But where the hell are we supposed to get heavy cavalry? We live in rolling hills and dense forestage, even if we could buy the chargers off of somebody, we'll never be able to armor them properly with our industrial base, nor will we be able to field the numbers of them required to make that kind of cavalry effective in this terrain.
No, it's best to rely upon a fight & retreat doctrine, mounted archers and multipurpose skirmishing infantry. We've got no choice in the matter.

And I sympathize with your situation, I really do, but what do you do when the Ruvians show up? Legionary infantry, good supply lines, heavy armor? You can't just arrow them to death, remember the Perthins? They had to use kataphractoi to spit their lines and THEN bombard them for six hours. If you try to fight the legions like you fight everyone else, they'll roof their houses with your ears.

This is, of course, assuming that your infantry can't stand toe to toe with the legions as it is. Now, it may be that the elves have heavier infantry than we were led to believe, and if that's the case maybe you have a chance, but is that really worth betting on?

We did a study of the Ruvians a while back, and I'll be the first to admit that we've got nothing that they don't have in a contest of raw strength.
Now that being said, remember that their primary weakness isn't their supply lines, but rather their deployability. The Ruvians can move a baggage train like nobody else over short distances, but if you lead them on a merry chase, which is something we're very good at mind you, they run out of steam pretty fast. They overextend, and then you snip off their lines near the base, where they're not expecting you to.

Orcs did it in Titanburg, we'll do it in Sylvania if we've got to.

Entirely willing. Trees grow back, and by elvish standards, it doesn't even take particularly long. We're not interested in what is ON the land, only the land itself. The myth that a tree and some grass are what we're fighting to protect is strongly misleading. The very spirit of the land goes dormant when these things are destroyed, and we seek to free it again through their regrowth, but ultimately it is not the foliage itself that is sacred.

Look at how the Haka tribesmen of the southern sea fight the Ponaturi sea-devils. The Ponaturi desire nothing more than to burn and destroy; they are like puppies, when they see an enemy flee, they follow. So you run from then, and you let them destroy a village, and you let them burn and pillage their way after you. And then, right as their gills begin to dry and they turn around to go back to the sea, they find your warriors standing between them and the water.
A hungry enemy will overextend if he thinks himself victorious and his foe routing, regardless of whether or not he has what he wants already. If there is anything we elves are good at, it is looking like beaten cowards.

Occupy what? A bunch of trees and some hostile natives? We aren't Gaul, we have no cities, no treasures, and no natural resources beyond some wood and us ourselves, and the casualties we can inflict through our harrying would make any military endeavor completely unprofitable for any military professional enough to actually defeat us, even if we were all caught alive and sold into bondage afterwards.
That being said, if someone was DETERMINED to defeat us, building wooden fortresses in a zig-zagging pattern and rapidly moving supplies forward between them under heavy guard would be the best bet. We cannot hope to defeat an opponent we cannot starve.

Just a hypothetical question, it is best to plan for an possibly than to be caught unawares.

Another possibility although one i'm sure the elves simply don't mind and can probably wait is containment. if the enemy decides you're to much of threat to be left unguarded but it would be useless to flush you out, he contains and keeps you from sallying forth to allies aid.

Containing an enemy is basically as good as defeating him, I'll agree. However, one must bear in mind that the elvish forests aren't simply a 100 acre wood dropped in the middle of human lands. We are the Schwarzvald, the Balkan Woodlands, the forests of Sherwood. True forests of this size serve as national barriers in and of themselves, and are typically bordered by several countries at once. In order to contain an elvish wood, one must first convince all of their neighbors to do the same, or else conquer them first.
Our elders have not discounted the possibility, which is why you will notice that most of our direct neighbors enjoy good relations with our people, and a burgeoning population of half elves.

