“The Krieger Corp is the life for me,
A gun, bed and funeral for free.
That’s my lot in the Black Company.”

It took the Earth 10 long years to die. Like every planet afflicted by the pervasive sentient plague that swept the galaxy at the turn of the 23rd century, aptly named The Rot, Earth’s demise was slow and agonising at first then violent and sudden by the end. The seas boiled and the air turned to ash in the wake of the continent-shattering orbital bombardments that cleansed her and a hundred other worlds.

20 years later, the dust of the Purification Wars has settled and the surviving xenos empires have finished carving up the remaining colonies of those less fortunate races between them, including those few left from Earth’s initial phase of expansion. Just rewards for the victorious alien’s part in saving the galaxy. The surviving human population, once many billions, now numbers in the mere millions. An entire race of refugees, vagrants and backwater outcasts begging, stealing and labouring as second-class citizens, servants or slaves under uncaring alien masters.

A lifetime of backbreaking work for stale recycled oxygen units and a handful of credits is the best fate most humans can hope for. Little wonder then that the violent but lucrative life of a mercenary holds such appeal. As the novelty of peace wears off and the rival alien nations rattle their sabres once more, human mercenaries are in high demand for their crude effectiveness and affordable prices.

And of all the human mercenary firms, there are none so infamous and so highly sought after as the services of the Black Company…

+++XENO QUOTE OF THE DAY+++
>SELECTED Asandi

“I have soared on wings of fire and hunted lesser pilot-prey when your primitive ancestors were still playing with kites. And yet with each generation of you humans there is always at least one cocksure KAAR’RIAAK-EK <untranslatable =short-life=?> that think themselves my peer, or worse, my better! This arrogance, which I once found almost endearing, is now increasingly grating on my Asandi sensibilities. Survive my flights for another decade, whelp, and I just might bother learning your name.”
-Ebony Talon, Flight Leader of the Black Company First Wingshark Squadron

Serene Asandi Clans – Federation Space – Nest of Many

“Sky-brother. It has been too long!” The white-feathered Asandi gestured for his older brother to take a seat and join him for a cup of korcha.

“Two decades.” The black-winged Asandi paused mid-shrug, these void-damn human gestures were picking up “Not so long, as the Dying Sun turns.”

“Two decades of excitement by all accounts.” Ivory Plume prodded the conversation along good-naturedly. Every decade or so he checked in with his nest sibling, always hoping he’d finally tired of this blood-spattered Path. Most of their kind walked a Path for a century or two, not five. His dedication to the Path would have been considered admirable two centuries ago… now it was concerning. “Still gallivanting about with those human mercenaries, are we?”

“I am following the Path, sky-brother. In my own way.” Ebony Talon did his level best to indulge his younger nest-sibling in this family check-in.

Already he yearned to return from leave and impose his presence on the dark skies again in the heat of battle, to swoop on the lesser pilot-prey that dared deny him as the lord of their skies. To have his enemies rage and scream their dying breaths at his magnificence as he soared on wings of fire above them. The sensation derived from these flawless victories was much akin to that of a narcotic. And Ebony Talon knew full well that he was hopelessly addicted.

[1/3]
>>
“Why don’t you come back to the fold? Return to the Serene Clans. Regardless of the… circumstances in which you left, the Autarchs would have you back in an -instant-.” Ivory Plume clacked his beak for emphasis.

“Doubtless they would.” Ebony Talon flicked a talon dismissively, not bothering to crow on at length regarding his peerless skills as an fighter pilot. One may as well describe a Nova Sun as ‘bright’. “But to do what? Waste away, my edge dulling on routine patrols and my mind drifting to madness with boredom? No.”

“You’ve been piloting fighters longer than these simians have even had aircraft to pilot, and you would trust yourself to their primitive designs?” Ivory Plume could not suppress a shudder at the thought. “Ghastly.”

“Their designs are primitive, yes. Barbaric, even. But they do have a certain…” Ebony Talon considers his choice of word carefully, testing its weight. “…’appreciation’ for the function of a predator. No vainglorious glamour or concern for aesthetics. Purely about the kill.”

The Asandi Pilot considered the F-119 ‘Wingshark’ to be one of the few notable achievements of human civilisation. Perhaps the only one, really. The humans were smelly, crude and inflated in their ideas about their own abilities. Every year Ebony Talon was putting another hotshot pilot in his place, demonstrating to these so called ‘aces’ that he was as high above them as this Asandi orbital habitat was above the gas planet below. There were always more challengers, the human species seemed geared to producing them. Such delusions were so typical of the lesser lived races. The lack of shielding on their fight craft was a testament to this, sacrificing protection for speed and power. Though admittedly the absence of this advanced tech on the Wingshark only endeared the design further to the Asandi Pilot. Having shields on your craft implied the you were admitting the possibility that you might be hit.

Ebony Talon loved the Wingshark design. It could not hold a feather to the Asandi craft, even the less optimal classes freely shared with the Federation. Sleek in form by human standards, but in terms of manoeuvrability, protection or any other number of factors the Wingshark was outclassed in everything except perhaps thrust and firepower. By comparison, it was a blunt instrument of death. A spiked club to the silver dagger of his own species’ crafts. But at least it did not pretend to be anything but.

[2/3]
>>
[3/3]

It was not the best fighter craft in the galaxy, not by most measurements. But it was nothing but a fighter craft, every plate and bolt shaved down to maximise its killing potential. It was not designed to conduct long-range patrols, or accommodate passengers, nor spare room for emergency supply runs. No allowance was made for modifications or alterations beyond that specific to the theatre of war. Even fuel was limited, short forays and pilots keeping an eye on the gauge every minute they were flying. Every aspect, every inch of the Wingshark was honed to a fine edge so that it may excel in one thing and one thing alone. War. To run down prey and pluck them from the sky like the talons of the Void mother herself.

This, at least, the human designers and engineers had understood well enough. Better even than some Asandi engineers that Ebony Talon could name. There was an admirable understanding of its nature, a savage purity in the beast that gave him a thrill every time he entered the cockpit and graced the fighter wing with his presence. He was not an ace among aces, he was a master. Not an expert, an artist. An artist in the dance of death. He was the Blade of the Dying Sun, the Black Company was merely the stone the whetted it.

“Well… so long as you are happy…” Ivory Plume muttered uneasily, sipping from his now cold korcha.

Ivory Plume feared his nest-sibling may be insane. But to voice such a concern to any other would be unspeakably rude. His sky-brother’s unhealthy obsession fixation with dealing death onto those that dare challenged his reign of the skies always had been at odds with the peaceable Asandi culture. Doubtless they would see each other again in another decade or so, just to check-in. And hope that his brother had finally tired of this Path he appeared trapped in. It did not seem likely.

“I am not happy, sky-brother. Happiness has nothing to do with it.” Ebony Talon ruffled his feathers, staring out the habitat dome into the blackness of the void. The realm where he truly belonged as an artist. An artist of death. “I am Perfection. That is all that matters.”

Nat with her firearms would obviously trump a medieval knight. Should we say that she only has a knife against Emile to make it a fair fight?

Hard to make it fair. Lets say Emile is armed and amoured walking through a forest; dense shrubbery and trees. Nat is waiting in ambush but only has a dagger. >>5008460
I think if we took away Nat's firearms and Emile's noble steed they would be on a fairly even footing. Nat has the advantage of cradler genemods but that's going up against a season knight in full-plate armour.

That said, Emile has had poor experiences with larger-than-average snakes in the past...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9l5NVIjv94&ab_channel=Majatek – Fall of the Anatolia Defence Line

Anatolia Defence Line - Istanbul, Earth - 31st August 2209 (21 years ago)

“ggghrrrkkk”

It’s not a quite roar, more like air deflating from a bag of flesh and blood. The sound makes your skin crawl, even knowing that it’s just a recording of the Rot and not the real thing.

KRAK! KA-KA-KRAK!

You can see the muzzle fire flashing in front of the camera into a mass of something and the snap-crack of heavier weaponry. As the helm focusses and the gunfire dissipates, you can make out the human bodies scattered in the street. Though the describing the a few of those bodies as anything remotely resembling ‘humans’ would be a disservice to the species, these must be the Stage I and II’s that you’re familiar enough with in the holo-vids and briefings.

“Scud… I think that’s the last of them.” The camera pans to the rest of the abandoned street, out in front of some kind of hotel lobby. “Armadillo, the package?”

“Still secure.” The camera pans to the trooper you assume is ‘Armadillo’, but they’re looking at another member of the squad. “I think Caspian is hit.”

“No! No I’m not!” The young trooper is holding a hand to their left arm, blood seeping through their fingers “I’m fine! It’s just a scratch!”

Against the Rot, just a scratch is more than enough. Hell, even the tiniest breach of an airtight suit is enough. You already know what’s going to happen before the helm-wearer even raises their weapon.

“Sorry, kid.”

The other trooper holds out a pleading hand, their panic evident even under the closed in helmet. “No, wai-!” KA-KRAK

The bullet tears through the outstreached hand and into the skull of the wounded trooper. The camera remains focused on their fallen body for a moment. After a few seconds the view pans to the other survivors of the squad, all standing there silently.

“…Let’s move.”

[2/5]
>>
There are a few larger corpses scattered out in the piles of bodies in the streets, closer to the size of a car than a human. They look like… some kind of amalgamation of bodies, the infamous Stage III. Virtually impossible to kill even with heavy explosives, even these ones in the footage aren’t quite dead but instead have the majority of their limbs blown off. Apparently, that doesn’t keep them down forever though….

“…gghghhhr…”

There is a flash of light, and the footage crinkles into indecipherable static for a few moments.

“Allah have mercy…” The voice draws the wearer’s attention skywards, the camera finally refocussing. The ancient Hague Sophia, normally dominating any view of the city, is overshadowed by the billowing mushroom cloud

“Scud. If they’re dropping nukes then the Defence Line is…”

“GGHHRRRKKK”

“Christ on a stick, where’s that coming from?”

“I got no eyes on it. Sounds like a Class IV.” Overhead, much closer than , you see something metallic and heavy crash into the hotel tower above the squad sending every running as debris plummets down onto the dusty cobblestone streets. As the dust clears you can make out the unmistakable outline of a Republic of Earth grav-tank, despite its twisted wreckage being some thirty floors up. “…maybe bigger.”

The ground is shaking and the sound that you thought might have been further nuclear detonations begins to resemble footsteps. Very large footsteps.

“GGHKKRRRRKKK” There’s a sickening pause, pregnant in the brief silence that lies heavy in the narrow streets. “GHKGHKGHK-HAARROOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM”

It is quite easily the single most unsettling sound you have ever heard in your life, and it’s safe to say you’ve heard some scud out there at night in the Green.

“Tuckshop, you know these streets?”

“I… uh, yeah I used to work just around the corner-“

“Get us an out! Now!”

There are a few minutes of confused scrambling on the camera as the survivors of the squad beat feet, ducking into side alleys of the stone streets of Istanbul and hairy encounters with stray infected. The wearer looks back at one of their rearguard number firing wildly into a mass of infected following them. The camera pans to the front again, heavy breathing audible through the recording with each pounding footstep as they turn a corner. When the wearer looks back, there’s no sign of the infected. Or the rearguard. Finally, after a few more minutes of panicked retreated in the abandoned streets of Earth, the survivors reach something approaching an exit. You can make out what looks like a parking lot where a Republic of Earth gunship has touched down outside of a large sports stadium.

[3/5]
>>
“Start her up!” The wearer yells at the crewmen as they come up on the gunship. “We got infected right on our asses!”

“No way!” The lead pilot shakes his head, waving the newcomers to one side and pointing at the stadium. “We’ve got thousands of civilians still trapped in there, they need every ship here to get ‘em out!”

