Your name is Sean Clayton, aka Gunsmoke, aka Adjutant Tango. After your raid on the Iceberg Lounge, you collect your various rewards and make contact with a pair of Intergang defectors before Gotham explodes into a violent battleground. Now, you’re poised to begin your expedition into Southern Italy to discover and retrieve the Lost Scrolls of Herculaneum.

> Hello everyone, and welcome back to another (hopefully) exciting issue of DC: Henchman Quest! As always, I’m AxisQM, and I hope you all enjoy! I’m always looking to improve, so I may tinker with the systems from time to time. Rules are simple: 20 minutes to vote / roll what I say, rolls count even if you (or I) mess up the modifier, crit successes override, write-ins usually welcome.

Now that you’ve prepared yourself mentally and physically for the expedition, you need to decide on the general plan of action.

You…..

> Do some recon in the nearby town first. You’ll have to go in plainclothes, but maybe you’ll learn a bit more about the Scrolls.

> Proceed directly into exploring the ruins. You already have all the information that you need. (If selected, I will assume you want the alien armor / alien rifle combo. Please indicate otherwise if you want a more mundane loadout)

Getting a better handle on the AO is never a bad idea, especially when you’re at risk of disturbing forces beyond your ken.

A brief trip to Jack’s wardrobe later, and you’re disguised as your typical Mediterranean tourist, just interested in seeing the sights and gawking at the locals.

Of course, you’re not foolish enough to go unarmed, concealing your Faribairn-Sykes knife and .44 Magnum in case things get a bit too hot on your initial excursion.

At around early morning at the local time, Jack drops you off on the outskirts of Ercolano. As a brief refresher, Herculaneum was the ancient name for this area, before it was wiped out by the Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD.

You spend a bit of time exploring some of the main street and a few side alleys, mostly getting a feel for the local terrain and cataloguing a few escape routes should the defecation meet the oscillation.

Your first impression of the town is mostly positive. The people seem friendly enough, the weather is fantastic, and buildings are bright and colorful.

Of course, this is also a fairly popular tourist destination, so it may be just a facade.

Either way, you’re here for business, not just to sightsee. The first order of business is to….

> Visit a local museum dedicated to the Vesuvius eruption. Maybe you’ll glean something of value.

> Find one of the town’s rougher bars. All places have a dark side, and maybe you’ll find something interesting there.

> Get directions to a local library and do a bit of research on local occult groups. Never can be too prepared for ancient tombs.

Finding a suitable museum isn’t too hard, as a kindly local directs you to the largest one in the town.

The MAV, (Museo Archeologico Virtuale) is one of those modern museums that in addition to the regular exhibits and displays you would expect from a traditional museum, also incorporates several educational games and videos, mostly directed towards children. There are a few families milling around and touring the various sights, probably trying to beat the evening crowd.

Most of the information you come across is either useless, something you already know, or something you would consider common knowledge.

However, tucked away into a mustier and more sparsely populated portion of the museum is an exhibit that catches your attention.

At first, it’s nothing special, mostly just background information about the ancient people that occupied Herculaneum, but it spices up a bit when it gets to local customs and beliefs.

According to the exhibit, it was a fairly common practice for superstitious locals to make a journey to the summit of Vesuvius and collect as much ash and rock as they could carry.

The collected rock and ash would be sanctified somehow, and it was believed that mages could mold it into becoming everlasting watchdogs or guardians.

You even find a few snippets about a widely contested theory that worshippers of Hecate founding a secret library without the town.

Jackpot.

It’s not too helpful in terms of location, but the theory itself claims that the worshippers had an almost fanatical devotion to the preservation and acquisition of knowledge, especially concerning the arcane.

Interesting stuff. So whoever founded the library you’re hunting for was near obsessed with magical knowledge and by proxy, may have several magical guardians waiting for you.

Terrific.

Next, you decide to…..

> Do some digging in the local archives for more information related to occult groups in the area

> Make a few friends at the seediest watering hole you can find. Could be useful cannon fodder for your expedition.

> Rendezvous with Jack, get changed into your heavy gear and go exploring

You head to the local library, intent on scouring their archives for further information that may prove the difference between life and death in your hunt for the Scrolls.

