The nearest bathroom has the door closed when you approach it. You give it a gentle knock.

"Ah, sorry. I just started, I'll just be a minute!"

All good, you head to the kitchen for your breakfast.

JONES puts his glass down and fetches you a plate. It smells like a bacon sandwich. He has cut them into quarters diagonally and arranged it into a sailboat for you.

It comes with a apple and guava juice. Nice.

Jones grabs some mugs from a nearby cupboard

"That is not so unusual, surely? My understanding of the Everking is that he is neither good nor evil. He simply approves of death. Of more bodies beneath the soil. You perhaps have an aptitude that he can spot. Some connection to death or death magic"

RICHTER closes her eyes and thinks. She smiles serenely.
"Once touched by him, it could be a part of him follows you. That is possible"

She opens her eyes and glances down at you reassuringly
"Or perhaps...you simply have a fertile young mind and to have seen something so immense and powerful at such a young age has caused you to see him where he is not. You have no shortage of imagination, boy."

"Our main goals are to kill at least a plurality of them, then loot the depopulated base."

"Mike, Highball, do you think you could infiltrate and sabotage any ships or watercraft separately to the potion drop-off? Your main tool would be dynamite, but I don't know if we have any slow-burning fuses."

There is some murmuring around the room. Richter, Mike and Burstock are all exchanging glances. Richter shoots an almost pleading look to Burstock who shrugs and steps foward.

"heffe, we mean no disrespect but I think, at least in the short term - won't the explosive crate delivery be enough until further notice? It'll mess them up, even retreat, close out contract with them..because of the bozos we met last night we'd even have deniability. We could make more crates, I think, with the right supplies but.."

Mike steps forward
"Maybe we can make the delivery, then see what we have to do - if anything. They might be practical enough to cut their losses. I mean, sure, if they get an ID on any of us in the future they'll throw down, but those will be small potatoes, right?"

Highball chimes in
"If you wanna plan something, though, I mean - we're all behind you"

there is a series of nods.
>>
Ok I say we make a democracy of this and vote, 1. Go for broke and attack 2. Just the crates and wait 3. Act natural and slide on over.
>>
>>5515583

You nod sagely at the council of your crewmates. You make it clear that you hear them and put forth a democratic vote.

Highball organises everyone and get's their opinion, taking notes and finding the closest thing to a consensus.

What the crew desires (at least those that care to offer an opinion) is to use the remaining week to prepare. Put a little reward money toward a runabout craft ( a small rowboat ) and a few more explosives to pump up the order.

If possible, even recruit some more crew, but that's a long shot.

The plan they like is:
Add a few more crates to the order, up to another 10 on top of the nine promised.

Before the delivery day, use a craft (or rent a bet-bet) to approach the OG camp at night and not be seen scout it for weaknesses, disable weapons, get read of their fire precautions that sort of thing. The party would all have to be people who could sneak properly.

The delivery gets made. Huge explosion. If they're dumb enough to not leave we consider a weapon for the ship or a stealth assault on the remnants.

Other options may seem appealing after collecting our 5000g bounty.

The crew seems happy. But open to a clearer plan, in the event you have one.
>>
>>5515864
Sounds good to me, if possible we should try to arrange it so that not all crates get stored in the same place before they blow up
>>
>>5515864
That is a good initial plan I think. We can refine it more if we can think of something before the zero hour.
I suppose ask if there is anything else anyone wants to add to the agenda and if not then conclude for now and prepare to head to Kretch.
>>
>>5515864
If I remember correctly, the Old Guard's entire shtick is that they are very orderly. Rigid. If we can get any intel on how they would respond to a problem or attack, they'll probably still use the same play book. The Old Guard may be more underground now, but there still might be some books or hell just people that have also had to deal with them that might know something we could use.
>>
>>5515864
So Highball & Mike could probably recon the camp, since they're all right sneaky. Karl's a detective, so he's probably good at recon.

Personally I like the idea of wiping out their local chapter, making a nice thorough job of it. It might be a bit much at the moment, but I think Joey & Co. could manage it.
An assault on the base would have to be well-planned, though.
>>
>>5516263
I feel like we should assume these people are competent at security. We should try to get some kind of spy glass so we can do long range observation before we send anyone in close. I don't imagine they treat captives well.
>>
>>5516341
For clarity's sake, I don't want to send anyone in to harms way until Joey has a plan which the whole crew is comfortable with.
It's just that when dealing with chapters of pseudo-traditionalist terrorists, I prefer to wipe them out wholesale rather than just bloodying their lip.
>>
>>5516004

To my mind, the two things most likely to go wrong are 1) they open a crate at the drop point to inspect the goods and 2) they retaliate instead of backing off (especially if they target people's family/friends), so we need a plan for those at least.
>>
>>5516826

Highball manages to organise the information as best she can and begins making rough notes on the whiteboard.

"Okay, so. We make the drop in 6 days, and will do it at night. We'll make sure the OG can see, us, but we'll make the drop at night. Some where they can't get by foot."

Mike chimes in
"Before that point, me, Nep and Karl..?"

Karl nods
"I'm no combatant, but I don't mind gathering intel. I still owe you."

Mike nods
"The three of us will scout the camp. Again by night but not via the airship. We will either buy or rent a rowboat, some sort of raft or rent a bet-bet from Kretch"

Karl winces
"I would prefer not the last one..."

Highball nods
"We get rid of all their firefighting supplies, soak their blankets in mogspit, that sort of thing, lay some dynamite in the right places, soak their gunpowder etcetera. Our best option for the crate drop is to make so a few more that they'll need a lot of men OR a ship to move them back to their base easily. SO we leave them on nearby island they can get to. Real small. 8 metres by 10."

Surrey raises her hand , apologetically
"I'm afraid, I'm already quite busy and won't be much good for making explosive crates."

Highball winks at SUrrey
"Don't do a lick more than you already are, gorgeous. We can probably find a guy. We've met a few weaponsmiths already."

Highball taps the board
"Now, if we had to pummel them, where could we find some help?"

"Scadam?"

"Naw. they're still rebuilding."

"Maybe one of the nearby forest communities will help us, no that we have much rapport with them.."

Bustsock muses
"Some people train in the crags because of all the unquiet dead. Might find some muscle there."

Highball nods
"If the boss fancies it. I reckon we got a lot of muscle right in this room."

"Sorry, let me clarify: this would be set off separately to the crates? So big base burn-down, then deliver the crates, then maybe we go in and mop up?
Or is the idea that you set the base up as a tinderbox, then they take the crates back and open them up, and that touches off the firestorm?"

More than he's worth. Better to sell him for fishing chum."

Your business here concluded, you proceed to the fountain in the town square, reasoning that Jorn might have returned there. She has.

Jorn is asleep as is Lettuce. Lettuce is a much noisier sleeper.

While we wait for Jorn to stir, ask HB and Karl if they have any theories as to the identity the local Mayor. It's a neat little place even if guards are perhaps overly enthusiastic about their work.
Personally I find Doctor Ash likely candidate, since out of all the folks in town he seems like the adventuring type. Furthermore since we overheard the guards say that the Mayor considers us "cool" enough to allow passage, it suggests we have met them in person for them to make this assessment.

You turn to Karl and HB
>"So who do you think the mayor is?"

"McGillicutty." Karl's tone is flat.
"The waffle guy?" he gestures appropriately with his cigarette.

You and Highball glance at him.
"I'm a seamus, yeah? This is the one flex I'm comfortable with."

"man, I always thought it was the doctor."
Jorn is on awake and is sitting up on the bench, she places Lettuce to one side.
Jorn stretches and pushes her shoulder blades together sending an errant waistcoat button whizzing past Karls head. If he notices he doesn't react.

Jorn stands up and smiles.
"I'm all certified now. Been a busy few days!"
she holds her magic licence weirdly close to your face.

Joonda University. That makes sense.

"Is there anything you wanna talk about, or are we just heading off to tussle some fools?"

Jorn holds up her fists, ecstatic.
"Oh, shit yeah. Jorn is.... ready.... to kick some anus"

That would have been a pretty weird way of putting it, even if Jorn didn't pronounce anus wrong. Well, whatever.

Karl clambers onto the bench.
"That's my cue to look after the cat. You three have a ball."

Jorn's manner of walking looks more like The Electric Slide than anything resembling a walk until your party exits the town gate. At which point she walks normally.

It is eerily quiet for all of 85 metres until you walk around some rocks and encounter some STRAGGLERS.

Jorn screams like a pitch shifted elk and produces a crackling steam from her body at the sight of them.

Roll initiative! First in best dressed.

The STRAGGLERS strike first!

Each PISTOL THUG shoots into each party member. The ones that shoot at you and Jorn seem disappointed you weren't hurt more. The one who shot Highball, though, is happy enough.

One calls over their shoulder to the BRUISER, who is wielding a baton.
"Keep em busy next turn while we reload"

The BRUISER begins psyching itself up and begins to twirl.

It is your move.

She does
Highball uses BLADE HAIL on the enemies. Skewering their shoulders, legs, faces and groins. They wail and look around. Starting to wonder if they messed with the wrong wanderers.

Jorn clenches her fists and breathes heavily for about another six seconds before calming down and breathing easily. A little steam dissipates from her.

