/qst/ - Quests

Sixteen men, plucked from their narratives. Thrown into a corner of the mistake of architecture and magic that is Gongalla Gaol by forces unknown to them.
Sixteen men enter alive...
Only one shall exit as a winner!

(Hello and welcome to the hopefully annual contest that showcases some of /qst/'s range of characters, let us hope it will be entertaining, at least.)

Our brave contestants, doomed as they are:

>Rondo von Metzeler

A man of honor, courage, and integrity; who rebelled against his own family to keep his morals; a man who stayed strong in the face of debilitating physical and mental trauma. Gallant, level-headed, unyielding, sharp, courteous, and an excellent swordsman.

STAGE ONE: HUNGER GAMES

And thusly introduced, our sixteen contestants enter a circular coliseum. In the center, five weapon caches lie buried just under the surface, helpfully marked as such - but what they don't know is that there are traps, hidden and unmarked, scattered about the arena.

>HOW THIS WORKS
This is /qst/, and we don't do simple grabs of popularity here. When you vote for your chosen contestant, also roll 1d100 - we will tally all of the roll results made in the name of a contestant, and that will determine how they fared in the current stage.*

*rules may change per stage, but rolling is required.

>What's the toughest thing the Messenger could fight and win against?

Martin Luther.
>>
>>5090821
For Ungluck, he could beat and kill pretty much anything, mortals, gods, unholy monsters and giant autistic space robots. The only time he was truly defeated was when he tried to overthrow his dad, the Demiurge. But it's all good, that battle was a non canon simulation made as a joke by said Demiurge.

For my own OC, the Thing, at the moment it could stand toe to toe with a squad of well armed and trained soldiers, and anything it kill and eats or Communes with he gains their adaptations and mutations, as well as absorbing their "soul" into his own mindhive. So theoretically, if he could even just lick up the blood of a god or say, a Primarch, he would gain their abilities and mutations/adaptations, which basically means that the tougher things he kills and eats, the stronger he becomes so he can kill and eat more things to become stronger and so on into fleshy infinity. Just don't hit him with a flamethrower.

In theory, Gil could win against about any normal moderate-sized creature by biting out their eyes and clogging their nose and throat until they suffocate. In practice, he's not quite psychologically prepared to do this... if he has to be involved in combat at all, he'd much rather play a support role. His sense of self-preservation (or impolitely his cowardice) is too strong to pick fights unless it's a desperate situation.

In his current, tar ridden state? Not much. He's trained in combat but his tar condition has left him pretty lackluster in physical combat (mental based combat would be a different story)

In his prime? What >>5090855 said. He used to handle some of the more dangerous anomalies before becoming what he is today (up and including fighting a giant tree beast spreading throughout the whole facility with nothing but molotovs), so he's used to fighting things way stronger and way bigger than him.

Well it goes without saying that if anyone can take down the nefarious lich holding Clearwater, California hostage, it's BORIS PONDEROSA. Having already taken down the nefarious skeleton pirate Captain Mendoza with his bare hands along with countless other bony baddies, the real question to ask here is what CAN'T he win against?

This is a man who has killed all doubts--a man who keeps getting back up even in the rare case he gets knocked down! Even with a career-ending injury, Boris bounced back, damn it, and using the magical mask bestowed upon him and the help of his stalwart allies Curt and Bea, there's no mountain this font of confidence can't move!

Dude totally lifts, too.

Dear god...
What a bloodbath.
Lieren starts off strong, and even managed to reach a spear! But, seeing the seemingly weak Gil cowering in the corner, Lieren moves to protect - but stepped on a land mine! Sorry, several land mines! The genetic demigod fell unconscious from the shockwaves! The explosion also scared off Thing!
Quattro tripped on his first step into the arena, and fell straight into the secret Lifewater stash that the Liquid Vendor hid under the arena! He's hopelessly lost in the sauce!
Emile Andrei and Rondo von Metzeler raced towards the swords stash, but Rondo was the faster one! Deprived of a shield, Emile tried his best but finally yields to Rondo!
The Messenger saw Ungluck and fell into a crisis of faith! Just as he reasoned it out, he slipped on the Administrator's black tar and knocked himself out!
Right at that moment, Kinja managed to get into a philosophical debate with Ungluck and the Administrator and lost! As per a gentlemanly agreement, Kinja forfeits!
Feeling the rush of mana, Edwin tries to cast a spell on Hotspur who found a wooden bat and was busy fending off Jocko's attacks, but Hotspur managed to throw Jocko right on Edwin! The spell was botched, and instead of a fireball, Edwin and Jocko are now entombed in crystal!
Boris and John traded blows, but just as John was gaining the upper hand, the stage gong rings, signaling the end of the match!

The quarterfinal stage, Red Light Green Light, starts in about 12 hours while the survivors recuperate. In the meantime, what sort of mechanics would you like to see in the quarterfinals?

>□ Keep current mechanic (vote + roll, sort by average roll result)
>□ Set a number to roll against, count the number of times the roll passes (roll over)
>□ Use the roll tally method (vote + roll, sort by sum of roll result)
>□ Just count the votes
>□ Best of 3 per competitor
>□ Other (fill in)

I'll take some time to think on this one. I still think average should be considered here cause if a player gets a lot of votes and gets critfail while someone gets like a bunch of 85<x tier votes, then you know that the guy that rolled a lot of crits is the loser.

