/qst/ - Quests

The year is 1374 DR. Sixteen years have passed since the Time of Troubles, when the gods were made humble, and forced to wander the Realms as mortals. With the ascension of the mad god Cyric, Prince of Lies, and the recent return of the tyrant god Bane, Lord of Darkness, the future of Faerûn seems increasingly uncertain. It falls to bold individuals who possess an abundance of cunning, might, and determination to shape the future... should they be up to the challenge.

Affixing your weapons to your person, you leave the Hall of the Elders behind, ready for your journey to the Silverwood. There, you intend on informing the Eilistraeans of your most recent triumph and, gods willing, the eventual council vote that will allow them entry into Everlund. That you have gone to such great lengths on the behalf of your people truly astounds you. It is abnormal, or mayhaps even unnatural, for Ilythiiri to help one another for the sake of it.

Does this make you a deviant?

Burying these intrusive thoughts, you commence your journey. A round trip from Everlund to the Silverwood would take a tenday or less, provided you travel at a constant pace. Just as you face the road which leads to the city's southern gate, you recognize that the hexagonal All-Faiths Hall is but a minute away from your current location. True, you've no immediate business with the surfacer gods or their followers, although this does not preclude you from entering regardless.

What will you do?
>The sooner I commence my journey, the better.
>A detour to visit the All-Faiths Hall could not hurt.

You are growing accustomed to stopovers at the All-Faiths Hall. Meandering up the incline which leads to the six shrines dedicated to but a few of the many surfacer gods, you enter. As ever, the place is lively today, with locals and travelers alike setting aside the time to meditate on the precepts of their favored deities and express their devotion through song.

In some ways, you have come to understand why these folk seek a connection with the divine. You cannot deny that Sune and her devotees have altered the trajectory of your life significantly. The Lolthite way of pretending allegiance in exchange for the Spider Queen's fickle favor and the privilege of continued existence seems almost nugatory by compare.

Whose shrine will you approach?
>Lathander, the Morninglord - God of the Renewal, Athleticism, Creativity, and Birth
>Sune, Lady Firehair - Goddess of Passion and Beauty
>Tymora, Our Smiling Lady - Goddess of Victory and Good Fortune
>Oghma, the Patron of Bards - God of Knowledge and Inspiration

Sauntering up to Sune's shrine, you take stock of the newest offerings given over to the goddess. A bouquet of roses and a hand mirror, several new bottles of wine, a painting of Lady Firehair lovingly embracing a young human woman, perchance a famed devotee or a lesser deity. It would appear that Sune is as adored now as she was during your prior visits. Women young and old congregate nearby, exchanging gossip and advice pertaining to their love lives and the finer things in life. A few even regard you warmly as you approach.

What will it be today?
>Mayhaps I could consult her followers for advice regarding my relations with Amaranth.
>There are many deities in the realms. But I am here to declare Sune as the one whom I favor above all others.

why do you guys want to changes gods from dark elf sword princess to passion thot
>>
>>5972424
We've never worshiped Eilistraee, to my knowledge, even if we aided her people. By contrast, we've prayed to Sune several times, and been rewarded with boons, including the rose which helped us sway Emitia and Amaranth when we needed it. Jezyrene is passionate in good and bad ways, and Sune is goddess of both. She's romantic, artistic (at least as far as dance is concerned), and sometimes a little vain. I think she's a good fit.

Also, I like the idea of picking something other than the standard 'good drow' deity option
>>
>>5972424
New you new goddess
>>
>>5972424
First off, Jez doesn't already worship dark elf sword princess goddess. We've always been pretty standoffish to Eilistrae, I don't think Jez has made any god her primary one yet. Making Sune her main one doesn't mean Eilistrae won't have a place in Jez pantheon, just not THE place.
And, Jez is pretty transactional, besides the portfolio being a good fit. Sune has explicitly done something good for her, from her point of view.
Sune also fits the best for Jez character development/future development from where she is right now, I would say.

As you inspect the most recent offerings given over to the Princess of Passion, you ruminate over how frequently you have returned to here of your own volition. You made no such effort to confer with Lolth after it became apparent that you would never rise through the ranks of the clergy, yet here you are again, seeking out the wisdom of the red-haired surfacer goddess. As you have grown accustomed to life in the roofless world, your behavior has grown ever-more perverse, but this newfound dependence on Sune deeply perturbs you.

Without realizing it, you have come to rely on this human power, seeking out her counsel on your adventures and even going so far as to invite her presence into your most intimate affairs. Through your incaution, it would seem that you have inadvertently allowed Sune into your heart and transmogrified into a Sunite as a consequence. You should find the time to familiarize yourself with her creed if you are to become a proper devotee.

Your ruminations are disturbed by a soft cooing in your ear that returns your attention to reality. As if possessed, you are struck by a powerful whim that compels you to reach for the mirror that you purchased together with your kit of makeup. Fishing through your belongings, you retrieve the item and hold its reflective surface to your face, lurching back violently as you notice a drastic alteration to your appearance.

