In an age before recorded history, Man eked out a life bound by blood and tradition across his ancestral homeland of Thulzar.

And in this harsh realm where iron and sinew forged the path to glory, flowed the lifeblood of the Whispering River. It winded through desolate hills and past crumbling ruins, a serpentine ribbon in a land that brooked no weakness.

The dry plains in the south were mostly featureless with rocks, bushes, and crags scattered under a harsh sun.

Being so far south of the Whispering River made you feel uneasy. This was your first excursion outside of the clan's territory, and your nerves were on edge; you couldn't escape the rumors of strange and frightening monsters roaming the area. Still, you had chosen to embark on this voyage, and you were determined not to return empty-handed.

Following the trail eventually took you to a forest edge: the grounds were clear, almost serene, with few trees. It seemed safer than the vast and dense woods that surrounded the clan's lands, you thought.

Despite the arduous day, you couldn't help but feel good about your progress. The sun had just started to set, spreading a warm golden warmth over everything. You took a deep breath, soaking up the pure air and tranquility of the surroundings.

Opening your satchel, you carefully assessed your supplies: dried meat, a waterskin, a weaved blanket, a good length of rope and your father's (loaned) sturdy knife. All in all, enough to keep you going for a week or so.

> Forage the nearby woods: While your rations are still plentiful, supplementing them with berries and fruit would help stretch them for longer.
> Start a fire and rest: Travelling the plains took its toll on you, the thought of giving in to an early rest was quite tempting
> Press onward: With some daylight left, you think you could make it halfway through the woods before dark.

After wearing the traveling cape all day to protect yourself from the sun and rain, you felt a sense of relief as the cool air brushed against your now free skin. You first doubted Dharn's gift, but after a few days wearing it you can't help but feel grateful for his insight. There was a lot still left for you to learn, you thought.

The remainder of the evening was spent scavenging through the woods, which you had learned to do fairly effectively from your fellow hunters. A surprising number of berries and fruits ended up in your bag. This place was truly a boon, especially after several days trekking through arid plains.

These woods quickly took on a different mood at night however, a thick fog covered the ground with streaks of moonlight lighting it up sparingly. Oddly lovely, yet somewhat ominous. You hurriedly set up camp, hungry for a flame to huddle against.

"What a curious thing you are, sleeping so soundly." You woke up instantly, knife in hand. "Oh? Is this curious thing aware enough to recognize danger?" The woman chuckled.

"Who are you?" you dared to ask. "Who am I? Who are you! Ugh, you enter my woods, harvest my fruits, burn my sticks… you're an awfully uncouth creature, do you know that?" The woman's demeanor was both casual and off-putting, and though your arcane senses were not as sharp as Galrick's or Hijon's, you could still sense her unnatural aura. She leaned forward, paying no attention to the knife pointed at her. "Hmm. I see a bow lying next to you. I presume you are some kind of huntress, yes?"

"I am, yes." you responded, unsure of what to make of her yet. "My name is Fhor, daughter of Marik, huntress of clan Grey Owl." You slowly got out of your blanket, still firmly holding on to your father's knife. "Our clan's sacred sheep was found eviscerated by a wild beast, which I've been tracking for five days." Her unblinking eyes were locked on yours. "I-I'm sorry for trespassing in your forest. I will pack up and leave immediately."

You both stood there in silence, the weight of her gaze almost suffocating. But then, her lips curled into a smile. "Ohohoh, now that's interesting!" With a single clap, she continued, "Yes, I will allow you to leave, Fhor the huntress, daughter of Marik. You can keep the fruits, as a gesture of my good will."

As if on cue, a sudden gust of wind swept up the thick layer of fog that had enveloped the forest. Once it cleared, you found yourself standing all alone. The mysterious woman, who had appeared out of nowhere, had vanished into thin air.

> Leave the way you came: Retreading your path and circumventing the forest would make you lose both the beast's tracks and a few days, but you were told to leave and would do so.

After putting out the small fire, you quickly gather your belongings. You hesitate when you come across the fruits in your bag, wondering if you should accept the offer of goodwill. However, you decide to take them with you, as leaving them behind may be seen as a slight.