On your way there, you suddenly get a feeling that something is off. A surreptitious examination of your surroundings reveals a distressing sight. It could just be nothing, but you could swear that you’re being followed by a pair of men. They don’t look like the locals you’ve encountered so far, and if you weren’t keeping your head on a swivel you probably would’ve missed them.

Could this just be some kind of coincidence? Hopefully you’re just being a little jumpy, but there are numerous groups out there with a vested interest in poking their nose into your business.

Are they government stooges planted here for a purpose you aren’t aware of? Maybe they’re mercenaries working for another interested party?

Or, maybe you’re off your rocker and leaping to conclusions.

You decide to…

> Continue on like you didn’t notice them. Maybe you’re just being paranoid.

> Lure the pair into a side alley and get some answers.

> Duck into a nearby business and think out a more complex plan.

> Try and lose them in the crowds.

You’ve never been the type to let sleeping dogs lie, and this case is no exception.

You split from the meandering crowd of other tourists and slip into one of the nearby alleys, positioning yourself to take both of your pursuers by surprise.

Guns would draw too much attention, so you’ll stick to knifework for now, and draw your Fairbairn-Sykes.

Sure enough, the sloppy duo follow you into the alley, where you spring your trap.

You take the first completely by surprise, viciously bludgeoning him with the hilt of your knife. While concussed, you follow with a brutal knee to the face, sending him crashing to the ground.

His pal puts up a better fight, drawing a nasty switchblade and trying to get you while you’re distracted.

You easily dodge his amateurish jabs, before catching his arm with your off hand, twisting the blade out of his hands, and slamming him against the wall with you knife pressed against the back of his neck.

> “Talk. Or I’ll cut your throat and ask your buddy over there.”

A frantic flurry of Italian is the response, to which you tighten your grip a little harder.

> “In English.”

In heavily accented English your captive manages to eke out that they both work for the local mafia, and had just pegged you as another dumb American to mug.

It’s actually kind of depressing that they’re just criminals trying to rob you instead of some secret society or clandestine government agency trying to get their claws into you.

Still, now you’ve got to decide the fates of these unlucky fools.

You decide to…

> Kill them. They might squeal about you.

> Knock them out. Leaving a bodycount behind could also leave a trail.

> Other?

He frantically nods his head, so you put your knife away.

> “Glad to hear. Now hold still.”

You slam his head into the wall a few times, until he’s nice and unconscious.

His buddy, still trying to recover from the beating you delivered earlier, goes down like a sack of potatoes after you deliver a vicious kick to the face.

In a karmic twist of fate, you decide to quickly search the pair and steal both of their wallets. They aren’t carrying much cash, maybe like 100 Euro between the two. Still, you’ve also got their IDs for later, just in case you need to pay them a little visit if they try anything stupid.

Now that the proverbial trash has been disposed of, time for your original objective.

When you get to the largest of the town’s libraries, you scour the archives for more information of value.

To your frustration, it’s mostly just puff-piece garbage, and doesn’t give you any kind of actionable intelligence.

Changing tack, you check the stacks for any interesting books that could be of use to your expedition.

Suddenly, you spot a strange book tucked into one of the back shelves with the symbol you saw in the dossier.

You find a comfortable and secluded corner so that you can read this weird tome.

It turns out to be the personal journal of a local madman obsessed with the legend of the Scrolls. Judging from the dates on the entries, it was from about a decade or so ago.

Most of it is incomprehensible gibberish, yammering on about cosmic powers and divine fury, but a few passages in particular stick out.

According to the journal, in order to reach the inner sanctum containing the Scrolls, the aspirant must pass a series of increasingly difficult trials designed to weed out “the unworthy.”

That always bodes well. Especially since the last entry denotes that this will be the last entry if he perishes attempting to recover the scrolls.

You’ve probably gleaned everything you can reasonably hope to gather from the town, and it paints a bleak picture. This library sounds like a deathtrap, and you won’t have an ancient deity in your head playing tour guide to carry you through it this time.

It’ll take all the cunning, strength, and magical power you’ve got to make it through the coming trials, but hopefully the payoff will be worth it.

Either way, it’ll take a whole lot more than some creepy legends to make you back down.

You’ve got a job to do, and in the end, that’s all that really matters.

That's all for tonight folks! As always, I'll be hanging around to shoot the shit if anyone has any questions, comments, concerns, or disparaging remarks against my lackluster writing skills.