No longer is your hair silver, flecked with yellow. Now, strands of rich carmine flow from your temple to your back.

Seizing a handful of hair, you tug at it, half-expecting it to come tumbling down your shoulders as a wig might. No, this is no wig, nor does it seem to be colored artificially. This is your hair, now 'naturally' red, by Sune's will. It was Tenpenny who said that those with such hair were blessed by the goddess. While the color hardly suits you, it is not so much a fashion statement as it is a reminder of the unusual connection that an Ilythiiri warrior shares with a human deity.

First within and then without, 'Sindiira Torani' has steadily become a wholly distinct individual from Jezyrene Delyl.

Regardless, you did not come here to Sune's shrine for idle soul-searching. Rather, you are here to seek advisement with regards to your relations with the High Sorcerer, Amaranth Cywir. Obviously, you have already learned everything there is to know about relationships in your centuries of experience, although it would nevertheless be prudent to refresh your memory. You join your now fellow Sunites in their spicy bavardage, elaborating on the particulars of your situation. After conferring with one another, they produce their replies.

"You need to sit down together and have a long talk. Show him who you really are, and tell him about your feelings," states a mature woman who is about your age in human years. "Otherwise, it'll all fall apart once the honeymoon is over."

"No, no, no, it's too early for that! Why not write him a poem instead?" Proposes a half-breed girl, who would be about as old as Ilanis. "That way he'll know that he has a special place in your heart!"

"That is simply not enough!" Exclaims a moneyed elderly woman who has aged gracefully. "I know that you're mature enough to be ready for marriage. Don't wait, propose to him! If you like it, you need to put a ring on it!" Her remark provokes convivial uproar from the others, making it difficult to determine whether or not she tells you this in jest. Among Ilythiiri, 'marriage' is little more than political theater that ultimately means little, but over your adventures you have gathered that the surfacers view it as important - holy, even. Accounting for the cultural divide, perchance there is merit to her advice?

All sound suggestions, you reason.
>Hmm, yes. I suppose that I will have to tell him everything eventually, if we are to be together.
>Me, a poet? Why not? Surely it will not prove difficult for one as knowledgeable and experienced as myself.
>Oh, gods! The old woman is right - I need to begin planning our wedding before some whore tries to steal him away from me!
>After some consideration, I have concluded that I am doing everything correctly, and need not change my approach.

People in the Realms are polytheistic and acknowledge all of the gods. Some gods demand total devotion to the exclusion of all others, but they are few, and usually evil. Still, most people will eventually find a favorite deity who is most pertinent to their needs. Even if Sune is Jezyrene's favorite, there's nothing preventing players from also praying to Eilistraee if they feel she really wants to.

Sune is also incredibly popular and substantially stronger than both Eilistraee and Lolth, if voters feel like Jez cares about that kind of thing.
>>

Heh. I was just about to say, are we the first redheaded dark elf of all time?
Anyway, neat. Maybe we'll get some brand new art going by some brave anon.

Also the reference to needing a refresher on relationships, I like the idea that relationships sounds like a college level course in Jez mind, that you can refresh your memory on a few years, decades or centuries after graduation, so to speak

>Hmm, yes. I suppose that I will have to tell him everything eventually, if we are to be together.
>Oh, good gods, I'm really losing it arn't it...
>>
>>5981307
>are we the first redheaded dark elf of all time?

Curiously, no. Drow can be born with hair colored various shades of copper. Like albinism, it is considered an exotic mutation with no particular stigma against it. Young drow may also choose to dye their hair any number of vivid colors. You may now imagine a much younger Jezyrene with neon-green hair ranting to Phaere and Tatherin how she lives in a society.

Allowing your partner privileged access to your jealously guarded thoughts sounds like the height of foolishness, and yet your peers assure you that it will yield benefits. You would never do such a thing otherwise, though the surety of the Sunites is sufficient to convince you. How could counsel from the followers of the goddess of passion and beauty steer you wrong?

Sure in your decision, you depart from the All-Faiths Hall, deliberating over what you will share with Amaranth when next you meet. Mayhaps you will tell him of the innumerable punishments that mother subjected you to, or how memories of past wars haunt you with dreams that leave you restless. Or could you tell him the truth of your identity, and the circumstances around your flight to the surface?

There is time enough for you to give further consideration to the matter. For the moment, you preoccupy yourself with your journey to the Silverwood. You should arrive only a few days later than the Eilistraeans, provided you maintain a good pace. As you recall, there are two routes that lead to the Silverwood's depths.

From the east side, facing the road, should be the most expedient route, although the terrain is more difficult to navigate here. You recall that Willow referred to the land in this direction as a 'thicket,' to indicate that it is densely wooded. Moreover, though you doubt that you would become lost, you are unfamiliar with the path through there. Then there is the west side. Although circling around to go in this direction would add several days to your journey, the way through the forest is more hospitable, and you are more familiar with the route besides.

Whatever you decide, there is ultimately no incorrect choice.
>I will enter the Silverwood from the east. It is the quickest way.
>I am more familiar with the western route, and would go that way instead.

