Your name is Sean Clayton, aka Gunsmoke. Last time, you settled a score in Athens, managed to keep the vessel from sinking, had some fun in Crete, and made landfall in Russian territory.

Now, you’re cruising up the Arctic Circle to see visit the infamous Kola Superdeep Borehole, an ex-Soviet industrial and scientific project designed to drill deeply into the mantle of the Earth’s crust.

> Hello everyone, and welcome back to another issue of DC: Henchman Quest! As always, I’m AxisQM. Rules are simple but flexible: 20-30 minutes to vote / roll what I say, rolls count even if you (or I) mess up the modifier, crit successes override, write-ins encouraged. If rolls / votes are slow to come in, I’ll do my best to adjust for it. Our cover art is a gift from a gigabased anon, and I still get a kick out of using it.

When the Set-Mobile finally shudders to a halt, you immediately crack open the panel door and step outside, desperate for an opportunity to stretch your legs after two days of being cramped inside of the van.

For the sake of safety, Jack had parked the van off-road and a fair distance away from the site proper.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtPk22NWB5Y

Your first impression from a distance is that the place is more than a little underwhelming.

If had been awoken from a stupor with no clue as to where you were, the first assumption would’ve been that it was some kind of junkyard.

Still, you’ve come all this way; might as well see it through to its end. Not quite sure what possessed you to head here in the first place, but at least you’ll get to enjoy the fresh air and the outdoors for a while.

After some quick stretching to get the blood flowing, you ensure that your cold-weather kit is snug. Once those checks are done with, you and the rest of your pals begin the trek towards the dig site. It’s bitterly cold, even through your protective gear.

You welcome the challenge; the vacation has had the side effect of making you feel a little soft as of late, and this place will definitely beat it out of you quickly.

The approach to the site doesn’t reveal any overt signs of a human presence, which is a blessing. Something tells you they don’t get a lot of tourists up this way, and you’d rather avoid having to humor the locals.

In terms of landmarks, you’re able to clock a few points of interest.

- A tall, rusting, tower-like building positioned neatly in the middle of the dig site. There’s gotta be some kind of purpose to it, but you can’t quite identify it from a distance.
- A small, half-collapsed barracks located near the edge of the site, likely where a token military force was garrisoned as security. Poor bastards, imagine how badly you would've had to have fucked up to be assigned here full-time.
- A caved-in complex with signs labelling it as one of many research outposts. Can't imagine what kind of research would be worth all this trouble, but governments are known for throwing money in figurative holes anyhow; why not a literal one as well?
- Some kind of brutalist office building, probably where the local paperpushers were headquartered. It says a lot about Soviet sensibilities that it’s much more impressive than any of its counterparts.
- A ramshackle building positioned near the decaying tower. You’d bet money that it’s the workers quarters, given its size and general disrepair even when compared to the site as a whole.

Maybe it’s just your paranoia flaring up again, but something about this place feels a little off; almost like the land itself is telling you to get back in the Set-Mobile and head back the way you came.

You gently chide yourself for getting the heebie-jeebies over the prospect of seeing a goddamned deep hole.

Ever since that clusterfuck in Athens, you’ve been catapulting to the most negative conclusions out of sheer habit. That little fishing trip in Crete helped to lessen the stress a bit, but you must still be a bit jumpy.

Besides, nobody else seems to have any similar misgivings; a fact that goes a long way in settling your fraying nerves.

You force yourself to focus instead on the positives; the landscape is remarkably pretty, barring the massive ecological scar dealt by the drilling site. Some people would call this terrain unforgivably desolate, but you can’t help but admire its harsh beauty. Either that, or you just have a well-developed appreciation for the benefits of isolation.

Ironically, the fact that you’re trudging toward a massive industrial ruin actually makes you feel a little more at ease. Means that if anybody tries to pick a fight or has been trailing you, there won’t be any risk of collateral damage in the ensuing skirmish.

Most folks would probably find that comfort a little strange, but long experience has taught you that it’s integral to find ways of steadying yourself.

You shake off that train of thought and focus instead on your plans; which structure would you like to investigate first?

Regardless of how you plan on spending your time, it’s probably a good thing you’re up-to-date on your tetanus shots.

In the end, you decide to…

> Search for the eponymous borehole itself. It’s the main attraction and product of this place, after all.

> Poke around the dilapidated ruins of the barracks. Maybe the Ivans left something of interest when they cut their funding and pulled out way back when.

> Dig through the broken remains of their research outpost. Nothing quite like mineral samples and old studies on seismology to really get the blood pumping.

> Explore the ruined administrative building. It’s probably full of dusty old paperwork and bureaucratic reports, but you never know what kind of stories you might find.

> Pay a visit to the old worker’s quarters. There’s something to be said for learning more about the men who did the heavy lifting.

The site is eerily silent, aside from the staccato crunch produced by boots meeting gravel and the ever-present whistling of the bitter wind.

The temperature is bearable for now, but once the sun begins to set, hypothermia could become a serious problem. Guess it’s a good thing you can produce fire, that ought to aid in keeping you warm should the need becomes great enough.

After some aimless wandering, you’re able to get a better gander at that tower you spotted earlier. Driven by a wild hunch, you poke your head through the uninviting entrance and confirm that the building serves as the remnant of the main drilling platform.

The now-identified drilling tower has definitely seen better days, seeing as how the roof has collapsed entirely; either from the pressures of time, climate, or both.

You enter carefully, acutely aware that any sane civil engineer would be screaming at you for enter a building that’s been condemned for decades. The fact that you can audibly hear the structure groaning due to the wind probably isn’t a good sign either, but you pointedly ignore that for now.

Judging from the thick layer of dust coating the place, you look to be the first person to step foot in here for a very long time.

The floor is covered in rusty hunks of scrap metal, punctuated with bits and pieces of concrete rubble and long-abandoned detritus strewn about. And right in the center of that pile of Cold War castoffs and the corroded carcasses of heavy industrial equipment, is the eponymous Kola Borehole.

Despite being less than a foot in diameter, this little number stretches thousands of feet into the bowels of the Earth, an incredible feat even by modern standards. The only problem is that the damned thing is sealed and bolted shut by some kind of cover. A pretty goddamn sturdy one too, when you tug on the cover a little to see if rusting had set in and weakened it, you don’t even manage to make it budge an inch.

It’s a bit odd that the cover is so strong, but that could just be a product of some decent engineering. Whoever made that cover, definitely made it to last; it’s showing none of the outward damage inherent to just about everything else in this place.

If you really want to see more, you could do some planning and figure out a way to crack the borehole open; you’ve got nowhere important to be.

Alternatively, you could just poke around the tower floor for any decent salvage. For whatever reason, it doesn’t look like scavengers (human or otherwise) have really picked this place over; could find something neat / profitable.

Lastly, there’s an office of some kind on the second floor, probably for the foreman or supervisor. Might be worth the effort of picking it clean; the stairs look a bit rickety, but you’re light on your feet to make it.

So, what would you like to do?

> Figure out a way to crack the borehole open. It’d be a shame not to take a peek into it or throw something down the hole.

> Try to reinforce the structural weak points using Abyssal Shield. It might be a pointless precaution, but you might as well put safety first.

> Head up the stairs to the office and rummage through the place. Might as well take what you’d like, it’s not like anyone is here to complain.

> Look around the tower floor for anything of note. The elements seem to have taken a pretty harsh toll on the the structure itself, but maybe there’s some worthwhile loot some worker stashed away.

It's just bolted shut. Use an abyssal shield in the form of a wrench and hit it as hard as you can to break it so you can unscrew it. Repeat until the nuts are off and it should be much easier to pry off. Of course, those things are probably on there tighter than a cuck's chastity cage so breaking the set might be damn near impossible.

Alright, how would you like to go about handling the protective cover?

> Bludgeon it repeatedly with a hefty chunk of Abyssal Shield. Might not be the prettiest strategy, but it'll do.

> Trudge back to the van and grab a couple thermite charges. Should be simple enough to position them and cut clear through.

> Nail the cover with a flurry of Fire Bolts to try and soften the metal, maybe even partial liquefy it. Might be a little strenuous, but it'll make for good practice.

> Look around for something scattered amongst the ruined machinery that might help. One man's junk is another man's B&E tool.

> Summon the Claw of Horus and wrench the cover off, the hard way. A little brute force and some elbow grease ought to do the trick.

You choose a simple and straightforward solution by summoning the Claw of Horus, positioning yourself at a good angle to twist the protective cover, and giving it every ounce of your considerable muscle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq1-_UPwYSM

There’s a dull groan of protest from the rapidly bending metal, which encourages you to give an almighty heave and tear the cover off in one fell swoop. The second that the borehole is no longer blocked, a noxious, oily black gas leaps from the freshly opened pipe like it was being sprayed from a firehose.

Your close proximity, coupled with surprise, proves to ne an unfortunate combination when you accidentally inhale a hefty blast from it. On pure reflex, you stagger away, hacking and wheezing from a foulness so potent that it’s nigh impossible for you to breathe or even think.

And instead of filling the room laterally with its putrid fumes, the twisted emanation instead drifts upwards, towards a roof that had been rent asunder by time.

The dosage that you were involuntarily exposed to takes a surprising amount of time to recover from; while the physical effects disappear quickly, the aftermath is much more insidious.

For an immeasurably long moment, it reeked of of blood, death, and pain; somehow channeling every negative emotion and traumatic experience you’ve ever felt into a sensation of condensed, inconceivable, dread. Whatever that shit is, it is inhuman. And if you let too much of it in your system at once, you’re liable to lose your mind well before you even come close to risking asphyxiation.

When you manage to force your hands to stop shaking and your mind to focus once more, you realize that things are rapidly shifting from bad to worse. The damned smog has formed a miniature cloud of some kind, and abandoned bits of machinery are beginning to rise from their long-abandoned places to steadily levitate towards it in an attempt to form some kind of macabre creation.

And judging from the way one of the few remaining columns is threatening to shake itself loose, the process will not stop with just the rubble and scrap on the floor; it’s going to assimilate the whole tower! Besides the fact that doing so will probably bring the whole damned house of cards down on your head, you really don’t want to know what’s going to happen when it’s finished gathering all of these materials.

If you can’t stop it before then, who knows what in the hell it might do!

Guess you may've discovered a major reason as to why the Russians sealed this place off and moved everyone out.
>>
>>5611596

(That's all for tonight, anons. As always, thanks for playing! We'll pick up from where we left off on Friday at 5:00 PM EST. Hope to see you all here next time.

The whole cover was torn off. It won't seal. Dumping rubble on it won't seal it either. Gotta spot weld it with fire magic or something. And good luck with all of the fart gas jetting out in our face when we try to do it.
>>
>>5612495
Cloud's still confined by the structure though. I will confess, I'm running off the assumption that the cloud needs 'mass', so to speak, to pull things to it. Dispersing it should hopefully buy Sean time for him to get his bearings together and come up with a better plan.

So, how would you like to handle this situation?

Your first move is to...

> Nail the cloud with a flurry of high-powered Lightning Bolts. All the metal it’s absorbing is an excellent conductor.

> Summon the Blade of Flame and try to immolate the cloud. Might as well see if some cleansing fire will do the trick.

> Cut your losses and get out of the building before it collapses. You’re not packing anything heavier than a vest, and a stray bit of rubble could do some serious damage.

> Disperse the ever-growing cloud using Twister. If you can break it apart, maybe it’ll eventually dissipate.

> Plug the borehole with Abyssal Shield. It won’t stop what’s already escaped, but it’ll help triage the situation from getting worse.

> Other?

Since there seems to be something of a tie between Abyssal Shield and the Blade of Flame, it's pretty handy that a combo was suggested.

Go ahead and give me some 1d100+10 to seal the borehole off and buy some extra breathing room.

Luck Drain still doesn't really apply in this case, given that the cloud is well out of range.

The first priority in any battle of attrition is cut the enemy off from his supplies and his reinforcements. Luckily, you happen to be in a situation where you have the luxury of targeting both at once.

You immediately create a rock-solid plug of obsidian material above the borehole and let gravity take hold, sending it crashing downwards and sealing the breach. You can hear the pipes beginning to groan and strain under the pressure, but it looks like your makeshift cork will hold, for now.

A substantial amount of the unnatural smog already managed to slip out, but you’ve got the rest safely contained for the time being. Hopefully destroying the cloud will cause the entirety of its noxious smog to dissipate, but you’ll figure out a more permanent solution later should it become necessary.

The ongoing flow may have been severed, but the cloud is still hoovering up scrap metal and other random junk for a purpose you can’t quite put a finger on.

Still, you’ve been around magic long enough that something smells rotten about this whole debacle. You’ll mull that over at another time, now is your chance to go on the offensive while it’s still distracted.

