Howdy all, and welcome to “A Song of Duty and Spite; House Reynold Quest”. Here we play as Ser Mervyn Reynold, a lowborn son of a bastard hedge knight who, through his skill at arms and a bit of luck, has married into the noble House Reynold of Ember Peak. He currently serves as Lady Elleanor Reynold’s sword shield, and in the murky depths of in-house politics he will attempt to rise high despite coming from such humble origins. These waters are treacherous however. Lady Elleanor has not forgotten her once betrothed, the late Reynard Reyne, and while she attempts to keep control of her house, her husband Lord Titus has the backing of Lord Tywin himself, and has a strong influence over the Reynold Military. The Mad King grows more and more erratic, and there are rumours that the relationship between Lord Tywin and King Aerys grow strained. Will you remain Lady Elleanors right hand, or will you strike out on your own in your pursuit of position and power? Let get stuck in and find out!!

Dramatis Personae:
>Ser Mervyn Reynold, 25, Our MC.
Ser Mervyn grew up the son of a bastard hedge knight who did not know his father and a blacksmiths daughter. After his mother passed at the age of 5, his father began travelling the westerlands to sell his sword to anyone who would hire him. Eventually, the man passed away to a pox when Mervyn was 17, but not before knighting his son. He than took his fathers horse and mule and travelled in the same way. Eventually, he heard of a tourney for a young maiden’s hand, he attended and won handily over many much nobler knights. He now serves the Lady of the House, Elleanor Reynold as her sworn shield.

>Alyssa Reynold, 17, Mervyn’s Wife
Alyssa is a pretty young girl who is currently 6 and a half months pregnant. She is driven and tenacious, if not impatient, and she has been reared to be a player in the game by her mother. While not considered beautiful as her elder sister might be, her red curls and sea green eyes certainly make her comely. She is gifted at weaving through the art of noble intrigue and has a knack for remembering heraldry and house history.

>Lord Titus Reynold, 46
Lord Titus was born Titus Lantell of Lannisport, and grew up to be a knight who swore his sword to the Lannisters. During the Reyne/Tarbeck Rebellion, he was commanded by Tywin Lannister to march with 300 men to confine the Lady Elleanor, then a maiden of 16 years, and prevent House Reynold from aiding the Reynes and Tarbecks in rebellion as a favour to her father, the late Lord Marqus. A relatively oafish man who cares not for the workings of his house, he is not without a degree of cunning and ultimately seeks to usurp his wife as the true head of the house.

>Lady Elleanor Reynold, 36
Lady Elleanor is a woman who remembers. Once betrothed to Ser Reynard Reyne, she endured losing both her father and betrothed in the span of a year at the age of 16, and was subsequently married off to a lowly knight of Lannisport. She endured the dishonour, even providing 6 children to her husband, all in the memory of her father and Reynard. She is the true power in Ember Peak, and seeks to retain control of her house by any means necessary.

--- 29/04/281 ---

It had been a fruitful three days since you had asked Ser Tyrion to set up a meeting with Lord Tyler Lannister for you. You had explored Lannisport thoroughly with some of your men, and your mind had run to the thought of your unborn child, and you had taken the better part of a day to consult with a wood worker about the construction of a noble crib for your babe to lie it’s head. Together the two of you had come to an agreement. It would be constructed of the finest Crakehall lumber gold could buy, and the bedposts would resemble eagles rising to the heavens. Sturdy and safe, a far cry from whatever box your own parents would have had access to lay you in during your own infancy. The extravagance cost you a dragon, but you had spent it happily after seeing the level of craftmanship that the woodworker was capable of. There would be no tumbling cradles or other such nightmares for your child. With your mind still on the unborn, you remembered a conversation Allysa had with you before you had left for the city, regarding that of a wet nurse. It was unfashionable and improper, she said, for a noblewoman to nurse her own child and had asked for you to find a suitable woman so as to allow her to be free to pursue her other responsibilities and interests amidst the castle. As such, you had asked the twins and they had both smirked mischievously saying they knew a girl that they had grown up with and both knew her to be able to “give suck” as it were and had taken you to their old haunts in the city. You had found her in a small hovel, a woman perhaps a year or two older than the twins but with a baby on the breast and a few small children scurrying around her feet, and upon asking learned she kept a brood of no less than 5 children. She had scowled in irritation at Derrick and cocked an eye brow at Merrick before introducing herself as Holly, and she explains she was widowed last year and was currently working in an alehouse on the docks in order to support her children.

“Ser here’s lookin’ for a wet nurse Holly.” Ser Derrick explained in his common born way.

“He’s a knight in a proper castle too” said his brother Merrick to illuminate the situation further.

“Better work than whoring down at the docks” they say together as they irritatingly often did.

She had looked at you with mistrusting, but hopeful eyes before giving you the condition that she would only be willing to on the condition that her children would be allowed to come with her. They ran the gamut from the newborn who was currently suckling to a 6 year old boy, and you had assured her that her children would be welcome in the castle, and that a monthly salary of 10 silver stags would be her recompense, as well as room and board. At that, she had handed off her babe to Merrick and flung her arms around you and agrees whole heartedly, saying that she would make herself present at the manor you were staying at tomorrow morning.
>>
You had been in a herb shop haggling over some rose buds for Allysa’s garden when a squire in the livery of House Lannister of Lannisport had found you and brought a summons for you to attend Lord Tyler in Lann’s Keep by mid-afternoon. You had concluded your haggling with the proprietor and left to follow the squire up the winding streets of Lannisport, taking in the earthy smells of Westeros’ third largest city, mounted proudly upon Triumph as he diligently bore you on the cobblestone streets, intelligently stepping so as to avoid night soil or other debris. The journey took the better part of two hours to castle, but eventually you came to a long wall, made of the same sand stone as the streets and you followed it towards a gate guarded by no less than 6 heavily armoured men, clad in gilded steel and bearing formidable black shafted halberds. They open their guard to allow you and your small party into the castle where your men are taken to a different part of the castle, and the squire takes you up a staircase, through a courtyard, through an antechamber, left, right, right and up a spiral staircase towards Lord Tyler Lannisters solar at the top of the central tower of the keep.

You see Lord Tyler sitting at his desk, working away diligently at some decree or order and the squire gestures you to take a seat, which you accept. You watch his hand flow across the paper and take stock of the state of the mans princely looking solar. It was richly furnished, with myrish and qhohorik tapestries adorning the walls and the desk itself was made of a dark wood that Allysa had once told you came from the Summer Isles. The cup that contained what you were sure would be a noble vintage of wine appeared to be made of solid silver. Everything about the solar, and indeed the man screamed to that of wealth and power. And you waited. But the man was intent on his parchment and ink and the soft scratching of quill on vellum itched at your ear...

Time seemed to creep on ever so slowly, as if watching cold molasses moving on a frigid winters morning but you waited. You had stood and walked over to a side table and poured yourself a glass of wine into one of the finely wrought silver cups and you rolled the weight of it in your hand before sampling the vintage. You hadn’t been wrong, it was a fruity red, the perfect wine for a crisp spring day and the taste danced over your tongue as you retook your seat at his desk.

After what seems like an eternity, but what was in reality no more than an hour, you see the man fold up his parchments and reach for his wax and seal, pouring a dollop of the carmine wax onto the each of the papers before pressing the anchor and lion sigil of his house into the cooling wax leaving fresh imprints, and he looks up to you with calm eyes that give away little of what goes on behind them. All you could see was that they were Lannister green and cunning.

“Ser…Mervyn? Yes, Ser Mervyn, good day Ser. I hope my man found you in a timely manner. These are busy days I find myself in and I find I have little and less time to complete my business. Ser Tyrion wrote me and informed me you requested an audience with me, one that could potentially benefit the both of us. I believe I have grasped his meaning, and have come to understand that you are on the search for a handmaiden for your wife?”

You nod your head carefully before taking another sip of wine. You knew there was more meaning behind his words than you understood and would have to play this negotiation carefully. This was something far more suited to Tygon or Allysa, and in truth you were out of your depth.

“Has Ser Tyrion explained my situation? No? He truly is an honourable man. That and his ability to gather wealth is a large part of the reason that House Lantell currently stands the highest of the knightly houses of Lannisport. Well Ser, I have a daughter. Only she is not my wifes if you catch my meaning. Jillianne has been brought up here in Lann’s Keep, but as she grows older, I’m afraid my wife takes more insult at her being here. Jillianne has currently taken to spending her time in the Sept of Loren, being the pious girl that she is, but she is still too young to join the faith properly as she wishes too. So I am in a position to allow her to join you in Ember Peak and serve your wife instead. Perhaps in time she may even find a husband amongst those in your service instead of becoming a septa. However, I know the worth of a daughter of a Lannister, even one born on the wrong side of the sheets and I will require certain favors of my own. Ser Tyrion informs me that you and Lord Titus have been in talks recently, and I have a question for you Ser. What do you make of my son? Ser Leroy?"

You swallowed as you considered what exactly the Lord before you was asking. You knew little and less of the man, only that he seemed an adequate knight and he’d acquitted himself well during the melee. You knew Joanna was often seen with him as well and seemed to prefer him to Sebaston Farman, but other than that, he remained a relative mystery to you. You cough, bring your hand up to cover your mouth politely before beginning your response.

“He is…well he seems to be a capable knight m’lord. He fought well in the melee, and is fearsome with that two handed sword of his. I can’t speak to as to his character, but if I were to wager I’d say he doesn’t lack for courage, and carries himself with honour.”

Lord Tyler nods his head and maintains eye contact with you as his hand idly plays with his inkwell and a moment of silence prompts you to fill the void. Coughing again, slightly more awkwardly this time, you continue.

“He…he obviously takes his knightly vows seriously. I’ve seen Joanna and him together frequently ever since Tygon and Lady Andreas wedding.”

This brings a small, wry smiles to his face for the briefest of moments before he begins to speak, his green eyes alight and glimmering.

“I too have noticed that Ser. The two seem to be nearly inseparable. I’m not sure if you had noticed being so preoccupied in Lannisport but Joanna has spent nearly every waking hour in Lann’s Keep. I’d say the two are smitten with on another, and in my own eyes the match is a highly suitable one. The only problem is Lady Elleanor as far as I can tell. Now, it isn’t my business to tell a fellow lord how to run his castle, but I have been in talks with Lord Titus and he is in agreement with me that the two of them should be married as soon as possible. And at least in my family, when the patriarch of a family decides something, said decision is considered final. Lord Titus warned me of your presence and orders, and so I ask you Ser, if Joanna and Leroy were to wed…would you see an issue with such a thing? I have seen you fight, and I fear for the men who would be sent to stop you if you wished to put an end to such an arrangement, nor do I doubt you could forcibly take Joanna back to Ember Peak with knights as fearsome as those you are in command of. So I propose to you a deal of sorts Ser. You allow Joanna to stay in Lannisport, Lann’s Keep to be specific, and the details of the marriage can be hashed out between fathers, and in return, I will give you charge over my baseborn daughter, Jillianne Hill. What do you say Ser?”

He extends a hand out for you to shake, and you look at it for a moment as you consider the implications of what such a deal could mean for your position, child, family, and possibly even your life….

Biiiiiiig decision here guys. Big fork in the road so I'm going to let this one sit for a little and I'll answer any questions.

First of all. It is not up to us but our lady and we made a promised. Secondly, a proper lady in return for a baseborn is not a fair trade
>>
>>3668129
Shit. This of we agree to this the lady will be very pissed. But we said we would remain neutral to our lord. Man, if we do this and burn down the village I dont know how the lady will react. Fuck why couldn't we win the hand of a Reach lord, all those fat bastards do is feast and drink.

True it definitely isn't up to Mervyn, it's between Titus and Elleanor. But as for Jillianne for Joanna, it's not a "trade" per se, more of a favor granted to us.

>>3668148
You ain't wrong. Only question is who do we want to not piss off more, T or E? And who knows what could happen, we're going to visit Goldengrove after the baby is born.

>>3668170
It would be low balling if Mervyn was anything more than a household knight. But what he's offering is relatively fair considering Merv's station.

>>3668188
Not a bad way to phrase it. Theres still a way to get away with taking Jillianne to Ember Peak though if you guys want to. It'll be an approach and a promise kind of thing, plus a persuasion check.

I'm just going to go whip up some food, so I'll be back in about 20 minutes or so.

>>3668200
WE can make a promise to speak to our lady that the match is more suitable, would make her daughter happier, and help her accumulate more power. sparing her children from being exposed to tywin's wrath, but we cannot promise more.

>>3668224
That's well within the realm of possibility. Is this combined with >>3668175 how you guys would like to frame our refusal? ANything else you guys would like to add or ask?

