Lost’s arms strained against her curled up legs. Her eyes were clenched shut. Bubbles occasionally ran out her nose, whizzing by her blond hair that trailed upward as she drifted downward. She was barely aware of that, of anything, as she tried desperately to hold on. She didn’t know how, but if she gave up, surrendered, breathed in the hateful blood she would be lost; worse her body would be controlled by the very things that hated her.
With the life and death struggle, Lost only hanging on by a mental fingernail, it took her a while to notice the pounding thump. The beat, like a massive drum, throbbed across her, suppressing and supplanting even the pain. Slowly, ever so slowly, she cracked her eyes open. They widened in surprise at what she saw. And what she felt.
In many ways it was like a beating heart, in others, like a mind. But at the very core, it was a stomach. It had a sentience, both wide and infantile, and a knowledge that it was the most important thing on the planet. It stood at the heart of things, and would grow to encompass the entire world. But it was what was trapped in there that took Lost’s breath away.
It had people inside of it. Not physical people, Lost knew with a sickening certainty, for their bodies had been rendered into food for its body, but their minds. Their minds, their souls, where trapped inside of this being, and it was digesting them. Like bright blue on this campus of red she could see them, inside the jellied throbbing mess that was their captor. It worked slowly and methodically on each and every one, knowing when it broke one, soon another would follow, and another: a dam bursting, filling it with information. And every second she watched another was added to it. |