For lack of a better option, you summon the Blade of Flame. As soon as you grip the handle, a strange feeling begins to wash over you. It’s not hostile or stifling like the affects of the black smog, more akin to your hand being gently guided through an unmistakably familiar motion.

In this state, you take an experimental swipe with the Blade of Flame and something about it just seems to click. Almost without your intervention, a few dying embers sprout from the tip of the blade and gently drop onto the floor.

Operating more on instinct than anything else, you take an arcing swing at the cloud; a ridiculous idea in any other context, given that the damned fumes are hovering well away from melee range.

But not this time. Midway through the swing you’re compelled to mix in some of your Fire magic, to devastating results.
>>
>>5619320

An arcing wave of fire leaps from the Blade, carried heavenward in the same trajectory that you swung in. This purifying flame cleaves a blazing swathe through nearly a third of the cloud with effortless ease. Curiously enough, the cloud sluggishly manages to avoid the brunt of the damage, which would’ve sheared through it entirely.

Whatever you’re fighting must have some kind of intelligence to it.

Before you go off the handle with your new toy, you quickly check your internal reserves to make sure that maneuver was worth the price of the ticket.

The process is a little draining, but no more so than a couple of high-strength Fire Bolts; between that display and your efficient usage of Abyssal Shield, you’ve still got plenty of gas in the tank.

A slight grin tugs at your otherwise dispassionate features.

Looks like Greece wasn’t a total bust after all. And your gaseous opposition is the perfect excuse to put your newest weapon through its paces.

To that end, you…

> Draw on a hefty amount of power and channel it through the Blade of Flame. It’s risky, but it may give you enough kick to vaporize the cloud in one fell swoop.

> Mix a few arcing swipes from the Blade of Flame with Twister to create a small-scale firenado. It’s a bit unorthodox, but most of your good ideas tend to trend away from conventional logic.

> Continue to meticulously whittle away at the cloud and its constituent parts with the Blade of Flame. Slow and steady wins the race.

> Build a few makeshift cover spots using Abyssal Shield. If that thing starts hucking rebar your way, you’ll need the extra protection.

Patience is, as always, the key to victory.

Best to pick the cloud apart first, get it on its metaphorical knees, then go in for the kill.

And since the Blade of Flame seems to be doing the trick, you see no reason to diverge from your previous tactics, slicing it with more flaming projectiles to to cut it down to size.

After getting it down to maybe half of its original size, you notice that the cloud has abruptly ceased in its relentless collection efforts, almost like it’s dazed or confused. You seize the opportunity with both hands and begin mustering up the necessary energy for a particularly strong Twister.

In an attempt to bolster your efforts, you leverage every single language you’ve had the chance to pick up along your various journeys; a few stanzas from the Lord’s Prayer in Latin and Russian, a blessing of Hestia in Greek, concluded with some exuberant cursing in Spanish when the strain begins to be too much.

It might sound a bit sacrilegious, but you’d praise the goddamn Easter Bunny if it’d make this a little easier.

And your skill or piety proves to be sufficient, because the winding arcs of fire from the Blade of Flame mix easily with the frenetic whirlwind caused by Twister, uniting into a pillar of flame worthy of the nickname of “fire devil.”

The dark cloud is smack-dab in the center of your natural disaster, and is rent asunder by the scorching winds. While it writhes and burns as if it were screaming, you pull back from the burning remnant of the mining tower while still keeping a close watch on its violent dissolution.

As you do so, an idle thought leaps into your mind. Usually, there’s at least a brief flicker of remorse that implores you to show mercy to a defeated foe; a twinge of guilt courtesy of a long-neglected conscience.

In most cases, you stomp it out pretty quick alongside whichever asshole had the misfortune of crossing your path and getting in the way. This time is a little different, in that the aforementioned glimmer of clemency doesn’t appear for even a second.

It’s almost like the visceral wrongness of that eerie smog triggered some kind of primordial instinct that demanded such a thing not exist if you could help it. Rage and hate are more than old friends at this point, but this particular emotion dwarfs even those juggernauts. Perhaps your magic is to blame?

Either way, it’s something to keep an eye out for in the future.
>>
>>5619436

Once the tower is finished collapsing, you inspect the smoldering wreckage for any further sign of your foe, but it looks to have been consumed entirely in the greedy maw of your inferno. A quick check on the borehole reveals that no more smog is threatening to leak from it either, which is a plus, but there is something that’s eating at you.

None of your pals seem to have come running. Would’ve figured that the big fuckoff conflagration that lit the tower up like a signal fire would’ve attracted a bit of attention. This unease is only magnified when you try to send out a couple sigil pings that are unable to make contact with Jack or the others.

The connection itself is still strong, but it’s almost like your attempts at a hail are being severed mid-transmission.

Your mind is awash with possibilities, this could be some kind of natural phenomena, a side effect of inhaling that smog earlier, or something inadvertently playing haywire with your magic comms. Of course, it could also be an active interception and severing of your transmissions.

Regardless of the cause, looks like you’ll need to move on; not a whole lot left for you at the now utterly-destroyed drilling tower. Maybe some intel gathering could help put together the pieces of what’s going on at this site.

What’s your next move?

> Make your way to the dilapidated ruins of the barracks. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that they noticed this strangeness on their patrols.

> Dig through the broken remains of their research outpost. Something tells you that the scientists here studied a whole lot more than old rocks.

> Explore the ruined administrative building. If you want to find the real dirt, you need to follow the paper trail.

> Pay a visit to the old worker’s quarters. If anybody would be in a position to notice something off about this place, it’d be the guys who toiled in its epicenter.

You quickly navigate to the emaciated skeleton of a research outpost while keeping your eyes peeled for any of your compatriots. Unfortunately, you don’t encounter a single soul.

You do your best to keep the implications of that from occupying your mind as you enter the lab complex and head deeper inside, intent on gathering some damned answers.

Interestingly, despite the horrific damage to the outer structure, the corridors and rooms deep inside are practically untouched apart from a lack of cleaning and maintenance for decades. Most of the place has been stripped clean, but in an isolated corner, you find a particularly anti-social scientist’s workstation.

Amidst his belongings is a journal covered in a hefty layer of dust, its pages are worn but legible.

The contents are a bitch and a half to translate; not only is the Cyrillic faded from age, but it’s written in some awful handwriting that you would hesitate to classify even as chicken-scratch. It’s not a total write-off though, seeing as you manage to struggle through the few understandable portions and gather a few salient facts about life at the outpost.

There’s no listed author, but it’s pretty obvious that it’s the journal of one of the more senior scientists assigned to this outpost. Most of the earlier snippets from it are incredibly dry and boring, mostly detailing the status of the drilling and scientific data gathering.

Mid-way through, it gets a bit more interesting; after some kind of major discovery, a military unit of some stripe was called in to lock down the site and ensure that there was no information leakage to the outside world. This included curfews, and ever-present armed patrols, alongside other safeguards.

One of the scientists objected to this intrusion into their work, and was promptly spirited away in the dead of night before being struck from the official personnel records. After this example was made, the rest of the department kept their heads down.

From there, it’s mostly just a lot of whining and moaning about how all of their funding and manpower is getting redirected to the “Чyдaки” that the bureaucrats brought in. If you can recall, that term loosely translates to “weirdos.”

The last entry consists of the author musing over the feasibility of stealing a few peeks at the classified research data; judging from the fact that there is never any follow-up probably isn’t a good sign.

You tuck the journal away, just in case it somehow becomes more helpful later.

The real goldmine you uncover is the somehow still functioning mainframe racks he was keeping in his room. God bless computer nerds and their incessant hoarding.

And what you will about Soviet tech, but it can definitely take a licking and keep on ticking. Unless it blows up in your face, but at least a computer probably won’t do that.

Most of your expertise centers around cracking systems built in the current century, but you might as well work your magic on this dinosaur and see what secrets it may hold.

After a bit of tinkering, you finally manage to get one of the antiquated workstations to function, and begin plugging away at this pinnacle of Soviet computer science.

The goddamned Russian keyboard doesn’t do you any favors, but you soldier through it, eventually navigating through a few directories and discovering an encrypted set of files. Unfortunately, none of your cracking software is compatible with whatever bootleg OS this is running, which forces you to get creative and handle this old-school; by hand.

Archaic as it may be, the Ivans slapped some heavy-duty security on it, which only further enhances their value in your eyes. Nobody goes to that much trouble unless you’re protecting something that’s worth the extra mile.

Of course, right when you finally begin to start chipping your way through its protections, your meddling triggers some kind of alert that locks down your access to the terminal entirely.

You swear quietly to yourself and take a moment’s break to ease your rapidly mounting frustrations before you put your first through the damned screen.

While you do so, a chill runs up the back of your neck as your instincts begin to scream that you’re in danger; it doesn’t take long to identify the most likely source.

Standing at the entrance to the cavernous laboratory is a hulking mass of misshapen flesh and sinew, contorted into a set of dirty rags that may have once resembled a neatly pressed lab-coat. In some places, its skin is genuinely bulging at the seams like an overstuffed teddy bear. The face is somehow even worse, sporting a pair of soulless black eyes, and the kind of twisted visage that’d give a less hardened man nightmares.

There’s a beat of tense silence before it screams in the voices of a dozen men and charges towards you with reckless abandon, aiming to either skewer or trample you. Perhaps both. Its movements are quick and powerful, but uncoordinated. Almost like it’s unable to adjust fully to the veritable truckload of muscle mass that it’s hauling around.

You easily slide out of the way like a matador avoiding an angry bull. The only downside is that the creature crashes through the terminal you were working on, shattering it into little more than another broken relic of the Soviet empire.

While it’s open for an attack, your best move is to…

> Nail it with a flurry of Hex Bolts. It’ll be an excellent way to soften it up for the inevitable beatdown.

> Use Kinetic Frenzy to get in close for a bit of CQC action. It can’t hurt you if it can’t hit you.

> Summon the Blade of Flame and set it ablaze with several bursts of fire magic. You’ll risk torching the remnants of the outpost, but survival trumps all.

In situations like this, the tried and true solution of tactically applied violence is clearly the best option.

Your momentarily fraying nerves are bolstered by the comforting thrum of power coursing through your veins courtesy of the Claw of Horus.

A normal man would buckle in terror when confronted with such a disquieting sight, but not you.

In your case, normality left the building a long time ago.

Your eardrums are buffeted by a feral roar of defiance when you leap into the fray; it’s only when you’re well and truly locked into a desperate struggle with the creature that you realize that you were the one to produce the war cry.

Thus begins a furious jockeying for dominance between you and your massive foe.

Your opponent’s primary advantage is belied by its monstrous size and brawn. If it manages to overwhelm you or pin you in a confined corner, it will almost certainly tear you to shreds. A part of you has already mentally classified it in the same grade as a silver-back gorilla hopped up on bath salts and military-grade steroids.

Your advantage lies primarily in the strength of your mind, not the strength of your arm. While the ability to fight gallantly may have won many a battle, it can never reach its full potential unless it is leveraged properly. By targeting vulnerable points in its unnatural frame, you should be able to turn its own power against it.

Unfortunately, strain of maintaining the cinch quickly becomes more than you can take; you face a formidable opponent, maybe one comparable to the General on a good day. But it trades all of his finely honed ruthlessness for a bestial fury.

You can feel your grip on both your opposition and the situation as the whole begin to slowly weaken, turning to desperate action; an attempt to turn the tables in your favor by throwing a devastating punch to cripple the joint between its shoulder and mighty arm.

In a display of low cunning, the abomination catches your wild strike in the meat of its bulky arm, cushioning it entirely from any real damage. To perform such a maneuver, you had to cede your defensive posture, a decision that immediately returns to haunt you.
>>
>>5621636

The beast lets forth with a mighty one-two punch; throwing one of his fists in an overhand smash and the other aimed at your midsection to gut you like a wriggling trout.

In a display of well-honed dexterity, you adroitly dodge both of its titanic attacks and slam the Claw directly into the fragile cartilage right above the knee.

It stumbles, clearly weakened by your counterattack. In that moment of weakness, you are granted an insight when your gaze is drawn to its inhuman, sharklike eyes. This beast not only wants to kill you, it hates you with every single iota of its considerable strength.

It wants nothing more than to rend your broken body in twain and ensure that you never again see the light of day.

To ensure that it will never fulfill its bloody wish, you decide to…

> Continue hammering away at its weak points with the Claw of Horus. It’s tough, but you’ve killed plenty of things with longevity on their side.

> Retreat into the shadows and wait for the best moment to launch a sneak attack. Nothing wrong with an old-fashioned blindside.

> Use this opportunity to slip away from the fight. If you can figure out some way to bar the door behind you, you’ll save yourself the hassle of dealing with this two-ton problem.

> Taunt the beast into charging at you again, and conjure up an Abyssal Shield for him to ram into. Let’s see how it deals with a concussion.

> Channel the Avatar of Discord and end this in one decisive strike. It may be difficult to execute, but physical prowess doesn’t seem to be making much of a dent.

