“The Krieger Corp is the life for me,
A gun, bed and funeral for free.
That’s my lot in the Black Company.”

It took the Earth 10 long years to die. Like every planet afflicted by the pervasive sentient plague that swept the galaxy at the turn of the 23rd century, aptly named The Rot, Earth’s demise was slow and agonising at first then violent and sudden by the end. The seas boiled and the air turned to ash in the wake of the continent-shattering orbital bombardments that cleansed her and a hundred other worlds.

20 years later, the dust of the Purification Wars has settled and the surviving xenos empires have finished carving up the remaining colonies of those less fortunate races between them, including those few left from Earth’s initial phase of expansion. Just rewards for the victorious alien’s part in saving the galaxy. The surviving human population, once many billions, now numbers in the mere millions. An entire race of refugees, vagrants and backwater outcasts begging, stealing and labouring as second-class citizens, servants or slaves under uncaring alien masters.

A lifetime of backbreaking work for stale recycled oxygen units and a handful of credits is the best fate most humans can hope for. Little wonder then that the violent but lucrative life of a mercenary holds such appeal. As the novelty of peace wears off and the rival alien nations rattle their sabres once more, human mercenaries are in high demand for their crude effectiveness and affordable prices.

And of all the human mercenary firms, there are none so infamous and so highly sought after as the services of the Black Company…

Royal Savis Empire Space - Dis, Daskar Princeps Mines – One Year Ago

KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.
KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.

#24601 could not remember a time in his life without the familiar drone of heavy machinery, the crack of the rocks splitting under the handheld drill, the ticking of the debris being swept aside. The harsh barks of the Masters, half his height but walking twice as tall on the metal railing above the pit.

KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.
KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.

There must have been a time when he was not in the mines. Must have been. It took a fully mature adult to wield the rocksplitters, but even when he was not assigned this role #24601 could only remember ferrying water and running errands like the other undermature humans found in the Daskar Princeps mines.

KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.
KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.

One of the older humans had spoken of such things, a grey man numbered #35993 who kept calling himself ‘Bronson’. Mine slaves weren’t supposed to have names, #24601 had seen others beaten for even using them within earshot of the Masters.

KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.
KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.

Bronson hadn’t cared. He’d told #24601 and the others about a magical land, a place before the Daskar Princeps Mines where there were no Masters, no slaves and no chains. A place called Erth. Some had called him mad, but others whispered they had heard similar stories. That slaves had not always been slaves, that something had been taken from them.

KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.
KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.

Bronson had died in a rockslide last month. But not before he had given #24601 a name. He had given them all names, though some of the slaves had laughed at him and the old man had even been beaten severely for it when one of the Masters overhead him. But #24601 did not laugh at his name. He cherished it. Held it close. Whispered it during the night time shift to himself in his bunk. To the Masters, he was merely a number. But, hidden in a place deep within where even the Masters could not reach and take it, he was more.

He was not #24601. He was Li Wei.

KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.
KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.

Li Wei.

He had a name. And the Masters could not take it from him. He would not let them!

KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.
KERCHINK. TAK. TAK.

No, that wasn’t right.

Li Wei had always been Li Wei. The name had always been his, not the Masters. He had taken it back. And if he could take his name, Li Wei began to think dangerous thoughts indeed. Like what else the Masters had taken from him that was rightfully his alone. And how he might take such things back…

Royal Savis Empire - Dis, Rebel Base – Three Days Ago

Li Wei Freeman stood in line with his comrades, sleeves rolled up and smuggled weapon gripped tightly at attention. The tattoo Death to the Masters emblazoned proudly in loud words on one forearm, Death to the Empire on the other.

Li Wei Freeman did not need to pose or look fierce for the camera while their leader Breaker spoke. Weeks of training had made him fierce enough. A year on the run in the wild had made him fierce enough. A lifetime spent in chains had made him fierce enough. He did not need to act hateful as he dragged the Savis Daskar Governor to the front, bound and gagged. His hate was real enough.

“I Am Called Breaker. I Am A Breaker Of Chains.” Their Auxl leader continued to speak pidgin Imperial as one of his enormous hands came to rest over the skull of the whimpering Governor. “A Breaker Of Masters.”

The sound of the Master’s skull crumbling to a pulp under Breaker’s iron grip was music to Li Wei Freeman’s ears. Music. Another thing the Masters had taken from them. One day, they would take it all back. Every last thing. Whatever it may be. They would take it back. Today was just the beginning.

“No Gods Will Deliver Us From Our Chains. The Burden Of The Revolution Falls To Us Alone. To Every Single One Of Us.” Breaker continued speaking in his avalanche voice, not even pausing the wipe the rubble of the ruined Governor’s head from his palms. “Join Us Brothers And Sisters, For That Is The World Which We Shall Build. A World Without Gods. A World Without Masters. No Gods. No Masters.”

“No Gods!” Li Wei Freeman and the others roared. “No Masters!”

red]“No Gods! No Masters!”

Lesson Two - The Strength of the Vinehound is the Pack
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBbcb17Xf_A&t=13s&ab_channel=SergeiShust – I mean, pretty much…

>RESULTS
>Leading the Pack Leadership Test: 3 Success - Born Alpha. +1 Save to Wetwork Roll this lesson (single use). In addition to other bonuses, unlocking your next Genemod Branch costs 50% less. As you did not use the save, in this instance I will grant you a single use general re-roll for the rest of the training session
>Circling the Herd Wetwork Test: 3 Success - The prey stumbles! +5 Rebels Down. Close Encounter against Corporal Crane. Success in CE will eliminate the rebels in this squad, with the rest being hunted down.
>Snake Eyes vs Crane Close Encounter: 2 Success - It’s over Crane, I have the high ground. Crane becomes a Casualty -2 Severity, but he buys time for a few rebels to make their escape. +1 Re-Roll to Lesson Learnt.
>Snake Eyes vs Crane Close Encounter: Double Fail - Dirty Secret. +1 Adverse Re-Roll to future Leadership test with Crane.
>CPL ‘Crane’ Shizuka is WOUNDED (broken arm)
>Lesson Learnt Leadership Test: 3 Success - Enlightened pupils. You see first-hand the rebels take this lesson to heart, and in a manner that is sure to be reinforced into future recruits. Next lesson.

CPL ‘Sharky’ Van der Meer and TPR ‘Mafia’ Alessandra were born on different sides of the deathworld moon named Clayton’s Cradle. None of you originated from the same tribe, nor even had a remotely similar clan affiliation. Sharky spent a decade in the Legio Auxilliaries, and Mafia had spent as much time working in Perspiran bars as she did joining hunting parties on the Cradle before she joined the Company. It’s been a long time for all of you since you’ve seen the jungle, if one is willing to stretch the definition far enough to put the Green Hell of home in the same broad category of this comparatively paradisal tropical realm. But that doesn’t matter one bit. There are certain things inherent in a Cradler Pack, things that a Cradler never forgets.

The three of you move in absolute silence, not even leaves of the jungle floor are disturbed by the step of your boots as you pad closer towards your quarry through the undergrowth. You speak no word and make no signal, each of the fellow members of your pack taking up their positions at precisely the right distance and angle of approach. Better than you could ever have articulated, even to your own squad. When it comes to the Hunt, especially in a familiar landscape such as this, Cradlers are without equal.

[1/4]
>>
It is a silent sensation that signals the attack, not even a motion let alone a spoken command. On instinct the three of you stalk closer, slipping in under the wary watch of the rebels. The foremost sentries are taken down without a sound, the foliage itself seeming to launch from the ground and envelop them before they can scream. As more rebels disappear from every corner of their position, someone finally realises something is wrong.

“武器に!” Your trusty Second Crane cries out, firing a burst of peacekeeper rounds into the foliage without effect. More to alert the others than hit a target, is your guess. “To arms! She is among us!”

The rebel position explodes into chaos, your pack leaps upon the prey like a Xenogheist on a warren of Rabbitohs. In seconds, moments, the rebel squad disintegrates into a panic as you and the other Cradlers take them down one by one. Soon it’s down to just the handful of survivors scattering. Crane, Bones and Terrier try to slip out of the killzone via a dried up creek bed. But they find you there, waiting.

“It’s over, Crane.” You grin from your position on a fall tree trunk over the creek, unable to resist the temptation to gloat in your kill. Your Second and his comrades stop in their tracks, dead in the sights of your rifle loaded with peacekeeper tags. “I have the high ground.”

“I would not be so sure, Snake Eyes.” The easy tone in Crane’s voice causes your grin to slip. “You never did learn to mind your surroundings…”

At that precise moment Alexander Hail emerges from the bushes on your flank, firing in your direction. You barely have to move so as to reposition yourself out of the line of fire, and Sharky tackles him to the ground a second later. The pack instinct of a Cradler, never to be underestimated.