The camera looks around, at the four surviving Company squaddies and the Republic of Earth guys parked on their ride out of here. It’s just these two pilots and a lone young-looking RoE soldier. Probably lost, no one is where they’re supposed to be in this chaos. Even as the helm-wearer weighs their options you can hear, just on the periphery, the haunting groans of approaching infected.

“We need to leave. Right now.” The warning tone in the sentence from the helm-wearer seems obvious to you, but it’s clearly missed on the gunship crew as the pilot steps in his way.

“Hey! You mercs are being paid to escort this evac effort, it’s not a free fragging ride!” The helm wearer doesn’t answer, not even shifting slightly as another trooper edges in closer to the co-pilot. The expression of the pilot changes from to angry. “Listen here, gun-for-hire, you can sit your ass down and hold the fragging line! That’s what you’re being paid for, isn’t it?”

The view shifts down to the heavy case in the hands of the Company trooper next to them, ‘Armadillo’ if you recall correctly. The camera pans up to their face. A moment’s pause, and then the trooper nods.

Without a word CPL Sabatino brings up his rifle and fires a three-round burst directly into the pilot’s centre-mass. The co-pilot is already dead, courtesy of a bullet to the back of the head from one of the other Company survivors.

“What about this one?” The final trooper asks, you think they were called ‘Tuckshop’, gun drawn on the bewildered Republic of Earth trooper. Behind him Armadillo is already strapping himself into the cockpit. You assume that means he knows how to fly it.

“We’re taking this bird.” The helm-wearer leans in close to the young soldier with their hands up. “You got a problem with that?”

The RoE private shakes their head. “U-uh, no! No, sir!“

“Don’t call me ‘sir’, I work for a living.” The helm-wearer nods at the other Company soldiers and they embark as the gunship engines power up. The camera turns back to the young soldier still standing on the concrete of the Istanbul car park. “Hop in, or don’t.”

[4/5]
>>
[5/5]

To his credit, the soldier does hesitate and look back at the stadium looming behind him. But as the first Rot infected lopes into view, that hesitation quickly collapses.

“Good choice, kid.” The wearer offers a hand up as the latest addition to the squad hops on board.

The helm-cam pans down as the gunship takes off, the smoke of the city overshadowed further mushroom clouds in the distance. The streets are writhing with infected, with sporadic pockets of gunfire indicating holdouts of Republic of Earth or Company forces against the endless wave of Rot. Larger ordnance spurts fire at the towering advanced late stage specimens of the Rot, to little visible effect. Buildings collapse as the Class III’s and IV’s howl and groan, sweeping aside tanks and fortifications like toys. Soon enough they’ll be launching a nuke right here too, civvies or no. Istanbul is lost, and with it any hope of keeping the worst of the Rot contained.

“Only choice you had, really…”

+++RECORDING ENDS+++

Crane, Night Night and yourself are silent for a few moments. Eventually, your SIG whistles. “Zut alors… that did not look like a fun time.”

“No… I imagine the fall of Earth was no one’s idea of ‘fun’.” Crane says thoughtfully, unaware of the irony of the statement coming from the squad’s resident buzzkill. “But why was it on an unlinked file on this corporal’s helmet? Why the interest in Sabatino?”

You scratch your dirty tussled hair. “Sabatino… Sabatino, why does that name ring a bell?”

Both Crane and Night Night look at you like you’ve grown an extra head.

“Ahem.” Your SIG coughs politely. “Perhaps that is because ‘Capstone’ Sabatino is now Colour Sergeant ‘Capstone’ of the Black Company, oui?”

“Oh.” The highest ranked NCO, the Captain’s personal man. “That would be it. ‘Oui’.”

Your Second shakes his head in disappointment, which is kinda unfair. Hardly your business to know who’s sitting around the big boy’s table, you’re just a damn footslogger.

I'm actually not sure where Blue stands. His cold no-nonsense attitude and ordering us to ghost that one bug rebel make me think he is a standard "anything for the company" man, but this quote...

>“Far from it. But suffice to say there’s movement in the Company, and having a lowly Krieger Lieutenant having friends on the outside with some agency isn’t seeming like such a bad idea.” You don’t know what the LT is on about, but the words ‘movement’ seemed to carry with them an unusually ominous tone.

...Makes me wonder if he is more self serving or if their is some internal politicking going on in the company or some sort of strife. Maybe something to do with whether to open the company up to more xenos or maybe some conflict with The Captain over whether we ought to put Humanity's interests or The Black Company's interests first, I dunno.

Either way I don't think we should share this with Blue until we know him better. He may be interested and try and push us to investigate more if he is self-interested or part of some internal clique within the company, or he may just do the standard "it's above your paygrade and on an need to know basis, so zip it".
>>

I'm just worried that handing over the drive to the LT will mean we can't reveal it to anyone we want to show it to personally, and we will lose possession of it which may be important if the sum of all these things is greater than the individual parts or if holding this evidence will let us make some sort of political power play later on, and finally I'm worried about this painting a target on our backs and making it harder for us to investigate this further.

We might get sucked into whatever backroom power struggle the LT hinted at or just get the Clinton special, double tap to the back of the head suicide. But the risk of asking around about this stuff with no understanding of it is more likely to get us into an unfortunate workplace accident, if somebody (the LT) catches on to us. And we did vote for being ambitious so gaining the favor of Boy Blue and showing him we can be depended on seems smarter. I think Nat knows that she is not a political enough animal to use the recording better than the LT could or try to outplay him. it shows a willingness to try to play Blue or work against him if Nat thinks there is even a chance it might server her own goals better. Which I think is a bold strategy to follow on something she doesn't know the value of in a political game she knows nothing about, played by people she don't even know, for reasons she can't even take a guess at. Once we have more pieces of the puzzle, then we should be more discrete. Someone asking about the famous battle should be able to shake loose a few more clues, but we started to ask more specific questions, some people might guess what we are up to. As for Boy, while it might garner a bit of trust from him, there are two downsides. One, he know knows we have a bit of information on whatever the mission was and will keep an eye out when we go snooping. The second one is that he may want us involved in internal politics that we don't know enough about yet to make informed choices. One we know more about the higher going-ons of the Company and have already garnered more trust with Boy, we can start asking him some questions.
Two important things I wish to mention. One ling of inquiry we should follow is when Capstone became the Company's second in command, or if he was promoted during or after the mission in question. The second line of inquiry is who the other 4 living squad members were(we have name Armadillo and Tuckshop) and who the RoE private was. So we have three leads and could either use them to find the other three or maybe look again at the recording to see if the other three had any identifying characteristics.

Okay guys, here's my take on this.

This is personally dangerous to Color Sergeant Capstone, for reasons of internal discipline. A mercenary company of this sort is really only loyal to itself (rather than fighting for reasons of patriotism), thus, punishments are likely to be somewhat harsher to scare the rank and file into line. They are allowed to get away with more (looting, harsh treatment of civvies), but when it comes to orders, they better fucking obey - or else!

Which means that now you have the senior enlisted man of the unit having a history of betraying an employer. What Brother will EVER say anything other than "Bitch, you did it too, or worse!" to the Sergeant, no matter what the charge is? How can the Sergeant ever discipline a Brother again?

Which means that if this gets out, he's useless in his current role, even if Company leadership decided to ignore the breach of contract....

Which means that his personal position, rank, and livelihood are in danger....

Which means that if he thinks you had solid proof of the betrayal.... He now has a very good reason to want you dead. Even if he wasn't punished by Company leadership, do you think he really wants to go back to field operations, especially with that stain hanging over his head?

Which means that you might be taking point on every suicide op he can possibly scrape up... If you don't wind up with a bullet in the back after you leave the enlisted man's club.

Just a thought. Keep this shit quiet. And make sure you keep a copy where someone loyal to you can get to it. I don't think Sgt. Capstone is a very nice man at all.

There are some things you can either know nothing about, or you need to know everything in order to be immune to. We need to know more, we just need not to get shot in the process.
>>
>>5010749
I dunno, that's for us to decide. But before the whole 'shoot our ally' thing I'd say she was a 'me and the people I know' kinda gal, and up until we decided to show interest in being fine with continuing doing dirty deeds to further our own interests I'd have said she was still that kinda person, now I'd say I see Nat as more self-serving or more of a company-woman, albeit a hesitant one. If Nat showed more curiosity or interest in old Earth or RoE stuff or leaned more heavily into her xenophobia I could see her being interested in the preservation and thriving of humanity, but as it stands I see her more as disliking or being mistrustful of aliens rather than thinking well of humans.

Didn't quite express that last part clearly or how I wanted, but I don't really have time to edit to my satisfaction to express how I think Nat thinks.

The real "product" the Black Company sells is politically reliable military forces - meaning obedient and effective troops. A merc unit who can't fight or won't obey orders is quickly unemployed, bankrupt, and disbanded or dead.

On a personal level you can't necessarily fault him for wanting to stay alive, but think about this... You go, you fight, you survive. Then you find out that some shit of a corporal popped two pilots and bugged out of a contract because he lost his nerve. You guys don't get paid (depending on the contract there may be penalties also) and all of your comrades who died now died for nothing.

Yeah, I CAN say he's a piece of shit. That lack of loyalty to the higher unit is what makes this betrayal so scummy.

Whether or not he thinks the fight can be won isn't his call to make - That's for the officers, who often have a better idea of the whole picture than they do. That's the hard part about being a soldier... Your life depends on someone making the call without your knowledge, and you go on faith. Sometimes, they put you in a situation where they know you will die because it's the best option they have for the unit as a whole.

The only way this decision is really defensible is if the rest of the unit doesn't matter at all, or if the unit is so crushed that you wouldn't get useful orders anyway.

Good call on the case thing, though. It's quite possible we did have higher orders... And that makes me wonder if that thing might contain activation codes for the battleship. Weren't we unsure about how we got that thing anyway?

Perhaps the price for us bugging out was that we get to take a fun piece of hardware with us... Or perhaps Company leadership just saw an opportunity.
>>
>>5010953
>You go, you fight, you survive.

Lol. See, that didn't happen to most of the National (?) forces. Look around, Krigger, I don't see any other human fleets in good standing with the galactic community.
>>
>>5010953
Oh wait, I read the wrong "You". Anyways, case in point, the Corporal made an accurate assessment in that shit was fragged seven ways from Sunday, all of 'em leading to an apocalypse and our employer wasn't gonna be able to re-employ us anyways.

Life is full of hard choices like this, in this case he gambled correctly.
>>
>>5010953
My man if you expect mercs to sit down, shut up, and die like good little soldiers for you then you would never find mercs willing to work for you. A mercenary's mindset isn't "Oh man I better not leave my post, we won't get paid if I leave." it's "If I stay here I'm fucking dead, and I can never get paid again.". Mercs look out for mercs because whoever they are working for isn't looking out for them. There is a tacit understanding of this everywhere. You can hire mercs to do just about any gnarly shit you need them to do but if you're putting their lives at a greater risk than they find worth it, they're gone.

You don't hire mercenaries to just be regular footsoldiers unless you are really fucking desperate. You instead hire them to use them as irregulars or specialists. Or just black ops shit.

The Black Company while being markedly well disciplined and structured is still a mercenary company. And shouldn't be trusted to be anything more. The reason why the BC does so well is because they are damn good at what they do. At the end of the day a "reliable" deniable asset is useless if it can't get the job done in the first place.

The Company is the only one looking out for the Company. Survival first.
>>
>>5010976

Mercs expect to FIGHT for you. Dying is just an occupational hazard, and accepted by any soldier/former soldier with a realistic take on the profession. Contracts are picked on a risk/benefit basis. "If I die, I can never get paid again" isn't just a mercenary attitude, it's a SOLDIER'S attitude. It's the attitude of everyone who dons a uniform and fights. That's why troops (mercs included) are disciplined - to keep them fighting, and it still wasn't the Corporal's call to make. I think you're mistaking a thug for a merc. Granted, traditionally, that's been a fine line in the Black Company.

