Welcome to A Song of Revenge and Gold: House Malroy Quest. In which you take the reins of a House of storied glorious past since Aegon’s Conquering, but whose fortunes have taken a turn for the worse in the doom that Robert’s Rebellion brought. You are Brynden Malroy, second son to Lord Vamos Malroy and Lady Esemella Hayford and the last living heir to Steadhold and House Malroy. The year is 285AC, two years after the Rebellion and a year after your return to Westeros.

House Malroy is a pre-genned House designed around the idea of a story within the Crownlands of a House fiercely loyal to the Targaryens and their attempts to live in this new world after Robert’s Rebellion. Lord Brynden Malroy is as well pre-genned but will take direction from the players in his ways and how he develops himself further. This Quest will be moderately more story driven than others of its kind, but the development of the House and her lands will take just as much importance.

If you’ve played one of the many Quests within the ASoIaF setting the rules of the SIFRP system should be known. I will be using the Game of Thrones edition, as well as a few of the expansions namely OOSP and a few house rules which will be explained as we come to them. If you have questions about how things work or why certain actions are taken I can explain them as we go along. In truth this is a learning experience for me as well.

Allowing the shortest of sighs to escape you look up at the assembled war council, all eyes remain upon you. Ser Tygon Reynold’s look remains stone faced and icy, the insults to his honor having run deep. Ser Jaime Lannister still looks stir-crazy, ready to go and tired of the petty games. Your mind remains in turmoil. Could the Westermen be trusted with this plan? Lord Dresden Drox was already well known to be a traitor, his son no better. What of the rest? You’d hardly had time to gain measure of the men. Ser Lucas Longwaters’ spat with the younger Reynold brother had made for a further poor impression on all sides. Your lips begin to move as your eyes do over the map. The plan had merit, it was a safe plan, one more of stratagem over wine but it was sound. You further disliked the idea of allowing the trebuchet to reach Steadhold at all, this plan of Ser Reynold’s counted a lot on all of the other pieces falling soundly into place. What if something went awry? If your cavalry were unable to return in time. If Dontos and his host were defeated in the field, or worst yet beaten to Blacksaithe? They’d build, as Reynold allowed them to in his plan, and they’d likely take your poor walls to the breaking point. The northern face was already rebuilt, but the stone was fresh and new, and without the rest of the structural integrity would just as like falter to a trebuchet’s onslaught, not to mention the catapults. Everything would need to go perfectly to plan. And no good plan ever survived the enemy.

The matters of field command and tactics were your domain, using your years in Essos and outwitting the enemy with asymmetrical and foreign tactics. Your mind falls upon the idea of a strike team, get in, get out, only attack the trebuchet and rendered it unusable. The Sons of Gold would excel, but you’d need someone else to help as well. The Qorgyle Light Cavalry would be fast enough, though would falter in the eyes of a rallied response. And you need to go about the Langward outriders and scouts or risk a full on defense when you arrive. You wished the Prince’s Resistance hadn’t faltered and that Fairbanks was more than just a man with some false claim that Mason had stricken down. It would be risky to attack the Langward host so well defended and one you had so little information on. Perhaps too risky even. And your people needed you in the southern Violet Plains at well. You’d be taking away resources from the army meant to deal with the bandits there. And you’d have little face value leading a small strikeforce in the north. Optics were everything after all. If you were in the south at least your people would see you in the flesh dealing with people burning their homes and crops directly. Again your lips go to move, thoughts collecting and attempting to form words but Lady Alexes Chelsted instead is the first to speak.

“Ser Tygon, Lord Malroy. If I may settle this dispute, so we can move forward? Your people are in danger Lord Malroy, my home, ill defended as it is, as well. Surely you can see the merits of Ser Tygon’s plan? No? The men of the Westerlands have come to aid us Lord Malroy, I see little reason for bickering. Lord Dresden Drox is dead, he is the man responsible for your brother and father’s deaths. Let us move forward, hm?” she asks, looking between the two of you with a cutting look. Dontos backs down slightly, looking to his wife with a quick glance and then back to the table with forward facing eyes.

Ser Tygon for his part drops his icy demeanor and inclines his head with a quick apology, “Thank you Ser Tygon. I do hope you do not take great offense to Lord Malroy’s sharp tongue. I will admit to finding it a touch abrasive myself at times. But it is no cause to respond in kind, you are a better man than that, your honour, Seven preserve us, is not wounded by the actions of a lesser cousin. Understood?”

“Lord Malroy do you have anything to add?” she finishes, giving the table to you openly, “Or would we be better to see to it that the work is done?”

You clear your throat, Lady Alexes was a fearsome woman to be certain, and the table’s tensions eased with her chides and simple insults mixed with compliments. Looking at the table you flip the map of your home around and begin to place markers upon the God’s Eye River Road and your northern outer wall.

“Lord Plumm would your men be able to raise siege and perhaps dig a dry moat before the arrival of the Langward’s northern host?”

He scratches at his salt and pepper goatee for a moment, “Aye my Lord, I believe they could. With the aid of some of your day labourers to be certain. What manner of siege do you fancy my Lord?”

“Scorptions, and a spitfire,” you respond simply, “Have them hidden until the northern host has arrived and begun to dig in,” you mark a few spots on the map, “Place markers here, here, and here. The latter is my furthest arrow, I do believe Captain Mors or Curtis Flowers could make that mark as well. Beyond are the scorpions. And here, the effective range of the rest of the men, crossbows, and the spitfires I believe. When they go to march towards my walls, I intend to make them bleed every step of the way.”

Old Lord Plumm hmms and mumbles to himself for a moment before nodding, “It will be done my Lord. I will see if we cannot build some pitfalls and other such things prior to their outriders and scouts arrival.”

“How much do we know of the host to the northwest, Lord Plumm?” Dontos asks after a moment.

“Not much more than I could tell you originally, Ser,” he responds with a furrowed brow, “My scouts were unable to obtain numbers, though did seem to think there were a number of bows, footmen, and non-dedicated cavalry amongst their numbers. Likely the largest of the hosts. Again my apologies Lady Chelsted for such ill news.”

Dontos shifts his jaw, his face wearing a look of anger before turning to you, “Nephew I’d request some of your footmen to aid myself and Ser Quentin in meeting this host in the field. I know you can spare little bit House Chelsted has been a fast and good ally, her home is as important as our own. And I believe with a larger host at my back we could deal with these bandits faster and be home sooner.”

You nod slightly, though you liked less the idea of giving good men away from your defense your uncle had mentioned how important it was to maintain a good relationship with Lady Alexes. Matters of defense and war were certainly amongst this topic. No doubt Ser Tygon’s insistence that the best of the footed men beneath Ser Quenten Banefort aid them as well was of a similar mindset. You were unsure as to why the Reynold and her had gotten along so well in such short time but all the same it would do you better in the long run to aid perhaps your best ally now, you respond in kind, “The Malroy Second Regiment and the Longwaters veteran Infantry can be spared, uncle. Your home is no less important than my own, Lady Alexes.”

“The concern is appreciated Lord Malroy,” she replies curtly, “My husband will deal with these brigards in the field. But I find that I am left little choice than to remain here with my so for the duration.”

“And you are welcomed here, my Lady,” you say without much more thought.

“My Lady if I may,” Ser Tygon says quickly, “Allow me to offer you my own sworn sword, Ser Lorcan Lydden, so that you can the young Lord may feel safer in these dangerous days.”

Lady Chelsted inclines her head to Ser Tygon, hands folded upon her lap, “Thank you Ser Tygon, it would do my son well to be about such a man. Though I do warn he is an inquisitive boy once he warms.”

“I am certain Ser Lorcan will be able my Lady,” Ser Tygon responds with a soft chuckle and his face less cold and stoney than before, strange how Lady Alexes was able to so easily disarm him. You turn your eyes back to the map again and sigh, “Ser Mason. As my castellan and bannerman I would place you in charge of Steadhold’s defense.”

Ser Jaime interrupts, “Lord Malroy I do believe that the best execution of my cousin’s plan would be found under his command. Would you disagree? I would sooner place him in charge of the defense.”

You feel your teeth begin to grind again but Mason places a hand upon your chest, his full plate clinking against your chest, “I will happily share command Ser Tygon, at my Lord’s leave.”

Breathing slightly to calm your wildfire you nod, “At your discretion Ser Mason.”

Mason inclines his head towards Ser Tygon and for a brief moment shares some degree of respect for the man. Mason always was the more level headed of the two of you and being a Reacher more empathetic to the plight of a man whose honour had been wounded. Perhaps it for the best he remained here. A moment longer is decided as to the rest of the troop deployments, Ser Jaime eager to take up command of the southern force of cavalry riding out to deal with that host. Lucas would be joining him him with your personal knights and Ser Tygon volunteers his young brother and their Loyal Reigns as well. At the end of it, not including your own Sons of Gold, the host of cavalrymen that would ride out was over two hundred good men, a larger host than you could have ever hoped to field two years ago, akin to the glory days of your House.

