Despite it all, you are TOMOE, former servant of a Shinigami and current stranger in a strange land. It keeps getting stranger still with each passing hour.

>Investigate the walls of masks closer
Masks of all different shapes, sizes, patterns, and colors. Once. Now they're dulled and weathered by the musty catacombs, and many spots lie vacant to expose the skull beneath. Seems not all dead have the energy to get up and prance about on this night of the Danse Macabre.
You make an educated guess that they must be dedicated to people of the past, whether that be a day ago or a thousand. Given that none here bear anything much worth taking, some clearly having been stripped of jewels or precious metals, grave robbers must make it a hobby to come down here for a bit of looting. With the dead awake tonight, they'll likely have a bone to pick with anyone too full of life skulking around. Best to tread carefully.

The passages Here and There still stand where they were, dimly lit by flameless lanterns.
Over Here, more walls of masks that continue on into flickering light and then utter darkness. The masks become more and more absent the further you look, until only bone, dust, and web remains.
Over There, a T-junction lies just beyond a fittingly macabre muraled archway. Snug in the middle of both paths lies a bronzed plaque, though it's a bit too dark and a bit too far to make out much from where you stand.

Helga, your vampiric historian of a companion, seems to be fiddling with a strange device. Some sort of tube with a hand crank attached to the side, as well as a glass bulb fitted on one end. She turns the crank with some effort, but seemingly in vain.

"Bloody thing... Bah, the one time you'd be useful."

"This? It's an electric torch, meant to 'shine darkness as bright as day,' but it's more like an electric paperweight if you ask me! I acquired it some months back on my travels, for novelty you know, and I've never had much use for it. But given that you don't have the same eye for night as I do, I figured it might come in handy. I can't believe that tinkerer gypped me..."

Helga gives the crank a few more turns, the torch's insides whirring, but no light comes from the bulb. With an exasperated groan the vampire merely frowns at it with a glare, like she were threatening the device to work with her eyes.

Something about the torch brings an amusing thought, but you shuffle it away for one more helpful. The Halfling you've been staying with, Emery, is quite the tinkerer himself. Having watched and sometimes helped with working on his own devices, you wonder if you could see what the issue is... Though tinkering is a lengthy process, and this night won't last forever. Time may be better spent elsewhere while the dead still dance the streets.

Especially when a Shinigami's wrath is breathing down your neck.

>Try to fix the electric torch
Helga agrees to hand you the torch so you can look it over, having had quite enough of the device herself. Your initial testing of cranking the level super hard are met with the same results the vampire had, little more than the whirring of the crank itself. Though not in your prime anymore, you still have some strength to be reckoned with.

"I assure you this is no issue of arm. Vampires are host to an assortment of abilities due to our unlife, one of which being supernatural strength. Don't be fooled by my elegant form, but I'm likely stronger than you are!"

Bringing it a bit closer to your ear, you can hear that though the crank turns it doesn't sound connected to anything else. Thankfully a quick shake and a test of heft confirm that it's more than an empty shell. After a bit of searching you find that the bottom is home to a cap you screw off to get at the insides. With the dim light making sight a chore, Helga takes a look as well.

Together you both find that the crank had simply thrown the band connecting it to what must the the source of the torch's power, and with the help of Helga's nimble fingers set it back into place. The vampire claps as it glows to life with a few turns, illuminating your path forwards!

"What a relief! I suppose that'll teach me to distrust people based off the pointedness of their ears."

>Go There
With the way now properly lit, though still needing a few cranks every now and then, you approach the junction with the plaque. Shining your torch on the dull brass you see it must be a sign of sorts, though in a language you don't understand. Thankfully, Helga is here to assist.

"It seems we've come to a section of mausoleums. To the right- oh! I recognize the House of L'Abeille. First among the Bedelians from the Castle Coast, quite famous for monster slaying these days. And to the left... Hm, seems this one is sealed. The House of Greymond. Strange they'd be buried here, I figured they were of Llewenic descent. Unless this is an exceptionally old site..."

Both paths climb upwards on a shallow incline, a decent indicator they may be closer to the exit of the catacombs.

Greymond... That's the name of the assassinated noble you came across, the one the authorities assumed you were the murderer of. On a night like tonight, it may be worth investigating if you want to clear your name. Or at the very least, uncover what really happened that night.
Stepping upwards through the narrow corridor, other paths branching off of this one, you come to the stone slab doors of the crypt. Helga was right, the tomb is sealed and marked off with tape.

"It figures the Ophelian Guard would be the ones to close it off. Though I don't remember ever hearing of Prince Arthur's interment into these ground... Or much of anything after the body was found for that matter. Is it strange to you that a matter like this would be so hushed?"

On the other side of the door you can hear shuffling and bickering, as well as the occasional bump on the stone from within. Seems the buried dead aren't very pleased with being locked away in the dark. There's a festival to enjoy after all.

