You are Sonia Reynard, Rookie Corvette Pilot for the House of Jarik-Dremine and you are preparing for what will be your third combat mission.
Your current ship is a Houses Standard Corvette armed with 2 Phase cannon turrets that cover the Forward arc, it can hit anything that's within 75 degrees off center. Your wingman Mike pilots a similar ship while the third pilot in your squad Alex has a Daggar Class.
Together you make up the third squad of a 12 ship squadron.
Your commanding officer is Knight Lt Dayton who leads units into battle from the bridge of a Light Cruiser.

It's been a few days since the completion of your previous mission and repairs are mostly finished. With the help of some engineers that had been reserved to work on the rest of your squadron the old Daggar belonging to your wingman Alex now has an operational Torpedo launcher again. Knight Lt Dayton has transferred a handfull of Torps to the ship with instructions they be used sparingly.
When poking around the docks during loading you notice the production date on the casings.
2987 Terran, 50 year shelf life outside of stasis storage. Wtf? These warheads are older than some Houses. You guess stasis fields really do work as advertised.

It's been 2 day since your boxing match against a Dro'all Chief Mechanic. Between that and the boarding action you took part in on your last mission the rest of the squadron are starting to regard you as some kind of would-be crusader.

Each day more new recruits show up on the station ready to be assigned to a training squadron and ship. Quite the change from a week ago when there were more ships than crews. Word has it the shipyards are stepping up production but until then all available ship berths are refurbishing older vessels removed from storage. One way or another you want a new ship.

Until then you've used the spare time to relocate to a set of quarters aboard your corvette. It doesnt have a name but few training ships do, being relagated to obscurity for the most part. At Chief Kavos' insistance you've spent the better part of the past day familiarizing yourself with the ship interior. In an emergency you could find your way to most parts of the ship, including the escape pods.

At 1600 hours you recieve a message to report to the squadron briefing room in 2 hours time.

    >Is there anything you'd like to do before going to the Briefing?

Are we any good at calculating jumps? If so, we might help our navigator study. If not, see how the mechanic we fought against is doing.

    >Are we any good at calculating jumps?
You are not. Most navigators study for 3 years before being assigned to a ship, though some wonderkids have been known to learn everything within a few months. Calculation can be a bit tricky at times, though this is also dependant upon how complex the navigation computer is.

    >see how the mechanic we fought against is doing.

You look up the mechanic Ahani Daska from the station registry and put in a call. The Dro'all on the other end is fairly beligerant in answering the call.
"I told you I already fixed the ship in Beth eight, what do you want?! Oh its you."
You ask her how she er... he is doing.
"You're not calling to gloat? Huh, didnt expect that. I'm doing okay, other than feeling messed up by the hormone swings. Taking a few days off now that your ship is fixed. Dont get it blown up on your next deployment. If you've already gotten it blown up just call maintenence, I dont want to hear about it right now.
Dont think about getting off the hook from that next match a few months from now. I've already called you out for a rematch, dont think any promotions will prevent it. Look i've got to get back to bed I'm tired as hell."

After wishing him well you hang up and head on to the Briefing room.

You CO is waiting behind the podium when you arrive, half of the squadron already present, and it isnt long before the others appear.

"Welcome everyone, this is going to be your first mission briefing for some of you. Let me assure you you havent been missing much." He presses a button and the display behind him lights up with a starmap. Several systems are lit up in red wih numbers next to them.

"Pirate raids are still increasing across the board. The smaller scale raids like the one we were first assigned to deal with are starting to decrease as system defenses are mobilized and getting more experience. Instead the pirate groups are switching to two different tactics, larger scale raids and attacks on shipping. It's because of this that all civilian FTL traffic are now being encouraged to form up into convoys. With convoy fleets we can concentrate our forces rather than spreading them out to jump at shadows. This isnt new, it happens whenever the big a Pirate bands come out of hiding so they're also used to this. For the time being our squadron is being put on convoy escort duty. This will probably last until another training squadron is ready."

The next image on the display shows a planet surrounded with orbital platforms, the same one you visited on your first mission. "A number of Large convoys are being formed up at Loran Two because of its importance as a trading hub. We will have starfighter support on this mission and backup from other squadrons, so we're not doing this alone. Questions?"