“Really?” You laugh, sweeping back around to put a few rounds in your Corporal. “Crane, baby, that’s insulting. I’m insulted. You thought you could flank -me- in the jungle?”

But Crane isn’t there.

“No.” For a dreadful moment you can’t pinpoint where Crane’s voice is coming from. “But I made you look.”

You leap aside as Crane lunges around the other side of the tree, his knuckleblade knife scoring a mark against the trunk. He isn’t holding back, and neither are you for that matter. Where would the fun in that be?

“Go!” Crane roars over his shoulder as you set into a fighting stance.

Bones and Terrier don’t need to be told twice, sprinting off into the foliage in the precious few moments while Sharky tangles with the squad leader and Mafia tracks down other fleeing rebels. As for you, you have more pressing concerns. Ducking another swing and lunging forward, you balk as you read Crane’s feint and adjust your swing. He’s no pussycat, but you only need an opening to draw your mag pistol and sink a peacekeeper round in.

“It is not so easy, is it Natalya?” Crane hisses with the exertion of fending off your attack, stopping you from getting a proper grip. “When your opponent is facing you.”

“What in the Void is that supposed to mean?” Your eyes narrow as you try to build some distance, just enough to plug in. If you hadn’t been so focussed on the fight, if you hadn’t been so pumped full of adrenaline, maybe understanding would have come to you.

Instead you feint left and slink right, drawing your mag pistol to pop off a shot. But Crane doesn’t give you the opening, his knuckleblade slamming down on your firearm and fouling your aim. He follows up, closing the distance with some fancy footwork that a girl like you kind of envies. He is all water and flowing movement against your stone and raw strength. It’s a finely balanced distance the two of you struggle in, split-moments stretching into seconds. To give you too much distance will expose him to another shot, to get too close will put him at the mercy of your superior strength in a grapple. On an even playing field, with a blade that gave him some distance to work with, he might have had you.

But you are a daughter of the Green, and nowhere in the 'verse is there such a thing as an even playing field. You fake a misstep and this time it fools him, he launches forward point-first at your knee. Instead of faltering to the side you spring forward, gripping the fist of his wielding the knife in your left hand and slamming your right elbow down on his arm. To be perfectly honest you didn’t even think twice about it, taking the knife out of play was unrestrained instinct on your part. But you may have overdone it there. If you didn’t know better, you wouldn’t have thought you even made an impression. But you felt the bone break.

“Oh scud!” You leap back, bouncing on your heels with your mag pistol trained on him. “Um… look our resident cabbage will get that fixed right up in no time, I’m sure.”

Crane narrows his eyes at you, and despite the advantage you hold right now you have to make an effort not to flinch. You’ve seen groan men squeal at broken bones, but Crane barely lets out a muffled grunt. His faint grimace being the only outward sign of the immense pain he’d be in.

“Look I’m really sorry, honest. But you had a knife! It was pointy and everything!” You smile sheepishly behind the sights of your mag pistol. “…Do you want to keep going? Please say no.”

To your relief Crane sighs, clutching his broken arm and looking down at the forest floor.

“No… I yield.”

Well thank the Green’s Gooch for that. You think to yourself. You really didn’t want to have to go looking for a new Second. You like this one.

We need to talk to Crane after this. We also need to talk to Boy and make sure he knows that if he gives us another "special requirement" on another assignment, there might be a "problem" or "complication".

>We need to talk to Crane after this
Apologize for the arm and subtle third degree for that crack? Yeah.
But it's a bit late in the game to talk to Boy about being his hachetwoman. Best we can do is get enough of the Xenophobe voters to veto any attempt to get us to kill any Company Xenos. Hopefully.

you've been pushing this for two threads now, and I've been telling you, it is a stupid idea to talk to your superior officer in a way that might be perceived as a threat or a challenge to his authority. Reminder that Casket (probably) killed her previous superior and got away with it.
Casket was also very much into the idea of killing one of the rebels.
My theory is that her previous sergeant was uncooperative/unwilling to follow an order of that sort and got offed to keep him quiet as well as replacing him with someone less scrupulous.

I'm not saying do it with others around, and I am attempting to convey they impression we should convey, not the exact words. Boy knows we can get the job done and he knows to give assignments to the best suited squads. Casket is a cold bit hand would do something like that without hesitation. Heavenly literally thinks hes on a mission from God, so he wouldn't have an issue with it. We shouldn't be direct an say we wont do it, but we should say "gee willikers LT, that assignment sure bummed me out, I sure hope you wont give me another one like that." Saying an assignment would make us feel like shit wont make Boy blink unless there is some level of resistance or warning of resistance. Better to make our objections known before they are needed, otherwise he will not budge.
>>4907611
Its never too late for it. Too late would be before any mission where we are told to do something like that.
I wasn't talking about the arm. He almost certainly knows we shot the bug on our last op. I also believe his Void Nightmare involved getting betrayed, so seeing someone he fought alongside get shot by someone they thought they could trust would definitely put some ice in his gut.
>>4907863
Not an explicit challenge, merely stating that we arnt the best for such an objective and be implicit with the rest. If we are given another such order that is less palatable, such as killing human children, literal millions of xenos(probably of the plant or turtle variety), or, god help us, a member of our squad, we can try to disobey it in the best way possible. I mealy wish to find the best way of minimizing how much we anger our CO and maximizing our odds of getting written of from accomplishing such objectives.
>>
>>4908053
>Its never too late for it
We already did it. We refuse the next one, he can just threaten to leak the info we did it to the Rebels, and then it's our word against the man who let them know. Sure hope the next one is nobody we like, because it's too late to be anyone but Eichmann
"Just following Orders."
>>
>>4908059
Like hell it is. I was kind of annoyed with Forgotten that we were only given the option of talking to one person after the op on the way back to base. We should have been able to talk to Boy after debriefing. As I said, I don't want to flat out refuse to do it if told to. I want Boy to know that we are not the squad for such a job. And if we still get the order and its someone we care about. We do the rest of the op. we do it to perfection, better even. And we discreetly get the person marked for death out of there. Its unlikely that boy will kill, fire, or demote us, though if he finds out he will likely punish us. He is a practical man.He wont beat a squad that accomplishes 95% of objectives with flying colors for purposefully botched tertiary objectives, at least no more than once. that seems like a gamble worth taking.
>>
>>4908059
>We refuse the next one, he can just threaten

2 = You mark out several likely spots, uncertain which exact path the rebels will take but narrowing it down enough that they will certainly encounter at least one trap.

What is the rebel trainees mission during this exercise anyways?

If it is just 'survive' then it doesn't make too much sense for them to wander around the jungle in small squads, so they've got to be trying to achieve something, right?

By the way, something that has been bugging me for a while: what was the name of the Archmage in Prince's BCQ? Anton...

Antonius? Antonidas? Antonissimo? Was it ever something we could've just guessed or was it some really obscure nonsenical Anton* name?

Well first it is 'survive' yes, but they are also expected to hunt you and patrol the designated zone between several agreed checkpoints.

I was thinking of some scoring system for how many times they reach a checkpoint to justify them always being on the move instead of hunkering down. But honestly hadn't elaborated on it more than that in my head.

==========================

Kerim’O’Kas was starting to hate the jungle. The humidity alone… Sure, it beat the arid highlands of Dis, but she constantly felt like that inbetween moment of getting out of a warm pool and starting to sunbake. By the Sunken Islands she missed home. But she had more important things to worry about more, and people needed her. She had to be an example to her comrades, anything less was unworthy of the cause.

But a fresh sea breeze would have been a fine thing indeed.

“Indigo?!” The rebel next to O’Kas called up in to forest ceiling in Imperial pidgin. “Are you alright?”

…yeah… yeah, I think I’m okay!” Came the somewhat hesitant response.

It was a pleasant surprise, given that one mintue ago the unfortunate rebel had been flung up in an explosion of leaves and was now suspended in a tangle of ropes several metres off the ground above them. This ‘Snake Eyes’ was reported to be an master of jungle warfare, and this daily torment was apparently her idea of training them. One day O’Kas would have to go back to her academy drill sergeants and thank them for being such a bunch of softies.

“Okay just hang in there, Indigo!”

“Are you trying to be funny right now, Werkal?” The Asandi rebel, and it was an odd thing indeed to see an armed Asandi anywhere, managed to sound appropriately indignant at his current situation.

“What? No, I mean it!” His Quexi comrade on the ground croaked. “We’ll cut you down in just a second.”

No sooner than had Werkal spoken when three peacekeeper rounds slammed into the net, and the rebel tangled in them. The rebel Indigo gave a piteous mewl of pain before falling silent, those electrifying tags could really mess the Avian species up.

“Contact! East flank!”

“Hssk. Oh boy, here we go again… Hssk.

The remaining rebels flew into a flurry of actions, running and diving for cover. They nearly set off the half-dozen more traps that they had just spotted and marked out after Indigo’s mishap.

