The distant whirring of machinery is the first sound to break through the haze of digital silence. Followed by this is cold and damp air sticking to your skin, making goosebumps break out across your skin even through your jacket. The ground beneath your feet rumbles, and as your eyes begin to open, total darkness greets you.

“You there, Wolf?” A familiar, uneasy voice comes from somewhere behind you. Taking note of the fact that it seems to echo around you, your hand immediately darts down to pull the revolver from its holster.

“Yeah. Let’s get moving.”

The year is 2030, and competitive gaming has taken the world by storm. Through good and bad times, this is a world that you, Wolfgang O’Neal, are living in. After a request by your closest friend, an interesting match between an enemy and an annoyance, and a quick gallivant through the marketplace – you find yourself on the fields of Warscape once more in a battle for your friend’s pride.

“I think we’re on water.” Cinder murmurs, her body shifting as you hear her draw one of her shotguns. “Can you hear that?”

You close your eyes, despite the action being unnecessary, and try to listen past the rumbling of mechanical parts. With a little effort, you can make out the barest hint of water moving against metal, immediately connecting the dots to the slight sway of the ground under your feet.

“We’re in a boat.” You reply, gripping the revolver tight enough to pop two of your knuckles.

Taking a moment to internalize this revelation, you silently take note of your inventory. Your newly acquired L85A3 is slung across your torso, your shotgun strapped to your leg, and your revolver’s holster is held on the opposite leg. Unlike before, you feel a weight around your waist that hadn’t been there before logging in – your bag is already on your person this time around.

This leads you to infer that the match has already begun.

Looks like we aren’t any wasting time, huh?

>Do what you do best – scrounge around for anything useful, if there’s anything to be found. What’s the harm in grabbing more shit to help you win? [This will require a roll.]
>Close your eyes again and try to listen for anything else that’s outside of this area – you determined that you’re on a boat, so can you find anything else interesting? [This will require a HIGH roll.]

Wanna loot but would be better if we can actually see the damn place. I doubt it'll be a problem in the beginning room, haven't been put near our opponents thus far. And if we attach it to our revolver maybe we'll be able to pull off our old move of turning it on right on Edit's face.

Moving your free hand into your inventory bag, you pull out the cubed flashlight that’s been with you since day one. After a moment of fumbling, you snap it onto the rail of your revolver and immediately power it up, the action causing you to wince as light fills the chamber.

The room around you seems to be made of purely metal, and very old metal at that. Signs of corrosion are everywhere, yet nothing seems to have breached through the surface, despite the severity of the rust in certain places. It fills you with a sense of unease, and you grip your sidearm tighter as you turn to face your partner.

Cinder seems to be remarkably calmer than you, her eyes scanning the floor of the room with eagle-like proficiency. You eye a small wooden box at the far back corner, seemingly untouched from this perspective. After a few moments of this, the girl looks to you with a serious expression.

“We’re in a shipping container.” Cinder points behind you, drawing out her other shotgun. The things are short-barreled, but you’re very aware of how much stopping power they have – as well as that, you can see that she’s already strapped her rocket oblong to the top of one.

Turning to face the direction she’s pointing at, you notice a very large red door that appears to be incredibly secured. There are two unlatched and thick metal bars that are parallel to each other, showing no sign of the decay that the rest of the container appears to have. You can’t recall seeing one of these things so secure – isn’t that stuff usually supposed to be on the outside?

“Well, looks like we’re mail-ordered.” You crack a bit of a joke, walking towards the door and spinning your revolver as you do. “Should we get started?”

“Yeah.” She replies, but you notice her eyes darting back to the box.

As tempting as looting sounds, you’re aware that finding your location on this ship is a strong priority…although you can’t recall an instance where an enemy has spawned very close to you. With Edit having haste in his inventory as far as you know, though, even seconds could be vital.

How do you proceed?

>Signal for her to move up to the door with you – looting’s nice, but learning positioning is even nicer. It’s wise not to stay in one place for too long.
>Walk towards the door and tell her to go loot the box while you do – you’ll secure the area while she gets more firepower, you’re versatile enough to handle anything unexpected.
>Tell her to secure whatever lies beyond while you open the box – she’s much more suited to dodging unexpected things, and you’ll be able to provide cover fire from the container if necessary. [This will require a loot roll.]

Haste shouldn't be a problem, unless Sky also has one. I imagine their preferred combo would be to have Sky set up for covering fire before Edit actually tries anything directly.

(Sorry for the wait, got lunch and some packages arrived for me!)

“Cinder, you’re much more used to being mobile than I am. You go and check out our surroundings, and I’ll crack open that box and give you cover if necessary.”

You begin to walk past her halfway through saying this, eyes glued to the unassuming box in the back corner of the crate. It seems to have a label slapped to it, as humorously expected from something inside a shipping container.

>FRAGILE!

Huh, that isn’t suspicious in the slightest. Crouching down in order to open the box, you hear the tapping of footsteps against metal as Cinder makes her way over to the door.

“Gotcha, chief.” She says to you, still keeping her voice low as she reaches out to open the thick doors. "I’ll radio you if anything suspicious is amok.”

“…I don’t have a radio on me, though.”

“Sure you do – check your ear!” Cinder says with a barely hidden smile, tucking one of her guns between her arm and side as she opens the doors. They creak momentarily, and you only get a brief flash of outside light before she disappears around the corner, shutting the door behind her.

Your hand immediately flies up to your ear, and sure enough, your comrade is correct. An earpiece is secured there, small enough that you didn’t even notice it sitting there. You pluck it out and give it a quick look – it’s a small sphere with a very tiny extension sticking out of the middle.

How quaint. You put it back in and open up the wooden box.

The interior is far smaller than the outside would suggest, making you sigh a little bit. You immediately spot two healing patches held against one of the sides by the handle of a knife, and you quickly snatch them up. You might split them with Cinder, you might not, depends on how you feel at the time!

With those extracted from the box, your vision falls to the other item held within. At first glance it would appear to be an ordinary knife, but you immediately spot some oddities about it. For one, the blade is a stunning cobalt blue, and the handle seems to be cylindrical rather than what you would normally find. Reaching in to pick it up, you also notice that the side facing downwards has a button placed just below the blade.

“Interesting.” You murmur to yourself, standing from your crouched position. As you begin to walk towards the entrance of the container, you receive word from the communicator.

“Watch your step on the way out, Wolf.” Cinder’s voice seems strained, and your brow furrows in concern.

“Why’s that?”

“This room has a security system. There are turrets.”

“…on a boat?”

“Beats me, it’s randomly generated! We’re inside a vault – door’s unlocked and I made my way out, now it’s your turn. No sign of Edit and Sky either.”

Oh, joy. Looks like you’ll have to hotfoot it through a room of turrets!

Lovely.

A few thoughts occur to you as you take position against the doors of the shipping container, sliding your revolver back into its holster. For one, you’re aware that sneaking through a room full of turrets would be easier if you had both hands. For two, you’re wondering why the fuck you didn’t hear the turrets fire. It’s either that they’re incredibly silent or Cinder managed to get through them all without issue.

You cast your eyes over to the box sequestered against the back wall of the container. You briefly consider donning the article and trying to stealth through the room that way, but you realize that the idea is very stupid, and so you stop thinking about it and focus on the immediate future in front of you.

Pushing the door open as slowly as possible, you finally get a glimpse of natural light rather than the LED of your flashlight. Switching it off, you immediately take note of the room – the walls are metal just like the interior of the crate, you can see a large hole in the ceiling, and you notice two domes with barrels doing a slow sweep of the room from the corners.

“Well, there they are.” You say to yourself, moving from behind the door and behind a set of boxes before you can fall into their line of sight. You determine that they don’t have thermal vision from this, as you’d still be very visible and vulnerable even while protected by boxes.

Must be motion activated, then. Looks like I have to be sneaky!

Adrenaline makes its way through you as you move down the length of the shipping crate, eyes peeled for anything unexpected. You note that at the far end of the room – the one with the vault door, it would seem – there’s another turret in the corner as well.

Poking your head out to the left for just a moment, you can see Cinder in the hallway with an almost impatient expression. Her head is darting around rapidly, and while you see that there are signs behind her, you have to press yourself closely against the container before your head falls into the line of fire.

She may have run through here, but you know that slow and steady wins the race!