>>5091411
Shitstorm indeed.
>>
>>5091410
>Best of 3 per competitor

This current method is actually detrimental to people rolling for the character they want to win. Lieren for example had the overwhelmingly largest vote share, which caused him to lose because his average was lower than some of the other characters who was only voted for two or three times. The current system gives advantages to less popular characters since there are less rolls to dilute the average dice roll if you manage a high roll.

>Set a number to roll against, count the number of times the roll passes (roll over)
>Use the roll tally method (vote + roll, sort by sum of roll result)
These two incentivices samefaggotry because the more people roll, the higher the chance of passing the neccessary check to win.

Best of 3 and then combining that with the voteshare to determine a winner is probably the least bad system.
>>
Yeah, taking an average of votes is a really bad idea. It just means the least popular character with the best roll wins.
>>
>>5091401
>□ Set a number to roll against, count the number of times the roll passes (roll over)

Otherwise it's just a poll. This option however still makes more votes = more chances.

I'm just happy Gil got further than Charlotte because that's a gonna be some good art fuel.
>>
>>5091422
Just require people to use the same IDs, or linkback.

> Implying people haven't alrrady samefagged.

TBF the averaging did make samefagging actually worse for the character, if anyone samefagged the last vote.
>>
>>5091429
It didn't just make samefagging worse, it made voting worse. A character with 1 vote passed and a character with 8 votes didn't.
>>

Also good crap how strong was Boris' stone mask again?! Must be very strong if he was going toe-to-toe with John and I cannot wait until he kills the next two skele-bosses and Tim as is his true destiny.

I would imagine John would find Stan no different than handling a very rabidthirstyraccoon, but I don't even think his mutation would prepare him for an encounter with the unholy being that is Stan. Dammit now I have to draw something hopefully before this tournament ends.

Our eight survivors, now refreshed, are now led into another room, survival on their minds.

STAGE TWO: RED LIGHT GREEN LIGHT

"Salutations, contestants!" said the dummy at the other end of the room, whose glass wall shows a vista of neverending sunset. A nostalgic, heart-rending sunset. "To survive this stage, you simply just have to reach this boundariment near me. Caveat, you must absolutely not move when I turn my head like this, else suffer the consequences. A word cautionwise: this room is not so keen on the exactitude of its dimensions, so it may seem that this is a short distance you have to traverse. Wait for the horn to begin, please."
All the while, the sunset burns with longing.

>HOW THIS STAGE WORKS
Pick a contestant you root for, and roll. Best of 3 rolls per contestant will be compared against the average of the rolls I'm making in this post. Four contestants will proceed, and four contestants will fall...

And the horn blows! Quick, roll for their souls!

In a staggering turn of events, the dimensional veil that was keeping the /qst/ dimensions separated has opened very briefly, and in spilled a very notorious raccoon-demon from a certain bone-themed quest.

So far, upon seeing Boris on the ground, she's gone into a stupefied state and keeps muttering things like "Boris-killing-arm" and, "it finally happened..."

John, on the other hand, desperately needs an adult and is still unsure if Stan is a human with a racoon-mutation or a raccoon that mutated into a human. One things for certain though is that she's really stuck there-- those BONE-CLAWS aren't meant for show!

Nah, QM should just roll with disadvantage for them. -20 for the first QM roll, -40 for two, -60 for no votes.

Boris comes next, stomping across the line, while Administrator and Gil needs to catch their breath afterwards. Boss slipped by unnoticed, while John tripped near the finish line! Good thing he managed to tap himself into the line right as Sierra turned her hesd around again. Rondo is not so lucky - caught mid-sprint, he eats Borges' punch right in the face.

With only a brief resting period, the contestants now enter The Dome, one of the Pyrovore Cult's more spacious proving grounds. Here, they were instructed to thought-craft their own vehicles for the next stage. Boris made a mini-Zamboni, Gil accidentally thought up a mini-Beetle, John chose a motorcycle, a bicycle for the Administrator, a tricycle for Boss, and Ungluck... er, suffice to say a god of chaos' chariot defies common sense.

STAGE THREE: THUNDERDOME

The rules of this stage:
1) Use your vehicle to eliminate the other contestants.
2) Do not step out of your vehicle.
3) Only two may leave.

Then, the contestants are ushered to their own, equidistant side. From above, gouts of flame could be seen blazing over the domes, as a siren blares - the sign to commence vehicular manslaughter.

>Boris
If there's a crime for being a perpetual smarmy bastard and kill-stealing, then lock him up and throw away the key!

Otherwise he'd be guilty of not carrying a permit for those GUNS of his! Yow!

>>5094628
Pretty sure B-man ate it this round, but assuming he doesn't die horribly in the aftermath he's totally inviting the other contestants over for a BBQ to watch The Game. He's grilling, of course!

Stan is gonna be over-the-moon knowing she got further in HER tourney... better keep her away from the sugar for a while.