--- Ser Mervyn’s Persuasion Test ---
Rolled: 12 vs DC: 14
Result: Test failed

You stare at the mans proffered hand, but the two of yours remain down. The exchange lasts for an uncomfortable moment before he withdraws his hand and promptly takes his own seat again.

“M’lord, if I may be honest, I believe your son is the better match, and by far the better man, but I swore an oath to my lady liege that I would ensure that her daughter was brought home to her, pure and unmarried and I do not trust Lord Titus to protect my position or life from Elleanors wrath. My own wife is heavily pregnant, and I do not plan to put my unborn child in a dangerous spot from the moment it’s born. If you are still willing to send your natural daughter with me to Ember Peak, I can swear to you, here and now, that I will do everything in my power to change Elleanors mind about the match.”

You then offer your own hand to the seated lord, but he looks at your hand with a contemptuous look and rings a small bell, and the door to the solar opens and the squire appears once again.

“Escort Ser Mervyn out. Our business is concluded here.”

And with that, you turn your back on Lord Tyler Lannister and make your way down the hall. You find your men dressed and ready to leave in the courtyard, and together you leave Lann’s Keep and make your way back to Lantell Manor. The conversations had run over and over in your head, and the simple dismissal had put you on edge. He had given up far to easily for your liking, and noblemen rarely gave up so easily in their schemes without having an ulterior motive. The time to do what you excelled at had come, and you wished to be rid of the city and politics.

You sat at a small table for the better part of the evening, making a list of your men of who could be relied on to do what you were about to ask of them. Every man you could get for such a job could be useful, and the men who viewed their honour and virtue to highly could be relied upon to guard Joanna while you were away. That presented another problem. She had indeed been spending a lot of time in the company of the Lannisters, and with the brazenness that they had asked you about the possibility of marriage she would need to be under guard day and night, but to what extent? Should you confine her to her chambers in Lantell Manor? Or assign her two guards at all times?

The candle began to sputter as it burned low and you retrieved another and set it alight as you began to make your final decisions for the evening…
>>
And it's time to make some plans and cover our asses here.

Mervyn is going to leave Lannisport to go do his dirty deeds, but the question remains of what to do with Joanna?

2 main choices would be for all of you to leave as a group, and the other is to leave her in Lantell Manor.

If you choose to leave her behind, do you guys want to lock her up, give her a guard or trust that Tygon can look after his own sister while you are away taking care of business?

Feel free to discuss, or ask questions. I'll put a vote up in 20 minutes for what we want to do.
>>
>>3668606
Lock her up. I do not trust her, the Lannisters or Tygon to be smart enough to keep her out of trouble. Get that traders girl as handmaiden and get her to spy and keep tabs on Joanna
>>
>>3668606
I'd say leave as a group, not trusting Tyler one fucking bit and We did have a promise to Elenor
>>
>>3668613
I agree.

Some things to consider will be she will know something is up when half of her guard dissapears, and should people come sniffing about what happened in the village, she might be able to put two and two together.

But leaving her behind puts her in your mens hands, and you'll have to trust they'll do their job to protect her and prevent the Lannisters from making their move while your away.

You put down your parchment, decisions made and head to the bed to sleep and are embraced by the dreamless dark of an exhausted mind.

--- 30/04/281 ---

You had awoken with purpose, so much in fact that when Tyrus entered your chamber with a plate to break your fast you ignore it completely, stating that you’d eat once you were on the road.

“We’re leaving Ser? Heading back to Ember Peak finally? Thank the Seven, I can’t stand the smell of this place.”

You let a small grimace take hold of your face as you shake your head and tell your squire that was work to be done before you returned home, but he would stay behind and stay with Tygon while you rode out to take care of Elleanors orders. Tyrus’ features snarl up into a mask of irritation and anger as you say this and he let’s you know what is on his mind.

“Fuck that Ser. You can’t leave me behind, I’m your squire. My place is by your side. How am I supposed to learn from you if I’m not with you. If you’re trying to leave me behind, it’s obviously something dangerous, so there will be fighting right?”

“Tyrus, it’s not that simple. This isn’t just going to be like our time in Hornvale. This is going to be….different.”

“And I don’t give two shits Ser. I want out of this city, and if you try to fucking leave me behind I’ll follow you the entire way.”

Stubborn, you thought. The boy was as stubborn as a mule and had the same cantankerous temper to match. But perhaps…the boy had already killed his first man, and the boy would have to learn that the world isn’t all knightly vows and honourable combat. He needed to learn that sometimes you had to get dirty to get a job done.

“You should take an ass for your sigil Tyrus. Seven know you act like one. Fine squire, I’ll take you, but first you must swear a vow. That no matter what you see or do, you must on no account tell anyone of what we do and where we were.”

Tyrus swears the oath willingly and rushes off to begin readying the horses and preparing for the journey himself as you find Ser Austin Osgrey and Ser Art talking near the main hall. Handing Ser Austin a piece of parchment on account of Ser Art couldn’t read, and he looks at you questioningly but with a nod he hurries off to enact your orders leaving you with Ser Art.
>>
“And where is Ser Austin off too?”

“I’m leaving Art, some work to be done but I need to make sure the Lady Joanna stays protected and out of the hands of the Lannisters. The talk I had with Lord Tyler has me on edge. She’s to be kept in her chambers day and night, with at least 2 men at her door at all times.”

All Ser Art has to say in response is that scheming ain’t no job for lowborn men like the two of you, but leaves it at that. The eldest man in the Loyal Reins and a loyal serjeant, you knew the man could be relied upon to do as he was ordered, but unlike you, he was someone who prided himself on his honour and vows. He wasn’t the kind of man who would take to the slaughter of innocent smallfolk, especially as a way to try and start a war and so he would have to stay behind.

After having ensured Joanna was safe behind closed doors, and getting an absolute earful of vitriol from the furious young woman, not to mention having to try and talk down Tygon from immediately releasing his twin which you only do by invoking his mothers name and from there he grudgingly lets it lie, and you promise that you would explain your actions in the coming days upon your return. Ser Tyrion was another who had been angered by your actions, likely taking offence to having his manor be used as a prison for someone who he had no intention of locking up. He was likely in bed with Lord Tyler and his brother Lord Titus, and the scowl he gave you as you rode out of his gates was one a great annoyance.

Your party of men had ridden almost to the main gates of the city in good time, the twins directing you as was their job, and the menace that these men exuded was enough to make way through even the busiest crowd. Your men were not wearing their plate, instead you’d had them suit up in brigandine, breastplates and hardened leather armour so as not to arouse suspicion during this raid, and in truth you all looked like a band of hedge knights and bandits, not the normally proud and honourable men of the Loyal Reins. You had almost made it out of the city when you heard a voice hailing your name…

“SER MERVYN! SER MERVYN WAIT!!”

You looked behind you and found Ser Cardyn Lantell riding hard to catch up with you, sweat pouring off of his brow as you wheeled your horse around to meet him sitting high in the saddle.
>>
“Ser Mervyn” he exclaims slightly out of breath. “I wish to accompany you. Looks to me that your gearing up for a fight, and I want to be a part of it.”

You look the man up and down. He could fight you knew that much, and the cruel smile he often wore told of a man with a mean streak that the men that currently rode with you all had. But he was an unknown beyond that…

“I highly doubt your father would approve of you riding under my command Ser”

“Oh to hell with my father. The “Knight” of Lantell Manor. More’n’like the Merchant of Lantell Manor, Ser. His greatest accomplishment in life is getting my sister Cerenna as a lady in waiting for Lady Annette Lannister. That and growing House Lantells coffers. My mother, Seven bless her, has more stomach for violence than my father does. Our duel was the first time I’ve fought with live steel in months. Gold rings more true in his heart than steel Ser and I cannot stand living there any longer. Let me join your men, and consider this my trial.”

He looks about and does a quick count of the number of men you had riding with you.

“I’d say you could probably use every man you can get no? I’ve my own horse, armour and weapons Ser. I shan’t burden you. On my honour Ser…”

Bit slow today, but that's to be expected. Looks like we're telling Cardyn no dice. Do you guys want to tell him a straight up no? Or perhaps send him back to Lantell Manor and have him keep an eye on Joanna? Any other ideas guys?
>>
>>3669642
We could give him the job of protecting our young wayward sister in law. I don't know if he'll let her out though. But fuck it he needs a job so sure. Give him an ego stroking line about how we need a man with his strong arm to protect her or somthing

And you did kinda just walk away and come back to the thread, if you posted a Twitter or something that would tell people your back. Or if you ran on a web site that had live timers, like anonkun.

Can we play up the importance of needing his highborn honour and manners to keep joanna safe/pure until we get back? Say our men are good however none are his equal in etiquette honour etc
>>
>>3669656
Lets go with that. That way we dont totally offend him
>>
>>3669649
He's kind of a dick wad and he wants out of his family, so he's looking to come to Ember Peak. And after getting pummeled by you, he wants to learn from Merv, so an ego stroking is something that would go over well.

>>3669656
Maybe not is "honour" per se but his family name ad position within Lantell Manor would make him feel important.

>>3669674
Perfect. We'll send him home then, but he's going to insist on coming with you to Ember Peak when whatever your "doing" is done.

“My men are more than up to the task Ser, and we do not need another sword. This is a delicate ordeal and if I’m honest, I don’t know you. If you wish to prove yourself, return to Lantell Manor and talk with Ser Art of the Pendric Hills. Tell him I’ve sent you to aid him, and ensure that nothing happens to my goodsister Joanna. When I return, if all is well, we can talk then about a position for you then.”

The young man, who resembled and was of an age with Tygon, looked at you with suspicious eyes and he tentatively agrees. Loyalty was worth more than a sword arm in a manner such as this, and ensuring Joanna remained secure was a task that would prove doubly useful. Not only did it test his loyalty, to see if he truly disliked serving under his father as he said, but it would give your men some extra clout within the manor and hopefully prevent any conflict coming from your orders.

“Alright Ser. I’ll do it, but there had better be a place for me at the end of all this. My father has mentioned there is war on the horizon for House Reynold…”

He gives you a hungry look, but whether it was hunger for violence, glory or cruelty you couldn’t quite make out and you nod your head and the two of you head your separate ways, and kick your horse into a trot and make for the gate.

--- 04/05/281 ---

Time had flown and your men had ridden as if the seven hells were on their heels and you had made excellent time. You would be at the village tomorrow if Lady Elleanors directions were correct and you didn’t doubt that they were. You had passed by more than a few small villages once you had come into Serret lands, but had found them quite unpatrolled, with only perhaps a dozen guards in each village. As you made camp, you and your men sat down around the fire to begin to plan this raid now that they knew what their actual task was. Ser Walder Erenford suggested riding into the village tomorrow by day and staying at the inn and getting the lay of the town during the day, waiting for darkness and then sacking it from the inside.

Ser Tristan the dornishman on the other hand suggest an honest raid in the dead of night. “Hit them hard. Hit them fast. All before they knew what was happening.” He said it with a smile and wink in a casual contempt for the human life you would all be ending on the morrow.

Meanwhile, Ser Tybalt Hill was of a mind to attack just before dawn, when most of the guards would be the groggiest and you could make an honest get away into the hills during the day and actually see where you were riding.

All of the plans had merit, but ultimately the decision fell to you…
>>
--- Dirty deeds, Done...how? ---

>Ser Walder Erenfords plan, infiltrate the inn and gain the measure of the town, and then attack at night. Potentially risky in case some people get away and they might recognize you, but you get to do some reconnaissance of the village

>Ser Tristan the Dornishmans plan, attack hard and fast at midnight. You’d be going in blind, but it would catch them all by surprise

>Ser Tybalt Hills plan, attack just before dawn. Some of the smallfolk might be awake, but the guards would be their groggiest right before the change of their shift making fighting easier

I can't be around for this to play out, but i want to propose something.

We need to make our squire understand that we did this on Eleanor's orders, that she wants to start a war to kill even more people, quicker. Make him think long and hard about what kind of monsters are around him. Mervyn and the knights here, the lord and lady and their conspirators.

The kid shouldn't be doing this shit and he shouldn't grow up thinking this is normal.

You look around at your men sitting around the fire before settling on Ser Tristan.

“Ser Tristan has the right of it. We’ll attack at night. Hard and fast. We can’t risk having anyone recognize us in the aftermath in case there are any … survivors. And I plan to be as far as we can into the hills by the time dawn creeps over the horizon. So get some sleep lads, because tomorrow night, well, you know whats coming.”

A few of your men grin, a few of them show no emotion at all. Ser Walder and Ser Tybalt each flip over a silver stag to Ser Tristan and he laughs casually before gazing into the fire, and you can see the flames dancing with the mirth in his dark eyes.

You leave your men to the fire and crawl into your bedroll and shut your eyes, listening to the sound of wind whistling through tall, brown grass and the beginning of springs insects coming to life, a gentle symphony of whistles and clicks and you soon fall into a deep sleep.