>Press your ear to the door and listen
Voices humming with an otherworldly echo, an effect you know to be caused by spirits speaking through two mouths at once. One spiritual and one physical. Very common when a phantom finds itself possessing a body, either living or dead, though in a language you don't understand. Helga puts her ear to the door as well, humming at the words on the other side.

"Southern Llewenic, so I was right! And there sounds to be about three to five in there. Give me a moment, I'll try to translate..."

"This is outrageous! Those damned upstarts can't keep us down here for eternity, this was our land! How many years has it been since we've seen the streets?"
"Too many, I'll say. I almost dread to see what's become of the castle now..."
"That's right, too many! Yet not enough for this bloody door to crumble into dust."

Another thump comes from the inside of the crypt, causing you and Helga to take a step back. From being so close to it however, you could feel a magical presence surrounding the stones of the tomb. A ward against undeath, keeping any not alive from disturbing the structure and security of the stones.

>Speak through the door in the Common tongue. Surely they understand?
You try to call out to the dead within, resulting in some muffled confusion on the other side.

"Someone's out there? What did they say?"
"Hm, sounds like one of the modern tongues. Certainly not Etiennais, thank goodness."
"Aleister, get over here and translate for us!"
"Alright, alright, a moment please... Hm? That accent..."

>Try to open the Greymond Crypt
You tear away the yellow barriers from the crypt door before pushing against the stone. Helga initially tries to assist, but due to the ward she makes no progress. Through what might you still have, you open the musty old tomb with great effort. The first face to greet you, or mask rather, smells heavily of preservative fluids and ancient perfumes.

"Oh my that's bright, but... In all my stars, is that really you? The ronin Tomoe, you haven't aged a day! And you've even brought along- Oh, no, that's a new face. But still, what a chance meeting!"

Helga tilts her head at the undead noble, whispering beside you

"You know the late King Greymond? How in the world..."

Even after squinting and shining the light on whatever part of him you may recognize, you can safely say you have no idea who this is. Yet it seems that he knows you.

>Introduce yourself, you're quite sure you've never met
>Also introduce our bloodsucking sidekick, Helga von Blumenthal
"Oh yes, introductions! Please, allow me to show you what I've learned since our last meeting."

King Aleister clears his throat and bows to you. Surprisingly for someone born so far from your home, you can find no fault in etiquette and barely a hint of accent as he continues in your native language.

<I am King Aleister Greymond, the late ruler of New Cauldin and its surrounding territories. Since last we spoke I had made it my mission to assist in the reunification of the Thousand Lostus Isles. I acted as diplomat, mediator, and organizer of many inter-Lotus events! Alas, though I was awarded for my efforts, I was never able to see them come to fruition in my lifetime. It truly is such a shame... but I have no doubts the Isles will come together at last. Perhaps they already have!>

He turns to Helga again, giving her a bow in the continental style instead.

"And guten Abend to you as well, Lady Helga. Angenehm. I have always had much respect for Nibelvolk, it saddens me I hadn't more time to learn your culture as well."

>inform him that he must have us confused with someone else
"Confused? Forgive my saying so, but that simply cannot be! You are Tomoe, are you not? Ashina-no-Tomoe? I had spoken with your husband and son on a visit to Taifuu-shu, though I could see why you wouldn't be present then... But worry not, I have no intentions of reporting you to any, shall we call them, interested parties."

With a small chuckle Aleister takes a second look at you. Even after studying for a moment, he shakes his head.

"This may simply be my mind playing tricks on me, but you look exactly as I remember! Ronin life must still be treating you well enough, hm? If I didn't know any better, I'd say you travelled through time to be standing here now."

>You've been to my home? Could you... tell me how my family was doing then?

>You've been to my home? Could you... tell me how my family was doing then?
Helga shoots you a hesitant yet understanding glance. She'd already warned you about looking into your past too often, but she knows how heavy not knowing can weigh on the heart.

"Oh of course! From what I saw they were doing quite well for themselves, as the governing clan of a province well should. Granted this was in 1827, I've no clue just how long it's been, but I must say your husband was aging quite gracefully! A veritable silver fox, though it seemed that he hadn't taken another wife. Take that as you will.
And your son, what a fine young man he'd become! It was quite clear he'd taken after you and your expertise in battle. Aha, he'd even taken to covering his eyes like you!"

Even as Aleister laughs to himself over the memory, the last piece turns your blood to ice. It could be a simple homage, and you pray it is, but you know better. You know well it's for the same reason you do.

The Corpse-Collector on the Rivers of Blood.

"...Lady Tomoe, are you feeling well? It may simply be the light, but you look near as pale as your companion. Or myself for that matter!"

>Push the thought away, you're fine. You're fine. You're just worrying too much.

>Tell me more about my son. I want to know. I need to know. Right now.
Your hands are on the band of his medal, and they're shaking. Helga puts her cold hands on your arms from behind, trying to offer quick words of comfort, but you barely hear them. You barely even feel her. There's a war going on between you and the waver of desperation in your voice. You're losing.