“Watch that ridge!” The voidborn raider ‘Terrier’ snarled at the nearest wide-eyed rebels in fluent Imperial Pigdin.

“What?” The nearest wide-eyed rebels stared at her in confusion. “The shots are coming from the east!”

“Did she fragging stutter? Eyes on that ridge!” Kerim’O’Kas warbled sharply. She liked Terrier, she might be one of the few off-worlders that actually believed in what they were doing. Few of the pirates seemed to share her devotion, although admittedly they weren’t as temperamental either. O’Kas trusted Terrier’s judgement for the most part too, but all the same she crawled, with some difficulty, through the undergrowth to voice her own uncertainty. “Why -are- we shoring up on the opposite flank?”

“Because She knows we know She’s on the east flank.” Terrier muttered, eyes warily scanning jungle ahead from her crouched position. “And if Snake Eyes knows we know, she knows we know we’ll try to backtrack, you know?”

“Yes…” O’Kas nods. Then she shakes her head. “No. I don’t comprehend.”

“I’m -saying-” Terrier bites out each word, breathing through her nose in what appeared to be a human sign of frustration. O’Kas liked her, but she could be quite prickly sometimes. “That if I was her and I had a couple of spare guys while we’re pinned down here, that ridge is where I’d put them to cut off our exit.”

“So we watch the ridge?”

“So we watch the ridge.”

“You’re sure it’s clear?”O’Kas cleared her throat, the human tongue was tricky. Especially given that her species didn’t have tongues so to speak.

It had been hours now, huddled in the undergrowth trying to avoid stepping on traps and the odd peacekeeper tags sent their way to keep their heads down. No sign of exactly where from, but it must be an elevated position and some distance away. Kerim’O’Kas had seen the effects of close-range peacekeeper shots on Perspira during the Troubles, this weren't that. Husk said She was just playing with them, and Terrier pointed out that if they had a proper assault in mind they’d have done it immediately before the squad dug in. But they couldn’t wait here forever before their next checkpoint and resupply, so they had covered as best they could Convict while he marked out a path through the trap littered zone.

“Yeah, it’s clear. It’d be kind of embarrassing if the bomb expert got taken out by a trap, huh?” Kerim’O’Kas didn’t like the raider Convict. For one thing, his very name implied he had a criminal record. “Relax, your highness. It’s perfectly safe, I defused it. Pretty simple contraption actually, easy to spot and easy to disarm.”

“Why do you keep calling me ‘highness’? I am not royalty.” O’Kas trilled, Her crest ruffling huffily.

“It’s a… nevermind.” Convict rolled his eyes, crinkling up his expression in a way that was particularly unappealing on his flesh human face. “You Drax really can’t take a joke, can you?”

“We can too take a joke!” That settled it. The convicted criminal was definitely here least favourite.

Sure, you people can take a joke and I can win a beauty cont-“ Whatever off-hand insult Convict was about to offer was abruptly cut off when a log twice his size suspended on vines as thick as arms swept down with a sharp crack and flung the squad’s bomb expert several feet in the air before gravity corrected his direction with her usual mercilessness.

Kerim’O’Kas ducked, as did everyone else, but nothing followed. After a few moment she peered over into the pit.

“You’re right. It is kind of embarrassing.”

Convict could only offer a pained groan in response.

(1) Lesson Three

Leadership Test: The Finer the Bait, the Shorter the Wait – Selling the Bait
> 50DC
> Badass Bandanna +5DC
> Tranquil Gaze +5DC, +1 Re-Roll
> Transhuman +2DC
> Cradleborn: Jungle Environment +15DC, +1 Re-Roll
> MDC Petal, GNR Nines and TPR Bones -10DC, +1 Adverse Re-Roll

I know there would be more involved in deceiving a squad of rebels, but I think a leadership test is the best way to represent it in this instance.
Critfail = Well that was embarrassing. Take an AV save. Training exercise ends.
Double Fail = Taking the ‘fake’ out of faked injury. +1 Adverse Physical Re-Roll.
0 = The rebels don’t take the bait, but this is more due to obliviousness than an wisdom on their part. Lesson ends.
1 = The rebels don’t fall for your wounded act, but there is still a chance this could result in them learning. Lesson Learnt test -10DC, +2 Adverse Re-rolls.
2 = The rebels have bought your moment of weakness and give pursuit, now you need to lead them on a merry chase and give them the slip. Physical test.
3 = Hook, line and sinker. The rebels jump at the chance at turning the tables, completely unaware you’re running circles around them as they give chase. +1 Physical Re-Roll. +1 Wetwork Re-Roll. +1 Leadership Re-Roll to Lesson learnt.
Double Pass = Appear weak when you are strong. +1 Physical Re-Roll.
Critpass = Master of Deception. You’re great at this, you should have been an actor. +2DC Leadership (permanent). +1 Save to Wetwork.

3 = Run, run, run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me. I’m a Cradler, man. +1 Wetwork Re-Roll.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-o62y_I19UI&ab_channel=FilmicBoxOfficial – Nines go BRRRRT

“She’s wounded.” You can hear the harsh snap-click of Hassk’s tone, the Zaan ranger always was one to look out for any opportunity to shift the balance of odds in their favour. “And she’s close. If we can take her now…”

A thin cut on the leg is just the selling point called for, enough blood to convince them it’s serious but not anything that will actually hinder your performance. Just like that time back home with the Carnotaur that was infringing on your territory.

I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy

“I don’t know…” That must be Bones, you wandered where he had ran off to. “Petal may be right, it sure wasn’t us that wounded her. Could be a trap.”

“Maybe. Maybe not. We won’t get a better chance at coming out on top than right now. Let’s go.”

“++Acknowledgement. Revising possible scenarios with updated information.++”

"You're the boss..."

It isn’t long until the rebels find you. Or rather, you -let- them find you in the middle of bandaging your ‘wound’.

“There! She’s over there!”

“Go! Take her!”

You leap into the bush with what you feel is the appropriate amount of flustered panic and desperate determination. The trick isn’t outrunning the rebels, that’s easy. The real skill is hanging back enough so that they don’t lose sight of you, but not so close that they might actually bag you with a lucky shot.

In a few short minutes you’ve arrived at the killzon, and you’re not even out of breath. At first glance it’s an innocent looking grove in the jungle, the last person fleeing prey would want to be caught out in. But the dense foliage belies the wealth of dried up creekbeds and hollow dead trunks that lie just out of easy sight beneath the tall grass.

Slipping out of the rebels sights and doubling back to pick off the stragglers in the pursuit will be child’s play. The foremost rebels hunting in a group will spend precious minutes trying to ferret you out before realising something is wrong. You almost want to pat yourself on the back there and then, but the job’s only half done. The animal calls have fallen silent, but given your arrival and the ruckus of rebels trying to catch up, that’s not unexpected. As you pick out a likely spot, it’s only your heightened Cradler senses that detect a faint whirring sound that seems out of place here.

whirrrrr-

“++Confirmation.++” You blink at the familiar robotic voice, gut sinking to your boots. “++Target acquired.++”

rrrr-click-BRRRRRRRTTTTT

The trees and foliage disintegrate in an explosion of high-intensity peacekeeper tags fired at close range. Really close range. There’s no chance in the Void that you’re able to dodge out of the way and avoid all of them, and despite their supposedly ‘non-lethal’ status this many tags at this close range will frag up anybody ten ways to Sunday. As you fling yourself blindly into what you -hope- is something approaching cover one thought whines at the back of your mind at your fight-or-flee predator instinct takes over.

How in Cradle’s Sweet Cunt did the voiddamn clanker get here first?!

In the meantime, how should this wound be represented? Keep in mind that Crane's broken arm was considered an 'injury', so we need something more severe than that. Nat is severely debilitated, probably having lost the use of a limb, and is likely to have added a new scar to her collection.

Peacekeeper tags through and through, puncturing her gut on the side (and maybe doing temp damage to the hip) and paralyzing a leg

>SGT ‘Snake Eyes’ Natalya is WOUNDED
> Broken Ribs & Split Hand -15DC, +1 Adverse Re-Roll I decided against an injury as a result of close combat with Nines, the results of which will be determined in the next two rolls
Due to the example of your dogged determination, at the conclusion of the exercise there may be a bonus Lesson Learnt test

Peacekeeper rounds are supposed to be non-lethal, stunning a target into submission. But when you don’t stay down at the first volley, Nines doesn’t hesitate to keep up the right of fire as you attempt to stumble away into cover. Tall grass and thin branches distintegrate under the impact of hundreds of rounds launched in a matter of seconds. With this many rounds, and at this close range, something was always going to give.