“Lord Malroy,” Ser Jaime asks as the final plans are being set, “Where do you intend to place yourself?”

Your brow furrows and your mind returns to the debate you had earlier with yourself. To lead a strike team to harry the northern host and ultimately disable the trebuchet or to ride out with Ser Jaime to the south and save your people. Some would call the actions of the former that of a sellsword, a risky maneuver with a large payoff, the actions of a man with little regard for his own glory. And that of the latter as that of the true Lord and commander upon the field of war, the safer play with better optics for both your people and that of the Crownlands.

Where does Brynden wish to deploy?

>With a small strike team to harry the northern host and ultimately disable the trebuchet before it reaches Steadhold.
>With the cavalry host to the south with Ser Jaime to destroy the southern host in grand fashion.

Picture related is the current deployment of the troops. I don’t believe there are any qualms with this?

With us commanding the cavalry with Warfare 5, there should be little difficulty in smashing the faster moving southern host, allowing us to return all the faster. Otherwise there isnt an experienced enough commander amongst the cavalry

They're the Elite Horse Archers on the Blitz of the Violet Plains. Brynden usually deploys them with himself.

Anyway, looks like we're going with Ser Jaime. Writing.

Just a little warning. Huge thunderstorm just rolled in my area and it seems 4chan is being spotty today as well. So hopefully things won't go wrong.

“With yourself Ser Jaime,” you respond after a quick moment, as little as it gave you comfort knowing that the northern host would be left unharried and at full strength when they arrived at Steadhold. But at the same time, the needs of your people, who had already seen so much war and famine and had been close to rioting just months prior, they needed to see their Lord in action. Laying waste to bandits and those that would cause them harm in grand fashion at the head of a host of cavalry to rival the days of Lord Bravil Malroy.

He clicks his tongue and gives you a fair nod, “Then it is settled,” he says simply, turning on his heel and waving for his squire to follow, “We ride upon the hour Lord Malroy. I assume the rest of you know your orders.”

And just like that the War Council breaks up, each man leaving off with hurried step. You share a brief look with Ser Tygon as he again offers his arm to Lady Alexes and the two of them walk out. A Knight in full plate not far behind them. The look you share is hardly more than one of a passing respect, still tinged with disdain and besmirched honour. You shake the thought from your head and turn to your uncle and Mason who are sharing a brief conversation before Dontos offers his hand and Mason takes it. A sign of respect between the two men, who queer it was to think even a year ago Dontos detested your friend for his name. And now the two of them shared such a respect for one another. Your uncle approaches you after and you embrace, with a brief conversation before he leaves off. Mason comes to you last, his hair still matted to his head with sweat but his face strong and ready.

“I promised Lady Obella I would not leave your side again upon your return,” he says with a smile. Amazing how he had kept all of those perfect teeth all of these years. He continues, “Suppose she already knows.”

“If I know my wife half as well as I think I do, it is likely she knew before you ever promised such a thing,” you say with a laugh the two of you emerging into the yard where the three hosts of the Crownlands, Westerlands, and Dorne began to assemble and deploy. Dontos is already upon Penance. Barking orders and rallying his men. Ser Haldan Rambton and Captain Jon ‘Painter’ have joined with him already.

Mason sighs deeply, shifting his weight and allowing his crimson cloak to fall from his shoulder and catch the wind, “I’m not sure what I’ll do when this is done Brynden. I am not a man for peace and idle Lording.”

You give him a short look, before the thought reaches your own mind, for two years since your return all you have done is war and try to save your House. Years before that it was war from Braavos to Volantis. Perhaps it was your nature to fight, to war. But perhaps that was the sellsword talking. Just as likely Mason struggled with the sellsword playing at Lord moniker that had haunted you since your return. The two of you would become true Lords together you think to yourself, when this was done and you could focus all of your efforts on Steadhold. You place a hand on Mason’s shoulder and the two of you share a final look, both with the thought still upon your mind before you leave off. Off to war.

Day 9, Month IX - 285AC ~ Mid-Evening

You had ridden hard and fast with the grand host of cavalry. You had made good time, perhaps better than expected. The Qorgyle outriders had scouted ahead and Ser Yandry Santagar had reported that you were less than half a day away from meeting the southern host. When you had made camp for the first time in nearly eighteen hours the majority of your men were quick to sleep for the coming day or getting what little food they could manage. You had been greeted by a small village of farmers that day, some unnamed squat upon the Violet Plains, grateful to see their Lord. They had been accommodating and you sat in the Reeve’s home with a bit of slightly stale bread and a cup of brown ale with your Captains and Ser Jaime and his own. The time prior to this when you had made camp the split was very distinct. Obviously your men camped together, the Qorgyle Dornish men quick to join with them. And then the Lannister camp was a fair distance off, with the Reynold men sort of sitting off to the side, closer to the Chelsted camp than your own. You had thought it queer before Lucas had mentioned to you that their was little love lost between House Lannister and Reynold and you decided it best to leave it alone. The tension in the camps had become rather palpable, made no better by Ser Jaime’s seeming lack of care for it. Traveling the camps with little regard to whom’s toes he stepped upon.

It was today when he called upon you to plan for meeting the enemy that he crossed into your own camp, earning him several looks from your men. You had already come upon your own plan. Though you likely had the better of it when it came to experienced veterans, you were still down two men to one if the reports had been true, and they had their own cavalry to meet you in the field. A night attack upon their camp, likely made easier by their dulled senses from reaving and raping and drinking would give you the best chance to make quick work of them, at least in your mind. You could break camp and be down upon their own in less than four hours. At least in your mind you think looking at the rough map of the area Ser Yandry’s men had put together.

Attending you were your Captains; Ser Lucas Longwaters, Solhas Za Tarbeck, ‘Dusky’ Danse, Ser Nathan Norridge, those of the Qorgyles; Ser Yandry Santagar, Ryon ‘of the Scourge’, Timeon Sand, and Ser Aller Tyde, and the only cavalry that House Chelsted had to call upon lead by the young Ser Jaromir Chelsted, the eldest son of the recently deceased Ser Raymun Chelsted and a Knight newly made. The two of you had ridden together for a time on the journey down, speaking of his father and the man he was. At one point when telling him of the Trial you can tell he tries to hold back his tears but eventually relents to them and you share in his pain telling him of how you watched your cousin die in your arms. Truly war was not a thing of fairness. Attending Ser Jaime is the Captain of the Lannister Cavalry, though you are told he is more loyal to the King than to the West, and Ser Tyrus Reynold.

“I will not hear,” Ser Jaime says after listening to your plan, “Do you not understand the importance of your people seeing you deal with these bandits in open combat Lord Malroy?”

Your brow furrows and you cross your arms, “And what of your plan then Ser Jaime?”

“We meet them in the field of course,” he says, garnering some small amount of support from both sides, “Lord Malroy how many Knights do you have in your employ?”

“Twenty odd,” you respond shortly, ill liking being reminded of your limitations.

“I have quite a few of my own, between the Loyal Reins, the Crown’s men, and otherwise. Now tell me Lord Malroy, as a Knight newly made, do you understand the glory of the charge?”

Your face flattens and you try not to roll your eyes.

“Every Knight with any sense of honour or duty to Seven exonorates the glory of the charge. The people love it my Lord, Hells the singers write songs of it and the nobility make games of it. How many times have your men been a part of night raids? Like common sellswords or ironborn reavers stealing into camps and castles under the cloak of darkness?”

You had begun to regret telling Ser Jaime of your exploits in the Invasion of the Princewood. And wave a hand in some vague amount of numbers.

“Precisely Lord Malroy,” Ser Jaime continues, the smug look of satasification upon his face, “Not only do you deny the Knights within your charge their moments of glory, you defile their honour by ordering them to act as little more than sellswords within a company commanded by a Second Son. Surely they are loyal men, good and true, but your people never have seen it, for your men have come and gone before the sun has risen, only burnt bodies and strung up fools to remind them of the wrathful Lord Malroy. Not to mention, do you honestly think that every one of your enemies would be so stupid to be unguarded at night when you are known to attack camps with daring raids? How much longer could that possibly go on for?” he asks before shifting, placing a finger on the map before you and continuing with a strong tone, We meet them in the field Lord Malroy, I do not care to offer them terms of parley, we may ride them down as you would otherwise. But allow your men the honour and glory of the charge. Allow your people to see you for the Lord that you are.”