    >Do we have any idea what kind of equipment the pirates have?

"The Pirates seem to mostly be using ship in the corvette to light cruiser range, nothing overly crazy. The largest ships we're expected to run into are Kavarian battlecruisers but we should be able to out maneuver those. Light Carriers are another possibility, hence our starfighter support. I'm not going to lie to you, most of our corvettes are near the bottom of the heap in terms of firepower which is why we deploy en mass."

    >Anything we should know about the ships we'll be escorting? Dangerous cargo or something that could be a primary target for the bad guys?
"We're not provided with shipping manifests unfortunately. Most ships will likely be Cargo Frigates, Kavarian Y type Freighters or other bulk carriers. In my experience they'll try to disable the Y types first but their shields are pritty strong. They could give up and go for the frigates if that doesnt work. Most of the convoy will have overlaping fields of fire, dont get too close."

"Moving on to our next topic, I'm sure all of you are anxious to get your hands on some new hardware what with all of the other recruits pouring onto the station. Rest assured that You will be getting new ships eventually. Towards that end I'll be introducing you to our requisition system.

Each pilot will be alotted a number of requisition points for the completion of missions in their tour. These can be used to aquire ships and equipment for use in service with your House. These cant be used to purchase equipment for personal use, you WILL be arrested if you try. The baseline allotment is 500 RP per mission, so simply not getting killed will help you a lot. As things stand we recieved a bonus for each of our deployments so far. Right now you all have about 2,000 RP. I'm sending you a rough list of some ship classes and equipment you can purchase, this is by no means final. You are under no pressure to spend it all now and you probably shouldnt. Some equipment like shield upgades cant be moved to a new ship and you cant trade back you training ship."

Nuclear warheads are innefficent in space with much of their energy radiating away from their target. Even shaped nuclear warheads have similar problems. Torpedo weapons are constructed to release most of their energy into the point of impact and scatter less harmful radiation the way nukes do. They are sometimes referred to as Low radiation warheads. Nukes are cheap and easy to spam targets with by comparison.

"Remember, if you decide to it's possible to hang on to your training ship when you are transferred to a new squadron. Its certainly not new, it happens all the time. Think of it as 'first one is free.' Take your time and decide for yourself what ships you'd like to get later. You'll recieve a more comprehensive list later, as we dont have time to upgrade any of our ships before we depart. I just want you to all be aware of it.

You stop by the small barracks onboard after the crew is loaded and the ship is locked down. You ask if any of them had taken part in the cruise liner boarding action.

"Just a couple of us." One private speaks up. "It was mostly a mop up and negotiation action by the time we got there. I didnt get to see a thing, I just helped move some passengers around until we could get them out of there. I heard the standoff on the bridge was pritty crazy though."

At 0300 the next morning you undock from the station. With considerably less trouble this time you note, having learned your lessions from the other outings. Someone in first flight runs into something though, as you see shields sparking. Hard to say what without asking and embarassing them further. With your luck you'd make a joke just in time to run into someone else.

The Knight's voice blasts out over the com frequency.
"Rise and shine, we're on escort today people! Take some stims if you need them it could be a long day. Remember you have all been assigned an experienced boarding team this time around just in case we need to retake some of the freighters we'll be escorting. Or capture an enemy ship but that could turn into an adventure of its own. Side note before we jump; We're getting strange reports of ghost ships and derilicts that dont match with the piracy reports. Stay on your toes."

You revert to real space more or less where you need to be, back in the Loran system again. Linda exhales in relief.
A large to midsize convoy is forming up around Loran II. Everything from the brick like Kavarian Y-Type freighters to the miniscule forms of the smaller FTL capable yachts. Rovinar freight Tenders are positioned at strateigic points ready to threaten anyone getting too close. There are other civilian ships from other Factions present but they are by far in the minority.
In the few minutes it takes for the squadron to approach and move into the designated position the convoy size doubles to more than 100 ships.

Ten minutes later a 1,600m long Carrier and a pair of Light Cruisers take up position at the head of the formation.
"This is Baron Archivald to all civilian ships in system, this convoy is departing. Anyone not already registered is advised to make use of tomorrows convoy at 0800 local time. Escorts prepare for jump. You will recieve telemetry shortly."