You feel the break of bone on your left side, gasping in pain as you finally huddle against a branch fallen across a creekbed. Nines doesn’t let up, each impact against the other side of the trunk sending tiny spasms of agony as your broken ribs are jolted about.
You place your right hand against the ground to push yourself up into a better position, then cry out in pain. A quick glance at the hand reveals the extent of the injury, a split right in between your middle and ring finger. The laceration is several inches in length and bleeding profusely, rendering your right hand virtually useless. You don’t even remember how it happened, perhaps from shrapnel caused by the whirlwind of peacekeeper tags or when you fell from the impact of the first volley.

You’ve broken a rib. More than one, most likely. And your primary hand looks like a bloody pulp. But you aren’t coughing up blood, so you know your lungs are intact if not happy with the situation. As for your hand, well you’ve got two of them don’t you? A smart girl would call it a day, chuck in the towel and ask for a medic once the rebels were done laughing at her. A smart girl would know when they’re beat. You’ve been accussed of many things in your time, a lot of them even true.

But being a smart girl has never been one of them.

You peek over the trunk as best you can without exposing yourself, adrenaline not exactly dulling the pain but relegating it to a secondary concern. Measuring the distance between this relatively open killzone and the nearest thickset jungle, you steel yourself for the moment when the gunner will need to reload. There’s only one way out of this killzone of your own devising that doesn’t lead straight back into the pursuing rebels, and that’s through Gunner ‘Nines’.

1 = Target performing evasive manoeuvres, locking on. Bit by bit you close the distance with Nines, but you’re at a disadvantage and will still need to escape from the other rebels even if you beat your squaddie in close quarters. +1 Adverse Close Encounter Re-Roll. +1 Adverse Wetwork Re-Roll.
2 = Duck and weave, slide and slither. Using the scant cover to maximum effect, hugging dried creeklines and trusting dead trunks to give you the reprieve you need to close the distance.
3 = Hungry for payback. The jungle is your playground, leaping from tall grass and swinging from branch to branch with one hand, you launch into the fray and rob the machine of his main advantage. +1 Close Encounter Re-Roll.
Double Pass = I ain’t got time to bleed. +3DC removed from your Wounded detriment.

I say alpha instinct.

That additional reroll is something great to have, especially if we can chain it to reactivate each turn.

I'm also curious if we get it and rite of passage, we can instantly get everyone else in our squad to comrade. That would be a single massive boost to our combat effectiveness as all the troopers go from +5 to +8 DC and ensure that our squad maintains its trained makeup, regardless.
>>
>>4913358
I dunno, finishing out predator quirks and getting that DC66 to make wound MORE non/combatants targets seems very onbrand for Nat.
>>
>>4913364
But we already have that. Remember we cut a swath through the furry rats with it. It was the one thing the 1st purchase session agreed on. Max out predator.
>>
>>4913358

>>
>>4913354
Alpha Instinct.

The Re-roll to Firefights is worth it by itself, but the rest synergizes well with Predator as it increases DC or makes wounding easier. As the Savis have shown, armor is a bitch. Add to that High Calibre or Pulse Rifle upgrades and the team will be a snowballing rapetrain.

Amplified Physique isn't bad but it's def the less important branch.

And unfortunately Rite of Passage only works on new Squaddies, not the ones already in our team. So it activates only if we need to replace a dead or wounded comrade. Still pretty stronk if you ask me though.
>>
>>4913358

I really like Alpha Instinct too. I think this might be a hard sell, but I'd really like to see us acquire some of the voidborn secrets after that - specifically the Aura family of skills. I think many might prefer closing out the Genemods completely, which I understand. I just think that the mainly Physical bonuses we get from that tree are worse than some choice skills in Aura. 'Tyrannosapien' is great though.

I like Aura primarily because leadership is such a good and widely used skill. Dipping in for 'empath' for +15 as well as 'iron will' for a reroll would be amazing for us as a squad leader.

I also think RP-wise it'd open up some cool synergies. Both in getting to contrast the green/the void as well as the synergy in theme between Alpha Instinct synergizing with 'our pack' and our 'aura' linking the squaddies together. I might even prefer dipping aura before Alpha Instinct, but definitely before Amplified Physique.

Aura does look really good but since we can only ever unlock 2 skill trees let me counter with Exile Academy

>Eagle Eye allows us to select the hostile casualty when using Sharpshooter Strategem

>+1 Casualty Severity, +5 DC and -10AV to hostiles

>Sharpshooter Strategem allows a 3d100 roll (DC 50) with each success being a casualty when all Way of the Gun perks unlocked

>Other +1 re-roll stuff with bonuses to DC

And it synergizes with Marked Prey and Venomous
>>
>>4913657
I think this can make sense as an evolution of the character, though given the opportunity I prefer voidborn. I'm not sure if I like the idea of 'civilizing' Snake Eyes with stuff like 'Bushido' and 'Chivalry', but that might just be flavortext. I think we're both in agreement that Cyber isn't really an option that makes sense though?

With regards to skills: Exile academy has Sharpshooter, while Voidborn Secrets has Unmake. These are identical in purpose and similar in power. Unmake gets a +20 better DC while Sharpshooter can probably be improved with gear. Both can select the hostile casualty, both get three casualties when fully upgraded. Largely interchangeable trees with different flavor.
I think Unmake allowing you to exceed the use limit is cool. A mark against it is that i cant see how it would synergize with Venomous even though it should by RAW. Probably still works with Marked Prey.

I'm really unimpressed with the Close Combat tree, Way of the Blade, myself. That's primarily from assuming you can only 'equip' and use one melee weapon at a time. If you can 'equip' them all at the same time and get all the rerolls at once that changes since the rerolls with doubles and critfail protection make it an 'autowin all Close Combat tests from now on' skill tree. Very good, but very specialized. I'm not too charmed but I can acknowledge the situational power.

Meanwhile prescience is quite the opposite, a 'get better at everything tree' which I personally enjoy. Especially the mechanics of trading failure now for maluses later is always fun.

I think that the coolest part of Exile Academy that Voidborn doesn't have an answer to is +1 Stratagem and +1 Order per round. I'm personally not a huge fan but there's really nothing else like it and would (to me) be the sole reason to go for Exile Academy.

TL;DR Cyber is shit, fight me.
>>
>>4913705
I wouldn't be too wary of Nat giving into 'civilized' ideals through the Exile tree - Crane employs the Way of the Blade and he was a goddamn Yakuza. Besides, Nat has her (sort of) own code as a Cradler.

But yes, I agree with the other Anon but not for the same reasons. Sharpshooter is nice but not the priority there - Four Warrior Winds is.

Getting more Lead By Example Stratagems (or Sharshooter down the line) means proccing Predator (and if we get it, Alpha Instinct) more often, which translates to more kills and more chances to survive. More Stratagems per turn means we can attack AND employ Tactical Analysis (and one of the Exile's skill empowers that btw). Exile gives a Leadership re-roll and one more Squaddie order through FWW and better Close Encounters through FWW and Way of the Blade, synergizing with Maw & Claw.

Voidborn is cool, don't get me wrong. Exile is just too much value - and there's something fascinating in having a character who can tear apart bulkier xenos thanks to sheer physical prowess.
>>
>>4913358
Rite of passage is also thematically appropriate to our training right now.
>>
>>4913705
>I'm really unimpressed with the Close Combat tree, Way of the Blade, myself.

So am I actually and after reading what you've written I'm more inclined to pick the Voidborn tree. You make some good arguments

We do have a work around for the strategems and orders.

>Camaraderie
Untested Rank-and-File: Less than 50% of your squad is Comrade Status or Higher. 1 Strategem and 1 Squaddie Order per turn. +0DC to Firefight. You contribute +5DC to Firefights.
Experienced Veterans: At least 50% of your squad is Comrade Status or Higher. 2 Strategems and 2 Squaddie Orders per turn. +10DC to Firefight. You contribute +7DC to Firefights.
Elite Operators: At least 50% of your squad is Battle Brother Status and none are lower than Comrade Status. 3 Strategems and 3 Squaddie Orders per turn. +1 Re-Roll and +20DC to Firefight. You contribute +9DC to Firefights.
Band of Brothers: Your squad is 100% Battle Brother Status: Hidden bonus.

The biggest bonus for Path of the Exile is the increase in the number of uses for the strategems of Hold, Shock & Wetwork. It vastly increases our staying power in a prolonged firefight.
>>
>>4913358
>>4913391

Just saying, have nothing for increased survivability right now. And we will get unlucky again. I am fine just splashing Amp. Pys for regen then moving on to the other tree and finishing it off after. If we miss an engagement due to being too injured, we are plain losing loot and "exp". Long run I think this is the better plan.
>>
>>4914369
As we've been shown, the loss of squad members (temporary or not) and the inclusion of outer fighters downgrades the Camaradie bonus, so it is a bit unreliable. I'd prefer a more solid alternative.

Also, I have mentioned that the increased LbE stratagems are a major upside of Exile so you're preaching to the choir here.

