Your name is Sean Clayton, and frankly your life has been pretty shitty lately. Shitty enough that the most viable course of action is working for one of the many villains infesting Gotham City. It all started when:

> You were dishonorably discharged from the military, after an "incident" leaving several "allied" troops in coffins.

> An academic rival of yours fabricated evidence that you had been purposefully manipulating the results of your research, and were expelled from the University.

> You were in the vicinity of a vicious robbery turned double homicide, and Gotham's Finest needed a scapegoat. Nobody wants to hire an ex-con, especially from Blackgate.

Hello everyone, and welcome to Henchman Quest! As a warning, this is my first actual attempt at writing a quest, and this quest itself will likely be a oneshot unless it is pretty popular. Rules are pretty simple, you have 20 minutes to vote after I post an update, which I may extend if votes are slow to come in. Dice rolling with be Bo3, with crit successes, overriding critfails.

I hope you all enjoy my fledgling attempts.

You used to be one of the few and the proud, a United States Marine. You enlisted after graduating high school with Stars and Stripes in your eyes. And then reality kicked in. Deployed to some Middle Eastern hotspot and tasked with handholding the local militia.

Eventually, your unit was tasked with taking these wannabe soldiers on a training exercise that was interrupted by an insurgent ambush. Your unit was decimated, while curiously, your local trainees were nowhere to be found.

You weren't the only one who smelled a rat, so you gathered what remained of your brothers-in-arms, and set out to find answers. After some intensive "questioning" you discovered that there was a rat in the local militia informing on your activities.

You passed this information up the chain and were given the orders to take him in alive. You chose to avenge your fallen unit instead, and the rat and any who stood by him executed in a fell swoop.

Shaking these wayward thoughts from your head, you instead try to focus on your objective for the night.

You had:
> A meeting with a man interested in your skillset. You heard about him through a few of your old war buddies.

> A meeting at a seedy bar. You received a strange message last night, informing you of a potential job.

> A strange feeling that someone was watching you. This feeling had begun some days prior, and had only intensified over time. Tonight, it ends.

You were being trailed, you were almost certain of it. The big question is, who could it be? Ghosts from the past for revenge, the feds finally tracking you down, or maybe you've finally snapped like some many people already think you have.

No matter what, this ends tonight. You carefully adjust your holdout weapon, a Beretta 9mm, and prepare to leave your apartment. You live in a rough side of town, so even if you weren't suspicious of some spectre haunting you, it's best to be careful anyway.

As you leave your apartment, you finally catch a glimpse of your unwanted voyeur. The exhilaration and satisfaction of discovering that you are not in-fact a crazed madman jumping at the shadows is quickly extinguished when you realize what you are looking at.

Calling it for making nice with the undead. Writing

After quickly pinching yourself in order to ensure that this is indeed your life now, you decide to man up and face this apparition like a man. To be fair, it hasn't actually done anything to you, at least not yet. So you'll respond in kind and try to keep things cordial at least.

As you approach the ghost, its monocle swivels toward you in a manner that you would indicate as curious, if it you know, actually had eyeballs.

You decide to lead with a simple question.

"Who are you, what do you want, and why have you been following me?"

The spirit immediately breaks into a very loud and somehow English chuckle. You are doubly confused at how something with no head can laugh, and how language dialects impact even the undead.

The spirit eventually calms itself down, and faces you again.

"I'm terribly sorry, that was an unacceptably rude introduction. My name is James Craddock, but many refer to me by the moniker Gentleman Ghost, due to my impeccable habits and unfortunate condition. That answers your first question, and the second and the third both have the same answer. I am in need of a minder of sorts, someone who can work in my interests within the mortal realm.

I believe that you could be that person."

You decide to think of some questions for "Gentleman Ghost":

> Why have you chosen me?

You take a deep breath and face the now named Gentleman Ghost.

"I have two major concerns. Number 1, what would you have me doing? And Number 2, what exactly do I get out of it?"

"Your work for me will be rather straightforward. There are places that I am unable to step foot or influence due to my.... unique condition. That's where you come in. I will not lie, it may be rather dangerous, but I believe that you will enjoy your rewards.

In return for your faithful service, I will bestow you with boons of your choosing. This could be riches, magical artifacts that improve your martial might, among other things. But above all, I will grant you something that I believe you hunger for most of all; purpose. You are a man of action, and having no cause or reason to fight drives the strongest among men mad.

"There's no need to stand on circumstance when we're alone, feel free to call me Jack.

And speaking of names, now that we're officially collaborators, I believe it would be wise for you to adopt a cover name, for both your safety and mine. I shall show you to my base of operations, and while I give you the tour, feel free to puzzle out your new sobriquet.

As you take Gentle- Jack's hand, you feel an incredibly cold sensation, and you are suddenly outside of a dilapidated mansion. It looks weathered and crumbled by time, and there are tendrils of ivy constricting the outside walls.

"Welcome to my humble abode! As you can see, I haven't had a proper visitor for quite some time."

