    366 KB Fist of Shadow Quest 8 Student !!+u5zzp0LPDj 04/30/12(Mon)12:23 No.18921230
    We are LIVE, everybody!

For those of you not in the know, this is FIST OF SHADOW QUEST, a martial arts/magical assassin quest to find your master in a strange world you know nothing about. You are Shun, apprentice of Sifu Tong, master of the ancient art of assassination – The Fist of Shadow. It’s a style that emphasizes quick, focused movements to quickly eliminate an enemy and use his force against him.

The old threads are here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Fist%20of%20Shadow
It’s getting a little longer, but it shouldn’t take too long to read if you’re interested!

Last time, we checked out the bounty office to pick up some extra cash. After a quick stalking, we kidnapped a bard responsible for fucking entirely too many women and brought him to justice, earning us a cool 5000 gold. The day was still young, so we went after Tracker Johnny, leader of the Manhunters, a rogue group of bounty hunters. We interrogated/tortured one of them who had been captured, and went to their base in the dead of night. We knocked some out, killed a few, and nabbed Johnny. Interestingly, we found a wanted poster of Sifu Tong…

Here's a list of techniques that you know and can learn later on: http://pastebin.com/QrrNkwWn
Feel free to reference it whenever.

Inventory: 5 wooden shurikens, 1 dose of Heaven Berries, 1117 gp (4000 in the bank), a pendant of Ward Fear, 1 emerald gem, two medical kits, about ten feet of rope, and a compass.

A storm looms over the quiet forest.

The dark-skinned teenager is sick of this. He’s been training for his whole life, and what does he know? The basics! His father refuses to teach him anymore. Why!? The storm brewing outside is nothing compared to the storm brewing in the boy. It’s been like this for years- squeezing every bit of training from Sifu, like drawing water from a rock. Back against the wall of his home, he glares into the woods. His mentor is bound to return soon from hunting.

True enough, a tall man with broad shoulders and a shock of red hair appears from the forest. His smile turns to a concerned frown when he sees his son.

    “Shun? Is something wrong?”

Face scrunching up, the teen says, “Yes.”

“What?” A short silence. The dark one blinks, and whispers something. “What was that, Shun?”

He erupts, “Why do you hold me back?!” Taken aback by this sudden outburst, the teacher begins to open his mouth, but is interrupted, “Every time I want you to teach me something, you tell me no, you don’t want me walking this path, no, you don’t want me to get hurt.” His face quakes in rage as he spills out what he’s been holding back, “That’s not good enough anymore!” Stonefaced, the man looks at the ground. “You’ve got nothing to say?!”
    >> Student !!+u5zzp0LPDj 04/30/12(Mon)12:43 No.18921403
He sadly looks back up at his only child as thunder booms, and replies, “You’re right, Shun. I have been holding you back. I’ve been coddling you. I don’t want you to become a Fist of Shadow. It’s a hard, long, thankless road full of danger. Are you really sure about this?” The boy’s intense, steely stare is all the answer he needs. “Of course you are. You’re always sure.” The old man sighs. “I’m sorry, Shun. From now on, I’ll train you like you were my apprentice, not my son.” Unsatisfied at these words because they are, in fact, only words, Shun glares.

But Tong was true to his words. From that day on, the boy’s life only got harder and harder, and never let up.

Shaking your head of the memory, your attention returns to the weight on your back. Tracker Johnny. He knows something about Sifu Tong, and he’s *going* to tell you, one way or another. You’ve got him tied up securely on the wet surface of the roof, a drizzle wetting your cloak. You’ve got a couple of hours until morning, which is a couple of hours to do whatever you want to this bastard to get the information you’ve desperately needed since that night you fled your home.

This isn’t going to be comfortable for Johnny.

You throw the limb body hung over your shoulders onto the cold, unforgiving steel and kick him. “Wake up.” He rolls around in pain, and looks up at you blearily, silent. You grin. “I’ve got a few questions for you before I haul you back to the bounty office, and I'd be very pleased if you would answer them.”

He squints at you and scowls, “Fuck you, lawman. You ain’t getting shit outta me.” Looks like he wants to do this the hard way.

The scarred man below you laughs. “What, him? You wanna bring him to justice, too, kiddo?” Johnny chuckles, “I’m not gonna tell you who wanted him dead, but I will tell you he had a damn good reason to. The bastard set a whole village on fire because they killed his apprentice. All those people, all those lives… gone. Because of one man.” A grin slides onto his face. “Is it any wonder someone would want a monster like that dead?” W… what? What!?

A frown crosses your face. “Not just yet. You’d better tell me who gave the bounty or I'll start cutting off fingers."