"Hoo! That was great, I think? No? I had fun."

Jorn puts a hand on her hip and drinks a can of healing potion.

Jorn finishes her potion

"Fuck yeah."

WHile you walk back to town, you do wonder.

>"Jorn, what was that? I think I saw that guy's spine go through his head."

Jorn does what you can only describe as the hem hem of ahems and smiles.

"That's a technique I mastered! It's called ROARING BLOOD and I cast it as a free action. It multiplies any barehanded attack damage by four."

Jorn walks slightly more into your eyeline, holding up four fingers, in case you weren't sure.
"Now, I already hit harder the more I'm hit, but this goes on top that! SO that uppercut should do 25, but it had a multiplier on it cause I got hit. That NEW number was then times by four - resulting in that overkill we saw."
Jorn is something of a hand talker.

Jorn goes back to walking normally, as opposed to a salesperson following someone.
"Only problem is it hurts to use, and only lasts 3 rounds. So I gotta bust em up quickly. Should be no problem in a party, though."

Highball stretches and beams
"Dang it felt good to be back in action!"

"How did it go, Mr Donuts?"

"Chick's some sorta heavyweight champion of the universe. Punched a guy's conk off. A real bim." Highball gestures appropriatly.

Karl stands up off the bench.
"Not what I pictured, but sounds useful for your line of work."

Jorn's pupils dilate when she sees Karl, like she only just noticed him properly. Karl takes a small, instinctive step back.

"Same tie!"
Jorn enthusiastically grabs her own neckware.
"Same brand I mean. That's a Ruckblende, right? Pajak silk."

Karl does a relieved little smile and pats his chest.
"Oh, I wouldn't know. This here was a gift from someone with a bit more kale than me."

The four of you proceed to the office of Doctor Ash. He is reading as usual. He glances your way when you enter and stands up, inviting you in. He looks over your group.

"You keep a commendable variety of company, Mister Donuts. Even for these parts. How can I help you today?"

He crouches down and begins looking at Highball's shoulder
"Besides the obvious."

>"Eh, what's up doc? I wanted to ask you about how to fight some paranatural wildlife, like green slimes. I've just been running every time I run into one."

"Good idea."
The doctor looks up at you, approvingly.
"But not always an option, I realise. Well you're not going to want to bother with slashing or blunt weapons, no barehanded attacks, bullets or anything. No what yo need is magic or one of those fancy weapons that does equivalent damage. Those blyskawica packs the factotums use to fight ghosts might do well, for example."

He puts the last stitch in Highballs shoulder and stands up. He flick open a thin case and places a cigarette in his mouth.

"Now you might think, if its acidic you put something basic on it, if its basic put some acid on it. Neutralise the thing. And I can see why you'd think that. Its good science. Do you mind?"

Karl shrugs, sure.
Doctor ash crouches down and lights his cigarette using the tip of Karl's already burning one.
He stands up and continues pacing.

"Problem is, the slimes are designed to adapt to that specifically so they can dispose of any form of kitchen waste or scientific waste. Cant have your disposal system stop working cause you throw out some vinegar or avocados. There is a substance. A special potion made just for that. Utterly beyond me how it works but it utterly neutralises the slime. Turns it into green water basically. That stuff is pretty expensive, though. Generally sold in big cities in high end adventuring shops."

He exhales some smoke.
"I feel like freezing it might work well, if you get a potion or spell that can do that. I know they exist."

Doctor John leans on his desk and pushes the kidney bowl on it to one side of him.
"Anything else I can help with?"

>"We came face to face with slimes who turned to be resistant to both physical damage and magical damage. We tried fire, but the creature proceeded to smother the flames. What is the most effective way to deal with slimes outside avoiding them?"

Doctor Ash's eyes widen.
"Mercy me, really? That one must have picked up resistances. That is fascinating."
He bandages your wrist
"And absolutely horrifying."

>"A whole corner of Jarka forest appears to be swarming with Dissolver beetles. We suspected the creatures might have a nest in the area, but did not want to look for it at the time. Do these beetles have nesting habits and would their nests be worth investigating."

He purses his lips.
"Only if you're farming chitin or potion ingredients. Their fluid doesn't dissolve precious stones, but they still collect them. Gar knows why. So if you bust up the nest their COULD be jewels in it, if they've collected any. Doesn't mean they have. The good news is, they don't seem to have a queen. The bad news is, the nests go underground and hold about 20."

>"Crags have come up in our discussions and it's reputed to be more dangerous location with undead than usual. What makes the unquiet dead more dangerous than say your average skeleton found in Kiani forest?"
He draws deep, and thumbs open a book in front of you, it has basic diagrams of the undead.

"Well the ones in Kiani forest are just regular folks, adventurers or merely unlucky people who perished there. They're getting up and wandering around because the EVERKING has a manifestation in that place. They just wander and dumbly flail."

He gestures to a drawing of a much more vicious, spectral creature and a skeleton in armour with a sword.
"The draugr is bound to one spot. 8 feet by 4 feet. But they are consumed by vengeance. The longer ago they died the more their spirit, their ghost goes insane and grows infuriated. Soon, none of that person remains. A draugr is ghost but it can still see, smell, consume and inflict harm all the while the only thing that can demanifest them - even temporarily is magic or energy damage. The only way to get rid of draugr permanently is with a thanomagus. It's why they do there to train. Good place to work on their 'banish' spell."

he takes a final puff then crushes out his cigarette.
"Technology marches on, naturally and the factotums have come up with something for that too, but I don't really know about it."
he points to the armoured skeleton
"Also, the wandering skeletons at the crags are old soldiers from the war. Even old, their weapons and armour are more of a problem. They're in a bad mood too."

>"Could a bunch of women drowning at once actually make a really big Rusalka?"
Doctor Ash cocks an eyebrow
"You mean The Rampart? I am convinced she is real, yes. I've not seen her myself but I've had patients who swear they have. Throughout the decades there have been so many stories from credible sources with no reason to lie. I believe I have heard her. I'd hate to think of what, if not her, made that noise."

>" The Everking is a lich who is considered to be mostly harmless as long as avoided, but there is a bounty for Splitrock who's wanted for a whole collection of crimes. Including of being a lich. What exactly is a lich and why such incongruity between the two examples given?"
The doctor leans on his desk again.
"What we know of lichdom is that no one comes through it completely sane. It's simply a matter of hoping that their derangement will be harmless. Whether it is or not, it's implications, the sheer POWER one person can wield in being a lich has to be monitored and sanctioned. Even out here."

He begins to pace.
"There are three liches in this world that have been cleared for lichdom.

Shihuanaba, the Spectre General. She was cleared in the last years of the war and only because her command over legions of the undead was peerless. Most thanomagus can control maybe 3 thralls at a time. Shihuanaba could control HUNDREDS. She was granted lichdom because her armies helped win the land war against the trolls.

Ederich Crowley. Pronounced like foully not holy. Ederich was...IS an unrivalled scholar. His research. His ability to take the unquantifiable measures from the winds of magic and put them in terms our scientists could use has revolutionised the Garlands. Hud powered mechanisms . Lich prisons. The aptgangr process. We owe it in part to his research. His work must continue. Just...far away from the rest of his colleagues. He was always a little odd and egotistical. being a lich made him ah...more eccentric."

John lowers his head.
"The Everking...people just agreed to live alone. His power may be too immense to be challenged. He's such an unknown element in this world. Unknown and untested. He just...is. If something that may or not be a god. Something which has walked this earth long before even the oldest person we have today. Do you throw the first punch. Maybe someone has. No one who still talks, though."

>"What do you think of the Old Guard?"
"I think their obsession with efficiency and the old ways is short sighted. If they had their way in this office, you would be in a robe - and have to choose a discipline. The elf would not be allowed to be a wizard. The goblins would both be dead, as would I if I weren't rendered down for potions. I certainly wouldn't be a doctor."

>"I may have to fight a troll. They don't bleed and magic barely works on them. Thoughts?"
"I think I don't envy your line of work. But let's see what got. Explosives. Fire. Here's the thing, though. Magic in it's purest form does only a quarter damage. A magical blast, fire spells, smite things like that. But physical damage enhanced by magic for instance, the fist technique or if you learned the 'Hells Heart' technique...that may fair better. If in doubt, shoot at it until it dies."

You flick out your KIES POINT MAP
>"What can you tell me about the Island north east from here. The one with the ruins and the mine."

"Ah. Lookout Island. A crucial point in our nautical war against the trolls back in the day. The map doesn't show it but its actually quite elevated. There are only three places around it someone can come to shore. These were made artificially"
Dr John places an overlay on your map and marks it with boats accordingly.
"This was before flying machines. So these three points alone were the only way to get on the island and could be heavily guarded and monitored accordingly.

The southwest and northeast corners of the island naturally grow rice and bamboo, and there are wild moa and diprotodons there also.

To the south, is the mine. A rich source of iron and gold back in the day. Pivotal to the war efforts. There were tunnels in the mine that led straight to the shanty town where the soldier and weapon forgers were stationed back in the day. It allowed the entrance of the mine to be heavily guarded and meant the raw materials could be taken straight to the camp without a boat. These days the mines are all but abandoned. Filled with Wakefields and Pajaks. maybe even dwarves. Depends who you ask."