Awesome as always.

Sean should research some basic magical aura/detecting wards to pull of this wizard heist. Mundane stuff we are pretty good at, but the only other one we have to go off of is the one with Set and given how many booby traps he guided us around we need to really up his arcane knowledge.

I think the best way to go about it would be to get a camera and photograph the books and papers of knowledge. Given what he knows about the mad magic lads, trying to take books out of there would be a big no-no leading to an epic gun battle with monstrous figures and possibly a ghost or some other shit. Better to just photograph the stuff to study later rather than grab it (unless magic makes it absolutely necessary to read from the original source material or something).

Also, since they love knowledge so much, bring a magical tome as a peace offering in cause librarian guardians get all fiesty. Odds are its more recent than the shit they have now.
>>

>I think the best way to go about it would be to get a camera and photograph the books and papers of knowledge.
I think the job will require us to secure the scrolls.
Also, are you just going to leave them there for other people to take? At least Sean will use them semi-responsibly.

Session will resume in about 4 and a half hours. As an aside, there were a few pieces of information in the previous thread that could come in handy, in case you missed it or need a quick refresher.

Practicing Magesight is a priority, as there could be all manner of nasty curses and other traps to keep out looters like yourself.

Thankfully, Ercolano still has several small pockets of magical presence scattered throughout the town and searching for them via Magesight serves as an excellent training exercise and a good opportunity to sightsee.

With your increased perception from your newly acquired Ring of Clarity, as well as some of your investigative training, your efforts do not go to waste.

Magesight is definitely more discerning than it was before, which will hopefully keep you safe in the library.

> Spell Improved! Magesight is now capable of detecting magical traps and curses.

Next, you take a brief detour to a nearby tourist trap, and after a bit of haggling, buy a modest camera with the 100 Euro you swiped from the would-be muggers.

By the time that all of your errands have been finished, it’s about mid-evening.

Camera in tow, you head back to your initial insertion point, while using your comms sigil to signal Jack to bring your heavy gear and explosives.

(For reference, the loadout you’ll be carrying into the ruins is as follows)

Secondary

You take a quick moment to change into your heavy gear, putting on the battle armor and double checking your carbine.

Since you’re doing this anonymously, you don’t really need to bother with a costume or any kind of fancy coverings.

As a precaution, you also slide on the helmet part of your armor. Who knows what the air quality is like down there. Could get black lung or some shit. Or worse.

With your prepwork complete, Jack drops off a short distance from the ruins hypothesized to hold the entrance to the library containing the Scrolls.

As a reminder, the entrance should have a strange symbol marked upon it, that’ll only open in the presence of the magically-attuned.

Your initial scouting of the ruins has hit a fairly major snag. The information you were given suggested that the ruins were generally barren, apart from the occasional university team or a local black-market antiquities dealer looking for a score.

What you discover, is definitely neither of those things. The ruins are practically bustling with activity, with construction equipment scattered everywhere and dangerous looking men overseeing the operation.

It slowly dawns on you what this picture reminds you of.

The armed guards match a profile that you’ve seen before. A mix of ethnicities, Western style dress, and carrying a boatload of Western military hardware.

The symbol you spot on one of their munitions crates confirms your fears.

Intergang.

Their interest into magical artifacts is starting to become a worrying pattern. Especially since that means you may be facing organized competition with a worldwide presence.

But that’s neither here nor there.

The pressing concern is determining how you wish to handle this unforeseen development.

You….

> Stride confidently into their camp and demand to speak to their commander. You’re dressed in their elite armor after all, maybe they’ll buy it.

> Try to avoid making any contact whatsoever and just sneak around any patrols you encounter.

You briefly debate the various merits and downsides of attempting to parley with the Intergang forces, before deciding that the most reasonable and expedient solution would just be to annihilate them.

You sight in your alien carbine, and start scanning for vulnerable targets.

In addition to the hefty load of construction equipment they’ve got laying around, you spot a tent with a radio dish sticking out of the top, as well as a storage building far away from anything else.

Chances are, they function as a command station and supply dump respectively.

As you watch, two figures wearing armor resembling a lighter version of your own exit the command tent and begin touring the site.

Judging from their body language and one’s gesticulations, the one doing all the pointing is the junior one explaining something to his superior.