As you approach the entrance to the room, you find yourself almost unbalanced as a tremor rocks through the ship, the groaning of metal amplified with how tense your body is. The sound of snapping comes from above you, and your body moves on instinct as you see a shadow engulf your figure. You surge forward and pull off the best approximation of a dodge roll that you can, sailing straight through the door and against the wall with a rough landing.

Looking into the room, you notice that it was a large piece of wood that must have fallen, and that said wood is being eviscerated by near silent bullets. You strain your ears, and can only make out the slight chuffing of air.

Yikes. No wonder you couldn’t hear them.

(Tooth is starting to hurt like a bitch again, so this vote is gonna be open for a bit while I go off and wait for my pain medication to kick in! I’ll be back later tonight – thanks for coming around!)

Judging by the hole that seemed to go through several floors, you can reasonably guess you’re either at the bottom level or somewhere damn close to it. Turning to face the wall, you can a little black box that would have designated which rooms were in what direction, however the words seem to have been scratched out.

You reach up and run your finger along the wall. Not only had they been scratched out, but whatever did it had left behind gruesome gouges in the wall. You shiver slightly – even if it was only something done for background flavor, being able to feel it made a tick of nervousness ring through your brain.

Allowing your eyes to trail away from the vandalism of the wall, you see two far more intact signs pasted further down each side of the wall. They’re a deep navy blue, and they both have red arrows signifying what direction each path leads – the one on the left leads up, the one on the right leads down. You try to listen as well as you can down either hallway, but you can’t hear anything except the distant whirring of the ship’s engine.

“Ah, a classic dilemma," you chuckle. “Looks like we have two options, Cinder. Which do you suppose—”

You’re cut off by the distant sound of automatic gunfire, followed by an explosion that makes the floor lurch underneath your feet. The only thing keeping you from crashing against the ground is Cinder pulling you up, her other arm raising the shotgun almost faster than you can see.

“What the fuck was that?”

“If this ship has security systems, maybe they triggered something?” You respond, far more shaken by the sudden interruption.

“Or they could be baiting us. Or it’s a timed event with the ship. Or maybe they’re trying to sink the ship?” She rattles off possibility after possibility, nervously beginning to tap her foot as her eyes dart back and forth.

You stare at her blankly.

“This game has gotten too complicated for its own good.”

“You’re telling me,” she snorts. “It sure does make things challenging at the very least.”

>Stay put and see if anything else out of the ordinary occurs – being patient in the face of the unknown is key.
>Move down a floor – you don’t want to stay put, and you don’t want to go towards gunfire.

“…Cinder, I have an idea.” You say aloud, fishing into your satchel for your bundle of rope. The texture is odd, as there is steel interwoven within the nylon, causing it to be much more sturdy than the article you had been using beforehand. As well as that, the thing is equipped with a nice hook at the end – perfect for getting your asses up there.

The girl in question looks over at you with a curious expression, eyes darting down to the rope and then towards the hole.

“Oh, you’re fucking insane.”

“It’ll save time.”

“Do you think we can make that climb?”

“Probably.”

“What if they’re up on the surface?”

“They won’t see it coming – we can get them before they even know what hit them.”

“…alright, I’m in.”

The exchange leaves the both of you smirking impishly, and without any further hesitation, you rush into the vault once more and throw yourself on top of the crate. You can see Cinder about to follow, but you hold out a hand to stop her – you’ll get the rope secured and climb up before anything else. That way, in case these turrets are about to turn you to mincemeat, at least she’ll still be alive.

Speaking of those tricky things, a thrum of excitement washes over your body as you hurriedly scan what you can see of the hole. Not a lot of points for your hook to catch onto, and you damn well know that you’re in four lines of fire at the moment. Without any reference points for this sort of thing, you swing the rope a few times and send it sailing upwards, praying that this wasn’t a useless venture.

KH-THUNK!

Ohthankgod.

You scamper up the hanging rope as fast as you’re able, the increasingly familiar chuffing of air heavy in your ears as near-silent bullets follow your ascent. You’re jarred when you feel one scrape the underside of your boot, but after a few more feet of climbing, you’re completely out of their sight. A shaky sigh comes out of you, and you call down to Cinder that it’s okay for her to follow.

Looking up to actually see where the hook embedded itself, you’re caught off guard by a whistle that makes your body tense immediately.

At the top of the hole, you see a black-haired man standing there with a smirk plastered on his face, a weapon absent from his grasp. Instead, he seems to be tossing a rock up and down, staring holes into you with his eerie eyes.

You hadn’t expected to be found this quickly. Nor for Edit to be this quiet.

You immediately attempt to shift the rope around a little, namely so you could disrupt Edit’s aim were he to throw the rock at you. For one, you really don’t want to get hit in the head with a fucking rock, especially after everything you pulled before the match started! For second, the rock could easily hit Cinder and potentially mess her up.

The thing that you hadn’t accounted for, however, was how well the hook had been secured around whatever it had caught itself on.

You feel your body lurch as the rope drops a little bit, still hooked around its purchase but now straining under the weight of the two of you.

“The fuck was that, Wolf?!” Cinder calls up to you in irritation, the strain very apparent in her voice.

The rope is shaking under your grip, and a bead of sweat forms on your brow. You find yourself bracing for the impact of the rock against you, but upon feeling nothing, you look up again to see what the bastard is up to.

He’s not there anymore.

What the fuck was that?

“Edit was up there…figured I had to dodge the fucker,” you force out through gritted teeth, feeling pangs of electricity sparking through your arms. It must be the simulation of your muscles giving out, and it’s one of the most uncomfortable things you’ve ever felt. “Think I might have messed up the rope, though.”

“And it was such a good plan, too! What do you say we do, then, chief?” Cinder’s voice is laden with sarcasm. Yeah, you can’t blame her being irritated on this one – this is on you. Regardless of that though, your arms are getting tired, and you can’t imagine this rope staying attached for much longer. At least, not if the two of you are on it at the same time.

Ah, fate works against you once more! Seems to be a common theme over the past few weeks.

“Cinder, I think we should go the long way after all, funnily enough.” You call down to your friend, who lets out an irritated sigh – again, completely understandable. You may have made a little bit of a goof trying to do some eclectic dodges, especially since Edit didn’t even throw the rock at you. What a teasing cunt, it’s not like that’s in character for him or anything!

“Man, you’re lucky I care about you!” You can almost picture the girl shaking her fist at you, and it takes a bit of effort to suppress the snort that threatened to break loose at the thought.

You look down as your partner lets out a harsh breath of air, and you see her let go of the rope and plummet down towards the metal surface. She’s much more athletic than you it would seem, considering she does a picture-perfect dodge roll off the side of the container! Bullets fill the space where she used to be, and you have to avert your eyes as a few clash brightly against the container’s top.

Descending down the rope a bit (so that you don’t take unholy amounts of fall damage), you brace yourself and tug on the rope above you as hard as you can. The strength of the motion is enough to free it from whatever it wrapped itself around, and you find yourself careening back down to where you began.

Catching yourself without issue, you find yourself going over a multitude of possibilities as you grab onto the rope’s hook with your free hand. It looks mangled, but you might be able to pull off the same trick again…if you’re risky enough, that is. Since when have players ever been insulted for performing the same trick twice?

You don’t want to answer your own question, because it was a very stupid one. A part of you dies inside.

The other option that springs to mind is going towards the door and taking either direction, which is assuredly the sanest outcome. You could either go up, towards the gunfire, explosions, and potentially Edit…or down, to put an extra bit of distance while you try to corner them in close-quarters combat.

You glance up to the hole and notice the turrets beginning to center on you – if you’re fast enough, you could always fire a round into the sky to attract their attention. You highly doubt they know about the turrets, considering they’re obscured from view…could make for a nasty trap, if they were to take it.

How do you proceed? You only have a few seconds to make a plan, after all.

>Get off the container and go towards the door, taking a left turn upwards. You know Edit’s that way, and that’s all you need to know.
>Get off the container and go towards the door, taking a right turn downwards. Putting some space between the two of you could be the best option, especially considering CQC options.
>Fire a shot into the sky to try and attract Edit down here. The turrets will help you get one over on him! [This will require a roll.]
>Throw the hook back up because you’re a one trick pony. [This will require a VERY HIGH roll.]

Sky's a sniper so I doubt they'd ever go to close range if we go down and I don't want to go up to trigger whatever plans they have. I have some doubts about being able to bait Edit but shit, it's something.