>You don't hire mercenaries to just be regular footsoldiers

Why not? If anything, that's likely to be the single most beneficial use of them. You can use them for security troops, rear echelon guards, convoy escorts, anywhere where they are likely to do the job because they don't see a ton of risk, and they can free up a man. When you employ them in pitched battles, you pay them a lot more. Shit, the Company itself was hired to escort the evac effort, not sweep-and-clear against the Rot.
>>
>>5011038

(Con't)

I have no idea where this thought that "merc = specialist/irregulars/black-ops shit" came from, but it's been trotted out in these threads before. That's the crap from video games and bad movies. Real mercs do security duty and beat-the-peasant work where you're going up against rioters and militias, where some reasonably skilled and even vaguely disciplined men can make a difference. Guerrilla warfare is risky and TOUGH, physically and emotionally. Your own arguments on mercs not being willing to die for a cause undercut this idea of mercs being special. Would you rather spend your time slogging 15 miles for a raid on a camp, and then dodge pursuers on the way back, or would you rather stand guard or ride in a Humvee next to trucks, where you can stay in out of the rain and take smoke breaks? The latter pays less, but is far more survivable. There's only been one time I know of when mercenaries were used on special operations, and that was blackwater's brief peonage for the CIA. That only worked because the mercs were given an extraordinary amount of support, which the CIA was willing to do because the CIA didn't have to fight the DOD for control of the operation. That was bureaucratic politics, not the inherent suitability of mercenaries for the task. Hire mercs as deniable assets and expect to fail, because most deniable jobs are high risk and no support. Where was OUR air support?

The Black Company is INfamous for its ne'er-do-well troops, amd reasonably tough and lucky, but not better than more "traditional" armies.

Honestly just memeing and shitposting, I didn't even read the whole thing
>>
>>5011056

What makes both the original books, and this quest, is that the Black Company is portrayed with enough realism to enable the willing suspension of disbelief - its not just fiction, it's GOOD fiction, real enough to be believable.

The Black Company survives because of its unity and discipline. The only way out is feet first. First this was because of the Company's religious roots - killing a million people was a holy duty, and orders were in the service of their god. Later, it became because they would take anyone tough enough to survive, and these were people running from something, or desperate enough to join. When the world is against you, you stay with the Company. The company against the world

The difference between thugs and mercenaries is that the mercenaries fight for a larger unit, and have a duty to that unit. Thugs have loyalty to no one. The unit MUST have discipline in order to fulfill its task, and in doing so survive. Read the first section of the original Black Company book, and you'll find the section where the command staff was searching for an acceptable reason to walk on a riot/guard contract with the Syndic of Beryl (they only got out because the Syndic was assassinated). They didn't walk because of the honor of the Company - this wasn't just an abstract (although the Annalist did their best to MAKE the Company mean something), it was the guarantor of continued employment, thus, survival of the Company as a unit. Survival as individuals was secondary.
>>
>>5011070

(Con't)

And THAT is why Cpl Capstone was shit for walking like he did, assuming there weren't higher orders (obviously, we just see a fraction of this so far, so I've been talking about what we know so far). He endangered the entire unit (which he, and other Brothers depend on to survive) by bringing disrepute to it through his actions.
>>
>>5011065

The first contract was a straightforward assault. This one was a guerilla contract we picked. The previous Black Company threads involved pitched battles.

Spec ops is the exception, not the rule.
>>

>“The LT will want to see this. Whatever it is.” Whatever is going on, it’s sounding like it’s above your paygrade. Handing the drive over the LT is what an NCO is supposed to do in this situation. At least the LT knows they can trust you with this kind of backroom stuff. [Firebrand]
>>5008350
>>
>>5011075
>The first contract was a straightforward assault.
The first contract was a raid. Get in, secure the data, and that's that. That isn't an assault. And if you're talking about the original BC quest, not everyone here will have read those threads. So let's not assume either way.

In the vacuum that is this quest, so far we have done primarily irregular work.

But it doesn't matter because Capstone's action are so massively insignificant in the grand scheme of things with that one recording as to be effectively irrelevant. I'm sure eventually all the shit would come together to be meaningful but based on one singular instance it isn't enough. Nor is it of great enough severity based on the circumstances.

You have chosen a very strange hill to die on. Now when we come across some files which indict a higher up with some truly heinous shit THEN you'll be right. But not for this.
>>
>>5011084

1) An assault is any attack against a fortified position.

2) I don't buy that this quest is a vacuum, and you have little justification to make that statement. There are numerous comments about people reading previous threads in the original BC Quest.

3) I picked this hill because there's a number of posters that don't really seem to get what the Black Company was about. The feel of it DOES matter... Otherwise its not Black Company. Thank God that Forgotten has a good read on it. Yeah, I AM right to challenge them now. If not now, when?
>>

>>
>>5011087
>1) An assault is any attack against a fortified position.
The station was not a fortified position. Defensive guns meant for blasting space debris do not an emplacement make. That's like saying my house is a fortified position the same as a honest bunker is.

>There are numerous comments about people reading previous threads in the original BC Quest.
And there are also comments stating they would go and read it once they heard of it. This is why we shouldn't assume either way. Safe assumption or no.

>If not now, when?
Literally any time there is more substance to be judged on. I just said that. If Forgotten has such a good read on it then it doesn't matter what the posters think about it. It may even help the story narratively to have Nat who has her own opinions on it instead of a preconceived understanding of the themes presented prior to grow into those themes instead of just being a meat-dummy driven by them.

I'm not gonna sit here and act like you're being unreasonable but I do think you're getting a little heated.
>>
>>5011084
We were the shock troopers in BC, but here we're more Rangers or First Recon already with the ghosty helms and such.

So we'll probably see a lot more special ops type missions than OBC.

Also Forgotten has remembered to keep important Quest Givers away from a bad dice roll of death.
>>

>Also Forgotten has remembered to keep important Quest Givers away from a bad dice roll of death.
Where's the fun in that? Don't you like losing entire plots and getting huge setbacks because of fucky wucky timey wimey dice systems?

Twenty bucks says the next contract is just a plain big slugfest. That inevitably goes tits up over a secondary objective

The ghosthelms really are nifty though.
>>
>>5011092

What constitutes a fortified position? Provide me with a technical definition. Looked at another way, an assault is an attack on a stationary position, as opposed to a meeting engagement, where both sides wander imto each other during a patrol.

You're also reading things that aren't there. "Heated" would look something like "spare me your faggy blather, you autistic fuck."

So, we're here for a reason, right? It's to have fun in a fictional universe where said fiction is the product of our awesome king and ruler, Forgotten QM. He has a good take on the world he wants to play in (seems like he's read the books), and what distinguished those books, in part, was the verisimilitude. When you have posters throwing out shit ideas of what the people in the world would act like, that's not playing the game and finding out, that's just acting dumb. We are human now, the characters in the game are human. It's not like they're suddenly going to start acting not human, just because it's sci-fi, so there's no excuse for dumb takes. Rather, that unrealism shits up good fiction. You're saying that it's preferable to have crap?

Spare me.
>>
>>5011104
>What constitutes a fortified position?
A structure purpose built to impede incoming fire. It's not that complicated. A house isn't made to be shot at. A sandbag wall is. That station wasn't designed or built with combat in mind. Therefore it's not a fortified position. Nor was is a structure that was shanghai'd into such a role.

You're heated because you're going at it with fervor. Words don't dictate an attitude.

Technically speaking we're playing a transhuman but hey. The problem is you're saying "This is how it MUST be" and that is dumb. Also wrong. Especially considering you are supposing for an entire galaxy of people how they should behave.
>>
>>5011119
>Technically speaking we're playing a transhuman but hey. The problem is you're saying "This is how it MUST be" and that is dumb. Also wrong.

Are you saying that we have any reason to think that human nature in this world is different than human nature as we know it? And, if so, how do we relate to it? (Also, but not relevant, are you seriously arguing transhumanism isn't a subset of sci-fi?) It's idiotic to think that we can't look at these characters and say "This is stupid. They wouldn't act like that." Which is what I was doing. Yeah, we CAN say "This is how it must be, because the alternative is retarded."

>“Alright. This stays with me. You two, not a word. Comprende?” You keep this hush-hush, storing the footage on a secure drive. You plan to ask around with some of your less scrupulous Company contacts, see if there are more pieces to add to the puzzle [Daredevil]

“Alright. This stays with me. You two, not a word. Comprende?” It’s not that you don’t trust the LT, although you know for a fact there’s a dangerous cold steel underneath that young face of his. It’s more that you don’t know what you’d be trusting him with. That’s how you justify to yourself for now anyway. “пoнимaть? How do you say ‘comprende?’ in French?”

Night Night sighs, which isn'y exactly the “absolutely ma’am” attitude you were hoping for. “…comprendre.”

“Well that’s handy. And you as well…” Ignoring the Frenchie’s laissez faire attitude, you point at your Second. “I’ll follow this up, quiet-like, but in the meantime we don’t say nothing. 理解?”

Night Night looks at you. Then at a Crane. Then back to you. “Ma soeur, the Corporal is not-“

“She knows.” It’s not a growl, Crane doesn’t typically growl. It’s more like a resigned exhalation of breath. “少なくとも私は彼女が知っていることを願っています...”

“Aight, time for you to bounce Double N.” You watch the sultry French signaller wander off before turning to your trusted Corporal. “She’s a smart girl, mouthy but I reckon she can keep a lid on real stuff like this. You and me? We should have a proper talk about just what the frag is going on in this little file here. Not to mention how we play this.”

“Agreed, but perhaps later. In the meantime, I have a less pressing question.” Crane frowns at you, and it’s one of those frowns of his that you always have trouble telling if it’s the real thing or not. “Did you learn some Chinese just to irritate me?”

You blow Crane a kiss just as the first roar of the Talon gunship reaches your ears. The dust storm has barely reached this region, the engines of the gunship are still distinctly audible from the drone of the Savis Thunderbolts. Still, and you wouldn’t admit this to any voiddamn soul, the sound made you jump at bit. Not flinch, mind you. Just jump.

“Looks like our ride is here!” You grin as you whistle for your SIG to return, eager to both get away from prowling Cradler Auxilliaries and get closer to some sweet, sweet pain meds. “Night Night! Pop smoke!”

“Magpie, Crow.” You wave at the two Troopers that hop off the first gunship to lands, must mean that SGT Casket is in one of the other birds setting down. “Glad you two could take some time out of your busy shoplifting schedule to give some fellow Kriggas a ride.”

“ Schwester.” Trooper Crow grunts, lowering his rife as you step into view. “Glaubst du, es ist zu spät für uns, sie einfach hier zu lassen?”

“Äh, wahrscheinlich bruder.” The two members of Banshee squad continue conversing in their native tongue right in front of you, like you’re not even there. “Anscheinend haben ein paar Wochen im Dschungel ihren Humor nicht verbessert.”

“What is with all these fragging diverse languages?” You ask yourself through gritted teeth, fiddling with your translator. “And why in the void do our auto-translators not bother interpreting them half the time? Too busy transcribing xenos bullscud?!”

“Void Mother’s tender tits…” You look over your shoulder to see SGT ‘Casket’ Irons with more members of Banshee squad disembarking. “You Vinehounds look rough enough… but what the scud happened to the 42nd?”

“Nothing good.” You grunt, signalling for your people to get moving. “I'll tell you all about it on the way back.”