>>4914664
I get what you're saying but it isn't practical. Alpha Instinct has much more value together with Predator than AP. Just look at Pack Mentality - increasing the DC in our favor has always been the best way to survive. Not to mention that the discounted Genemod means that we're rewarded for going all (or close) in a single tree rather than branch out. Between AI and AP, the former rewards this approach more.

Maximum survival at this point is going AI + Pack Mentality and buy Pulse Rifles - once a kill is made, that's a +20 to Firefight with an additional Re-roll.

For a state-of-the-art design chassis, advancing through the jungle terrain at a speed of 20km/h took up minimal processing power compared to the flurry of simulations this unit had conducted during their pursuit. He, for some reason the humans Unit EK-939//79 had spent substantial time with referred to this unit as ‘he’, had successfully determined that the rebel operational effectiveness would be adversely affected by as much as 53% if counter-measures were not been taken, such as their presence in the most likely intercept point. The alternative, that subject ‘Snake Eyes’ was indeed wounded and fleeing in earnest, would only result in a temporary 11% reduction in squad combat effectiveness without this units presence. The course of action for an optimal outcome with those numbers was a straightforward calculation.

They did not emulate the human emotion ‘pleasure’, but they were satisfied that their cogitation of the anticipated scenarios had resulted in an advantageous position. That subject ‘Snake Eyes’ had not capitulated after the first on-target volley was not entirely unanticipated, although unit EK-939//79 had rated their threat assessment following a successful firing solution to be Low-to-Medium. This appeared correct at first instance, but further recalibrations following additional bursts without success showed this assessment to be erroneous as subject ‘Snake Eyes’ continued to make ground in between the scant cover on offer.

“++Advisement. Surrender is the most logical outcome. This unit will not inflict further injury on you in that scenario.++” EK-939//79 predicted a Minimal-to-Low successful outcome in attempted negotiations with this subject. But making the attempt came at no cost to current motor functions. “++Caution. The same cannot be said for the alternative.++”

When the subject finally closed the distance despite a fierce volley at near-point-blank range, this unit adopted standard close-quarters combat procedures. However, the training nature of the current scenario demanded that EK-939//79 adopt non-lethal approaches to subduing object. With his rapid cogitators identifying subject ‘Snake Eyes’ as favouring her left side, he launched a rapid blow of pistons into the right side of the target. Two connected, and the subject elicited a large exhalation of breath that EK-939//79 correctly assessed as an organic exhibiting pain. This was further substantiated by the string of verbal abuse from the subject.

All of EK-939//79’s scenarios that involved confirmed application of kinetic force with the wounded side had resulted in the subject being successfully subdued. Absent any alternative as to why the initial blow had not resulted in a success, he launched his piston again into the ribs of subject ‘Snake Eyes’. This arm was currently straining to continue the blows on the right side, held at bay by the impressive organic musculature of the organic. Against all simulations, against all calculated assessment of physical strength, the subject forced the steel pistons back with their left hand and grabbed EK-939//79’s helm-plate with their wounded right.

“Ah! Sunnava BITCH!!”

Upon in-depth review of the recordings later, EK-939//79 could not accurately assess whether the exclamation of the subject occurred before or after the impact to his primary camcorder.

EK-939//79 registered the kinetic force of the blow as minimal, no cracks had appeared on his sensors. However, the internal organic fluids of subject has been sprayed right across his primary camcorder, a blotch of red wiped into an opaque stain by the impact of the blow now blotted out his vision. EK-939//79’s simulations had not accounted for this possibility. In a whirlwind of recalibrations and inconclusive simulations that an organic might equate with ‘panic’, EK-939//79 stumbled on the uneven terrain and registered the application of pressure on their chassis and exterior motors.

>As we've been shown, the loss of squad members (temporary or not) and the inclusion of outer fighters downgrades the Camaradie bonus, so it is a bit unreliable. I'd prefer a more solid alternative.

If we get the alpha instinct rite of passage, that should proc if we get attached rebels. It makes sense thematically. Inducting them into our squad.

You’re breathing is ragged and shaky as you stare down at the twitching chassis of Nines, his damaged camcorder spinning about uselessly as he tries to register the arm you’ve torn clean from his socket. It’s over in the bush there… somewhere. He’ll need a mechanic to take a good look at him and jury rig some repairs… but he’ll live. Sort of. He’s a machine, you know what you mean.

For a moment you consider fetching it for him, the arm that is. Making sure the rebels find the damn thing when they get here. But then you remember that the stupid heartless clanker fragging punched you in your fragging broken ribs! Merciless bastard... You wince as the pain comes back in full force now that the adrenaline is wearing off. The calls of shouting rebels finally catching up rips you back to the immediate danger of the present. You don’t so much as disappear into the jungle as you do stumble off into it, staggering away as best you can with the sound of approaching hunter too close for comfort.

That could have gone better certainly, but at least you came out on top. And that’s all that really matters in the end, isn’t it?

Still, the other advantages of FWW remain and they're damn good.

No need to go overboard for a simple training. There are limits to recklessness.

And speaking of builds, I have a question for you Forgotten - are the Pulse Rifle and Hi-Cal Maglock upgrades exclusive to each other?

We've done our job pretty well here, can't ask for much more. At the end of the day we do still need to be in fighting condition otherwise things are going to go to shit (and we'll miss out on experience and loot)

>I think it works only if whoever joins does so on a permanent basis but Forgotten is the ultimate judge of that
I would say it's perfectly fine, so long as anons understand that this would include closer ties and positive relations with the rebels among the squaddies.

>are the Pulse Rifle and Hi-Cal Maglock upgrades exclusive to each other?
I would think they are, Pulse Rifles are energy based weapons as opposed to the Auxl-tier explosive balistics of Hi-Cal Maglocks. If you did select both, I'd allow anons to pick and choose according to each engagement where it should sensibly be allowed.

Not worth risking getting taken out of the campaign entirely for a training session, we already taught them plenty and I kinda regret not giving up after getting injured. We have the one Sensei reroll, we can use it for the last lesson, but I'd rather not risk doing two lessons without further bonuses.

Could we 'cheat' and return to the encampent for medical aid, in the hopes of either getting +2 vitals instead of +1, or getting back into the fight quickly enough that we can impart both lessons with a +1 Vitality?

If we don't want the rebels at the base to be aware of this maybe we could ask the Lieutenant or one of our fellow Sgts to send a medic out to help patch us up. I think it might be worth breaking whatever informal rules of enagement exist so we can impart a full lessons to the rebels.

If we manage to keep it secret and make ourselves seem invulnerable to the rank-and-file that is a nice bonus.

Question. So for regen, we heal 1 health after an engagement. So what exactly defines an engagement? Like is it an entire mission then we auto heal by 1 during downtime? Or is it like 1 firefight basically? Like we did dedicated combat 3 times last mission with brief pauses in between; would it proc every time in between the fights? Like between the 1st in the ball room, 2nd in the back of the estate, 3rd when we went to support Banshee?
>>
>>4914825
It should generally be after every firefight, but only to the status you were at the start of the firefight.

You will naturally recover over downtime periods (or less than naturally depending on how intensive the required care is).

>SGT ‘Snake Eyes’ Natalya improves from CRITICAL to WOUNDED. Bandaged Hand and Ribs -10DC to all tests.

Step one is staunching the bleeding, which is surprisingly difficult given the lose of use to your right hand. But you manage, even if you did go through almost your entire medkit supply of bandages doing so. Step two is setting your ribs, and you don’t have any trouble recalling just how much that hurt. Were it not for the twig clamped between your teeth as you went about doing the deed, the rebels would probably have heard your screams all the way from the cave hollowed out in the side of this vine strewn cliff-face that you have turned into a temporary shelter. Third, and most importantly, is preventing infection. A bad wound can quickly turn worse and then lethal if left unattended, and they don’t call it jungle fever for nothing. At least you think that’s where the term comes from. Your enhanced genemods to most of the work, the potential diseases of the Dis jungles are nothing compared to the horrors of the afflictions that the Green could offer, but you make sure to clean the wounds and replace the bandages twice a day all the same. Jawtox infection was the death of your older brother, and Voidmother knows you’re not going out like that. Not if you can help it. By the end of the weak you’re down to using broadleaf plants as substites for your empty supply of tissue bandages, and you’ve gone through your entire batch of limited anti-bacterial wipes.

You prefer not to consider your absence as reprieve to the handful of rebels still roughing it in the field. Rather, it’s you like to think of it as letting them stew in the discomfort and hardships of the jungle while they remain uncertain as to whether you are watching their every move.

You’re not, by the way. You’re here sipping on some homebrewed cocoa that you had stashed away for just such an occasion. But they don’t know that.

And you'll be back in the game soon enough...

===========================================

This lesson will require several progressively harder wetwork tests in close succession, and possibly a Close Encounter test to bag the leader. Re-rolls will not regenerate in between tests if used.

Double Pass = Wait, did you hear that? +1 Adverse Wetwork Re-Roll.