> Take out its limbs with brutal precision before delivering the coup de grace. Thoroughness is a virtue.

> Impalement. Nail it right in the chest and leave it dangling from the roof like a broken piñata.

> Tear its arms from their sockets and beat it to a pulp with them. A sufficiently primal end for a primal creature.

Hey anons, need to get a bit of last-minute editing done. Should be done in 10-15 minutes.

It takes a great deal of concentration to muster forth your arguably most powerful spell, and you only manage to produce a weaker construct before your focus is pulled back into the fight.

Still, it’s more than enough to give you a decisive edge; with one powerful lunge, you slam your construct’s talons directly into the beast’s giblets, dig around for something that feels like an intestine, and give it an almighty heave like you were playing tug-of-war.

The creature roars in agony and swipes at you blindly, too distracted by the pain to notice the second phase of your gambit; namely the fact that your off-hand talons are in the process of being driven fully into its ugly mug. You give it a few swipes for good measure, but you clearly managed to cut the remaining strings with your first brutal volley.

It collapses with one last gurgling death rattle promising pain and evisceration, before all settles into blissful quiet.

Your construct’s talons are absolutely covered in a runny black liquid that reeks to high heaven, which thankfully disappears when you drop the spell. Squeamishness isn’t exactly a trait you’re known for, so it’s saying something when a situation is so disgusting that you’re forced to take pause and evaluate. A paranoid voice in the back of your mind is howling that such a vile substance has the potential to corrupt you in both body and soul.

You ignore these fanatical murmurings, and prepare yourself to take samples of the creature’s flesh, tissue, and blood; it may be a risk, but it could be your ticket to discovering the truth about this outpost and its experiments. Might even give you an insight into improving your own strength.

Luckily, it’s not too hard to find test tubes and petri dishes scattered throughout the ruined laboratory. It’s not the cleanest glassware in the world, but it’s not like you’re liable to find any better out in the middle of nowhere.
>>
>>5628195

With the aid of the Blade of Flame, you cut a few rough strips of skin from the corpse of the recently-slain abomination and seal it securely within the petri dishes. As for its black ichor that passes as blood, you fill a few test tubes full of the stuff; carefully tucking it away with your belongings.

Wouldn’t want them to get broken and scatter their foul contents everywhere, especially when you don’t know if skin-to-skin exposure has any side effects. First chance you get, you’ll be handing this over to somebody with a bit more magical experience for a second opinion.

During your impromptu autopsy, you also noticed a couple strange details; despite the clearly anomalous physicality of the beast, the internal organs are roughly on par with that of the average human, albeit a fair bit larger. If anything, it serves as a clear indicator that whatever this thing was, it was definitely built on a human or pseudo-human framework.

The other strange thing involves some strange damage to the organs; every single one is riddled with punctures and old scars, like some lunatic had been jabbing at them with a scalpel to see how much it’d hurt.

Ominous findings, to say the least.

With your grim task complete, you have time to do a quick situational assessment and figure out your next move.

You should…

> Head back outside while you can. This place is bad news to its rotten core.

> Head deeper into the laboratory complexes. That’s where your foe must’ve come from, so you better prepare yourself.

> Look for a way to analyze the samples you’ve taken. You’re not a professional scientist, but how hard can it be to work a microscope?

The only viable path is forward, a lesson that you’ve held firmly to for the majority of your life.

Deeper inside the outpost is a sealed hatch leading into an underground complex; with a bit of elbow grease and muscle, you’re able to force it open.

With the aid of your trusty combat flashlight, you illuminate the pitch-black path and proceed cautiously.

Unlike the merely unhygienic state of the previous laboratories, this area has been absolutely trashed. Bullet holes and old scorch marks litter the floor and walls, almost masking the brownish-black splotches of dried blood flaked onto every surface.

These are the scars of a decades-old battle and long-ended bloodshed, yet something you cannot place about the morbid tableau has your hairs standing on end.

A few doors line the sides of the corridor, but they have been deliberately welded shut. A heavily antiquated intercom box rests at the ceiling, presumably as a vessel to deliver lockdown orders to announcements.

You move carefully and deliberately down the hallway, each footfall crackling slightly; courtesy of the old patches of blood. One of the larger patches catches your attention, and you attempt to idly amuse yourself by joking that it must’ve taken a veritable land whale of a man to have so much blood.

When you realize the implications of your idle musing, and uncover the missing piece of knowledge that had your instincts on edge, your bearing tenses.

There aren’t any skeletons. Despite all of the structural damage and signs of heavy fighting, you have yet to find any actual human remains, either here or upstairs. And considering that this place has been sealed off and total decay couldn’t have set in that quickly, certain implications must be assumed.

The optimist in you makes the argument that some kind of clean-up team could’ve made a token effort to recover the corpses and ensure that they received a proper burial.

The pessimist in you points out that they could’ve been gathered by something, for some insidious purpose you have yet to discover.

And considering the fact that you’re fresh from the monster mash, it would seem that your inner cynic is unfortunately correct as usual.

After all, it’s not like the Soviets would ever commit some kind of major blunder and then immediately bury it behind a wall of corpses and enough red tape to choke a rhino, right?

Yep, you’re fucked with a capital “F”.

Your unhelpful brain immediately throws-in its two cents as to the worst case scenario; when you were retrieving the Scrolls of Herculaneum, you were subjected to horrific visions of your old troops as resurrected monstrosities.

These unhelpful memories, coupled with your own unease, begin to make you imagine things; mobile shadows in the corners of your vision, bursts of steam that sound like mocking laughter, and other unsettling frights.
>>
>>5628319

And when your emotions finally calm upon regaining your composure, you can still hear the sounds of something scratching and shuffling nearby.

You move quickly and decisively, turning the corner to catch a glimpse of whatever is stalking you.

But there’s nothing there; just another labyrinthian corridor leading into an inky void.

You chide yourself for letting your imagination run wild and turn around, immediately freezing when you notice a massive discrepancy.

The layout of the corridor is different; the path you had been walking down has vanished, only to be replaced by a crossroads of some sort. Before you can rabbit-hole about that, the long-dead intercom system crackles to life, and a haunting melody begins to play over the speakers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0wIfloHu14

Something about it just seems to worm its way into your head and stir forth a festering brew of your darkest urges and fears.

Your flashlight slips from your grip and slow pressure begins to build up behind your eyes as reality begins to close in.

You are stranded in the darkness, and there is no-one that can save you; your “friends” have abandoned you or been killed themselves, else why have you been unable to locate them?

If you continue on this route, you may end up twisted into some kind of abominable freak, just like the specimen you dispatched in combat. Given the potential for such a horrid fate, would it not be preferable to end things on your own terms, like a man?

Your head idly nods along until a force from deep within screeches its discontent.

There are miles to go before I sleep.

Like a switch had been flicked, you break from this stupor, only to notice that a small trickle of blood has been trickling from your right nostril for some time.

The flow is quickly staunched as you retrieve your flashlight and proceed towards the crossroads.

The intercom, and by extension the music, abruptly shuts off after one last mournful peal of Russian.

Seems like your only option forward is to proceed down one of these paths, but which one should you choose?

> A dimly lit corridor leading into what appears to be some kind of operating ward. Gives you the creeps, but it’s worth giving a once-over.

> A heavily barricaded corridor leading into some kind of staff room. Perhaps it may be the site of a final stand of sorts.

> A dark and empty corridor leading into some kind of storage room. Could be that you’ll find something useful in there.

Interlude progress is slow but steady as referenced earlier; I'm sure you'll all enjoy further rumination about the "dead-end rural town with no prospects" experience. Now that work has slowed its pace a bit, I have more time to think / write, so that's good at least.

By the way, any opinions on my music choices thus far? It's tough to find older Russian stuff that sets the right tone, but I think I'm making it work.

Hello Axis how goes?
>>
>>5628390

It takes a bit of muscle to break through the barricades leading to the staff rooms, but you’ll take that over the endless void and the mad science laboratory. You’ve seen enough horror movies to know that you’d be asking for trouble.

For the sake of caution, you send a cluster of spiders skittering down the other hallways, but rapidly lose contact with them all at once, like the darkness itself swallowed them up.

Not an encouraging sign, but at least the ones you sent to scout ahead seem to be fine.

The door to the staff room isn’t locked, but some kind of heavy desk placed on the other side is blocking you from opening it.

It takes a few sturdy kicks, but you finally manage to send the desk clattering across the room and opening the entrance.

You flick at the light switch as you enter, and to your surprise and joy, a few dim lights flicker to life and cast a yellow glow over the room.

Aside from some overturned desks, old maps, and that kind of shit, the only thing of note is the weird sigil scrawled on the floor,. From a glance, it was sculpted with intense care . At least it had been, right up until the desk you dislodged tumbled over it and scratched several of its hieroglyphics.

You can tell that you’ve made a grievous error when the temperature begins to ratchet downwards and a strangely familiar mocking laughter comes from the shadows.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDNiE5CKuSw

A shifting silhouette in one of the far corners of the rooms address you with the casually disrespectful tone common to enforcers and leg-breakers the world over.

“Well, well, well; look what we have here? Been a long time, boss.

You know this voice; racking your brains for the last time you’ve heard its cadence and inflection.

”Well, maybe not for you. Time gets a bit weird downstairs.

The shadow’s voice is scratchy and weak, as if it’s gone unused for years.

“I’ve been looking for you, Sean. Never thought you’d find your way into this little history exhibit, but then again, you were never the brightest.

The figure steps forward into the light to reveal a grotesquely twisted yet recognizable form.

Delrio.

After you shredded him back in Venezuela, you had hoped that it would be your final encounter. Guess he must be the demonic equivalent of a cockroach. He definitely didn’t escape unscathed though; the difference between his previously human form and the anatomical composition standing before you is night and day.

From the look of things, the bulk of his skin has been flayed from his body, revealing only taut sinew and muscle; not including the misshapen lump of decaying flesh where his dominant hand once resided. The cost of failure, perhaps?

You’re unable to suppress your visible disgust as Delrio proffers his unholy stump in a twisted mockery of a salute in your direction.

“What, you don’t like the new look?”

His laugh, a groaning death-rattle that goes on for far too long, chills you to the core; a horror seared into your memory along with the rictus grin that his face has been contorted into.

His momentary bout of humor dissipates as quickly as it came, and he’s back to staring at you like a hyena eyeing a wounded gazelle.

“That hurts my feelings. Especially since you’re the reason for my little makeover; thanks to your lucky streak in Venezuela, I had to make a few sacrifices to get another shot at the big time.”

While he monologues, you try to get a quick peek at him with Magesight and gauge his aura, but the visceral evil of it forces you to clamp it down hard.

Whatever humanity he had left is gone for good, he’s little more than a decaying corpse with an ego at this point.

”But thanks for being a good sport and wandering right into one of the most cursed spots on the continent. When I drag your carcass to my boss, I’m gonna get everything I deserve and more. And trust me, I’m gonna enjoy every second of it.

The Ace of Winchesters would make this a cakewalk, but it’s an ocean away, and you’re unable to call for backup. Guess you’ll have to handle this the hard and painful way.

You’re about half-full on magic; taking down that brute earlier required a fair chunk of your reserves, but you should have more than enough for general combat usage. If you start throwing out the more energy-intensive spells though, you may just drain the tank.

Regardless, the most important thing is to stay calm and maintain your composure, he’s just tying to get under your skin and rattle you. If you lose focus for even a second, he’s sure to make a move.

You need to…

> Keep him monologuing while you look for a weakness in his desiccated form. He’s practically a shambling zombie, there’s gotta be something to exploit.

> Summon the Blade of Flame, and try to set him on fire with Fire Bolts. Gotta be careful not to consume all of the oxygen down here, so care is required.

> Nail him with a flurry of Hex Bolts. Won’t do any physical damage, but it should set the stage for another gambit.

> Bring out the Claw and rush him. It worked the first time, and it’ll do the trick now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atDAvD5gCdQ

You’re quick on the draw, summoning the Blade of Flame and sending an incandescent flurry of Fire Bolts at the unholy leper, yet your foe is surprisingly spry for a walking corpse.

Delrio dodges, ducks, dips, and dives around your barrage like he’s some kind of freakish ballerina. With each footfall, he gets a little closer to you, probably as some kind of convoluted setup for a melee attack.

The twisted smirk on the fleshless lips tells you that he’s relishing this opportunity to prove his superiority over you.

You have to give the sonuvabitch credit for ballsiness if nothing else, all the tortures and torments he must’ve been subjected to, and he’s still the same arrogant punk at heart.

Hasn’t learned a goddamned thing, especially in regards to one of the cardinal rules of warfare; never play with your food.

You can see that smug glimmer in his soulless eyes; in his mind, he’s triumphantly standing over your broken body, ready to be dragged into the infernal depths.