You’re not sure whether it’s your own anger towards Edit, the impatient and worried glances Cinder is sending you, or the adrenaline caused by four fucking scary ass turrets slowly turning towards you that causes you to open your mouth. Regardless of what moved you to do it, a bead sweat trails down the side of your cheek as you rip your revolver from its holster, pointing it right the fuck up at the hole.

“Couldn’t get the nerve to throw it, Edit? Afraid your skinny ass is gonna trip? Wouldn’t surprise me, considering how easy you were to push over!” You yell at the top of your lungs, pulling the trigger and throwing yourself off the side of the metal container just as the turrets open fire on you.

There’s heavy tension in the air as you hastily move into the hallway, swapping your pistol for the rifle and aiming it at the hole. You barely evaded those bullets, but you’re starting to think you have a knack for running away from gunfire!

Who would have thought, right?

“What the fuck was that, Wolf?!” Cinder hisses, raising both of her guns while giving you a frazzled look. You can’t blame her for that one, especially because you basically just gave away your position further than it already had been.

“He doesn’t – shouldn’t – know about the turrets. If he comes down here blind, those might give him some trouble. We’re in short range which means you’ll have an advantage. Sky shouldn’t follow him down if she’s worth anything as a fucking sniper.” You find yourself rambling, your virtual heart hammering against your ribcage.

The room is utterly silent. A second passes. Then two.

You’re utterly taken aback when a dark shape plummets down the hole, crashing against the top of the shipping container with such volume that one could mistake it for an explosion. The both of you immediately press yourselves against opposite sides of the doorway, shooting each other shocked looks.

“You called?”

The sheer amount of anger in the voice in front of you takes you off guard.

Peeking around the doorway, you see Edit staring down at the both of you with empty eyes, stock still as he observes the scene in front of him. That rock is still in his hand, and he continues to toss it up and down, that same smirk still plastered across his extremely punchable face.

Hook, line, and sinker! You didn’t expect that to work! Fuck yes!

>Stare at him from the doorway, allowing the turrets to do their work. He still isn’t armed for some reason, so you see no issue with watching him get torn up!
>Flip him off and retreat into the hallway – they’re incredibly narrow, and if Cinder goes down the other side, he should only be able to focus on one of you.
>Fire in the hole – his cockiness will be his downfall. [This will require a roll.]
>Toss in one of the special grenades you got from the Gallery – they seem like they’ll do the trick in this situation! [This will require a roll.]

This is some weird shit, could be he's confident in his "teleportation" or whatever. We can see how the smoke is affected and use that info to figure it out. If he's using speed, then it'll shift around but if he's using a decoy or actual teleportation, it won't.

The next and proper course of action couldn’t be clearer to you. What kind of self-respecting Warscape player – either formerly or in the present – would allow an enemy to just sit there and showboat? Look at him with that cocky smirk, tossing that rock up and down! Does he seriously think you’re that thin skinned?

You scowl as you raise your rifle, lining the sights up with his head and pulling the trigger immediately. The end of your gun erupts as you send out a burst of three bullets towards his direction, relishing in the fact that you may be able to score some damage this early in the round.

>L85A3 rifle.
>AP magazine: 27/30
>UAG-36 Grenade Launcher: 3/3

Just as the bullets are about to find their mark, a strong golden light fills your vision, causing you to avert your eyes due to the intensity. You feel something bump the barrel of your gun during this event, and as you try to look what it is despite the light still plaguing your eyes, you notice something far too late.

A small rock falls towards the floor, apparently having been tossed without a care in the world.

As your eyes drift up, you see the man who threw it hurtling through the air towards you. With no time to react, his outstretched fist clocks you cleanly across the jaw, and you feel yourself leave the ground and crash into the wall behind you.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 95/100 (-5 HP)

As you struggle to force yourself up from the ground, Edit has already turned on Cinder with a wicked grin. The girl has an expression of angry shock on her face, and she wastes no time in raising both of her guns to meet him. Edit audibly cackles as she fires one, throwing himself away from the spray and striking the end of the other with his foot.

“More of the same, eh?!” He screams, closing the distance and ramming a fist into Cinder’s stomach, following the action with two strikes to both sides of her jaw. With a pompous laugh, he finishes by sweeping her legs out from underneath her.

>Player: Drag0n
>HP: 85/100 (-15 HP)

“Well, well, well! Didn’t turn out how you expected, eh?” Edit pivots on his heel, looking towards you with an undeniably angry expression. “Serves you right for talking shit that you can’t back up, huh? Another mark against your fucking useless self.”

You feel a headache coming on already.

You grit your teeth and spring up from the ground, ducking out of the way of one of his kicks as you back away down the hallway. Edit’s eyes flash to your position, the grin across his face presenting a stark contrast to the evil glare in his eyes. You can see Cinder trying to get her bearings behind you, indicating that taking the attention off her may be the best thing to do – surprise attacks are valid tactics, damnit!

“You know, for someone who gave me so much shit for using items, the pot seems to be calling the kettle black.”

Smirking at the man while trying to suck in air is a challenge, but you strap the rifle back to your chest and pull out your recently acquired knife. You’re not sure what the button does, but you don’t particularly care – baiting him in is your primary focus. You’d pull out your other knife too, but that seems a bit excessive.

Edit grits his teeth and charges forward, ducking to the side as you swing the blade at him. From below, you hear metal scraping, and you barely move away from his own weapon, the thing a few inches from impaling the underside of your jaw.

It’s still not enough anger for you, though. Time to push the envelope a bit more!

“You claim that I don’t have skill, and yet you’re doing the EXACT same fucking thing. Hell, you couldn’t stop me from pushing you into a fucking fountain!”

Your blades clash against each other, and you can see the rage having reached the boiling point behind his eyes. Admittedly, you’re unprepared for him to drive his knee into your stomach, but you manage to avoid his knife finding purchase in your back on the way down.

Items or not, seems like he’s a good up-close fighter.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 90/100 (-5 HP)

“Funny. I haven’t even used an item yet, you fucking dickhead.” Edit spits in your eye, and you wince. If regular machines didn’t have the blood function, then why is there a spit function?

Fucking disgusting. Regardless, that golden flash of light was suspicious.

Thankfully before any more bodily fluids could be exchanged, you spot the best thing you’ve seen all day – your friend dropping one of her shotguns and pulling out her sword with her other hand.

“Eyes on the prize!”

Edit whirls around to meet a stomach full of buckshot, the gun erupting directly into his navel and causing him to shout. He only barely manages to evade being stabbed in the arm, the blade coasting across the jacket and tearing the sleeve slightly.

That’ll show him, fuck yeah, Cinder!

The boy doesn’t waste any time after that – with a grotesque hiss, he jumps over your body and hits the ground running, sending a much smaller knife flying in Cinder’s direction. The girl is unamused by this, and deflects it with her fucking sword like a badass, surging after him with a vicious grin.

“Not so tough now that you’re on the back foot, huh?! You’re all talk!”

A smile comes to your face – looks like Cinder’s in her element.

If we follow him, he'll probably lead us into a trap. Even if he's an impulsive dumbass, Sky's probably smart enough to maneuvre around the place and be prepared to shoot us if we start chasing him. On the other hand, if we sit around, she'll either initiate a 1v1 on her terms or double team Cinder. It's best to distract her while Cinder has the advantage against Edit, then reconvene.

You watch as Edit disappears around the hallway corner, Cinder following with a victorious shout as she fires another volley of shells at him. You’re unaware if they hit him, but you pull yourself up regardless, readying yourself to give chase as well.

Pausing for a moment, you realize that it might not be the best idea. Edit could be leading you guys into a trap that he’s formulating with Sky, and with Cinder having run off on her own, they could have a massive advantage over her via a 2v1. He may be an impulsive dickhead, but you don’t doubt that he knows how to coordinate. He’s planning something.

You glance towards the vault room and sigh, pulling out your rope yet again. If that’s how things are gonna be, then you’ll just have to be quicker than her and trust that Cinder will be able to handle things on her own this time around.

“Cinder, I’m going up to the surface to try and intercept Sky. Make your way up to the surface so we can reconvene, and for the love of god, don’t die.” You say into the radio, sliding the strange knife into your bag and hoisting yourself to the top of the shipping container. Already expecting the turrets to come, you pray that the mangled hook won’t give you any issues, and you toss it up yet again.

KH-THUNK!

Fuck yes, you’re two for two!