Jack proceeds to phase through the front door, before poking his head back out and apologizing for his poor manners. He then opens the front door with a flourish revealing a surprisingly cozy interior.

"Just because I'm dead doesn't mean I shouldn't enjoy my creature comforts, if you know what I mean! Unfortunately most of the rooms are left unoccupied, but I suppose that gives you more space to work with."

Jack guides you around the mansion and points out several rooms of interest, like the armory, living quarters, ("or should I say unliving quarters" he jokes) and most importantly, the inner sanctum.

Now before we get started in earnest, have you decided upon your nom de guerre?

You have decided to assume the name:

You inform Jack that you'll use the alias "Adjutant Tango."

"Marvelous choice, Sean, a perfect mix of elegance and martial might might just like myself!"

Jack's voice suddenly becomes much more serious.

"But now, it is time for business. I have a few leads that we can examine and choose our course from.

Jack places three folders on the table before you.

You find your eyes unconsciously drawn to the folder labeled:

I hope this doesn't involve sand. It's rough, coarse, and gets everywhere.
>>
>>3839378

You pick up and open the folder labeled "Claw of Horus."

"Ah, the Claw of Horus, an excellent place to start"

Jack begins to narrate details that are corroborated by the files inside of the folder.

"The Claw was created in 19th century Egypt, by Nabu the Wise. It's full powers are unknown, but hieroglyphics indicate that it is both incredibly powerful and built of a strange metal.

The most likely resting place of the Claw of Horus is a site in Central Egypt. The main problem is that it's currently being excavated by an outside party, though I'm not quite sure who.

Your mission is to infiltrate the dig site and determine if they have retrieved the Claw of Horus. If they have not, I want you to stymie their operation if possible, and proceed to obtain the Claw yourself.

Lethal force is authorized if necessary, depending upon the identity of the dig team.

A word to the wise, be mindful of where you step and what you touch, Egyptian curses can be a massive pain.

I'll let you rest and prepare your equipment. I'll teleport you to a safe distance outside the dig site tomorrow morning .

Any questions?"

> ???
>>
>>3839455
So what kind of people would you be okay with us using lethal force against?

How do I get back?

How do we keep in touch?

Watdo if I get cursed?

Can I pack some things before being sent into a desert or do you have supplies ready for me at a dead drop or something?

Anything or people, beings and such I should watch out for besides curses?
>>
>>3839455
Quick correction, 19th dynasty Egypt. Got my time messed up.
>>
>>3839455

"Excellent questions! Lethal force is fair game against ruffians and other riffraff, as well anything superpowered, be it good or evil. My only request is that keep civilians out of the line of fire, common courtesy and all.

Removing the relic from its resting place is likely to create a large magical backlash. You likely won't feel anything from it, but other magicians around the world will definitely feel it. At that point, the wards stopping me from gaining access myself will be depowered, so I can teleport in, grab you, and teleport back out.

I'm working on acquiring a device that will be useful for communication purposes, but I'm afraid that you'll be on your own. Consider it a test, if you will.

If you get cursed, it honestly depends on the curse. Most Egyptian curses debilitate over time, so we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

You'll have your choice of equipment from the armory, just don't ask where it's from.

There weren't very many Egyptian necromancers, so you probably won't have to worry about hostile undead, but they do exist.

I'll leave you to your preparations. Best of luck!"

(tbc)
>>
>>3839498

You walk into the armory Jack referenced earlier, only to find a room bursting at the seam with weapons from multiple time periods, several melee weapons, and a large variety of explosives and munitions.

>>3839511

After deciding upon the loadout for your first mission, you head to the living quarters Jack mentioned earlier and ponder the direction of your life a bit, before fading away into sleep.

You wake up the next morning and decide to get right down to brass tacks. You head to the armory with the intent to get kitted out and accomplish your first mission for your spectral patron.

As you gather your chosen weapons and munitions, you also take the opportunity to grab other useful pieces of kit like NVGs, binoculars, zip ties, flashlight, and other miscellaneous items that you were issued back in the military.

You also ensure that your holdout Beretta is still with you, and find a convenient place to store it in case your regular weaponry is confiscated or unavailable.

You equip yourself with a lightweight ballistic vest and helmet, complete with balaclava to both reduce the chance of sunburn and protect your identity.

After performing some last minute checks to verify that your equipment is fully operational, you’re as ready as you’ll ever be to plunder this ancient Egyptian tomb.

You head back to inform Jack that you are ready for the mission.

“Excellent to hear, Sean! I’ll be dropping you off a few miles away from the dig site. How you reach the tomb will be left up to you, but I have faith in your abilities. Good luck!”

With that, you take Jack’s outstretched hand and suddenly find yourself in the middle of the desert. You look around and notice tire tracks leading south.

After a brief trek, you reach the outskirts of the dig site. In the distance you can see several tents, as well as an excavator.

You decide to perform some recon from a distance.