Those pleasant daydreams are dispelled when an extra-spicy Fire Bolt nails him square in the kisser, torching his exposed nerves.

Not long after, a distinct hissing begins to permeate the room; rather than an example of Delrio complaining or moaning, the noise is the result of the high-intensity flames cooking his body. He doesn’t seem to notice or feel any pain, yet it is a little distracting in that it smells kinda like bacon sizzling on the stove. Boy, if you had a shrink, they’d be really concerned about that association.
>>
>>5630478

Anyhow, now that Delrio knows you mean business and that he should quit monkeying around, he attempts to fall back into the shadows, presumably to flank you for some kind of sneak attack.

Unfortunately for him, you had that route clocked, and nail him square in the chest with another powerful Fire Bolt, setting another portion of his body aflame.

Delrio is still going strong, but he’s definitely feeling the burn, no pun intended. If you can land a few more solid hits, you might just be able to put the undead bastard back in his hole for good.

His grand plans of a humiliating victory have definitely gone the way of the dodo, seeing as how he’s yet to lay a finger on you.

While you’ve still got the momentum, what’s your next move?

You’ll…

> Keep laying into him with Fire Bolts. You may not have the brimstone handy, but fire ought to be enough to cleanse him.

> Trigger Volcanic Rage and go for the throat. There’s nothing to worry about breaking here, so you may as well run wild.

> Survey the room for something you can use. This was a military office at some point, maybe there are some munitions tucked away in the corner?

> Taunt him into doing something stupid. Delrio has always been a egomaniac, you just need to find the right button to push. (Include insult / sensitive topic )

> Study that broken sigil in the middle of the room. It won’t be easy, but maybe you can jury-rig some kind of fix and restore its powers.

> Get in close with the Blade of Flame. Delrio always had a flair for knifework, it’d be a fitting tribute to his cowardice; dispatching him with his own speciality.

How would you like to handle Delrio now that he’s been severely weakened?

> Eradicate him. You’ll put a torch to immortal soul and ensure that he never has the chance to bother you again. His legacy will be nothing but ashes, fit only to be blown away by the uncaring winds of time.

> Banish him. With some luck, you’ll be able to cast him back into the mouth of Hell, this time with an assurance that he will ne’er return. Sure hope he enjoys his just reward for his deeds. (Will require a roll)

> Imprison him. It’ll take some doing, but you could potentially force Delrio’s soul into some kind of vessel or container. You could squeeze him for answers, or potentially use it as a conduit for Jack’s banishment ritual. (Will require a roll.)

As always, thanks for playing! Hope you enjoyed, I'm venturing out of my comfort zone a little bit with some of the horror elements, so let me know how you're liking it.

Slight spoiler incoming, so be warned: Delrio was absolutely slated to come back at some point, but it definitely wasn't here and now. However, I couldn't resist it with that nat 1.

"Tonight on BBC we bring the latest news from the recent events going on in Venezuela. It has been four weeks since the toppling of the last regime and much has changed since."

"Banning the free-market economy has led many companies to lose entire subsidies in Venezuela, causing major delays in supply chains affecting a range of consumer goods. Textiles, electronics, and petroleum products have all seen the cost of goods rise well above its last year prices in just under a month. Analysts estimate as much as a 45% mark up began hours after the fall of the old regime and another 137% price increase from nationalization of subsidiaries under the new Junta regime."

"International outrage has dimmed as Venezuela gives out heavy sentences while allowing leniency over corruption charges. Showing a surprisingly level handed approach to justice instead of eliminating potential political threats to their power. Commentators point out that the regime is attempting to legitimize its rule of law over the land by holding trials to the accused. However, as the Junta banned any foreign reporters into their territory, we cannot confirm anything about their trial procedures or the status of the accused."

"Since the failure and blocked proposal of a UN intervention, Venezuela has begun vacating its embassies from the US, UK, and France while reaffirming its embassies to China and Russia as it sends new envoys to other countries such as Saudi Arabia, Colombia, and Panama. Such an action shows a shift in the balance of power across both hemispheres as Venezuela appears to position itself to take advantage of the political and energy turmoil shaking the world."

"However, the most dangerous action of the current administration of the Supreme Junta was the systematic pardon system to all rebel groups active during the civil war. Leading many experts to believe such an action will inevitably lead to new systemic corruption within the Venezuelan army. Communists, criminals, addicts, and drug runners are expected to fill out a good portion of the Junta army, potentially leading to a narco state rebellion in the future."

"Only time will tell if the newly formed government will either collapse into another civil war or continue the practices of the old government. However, many agree that this is only the start of a new age for the country."

"This is Natalie Weber from the BBC coming back after these messages from our sponsors."
>>
>>5632863
"Today on Venezuela Independent Broadcasting we will ask the enlisted why they are signing in with the new junta government. Standing here with me are a communist, rat, and cartel member. So why did all of you join the junta after years of fighting each other?"

"I joined up after the junta gave up the capitalist chains and invested back into the community. I didn't expect that they shared some of my views. Would have preferred a communist government but I will take what I can get."

"I just joined so I could keep my guns and avoid getting wacked by the new government for my past crimes. I even heard they give bonuses if you bring in your own equipment and convince other people to join up."

"I just wanted an actual paycheck and real food instead of fucking crayons all the time. Everything else is just a bonus."

"Thank you all for your time. Now while pardons have expanded our security forces and funding diverted to help the agricultural sector. The government still expects to take at least six months to show noticeable change to food imports and employment levels, however the sheer fact that the government is at least attempting to improve civilian life and cracking down on capitalist traitors has already captured the hearts and minds of the average citizen. With multiple plans in place Venezuela's future looks bright."

"This is Fernando Cortez from VIB and glory to the junta. Back to you Armando."
>>
>>5632864
"Tonight on Xinhua News Agency, the CCP and Russian Federation have begun extension of diplomatic efforts after both nations recognize the legitimacy of the Supreme Junta government. While many on the security council and the JLA wanted to initiate a "peacekeeping" intervention into the country, said proposal was denied as heavy interference into sovereign country's affairs. Just like the current peacekeeping efforts of the US in Afghanistan."

"The Russian and Chinese envoys have issued apologies on behalf of their respective governments due to the lack of action during the previous decade-long rule of the last dictator. Due to not wanting to cause further instability to the nation and subvert their right to self govern. While our words cannot heal old wounds, both countries hope to build mutual economic, political, and military ties to bolster the newly freed nation."

"Already the Supreme Junta has placed thousands of orders for farming equipment, fertilizers, and increased their imports of food stuffs from both countries. Boosting imports and exports of both countries by as much as 376% from last year's records in just a month."

"While most of the major powers refuse to recognize the Junta, many neutral countries have begun their own diplomatic efforts to gain access to the Venezuelan economy. In part after the failed UN proposal as well as the lack of civilian unrest, giving neutral nations a sense of confidence in the continuation of the Junta government. Many experts are surprised at the sheer lack of conflicts and power struggles between the government and its now pardoned rebel groups. The reasons range from war fatigue after fighting for years, the brutal war culling the most extremists of all the groups, to many believing in the new hope for the country's future. While the true miracle of the Venezuelan dream might never be known, we at the CCP will embrace the new future."

"This is Xiao Ling from XNA, we will have a quick break and come back with the full story."

TRIUMVIRATE EYES ONLY BURN AFTER READING

I will attempt to keep this as brief as possible. There is too much to go over in a small memo over Adjutant Tango now designated Ghost. Starting off, Ghost came out of nowhere one day without notice. He is not an enlisted, con, or a civilian. His features and armor put him as a foreign backed power seeking some unknown goal that somehow coincided with overthrowing Pedraza. But every action he made and spies sent into recon paint a different picture. He is backed by resources and skill but never once has any additional resources, orders, or new foreign mercenaries came to support his operations. If we was backed by a government either they sent him on a suicide mission or he doesn't need it. And as far as the intelligence agency can tell, it's true.

This Ghost is highly skilled, bloodthirsty, and intelligent. Instead of asking for money, artifacts, or simple equipment he went straight to establishing political, economic, and military ties to Venezuela as if he was aiming for a much greater target than money. The IT department is terrified that the Ghost somehow bypassed all their systems and collapsed the entire supply network within a day. Ex-cartel members jump at shadows after their entire mole list was somehow flipped and wiped within weeks of the ghost arriving and leaving behind a gutted hierarchy system. Even the enlisted praise his restraint, coordination, and training of all its members never once throwing their lives away in wave tactics or issuing suicide missions.

Not to mention the fact that Ghost knew how to take over major economic centers beforehand and became an untouchable symbol of the revolution. Basically turning from something that could be bought off into a major obstacle to the triumvirate. Leaving the only solution to be adding a shadow seat to the table, a shadow sword under all our necks if we turn into another Pedraza. If such a thing ever occurs then it is expected that Ghost will ensure another transition of power backed by the public and the enlisted.

I do not know why Ghost helped Venezuela, I do not know what drives him, I do not know if we can ever lower our guard around him. What I do know is this. He trusts his men, he has a burning fire and a steel spine, he risked his life for our people, and all he wanted was to tie his future to our nation. Ghost bled for this country and we owe it to make our country great again and trust that Ghost will not turn on us. When half the world hates us for having the gall to stand up against our oppressors, we need all the help we can get to hold onto our country’s future.

Signed Admiral Miguel Suarez.

That's awesome anon.

I wonder how the junta plans to better the country since central planning isn't conducive to economic development but, given how a free market exposes a weak state to subversion by foreign interests, the new policy is understandable.

I only hope that they open things up once everything settles down. If they need some help with keeping a lookout for glowie bullshit then I think Sean would be happy to help.
>>
>>5632881
They can get by with boosting the agricultural sector for a few months but they will need to open the market to imports from China and Russia. Consumer goods demand will eventually pressure them to open trade as a happy population will want to keep them in power. Also helps that they will have a food surplus from all their efforts in self-sustainability and ooooiiil will eventually push them into being a major southern power if they leverage their economy in the future.

>>
>>5632899
I suppose abolishing taxes on farmers and having their own oil fields to source their fuel from can keep things going well enough. It's just that Venezuela, like most countries, cannot source everything it's market demands on it's own so autarky is not feasible.

I think the most sensible course would be paying off the national debt, adopting the gold standard but most importantly to have a good intelligence apparatus set up and then steadily liberalizing the economy. As a benefit to us, getting in early on such an economy would be a great opportunity to clean the money from our illegal ventures while also benefitting our new host country, a mutual benefit.

"This just in! The Ghost of Venezuela, leader of the revolution, starts huge investments throughout the country! New jobs and new products have been made both available and accessible!"

I really enjoyed the read, anon. You're not far off the mark in quite a few places, I especially liked the Chinese state media part; aside from the apology part, it hits most of the same beats that I would've considered for a press release.

In case I'm not expressing it well enough, I've got a big dumb grin on my face.

>>5632881
Central planning is indeed a poor facilitator of economic growth, but the Junta needs to take a hardline approach if they really want to consolidate their power. Potential liberalization efforts can come later, once the situation has been stabilized.

>>5632917
To be fair, it's less of a "abolished taxes" deal and more of a "we've got land if you need work." type of deal. It's ironically similar the communist practice of land redistribution, but with more of a populist slant to it. It helps that there are plenty of former rebels who would rather dig a field than hold a gun again. Literal Cao Cao tactics at work, but it's a classic

Plus, now that a lot of the Western corporate interests have been forced out at gunpoint, that leaves a handy vacuum for some more morally flexible trade partners.

>>5633069
Honestly, that's kind of what I see on the cards. The chances of a reconciliation with the American bloc are slim to none, seeing as how the country is steered by folks who've been brutalized by an American-backed dictator for decades.

The "abolish taxes on farmers" thing was simply a method to accomplish the "boosting the agricultural sector" part of that anon's suggestion, it wasn't a statement about what the Junta was doing.

This was such a treat, man. Really good stuff, and I really liked that this Comic book-inspired quest takes some time into trying to shove some of irl politics and seeing the world revolve around Sean's takeover. Really good stuff.

But from my personal point of view, hopefully the militia and the Junta once they're at their feets and being independent, they would start and either change the views of some of the people Sean took.

Like for example making the communists not being communist, the Junta starting to disband themselves from the cartel and get rid of some of the criminal bands instead of using them as troops (Something that Venezuela's goverment already does irl), and maybe in some ideal world, we get information from the US goverment and Task Force X to link them to the Pedraza's founding and backup + some other information to bring the house of cards down. Or at least, bring Lok down and bring to the light and public information of Task Force X stuff.

Your plan is simple enough; get him mad, get him stupid, and bait him into getting close enough to stick him repeatedly with the Blade of Flame. If the Blade was able to destroy that evil smog, maybe it’ll be able to harm Delrio as well. And if not, winning the psychological battle will still ensure that the actual battle will be that much easier to bring to a satisfactory conclusion.