--- 05/05/281 ---

You were dressed for battle, mounted on Triumph and bearing a spear and a torch and looked over to Tyrus. The youth looked sick in the torchlight and when he makes eye contact with you, he swallows hard and nods his head, looking forward with blank eyes. The rest of your men were all prepared as well, and you gave Tyrus some advice before it all began.

“Men are only meat Tyrus. And you are a butcher. The songs might sing of knights saving maidens and chivalry, but all a knight really is…is a killer who has said some vows. Bury the emotions inside yourself, and learn to bury them deep. You don’t feel emotion when you eat a roast pig in Ember Peak do you? Of course not, and that pig was once alive and breathing. Men are no different”

Your mind flashed to the men and women you’ve killed, to the children as well. To the animals slaughtered and villages burned, and you follow your own advice and push it all to the very depths of your soul. You tighten the grip on the haft of your spear and you see Tyrus nod and a glaze come over his eyes, and all he manages to say in a dry whisper is “Aye Ser” and as a group you descended down the hill towards the village. There were a few scattered torches moving about the village and you saw in the moonlight the rough outline of perhaps 10 buildings alongside of the river, an inn, what looked to be a guard house at each end of the village and another single building slightly isolated further up the hill.

You approach a small wooden bridge and see two guards standing on the far side of it and when they see the approaching party, they bring their torches to bare and readied the clubs that they bore and call out at you asking “Who goes there?”. You stop at the far side of the bridge and look to either side of you and nod your head and bring your horse to a sudden gallop and the two men take a step backwards in shock. You see the whites of his eyes as you ride up on him and…

You ride hard and true and your spear finds itself planted through the mans chest, directly through his heart. His death scream cries out into the inky blackness of the night, and the blood that gushes forth from his wound looks almost silvery in the moonlight. Credit was owed to the man, he was not a coward. Even as he fell he lashed out with his club, catching you on the leg but the blow was the bite of a fly and you hardly noticed it with the adrenaline that pumped through you. Tyrus had handled the other guard well, taking his mace and swinging it downwards towards the other guards head and you hear the familiar clang of metal on metal followed by the collapse of a body that told you he had succeeded.

Your men were now over the bridge now and in the midst of the village. Torches in hand, they rode for the centre of the village and screams began to spring out from the houses as the populace began to realize what was happening. Tyrus stuck by you and together you rode to….

You rode to the house that sat apart from the village. Your men could handle the sacking of a small village and the screams were beginning to get louder and a soft glow was beginning to emanate from the houses as the thatch roofs began to burn. Whoever lived there could slip away into the dark if you gave them any longer and could potentially alert any Serret forces in the area, or give them information about what way you went after the slaughter if they had the stomach to watch from the darkness. You rode across the mud track that served from a main road and stabbed your spear into a woman who was crying hysterically and she grew silent as soon as the spear entered her back. You heard Tyrus yelling as ferociously as he could, trying to work himself into a frenzy as a watchman tried to gether his reins and pull him off his steed, but his mace shatters the mans hand and a hoof connects with his head causing him to fall to the ground in a slump.

As you approached, you see a low stone wall around the house, along with two pigs and a few goats, all bleating in panic at your approach. You dismount from Triumph and tie him up at what was clearly a very small stable, although it currently sat empty, and Tyrus follows you as you head for the door. The animals could wait, the people were the ones that mattered. You tried the door and found it locked and soon you heard Tyrus yelling for you. Cursing, you look over the low wall and spy three watchman that were running up the hill as fast as their legs would carry them.

“Tyrus, mount your horse and circle the house. If anyone tries to leave, kill them.”

He looks at you with serious eyes, the normally green reflecting into a hellish looking orange in the fire light as he remounts his horse quickly and begins to circle the house and prevent an escape. You in turn stroll towards the gate to face the three watchman who had come to defend it.

The first man who comes at you swings his club for the fences, charging and screaming “NO RIVAL” at the top of his lungs, and you contemptuously sneer at the man and turn his blow aside with the haft of your spear, turning the blade downwards toward the ground. He spits in your face and you pull up and in on the blade, hamstringing the man causing him to yell out and fall to the ground, whimpering about his leg. You silence the man as your spear plunges into his neck and you wipe away his spittle as you lean on your spear that resides in the dead man and stare at the other two who now faced you.

Eventually the two seem to gather enough courage to strike you, and together they attack as one. You manage to get your spear in the way of both of their attacks, but defending against two men you don’t manage to block them entirely or strike back. The first mans blow catches you in the ribs and you can hear the clink as your armour does its work, while the second glances you on the forearm. The blow stung, but it left what would likely be a small bruise but nothing more. The two men retreated slightly instead of pressing their advantage of numbers and you chuckle to yourself audibly, whirling your spear into an attacking position and prepare to go on the offensive.

The two quickly recover from their fear and mistake, and once again attack together. One goes left and one goes right and the attacks fall simultaneously. You grit your teeth and choose to defend the one against the right and though his blow rattles your grip on your spear as it connects against your wrist, you keep your grip tight and grunt through the pain. The second man who attacked your blindside got in a much better strike, a solid blow to your back and although your armour does it’s job preventing any serious injury, the blow was enough to knock some of the wind out of your chest and cause you to stumble slightly. As you glanced over your shoulder, you saw the man become over confident and raise his club high, aiming for your head and you twirled the ash spear in your hands and as he took a step in to close the distance, the cold steel tip of your spear found its way into the mans belly. You turned, dropping your spear although it stayed upright due to the depth of it being inside the red mess that was your enemies insides and threw a massive right hook towards the mans jaw, knocking out several teeth and leaving his mouth a bloody ruin. He lay mewling on the ground and screams as youwrench the spear out of him and you smell the unmistakable odour of shit hit your nostrils. Whether he had soiled himself or it was from the wound you could not tell, but it mattered not. You were used to this. Men shit themselves when they die.

The other man looks shaken, but during the fighting he has placed himself between you and the door of the house. He tightens his grip on his cudgel and makes the sign of the mother before he in turn charges at you.

He charges at you, fear and duty warring in his face and his lack of training shows, leaving his midsection wide open and undefended. Perhaps it was because of the relative peace in the Westerlands as why many garrisons and guards got lazy. After the Reyne-Tarbeck Rebellion most lords had done little in the way of fighting over border disputes and territory. Even bouts regarding honour often went directly to Casterly Rock to solve their problems, but Tywin Lannister had been away for a long time, and his brother was nowhere near as fearsome. These thoughts distract you momentarily before your spear stabbed upwards into the mans belly, you feel it ricochet off of the mans spine and burst out through his back in a spurt of the mans blood, you brace your feet and with both hands gripped firmly around the weapon impale him, lifting his feet off of the ground and screaming an incomprehensible curse at the man as the life leaves his eyes and you drop him unceremoniously as if he were a pile of dirty laundry at a well.

You pick up your spear, and kneel beside the man so as to wipe some of the blood off of the haft before standing once again and walking towards the door…

…and find it still locked. Tyrus had done his job and none had fled from the home. Jiggling the handle and leaning your weight against the door you find it to be solidly made, with a proper iron deadbolt for a lock no less. Leaning your spear against the side of the building, you brace yourself in the frame of the doorway and give a mighty kick just below the handle of the door and you can hear the metal components begin to give way. With another heave and another kick the lock gives way and you burst into the room to the sound of a woman screaming. Tyrus follows you into the room bearing a torch and you see her drop the corner of a large carpet to the ground and she rushes to a corner where she curiously picks up a longsword, cursing you in her terror.
>>
You look to Tyrus and see a look of disgust on his face. You knew why he felt that way, and truth be told, you may have once too before you had learned to ignore those feelings. Scruples were the luxury of the rich, and growing up as you had you’d never had the wealth to afford such morals. You give him a soft push behind you and you walk over to finish the deed. She clasped the sword in two hands and swung wildly, screaming how her knight would save her, avenge her, that Ser Samwell Serret wouldn’t allow his loves killer to get away with such a deed. You ignored her words, and blocked her blows with a manner so casual that you even had a time to stifle a yawn and you shake your head. This had gone on long enough. Suddenly coming into action, you spring forward and your spear finds its way in between the woman’s ribs and she falls very quiet as she collapses to the ground. You follow her eyes to the carpet that she had dropped, the last place she looked as life left her and walked over too it, ripping away the carpet and knocking over the table and chairs that sat atop and revealing a cellar of some kind. When you wrenched the cellar open, you found yourself staring at the inky blackness and felt a small amount of queasiness enter your stomach and instruct Tyrus to investigate what exactly was down there.

He gives you a look, but obeys your commands and with torch and mace descends into the darkness. It isn’t a minute before you hear a mournful “Ser” and Tyrus soon emerges with his mace tucked into his belt, baring a torch and a small child on his hip. Looking at her you guessed she couldn’t have been more than five years old, and she is weeping from fear and clutching at Tyrus with a surprising amount of strength from such a small girl.

“…Ser, what…what do we do?” The look on his face is one of horror and disgust as he realizes what is to be done.

“Give her to me.” You respond to him with a command and he tries to give her to you, but she screams and buries her face into your squires side. Eventually you rip her from his arms and order him to wait outside, which he does so. As he closes the door, you can hear him retch and imagine the sound that follows is him falling to his knees to empty his stomach and you look at the girl who is clearly terrified of you, struggling to get away, clawing and scratching at you as she weeps…

You held the girl in one arm and pulled up one of the fallen chairs before taking a seat. The girl struggles fiercely against your grasp and you are reminded of a time when you were once that small. Unbidden, one of your first memories springs into the forefront of your mind.

--- Twenty years ago ---

You were hidden inside the barn of the farm you were staying at. Your father had been hired on to help bring in the harvest, and as an insurance policy due to some recent troubles with a band of bandits. He’d been drinking with the farmer this evening, and so instead of playing with the other children you had went to hide from him, as you had learned what was coming.

Father had changed when your mother died, and the 6 months since had been the hardest of your young life. You’d been beaten so many times you’d lost count, and when he drank the beatings got more and more savage. He’d broken your wrist the first time and though it was nearly healed, you pulled it close to you in the dark as you heard the door of the farmhouse slam open and you heard him yelling your name.

“MERVYN!” MEEEERVVVYYYYYYYN!!!”

He was drunk. Perhaps the drunkest you’d ever heard him. Momma had never let him drink, and if he had an ale at the inn she’d scald him, but she was gone now. She got sick, and after he died, your poppa had taken you away from your home and the two of you had wandered across the land so he could find work. But he’d struggled to find any and as a result he took his frustration out on you. He said it was your fault that momma died, and your fault that he couldn’t find work. It was your fault that the two of you were hungry all the time.

The door to the barn slammed open and your father stumbled in, cursing under his breath and walking around the barn looking for you. You curled up into a ball underneath the hay that you had hidden yourself under and prayed. You prayed to the mother for her mercy like Septon Hayle had taught you to. You prayed to the warrior for strength so you could stand up for yourself. You prayed to the stranger for your mother. But like always, they never answered.

“Come ou’ ‘ere you fawkin’ bastard. I fawkin’ know yer in ‘ere.”
>>
Moments of silence were followed by the smashing of a clay cup against a post of one of the stables and you shiver and accidently allow a small whimper to come out from between your lips and you can hear your father walking over to the pile of hay, stumbling and nearly tripping over himself as he does so.

“AAAaah. Is tha’ some mice I hears? No, no I dun thin’ so.”

He walked over and you heard him pick something up and stagger over back to the hay bale and he stabs into it, grunting “Come out come out wherever you are” between each thrust. The thrusts were coming closer and you felt your nerve give way.

“Poppa? POPPA STOP! PLEASE!” you say as you unfurl from your ball and crawl out from underneath the hay and see your father standing there, using an old pitchfork to try and prevent himself from swaying. When you get out and stand he throws the pitchfork down and beckons you forwards with a finger and as soon as you were within range, the back of a hand lashed out at you and split your lip open and you fall to the ground and you can feel tears welling up in your eyes.

“Stan’ up boy.” Your father commands you. You could smell the reek of alcohol on his breath now, and you stood obediently before him, a child before a full grown man.

“Farmer say he ain’t got food fer two o’ us. Guna ‘ave to take off in the morn. You ‘ear that? We gots ta leave. AGAIN!!!”

He shouts the last word as he grabs you by the collar of your shirt and shakes you violently before throwing you down back into the hay. This time you don’t need to be told to stand up again and you do so, just waiting for the next blow.

“Abbs, abbs. I can’t do it. It’s ‘is fault yer gone. I know it is. If it wer’nt fer ‘im we coulda paid tha’ damn woods witch. But no. We ‘ad to save up for ‘is ‘prenticeship.”

