with other teams in the league, your Warscape contact list was embarrassingly short. You let out a sigh as you pull up the user directory, typing in the names of your old teammates.

>orange
You have to stop typing in his name halfway through, you recall from his derelict profile that he doesn’t play the game anymore. You try to think back on him for old times’ sake, and you find that you can’t really remember a lot about him? He had orange hair and hardly ever spoke, and he had no reaction at all when you told the team you were departing. You won’t be able to talk to him.

>BU5TER
You put the possibility of practicing with him solely out of your mind due to how things went when you exited the team. You had spoken to them over dinner and told them you would be leaving due to the recent vandalism of the house, and Buster was furious. Not because of the vandalism, but because of the fact that you had the audacity to back off when the going got tough. When you moved your things out of the house, he hardly even spared you a glance.

>Drifter
Another case of a falling out between the two of you – similar to Buster, she was upset at your departure and not your actions. After dinner, she had visited your room and politely told you that if you left the team, to never contact her again. You don’t want to think about her anymore, actually, so you put her far away from your thoughts.

>Fletcher
And finally, your team captain. Unlike the others, he was the only one who was understanding of the choice – he also visited your room, and unlike Drifter’s scathing words, he sat next to you and comforted you about the decision. He said that if you ever wanted to get back into the field, that he was only a phone call away. You still have his physical phone number somewhere in a box, and you immediately remember the comment left on your profile by him.

>FROM: Fletcher
>Call me.

You gulp. You’re nervous about facing him again, but he might be the only choice here. You do remember someone named Dahlia commenting on your page as well, same with a guy named x-halcyon. You recognize both of these names – Dahlia made your new sniper rifle, and x-halcyon was a fairly affluent solo player who Buster knew well. You could always contact them, you suppose.

>Contact Fletcher, your old team captain.

>>3540286
But yeah, Dahlia reached out directly. Might be the same one, might not.

Even if we decide not to meet up right now, it might be good to send out a general form message just to let them know we're not ignoring them and had something come up that needs to be addressed ASAP.

Gonna go against the grain to say Halcyon just because I live for drama.

If we have the time, fire off some quick messages to Dahlia and Fletcher and ask to catch up once things cool down. Maybe mention Rock to Fletcher, and the sniper rifle to Dahlia.

The only reason I can see Fletcher calling us is to invite us to his new team, insult us, or to congratulate us. To be honest I'm not interested in joining forces with an old teammate, we should have closure and move on- not stick in the past.

Fletcher's gone solo since Genesis, so I'm not really sure he has a team in place. Although he might be looking to build one. Not really sure we're ready for that commitment just yet, but his insight into the way Nova used to play could be helpful.

You let out a long and slightly shaky sigh – if you were going to practice with anyone, it would need to be Fletcher. Being your old team captain, he knows your play style better than anyone else in the game – he spent long hours getting you up to speed on how 5v5 games work from a competitive standpoint, as well as working you over the coals so your skills didn’t wane.

He was a strict captain, but his methods were highly functional – and when it comes to Warscape, there’s no one you trust more. With that in mind, you pull up the user directory once more and navigate to his name – you removed him from your friends list once you left the scene, but for some reason you’re still able to send him a direct message without friending him. You open the window, and stare at it for a long time.

What…what do you even say to him? Hey boss, let’s practice? I’m only contacting you because I need your help? You feel your teeth grind in frustration as you glare holes into the menu, trying to develop the right words to say to the man you abandoned five years ago.

You see a green light pop up next to his name and nearly jump – looks like he’s online now. Interestingly enough, another button pops up beside his name.

>Invite to Base.

Well, that would certainly save some time and effort, but do you really want to invite him without so much as a word? Knowing him he’d come instantly, but…you feel like you should give him some form of warning.

You move your finger away from the button, deciding that a good old-fashioned message would do the trick. You don’t know if he’s practicing for solo tournaments, or if he’s just loitering about trying to get some stronger weapons – Fletcher’s a very peculiar person, and you recall him being very particular about what weapons he used even before they were customizable! Regardless of that, messaging him won’t hurt – so you mull over what exactly to say.

Eventually, you start typing.

>Hey. I’m looking to talk with you, if you have the time. Please respond as soon as possible. -Nova

Christ, that’s so formal! That’s not how someone speaks to an old friend! But you know that you won’t be able to make a better message than this with your brain running a mile a minute, so you exhale shakily and press the send button.

It isn’t long before you get a response.

>I’m free.

He’s always been a man of few words in both text and in person, but you let out a shaky sigh of relief. A part of you was expecting some sort of derogatory remark or scathing comment – you’re used to both of those. However it seems he’s down to talk, there’s just one thing…where do you meet him?

