    Chapter 1: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Sisters%20of%20Battle

    Chapter 2 pt 1: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/12385200/

You move quickly, informing Tessa and Verity of the situation. They rush to round up the other celestians, all of them quickly rushing back onto the sisters' ship.

You quickly find the Canoness, relaying the information to her and suggesting a course of action.

"Sisters that are planet side? We're all up here Inquisitor. The Ecclesiarch didn't want our knowldege of Esme to spread before it could be deemed truthful or heretical."

She looked away, moving to a rack and donning a large flowing cape. The Cloak of St Aspira. "This isn't the time for words, however. It is a time for action. I do not agree with an orbital strike inquisitor. I'm in charge of the military force here and seeing as you do not outrank me, I say we survey the situation before wiping out thousands of lives."

She grabbed a plasma pistol and holstered it on her hip, hitting a button on the wall, starting a rather loud alarm.

Suddenly the entire ship was buzzing with activity as more than a hundred fully armored sisters moved onto large dropships. You could hear a faint rumbling under the din of armored boots as tanks were loaded onto still more dropships.

"I suggest getting together whatever guardsmen you have Inquisitor. We could be in for one hell of a fight..."
    >> Anonymous 10/11/10(Mon)01:41 No.12403778
    roll call?
the new guy here. Not sure what to do.. since the cannoness either has forgotten something very important. That inquisitors can go *blam* to pretty much anyone(s) including a planet if they deem fit. They outrank every non inquisitor (spess murehns?). This is unless I'm mistaken. If I am I need to brush up. If I'm not she has really over steped our bounds by countermanding our orders.
    >> Anonymous 10/11/10(Mon)01:42 No.12403784
though that assumes this quest is completely cannon.

Inqusitors don't outrank canonesses. They are a completely different branch that sorta crosses a little. You can give orders to sisters, but you cant order a canoness, and her orders are taken over yours.

Your thinking of an inqusitor LORD. They are the ones whose word is law.

The canoness can't really give you orders however.

    “Outrank me. OUT RANK. ME”
“You forget your place sister. In matters of faith. You have authority. In matters of the Ecclesiarchy, you have your authority. But in all matters of the Imperium of the God Emperor, I am the final authority. “
“There is a greater daemon on that planet. If that creature is not killed in the next five minutes I am considering calling in the assistance of the Ordo Malleus and having this planet orbital bombed into the stone age.
“I do not take this lightly Canoness. I know the terrors of the warp better than most and I shall have you know that the population of this planet are condemned. They will burn in the warp should we not act immediately to contain this situation.”
“All hands. Prepare for battle. In the Emperors name we grant his peace to those on this planet. Have the Astropath call to all Naval ship in the area. Tell them we seek assistance in the cleansing of this planet. The great enemy is amongst us. May the Emperor protect us.”

Inquisitors may give orders to the High Lords of Terra. They can only refuse should they have good reason.
    From http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Inquisition
"As per the Inquisitorial Remit, Inquisitors hold the absolute power to judge all who fall beneath their gaze."

I don't want to get into a serious argument because this is rather fun so I'll leave you with this comment from the Lexicanum and let you make of it as you will.
“Although there is no formal system of ranks or command in the Inquisition, there are a number of positions that may be held by an Inquisitor. These positions do not bring any more authority (an Inquisitor's authority is already absolute), however the incumbent Inquisitor will have increased influence over his peers by virtue of his office.”
    >> His Divine Power 10/11/10(Mon)02:04 No.12404026
    >>12403921

The high ranking inqusitors do yeah. Your more on an equal playing field with Galatea and while you are an experienced inqusitor she's been a canoness for over eighty years. its probably better to listen to her.
    >> Anonymous 10/11/10(Mon)02:05 No.12404031
    >>12403921