> “You’re awfully cocky for somebody that I’ve never seen win a straight fight. The only time you ever managed to beat me, the General had to do all the heavy lifting first. And even then I came back, harder and stronger by virtue of my own merit. Meanwhile, you traded yourself for a couple cheap tricks that I could blow out of the water on my worst day. Is that your go-to strategy, attaching yourself to the biggest dog you can find until a better prospect comes along?”

He tenses, and you can tell that you’ve struck him in a sensitive spot. Before he can recover, you go in for the killing blow.

> “It’s a seller’s market, and you bartered the only valuable thing about you for pennies on the dollar; as brilliant a decision as can be expected from a man of your caliber. Was it worth it? I can’t imagine so, judging from the way I’ve been kicking you around like a cheap piñata. If anything, your new life would be better spent as a haunted house prop.”

As expected, Delrio swallows the bait without even a first thought, let alone a second; leaping towards you like an unruly beast.

This anger makes him sloppy, a fact that you’re more than happy to take advantage of.

You wage an expert defense, driving the Blade of Flame into every extremity that gets a little close for comfort, carefully waiting for the opportunity for a decisive blow.

Unfortunately, your insults seem to have been a little too successful in that Delrio completely disregards his own safety for a better shot at ripping your throat out. Your technique is enough to contain his animalistic fervor, but it becomes a close-run thing, as he rapidly intrudes into your personal space.

The both of you are face-to-decaying-face, close enough that you have to be leery of him trying to rip a chunk out of you with his teeth. As this fateful lock-up continues, Delrio’s empty eye sockets burn with a corrosive mixture of ferocious hatred and triumph.

He truly believes that there is no chance that you can hold him back.

You will never be free of me, Sean. No matter how hard you fight, no matter how hard you struggle, I’ll always be waiting for you. And I only need to win once. He hisses like a viper, close enough that a small amount of spittle lands on your jacket.

While you grapple for dominance, Blade of Flame in hand, you finally spot the weakness you had been waiting for; slipping around Delrio’s guard and driving your knife solidly into his chest.
>>
>>5635074

> “Not long ago, I would’ve agreed. But unfortunately, you aren’t the only one here who has picked up a few new tricks. Goodbye, Delrio; not that anyone will mourn your passing.”

A righteous heat begins to flow through the Blade of Flame, directly into Delrio’s corrupted form; rancid laughter quickly fading into unintelligible howling as his demonic soul and essence are scrubbed clean. He screams and rants and shrieks the entire time as his being begins to dissipate entirely, piece by tiny piece.

When the process is complete, there is no sign of Delrio, his presence, or that he ever even existed in the first place. Wiped clean, in every conceivable way that matters.

Well, that was a bit heavy; you’ve done a lot of killing in your life, but this is the first time that you’ve gone so far as to obliterate a soul entirely. Still, you comfort yourself with the knowledge that it needed to be done, Delrio was far too dangerous to leave operational in any capacity.

From a certain point-of-view, you were doing him a favor; something tells you that for all his bluster, Delrio would’ve suffered greatly for for coming up short yet again.

Your musings are interrupted by a low rumbling that you identify from long experience; the ceiling, and potentially the whole complex is about to come crashing down on top of you.

What’s your next move?

Before you leave, you use a well-positioned set of Abyssal Shields to strengthen the steadily-collapsing roof and support columns; it won’t hold for long, but you’re used to working against the clock.

Besides a couple of minor errors, you manage to sketch out a comprehensive outline of the sigil and the hieroglyphic symbols rounding it. You don’t really have the time nor the energy for a proper analysis at the moment, but it should come in handy for your future research.

Similarly, you’re able to quickly comb the staff room for old communiques, logbooks, and duty rosters. It all gets dumped unceremoniously with your gear; you probably missed at least a few things, but you’ll have to live with it.

Judging from the way that your Abyssal Shield is starting to sag under the pressure, you have only minutes left before the place crumbles under its own weight; it’s definitely cutting it close, but you can make it.

How would you like to improve your chances of escaping before the place goes to bits?

Once you're back on the surface and have a bit of breathing room, how would you like to spend it?

Unfortunately, it's taking me quite a bit longer than I'd like to get this update in a reasonable shape.

I hate to jump ahead like this, but I'd prefer to get our future plans sorted out while I wrestle with a bout of writer’s block.

You need to get out of here fast; the Claw, mixed with the heady power granted by triggering your Volcanic Rage, is the most expedient and economical option available.

As you charge through the long-abandoned corridors, the red mist slowly begins to cloud your thoughts and mind; it’s not easy to retain your finer memory and backtrace your steps back to the entrance, but you make it with time to spare.

Only moments after your unceremonious escape, the laboratory implodes, morphing from a half-wrecked shambles to a completely wrecked shambles.

You take in greedy breaths, gratefully inhaling air that doesn’t reek of brimstone and dust.

The subtle wrongness that’s been dwelling in the back of your mind has dissipated, taking the edge off your more negative thoughts. Can’t help but wonder if the demonic presence was the cause of all this or if it was simply an unfortunate by-product of the yet-to-be established fuckery the Reds were up to here.

Doesn’t really matter now, you need a quick breather.

You slump over, utterly exhausted from the unforeseen events of the day yet still cognizant enough to summon the Blade of Flame, intent on studying it in greater detail while the experience is still fresh in your mind.

It’s been quite the handy little number, you’ll give it that.

Now that you’ve gotten a bit more experience with it, you’ve naturally become more attuned to some of its quirks.

Namely that when you wield it, it feels far, far weaker when compared to the veritable jolt you get from the Ace of Winchesters. In more mundane terms, the Ace of Winchesters hits like a .50 cal, whereas the Blade of Flames hits like a squirrel rifle; it’ll still kill if you nail your target in the right spot, but it’s near impossible to take down bigger game.

Guess you got lucky that Delrio was a particularly weak species of hellspawn, but there is an interesting caveat there.

The little flicker of power? It’s just a tad stronger than it was before. Not massively, but enough to notice.

Almost like it gets more lethal to demons, with the more of em it kills. If you can confirm your theory, the Blade could prove to be another equalizer in your arsenal when it comes to dealing with magical bullshit.

Once you’ve managed to get your shit together, you send out another sigil ping for Jack, requesting an immediate extraction.

Thankfully, your message gets through with no sign of any interference whatsoever. In the blink of an eye, he’s at your side and mercifully teleports you back to the Set-Mobile.

After you confirm that you’re not hurt beyond a few scrapes and nicks, you give the others a sanitized debrief regarding your latest misadventure. Apparently, from their perspective, you had basically vanished into thin air the second everyone split up, shortly before some burst of magic forcibly ejected them to the outskirts of the site and erected some kind of intangible barrier.
>>
>>5636552

Set and Thoth were devising some way to break through when it suddenly collapsed, presumably when you exterminated Delrio. Ten bucks says that barrier was the thing stopping your messages.

While reclining in the comfort of the Set-Mobile, an errant thought pops into your mind; with a good excavator and some seasoned workers, you could potentially bulldoze the rubble and poke through the lower levels again, presuming that it hasn’t been crushed entirely.

But for now, you’ve had just about enough of this place; if necessary, you can mount an expedition once your more immediate goals have been taken care of.

You’ve recovered a thick sheaf of paperwork, plus the samples from that freak in the laboratory. Speaking of which, you immediately have Set and Thoth examine the aforementioned samples for any hidden dangers.

To quote Thoth; “While there is a heavy undercurrent of dark magic throughout, time has weakened it considerably. Any experimentation should proceed with the utmost care, but you possess the requisite experience to know as much.”

Set concurs for the most part, aside from the “utmost care” part.

As ringing an endorsement as you can ask for, on both counts.

It’s going to be a long way to the Urals and Yekaterinburg, how would you like to spend it?

After the events at the Kola Borehole, you’re forced to admit that you’ve been rattled pretty strongly. Between all the fighting and running, you’re liable to pull a muscle from jumping at the shadows.

In an effort to calm yourself down and find some distraction, you petition Jack and ask to borrow some of his poetry books, something non-work related that’ll give your brain a rest.

Ever the soul of charity, Jack is happy to lend you his books, and offers to discuss their finer meanings with you as well.

Your pick is of course, Ernest Hemingway; a complicated man, but one whose works tend to resonate rather strongly with you. While other poets are happy to write verse after pretentious verse extolling the virtues of sacrifice and duty, Hemingway was one the few willing to write candidly about the harsh realities facing the soldier’s lot.

But you’ve had enough doom and gloom for a while, everyday life contributes to that particular sensation well enough without further fuel for the bonfire.

You explain your though processes to Jack, who sits and listens intently as you spill your guts out.

One of his shorter works named Chapter Heading has been bouncing around inside your noggin for a long time, and one of Jack’s books offers a helpful refresher that you proceed to recite.

“For we have thought the longer thoughts
And gone the shorter way.
And we have danced to devils’ tunes,
Shivering home to pray;
To serve one master in the night,
Another in the day.”

The poem prompts several concerns that you can’t dismiss out of hand; namely, what value are all of your thoughts and ideals, if you lack the willpower to hold yourself to them? Does that make them mean more, as a shining ideal to strive for and improve towards?

Or is it a scarlet letter of hypocrisy, one that marks you as someone ready to stand on the soapbox and demand change, yet is fundamentally incapable of meeting the standards that you hold others to?

You haven’t exactly been on a hot streak of morality lately, and part of you idly wonders if you’re falling into some bad habits.

He puts his hand on your shoulder; you bristle out of pure reflex, but quickly calm down.

“Need I remind you that you’re a better person than you give yourself credit for?”

Jack clears his throat and begins to recite verses from total memory.
>>
>>5636681

“There is one thing nobly worth while,
Though the parrots chatter and scream,
Though the critics howl and the cynics smile,
And life seems a mocking dream.

There is one thing that grandly counts,
In the face of the tempting glare,
In the tempests of doubt on the lonely mounts,
In the thickets of thorny care.

And that's to hold the truth!
To abide with justice and right,
To be a man in genuine sooth,
With heaven's invincible might.

There are bowers of beauty and love,
There are trumpets of lordly fame,
There are pleasures below and blessings above
That flash with a lifting flame.
Let them flaunt their allurements high,
Let them beckon and call and cajole;
There is only one worth in the earth and the sky,
And that is an honest soul.”

Jack concludes the poem, with a quiet bashfulness to his body language that is quickly explained.

“I have something of soft spot for the works of Amos Wells. Had the pleasure of meeting the man once, back when he was a professor at Antioch. He was kind enough to sneak me some material from their archives in exchange for a spot of my company. I’ve always harbored a sneaking suspicion that A Chance Meeting was actually about our dealings, but what can you do?”

When you request to see the poem in question, Jack balks a little and surreptitiously tries to put his poetry volume away while making the excuse that he needs to check on Set. Before he can escape, you adeptly snatch it from his grasp and jokingly fend him off while you flip to the correct page and read it aloud.

I had a moment's talk with him
And saw that he was good, --
A spirit candid to the brim,
Breathing of brotherhood.

A fleeting face, a stranger face
I shall not meet again,
Yet earth is now a friendlier place,
And full of better men.

If such a whiff of soul transforms
So blessedly and far,
What of that world beyond the storms,
Where none but true men are?
>>
>>5636684

You finish your recitation, raising a solitary eyebrow and proceeding to lightly hassle Jack.

> “Well, you’ve certainly got a high opinion of yourself”, you state in a complete deadpan while internally laughing.

He stares at you for a moment, stunned, as you struggle to conceal a poorly disguised grin that he can easily spot.

“You are an incorrigible beast, Sean. I hope you realize this.” Jack proclaims, voice colored heavily with faux-anger.

His statement only causes the last remaining shred of dignity to flee as you begin howling with laughter.

Jack’s composure also falls apart, and he too begins chuckling.

After what feels like ages, your mirth is extinguished, and you feel like the weight of the world has been lifted from your shoulders.

How do you feel about the standing of your immortal soul?

> There are moments that you could’ve handled more gently, but everything you have done has been in service of something greater than yourself. Be it good or bad, so long as you continue to believe in what you fight for, that is truly what counts.

> Perhaps Marcus Aurelius put it best; “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” So long as you keep at it and stay true to your beliefs, what more can anyone ask of you?

> On the battlefield, morality has no place. Your own survival, and that of those close to you, supersede all other priorities. No matter the cost.

> A man may perform awful deeds while being pure in heart and intention, and acts of great charity can be performed for superficial and self-serving reasons. It’s all shades of gray anyhow, maybe you should take Jack’s advice and quit worrying about it.

In the moments where you can grab and maintain his ever-shifting attention, you harangue Set for details about the nature and weaknesses of demons.