"A-Ah! What- what is there more to tell, ehm... Your son, Takeru, he had mentioned he was training for something. A grand quest of sorts! I assumed this was something to do with the Kamigi, but it always is in the Northern Isles."

He doesn't understand. He never could. Even with all his years studying your land and its culture, there are things only your people can truly grasp about the gods of the Isles and the Kamigi, the Divine Morality.
Once the Corpse-Collector on the Rivers of Blood had grown irritated and tired of your hesitation, severing your bond of service and damning you to eternity held over the Abyss, she must have sought a new vessel to act as her immortal agent. Proud and spiteful, in her eyes this was only poetic justice for your disobedience. And the will of the Kami is absolute.

Aleister had kept rambling even as his undead relatives plucked your hands away from him, the ringing of horror in your ears starting to wane.

"...e was quite fit as well, I'm sure the girls were hanging off each arm whenever he went into town!"

Helga had stepped between you and them, putting to work her skills in diplomacy and linguistics to ease the tensions that had snapped taut in a moment.

>I need to get to the streets
"He's coming for you? Who? Your son...?"

Helga turns back to you with a look of confusion, matched somewhat by Aleister's own. The two other Greymonds share a different color of unknowing, and quickly seek clarification through the two who speak their language. The vampire and the dead king do their best, putting the two at some ease. The bearded one of the two approaches you with a hand held out to firmly shake.

"I've told them you needed assistance in finding someone," Helga begins, followed up by Aleister.
"And as a friend to the Greymond family, they are more than willing to help! And I must say, it has been some time since we've seen the surface as well."
"But..." Helga pauses a moment only to shake her head at herself. "No, never mind. If you truly believe danger darkens our doorstep, I will trust you."

With a shake of the dead man's hand, you are swiftly --for a corpse-- led back up to the street level. They may have been buried long ago, but the catacombs' layout has remained constant.

-----

The bustle of the streets is filled with dancing dead and both jubilant and terrified living. Masks and costumes are donned, candy is thrown to and fro, lights and decorations haunt every wall. Above it all, the moon and its phantom glow brightly in the night sky, as well as a single red star watching with anticipation.

"Where shall we begin?"

>Sniff for the whereabouts of Llewelyn and Cheriette
That's right, the man with the funny accent and his Oni-like companion. They were fine contenders in the tournament all those months ago, surely their skill would come in handy.
You never did find out where they ended up, but some asking around through your contacts at hand revealed they had been arrested as suspected accomplices following your disappearance from the murder of Prince Arthur. You should have guessed that, really. What you didn't guess is that they were taken in by the Central Watch of Ophelie upon further investigation and are being held in their most secure bastille. La Bastille de la Rose, once used to secure enemy nobles during the times of war, and now reserved for political prisoners, traitors to the crown of Etienne, and unsanctioned practitioners of magic.

-----

Having passed through the the streets by cover of your entourage, constantly checking over your shoulder for the city watch and the shadows nipping at your heels, you arrive a safe distance from the prison. The short tales didn't do it justice.
It's a veritable fortress, shielded on all sides by stone walls and iron wrought fence. Central Watchmen patrol constantly around the interior in their shining plates, with more pairs posted by the single entrance allowed for the Bastille. You can only imagine how many others might be inside.
Spiriting the two to freedom won't be easy, but you've orchestrated a prison break once before. Though, someone else might have an easier time making a stealthy or diplomatic path to your targets.

>Approach as Tomoe
You decide to take the lead on the Bastille Breakout. Subtlety was never your strong suit, and being a wanted criminal means not many guards would be willing to hash things out. Sooner or later, this is going to go loud.
With a brief reconnaissance trip, your gang comes up with a few approaches...

"That crumbling section of the wall," Aleister points out. "There are many guards keeping their eyes on the spot, but if we can get through it there looks to be a straight shot down to the lower levels of the prison. If there were a place to hold the beast of a woman you describe, it would be in the depths."

"And the rooftops of the nearby buildings," Helga gestures to the rising skyline around them, the modern architecture having left the old Bastille behind. "Finding a way from there to the higher levels of the prison would allow an easy trip up to the central spire. If Etienners would keep a Llew, it would be in a trophy case."

Of course, there's always the front door. You'd done it plenty of times during the Division War, the Shinigami's ward against death was hardly ever needed. Again, subtlety was never your strong suit.

>Blitz the crumbling wall
After a quick look at the wall, you estimate that, yeah, you can bust it open. You've still got some strength in you, and your extra cushion could provide both weight and protection as you smash through. Helga doesn't seem too enthused by the lack of finesse, but Aleister gives a thumbs up

"Let's get at those little rebels, Lady Tomoe. Show them what real backbone is!"

With your crew ready to follow your lead, you shrug off your cloak and prepare to charge. In three, two, one...

-----

This is it, the thrill of battle. Oh how you've missed its sweet music of chaos. A drumbeat of stone and boot leather, a chorus of alarmed shouts, and the fire in your blood playing a solo of victory.

Oh yeah. You're so back.