Highball points to the campsite on the map
"So there were already buildings there. Between that and the defences it's no wonder the OG set up there."

Doctor Ash frowns
"Did they now? Well, that makes sense. The buildings there are a few centuries old but most of them would still be workable with a few repairs. Throw in a few tendts and it would be perfect base of operations."

"What's up with the temple."

The docotor does a small chuckle.
"Back in the day, people asked more of the gods than they do now. This was a temple to DELAG. The dragon god of hardship, judgement and ultimately, hard justice. They reasoned it would enhance their magic and protect them from rough seas and sneak attacks. Didn't pan out. It's in ruins, now but it's still a place people go to explore. Seeking treasure or answers. Some say it's part of a pilgrimmage. "

"And the tower is some sort of observation point, right?"

"Correct. That's why it too connects to the mine. With the mine in working order, someone could get from the tower to the campsite relatively quickly. After the war, it was converted into a lighthouse but no one lights it anymore."
>>
>>5521999
Well that's certainly useful information. If there's only three fortified landing points by sea, then it seems like an aerial infiltration might fair better than a sea-borne one. Hang-gliders by night could get Highball and Mike in, but it might bind Joey into having to assault the island in order to get them back out. Will have to ask Mike and Highball how comfortable they are with infiltration mission given new information.

"I don't suppose you have a map of the island, do you doctor? I'd be really grateful if you had an old plan from when the military still manned it or something."

"You mentioned a mine, by any chance do any of the tunnels run under any of the buildings on the island? If so are the close enough to the surface to hypothetically cause a collapse that would destroy the infrastructure above it?"

The doctor grabs another cigarette and lights it with a paper match.
"Oh absolutely. With a big enough explosion. The mine has surface access, most likely through some sort of unpowered lift system to the middle of the campsite. Should pop up in the middle of a storage shed, assuming it's still standing. It also connects to the base of the watchtower. No lift though. Just one very long ladder."

You think out loud.

Highball taps her ears

"It's not like I was working with Chesapeake or his clients much but I over heard a lot."

She jabs the map.

"That's the thing. I spied it on a flyover one time. They got 3 people stationed full time at the ruins. One in the tower, two at the top of the stairs."

She jabs the map enthusiastically
"But ain't nobody by the mine. No one wants to have to sleep next to it
or have their back to it to watch the shoreline. It'll be tough, but we could get access to the rest of island if that's how we swagger in."

Something occurs to you
>"What are Wakefields and Pajaks? I've been told that a pajak is a sort of spider person, but that there are different kinds and that they can be dangerous most of the time."

The doctor takes a long draw.
"The Pajaks in there are most definitely dangerous. Not as fast or as large as some we get here, but with large fangs, that can bite through armour and a truly vile venom. You've heard of the Huni Tamog'i?"

Karl does a slow nod.

"Right."

>"I like it. We'll probably need a light source."

Highball does a small proud laugh in her throat.
"Not if your scouting party is me, Karl and Mike, Doughy. We all got adaptable eyes. Almost like a cat."

Karl stares at his shoes
"Ah yeah. I am one of the scouts huh?"

Highball drapes an arm around him.
"Ah, don't flood your winklepickers about it. Big sis will get you through it. And Mike's as good as the day is long. He's a top rate trigger man."

Karl thinks a moment.
"Pretty sure I'm older than you."

Highball beams.
"I said big sis, not older sis. besides you can always use this if things get heavy."
Highball hands Karl his gun back. His eyes widen as he didn't even notice her take it but he doesn't seem mad. More sort of amused.

Confident the goblins aren't fighting, you turn back to the doctor and raise your hand.
"To my shame I'm not familiar. What is Huni Tamog'i?"

Doctor Ash places a hand on your shoulder. It's gentle but you can sense that's through training.
"Never be ashamed of not knowing something, Mr Donuts. There is only shame in claiming and recycling knowledge you know you don't have and continuing the cycle of misinformation. To admit you don't know something means you wish to learn something."

"The Huni Tarmog'i are a clan of pajak. Taller than most people but only by a little. The male is smaller but their venom is more potent. They are largely hairless, save for their heads, and even then less than others. Their bodies are dark, with shiny plates varying from black to dark blue or a plum like colour. Their fangs are enormous and very sharp. Enough to puncture leather or pajak silk."

He gestures to you and Jorn respectively.

"The venom is incredibly potent. Symptoms include copious production of spit, muscle spasms trouble breathing and then death. It takes on average 28 minutes from the bite to feel any symptoms but people have died in less than 15 minutes. A healing potion will delay the symptoms for maybe an hour, but ultimately you will need an antivenom or a healer."

The doctor puts his hands in his pockets and shrugs a little.
"For ternion species I mean. Goblins seem to regard it as more what you would think of as a bad hangover. Sufficient difference in physiology I suppose."
he pats Highball's head she does a small breeping purr.
"You survivors, you."

He thinks.
"Owing to the nests they build, I remember... what did the elves call them? Ah yes. Funnel Webs."

Pajaks are intelligent. They might not be happier about the OG so close to their hunting grounds than anyone else. Perhaps a deal could be made.

He taps the map gently at the crater near Scadam.
"That's most likely some sort of energy based disturbance. A deep crater of some sort. Could be caused by a lich awakening or something falling from the sky. Might just have been something muscle wizard related. Guess the person making the map had no idea either."

He glances at the island. He glances at you.
"Not sure. Besides the stairs it's entirely enclosed by the looks of things."
He puts a magnifying lens to his eye and looks closer.
"Yep. There's stairs but no doors. Could just be sloppy cartography. I wouldn't worry about it. Between the sea and sky patrols the GTU do there, I don't think we're meant to ask much."

>Also ask what would we have to do to be allowed to visit the factotum college.
"Well, and this is just for starters. Your ship would need to be registered - or appear to be- and then you'd have to agree to be boarded to make sure you're on the level. And while things are progressing in the cities - the big ones- pretty well."
Ash clenches his teeth and points to the goblins
"They are NOT gonna win you points with most factotums. If you are super lucky you'll get one of the properly curious sorts buuut.."

He wiggles his hand
"With the right negotiations, I am sure anything is possible."

>"Pajaks are intelligent. They might not be happier about the OG so close to their hunting grounds than anyone else. Perhaps a deal could be made."

Karl rolls his tongue in his mouth
"A pajak is intelligent. Pajaks are dumb, bellicose animals like the rest of us. Even if the Huni had some good brains among them, they are notoriously aggressive."

The doctor nods
"If it were...almost any other tribe negotiations would be on the table. But, I think when it comes to the Funnel Web's, your associate is correct. They attack *everything*. No matter the size."

>"I wish more of my professors had been like you, Doc."
Ash gets a warm smile.
"Give it time. We're getting there."

>"I like that plan, Highball. You think you all could make it back there after doing your thing, so we could meet back up when we drop off the chests?"
Highball puts her hands on her hips and does another 'heh-heeen' laugh.
"Eggs in the coffee, boss."

Do you also think you’d be able to hide a few chest so the OG wouldn’t find them. If the go off in the mine it could cause quite the disturbance, at best maybe destroy the watchtower and or rile up the local fauna into attacking.

>"Do you also think you’d be able to hide a few chest so the OG wouldn’t find them. If the go off in the mine it could cause quite the disturbance, at best maybe destroy the watchtower and or rile up the local fauna into attacking."

Highball does a cute stretch
"Well the crates only go off when opened. They'd probably go off if another explosion is close enough to them, but I don't know if that means we can rig them. We DO have over 20 sticks of dynamite though and might be able to buy more."

"How do we rig that, though?"

Highball thinks for a moment
"We bundle up the explosives in places throughout the cave. Some under the tower, some under the town. Then leave a biiig thick line of mogspit from the explosives to the mine entrance."

Karl tilts his head.
"When do we light it?"

"Two options. Either they set it off when they make the pick up on the mine shoreline, open a box and POW! That set's off the rest. That lights up the mogspit, the fire burns down into the mine and eventually blows up the dynamite."

"ANd option two?"

"They take the crates into their boat and head back to camp. Either they open the crate en route, and blow up one of their ships or they open the crates at the base and start panicking. Especially if we have also drained their fight water and put more explosive about the place. At which point, we via rowboat or even from the ship if we get a good enough shot, ignite the mogspit trails to give them even more grief."

Jorn who has been just been practising her shoot dancing all this time finally stops and says something.

"You oughtta pile up explosives under the tower and the mine entrance, and not sweat putting any under the camp. If the inside of the mine gets all fiery and smoky and the other two entrances get collapsed, all the funnel webs will run straight into the campsite. That way not matter when they open the crates, they will have their hands full, no?"

Highball giggles
"That would be pretty funny."

Jorn cracks open a can of strawberry milk and has a sip.
"Like, you rig the mine. We make the drop, pick you up. If we see an explosion by the mine, we just don't go back, we can assume all hell has broken loose. If we don't hear a kaboom when we oughtta, we pull in close and set off the mine explosions off ourselves. At some point, one of the rigged crates will either be knocked open and go off or someone will open one to see if it will help them."

"Either way, they're gonna have to pack up and cut their losses."
Karl's repressed grin suggests there's still a lot of goblin in the little guy.