You need to think fast. If you can’t find some way to distract these meatheads, you’re gonna get swarmed.

And then you notice several fuel canisters stacked next to one of the smaller tents.

And then you decide to do something that would make the Egyptian version of Smokey the Bear very, very unhappy.

You quickly haul the now-dead sentry next the canisters, affix the thermite grenade, and quickly back off before the inevitable boom caused by intensive flame meeting accelerant.

With luck, they’ll assume the sentry was smoking or something, and his scream for help was after he realized how badly he fucked up.

Your plan works magnificently, as virtually every guard you spotted earlier is now preoccupied with suppressing the conflagration threatening to engulf the camp.

Meanwhile, you decide to check out that big tent, you’ve come too far to back down now damn it.

Roll me some d100s to see what you find.

You reach the large tent unmolested, and a cursory examination reveals that it’s empty and safe for the plundering.

And boy do you find plunder.

This tent seems to be a command tent / armory of sorts

You can see several maps on the walls, with these coordinates labeled.

On one of the tables you find a number of explosives and their detonators, which you pocket. Presumably they were for cracking open parts of the tomb.

You also find a message from an individual named Mannheim. It reads:

“You’ve done good work in discovering the location of the Claw. As a token of my appreciation, I’ve sent you some special toys that demonstrate the perks of joining our operation.”

You notice a large crate with a crowbar nearby. It looks like it had been freshly delivered, and they hadn’t gotten around to opening it just quite yet.

You jimmy the crate open and the contents take your breath away. You have no clue what the fuck you’re looking at, but it’s the coolest goddamn thing you’ve ever seen.

On second thought, you quickly re-equip your ballistic vest and balaclava, so that you can hide your alien gear somewhat.

Before you leave, you make sure to snag the message containing the equipment crate; no reason to let them know what you’ve swiped.

The fire seems to be growing out of control, but thankfully, that isn’t your problem.

Most of the guards seem to have abandoned their posts to deal with the fire, so it doesn’t surprise you that you’re able to reach the ladder leading down to the tomb’s entrance without any interference.

As you climb down the ladder, an ominous feeling begins to wash over you, at first you barely notice it, but there is a tingling at the back of your mind.

YOU
SHOULD
NOT
BE
HERE

You shake off these wayward thoughts; you have a job to do.

You reach the bottom of the ladder and enter the tomb.

It’s pitch black inside, but it turns out that your new armor’s helmet has a built-in low light sensor.

You see what appear to be several body bags lying near the entrance, as well as a hallway branching three separate directions.

The walls are covered in pictograms depicting some kind of strange ritual. You can see some kind of bird-man falling from the sky, and his body being used to create some kind of gauntlet.

You:

You decide to take a closer look at those pictographs on the wall. After all, forewarned is forearmed, and judging from the number of body bags in this room, you need as much help as you can get.

You step closer to inspect the wall and the secrets it may hold, when you hear a strange voice call out to you.

“Well, well, well, what have we here?”

You immediately wheel around and search for the source of the voice, but see nobody.

“I’m going to be frank with you dear tomb robber, this ain’t exactly a nice place to be in.”

> “Who said that?”

“I’m over here genius.”

You’ve seen a lot of really weird stuff lately. You work for a British ghost who sent you tomb raiding, and in the process you stole alien tech from a bunch of wannabe mercenaries.

You ask Set your chosen questions.

“I suppose that I’ll just address them in order. First, I’m both Set and not Set. That may sound confusing, but I’ll explain. Basically, I had a priest loyal to me secretly chisel my likeness into the wall, and I imbued it with a bit of my power. For all intents and purposes, I am Set, just a version that’s been sealed in this place for an amount of time that I can no longer recall.

If I were you, I’d take the right path.

I’m actually not entirely sure about the Claw or Horus, to tell you the truth. I know that it’s some kind of special gauntlet that Horus created a long, long time ago, but he was very secretive about what exactly it did, or how it was forged. All I know is that it’s powerful enough for him to stash it in a place like this.

Now that I’ve answered all of your questions, it’s time for your side of the bargain. I happen to know that there is an additional artifact of Horus’ conveniently placed in the same room as the Claw of Horus. All I need from you, is to get rid of of that artifact for me. Take it with you, smash it, I don’t care what, just get rid of it.

In return, I’ll be your guide through this booby-trapped kill zone, and make sure that you don’t trigger any of the particularly nasty defenses.

So what do you say pal?

Are we in business?

> “Alright Set, I accept your offer. So…. uh…. what now?”

“Oh that’s easy, just hold still for a second.”

There’s a sudden and blinding flash of light and when you look back at the wall that previously contained Set’s picture, you notice that it’s now blank.

“I did promise to be your guide, and I certainly can’t do that from a wall, now could I?”

You look around to see if you spot Set in a different form, but are unable to spot him.

“Guess again buddy. Let’s just say that I’m a bit closer to home than I bet you were expecting.”

> “Please don’t tell me that you’re in my head and plan to work me like a fancy meatpuppet.”