Scrambling up the rope, you don’t pay the bullets crashing against the metal underneath you any heed – you know that time is utterly of the essence, and thankfully the rope shows no signs of breaking. You’re able to ascend with relative ease, only slightly worried that Cinder gave no response to your message.

Oh well, you’re sure if anything bad happened, she’d make you aware. Hopefully, at least.

Looking up, you can see that you’re almost at the lip of the hole – before you get up there, how do you figure you’d like to go about intercepting Sky, providing she’s up there?

You have too much power.
>>
>>4062248

The correct strategy comes to your mind immediately – being reckless in front of an actual fucking sniper would be similar to actual suicide, whether you’re on the move or not. The only right way to go about this, in your honest opinion, is to be cautious as humanly possible. Find some cover, take aim and see if you can locate her, and if she doesn’t come into sight, communicate with your partner.

You nod to yourself, bracing your feet against the wall and ascending to the mouth of the hole. When you’re certain your grip is strong enough, you pull yourself up, and are immediately greeted with frigid rain splattering across your cheeks.

Now up top, you’re able to tell that the sky is extraordinarily grey. The clouds are dark, and in the distance, you spot thunder leap between them, causing you to sweat. The sheer scale of this game wows you yet again, but not enough to stop you from retrieving your rope, somehow still intact despite your abuse.

Bundling it into the bag, you raise your rifle and do a sweep of the top of the boat. You’re almost right next to the far end of it, the hole almost only a few feet away from the railing. There’s ground for you to cover if necessary – the surface is littered with similar shipping containers, small buildings that jut out unnaturally from the floor, as well as what you can safely assume to be the captain’s area standing tall above all of it.

You’ve never seen a boat like this, that’s for certain – but hey, you get it. Maps have to be varied while providing cover at the cost of realism. Speaking of that, you move forward and duck behind a wooden crate, raising your binoculars as you begin to sweep the area properly.

“Come on…there’s no way you’re not up here…” You say to yourself under your breath, if only to break the tension surrounding you. Seconds feel like minutes as you browse, and just when you’re about to anxiously contact Cinder, you spot something interesting.

In the captain’s area, you spot the briefest flutter of movement. A shadow across one of the windows, fast but still visible. Seconds later, you see one of the said windows be opened forcibly, followed by a certain brunette girl vaulting outside with little issue. You can’t make out her expression from this distance, but you certainly don’t miss the large rifle tucked under her arm.

Christ, that thing looks brutal.

Regardless of your instant apprehension at the sight of that rifle, you raise your own with a tremble of excitement. She’s right in your view, and you think you’ll be able to make the shot from here.

>[Due to yet another natural 20, another round of advantage seems to be in order.]

I'd rather the two don't get together at all. Of course, we're also losing a chance to get up to close range to nullify her rifle but considering there are containers and shit around we can use as cover, I think we've got the advantage up here.

Humming a little tune to yourself, you use your rifle’s magnification to get Sky in your sights, as it’s remarkably easy to follow her with the pace she’s going. You inhale and exhale gently, ignoring the rain that’s soaking through your clothes slowly. Your finger tenses, and you go to pull the trigger—

“WOLF, I GOT A FUCKIN’ SITUATION!” Cinder’s voice comes through the radio incredibly loudly, followed by the sound of gunfire. You instinctively flinch, jarring your aim and sending the burst way off the mark and into one of the wooden crates behind Sky. You feel dread build up in your body as you witness the thing shatter, and sure enough you see Sky throw herself to the ground in record time.

Fuck.

>L5843 rifle.
>AP magazine: 24/30.
>UAG-36 grenade launcher: 3/3.

“Well so do I, now!” You hiss into the receiver, ducking down as well as you can next to the small crate. Out of everything you expected to happen, this wasn’t it. You had her in your sights perfectly! Some cosmic force seems to love pissing on you – you’re all too aware about your onlookers back at the arcade, and you shudder to think how they could lambast you for that one.

As you try to formulate a plan in your mind despite the rising tension coiling in your body, your mental process is interrupted by an inexplicably loud gunshot from in front of you. A moment later, the box in front of you is shattered with the force of the impact, and your arm alights in pain as you’re pushed back against your will. Looking up from the ground, you try to locate the girl, but she’s nowhere to be found.

Fuck, that really hurt. You were entirely right to be afraid of that rifle, it would appear.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r

(Sorry for the wait, had to get dinner made! House is full tonight, so had to make two pizzas. They were pretty high tier, and now I’m set to continue throughout the evening.)

You don’t give her another chance to get another shot off on you – springing off of the ground, you move around the corner of a blue shipping container and move a bit down the side before you stop. Judging by the direction that you were fired upon, you can’t imagine her moving far away from where you initially shot at her. Kepeing that in mind, you fumble around in your pack and press a patch to your chest.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 75/100 (+20 HP)

The relief this grants you is immense, and you bask in it momentarily as you crouch low to the ground, raising a hand to your ear so you can speak to Cinder.

“Cinder, what’s going on? Where are you at?” You hiss, trying to keep your voice as low as possible. Better to not give her any indication of where you could possibly be!

Thankfully, Cinder doesn’t take long to respond this time.

“Hiding. That bastard has weapons now, can’t talk for long. On my way up.”

It’s almost hard to hear her over the rain and wind, but your brow furrows in concern. Cinder had him on the run just a few minutes ago – what could have changed during that time? Some of his shenanigans, or did he manage to trip Cinder up somehow?

“Understood. Currently pinned down by Sky, she got the drop on me. Let me know when you’re near.”

“Gotc—”

“FOUND YA, SLUT!”

The line cuts after that, and your face morphs into a scowl. What a fucking dick – your hatred for this man grows by the minute. Gritting your teeth, you begin to wonder if Sky’s gone on the run and if you need to follow, but another piercing gunshot echoes across the ship. Nothing happens for a second, but you hear a harsh crash follow the noise, and then you’re taken off guard when a bullet comes inches away from hitting you in the head.

Your jaw goes slack as your head turns to the right, and you immediately spot a large and smoking dent in an adjacent shipping container.

Did she nearly take your fucking head off with a ricochet?

You can’t stay here. You need to move.

With the thought of that deadly woman and her apparently almost infallible aim, you promptly sprint in the opposite direction, trying to put the dented container out of your mind. To be able to make that shot off of a ricochet…you make a mental note to search up if she’s on a team later.

J-Just out of curiosity, of course. It’s not like you’re interested in powerful Warscape players and their abilities or anything.

As soon as you emerge from behind your cover, the crack of the rifle is heard once more. Without having to think about it, you practically bend yourself at a ninety-degree angle, the shot going wide over your back.

Fuck, that was close.

You hurriedly move your head around, trying to map the area as well as you can with the threat of a fuckhuge sniper rifle eliminating your health even further. Sky is no joke, and you still can’t seem to locate where the shots are actually coming from – although maybe that’s just due to the franticness of the situation. After no immediate option presents itself to you, you surge forward as another shot fires off. Thankfully, it goes wide, and you find yourself pressed against the ship’s rails.

Looking down over the side, you can see that you’re quite far up and that there are windows lining the side of the ship. You gulp and remember your mangled rope – chances are you could do it, but you’d rather not fall into the water…it’d probably do damage, and you’re not sure if it would count as an out of bounds zone.

Dropping low to the ground, you hope to god that you’re covered enough from this position, and you go over the remaining options in your head. You could always run back towards the hole and go down, but you know that Cinder and Edit must be far away from that area – it would be a guaranteed way down, though.

The other option is going through buildings until you found a ladder downwards, which could be risky considering Sky’s aim, but it could also lead to confusing her and potentially dropping right on top of Cinder and Edit…if you’re lucky, that is. You’re not sure where they are, or how far down the various methods of possible descent could go.

What do you do?

>[Due to the nat 20 applying to relocating areas, the following rolls will have ADVANTAGE.]

>To the hole you go – it may take a while longer to find them, but you at least know where it is. Hopefully you’ll have enough time to get to your friend. [This will require a roll.]

Please give me any comments, questions, critiques, or concerns that you have – they help me make the quest not shit. Thanks again for reading! Have a great night anons, and see you tomorrow!)

You feel yourself sweat, anticipating the next bullet to come at any point in time. You pull out your rope and look at the edge over and over again, contemplating the pros and cons of the action. For one, you could potentially find Cinder immediately, provided she’s out in the open. However, there’s always the chance that the hook breaks, Sky shoots the hook, or you fall into the icy water below…

Eh, fuck it. You aren’t a quitter, except that one time where you were absolutely a quitter.