He begins to weep and falls to his knees, calling out your mothers name and you stand there, unsure of whether to try and comfort your father or take the opportunity to run away, so you stand there. Stuck.
>>
Eventually he opens his eyes and finds you staring at him, a tear falling down your own cheek and he roars in a rage, standing quickly and picking you up by your neck and slamming you into one of the posts of the barn. All of a sudden, his grip tightens around your neck and you feel your mouth gasping uselessly for air, and your arms harmlessly pat away at his arms as he leans into you and puts all of his weight onto your throat. You swing your arms and your mouth gapes like a fish out of water, and black spots begin to cloud the edge of your vision. The dark continues to close in and your father continues to yell and scream at you, blaming you. It was your fault. All of it was your fault. And as the black consumes you completely, the last sensation you remember having was the feeling of falling as he threw your unconscious body to the floor.

You awoke on the ground the next morning, and even breathing was an agony. You coughed and touched your throat and found yourself in the worst, most pervasive pain you’d ever felt and you lay there for a moment before you heard your father call to you.

“Get up. We’re leaving. The mule needs to be saddled.” And he walks out of the barn leading his horse by the reins and leaving you to your work. And you rose, despite the pain. And you did saddled the pack mule, despite your shame. And you followed your father down the road, riding behind him. Despite your shame and fear. Because it was your duty…

--- 05/05/281 ---

You snap back to reality and find the girl had nearly gotten away from you, fighting and clawing at your forarms and hands as she fought to get away from you.

Your duty you think to yourself. You’d always done it. And with one hand you grip the girls shoulder in an iron grip that she cannot wriggle free from, and with your free hand you reach to your back and pull forth your dirk and you bring it to the childs neck and draw the blade across. She dies without so much as a scream, vocal cords severed and you wipe your blade free on her clothing before sheathing it again and you make for the door. Looking back at the two corpses, you walk through the threshold of the building and take a torch from Tyrus, walking the perimeter of the building lighting the thatch setting the building alight before returning to Triumph and mounting up. As you do so however, Tyrus interrupts you.

“S-ser, I..”

“Not now Tyrus. Later, but not now. I’ll tell you everything once this is done and we are away. Bury whatever it is you feel. All knights need to if they want to survive.”

You tell him this in a not unkindly way, and all he manages is a nod and together you remounted your steeds and rode down towards the opposite guard tower. There you found the twins battling with perhaps a dozen guards, and a third man you couldn’t identify lies face first in the dirt, tangled up and intertwined with his mangled horse.
>>
You rode into the fray, breaking up the watchman and Triumph reared and whinnied fiercely, biting and lashing out as you entered the fray once more…

It's part of the reason he can be so cold. He learned to put things away in his head, and compartmentalize negative emotions. But if they ever surface if Allysa ever weasels it out of him it's going to be a real pity party.

>>3670584
>>3670593

Needless to say though, those memories are back down where they belong in the depths of Merv's psyche, and he is M-A-D

I am pretty sure she would stop loving him if she ever found ourt the whole truth. She would still be his wife and all that. But i dont think she would ever truly love him.
>>
>>3670629
Oh if she found out about this? That would be very different conversation, and she would never look at him the same again. And would likely not trust Mervyn around their future children. A simple disciplining such as a spanking would likely send her over the edge.

But if she finds out about his childhood, that would just be a sad, pitiful comfort session as she consoles him and reminds him how he isn't his father.
>>
>>3670629
Yep, and knowing we're teaching it to her brother. Anons that think being 100% honest with your wife are retarded. There are things I'm sure she'd rather not know.
>>
>>3670639
Poor Tyrus. He's going to deal with his feeling in an entirely different way. Instead of getting cold like Merv, he's going to get mad. All the time.

But you arn't wrong, there are definitely things Allysa would not want to know.
>>
Agreed. We should be more open to her, but there are things that she must never know. I wouldn't be surprised if Tyrus gets distant with us over this, if not full hatred.

-Combat Round 5-
Ser Mervyn: 30 against Combat Defence: 8
Four Degrees of Success
16 damage – 5 = 11 Damage
Serret Watchman Health: 9 - 11 = -2
Result: Serret Watch Captain Dead

Serret Watch Captain : 14 against Combat Defence 7
2 Degree of Success
8 damage – 8 armour rating = 0 damage
Ser Mervyn Reynold’s Health: 12

You targeted the captain first. It was obvous who he was. The helm and breastplate made it clear, as did his constant shouting at the men who served under him. Using your horses mass to separate him from his men, you catch him on the back foot and he is nearly bowled over, but manages to regain his feet and swings his sword at you with all of his might, dropping the torch he carried to use both hands for his swing. The blow catches you in the chest but somehow, the brigandine you wore managed to prevent him from doing any serious damage. There was pain yes, and as you flexed you could feel your rib cage cracking as they often did when you stretched, but you had grown up with pain and were well used to it.

He had over committed himself into the blow, clearly trying to knock you off of your steed and you made him pay for it. Planting a boot into the mans face you feel the crunch of a nose breaking through the leather and as he falls, your spear tip finds his soft unprotected and you can hear the gurgle of a man choking on his own blood. Spinning Triumph around and giving him a kick in the flank you ride towards your next victim. A small man, more than likely still a boy looking for the prospect of an easy meal serving in the guard, and when he sees you approaching in his direction, he takes off at a run trying to escape your wrath, but it’s futile…

-Combat Round 6-
Ser Mervyn: 31 against Combat Defence: 6
Four Degrees of Success
16 damage – 3 = 13 Damage
Serret Watchman Health: 6 - 13 = -10
Result: Serret Watchman 4 Dead

He trips over his own feet in his fear and as he rights himself, the but of your spear knocks him back into the dirt and you lunge downwards and your spear passes through his leather jack like a knife through cheese, inflicting a mortal wound in the mans chest and you leave him there, crying out for his mother to come and hold him. You spy another man who had managed to pull Tyrus off of his steed and was standing over him with, berating the boy with every curse that he knew, but Tyrus notices you and the man follows his gaze and squares up, beckoning you forth in a challenge that said “come and take him”.
>>
-Combat Round 7-
Ser Mervyn: 29 against Combat Defence: 6
Four Degrees of Success
16 damage – 3 = 13 Damage
Serret Watchman Health: 6 - 13 = -10
Result: Serret Watchman 2 Dead

Serret Watchman 5: 4 against Combat Defence 7
Attack Failed

And come you did. The weight and momentum of your steed, combined with your natural skill at arms made for an incredibly deadly combination. The man attempts to swing his club for the head of your horse, but the beast is more ferocious than he expects and bowls into him knocking him back. Tyrus takes the opportunity to stick out a leg and trips the man as he stands up and rushes to get mounted back onto his own horse. The mans hands go up in a pleading display for mercy, but you had none to give. You slide off your saddle with a practiced ease and walk over to the man and drive your spear straight into the man’s eye and through the back of his skull. You hawk and spit onto his corpse, and remount, taking in your surroundings. Fire had taken hold of most of the buildings and the watchmen were all dead. You had lost a man, but all that was left were peasants and small folk so it troubled you little. You look over to Tyrus and say to him “Come Tyrus, let us see this farce over with.”

You rode back into the thick of the town, and with every stab a man fell. With every slash a woman was cut down. And soon enough the place reeked of smoke, shit and blood as you and your men regathered in the centre of the village and all of the screaming has subsided. The only sounds you can hear is the occasional stamp of a horses hoof and the crackle of fire. One building collapses in on itself as the fire takes hold, and you lead your men away from the slaughter. There is no victory cry or celebration, just silence as you left as came, slinking into the blackness. No doubt there would be soon men searching the hills and river for those who committed the atrocity, you would be back in Lannisport, or riding along the gold road escorting a noblewoman.

Alright well done guys. Did some bad shit and got some coin and a reveal into Mervyns past for your troubles. Needless to say, the Serrets will be furious and more trouble is brewing. I'm going to go get something to eat and run an erand, so feel free to ask any questions and what not that you guys might have. I'll be back in a bit to wrap up our time in Lannisport.
>>
>>3670892
We should leave Lannisport as quickly as possible before our men starts getting drunk on the coin and start talking.

Mervyn is not a very nice man. How does Tyrus view the whole thing. Does he regret demanding to come with us ?
>>
holy shit this is still around, nice.
>>
>>3670898
>We should leave Lannisport as quickly as possible before our men starts getting drunk on the coin and start talking.
backing this, we need to be a very effective dutiful individual. Also we need to tell Tyrus about this. He needs to know.
>>
>>3670898
>We should leave Lannisport as quickly as possible before our men starts getting drunk on the coin and start talking.
This.

“We and our men were on a discreet task for our House when we were ambushed by raiders.

After beating them back, we followed them to their camp and slaughtered them - losing a man in the process.”

This explains the loss, the blood and the loot.

Just ensure we drill this into our men and squire.
>>
Man. 2 great GoT quests one day. Shame they're both absolute fucking nightmares right now!
>>
We should do something about the dead man's horse too. Matching horses for the whole company... it's evidence, or at least could be.
>>
>>3670898
You arnt wrong. But I hope I showed part of the reason why today. His child was...unpleasant.

Looks like were going to leave Lannisport fucking pronto, which is a smart move.

As for your missing man (along with his horse (>>3671168))..Tybalt Hill can be buried or burned alongside the road, and you can order your men to stick with the story that you had a sensitive task to complete, got ambushed by bandits and he was killed. We followed them to their camp and dealt with them.

Are these acceptable ways to deal with the situation? Any other suggestions and what not? And we'll be able to have a conversation with Tyrus on the way back. He's currently in a bit of shock, so how you guys handle him will decide how he views Mervyn going forward, aside from him realizing Mervyn is a cold, cold mother fucker which is now obvious to him.
>>
>>3671194
Im fine with whatever. Lets just get our fancy new armor and head out. Ignore the complaining and whinning of Joanna
>>
>Titus will be mad at us for fucking over his marriage plot after paying for our new armor
>Elleanor will be mad at us for taking her son with us to murder a village
>Tyrus is all kinds of fucked up from seeing us kill a toddler like he was butchering a pig

We made some calculated moves, but oh boy do we suck at math.
>>
>>3671251
But we have free nice armor, tyrus is going to learn to suck it up, and Elleanor gets to release when you squire your son to somebody strangely they learn from them, her fault for squireing him to a knight she knew was a robber knight
>>
>>3671251
Elleanor has been a real bitch these past few threads. Give her the dick. That should fix things.

Welp at least he's not our son. We can fuck up on this one
>>
>>3671530
Sounds like perfectly legitimate noblewomen logic to me.

Anyhow, so to frame this up, how do you guys want to talk to Tyrus? I've got three main options here.

1. Inform him that you were under orders from his mother. That this was war and sometimes innocent people had to die.

2. Inform him the order was from Titus and Elleanor. That sometimes in order for a house to prosper, dark deeds needed doing.

3. Tell him it was just orders(no blame) and he needed to learn that chivalry has it's uses but it's rules sometimes needs to be broken

Also, I'll need a general tone for him as well

A. Comforting

B. Man to man (swap stories, etc)

C. Tough love/formal
>>
>>3671579
>3. Tell him it was just orders(no blame) and he needed to learn that chivalry has it's uses but it's rules sometimes needs to be broken
We don’t need to assign blame, it’s enough to know that service to one’s House sometimes requires ill deeds

>General tone
B - we are more like an uncle to him, not a brother or his father

>>
>>3671251
Eh. It's not that bad. Delaying the marriage plot isn't the same as completely derailing it. We never promised him to let the Lannisters take her when we'd already sworn to bring her back. He had that moonlight meeting with us over his desire to prevent any sort of rebellious plotting. I'm fine with helping him with that. Still, there's showing him favor in return for his and there's being deliberately incompetent. I'm more inclined to suggest the two suitors duel for her, like what was suggested previously. We can play favorites without failing at our job. Who knows? Maybe the craven will kill the Lannister with a cheap shot. I suppose we'd need to succeed on a Will check to keep our sides out of orbit.
Teaching a second son to handle dirty work and follow orders without question isn't so bad either.

--- Ser Mervyn Persuasion (Convince) Test ---
Rolled: 16 vs DC: 15
Result: One degree of success

You sigh heavily and let out a long breath. This was not an easy thing to explain to a sheltered young man. Someone who hadn’t grown up experiencing these types of things and saw the world through rose coloured glasses. Who believed being a knight was about chivalry and knightly vows, protecting the weak and the innocent. You scoff silently at yourself. The woes of being noble born you thought, but nonetheless you approached the conversation with the man that he was, not the boy.

