/qst/ - Quests

The place is Kelch, a port city of the peninsula kingdom of Thule. You are a freshly graduated official of the inquisition, a most honorably organisation and were sent to the local chapter to begin your service.

For now select the traits that we want to quest with. Don't worry about traits that seem to be unnecessary or missing, throughout our adventures we will recruit new squad-members to make up for these.

>1)FIT AS FUCK. You were always the best in the combat training sessions and with your big and muscly body and now perfected technique even trained knights wouldn't want to mess with ya. Negative: People tell you from time to time that you are a bit too much of an impulsive musclehead.

>2)A masterful tactician and scholar. Well read in all kinds of different fields from wartactics to city infrastructure ecology or biology. Negative: You don't have too much real life experience and most of your knowledge is basically booksmarts stemming from your personal research.

>3)Great charisma. While you have neither a particularly strong body or knowledge in tactics, etc. you have your own talents. You are an sly observer who can read people's intentions and know how to use that to your advantage. With your adaptable attitude and persuasiveness. Even in the acadamy you got students to do you favors without them even realising it. Negative: As you are neither strong nor have any intensive knowledge of the city you have been stationed at it will be a very rough start unless you start quickly gaining allies.

to chose please select the number as well as the the gender: -m. or -f.

suggestions are encouraged of course, get as creative as you want and with enough votes I will include it

You are Samuel Barbarossa the descendant of an impoverished noble family. With hard work and a lot of studying you've made a name for yourself at the inquisition's acadamy for officials and were known as one of the most diligent student of your class. Now with much zeal for your start at the new worklplace you are getting out of the coach and step in front of the local chapter to start your term. Next...

You give the building a quick glance before you enter. Four big stone walls forming a perfect square surround the insides of the chapter. Looking over these you see a small tower,(the commanders office should be at the top of this one with the cells beeing in the cellar) looking from the gate from afar you see two guards standing on guard and a couple of wooden buildings which should be the quarters.

You walk up to the gate and the guards seeing the embleme of the red hammer on your grey uniform nod back at you. Inside an older man with the same clothing and emblem as yourself is already waiting for your. ,,Brother Barbarossa you come just in time! A minute later and I would've started to worry. I'm Albrecht Stahl secretary of the commander of this humble chapter Sir Gunther Sola. Come now quick the commander is already waiting for you in the office to inform you about your first task. Or you have any questions that cannot wait until that is done? (looks at you condescendingly)

You accompany brother Stahl up to the highest floor of the tower and enter the Commander's office. Inside a bald man with red beard awaits you. ,,Greetings commander'' you salute and the man gives you a quick smile and says ,, Welcome to the the Kelch chapter of united Inquisition brother Barbarossa. As much as I would like to welcome you more warmly there have come up a few things I must assign you your first task in this city this instant. We will show you to the quarters at a later time right now there are things to be done! We are short at hand here and including you now there are only 10 Inquisitors with rank of official in the city. All are occupied with different matters as of now and so I msut ask you to help with a little problem that has come up in the slums...''

He tells you that at a building made for the homing of refugees a mob has been forming. Regarding that you remember having read in reports that a nearby nation of Elves has been invaded and many refugees have flooded int the kingdom. That wouldn't actually be a problem as Thule doesn't discriminate other races as long as they conform to the country's laws and religion (Mainly the belief that all good gods are minor and serve only as reflections of the great sun ANU with the dark gods beeing his enemies) but...apparently some of the elves have brought idols of their gods with them which and openly say that thes are greater than ANU and one elf even had the audacity to bring out a staue of the dark Spider harlot and pray to it on the market place. He wants you to investigate these riots and punish the elf that dared to pray to an dark god in this city.

,,Who will come with me? I will need reinforcements to fulfill my duty! '' The commander answers you swiftly ,,Normally your position would grant you the right to take two assistants who you could select from apprentices residing in this chapter or recruit yourself from commoners, but today we have to act swiftly so there is no time for that. Take the two guards who are stationed at the gate with you. Don't worry about the chapter we will station a new pair immidiately after you leave. For now take a seal-weapon from the ones I have laid out here for you. The embleme is enough to scare away most meddlers, but you need a vicious instrument of authority to strike fear into the hearts of men.''