At that level of power in the Imperium, everyone has am unimaginable amount of power derived from their own feudal powerbase. Inquisitors have the legal authority to blam anyone they please, but only a few Inquisitor Lords have enough influence and political clout to make that a credible threat. Those who overstep the amount of influence they actually wield could just as quickly find themselves executed for heresy by their more powerful or savvy peers.
    >> Anonymous 10/11/10(Mon)02:08 No.12404057
A valid point. So what do we do: Go along with it, do our own thing, or take charge (may even need to kill her. Though this is risky. Secular power is only power so long as people recongnize it. We dangerous in our own right, but it would be difficult and counter productive to take on a whole ship.
    >> His Divine Power 10/11/10(Mon)02:09 No.12404069
    >>12403987

I'd also rather not argue. While an inqusitor's word is absolute they also have to think about the political ramifications of their actions. especailly when they are a younger inqusitor. They are limited in that regard. That is why the canoness is your superior. Especially in this regard. Military and warfare.

I think you guys are being to hasty on the whole orbital bombardment angle. We might have to execute the populace eventually, and we might not, but the most important evidence right now, it seems to me, are the devices. We should try to recover as many as we can, not blast them into rubble from space.
    >> Anonymous 10/11/10(Mon)02:17 No.12404131
    >>12404026
I don't doubt politically she could out manoeuvre me but at the moment, without any greater power to call too, I am the absolute authority in this area. And considering I’ve just bound a daemon to my service I’m not expecting to survive long should I come across a puritan Inquisitor, although my own faction would back me, I’m probably going to go down should there be a hearing by my fellow Inquisitors.
    >>12404031
Oh I know that, but that is amongst Inquisitors, and though she is a canoness, politically powerful. With a daemon incursion underway, her presence and her convent being investigated as too their relationship with the powers of chaos, she isn’t really in much of a position to argue. If a System Lord was here, or a Naval Fleet Commander to argue with me I would be happy to back down, but at the moment I have the political right because of the investigation.

I love arguments, sorry about this.
    >> Anonymous 10/11/10(Mon)02:19 No.12404153
It would be valuable to do this, but its quite possible these sisters are comprimized. Unless the daemon is tricking us (quite possible) a chaos god was able to greatly alter one of their number. Just because this may not have gone 'just as planed' doesn't mean anything. However the sisters did show ability to contain the attack on our ship. This shows some promise, but may be elaborate just as planned. Orbital strike is sure, but no long term advantage (sure.. in a sorta way). Counter strike is risky but potentially more advantagious.
    >> His Divine Power 10/11/10(Mon)02:20 No.12404156
    >>12404095

Galatea just gave you a cold look. The thousand mile stare of a wizened warrior. "Those hiveworlders are fighting back down there, I know because i've seen it before. There are hundreds, thousands of places for a daemon to hide where it would be safe from an orbital attack. And even if it is injured, the flood of dead souls will easily heal it. All that it would accomplish is to kill what resistance the hiveworlders are putting up right now and leave my sisters out in the open when we make planetside."

"Exterminatus is always an option, however, with warp portals spawning all over and us having no idea how they are starting, we will most likely destroy any chance we have of learning its workings or how to stop it." She pushed past you and Filigree, flexing her power fist.

"Now if you'll excuse me inqusitor, I have a job to do."
    >> Anonymous 10/11/10(Mon)02:21 No.12404162

    >>12404119
I disagree. Greater daemons are not things that appear lightly. Serious power must be used to counter these threats and since we don't have a large army at hand, we must limit the spread of the daemons and then exicute them should they survive the initial assault

... you have no idea how much political weight a canoness has, do you?

if a sister survives long enough to rise to the rank of Canoness she's been blessed by the emperor. To survive in that position for eighty years...

You may have a higher status than her but in her mind, you do not outrank her. She's seen far more chaos than you

Established is such a strong word considering our source, but inaction will not lead us to any good. I say let her do her thing, but what do we do. We could go with her, but if things go Bad End then eveything is doomed (or at least the plot). Or we could stay in our ship and keep in contact. If things go bad exterminatus.

You stormed off, ignoring her prattle, and followed the Canoness onto a drop ship. You noticed Filigree was with you once the door closed. "Oh come ON!" You buckle in next to a sister with an extremely scarred face. She was the only one in her squad not wearing a helmet.

The Canoness looked Filigree up and down. "Not like that she's not."