You fix him with a strange look, if you were half as wise you would think he speaks of himself. Turning slightly you see your Knights with looks of discomfort upon their faces. Lucas chiefly among them, he clears his throat and looks away. Ser Jaime spoke some truth it would seem, even if Lucas did not want to admit it to you so boldly he too would prefer Ser Jaime’s plan, no doubt that Ser Nathan would as well, and just as like the young Ser Jaromir. Solhas, Danse, and the Qorgyles likely cared less, but the Knights among the Qorgyle men would perhaps be more easily swayed to such stories, they were of the temperance being from Dorne. And maybe it was true that your people would care more, or be better put at ease to see you meet them in the field during daylight and ride the bandits down. Was their glory in that? Or the foolishness of the Westerosi? Your mind churned slightly as you thought upon it, would it be worth arguing with Ser Jaime over the thing, to change his mind or would it be easier to relent?

Battle Plans:
>Brynden’s Plan: Attack the southern host at night while they camped, preying on a lowarded guard from the days of pillaging, raping, and drinking

>>Brynden’s Plan: Attack the southern host at night while they camped, preying on a lowarded guard from the days of pillaging, raping, and drinking

Lord Jaime, If this were the army attacking Steadhold? I'd agree. But we're on a time limit, the fast we kill these blackguards the faster we can return to the walls and give a proper charge. These are not men worth a glorious effort they are disorganized, looting pillaging rapists more in like with Dothraki than honorable men of Westeros. They do not expect us because they do not know of Drox's treachery was revealed and their commander is not here, because if he was his men would be better organized. Furthermore any people here are either dead, in chains or traitor, because my people already ran to steadhold for safety. A traitor would spread false rumors about us anyways assuming we missed collecting their heads, the dead tell no tails, and the people in chains won't particularly care if we came in the night as long as we freed them and I upheld my lordly duty. If none of these reasons sway you, than can I at least implore you for us to attack at first light with the Dawn at our backs? It'll still catch them early and hopefully unawares, blind them and be both properly knightly as well as a striking visual.
>>
Sorry if I'm a bit slow today. Just not writing too quickly today.

It seems compromise and Brynden's plan seems to be the more popular of the two. Leaning more towards compromise, even just slightly? You'd have to roll a Persuasion(Convince) test to get Jaime on board for either. But the former would be harder.

On compromising. Yeah attack at dawn isn't the same as meeting in the field, but its a bit better than the typical night raid that Jaime wants to avoid. The Knights would get some glory, but not the same as meeting in the field. But Sleepy is right, the importance of the charge in Steadhold is likely more prestigious than this one and you are on a time crunch. It's a middle ground.

Either way, do we want to compromise? Or should I hold a vote between compromise and Brynden's plan?
>>

I'd be fine with the compromise.

I'd rather just compromise. I get what jaime's saying but time crunch is true
>>
>>3586047
I wouldn't phrase it like that, mostly because it tips off too much of your hand about Royce's activities, and because he has nothing to do with this so believing that your smallfolk are chained up might come off as weird.

But I'd suppose so? It's really splitting the hair on that one and I'd make you roll for the harder test and if that failed it would make the compromise test harder because Jaime is fed up with the argument.

Either way, just compromising seems to be the straight up most popular option. Attack at dawn with the sun at your back is pretty glorious. So I'll need you to roll:

>Success, One Degree

Pinching the bridge of your nose you turn back to Ser Jaime, you didn’t have the time for this. Meeting someone in the field would take too long, and these honourless wastrels would hardly be worth the time. But he did not seem willing to budge on the night raid, the full stop no and then appealing to your own men was an underhanded tactic but no less than you expected from the man. You narrow your eyes at him as he idly plays with his knife waiting for your response.

“I have not the time for it Ser Jaime,” you start slowly, “The northern host bears down upon Steadhold more and more each day, and you wish for me to spend a day wasted on meeting these bandits in the field? For some charge hardly a soul will remember?”

He clicks his tongue and looks at you. Annoyance upon his face.

“The charge that is set to relieve Steadhold of her besigers will be one to tell story of, there is glory in that. But not if we arrive too late. I see your point Ser Jaime, and it is noted. Perhaps an over reliance on the night raid is ill thought. But can we not instead compromise?”

“How so Lord Malroy?” he asks with a feigned ignorance.

“We attack at dawn. Split the command between the two of us, one to the south, the other to the east. Loop around their camp and come in due east and south. With the sun at our backs we will strike the glorious image you so desire and blind them while we run them through with our split forces. The people, what little of them are left, will see in the early morning light. And we will not waste time here when their is more glory to be had at Steadhold.”

Ser Jaime taps the blade of his knife for a moment, the thought was not deep, but rather it seemed playful. He was still a man in his youth. Filled with bravado and the stories of what a honourable and glorious Knight should be and how he needed to create legend for himself beyond the moniker of Kingslayer. He hmphs as he sits up and looks at you, pointing the knife lazily before casting a look about the room, “At dawn then. We ride within the hour,” and with that he stands and leaves off, followed by a few of the men and an annoyed looking Tyrus not soon after.

You slump back into your chair, the high games of the Crown had begun to wear on you. Could it not be so simple as to make your commands and they be done. But perhaps a point had been made all the same. Lucas leaves off with little word, followed by Ser Nathan. You promise them silently they’d recieve their glorious charge soon enough. But for now you needed this to be done.

Day 10, Month IX - 285AC ~ Just before Dawn

She was fast. Faster than any horse you had ever ridden before. Her steps nimble and graceful, hardly a touch needed on your end to direct her and though she had the temperment of her father, it was in the way a woman does, not the raw anger of Goldsong. How fitting a name she had for the first time the two of you rode to war, Lady Dawn. Perhaps she knew the smirk upon your face at the thought as she pushes forward, keeping pacing with the Qorgyle light cavalry that acted as your outriders and guides and their sand steeds. Behind you rode your Sons of Gold, Lucas’ Knights, and the rest of the Malroy and Qorgyle Heavy cavalry under your command. Your fingers flex as you grip your bow and the reins at the same time, eyes ever vigilant. In truth you had hardly slept yourself, getting a few hours upon Lady Dawn before awaking and presses onwards at full tilt when Ryon ‘of the Scourge’ reported the had found their camp. And those hours of sleep were restless and filled with shadows and words beyond where you were now. But now your ears rang with the sound of a thousand hooves galloping across the Violet Plains. The sun warmed the back of your neck as it began to crest and in the distance to the south you could see Ser Jaime’s command following after him.

You whistle, bringing your host into structure. The Light Cavalry taper off, to the sides as the Knights come to the forefront of a wedge winged by two companies of heavy cavalry on either side. You fall in behind Lucas, your Sons of Gold following behind, bows at the ready.

There was little doubt in your mind the sheer size of your host had given itself away, you can see the camp beginning to scramble, as the cresting light of dawn soon outpaces your horses and illuminates the camp in full. The night guard was full awake, ready and still armoured, your gut drops for a moment realizing what they held. Crossbows, nearly a hundred of them, forming a line against your charge. Though you smile and press further into Lady Dawn when the sunlight hits them, eyes squinted and their aim lost.

You raise an arm. And for a moment you feel the world quiet. The bows of the Sons are drawn, the throwing spears of the Qorgyle cavalry holstered and ready. You’re nearly standing in the saddle, your old sellswords brigandine rattling and warming in the morning light. You see them as you close. Their eyes, filled with terror, horror for what has come upon them. Had they been prepared? Perhaps, but it matter little with nearly two hundred horses screaming down your plains towards them. Your hand remains for a moment longer before you see the first man break, turning tail like the craven he was. And then you drop. Hand quick to the arrows upon your saddle, drawing two at the same time in a single fluid motion. You shoulder the weight and just as quickly as the rest of your men...

“LOOSE!”

Warfare:

Please roll 7d6 (5D+2B) for Warfare(Command)

So I've simmed the battle beforehand but left myself enough wiggle room for Brynden's actions and rolls to matter in it. Since Brynden has Warfare 5 he's going to give 5 commands. So I'll take the first 5 results of the above test to decide his results for his first five orders.

After that I'll call for another roll for Brynden's own Marksmanship.