Securing the rope around one of the rails, you not only hook it on, but you tie it too (making sure that the hook is properly secured as well). As you begin to hurriedly tie the other end around yourself, you hear another gunshot, and another crate near you has its insides eviscerated.

Welp, that’s all the encouragement you needed!

You stand up, and after taking a moment to swallow the abject fear of certain doom, you pull out your knife and throw yourself over the side of the boat. You refuse to admit that you may have squeaked on the way down, and you shut your eyes tightly as you blindly stab towards the hull of the boat, attempting to create a makeshift anchor.

KH-SCREEEECH!

You’re immediately halted in place, sliding down just a little bit before the knife catches fully in the metal. Holy SHIT. Video games are fucking AWESOME! You try to pretend that a part of you isn’t excited, instead favoring the other part of you that’s screaming about how much of a stupid fucking idea this was.

After taking a moment to internally chastise yourself, you begin the most half-assed rappel down the side of the boat. No more gunshots ring out from above, which means that Sky either didn’t understand what you did, or she could care less about it. Judging by the amount of windows are visible, there appears to be five floors counting the surface.

So we were on the fourth floor in that case, considering how thick the hole was.

Considering Cinder and Edit went towards the direction that would lead them upwards, you could guesstimate that they are either on the second or third floor. Now that you’ve come this far, what do you want to do?

While dangling from the side of the ship, it occurs to you that rather than taking a random chance and allowing the opportunity of failure to strike where you least expect it, communicating with your friend is an infinitely better option than biffing it after coming this far. While bracing your feet against the ship and keeping a firm grip on the knife, you bring your other hand up to the communicator.

“Cinder, you will never believe where I am right now…” You attempt to start the conversation lightly, and the hope is quickly doused by the sound of wood being crushed.

“Well geez, better tell me quick!” Cinder shouts into the receiver, causing you to instinctively recoil. An unintelligible exchange is heard, followed by the sound of glass shattering.

“You fucking BITCH! Get over here!” Edit howls, the anger in his voice causing you to smile.

“Bite me, fuckboy!” Cinder’s shotgun goes off, making you wince.

“On the side of the ship! What floor are you on? I’ll come in to give you a hand.”

“Gonna be taking that long, huh? Two minutes or less, Wolf!” Cinder says with a laugh, at first making you confused. Then it occurs to you that she’s clearly talking in front of Edit, so of course she’d say shit like that in an attempt to throw him off. Respectable! With that indicator of what floor she's on, you can’t help the smirk that comes to your face, picturing the inevitable look of surprise across his face when you come to aid your comrade.

Victory is gonna feel real sweet. But victory always comes with a gameplan! Speaking of such, how do you want to approach this situation?

(Gotta love sleep and how it claims one at the most inopportune moments. Late night updates never pan out for me, you’d think I’d have learned by now! As penance for my misdeeds, I’m gonna be phoneposting for a while today.)

Having reaffirmed your target area, you roll your shoulders and begin rappelling down the building as quietly as possible. You don’t want any errant noise to be your downfall, especially when you’ll be in full view for a few seconds. For all you know, Edit will use that teleportation gimmick to come right up to you, meaning that you need time to be on your side for this one.

Coming down and holding yourself outside of the window, you get to witness something special.

Edit and Cinder rush towards each other with swords drawn. Edit swings towards her midsection with a sneer, and Cinder parries the blow and goes for her own strike – one which Edit knocks away by jamming his elbow against the flat end of the blade. After a few similar exchanges, they both attempt a swing at the same time, causing the blades to collide and emit a shower of sparks. You’re not sure what Edit said just there, but it looked to be particularly filled with vitriol.

Well, that’s no way to speak to a lady.

Holding yourself against the wall by jamming your knife into it (seriously, video game mechanics are slick), you take the task of aiming the bullpup with one arm, making sure that it’s held in a way that the recoil won’t send it flying out of your hand.

After your preparations have been secured, you divert your attention back to the window where Cinder has just taken a boot to the head, sprawling over an errant table and struggling to reorient herself.

“Well, no time like the present!” You exclaim cheerily to yourself, lining Edit up in the sights and firing off a round at him.

The sound is thunderous even over the wind, and the window shatters completely. Edit’s head whips around, and you can see his eyes widen in fear as the shots enter his torso, the sudden blow and his surprise enough to send him off of his feet.

“Yo! Is that fast enough for you?” You say cheekily, causing Cinder to let out a howl of laughter.

“Just about, just about!” She surges forward at Edit without delay – she’s promptly stopped, however, by the boy holding out a revolver. Before she can divert her path, he fires, and she can only barely throw herself to the side. Edit gets to his feet, and turns to look at you.

“Bastard.” He seethes audibly, taking a step towards you with malice in his eyes.

And then he disappears in a flash of golden sparks.

>Get onto the floor proper – you don’t want to be dangling from a rope while he’s teleporting.
>Drop down to the third floor and burst in there – he’s not gonna dive out of the ship to get you…at least, you think.
>Tell Cinder to stay vigilant, keeping your position off the side of the ship – from this angle, you’ll be able to see him wherever he appears.

Something fucky is going on here. Golden has solidly confirmed that regular teleportation isn't allowed, and that Edit would have been caught by now if he was trying to cheat with it, then there has to be a trick to what he's got that makes it fair in competitive play

>But he had to have had one! He disappeared and reappeared in front of me within a second!
This was what Cinder said back in thread 9.

>Just as the bullets are about to find their mark, a strong golden light fills your vision, causing you to avert your eyes due to the intensity.
>A small rock falls towards the floor, apparently having been tossed without a care in the world. As your eyes drift up, you see the man who threw it hurtling through the air towards you.
Back when we baited his ass in the turret room.

>“Bastard.” He seethes audibly, taking a step towards you with malice in his eyes. And then he disappears in a flash of golden sparks.
Just now.

In every situation, as far as I can see, he's used his 'teleport' to disappear and instantly appear closer to his target, which goes along with his playstyle as we already know he's good at melee, has a knife and a sword, and uses a revolver.

Back in the fight with 0phelia:
>The syringe. Your hand closes around it and rips it out of the belt just as she descends upon you, pressing it to your neck just as her sword flashes towards you.
>Your body is burning. You feel like you’re on fire, like your mind is in overdrive. You’re vaguely aware of yellow sparks bouncing off of every exposed area of your skin, body vibrating with repressed energy. You’d call it adrenaline, but it was different somehow – your body was lighter, and your mental processes were faster.

Now back to the fight with Rock when we found a chest full of potions and other loot:
>the yellow one should be what you used to clinch the win from 0phelia! Fuckin’ haste potions man. That’s the good shit.

The haste buff, at least when it comes to syringes/potions, is indicated by the colour yellow. Thus, my theory is that Edit has an item which allows him to instantly haste himself x100 for a short period and 'teleport' towards whichever direction he's facing. That last part in this update about him taking a step toward us and then just disappearing instead of showing up outside the ship with us or something like that is making me less confident.

Regardless, regrouping with Cinder's for the best. Even if he's a teleport pro specializing in melee, we can overpower him together.
>Get onto the floor proper – you don’t want to be dangling from a rope while he’s teleporting.

The saga of phoneposting begins. Writing now!

With Edit now gone from sight and the wind howling in your ears, it's very apparent that you're at a sudden disadvantage, especially when hanging over an ocean by an only slightly stronger than average rope. To combat this, you plant your feet firmly against the side of the ship, pushing off and swinging in with some extra added momentum.

You launch off of the rope as gracefully as you can manage, sticking the landing and immediately drawing your pistol and knife, hypervigilant as you sweep the room. A memory surfaces in your mind once again - Golden specifically noting that teleportation isn't allowed in competitive play. You had been constantly questioning what Edit's trick entailed, but now that you've seen how quickly he can disappear?

Well, you'd almost prefer teleportation at this rate. At least then you wouldn't be this worried about where the fuck he went.

"You alright, Cinder?" You ask the girl nervously, jumping at a distant crash of thunder. Fuck, it's been a while since you've been this keyed up - the fear of the unknown is a terrible thing.

"Good thing you came when you did, doubt I could hold up for that much longer!" Despite her chuckle, you can hear the unease in her voice as well. Looking over at her, you spot Cinder rifling around in her bag, pulling out a healing patch and pressing it to her chest.