Galatea reached into the pod and pulled out a las gun, giving a brief summary on how to use it and tossed it to Filigree along with two charge packs.

"Don't you go dying on me inquisitor. I swear if you decide to cop out before relying the information on esme, I'll-"

She was cut off by an ear splitting roar, a Bloodthirster crashing out from behind some nearby rubble.

No i'm not questioning you inqusitor"

She motioned several times to the sisters, watching them line up, two multimeltas and a plasma pistol aimed at the Bloodthrister, the Canoness drawing her own plasma pistol and pointing at it.

"Considering the hellstorm around us I just thought it unwise for her to go in unarmed. She can cover your flank."

The sisters and Canoness began firing, the charging Daemon slowing very quickly as the beams and bursts of white hot plasma ripped the huge beast apart, the creature dropping and evaporating just shy of the squad.

"I think i'll tag along with you Inquisitor. At least for a ways. If I stay here then nothing will survive long enough to get into close range." She flexed her powerfist impatiently.

Filigree just stood there, gaping at where the Bloodthirster used to be. "I love you guys... I love you guys so much..."

A puritan would probably have killed it, the tech priest who failed to recognise the portal corruption box, and probably killed Tessa just because she was touched by a daemon.

The bloodthirster advances quickly, Juggernauts of khorne, Flesh hounds, and Bloodletters close on its heels. Not too far off you can see another two Bloodthirsters advancing, bellowing in fury. It would be impossible to fight them all at once. Not without backup... A lot of backup...

You tell Galatea to go for the device after forcing Filigree into cover, but she doesn't budge. You look at her. She's on her knees, in prayer. Just as you are about to yell at her to get it together, the portal widens with a crack like thunder, a silver, gold trimmed gauntlet forcing its way out.

What emerged from the portal was nothing short of spectacular. A woman, her armor embossed with Aquilas and Fleur de Lys, hovered inches over the ground, her sword and head wreathed in light so bright it was impossible to gaze at directly. Sapphires set into her armor and the hilt of her sword pulsed with an otherworldly energy, her hair a wreathe of white flame.

Everything happened very quickly then. Eseme swooped down, her body streaking through the air like a comet of holy fire. She landed amongst the lesser daemons, incinerating half of them in an instant. She turned and lept forward, her target the Bloodthirsters approaching from a distance.

Off to the side, several daemons of Tzeentch screeched as several squads of sisters peppered them with shots, Tessa's celestians rushing in to rend them apart with their screaming swords. They must have seen the light from Esme's body.

You almost forgot about the Bloodthirster in front of you until it roared, bringing you back to reality. Before you could react, Canoness Galatea, glowing faintly as her faith burned within her, charged, firing her plasma pistol at the bloodthirster until it turned red hot. Casting the weapon aside, she lept into the air, the daemon's sword biting deeply into her outer thigh as she brought her powerfist down on the great beast's face, crushing it.

The bloodthirster stumbled back, screeching in agony, its free hand wrapping around Galatea's armored form, crushing and pulling at her, but it was too late. The Greater Daemon fell back as the repeated strikes reduced its face and skull to a bloody pulp, the rest of its body falling back and dissipating.

There were daemons swarming from the portal now, daemonettes, pink horrors, plaguebearers, and still more bloodletters.

Filigree, who had attempted to make herself as small as possible when Esme arrived, poked her head out of her hiding spot, watching the battle unfold in silence. The daemons must have sensed what she was as they seemed to be ignoring her.>>12410509

You charge toward the portal device, jumping and dodging around the daemons. You swing your force blade with purpose, slaughtering the creatures of the warp left and right.

There are too many, however. You begin using your bolt pistol but it doesn't make much of a difference. You cant seem to make any progress...

You instinctively roll to the side as the sound of automatic weaponry shakes the air, though the shots wern't aimed at you.

You look up and see Sister Anna and her squad of heavy weapons marching toward you, their bolters and heavy flamer clearing away the daemons in their path. They stop nearby, the multimeltas and heavy bolter setting up and firing, obliterating the daemons exiting the hellgate.