It is basic tactical thinking, like your human game "Go." Being surrounded is our weakness, so we surround ourselves with the trustworthy.
    >> Anonymous 03/01/10(Mon)19:02 No.8349770
    >>8349669
Containment would only really work if you were a: trying to stop the elves from conquering places or b: they were in small enough forests to effectively siege. If we are going by medieval level forestry, there is going to be a LOT of forest to try and contain.

That's a good question actually, and I don't think I have the answer. We rely on our enemy being ponderous and having supply lines, an enemy who arrives without warning, burns something down and then leaves is foreign to us.
I would guess that the best bet would be to arm border villages and ensure that everyone is prepared to abandon their territory and launch a fighting retreat at any time. Ensuring that there is never anything worth stealing might help as well.

Do you recall the 100 years war? How the British fought there, the Elves fight everywhere else. March through the enemy's countryside, rely on foraging and looting for supplies, outmaneuver enemy armies, and generally just burn shit down until they are incapable of fighting anymore. Remember, elves aren't interested in material goods the same way humans are, any offensive war they fight is over slighted rights or is a preemptive attack to destroy a possible aggressor.
Holding land, besieging actual castles, and fighting enemy armies head-on are all things that elves will refuse to do in war if they are at all able. Superior mobility, a lack of supply lines, and a large recruitable force of specialists are the strengths of an elvish army.

If one will fight Elves, and one wishes to destroy them, rather than just contain or otherwise engage in limited war... then one should strike what they love. Despoil the land. Not just burning or cutting trees, poison the rivers and aquifers, release diseased animals into the woods, especially in mating season, if you have other means of spreading corruption, use it.
Do this in numerous places at once after playing a containment game that appears to be standardized warfare. If you know the Elves are pious, then disease some of your convict soldiers and release them into the woods, offer false cessations of hostilities, and then send plague-ridden attendants with your ambassadors.
Also, make sure to make a big show of starting fires and cutting their precious trees so they may assume you less cunning.

This is an abominable strategy of course, but if you wish to wipe them out utterly, you are likely an abominable individual.

Question: Why is elvish mobility superior? Is it because they have no supply lines or baggage train to keep up with them, or are they universally mounted or something?

It appears to me that Elf offensive capability is solely limited on being able to hit and maneuver out of harm's way in time. They can only hit something and flee not conquer. But with no need to conquer their style fits them perfectly. It is interesting to note the the tactics used to defeat elves is the primary strategy of the dwarves (siege, heavy hitting decisive battles) and the tactics to defeat a dwarf army is an elf strategy (hit-and-run, skirmish warfare).

Well, diseasing one's own troops tends to destroy moral. Mutiny is likely if the tactic is ever leaked. A clever commander may be able to stall it by blaming the Elves themselves for the ailments, but it won't hold long.
As with many other vile tactics, a weakness is possible objection from a hitherto uninvolved third party. Especially if said third party has reason to believe the Elve's foe may become their foe one day.
This requires diplomacy, which can be tricky tho.
If you can reverse the situation, gain an ally on your enemy's flank, you may then be able to hold them in and let their toxins eat them instead. Time becomes incredibly crucial tho, as does superior intelligence on the state of neighbouring politics.

A good question, and one that kept us stumped for a while, but in the end the answer was simple: Ignore them, and go burn their homes down in turn. We live in the forest, but the forest is very large, and we move about in it often. Humans live in static locales, and scorched earth is a manpower intensive activity leaving few in place for defense. Though what is destroyed may well take centuries to heal, we cannot afford to try and stop it directly: Better to do the same to them until the cries for help outweigh the cries for blood.

They're also getting food, animal messengers, scouts and being unobstructed by the woods. It's a general cutting down of time spent doing all activities that makes them faster, not speed.

The Drow are not an asset. They are disorganized, prone to infighting, and ultimately will always have ulterior motives for joining you, none of which will be to your benefit. The only people who make worse allies than elves are dark elves.