Your footsteps were swift, your pace sustained, dodging low hanging branches and bushes. Last evening's quaint little forest looked almost unrecognizable, with its trees grown twisted and the ground covered in treacherously dense foliage. However, your focus was sharply elsewhere; having noticed the steps in the woods, you had recognized the stalking of a beast tailing its quarry.

It was clear, you were being hunted.

> Hurry forward: You had the stamina and cunning required to lose the predator further along the path, you only needed to keep the pace.

Only a prey runs.

You found a small clearing and tossed your bag and cape in the middle of it. Carrying only your bow, knife and arrows, you made your way towards the nearby bushes to wait in ambush. Cold sweat rolled down your skin. Your heart was racing, your breast heaving as you wrestled control over your breathing.

Soon enough, a red lynx appeared. Its fur was patchy and weathered, marked with scars that served as a stern warning to anyone who would challenge the seasoned predator. Your plan worked; the lynx went for your bag, trying to roll it over with its heavy paw.

This was your chance.

Arrow notched, you deftly tensioned your bow. Within a moment, the arrow whistled through the clearing, alerting the beast but leaving it no time to react. The lynx hissed in pain, the arrow head having struck it in the front leg. Though wounded, it was not killed.

The creature charged at you, jaws gaping wide. Without time to grab another arrow, you reached for your father's knife.

Ferocious claws and teeth dug into your skin, leaving you in a desperate struggle for survival. You knew that matching the raging lynx with strength was foolish. Even among the hunters of the clan you were smaller than most. Your true advantage was your keen mind; a mind which you leveraged to your advantage.

Through each attack you maneuvered, and though you suffered dire lacerations, you managed to position yourself precisely where you needed to be.

Your father's knife plunged deep into the flank of the red lynx.

A guttural whine escaped the lynx's throat, and it scurried away, leaving behind a trail of burning blood on the ground.

You were lying on the ground, writhing in pain.

A large gash was open across your abdomen. You pressed your hand against it as your blood ran down your flank, to little benefit. Your victory against the red lynx came at too high a cost, you thought, as the coldness began to creep up your limbs.

Your mind wandered to scenes of your youth, your father Marik teaching you how to use a bow, your first kill, the summer you spent in cottarship in Galrick's housestead…

"You are both curious and frustrating, Fhor of clan Grey Owl." The woman's cold voice again, barely reaching you through the pain. "You promise to leave my forest, but you soldier on instead." She scoffed. "Not that I would have let you leave anyway, but your arrogance is insulting."

You tried to crawl backwards, away from her. "I must commend you, however, on besting my sweet boy Suud. For years I have trained him to kill, sending him on hunts across the land." She let out an exasperated sigh, and knelt next to you.

"But it seems Suud still has a lot to learn."

Her cold fingers grazed your stomach, smearing blood along their path. "From you maybe?" Her voice was down to a whisper.

Her tongue left a trail of thick saliva across your abdomen. And as it covered your wounds, an unbearable searing pain took hold over your body, as if salt was being poured against your raw flesh.

"You will survive these wounds, Fhor."

She stood up, her task done. "And if you live through the night, you will survive my sap too. Despite its healing properties, it remains quite poisonous for your kind."

Through the pitch darkness, you could faintly see the figure sleeping on the cot next to yours. Dull blonde hair, sharp features, a lithe build—Galrick was unlike any other clansmen. He was more mature than Kosa or Claro, but a whole lot quieter too. Others played and hunted, but not him. He had, for as long as you remember, been solely invested in the arcane and nothing else. Even his own father confided in you once, that his son felt out of his reach.

You continued to observe him silently, as if to decipher some hidden truth about your sleeping neighbor. What pulled him so intently into study? What was so lacking in this village that he had to leave by right of pilgrimage?

Like most nights, he began to whisper in his sleep. Barely intelligible things, softly spoken. But unlike other nights, he also shook and began to sweat, so much so that you gently nudged him awake.

"Galrick, wake up. You were making sounds—like you were hurting,"

"Nightmares," he muttered, slowly pulling himself out of his blanket. "Sorry to wake you."

"Galrick..." Your gaze lingered on him.

In the still darkness you felt him pull you into an embrace, your slender form fitting against him, filling gaps you weren't aware of. For a suspended moment, the weight of the world seems to lift.