You have waited for these words. As an official of the inquisition you have the right to bear a weapon marked with it's seal of authority and while your mastery of the combat skills isn't exceptually good you managed to pass the combat exam at the end (even if only barely).

Laid out before you on an red cloth are:

>a shortsword of elbowlenght
>a combathammer (no practical use only asthetic -too heavy for you to fight with)
>a broadsword (no practical use only asthetic -too heavy for you to fight with)
>a combat whip which's latter half is equipped with vicious tiny steel spikes

You depart to investigate the refugee camps in the slums, taking the two assigned guardmen with you. After an hour of walking the quality of the buildings begins to worsen and you know that you are nearing the slums. Near a big hut made of wood you tell the guards to halt and observe your surroundings. Stationed before you is a party of about 11 people (mainly elfs) shouting obscenities while shaking their hands. ,,There's no way we will stop praising the lord of forests as our greatest protector just because of your stupid laws! You may think your all so great sun-god stands before everything else in creaction, but why can we not think the same of our own gods. To us the lord of forests is our ancestor and guider of the circle of life, Anu has nothing to wit him and none of your false propaganda will change that!'' cried one of the elves (a seemingly young man) in his rage.

You have seen enough. Such nonsensical turmoil cannot be allowed to continue on your watch. It's time to judge these troublemakers. This will be the whole cities first impression of you, so you have to think this through well.

Sadly I had an accident yesterday and dislocated my shoulder. It's better now but my arm will be bandaged for a while so I'm not able type on my laptop right now. I'll try to continue writing on my phone but I'm not really sure how that will work out. For now I'll try though.

Wordlessly you take out your whip and strike at the direction of the heretic elf. He screams in surprise and pain as your weapon wraps itself around his arm. '' Down with you, scum! '' you scoff at him and the whip hauls him onto the floor it's spikes ripping off two of his finger in the process. He begins screaming mindlessly as the crowd stares at you with open mouths.

You retrieve you whip and stare at them, your eyes burning with righteous fury.,, You dare spout this heretic nonsense in this good city? Let me see you continue that under my watch.

The people making up the mob stare nervously at the floor while the wounded elf rolls around in pain, saliva running over his chin. They confirm your suspicions and start spouting the same nonsense that heard them shouting about before, though now with a more humbling tone in their voices. You sigh and tell them that all present at the mob are to write a written apology to the council for their actions or they will be chased out of the city should something like this happen again. They are allowed to pray to their forest gods after all but degrading the greatness of ANU in any way is sacrilege inside these borders. As for the elf that you wounded...

You point at a beautiful blackhaired elven maiden in the crowd. "What about you? You seem like you know something. Maybe you'll want to talk about it after spending a night in the dungeon..." The elf begins to shudder then starts crying "UWAHH Please Mr. Inquisitor don't take me there, I'll tell you everything I know. The guy who's lying on the ground right now is the one who told us to do this. Most of us just got here after fleeing the old lands and we don't have any money or valuables with us and he promised everyone who'd help him make a ruckus her one silver coin."

"Oho" You are surprised, seems like you've struck gold with this one.

The elf who was busy with searching for his fingers on the ground and crying until now looks up hastily "Y-You bitch! What nonsense are you spouting!"

"It's true! Actually this guy isn't even one of the elves that fled to this land for protection. He told us that he's been here for months already and..." she stops talking midsetence seemingly deciding it'd be best to stop here.

You take the elf girl (and the other guard) with you to the market plac for now. On the way there you try engage in some conversation with her '' So, I'm assuming our few-fingered pal back there isn't too popular amongst you refugees, Huh? ''

She gives you a conflicted look. '' Regarding this matter, I'm sorry but I've already said everything there is to say about that. Of course I'll say it again in front of court or anything else you want me to, but that's it.''

'' What's your name dear? ''

The elf girl stares at you in surprise '' Excuse me?''

"Your Name. I asked for it. Pardon, me I should tell you mine first of course, how impolite of me. I'm Samuel Barbarossa, official of the holy order of the national Inquisition." You look back at her.