He has to be lying about something. “Is that the only thing he’s hunted for? Give me all the leads that you’ve found."

“As far as I know, yeah, that is. Seems like enough reason to me. And I know you’re thinking ‘if he destroyed a whole village, then why did the Manhunters go after him and not some random shmuck?’” He rolls his head to try and get a little more comfortable. “Well, kid, let me just say that we’re good at tracking people. The best, I’d say. And my employer doesn’t want the man alive. With your regular bounties, as you know, you get paid more for bringing in a warm body. We don’t get paid shit if he’s alive.”

You aren’t sure what to make of that. “What about your loot? Where is it?”

He looks at you incredulously. “What, you’re gonna turn me in for money and steal everything we’ve earned?”

“It’s not like you’re gonna need it.”

He pauses. “Fair enough. There’s a safe downstairs. Combination’s 5-3-0-9. Are you done here? These ropes are starting to chafe.”

“No, I’m not. Who put out the hit, Johnny?”

“I told you, I ain’t saying-“ Before he can finish his sentence, you break his pinky finger. Off. You flick it back at the screaming man.

    “Who, Johnny?”

“Fuck you! Fuck you, I’ve had worse done to me, you pig fuck!”

Sighing, you get to work…

A couple of minutes later, you’ve broken him. He screams, blood pouring from a socket where his eye used to be. “Fuck! It was… Master Richards! Vic Richards! His sister and mother lived in that village! Just stop! Stop!”

You’re done here. “Nice of you to not make this go more messy than it should. I feel a little bad about doing that." His eyes are glazed over, passed out. He can’t hear you anymore. You check his bindings and stuff his papers into your bag. Looking over the city, the clouds break and you see the horizon growing purple, signaling the rise of the Shard. It’s been a long night. Picking him up, you head downstairs and enter his office. It’s got a fairly nice wooden desk with some cabinets lining the walls. Papers are strewn around the floor. You open up the safe underneath the desk. 5000 gold. Not bad.

Everyone else’s bound tightly. They’ll probably wake up soon. It’s time to get going. Heading back to the bounty office as the sky turns a fiery orange, you dump off Johnny and tell the officer that the rest of the men are back at the base. He groggily gives you 12,400 gold for your work. An excellent haul. You’re getting tired, so you head back to Ingrid’s Inn. She looks surprised to see you stumbling into her musky bar and greets you.

You grumble a greeting back and head to your room, exhausted.

You awaken from your stupor. Looking outside, everyone’s busily going about their day. Must be the afternoon. Yawning, you do your daily exercises and meditations. Leafing through Sifu’s notebook, you decide that the Shadowstalk stance should be the next step. Putting on your clothes, you head downstairs, where Ingrid is tending to a half-full bar.

“Look who finally showed up!” She flashes a brilliant smile at you. Grinning back at her, you take a seat and order some grub. You two make some small talk for a few minutes while you eat. Midway through, a question pops into your head.

“Ingrid, do you know where I could buy some light armor?” You ask quizzically.

Cleaning a glass, a look of contemplation crosses her face. “Hmm. Depends. You could either get some enchanted stuff at the Arcane Schools, or you could try and get some augmented armor from the Daedalus boys.” She giggles. “Assuming you don’t want typical leather, of course.”

Does this setting have things like bank checks? I assume they do. It would better to pay that way than hauling king's ransom worth of dosh.

Since we are heading towards workshops we should take on that Shard job too. I bet the leads for that job would take us there anyway.

You’ve heard a lot about the Workshops, but… “Er. What is it exactly that the Workshops *do*?”

Brown hair bobbing as she dives underneath the counter to get some more water for you, she says, “Lots of things! They study the Shards to find out what we can do with them. Like, mechanically speaking. Thanks to them, we’ve got this handy refrigerator down here.” She pats something underneath the counter. “Keeps things cool. They make things a lot easier for us normal folks. Of course, they’ve made a few weapons and mechanical armor, too.” Her eyes dart around for a second, and she leans in and whispers, “I’ve heard they’re making a flying machine, too.” Wait, something that can fly? Only magic can do something like that.

“Interesting. Do you know if their armor is better than something I could get from the Arcane Schools?”

She shrugs. “I dunno. I’ve never really needed to know. If I had to guess, though, I’d say that what they’ve got would protect you from damage better, and hell, I’ve heard that they’ve made some crazy awesome gloves. Magical armor would probably be a little quieter to move around in, since it doesn’t have the mechanical do-dads, and you could probably grab some nice enchantments if you’ve got the money. But, again, I’m just guessing.” It makes sense, from a logical view.