“War is a…difficult thing Tyus. Sometimes the innocent…suffer. Orders are orders, and that how war was done. I’ve done many distasteful things in my life. Things I’m not proud of at all, and have been in all manner of dangerous situations, and yet I sit here, riding next to you, alive. Why? Because I obeyed my orders, and I wasn’t afraid to get my hands dirty. The sing songs of chivalry and honour to convince boys they want to be knights. If they told them the truth, well I doubt there would be many knights at all.”

The boy looks dismayed and you counsel him further in a gesture of kindness.

“That’s not to say you shouldn’t try to live by them when possible. There is a reason only half of the Reins came with us here, and those that were left in Lannisport are all good men, who value their honour highly and would balk at the deeds we were ordered to commit. But honour can get a man killed if he isn’t willing to drag it through the mud once in a while. Aspire to be a noble knight Tyrus. But just know that sometimes you’ll have to do things you don’t want to in order to obey your orders.”

He nods slowly ad you think for a moment he was satisfied but he continues.

“She was just a little girl Ser. She was scared…”
>>
The silence conveys his guilt. The crux of what had ailed him so. He himself had struck down innocent farmers, but the thought of aiding in the killing an innocent girl clearly ate at him. You couldn’t blame him for that.

“Aye Tyrus, she was. Believe me, I took no joy in that. I’m going to be a father soon, do you think I want to go around killing children? But orders are orders, and I was told to leave no survivors. Had she been young enough so as to not remember anything, I would’ve left her there, swaddled and safe to be found by a patrol, but she was old enough to speak. To remember a face. And so…”

You left the silence to say what he clearly did not want to hear.

“Remember what I told you Tyrus. You have to be able to deal with the guilt your feeling. Burying it deep down in the darkest part of you. It takes a man to be able to deal with those feelings, and you are more of a man than Tygon will likely ever be. You’re the second son. I expect you’ll lead the Loyal Reins after I’m gone. And it’ll be up to you to defend Ember Peak, and sometimes, when you’re looking out for her interests, you’ll have to do some foul acts in the dark. But take pride in it Tyrus, because without those who work in the dark, those in the light wouldn’t survive the night. You need not tell anyone this but I’m proud to have you as a squire Tyrus, you’ll be a knight yet, I swear it.”

The boy looks to you with sad eyes, and you leave him with his thoughts. He seemed to have taken it well, and the small smile he gave you when you told him he would be a knight someday told you he still clung to his dreams and ideals. It wasn’t a bad thing in truth, and perhaps he would never be the type of man that you were, you would still make sure that he was a capable fighter and a man other men would follow into battle. It was your duty, and you would see it done.
>>
>>3671830
It's great, isn't it?
>>3671841
>Burying it deep down in the darkest part of you.
If there comes a day when Merv snaps, it is going to be glorious.
>>
--- 11/05/281 ---
You arrived at Lannisport in good time, but had taken an extra day to get the story straight about how one of your men had fallen. You had been given orders to take care of some private matters of Lady Elleanor, and while ensuring those duties were being handled you had been ambushed by a group of bandits on the road. Ser Tybalt had been struck down by the initial onslaught of arrows and as a result you and your men had ridden after them, rooted them out and buried the man alongside the road. He was a bastard, and had no family to pay for a proper burial so there would be nobody to ask questions after him, and you rode through the gates of Lantell Manor, you are immediately beset upon by Ser Tyrion.

“YOU! WHAT KIND OF IDIOTIC, FOOLISH AND RIDICUOLOUS IDEAS DID YOU PUT IN MY SONS HEAD?!?”

You dismount off of your horse and explain you had no idea what he was talking about and Ser Tyrion barks out a short, angry laugh.

“Oh, no idea at all. I’m sure. Then perhaps you can explain why my son assaulted Ser Leroy Lannister inside my own FUCKING MANOR!!! He now sits in the dungeons of Lannisport, and Ser Leroy is currently being tended to by the maester from Casterly Rock itself. It’s a fanciful tale Leroy tells. He came to visit Joanna, as he has done many times since she has been in the city, but this time he found her under guard. A curious thing as I cannot remember issuing such an order but I’m sure that was only a small matter of miscommunication. Another curious thing was my own son was there guarding her door as well, and when Ser Leroy insisted on gaining access and that we had no right to keep a noblewoman locked up as she was, of which he was entirely correct by the way, my son told him to mind his own business and I quote “Fuck off”. When he was refused, he tried to force his way in and Cardyn attacked him. The son of the LORD OF LANNISPORT! MY SON STRUCK A FUCKING LANNISTER!!

Ser Tyrion has gone beet red in the face and is positively fuming. A vein on his forehead looks like it's about to burst and it takes the man over a minute to regain his composure so that he may speak in anything quieter beyond a bellow. Now tell me Ser…you wouldn’t have anything to do with this farce would you…?”

--- And cut ----

I'm going to end the thread here for the day. I'll be running again on Sunday at an as of yet undetermined time. I'll be around for questions and shit as usual for a bit. Not going to lie I laughed way to hard at a few of the comments from you guys today so well done lads! I hope you all enjoyed doing some truly despicable deeds, and seeing into Merv's childhood a little bit.

It really is.

>we're going to befriend Cardyn fucking Lantell

Fuck me we are the baddies.

Great thread Joe. This got dark, dark, dark. Really enjoyed seeing this side of the setting. Mervyn has seen some shit. Black Eagle of Ember Peak is fucking right.

Speaking of, have an updated coat of arms roll. Old Reynold arms, Lantells, Tygons, Merv's old arms, and Merv's current arms.

I'm now imagining Tyrus and Cardyn hanging out together and become a two man trouble multiplier.
>>

>Cardyn attacked him. The son of the LORD OF LANNISPORT! MY SON STRUCK A FUCKING LANNISTER!!
My fucking nigger
This is a man we need for the Reins
>>
>>3671851
Dumb fool. We better get him with us.

We literally just got an opening. Bring him in.

Hah, that's one way to pass a test.
>>
>>3671856
He wants to go where the fighting is. I've got him framed as not getting on with his brother or father, and since his sister is the only one he's close to, now that shes out of the manor he wants out. And seeing how deadly Mervyn is made him want to learn from him.

>>3671859
>>3671861
We'll have to get him out of prison first. And he might have to go through a trial as well. But there are a few ways around that. You guys have any ideas?

>>3671868
Glad you enjoyed Father! I believe I mentioned we were going to have to do some bad shit if we wanted to get anywhere, and I hope this thread delivered on that promise. Needless to say there is more to come!

Much obliged on the heraldry stuff, it looks amazing!! Thank you very much Ser.

>>3671870
If Tyrus can get over him embarrassing Tygon and knocking his chiclets out, I imagine that'll be a riot.

Lol I honestly didn't expect this reaction. I figured there would be more of an "oh great, here we go with more fucking more bullshit" not an "Oh GREAT!! HIRE HIM!!" kind of reaction but I stand corrected.

Mervyn is shitting up everywhere he goes. They all think he's a useful idiot but in fact he has no fucking idea what they are doing or how they actually expect him to deal with things and destroy all plans with his dumb lowborn touch

Ideas... well, going to talk to Tyler again makes the most sense. As neither he nor the Lantells know of our discussion and arrangement with Cardyn, we can act like we are doing the Lannisters, and especially the Lantells, a favor by whisking the black sheep off to Ember Peak to cool off. And we can ensure that any whispers of impropriety between noblemen and noblewomen from those sympathetic to our cause are quelled. I know Lannisters are dumb brutes, but even they should be able to see how this could go either way depending on the rumor mill. To REALLY convince, we could casually mention the possibility of us suggesting a duel for the Lady's hand and give our opinion on how such an event would resolve itself. Of course, a handmaiden would likely need to exchange hands for such favors.

I was just thinking that having him be exiled from Lannisport would be a fitting punishment. Then bring him toEmber Peak

Sounds like a pretty good strat to me
>>
Well damn. Here I was expecting you guys to just go full "Trial by Combat", but instead you guys come up with this genuinely clever plan that helps everyone save face. Is Mervyn learning how to play the game? Seven help us.

A few things to clear up though.

1. You guys wont be dealing directly with Lord Tyler because One. He doesnt normally deal with household knights. Your previous visit was an exception due to the topic of marriage. Two. Hes not your biggest fan right now. You'll be dealing with Ser Tyrion instead and through him you guys can throw your ideas out there.

2. Informing Ser Tyrion that you can whisper the idea of a duel in Elleanor and Titus' ear will definitely help him persuade in exchange for Cardyn getting off easier.

3. I can say with almost certainty that Tyler wont send his daughter away with you after this, but, Tyrion has a daughter who is currently a handmaiden in Lanns Keep. If you guys want to make that the price of taking Cardyn with you, that's a fairly reasonable demand, and the persuasion check wont be that difficult.

Damn fellas. I'm impressed you three. Anything else you guys want to throw out, suggest or ask? I'll be in and out before the thread on Sunday so feel free!!

Cool. True born or another bastard? Not that I really care too much. A bastard may even be less of a hassle at our status level.
>>

Nah. Mervyn just had one good idea. Such things do happen from time to time
>>
But when it comes to problems that are solved by hitting it hard, he's a genius.
>>

The Lannister trademark is basically just low cunning with a dash of brutality. Anyone who has lead the life he's lead should be more than capable of matching that on an intellectual level. It becomes a question of status and resources, both of which he is lacking.

You were sitting in Ser Tyrion’s solar, having been escorted to the room by two armed guards following the Knight of Lantell Manor and he was pacing back and forth, trodding on the fine myrish carpet as ranted and raged on how the entire situation.

“What gave you the idea to imprison my niece, your own good sister, in my manor? And to get my son involved in your blatant breach of protocol? All of it without my permission, while you went gallivanting about who knows where doing only gods know what. And now my son is imprisoned due to your actions and you, Ser, are going to help me amend this situation. You will come with me to Lann’s Keep and you will explain yourself to Lord Tyler as to why my son acted so foolishly and you will beg forgiveness from Tyler Lannister, and beg for leniency for my son. You will explain that this is all your doing and we will ensure Cardyn is released from prison and doesn’t lose a hand for this malarkey.

You sit quietly for a moment, thinking on the events that had led up to this situation. About Cardyn’s words and opinions of his father, and an idea starts to take hold in your mind.

“Ser…” you begin slowly. “Have you considered that perhaps banishing Cardyn would be an acceptable punishment to appease the Lord?”

Ser Tyrion bristles at this and gawks at you.

“I will not consign my son to being sent across the narrow sea and forced to live the life of a sellsword. Absolutely not. No.”

“I did not mean to send him across the sea. Maybe you could find somewhere outside of Lannisport that is much closer to home. Somewhere an uncle rules as Lord, and he could find position amongst the household cavalry?”

Ser Tyrion cautiously looks at you for a moment with a raised eye brow as he considers what you are suggesting, and for the first time during the conversation the flush of his face seemed to drain away slightly.

“Banished… I… this would be an acceptable punishment if I can convince Lord Tyler to agree to it. Yes, safe with family.”

“I can promise that he would have a place amongst the Loyal Reins, and I have no doubt Lord Titus would be pleased to have his nephew serving under him. Not to mention that it would give Tygon and Cardyn a chance to make up as it were. They’re of an age, and I think they could learn something from each other.”
>>
Tyrion hums and haws, but he eventually agrees. He informs you that you would accompany him on the morrow and attend court in Lanns Keep before noon. But before everything comes to a close, you sense an opportunity and jump on it.

“Ser Tyrion, Cardyn informs me you have a daughter.”

“Yes, I do. Cerenna. She attends Lady Lannister at the moment as a lady in waiting.”

“Well Ser, if you want Cardyn to have a place in Ember Peak, she will have to accompany him. There she can attend my own lady wife as a hand maiden. That is the price for my help Ser. If you refuse, you can damn well try and find your own way out of this situation. You could try and send him to Ember Peak regardless, but rest assured that his time there will not be easy Ser. He may not even survive the coming war.” The man blinks back shock at the thinly veiled threat but you continue. “Yes, I know you know about it. It would be a shame for such a noble son to fall in the coming days.”

--- Ser Mervyn’s Persuasion(Intimidate) Test
Rolled: 16 Vs DC: 15
Result: One Degree of Success

“Ser Mervyn you cannot expect me to pull my daughter from the Lady Lannisters service like this? Especially in light of whats happening right now? The political ramifications would be…telling.”

“I care not for political ramifications. Think of it as helping foster family relations. Or however you need to frame it to tell your lord, but that is my price. You can accept it, or I will take my men and leave for Ember Peak immediately.”

The man, who so resembles Titus it’s uncanny, sighs and his shoulders slump as he concedes defeat.