"I-I'm called Dalua, pleased to meet you Inquisitor Barbarossa''

"Dalua, what a wonderful name. Well, Dalua it just so happens that we of the Inquisition don' t have time to waste on lies so please don't give me some unimaginative lies on this matter."

"I..."

"No, no, no Dalua, dear...I think you don't understand. Tell me everything you know about this matter or before the sun goes down you will pray to your gods to lose your fingers, especially the nails, as quickly as your friend back there."

She stares at you in horror for a moment and swallows her saliva. '' P-Please I... ''

For Anu's sake, this already took long enough, time for the final blow.

"I can have you tried and punished as an accomplice to this conspiracy. Do you know we burn convicted accomplices alive too?"

Panic immidiaely strikes the girls facial features at yor words. Seems like she did in fact not know that.

"I don't know much..."

"That's ok, just tell me what you do know."

She tells you that the elf that you had apprehended appeared before the refugee camp few days ago and started riling the people up to voice their discontent. In truth most of the elfs didn't really care about things like gods and religion right now. Most of them had lost their fortunes, homes, family and friends during their escape to Thule and freedom of religion was the least of their worries. The heretic elf quickly realised that as well and changed strategies to giving out money to anyone who'd support him with his proposal. With most of the refugeesbarely getting enough money for meals with the state support many agreed to this. There she stops and hesitates speaking again. Even though she is scared of your threats, something she's heard or seen in the last few days seems to scare her even more.

What to do...

"A moving sobstory for sure but dou actually believe soething like HERESY can be excused with this? Talk now and I may spare you and your companions, if not you will burn."
"No please...I'll talk already." and so she did.

Turns out that several hints point to the heretic elf, acting on behalf of a powerfl backer. He was still clothed in rags until a few days ago (Dalua saw him wandering the streets by chance), when he suddenly reappeared before the refugees to make his claims. The plentiful funding for his new clothing and the bribes for the refugees must have come from somewhere and Dalua reluctantly tells you about hearing him mentioning a "Sir" that would help hiim avoid any harsh punishments. That seems to be all she knows though.

Not good, if a knight is involved in this matter that complicates things by a large margin. In order to investigate nobility (even their lowest members, the knights) except in high emergencies one needs at least a handwritten permission from the chapter commander, for most higher ranking nobles you even need one from the headquarters. This is no small matter, from reading several biographies and documented case files during your studies you know that it is very likely for the commander to just sweep this matter under the rug to avoid a political backleash. You don't like this unjust way of handling things realistically (especially involving heretic behaviour) but one has to keep a cool head to better the world.
On the other hand, this could be your chance to stand out and shoot through the ranks immidiately. If this really turns out to be some kind of conspiracy you'll have to prepare accordingly. Seems like this matter will take some time to be resolved.

>Proceed to the market place for now
>immidiately return to the chapter and tell the commander about your new findings. (better not to mess with something like that yet. It's just your first day and this is out of your league...)

Best take Dalua to the chapter to take the statement (laeving out the matter regarding the knight) and make her your temporary assistant for now

"Change of plans my dear, I'll overlook what I've seen today, but for now we'll go to the chapter office to take your stattement." She agrees with a relieved nodd and with the guard in tow you turn back into the direction oof the Inquisition chapter.

There you explain the situation to the secretary and a writtten statement is made and stamped, which Dalua immmidiately signs.
"Another thing brother Stahl, as this girl has proven immensely helpful to my investigation I've decided to enlist her as my temporary assistent for now. This shuld prove to be no problem, Yes?"

Dalua looks at you in surprise but from her expression seemingly not reluctant to agree of the idea. You expected this of course, from the contents of her talk she seems to be not to well in regards to money.

"Seems like briliant idea Brother Barbarossa, I'll tell the commander od your eagerness to solve this case. We expect great things from you. Girl, the salary for assistants is 2 silver coins per day, you'll receive them by the end of every week. Breakfast and dinner are included and already reduced from that sum, as for lunch you'll have to sort that out for yourself. It's late now Brother but I ecpect you both to continue with investigation at the market tomorrow. Good night and may Anu bless You."

You smirk, wish him a good night as well and he leaves you alone in your quarters. That went better than expected, now...

"Temporary assistant Dalua, you have much to gain if you follow my lead and there are some things we have yet to discuss. I assume you are content with the amount of your salary?"