You place a wad of bills it the kidney bowl which Doctor Ash picks up and pats his chest at the sight of, flattered.

"Goodness me. Glad to see the youth of today values information. Thank you"

You step back out of his office. You once again have run of the town.

Highball and Karl are speaking goblin to each other.
Jorn is practising making a coin roll along her knuckles but is really bad at it.

You reason, accurately, that they are most likely in the Waffle House day drinking and eating chilli. So you make your way over there. Bingo bango.

Mike ,Burstock and Richter grab some more chairs when you enter and Mike waves you down 2 beers, an iced tea and lime spider respectively. You all gather around.

You tell Mike the plan while Highball begins enthusiastically talking to Richter as Burstock listens in.

Mike nods thoughtfully. He has a serious look but doesn't he always? He finishes his beer and looks at you. His voice is low.

"We'll get it done Joonda. She wont get a scratch."

>"where can we buy a barrel of mogspit and a bulk order of dynamite?"

"The baron sells a fair bit of dynamite, and that ammo maker in scadam might be able to help us out in a day or so. For Mogspit, we should pay Ruine in Kiani forest a visit. He sells it in bulk. Can either bring the ship or me and one other person could take a bet-bet there."

Burstock raises her hand

Mike smirks.
"There we go."

You open your own beer and survey the table:

>c. You seem pretty cheerful these days.
"I've had a good run lately. Every one who betrayed me got scared - but not killed. I'm no longer working for a troll. I got to talk to my husband and get some closure there and can move on. I got my qualification. I'm drinking a lime flavoured ice cream soda. Things are pretty great."

Highball pats her chest
You need crowd control and coup de grace. The troll may not bleed, but his lackies do - and the more damage you take, the more I'll do - not saying you'll take any."

Mike drums his fingers
"Between my caltrops and my boss shells, I can probably soften him up AND his cronies. But I won't do as much damage unless you use hells heart on me."

Jorn beams
"You know hells heart? That STACKS with my own damage boosting. So long as I don't die first, I could really bust somebody up."

Burstock leans on her hand ,, smiling, one eye open at Jorn
"I'm a good option to have around on the not dying front."

Richter shrugs.
"I...would be glad to fight if you want me to. My ability to absorb any damage means if things go truly wrong, I will still be standing and be able to escape with your unconscious bodies."

"I guess there's no real bad options, Joe. It's whatever you think works."

>e. Anyone know where we can get a rowboat?
Jorn does a small clap
"Swindy has one! Swindy Varrickstreet! They were my neighbour at the hotel here! They have a rowboat and a rickshaw! They use skeletons to move it! It's how they get around!"

Burstock waves down another beer.
"That or I bet dowler will build us one for the right price. The guy in Dunnlivin."
Highball muses
"Heck, the baron might just have one. Dude never tells us his whole inventory. We have to guess what he might have."

>c. Where can we get even more explosives do you think?

Mike thinks
"Besides Kiani or Scadam? Hmmm. The big city or the factotums might sell us some. But we'd need clearance to even get close."
You slump a little -heard that before. Let's make more money before we blow 10 grand, maybe.

>a. Anyone up for a schvitz while we're in this town?

Highball hold her hand non-commitaly until Jorn raises her hand at which point, Highball raises hers. Richter is also on board.

"I got a spell! It's not a prudemagus spell, just a normal one. It makes somebody drop there weapon so it takes them a turn to pick it back up. Can't do it when I'm mad, though! I HAVE to hit stuff when I'm mad!"

As such, I got no issue doing a little dick work while I'm your passenger, and I'm more than happy to loan you use of my skvaders."

Karl runs a hand through his hair

"This next job though? Spooking around and planting jelly? Funnel web pajaks? I mean, I will do it - it's for a good cause. But that's a little outside my comfort zone. I'd like a little extra cabbage for that. If that mean's I'm in your service longer so be it. But I'd like a little extra up front."

"That is entirely reasonable. What rate would you usually charge for this sort of 'consultation' work?"

Karl sucks his teeth.
"Let's call it a flat 350. I'll buy my own jelly and that can be a deposit for the next 2 weeks of my services starting from the mission. I will stick around a little longer, you'll be able to learn things from me when you level up if you want and because you're providing me with an office - I will cut you in on 25% of any gold I earn from doing detective work while aboard your ship."

>"while it’s just us and if your comfortable telling, you keep bringing up this mysterious party who you work with but also seem to be constantly annoyed by. What’s up with that?"

Karl looks a little taken back.

"Have I been complaining that much? Thought I'd barely mentioned them. Truth is, if I kept bringing some other party up, it was likely one of two folks I know. One's a little bit like you. Ambitious and money minded but with a good heart and just a bit of ruthless streak. Trouble follows them like trouble was a cat and they have sardine in their socks."

Karl sighs and glances skyward
"The other one...? You know how you said you'd gotten uncomfortable with how comfortable you'd gotten picking fights?"

You and Karl step out from the steam room and collect your freshly cleaned clothes. You get dressed. Conversation will make this less awkward.

>"What is your assessment of Doctor Ash?"
"Smart. Smart and educated. The best sort of abercrombie. He's had to fight in the most literal sense of the word at least a couple of times. He's readier than he looks for trouble. So he's either been under surveillance, been abused or both. You can tell by his eyes and how much he moves. He's a good guy. Open minded and morally hardline."

Karl scuffs his shoes on.
"he absolutely know what the building on that island is, though. He's a very VERY good liar. But he was lying about that."

Karl buttons up his shirt and puts his tie in a basic knot.

"Take it from a goblin trying to be a hero in the big smoke. People fear what they don't understand. And for every one example that their fears are unfounded, they'll get 10 examples that justify their fear, at least in their mind. It's easier, I guess."

Karl snaps his suspenders and begins shrugging on in weskit and jacket.
"Every year it gets a little better, maybe. The orphange lets the blue kid mingle with the others, more are getting picked up by decent, even doting parents. It's a thing."

Karl shoots his cuffs.

Richter and Highball begin stacking and collecting the crates
"Devil burn me! These stores be full of empty boxes! What manner of trickery be this?"
Richter approves of Highball's pirate voice.

Jorn is inconsistent with talking in the third person, but she's trying it out.

"Its not one big hit of damage, it's 117 little ones. So if someone is wearing armour, like mine or yours, it does 0 damage. Even heavy cloth stops it. It's more good for dealing with dregs than real enemies."

Surrey actually thinks about this
"Hm. It's true I have admired his work. It might be fascinating. But perhaps we would be too similar in all the wrong ways for us meeting to be of any value."

GILCHREST spies Jorn and immediately starts making an excited chitinous chattering noise . He brings one of his hands up to his jaw to stop it.

"Right, the one we had a meeting about!"

Jorn walks up to Gilchrest with her hands behind her back she walks around him in a circle.

"You're some kind of...Grasshopper man! That is wild. I've never gotten super close to a nowl."

Jorn rests her head on Gilchrests sternum and taps on his chest, producing a knocking sound. Gilchrest's antennae briefly go straight.

Boddicker makes a few faces, or starts to.

Your party has reformed.

"He'll be hiding out in Kerdil forest. Planning his next move and licking his wounds. Next time you go there, you make sure you're ready. Smell you later."

She gives the rinkan a double kick and it takes off like almost nothing you've seen. Less than a metre off the ground but fast enough to whip up the grass where it took off.

Do we have grounds to say this? I remember couple occasions where Joey was pretty ruthless. Dissolving a guy in acid and blasting a group of Vatniks over threats. I remember when we had plans to do in Surrey until we figured what was going on with Chesapeakes potion business.

May I suggest instead something along the lines of:
"You cooked them good. Their leader seemed eager to say something. Unlikely what he would have said worth much, but you never know. Something to keep in mind in the future."

"This is hinky. These guys aren't stragglers or runaways. They're loyal to Edgewater. But...brutes? Nowls? He wouldn't deploy them just for the hemk of it."

You collect the loot and thumb a couple of regular rounds back into your big iron.

>"The previous group had a empty piece of parchment. We should take another look."

Jorn nods
"Yeah yeah! That's a whole thing. Best I can figure, trolls -especially solo ones make sure to never have all their goods in one place. Like- any time they have spare supplies, they hide it somewhere for a rainy day. And lets face it, it's bucketing on Edgewater these days."

Highballs ears perk up
"Buried treasure?"

"Booty!"
Jorn smacks her own behind for emphasis.

You look over your shoulder as the three of you walk back to the previous spot.
>"This guy had the same transmog as Boris, right. Edgewater must have had a whole batch. Do you think we might run into Corvid and Rhinocerotid variants?"

Jorn thinks into her fist
"Man, I HOPE not. The transmogs he had weren't up to code and for every person successfully transformed, there will be five the potion would just kill. That said, he's good at acquiring more staff. Let's hope that worst case scenario he has like one more spider, one more rhino. Yeah."

You come to a stop. The corpse with the paper is being picked over.

The two goblins initially hiss and draw their weapons but hesitate when they see HIghball.

One of them starts clicking and chittering at Highball, who responds flatly in the same language.

The cutpurse points to the corpse and clicks and makes small yawning sounds.

Highball nods.