>Player: Drag0n
>HP: 40/100 (+20 HP)

"Gave as good as I got, at least." Another chuckle as she stands, reloading her shotguns. You look around the room again, feeling an increasing fear creeping up your spine. Just where the fuck did Edit go? From what you've learned, he tends to disappear and instantly reappear...something about this is fishy.

"No wonder you needed cheats."

A voice whispers into your ear, and as you attempt to turn around, you're stopped by arms wrapping around your waist. You're then lifted off the fucking ground, and then sent ass over tea kettle as Edit German suplexes you, cracking your head off of the metal flooring of the ship.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 70/100 (-5 HP)

You spot the man moving towards Cinder, who looks on in shock at what just occurred. She only barely manages to deflect the knife in his hand, unable to stop three consecutive fists crashing into her stomach as a result.

"Gave as good as you got, huh? What a fucking joke. I'm feeling fine~!" He lets out a high-pitched cackle, eyes widened and glaring daggers at Cinder. She grits her teeth and headbutts the underside of his chin, pushing him away and firing one of her shotguns at him. He moves to the side, taking some of the spray, but ensuring that a little bit grazes your arm.

>HP: 65/100 (-5 HP)

"You're toying with me, you son of a bitch!" Cinder hisses.

This man is a waking contradiction - reckless, yet willing to toy with his opponents. Aggressive over the use of items yet relying on them himself. So hellbent on getting under people’s skin yet being so easy to anger.

You hate people like him.

(Sorry about the quality of this one if it’s bad! Wrote most of it on phone, but then it turned out we weren’t at the place for nearly as long as I expected, so here I am!)

>Focus on assaulting him with all your might – you need to damage him before he can pull off more of his scummy tactics, and you’ll take the attention off Cinder as you do. [This will require a LOW roll.]
>Toss one of your four healing patches at Cinder and bolt away from Edit – you need to get the attention off of her first and foremost, and you’ll give her some extra healing while you do. [This will require a roll.]
>Bolt towards the window and beckon for Cinder to follow you – Edit is currently as unpredictable as can be, so you’ll descend to the third floor and take the rope with you. Should be simple…right? [This will require a HIGH roll.]
>Use your creativity - there has to be a good way to get out of this! (Write-in.)
>>
>>4067926
The yellow Sparks bit from thread 1 is a nice catch. Super speed is a possibility, and the reason why he didn't go to us is fairly obvious, we're on the side of the ship and it's dangerous as hell. Could've taken a step and then run back.

Problem is, he's said he didn't use an item and that was after we got him super butthurt, so I doubt it was a bluff.

I'd like to heal Cinder but running away again is too much of a risk. Will just lead to another party split and Edit might just stick to Cinder. With Sky possibly coming here, it's even more dangerous for her.

>>Focus on assaulting him with all your might – you need to damage him before he can pull off more of his scummy tactics, and you’ll take the attention off Cinder as you do. [This will require a LOW roll.]
For all we know, he could have given away our position to Sky after he disappeared. Clock's ticking, and while she's got a sniper build, I have no doubt her rifle's strong enough to penetrate the floor and light us up from the floor above while he keeps us pinned down in one place. We need to take him down as fast as possible.

Also just realized, we should really be focusing on grappling during the melee fights rather than slashing or punching. See if he still uses his TP then and if not, it's a 1-on-2 scenario so the other can go all shank mode.

You sigh and roll your eyes, springing to your feet and readying your weapons. The way this dude is going about shit has reached its boiling point with you, and considering the state of your companion, you need to work fast. While he’s looking in her direction, you take a shot at him – one that he moves away from as soon as he heard the sound.

“Think you’re tough just because you knocked me in a fountain, Wolfgang?!”

The man vaults over one of the many tables littering about the area – in your sweep of the room, you had noticed that this appears to be a dining hall of sorts. There are several long tables made of metal, yet there are many that are smaller and made of wood. That must have been what you heard over the radio with Cinder – one of them getting slammed through one of tables.

Instead of focusing on the amount of tables and why they are there, you instead shift your focus to Edit, who is now holding up his revolver and charging towards you. Instinctively, you throw yourself down and to the side, readying your knife just as he fires the gun. As soon as he does, you spring up and aim for the jugular – he counters by grabbing your wrist, but you’re able to maneuver your other arm around to elbow him in the jaw.

“Yeah, I think I’m tougher than you.” You smirk, echoing Cinder’s earlier action by headbutting him – you may not have got him in the chin, but you nailed him right in the bridge of the nose. He groans in pain, and you use the moment to grab his collar and pull him even closer to you.

If physical combat takes off 5 HP a piece, I’ve taken 10 so far. I wonder how much he has left.

(It looks like Fletcher is the character who’s getting art after a 6-3 win over 0phelia – as the youth say, fuck 0phelia. Thank you very much for voting!)

You see Edit brace himself as if he believes you’re going to punch him, and all you can do is smirk at him as you hold him in place. From this angle, you’re sure that he doesn’t have easy access to his weapons, so all he can do is sit there and wait for what comes. This is far too satisfying to watch, however you notice Cinder getting to her feet, and all you can do is look on with unrepressed mirth.

“I’ll say it again, Edit. I know I’m tougher than you. I had to go through all my bullshit, and I still came back swinging. You? I bet all you know how to do is squawk like a fucking chicken.” You say this in a very low tone, enough so that you’re certain that only the two of you heard it. As soon as his eyes flash open, you do the most satisfying thing you’ve done all day.

You spit directly into his eye, just like he had spit on you earlier.

Edit recoils at this, and you can practically hear the rage boiling in his body, enough so that he tries to hit you with a headbutt immediately. You have to move your head out of the way of the blow, and he takes that opportunity to knee you in the stomach, taking the wind out of you momentarily.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 60/100 HP (-5 HP)

“Fine then, you motherfucker. I’m done playing nice.”

“Shouldn’t have played nice to begin with, Edit.”

You roll your eyes, removing one of your hands from him and pulling out the strange knife you had gotten earlier in the match. Edit begins squirming in your grip even harder at the sight of this, and you can barely even hold onto the guy – he’s a weasel, through and through. Just as he manages to loosen your grip somewhat, you bring the knife towards his head in a feint, suddenly jerking down and stabbing it into his upper arm.

Surprisingly, his face is one of confusion.

“What the FUCK is that supposed to be?”

You shrug your shoulders, thumb finding the button placed just under the hilt.

“An item I found.”

You press down on the device, and all of a sudden, your world explodes in a daze of pain and bright light, Edit’s screaming barely heard over the ringing in your ears. Your arm is forcibly ripped from Edit’s collar as you’re blown back, careening through the air and hitting the wall hard. Sparks are crawling all over your body, and you’re left gasping for air in the wake of the explosion.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 15/100 HP (-45 HP)

“Huh…what…the…fuck?” You gasp, feeling your hand twitching due to the sheer force of electrical static coursing through your body. You find yourself robbed of sight, robbed of motion – all you can do is bask in the glow of pain caused from the knife.

Your name is Cinder Faye, known by the name of Drag0n in Warscape.

You are 22 years old, you have a sword strapped to your hip, and you just watched your partner – famed ex-Warscape pro Wolfgang O’Neal – get blasted back by an incredible explosion. You have to avert your eyes from the incredibly bright light, and when you look over again, you see him slumped against the window that he had entered only minutes ago, body twitching rapidly.

“Shit, Wolf…fuck, dude.”

Your eyebrows crease in worry – as you replay the event in your head, the cause becomes clear to you. The knife that Wolfgang must have found is a variant that comes into play inside team games. It’s very notorious for last second kills, it has a very explosive (heh) radius, and it’s printed function is to stab yourself when all seems lost and you’re surrounded by enemies. It’s a very high risk, high reward weapon – especially when someone has the gall to use it offensively.

Of course, he wouldn’t have known that – he had been out of the game for five years, after all. The Longinus knife is a fickle thing. Auxilia were certainly bastards when it came to some of their items.

Your head snaps to the left to track where Edit landed, only to find faint traces of him, the only evidence that he had landed at all being the golden sparks that linger in the air. You grit your teeth and step forward, hand going for the sword at your belt, when the coughing of your partner snaps you out of your instant bout of rage. The knife’s additional effect is a short-term paralysis and blindness – and unfortunately, in matches like this, those precious seconds could be the downfall of a player.

