    9 KB TRENCHQUEST Trench Commander !dC3BVWSZ.I 12/11/11(Sun)17:39 No.17180245
    >A gritty, somewhat comical tale set in a wartorn planet with some light scifi/fantasy elements.

You emerge from your dugout into the acrid atmosphere. You are a nameless soldier caught in the middle of a planet-wide conflict of attrition, for reasons you yourself don't understand. The surrounding landscape is scorched and lifeless, pockmarked with shellholes and scattered with the remains of men, beast, and hulking armored vehicles. The air echos with the pounding of distant artillery, but the immediate area is calm. Above, vast six-engined bombers slowly buzz towards the enemy lines.

You are in the foreward trenches. Friendly lines extend a few miles deep to the west, and run for immeasurable distances to the north and south. To the east, at a somewhat safe distance, lie the enemy lines. You can see vast flat-top mountains rising to the west, large foreboding fortresses carved into their sides.

You are in a typical, straight section of the third-line trench. Your dugout is behind you, and the line extends to the left and right in a zig-zag pattern. In front of you, you can see the flag of the WESTERN ALLIANCE affixed to the trench wall. You have no standing orders.

    What do you do?

    >Isn't going to be a hell of a lot of artfagging, i'm horrible at it.

You check the chevrons upon your shoulder. They are of a Private, First Class. You decide it is best to find your buddies, who are probably manning the second line. Which direction do you go?

You check your gear. You are currently carrying your trusty bolt action rifle, along with your standard issue sword-bayonet in a scabbard at your hip. Four frag grenades with percussion fuse hang off your harness. Besides these weapons, you have various ration-items, cleanliness products, pack gear, a shovel, and your gas mask.

You start north through the winding trenches, passing various faces you may only be vaguely familiar with. Eventually you head east through a narrow communications trench, ending up at a large, square courtyard-like area. Light artillery pieces are pressed up against raised areas facing the enemy, and various men are milling around. A very large, obtuse-bellied man calls out to you from across the way.

    >>17180474

You approach the man, his exact identity being veiled by the passing crowds until you are closer. Drawing closer, you recognize him as your good buddy, Lance Corporal Hertz. He is dressed in a long greatcoat, and carries a bulky light machine gun from a sling at his hip.

"Finally hit the the real world, I see!" He bellows. "Come, WO wants us at the front!"

You follow your friend towards the first line. It has been a while since you were stationed here.

After stomping your way through the winding trenches, you come to a well-built, hardened trench on the very brink of no-mans-land. There is a machine gun nest to the left, but the lot of the men seem to be standing to attention against the rear wall.

Sensing something important, you and Hertz take your position along the trench wall.

After a bit of waiting and a lot of nervous shifting, the Company Warrant Officer turns the corner at the other end of the trench and begins shuffling down the ranks. He is a large, stocky man, wearing a wide-brimmed shrapnel helmet and outlined in a grey-fur cloak. From his hip sways a large sabre, and an automatic pistol is seen sticking from a wooden holster-case.

    His voice rings loudly.

"Men, aerial reconnaissance during the past few days has revealed a large enemy buildup along this sector. Artillery has been spotted being readied in the rear echelons, including a number of super-heavy railguns. HQ has thus mandated that the forward trenches be doubly-manned for an indefinite period. While we cannot say that any offensive action has been planned for sure, you are hearby ordered to be at your utmost alertness until the ranks are cycled. As such, you must change your eating and sleeping schedules accordingly. We will relay further orders and information as they become available. Dismissed."

Without a further word, he turns the corner and sets off down a communications trench. You break rank, and wonder where you should take your positions at. Hertz will follow you, although he is suggesting you try to meet up with your other buddies.

The marksman quickly shifts his head to meet the direction of the noise, a flash of hostile intent showing on his face, before finally realizing the source. He gives you a sharp, beast-like grin and drops down from from the top of the wall.

"A few of the screw-pickets shifted during the night... Nothing big." He says in a hushed, thick accent as he approaches. His nervous twitch is still very much evident.

Shortly thereafter, you are interrupted by a loud droning buzzing sound to the west. Clamoring up to the firestep, you can see a large ironclad behemoth of a vessel floating above friendly lines, heading north. Its sides bristle with artillery, and you can just barely make out the insignia of the Western Alliance upon it's length.