Cutpurse makes a tutting noise and shakes their head and gestures at the corpse multiple times with one of its daggers. They sound irritated.

Highball gestures to you and speaks flatly. She gestures to Jorn and does the same. Highball says something that ends with a hiss but the cutpurse shrugs and twirls their knives before adding some more clicking.

Highball turns to you
"This is gonna go one of three ways, Joe. We can fight them, spook them or get some sort of trade happening. What do you think?"

Cutpurse angrily purses her lips and throws a nearby rock at Walletstab, who dodges and blows a raspberry at Cutpurse. Walletatsb repeats her question.

Highball whispers into Jorns ear. Jorn nods but looks puzzled. Highball asks Walletstab something.

Walletstab holds up five fingers. Highball emphatically holds up three. Walletstab agrees. Cutpurse throws another rock at Walletatab, absolutely livid with them. Walletstab dodges and sings a little taunt at them.

Cutpurse sighs and clicks at Highball. She rubs her fingers together.

Jorns brows lower ever so slightly.
"yeah yeah. Not here though."

Jorn turns to you

Highball wiggles her fingers like Bonesaw McGraw

"Call it stereotyping but honestly there ARE pretty much two things you can always count on a goblin to want. These two were basically the embodiment of that."

As if on cue, Walletstab sprint past you, looking to catch up with their partner.

Jorn returns nodding to herself, thoughtfully. She looks down at the corpse.

"Edgewater talked about it like it was the most normal thing in the world. I guess when your species doesn't really bleed out and can really take a hiding, you make it your business to have back up supplies of weapons, cash and other loot so that even if you get rinsed you can dig up a cache and start over."

"That is really planning ahead."

Jorn grits her teeth.
"Trolls are often smarter than they sound, or at least old enough to have the benefit of experience. SUpposedly there's troll treasure buried all around the garlands from back when they were making their big push over two centuries back, if you can believe that."

Highball wipes away slight salivation
"Where would we find that?"

"You get lucky, I suppose. Or maybe you find one of their ancient maps and begin your adventure. As is often the case. Scuttlebutt is that during the war, the trolls were even burying ancient dragon tech they were finding."

You arrive at your destination.

The digging situation is not ideal, but you make it work.

Jorn alternates between digging with her hands and wetting the earth, which makes it easier for you to lever up in clods with your crowbar.

Highball cuts and scoops with a couple of large cleaver-like blades she has.

Every time your tools get too messy and gummed up, Jorn waves her hand, summoning ethereal bubbles around them and cleaning them back to a mirror sheen.

You finally hit paydirt! A large metal case, latched but not locked is waiting for you. Highball drags it to the surface. Nice one! Some treasure!

You hear the beating of huge leathery wings and a massive shadow falls over your party. A second shadow follows afterwards, accompanied by a piercing cry.

"COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EE!"

Jorn looks up
"How did a mogwomp get up there?"

Highball dusts off the chest, smiling.

You decide to head back to town. They wouldn't have hidden this box and then go looking for it if it was explosive or junk or something. Half of your journey is uneventful but as the edge of the town just barely comes into view, a creature emerges from a cluster of trees.

It does not attack.

It stares at you for a moment before slowly taking a mouthful of grass.

Jorns eyes flash green, but she covers it with a sneeze.

You step up the moose. It just stands still, still chewing.

>"Why the long face?"
You're no expert on moose physiology. You are not sure how expressions register on their face, or even really their range of emotions, expressed in conventional animal threat displays or signs of passivity. Is this moose extra grumpy looking or do all moose look like this? You're not sure. With all this in mind you can't shake the feeling that this particular moose just got grumpier looking upon hearing you say that.

>"Keeping an eye on this place? Atta moose."
The moose honks lowly. I might have just been shaking flies off its nose, but it sort of looks like its nodding?

>"Hey, what's in the bag?"
Th moose lets shimmies its body, As it wiggles you can see that the bag is connected to a small , basic, saddle. The moose extends its neck and taps the bag. They shimmy the bag further back down its body. That was honestly pretty weird. It has a saddle, though. Makes the bag less weird.

>"I feel like you're not usually a moose?"
The moose grunts. Its ears flick.

>" I know there is a place for everyone..."
The moose looks over your shoulder then back at you. It exposes it's teeth. It makes a throaty, repetitive sound. It shimmies the flies off its face.

"Deception is the butter and eggs of this business sometimes. Don't you worry about it. I mean, you think I told those two cutpurses that I worked for YOU? No. They got it backwards."

You open the chest, people stand up to look at the loot.
Let's see

300 gold
A large box of shotgun shells
6 40 ounce beer bottles
2 boomflasks
A 5 kilo bag of good rice
A bottle of Iron Brew
10 sticks of...

Burstock tilts her head.
"Dynamite?"

Mike sniffs the loot.
"TNT. Nothing like as sensitive."

"They're not the same thing?"

Mike shakes his head

Lastly, wrapped in cloth you receive another FIST SIZED SAPPHIRE
This one is also huge, dodecacontagonical and heavy.

Looking closer, you see it has ribbons of what looks like gold twisting within it. It doesn't seem to be filled with liquid. It's solid, and yet GOLD, in ribbons and flakes slowly ocellate within the gem.

Jorn does a small wince.
"Why does it ring like that?"

Mike and Highball look at each other and shrug.

"Just me?"

Burstock nods but gives Jorn sort of a long look
"Yeeeeah. I think it might be."

Giving my cents on divvying up loot:
Rice goes to Jones' pantry I think.
I guess the beer goes to the on-ship icebox, unless the proprietor of this wafflehouse is alright with people bringing in their own drinks.
Shells gotta go to Mike, he's the only one with a shotgun.
Iron Brew... Joey might have a use for that someday. Backpack, hopefully Joey never drinks it.
Gem goes into the backpack, with the other gem we've got. Maybe they'll be worth more as a set.
The two boomflasks, backpack for now. If we still have them in a couple days, then that's two less we need to buy to boobytrap the crates.
300 gold goes to the wallet.

TNT, now that's exciting. I almost want to get it to Surrey's lab and melt it up with some other products, but that might be greedy.
If I remember my chemistry correctly, a 50/50 mix with Ammonia Nitrate is useful for bulking up small amounts of TNT, and a 10-20% mix of aluminum powder can up the power a good bit.
Even without adulterating it, bundling it with a stick of dynamite as a detonator could make quite a bomb.

"Think so? Thanks. I had to get used to improve and playing parts once I realised I had fucked up so bad in rolling with Edgewater. If it doubt I just but on my game face."

Jorn simply lowers her eyebrows and stops smiling. Hardly a game face compared to how she looked in battle but apparently it did the job?

>"You never seem low on mana. DO you even carry potions?"
"Oh, totally sure! I carry one for emergencies. Hate the taste, though."

>"Do you recognize this? "[show blue vial]
Jorn hold the vial at eye level.
"Looks like blue apple syrup."
She remove the stopper and sniffs it, immediately recoils and puts the stopper back on.
"UUGH! Not blue apple syrup. Smells like lavender."

>"Can you hear whistling from anything else?"
Jorn puts her fists to her temples and leans forward.
"I KNOW I've heard that sound before. I know it. In a city, maybe? A big city. Not when I was in Joonda. What was it? It's not even quite a whistling. It's like...you know when the pressure in a room changes or you go up or down to fast or someone punches you on the ear. No?"

Jorn leans towards you and away from you.

"Doesn't ring either."

You wonder out loud
>"Did we find a lich's phylactery? Is that what the gem is and why it's effecting Jorn?"

Burstock muses
"A lich's phylactery, does have to be something valuable. Soul won't go into it otherwise. But why would Edgewater have that."

Burstock grabs Jorn's ears, who meeps.
"Nothing *seems* wrong with her ears, either."

"Ahhh. Probably not? You're very clearly a grel and you're very clearly NOT wearing a wizards robe. I don't think they let their own operatives do that. You might have convinced them you were a sympathiser, though. That works. Moose is gonna know even less about what's happening than those two eagles from earlier."

>>5545677
>"What was that Mogwomp call you did when you approached the town?"
Mike does a small smile
"Sounded pretty close right? It's a little mimicry I picked up when I was spending time with them. They have two main calls - famous ones at least. There's the one they use for each other where they go 'kulukukukukuku' and theres the one one they do for strangers in their territory. If they know someone is there, they call 'cooooEE!' and if whoever is there doesn't respond in kind, they assume that person is sneaky.'

Mike takes a swig of beer and smacks his lips
"Now, me and other trackers like me have also picked up the call as a way off signalling to others that they are not alone in the forest, or that we know someone else is there. It's handy for making sure no one accidently shoots each other. My vocalisation just happens to sound exactly like a Mogwomp 'cause Orks are just kinda like that."

Burstock smiles
"It's true. Any time you see a raconteur in the cities, giving people news or telling stories, with sound effects and voices is an ork, huh?"

Mike nods.

Highball leans in
"Hey hey! Can you do any others?"

Mike holds up his hands
"I mean I haven't really practiced much but.."
Mike puts a finger to his throat and produces a guttural, hissing roar. You instinctively do a micro flinch.

Burstock does a palms only clap
"Kaprosuchus!"

Mike scratches the back of his head
"I've encountered them a lot. They're not scared of the noise they make, turns out."