“Fine. Fine. I cannot fathom what you did to gain Titus’ favour, and I can see how you vex him so Ser. You are a cold man and once this business concludes, I expect you will leave and rest assured you will find no warm welcome should you return here. You had best ensure that Cardyn survives whatever Titus and Elleanor intend for you…”

You shake hands, and he attempts to crush your hand when the two of you shake, but he falls woefully short and in turn you can feel his fingers roll as you apply your own pressure. Cardyn wasn’t exaggerating when he said that his father was more suited to be a merchant than a knight. You leave the solar and head to your own chambers for the night, after speaking with Ser Art to ensure that none of the men were to get drunk until you had made it out of the city. The older man crosses his arms and shakes his head knowingly, before promising to ensure that your orders would be carried out. But as you go to leave he takes you grabs you by the arm.

“I dunno what you had to do Ser, but whatever the fuck this mess you got yourself in is, you ain’t have to do it. Don’t risk dragging your name through the mud for that bitch, or that pompous idiot. You’re one of the best fighters I’ve ever seen and you could be the greatest knight to come from the West in a generation. Don’t think I didn’t notice who you took with you on your “job”. Ser Walder? He’s as slippery as an eel and as cruel as a whipped dog. And Ser Tybalt? However the man died, he had no scruples to speak of and I’ll lose no sleep over his passing. But you and I Mervyn, we’re cut from the same cloth. We both came from little, and yet here we are. Don’t allow yourself to just do the highborns dirty work.”

You give Ser Art a flat face and acknowledge him honestly. The man spoke true about a lot of things, but he had the blessing of being free to go where he will. You were bound to this family now by marriage, and for better or worse you would do your part to ensure it prospered.

You had sat in attendance of the court being held by Lord Lannister, dressed in your most expensive clothes as you waited for the order of business to come to a head. All manner of things are brought up before the Lord of Lannisport, from family squabbles, trade contracts all the way to the possible construction of a new wharf. Eventually however, the simplicities of everyday rule are put aside and you see 4 guards escorting a fettered Cardyn before the court and he is forced down onto a small stool to the side of the court. It was obvious from the bruises and cut over his eye that he had taken a beating during his confinement but the look he wore on his face that they had not even come close to breaking him. He scowls out at the guards and Lord Tyler, and when Ser Leroy is brought out before the court you see the corners of Cardyn’s lips turn upwards into a smirk. The young heir was battered, and his left eye was a mess of green, yellow and purple bruising. It was quite likely that he’d had his cheek bone fractured by whatever Cardyn had done to him.

The matter is seen to in an efficient manner, and Lord Tyler begins by having Ser Leroy give his own account of events. The way the young heir tells it he found the noble lady imprisoned falsely inside the manor and when he demanded that she be set free to go where she will, he was vilely assaulted by Ser Cardyn who apparently battered him with his gauntleted hand without warning. For nearly an hour witnesses are called and accounts are given. To their credit, when your own knights are called to testify they answer as vaguely as possible and Ser Tyrion is finally called before the court and he looks over at you expectantly.

You stand and walk towards to Ser Tyrion and the two of you approach Lord Tylers seat and although he looks to you with a look of distaste his eyes soon pass you over and instead focus on Ser Tyrion and he gestures for the knight to speak.

“My lord. I come before you not to defend my son’s innocence, but instead to plea for mercy. Ser Mervyn Reynold and I have come up with what I hope will be a suitable enough punishment.”

Lord Tyler rubs his chin and sighs heavily before speaking.

“Ser Tyrion, your son assaulted his future liege. I would be well within my rights to have him hung from a gibbet and left to rot. I need not remind you that assaulting your liege is punishable by death.”

“I am well aware Ser. And it is as your faithful bannerman and friend that I ask you for leniency. As for my request, as you say, it would be unseemly for a man to serve his lord after having assaulted his person, and as such, I mean to ensure that Cardyn will never call Ser Leroy his liege. My lord, I ask that you allow my son to be banished from the great city of Lannisport. He will instead travel to, and serve House Reynold of Ember Peak.”

Lord Tyler carefully considers the proposal and he dwells on it as silence falls over the court. Eventually he breaks the silence and stares at you pointedly before asking you why you would take interest in the young Ser Cardyn’s fate.”

You look over at Cardyn sitting across from you. He’s remarkably unphased for someone who could potentially be on the short end of a rope, before looking across to Ser Tyrion who’s brow is covered with beads of sweat and is wringing his hands behind his back in an attempt to calm his nerves, and finally meeting Lord Tylers steely green gaze.

“My Lord, although I may not share blood with the Lantells, I am family with them by marriage. Ser Cardyn Lantell is my cousin, and I take care of my family my lord. My own unborn child will have blood ties to the family, and the Lord of Ember Peak was a Lantell by birth.

The lad has talent my lord, and I recently find myself a man short for my cavalry company. I see know reason why he could join them and find an outlet for his outbursts. Some men are meant for fighting, and if he stays in Lannisport I fear that he will find no way to find what he seeks other than common tavern brawls and other such incidents. I will make sure that he is tempered into the knight he can be. As I said my lord, I look after my family. And I plan on continuing looking after my family.

You say the last sentence with a firmness in your voice that would have made Allysa proud and the court had fallen so silent that a pin dropping could have been heard. Lord Tyler looks over to you with a scowl on his face and stands to make his announcement.

“Very well Ser Mervyn. On your head be it. Ser Cardyn Lantell, you are from this moment banished from my great city of Lannisport, on pain of death, until the end of your days. You shall be given the day to say your good byes to your family and retrieve your belongings. So declares Lord Tyler Lannister, Lord of Lannisport.”

The court comes alive with murmurs and gossip, and Cardyn is quickly unfettered and he flexes and rubs his wrists before walking over to you and shaking your hand whilst looking over at Ser Leroy.
>>
“The fucker had it coming. He left out the bit where he said to mindful of who my betters were.”

The young man spits onto the stone floor and you had to stifle a small chuckle. He was irascible and seemed to have a rather large chip on his shoulder, but he was a man you could use. Anyone willing to lay hands on their own lords son was someone that you knew would be willing to do whatever was needed to get the job done.

You see Ser Tyrion approach Lord Lannister for what you can assume is to tell him that his daughter would be leaving the Lannisters services which he waves aside quickly as the next matter is brought before the court, and you walk with Cardyn out of the hall discussing your next move.

“We’ll leave tonight. As soon as you are able. Joanna and Cerenna can follow tomorrow, escorted by my men. I don’t wish to test my luck by leaving on the morrow.”

Cardyns eyes widen at the mention of his sisters name. “Cerenna?” He asks clearly surprised. “Cerenna is coming with us?”

“Aye she is. She will be serving my wife as a handmaiden.”

Cardyn smiles what may have been the first genuine smile you’d seen from the man in your short time of knowing him.

“Good. I don’t know what my father was thinking sending her to serve these pompous pricks. She deserves better.”

It was obvious he loved his sister, even if his relations with the rest of his family were strained. Perhaps that was something that could be used to keep him in line once the two of them had arrived in Ember Peak and as you exited the castle, the sun shone down on you as you returned to Lantell Manor to prepare for your imminent departure.

--- 25/05/281 ---

The journey back to Ember Peak had taken a touch longer than you would have liked, but as you finally began to climb the final ascent past Headwaters and the Sleeping Lion Inn, you decided that you hadn’t made terrible time after all. Cardyn Lantell, Tyrus and yourself had ridden from Lannisport the day of the trial, riding for the better part of a day before coming to an Inn where you waited for the rest of your party to catch up with you. Tyrus had been withdrawn and sullen since the raid on the village, and so you had filled your time by speaking with Cardyn instead. The young man was a character to say the least. He was crude and arrogant, and he was clearly bitter at having been born the second son. The only member of his family he spoke kindly of was his younger sister, whom he seemed to carry a genuine affection for. He also had an insatiable appetite for combat and glory, and had insisted on sparring with you again once you had arrived at the inn. He had talent, although it hadn’t been tempered properly, and he displayed a lack of scruples as he was willing to try anything to gain the upper hand although you had seen through his underhanded tricks and proceeded to pummel him into the dirt. He had sparred with Tyrus afterwards, and Tyrus had attacked with a fearsome series of strikes using his mace as you had taught him, but he had let his fury get the better of him and Cardyn had used a crafty move to position his leg behind Tyrus and knock your young squire flat on his back. With his sword at Tyrus’ throat, the youth grit his teeth and knocked the blade away before regaining his feet and storming off.

The rest of the party had arrived two days later, and it was then that you met Cerenna Lantell, your wifes new handmaiden. She rode alongside Joanna, who gave you a scathing look which you promptly ignored, and the young lady introduced herself as polite and proper as your wife might have. She was young, perhaps no older than 14, and she carried herself with a sweet, demure dignity that seemed entirely at odds with her older brother. Tygon for his own part patiently waited in order to talk to you, and he had many questions that you answered accordingly depending on the question. When he asked about where you had disappeared to and why you had imprisoned Joanna the answers had been vague, telling him only that you were working under his mothers orders and nothing more. The three Reynold siblings had taken to riding together for most of the journey after that, and as such you had ridden mostly with your own men as your goodsiblings took whatever solace or comfort in each other that they could. It made little difference to you.
>>
As you had rode into Reynold land, you had noticed a few small patrols of bowmen, all equipped with what looked like the new bows you had negotiated for in Lannisport. When you had approached the Sleeping Lion, a group of perhaps 10 archers, along with their captain Black Feather Fred had approached you, and you waved on the rest of your party as you swund down off your horse and the man shook you firmly by the hand.

“I’lls be honest with ya Ser. I never did think you was tellin’ the truth when you said you was gunna get the lads n’ me new bows. I got ‘em patrollin’ the road day and night now, and we got target practice ery mornin’.

He leans in with a suspicious scowl and lowers his voice so as to not let his men overhear where the conversation is going.

“Me ‘n’ the lads are yours Ser. And I dunno if it matters or not, but we’ve ‘ad a few strange people come through the last fortnight or so. Askin’ some odd questions about where m’lords men are ‘n’ such. Told’m ain’t my place to say and sent ‘em packing, but jus’ thought you might want to know Ser.”

You thank the man and with another handshake continue to ride up the hill through to the pass where Ember Peak sat. You ride through the impressive oaken gate into the courtyard dug into the side of the mountain and soon enough Triumph is being taken care of in the stables and you strode into the courtyard once more and saw the Reynold children being welcomed by their parents warmly, and your own men greet their friends and families themselves.

Three votes for Titus and Elleanor. Works for me, Writing.

>>3688300
I know, but it just seems a bit weird to have two threads on the board at once you know?
>>
You walked over to where Titus and Elleanor were greeting their children, and your ears are bombarded by complaints from Joanna to both of her parents. Titus attempted to calm down his eldest daughter, while Elleanor listens to the complaints with a ever so slightly cocked head before looking over at you and subtly nods in your direction. You swore you saw the briefest glimpse of a smile curl upwards on her lips, but it’s gone before you could be sure. You patiently wait your turn to be addressed, and when it comes, Elleanor takes your arm and walks you away to her chambers and the two of you walk into Ember Peak together and once you were out of ear shot she asked what had happened with Joanna in a sharp and worried tone and you inform her dutifully.

“My lady, Joanna has taken a liking to the heir of Lannisport, and the two of them were together often. Lord Lannister asked if I would stay out of the matter if he were to wed Joanna and Leroy during their stay, to which I obviously declined. It was then that I went to complete my other “task” and I found myself between a rock and a hard place. So I placed her under lock and key, guarded by the remainder of the Reins and a Ser Cardyn Lantell, your nephew.”

The mention of her nephew curdles her impassive face slightly, but the expression relaxes once you continue.

“While I was away, Ser Leroy Lannister tried to free her. To marry her, or defend her honour I don’t know, and Ser Cardyn…dispatched the heir of Lannisport quite handily. When I returned, Ser Tyrion and I managed to come up with the idea to have Ser Cardyn banished rather than maimed or executed, and seeing as he served me loyally, I’ve taken him on with the Loyal Reins.”
>>
Elleanor’s handsome face manages to remain calm as she considered the events presented before her and together you round a corner and the conversation ceases for a moment until a passing servant disappears down a different hallway.

“And this other…task…it was completed yes?” she asks delicately.

“To the letter my Lady. It is done, and IT is no more.”

“Excellent. Now Ser, I don’t know if you know the importance of why sacking that particular village, but my spys tell me that Ser Samwell is apoplectic with rage and has already summoned his fathers banners. The death of his bastard daughter has driven him mad, and now we will prepare our own banners. Should they strike, we claim innocence. If you are questioned, we prepared our own troops after Serret troops were seen massing near our borders, and it will have been a good thing too, as evidenced by the war mongering and aggression displayed by them. And for what? Because they could not patrol their own lands and a village was attacked by bandits and they sought to use the incident to expand their holdings.”

You nod your head as you slowly begin to realize just how devious the plan was, and how cunning and dangerous Elleanor actually was.