Seems like a good place to start.

You level your carbine and fire a shot directly at the senior commander’s center of mass.

It goes straight and true, but your intended target manages to react just fast enough to push the junior commander in front of the shot before it could connect.

The junior commander goes down, a smoking hole in the center of his chest, while the senior commander begins dodging your follow-up volley of shots while shouting for backup.

You attention is diverted when the majority of the Intergang troops begin firing on your position. Panicked and disorganized, they serve as easy pickings.

Combined with to the massive advantage your heavy gear grants you, you manage to calmly but steadily pick off the armed opposition in your way.

To their credit, a few of the surer shots manage to land what would be nasty blows to a conventional soldier, but do little more than bruise you in your heavier gear.

After the fighting is done and your bodycount risen by a bakers dozen, you’re left with the aftermath.

You…

> Search for that Intergang commander. He could be trouble if he gets away.

> Start combing the camp for anything of value.

> Start looking for the library entrance. You’ve been through enough distractions.

You scan the area for obvious signs of the Intergang commander. After a cursory investigation, you notice a series of footprints in the ash leading towards the supply depot. Dollars to donuts, that’s your man.

You activate Luck Drain, just in case he’s still within the vicinity. Hopefully he’ll give himself away by getting screwed over by the bad luck you cause him.

You follow his sloppily disguised trail, where you find him a short distance away from the supply building, angrily cursing at circumstance.

You manage to stifle a slight chuckle.

Stupid fucker managed to get his leg stuck in a hole.

When he spots you, he glances toward the sidearm at his side, before thinking better of it and slowly tossing it your direction.

“Listen, we’re all businessmen here. What say you get me out of this hole, and we hash out whatever it takes to keep my skin intact. Sound good?”

He says, a slight note of panic in his tone.

Your response is to…

You say, carbine never wavering from his face.

He tries to put up a brave front, which crumbles immediately once you start verbally counting down and hit 40.

Once his composure fractures, he spills his guts about various Intergang operations he knows about, mostly white-collar stuff like embezzlement and money laundering.

You make a note of the various names he desperately spouts. Index could use this kind of info, or you could do some corporate raiding of your own.

As a reward for his compliance, you pull him out of the hole, before tossing him on his ass.

> “That’ll work as a starter. Whats with Intergang’s interest in magical artifacts?”

“I have no idea! Really! I mostly handle the logistics, my deputy handles most of the fieldwork!” He pleads.

> “And where is he?”

“He, uh…..”

> “The guy you pushed into my shot?”

“Yeah, well. It worked, didn’t it?”

Is there anything else you’d like to ask him?

Your first stop is the Intergang supply depot. Though you don’t find any alien tech like the previous site you raided, you find a fully stocked armory containing enough modern hardware to supply a small African insurgency. You help yourself to a few blasting charges stored inside, just in case a less gentle touch is required on your expedition.

It’ll be a pain to get all of that out of here, but you’ve still got the IDs of those mob goons. Maybe you can get in contact with them later to hammer out a deal of some kind with their boss.

Next, you comb the command tent for documents, papers, anything you can either sell or use to put the hurt on Intergang.

And boy, do you hit the motherlode. In addition to a bunch of documents detailing the dirty dealings of several Intergang operators, you find a list of black sites throughout Europe. Hammering those would be a profitable way of putting Intergang on the defensive. Food for thought.

You also find an encrypted file marked OPERATION ENDBRINGER scattered next to a few files about occult research efforts being stepped up.

That bodes well, you think to yourself as you tuck it away.

Now that the mundane matters have been handled, you just have to worry about braving the potentially haunted and very likely trapped library containing magical scrolls locked away due to their destructive power.

Sometimes you wonder what life would’ve been like if you had just joined the Air Force instead of the Marines.

>>4137203
At this stage, if you attract the attention of higher-tier heroes, you'll have a minuscule chance of winning a stand-up fight.