You’re about to invite him to your base, but you pause just before you do. You eye that robot hesitantly, standing up and walking over to it as you do. It stares back at you with dead eyes and an expressionless face, it’s arms fully at it’s side as it stands at attention. You reach up and rap on it’s forehead like you did before your match with 0phelia, and unlike before, it speaks.

“Do you derive amusement from such actions?” It’s tone is about as cold as it could be, disturbingly lacking anything remotely considered robotic – it sounds just like a human.

“No, just wanted to make sure you’re not spying on me. You always watch me.”

“I do not record any of your actions until I am locked around your wrist.” It brushes off your comment and ceases speaking. You shiver – that’s fucking freaky, dude. You walk away from it and pull up Fletcher’s message window once more.

You sigh and go to enter the marketplace, and as always the robotic woman grasps your wrist, turning to her silvery substance and becoming the anti-cheat bracelet. This thing feels like a weight on your mind, but you shake your head as you load into the market.

It doesn’t take very long for you to find a relatively cheap place – from what you gathered based on Cinder’s small amount of commentary, these restaurants solely exist as an aesthetic mean and a way for companies to have people try out their food. There’s apparently a whole process involved where the company not only needs to buy the building space, as well as needing to send copious amounts of the food to Auxilia Systems so they can code in the exact tastes. It’s apparently a very fruitful practice, so more power to them, you guess.

You take your seat in a booth that’s in a secluded corner, keeping your head down as you order two helpings of chicken wings – you weren’t just going to come here and not buy food. A lot of cheap places can be hella good, and you haven’t been out to an actual restaurant in five years.

God, you’re such a cooped-up virgin.

In any case, you hear the door to the restaurant open as a tall man steps through the threshold. He hasn’t changed a bit, you idly think to yourself. Same longish hair, same beige coat, same type of pants…Fletcher is a very particular man, and that extends to his in-game wardrobe as well. You can feel your heart stutter with nervousness and sweat slide down your neck – when you had started the day, you didn’t even imagine that you’d be meeting Fletcher again. And now that he’s here? Well, you’re more nervous than you’ve been in quite a while.

You push down all of the nervousness and insecurity into a tiny little ball, and you raise your hand to catch his attention. He looks in your direction, and then upon noticing its you, he makes his way over with a remarkably faster pace than he had had when he entered the restaurant. He slides into the booth across from you and looks you directly in the eye. He also had done what you did in making his Warscape account reflect his actual features, so it’s like looking the real person in the eye.

“Wolfgang.” His voice is low as he addresses you, hands folded politely on the table as he stares you down. Fuck, why did he have to be so intimidating? It’s always been this way, and now it’s even more so since you haven’t been around him in five years!

“…Aidan.” You respond meekly, looking at anywhere but him.

“I’m glad to see you are well.” The waiter returns with the virtual chicken, depositing buckets in front of the both of you. Fletcher idly picks one out and begins eating it, heaving a low sigh of contentment. Another reason you chose a chicken place – Fletcher fuckin’ loves KFC.

“Y-Yeah, uh…same to you.” You begin eating as well, doing anything to distract you from the man sitting across from you. Fuck, this tastes exactly like KFC – how the hell were they able to code all of this into the game!?

“I’ve heard you’ve been through some troubling times recently.” He continues. “Your address was leaked online, your arcade was trashed, and now you’re in what seems to be an arena event. I assume none of this is coincidental?”

You flinch – Fletcher’s just as astute as he’s always been.

Ask him about that match against Rock's team.. wondering if something else was going on.

“Two words. Fuck 0phelia.” You say to him, tearing into your chicken with a little bit more vigor. God, just speaking her screenname out loud fills you with a potent form of gamer rage. The amazing flavor of KFC does little to quiet your anger, and you see Fletcher raise his eyebrow at you.

“…0phelia, you say.”

“Yeah. Do you know her?” It’s surprising how fast your nervousness fades when you bring her up – you don’t think you’ve genuinely hated a person before her, and after all she’s done she damn well deserves it. She’s the whole reason you’re going to be performing publicly tomorrow, after all!

“I do. She came to me a few months back asking to start a team.”

…wait, what?

“I declined, obviously. I have no wish to be on the team circuit unless Genesys is by my side.” He continues, setting aside a chicken bone as he begins to start in on another. “She kept asking if I knew where you were after I turned her down, and she was rather rude to me when I insisted that I didn’t know.”