1 = Awake and alert. You’d been hoping exhaustion and the lapse in time would dull the rebels senses. Not so. +1 Adverse Wetwork Re-Roll.
2 = Walk softly, and carry a big gun. You’re right on top of the rebels. But that was the easy part.
3 = Like a thief in the night. You’ve infiltrated the rebel position, naturally. Now comes the ‘hard’ part. +1 Wetwork Re-Roll.
Double Pass = Bagged the medic (AKA Ordered a side of salad). At the conclusion of this lesson, you might further recover from your wounds.
Critpass = Ghost of the Green. Next wetwork test ‘Infiltrate the rebel position’ is auto-passed, proceed directly to attempting to take out the leader. +3DC to Wetwork (permanent).

I agree (duh) but these rolls were absolute shit no matter how you look at it.

A 50 DC is basically a coin toss, and ending up with one head over 6 times is just plain bad luck.

Critpass = Damn that Terrier can punch. Lose 1 Vitality. Training exercise ends.
Double Fail = Take one on the chin. Take an AV save.
0 = Okay… you got me. Tackled to the ground by Terrier and Hask, the rebels have you surround. Training exercise ends.
1 = First you have to catch me! Breaking free of Terrier and Hask, it is still possible to escape as the rebels close in, but it will require a difficult Physical test. Lesson ends.
2 = You take down TPR Terrier and break free of Hassk, before sprinting into the jungle. Lesson ends. But maybe you can try again with the other squad…
3 = You dispatch TPR Terrier and Squad Leader Hassk, which was the plan all along, before escaping in the ensuing confusion. Lesson learnt test.
Double Pass = Bagged the medic (AKA Ordered a side of salad)…somehow. At the conclusion of this lesson, you might further recover from your wounds. That was the plan all along, right?
Critpass = RAMPAGE!!! Rebel squad eliminated. Lesson learnt. auto-success.

Alright honestly this isn't so bad. We don't get to teach any more lessons but we did fucking well early on AND this isn't a live fire combat situation. No real enemies, no real death so... it went well, especially if we give them the praise they deserve. We can't act all high and mighty, they got us good.
>>
Alright lads, it was fun while it lasted. You did pretty well on the training exercise, all things considered.

The rebels will be adept in jungle warfare and a nightmare for conventional Savis forces. However, they'll likely still be outmatched by Cradler Auxilliaries.

Narrative post will be up tomorrow. In the meantime, have a good night gents!

Speaking of snakes, what's our plan to deal with Jorus? Guy was a general in the Imperial Legion, and I wouldn't put it past him to try and organize a dramatic return to Royal favor, especially if his boys are part of the invasion force.
>>
>>4916717
Yeah he will definitely betray the rebellion at some point. Should've bagged him when we had the chance.
>>
>>4916717
He was a general? He only boasted about being the greatest sharpshooter in his Legio and climbing the hierarchy after some marriage as far as I remember
>>
>>4916829
Jorus claimed he was a noble, however bull his actual standing may have been, which already puts him head in shoulders above the literal peon families. Plus, his house would have to be reasonably connected to secure any direct marriage to the royal family.

Maybe not top brass, but I could definitely see some sort of officer's position for him.
>>
>>4916945
Still, I think he's too deep in vengence to actually turn coat. His house is eradicated, his best years are behind him and I'm pretty sure the only thing keeping him alive is just pure spite.

>Wetwork (1) - 2 Success: Walk softly, and carry a big gun. You’re right on top of the rebels. But that was the easy part.
>Wetwork (1) Double Fail: Wait, did you hear that? +1 Adverse Wetwork Re-Roll.
> Wetwork (2) 0 Success: The jig is up! You need to make a difficult Close Encounter roll to break free of the rebels and escape.
> Close Encounter - 0 Success: Okay… you got me. Tackled to the ground by Terrier and Hassk, the rebels have you surround. Training exercise ends.

You’ve made it this far, and it seems to be working a charm as you use the trees to infiltrate the rebel position below you. But all good things come to an end and let’s face it, you have been in better shape. You test a new branch tentatively with one foot and it turns out to be even less stable than you had reckoned. Not the branch itself, but a piece of Yari-Yuri fruit must have been hanging only by a thread as the minute movement sends it spinning off to the jungle floor below.

The fruit doesn’t make much of a sound when it lands, but you freeze all the same. Absolutely motionless, your golden eyes narrow at the rebels below. But the only movement is one of the rebels getting up and spilling his canteen into the foliage… it’s fine. You’re fine.

“Ssshhhhk.” The quill-maned Zaan stands up abruptly, sharp bony beaky clacking. “Do you hear that?”

“Hear what?” Terrier answers in perfect Imperial pidgin, though you don’t know when she left O’Kas’s squad and joined this one. Must have been at the last checkpoint. “Can't hardly hear a voiddamn thing with those fragging Koriswallows mouthing off.”

"That is just my point. The Koris have stopped singing."

…Stay here. I’ll go check out.” Terrier taps the Belcossan medic on the shoulder. “Petal, with me.”

And when you ask 'em, "How much should we give?"
They only answer, “m-“

Petal’s little serenade is cut off in an odd yip-like sound as Terrier whirls on them, finger pointing directly in the musical medic’s face.

“Petal.” No sign of humour in her voice here. “I swear to the Voidmother if I have to listen to one more rendition of these ‘Fortunate Sun’ guys…”

The rest of the conversation is lost as the two squaddies move further on. Perfect. Squad Leader Hassk is all by her lonesome. You crawl down the trunk further, practically upside down and vertical as you draw closer to your prey. The thick cord of vines loops down, ever so slowly, your wounded hand shaking with the effort of holding your weight in place. You’re not planning on strangling the Zaan, you just want to yank her up into the treeline while no one is looking.

[1/3]

Hassk’s quills twitch and you freeze, fashioned noose dangling a foot above her head. For a moment you think you’ve been made, but the Zaan scout scratches her quills and settles back into her spot against the tree trunk you’re currently latched on to.

Closer… closer….

The all-too-familiar pain of peacekeeper tags erupts without warning against your shoulder and back, the involuntary muscle spasm causing you to lose your hold on the tree. In the half-second you have midair as the ground rushing up to you, you think you spotted Bones face splitting in a scud-eating smile as he looks through his rife scope some distance away.
You land. Badly. A lance of red-hot agony sears through your broken ribs as the jungle explodes into noise, rebels popping out from positions even you hadn’t spotted. They’re getting better at this… but that’s scant consolation to you in your current predicament. You need to get out of here. Now!

Hassk, reacting with a speed that implies a crazy reaction time or that it was anticipating something all along, leaps towards you. You side-step, clutching your ribs and shoving the Zaan scout away with your good left hand. You sprint, legs kicking into overdrive as you duck around the tree truck and-

SLAM Terrier bodytackles you into the ground. She’s a little thing, barely half your weight on a good day. On a good day it’d barely register, you’d fling her aside without pausing and make a break for the thick foliage. But it hasn’t been a good day for you, or even a good week. And she hit you right where your ribs are still all fragged up. So, you go down. And you go down hard.

“Watch her teeth!” You can hear Terrier screech as more rebels pile on. “Bitch bites!”

“Get her legs! Get her legs!”

“Ow! My fragging tooth!”

“Hjerjak! Get the taser!”

After much scuffling, a zap or two and a few boot heels that were definitely unnecessary, you finally call it quits.

“Alright! Frag! Okay!” You wave your one free hand in surrender, especially seeing as trying to literally tap out a second didn’t stop the onslaught. “You got me! Ow! Fragging scud! I said you got me, okay?!”

“Yeah.” Terrier grins, sitting on your upper chest with a boot on either side of your cheeks. “I heard ya. I’m just enjoying the view up here, that’s all.”

Hssk. Seeing the Snake underheel.” Husk emerges out of Void knows where with more members from Kerim’O’Kas’s squad.Hssk. Is beautiful sight.”

I've paid my dues
Time after time

“Well done, comrade.” Kerim’O’Kas warbles, “Sorry you had to play the role of bait.”

“Whatever it takes.” The Zaan scout clicks, their very human shrug shedding a few quills. Later you would found out they can actually shoot them like darts. “Nice shooting, Bones.”

I've done my sentence
But committed no crime

“Yeah! That’s how we do!” Bones whoops, high-fiving one of the rebels and chest-bumping Terrier. You didn’t take her for much of a chest-bumper, not Terrier. “Not gonna lie, shooting Snake Eyes was the most fun thing I’ve done since I signed on with this outfit.”

Hssk. She had it coming.” Husk slaps the rebel Hjerjak on the back, earning him a scowl from you which he blithely ignores.

And bad mistakes
I've made a few

“So.” Terrier stands up, allowing you to finally breathe normally. She offers you a hand. Very un-Terrier-like behaviour. Must be the flush of victory. “Sister…”

“Bitch.” Bones coughs.