“I wasn’t planning on the meatpuppet part, but yes, I am in fact renting space in your head.

It’s purely temporary, just until you uphold your side of the bargain. Don’t worry about the artifact I mentioned, I’ll let you know when the time comes.

Now what I’d heavily recommend is taking the left hallway.”

> “I thought you told me to take the right path?”

“I did. And it turns out the left path is the RIGHT path. I told you that I don’t lie.”

You are filled with an almost immediate sense of regret.

You head towards the stack of body bags, which upon closer review number at about a dozen.

They seem relatively recent, as there’s no dust or cobwebs or anything else that would suggest a long amount of time had passed.

“I remember those guys, I think they were part of the first expedition that came down here. They lost most of their guys to this particularly nasty curse that causes you to age exponentially. I’d highly advise keeping that body bag shut, that curse may have some nasty side effects that haven’t been triggered yet.

They seemed to have learned their lesson though, i.e, they mostly scampered off to the surface, and I haven’t seen any of them for quite a while. My guess is that they’re arguing over who gets to be the next schmuck dodging ancient curses.

Don’t worry pal. just follow my lead, and we’ll get through this just fine.”

Still feeling some residual doubt, you steel yourself and begin the long and treacherous journey down the left hallway.

As you make your way down the hallway, you remain on alert for any traps or curses that may be sprung upon you. You have a few close calls, but your natural reflexes and Set’s help allow you to avoid any damage.

“It’s your life pal, just don’t forget that I warned you.”

You give the room a cursory glance from outside its doorway, and the absence of any immediate threats gives you enough courage to enter the room and examine it further.

The room is mostly empty, apart from what appears to be some old and rotting furniture and what appears to be a book with some kind of bird symbol etched into it lying atop a stone pedestal in the center of the room.

“Hey kid, remember when I told you to move on without checking this room? I retract that statement. If I were you, I’d try to get it and vacate this room before something nasty happens.”

> “What makes this book in particular so valuable?”

“That ain’t just any book buddy, I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that it might be one of Thoth’s books. You see, Thoth wrote a few books over the centuries, which usually contained powerful spells or secrets of the gods. The other gods didn’t really like having their dirty laundry aired, so they pretty much strongarmed Thoth into forking over most of his work. My guess is that book in there is one of them. You suddenly have an idea, it probably won’t work, but it’s worth a shot at least.

You head back into the corridor where a thankfully crumbling wall provides you with ample ammunition to test your theory.

“What are you doing pal?”

As you begin tossing rocks into the room, you strike gold when one rock triggers a pressure plate that shoots several arrows at where you would’ve been standing.

“Nice work kid, but I’m pretty sure that pedestal is trapped too. Don’t think a rock will be able to solve that problem quite so handily.”

> “Hey Set, how durable would you say that Thoth’s books are?

“They’re pretty sturdy, Thoth was really big on longevity. Why?”

> “No reason.”

You state, as you throw a rock at the pedestal itself, causing it to rock slightly.

> “Hmmm”

It takes a couple of throws, but you manage to hit the pedestal hard enough and quick enough that the book falls to the floor.

It was a good thing you were so paranoid, because when the book fell off , you watched a strange glyph rise from the base of the pedestal, before dissipating entirely.

> "Huh. I can't believe that worked."

“Nice thinking kid, you managed to dodge the curse that the room was trapped with. From what I saw, looks like it was a nightmare curse.

That one’s particularly nasty, wouldn’t have had any immediate impact, but you do not want to know what it does when you fall asleep the first time.

The good thing about curses is that they fade pretty quickly after they’re triggered, so if you manage to dodge them, you don’t have to worry about exposure. Go collect your book, you earned it.”

You use the route that the rocks proved to be safe, quickly pick up the book, and pack it away for safe keeping.

Now that you’re finished exploring, it’s time to continue down the corridor in search of your primary objective.

As you traverse the corridor, you notice an increase in the complexity of the traps and curses you encounter.

Thankfully, Set is a quite literal godsend, and keeps you from unleashing whatever the hell a donkey curse is. He didn’t seem to want to talk about that one.

As you walk, you and Set talk about a variety of topics.

“This place? As far as I know, it’s a tomb for some big shot servant of Horus that kicked the bucket. Guess Horus thought it would be a good place to hide the Claw from yours truly. He’s not nearly as clever as he thinks he is though. He rolled out all the stops to keep the construction of this place secret, but all I had to do was “persuade” one of his priests to tell me where the construction was being done.

From there it was pretty simple, all I had to do was slip in an agent of mine who chiseled my likeness into a wall, did a brief ritual, and a little piece of me slips in to spy on them.”

> “It sounds like you’ve been down here a long time. Anything in particular that you miss?”

“I miss the sun, kid. I really, really do. For the longest time I haven’t been able to recall anything but the dull gray of these walls and the darkness. I’d give anything to get out of this place.”

> “Why haven’t you left then?”