“Once this war is won, I plan to promote you to Master at Arms here Ser Mervyn. I’m…pleased to see that you have remembered your loyalties. You had me reconsidering my faith in you with your displays with Titus before you left, but perhaps I’ve underestimated you…”

You walk in silence for a while as she begins to lead you back towards the main hall, where the rest of the party was sure to be feasting and celebrating being home. Word around the castle was that Andrea Reynold had missed her last moons blood, and talk of the heir of Ember Peak’s new heir was everywhere. The two of you came to the door and…

>Questions for Lady Elleanor?
Should we discuss the potential of a duel between the suitors for our goodsisters hand?
Despite the recent incident I still prefer Mr Lannister to the coward and uf Mr Lannister doesnt hold too much of a grudge then I think he'd be a better strategic match for the family and us personally.

Dont mention that to her that's more of a talking point to made the lord of the house happier

You stop her from entering the hall with a question.

“Excuse me my lady, but what will become of the land we take once we’ve won this war?”

She looks at you with a curious eye and takes her hand off of the door, turning to face you as she addresses your question.

“The lands to our south form a hilly valley, and the Serrets currently use the land to grow a considerable amount of grain. We will use that land to ensure that we are self sufficient when it comes to matters of food. No longer will we have to rely on the reach or the riverlands in order to feed ourselves.”

“And about becoming Master at Arms. What will my duties be exactly?”

“The Master at Arms serves a castle, and trains it’s noble sons and garrison in the arts of war. So little will change Ser, only that in addition to the Loyal Reins and Tyrus, you will be in charge of ensuring the garrison and any other noble children who reside here are trained properly. You will also be given charge of the armoury and will see to it that it remains stocked properly.”

That sounded like a task and a half considering you had seen the debilitated state of the armoury at present, but other than that the prestige would be well worth the additional work. Ser Devon Drake would likely loath serving under your command, but it mattered little. You knew about the heritage of Elyse and that was more than likely enough to ensure that the man would not make so much as a ripple.

“My lady, I noticed Allysa was not present to receive us. I trust that everything is okay?”

“Your wife is fine Ser, she is simply suffering from the joys of pregnancy. The symptoms are numerous, but needless to say she finds herself indisposed and so she remained in her chambers. Having given birth to six children, I can assure you that her swollen feet, fatigue and back pain are all perfectly normal.”

And with that she swings open the doors to the hall and leaves you behind, you find yourself longing for your wife and decide to go see her without another moment to spare. Only, was now the time to introduce Lady Cerenna to your wife?

You doubled back into the great hall and found Lady Cerenna sitting at a bench near the high table, politely laughing at a joke she was being told by her distant cousin Ser Terrence Lantell. You interrupt in a halfway polite manner and ask the lady if she would like to meet the woman that she would be serving here in Ember Peak, to which she graciously agrees begging Ser Terrences forgiveness as she gathers up her skirts and follows you as you lead the way to your chambers where your wife resided.

You walk in silence as the young girl keeps her tongue silent in your presence, and when you arrive to your chambers you bid Lady Cerenna to wait outside for just a moment as you knocked on the door and entered when you heard your lady wife say “Come in.”

She nearly screams from happiness when she sees you, and she is quick to get up from the bed despite the obvious pain it caused her and she began to waddle over towards you. It had been a month since you’d seen her last and her belly had grown considerably. The two of you embrace in a tight hug and she buries her face into your chest, nuzzling into you. For your own part, you lean down into her and your face is buried in the mane of curly red hair that smells faintly flowery. You pull away from her with both hands on her shoulders and the two of you embrace again with a long kiss before you pull away a final time.

“Ser, I forbid you from leaving me for so long ever again. And that is a command from both a noblewoman and your wife Ser.” She says with a girlish smile as she tries to stand as nobly as she was able.

You laugh and fall to a knee, promising to obey the lady’s commands, as was your duty, although you comment that you were surprised to see such a noblewoman unattended by a handmaiden and Allysa scoffs at you before swatting at your head playfully.

“Well it’s not fault of mine if my husband cannot find me someone to brush my hair.”

You stand and walk to the door, before opening it and ushering in Cerenna before introducing her properly.

“Lady Cerenna, may I introduce my lovely lady wife, Lady Allysa Reynold. Ally, this is your new handmaiden, Lady Cerenna Lantell.”

Cerenna curtsies to your wife while Allysa begs her forgiveness for not returning the courtesy on account of her pregnancy, and within minutes the two girls are gossiping and complimenting each other. Cerenna in particular compliments your wifes hair, commenting on the lustre of the colour and how thick the curly mane of locks was. After being thoroughly ignored for nearly 5 minutes, you make your way out of the chamber and leaving the women to their gossip as they looked like they were quickly becoming fast friends…

when we are inevitably confronted by titus for our role in this we shoukd point out that allowing his daughter to be kidnapped and wed even with his tacit approval makes him look weak. The incident can be resolutely blamed on Cardyn being a hothead, albeit a useful one. Mention the prospect of deuling for her hand, and that she will surely find the notion romantic, as well as allowing the lannister to salve his wounded pride in the matters of combat.

This is perfect. And when we bring it up, it will be our idea. Besides, Titus too must've seen Leroy's prowess during the melee, so the plan will ensure Titus gets his due. >>3689363
I'm actually not sure if I've given one. Elleanor is about 5'7 and 140 lbs. She has the classic Reynold features which are sea green eyes and curly red hair, and she is an severe and handsome looking woman at the age of 36. She wouldn't be described as beautfiful or pretty, because alot of her features are quite sharp, but nor would she be considered ugly because she very much looks like a noblewoman. I honestly kind of imagine Lena Headey( Cersei in the show), except as a curly headed ginger.

>>3689391
This is such a "Merv" plan it's unbelievable and I love it. "Why dont you just suggest a duel? Let the best man win?" It's class!

Alright I'm just going to go whip up a bite to eat and I'll start writing here

Alright, I am an Elleanor man through and through and will fight every anon to see her get her revenge (so long as we don't get rayne'd on by Tywin)!

Got to say breezy I loved how you twist Mervyn's attempts at persuasion throughout the story as totally sound bullying. Looking forward to Titus getting cowed into seeing our point. I mean, Mervyn can always present himself as Farman's champion, right?
>>
>>3689458
That kinda destroys the whole point of the duel if we fight for him, that's clear Elleanor favoritism
>>
>>3689391
Or go a step further and just suggest to Elleanor to have the craven coat his blade in poison. Basilisk venom should cover it. Even better, suggest for her to poison food in advance. In which case, I would suggest a (un)healthy dose of widow's blood. He has endurance 4, so 3 days in advance should leave him on death's door by the start of the fight.
>>
>>3689501
Shit, you're scary, anon!

>>3689495
It was a threat with which we wouldn't go through. Just something for Titus to make up his mind.
>>
>>3689501
Yep that sounds like a right bastatd thing to do. I love it and it covers our asses because who would think dumb old hedge knight capable of plotting
>>
>>3689501
But with windows blood he'll die pretty noticeably after the duel, seeing as he's a twenty year old man dieing of not pooping is pretty suspicious right after a hugely influential duel
>>
>>3689541
I guess I'm assuming Farman is clever enough to finish off his weakened opponent before it comes to that. If he knows of the plot then he may even have the boosted confidence he needs to provide a less than pathetic showing.
>>
>>3689568
Lost my wifi for a sec there... It's risky, but we honestly have nothing to lose from it. It's not like we will handle the poisoning arrangements ourselves.
>>
>>3689501
poisoning the man prior to the duel puts an enournous amount of risk on the house without a proper and believable scapegoat should it be discovered.

It also calls the maesters loyalties into question. Is he the sort of man to look the other way when his Lady liege asks for basilisk venom or widows blood? Will he risk his own life to swear that a Lannister of all people died a natural death? Will he remove signs of poisoning well enough that the lannister's own maester is satisfied?

>>3689419
Pointing out that he will look weak is likely to be doubly effective against Titus. No doubt there are all sorts of unwholesome rumors about his manliness and who has the larger cock in their marriage.

Westerosi are less than kind to men who are subservient to their wives, especially if it is an antagonistic subservience.

To say nothing of the fact that the parentage of the children is up in the air, and he likely knows it.
>>
>>3689598
actually, speaking of scapegoats, Cardyn proves useful once again!

poison a bit of his gauntlet and have him incite the lannister the day of the duel just prior. a small scrape or puncture mark is easy to miss.

plus Farmans weapons will be free of poison.

alternatively we could try to train Farman not to suck.
>>
You walked towards the hall where the Loyal Reins had their chambers and mess hall and find Ser Tybalt’s old quarters and give a knock on the door, to which Cardyn promptly opens. The blonde young knight brings you into the chamber and you notice it is already cleaned out and looks rather spartan, containing only the bare necessities such as a desk and a bed, but even the bed lacked for sheets or blankets as of the moment. Ser Cardyn addresses the concern on your face quickly…

“His shit wasn’t mine, so I had the servants get rid of it. Don’t have much to call mine anymore, but I figured Ember Peak can find some new bed sheets and what not? I never did spend much time in my room at the manor. I’d rather be out and about the yard training or out at a tavern drinking and dicing.”

The man definitely shared your penchant for dice, and the two of you had spent many an evening gambling away to pass the time, and Ser Cardyn gives you a shrewd look.

“Always a woman in a tavern as well. Perhaps I’ll have a go at that common girl you brought along.”

You’d completely forgotten about Holly, the wetnurse for once your child was born. You informed him that you had suspicions that she might already be taken with one of the Lannisport twins, but Cardyn only laughs.

“What Lannisport girl in her right mind would pass up the chance to bed a Lantell over some common man? I wager I have her on my cock before a fortnight Ser.”

All you can manage is a shake of your head and a curt laugh, and told him you cared not for what he did so long as it didn’t lead to blows between the Reins and Cardyn just laughs as the two of you head to the main hall together in order to join the feast.
>>
Titus had been thrilled to receive his niece and nephew, and was even happier to learn that they would be serving at Ember Peak in their respective capacities and had given them both high places of honour at the feast, just below your own bench was in turn just below the high table. Titus and Elleanor sat high, surveying over all while Tygon and Andrea sat next to them, feeding each other small morsels of food. Tygon had been overjoyed when he learned that Andrea might be with child, and the troubles of the road had washed away from as he came down from the high table to clap you on the shoulder and comment about how he was sure that as they grew up together your children would be the fastest friends. He walked about the hall, socializing with anyone and everyone, and he even spent a moment or two socializing with Cardyn. Even from your seat you could still manage to see the glint of gold in his smile, as the two front teeth had been replaced with two of solid gold. The man was young still and his charm was something fierce and he seemed to make friends as soon as he was given the opportunity to talk to them. Cardyn and him laughed fiercely together, likely about the story of Tygon’s golden smile, and the two embraced fondly.

As for yourself you sat next to your wife and as you looked to her, the effects of having a handmaiden were evident. Allysa’s hair was brushed and tied back, and she looked as beautiful as you had ever seen her. Her clothes had been mended and changed to accommodate the growing child in her belly, and although she was clearly uncomfortable based on the fact that she was constantly trying to stretch out her back and she had excused herself no less than three times during the course of the dinner to relieve herself, and Cerenna had accompanied her to help diligently. As she sat down again, she placed her hand over top of yours and squeezed gently, clearly happy to have her husband home, and she placed your hand on her stomach and you could feel the fierce little child kicking even through your wifes dress and you are suddenly reminded of a child struggling. A child struggling amidst the smells of fire and smoke, of blood and death.

And speaking towards poisoning Ser Leroy, theres no need to fear on that account. Elle will come to that conclusion on her own, although odds are it won't be something as sinister as Widows Blood, there are definitely ways to poison someone that can imitate things such as food poisoning or fevers. Things that could drastically weaken the young heir. And when Titus comes asking to delay the duel, I doubt Elleanor would be wiling on account of it was Titus' idea and it happens here or now, or not at all. Needless to say she is a very cunning woman.

Whew. Orlik Hill was a mean sumbitch. And poor baby Merv followed him around for 17 whole years.
>>
You blink your eyes for the shortest of moments and you feel Allysa’s hand rest on top of your own, her thumb caressing the broad knuckles of your hand and the smells of battle and death fade away to be replaced by those of a much more comforting nature. As you quell the memories and push them back into the deep parts of your psyche you smell roast pig, and hearty stews instead of burning buildings and blood. You smell the pleasant smoke of candles and the flowery fragrance of your wifes perfume instead of the odor of shit and death. And perhaps most importantly you keep your hand on Allysa’s stomach, feeling the child squirm and fight inside his mothers womb and Allysa smiles at you warmly.

“He grows more fierce everyday. Even mother agrees that a baby that bold can only be a boy. And ever since you left he has been especially restless.”