As the ships move out of orbit the Baron begins talking to the various commanders over the Navy tac frequency.
"All Knights, Men at Arms and your charges, our flight plan has us pass through one uninhabited system and one deep space realignment point. Those of us escorting the forward half of the fleet will be jumping in first incase someone is waiting to take a crack at the freighters. If someone is you have to tie them up long enough for my Carrier and the rest of the convoy to arrive. I have some torpedo bombers so once the carrier deploys its fighters consider it game over for anyone against us."

As one three corvette squadrons accelerate and make the jump.
    >> That slow typing guy !!cAsGzl185mF 01/31/12(Tue)17:12 No.17752405
    >>17752286
When your jump ends you're in nearly perfect formation.
"Holy crap, that was an accurate jump!" You say to Linda.
She frowns slightly. "That wasnt me, the jump data was sent to us pre calculated to hold formation. Only the newer or larger ship have that kind of accuracy."

"I hate to break this up." says the Chief. "But we have enemy contacts."

"How many?" You ask, zooming in your display.
    You sensors officer speaks up.
"We're looking at an assortment of modified Frigates, corvettes and cruisers making up the bulk of them, along with one very badly beaten looking Vengance type cruiser."

When you spot the vessel you dont even have time to ask if its the same ship from your first mission before Alex calls out on squadron frequency, "Dibs on that cruiser."

"Hold formation." Orders Dayton. "We're detecting Republic starships near the front of their fleet. We're still outside weapons range."

When you pan your display across the enemy fleet's center you see what look to be about ten round vessels of different sizes. "Republic mercenaries." Kavos concludes "Not good."

    >>17752405
"One Light cruiser, one carrier, four Frigates and four missile boats." confirms sensors.

Kavos points to the shining white barrel shaped cruiser at the center of the formation. "That light cruiser is our biggest threat. It has a spinal mounted plasma cannon that could cripple us in one shot, and enough light phase cannons to rapid fire them like a gatling gun. Then there's the missile boats, they each mass less than half of us but they have 16 nuclear missile launchers. They're nothing but a luncher platform with engines and shields."
Your CO comes to the same conclusion.

"This is Knight Lieutenant Dayton to all Knights, reccomend we take down that Jug of a Cruiser first. The rest of our Corvettes can melee."
"Sounds good. I sure hope that Carrier gets here soon though."

Dayton switches back to squadron channel after.
"Everyone break by flights and engage at will. Remember to call for help and cover your squadmates."

"Mike, Alex let's stay in formation with the others. We wont stand out as much." You punch the throttle, accelerating towards the enemy fleet but careful not to out pace the others. Three Light cruisers, one belonging to the Lieutenant, push out ahead swinging into a delta formation.

"Please tell me we're headed for that Vengance. I've gotta pay him back for that hole he punched in my hull." Presses Alex.
"Missile Boats first, we have to kill them or they'll spam the entire battlefield with nukes."
    "...fine."

Orange beams and missiles fill the space between the two fleets, the beams unable to focus at long range. A Couple of shots graze your shield but do little damage. You look over your shoulder at the Chief. "Why cant the phase cannon focus from this far out? I thought most laser beams and such are suppsed to be able to fire insanely far in space."

As you cross the 100,000km threshold the beam weapon hits start to become more noticeable. Nuclear missiles begin to detonate on the forward shields of the ships in formation. The Republic Cruiser fires its plasma weapon for the first time in the engagement. A tight blue beam hits one of your allies light Cruisers, punching through the shield and burning a line in it's hull. Flame pours out of the damaged section for a few seconds but the ship doesnt give any indication it took serious damage.
"Launching SP Torpedoes!" announces LT Dayton. As a pair of projectiles rocket out from his ship riding blue-white tails. The other cruisers fire their more conventional torps. The enemy cruiser changes course, realising they'd been targeted, and hides behind an ugly modified Frigate. The SP torps pass through the Frigate's shield is it it weren't there, shredding the front half of the ship. The other four Torps slam into the remains of the vessel scattering wreckage in every direction.

"All hands brace for weapons fire." Kavos calmly says over the intercom before a pair of missiles hit your shield rocking your corvette.