You're better off dodging their attention entirely, fleeing on sight, or having a very well-planned contingency set up.
>>
>>4137203
We’re not super weak or anything, but any of the big Leaguers would beat us, 9 times out of 10, unless we were able to exploit their specific, largely unknown to the public weaknesses, like Martian Manhunter’s weakness to fire. If we went in with foreknowledge of their weak points and such, we might be able to eke out a win if we’re lucky with our rolls and they’re not, or at least escape but I’d still put my odds on them if it came down to it. If we built up our magic arsenal, gathered another artifact or two, and kicked up our basic combat skills another notch we could probably put up a fairly even fight against most of em though, blatantly overpowered sorts like Flash and Supes exempted of course. Deathstroke manages alright, and he doesn’t have any magic or insanely fancy gadgets, even if his basic skills are leagues above ours.
>>
>>4137085
Wait but did we take the alien armor of the two dudes back at the dig site? What about all the arms and armor? Their pocket change?

>>
>>4137090
What would we need to do to take the entirety of the command tent and everything inside to the mansion? And on a second note, if we sell, say, half of IG's armament to the local mafia, what are our chances of instigating a mafia v. intergang war?
>>
>>4137265
>Deathstroke manages alright, and he doesn’t have any magic or insanely fancy gadgets
Slade's got that supersoldier shittery going on though.
>>
>>4137274
The entirety of the tent? Let me get back to you on that one. I'm debating between having the mafia lend you some literal muscle as a favor if you sell them weapons or some other alternative that may be relevant later.

I'm a bit confused as to your second question. Are you asking if a war would be sparked by the mafia being in possession stolen Intergang gear, or are you asking if there's already bad blood between the mafia and Intergang and those weapons would incentivize them to start raising hell?
>>
>>4137284
Just by possessing stolen gear. If the local mafia suddenly has a surge in western military weapons and equipment just around the time an intergang dig site suddenly up and disappears, somebody is going to be asking some questions.
>>
>>4137284
Technically the Intergang gang is on local Mafia turf, so maybe they sorta owe us for taking out the major opposition.
>>
>>4137293
A fair point. But you could also point this risk out to them and see if they're willing to either distribute it somewhere less obvious or store it until the heat dies down.

Otherwise, it very possibly could attract attention.

I'm not seeing it. The Revengeance tracks are all on the nose and super thematic to the characters involved so they can't really be tossed around.

Unless you just want to use a song because it sounds cool.
>>
>>4138322
Mostly because Sean is millitary and would kinda fit in metal gear world what with the soldier with magic powers and hi tech equipment, and the song was more me thinking about his past and criminal present and how he clashes with most heroes and villains
>>
>>4139008
Nah man Sean isn't weird enough to fit in Metal Gearverse. Even if his MO fits to a T.

The reason that song in particular doesn't fit is because that song calls into question the methodology of two incredibly similar ideals. The idea is that the opposing sides genuinely agree on what they want to happen but the way they want to get there clashes. I'd say "I'm my own master now" fits Sean better. Sean is where he is because he was betrayed and has to find new purpose.

Maybe if Sean ever met another former soldier who wants justice but is going about it in a totally different way "It has to be this way" would be absolutely perfect. Sean doesn't truly share ideology with anyone at this point because he doesn't have a strong purpose or pursuit. It's not like Sean has sat down and tried to devise a way to upturn the entire US military in order to fix what he sees as problems within it and its command structure. So far Sean has been mostly drifting along just trying to survive and get himself in good working order.

Man we really need to get Sean something to believe in.
>>
Ironically, I posted a Revengeance song a while back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vp_4vc-btI

Barring a few inconsistencies I thought it was a good fit.
>>
>>4139105
That's just the thing Sean actually DOES have something to believe in and its the only thing that's keeping him together. His code. He lost all his comrades due to betrayal. He was set up by the very people and nation he fought for as they prepared to kill him. Only to be freed by the very scum he used to hate. Later then to be offered a job in a proposition that before he never would have considered accepting. He gave up his very identity knowing he could no longer claim it in order to stay alive. Taking what skills he does have to survive. All the while knowing the only thing he can depend on his code. As it's the only thing left that he has to believe in. All the while knowing that if he ever loses it he will descend into becoming a monster. It's actually what he fears most of all.

Sean can best be described as a soldier without a cause. He knows how dangerous that can be. Its why he clings onto his honor hanging on for dear life. Yet at the same time, it's not something he can just put aside and change. Its the only thing he's good at and more importantly its the only thing keeping him alive. Maybe just one day he can find something new to believe in something more than just personal honor that keeps him line. Until that day he is desperately trying to avoid losing any more comrades and abide by his code. Despite knowing that his current employer craves death which he tries very hard to ignore.