She nods slowly "Of course and I am very thaankful for this opportunity, but why? Until a while ago you seemed very angry and I was almost afraid for some harsh punishment. What caused you to change your stand?"

"I'm glad that you ask TA Dalua, it's like this..."
You explain your plan to yor newly appointed temporary assitant and she, though shocked accepts your terms after considering them for a bit.

"After we have solved this mystery I'll have your status changed to my permanent first assistant, this will include a lifetime employment with benefits and further chances to increase your rank in the organisation. In addition to that I will personally have your lunch paid for or to be more clear, you are to stay near me at all times. Until we have cleared up this conspiracy your life will be in danger so don't do anything stupid. I've got my rank so I'm not an insignificant character here, but I'm still new to this city so I won't be able to protect to you if you're not precisely following my instrucrions. Also one last thing, from now on you are to address me as Inquisitor Barbarossa or just Inquisitor for short."

"Understood, Inquisitor Barbarossa!"

You nod and send her to the assistant quarters. You should go to bed soon but before that you take out a big folder of papers from your suitcase, you came here prepared after all...

Another thing, doing this quest has been very fun and I plan to continue it for the forseeabel future. That beeing said, does any one know how I can permanently archive this thread in case I want to make a new one to continue it? This is my first time doing one I want to make multiple parts of so I don't really know how this works.

You look through your documents for the history, current status and relations of nobility in the city of Kelch. It seems that the old port-city used to be a Dukedom. However, about 2 generations ago the head of the noble Rilt family at that time (Grandfather of the current Duke Rilt) sold the complete rights to the port and about half of the city to the royal crown, in order to pay for mercenaries to use at a certain feude with another dukedom. The head of the rilt family still has the status of duke but Kelch is now regarded as something of a mixture between dukedom and a small city state to the crown. Government is made up of the honarable Duke Rilt, a royal prefect and a high-bishop of the church. Furthermore there are at least 4 knights serving under the Duke of Rilt at all times.

If all that is taken into account, the person referred to as "Sir" by the heretic elf is most likely one of these 4 knights.

Disegarding all that you suddenly think again of the unique postion of the Inquisition in this country. Protect the innocent and punish the guilty - These words are the cornerstones of the organisation. Be it within politics, religion or law, it is the responsibilty of the Inquisition to uphold the order of things. As we are financed through a special tax that all (the church, royalty, nobles) have to pay the Inquisition has in theory the power to persecute each and everybody. Reality of course looks different as many factions have formed within the Inquisition over the years but...

No matter for now you have all the information ou need. Time to go to sleep for now.
In the next morning you wake up refreshed and go the cantine to eat breakfast. There you see Dalua (already clothed in her new assistant's robe) already eating from a pile sweetbreads with honey. You say hello, sit down next to her and join the meal. After that...

>Go to the dungeon and look after your prisoner (heretic elf). He's already been here for the night, now let's hear what he's got to say.

>Go to the market place to investigate

>Take yourself another assistant from the apprentices. It will be more difficult to act in secrecy with yet another person, but you need the manpower right now.

>Go to the slums to recruit people that can look out for suspicious activity (build informationnetwork).

After finishing up you and Dalua decide to go to the market place and leave the chapter. Arriving at your destination then you start looking around and asking the peddlers and sellers about the dark god's idol. Soon it becomes apparent that the incident of the elf worshipping a dark god did indeed happen but soon after the elf had apparently vanished together with his statue.

"What do you think we should do next Dalua? Do you have some insight that I don't, as a fellow elf perhaps?"

"Sorry Inquisitor Barbarossa, I've only ever prayed to the lord of forests...and to great Anu of course"

You nod with an approving grin. "I thought so, but what do we do now? We have to get this guy into custody..."

You decide to wait for the heretic in a dark alley with a direct view to the market place to prepare an ambush. While waiting for him, you ask Dalua about her life before coming to this country.

"Well, since we first met at the refugee center you've probably guessed some things already. My home country., the elven nation Aria has been attacked by those barbaric arachnids and those guys don't take prisoners, everyone who couldn't flee die. There is most likely not a single normal elf alive in Aria anymore..."