With the city behind you, the dirt road ahead, and the viridian and idyllic Silver Marches all around, you set off for the Silverwood, intent on cutting through its more densely-wooded east-facing region. For days you follow the path unabated, leaving it behind for the shady forest interior. By now you are accustomed to the sensory stimuli of the roofless world, so much so that you worry that you might find yourself out of place should you ever be forced to return to a life in the Underdark. Regardless, the novelty has yet to wear off - subsisting on moss and blind cave eels, breathing stale air, drinking stagnant water... you wonder if you are even capable of returning to such a dismal existence.

Clumsily wending through the shrubs and trees, you quietly lament neglecting the ranger lessons that you had the opportunity to study so many decades ago. Had you a better understanding of the wilds, you most definitely could have cut through this hostile terrain in half the time or less. There was a great deal that you could have learned which you simply refused to, in retrospect. What a petulant child you were.

The land falls death-silent while you awkwardly wade through an ankle-deep stream as the cruel sun prepares to retreat beyond the horizon for the day. Gone are the songs of the flying surface fauna, and scurrying steps of their earthbound kin. Even the wind has come to a halt, leaving the water's murmur alone in its song. Your instincts lead you to conclude that there is something amiss here, although you cannot quite place what.

What will you do?
>I should shroud myself in darkness and foliage for the moment. I could use the time to relax, in any case.
>It would be best if I doubled my pace, regardless of whether or not I am in peril. Willow and the Eilistraeans cannot be more than a day away.

Shadow is your ally. Young Ilythiiri either internalize this truth at an early age or perish before adulthood. Taking care to cover your tracks as you push onward, you sequester yourself away in a patch of thick shrubbery, with a rocky outcrop at your back. Seating yourself on the grassy forest floor, you steady your breathing and drink languidly from your waterskin, observing the stream as its waters gently roll by, which adopts an almost otherworldly quality as the sun's soft twilight is reflected off of its surface.

Your intuition proves correct. A silvery glint in your eye alerts you to the speedy approach of a thing twice your size shaped to resemble a sleek-seeming predator, much like the displacer beast Alantha or Malar himself. But this is no creature of flesh and sinew. It is as though the entirety of its body was wrought from steel - claws, limbs, and all. Perturbingly, it moves with the intention and flexibility of a fully organic being. You have seen golems before, constructs of varying quality and material. But you feel reasonably certain that this is no golem.

Though its body is undeniably of a dense metal, its footsteps are completely inaudible, an affront to all sound logic. As though in determined pursuit, it hurries along, keeping its head low to the ground. Attempting to work out the direction it intends to take, you come to a frightening conclusion. It is tracking you, not by sight, but by scent. Visual concealment will do nothing to prevent it from discovering you.

By your estimation, you have several moments until it has successfully determined your location.
>[Drink Potion of Pass Without Trace] It was judicious of me to purchase this beforehand. I should be able to drink this and slip away, if I am quiet.

Your decision to invest in a potion to evade detection bears fruit. Uncorking the vial, you quaff the flavorless gray liquid and quietly store it away in your backpack such that no trace of your presence will be left behind. Though your body feels much the same as it did moments ago, the effect of the extraordinary concoction is readily apparent. Taking care not to make a sound, you abandon the shroud of greenery and press onward, leaving behind no tracks as you make your way further into the forest's depths.

With your timely escape successful, you peer over your shoulder and observe the metallic creature as it skulks over to your last known position, circling around the outcrop before turning away. Though you cannot access the creature's thoughts, presuming this unnatural entity is even capable of such, it seems as though it has incorrectly deduced that you are elsewhere after losing your scent. Keeping its frame close to the forest floor, it breaks into a soundless sprint, following your trail out of the forest from whence you came.

More than likely, it was Phaere who set that horrid thing upon you. Your eldest sister possesses neither the intellect nor the creativity to employ such a capable hunter. But your younger sister has long held an interest in the surface world and even the planes beyond. Were there any individual who could find an ally in such an anomalous being, it would be her.

Confident that you have eluded the malevolent designs of your siblings for the immediate future, you resume your trek through the woods, intent on rejoining your people before the sun next rises.

We're going to have some opportunities for more character development next thread and much more, which will be here soon.

I can't believe they still haven't figured "it" out yet.

Hope you don't mind a few guesses while this thread gets archived, Greenwood.

Amaranth is actually the father of Illanis and Lael?
Illanis is not actually an elf, but secretly Iallanis, the giant pantheon's goddess of love moonlighting as an elf?

Jezyrene was one of the drow who captured him, and she's simply forgotten, but he's still grappling with it?
>>
>>5996756
Korfel is the father of Illanis, but her real mother is actually Arara, and he was exiled after the story broke?
>>
>>5996823
Why would that affect Amaranth's feelings about Jez, though?
>>
Korfel's dead, not missing, due to some sort of terrible thing he did, probably something to do with why Ilanis and Lael are half-siblings, Amaranth and Arara know what happened, and one or both of them are culpable for murder.