In truth, finding Sean something to believe in his actually very dangerous. As he is not exactly the most stable person and the only thing that keeps him from going over the edge is his code. Sean's greatest threat isn't getting caught. Its someone giving him a cause once again. As sean is someone devoting himself to the only thing he's good at and knows as he works at turning himself into a super-soldier. If he has that once again he'll lose himself in it and become the very thing that everyone fears him becoming the most(while Sean himself isn't actually worried about this others are).

Sadly the thing that Sean needs the most is the one thing that will never happen because this is a quest. He will either stay adrift job to job or turn into the thing that either he fears becoming or what others fear him becoming the most.
>>
>>4139257
If we can’t find something to believe in, let’s make our own reason.

Either that, or make Outer Haven 2

>>4139239

>>4139257
Whoa man that is some deep look at his character it is also ironic when you think about it for a henchman quest we are more like a minor anti-villain
>>4140548
My vote is on OuterHeaven
>>
>>4141927
Sean would have stayed a mook if it weren't for the fact that we crit on the claw. If you think about it basically offers him a transformation/rage mode that is in lieu of proper boss-type enemies. Which basically promoted him from cannon fodder into a hidden mini boss that can only be triggered on special circumstances. Sean is also not at all picky about how to become stronger. Advanced and even shady alien technology. Magic. Experimental procedures to transform him into something stronger.

As for his character, I know some of his type IRL so it was easy for me to piece together what was used for inspiration. In terms of tropes as anons and even the QM has noted. He is a much better fit for Metal Gear than DC universe. He's the kinda foe that would ask some very painful questions to heroes and give villain's hell over their reliance upon minions. Sean would make them miserable if he ever puts together his own force as he's someone who the men would love and cares for them back. His reach with their kind the mooks and soldiers aka 'fodder' would make him a nightmare to deal with. Sean hasn't gone through that transformation yet though but it's been hinted at already.
>>
>>4142121
Our two new mooks will be the beginning, I guess. Setting up a mercenary company of some sort sounds like it'd be fun. Maybe we can get all of them outfitted like us. Let people hire other "Gunsmoke" proxies for smaller, low difficulty jobs, while we take on any of the dangerous ones personally. Guarantee a baseline level of competence among all of our proxies, and even if it isn't us specifically every time I doubt people will notice or care, as long as the job gets done. Would give us time to do stuff on the side without getting bogged down by our main gun-for-hire job, like that Magical P.I. business people wanted, or doing stuff with Set.

Don't really need a character POV to know what MC&D is all about. They collect and hoard anomalous (In this case I'm going to assume that roughly translates to strange magical and scientific artifacts, or maybe just magical artifacts) items, to gain a dominant monopoly on such items, then sell them to the rich and powerful at exorbitant prices. That dictator might have gotten the Ace from them, for example.

Now that you’ve given the Intergang presence a bloody nose and ensured that they’ll keep out of your business, it’s time to practice one of humanity’s longest and most sacred of wartime traditions, otherwise known as looting.

In short order you’ve assembled a neat little pile of weapons, plus the lighter armor you stripped from the dead Intergang commanders.

For the duration, you’ve stashed them with the rest of their considerable arsenal at the supply depot. The logistics of their usage and transport can be handled at a later date.

Right now, the only major concern on your plate is the original objective of finding the library entrance.

It takes a bit of searching, but with a combination of Magesight, your budding investigative skills, and some good old fashioned luck, you find a large stone slab marked with the Wheel of Hecate. Just like the dossier said you would.

Curious. Judging from the various marks, blast imprints, and tools scattered nearby, Intergang had been trying to crack this relatively normal looking wall for quite a while, with no success.

Your information mentioned that only the magically-attuned could open the door, so maybe if you just…..

As you tentatively reach forward and place your hand on the center of the Wheel, it suddenly lights up with a strange black energy, before the slab begins to slowly retract into the ground, revealing a passage downwards.

The passage stretches on for quite a while, with torches along the side being systematically lit by an unknown source.

You’re not a professional scholar or archaeologist, but this is probably a good sign that you’re on the right trail.

The descent is accomplished steadily but cautiously. You’ve made sure to scan for magical and conventional traps, but so far it’s been clear.