To your surprise, the knowledge that Set provides is largely theoretical in nature and is bereft of his usual grandstanding and posturing. Reading between the lines, it’s clear that while Set has done some heinous stuff during the course of his existence, that particular line is one that he strays far away from.

it’s a lot to remember, and a few of the less important nuances fail to make an impression, but you take copious notes when possible and maintain your attention as best as possible on the key points of Set’s wild lectures.

That while stronger demons may be unique in strengths and weakness, weaker demons have generally overlapping deficiencies.

That the greatest and most powerful of the demonic host each possesses their own sigil, that can be found on their property, soldiers, and supplicants.

That demons have a murky hierarchy of nobility from the greatest and mightiest of damned generals to the weakest and most cowardly cannon fodder.

That there is a tangible difference in strength and ability between the unwillingly possessed and the beneficiaries of a Faustian bargain.

That if there was ever a unifying force that could prevent greater demons from their relentless infighting and petty squabbles, the world would be in serious trouble.

Overall, between your recent row with Delrio and Set’s tales, you’ve managed to establish a solid foundation of knowledge about demonic culture, biology, and tactics.

It also helps that Thoth is usually there to reel Set back on topic and away from one of the many strange tangents he’s liable to lapse into.

> Skill Improved! Flames of Damnation: +20 to any rolls involving demons, demonically possessed individuals, or any other such instances of hellish activity.

In more mundane circumstance, you’d be forced to ride the Trans-Siberian railway eastwards.

Luckily, the Set-Mobile is made of sterner stuff than your average automobile and aside from the occasional rough patch on country roads, handles the journey with no complaint.

Still, you make a point of trailing it as closely as possible for a few reasons; namely novelty, bragging rights, its easily recognizable trail, and the fact that it can be followed all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

For now though, your destination is the city of Yekaterinburg, a part of the Sverdlovsk Oblast and the Ural Federal District. From what you can gather, oblasts are a rough equivalent to states, and federal districts are some government invention to centralize regional power. A cynical part of you whispers that it sounds more like a personal fiefdom that anything else, but it’s not like you’re an avid scholar of federal politics, Russian or otherwise.

Anyhow, you wouldn’t have pegged the Ural Mountains as a particularly attractive place to settle down, but that might be your homegrown sensitivities kicking in.

During the drive, you compose a mental checklist of the spots where you’d prefer to play tourist.

The first on your checklist is the Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land, which is something of a mouthful. For your own sanity, you’ll just abbreviate it to the “Church on Blood,” which is a pretty goddamn cool name for a religious site.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G136GODWKhc

Apparently it’s kind of a hybrid between a church and a museum, which is pretty understandable given its reason for construction; namely that it’s built on the former execution site of the Russian royal family during the civil war.

The finishing touches of its construction was only finished a few years back, and it’s been a popular tourist destination ever since, especially in Russian Orthodox circles.

With the bulk of your focus on the road, the trip passes in what feels like the blink of an eye. The tundra is eye-catchingly beautiful, but you’re a little more focused on not getting the van stuck in mud or something equally annoying.

When you finally reach Yekaterinburg, the others are happy to drop you off at the location of the church. You extend an offer for the others to join you, but nobody seems to be that interested. In your heart of hearts, you’re a little glad; as much as you’ve thoroughly enjoyed the time with your pals, spending time in an enclosed space with them for days on end has you more than a little stir-crazy and eager to have some time to your lonesome.
>>
>>5642483

The excuses offered to you differ in both validity and politeness.

Jack can’t really get in due to the mystical weirdness that keeps him away from places of spiritual power.

Set couldn’t care less about seeing a church, unless it was to either steal or deface something.

Thoth would much rather settle in at a café and read.

Bobo has the look of a monkey that needs a few stiff drinks pronto.

Pandion would prefer to just aimlessly wander around the city and drink in the sights.

And Nessie practically glues herself to the heater to fend off the encroaching cold; besides, it’s not like you could really take her inside anyhow.

When you go to head into the church itself, you discover that there’s no entrance fee. Guess it makes sense not to monetize the religious aspect of the experience, but you still would’ve expected a charge to see the museum parts.

Not that you’re complaining of course, free is free. Even better, the place doesn’t have that many visitors at the moment; you were half-worried to see the place buried in tourists, but it looks like you’re fortunate enough to visit during their offseason.

So, what would you like to do? (Choose 2 Options

> Make your way to the Imperial Room, where the main altar is located. It was purportedly built on the same plot of land as the original basement where the Tsar and his family were executed. If you want to pay your respects to the last of the Romanovs, this would be the place.

> Find a quiet place in the lower church to reflect and pray. It’s been a long time since you’ve stepped foot into a place of worship, and longer still since you’ve felt comfortable in one. But given the foes you’ve found yourself squaring up against lately, a bit of divine providence wouldn’t go amiss.

> Wander around the upper church and examine the mosaic art of those martyred under the Soviet regime. While the subject is more than a little macabre, the art is still fascinating stuff. Who knows, you might even try your luck at making a few sketches.

> Speak with one of the priests about the history of the site and its significance. Ever since you’ve started working for Jack, you’ve honed a keen interest in learning more about the events of the past. It’d be a good way to practice your Russian, if nothing else.

> Spend some time in the outside gardens and enjoy the ambience. Might be a good opportunity to give their flowers a once over; you haven’t had a good opportunity since Belle Reve to get your hands dirty in a good way. Who knows, you might even get to take a few home with you.

> Your old troops. Their loss still stings, worse than any hit you’ve ever taken. But every day it gets a tiny bit better; maybe you’ll even be able to forgive yourself in due time.

> Jack. For all of his careful rationalizations and well-reasoned arguments, it’s plain to see that he’s terrified that he’s going to make an awful mistake. You’ll always be in his corner, but you might as well let the big man upstairs know where you stand.

> Gaius. Hopefully he found what he was looking for when he passed on from his endless vigil. May we all be so lucky when the time comes.

> The Steel Wolves. Eventually, you’ll be leading them into an uncertain future. The idea of screwing it all up (again) horrifies you more than anything else.

> Delrio. He was a backstabbing, slimeball of a traitor who was also one of your closest lieutenants for a time. You can’t help but wonder if you could’ve kept his loyalty and saved him from his fate.

You head down the stairs to the lower church, intent on finding a deserted nook or corner where you can pray in relative peace.

A skeleton crew of priests greet you as you pass, and you use the opportunity to ask for directions, explaining that you would greatly appreciate a bit of privacy.

One of the younger priests looks like he wants to say something, but is interrupted by a far older priest who solemnly directs you to the space requested.

Your mother, bless her, was a devout Methodist who made a point of dragging you to church every single Sunday, without fail. In contrast, your father couldn’t have given less of a shit about religion and enjoyed sleeping in extra-late to spite her. Can’t give him too much grief for that though, as soon as you were old enough to start making your own decisions, your church attendance plummeted to the holidays exclusively.

Even still, old habits are tough to break. The long-unspoken words are still etched in the annals of your memory, and leap to the forefront of your mind when you kneel, close your eyes, and clasp your hands together.

It might be a little pretentious or heretical, but you always made an effort to have your prayers be more of a conversation than a demand or request.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS5Zf5NYseo

> “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.”

Your voice is quiet, more of a whisper than anything else.

> “It’s been quite a while, Lord. I can’t even remember the last time that we spoke."

Despite yourself, you can’t help but feel the slightest bit foolish that you’re doing this.

> “For the longest time, I used to think that prayer was a waste of my time. That the time spent doing so would be better spent actually tackling the problem at hand. As you can most likely tell, I’m still not convinced that it’ll work. But now, I’m not as certain that it won’t work. You may be real, and you may be listening, but plenty of folks know of issues that are within their power to solve and do nothing about it. I wish I could get mad at you for that, but that’s on them, not you.”

You take a moment to steady your emotions and continue.

> “It’s humbling, y’know? The certain knowledge that there are things which outclass you in every meaningful way. And yeah, I know that time and death and other such concepts exist. But I’m talking about actual beings; that matter how hard you try, you’ll never match up to even an iota of their power. And I’m not talking about Superman.”
>>
File: Martys.jpg (117 KB, 800x530)
117 KB
117 KB JPG
>>5642711

You’re forced to pause and marshal your own thoughts before you’re lost in their intensity.

> “I’ve seen evil with my own eyes. And not just of the human variety. The knowledge that some kind of unseen evil could be lurking in the shadows to harm everyone and everything I care about? Put plainly, it terrifies me. That fear is the biggest reason as to why we’re talking; I know that it’s selfish, but I also figure that it’ll stack up as the least of my sins. And if it even gives a scrap of a chance of keeping the people I care about safe; well, then it’d have been been worth swallowing my damned pride. Uh, sorry for the cursing; it’s a bad habit of mine.”

> “I did my best to stay on the straight and narrow, I really did, but life had other plans for me. And I’m not sure that I’m cut out for anything else. So, do what you gotta with me, but there are some things I need to get off my chest first. Jack is the main reason I’m not six feet under in a potters field, in lockup, or doing far worse things in the name of profit. I wouldn’t go so far as to call him my moral compass, but he’s been a light shining in the darkness. I know that suicide is a mortal sin, but I’d like for you to make an exception in his case. For starters, besides the fact that he’s already suffered his natural death, he simply wishes to be put to rest. I trust that you’re wise enough to know the difference. Lord, please, do what you can to help him. Because it’s going to happen. Not today, or next week, or next month. It will, no matter what I need to do to see it come to pass.”

>” Lord, I’d owe you a solid if you could take care of my friend Gaius. He’s had a rough life, and a rougher death. He may not be a believer, but he was a good and faithful man in his own way. In the end, that’s all that truly matters. We should all strive to be so faithful to our beliefs.”

You clear your throat to ward off any chances of voice beginning to choke.

> “Lord, please keep my soldiers safe. They trust me enough to fly my banner and carry out my orders, and I don’t think I could handle it if I lost them. Some of them may be bad men. But those that they’ve fought are far worse, and such acts were necessary to prevent further bloodshed from ruining innocent lives. It may fly in the face of your commandments, but standing by and doing nothing will never be an option. If I need to be the one to shoulder the burden of their misdeeds, then so be it. So please, just watch their backs.”

Your tone takes on a steely edge, one tinged heavily by regret.

> “And Lord? I hope that you’re taking good care of Armstrong, Burns, Owens, Roberts, Kim, Clark, Tanner, Thompson, Young, Richards, Jimenez, and Green. Otherwise, we’re going to be having some serious words when I kick the bucket, Father of All Creation or not. They were heroes, and had better be treated as such.”
>>
>>5642712

The strength in your voice fades and is replaced primarily by a bitter homesickness.

> “I know that I’ve already asked for a lot, but please watch over my folks; even the old man, mean bastard that he is. I doubt that they even think about me anymore, but I just want them to be happy. Sometimes I wish that I could pay them a visit, let them know that I’m still alive, but maybe all I’d accomplish is letting them down one last time. So, please do what you can for those that I care about. And even if you can’t or won’t, well…then thanks. For listening.”

You rise back to your feet and furiously rub at your eyes to dry the wetness; not that you were crying or anything, the priests must not dust this place all that often.

Upon entering the Imperial Room, your first thought is that it resembles a shrine more than anything else; dedicated to the long-lost Romanov lineage. You’d hesitate to call it gaudy, but it’s definitely much less spartan than you had imagined.

Still, you can understand the rationale; this is a place in which Russian history (if not the world’s) was changed forever.

You’re no monarchist, and can readily admit from your own halting knowledge that Tsar Nicholas was an imperfect man in a multitude of ways. Maybe he deserved to be deposed and suffer the same consequences that he subjected his people to for his entire reign.

But maybe he didn’t.

And you may be a coldhearted bastard at times, but there are lines in the sand that you will never cross; shooting and bayoneting an entire family for the sake of political expediency is far beyond the pale. Even when you took Venezuela in a revolution of your own, you stayed your hand from striking down Pedraza, despite how much you yearned to do so.

That is what makes you different. Not the temptation, simply the will to keep such vicious urges in check.

Once you finish lighting a small amount of the incense to symbolize purification, you quietly leave the altar. Part of you had wanted to try and speak with the long-departed Tsar, but it’d be best to just leave him in peace. Lord knows that you’d be pissed if somebody paid a visit to your execution site and tried to pester you with inane questions.

Before you depart, you flag down one of the priests and explain in halting Russian that you’d like him to say a prayer and bless you. Might as well, seeing that you’re already here and all.

He smiles, and merely places his hand on your shoulder.

Despite fumbling the greeting a bit, you can tell that he appreciates your earnest effort if nothing else.