“Megabitch. Hssk. Husk tries fixing his obviously malfunctioning mask.

I've had my share of sand
Kicked in my face
But I've come through

“Queen bitch of the jungle, let’s say.” Flattery, also something new for Terrier. But you accept her hand as she helps you up. “So. What do we win?”

We are the champions, my friends
And we'll keep on fighting till the end

So my reasoning here is that whilst a party would be great it'll also leave everyone in shit condition if an emergency happens AND it'll cost us. But we can't do nothing, so some great food will have to suffice.

The reason I'm against dropping creds here isn't out of greed. The more we spend now, the less we have for actual, long term squad upgrades later. 20 creds isn't nothing so lets keep em for now

“When we get back I’m gonna treat you ALL to some quality Cradler Cooking.” That seems to make Terrier plenty happy, even if the rebels are a little apprehensive. The lads must have been telling stories. Ah well, you’ll win them over.

“Whatever you say, boss.” Bones grins, handing Petal a medkit as the rebels pack up camp. “You might want to get that hand of yours look at first though, right?"

HsskHsskHssk. I have never seen бocc so battered.” It’s hard to tell whether Husk is coughing or chuckling, but you can hazard a guess. “I did not think anything could make dent in her."

“Hey, I ain’t dead yet. In fact I oooohhh…” You sigh with relief as Petal hit you with a dose of synthezene, just enough to take the edge of the pain off. “Oh you sweet little ceasar salad…”

Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right.

You still don't truck with this affirmative action stuff that's seeing x-rays recruited into the Black Company, but suppose at least with Petal they picked a good one.

“Ain’t you been paying attention, boys?” Terrier grins fiercely, still living up her time in the sun as the one who took down the dreaded Snake Eyes. “If it bleeds, you can kill it.”

The other squaddies consider that little bit of wisdom for a moment.

“What about Nines?” Bones pipes up.

“…” Terrier scratches her neck for a moment, then shrugs. “Yeah, good point. I guess even if it -doesn’t- bleed you can kill it.”

[1/2]

[2/2]

Now that the constant pain is mostly gone, Void bless that little cabbage, you have a bit more time to reflect upon how the training exercise went. Half your squaddies being beat all to hell, yourself included, isn’t the worst thing. The LT will be on your arse about it, more likely than not. You might have downplayed how intensive this jungle training course would be, but hopefully the results speak for themselves. Even if Vinehound Squad is going to be considered combat ineffective for at least the next week. But like you were saying, that’s not the worst part.

The worst part is that Sharky and Mafia are going to give you so. Much. Scud.

But really, it’s not that bad. Your chosen rebels have come leaps and bounds since you started out however many weeks ago. You watch them even now, like an Exile Academy sensei finally seeing his students do a training routine right. Even though they’ve won, and the training exercise is over, the rebels still walk softly and cover their ten’s and two’s. Scanning both the jungle ahead and the next footfall with a healthy caution, making sure at least two of their number are always in line of sight. They may never hold a candle to bona fide Cradler, but it warms the cockles of your shrivelled mercenary hart to see them come this far. And more importantly, to keep up their guard even though the training exercise is over.

The rebels have also formed tighter ties with one another, not to mention the members of Vinehound squad they’ve been eating, sleeping and fighting beside for the past few weeks. Ahead, Terrier brags to Hassk and Kerim’O’Kas about how much worse her particular brand of slavery background was compared to theirs. To your right, one of the other human rebels, Freddie, is educating Petal on the more essential greatest hits they need to look up. To your left, Husk helps the Obadine rebel Hjerjak carry his heavy machine gun, sharing the load despite it not being part of his role. Behind you, Bones chuckles along with the Quexi rebel Werkal at some inside joke of theirs. In hindsight, that they’ve become this close with the rebels is hardly unexpected. But it also makes you uneasy…

But that’s a problem for later, for when the Savis come in force. For now, you just want a soft bed and a warm shower. And probably a quick shag too, but poor Cradler girls don’t always get everything they want. For now, a bed and shower will do.

“It is always the same dream for me, Nat. Always. Every time there’s some new detail I see clearly that I never noticed before.” You don’t move a muscle as Crane continues, him opening up is rarer than a Vinehound going vegan. “The look in his eyes when he knew it was me, the twitch of a smile when he called me 兄貴, ‘brother’. The pattern his blood left on the window. The smell of the aftershave on the 部長 [buchou, boss] when I told them it was done. Every time, it’s something little. Something new.”

I think Crane did something very similar to what we did - kill an ally because of orders from higher up. I guess he cared a lot more for his brother than we did bugboy though.

I think we should be the one to open up the dialog by essentially continuing our previous 'dream dialog' in quest #4 (>>4792243) and talking about how we ended up the betrayer, not the betrayed. Bonus points for including how us looking through our cracked helmet was more like the faceted eyes of a bug.

I'm not sure how to start it, but maybe something along the lines of "I didn't realize the void dream was telling me I would be the one to betray an ally... Should I have refused the order?"

Depending on how the dialog goes maybe we can also ask him why he didn't refuse the order to kill his 'brother'.

This is essentially the 'coming clean 100% to rebuild our trust - and asking for help on how to handle it' option. (Which we should've done from the start)

While this old smuggler’s den is hardly an advance Coryx Research Facility, even the mundane technology and power source available sends it skyrocketing into the atmosphere above what the you and the rebels could normally expect by way of medical treatment and sanitary conditions. And although the LT still managed to saddle you with some light-duties paperwork, for the most part you guys have lounged around in clean beds with full meals and chatted up some mad scud while the Petal occasionally injected you with something.

Within the week, most of you are back on your feet and off light duties. There were also some spare parts to fix Nines arm. It’s working fine now for the most part, even if the rotors don’t pair up exactly right and the bronze colour is completely at odds with the rest of his dark chassis.

“Crane…” With Nines cleared for duty, it’s finally just you and your Second healing up. This conversation has been long overdue. “We need to talk.”

“Do we?” Your Corporal is currently finishing up one some dull forms on his dataslate. With a guilty realisation, you suspect it’s likely the same dataslate the LT planted on your lap beforehand. “About what?”

“You know…” You glance around at the empty medbay, failing utterly to not look somewhat suspicious. “…about the thingy.”

“Ah.” Crane’s hand pauses on the dataslate, placing it on his bedside as he sits up and turns to face you. “That.”

His eyes are cold and bereft of emotion. Just like always.

Critfail = Honour. Loyalty. Shame. Crane is no longer COMRADE status and puts in his transfer out of 77th Platoon as soon as the Dis campaign concludes.
Double Pass = Quiet doubts. Crane’s squaddie order is not available for the rest of the Dis campaign.
0 = Fractured trust. Crane is no longer COMRADE status. Rebuilding that relationship will be a long, hard road.
1 = Forgiveness. In time. Crane retains COMRADE status, but attempts to improve this to BATTLE BROTHER will not come for some time after you purchase the prerequisite unlock in the Tradeway.
2 = Understanding. You and I have both had to make harsh decisions, gunso. Crane retains COMRADE status, progression to BATTLE BROTHER will be possible after purchasing the prerequisite unlock.
3 = Loyalty. I am with you, Natalya. Always. BATTLE BROTHER prerequisite unlock costs 50% less.
Double Pass = Dutybound. Crane’s squaddie order is considered always active for the rest of the Dis campaign.
Critpass = Honour. Loyalty. Love. Crane is now BATTLE BROTHER status (purchasing the prerequisite at a 50% discount will lock this in permanently)

We could our relationship with Crane salvage through some gambles.

We could:

Give Crane a comm connection while we talk to (if we talk to) the LT so he can hear and understand why we did what we did.

Or

We can gather the squad together and tell them what happened as a show of faith and as an apology to Crane. We could also use this as a chance to tell our squad not to get too close to the rebels because our next contract could be from the Savis asking us to wipe the rebels out.
>>
>>4926725
Please don't tell our squad that we will frag an ally if the Lt orders it. It's bad for morale.
>>
>>4926756
Yes this is not something we want to do. Crane is Yakuza so he basically understands what we did and why, but others will not.