“Would if I could, kid? See, Horus eventually figured out that somebody was spying on this place. I don’t know if he ever discovered it was me or not, but he had some artifact brought in that basically stops me from leaving.”

> “And that’s the artifact you want me to dispose of.”

“Bingo.”

It takes some time and effort but you finally manage to push the door open. While you’re still panting from the exercise, you take the opportunity to look around the room. More specifically, you notice the dozen or so weird statues that are positioned throughout the room.

You see a large metal gauntlet colored red and yellow resting upon a dais located on an elevated platform in the center of the room.

You also notice a large silver orb dangling from the ceiling via a rope.

This doesn’t look too bad, all you’ve gotta do is climb that platform and grab the gauntlet. Easy peasy.

Hang on a sec, did one of those statues just move?

"Kid, look out!"

OH FUCK

Will we see or hear about other heroes and villains often enough, even if they have a vague cameo?

Need more back story and world building. Feels like we jumped into everything quickly. You have a legitimate point about world building and backstory, and it is one that I wish I could go back and rectify. This is my very first time writing anything for /qst/, and I was afraid that I'd screw up chargen and the quest would die there.

I plan on addressing backstory issues soon, and hopefully in not such a hamhanded manner. If people are interested, I may write a brief interlude after particularly important events from the perspective of another group / character.

Thank you for your input. Do you have any further questions?

You narrowly dodge a curved sword wielded by what appears to be some kind of ancient, skeleton-monster thing. And because the universe and its various deities enjoy making your life even harder, the rest of the statues awaken, grab their weapons, and begin heading your way.

“There must have been some kind of trigger on the door to awaken them in case it ever got opened! Can’t believe I didn’t notice that.”

> “I appreciate the thought Set, but I’m a little busy right now! If you’ve got any ideas about fighting these things, it’s time to share it with the class!”

“Alright, alright, give me a second.”

> “Set, this is kinda time sensitive!”

“Jeez, keep your panties on. From what I can tell, these guys are magically animated by some kind of seal placed on their skull. Destroy the skull or the seal, and they should just become bags of bones again.

If I was you, I’d keep my distance and avoid letting them corner you.

Also, don’t really want to be “that guy”, but you know that big silver ball dangling from the ceiling? That’s what I need you to take care of.”

It’s now or never and you decide to:

You point your shiny new alien carbine in the closest skeleton warrior’s direction and pull the trigger.

A bright blue bolt of light travels from the barrel of your new best friend, straight through the shambling corpse’s head.

“That did it kid, keep shooting like that and you might just make it through this.”

You recall Set’s advice to avoid getting cornered, so you decide to fall back through the hallway to funnel them through a chokepoint and give yourself some breathing room.

One of the undead creatures gets in your personal bubble and attempts to strike……

You easily dodge a clumsy swing from some kind of … scimitar?

“It’s actually a khopesh.”

> “How nice.”

You think to yourself as you perform a tactical withdrawal back towards the doorway, while taking the opportunity to ventilate the skeleton who tried to filet you, as well as a couple of his buddies.

You head back a safe distance into the corridor, before taking up a firing position. Your unfortunate prey doesn’t stand a chance, their overall slow gait mixed with your accuracy and kickass carbine ensures that none of them even get close to you.

After performing a complimentary double tap to ensure their eternal rest, you head back into the room after ensuring that you are indeed safe.

“Fantastic work pal, couldn’t have done better myself! Well actually, I probably could’ve, but you know. You did good. For a mortal. Now all you’ve gotta do is deal with that orb for me. Remember, smash it, steal it, whatever you want.”

“Alright, I can wait a bit longer, just don’t do anything stupid like trying to cheat me.” Set adds in a somewhat surlier tone.

You begin slowly climbing the platform and manage to reach the peak without triggering any sort of mechanism or trap.

There it is. The Claw of Horus.

You spot your prize lying atop a small pillar located in the center of some kind of ritual circle.

> “You sense anything, Set?”

“Nah kid, guess Horus was so confident in his little warriors taking out anyone who got this far, he didn’t bother to add any other protections. Sloppy, to say the least.”

You take a deep breath. It’s now or never.

You step into the circle, and are pleasantly surprised that nothing attempts to murder / curse you.

You reach towards the Claw of Horus……

WHY HAS THIS HAPPENED

“SET! WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!”

“Like I’m anything other than a paragon of virtue. Kidding, kidding.

So the bad news is that you can’t really get rid of that gauntlet. Ever.”

> “WHAT!”

“Calm down kid, I’m not finished yet. Basically, really powerful magical artifacts have a kind of personality to them.”

> “What does that have to do with me?”

“I’m getting to that, jeez. From what I can tell, when you picked up that thing, it took a major liking to you. You must have done something pretty fucked up in the past in order to impress the spirit of rage that’s infused with that gauntlet.”

> “Spirit of rage? The hell is that?”

“When someone really powerful kicks the bucket, their spirit embodies the most important emotion to them. Looks like Horus infused a particularly vengeful spirit in this one, likely to boost its power.