"Sonia, should I use my torps now or save them for the cruisers?" Asks Alex.

    >Okay that took way longer to write than it should have.

"Hold the Torps for a minute." You tell him while the three of you bear down on a Missile Boat. The smaller ship is surprisingly nimble despite being a wheel of missile launchers. Your and Alex's fire only manage to damage its shield while Mike's cuts through its hull, blasting several launchers free before it explodes.
    "One down." He calls out.

Flying through the debris cloud you swing your ship around and crank the throttle to maximum to kill your momentum. The invisible force of tractor and repulsor beams push and pull agaisnt friend and foe alike, trying to bring the ships down to more resonable speeds for close combat. Your gunners dont cease fire, shooting at anything they can land a hit on.

By the time you and your wingmen have come about you're pointed towards the center of the fight. A pair of friendly corvettes are blown open by explosions as enemy ships concentrate fire. The main enemy Cruiser is still dodging most of the fire from two of the Knights as the third's ship drifts through the fight, out of control. Enemy starfighters are beginning to fill the battlespace.

Baron Archivald's Carrier has reverted to realspace in the distance and is beginning to launch fighters.

"Aim for the Carrier!" You tell the others. "If we take it out their fighters wont be harassing us through the rest of the fight."
The enemy Carrier is made up of a forward spherical section with a long spar running behind it. Even as you close on it more Fighters are launching from drop days running the length of the spar. Your phase cannon fire forces it to cease launch operations and raise it's shields. A Torpedo fired by Alex manages to squeak by before the shields go up, impacting the large fusion drive at the end tip of the spar.
The rest of your phase cannon fire has little effect against the shields but as long as they're up the ship wont be launching more fighters.

As you and your wingmen begin to swing around for another pass your sensor officer speaks up. "Detecting secondary explosions from the carrier. One of their reactors has lit off."

When the ship comes into view you see what he's talking about. The sublight drive has exploded, you must have just missed the flash. As you watch the shields around the launch bays go down and the forward sphere begins to seperate from the spar. After getting clear the spherical section lights up it's own drives and makes a run for it.

Your weapons fire burns holes in the abandoned section until it finally explodes, ripped apart by the remaining munitions aboard.

    >what exactly would starships be good for in a situation like this
Most light starships from Cruisers on down are able to act as general frontline ships. Some are better at it than others. Corvettes are cheap to mass produce, have the most basic equipment and are used as a stopgap most of the time, but they are faster and more agile. The Dominion uses more corvettes than anyone else. Frigates are the real jack of all trades and can be modified to do anything. Cruisers carry some of the heavier weapons but also have Marines, sometimes fighters.

    >Would we need to train their pilots as well?
When you aquire a ship through requisition it becomes your primary vessel. You command the new ship and some (or most) of your old ship's crew are transferred. In the case of requisitioning your next ship the old one you'd be leaving would be transferred back to a training squadron of your House. You arent so much buying ships but paying for permission to use better stuff that belongs to your House.

    >>17765823
    >Starfighters
Yes, they lack FTL of their own and must be brought along by a carrier.
Corvettes do not normally carry fighters but they can be modified to do so at the cost of other equipment or space. Frigates can be used as pocket carriers with anywhere from 6 on a normal one to two dozen if it was modified just for that purpose. Most Factions have dedicated Carriers for large scale battles able to carry more than 100.

You spot the smoky white tell tale sign of missiles headed for you, not just from one direction but several.
    "Incoming missile volley!"
    "Scatter!" You yell out.
You and your wingmen pull away in different directions rolling to the side and trying to avoid the cloud of missile fire. Six nuclear missiles detonate on your shield droping it below one quarter but few of the blasts overlap.

"Where are theose missiles comining from?" You ask, quickly glancing over at the sensor operator.
"The starfighters that had already launched are harassing everyone." He tells you.
On your display you can see another friendly corvette take fire from more of the enemy fighters. Two of them launch a Torpedo each before breaking off and running.

"Son of a bitch they can carry Torpedoes?!"

Your gunners take potshots at some of the small craft but most of their shots miss. Thankfully it only takes one solid hit to remove them. Without their Carrier to rearm the fighters longevity in battle will be short.