The Alliance Aerocorps have arrived, in force. You nervously decide that it may be a good time to hunker down, in case that it's more than a routine flyover.

Hertz idly trains his machine gun down the length of it, while you and Hamsfield take up position against some boxes and barrels in the alcove.

The buzzing noise continues to ring in your ears as the airship draws closer to your position. A small, bulky biplane fighter makes a pass over your lines, also heading north close to the ground.

You grab the optics and peer over the trench wall towards the airship. This far from the lines, it's generally safe to expose yourself somewhat.

You marvel at the sheer size of the machine. It's rigid, high-strength fiber envelope is lined with large armor plates. Gun platforms jut from the sides, ranging from large naval howitzers to small water-cooled pieces. Large catwalks hang from under it, and you can see flight-suited men running their lengths.

The topside of the ship is lined with viewing decks, topped with a central command area. You notice a large figure on one of the middle decks, peering out at the wastes. He seems to be surrounded by others, and he is dressed in what seems to be extremely regal wear. Most peculiar is his helmet, which seems to be very oddly shaped. You find it hard to focus, but try to get a better view of the figure before he passes...

His chest is covered by a steel breastplate adorned with an eagle. On his head sits a magnificent golden helmet, it's visor pulled up and topped with a figure of a falcon spreading it's wings. He carries a large cane in one hand. The man seems to have a most admirable mustache.

"...I think it might be a General of some sort! Top brass!"

For some odd, nagging reason, you are compelled to wave at him. You extend your hand towards the sky and do so, still peering through the binoculars. While you were probably just seeing things, it seems for a moment that he almost glanced at you...

Trying to see what the airship is going to do and if it's preparing it's armaments. After that, returning binoculars to Hamsfield.

"Thanks and feel free to take a look yourself."

You keep watching the figure, but before long he retreats back into the command structure.

The airship continues to go north, seemingly following the lines. It draws closer to your position. More fighters and light-bombers can be seen buzzing around the hulking craft.

Give the binoculars back to Hamsfield, we've had our look.
Take a peek over the trenches to make sure there's no one sneaking up on us>

By now, the airship is practically on top of you, filling the area with a noise so loud that you have to yell rather loudly. It continues north, up the friendly lines.

    >>17182248

You glance at your comrades. Hertz seems to have a nervous look on his face, his machine gun still trained down the trench corridor. You turn to Hamsfield and give him back your binoculars.

The airship has passed far enough, and the noise quells.

Hamsfield taps you on the shoulder. "Top brass? You think they might be surveying the enemy...?"

"That's what I got from what I saw... Anyways, we should get moving in a bit. Lastly, don't you think that bringing so much firepower for recon is a bit weird?"

Hamsfield turns to look across the scarred earth. "They could be a quick reaction force. It seems high command is more than just suspicious about whatever is going on. Something isn't right about such a high ranking official this far out, though."

You nod and turn to Hertz.

"Saddle up, big guy. We should find somewhere more easily defended."

The three of you gather your gear and exit the alcove. You decide to head to...

Keep going in the same direction we were before the airship showed up. Maybe we'll find a few more friendly faces. One of them being higher up, even.

You decide to continue north, watching the great airship slip into the distance.

The three of you are hardly shuffling now, passing through groups of gathered soldiers smoking cigarettes and eerily empty sections of trenchline.

You stop at the intersection of the first line with a communications trench running to the second. Ahead of you, you see an NCO yelling obscenities at a group of bumbling privates. To your left is a dugout in a recessed part of the intersection, a feint light spilling from the edges of the gas-flap. There seems to be friendly commotion going on inside. Two men on a raised platform to your right man a large, water-cooled automatic weapon.

You decide to enter the dugout, bumming a cig off of a lingering private outside the door.

Only halfway through do you realize you don't smoke.

The interior of the dugout is well built, the walls lined with wood and tall enough to stand. It seems to take the shape of a makeshift pub. Soldiers mill around tables in the middle of the dirt floor, while up against the wall stands a cabinet behind a counter made out of stacked crates. A curious, handlebar mustached man leans against the counter, presumably the bartender.

You pass the cigarette to Hamsfield, who accepts it greatfully.