Fire was too heavy to get near the device, however.

Tessa and her team managed to reach your position. Her squad seemed unhurt for the most part except for several cuts and bruises. One sister seemed to have a broken arm, Verity tending to her injury with ease.

"Hey Delessa!!!" She clapped you on the back, shooting a rushing daemon with the other arm. "You want some backup?"

She gestured to the device, looking up and nodding at Anna. The heavily scarred sister responded with a thumbs up. They would stop firing when you decided to move.

Lacking anything else, I'd say we should try to communicate to Esma, via our psyker abilities, that she should pick us up, carry us until we are over the machine and drop us so we can destroy it with one swoop as we come crashing down, using an unfortunate demon to cushion our fall. Then we go full sparta on the demons as we fight them from their mid, back to back with Esma.

You charge forward, Anna's supressing fire stopping instantly, Tessa and the others hot on your heels. your sword pulses violet as you activate its force nature, cleaving down the daemons before you.

With the help of the sisters you make your way to the device, jamming your bolt pistol halfway down a daemonette's throat and, exhaling a long puff of cigar smoke, fire a single clean shot, sending bits of blood and brain matter everywhere before evaporating along with the rest of the body.

You make your way over to the machine, dropping the butt of your current cigar and grinding it into the rock with the toe of your polished inquisitorial boot.

Blade pointed downward, you shout a praise to the emperor as you thrust the blade down into it, letting go of the handle, letting the energy field destroy the electronics within.

You turn to walk away, taking two steps before pulling out another cigar and lighting it. There is a booming crack behind you as the portal begins to collapse in on itself, creating a vortex drawing in all nearby daemons. The smoke from your calm exhales and the tip of your cigar drift along the path of the screaming daemons as you walk slowly forward out of the crater.

You brush a bit of dust off your shoulder, taking another long drag, as you watch Esme cut the last bloodthirster vertically in half with her blazing sword.

The sisters cheered, gathering around each other, hugging and clapping each other on the shoulders. Several sisters you didn't know, along with Verity and another hospitaller rushed to Galatea's side, catching her before she fell. Her injuries were bad, but not fatal.

Esme drifted down slowly, sheathing her sword, skimming just over the landscape, her boots inches from the ground. She paused near Galatea, smiling at the wizened Battle Sister.

"You didn't have to do that..."

"And you didn't have to save that girl. But look at us now. I'm half dead and you're flying." Galatea let out a short laugh which quickly turned into a wet cough, blood dripping from her mouth.

Esme reached one hand out to her but the canoness waved her off. "What doesn't kill you..."

The Exalted Sister paused, giving her a nod before moving on, giving the sisters she past small nods of thanks. She stopped a ways from you, in front of Sister Tessa who was struggling to find her voice.

"I told you I'd be ba-" She was cut off by Tessa's hug, the silver clad angel sliding back a little. She returned her embrace gently. "As much as this moment means to me, I'm afraid I must cut it short. There is a certain inquisitor that needs my attention."

Reluctantly Tessa let go. She hung her head slightly, trying to look strong. Esme drifted silently toward you, hesitating momentarily, her eyes drifting to the rock Filigree was hiding behind before moving slowly back to you.

I think the anon means that Radical Inqusitors bind daemons into their service for the purposes of using their power with no intention of sending them back.

I would disagree; we have in our service, for a period of time, an agent of chaos. A puritan, the other half of the order would have killed the daemon regardless of the possibility of information under the guise that any information from an agent of chaos is likely to be corrupted and serving the ends of the patron god. By virtue of considering the service of the daemon we are a radical. The degree of radical is well and truly up for debate, we don't carry around a greater daemon bound in a sword, or have a copy of the Rubric of Ahriman so we aren't absolute radical but we crossed that line when we didn't kill the daemon.

Oh there are varying degrees of radical, think of it like politics. (I'm interpruting it like this) Not sure where you are but assuming you are in America/know of American system. There are Republicans/Puritans (I think) and Democrats/Radical. Now in both parties there are a huge plethora of people with differing opinions and beliefs, but they are placed in that category.
We are herby called radical by virtue of using a daemon as a servant, no matter the period of time. So we’ve chosen our party, where we stand in that is up to us.