“Mы блaгocлoвляeм тeбя, o Bceвышний Бoг и Mилocepдный Гocпoдь, кoтopый coвepшaeт для нac вeликиe и тaинcтвeнныe дeяния, cлaвныe, чyдecныe и бecчиcлeнныe; кoтopый дaeт нaм coн кaк oтдых oт нaших нeмoщи и кaк oтдых для нaших тeл, yтoмлeнных paбoтoй. You follow along as best you can, but he speaks pretty quick. Roughly translated to English, the prayer was:

“We bless you, O Most High God and Merciful Lord, who performs for us great and mysterious deeds, glorious, wonderful and countless; who gives us sleep as a rest from our infirmities and as a rest for our bodies, weary with work. We thank you that you did not destroy us for our sins, but in your love for humanity you resurrected us when we were lying in despair so that we could glorify Your Greatness. We pray your infinite goodness to enlighten the eyes of our mind and awaken our minds from the heavy sleep of idleness; open our mouths and fill them with Your praise, so that we may incessantly sing and confess You, who is God, glorified in all and through all, the eternal Father, the Only Begotten Son and the all-holy, and the good, and the life-giving Spirit: now and ever, and forever and ever.
Amen.”

You thank the priest and leave him to his duties; when you check your watch, you realize that several hours have passed since you've entered the church. Guess you may have been in pretty deep thought at a few points.

As you go to leave, you make a small donation to the charity box as thanks for humoring your presence. You’ve never been a deeply spiritual person, but you’ve enjoyed this experience.

Outside, the Set-Mobile picks you up for a group sojourn to your next local destination; the opera.

Ever connected, Set worked his magic to score some private box tickets to the Yekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. If he’s not telling, you don’t plan on asking how.

Theatre has never really been your cup of tea, but Jack goes nuts for this stuff; you’ll go along with it for his sake.

Besides, you might just enjoy yourself.

So, what show are you planning to attend?

> War and Peace. A legendarily long recounting of the French invasion of Russia. Hopefully it’s got some decent war scenes that’ll keep your interest.

> Don Quixote. A classic tale of a knight in an age when chivalry is long gone. Its humor ought to be right up your alley.

> Rigoletto. A tragedy centered around its hunch-backed jester of a protagonist. Might be a tad depressing, but how bad could it be?

> The Queen of Spades. A cautionary tale about the dangers of gambling and obsession. Sounds like a decently thrilling story, especially for an opera.

> Peter the Great. An epic tale about the life and victories of the aforementioned Tsar. Sort of a rags-to-riches style story, but without the rags part.

Alright, Don Quixote it is. I'm going to call it a little early tonight, anons; the next update is going to take me quite a while to write, and I want to leave a long window of time for the next vote. It is arguably quite important and I'd prefer to get a healthy consensus.

Back in Italy, you uncovered Intergang intelligence pointing to a facility in the Siberian wilderness referred to internally as Site Omega.

Aside from the coordinates, the only real actionable data at your disposal is that it seems to be a major transit point for supplying Intergang with exotic hardware, like the carbine you stole.

Seeing as how you're already deep in the Urals, would you like to make a detour and make sacking it your last hurrah for the vacation?

> Yes, raid the facility. It may be risky, but this is an unprecedented opportunity to cripple Intergang where it hurts and potentially secure a cutting-edge stockpile of hardware for the Steel Wolves.

> No, do not raid the facility. You've only got one chance at this; it'd be best to return at a later date when you've got better odds and greater forces.

Should've mentioned, this vote is open until our session Friday at 5:00 PM EST.

As always, thanks for playing!

By the by out of the interlude ideas proposed, I'm leaning towards an Intergang-themed one; feels like there's a fair bit of unexplored territory there that'd be fun to write.

Glad to see that this quest is still ongoing, and its great to see so many people enjoying something like this.

I have a few questions and recommendations that perhaps some anons can join in on or answer. How big is the Steel Wolves organization? There were several references to it being able to help in overthrowing the Venezuelean government, but not the actual size.

Secondly, arming/equipment and funding. Where are we/they going to get money from? The Venezuelan government? Mercenary work? What is the minimum equipment and training they are going to have before being field ready? With Isaac and Darius they went through relatively a lot of training in order to join on the Venezuelan expedition. And are they going to have a minimum magical training or magi-tech equipment to supplement traditional small-arms tactics?

Finally are there even enough DC characters to keep everything going? I read a anon's post saying that there have been a lot of DC named characters getting jobbed by Sean.

Apologies if its a bit too number heavy. I would love to have a organization with the skills or group tactics to be able to fight toe-to-toe with the Court of Owls footsoldiers, or hell even crush the League of Shadows mooks. It would be even cool if we get a group of three or four that could dumpster Bane.

An excellent series of questions, anon. I shall attempt to answer them as best I can before I retire for the evening.

> How big is the Steel Wolves organization? There were several references to it being able to help in overthrowing the Venezuelean government, but not the actual size.

Technically, the Steel Wolves didn't knock over the Venezuelan government, that was when it was still ostensibly the Grand Liberators. The Steel Wolves emerged in the aftermath of your glorious victory. As you can imagine, years of brutal insurgency and fear of painful death can wear anybody down; especially with the prospect of peace at hand. As such, the bulk of your wayward band of rebels was happy to collect their massive payout and retire to enjoy it. However, a few hardliners stayed in the ranks, either out of a sense of loyalty, greed, desperation, bloodlust, or simply lacking anything better to do.

You’ve only got a dozen veterans with you, and they’ll most likely form the nucleus of your initial NCO corps.

I’ll rule that 6 of them are former Jungle Rats, 4 are ex-cartel hitters, and remaining pair are former communist guerrillas.

That number isn’t counting your lieutenants of course, who have been cleared to conduct special operations alongside the regular military. Officially, it’s a way to build cohesion in case you need to work together with the Venezuelan military in the future; unofficially, it’s a way for your lieutenants to keep the men combat-ready and potentially headhunt any bright sparks from the general forces.

When you left Venezuela, Madcap (Isaac’s chosen codename) and Bayonet (Darius’ chosen codename) came back with you to the US; both of whom are busy chasing down whatever spare leads Gremlin can throw their way.

Bayonet is focused primarily on recruiting ex-military and reserve personnel that are in need of a more lucrative career path, whereas Madcap is focusing more on recruiting street-level muscle that prove themselves to be a cut above the regular knuckleheads that comprise the bulk of gang membership.

The success of these endeavors will be determined when you’ve ultimately concluded your dealings with Jack.

> Where are we/they going to get money from? The Venezuelan government? Mercenary work? What is the minimum equipment and training they are going to have before being field ready? In terms of training, I imagine that’d be determined by what operational role they would play. If I recall correctly, you previously trained your men as generalists rather than risk overspecializing; whether or not you continue this doctrine in the future has yet to be determined. That’d require data that you just don’t have at the moment. Magical stuff will most likely not play a factor until you’ve entrenched yourself a bit more firmly.

As for your finances; thanks to the fact that your group essentially spearheaded the operation that dismantled the regime, and managed to secure some high-value leverage that was played quite well, you were able to strike a hell of a bargain with the Triumvirate.

Basically, you got:
- Exclusive basing rights to Blanquilla, a Caribbean island far enough away from Venezuela that ensure general autonomy.
- The contents of Pedraza’s vaults. (Which have been looted and distributed to the boys already)
- Funding and logistical support for construction and maintenance of operational facilities.
- Naturalized citizenship for any and all of your future foreign recruits.
- An honorary commission as a Major in the reformed 5th Jungle Infantry, with your lieutenants being offered positions as well.
- The opportunity to coordinate war-games with the regular military.

In exchange, the new government received:
- Custody of Pedraza and his cronies, who’ll most likely be tried, found guilty, and summarily executed. (Besides a few dangles that were released to tempt bigger fish into making a play)
- A smooth takeover of the financial institutions and media apparatus.
- A guarantee that the Steel Wolves will be on-call for critical wetwork against enemies of the state. (Will necessitate a unanimous approval by the ruling Triumvirate.)
- A live, televised interview where you publicly endorse the junta. (You still owe them this at some point by the way. Yes, you will in fact be expected to spout propaganda, but that’s just the news in general anyhow.)

As of now, the Junta is footing the bill for the initial construction and maintenance of your base, but it’ll still be up to you to handle matters like payroll and other assorted expenses on your own. I had assumed mercenary work would inevitably become the bread and butter, besides whatever liquidation jobs the Triumvirate push your way.

I’m planning on offering a pretty diverse range of options to generate funds, depending on how dirty you’re willing to get.
>>
>>5648663

Consider the following options, which are by no means exhaustive:
- Want to provide on-the-ground protection as VIP escorts? That’s an option.
- Want to smuggle military equipment for violent separatist groups? Go for it.
- Want to provide armed backup for insurgent cells looking to make a big push? Have fun.
- Want to be sponsored to hunt down gangsters and root out organized crime the hard way? Won’t make you friends, but it will make you money.
- Want to sabotage critical infrastructure and cause irreparable economic damage? Just don’t get caught.
- Want to ambush and assassinate political figures / dangerous metahumans. So long as it pays well.
- Want to conduct acts of industrial espionage for competing oligarchs? A job’s a job.
- Want to collaborate with unsavory intelligence agencies running deniable ops? Their money is as good as anyone else’s.
- Want to train local militia forces in counter-terror operations? Supply meets demand.
- Want to train insurgents on how to conduct guerrilla campaigns? There’s always a hotzone somewhere.

I’m not going to dictate morality, but mercenary work by nature is typically a dirty business. The nature of the jobs you take, and the type of work that best suits your burgeoning band will be determined on a case-by-case basis; assuming that you go all-in on the mercenary work.

> Finally are there even enough DC characters to keep everything going? I read a anon's post saying that there have been a lot of DC named characters getting jobbed by Sean.

In all fairness, a decent chunk of those characters are B-List at the highest. Probably the heaviest hitter you’ve thrown down with is The General, and he ended up winning the first bout and spiraling into the Suicide Squad shitshow. If I somehow run out of named characters at some point, I’ll probably just make some new ones up.

Don't apologize, anon. I genuinely enjoy being asked questions like this; it means that folks are actively paying attention and are invested in the slapdash plot I've managed to cobble together.

I’d say with some careful planning and a dash of luck, you might just be able to pull this craziness off. I’m warning you now though, I’m not going to pull my punches.

Inevitably you are going to lose someone, that’s just the reality of the work
>>
>>5648665
>I read a anon's post saying that there have been a lot of DC named characters getting jobbed by Sean.
Probably me, I played a quest a while back where we offed so many major characters that it indirectly lead to the quests death.

>I’ll probably just make some new ones up.
I'd prefer if you dude that in advanced and let us off them instead if we so choose to.

With what you've said so far, I'm worried we might end up trying to micro manage too much and lose focus on the story and characters, so if you could add in small details that cover or assuage any concerns in the background so we can focus on the quest instead of a playing firefighter putting out a bunch of small non story fires or problems like worrying constantly about secrecy and money that would help keep things more fun.

The usher doesn’t even give your motley band of reprobates a second look once he checks your tickets and directs you to a spacious private box.

To be fair, they’ve probably seen more eccentric weirdos here before, given that this is an opera house. Both the regular clientele and the stage performers are probably more than a little touched in the head.

Judging from the way that folks are still filing into the theater, you’ve arrived a little early.

In a rare departure from his usual public stoicism, Jack is practically bouncing in his seat from excitement. You smile ruefully to yourself and note that even if this proves to be a total snorefest, it’ll have been worth it to see him in such high spirits. Ultimately, that’s the point of this whole trip, to make a few happy memories before the opportunity permanently slips away.

Thoth seems bored, but the way that he is intently studying the playbill reveals that he’s more invested in this than he’d like to broadcast. Knowing him, he’s probably a huge fan of Miguel Cervantes and Don Quixote; just hope he’s not one of those genre purists who throws a tantrum whenever an adaptation deviates slightly from the path of the original.

Pandion doesn’t seem to have strong opinions either way, but perks up a bit when you idly reference that operas and Greek tragedies tend to share quite a bit in terms of theme. Not to mention the musical sections.

Meanwhile, Set already looks like he’s about to wither away from sheer unadulterated boredom. Much like a teenage delinquent left alone with a box of Chinese fireworks, he’s itching for an excuse to light the fuse and cause a bit of ruckus. You catch his attention and silently mouth a warning that if he does anything to ruin this for Jack, you’re going to beat him to a pulp and feed whatever remains to Nessie. You wink to let him know that you’re mostly just kidding around. Mostly.

In contrast, Bobo seems equally disinterested yet keeps his thoughts on the down-low. To help stave off the encroaching weariness, he smuggled in a flask of vintage liquor. When he notices that you’ve spotted his contraband, he covertly slips it to you as a bribe for your silence. When Jack isn’t looking, you sneak a hefty slug of dutch courage in an attempt to keep the edge off and slide it back his way.

Fortunately, the curtain is pulled up shortly after, and the play begins in earnest with the introduction of the eponymous madman; Don Quixote.