Upon touching the gauntlet, it basically decided to judge you as worthy of bearing it. It’s pretty much bound to your soul now kid, and as far as I know, it’s permanent. At least, until you die or something.”

> “How am I supposed to function with this thing strapped to my arm forever?”

“That is an excellent segue to the good news. It’s always with you, but you don’t always have to be carrying it, if you know what I mean.”

> “I don’t follow.”

“I want you to concentrate really hard, okay kid? Try to imagine that the Claw isn’t on your arm anymore.”

You do as Set says, and close your eyes to imagine that the Claw is gone.

To your shock and amazement, when you reopen your eyes, the Claw is nowhere to be seen.

“Attaboy, now do it again, in the reverse.”

You close your eyes and reimagine the Claw appearing on your arm. Sure enough it appears right where it was before.

After banishing the Claw away for now, you thank Set for calming you down.

“Don’t mention it kid. Now, I hate to be rude, but we’ve got a bit of business to conclude.”

“Don’t worry kid, it’s me.”

The figure holds steps forward, sporting a broad trickster’s grin.

> “Set?”

“The one and only, kid.

Like I said, don’t panic. I’m just here to pass on a bit of information, and make you a little offer.

This juicy tidbit comes free of charge. Consider it a bonus of sorts. Wearing that Claw makes you a physical powerhouse. You’ll be able to run faster, hit way harder, lift heavy objects, blah blah blah. But you’re going to want to be careful. Whenever you have the Claw equipped, you’ll be more in tune with that rage spirit caged inside it. You’ll be more aggressive, a lot more hot headed, and way more brutal.

Now that we’ve covered the history lesson. It’s time for my offer. I like you kid. You’ve got a lot of potential and you followed through on an obligation you could’ve weaseled out of. Hell, you managed to actually get Horus’ Claw, as well as a treasure trove of other goodies.

You’ve done me some good turns, so I’ll be straight with you. I want you to take my mark. Basically what that means is that you and me will have a connection of sorts. Nothing invasive, it just means that we can communicate with each other, given the other’s consent. No matter the distance or dimension, you can call me, and vice versa. It’ll also give you limited access to some of my powers like sand and fire. I’d also be willing to give you some combat lessons sometime if you’re interested.

Don’t feel pressured to say yes. I give you my word that I’ll let you leave unhurt if you decline.

> “I’ll take your Mark.”

“Fantastic decision kid, I promise you aren’t going to regret this. As a heads up, this might sting a little.”

Set grabs your left arm and you suddenly feel a burning pain envelop your forearm. Thankfully, the pain passes as quickly as it came.

“There you go, looks pretty nice if I do say so myself. Looks like we might have some company soon, but don’t worry.

I’ll stay in touch.”

Set blinks out of existence, right before Gentleman Ghost teleports in front of you, with two old-timey flintlock pistols pointed in your direction.

“HALT! Where is my associate Adjutant Tango, you vile cur!? Answer me!”

> “Uhhh boss, it’s me. I just found some new gear is all.”

Gentleman Ghost immediately lowers his weapons.

“Oh dear, I appear to be the quite the fool. Do you have the Claw. It’s rather strange, I can sense vaguely that you have it, but I can’t see it.”

You decide to play it straight during your debriefing. Gentleman Ghost has been pretty good to you so far, and its not worth pissing off your employer, at least over this.

Gentleman Ghost re-appears carrying your discarded MP5.

“Here you go Sean, now let’s head inside and discuss your mission. Judging from the smoking wreckage of that camp, it’ll be quite the doozy.”

Jack guides you to a comfortably furnished parlor room, where he invites you to sit and deliver your report.

You start from the top with the more mundane part of your mission. The failed infiltration, the thermite distraction, searching the command tent and discovering your new gear, and the document referencing “Mannheim” , which your pass to Jack.

Then you explain your exploits with Set, how you forged a bargain that guided you safely through the perilous halls of the tomb, the many magical artifacts you gathered, your binding to the Claw, and your newfound bond with Set.

“Incredible work, Sean! Simply incredible. I was confident that you would succeed, but I didn’t think it would go this well. It’s even more remarkable that the Claw decided to soulbind itself to you. Don’t worry about that by the way, as long as I have the chance to study the Claw, I’ll have what I need.

Before we proceed, let’s take stock of your new equipment. You’ve got that remarkably snazzy armor and rifle, a genuine Book of Thoth, and I have my suspicions about that curious orb of yours. May I?”

Jack gestures towards the orb.

Seeing no reason to deny his request, you hand it to him.

As soon as Jack touches the orb, he recoils as if he has been burnt.

“Very interesting. My dear Sean, it appears that you’ve acquired an incredibly powerful soul trap.”

> “Soul trap?”

“Essentially, if you can acquire a bit of someone’s magical essence and place it in the soul trap, you can permanently bind them to a place of your choosing. This binding can be broken, like how you released Set, but not by magical means.