Maybe the security ramps up when you get closer to the more sensitive stuff? Either way, only one way to find out.

At the end of the passageway, another large stone door blocks your path.

This time though, instead of a symbol, it has a message of shorts chiseled on the wall next to it in two different languages.

One of them looks to be some form of Latin, but you’ve got no idea what it’s saying.

However, the second language is Ancient Greek. Chances are, it’s probably the same message as above, given the multicultural fabric of Herculaneum way back when. Isn’t learning fun?

The rather long-winded message loosely translates into “Passage to the Sanctum of the Mind requires a Labor. The Unworthy will be Sanctified by the Guardians of Truth.”

It goes on a slightly unhinged rant about the “unenlightened masses” and “upstart fools” before ending with another vicious threat to would-be thieves.

That's always a good sign.

You….

> Hit the door with a spell (Specify the spell to use)

> Try shooting it with your carbine, maybe alien tech’ll trump magic defenses.

> Attach the blasting charges you scavenged from the dig site to the door. Blow the damn thing out of your way.

You activate Magesight and examine the room for any telltale openings, levers, or anything else that could open that door somehow.

The scribblings on the wall mentioned a “Labor” of sorts, maybe finding the correct way to enter is the Labor itself.

Sure enough, you spot a well-hidden magical shroud around some kind of lever. Judging from your rudimentary studies, it’s an illusion designed to obfuscate it from most people.

When you give it a pull, the doors slowly and ominously open. The next room is a spacious atrium of sorts, decorated with the faded remains of several once-colorful wall paintings and several smashed ceramic vases. Most everything intact is covered in a fine layer of soot and ash.

Whatever went down in here, probably didn’t end well.

Still, you think to yourself, that wasn’t too hard.

Your momentary sense of pride evaporates when a dark presence makes itself known.

Rising from the scattered ashes, a wraithlike entity makes its displeasure known to you.

“Interloper!” It hisses in Greek.

“Tread one step further, thief, and you will face the might of the Scribes!”

Alright Clayton, time to get your warface on.

You confidently stride forward, deliberately pissing the hostile spirit off.

Before it can retaliate, you begin to make your case.

> “Silence! I came to labor here as the entrance demanded. Should you wish to battle with words or weapons, I would be happy to trounce you with both.” You say derisively in Greek.

“And what labor do you intend to fulfill, trespasser?” The wraith says, eyeing you warily.

> “For someone who takes such pride at the name Scribe, you’ve sure done a piss-poor job maintaining your library, haven’t you? That is the service I will provide in exchange for entry, creature.”

It takes a moment to consider your words, before visibly calming.

“Very well then, aspirant. As a token of your efforts, once you have cleaned these halls to my satisfaction, you may pass in peace. Otherwise…..” It trails off, leaving the unspoken threat obvious nonetheless.

You…

> Persuade it that you’ll complete your labor later, once your business has been concluded.

An absolute GOD at cleaning
>>
>>4156985
You head back to the Intergang encampment, and find a trove of cleaning supplies tucked away in the supply depot.

Once you make the trek back, janitorial equipment in tow, you begin to clean the atrium. Just like basic all over again. Truly, the world works in mysterious cycles.

While you diligently go about your cleaning, you make idle conversation with the spirit. It helps to kill the time, plus it might slip you a few tidbits that might come in handy later.

It’s pretty aloof and vitriolic at first, but once it sees that you’re genuinely putting your back into it, it warms up considerably.

it remarks that though it hasn’t had visitors for quite some time, most are so arrogant and overbearing that it’s refreshing to meet a seeker of knowledge with a little humility.

Once the ice is broken, the whole Scribe thing comes out in full force, as it enthusiastically quizzes you about modern developments and the various inventions that have cropped up.

While it is dismayed that magic has fallen into relative obscurity, the influx of knowledge it gains from your visit puts it in a good mood anyway.

As a token of good faith, it gives you some choice details about the layout of the library.

Once you pass through the atrium, you’ll be in the general library. The overall library is divided into two separate parts.

The first, is the general library. This is the part that’ll have information on medicine, history, philosophy, normal stuff.

The second, is the restricted library. As it sternly lectures you, a further trial must be passed to enter the restricted section.

You debate asking about the Scrolls, but think better of it. Could be an easy way to burn all the goodwill you’ve gathered so far.