>"Found the chest, got some information, hashed a few things out. She did kill a guy who was giving up, but I should have made it clear that's not kosher before going grinding with her."

Burstock nods lazily while resting on her hand still
"Sounds proper. And don't sweat not telling every new employee every little thing. I think all of us - except Mike?- have slipped up at least a very little bit when we first started."
She pats Mike's arm.

Karl looks over from his table
"Wait, what'd I do wrong?"

Burstock calls back
"You eavesdrop all the time."

"It's an occupational hazard!"

There is some good natured laughter

>"Is the Everking still in Kiani forest?"
Burstock sips a clear liquid and nods, knowingly.
"Think he likes you better than me, that follows."

Mike loads his pipe.
"Wait, is that what you were looking at?"

Burstock nods again.

>"Did you run into any OG in the forest?"
"It's possible. There was a rinkan in there by itself. Not parked, but just walking around. We tried to follow it but MAN those things are fast."

>"You seem to know a little about liches. Tell me more."
Burstock stops leaning on the table and does a small sway to herself.
"Let's. See. What I. Got. Well, they're all a little crazy - some completely lose their minds when they become a lich - like there's nothing left of what they were. Lich ascension can be seen for miles when it happens. Tends to be a little explosive. Might even leave a crater if it goes wrong. To stop a lich you gotta bust it's phylactery or - failing that- cut them apart and keep them apart."

Burstock takes another sip
The phylactery cant just be s single grain of sand or a random rock or chicken bone. The soul is snobby about its new home I guess, so it has to be something fancy, possibly unique. I think I already said that. Once a lich has ascended, they have 3 basic forms. One is basically identical to how they looked in life. You wouldn't know unless you're a vitamgus or a thanomagus. One is a little desiccated, like a mummy or thrall it has muscle and fat but it's still clearly dead. The other is pure animated bones."

Highball gazes skyward
"So, is the baron in his mummy form or...?"

"I think that's actually his human form. He's just kinda like that."

Jorn goes moon eyed
"The baron's a lich?"

Burstock regards her with amused patience and blinks a few times.
"yes."

Burstock continues
"Healing magic won't kill them like people think, but it can really mess them up. They have all the spells a thanomagus has, plus up to 8 more. Almost always offensive ones."

Jorn frowns
"When you perfect a discipline your body only has the capacity for 5 sphere spells."

"I wanna say at that point that's not the biggest rule they're breaking"
Burstock noisily finishes her drink.

Burstock rubs her eyes like she was just woken up grumpy.

Burstock sways
"I remember...I remember he was rude to Zhenji and that made me kinda pissed because I was low on money and hoping to shack up with them without paying for it, which, for what it's worth is absolutely an option if they're in a good mood - but this customer was rude to them somehow so Zhenji was in a bad mood the rest of the night. I was foggy, but didn't wanna sober up cause I couldn't afford more booze."

Burstock recreates the pissed wince she had at the time.
"So I'm just stink eyeing this guy the whole time. Like, trying to wish misfortune on him with my brain or something. Just as he's leaving, he drinks a vial of that stuff. It is absolutely the same stuff. I am sure of it."

Burstock shrugs
"It was something for his mission. And I am conVINced he was Old Guard."

Burstock nods thoughtfully.
"Fighting a lich, unless you have a small army, is unlikely to be quick. It's a test of all your tricks and stamina. The important thing is to put them down as best you can. The more pieces the better. Even if it takes all night."

Another glass of gin is brought to her.
"Some ghosts, somehow manage to hang on to who they are - or were, rather. I'd say there's probably a higher percentage of safe liches than safe draugr, but I don't really know everything about it. A lot of draugr start off as they were in life, knowing everything they knew but, over decades or centuries...they turn out like the others eventually."

Burstock squeezes Jorns hand.

>"Wait, Burstock have you fought a lich?"
Burstock appreciates the gin and smacks her lips.
"I have *assisted* in the dispatch of a couple of liches, yes. As to whether I fought it, well...I think perhaps they couldn't have done it without me."

Burstock seems to heal herself, she looks up, suddenly very focussed.
"I need to speak as objectively as possible, in case there's a misunderstanding. I assisted a lone warrior in fighting a lich or two. That doesn't mean I alone can help any one of you do the same. I mean not an ounce of disrespect when I say it was more them than me. And none of us are like them. Not even close."

Burstock glances down, sober.
"I know none of you are so foolish, but I also know it's not impossible to get an idea in your head because you heard someone else do a thing. There are...different calibres of adventurer out there and that's just how it is."

Burstock puffs her cheeks.
"Well, if we're lucky, one of them runs to some place miles away, like you see in pop culture. Some craggy field or canyon with no one in it so they can tussle. If not, whole cities can get flattend and we all lose. Lich beefs never last forever though.."

Burstock does a dangerous stretch
"The info I gave you earlier is based on the assumption that the lich transformation worked correctly. A lot of deathwizards, well, not a LOT but more than there should be, try to go lich the second they get their papers. Cooks off most of their magic and leaves them in mummy form. Now, some are fine with that. Go on to lead good lives, for some it just makes them mad. Those ones, known as a demilich are a little easier to take. And spot, obviously."

>"Could you tell me more about the adventurer in question?"
Burstock lowers her head and gets a fond smile
"I don't to make it sound like I'm not impressed as hell with all of you, or that I'm caught up in years past but.. well, there is nobody else like them. That purity and absolute passion for lethal combat. At first I thought they were just really dumb, but that wasn't it either. I never saw them so much as step back. They didn't brag but they also didn't undersell what they were - are. The first time we fought a lich, it had barely begun a speech before she just charged into it. Any weapon she held was an extension of her body. She was absolutely certain and absolutely irrepressible."

Burstock sips her drink

"But through it all she was really gentle. Never greedy, and never cruel. Far too silly and always ready with a warm smile and cold drink. One of the God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too wild to live, and too rare to die."

Burstock links her fingers together.

"He's no brewer but he makes it his business to have every slippery finger and toe in every dirty, illegal or otherwise dangerous pie in any circle he's in. If so much as a bee's sneeze worth of this stuff has been near him in the last month - he'll be able to tell us what it is."

>"I'll ask Surrey first. If she can't figure it out I'll ask you to send it to your guy."

Karl hands the vial back to you
"That's fine too."

Karl taps out a cigarette.

You add another thought
>"Based on what Burstock said this stuff is standard issue for the OG scouts. I has to have some function deemed important for their agents."
"If any of those guys have come near him and made themselves obvious, grapefruits to gold coins they're in an Atonak overcoat and the bottom of the ocean by now. He'll have rolled them first, though."

You notice his food choices
>"Do you not got a sweet tooth?"
Karl lights a match on his shoe and cups his hands around his tab.
"Not especially. I can bring myself to use utensils for the sake of blending in, but I still prefer to eat with my hands or chopsticks. Waffles aren't great for that."

Thinking back, Highball drank her chilli from the bowl like she was finishing milk at the bottom of a cereal bowl. You must be getting used to it.

>"Do you know anything about Boddicker? She keeps popping up."
Karl bogarts his smoke
"Does she now?"
Karl flicks open his notepad
"Oddette Boddicker. Two Ds, Two Ts, Two Ds. Elf. 26 Years old. 173 centimetres plus change. Born in the village on Monterjee on the central band"

Karl lowers his notepad briefly
"'Ence the acCENT."
He raises it again.

"Lieutenant Avant-Courier with the Vanguards. Effectively in charge of the Barcardi Outpost. Carries a kick axe and a five shooter. Good with both. A quick draw and a bit of a gun juggler. Expert rider on her rinkan, which is named 'bob' I guess."

Karl finally taps off the half inch of ash
"Long list of filed complaint, including roughage, missing items and 'enhanced interrogation', but an even longer list of successful busts and arrest, general keeping of the peace and public safety - which- is quite impressive in these parts. Fond of high end whisky and actually likes grink. Not currently seeing anyone, but has a small fan club in her outpost."

Karl flicks the notepad closed.
"I wasn't around long before it was in my interest to know what she was about."

>"What do you think her angle is? She showed up to tell Edgewater is in Kerdil before taking off again."

"Acute. But in all seriousness. Edgewater has been a big problem in this area for a not insignificant amount of time. Doubtless she's done the tactical projections and grim mathematics of taking on a troll and his personal army with Just the Vanguards."

Karl does a small grin, smoke comes through his teeth as he gestures.
"Now, obviously a troll taking over one town, poaching livestock, stockpiling potions and generally making life miserable is a big enough problem that other people will get involved. She could alert bastion Nishi, who, though a training facility has a bunch of trained soldiers at the ready at all times. I dare say the factotum academy would send over some fire power if they got wind of it."

Karl takes another puff, he gets a knowing look off to the side.
"Buuut then, likely as not, then they'd send Boddicker away for any attack on Edgewater - she's a scout - her job is done. That wouldn't work for her. She's a desperado, a young gun. She has this whole image. Most vanguards don't wear spurs."

Karl taps out some more ash, and lets his tab rest on the ashtray.
"Enter you. YOU can help her with Edgewater and his goons. You'll both be needed to beat him, most likely, but as far as her report goes, and the scuttlebutt that most people listen to goes. Big cities, raconteurs, that sort of thing. It'll be Boddicker that people talk about. She's official. Known. And unlike you, completely okay with people spreading her name around."