That’s certainly a revelation to you. What the FUCK? So, she started with Fletcher in order to find you, and then she resorted to less than legal ways after the fact. You feel hot rage pulse behind your eyes, your fists clenching hard.

She keeps finding new ways to piss you off.

>Ask Fletcher to practice like you originally intended – 0phelia doesn’t matter right now.
>Inquire about 0phelia – you want to know everything about her that you can get out of him.

Why would 0phella care so much about us, and go through all that trouble?

Why does she hate the top team so much, was there a falling out?

(Then again, we only actually noticed gaming news like, 3 days ago. We don’t know anything about her career wise)

“If you don’t mind my asking…what do you know about her?” You can’t help but ask him this, considering he was formerly one of the closest people to you. The fact that she went to him to find you makes your blood boil, but you need to know everything about her that you can gather.

“I don’t know as much as you think I do. She’s a streamer of moderate renown who apparently has high hopes – she came to me to ask to build a team as I am a successful solo player, and I turned her down. Once I did, she wouldn’t stop asking me about you – after I kept denying her, she was rude and eventually stopped talking to me.” He shrugs his shoulders, not looking all too bothered by that. “It’s no skin off my back.”

“Do you know why she wants to form a team? Why she wants me on it?”

“From what I can gather, she simply wants to be the best player in the league, and the team circuit is what she views as the avenue to get there. Why she wants you in particular…well, I would have to assume it’s because of your playing skills. People like you don’t come around very often. The only person I can think of with natural playing ability like that is Orange, but I haven’t heard from him in a very long time. What she doesn’t seem to know is that playing ability doesn’t equal experience.”

You have to bite your tongue in order to not spill any sensitive details – you’d resolved not to tell him what he doesn’t need to know, but you really want to go on a fucking angry tirade right about now.

>Ask him why he left the comment on your profile.

It seems pretty obvious why he left us that message. Our last interaction with him was him telling him to call if we ever got back in the game.

I'm pretty sure Fletcher wants to get the band back together, and I'd like to avoid getting roped into an 'if I beat you, you're in my team' situation.

You two sit in silence for a while as you eat, and then you speak up – you had called him here for a reason, and you still intend to try and get him to practice with you regardless of the revelations that had just happened.

“Fletcher, the reason why I called you was…I’d like you to practice with me. Just like the old times. I hardly know a thing about this game now, and I have that fight with Rock…my practice partner has real life obligations, and you’re the only one I felt I could turn to. You know my playstyle better than literally anyone. Please, Aidan.” You find yourself using his real name out of familiarity, not desperation. “I need you to help me with this.”

Fletcher leans back in the booth and regards you, his warm brown eyes the same as they’ve always been. He finishes picking some meat off of one of the wings, and idly flicks the bone onto the table. As it dematerializes, he speaks with an assured voice.

“You’re aware that we will be doing this for the rest of the day, yes?” He asks you, and you nod with a bit of hope rising in your stomach. “There will be no breaks, I will not go easy on you, and we will not dawdle.”

“Yes. Just like old times, right?” You find yourself smiling a bit, remembering that he used the exact same line the first day you joined the team. Normally such memories would weigh heavily in your mind, but in this moment it’s a beacon that breaks through some of your anxiety.

“Exactly. Shall we get to it, then? There’s not too much time left in the day, and we both know how long arena preparations can take.”

“Yeah.”

You both rise from the table at the same time, withdrawing some credits and leaving it on the table for the waiter. As you both move out into the street and begin the process of creating a lobby, you can’t help but feel nostalgic. Fletcher training you from the ground up for hours on end, getting chicken either before or after the sessions…you feel a rare surge of confidence as you load into his game.

Just like old times indeed.

[And here’s where I’m archiving the thread – it’s getting a little long, and this is a good place to head it off! I’m going to be taking a break until tomorrow, where I will be previewing the FIRST EDITION OF THE ACTUAL GUN x GLORY LOGO. I sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed reading so far, and I’ll be hanging around the thread if you want to ask me anything or give your thoughts and feedback – all of it is valuable for me improving the quest overall! Thank you so much for reading my quest, and have a great night anons.]

So... how detailed can we get with weapon customization? I kinda like adult legos.

I was really excited to introduce him properly purely because of this - he's a very interesting dude.

He seems like fun. I am curious if he's on board the 'use Nova' train because I'm getting conflicting reads. I suppose we'll get a clearer vision as time goes on.
Curious to see how things go down with Rock legally as well.

For some reason the first thing that came to mind is a gun that has a rotating barrel to change optic magnification rather than just the scope being what you adjust. I spend to much time thinking of intentionally bad ideas.