You yourself smile at the thought of having a son. You had dreamed of becoming a landed knight, and having lands and a title that you could pass on to a son of your own one day. And if your wife, and all the rest of the women for that matter, were right, you would soon have the son. Your empty hand clenches into a fist as you brace yourself for what it will take to acquire your ambitions, and if the slaughter of an innocent girl was worth a promotion to Master at Arms, your mind wandered as you ate at what the cost might be to be given a tower and lands of your own.

--- 06/06/281 ---

You awoke entwined with Allysa to a sudden and fierce knocking on your door and as you unentangle yourself from your wife, cover yourself and cross the room to open the door Tyrus nearly falls into you there was such an urgency to him.

“Ser…theres…theres been a sighting…The Serrets are marching…a week away…”

The boy was nearly out of breath, having run all the way across the castle and he tells you that a council of war has been called immediately and your presence was required.

You bid Tyrus enter the room as Allysa draws the blankets up and over herself as Tyrus helps you to dress properly for such a meeting, and instead of your every day clothing, you dress in a militaristic grey gambeson and burgundy trousers, and the two of you soon walk quickly towards the council chamber. He had stayed fairly distant from you, choosing to spend his free time with Tygon and his kitchen wench, but his training had taken on a fierceness that was unrivalled by anyone you’d ever seen. It was as if combat helped him to forget his guilt and he threw himself into it with a wild abandon. But today he seems even more silent than normal before he breaks the silence.
>>
“…Ser. I need help. I need…advice.”

“Well? Spit it out squire. I can’t help you if you don’t tell me whats wrong.”

He looks to the left and then to the right, before looking back over his shoulder.

“Well, you know how everyone is saying that Lady Andrea might be pregnant because she missed her moonsblood?”

You nod, ill liking where this conversation was going.

“Rose missed hers too. And I don’t know what to do. You were the only person I thought wouldn’t be wroth with me.”

The two of you walk on in silence for a moment before you stop and turn the boy to face you as you gave him your advice, crouching down to meet his gaze at eye level.

--- Ser Mervyn’s advice for Tyrus ---

>>3689864
Yeah absolutely, I think we should support him in his decision, he's our squire and we got his back
>>
You crossed your arms in front of him and give him a look that said what your mind was thinking, but you still spoke the words nonetheless.

“Well what did you think was going to happen? You aren’t a child Tyrus. You know what comes from sex.”

“I know Ser, but I didn’t think it would happen just like..that.” He snaps his fingers and shakes his head. “I don’t know what to do Ser. She said her mother wants to make her drink moon tea, but Rose told her no. She said she loves me and would gladly bear my child.”

As he says this, you can hear the happiness in his voice as he talks about her, and although you knew that such young love was an innocent thing that rarely survived contact with the real world, it was real to him in the here and now.

Ser I…I want to be with her. Maybe one day I can even marry her. I’m only a second son after all. And I’m ready. I’ll be the best father to our child that I can be. I’m only worried about what mother and father would say…”

This was an entirely uncharted new territory for young. The way you’d grown up, such pairings of young lovers were often just seen as a part of life, and they would often run off together, or leave for a new village where the two of them could live together to raise their new family. But Tyrus was a nobleman and that presented all manner of problems.

How would killing us do that? It would barely cost her anything. She'd lose a strong arm but that's about it
>>
You let out a sigh and perhaps a little patronizingly give Tyrus’ head a tussle, before extending out a hand and shaking it firmly, congratulating him on the fact that he was also going to be a father.

“We’ll take the girl to Headwaters. I’m sure your allowance will let you support the girl, and at least this way she’s out of your parents immediate vicinity when they find out about her. You can visit her there, and at least some of the gossip should die down a little bit.”

Tyrus looks up to you and in a surprising turn of events, hugs you for a moment before regathering his composure and straightening out his doublet.

“Sorry Ser. I-uh. Thank you Ser. I’ll tell Rose after this council.”

The two of you walk together once more and enter the chamber and you find yourself looking at a table of all of the Reynolds military captains, Maester Aethan, Tygon and Lord Titus and Lady Elleanor. Once you and Tyrus take your respective seats, and Lord Titus stands to address the table.

“Now that we have everyone here finally, we can begin. Maester Aethan has received a raven from Lord Serrett, declaring war on House Reynold.”

The stormlander stands and pulls forth the letter from his voluminous robes.

“He mentions the slaughter of one of his villages, and the death of his natural granddaughter, a “Samantha Hill”, as the reasons for the declaration. Hysterical accusations obviously, and this is more than likely nothing more than a cover to hide Lord Serrett’s inability to govern his own lands.”
>>
The gathered men rap their glasses and mugs on the table top and give their thoughts on the matter, and you notice how poised and dignified Elleanor sits during the matter. Titus stands once again, and Elleanor does as well standing beside her husband.

“If Serrett wants a war, we’ll damn well give him one. And my son, Tygon Reynold, shall be the man to serve Serrett his defeat.”

The small group cheers once more, with Elleanor and Titus smiling at their son proudly, and Tygon stands and begins to take control of the meeting.

“Thank you Father, Mother. Now, if I may turn all of your attentions to the map.” He gestures to the map pointing to a place on the map perhaps 2 days south along the Lesser Mander. “If this map is accurate, we should be able to march our men here with ample time. Seeing as we have no knowledge of their forces, we will use the river to guard our left flank, and the hills will guard the other. We will find a suitable location that will make flanking our right difficult. Ser Mervyn, you and your cavalry will be hidden away in the hills and upon a signal of three trumpet blasts, you will ride down from them and smash into the Serrett’s men. Ser Terrence, Ser Addison. The two of you will hold the line against these men until they are too committed to easily retreat. All the while your archers will reign down arrows on them as they approach Frederick. As for the garrison, half of them shall remain in Ember Peak, and the other half shall take up positions in Headwaters should the battle go south, or any scouts get deployed ahead.”

Black feather Fred nods his head at Tygon, before looking over to you as you consider the young lords plan. It was sound, although his willingness to march without first gaining the measure of his foe spoke of a young hubris and a lack of experience. You would send either the archers or your own Loyal Reins to scout ahead and at least gain the measure of their numbers.

--- Offer your advice? ---
>yay, volunteer your own cavalry to scout ahead and gain the sum of their numbers

>yay, volunteer the archers to scout ahead and gain the sum of their numbers

The archers are too inexperienced and scouting with the cavalry can also alert them of what is apparently Tygon's trump card. Let the lad have his plans.

Alright well kind of a three way split here. I'll wait for another 10 minutes and if theres no more votes I'll just roll for it. Only have about an hour before I need to leave for work.

Tygon over here throwing down battle plans again.

--- Ser Mervyn’s Persuasion (Convince) ---
Rolled: 14 vs DC: 12
Result: One Degree of Success

You look down at the map and the plan seems solid enough. Tygon may not have been much of a warrior but his mind was sharp and commanding men was different to fighting with them. Perhaps he would excel as a commander where he struggled as a swordsman, but he was still young and going into such a battle blind didn’t sit right.

“Tygon, if I may be so bold.” You interject as politely as you can manage. “How do you plan to gain the measure of the enemy if you don’t put forth any scouts? Your plan is sound, and while I appreciate the honour in being given the responsibility of being the hammer to smash our enemies, I would like to suggest sending my men and I into the hills, but also allowing us to scout ahead so we are not entering this battle blind.”

Tygon looks at you and then the map as he considers your proposition. His brow furrows and his glinting smile disappears as he begins to realize the gravity of his plan.

“I see where your concern comes from Ser, I do. But if we send the Loyal Reins out to scout, we may very well give away the element of surprise that will be the cavalry charge Ser. That’s why I’ve chosen this location for the battle” he says pointing at the map once again. “That way, it won’t matter if they outnumber us because our front will be small and our flanks protected.”

“Yes, my lord. The plan is sound. But what if the Serrett’s have their own cavalry and send them round through the hills? Or if they have some manner of war machines? Lady Elleanor has mentioned they are a house in decline, but there is a lot of risk in doing battle with an unknown enemy.”
>>
Tygon considers this and rubs his chin, hazel eyes fixed on the map as if it was the only thing that mattered in the room. A slight tinge of nervousness had come over his face, and he capitulates, saying “You bring a valid point Ser Mervyn. Take your men and ride ahead, but if possible ride at night and keep yourself hidden. If we can keep your men a surprise, I highly doubt their infantry or archers will be able to withstand you.”

“Aye, my lord. As you command.”

The rest of the council is made up of other aspects of the battle, of positions and numbers and responsibilities that takes up a large part of the early morning into the afternoon, and when it is finally finished, you stand and make for the door, but Lord Titus stops you before you can make it out of the room.

“Ser, I have a favour to ask of you” he calls out as he walks quickly to catch up to you and reaches out to shake your hand. As he does so, you feel him slip a small piece of parchment in your hand which you close in a fist and quickly put in your pocket, hoping nobody else notices.

“I was wondering Ser Mervyn, if you might allow Tyrus to squire for his father for the coming battle. It would certainly do my heart good to see my boy alongside me in the infantry, while Tygon commands from the rear. What do you say Ser? I shall give you my own squire for the battle, and on my honour Tyrus shall return to your patronage once the battle is over and done.”

--- Regarding Tyrus? ---

>Allow him to squire for his father, Lord Titus

>Decline, he was your responsibility

This is going to be my lost post as i have to get on my horse here. I might be able to do some posting tonight from work depending if it's a slow night but thats a big maybe as of right now. Thanks for playing guys.

I'll start a new thread on Friday, July 26th @ 3pm MST!

>Allow him to squire for his father, Lord Titus
Don't take his squire, suggest you'll take someone else that Mervyn or Elleanor chooses, though. Coming from anyone else this wouldn't register but I find it alarming he's moving his son away from us and attempting to replace him with someone who would be very pliable to his influence.
>Thanks for playing guys.
Thanks for running, it's been awesome.
>>
>>3690359
>Allow him to squire for his father, Lord Titus
He just invested a decent sum of gold into us and is pleased with us bringing some of his kin into our service. Unless he truly has gone full retard, this is probably just some harmless father-son bonding.

He may be angry with is but I dont think he's willing to kill his own calvary on the day of an important battle.
>>
>>3690359
>>Allow him to squire for his father, Lord Titus
We would rather not take his squire as he would not be familiar with our tactics and signals. he would be a hindrance.

but phrase it nicer
>>
Maybe Titus is trying to get his son close to him so he can tell him what Mervyn ran around doing while he was in Lannisport but he will keep quiet because we promised to help him with Rose ?

Hahaha I love how suspicious I've got you guys. Surely this is just a father wanting to bond with his son during his first proper battle no? Or maybe he's trying to figure out if Elleanor was up to something? Who knows.

Alright I'm just going to update this with a post, and than I'll throw this thread in the archive and do some simming for the upcoming battle. You guys are going to come across the first person who might genuinely give Merv a challenge in combat. Cant wait!

Maybe we will remind him how fruitlessly a certain woman struggled.
>>
You looked over to Tyrus before returning you attention back to Titus who is waiting expectantly.

“Of course my lord. Who am I to stand in the way of father and son fighting side by side. After all, what is more important than family? They should be free to look after one another. To watch each others backs my Lord.”

You lower your voice as you say this and lean into the man in a mildly menacing way and you hold the mans gaze. You had put two and two together and it was almost certain he'd tried to have you killed in Hornvale, and how quickly he'd changed his tune after Ser Herman had been dealt with was remarkable, and you planned to ensure that he knew that you knew. He manages to meet your gaze for a short time, before he looks away and claps his hands.

“Excellent Ser, and I thank you. Now, there is much to be done. Excuse me Ser.”

And with that, he leaves. Walking briskly out the door and out down the hallway and you go to follow but you hear Lady Elleanor break the silence as it was just the two of you now, asking what he attempted to slip into your hand without her seeing. You pulled the small piece of parchment out of the fold in your belt and display it in your hand. You walk over and hand her the paper and she takes it in her graceful hand and opens it up and you hear her utter a small laugh to herself.

“As if he thought himself clever enough to arrange a meeting with you without my knowledge. Attend my “Lord Husband” Ser. See what he feels is important enough to warrant such a clandestine conference in the moonlight. And before you leave to see the Serrett’s crushed, come and inform me what Lord Oaf has on his mind. Now go, see to your preparations Ser.”

And with that you found yourself walking out of stout doors with intent. War was on the horizon.

Okay, archiving the thread.

Well if we don't plan on taking him alive, certainly. But if we want to take prisoners maybe not a great idea to admit to "that"

>going to come across the first person who might genuinely give Merv a challenge in combat
Pfft, please. No one can handle the Black Eagle of Ember Peak

Yeah but even some hypothetical Black Knight (trademark)