"Mike, Alex, do either of you see that Cruiser?" You ask them.
"Which one?" asks Mike sounding confused. "Oh shi- that was close."
A large explosion lights up the center of the battlespace as the reactors on some ship go super critical, distracting most of the enemies for a minute.
"I found it." reports Alex. "It's near the edge of the battle and might be getting ready to run. It still looks pritty beat up."

"Everybody full burn." you instruct them "just watch your shields, there's still fighters around."

You rocket through the battlefield, narrowly avoiding a few wrecked ship hulls and swinging close enough to an allied ship for your gunners to put some fire into an enemy Frigate harassing it. You keep going and before long have spotted Mike and Alex. The Cruiser spots the three of you incoming and fires an alphs strike at the closest of you, Mike, before turning to run. Your wingman's corvette slows after taking half of the hits.

The first Torp impacts the aft shield on the Cruiser damaging it. The next one lowers it close to failure and some of your cannon weapon fire penetrates to tear through an engine. ಠ_ಠ
    No, nevermind.

Alex and Mike close in and launch their own shuttles. Together you tractor beam the ship until its spin is under control. As the shuttles close in a point defense gun pops out from the hull and sprays particle beam fire. You and Alex both blast the turret before it can do too much damage but Mike's shuttle is forced back with most of its side torn open.

The remaining assault shuttles face no more external resistance, docking to seperate airlocks and letting the Marines storm the interior.
"Knight Lt Dayton to all ships, enemy forces are in full retreat, begin rescue and recovery operations."

Baron Archivald's voice was the next over the general channel.
"We have a limited time table people. I set aside a few empty transports large enough to carry damaged corvettes or Frigates but we dont have all day. The remaining convoy escorts will jump in 30 minutes along with the convoy. We'll send a salvage team out to this area in a few hours."

"Sir could we deploy some sensor beacons to keep an eye on things until then?" Asks the Lt.
"I'm afraid not, we're getting some long range jamming."

Hearing this you nervously watch the mission timer count down and wait for the Marines to report back.

"We've taken control of the ship. Casulties were light. Most of the crew were dead and few of the survivors wanted to surrender. We have 13 prisoners ready for transfer back to the ship."

"Does it look like there's any way to salvage the ship?"
    You ask the Marine.

"Honestly this thing is a wreck but it might be possible. Sublight drives are toast, we'd need one or two of the ships to tow us up to speed to jump. *IF* the drive core holds. They're tough things but I'll only trust them so far. If you want to try it we'll need an engineering team. My intrusion experts are cracking the databanks on the ship now to pull intel."

It's only on the sublight journey there that you find out one of the ships from second flight were lost along with most of the crew. Lt Dayton's ship is also sporting some rather serious gashes in the outer armor.

"Mike what's your ship status?" You ask.
"Five confirmed dead." he answers sounding sullen. "They're still identifying the remains of the Marines killed on my ship's shuttle when it was hit. Particle beam shot pierced the troop compartment. The hull breach on my ship isnt too bad, it'll just take time to fix and mount a new turret."

For being your first real multi-ship battle things could have gone much worse you conclude. The ship to ship fighting wasnt so much different from before but you gained a new respect for the strengths and weaknesses of starfighters and their carriers. With any luck you'll keep that in mind later.

After a quick check by the dock engineers you're directed to take up a holding position alongside the other ships that have completed repairs. All crews are ordered to get some rest while there is some downtime.

-Set up training regiment for ourselves
-File that claim on the cruiser
-Start working on the report we have to do, the sooner we have that out of the way, the better.

    /Mission end

Feel free to post anything you'd like to do aboard ship while you await your next deployment. It will be added to the start of the next thread.
Questions, comments, I'll try to answer them.

Seriously though, he said he'd try to run Void quest again in January but school work must have caught up with him.

    >Yeah... I've been retarded busy. I really want to run it but I just can't find the time. It would be easier if I could just drop a post once or twice a day in a thread that stays around, but finding an 8 hour block of time that I can put aside is almost impossible.

    >I really don't mean to leave you guys hanging, if you have suggestions I would be open to hearing them.

Create a flag symbol for Sonia Reynard

I propose this but I'm going to bed now. Looking forward to the next thread.

Well there's this from online. I admit to having very limited knowledge about how a coat of arms is determined.