Speaking of Set, I’m not entirely happy that his loose upon the world once more, but considering that he is willing to help you, and by proxy me, I can accept it.

This lines up nicely, because I was planning on giving you some time off so that you can decompress from your mission.

Oh! I can’t believe I almost forgot to mention. I’ve gathered the materials necessary to imprint a sigil upon you that would make it possible for us to communicate at long distances, even through magical interference. Would you mind overmuch if we applied it now?”

(Alright folks, it’s time for some decisions)

> Would you like to accept Jack’s offer and stay at the manor?

>Timeskip
Depends. Right now sure but once we have more contacts I'd like to interact with them. I love every character so far and would love to meet more.
>Relocate
Sure, sounds like a good deal.
>Sigil
Also yes. GG has been nothing but good to us and having good communication on future missions where we might need a fast evac, or need to make a decision above our paygrade, it would be very useful.
>>
>>3863569
>> Would you prefer our time outside of missions to be a timeskip, or not?
For the moment, yeah. Not much we really have to do other than relax, recover, and keep in condition.
>> Would you like to accept Jack’s offer and stay at the manor?
Yes. No reason not to.
>> Do you consent to Jack placing a communication sigil on you?
Comms are generally useful, but there might be times we can't afford the distraction, or a way to track from one end to the other. Maybe if there's a way we can shut it off if needed? Close off the connection? I dont know.

Just a little skip.

Relocate after a week so we can get our things in order, including our weapons.

Ask more about the sigil, and if it does anything else other than communications. If it doe only that, then we consent.

You smile at Jack.

> “I’d be more than happy to relocate to the manor, Jack. Thank you for offering.

“Marvelous! And don’t worry, the sigil I have in mind is incredibly versatile. You can basically key someone in via their magical essence, and it acts a long range secure line. It’s all voluntary of course, you can decline a call at any time. And, as I mentioned, you can key others in, so other people can communicate as well, so long as you willingly accept some of their essence into the sigil.”

Jack’s voice suddenly turns serious.

“I wouldn’t judge if you had some reservations about strange magiks being etched on your body, but I assure you as both a host and a gentleman that my intentions are strictly honorable.”

You can’t really think of a reason to decline, so you give Jack the go-ahead to place the sigil on you.

“Capital! I’d like to place this on your chest, so if you don’t mind removing your armor……?”

You take off your helmet and chestpiece, and lay them carefully on a table.

“Now just hold still, this is very delicate work that can be ruined if you wriggle.”

Jack spends about 10 minutes carefully drawing a small symbol on your chest, and you just barely manage to keep still.

“Done! Now all I have to do is put a little of my essence into it..... and success.

Now, for a brief test.”

Gentleman Ghost flickers out of sight and a few seconds later you somehow know that he wishes to speak to you.

You accept the “call”, and suddenly hear Jack’s voice.

“Hellooooooo? Is this thing on?”

> “I can hear ya loud and clear Jack.”

“Excellent, I just popped over to Burma to make sure that we could get reception anywhere. On my way back.”

It’s been a crazy couple of days.

It honestly wasn’t as difficult to move as you thought it was. You were paranoid enough that most everything you had of value was ready to be transported in a moment. It wasn’t a lot, mostly just souvenirs of your time back in the Marines.

For once, you actually thanked Gotham for being such a shitty place to live. In Metropolis or Keystone City, if one of the tenants of an apartment complex disappeared with all their shit without notice, there would at least be an inquiry. Here, you wouldn’t be surprised if your landlord hadn’t already forgotten your name.

Your new digs are better in virtually every way and though it takes some time to acclimate to living with Jack, it’s been mostly enjoyable. He was even nice enough to help carry some of your stuff.

Alright, enough reminiscing. You need to focus, there is an extremely powerful alien weapon and a copious amount of practice targets that are lacking their daily dose of laser.

It takes some doing, but after some online searching, you hit paydirt. You find an article dated a few months ago about some gangland slaying. Pretty run of the mill stuff, especially in Gotham, but one part in particular catches your eye.

“Gotham PD has declined to comment at this time, but sources within the department have confirmed the victim as a longtime rival with suspected mob boss Bruno Mannheim.”

Bruno Mannheim. You’ve got a name, so let’s see where it takes you.

Bingo.

Mannheim himself made news several years ago, when he was arrested and put on trial for the executions of several rivals, but was ultimately found not guilty. Suspected ties to Intergang.

Intergang.

Fuck.

Now you’ve got answers, but these answers only lead to more questions. Why was Intergang hunting for magical artifacts in the desert? How did Mannheim get his hands on alien tech? Who told them where to look? Do they have any idea who raided their excavation?

You need to tell Jack. Right now

You activate your comms sigil and ping Jack. There’s a very tense minute of silence, before he thankfully responds.

“Greetings Sean, what would you like to discuss?”

> “Jack, we’ve got a problem. A potentially massive problem. I dig some digging on that “Mannheim” that those mercs in Egypt worked for. His name is Bruno Mannheim, and apparently he’s a bigshot in Intergang.”