Arachnids...you've read quite a lot of them in the old scriptures. Like many other fiends they are descendants of a sentient race that made a pact with a dark god and got corrupted. Legend says the first Arachnids were elves that received a portion of divinity from the dark spider harlot. A handful of elves still worship her (damn heretics) but from what you've heard there haven't been any elves that received her blessing since that one time. Still the fact that a heretic prayed to the harlot on this very market place is quite suspicious with regards to Aria's recent invasion. You have to catch this elf.

Dalua continues: "I've lost everything to those bastards. My home was destroyed, my husband killed and I've been separated from my children and grandchildren while fleeing the country!" Now nearly having dears dropping down her cheeks.

Huh, wait a second? Grandchildren? Now that you think about it, you forgot because of how stressful your first day was, but don't elves age 3 times slower than humans after reaching adolescence...

"My condolences about your family, becoming a widow like this must've been quite the shock...Uhm, Dalua sorry if that's a rude question but how old are you?"

"Oh not at all, funny that you ask my fifty-first birthday would've been just last week!"

FIFTY-ONE! Heavens you've recruited a fifty-one-year-old grandma as your assistant! Suddenly you feel a bit bad. This shouldn't be morally incorrect right? She's an elf after all, their standards are different.

"I-I see, well then let's wait for another hour for now and see what happens."

After about 20 minutes a suspicious man in a dark hood appears in the midst of the market place and takes out a waist-high black statue that depicts a woman-faced spider on an altar. You got him...

>Wait to see what he does next.
>Immidiately storm out to arrest him.
>Send Dalua to converse with him, maybe he will reveal some things to her in good faith he wouldn't if he got arrested.

You send Dalua to converse with him, maybe he will reveal some things to her in good faith he wouldn't if he got arrested. While she makes her way to the heretic you take out the whip and bide your time.

First, all seems to go well, Dalua greets the elf and he seems to be pleased with something she says to him (a compliment maybe?). Then, as the guy starts talking while pointing at the statue and nodding vehemently, Dalua's face begins to darken. She starts clenching her fists, her, smile getting stiff. Oh crap, you should have anticipated this, of course she'd get angry hearing someone praise the god that's responsible for destroying her home and family. From the looks of it she's ready to pounce at him very minute now, though the guy seems oblivious to it all.

You better think this through a bit more...

>"Halt! In the name of the Inquisition don't move you are under arrest for heresy" (arrest him now)
>Let Dalua listen on, for now, if she really beats him up you can just stop her and arrest him after
>Attack the heretic with your whip

You step out of the dark corner into the light. While taking out your whip you simultaneously shout: "Halt! In the name of the Inquisition don't move you are under arrest for heresy"

With one strike you grab the dark idol from the stone on which it stood with your whip and lunge it to the dirty ground where it belonged. The heretic turns around in surprise and lets out an angered scream upon seeing the statue, now with its head broken off on the floor.

First it seems like he wants to attack you, then he sees your robe and his face whitens. While he hastily turns around to run, you just shout: "Now Dalua!" and with a force like you've never seen before she kicks him between the legs.

"Don't you dare try to run now, Motherfucker! I've had to listen to your Bullshit long enough, now it's time for you to get some!"
Cursing and scowling Dalua continues to kick the heretic who's already on the ground for a full minute before you stop her. "Enough now TEMPORARY assistant Dalua, we still have to interrogate this scum."
"But..."
"Will you take responsibility if his jaw is damaged and he cannot talk anymore? Come now, we'll get this piece of shit to the chapter."
"Understood Inquisitor, I apologize for my lack of insight."
Now...

You call out for some city-guards to help you escort the elf to the chapter. There're always some patrolling around and in cases like this they will help you out. Your help arrives shortly after and together you all walk back to the chapter.

Arriving there you thank the guards and send them away. You hand your prisoner over to some assistants who then proceed to carry him (now unconscious from shock) into the dungeon.
In front of the stairs to the commander's office, you halt. "Stay here Dalua, I'll have to report the progress of our investigation to the commander." You leave her there and go up the stairs and into the office.

"Official Barbarossa here to report the proceedings of the investigation!"
"Ah good to see you, official, do tell me what you've found."