Ideally, the bodies of the fallen are recovered where possible. But Black Company operational procedures allow some leeway prioritising exactly what should be recovered according to the mission parameter. The most import item of recovery being their identification ‘dog tags’ and the second most important items being any helmcam recordings for the Company virtual annals. Enough gunships were sent for both you and the 42nd to evac, so there is space to airlift the bodies if you decide to do so. Although moving some 40 odd corpses onto gunships will take a bit more time than just bugging out of here right now, which is your natural inclination given what turned these walking hard-hitting mercs into limp mounds of flesh and meat.

I wont be bothered or surprised if we vote to grab all the bodies but I think this is the best option. Hanging around puts all of us, and the Talon ships at risk which is a little too much I think. With this many Kriegers we'll probably be fine, even if there are a few casualties, but it only takes 1 rocket to take the Talon gunships out of play and then we're all well and truly fucked.

Their bodies will remain but their tags and story will continue on, safely back to the Black Company fleet as it should be.

If we absolutely must collect bodies, I'd go so far as to suggest we only grab Black Company men and women and leave the bodies of the rebels here (although that might leave a bad taste in some peoples mouths)

I don't see how? I'm suggesting that we quickly throw down some fuel in the general area and any other accelerants we have sitting around whilst everyone is loading up on the ships. Once we're done we start boarding and either yeet an HE grenade down there or have the ship fire off a missile once we're on the way. Worst case scenario we literally light it with a lighter.

You feel the urge to keep the knowledge of the helmcam to yourself, wary of the archivists noticing anything astray when the footage is uploaded. But you decide against it, all they’ll be able to see is that there -was- a file there that isn’t reflected in the footage. That very slight clue to something being amiss doesn’t outweigh the traditions of the Black Company.

The story of the 42nd Krieger Platoon deserves to join the Annals in full, even it’s grisly end. The life of a mercenary is typically short and violent, with few aside from their closest comrades shedding any tears over their passing. For most in the Company a place in the Annals is the only thing that will be left of them when they die, a kind of immortality. You’ll not rob the 42nd of that, even just a portion of it.

“Got the tags, but only one helmcam left for the Annals.” You hold up the chip containing CPL ‘Debris’ du Preez’s footage, the unlinked file having being carefully transferred to another storage device resting comfortably in your back pocket.

“Damn shame, but that’s the nature of the beast.” You’re getting good at interpreting Crane’s indifferent tones, but you’re still in the dark when it comes to the gloomy Banshee Squad SGT. To be perfectly honest, you have no idea what that voidborn witch is ever thinking. “Hop on board, Snake Eyes.”

By the time everyone is embarked the camp has been entirely cleared of anything useful left behind by the Auxilliaries. The sole survivor TPR ‘Cutter’ is under the careful watch of the Banshee Medic ‘Sticks’ Nahele, a Three Pines native like Petal. He’s going to make it, apparently. But you doubt he’ll ever leave the experience of what happened here behind him.

SGT ‘Casket’ Irons looks to you for confirmation during take off, chiming into the comms when you give the nod.

“Bluebird One, this is Banshee actual. Fire away.”

++“Copy Banshee actual, this is Bluebird One.”++ The lead gunship pilot’s voice chimes in over the comms. ++“Firing incendiaries now.”++

The jungle surrounding Checkpoint Charlie explodes into an inferno not too dissimilar to the payloads left in the wake of the Savis Thunderbolts. Everything in the immediate area is incinerated, harmless vegetation and dangling corpses all the same, with a growing fire spreading out to consume whatever’s left in the widening firezone. It’s far from a decent funeral service, but still better in your opinion than leaving the bodies of the 42nd here to rot and eventually be swallowed by the jungles of Dis. Or further desecrated by some particularly barbaric Cradlers should they decide to return.

“Alright, take us away Bluebird.” SGT Casket takes a seat next to you in the gunship hold as the evac force veers off on a southern course under the cover of the growing dust storm. Probably not best practice for the two NCOs to be on the same gunship during the evac, but Casket wanted you riding with her. You don’t miss the convenience of the fact that none of Hail’s rebels found their way to a seat in here. “Gotta say, your pictures of the Sav base caused quite a stir. Not to mention the call to switch to shortwave, you’ve sure been busy out here.”

This is the first time you’ve really had any one-to-one time with the senior NCO of Banshee Squad. You know that she’s been investigated by the CDC (‘Company Disciplinary Committee’) more than once, the latest one apparently involving the death of a superior. She was cleared of the charges, ‘no evidence of wrongdoing’ the CDC findings said. But that’s more a lack of evident guilt being found rather than her being proved innocent, the shadow of rumour has hung over her ever since. Not that the voidborn witch seems to mind it, if anything you’d think she revels in her dark reputation as someone you definitely don’t want to cross.

“Yeah? Well, I’m- ow! Frag…” You wince, hand reaching subconsciously to your back as the fierce burning sensation returns in full. Safe to say Petal’s stash has well and truly worn off.

>CRITICAL Third Degree Burns (untreated) -15DC, +1 Adverse Re-Roll

“That looks like it smarts like a slap from the Void mother…” Casket murmurs, looking over . You haven’t actually been able to get look at it yourself, but you know it smarts. “Sticks here has some of the good scud still leftover. Want him to give you a hit?”

> “I’m good, I’ll get Petal to take a proper look at it when we get back to camp.” In addition to getting a quick rundown on what’s going on, you spend some time chatting with Casket while she’s in a talkative mood. You aren’t best buds, but they might be a little less of an enigma now. [Daredevil]

> “Not just yet. What’s the situation back at the base camp?” Although you’ll need to debrief in full with the LT at some point, Casket gives you the skinny on what’s been going on since you’ve been out of contact. And then she get’s her medic to take a look at you. [Firebrand]

What use is the update right now. When we get the info passed to us, we'll deal with it. Right now we need to rest and recover as much as possible otherwise we are going into the fight near or at critical again.

New StV anon here

I finally caught up with where we last left our Valorous Knigga and by the Almighty >>5009622

Forgotten, thank you so much for not just turning your back on that whole dumpster fire. Jesus Christ man I wouldn't have blamed you.
Emile's growth from home-grown humble ish knigga to baller shield-chad uncovering ancient conspiracies, solving a habit-murder case, and BOLDLY sleeping with the enemy (and best waifu imho) has been quite the wild ride and a total delight to me. I'm beyond stoked to see what awaits Sir Emile in the journey ahead.
That being said, will we be picking up StV after we're finished with the current BCQ 2230 campaign?

>>
>>5013414
I always appreciated Vancwell for the shenanigans she would be involved in,but I could never see us together because she is an immoral snake and we are a noble knight. Unless she became a good person, the longer we pursue her, the more likely blood will be spilt. I just don't want her poisoning one of our sisters in a fit of pique because we won't kill some law man causing her trouble. Regardless, that crit was still spectacular.
>>
>>5013683
and this is why I am mad about the shitpost, every opinon we have heard and instance we have had with her has been burdened by our history with House Vancewell or others opinions of her.

we've been robbed of intimate moment where we could have seen another facet of her character outside of the viper we are admittedly attracted too and that preconception that others have of her.

>I just don't want her poisoning one of our sisters in a fit of pique because we won't kill some law man causing her trouble.

Double Fail = Tight-lipped. Casket withholds some important information about the situation at the rebel base. And it doesn’t come up in your debriefing either.
0 = Watch your back. Casket has little time for you, uninterested in you as a person and unimpressed with you as a SGT. You can’t expect much support from her in the future briefings with the LT. Hopefully that’s the least of your worries.
1 = No time for the new kid. Casket still thinks you’re as green as it gets when it comes to NCO business, but you’re still new and you don’t aggravate her more than the average person. At least she hasn’t written you off.
2 = Professional respect. Casket’s stern sullenness reminds you of Crane. Her silence is more gloomy and less taciturn than your Corporal’s brand, but you’ve gotten good at reading your Second and that pays dividends here.
3 = Gallow’s Humour. While on the surface Casket appears to be an edgy, morbid and melancholic ice queen, she’s actually fragging hilarious. You have to be the right kind of twisted to get her sick sense of humour, luckily you are.
Double Pass = Helpful highlights. Casket provides some additional information about the situation at the rebel base. Something that wouldn’t have made the debriefing.

>88 Double Fail: Tight-lipped. Casket withholds some important information about the situation at the rebel base. And it doesn’t come up in your debriefing either.

Dis Planetside (Savis Empire) – Equatorial Jungles: Border of Delta Sector – 6th Cycle September 2230AD

Some may think of you as a big, boisterous lughead but you haven’t spent years with Crane at your back without learning how to read the man’s moods and meanings. Casket presents a similar challenge, with your initial conversation stifling on the subject of what’s been going on since you and your crew stepped off a couple of weeks ago to hunt Sav patrols in Delta Sector.

Sounds like Delta Sector isn’t the only place where the Savis have been pushing hard. Ever major mine site and urban zone has been the site of major Savis deployments, with increasing activity in the arid hills and equatorial sectors. All across the board the rebels are being pushed back, though apparently your identification of the datacept towers has spared the rebels any major disaster.

“Don’t know why you’re asking me all this.” Casket frowns, one eye locking on you from under her fringe. “This is all going to be covered in your briefing now. LT’s beamed your recon snaps up the chain of command. I expect we’ll be dusting off and out of here ‘fore too long.”

It seems Casket is tired of letting you nibble at the grapevine, though whether that’s because she’s bored of the conversation or just naturally taciturn is anyone’s guess. A few minutes pass without any further words, but that doesn’t bother you. The trick is to not push the conversation. So, for the most part you spend the trip is silence, it is at least not an uncomfortable silence. If Casket wants to talk, she’ll talk.

“So, you infiltrated the Legion base all by yourself?” Casket finally deigns to speak. “Those recon pictures were top-tier.”

“Not the base itself.” You shrug, ignoring the pain that immediately causes. Don’t want to appear too eager for further conversation. “Got myself set up on a nice hill overlooking pretty much the whole base. I had that Zaan tracker with me, but we still had to tiptoe around some thirty-odd Savs.”

“Impressive. Very nice.” Casket nods approvingly, and you let the silence sink back in before she speaks again. “So these Auxiliaries that did for the 42nd, are they all human?”

“Mhmm. Every damn one of them.” It’s then that you wonder if you’d have any issue killing one of your fellow human homeworlders. It wouldn’t be the first time, but that was out in the Green. Maybe the rules are different here. “Born and raised on Clayton’s Cradle, their mama’s tit in one hand and a genemod vial in the other.

“Sound like some tough sons-of-bitches.” It’s not like conversation from Casket is flowing freely, but the sullen silences are less and less frequent. “You’re from Clayton’s Cradle too, right? The more I know about who I’m killing, the better.”

“Mafia is one of your Banshee’s, isn’t she? Probably knows much the same as me.” You look up at the gunship hold ceiling thoughtfully, figuring on who’d know the most about this new and dangerous opponent. “Sharky from Prophet Squad is ex-Auxiliary, we’ll need to pick his brain when we get back to base camp. If anyone can give us the rundown on how these guys operate, it’s him.”

"Maybe. But I bet you wouldn't have gone done as easy as the 42nd even without Sharky's advice."

You snort, showing off the gruesome burns on your back and shoulders. “Do I look like I was in any kind of shape to take on a pack of Cradler Auxiliaries?”

“Hmm.” The voidborn witch puts a thoughtful finger to her lips, her purple eye glinting in the light of the gunship hold. “I’d have still placed good creds on you making it out.”

“Yeah?” You didn’t take Casket for a gambler. And now you’re already thinking of inviting her to poker night. “Not that I mind folk betting in my favour, but why’d you figure on that?”

“Hunting Sav patrols for weeks, without support or backup, blow the lid on the location of the closest major Savis base, survive a fragging airstrike and then somehow crawl through being hunted by jungle elites without losing a single guy?” Casket shakes her head. “Safe bet in my books.”