They still are susceptible to disease and poison. I cramped and contained subterranean environs, containment becomes easier, the dense populations make disease more readily spread, and the lack of rain makes poisoning water sources more effective.
Also, cave-ins become a new tactic for both force containment, and population destruction.

In all but the most limited capacity and unique setting, the Drow seem resistant to being given subservient roles in any relationship. As I recall, they use mostly slaves for the bulk of their armies, at least the front line portion. Thus, convincing them to do a task so far beneath them may be difficult to say the least.

Our numbers being what they are, of course, though rarely on the offense. Contracting mercenaries from neighboring countries can add line-fighting muscle to our otherwise hit and run defensive armies is regular practice. Dwarves are not always the best choice, as they are too different to blend well with our strategic doctrine, but humans always find a niche. Our primary issue is that we generally do not have much to offer in return, except logging rights and the promise of our own support of their causes in the future.

Protracted alliances may cause you more grief than they are worth. Especially if the grandchild of the one whom you allied with turns out to be of a dissimilar temperament, leaving you with an alliance to someone you are ill disposed towards, someone who may draw you into more conflicts.

If there is anything that Elves know how to do, it is taking the long view. The matter of politics is not my focus, precisely, but in general allies are chosen because they will remain so in the forseeable future. Otherwise, mercenaries are bought with the promise of magic and the right to plunder. Because of our motives for war, we can offer atypically high proportions of loot to our hired help.

I think it is mostly due to a degradation of family values, and a cultural obsession with freedom and wanderlust. Our people have easy access to contraceptives, and no moral punctuation against using them. Coupled with an already long gestation and raising period, and the inherent dangers of living in the Schwarzvald (dire wolverines. So yeah.) we generally do not see more than miniscule population growth yearly despite having little in the way of scarcity and strife, and even that growth is mostly because our elderly simply refuse to die.

You will note, also, that this is simultaneously the cause of the ever-increasing half-elf population outside of our borders. Human women are no harder a conquest for the males, and they tend to lack easy methods of preventing pregnancy. Coupled with the inattentiveness of our men, this leads to a high rate of bastard half-elves in human lands. This has actually been the cause of wars before, and as such we have begun to accept them into our own lands to alleviate tension with the other nations.
Many now fear that within a few centuries' time, we will be dramatically out-bred by halfbreeds in our own lands. That is not too much of a problem, as they live a shorter time, and with a few generations of breeding with pure elves, their bloodlines can be brought more or less back into the fold. Once again, by taking the long view we strengthen ourselves numerically, and do not permanently weaken our powerbase in the process.

"Scorched earth" campaigns only truly work on enemies who require centralized transportation and supply--and they work best on the defense, not offense. Trying to root out a decentralized enemy capable of widespread foraging and concealment requires a prohibitive amount of manpower, widely dispersed. You would be spending all your army's money on salt alone.

Similarly, your army is now destroying its own forage as it advances, and your dispersed burning parties are extremely vulnerable to ambush by mobile raiding parties.

Hypothetically, but it might take centuries. And more importantly, it would involve organizing said groups, when the elvish people are inherently fractal and uncontrollable until times of conflict. Such things have happened before, but most often it is resolved by a gathering of tribes. Inter-tribal strife does count as a crisis to be addressed as a united front. Usually, the issue is resolved without bloodshed or through duels of leadership.

We lack the ambition and the cutthroat idealism that humans use to motivate themselves, and while that might make us slow to act, it also makes us hard to manipulate.

Oh my, yes. But unlike some Cultures, we do not see it as our moral imperative to go out and nose about in other peoples' business. We assuage our boredom through the fine arts, travel and exploration, but... Most importantly, repetition. Humans, with their limited lifespans, desire new things. They want to go out and do what has not been done, to squeeze as much life into their years as they can.
An elf has no such imperative. Though in our youths we travel and explore, there are many older elves amongst us who awaken at the same stroke of the hour every morning, consume the same meal, work the same craft, bed the same husband, and sleep the same waking sleep every day for millennia. There is comfort and meaning in repetition. For all of our wanderlust and adventuresome spirit, the older we get, the more apparent it is that life is best when kept simple and similar.