I believe we should go with the idea that chaos can be tamed and brought to serve us just like xeno technology can be brought to serve us. But I leave that up for debate.

The reason for my belief is we are alone and as the OP pointed out, not that politically powerful. You ally to a faction that serves your beliefs and run with them for self preservation as much as assistance when required.
Just remember, we have to go back to our boss and report our findings, and there will be those who disagree, and they will be powerful and work against us. Being alone in this system gets you killed.

Esme looks completely calm. "To this question, inquisitor, I do not have an answer. All I know is that within my breast, my faith glows. Warm coals to heat the souls of those who have fallen away from His divine light. Ave Imperator."

She follows you as you attempt to coax a petrified Filigree out of her hiding spot, Esme's mere presence causing her skin to crackle, smoking lightly.

The Exalted Martyr arched one brow, withdrawing her power further into herself. You could feel the warp's presence return to your mind, your mental discipline kicking in to prevent it from overtaking you.

"Curiosity. That is this one's vice. To whisper and gossip endlessly and to spread and learn of rumors, and yet she desires the same as all who are present. To learn of what the ruinous powers plan and the purposes of the device in which your force blade still remains buried."

"As much as I feel I should cast her into the warp for the atrocity that is her existence, I sense she may yet have a role to play in this."

Esme looks straight at you. "This is bigger than any of your agendas Inquisitor. I know you wish to lock me away until you learn what I am, but I fear that time is something that we can not afford to lose. We must learn from this device all we can."

Esme bows her head slightly, smiling gently. "Thank you inquisitor." She turned her attention to the device, using her psykic powers to clear away the dust and rock that had partially buried it on impact.

Now that it was out of the ground, it was clear that it was a completely different device than the one inside. Well... not completely. It seemed to have the same basic function but on a much larger scale. It was pointed and notched at one end to easily bore through rock and metal and wedge itself into the ground.

You ask the sisters for help in contacting your ship. Many of them are no longer looking at you. They did not like the idea of you keeping a daemon as a pet, regardless the reason.

You move and sit near Filigree as the sisters work to finish their tasks, radioing in, and cleaning up the battlefield. Esme takes it upon herself to remove the device from the ground, her power easily wrapping around the portal generater and gently lifting it out of the ground. It was a lot bigger than the other one aboard the ship, tons bigger.

She gently set it down near the edge of the crater. It was at least ten feet long and had a huge metal spike at one end. Probably to make it very difficult to remove from the ground.

Esme, as predicted, went off to be with her sisters for a bit as the mechanicus arrived, quickly managing to open it up and tinker around inside.

the trick is to look at how the claw twists at what altitude as it drops. that takes 2 or 3 tries where you dont get anything. then you look for something the claw could wrap around thats exposed enough for that sort of thing. usually though by the time you get to those machines they've become impacted and its impossible to get anything out.

Much of Galatea's armor had been removed and she was currently sporting a plethora of bandages. She was leaning on her escorts for support. Of the sisters, one was helmeted, the other had jet black hair. They looked a little disgusted but also regretful.

"Err..." Galatea begain, shifting uncomfortably in her bandages. "Sister Tessa and Sister Verity explained why you bound the daemon... We still do not agree but we will respect your reasoning behind it, as you didn't do it for the mere gain of power." Her face grew serious. "But I will not have that abomination back on my ship. You will conclude your business planetside and leave, or send her back to the warp if you wish to continue with us."

She seemed a bit nervous, glancing at the helmeted sister.

"The spike of energy from The Exalted Martyr's return and the remaining hiveworlder's communications broadcasts have caught the attention of the surrounding area. Canoness Florencia of the Ebon Chalice and her Seraphim are coming to bear witness to this event... I suggest you either hide your daemon or put her to good use with the mechanicus."

The canoness's smile returned. "We wont have to worry about her there. Those tech-priests probably lack genitalia by now anyway."