“Lost two.” The Asandi Indigo Eyes and the human Simonsen, both killed in the Savis airstrike.

“Rebels. Chaff.” Casket shrugs.“Wouldn’t count them. Your people made it out in one piece, right?”

“Right.”

[2/3]
>>
[3/3]

“There you go. And don’t mistake this for flattery or some bullscud.” Casket warns, and the glint in her violet eyes seems to take on an ominous glow. Probably a trick of the light. “You best believe that if these Auxilliaries come calling, I’m just singling you out as the girl I chuck in their way while I make a run for the nearest gunship.”

That earns a roll of the eyes from you. “I’m really feeling the love here, Casket. Thank you, I’m honoured.”

“Anytime Snake Eyes.” Casket leans back in the hold with her eyes closes, conversation over. “Anytime…”

You’re confident that you’ve raised yourself in the estimation of Banshee Squad’s leader. In the future you can expect her support in mission briefings, at least in situations where she might otherwise have remained neutral.

==========================

Thankfully it appears that upon your return to base you won’t be immediately expected to get back into combat. That’s just as well, because you don’t think you’re in any shape for it. For the next week after your return…

>Non-combat duties at the main rebel base, everybody fights and no one quits. No hand is spared in conducting short-range patrols and securing drop-sites, unloading further smuggled arms shipments advising the current rebel instructors with the newest recruits. You get yourself looked at, but don’t take any bed time once they patch you up. Your vital status improves by 1 degree. [Daredevil]

>Light duties for a week, then back into the thick of it. Stuck with organising the camp, administrative catch-up and advisory roles only, it’s not purely rehabilitation but still better than pushing on at fully active status. You want everyone rested and recuperated by the time scud inevitably hits the fan, which you figure will be coming along shortly. Everyone’s vital status, including yourself, improves by 1 degree. [Firebrand]

> You have to push the LT to sign off on it, but everyone takes mandated rest time with a few days off to boot. The outlets for R&R at the main rebel base are pretty limited, but R&R is still R&R. You leave Crane in charge of keeping an eye on them for the most part, spending the majority of your time in the medbay. Everyone’s vitals status improves by 1 degree. No one aside from Crane, Nines, and us are wounded, and Crane and Nines are Stable. Taking some R&R to make sure we aren't half dead would be good and because we didn't waste a month trekking back to the base we can afford it, it also gives us a opportunity to sniff out the thing Casket left out telling us. The only problem is it takes us out of the fight and presumably reduces the base's readiness due to our squad not helping out.

Despite his cool, professional demeanour during the debriefing you’re fairly certain the LT ‘Boy’ Blue is glad to have you back. Maybe you haven’t established yourself as -the- heavy hitter of the 77th compared to the more seasoned Prophet and Banshee squads, but you’re definitely a contender for first place given your track record to date and the high likelihood of any future engagements being located in your natural jungle habitat.

This is probably the exact reason that he’s less than enthused with your insistence that yourself and the Vinehounds get a few mandated rest days, but you convince him that your guys are no good to anyone being run ragged after a rough deployment. And one look at your scorched back sets him off quick enough, ordering you to the med with some choice words about being a ‘fragging idiot’ in coming to the debriefing before the medbay.

Not that the debriefing was all that informative either. The Savs are definitely wise to the rebel movement on Dis being a co-ordinated and substantial threat to planetary stability, the LT appears convinced that your recon recordings demonstrate that a full-scale deployment of multiple legions is underway. The capital Dis Prime and other major population centres was pacified during your time in the jungle hunting patrols of legionnaires, but that was to be expected. Your commander is certain that the establishment of a major base in the equatorial zones is a sign that the Savs are in this for the long run, which is exactly what your objective has been all along. He was quiet on the details as to whether the higher ups in Intel share the same view, but all the same the message was to keep your toothbrush packed. Not literally, as Crane painstakingly explained while you were funning him, but you and the 77th could be bugging out of here in the next few weeks. Months at the most.

Turns out that not getting shot at and not having to hike miles across rough terrain was just what the doctor ordered. That and drugs. That, drugs and the medical facilities at this converted smuggling den are actually pretty good. Not as top-shelf as the medbays on the Prince of Meggido, but sufficient to get you back in action. There are even a few rebels here with medical training, ranging from servants of Imperial medical officials to bonafide doctors that were enslaved and escaped themselves. You’d have done alright with just Petal looking after you, but with the uptick in hostilities the Belcossan medic certainly benefits from the extra hands. Or just hands, given how that term isn’t an apt description for his natural xenos appendages.

The medbay is full almost every day, the worst of the wounded rebels from other sectors are ferried through here. If they can be patched up, they are. If they can’t… they generally die in pain or with limited local medicines to soothe their passing. The rebels have grown no less frugal in their distribution of more advanced medicines since you first arrived. Most here in the medbay are survivors of a lucky Thunderbolt airstrike like yourself. You’ve trained the rebels passably well in jungle warfare, and they or those they have gone on to train are coming out on top of the legionnaires in almost every single engagement. But they’re not on par with the Cradler Auxilliaries, they couldn’t hope to be. Reports of contact with these elite Imperial operators are few and far between, there either aren’t a whole lot of them or they pick their targets very carefully. Maybe both. But the result is invariably similar to the fate of the 42nd Platoon, who sector cells wiped out with no survivors and grisly remains left behind. So far the damage is limited, even if sector commanders are taken alive they have very limited knowledge of the whereabouts of rebel cells. Won’t make their time with their hunters any less awful, but it will at least limit the damage they can cause.

Hail and Breaker in fact designed that organisation of the rebel cells that way on purpose, in conjunction with the LT when this main rebel base was first set up. This, in combination with the limitation to use of shortwave frequencies only, has hampered the cells abilities to form a cohesive force. But it also means that any victory by the Savs is piecemeal in nature. You're not blind to the fact that it would also make any effort at frustrating the Company’s eventual disengagement that much more difficult as well.

You wonder if the Harmonious Accords would curb some of those war crimes, not that it applies to insurgents. If the Savis leadership were worried about the optics of it they might have tried to keep their human hounds in check. Void, maybe they even are trying. But you of all people know it’s way easier to let Cradlers out of the bag than it is to stuff them back in.

Crane seems happy enough, though whether that’s because he’s fully recovered or because his handful of ‘days off’ have allowed him to catch up on the squad’s paperwork remains a mystery to you. It does at least looks he managed to requisition a replacement for your gunner’s sexbot arm, one which actually fits properly and doesn’t hold their heavy machine gun so sensually. Nines seemed a tad uncomfortable with how eager the whitelake SIG from Prophet squad was to install it for him, but hey who else was going to do it? Petal? As for the borrowed sexbot arm, that appears to have disappeared entirely and half-arsed enquiries with Convict and Bones have been met only with staunch claims of complete ignorance. Night Night offered a running bet that it would eventually turn up in one of their lockers, but you half-suspect that the sneaky Perspiran SIG stole it in the first place to get that scam going. She was offering pretty good odds though…

While you still feel like runny scud, it’s at least arguably a nutritious runny scud that would make for good fertilizer. It’s time for the old girl to get back on the hoverbike, but the LT doesn’t have anything for you right now outside of getting your squad to bolster security and other duties around the camp.

>You need to find Jorus, son of Fisk. The ex-legionnaire insisted on meeting up with you prior to your deployment to the front, promising valuable information. You didn’t get a chance before you left, and he hasn’t popped by the medbay since you got back. Maybe the info wasn’t as valuable as he claimed, or maybe it’s valuable enough that he’s keeping a low profile. [Daredevil]

>You need to find Wasp. The Company spook was pushing hard to get weapons and arms to the rebels for them to make a go of this. While some of that has actually materialised, it’s far short of what he was promising to the rebels. With a big offensive on the horizon, you should touch base with him and see where he stands. [Firebrand]

>You need to find Terrier. She was the first one to check out of the medbay, and she’s been pretty much off the grid on hear days off. You told her not to get too involved with the rebel leadership, or older men in general, but perhaps she’s been keeping her ear to the ground on the common rebel’s views in general. [Xenophobe]

Dis Planetside (Savis Empire) – Equatorial Jungles: League of Dis HQ – 15th Cycle September 2230AD

Locating the ex-legionnaire Jorus, son of Fisk, proves to be more difficult than you first envisioned. There’s no obvious sign of the Sav deserter during your foray around the camp, but you haven’t actually asked anyone where he might be hanging out just yet.

The main rebel base has grown extensively since your deployment to Delta Sector, tripling in size as the trickle of rebel recruits has become a flood. The LT has assured you that most cells are training their own people, with any new recruits vetted by seasoned rebels before being brought here. Nonetheless Hail’s brutal example appears to have caught on in his absence, there is a set of crudely erected gallows where suspected Savis sympathisers and infiltrators have been hung near the centre of the encampment. You don’t know what kind of process was applied to determining who failed what test of loyalty to the cause, but Jorus isn’t to be found there either.

It’s not just rebels that have found their way here either. Two Krieger platoons, the 22nd and the 81st, as well as their respective Pathfinder attaches have also set up camp here after extraction from their cells in the arid wastes to the north. They came in on the same dustorm that you were extracted in and seem equally beat up, apparently the Savis have been aggressively securing territory and whole sectors have been deemed untenable even in a guerrilla warfare standing. The 81st are largely unscathed but brought few rebels with them, apparently their assigned cell was rolled up before they ever arrived planetside.

Technically the 22nd have seniority over the 77th when operating in the same zone due to their status as also being stationed on the Prince of Megiddo and higher on the Company roll call, but LT ‘Longshot’ has deferred to your own LT’s command here. That the Three Pines officer is hooked up on dripfeeds and awaiting transit offworld following a close encounter with a Savis gravtank division probably has something to do with it. The rest of the 22nd not in similar straits are overall under half-strength, Word is the Legions are pressing hard everywhere, with the major focus being on population zones and priority mining sites. For now.

With the better part of three Krieger platoons based here, and at least triple their number in fighting-fit rebels, this base camp is probably the strongest League of Dis position on the whole planet. It is some comfort, though even reinforced like this you don’t rate your chances against the collected force of that massive Savis base you scouted should the location of the LoD HQ become known.

Given the camp's growth in size, you’re not surprised that it’s a little hard to find your would-be informant if he’s keeping a low profile. But after a full day of searching there is still no sign of the furry little rodent. You’re beginning to consider taking more obvious steps in your search, or even give up altogether.

===============================

> Tracking signs of a Savis rebel in a camp thick with activity will be difficult, but it avoids the issue of actually explaining yourself. You might get a few odd looks sifting through the camp for signs of his passing, but the odd behaviour will likely be written off by any observers as just another eccentricity of Big Mama Snake Eyes. [Daredevil]

> Asking around the camp for anyone who has seen the Savis sniper lately is the method most likely to net results, but also the most obvious in letting people know who you’re looking for. You have nothing to hide, and if necessary you will ensure Jorus has protection by sticking close to your Vinehounds. [Firebrand]

>You’ve searched for Jorus discretely and found nothing. The alien is probably wasting your time. If his information is really that important, he will doubtless come to you. As it is, you’re not going to risk drawing any attention to yourself. You have more important things to do than getting caught up in whatever internal rebel politics are at play here. [Xenophobe]

Just as a refresher as well, the mission objectives

++MISSION OBJECTIVES++
>PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Fires of Rebellion. Arm the local slave population and initiate a planet-wide uprising that will demand a Savis Legion response. Extract once confirmation of large scale Savis Legion deployment is confirmed.
>SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: Free League of Dis. Liberate, motivate, equip and train a sufficient number of slaves to ensure that the insurgency will persist to the point where crushing it will require a significant drain on the Empire’s resources.
>SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: Plausible Deniability. Keep any incriminating evidence of outside involvement in the rebellion to an absolute minimum. Witnesses, having members of your squad captured and other indiscretions will further the risk of this objective failing.
>TERTIARY OBJECTIVE: Finish your deployment with 50% Combat Effectiveness for Third Squad.