The arrows and spears fly true. A volley of death that slams into the enemies before the lances of your mounted men do. You knock off two seperate crossbowman before they even manage a second to retaliate properly. The Sons of Gold are just as brutally efficient as ever, their arrows absolutely evesarating the crossbowmen before anyone else even makes contact. You watch several men die gruesome deaths, arrows stuck in their eyes, necks, chests and you know their first line is broken, what little remained either began to run or were stricken down by spears. Some of the opposing cavalry had attempted to get upon their horses but were cleanly picked off by the dornishmen. Your eyes blaze with wildefire as you look over the carnage, dropping back down and gripping the reins hard. Settling into your saddle you press yourself against Lady Dawn, knowing the split second you had between then and when Lucas’ charge made contact would be all the more time you’d have to brace.
>>
The men roar into what remains of the first line of defense. As you pass over you realize they had hidden spike traps and the crossbowmen were to pull them up for your cavalry to skewer themselves upon in their reckless charge. But without the men their to do it they had lost any chance for the surprise to be effective. Lucas is screaming ahead of you, his lance having broken not one but two men before itself had become useless and he tears his bastard sword from his scabbard and strikes down a third. On both sides of your cavalry line you see men falling, being ran through with ease. The casualties were great and they had offered little in retaliation thus far.

You watch a man emerge from his tent in full garb. The banner of the Bright Banners flies over it, so much for no colors being flown. He begins to scream and yell, rallying and reorganizing whomever he can. You pick at the thought for a moment. He looked familiar…

“CAPTAIN!” another man yells before being lanced down. The Essosi throws a handaxe at the Qorgyle man who had killed him knocking him clean from his horse and you remember.

Captain Illeo ‘of Volantis’ one of the three Captains of the Bright Banners. The right cunt had bad blood with the Second Sons after being kicked out and joined up with the Bright Banners not long after. You had already made his lieutenants talk and what they knew was great indeed. But this man. He had his name upon the contract. His lips spoke the agreement. He was your man who would tie this together. He’d know why Tychano Osten thought to meddle in your affairs. Who the Red Bastard was selling to. All the slave numbers. All the shipments. Everything. You needed him alive.

Your men have begun to round towards the south for a second pass just as the Lannister man begin to slam into the remains of the bandit army. Though when you cast a look back you watch several of your heavy cavalrymen and several of the Qorgyle man go down with spears in their backs from the enemies that had managed to organize. As you press forward your men run through a mass of five score man who had as of yet been untouched and they duck and weave and attempt to take down your Sons of Gold. Many are trampled for their effort and those that do manage hits are left upon their ground and scattered by the counters of your men. Barely nick about them. The moment you pass Ser Jaime and the Crown’s cavalry slam into them unawares. Ser Jaime skews one with his lance before crush another’s head in with his shield. The attack was brutal, and though it pained you to see your own horses amongst the Crown’s numbers, the repariations you family had paid nearly two years ago, it still brought a smile to your face when the mercenaries were left in ruin. Ser Jaime rounds about a squat man with two blades who swings at him wildly before being dispatched with a well placed kick and several lances on his prone body from the other cavalry.
>>
Again you watch as more of your horses, though not your riders streak past and crush the remains of the mercenary army. Ser Tyrus Reynold is screaming like a madman, standing in his saddle as they round for second pass and he smashes someone’s head in with a mace. Causing the man’s body to flip over itself and twist in odd angles. The Loyal Reins were deadly, you’d give them that, no doubt made more so by the use of your horses. Old stock Gawen had told you before you left, bought some years ago by a Ser Mervyn Reynold negotiated by, surprisingly, your youngest brother Pastorm. He knew each of the horses still by their pedigree and the brands left upon them, and not a one had been stolen or given to the Crown after the Sack of Steadhold, something that sat strangely with you. Perhaps Ser Tygon spoke true. They pass your cavalry line going for a third pass and you know those men are as good as dead.

Rounding you watch Ser Yandry Santagar break off slightly to run a few deserters through with his Heavy cavalry, harrying them with the light into a box before crushing them under hoove. The scene is a gruesome one you notice as you come up from the south again and realize it was nearly done. Ser Jaime and Ser Tyrus have round in the east and it seems both sides are watching as the remains of the footed mercenaries, not even the veterans among them, have begun to run on foot or whatever horses they can manage to grab. You see off into the distance their Captain with three men behind him, riding high in his saddle as he attempts to escape.

Not today you bloody bastard.

Result: Captain Illeo ‘of Volantis’ Defeated

You dig your spurs in to Lady Dawn and whistle sharply to allow your ranks to break. The Knights open and you allow her to go all out, flying by the remaining men like golden lightning. The Sons of Gold are close behind, but not so close as they used to be. This horse was special, not to say her father was not, but there was more here. Your connection to her had begun to grow and she knew your every movement, how to run when you would sit high. As you did now. To steady her gallop to an even pace when you would grip about her with your knees and go to draw your bow. As you did now. To slow, just a touch the moment the arrows left your hands, and catch your recoil in her gallop so you barely moved at all and bounced back into your saddle. As you did now. The two arrows find purchase in the napes of the men trying desperately to run away from you. To little avail. The one falls from his horse with a slump, his body rolling into a heap when it hits the ground, the other’s face plants firmly into the poor horse’s neck and the beast swerves off to the sound attempting to shake him free.

Again you press into Lady Dawn and as if her speed was endless she bursts into another full gallop, closing in on Captain Illeo with ease. The gap lessens with very stride, five paces, four, three… You holster your bow, gripping your bastard sword. Two… You tear it away arm raised. One. Your blade strikes true, finding purchase in the boiled leathers the captain wore, and cutting a bloody swarth across his back from his right shoulder to just above his left arse cheek. He shrieks in pain, body folding up and he looses his grip of the horse he had taken and falls to the ground, rolling a few times before coming to a stop.

You let up on Lady Dawn and she slows down to a canter, rounding sharply and bringing you to wear the broken man now lay. The Sons of Gold go by in a flash, Solhas before them picking of any of the other stragglers with his bow of Goldenheart. Swinging out of your saddle you kneel down next to the man, pushing his body over onto its back which causes him to groan in pain.

“I surrender,” he says to you in Low Valyrian, the bastard’s tongue of your mother language. His mouth full of blood that he spits at you earning him a kick in the side for his efforts.

Looking him over it is likely he will live. You whistle to two of your men and they come to collect him, preparing him for the nightmare ride home he’d be experiencing soon enough.

Ser Jaime rides up to you, his white horse and plate a staunch reminder of his station and he takes his helmet and looks to the sky. Hardly more than a few moments had passed since the sun had crested in the east and now.

You wipe the sweat from your brow, panting heavily, and say, “We ride for Steadhold in the hour.”

Lucas thinks it best to just execute them now. Ser Jaime is of a mind to tie them up by their wrists behind your horses on the ride back, any that manage to live. The Wall, the rest, leave for dead.

So we now have Veteran Heavy Cavalry & Elite Heavy Cavalry and everyone else is the same. And House Chelsted gets a huge boast with a +2 training and now has an Elite Heavy Cavalry as well. Ser Jaromir fought well in his father's memory.

Oh I also forgot to mentioned that Brynden gained 7 EXP, 1 per kill, and 3 for winning the mass combat. So that puts us up to 15 EXP and 3 Glory.

Alright so there doesn't seem to be much opinion other than kill them. Which you know makes sense. I'm going to leave this up for a moment while I stretch and get some food. Then we're going to start the next part. Gimme like 20 minutes.

Not these guys. They're all pretty worthless.
You could get something for the Captain or Belidos if you wanted to. But I honestly think Brynden would be just as quick to kill them and not give his enemies any more allies in Essos.

>>3586661
But that's a real thing. Brynden had it commissioned whenever Kate Yarson came on board. It'll be done when Obella gets home and just in time for a round of executions. There's even some neat fanart. Of the two that I've gotten while running this quest.

It definitely will help. Brynden's progression from lunatic with a lot of horses to professional military commander with a shit ton of elite horses is fun.

Anyway, looks like we're just going to have them executed. Fine by me. Starting up the next section in a moment.

It takes less than an hour to have the prisoners executed, Lucas and Solhas handling the bulk of it. You did not have the time to drag them back to Steadhold, nor a place to put more scum either, Seven only knew how long they’d be waiting around your dungeons until the Night’s Watch came again. You note Ser Tyrus taking a hand in executing one of the men as well. His face betrayed his emotions too much you think. But he was a talented lance and knew how to ride with the best of them. At least your family’s horses were not being used by layabouts in the Westerlands. That much you took solace in. Your men loot the camp for what little its worth. Despite being clearly Langward men these ones didn’t carry any particularly noteworthy arms or armour and thus most were tossed into the same pile and burnt all the same. There was a small chest about in the Captain’s tent that one of your men had found and it contained some coin. Likely a payment prior to his deployment here. Well coin was coin and you weren’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

When you leave off with a now bloodied and veteran force of cavalry you hardly looked back at the black smoke that rose into the sky and likely would for days. Ser Jaromir is riding amongst your men, a smile plastered upon his face. Apparently he had distinguished himself quite well against one of the other lesser Lieutenants. Ser Lucas says he fought like the Warrior himself, and had broken down into tears after being told he was truly his father’s son. He was a good lad. He’d grow into a better man. Your mind begins to wander to home. To your own family, of the brief conversation you had with your uncle prior to his leaving to deal with the host to the northwest. Regarding your son. And of him becoming a man.