“Do they know that either of us are involved?”

> “No, I kept my face covered the entire time.”

“In that case, I would wager that we are safe as houses, but I would still err on the side of caution. Stay alert Sean, I’ve never personally tangled with Intergang, but I’ve heard stories. They’re brutal Sean, and if things get hairy, you’re cleared to do whatever it takes.

On a more positive note, I managed to set a meeting up with the Executive. He’ll be meeting you tomorrow at noon at Caroline’s Diner, at the corner of 6th and Turner.”

> “Really, a diner? Would’ve expected something ritzier.”

“Yes well, he’s always been a man that enjoys defying expectations. I have to go now, remember to stay vigilant, Sean.”

> “You’ve got it Jack.”

Is there anything else you would like to do before your meeting with the Executive?

> ???

Valid points. To be honest, I've been prioritizing writing a half-decent story and figuring out the mechanics of QM'ing over in-depth character development. At this stage at least.

I've got some ideas though.

Since the opening post is usually a bit slow, I'll extend votes another 10 minutes.
>>
>>3865515
For clarification, what equipment are you thinking of?
>>
>>3865540
Well just taking a quick look at our normal equipment before focusing on the alien equipment. If we roll out with that unmodified we will be highly noticeable, and well the people we took out may very well take a personal grudge spoiling their excavation and tomb raiding. Unless we decide to wear regular stuff on top of the exotic armor we stole.

You’ve got some time to kill and you have weapons that could use some loving. You head to the armory, and decide to first inspect your more mundane pieces of equipment.

You check your ballistic vest for any sign of wear and tear, but it is thankfully unscathed. You field strip and clean your MP5, .44 Magnum, and holdout Beretta.

If Integang comes looking for a fight, you have no intention of letting them catch you with your pants down.

Next, you move on to the more recent and exciting acquisitions to the arsenal; your badass armor and carbine.

Your armor is composed of a surprisingly light metal you’ve never seen before. Despite the hectic events in Egypt it is still undamaged, not even showing any kind of superficial damage.

You briefly wonder if there is some way to recharge or actually perform maintenance on your alien carbine, but chances are it it’s got some kinda autoreplenisher. So long as you don’t get too trigger-happy and overheat it, there’ll be no problems.

A thought occurs. Your weapons and armor still sport the exact same paintjob from when you stole them. If anyone from Intergang, or worse, whoever’s supplying them, saw you using them, they could put two and two together.

In the interests of safety, you should attempt to change their appearance at least somewhat to disguise their origins.

The question is, what should they look like?

> What color(s) should your armor be? (feel free to post a picture for reference)

> What color(s) should your carbine be? (same as above)

> Would you like to try to actually mechanically tinker with your equipment? (If yes, select Carbine, Armor, or Both)

What default colors is the armor and weapon?

Are they smooth or and sleek in design or more bulky and angular?

I'm thinking all black and cover the Carbine in a Bakelite high performance plastic housing with some wires that wrap around the parts that get hot for cooling.

As for the suit, maybe just make Kevlar cloth to act as "camouflage covers" over the actual armor. Maybe put some layers of plastic and ceramics over top to make it look a bit more different from the original profile and physical outline.

Okay well we can just batman it up a little, with some combat synthetic ballistic nylon or Cordura cloth covers that have some hard plastic inserts at the knees, elbows, shins, shoulders and chest.

As for colors, I'm thinking black with red highlights or red trim.

You’ve settled on the modifications you wish to make, but now you have to find someone to do it.

Jack seems pretty well connected, might as well give him a ring and see if he has any ideas.

“Hello again, Sean. What’s new?”

> “Hey Jack, I’ve got a quick question for you. Do you know anybody trustworthy that can make some modifications to my alien gear? I’m thinking of changing up their design a little so that it’s harder to connect them to the mission in Egypt.”

“Excellent idea! I know just the man for the job. He is strictly neutral with all parties, and I’ve known him for a long time. Just leave a note detailing your design ideas with your gear, and I’ll drop it off with him while you’re at your meeting.”

> Great, thanks again Jack. How much do you think it’ll cost?”

“I’ll cover the cost this time, Sean. Consider it thanks for your diligent inquiries into Intergang. Goodbye for now.”

Jack’s a great boss.

You get a pen and paper, and begin detailing your planned modifications. Nothing too crazy.

> “I would like the carbine to be all black, and covered in a Bakelite high performance plastic housing, with some some wires wrapped around the parts that overheat. For the armor, I would like some Kevlar cloth over top of the original armor, as well as a layer of plastic and ceramics to change its profile. In addition, I would like some synthetic ballistic nylon covers with hard plastic inserts at the knees, elbows, shins, shoulders, and chest. Lastly, I would like the armor to be black, with red highlights.”

Perfect. Hopefully this’ll do the trick. Now it’s time to get some shut-eye for your big day tomorrow.