Whoops, nevermind about the conclusion taking 12 hours to tally.

Carnage erupts in the Dome!
While aggressive driving is most likely to aid in winning, Boris was a bit too aggressive, plowing his mini-zamboni into Gil's beetle car! Thankfully Gil had already evacuated himself before the crash. John turns it into a three-way accident as he loses control of his bike due to a certain black liquid, sending him flying into the air! Meanwhile, Ungluck floats by, seemingly assured of his win, when Boss drifted outta nowhere in his tricycle and broke Ungluck's chariot! Meanwhile, Administrator just swerves right through the pandemonium, calm and collected - which is why he and Boss qualify for the final stage! What a match, what a match!

-- SURVIVED --

Administrator: 81

-- ELIMINATED --

Final stage in 12 hours.

>Boss
He already killed at around ~50 people in one explosion and is responsible for the deaths of others before he was recruited into the MC's party.
>what kind of crime is your contestant most likely to commit?
Yes.

>>5094664
>Boss actually made it to the finals
Holy shit

>>5094668
Get rekt, mutant traitor! lmaoooooo

Also not that it matters, but John did get a roll. >>5093693 Still got the lowest roll regardless.
>>
>>5094809
Oof, note to self: always double-check, and do the tallies when not half-asleep.
>>
>>5094664
Preparations ran longer than expected, but the final stage is now ready. Set in the depths of the ceiling, where reality frays at the edges. We are at The Fingers with our two competitors, who have been given weapons forged from their worst crimes or their worst regrets.
On one side is Boss, with a sword bigger than itself, crackling with the power of explosions.
On the other is the Administrator, with a rapier made of oozing black tar, bleeding slowly onto the arena.
Each has been promised a prize they named if they win. Boss wants the real body he's denied, while the Administrator just wants a week of vacation.

A sound echoes in the depths, signaling the beginning of the fight. Only one shall come out as the winner.

>HOW THIS STAGE WORKS
Same as previous round, which is best of all rolls. Voting cutoff in 24 hours give or take.

You can tell by the context, but did my vote have to explicitly state "Admin" to count?
>>
>>5095604
It probably would’ve been more prudent to clarify on the vote and wifi, yes. I think, given the immediacy of you clarifying your mistake, your vote, and the lack of objection from jsDw/tqZ, that the roll should count as a vote for Admin. Try not to jobber it in an entirely new way next time, alright?

Our finalists have a traditional staredown, the all-encompassing silence broken only by the soft crackling of Boss' sword and the slow drip of Administrator's rapier. Time seem to freeze into eternities here at The Fingers...
But then! In a sparkling explosion, Boss propels himself into the air! Utilizing directed blasts behind his sword, he aims to launch an aerial vertical slice! The Administrator's rapier moves fluidly, and the darkness of the deep ceiling seem to flow with him...
>>
>>5096779
And there! A singular strike!
The Administrator's rapier flows across the air, narrowly dodging Boss' blow and simulaneously delivers a counter-attack! One that Boss cannot evade, due to his trajectory. With nary a whisper, the Administrator has signed Boss' death warrant with a flourish.
Thus stands the last husbando, the ultimate winner of this year's tournament! The Administrator can now take a week off in vacation days!

Thank you for all the contestants, the audience, and even the critics and the trolls in attendance. Merry Christmas, happy new year, and happy holidays.

A MACHINE THUS BEHAVES AS A MACHINE.

Wow what a close call— would’ve loved to see what would’ve happened in the event of a tie, but someone’s gotta win. In any case, great stuff all-around!

Thanks a bunch for hosting! Hope everyone has a good Christmas Eve.

"Wait, shit, what are we supposed to do now without the Administrator? For a whole week?"
"FOOLISH assistant of the PRUDISH KIND! as the GREATEST assistant to EVER EXIST, i shall be TAKING OVER FOR the WEEK HE IS gone."
"ADMIN COME BACK RIGHT THIS INSTANT."

Good shit. That one point difference was kino.

I'm just happy Gil made it all the way to round 3. Gil, he doesn't job surprisingly often.

Damn I'm shocked he made it to finals, thanks to everyone that voted for him. Hopefully I'll be able to continue his quest in January, look in /qtg/ for future updates.

The waifu tournament was better
>>
>>5097560
No shit.
>>
>>5097560
The initial mess with average voting kicking out all the most popular contestants soured me a little, NGL. Still, the art and narrative structure was cool! Excited to see how next year's goes.
>>
>>5097560

shiddy b8 but the format and art made it tons of fun. If OP hosts another waifu tourn next year, I'm wondering if it will copy the pageant-slash-vote format like this year's or deathmatch format like the husbando one.

>>5097876

Personally didn't expect that myself. I was banking on the contestants with the highest amount of votes to win the first round.

If it were based solely on votecount alone, then it would've been a fight between Lieren, Ungluck, or Admin for champion title.
>>
>>5097876
The average voting was my favorite part

Hey, did anyone archive this thread yet?
>>
>>5119770

Looks like someone archived it-- it's been in the archive for a couple of days.

As a general message, don't forget to give the quest an upvote, frens!