---

Day 7, Month IX - 285AC ~ Mid-Morning

Your uncle had held the embrace a moment longer before breaking, his eyes were steely today, not clouded with turmoil but solid grey like iron, hard and unbroken.

“Brynden, a moment,” he says before you leave off, “I wish to speak of Victus.”

You cock your head to the side and turn to your uncle again, taking him by the shoulder to sit for a brief moment.

“Has he done something? Is it his training?”

“No nephew, no. He… He is as good squire as any man could hope for. He cares for the horses. Scours my armour, helps me to dress, and keeps my blade sharp. All the while learning his prayers and the tenants of true Knighthood. No… It is because of these things I wish to speak. The boy is ten-and-one now, when I was his age I saw what it was to go to war with your father. The boy is naive to this world, to his place in it.”

Your eyes narrow slightly and your uncle relents slightly his brow furrowing and eyes remaining focused upon you.

“I ask of you, as his father, that I may bring him to deal with this host to the northwest. He is my squire and yet he does not know what war is. It is time for him to grow. He will not fight, more than like. And I will protect him with my life should things go awry. But… Nephew it is time for the boy to grow.”

You give him a long look, hard and with the sting of wildfire upon the corners of your eyes. Victus was growing, you could not stop that. He had a cursory knowledge of war, through the Second Sons and your Sons of Gold. But he had never been upon the field before. More than like he would be over the bloody moon about the idea. But all the same he was still your son, a young boy. What if things did go awry, what if he died? If your uncle died protecting him? You could not thing of it. You take a deep breath and give your uncle your answer.

Allow Victus to join your uncle in the Battle of the Northern Princewood
>Yay, it was time for him to grow and see the world for what it was (Victus POV)

You smile up at your father. He looked as if he had been crying, but you did not know why. He didn’t cry much. Not since he saw Auntie Isis again. And before that you didn’t know. Maybe when your mother had died? But that thought made you sad. He smiles back and ruffles your hair despite knowing how much your hated it but he barks a laugh as the two of you break away from your embrace.

You’d missed him the past couple of months. He had been away in Highgarden for so long, and you had been in Blacksaithe before that and it had seemed much longer than a few months. The longest you had ever been away from him and now he was off again. He looked tired too you think. He never had those bags under his eyes before. They’re still bright and green like your own, but he seems… Burdened. You had learned that word recently from Maester Selwicky in Blacksaithe. Mostly because he had used it to describe having to tutor you alongside the Chelsted boys but you had learned it all the same. Your father kneels down, placing a hand on the nape of your neck and touching foreheads with you.

“Victus,” he says slowly, “Ser Dontos and I are going to war again.”

You face drops slightly, the cheery smile usually upon it lost with hearing your father would be in danger again. It almost feels like he just healed from his last wounds. And Ser Dontos was always adamantly against you going with him. So you’d be here in Steadhold again. Alone.

Your father sighs deeply and continues, “...you will be going with Ser Dontos.”

Immediately your face lights up again, you can feel your legs wanting to bounce but your father holds you in place.

“The world does not wait for another my son,” he continues, “Eventually you’d need to learn what it is to be a warrior. A Knight. A man. When you are out there, you listen to Ser Dontos. Do not ever question him. You are his squire and he will protect you. Promise me Victus, you will do as you are told, no matter what.”

You squirm slightly, unable to contain your excitement, “I promise father. I wouldn’t ever disobey an order from Ser Dontos.”

Your father chuckles slightly and you smile back, he says, “I know Victus… I know,” he stands again, his hand trailing across your head slightly, “Be good my son, be safe. And I will be here when you return.”

“Not if I get back first,” you respond and the two of you share a laugh before he leaves. You break away not long after, through the winding halls and staircases of Steadhold. Your father’s castle and home but not your own. You pass by Lorelei’s nursery and say a soft prayer for her and Lady Obella. To the Mother and to the Maiden.
>>
You hoped they were safe in King’s Landing, your father seemed upset that she wasn’t here. Actually most everyone seemed upset lately. The Westerlanders hadn’t been particularly unkindly towards you but you didn’t like many of the squires anymore than Ser Lucas liked the Reynold Knight, they all acted like being a bastard meant you weren’t your father’s son, and would taunt you in the yard. You hated it.

Finding yourself in the yard you find Ser Dontos and he gives you a long look before flicking his fingers and ordering you to fetch your clothes, armour, sword, shield, bow, and horses. You did so hurredly and meet him on horseback. Your armour was beginning to get a bit small for you, the blacksmith in Blacksaithe said you were likely to hit a growth spurt soon and to wait a few months until you grew to get resized. You asked Ser Dontos if you could bring your lance as well and he scoffed, telling you the thing was a play thing, for you to run rings at with and learn how to unhorse a man, not suitable for combat. You frown but agree either way, you were getting really good at running the rings though.

The Chelsted army is large, and bigger still in Blacksaithe. Only Ser Jaromir and his horses go off with your father, while Ser Dontos leads almost eight hundred men to the west along the Goldroad. He rides at the head of the column and you are allowed behind him with the other squires. Ser Quenten Banefort and Ser Haldan Rambton ride with him. Occasionally Ser Thom will come up from the rearguard to speak with Ser Dontos but rarely does he stay long. You too ride up and down the columns. Speaking with the other squires, your father’s men. Some of the boys that are new to Lady Alexes’ army, mostly archers. They always think they can beat you when you’ve made camp for the night. They haven’t been right yet.

It takes you almost three days until the army gets to where Ser Dontos wants to be. All the while you bounced with anticipation. He had met up with Lord Plumms scouts yesterday and learned where the bandits would be crossing into Chelsted land and he had ordered double time until you were there to meet them. He had ordered the boys to build some fortifications, but they weren’t much. Just ditches and palisades, some spiked sticks in the ground and then you waited again. You hear the sound of hoofbeats in the distance first before the army comes into view. Almost two hundred men on horses emerge from the woods. An hour after them the rest of the army. Ser Dontos didn’t seem to think these men were dedicated cavalrymen like the Sons of Gold of Ser Lucas’ Knights. It looked like almost six hundred men, a lot of bowmen, a lot of men on foot. It was an almost evenly matched battle. The air had become electric and you felt the animals around you spooked and running away from what was soon to come. A man on horseback, followed by two others leave the bandits ranks, flying the Langward flag boldly and one of peace beside.
>>
“They mean to parley,” Ser Dontos says under his breath, “Squire gather Ser Banefort, Ser Thom, and Ser Rambton. And your own horse. It is unlikely you’d ever see a parley with your father. It is good for you to see what the old and honorable do before they go to war.”

You nod slightly and scamper off, it takes almost twenty minutes but you manage to gather everyone and ride out behind them. Holding the flag of your father. Flown beside House Banefort, the Baratheons, the Longwaters and House Chelsteds. Ser Dontos was tense, you could help it in the way he held Penance’s reins and how discontent the animal was. And you too begin to feel a nervousness in your stomach. You did not know what to expect.

The five of you arrive before the three Langward men, and the one in the middle steps forward first, an old man still wearing a suit of plate.

“Ser Dontos Malroy, the Black Knight of Steadhold. It is truly a pleasure to make your acquitance once again. My name is Ser Silas Langward. And I have come with terms of your surrender.”

[End Chapter LV-i]

Again sorry for the short session today guys. I was really hoping to get this battle done too, I am just absurdly tired out of nowhere. I might do the thing some other QMs do and do some minor updates throughout the rest of the week. But yeah, sorry. Hope you at least enjoyed watching Brynden destroy everything in his path. He actually means to fight against an army flying the King's banner. Do the Langwards believe that Robert's regime is too insecure and untested to impose peace among unruly lords fighting among themselves or he knows something we don't?

REDWARD PRIDE WESTEROS WIDE BABY!!

Everyone knows Brynden Malroy is a shit head sell sword who is deliberately aggravating one of the most fervent and loyal vassals, Lord Royce Redward. this.

from an objective standpoint outside Brynden's personal vendetta the Redward line was loyal, Royce just happened to be a bastard in the literal and figurative senses.

Even if he hadnt betrayed the family, the 10 ton shit hammer was still coming one way or another.

Royce is utter shit as a lord and a despicible person, but neither his ancestors nor descendants are necessarily "stained by evil".

It could be, but you would think Obella and her spy network would be more informed about them than that. We know they have close to 200 men on horses but they aren't dedicated cavalrymen and 600 men in footmen and bowmen. Here is one way I picture the battlefield.

Langward will either hit both flanks or only one with all his cavalry, and them march the rest of his forces forward to keep ours in place, with his archers supporting the infantry. One flank breaks so goes the rest of our line.