I have a feeling that Wasp has already been compromised and regards the rebels cause as his own, and maybe will try to turn some of our squaddies. Husk and Boot are especially vulnerable here so we need to closely monitor them and be careful of what we do and say in front of them.
>>
>>4926756
"Ally" is a strong word to describe our relationship with Johnny Reb.
>>
>>4926756
No worse than fragging allies.
>>4926902
"Students" "Pupils" "Mentees" "Trainees" "Friendlies"
Pretty hard to find a word for these guys that won't look bad next to "Shot in the back." that also won't hurt the Squad's trust in us when we say it.
>>
>>4927250

>>
>>4927250
>"Students" "Pupils" "Mentees" "Trainees" "Friendlies"

Yikes bro, they are tools, a means to an end. We're not their friends, we're just here to do a job
>>
>>4926901
Now that you mention it, I could totally see Wasp fragging us if he found out.
>>
>>4927250
"Suckers in a planet wide black ops by Feds"
>>
>>4927376
>>4927616
Ou8r squad already has a different opinion, as evidenced by >>4923623
>>
>>4927691
Their opinions are irrelevant. This is the burden of command, we have to keep in mind exactly why we're here. At the end of the day we are going to be leaving these people to die by the hundreds if not thousands. This fight is ultimately futile but our job is to make it draining and difficult for the enemy. The rebels are the tools we're using to do that. If our squad makes some friends, so be it, but they're largely used to loss so whilst it'll suck when we leave these people to die, it wont be unexpected.
>>
>>4927696
Their opinions are very relevant when we're talking about their morale. Didn't you read the conversation before joining it?
>>
>>4927700
I did, although we've gotten a bit off track. We're obviously not going to be telling them that we've fragged someone we're working with but what our squad thinks of the rebels doesn't matter as I said. They can consider them friends, that's fine, but at the end of the day it's irrelevant because we're going to leave this place, and them, to die. It'd be better if they didn't consider them friends or bond with them but that's a pretty difficult thing to prevent, almost impossible I'd say in these circumstances
>>
>>4927700
I mean, we wouldn't so callously frag the dudes specifically that we just trained.

But the last op was different.
>>
>>4927703
Honestly, we should bitch to the LT. about the negative effect his orders have had on our squad and the possible future problems regarding combat effectiveness.

I mean, we gotta trust each other to watch our backs. The cost of us completing our orders may have been higher than he expected on paper, and if he did expect it then he can very politely go fuck himself.
>>
>>4927313
I fear that ship sailed the moment Anons decided to have our squad be more present in the rebels' training montage.

Since the obvious consequence of that was building up camaradie.

Anyway, people are panicking too much about Crane. Sure, not an optimal result but still manageable - just remember to buy him that goddamn bonsai next time to speed up the mending.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdFQfaf0yu8&ab_channel=BillKiley-Topic – Crane theme

You struggle to explain to Crane that this was not an act of betrayal, that you and everyone else is here for the job and not to make friends. Anything that furthers the goals of the Company mission has to be considered fair game, no matter how distasteful. Quite simply, the rebels are expendable and your men are not. You describe the rebels as tools, a means to an end, an altogether different from a battle brother of the Company. Your trusted Second fails to see the distinction.

“The Company is an organisation numbering in the tens of thousands. Do you think there are not some thousands of that number that would do as you have done to yourself, if asked? No, it is a power. A power not too different from the one I used to serve. And it will grind your honour, soul and body to dust between its cogs if you let it.” You are no stranger to Crane’s stern rebukes or long-suffering glares. Comes with being your Second, you suppose. But this is different. This is… real. “It is not the Captain breaking bed with us, sharing our dangers and torments. We have more in common with the lowliest rebel soldier who blood mixes with ours in the dirt of this world than the officers that send us to places like this to fight and perhaps die over a percentage of a credit on their returns. That day the rebel Ixx’Ixx was your battle brother, no matter what tomorrow may have brought.”

“It was a direct order, Crane.” Part of you regrets not coming clean with Crane from the start, and part of you thinks you made the right call. If this is how he felt, something could have happened. If he tried to stop you, if the LT found out… you don’t even want to think about it. “I had to do it, even if I didn’t like it. And… honestly, it made sense. But I would never have considered do something like that to you or one of the guys, you have to believe me!”

“I have followed a great many orders in my time, Natalya. For years I considered myself an instrument. That the burden of the dishonourable things I had done lay with those who wielded me. All the while blind to the blood on my hands.” Crane’s eyes never leave you, but out of the periphery of your vision you see him move his left hand ever-so slightly against the hospital bed blanket. Like the urge to wipe them clean of whatever sin first stained them is still there. “But I will never again pretend my actions are not mine and mine alone.”

[1/3]
>>
“That ain’t entirely so, Crane. In fact you know it ain’t like that.” You fume, Crane’s disappointment in you fuelling your own anger as you defend your actions. “We’re a fragging military organisation! Of course there are orders! Of course we do what we’re fragging told! Even when those orders are scud!”

“ Yes. Of course. There is such a thing as duty. There is also such a thing as honour, a warrior’s honour. But when duty and honour conflict… You are not a tool, Natalya. I have taken that path of duty at the expense of honour before, and to see you walk down the same road saddens me more than can possibly know. I have followed you all these years not because you were good at what you do, or because you were a good soldier that followed her orders to a fault. I may have admonished you many a time for your wild disregard of authority and the natural order… but I have always admired you for it. It is, after all, why I joined.” Crane sighs, leaning back in his cot. His eyes pan away from you to the white-light of the ceiling. “「なぜあなたは一つの物として現れ、別のものになりたいのですか?あなたが戦士であるならば、あなたは戦士であり、あなたが戦士でないならば、あなたは戦士ではありません。戦士の道は戦士の道です。戦士になるには、戦士のように見え、戦士のように立ちます。自分を偽ってはいけません。 」”

“You know I still don’t speak Chinese, right?” You force a sharp laugh, hoping the joke will break through whatever the frag wall just went up between you two.

“I am not in the mood for your jokes, Natalya.” Crane’s sad smile scares you more than any one of his ‘disappointed Asian dad’ expressions ever could have. “Perhaps later.”

It’s clear to you that Crane has different ideas as to what constitutes a comrade than you do. To him, the Black Company is some immaterial thing. It is only those you fight beside in the here and now that matter, regardless of whose colours they wear. But to you, the Company is your family. The lost tribe of exiles that you never had back in the Green Hell of Clayton’s Cradle. You would risk for life for any one of them, even those slimy bastards in Supply. And you’d expect the same in turn, even if you don’t always get it. But that’s on them, not you. Because the Black Company is family. All of it.

Crane is wrong. Dead wrong. …isn’t he?

I agree with Crane on one fact: that Nat has to accept what she did as her own choice and not blame orders. She had a choice even if pressured, and that's on her.

The other bullshit about honour? I'd buy it if this wasn't you know, a mercenary company meant to take on dicey and ambiguous jobs.

In all honesty, I like all three. However:
Xenophobe: a little too...cold. We definitely care about the Company, but our squad is special. Would we put our squad in danger to accomplish a goal or save several times as many members of the company? Yes, but we would do everything to keep them safe, and there is a limit.
Firebrand: I like it. If it wasn't for a last minute analysis of Daredevil, I would take it.
Daredevil: At first it seems like to sudden of an option. Our kind of honor isn't quite this. But the option says that "You’ve got a long way to go before you can comprehend Crane’s brand of honor. But you’re willing to try.". This merely helps pave the road. We can still abandon it later or refine it into different forms. Besides, we are from a Deathworld. We are well aware that despite the limiting factors of our environment, everyone makes their own choices, even if its the only choice they would ever make, and it either damns them or saves them.

I get the feeling, this vote'll be close.

Votes are:
9 Daredevil
6 Firebrand
3 Xenophobe
If it was anyone other than Crane, I would do Firebrand, but Crane has been our minder and I feel like Natalia would at least try to understand.

Reading up on Bushido and stuff might also be a good thematic entry into exile academy skill tree.
>>

>bushido
>dumb shit about chink fighting magic
>probably says you need to murder people because they didn't dip low enough in a bow

>Get asked to give it up for this Honour shit

I like the idea of Nat trying to get this shit and just not getting it due to being a Cradler

>The Black Company is your tribe. Your people. Your home. You will do what needs to be done for her. Whatever it takes for her to survive, and thrive. She is the last bastion of humanity in this scudpiece galaxy. Anything or anyone outside of it doesn’t matter. Loyalty. That right there is your idea of honour. [Xenophobe]

Forgotten has a life outside of 4chan, along with a successful career.

You're worried about him being QM cursed, but he's more likely to knock up a paralegal and not have time to do this.

Recant Daredevil

Vote Firebrand
>>
>>4930759
I know he does, I just dont want him to feel pressured into doing it if hes not able or feel bad when he chooses not to update.
>>4930602
Thats why I chose Daredevil. We TRY to figure out what Crane means. Whether or not we succeed will be decided later. Honor also means different things to different people Crane isn't asking us to take up the Honor know as fair-play, but to focus more on the honor "he who will stand with me shall be my brother", as well as to accept that we are the ones ultimately responsible for the choices we make.

Cant vote but this is the basic translation of what Crane said.
Why do you want to appear as one thing and be another? If you are a warrior, you are a warrior, if you are not a warrior, you are not a warrior. The Warrior Road is the Warrior Road. To become a warrior, look like a warrior and stand like a warrior. Don't lie yourself

Daredevil is the only correct action.

Crane has made it abundantly clear that he doesn't speak Chinese. I guess it's Hindi then.