Your favorite character is quickly established as Sancho Panza, the dirty peasant that serves as Don Quixote’s squire and “loyal” traveling companion. What’s not to like; he’s one of the few characters with common sense and knows how to crack a good joke every so often. Watching him get roped into his master’s various misadventures proves to be more entertaining than you had anticipated, and you find yourself being quickly drawn into the story,

It helps that Sancho kinda reminds you of yourself in a few ways; of course, if anyone else had made that comparison, you probably would have to kick their ass for the implied insult. In that vein, you can’t help but visualize the parts that your pals would be best suited to play.

Jack would be an excellent fit as the titular Don Quixote. Given his status as your erstwhile mentor and boss, it works far too well; not to mention the fact that he can be quite old-fashioned in manner and belief. If he were a bit less lucid and prone to tilting at windmills, you could see it.

As for Set, he could be a perfect stand-in for The Duke; one of the malicious pranksters that plagues Don Quixote in the latter half of the play. Give him some appropriately garish clothing and a script, and you could have a real production going.

Thoth and Bobo would fit in well as the village priest and barber respectively. The priest’s bookish yet quietly judgmental nature fits Thoth to a tee, while the barber’s healthy skepticism tempered with a hint of idealism would be ideal for Bobo.

In Pandion’s case it’s a bit of a stretch, but he could pull off a mean Sansón Carrasco; occasional friend and rival to Don Quixote. Between his martial talent and bouts of irregular arrogance, he could pull it off with aplomb.

Thanks your engrossment in the story and the performance, the time practically flies by and you’re taken off-guard by the dour lines signaling the final lines of the play;

Here lies the noble fearless knight,Whose valor rose to such a height; When Death at last did strike him down,His was the victory and renown. He reck’d the world of little prize,And was a bugbear in men’s eyes; But had the fortune in his ageTo live a fool and die a sage.

With that, the curtain falls to a close as Jack leaps to his feet and gives the theater company a standing ovation.

Your own applause is considerably more muted in comparison to your erstwhile mentor, whereas Set gives only the tiniest of golf claps.

Overall, you enjoyed the play even if the ending leaves something of a bitter taste in your mouth. Having it all end on the depressingly anticlimactic note of Don Quixote renouncing all of his previous beliefs in chivalric virtue and then dying feels like a mean-spirited jab by a personally spurned author.

Still, perhaps there’s a hidden morsel of truth hidden amongst all of the cynicism and parody; that so long as there is a single dedicated adherent to a long-abandoned tradition or belief, then it can never truly die.

That even if a way of life is ridiculous on its outside, perhaps there may be something to be gained by standing by it nonetheless. Considering the fact that Don Quixote dies right after he succumbs to outside pressures, perhaps there’s some commentary there as well.

Regardless, you ended up enjoying yourself far more than you had anticipated; opera always seems like a perennially snobbish activity favored by the sliver-spoon elite that’d sooner die than share a venue with a hick like you. Guess you’ll have to re-evaluate your opinions a bit.

And you’ll have plenty of time for that; the drive to Vladivostok will take the better part of a week, and marks the final landmark on your coast-to-coast journey.

Part of you wants to hit that Intergang stronghold in Siberia, but that’d be left for when you’ve got a better foundation under your feet when it comes to your burgeoning military company.

Plus, you’ve had enough excitement to last for a long while, better to keep things low-key and enjoy the quiet moments.

Speaking of which, with whom would you like to hang out with on the road to this last leg of your whirlwind holiday?

> Bobo. Despite your various and sundry flaws, Bobo’s been a solid ally ever since you were introduced at the Oblivion Bar; perhaps he has more wisdom to share with you?

> Pandion. He’ll be confined in the Claw once again soon, a factoid which would definitely be bumming you out if you were in his position. He’ll probably appreciate the company.

Although with Set, I'm sure we can start a little Mob war between two very well armed criminal gangs.

You decide to spend a bit more time getting to know Bobo. He’s been a decent font of advice and guidance, even in spite of his vocal distaste for your criminal endeavors. It’s one of the many reasons why you keep the nastier details about your recent operations to yourself.

> “Hey there, Bobo. Feels like it’s been a lifetime since we started this roadtrip, how’ve you liked it? I know we can get into the odd scrape now and then, but I think it’s been for a good cause.”

Like many of the times you’ve been in close proximity, he practically reeks of cheap whiskey; a side effect of his near-limitless supply of booze.

“It’s been something, that’s for sure. The company has been welcome, but you really can’t help yourself, can you? Always have to be rushing into the next fight.”

It’s an innocuous enough statement, but the way Bobo says it kinda irritates you; like you’re some punk kid stumbling into things way over his head.

> “I don’t rush into anything, I’ve always got a pl-“

“That’s not what I meant, and you know it!”

His outburst isn’t quite a yell, but far louder than the situation warrants. Bobo looks a little apologetic for the loudness, but it is quickly replaced by a steely determination.

He studies you for a long moment and lets out a deep sigh.

“You’ve got talent, Sean; the kind that people can and will kill for. I don’t think you realize just how badly you would frighten people if they saw you in action and didn’t know you the real you. I just don’t want to see you in prison for the rest of your life, or worse.”

A memory flashes into your mind of your imprisonment at FCI Fairton, followed by another memory of your time in Belle Reve.

You’ll never be pressed into government custody again, they’re gonna have to kill you first.

Bobo can probably see as much in your eyes, since he lets you off the hook when you offer a weak attempt at changing the subject.

> “We’ve spent a lot of time talking about me, Bobo. Care to even the score a bit and complain about your life for a change?”

“Eh, suit yourself. It’s nothing special.”

He cracks open another beer and takes a deep swig before unleashing a truly foul belch.

“A long time ago, I was just another chimp in the jungle until I was captured and sold to this carnival sideshow. The ringmaster figured that the customers would get a nice long laugh out of seeing a monkey detective, so I was dressed and trained to look the part. At the time, I didn’t really mind it all that much; no predators, no worries, an easy enough existence. We traveled all over the world, and eventually found ourselves in the Caribbean. A buddy of mine, this old war-dog by the name of Max ended up dragging me along on one of his harebrained schemes; one thing led to another, and I ended up falling into the Fountain of Youth."

"That’s why I can speak with Nessie, and humans like you. After that, the whole carnival idea lost its appeal pretty quick. Doing tricks for an audience that you outclass mentally is an exercise in futility. So, I left and tried my hand as running my own detective agency, As you may have guessed, it didn’t really end up going the way I had hoped.

I did damn good work, but I was never able to turn any real profit.”

> “Why? Money problems or something?”

“You’re half-right. Turns out that my clients figured out real quick that they could just stiff me out of my payment. And since I’m not a human being, no court or lawyer was interested in ever bringing the hammer down whenever somebody decided to skip the bill.”

A familiar bitterness begins to creep into Bobo’s tone, the kind you feel in the dead of night when pondering what could have been.

“After all, I’m just some chimp in a suit; a gimmick that nobody finds funny anymore. So, ever since I had to close shop, I’ve mostly just spent my days at the Oblivion Bar and letting the time pass me by. Take it from a washed-up nobody like me; you might be riding high right now, but life has a way of knocking you down and never letting you forget it. You’re young, you’re smart, and you’ve got a decent head on your shoulders when you’re not rushing into things you don’t understand.

Do what you gotta do to help Jack, then try and live a normal life.”

Another brief flash of anger passes through you when he casually writes off all of your accomplishments yet again.

You know objectively that he’s not aiming to offend you, and yet you can’t help but be hurt all the same.

How do you respond to Bobo’s advice?

> Retort that crawling into a bottle doesn’t seem like a viable solution either, and yet he shows no sign of stopping. It may come off as callous, but it may help to jar him out of his own funk.

> Point out that the only reason you’d even have the luxury of going straight would be because of getting your hands dirty. Society at large having an issue with the way you conduct business doesn’t mean a goddamned thing in your books.

> Encourage him to consider getting back in the saddle. Maybe if he found a human partner or something, he could give the detective agency a second chance again.

> Remind him that you’ve attempted to work within the bounds of the system before, and that it’s always backfired in your face. Ever since you were a kid, you’ve seen good people with normal lives get chewed up and spat out; that’s not gonna happen to you again.

> Calm yourself and accept it as impractical but well-intentioned counsel. You couldn’t possibly disagree more with his argument, but you respect him for telling it to you straight.

> Be blunt but honest; you can’t foresee any chance of that ever happening. Even if you could make a fresh start somewhere, you’d probably end up falling back into the same patterns.

> Other?

>Ever heard the song Tubthumping? Life only keeps you down if you let it. Besides, I was almost that same washed-up nobody before Jack pulled me off the street, and it'd be a damn shame to throw a chance like that away. You're still alive Bobo. And whether you're willing to accept it or not, you have friends who are willing to help you out at your lowest. If you need money, I can spot you, but by God do not let the flame of passion ever die within you.

>Also maybe ask him if he has any recommendations for discrete therapists. So we can work on not having a psychotic break and monologue like a villain in front of someone again.

Alright, that's an excellent success. It would appear that you have a potential future as a motivational speaker.

Y'know, so long as that motivation involves fighting and / or magic.

It's gonna take me a long while to prep the next update, so let’s call it here for tonight.

Seeing as Vladivostok will be the finale of the roadtrip, I’m going to do something a little special. In lieu of presenting a bunch of local options, I leave it entirely in your hands to brainstorm something meaningful / stupidly fun / memorable.

Until our next session on Wednesday at 5:00 PM EST, that vote will be open.

If for whatever reason nobody has any ideas / no clear victor emerges, I’ll open the Wednesday session with a list of options to choose from and we’ll hash it out from there. As always, thanks for playing and I hope to see you all next time!

So, how would you like to spend the last stop on your vacation?

Alright Bobo, since you're throwing yourself a pity party allow me to crash it. You are so much smarter than me, but goddamn you are retarded sometimes.

This is what I'm gonna do for you. First I'm gonna talk to a buddy a mine here in the Venezuelan government. What he is going to do is get you a name and address and citizenship according to the Venezuelan government. I'll get you a place close to mine and I'll put up the cash. Shouldn't be hard, they owe me. And if not I've got the fucking cash to do it.

Secondly, I'm going to get a lawyer. A good one, a good international lawyer. And what he's going to do is get you dual citizenship in the United States, especially in Gotham. Should be easy considering for all intents and purposes you are basically a full legal sovereign citizen of a foreign nation. You can even spin it saying that you are a political refugee fleeing the Maduro regime because of genetic experimentation. I don't know that shit, i'll let the lawyer handle it.

Now i'll do all of this for free. If you feel that weird gross feeling shit where you don't like accepting gifts because of pride consider it an interest free loan paid off in cash until services rendered. In return regardless of what happens you turn that big freak brain of yours to helping me clean up Gotham. I'm talking gameplans on how to go, block by block, fixing neighborhoods. I'm talking what business we can open to make/wash money from me 'liberating' people from their mortal coils with extreme prejudice.

And i'm not going to let you say no. Because you are my friend Bobo. And this is what friends do. And its one of the big problems of smart people that they believe their intelligence is the supreme omni-tool that can fix all their problems and that they don't need help with anything. Well tough shit, no one-man is an army. And the second I forgot that I had a bomb implanted in my head and used as a slave.

So dig deep, grab yourself a bigger pair of balls, and get absolutely shit faced with us cause the rest of your life is calling and its gonna be fucking great. And next time when you need help just ask. Could have saved yourself years of heartache with a 5 minute heart to heart with a good friend.

>>
>>5651379
Nice writefagging anon, too monologgy and corny for my tastes but it touches on some good character notes. I liked that detail that, for all of his intelligence, Bobo is being extremely stupid about this in Sean's eyes. If he had told him sooner then he'd have tried to help Bobo much earlier. That last line too, he has friends that are willing to help him but prefers to sulk to himself instead. "See? Problem solved. It's only gonna take me like what? A couple of days? A week tops."

>>
>>5652568

To be honest, I was kind of word-vomiting/stream of conscious there and lacked the patience for brevity. What I wanted to imply was that he investigate gotham for legitimate businesses we could create that we could sometimes use for money laundering. If he didn't want to get involved in our monkey business then we could set up businesses that he would be involved in to help provide good paying jobs for people. Not everyone Darius and Isaac find are going to be cut out for shooting/risking their lives.

>>5652596
>writefaggotry
I agree with you, but it was mostly stream of consciousness stuff that I was doing during a work break. I wanted to convey that Sean was a guy who genuinely wants to do good for his friends and is extremely loyal and also tie it into some world-building for our character. Honestly Sean has 4 different identities, runs a mercenary organization, is trying to help a friend kill himself, quasi-reforming 2 egyptian gods, and is an ex-con. Man needs to start delegating.

Howdy anons,

As such, I'm regrettably going to have to postpone our session today until Friday; need the extra time to actually put pen to paper.

I swear, if I ever meet the man who developed the concept of mandatory overtime, I just hope that the prison library computer doesn't block 4chan.

Anyhow, your patience is greatly appreciated as always.