So to compensate for this we can put the Malroy infantry on their right to incite the attack there, but with the Cheslted archers behind and the Cheslted Heavy infantry next to it. The Longwater veterans with the Plumm scouts serve a parallel role on our other flank if their main attack goes there. Finally Banefort and his personal guard holds the center. If we can withstand their cavalry charge and disorganize their cavalry we can move on the flank of their infantry and break their moral.
>>
>>3586962
Father. Any chance of a note on when next thread or when you would update ?
>>
Alright so sorry for the disappearing act the past couple of days. I've been incredibly busy with work and planning to move to my new place. So yeah. Anyway.

>>3586971
I believe this came off the wrong way without the rest of Ser Silas' statement. You'll all see the sort of man he is and that wasn't meant to be a bold fuck you statement that it seems to have been read as.

>>3587031
Nah he's been around for awhile. Just hasn't made an appearance prior to now because he didn't need to. The exile is a bastard.

>>3587302
Relatively. Brynden tends to be a bit dramatic with the "he scalped her" thing as she can still grow hair, but its scars not a full on scalping. The hair was cut away roughly and left a lot of scars on her head so it'll never grow in perfectly again. In her defiance of Royce she didn't regrow it the entire time she was with him and believed she was all that was left. She's allowing it to regrow slightly now, testing the waters, now that Brynden is back. And it's patchy and frail. Very likely is she'll just go back to keeping it bald and wearing headscarves as she had been prior.

>>3588012
Obella is her own woman. I think over the year and a half gap that Obella is still an incredibly arrogant, prideful, and independent woman. If she wants to get to know Isis and start a friendship between mothers, she damn well will. Especially because her read on Brynden is that he loves his family the most and wants his sister back more than anything so she may as well get started now.

>>3588165
One of the big reasons Brynden is holding off is to assure that Royce doesn't have Isis when he does siege and burn his tower to the ground.

>>3591419
Either way Dontos is annoyed as fuck. But he'd never curse the Seven. The horror of such thoughts.

>>3591501
>>3591513
I mostly did it because I know Victus is such a fan favourite character and eventually people would want to see through his eyes. He doesn't have the anger that young Tyrus does so he isn't as inclined towards outward violence. But in turn he is still a bit naive about the world, Brynden being the biggest contributor to that. So there's a certain innocence through his lens and seeing war, his father, Dontos, the House through it is different though I don't believe I really hit that home yet with the single post.

>>3591991
That really is awesome even if there are some inaccuracies. I've always wanted to do a wiki for the quest. Even though I've never had the time.

>>3593636
>>3594971
This is such an interesting, and frankly true, perspective that is very often forgotten. If you couldn't tell I've very much played with what it means to be a bastard and the sheer range of people that are amongst your friends, family, and enemies. Victus, Royce, the Longwaters family, Mason, etc. It's a fun aspect I've played with this quest. An alternative title could very well be A Song of Revenge and Bastards.
>>
That being said, knowing the history of the Redwards and what they did to earn being vassals of House Malroy and how loyal and linked they were to them is often forgotten as well. Its something that Isis holds onto as the hope that her daughters can still be what the Redwards were despite the sins of their father.

I think I'm going to need to do an Isis scene before we do the annulment scene so everyone has perspective on both sides of this and understands how incredibly splitting it is. To be honest, I don't even know which way I'd pick. It is hands down one of my favorite things I've created because it's so divisive and both sides have equally valid points based on Brynden's characterization.

>>3593645
Not a completely accurate retelling but yeah, basically.

Hemgrove was previously shared no-mans-land territory that both the Langwards and the Malroys logged but neither officially governed or took tax from. Since the Langward and Malroy relationship broke down following the death of Lord Roger Langward and Linden/Lestors deflection to the rebel side, both sides decided to consolidate their power and press the claim they had on the land.

The "peace talks" were supposed to be for Linden to get a measure of Brynden before faking the whole bandit attack and running a frame job on the newly returned sellsword for breaking a parley, rules of engagement, using sellswords/bandits to attack a peaceful neighboring Lord, etc. It was going to be a whole big thing. Y'all said nah I'm good and we avoided it entirely. I remember being so lost on what to do because my notes were for that so i had to completely redo things.

>>3595746
That actually was a part of it. But there is a lot more to Silas you'll see here soon. Lestors over confidence is because he is a lunatic with PTSD and a hell of a sword arm and regardless of the outcome of the trial was always the deadman's switch. He's going for broke, the Crown be damned.

>>3595949
Obella's spy network is still barely established. She's using the chaos to get her people seeded but she doesn't have the "collect intel" part down yet. Tbh I actually sped up the build time on that from 9 months to now so it could be used and because I know no one would notice and narratively it made sense. Every House fortunes we're going to have a "gather intel" option from here on out where Obella can tap one of her cells and collect with the appropriate rolls to see if she succeeds and to what degree or if she fails. You don't have to do it every House Fortunes, because spying is seriously risky business, but the option will be there if you're trying to find some information. i.e. the fuck is Royce up to him being quiet ain't right.
>>
>>3596387
To clarify when I say they "aren't dedicated cavalry" I mean that their typical infantry who have been given mounts so they can travel faster/further. They need to dismount to fight since they aren't trained on horseback and the horses themselves aren't war-trained either. So Silas hasn't brought any cavalry to this fight and in total is packing about 600 men, 200 of which rode common coursers here as outriders.

Victus is going to make an interesting observation regarding the horses when we pick up again. And the option to capture them is something Dontos may think of considering the need for speed back to Steadhold and to whom those horses once belonged.

ANYWAY.

So I said I might update during the week and it just isn't looking like that's going to happen. I wasn't planning on running next week but I have a small frame I can that will finish up this battle from Victus' POV with some decision making on Dontos' end, survivors rolls, and then a vote on whose POV we want to do for the Siege of Steadhold (Mason, Dontos, or Brynden). Then the next thread we're going to pick up with the Siege immediately and the aftermath of it.

From there the framework for the forseeable future of the quest is as such:
>Deal with the Langly situation (Heavy Obella involvement)
>Isis and the annulment (aka threatening the High Septon with blackmail)
>Mason and Elionwy's wedding
>Obella and Brynden's honeymoon, get sweet dragonbone bow
>Visit Long Isle, kill pirates with Ser Jon Longwaters (Royce related), negotiate with Lady Sareya Vollion using her family's clout to freeze the dragon egg out of Royce's use (she's going to do some rolls, and you'll need to do some serious negotiating, she wants something major from Brynden for this favor)
>Go to King's Landing, do the reparations trial and the pomp-y returning of Godscrown to Lucos. Laugh in revenge and gold.
>Get back home, consolidate and take the next Redward step

Couple different notes.

Someone once asked why we're sitting on our hands with Royce and I had to collect my notes to remember and figure out what the big things that were stopping from Brynden straight slapping Royce with his own dick were. Below are the qualifiers for the "perfect run" to ruin Royce and get Brynden his max gain. Strictly speaking Brynden has enough right now to go on to win and have him dead but wouldn't get the absolute best results. I.e. Isis and the girls getting lost or hurt in the shuffle, the Crown taking full control of the operation and landing a Knight loyal to the Baratheons in Redwatch Tower/Bolthole Hall, and Brynden potentially losing the chance to kill Royce himself or Royce fleeing. Lord Varys told Brynden to wait, why? Who knows, likely because he benefits from a strong House Malroy with a strategic point that the Westermen would need to use to get to King's Landing, and a chaotic western Crownlands where he can push his agenda.
>>
>Get Isis and his heirs into your possession.
This prevents him from using them as hostages in war/siege. Killing them in a burn and salt the fields last ditch effort. And for Isis becoming guilty by association when Brynden brings the slaving thing to the Crown and receives his official letter from Bobby B to Paint the Town Redward. It also puts the last of the Redwards in your control, an important political piece in the future when you claim the Redward’s lands as your own.

>"Freeze" the dragon egg/Prevent Royce from using it as collateral for a massive loan
Currently Royce owes a lot of people a lot of money. Tychano Osten, the Bright Banners, numerous bribees and smugglers, and a couple of people in Duskendale and King's Landing keeping things quiet. He's trying to mortgage the mortgage to keep himself afloat. If he does so, and you and/or the crown take him out, the Iron Bank is going to straight take the egg to recoup their losses and it'll be gone forever and Brynden will never be able to recover that wealth that would bring his House entirely out of debt or recover an incredibly precious and rare family heirloom, one of the last bits of his family's history. Freezing the asset of Royce's hands is the best option to prevent him from gaining the cash money he needs to keep himself afloat (thus weakening him significantly and making him more desperate and sloppy) and eventually recovering it yourself with further negotiations on Brynden’s end. Currently this is in the works when Brynden negotiate with Lady Sareya Vollion, Ser Jon Longwaters wife. She knows what its worth and the price of her services will be hefty.