"I'm sorry I pushed you away then, Galrick." You whispered, cradled into his arms. "I…I was scared." You felt your heart racing as intensely as it did during your fight with the red lynx. You brought your hands to your chest, as if to calm the beating.

"Are you still scared, now?" Hearing his voice reminded you of how you missed it, ever since he left. "No, I'm not."

You became aware of his soft touch against your bare skin, his fingers grazing against your waist and stomach.

"Galrick, I—" Interrupting your sentence, you felt his hand traveling downward, under the blanket. Both silent, cuddled against each other, your breathing hitched as his fingers found their way through your unkempt hair.

You have always been confused about why this fabricated memory keeps resurfacing in your mind. Still you find comfort in what never happened; a well rehearsed scenario, like an old home.

Pressing your back harder against him, his fingers slipped inside your entrance, eliciting a gasp. You began moaning quietly as his fingertips weaved deeper inside you, meeting his slow and deliberate movements with the gentle sway of your hips.

Your whole body shook as you finally came undone, tightening around his fingers, panting his name over and over.

The sun was about to reach its zenith, its warm light filtering through the dense tree canopy, waking you up. You were surrounded by ferns and grass, yesterday's clearing where you fought the red lynx now fully overgrown with vegetation.

After dispelling the lingering emotions of your dream, you pulled yourself up, groaning.

The woman's saliva had become sticky and greenish, but it had worked. The now closed scar was the only remaining proof of the mortal blow you suffered the day before. It looked impressive, and was sure to be popular among the hunters of your clan if you ever managed to get back. Still, you remained eager to be rid of the saliva clinging to your skin.

While kneeling in a clear running brook, you vigorously rubbed the hard and sticky sap. You quickly became frustrated at how difficult it was to remove, but it kept at it nonetheless.

As you continued, you noticed that the woods had transformed again. The previous night, they had been twisted and foggy, but now they appeared lush and green; full of life. You wondered if the transformation occurred at nightfall or simply was the whims of the strange woman.

After some time, the sap was completely washed off, revealing the nasty scar on your stomach.

"I can't believe how fantastic yesterday went!" You turned around to find the strange woman sitting on a rock. Suud, her red lynx, was lounging beside her, his yellow eyes fixed on you. "I haven't felt this good in decades, for sure." She stretched her arms until a small crack echoed from her spine. "Ahn~"

"I'm not interested in hearing the pleasure you derive from this hunt. You may have saved my life, but you were also the one who threatened it. Thus, I feel no need to entertain your gloating." You stood up and reached for your clothes.

"I'm not talking about the hunt, human, but the dream you had last night." You stopped abruptly, anxiously looking at her. "As it turns out, my sap had the surprising effect of bonding our minds through your fever." She smiled. "I assure you, I felt every throb and spasm that young man gave you. Who knew your kind could dream so vividly?" You felt a surge of anger inside you. No trespassing warranted the danger you lived through yesterday, and no slight could justify getting your heart infiltrated like this.

"My, and what a fascinating mind you have, so chock full of fantasies! Most around that man with the deft fingers, sometimes shared with that blonde shaman girl, though I doubt she'd enjoy the positions you put her in-"

"Enough!" Your fist clenched into a ball.

"Tsk. Fine." She stood up. "I'll be honest, feeding you to Suud as mere prey feels wasteful on this beautiful morning." she said, running her fingers through the lynx's fur.

"So what about a new deal, Fhor, daughter of Marik?" She clapped once, a wicked smile on her face. "Let's bond again! Let me delve into your mind, feast on your yearnings. If you accept, I promise you will wake up at the edge of my forest, unarmed."

The woman was ecstatic. "I'm glad you accepted, Fhor!" Before you could react, she was holding you close, her lips close to yours.

The dryad's thick tongue penetrated your mouth violently and found its way down your throat, her slimey sap running down your neck and chest, clinging to your skin like honey. Soon enough you gagged, unable to take anymore, and tried pushing her back, but her grip was steadfast. As she pinned you down, you began to panic, thrashing about wildly.

And as your consciousness faded again, you could faintly hear her laugh in your mind, a faint, sinister chuckle echoing in your mind.