Karl picks it back up
"Try not to think about it too much. No harm in the local law being in your debt - even if they're unlikely to ever admit it."

>"Is she the type to honor debts? She seemed to think the ground should be grateful for her walking on it."

"She's got tickets on herself, that's for sure. But there's an important factor here and - I'm no doctorand I've never spoken to this person, so what I say is based on my experience with similar people and my observations."

Karl leaves some gold on the table

"Whatever her behaviour and her methods, I feel like Oddette Boddicker is actual some sort of romantic, big dreams and image concious. She justifies her actions and ultimately sees herself as a hero. A tough bastion of law who needs to ride the line in this tough world. She's convinced she has a code, so she does."

He buttons up his jacket
"I can't promise you working with her is gonna work more in your favour than hers. Frankly, I doubt it. But she won't stab you in the back, she won't align herself with Edgewater and she won't, at least unprovoked hurt you or anyone you care about. Not just because she thinks she's the hero of this piece but because she know's - at least on some level- what you can do. It's another reason she picked you."

Karl stands up and put his hands in his pockets.
"Just a thought."

Burstock sneezes.

Karl takes his leave from the waffle house.

You decide to travel in a pack, since this isn't a combat situation. You walk first to the Bounty Bar to collect a copy of your own victory poster. It is a remarkable likeness. Mogwomps can really draw, who knew?

Whilst walking you show the blue vial to Highball and aske her if she recognizes it.
Highball purses her lips.
"Aaaah..sorry Joey this isn't ringin' anything. Even though Chesapeake was making stuff for the OG, I don't think they hit us up for any of this."

You all go to Doctor Ash's office, he is glad to see you again. You present him with both sapphires. he turns over the one full of spinning gold in his enormous hand. 'Fist sized' is relative.

"This, I know very little about. This is based on an ancient premise, but it's emergence in our lives is very new. Last five years or so. I don't know what role it plays, but it's definitely some sort of power source."

Jorn perks up
"Is that why it rings?"

John pauses and eyeballs Jorn. He holds the sapphire to his own ear and listens. He throws the sapphire underarm back to you and regards Jorn with his hands in his pockets.

"Jorn. If I take 867 times it by 368941 then take the result of that and minus it by 45687232 then take the answer to that and minus it by 274184614, then take the answer to that and times it by 3..what do I get?"

Jorn does a tiny shrug
"Three?"

"What do you think the largest room in the world is?"

"Well the room for improvement of course."

"How do you take your eggs, Jorn?"

"Oh, they gotta be mixed into something. I like the taste just fine. But the texture grosses me out."

"Would you say you have any vocal tics?"

"There are little phrases I feel like would be cool to say now and then, but then I end up saying them way more often than I intended with out reliasing it, if you can believe that."

Doctor Ash nods
"Hm. Well, the good news is the ringing is nothing sinister. It's unique to you and those like you. It's more common in elves, but we've seen it in all sorts of species. It's nothing to worry about. It's just who you are."

Doctor Ash does a small smile
"And that's great."

Doctor Ash smiles and hands the sapphires back.

"I believe so, yes. Very much like an electrical battery, but without need of mogspit, acid or coal to start it. And much, much smaller. A self contained source of incredible energy."

Ash puts his hands in his pockets
"There might be things around us, in this village or on your ship that are already using these, but who knows? It's probably more of a big city thing and emergent technology is overseen and discovered by the factotums. They devote their lives to it, in a way."

Lich phylacteries came up in a discussion and how they need to be somewhat valuable or unique for a soul to accept them. Does a phylactery have any outward sign of it's true nature? We originally floated the possibility that the sapphire could have been one before you identified it for us.

I suppose we can show the good doctor the vial and ask his opinion.

Doctor Ash fold hisarms and leans on his desk.
"I don't know if it's true or not, but I believe Vitamagi can feel the residual life force coming off them."

Burstock blinks
"Oh! Yeah, that's true."

Mike turns to Burstock, quizzically. She shrugs.

Ash's face contorts into a disgusted scowl his voice loses all it usual warmth. He glowers at the tube.

"No. But I can tell you - it took a troll or more likely a blooch to make it."

Hopefully next time we visit we have better news to report. Like OG getting stomped out of the region.

>"That's all, thanks doc."
"Don't sweat it, it's on the house."

At long last you go back to the ship. Burstock unsubtly 'after you's' everyone when it comes to the rope ladder.

Richter is waiting for your party at the top of the ladder, before you can so much as say hi, she gestures up and turns to Jorn.

"Do you suppose we could...?"

Jorn nods and the two of them practically sprint away up the stairs.

====Your party has disbanded====

You hand your poster to Gilcrest and ask if he can get together a frame for it, he says he totally can. He has had a very easy day.

You go up to Surrey's lab. Burstock follows you to water the plants. Everyone else is elsewhere.

You hand the vial to surrey
>"Any idea what this is?"

Surrey lowers her goggle and flicks down multiple focusing lenses on the vial.
She raises her goggle back up.

"I have the faintest idea. But with your permission, I'd like to make sure."

It is close to dinner and bed. The rest of the evening is your for free time. All you definitely have to do is tell Lumsden where the Silver Lining is going next.

Tough choice.
I sort of want to go to Crags for new location and tough enemies, but we also need to gear up in the other locations as well.

I guess there is nothing stopping us from visiting all the locations since we do have about a week before the drop off. For now I'll vote for:
>c. We need ship mods, dynamite and a boat. Sell some junk loot. Back to Dunnlivin.

We'll get some of the mission critical stuff and stock up with potions and other gear as well in preparation to finish off the OG. It'll also be useful if we decide to do more grinding at the Crags.

QM: You had 6 days until the drop, you now have 5. I believe.

====

You go about your evening. You ask Surrey if she can spare any potions, and she has finished distilling one (1) MANA POTION, which you take.

You hear thunder outside.

You drop off the GOOD RICE with Jones and grab a grilled cheese.

You let Lumsden know that in the morning, you are meant for Dunnlivin. She gives you a thumbs and assures you we will be there by late morning.

There is another peel of thunder and then another. Lumsden finds this weird both for the lack of stormclouds, and that she hasn't seen any lightning.

You do some maintenance on your evolver, which is both satisfying and relaxing. The big iron is smooth as you are. Nice.

Curiosity gets the better of you and you search the ship for Jorn and Richter. The higher in the ship you go the more you are sure you can hear something. Like thunder and the occasional elk like scream.

You take the stepladder up to the deck of the ship.

Richter stands over Jorn. Her whole body heaving and glistening in the moonlight. She checks her pulse and tries to slow her exhalation.

Richter notices you and gives you a weary but elated smile.
"Not for years...not since my training...has an unarmed opponent given me such trouble!"

Jorn stirs. Her eyes stay closed.
"Man, really?"

Richter startles add Jorn being conscious but recovers her usual slow smile.
"I assure you. While the conclusion was never in doubt, that was some of the most fun I have had in a long time. What joy. What pure, unbridled combat."

Richter easily helps Jorn to her feet, she continues to lean on Richter.
"Heh. Awesome"

Richter stand Jorn up straight and smooths her outfit.
"I feel. Strongly feel. That if we are to train together, we may both learn much and reach new heights."

Jorn finds her footing and smiles dreamily.
"Yeeeah. Sounds great."

Jorn yawns.

Jorn weakly waves her hand
"Ah don't bother, honch. You're running outta room on this ship as is."

Richter puts an arm around her waist.
"Indeed. I believe that from this point on Jorn and myself will simply wait until we have no other obligations when we have touched down at a location, and, should the opportunity present itself we shall spar once more."

Jorn laughs
"And you will win"

Richter closes her eyes serenely
"That is unquestionable. But it will be glorious and we will both learn so much. Now that we have gotten this first bout out of our system, I feel we can exercise restraint until the next opportunity present itself."

Jorn nods
"If we're skyside for too many days in a row it could be tricky."

Richter jostles her and gets her walking.
"Patience is a virtue. I will tell you of my time in the Iron Steppes of Drammadan over a refreshing libation. Come."

You see them safely to the lounge but something occurs to you.

You head back to the lab. Surrey is sipping a coffee even though it's now 9:50 at night.

>"Surrey. Mind sharing your faintest idea?"

Surrey clasps her hands on her desk.
"Mr Donuts. It is my belief...wait..do you understand, on some fundamental level the energy that is within living beings? Not magical energy, but the electrical impulses. The heat we generate. Caloric expenditure. The organic dynamos that reside within each of us. The compiled energy of a living ternion creature."

You nod, sure.

"What if - in an instant - all of that energy that powers any ork, elf, human or grel could be released. Discharged. All at once?"

It's odd to hear Surrey talk like this. This is not her usual wear tone or even the odd, clinical enthusiasm she demonstrates at new endeavours in her own work. There is genuine disdain here. Even a little fear.

Surrey taps her foot noisily. A two beat rhythm.

*thump-thump thump-thump thump-thump*

She shakes her head.
"At least temporarily, this substance, when consumed will cause a ternion who consumes it to be a walking, breathing energy factory. Not outwardly visible, but within them will churn the capacity for a single, terrible release of energy."