Oh elves won't only mess up your shit if you come into a forest...the urban jungle is just as much of a playground if they want it to be.

God help us all if we do manage to destroy all nature and they are forced to meet us in our own terrain.

Suddenly, several hundred people drop torches around the periphery of the forest. No more forest.

Yes, because destroying a forest-dwelling enemy is as easy as lighting the forest on fire. Someone tell the Romans, I'm sure they'll be overjoyed to hear that the Tuetonburg issue has been resolved.

Not to mention, the elves are probably pretty good at not being simply burned out of their forest.

I'm not going to lie, it had occurred to me that the Bromans could have saved themselves a lot of trouble by just lighting Germany on fire. Why didn't they?

The desire to not only kill their enemies, but gain something for their trouble, comes to mind. It's very hard to live on properly burned land.

The only thing ever really stopping elves is the low birth rate and long period till maturity is reached.

If humans couldn't just throw waves of fodder at them there would be nothing stopping the elves...well that and the fact elves tend to be at war with everyone who isn't a forest creature.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)03:24 No.8358336
    >>8358310
Actually, they addressed this too in the thread, and it was in fact one of their major stumbling points.

Hence why half-elves are so prominent.

I thought it was a very well thought out spiel. There are definite and acknowledged holes in how the elves fight, and they patch them up as best they can. Fire seems like the obvious answer, but something in me just can't believe that it's that easy. Shame the original guy's gone.

If we accept that Elves possess magical ability, then it's entirely reasonable to assume that they'd be aware of this threat and plan accordingly.
Fire patrols (mounts or friendly/trained creatures with the ability to fly, most likely), fast response teams with a fuckton of scrolls with douse or whatever.

Hell, a similar setup except with firebreaks and wells/reservoirs would be possible even without magic. Also, if we're dealing with truly powerful mages, surely an epic spellcaster could just research a spell to fireproof the trees and leaf-litter over vast swathes of forest.
I know the "hurr durr elfs are teh gay" mentality is rife in /tg/, but it's pretty standard to assume that a long lived race of intelligent forest dwellers *might* have considered some of the disadvantages of their chosen dwelling.

That's a good point. Personally, I always kind of liked elves, but only tangentially. This thread kind of brought them to life for me. We don't get a look at it from where they're sitting often.
I'll loan you some expertise from a good ol' boy in fire-country: Forests don't like burning. Trees have very specific torching points, and the grass and brush in the forests almost never burns at that heat unless it's been an unusually dry fall. Simple evolution, really, the burning point is almost always juuuust enough above that of the rubbish on the ground that the whole forest doesn't go up in smoke. That's why California got fucked last year, what was it, Santa Cruz lost over 9000 acres? No bleeding rain, and redwoods are crazy-reliant on moisture not to turn into giant fibrous tinderboxes.

    >Forests don't like burning
Heh, I live in Australia and the bush here *loves* a good blaze, so I guess it depends on the kind of forest they're in too. You could probably burn an Aussie elve's bush home but... fuck man, I don't even want to think about what Australian elves would be like to piss off.

    Australians are Wood Elves.

They live in a strange environment and like to play tricks on foreigners.

a lot of brush is designed to burn.

Chamise is a plant that is coated in an oily film that is highly flammible. When it ignites, it burns away all nearby vegetation, while its seeds survive the fire.

The seeds then grow easily without competition.

Elves would be as prepared for forest fires as Dwarves would be for cave ins (fucktonnes of support struts, reinforcing and awesome Dwarven engineering).

That said, the rigours of either lifestyles could actually be a good explanation for the way Elves and Dwarves, despite their longevity, both individual and national, seem to make little progress culturally and technologically beyond a point.