>Dismantle Royce’s alliance(currently in the process)
Outright attacking Royce would have brought his two major allies into play and they would have massively outmanned you with troops and economic might and been able to fight multiple front wars, attack your food sources/smallfolk, attack your wealth holdings, put your castle to siege, etc. all of that would stretch you incredibly thin, possibly even leading to your defeat. A sidelined House Langward, extinct/under-thumb House Langly, and cowed House Blount prevents them from coming into play when you eventually attack Royce and allows you to focus on putting his castle to siege and sweeping in with your allies to ruin any other pockets. Right now Brynden is dealing with the Langwards, and after the repariations he is going to have them dead to rights. The Blounts however, while cowardly, are tied to the Langwards and will look to retaliate in their own right. They are Lannister lackeys to the end however and a Lannister will be your best bet to tell them to fuck off or get ruined by the Brynden Malroy Revenge Tour, and I’m sure some of them will be willing to talk about it to cut their losses and keep things mum. Might need to talk to someone about that.
>>
Putting the alliance down also maximizes Brynden’s personal gain in the wars, i.e. Langward Reparations and Royce’s lands. But it might be wise to spread some of the wealth to your allies however (Chelsted and Longwaters).

>Disrupt his smuggling/slave trade (currently in the process of)
This cuts him off from much needed money and allies. The less savoury ones are sure to go to ground and you’ll never catch them, but for the most part you’ll cut him off. Ser Jon Longwaters highly suspects these supposed pirates are actually smugglers led by this false Malroy that Illiad encountered in Myr and who kidnapped the Celtigar girl and boy. He is no doubt also connected to Tychano Osten, and the Golden Company as well, and dealing with him will lose both Royce and Tychano are seriously competent point man. Lord Stannis Baratheon has been contacted by his bannerman, Lord Velaryon after several letters from Ser Jon about these smugglers/pirates in the Blackwater Bay and he is none too pleased. Lord Celtigar, is also trying to get his children back, and while doesn’t want to work with the Malroys to do it, is being called upon by Lord Stannis. A righteous hammer of justice is about to land in the Blackwater Bay and reverberate to the Crownlands and Myr.
>>
>Build the absolute best fucking case you can so no one can tell you this is a Crown exclusive matter but it’s a Malroy issue (currently in the process)
Magister Tychano Osten has had a vendetta against Brynden for years, and has gone as far to bankroll his enemies in the Crownlands and embroiled himself as the shadowman behind this all. Brynden has put together that his true enemy is Tychano and has captured his nephew (the guy who was pretending to be a Dargood) prisoner, a Bright Banners Captain that can connect Tychano, Royce, and Linden together, and is very likely to have a final piece with Captain illeo of Volantis, the Captain of the Bright Banners who has all of the contracts between himself Tychano and Royce, real things written in blood. Saul Cromwell has all of this information and is hard at work putting together the absolute best case Brynden can bring before the Crown to say, “Look, I understand that slaving, smuggling, etc. all break the King’s Peace and this is an issue of the Crown. However, the actions taken by Royce Redward and his allies have been orchestrated by a man who solely wishes to harm me. Here is the extensive evidence of such. With the Crown’s support and blessings I would deal with House Redward and my own enemy in one fell swoop. As to keep and return the King’s Peace and bring the Seven Kingdoms no further into the politics and scheming of a Myrish Magister and bringing a slaving piece of shit to justice in the name of the Crown, etc.” Being able to come up with this will give Brynden exclusive rights to deal with Royce as he sees fit once defeated, what to do with Redwatch Tower and Bolthole Hall, what to do with the lands, etc. Doing all of the above will also help your case, as you’ve done the vast majority of the legwork already, will have support of the Master of Law, Hand of the King, High Septon, and Master of Ships during the case. Granted the King may very well want to come along and summon a host of his own to help because being King is boring af, but Brynden will get first say. And that is what will facilitate his Revenge the most.

So that’s where we’re at with that. A lot of moving pieces, but a lot of them coming to a head very soon. Hope that helps.

Also, someone, last thread I believe mentioned that the Longwaters wouldn’t have broken off all trade and become our enemy/end our alliance had Lucas died during the Trial and you were right, they wouldn’t have, Ser Jon would have been devastated yes, but not break all contact.
>>
So I’ve decided to make that whole thing more fair and introduce a new character/potential ally during Mason’s wedding Tourney. Ser Roger Hogg is the bannerman of Lord Winston Hayford, and though he’s loyal to him still, he is incredibly concerned by his recent behaviour, degrading mental and physical health, and becoming reclusive and unwilling to do anything for his lands, bannermen, and smallfolk. So Ser Hogg is going to come by, to compete in the Tourney, but also to talk to Brynden about building an alliance so they can continue to support House Hayford in these difficult times. The man is bristly and more a warrior than anything, and lacks care for anything other than straight forwardness. He is in his late 30s, and though has married once before, lost his wife and is currently unwed but does have an heir. He is obviously from a smaller Knightly House, and has little in the way of trade, but does have a decent military to call on if you can build some sort of relationship with him. That’s going to be Brynden’s main business about the Tourney outside of Mystery Knight competing in the Archery contest. I think that’ll even things out a touch.

Last thing, next thread is Wednesday 26th June, at 5PM EST. I know it’s a late and weird time but I’ve got a lot going on and the whole thing is less than ideal for me as well. Hope to see you all there and that the above information gives everyone a lot to chew on for a bit.
>>

>So I’ve decided to make that whole thing more fair
That's very forgiving of you. I didn't think it was unfair at all, but since this benefits us I will not complain!

>Last thing, next thread is Wednesday 26th June, at 5PM EST
Nice, earlier than I expected although I will only be there for the first post or two. Thanks for the heads up, dad
>>
>>3596795
She wants Lorelei to marry her son. Calling it now.
>>
>>3596795
Two things missing from that Father

Gaming the system with the Thornes and Chytterings, and setting up trade with Chelsted. (does the woodcutting they're doing for us count?)
>>
>>3597003
also missing making nice with the Daynes over Nessa's demise and subsequent cover up to nail Langward to the wall.
>>
>>3597003
Former is going to be part of the pre-reparations part. Most of those are broad strokes, there will be stuff in between. The latter Illiad will bring up next thread, as he will have banged something out with Lady Alexes by then. Using her for the lumber conversion however is helping, as she is making bank off of it.

>>3597007
Going to be honest I'm probably going to either gloss over this or not even bother with it. It's a thread I don't view as overly important for Brynden to take into his personal hands. And if I'm being real, I don't even remember enough about it at this point. Obella will have made good with her mother about it by now, and Gerold is an edgy darklord anyway who benefited from his elder sister dying.

That does remind me however. If there is anything else that people believe is important enough to cram into the next two months go ahead and remind me and I'll see if it doesn't fit into somewhere else or if I need to make note of it.
>>
>>3597188
So when will Brynden go mad and try to make pure valyrian children with his sister like the targs ?

Also i am happy that you liked my wiki box of the battle. I will just put inaccuracies as number fudging. Shit like that happened all the time in the real world and i could imagine Brynden would claim his victory was more impressive than it was.
>>
>>3597188
Would Obella finding out she is pregnant and pout about it to Brynden count as important enough ?
>>
>>3597188
>there is anything else that people believe is important enough to cram into the next two months go ahead and remind me

Goldsong's colts and fillies.
>>

A Lannister such as Jaime perhaps? Or maybe even Tygon Reynold? Family relation and all that?
>>
>>3596802
>>3596807

Also, while I appreciate you trying to be fair, it was no more than we deserved for betraying our family and letting Wesley die. It was a largish part of why I wanted to save Wesley, to keep our family ties.

But I wont look a gifthorse in the mouth, and any chance given to help House Hayford in any way I will support whole heartedly.
>>
>>3597188
mentioned that Brynden having a vision/dream of his lost family telling him about how they feel about him and what he has done
>>
>>3596807

I don't think you need to make choices "fair", but you do what you think is best. It's totally in-character for Wesley's dad to hate us. It'll be good to have a secondary in with House Hayford though to go around the dad and make sure wesley's kid is cared for.
>>
>>3596798

Ah fuck do we have to talk to the queen?
>>
>>3598295
Talk to Jaime who talks to blount ?
>>
>>3598295
Let's try talking to Jaime first.
>>
>>3597188
holy crap, thank you so much for the recap and outline! It's been amazingly helpful.