Seems we've done pretty damn well I reckon. I'm not 100% sure where we place on being a long term drain on resources but I hope we've equipped and trained them well enough to manage that. I worry that if we give them too much more gear we'll blow our cover. The extra credits will be nice if we manage all objectives

There was some BC/Rebel discord or something that makes Jorus talking with us hazardous for him or something wasn't there? Or something to do with Savis spies, I dunno.

Either way I guess we don't know, but I feel like we'd like to get some exercise after having been cooped up in the medbay for so long, we probably aren't eager to talk to some rebels we don't know and with so many of them being xenos at that.

None that you noticed. Since Sharky knows about the Legions in his past, I think Nat might at least be aware that there would be some slaves down there much like how Roman legion cohorts had slave clerks/menials as part of their organisational structure.

As slaves go, they have it pretty alright and there is an obvious avenue of social advancement in the auxiliaries. They’d also be offworlders that essentially live in their assigned legion. It’s not impossible that there might be some sympathisers to the rebel cause in their ranks, but it’s not the fertile breeding ground for rebellion anons might hope when compared to the vast majority of worse off slaves being worked to death in the mines. You’re more likely to have your ‘Uncle Tom’ kind of slave in their ranks.

An intriguing idea, but odds are the Auxiliaries are keeping track of how many slaves they have and who said slaves are. Given from their PoV they're dealing with a slave insurrection odds are an unrecognized, undocumented "new guy" skulking about would be treated with suspicion, if not open hostility. Though stick a pin in that idea, I could see it working in different contexts.

> 3 SUCCESS: Elementary deduction. You find Jorus. And, more importantly, you have some notion of the nature of the information for sale.

The body has been here for some time, though not as long as the exposed bone and decomposition might initially suggest. Scavengers have been at the corpse already, and in some patches grapplevines have picked the carcass clean right down to reveal the shiny white of bone. Despite the state of the remains, the cause of death is still obvious. Two rounds, both to the centre-mass that pierced the side of the scavenged armour. And a final execution shot that shattered their skull. You estimate that they’ve been here little more than a week, maybe even killed during the same duststorm that you and the Vinehounds were evacced out on. Jorus, son of Fisk, will soon be reduced to mere fertilizer for the Green of Dis. The jungle leaves nothing to waste.

It was a long walk from the main rebel base, the better part of an hour. For the most part your tracking led you along a game trail, but there’s evidence of less adept bipedal operators using this track. Outgoing patrols, maybe, but your training regimen quickly weeded out this kind of sloppiness even the recruits that were slower on the uptake. A cigarette butt here, a discarded ration wrapper there. On one branch you found a bracelet hanging there, as if left in the open on purpose to attract attention, inside there was a picture so faded you couldn’t guess at what it used to depict. Amateurish, especially given that they were using a game trail to get here. Your instructions to rebels were clear, never use pre-established trails. It’s just asking to be ambushed.

Despite their lacklustre survivalist skills, it’s clear that there was not a lot of them in the area. The ground hasn’t been disturbed enough, not by footprints at least. You’re probably looking at no more than a dozen to a score of individuals, and there’s no sight of them now. Whatever was going on here a week ago, it’s clear that nobody aside from the occasional wildlife has been here lately. Probably not since they eliminated their unfortunate hanger-on, you found Jorus’ body dragged not too far off from the game trail.

“This clearing is large enough for a ship.” Crane looks from the treeline to the rocky crags on the other side and revises his assessment with a purse of the lips. “A small ship.”

“Yeah, I can see the disturbed ground. Something definitely landed here and took off again.” You frown, it doesn’t make much kind of sense. “But why did they kill Jorus over it?”

“Because they did not wish for him to speak of what he had seen.” Crane replies with an arched eyebrow.“I would have thought the reason is obvious.”

“Very funny.” You snort, relatively certain that your Second is having a rare joke at your expense.

“I have my moments.” Your steady, and generally humourless, Corporal dips his head. “自分自身を軽く考え、世界を深く考えてください。”

You ignore the obligatory comment about Chinese ramblings for the low fruit that it is, and instead ponder the existence of this landing site. If it was just another supply run from the Company, they’d have touched down closer and on more even terrain to offload their smuggled weaponry and rations. Then there’s the fact that Jorus had been wanting to speak to you weeks ago, before Delta Sector. You were too busy prepping for your deployment to Delta Sector at the time, and maybe that’s on you. Jorus might still be alive and you might know what the frag was going on if you’d spoken to him then.

“Hmm.” You crouch down, fiddling with something in the dirt between your fingers. It’s a button, a bright blue button. “That discarded wrapper was a standard issue MRE. Company stock.”

“It was.”

“So. Not Imperials then.”

“Unlikely.”

“But also not us.”

“Equally unlikely, if note more so.” Crane cocks his head at you. “A puzzle, to be sure.”

“A puzzle. Great.” You close your eyes and breathe in deep, letting the air out through you nostrils. “I fragging hate puzzles.”

==========================================

>“Crane, head back until you’re in shortwave range and ping the Vinehounds. We’re going hunting.” This game trail isn’t the only one leading to this clearing. Whatever went down here was important enough to get Jorus killed, and you personally didn’t mind the little rodent. You might be stretching your senior NCO discretion by deciding to investigate this further. But better to ask for forgiveness than permission. [Daredevil]

>“Let’s head back. I need a word with the Breaker.” Whatever is going on here likely doesn’t have the approval of the rebel leadership. Hail and the Auxl Breaker could help identify the most likely suspects. You can still investigate, but back at base. Not out here. You will update the LT when you have something more substantial than ‘something is up’. [Firebrand]

>“Let’s head back. We need to take this to the LT.” This clearly has something to do with the rebels internally, but if it was anything to do with the Imperials then the rebel base would already be ablaze. If the LT wants you to investigate further, he will let you know. In the meantime, you have a brushfire war to light. [Xenophobe]

This isn't really our problem whether its internal politics, something else. Once we've set this planet on fire with the war we bug out. If the Lt feels its a risk and something important, sure, but for now this feels like a wild goose chase to find things we don't know to know about

My first instinct was to go for Daredevil, but >>5024601 is right, this doesn't really affect us so we might as well just kick it up the chain. I DO vote we have a talk with Breaker soonish though, still really curious about that warrior initiation thingy.

I'd rather be a little further along the evidence trail and have something substantial to give to the LT or Breaker, that and I'm not sure who to trust or what this means and I'd rather we know something closer to the truth before handing it off.

theirs a subtle way to figure this out at least in broad strokes, if we kick this up to LT either casually or in private and nothing happens to it then its likely Jorus stumbled into some company shit we're not being told about and well that answers the question of if its our buisness and LT will know whatever black ops shit hes doing needs better subtetly, however if the LT. formerly hands it back to us to do whatever then we know its external to our operations and probably worth looking into.

Close, but looks like this is one of those occasions where anons decide to stick their nose in the intrigue. Rolls tonight, but I’ll get a narrative update out tomorrow night hopefully.
Also voiddamn this was supposed to be a very difficult test but you guys are just so perfectly suited to operating in a jungle environment its not even funny. Perfectly justified, but hard to make anything not against fellow Cradlers a challenge…

Double Fail = AWOL. You are delayed and fail to check in with the LT before he notices you are missing. He doesn’t like that.
0 = Nobody out here… Fragging puzzles. You find nothing but a lot of wasted time in the jungle. Worse still, you have the sneaking suspicion that your search did not go unnoticed.
1 = Clues and hints. You find further hints at what is going on. But nothing concrete.
2 = A big piece of the puzzle. You’ve found… well, something. But it’s going to be damn hard to find out anything else without being very obvious.
3 = The puzzlemaker. Looks like you found what you were looking for, and there may even be an opportunity to get the whole picture if you nab the right person.
Double Pass = Busy LT. You make good time in your hunt, with time to spare before your next scheduled briefing is due.

>3 SUCCESS: The puzzlemaker. Looks like you found what you were looking for, and there may even be an opportunity to get the whole picture if you nab the right person

It doesn’t take too long to find the right trail, whoever has been operating in this area isn’t exactly covering their tracks too well. But despite the clues thus far what you find still comes as a surprise. Scores of makeshift tents dot the clearing, a third of the size of the rebel basecamp but with nothing even approaching a semblance of organisation or security. There are hundreds of people here, of every species. The majority of them are either very old or very young, though there are still plenty of people approximating fighting age among the folk crammed into this provisional camp. They all look like they’re carrying everything they’ve over owned on their backs. Admittedly, they wouldn’t be much for a slave.

You haven’t encountered a single patrol since setting up camp at the perimeter. Not one. And the few armed rebels you do spot appear mostly equipped with the same sort of beaten up second-hand weaponry the Dis guerrillas were using before your people started arming them. You do spot several smuggled crates around the camp, but these mostly appear to be containing rations packs and other necessities. They might be stealing from the main rebel base, but they haven’t been brazen about it. And if these amateurs are getting supplies through the constantly patrolled perimeter, they’re definitely getting help from the inside.

You can’t help but think the Cradler Auxilliaries are going eat these people alive if they find them. Or when. But your grim musing are distracted when your people report in something of interest, people at the edge of the camp that sound like they’re running this scudshow. Or trying to. Bones and Terrier send you a feed from their position over the helmcam, and the audio is good.

“We stopover for messageman, ke? Don’t head worry pretty birdie.” The speaker is a long-haired human female of dark skin, sitting back easy on a crate. A teddy bear dangles from a long necklace, a bright blue button proof of its only remaining eye.

“I’m not worried about our… mutual friend. It is your people I am far from settled on.”

“Is that…” Bones murmurs over the muffled ghosthelm comms.

“Sure is.” You recognise the Asandi immediately, despite the months since you last saw her.

Indigo Eyes, one of the escaped slaves huddled in that little arid camp when you first made contact with their cell. You recall her being a staunch pacifist or some bullscud. Clearly, her idealism didn’t spare Jorus a bullet.

Terrier hiss of disapproval over the comm almost sounds like static. “What the frag is she doing here?”

Hssk. Better question. Who in frag she talking to, da? Hssk.

“ Я нe знaю.” Your bilingual SIG sighs enviously. Showoff. “Mais elle a de beaux cheveux.”

“And she kissed her children in the sky, for they were ever closest to her lips.” You recognise the purr of happiness as originating from the newest Vinehound, Remember Seven. “That’s Voidborn slang. Real Voidborn, not this fake scud you people have been putting on for the rebs.”

“I thought my Voidborn accent was pretty good…” Convict grumbles.

“Aye, if you likem dem scissor scratching.”

“That’s hurtful, Seven. Real hurtful.”

“Quiet, kids.” You order the Vinehounds to cut the chatter. “I’m trying to eavesdrop here.”

Indigo Eyes and the voidborn human continue talking, with one other human hanging around nearby as a lookout. Not that he has a chance in hell at spotting your team in this terrain.

“Heyheynow, you thinkum me take a stretch leg on this dirtball for funnin?" Oblivious to your prescene, the Voidborn girl continues to flap her hands at Indigo Eyes as she talks in her odd litting lingo. "Birdie got lotsa looks, dem fine. But so komse trust, na?”

“I might have more trust if your henchman wasn’t constantly looming about the camp.”

“Who, Tuoni?” The stranger has a nice laugh, high and keening. Though a nice laugh doesn’t make anyone a nice person. “Soft teddyman he his. Probably hope for local kiddims join em scrumball team, nah? Ain’t it so, big hard Tuoni Lief Erikson?”

“Syö munaa, Shrivya.” There’s nothing nice to be said about the tall pale man standing nearby, other than that he probably knows how to use that assault rifle cradled in his shoulder.