*thump-thump thump-thump thump-thump*
"It might last a day, It might last an hour but until it wears off it can be triggered by something or, I believe...the absence of something"

The beat stops.
Surrey parts her hands dramatically.
"Boom."

So it turns people into a living bomb. It's not magic, so most mages won't be able to see it coming. "Concise summary, Mr Donut's. Yes. I am not even sure it would register with a vitamagus as anything more than indigestion, if at all and yes...I think the very best case scenario would leave maybe a charred skeleton. More likely, smouldering chunks."

Surrey's smile fades.

Doctor in town said it was likely made out of a Blooch or a troll. Piece of shit we palmed this off of didn't seem special. So if they have enough of this to just pass around... we should look into if any areas are having high rates of Blooch disappearances. We can't allow something like this to keep existing, especially not in quantity, and double especially if you need to grind a motherfucker up to make it. What if someone slipped some into a flask, and then just got onto public transport. This is a nesting doll of atrocities.

>>5550649
We'll have to let others know, that anyone any OG we face could blow in our face if they have had ahead warning to take the stuff.

So every single one of these fuckers is a potential suicide bomber. Awesome.
>>
>>5551028
the good news is, I suspect this is meant to be an emergency thing. like I don't think they are sipping the bone exploding juice for funsies, I can't imagine they have the supply for that. I imagine this is more like. their version of a cyanide capsule, with not only a guarantee to silence the agent, but a damn good chance to fry whoever is trying to capture them. Which would then likely help make their activities even more secret; not only do you plug the gap in an agent poor enough to be caught, but whoever knew to look out for them. It is still a problem. I feel like the real lesson here is if we someone reach for a potion we need to punch them in the throat as hard as possible.
>>
>>5551193

The only practical difference a dead man's switch and a suicide bomb is the blast radius, which we've yet to see. Still, it's better we didn't have to learn about this the hard way.

The lack of logic seems inherent to magic. Maybe that's why Liches and other such magically-animated types go a bit nuts.

But yeah, a potion that can trigger spontaneous combustion is troubling. Not good for much except making a particularly gruesome point about how you see yourself as expendable.

"It is an ongoing mixture of bad and less bad news. Some is almost good. This potion is likely made from a trolls melanin and bone marrow. A single troll or even a single blooch could produce a medium sized amount. Still terrible, but it means we don't have to worry about some sort of actual culling taking place. Surrey clasps her hands

The wizards and two soldiers you dispatched in Kerdil forest, as well as the scout disguised as a wild boar in Dunlivin were both not equipped with this chemical. It is perhaps for more informed operatives or simply an option provided to those particularly passionate about the cause who wish to either cover their tracks or maim their enemies in the even of defeat. I do not think you need to worry about every member of the olg guard you fight exploding. At least I hope not."

She sips her coffee.
"Most importantly, a substance like this is what we in the industry call a 'presh'. It's short for 'precious', a slightly humorous name given to any substance that loses it's potency once added to something else. Transmogrification potions, even the intentionally faulty ones are the same. You slip this into someone drink? It becomes inert. It is nothing more than a thick, bitter liquid. Also, it is my belief that same as transmogrification potions, health potions, mana potions and alike, it cannot be injected."

Surrey puts down the empty cup
"Certainly its not beyond the realms of possibility to force feed either potion to someone in its pure form but, well. Leave us say it would be inefficient. Especially in the case of this one."

Surrey tilts the tube and sure enough it has the thickness of slightly old honey.

Surrey gets up from her desk. She gives you the slightest pat on the shoulder.
"Try not to worry too much. You're young."

Hey Centerfield. Anon who asked for the Karl picture here, you asked to hear how things went with his exploits and I'm not sure where else to contact you how session one went so, the adventures of NotKarl:
For clarity our GM didn't tell us exactly what we were playing just that our character would be answering a help wanted ad for a retrival mission. It wasn't until one of us asked what plane we were being sent to that the GM revealed we were about to start a Curse of Strhad game. In game NotKarl was the only one who made the knowledge check to recognise the name Barovia and wasn't quite fast enough to make it out of the room before the surprise planeshift hit. Once we found ourselves in Strhad's castle NK quickly discovered that of his new companions all but one were some combination of impulsive/reckless/dickish and proceeded to quickly pair up with the only other party member who seemed to understand just how deep a shitpile we were all in. Long story short only one person ended up getting bitten by Strhad (Warlock tried to flirt + charm spell him) and we somehow managed to bumble our way into escaping the castle when Strhad was nice enough to give us a head start for the lols. Highlights of the game character included having everyone else pretty entertained by the fact that I was dropping Noir slang with most sentences and somehow being one of if not the only person to regularly succeed on knowledge checks.
I'll keep updating you as sessions occur if you like or let me know if you don't want the threads cluttered up.

QM: I don't mind dropping contacts at the end of the thread if that's a things that's okay to do. I dunno what S.O.P is these days.

Thank Surrey for her work and kind words. Head down to the lounge to join others, but first ask what's the joke about a man falling out of a airship?

You thank Surrey as she leaves for bed, but as you're in the hallways, something occurs to you.

>"what's the joke about a man falling out of a airship?"

Surrey loosens her tie and does a small laugh.
"I'm not much for jokes but it's something like:

'A man fell out of an airship.'
"Oh, that's bad"
'No, that's good he had a parachute.'
"Oh! That's good!"
'No, that's bad, it didn't work.'
"Oh, That's bad."
'No, that's good. He landed on a haystack.'
"Oh, that's good!"
'No, that's bad. The haystack had a fork in it.'
"Oh, that's bad!"
'No, that's good. He missed the fork.'
"Oh, that's good!"
'No, that's bad...he missed the haystack.'

Surrey shrugs.
"Like I said."

Surrey rubs her eyes and goes to her bedroom.

You mosey on to the lounge. Jorn is mixing some sort of drink and has two glasses laid out. She is listening, somewhat enraptured as Richter tells her a tale of patience and discipline.
>>
>>5552867
Wait for Richter to finish and then ask Jorn what drinks she is mixing? Could be useful to know when ever we might be pouring the drinks.

Richter manages to make a story about arm wrestling some dude named 'Gears' sound pretty exciting. Jorn looks as though she's listening. You stand in the door way so as not to interrupt.

When Richter's story comes to a close, you approach the bar.

>"What drinks are you mixing?"

Jorn holds aloft a hand cranked drink blender that she is turning with formidable speed.

"Oh this is just some apricot delight. Vanilla yoghurt, a dash of cream, apricot nectar and some nutmeg for good measure. Nothing wild."

Richter places some ice cubes in the glasses.
"Simple is good. It sounds fantastic."

"I've still got energy to burn off but I don't wanna wake anyone. What did you want to do? Should we do the electric slide or start putting each other in boston crabs?"

"The electric slide sounds wonderful, though I'm not sure what it is."

"Ah, you'll love it, toots, trust me."

>a. Jorn, didn't you wanna image train with Richter. Help jog your memory?

>"Most people are gonna be prepping for our sabotage on the old guard this week, so if you two can work as a team, that'll be good. You might be my go-to."

Jorn turns to Richter with silent but agape excitement. Richter smiles and pats her hand atop of Jorns to calm her.

"I am sure in Dunlivin we will encounter no real adversaries, but we are of course here should you need us."

Jorn nods. She glances at Richter, takes note of her calm expression and tries to mimic it.

>"Richter, a lot happened today you should know about..."

"Talk to me.."

You bring Richter entirely up to speed. Lich info. Moose encounters. What the sapphires are. Kaboom potion. She nods, smiles and thoughtfully blinks through it all.

"I see. Thank you for letting me know. Perhaps it is fortuitous we both have attacks that can knock people back."

"Yeah. I don't think we have to worry about every little bastard operative of the OG having this stuff, though. Must be for those that know more, right? Or the super loyal?"

You scratch your neck. A bit of both, you suppose.

>"Jorn, didn't you wanna image train with Richter. Help jog your memory?"

Jorn nods as she finishes her drink
"Oh, totally sure. I mean, we know what the sapphire does, but it couldn't hurt right? Can we do that."

Richter glances down at her drink.
"Ah, yes. Not here , though. Perhaps in my or your quarters. It requires a certain amount of concentrations and there can be..."

Richter shoots you a slightly embarrassed microglance that Jorn misses.
...side effects."

Jorn shrugs.
"I'm down."

They both finish their drinks and bid you good night.

You shrug and decide to make use of the once a day facilities in the lounge.

You get a [GUMBALL]
This one is cinnamon flavoured! That might be for later. I wonder what it does.

You get a [BARON FORTUNE]
The skeletal automaton writes a fortune 'blows' on the ink and slides it into the receiving slot for you.

"When you make a name for yourself, make sure all the right people know it, kid!"

A quick lore question: I've noticed that goblins have scleras of differing shades of red; is there a pattern to that or is it random?

It's random, but it's a thing. The red and yellow of their eyes is variable, as is their shade of green. Ear length, etc.

>>5554127

He knows that. What he's pointing out is that he made a different character be "Spectre General". It isn't the first TF reference around here, and won't be the last.

AH. Wasn't aware of that.