I dont entirely recall, but I assume we pressed for a ward from Langward. I would still like to have said ward "rescued" in order to place someone next to Beatrice Blount. Even if we do make nice with the lannisters it would be useful to have someone in Blount going forward. And if Langward rejoins the scheme after the current battles (as the young lord might do with tychanos help) it will likely be the end of their house. Ideally I would like to see someone more favorable to us instilled on the upper gods eye. hell we could open up trade to harrenhall and other surrounding lands if things go well enough. Anyway, it seems like more of an "Obella" plan than a Brynden one.
>>
>>3598390

Honestly I think I'd rather just have the 5 wealth than an extra spy cell in the Blounts. We really really need cash right now to expand our herds and rebuild Steadhold, especially with having scrubbed out the last of our wealth on siege emplacements. Even having the Landward kid as a ward to sideline them seems loose to me. We NEED that Tyrell deal if Malroy is going to become the proper banner lord we deserve to be.
>>
>>3599247
Agree, we need cash fast if we want to fullfil the amount of horses the Tyrells are likely to order.
>>
>>3599247
Honestly I'd be ok with not taking a ward and doubling up on wealth. Bankrupting there house is pretty good for keeping them out of future fights.
>>
>>3599247
>>3599502
>>3599524
We already did the vote. And wards are stupid useful especially the one we picked
>>
>>3596795
>she wants something major from Brynden for this favor
So she definitely wants to marry Lorelei to her son. Honestly im not opposed to marriage alliances with the longwaters. But not Lorelei, for sure not her. Brynden could probably talk her down to second daughter. Which is still pretty good for both sides. We'll probably need to sweeten the pot some more though and i don't know what else she'd want
>>
>>3601345
She wants Brynden's Valyrian seed
>>
>>3599577
I kind of remember a Machiavellian plan involving letting the ward ""escape"" so that we could gain a spy in their house and lure him into attacking us a couple of years down the line in order to completely destroy their house.
Are we going down that line?
>>
>>3601657
Obella already has taken the liberty so no real reason too waste the Ward.
>>
>>3601657
>>3601886
having a spy in the house was a welcome secondary benefit, the real reason I wanted to do so was to maneuver a vastly weakened house Langward back into plotting against brynden thereby ensuring their utter annihilation instead of mere crippling.

someone else wants Langward weakened as well.

I would prefer to send both the men in our custody to the wall. mostly because I dont want a deranged sociopath who would literally sell out his own family as a neighbor even if he will kill off the more troublesome members of his family.

that leaves the royal cupbearer as heir. And he hates the fuck out of us.

seven forbid he start charging tolls along the gods eye river as that would hamper potential trade to the north.

So, we crush their threefold attack, take a ward and then when he escapes he has all kinds of misinformation indicating that Brynden is nowhere near as strong as he lets on. the weakened house calls upon tychano for support (damning themselves without knowing it) since the queen is unlikely to throw further resources after bad.

we might just end thwir house in its entirety and gain a more tractable northern neighbor.

not to mention a straight route from harrenhall to kings landing which will make Malroy and its allies crucial in years to come.
>>
>>3603342
I personally take the sociopath over the vengeful heir as the head of house Langward. You know that the sociopath will lie, kill and betray anyone but will only do in his self-interest. The vengefully minded can and will offend disregard their self interest for the sake of revenge making them more unpredictable.

We should also consider other houses how the other houses will see the head of the house moving forward, a son looking to avenge his father is more sympathetic than the uncle who testified against his own brother and is sure to try to get rid of his own nephew.

Also think about it in the long term, I rarer not have to deal with the son at his prime when we are starting to get old.
>>
>>3603448
the revenge minded son is predictable precisely because he hates us. Even moreso than his sociopathic relative.

a man who need i remind you betrayed his entire family to either death or ruin on the off chance he could become lord.

we have no idea what he will do. maybe he will aide with royce, maybe he will wait 7 years while consolidating power then poison us in our sleep over some minor offense. Maybe he will never lift a finger against us. We dont know.

The boy on the other hand will attack us directly and as soon as he can. unless the queen uses her connections with the Blounts to councel him not to.

But, Beatrice Blount will likely be pissed at lord Langwards death, and the "unjust" theft of her child.

All in all, if an opportunity presents itself, the young Langward will take it.

As for other houses, noone knows langly is a sociopath. He WILL present himself sympathetically as a rational man trying to save his family from breaking the Kings peace and the consequences thereof. He will find ready allies from those who hate Brynden by claiming he was wronged, and ready allies among the chivalrous by claiming to be a righteous man seeking to preserve the honor and dignity of his family.

Lucos(?) on the other hand will be all about revenge, which at this point limits him to support from those who already hate the Malroy's. A much smaller pool of candidates. He will lack a sociopath's ability to present whatever face he needs to. Thus any support he gets will weaken those who have reason to hate us.

In short I would prefer a hostile and inexperienced youth who will certainly attack than a clever and manipulative man whom we will always have to watch.

Lucos thinks with his sword and his hate, but the other thinks with his head.
>>
>>3603448
As for the long term, I am thinking of the long term.

Baiting the Langwards into joining back with Royce makes winning more difficult, but it will demolish their house to the roots when we win.

being sanctioned by the crown then repeating the very events that caused the problem in the first place? with a slaver? when Cersei is clearly backing out of her private vendetta with Brynden?

There wont be a house Langward left after the fallout. And that will send a powerful message to anyone who would trifle with future Malroy's.

And personally, Wesley died by that man's order. Noone with his blood gets to profit from that. Ride unto the sunset, and finish what you start.

All this presumes he allies with Royce. Given his father was setting up to betray them and we'll have skullfucked his family for the foreseeable future? He's probably going to sit by and simmer impotently until it recovers. The boy is vengeful yes, but as Brynden himself has displayed, sometimes you need to wait, bide your time and then pick your shot.

Possibly. She was part of a mini-quest I wanted to run for awhile set in Steadhold in 246AC during a Tourney. You'd play as one of 4 different competitors and the main goals were to win tourney events and find someone to marry/get betrothed to and all the negotiations that go with that. She was one of the four marriage options. But i never got around to running it so it's sort of a loose end now. She could have married and there would be long distant claimants, without the Redward name, to Redwatch Tower. Or more direct ones, albeit of poor stature, still in Steadhold or Kings landing, depending upon the choices made.

Maybe in the future, after Royce, I'll run it and see what ended up happening to her.

Oh and here's the link to the unfinished document if you're interested in what that quest was about. A lot missing on that, but eh.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bRXpac1FEaK1XG2uwdwm_kzK_1q4hSmNdAZ4bdRQFkA/edit?usp=drivesdk

Specifically, here's her blurb:

>Lady Brynne Redward - Lady Brynne is the widow of Lord Gunthur Gaunt of four-and-twenty and is the only daughter of Ser Corey Redward and younger sister of Ser Bors Redward, the Knight of Redwatch Tower. She is financially secure and self sufficient, maintaining a Household of her own in the Redward Townhouse within Steadhold’s Outer Ring, because of her dower (she sold her late husband's lands back to his family), which she has invested in exotic trade goods, particularly those of Myr (lace, carpets, and tapestries). In fact, she has her very own stall of exotic goods at the market (tended by one of her retainers), but it does not stop her from browsing the other stalls to see what her competition is up to. A very small and petite woman, her light frame is thin and slender and she does not even reach the height of 5 feet, but it does not mean that she will be easily intimidated nor does it stop her from taking her place and getting her due during negotiations. Her smooth skin is freckled from days of riding with her falcons and her blue eyes seem to shimmer from under her auburn locks. She often smiles with sardonic wit, as if she knows what you are going to say before you do.

The Redward Townhouse still exists actually. If you look at >>3585745, that little lonely house beneath the gates of Steadhold castle is it. It's just burnt out and uninhibited now. Maybe a place for Isis? Either way, thats that.

Again sorry about no run. I know this thread has been a mess and I apologize profusely. Things are about to settle for me again and we'll resume soon. I'll let you guys know asap.

I'm struggling with the whole no exp status thing. Just some thoughts:
Pros: it does lead to more well-rounded characters. The setting does emphasize particularly talented people from high status backgrounds, which is hard to recreate when you let it eat so much exp.
Cons: Isn't part of status about knowing how to be more noble/lordly? It would make sense for a lord or landed knight to have invested more experience/time into such pursuits as opposed to a hedge knight or soldier that is solely focused on fucking, fighting, and eating (in no particular order). Also, if the goal is to make things challenging, then eating into your MC's exp while following the core book is a decent way to do that.

On a slightly related note to that last point, the house rule for getting rid of the armor penalty, while I can sympathize with the reasoning, is a big part of why Landon was steamrolling so hard. He was knocking a full degree of success off of his opponents just because he was wearing plate. The system just doesn't work well when giving that extra advantage to plate wearers.