“See? Big baby him.” ‘Shrivya’, you guess that’s her name, pats the hulking armed escort on the arm affectionately. “Likemesay our boy messageman got line right up wit bossman, voidmother sweet know them tight way back in the wen time. Myself got skin in that game too, call ‘em favour ifn it make sense to your pretty bird head.”

The escaped Asandi slave and the two Voidborn talk for a little longer, but mostly about logistical stuff like supplies and moving the camp if something doesn’t happen in the next couple of days. You’re not sure what that something is, but as they move apart you start assessing your options.

“Hey Remember Seven.” You chime in the only Voidborn member of your squad. “You know who these jokers are?”

“What, you think all Voidborn know each other?” You can practically hear Remember Seven shaking her head in disapproval over the comms. “But now that you mention it… those marks do look like the Rockhopper Gang.”

“Bad crowd?”

“Ain’t no good or bad in the space between spaces, bossman. Just breathing and otherwise.”

“Sounds familiar.” You’re reminded of the law of the Green. Funny how the rules pretty much stay the same wherever you go.

“Not the deadly threat we envisioned.” Crane’s tone is soft, even on the closed comms between you two. You find it odd how he’s gone from believing the rebels and you are all one big happy team to not really being bother by the death of Jorus. “But if your curiosity is not yet satisfied, prisoner could provide the final pieces of the puzzle.”

In the green, there are lots of options for flushing out prey. We can spook some local wildlife, or poison their water, or start a fire, anything that takes their full attention for enough time to remind them that while in space no-one can hear you scream, in the green there's no time to scream.

Double Fail = Inconvenient witness.
0 = Wrong place, wrong time. The difficulty with infiltrating a disorganised camp is that you never know what random passerby is going to walk right into your merry band of equipped killers. That sight is inevitably going to cause a panic.
1 = Oblivious targets. The Voidborn pair never wanders away from the centre of the encampment, with no chance of your team being able to secure them undetected. At least no one spots you though.
2 = Bag and tag. You have your opening, but you’ll need to tussle with the Voidborn and her bodyguard to pull this off undetected. Close Encounter test.
3 = Career in kidnapping. It’s like the two Voidborn stepped out for a piss and disappeared. Even they take some time to realise what just happened. And then the questions start. Leadership test.
Double Pass = VIP target.

>3 SUCCESS: Career in kidnapping. It’s like the two Voidborn stepped out for a piss and disappeared. Even they take some time to realise what just happened. And then the questions start. Leadership test.

I'll get these rolls out now, and the narrative update will follow tomorrow.

Double Fail = Rough and tumble.
0 = They breed them tough in the Void. You've got two Voidborn raiders in hand, but neither of them will talk.
1 = Am nospeak to no dirtballer. You've got some limited information. And they're not likely to say much more.
2 = Come come I knossa nussin. You've got a better picture of why they're here and what they're doing, but you want a chance at getting anything more actionable out of them you will have to escalate your methods.
3 = Brakeasy senpai, we all frends here ken? The raiders spill the goods, very free with their information. And you also sense that they're holding out on you when it comes to naming names.
Double Pass = Relevant intel on the Imperials.

Doing something unpleasant =/= Surrending agency.

Well in that case Nat has literally no personal agency, as her actions are dictated and chosen by something that isn't her, us and Forgotten.

>1 SUCCESS: Am nospeak to no dirtballer. You've got some limited information. And they're not likely to say much more.

Bagging the Voidborn is easy. Watching them wander around the outskirts of the camp, at the edge of the treeline, reminded you of a Hekeseek calf trailing after its mother in the Green back home. They were always the easiest prey, provided you could nab them before the herd noticed.

You pick your moment wisely, the raider bodyguard drops like a stone when you leap down on him from an overhanging branch. The girl Shrivya can barely make an indignant muffle when Terrier and Crane slam into her into the undergrowth, the two voidborn in your clutches and away. The whole operation, from walking in plain sight a stone’s throw from the nearest refugee to the rustling leaves left behind takes less than two seconds. Hot poison you’re good at this.

“Ah! Bite the deck, what de frag you do? Sneakier than a drip rate in an airduct...” Shrivya Lief Erikson spits as the gag is pulled from her mouth, staring about with a look that’s more outraged than scared. Her eyes narrow at your faces and gear. “You ain’t no Imps people. Rebel people? What you come take me for?”

“I’m the one asking the questions here.” You frown, non-plussed at their unflustered attitude.

“Aydem bossman, you holden dem guns. You in charge, ke.” Shrivya leans back, flexing her tied hands, and crosses her legs. “Go on be askin den.”

“Let’s start with just who the frag you are.”

“Name be Shrivya, first bosun of da girl Lief Erikson. No need for salutin’, we all friends here na? Dis here sleepyhead is Tuoni Lief Erikson, made big noises about keeping me all safe and unkidnapped so him well fired.” The chatty voidborn nods at the unconscious bodyguard before forward and winking at you conspiratorially. “ Poor boy. Him just trying to get in me hot pants, can hardly blame the man. I find meself irresistible too, high-G impact sexuality like. Terrible condition.”

You look back at your Second, who shrugs unhelpfully. “You’re first mate on this Lief Erikson? How many ships do you people have?”

“Oh many ship. Dozens. Hundreds! Nuff to blast dem whole Imp fleet outta Dis sky. We only sneaking dirtballer style so them Savies don’t get dem feelings hurt. Keep dem pride.”

Bones stifles a chuckle and puts his serious mercenary menacing face back on. You resist the urge to punch the chatty voidborn raider in the mouth. That might come later. “We know you’re with the Rockballer Gang. What in the void are you doing here?”

“Well you big war rebels took our crib, na? Enjoying our sweet digs?” Shrivya shakes her head “Best spot in the system for a layover and you dirtballers have to go on start killing other dirtballers all over it.”

“I mean -here-, with these people.”

“Not everysoul big tough war rebel like yeself. Many poor dirtballer just want off this rock ‘fore scud hit the ventilation shafts with dem Savies.”

“And why help? These folk ain’t got no money.”

“Helps me for dem karma.” Shrivya shrugs at an amused snort from behind you. It sounded like it was from Convict.

“Karma? Is that why you killed Jorus last week?”

“Ah, the little furball? Ken him as Imp runaway at first, no harm. But messageman say him gotta go, messageman one who put bullet in him. Dirtside grave for dirtside knave.” The voidborn raider squints up, purple eyes gazing steadily into the yellow of your own. “I ken you no like that. Savie friend of yours?”

“ I’m asking the questions here, I won’t tell you again. Who is your contact in the main base?” You remember them referring to this ‘messageman’ when talking to the Asandi Indigo Eyes. They must be the key, the link between all this. “Who has been siphoning supplies to you?”

“Tssh. You tink I grab you and ask you who all your friends dem are, you gon tell me?” Shrivya snorts, acting fairly oblivious to her dire situation. “Try dem other engine, maybe it got juice.”

“You’re talking a big game for someone sitting at the wrong end of a rifle, pirate.” You decide to go with the assumption that you’re rebel fighters, the self-built raider cover wouldn’t last long with this one.

“Lotta lotta stick dirtballer, but where dem carrot?”

“The carrot is I don’t fragging shoot you and leave you and your lover boy here for the grapplevines.”

Generally, when you threaten to shoot people they don’t roll their eyes at you. “That ain’t no carrot, just a stick painted like a carrot.”

“A Voidborn that refuses to sell out anyone. That’s novel.” Night Night smirks, not even glancing at the frowning Remember Seven standing right next to her.

Your glare shuts Double N up, the less people interacting with this prisoner, the better. If your cover as rebels is accidentally blown, well that won’t end well for them. Thankfully Shrivya just seems indignant at the generalisation, though with an odd take on it.

“Heyhey no fine, I sell out with the best of dem! I sell out anybody and everybody if I feel like selling dem out, whether for creds or keepskin.” You spot a hard look in her eye, something behind the congenial babbling nature that speaks to an edge hidden in this semblance of a talkative fool. “But messageman and me go way back. Way back for allofus. So I no feel like selling dem messageman out.”

“That loyalty could get you killed, voidborn. This friend of yours worth taking a bullet to the pan for?”

“Who is? Voidmother knows them worse things get people killed than that, dirtballer.” A shade of… something… flickers across the first mate’s violet iris, so fleeting you must have imagined it. “Ken me real, ken me good. I seen it.”

This Shrivya talks a lot but says little. In fact it’s difficult to shut her up, ordering her gagged again before she goes off on another tangent. You have two prisoners, but the soft touch has revealed precious little beyond the fact that there is an actual band of Voidborn here and they're helping those escaped slaves that having come rallying to the rebel cause. That and some of those that have are helping them, at the expense of some rebel resources. And rebel lives, judging from the fate of Jorus.

Maybe this is all you’ll get, or maybe you need to ask your questions with a little more… emphasis.

1) Further questions (likelihood of success depends on the question and selected technique below)
> [Write in]

2) Interrogation techniques
> You were always going to get your hands dirty. You knew that the moment you gave the order to bag these two. You’re no Fleshtearer, but breaking a finger or removing a toe does wonders in getting the answers you need. They may not have killed Jorus themselves, but they’re covering for those that did. You are not leaving without answers. [Extreme Interrogation] + [Daredevil]

> A little roughhousing should loosen some tongues. If you put the other Voidborn to the question, or use them as a bargaining chip, that should get the information you need. Mercenaries lead a rough and ready life, bending the rules or ignoring them altogether. But outright torture is a line you’re not willing to cross. Not for this. [Harsh Interrogation] + [Firebrand]

> These aren’t Imperial Legionnaires or alien minions, these are fellow humans. They’re not even a direct threat so far as you can tell, just opportunists with their own agenda caught up in this guerrilla war without wanting a part in it. You’ll ask your questions, but these folk don’t deserve a beating or mutilation if they refuse to co-operate. [Interrogation] + [Xenophobe]

>they're helping those escaped slaves that having come rallying to the rebel cause
*not come
>>
I'm still unsure what to pick for now, but as food for thoughts...

Indigo Eyes seems to know something about this 'messageman', so we might want to interrogate her about him. I doubt that she'll be as hard as the Voidborn to crack. We could ask how the Asandi got in contact with them and the messageman, and what her plans are however.

This makes it clear that the pirates have something to gain, the knee-jerk reaction is that they are just shipping off rebels back to slavers but there's no evidence yet. There's also a 'bossman' mentioned, we could pursue that line of questioning.
>>
I was right, they are those smugglers.

Maybe we oughta ask them questions about the Imperium, they may know hidden routes into relevant areas of the Savis cities or ways to bypass patrols, albeit out of date ways considering the legions are dropping now.

>>5028595
We'd have to bag Indigo Eyes first.

Otherwise, I guess ask the standard "what are you doing here, with how many numbers, with what equipment, for what reason"

I'd have to go over past few posts for more ideas but I don't really have the time at the moment.
>>
How about we just wrap them up nice and tight and send them as a present to boy?

messageman is totally wasp
>>
Personally I'm leaning towards starting soft with the "enhanced interrogation methods", so we can leave the door open for us to play nice gal in the future or to offer carrots as she says, that also leaves room for us to ramp up in the future. It always leaves the door open for the LT or Breaker to decide to go in either direction without us having spoiled the Voidborn's willingness to cooperate with the proper incentives should the LT or Breaker decide to play softball to start off with.

I feel like Nat, a survivor of the Green, understands that those who can't fight should run or surrender.

But since Shrivya isn't surrendering to us, that means she thinks she can fight us. Either that, or she cares enough about her contact to die to protect him. So he probably cares about her, so she can be bait to draw him out anyways.