After a couple hours, you’ve got the place looking real nice. It’s not spotless, but it’s leagues ahead of the wreck it was before.

The spirit is overjoyed at the change, and makes no secret of it.

It gladly lets you pass, as it floats around examining its freshly-refurbished home.

You enter the general library, which apart from the dust and grime, looks surprisingly cozy. Still, best to keep on your guard.

Another passageway, with the message “Restricted” chiseled above it, is probably the way to the secure part of the library.

You….

> Look around the general section for a while. Maybe you’l find something interesting.

> Take a few pictures of the place. Good be a good memento. (Free action)

You trawl through the stacks, and to your general disappointment, you don’t really find a whole lot worth mentioning. There’s no librarian to found, which is a bit of a blessing given the countenance of the last spirit you encountered.

Most of the scrolls are faded or illegible, but you do find a few interesting pieces.

First, you find a primer on learning Ancient Greek, which should come in handy for your practice lessons.

Next, you also find a training manual detailing ancient combat techniques. Could be another style to add to your repertoire.

While searching, you take the opportunity to take a few snapshots of the library. Nothing too fancy, mostly just of the stacks, some of the faded artwork, etc.

Maybe Jack’ll get a kick out of them.

Now that the general library has been investigated, onto the restricted section.

You follow the passageway, revealing a room with a strange message chiseled above the open doorway.

It warns you that entering the room will subject you to “The Blessing of Introspection”, whatever that means.

You carefully scan the contents without entering, just in case it’s a trap of some kind. The rather large room is entirely bare, no art, no books, nothing, apart from a doorway on the far side. Even though you don’t spot anything, this only serves to enhance your fears.

Even so, there’s only one way forward.

Despite your worries, nothing happens when you enter the room.

Suddenly, you get a comm request from Jack. Strange, normally this kind of stuff gets blocked in areas of concentrated magic.

> “Jack? What’s up? Kinda on the job right now.”

“Clayton.” You hear in a the coldest voice you’ve ever heard from Jack.

“New information has come to light about the nature of your assignment. You won’t be enough to complete this mission. Head back immediately or there will be severe consequences.”

You…

Alright, this has officially gotten weird.

> “What’s the matter, Jack? Did I piss off another god or something? And what do you mean by severe consequences?”

“Your job isn’t to ask questions you up-jumped thug! You will follow my orders or I’ll leave you in the gutter I pulled you from. Is that a good enough reason for you? Now get out of there!”

This isn’t Jack. Shit, this must be the trial mentioned earlier.

You focus on what you know to be true, your friendship with Jack, your past, your jobs, concrete things that help keep you going and head for that other doorway.

“You were warned.”

This proclamation is followed by a flash of pain, almost like an instant migraine that blinds you for a moment.

Once you regain your senses, your breath catches in your throat.

Not here. Anywhere but here.

Despite your best efforts, you can’t hold it together. You start to panic, the unwelcome thoughts and nightmares that plague your mind suddenly take the front seat.

Reminding you of your ultimate failure, and how you selfishly survived. And look how you’ve spent this second chance. Not for the first time, you grimly wonder if you should’ve died back in that canyon.

You blink again, and you’re suddenly back in the Devil’s Corridor, with the broken bodies of your men lining the dusty terrain.

It’s all you can do to keep yourself from breaking down, but you just barely hold steady as you remind yourself that this isn’t real. The mission takes priority.

Suddenly, you hear a labored laughing coming from behind a nearby rock.

You have to know.

It’s Roberts, with that massive gutshot he took during the ambush.

> “Roberts, I....”

“This is your fault, Sarge.” He quietly chuckles.

> “I did my best to-“

“And look where it got us. Look where it got me. You’re a coward who got us all killed. If you had a backbone when it mattered, this never would have happened. Well don’t worry, Sarge. You’ll make it up to us, soon.”

With that, his laughter dies as he succumbs to his wounds. You close his eyes and check the rest of the area. No insurgents at least, which is strange.

You need to get out of here.

“Not so fast, Sarge. The boys and I have been waiting a long time for this.”

It’s Richards. And Armstrong, Clark, Green, everyone from your former unit. All of them bearing the vicious wounds that ended their lives, along with a dirty, discolored pallor.

“It’s time for you to join us, Sarge. Willingly or not.”

And then they are upon you.