You think that's all they're interested in.
So long as one of the devices comes with me I shall be more than happy to depart company. Let us hope you can secure this area and cleanse it of taint for the divine Emperors subjects to return, Another Inquisitor is likely to arrive to investigate the population following my departure and is unlikely to be as courteous to your recommendations as myself.

Tell Filigree that if the mechanicus protests to tell them that she's there on order of the inquisition and send her off. Do we have any details on the other canoness?

"Anyway- the point is moot. I know you may not like me or my methods Canonness, but I thank you for not executing me and for the restraint your sisters show towards my acolyte. It's not often I encounter Soritas as reasonable as you. Now, to business."

Eh, the grey knights may have advantages in sheer power, but the sisters more then make up for that in raw zealotry and willingness to burn stuff.
Anyways, there aren't any grey knights around here at the moment, so we should ask the sisters.

I'd think they are more used to bound daemons seeing as they deal with them all the time. Probably capture a couple during battle to test initiates against.

Filigree scampers off, quite happy to get away from the sisters. Galatea lets out a held breath, shaking her head. "Hardly reasonable. My troops tell me that the only reason they hesitated in the first place was the fear of hitting Esme. And even then it was only The Exalted Martyr's order that saved you. Even now, I'm still displeased that you deceived us inquisitor."

Her tone changed, relaxing a bit more. "Regardless, we need your support when dealing with Florencia. She and her 'Silver Winged Angels' as her seraphim are sometimes called will burn this planet to glass if she suspects any sort of heresy. Regardless of how you may feel, we need you to support us, or at least act indifferent until she is satisfied."

"Supposedly, she was in this area to teach a pair of new seraphim their basic battle tactics. Decimating small groups of tyranids while using limited ammunition is her preferred method of training."

"Is there any sort of heresy on this planet... well, any heresy except that one?" Look over to the mechanicus.

    >Even now, I'm still displeased that you deceived us inquisitor.

"I might have mislead you, a bit. Calling her my acolyte is probably the most accurate way to describe her use to me at the moment. It's not like you asked if there was anything wrong with her, if I remember correctly, you were quite pleased with her and I can assure you, she's properly bound and hasn't influenced any of your decisions."

“You smell that? Do you smell that? Promethium, sis. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of promethium in the morning. You know, one time we had a hive city bombed, for twelve weeks. When it was all over I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that wonderful smell, the whole city. Smelled like … victory.”
Look off into the distance with considered disappointment. “I’ll see what I can do.” Get up and dust off. “Some day the Emperor will return.”

Galatea shook her head, a sister coming back with her armor, cleaned and polished. "Don't call me reasonable Inquisitor. Hesitation to kill what is deemed heretical is hardly something to be praised." The sisters began helping the injured woman into the armor, despite the fact that several bandages were beginning to darken.

"There isn't much to say about her. She purges the unclean without hesitation or question and follows orders given without question. She is not a force to be taken lightly. I am a somewhat lenient Canoness as compared to the normal image one imagines when they think of the sisterhood. She is the opposite, going as far as executing her own soldiers for insubordination, regardless of reason."

She looked you up and down, biting the inside of her cheek. "We need to get you better armor... Just in case..."

She is okay. She won the galaxy lottery and used the money to better her planet by improving anti-heresy measures and developing it more so that better communication with the rest of the imperium can be maintained. She then took the rest of it and gave it to the poor and needy single handedly lifting her entire planet out of the "dark ages".

She also has a loving dog named benny with which she frolics through the flowers with every day.

Order the ship to send a drop pod with our shadily aquired Assassinorum bodyglove to our position. Or, if we don't want to appear as "Incredibly sex ass Inquisitor" , something quite possible after the whole daemonette deal, that power armour we we got when we were promoted.

Galatea didn't reply but the sisters around her quickly put on their helmets before reattaching her powerfist.

"What kind of armor do you want, Inquisitor? Carapace? Mesh? Power armor? Emperor, I think we have an extra synthskin suit from... a while ago..." The canoness, glanced to the side, her powerfist tightening a fraction, the other sisters, taking a tiny step back, probably grateful that their faces were hidden.