Due to the interrogation being primarily non-physical, there is no bonus to the DC. But, at the same time, there is the possibility of the Voidborn being open to negotiating their release (if anons are so minded).

I don't know why but I like to think of Voidborn music being considered utter trash by most other humans.

Double Fail = Information goes both ways.
0 = No carrot, all stick. You get nowhere with Shrivya, and her bodyguard Tuoni is equally silent. Furthermore, their absence is noted.
1 = Not enough carrot. You get little in the way of further information, but at least no one has raised any alarms.
2 = More carrot, less stick. While further the information may be limited, you have the general picture of what’s going on the details of who is involved remain fuzzy.
3 = Naming names. Through guile you identify the leak in the main base. The Voidborn may even try to make a deal with you.

...heck
>>
>>5029603
Meh, this is really no big deal. As long as they aren't selling the rebels out to the imps, which doesn't seem to be the case, then it's not really a problem we should concern ourselves with. We got a bit of useful intel, so we can let these people go, action the intel, bug out off world and maybe build warmer relations in the future
>>
Well at least we got a double pass
>>
>>5029604
You really don't think this could give away our position if this turns into a long term arrangement?
>>
>>5029607
Why would this turn into a long term arrangement? We have a mission, it's all but complete, we'll be gone soon and the planet can burn with war after that (which is the plan anyway).

I doubt the smugglers want to make enemies with powerful people, be they Savs or some mysterious force who've swooped in and armed the slave population since they were last here.

We've chosen not to beat and torture their leader, instead questioning them for a bit before we (I assume) let them go. All pretty fair and considerate in the business of piracy and shadow wars

>1 SUCCESS: Not enough carrot. You get little in the way of further information, but at least no one has raised any alarms.
>33 Double Success: Relevant intel on the Imperials.

The bodyguard Tuoni Lief Erikson is even less talkative than Shrivya when he comes to, contenting himself with sullen glares at everyone, mainly you, while you ask your questions. But Shrivya, despite blabbing on and on and on, is telling you very fragging little. But while she is tight with giving away anything else about those she’s working with, she’s very free with information relating to the Imperials.

“Dem Savies massing all over the system. Counted seven-three ships when mama Lief Eirkson did her last run, and that was before dem last windy day.” The first mate of the Lief Erikson denies her bossman is scooping up the refugees to sell them on to other slavers down the line, though she admits that’d be a good racket. But this is being done as a personal favour, sort of, as payment for past and ongoing knowledge of Savis patrols in the system. Exactly the kind of knowledge a smuggler needs to keep their business going. Or a pirate. “Messy as a high-G landing out there. Big void storm across alla system. Anysoul wanting out gonna have to lie dark and dead, in bed with the Voidmother ‘till the rage downquiet.”

“Most of those are probably transports, but even so that is a whole Imperial sector fleet redeployed to this system.” Crane chooses to speak softly, despite the two of you talking well out of earshot of the prisoners. “If our recon of the base in Delta Sector did not confirm the success of our main objective, this certainly does. The Imperial war machine is on the move.”

“Well, that will make the LT happy at least. Won’t take Intel long to verify that kind of massive fleet movement. If they haven’t detected it already” You doubt the Prince of Megiddo is still in-system running dark, it’s too important. But there must be some Company presence hanging about if the Talon gunships are still doing their runs. “We can finally bug the frag out and leave this scudhole behind.”

“Not thinking of buying up some local property?” Crane nods, for some reason stifling a sad smile as he looks at your fresh scars. “ どうやら、それは火の販売です。”

“I hope you’re not trying to be funny again, this new streak of humour in you is making me nauseous.” You turn your attention away from your 2IC back to the Voidborn prisoners. “Now the question is what do we do with these two?”

“Who says we need to do anything we them?” Like you, Crane is also looking back at the prisoners.

“Cut them loose? Heh.” Your smile falters as you glance at your Second. “You’re serious? The moment we do everyone down in that camp will know we were here.”

[1/2]
>>
>>5029608
I'm not sure we are letting them go, at least not right away. I assume we are taking them back for further interrogation or negotiation unless she is gonna offer us a deal for her release right now.

We may also want to stick around to nab the bird as well.

Plus, she's a VIP, we can use her as leverage should we choose to negotiate with the smugglers instead of going in guns blazing to stop them from taking our supplies, assuming we don't just ignore them.
>>
[2/2]

Crane shrugs, another gesture that you don’t often see from him. “And do what, Snake Eyes-sama? Run us down with their handful of green fighters wielding rusty last-generation firearms?”

“Green’s Gooch, Crane. We’re talking about letting two intel assets loose.” You squint at your Corporal, questioning his judgement for the first time in a long, long time. “They’ve painted a nice story. But we don’t know the real deal. That’s for people above our paygrades to discern.”

"Justify it however you want." Crane leans in closer, he's already made his position clear on his loyalty to the upper echelons of the Company. "But we both know that once they get back to our camp, their chances of blowing our cover story as Voidborn raiders goes up just as sharply as their life expectancy goes down."

“Yes, and?” Despite your dismissive tone, you're entirely unsympathetic. You rather like the chatty Shrivya’s attitude, but still… It's not like you can go back and nab that feathery bitch Indigo Eyes without being spotted either, your people report that she has moved to the centre of the refugee camp. “You didn’t have any issue with the Savis officer we interrogated. If this is about them being human, well that’s admirable but we got our own humans to worry about…”

“It’s not whether they’re human or not.” Crane frowns, this one being a real frown by your judgement. “That was different, they were a fellow warrior. They made their peace when they donned the uniform. But these people... this is not their war.”

“This whole campaign is off the books.” You shake your head. “Technically, we’re not at war with anyone. And we’re sure as scud not at peace with anyone either.”

Your Corporal raises his hands. “I have said my piece, ボス. But I’ll follow you whichever way you play this.”

=====

> “Hmm. You sure are some kind of puzzle, Crane.” Damn shame the Voidborn raiders managed to slip their bonds like that. Even worse that they got back to the camp before you could catch them. Terrible stuff, that they’ll keep on shipping refugees out and posing a low-level security risk near the main base. Terrible. [Daredevil]

> “I don’t always agree with our LT. Boy has a ruthless streak, to be sure. But I ain’t taking the decision out of his hands either.” Your superior is going to be pissed at you going off on your own as it is. At least with two prisoners in tow you’ll have concrete evidence your little intel expedition was justified. And they might end up talking soon enough. [Firebrand]

>”They’re not saying much, and they could end up blowing our cover with the rebels. I don’t like loose ends, and I don’t like not covering our tracks. We ghost ‘em.” Pity, they seem like decent enough humans for a bunch of Voidborn raiders. But your people, and the mission, comes first. [Xenophobe]

These guys are just pirates, as Crane pointed out they can't really put up a fight against us and making enemies with us by slipping intel to the Savs doesn't seem all that likely either (They're pirates, they also seem to be sneaking people off world, either they're helping them or tricking Ingo)

I don't trust them but I trust that they'll be appreciative of being let go and they'll be able to see the big picture here. The risk is minimal, especially to the company. We gained some intel, but this whole thing with the pirates isn't our job. Time to cut ties and get back to work

The prospect of failing an ancillary objective for the mere potential of further intel to a side problem of the rebels on a mission we already have almost completed is not a pleasant one, especially since failing the objective costs us money. (XP)

However, I do not think them compromising us is guaranteed or even likely, we can gag em, and if Breaker or some rebel wants to see what the new prisoners who have intel on this side problem of theirs we can simply awkwardly refuse or kill em or let them go before that comes up.

All and all, we ought to bring something to Boy Blue to confirm our intel and to further wring anything else outta them. Not to mention if we can come to a deal with them we can avoid breaking our cover.

Honestly wouldn't be a reach IC. We know he's been drinking the cool-aide and if there is a leak that's been this sneaky and managed to set shit up with some actual smugglers there are few who could realistically pull it off.

Although I'm surprised there was no option to ransom them. Why do they keep asking for a carrot when they're captives? Like, they should be offering us carrots to let them go.

We need to keep these guys, because we don't want Indigo Eyes going off the radar before it's her turn answering some tough questions.

They are two pieces of a puzzle. She might be a pacifist, but when her only support group turns against her, I think Indigo Eyes will crack much easier.

They did still kill Jorus. And even though the rebels were supposed to end up dead anyway, they weren't supposed to be murdered by a third party. Damn dirty voidborn lawbreakers. Ugh.

Hey lads, I got held up so no update tonight. However, just so you have something to keep you busy, let’s get a vote in which Bro squaddies are engaging in further bromance during the trek back to the rebel base. I’ll even give the selected pair +1AV of plot armour for the remainder of this campaign. That should make the inevitable casualty rolls all the sweeter.

By my recollection the below two pairs are the ones that have bonded the most out of the members of Vinehound squad.

===================

1) Budding Bromance
> Gunner Nines and Medic Petal [What are they doing / talking about?]

> Sapper Convict and Signallier Night Night [What are they doing / talking about?]

2) Favourite Squaddie
>Who is it, and why do they rank number one for you?
>>
>>5031404
Crap those are hard

> Gunner Nines and Medic Petal [What are they doing / talking about?]

Do Androids dream of electric beats?

> Sapper Convict and Signallier Night Night [What are they doing / talking about?]

Bonding over Alchohol?

>Favorite Squaddie

Nines and Terrier followed by Petal, Nines is just a great brobot and Terrier is just a vicious kid

I want to pop beats with petal at some point.
>>
>>5031404
> Gunner Nines and Medic Petal
They are playing and discussing videogames.
Why? Because it'll be weird for both of them, and I want to see how Forgotten writes about it.

>Favorite Squaddie
Crane. He's just so comically serious.

>>5008275
>>
>>5031404
> Gunner Nines and Medic Petal [What are they doing / talking about?]

Talking about and sharing music. Turns out, when Gunner Nines was first built, one of the programmers snuck in a hidden drive full to the brim of every single greatest hit and a whole hell of a lot of not-so-great hits from every band and music artist in digital memory. Nines didn't know it was supposed to be secret drive and has generally been running tracks in the background, just not broadcasting them via his speakers.

He's now trading music with the cabbage, swapping hard to come back Earth music for some of the strange plant music native to Petals home world

>Who is it, and why do they rank number one for you?

This is a super difficult question. Convict turned out to be a lot more fun than I expected, you've developed him into a real character which is cool. Night Night is Night Night, she's great, sassy and aloof and Gunner Nines is the best killbot on this or any planet.

But you can't go past our best pal Crane. I love the contrast and character interactions between the two, the fact that we almost lost him as a friend and then saved his life and endeared him towards us again.
>>

I just realised it was Husk and Night Night that bromanced it up, not Convict. Poor Husk always being forgotten...
>>
>>5031404
This covers how I feel basically and what I'd support >>5031412

Though, as I understand it, we are voting for which one is developing their bromance further to the exclusion of the other pair and which one gets a plus 1 AV bonus, so if I had to choose I'd pick...
> Gunner Nines and Medic Petal [What are they doing / talking about?]

>>5008344
Me, though it probably isn't needed for this vote.
>>
>>5031447
I have a head cannon for why Husk wasn't in the cook up write-in that goes something like this:

>Door knocks
Goldie: "I'll get it!"
>opens the door; it's Husk looking all pale and gaunt without his respirator and gear.
Goldie: "Who are you?"
Husk: "It is me, Husk. тyпoй eбaть."
Goldie: "pfft... Nice try dude. Everyone knows Husk is a robot."
>*Slams door*
Nat: "Who was that?"
Goldie: "Ah, just some chode trying to get a free meal. Don't you worry mama, I took care of it."
>*Finger guns*
>>
>>5031549
I could see him making a quip about how Husk looked like he just spent a night with a vampire, and then while flexing point out where the med-bay is and to inform one of the staff that Goldie says hello.