You tell him the whole story, only leaving out the matter with the possibly involved noble. "Commander if I could make a suggestion, please let me lead the interrogation of our two prisoners. I'd like to see this matter to it's end..." He agrees to your request and after praising your zeal for a bit he dismisses you.

You decide to start your interrogation with the elf that mentioned the noble. Together with Dalua you walk down the dimly lit stairs into the tower dungeon. The dungeon of the inquisition is different from the regular jailhouse of the city, it's a place specially reserved for heretics. After passing a few of the cells (which have thick steels doors with a small closable looking window, instead of mere grids) you stop before the one you searched for. "Let's look how he's keeping up in there." You push aside the lid for the tiny door window and see a cowering figure chained to the walls of the cell. It seems like he's ready to go.

You and your assistant enter the cell.

>Let's make this short. Tell me everything you know. Who hired you to make trouble and why? (cold, emotionless demeanor)
>Kick him in the stomach. (unprovoked)

You walk over to your prisoner and first thing kick him directly in his stomach. You feel his tummy dent inward under the pressure of your boot. Typical elf, their highly praised soft skin doesn't seem to give them much of a defense. He trembles for a few seconds before throwing up all over the floor. You step beside his mess and give a disgusted grunt.

"Goddamn that's filthy. Keep it in next time, will you!"
"Next time? What...?"
You kick him again this time with less force, but on the left side of his chest where his heart should be.
He grunts in pain and starts sobbing.

"So here's how it'll go. Normally this works by asking questions first then applying some pressure but you're not the only one I've got to deal with today. So...I'll just beat you until you start talking."

And so you do. The first ten minutes you dont' even give him time to say anything just kicking and stomping his chained up body. Sure enough, after resting your legs for not even a minute he starts whispering out all secrets through a veil of tears.

"It's the Duke's nephew. The young lord Harvey. He just told me what to do, just told me to rile the refugees up a bit. He gave me money and a nice place to stay for a while and-!OWWWWW Please sstop don't kick me, I'm talking already" he sniffs.
"Sry I couldn't resist. Something in your face just ticks me off. Continue."

But there isn't much more that he can tell you, basically he got his orders by Harvey Rilt a knight as well as the nephew of the current Duke Rilt. He met him once while strolling around the city half-drunk. Harvey probably thought the elf a perfect target. Some foolish nobody if he fulfilled his orders all was good and if he failed or was imprisoned nobody would take him seriously either not believing him or being intimidated by him mentioning a knight.

The elf doesn't seem to know anything else so now all that's left is planning your next move.

>"You didn't renounce Anu directly this time so if you stay cooperative you'll only have to deal with 3 years of imprisonment."
>"Assisting with attempted conspiracy is punished with death!"
>"Stay and rot in here for a while longer. I'll figure out what to do with you after having a talk with the other one."

"Stay and rot in here for a while longer. I'll figure out what to do with you after having a talk with the other one."

You leave his cell with these words and close the door behind you.
Dalua turns to you "Is the one we seized from the market place next?" she asks with anticipation.
"Hm? Oh yes, but from what I've seen before, with that guy it won't be as easy as just now. He didn't complain at all even after you beat him up and kept silent the whole way back here. This guy knew exactly that what he did is strictly punished with death in this country, but he did it anyway. If you ask me he's probably already expecting a death sentence. What he and most other newcomers to this town don't know though...we have our own ways to deal with particularly determined heretics in this dungeon. Alright we're there."

You stop at the end of the hallway in front of a big double door made of iron. A giant eagle with a hammer in each claw is engraved over both sides of the door.

"This, my dear, is the chapter's torture chamber and I've already asked for our head torturer to await us here together with our prisoner."
You swing the door knocker two times and the doors swing open. The short hunched figure of an old man greets you.

"Welcome Brother Barbarossa, I've already heard much of your recent successes. Let me congratulate you on your arrests."

"Thank you, Brother Elrick. Dalua, this is Brother Elrick former official and now head torturer of the local Inquisition."
"Greetings, head torturer!"
The old man smiles, "Oh my, what an eager child. If you get bored with running errands all day, do visit the chamber once in a while. We're always in search of new applicants regarding...interrogation specialists."