You glance between the door and Wolfgang, a seed of doubt worming its way into your chest. On one hand, after all of the damage Edit has sustained, you would rather not give that son of a bitch the time to heal. On the other, you have no way to track where Sky is, and if you leave Wolfgang alone, you may find yourself in a 1v2 – one that’s heavily stacked against you.

A bead of sweat trails down your brow.

What do you do, Cinder?

You consider leaving your ally behind to finish off Edit, but you bury the thought quickly. You still haven’t figured out the trick behind his teleportation gimmick, you have no idea where his partner is, and you’re not sure you’d be able to go another round with him without getting knocked off. You’re at 40 right now, and you only have three health patches to your name. You’re not sure what Wolfgang’s at, but you’re damn sure that he’s worse.

With that resolution in mind, you pick up one of your guns that had fallen to the ground during the fray and jam it back into the holster, walking over to your friend’s body as quickly as you can. As you get closer, you can see his eyes darting about, obviously confused as to what’s happened. You can’t help but think that it looks sad, and therefore you do the only thing that makes sense in the moment.

“Hey, you awake?” You nudge his knee with your foot. You know, like a good friend.

“Cinder…is that you?” He croaks, trying to adjust his body despite the paralysis function that’s no doubt making its way through him. “Feels like I’m on fire…and I can’t fuckin’ see. What the fuck has happened to this game?!”

Yep, that’s your partner alright! It looks like he’ll be fine after all.

“That, referring to what you just did, is the result of a play your way system going too far. Want to double down and have a loadout of pure bullshit? Go ahead. Want to have high damage meme items that fuck you up in the process? Par for the fucking course.” You stoop down, patting your friend’s tangled black hair. You see his head tilt towards you, and that affronted little pout looks too damn cute, even on someone as wiry as him.

“Well, good to know that you can find that shit. I’m never going to test out an item again without you there, fuck.”

“Ah, don’t be like that! I’ll give you a crash course on shit you need to look out for, I promise! Should have shown me that knife first, though.”

“I was going to, but then we got into that fight with Edit!”

“The one you started?”

“Oh, come on, you can’t lecture me on that.”

“Fair point!”

You can’t help but chuckle – apparently he’s feeling good enough to trade quips with you. Beginning to rifle through your bag, you pull out the items you’re looking for.

As far as Cinder knows, we haven't used many of our healing patches while she's running out. It's best to use one to make sure Wolf doesn't immediately fucking die and let him deal with the rest on his own.

>>4068523
>Widowfire
You gotta be shitting me, there's multiple brands of healing patch too? What's the point if they're all the same, do they recolor the packaging?
>>
>>4068531
That's an interesting question - they're almost always recolors in the case of it being from different providers other than Auxilia.

There's reasons behind it, namely sponsorships (in the case of those who play competitively) and people just wanting to make money in game by putting cool shit on their patches.
>>
>>4068540
What's Auxilia's colour scheme, again? I think it was white and gold, but I'm not sure. After all, fashion in a game like this is extremely important.

N-Not that we intend to get back into playing Warscape! Not at all!
>>
>>4068540
What brand was golden using again? And what does widowfire look like? Is widowfire a company?
>>
>>4068549
White, blue, and gold!

And of course not - who would ever want to get back into a game with exploding fuck you knives?!
>>

>One – you’re sure he has a few of his own.

You'd think that Golden more than anyone else would use the Auxillia ones.

“Well, we’re going to have to get going here soon, so suck it up ya big baby.” You croon to Wolf, causing him to blindly swipe in your direction. You take one Widowfire patch from the little stack and give It a look over – the patch is all black save for a red spider sitting atop a white web, fire wreathing around its arachnid form.

Personally, it’s a little bit edgy for your taste, but they are paying you to use them – so what the hell! Money’s money, right?

“I don’t think I’ll be able to walk straight for a bit.” Wolfgang cautions, causing you to snort as you press the patch to his chest. Rather than the standard fare, fiery sparks erupt from the patch and encircle his body – another perk of having homemade patches, they have unique little animations like that.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 35/100 (+20 HP)

“How’s that feel? Better?”

“Yeah” Wolfgang leans forward, eyes trailing across the room and then settling on you. “Can see again, too. Does a healing patch clear that up?”

“Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t! It’s a real gamble.” You grin down at the boy.

He looks incredibly unimpressed.

“This game is for sadists.”

You share a hearty chuckle and help the boy to his feet. You try to track where Edit could have gone – you think the door he went through leads up to the surface of the ship, although you’re unsure of that. It’s not like you had ample opportunity to explore – you were too busy trying not to get stabbed and shot by one certain bag of dicks!

This mental tirade of yours is cut short when the ground trembles roughly under your feet, followed by the distant sound of an explosion. You recall this phenomenon happening earlier and are prepared to dismiss it, were it not for the fact that you hear the sound of something in the distance grinding.

“Cinder…what the hell was that?” Wolfgang murmurs, stooping down to pick up his discarded revolver, checking the bullets before slotting it into his holster.

“No idea. We need to get to the surface—”

”Attention, passengers! Collision detected, collision detected. Please move to the upper area, a staff member will assist you in—”

Another explosion, and this time you brace yourself and Wolfgang against a table that’s nailed to the floor, watching several other tables go ass over end as the ship lurches.

“…Wolf, something isn’t right.”

“I agree.”

As if to accentuate the growing feeling of dread in your body, the artificially lit room powers down for a moment, the bright LEDs being overcome with flashing, deep red lights. The two of you exchange a look – one of slowly dawning horror.

Edit was a distraction.

(Taking a break for dinner, be back soon! Hope you’ve had a good time reading so far, and if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let me know! I loooove discussion.)

For a fleeting moment in time, you are once again Riley Lawrence – you are known in Warscape by the name Golden.

After Nova, Cinder, Edit, and Sky went into the consoles to play their match, the arcade had gotten pretty damn crowded. People had rushed in from seemingly nowhere, having heard about the match through unknown means to you. Honestly, Nova could probably sell tickets based on only spectacle fights – but that’s not the reason you’re so curious at the moment.

The reason why your curiosity has been piqued is standing three feet to the left of you.

While most people who walked in this arcade looked normal and acted excited, this boy had a different aura about him. The feeling he gave off was enough that despite the growing crowd, people were actively trying to stand away from him, even with their focus primarily being on the match.

He looks incredibly pale, almost to a sickly level. He’s clad in a heavy woolen jacket that seems to have fur lining the inside, and his hands are shoved deep into his pocket as he coolly gazes at Wolfgang’s screen. You can pick out three piercings in his right ear, the fact that his blue eyes are unwaveringly trained on the screens in front of you, and that a note of curiosity lies within them.

He looks really familiar…where have I seen him before?

Almost as if he detected your gaze, the boy’s eyes wander for the first time, all the way over to you. His face looks like it’s set in stone – an unamused frown lies across his face, although he’s looked like that ever since he walked in. Apparently your look of unease was enough to spur him on, as he makes his way over to you, practically parting the crowd as he does.

“Golden. It’s been a while.” His voice is smooth and low, almost sultry as he addresses you. The voice sets off even more flags in your head, and yet still nothing comes to you.

“Uh…do I know you?” You admit honestly, not really sure how to approach this strangely intense individual.

“Orion. Orion Jasper. Does it not ring a bell?” Orion’s voice takes on a cold tone, making you physically step back. Jesus, he’s weird!

“I’m afraid not – would you like an…autograph?” You trail off, causing Orion to snort.

“I think I’d rather start playing Warscape again than do that. Tell me, does Wolfgang O’Neal run this arcade? I had heard that a match was taking place here, and I was obviously correct. Have you sparked a friendship with him? Last I remember, you fought like dogs.”

“You know, you’re asking a lot of shit for someone who I just met.” An edge of irritation creeps into your tone. “Who’s asking? If you’re a player, mind shedding a little light on who you were?”

“Orange.”

You pause.

Oh, dear. Nova’s not gonna like this.

(For anyone just tuning in, check a few posts above this for Fletcher art!)

Your name is Wolfgang O’Neal, and while the searing light burnt into your eyes by the exploding knife has faded, the sparking sensation throughout your body has not. It feels akin to a limb being halfway asleep, only all over your body – having Cinder keeping you supported so you don’t fall over isn’t helping things much, as the added pressure only brings upon additional agony.

Not only that, but the distant machinery of the ship sounds like it’s grinding incredibly violently, most likely caused by the sudden explosions that rocked the ship only moments ago. The red lights flashing and the automated voice over the ship’s speaker system do little to quell the dread growing in the pit of your stomach.

“I think we may have been played, Cinder.” You say aloud, making sure your weaponry is all where it should be.

>Inventory:
>Auxilia branded healing patches x4 (+20 HP)
>Binoculars
>Grenades w/ additional smoke screen effect x2

“How the fuck did they manage to pull this off?” Cinder hisses, reaching into her bag and pulling out what appears to be an oddly colored healing patch. She presses it to her chest, and sighs as red sparks flow all over her body.

>Player: Drag0n
>HP: 60/100 (+20 HP)

“By being clever. Sky most likely knew we’d get angry by having Edit do the heavy lifting, and by focusing solely on him, she was free to roam the ship uninhibited.” You angrily kick over one of the few wooden tables left standing. “Meaning that she’s gonna sink this fucking ship, and us along with it.”

The ship groans after you say this, and strangely enough, the ground feels unsteady under your feet.

“Shit. Shit. SHIT!” Cinder exclaims, pounding a fist into one of the metal tables. You offer her a pat on the shoulder, trying to develop a game plan despite the electricity still crawling through your body.

Time is now of the essence, after all. Seems like you’re in some deep shit.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 35/100

>Ascend to the top of the ship – that’s the way Edit went, and now that the ship is already sinking, it seems like a no brainer.
>Descend to the bellows of the ship – you doubt that Sky was able to break the ship from up top, and you already know that she went on the move. There’s only one place she could be.
>Hang back and heal while congregating with your partner – two heads are better than one, and she may have insight that you don’t. (Specify how many healing patches you would like to use.)

3. I'd prefer moving but with our health all fucked, not really an option. When we do move, though, I'm wondering about the viability of going down. Sky'll have to go back up anyway. If we deal with Edit quickly, we could make it a 2-on-1 when she arrives.
>>
>>4069079
For all we know, she could be already up there, if she used something like a remote bomb or a timer. I think it's pretty risky going down and not worth the risk

“Ugh…actually, let’s stay back for a bit. Edit could be leading us into a trap – I’m a bit curious as to how he managed to shake off that paralysis when it’s still fucking with me.” You say, moving off of Cinder and sitting against a table, yanking your stack of healing patches out of the bag at your hip. “To add to that, we need to calm down, we’re both fucking pissed.”

“But the ship is fucking sinking – Edit could get away!”

“And we need to be prepared rather than walking into danger, Cinder. A patient game is a victorious one.” You rattle off another adage that you recall Fletcher saying at some point in time, reaching over and slapping a patch onto Cinder’s exposed forearm.

>Player: Drag0n
>HP: 80/100 (+20 HP)

She looks down at her arm with a confused expression.

“You didn’t have to do that, Wolf—”

“We need to be in tip top shape for this – I’m fucked up, so might as well use everything for one last hurrah.” You chortle, making a show of fanning out your three patches and pressing them against your chest.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 95/100 (+60 HP)

“Well, I’ll keep one on me as an emergency – I’m at 80.” She rolls her shoulders, setting upon the task of reloading her guns. You eye the rocket attachment still hooked onto one of them, apparently unfired despite all this time that’s passed.

“That’s probably a smart plan, considering who we’re fighting against. Edit’s cocky, but he’s no slouch – Sky’s fucking scary with that rifle of hers. She nearly took my head off by ricocheting a bullet – I’ve only seen a handful of people do that!”

“Oh?” She asks absentmindedly, causing you to cough into your hand.

“Er, my old teammate, Drifter. She made a habit out of doing that when she really went all out, even if it didn’t work most of the time.” You recall a one on one session where she ricocheted a bullet off of a coin – this was before the mass inclusion of items, but things like coins existed in order to distract enemies, rather than high powered decoys.

Drifter was scary both in game and out, and now you’re going to stop thinking about her, because you’re not over that hurdle yet. Baby steps!

The ship continues to wobble under your feet, no doubt because of the water invading the lower floors. Since you’ve decided to hang back, you have a little time, even if it’s a bit precarious.

>Ask Cinder if there’s any way she knows of that Edit could break out of his paralysis so quickly.
>Ask Cinder if she noticed anything in particular about Edit’s loadout, as she’s been fighting him longer than you.
>You don’t have the time for strategizing – you don’t want to be here for long, considering you don’t know where either of the enemy are at this point. (Specify where you would like to go – the surface, a lower floor, etc.)
>Persuade Cinder to use that last healing patch on herself – despite what you said, you’re aware that a few hitpoints could mean the difference between life and death. [This will require a roll.]

(Sorry for the wait, got some dinner!)

As you sit back and try to clear the initial rage at Edit and the situation from your mind, you try to look at the situation from a logical standpoint. Whatever that knife was, it apparently paralyzed you and robbed you of your vision – a weapon intended for suicide, according to Cinder. Edit disappeared sometime before your vision returning, meaning that he must have had a way to counteract it.

“Yo, Cinder. Do you know any way Edit could have done away with the effect of the knife? He fucking bounced far and before I even could stand.” You say to the girl, looking over to the spot where the explosion occurred – the metal floor is heavily charred from it, causing you to wince. You haven’t been hurt that much in this game before! Took you off guard in a major way, along with instilling a new fear of unknown items.

“That’s…a tricky question to answer. Like I said before, sometimes healing patches do the trick, but also…hey, wait!” Cinder snaps her fingers, moving off of the table with a sudden realization. “On that place I looked up, it said that his inventory contained haste most of the time, or for what they were able to track of it. He could have used that to shake off the effect much faster than normal!”

A memory occurs to you, all the way back from the fight against 0phelia. The way that golden sparks crackled across your skin, the way your body felt sped up, the way you moved to take 0phelia’s life. Edit’s been seen with a lot of gold around him this match, and you can’t help but smirk.

Seems he was lying when he said he hadn’t used an item earlier. What a hypocritical prick.

“Looks like we may have one element of his farce nailed down, then—”

You’re cut off when another explosion rocks the boat, causing a few of the fallen tables to fly up into the air. It practically sounds like the boat is being carpet bombed from below – you’re not quite sure what Sky’s up to, but you have a feeling that it’s going to become a lot less safer in here pretty soon.

You’ve healed up, you’ve discussed with Cinder, and you have no clue how long it will take for this boat to drop.

>Rush over to the window you came in through and check on the side of the boat – you know that there are four floors, so you’ll be able to see how far the water’s risen up the side.
>Get up to the surface via the stairwell – you need to get on the move before Edit and Sky have a chance to become even more prepared than they already must be, even if you don’t know what lies beyond the door he went through.
>Descend into the depths of the ship – you doubt that Sky came prepared enough to predict a shipwreck scenario, so she HAD to have gotten to the bottom of the ship to blow it up…right?
>Time is of the essence, and your rope is still dangling out the window. Time to use it to ascend to the top unimpeded by traps or wayward vagabonds. [This will require a HIGH roll.]

Good evening, everyone!

No updates from me tonight unfortunately, I've had a long day and I'm pretty damn exhausted. Very sorry about this, I'll try my best to make it up to you tomorrow!

Going to leave the vote open until I return tomorrow.

Thank you very much for coming by to read this, and I hope you've had a good time. If you have any questions or comments, please give them - I'm always down for some good ol' discussion.

Have a great night, and I'm sorry again!

On the side of discussion, Wolfgang was 16 when the game first came out and he went into comp, right? Makes me wonder how old everyone else on Genesis was at the time.

Well, good evening everyone! Been a bit, huh?

Very sorry for the long silence and lack of updates, turns out the QM curse kicked in with gusto this time around. From personal circumstances to college work, I've had hardly any free time to dedicate to this, which sucks a lot! And due to the rest of my week being stacked with work (first proper weeks of school sucks shit), chances are I'm not going to have any for just a little while longer.

With that being said, I am archiving the thread here while we're before a dramatic point - boss battles, am I right?

Very unfortunate that things had to end here so abruptly, but fear not! The wait's not gonna be very long at all. I'm going to be swamped with work for the next two weeks, but there is a sudden point where all that work will begin to lessen - the Saturday after this one!

So, in short, the next thread will begin on February 22nd, 2020!

Thank you very much for your patience throughout this, and sorry for dropping off the face of the Earth! Hope to see you around in the next thread, and if you wanna chat at me during the meantime, feel free to join the discord if you're into that sort of thing! https://discord.gg/bfBa2uX

Have a great night, everyone. See you soon!