You thank Ingrid and pay for your lunch, then you hit the busy streets.

Aside from the damp cobblestone, the skies show no evidence of last night’s storm. Interesting. Walking through the crowded roads, you head back to the bounty office to turn in your papers on Johnny. Asking about Jameson, the officer tells you that all he knows is what’s on the bounty paper. Good thing you were heading to the Workshops anyway. Thanking him, you head for the bank and deposit 17,514 gold, leaving you with 1000 leftover.

Facing the massive metal complex of the Daedalus Workshops, you head into the smog, cloak drifting behind you. A big, square building seems to be the only way in, so you open the gleaming metal door and enter.

The room is surprisingly bare. The walls are dull steel, completely unadorned. There are a few chairs up against the wall, and a round desk with a cute woman behind it. There’s a door behind her with a large “WORKERS ONLY” sign posted on it. The woman looks up from her book, peering over her glasses at you. You walk over to her and greet her.

“Hello. What do you need?” She’s a blunt one, isn’t she?

    “No.”

You’re a little taken aback at how firm that was. “Um, why not?”

Her brows crease. “Because those hoity-toity mages think that our tech is beneath them, that’s why. The short-sighted fools.” Well, hell. That’s not good. “I’ve got an idea of what you want. Chest armor capable of withstanding ballistic fire while being flexible enough to move. Probably’ll need a multitude of sliding scales… Arm guards similar… Leg armor that can absorb large amounts of shock… I can’t help you with silent boots, I’m afraid. Everything else should be relatively quiet, but it won’t be as effective as heavy armor.” You blink at her, not quite sure what she just said. “But you seem to lack the need for that. “So I could wear a cloak over it.”

“Yes. We could make an outfit that looks very similar to yours, if you want. It’ll just be a bit bulkier.” Well, you could keep this nice fashion statement.

“And helmets? You don't do that?”

She stares at you, bored. “Our medium armor can withstand over a thousand mace hits before being significantly impaired. She nods, and you spend the next few minutes standing silently as she extends a tape measure over every part of your body. She doesn’t even bother to make small talk. When she finishes measuring and noting everything, the rolls the tape measure up. “By the way, which way to Site X?”

She sits back down in her chair and says, “Out the door behind me, then look left. You can’t miss it.” You thank her for her time as she returns to her book. “Mhm.” Walking past her, you open the door, and a collection of steel buildings belching steam and smoke greet you. Everything smells vaguely acidic and burnt. Looking to your left, you see the largest building, with a big ‘X’ painted on it. That’s probably it.

Walking inside, you see a massively open space with desks and equipment everywhere. Some people in coats and goggles inspect various things and tinker with… other things. Some of it glows with the same shine as the Shard you had once. Asking around, you’re pointed to Doctor Luminox over in the corner, who looks like he’s fiddling with… some sort of arm?

Walking up to him, you greet him. He turns to you, and you’re more than a little surprised to see that he’s missing his left arm. Oh, so that’s what he’s working on. A big white beard pops out of a wide, jolly face.

“Why hello there, child! How are you?” He’s awfully… cheery compared to the woman you met earlier.

    >> Student !!+u5zzp0LPDj 04/30/12(Mon)18:26:34 No.18924943
You’re still curious. “So what is it that Shards do, exactly?”

Luminox laughs as you turn a corner and hear a muffled explosion in the background. “Well, they are by far the greatest source of energy in the world. A cubic centimeter of material could power one of our automobiles for well over a hundred years! The applications are astounding!” he grumbles a bit when he says, “And they’re magical, too.” Interesting. Unfortunate that he won’t expand upon that, but there are other people you can question for that.

You make small talk with the doctor as you come up to a building that looks far more homey than the other buildings. Going inside, you’re almost surprised to see the rug lining the hallways. Walking down the hall, which seems to be lit by… bulbs? Strange. You come to a door, which Luminox opens with a key from his pocket. “This is the place, Shun. If you’ve got any questions, don’t hesitate to stop by! It’s been a pleasure speaking with you!” You say goodbye, and with a ‘wahaha’, he briskly heads back to work.

The room… is incredibly neat. Everything’s perfectly lined up, and by ‘everything’, you mean the bed and the desk that occupy the otherwise spartan room. It’s a little eerie.

Well, see if there is anything on the desk, in the desk, taped under the desk, behind the desk and so on. Check for bookshelves and see if there are any slips of paper hidden between pages of books or if there are any journals.

Check under the bed, under the mattress, flip the mattress over and slice it open to check if anything is hidden inside it.

We'll lets hope this is easy and check out the obvious places first. First go over the desk carefully and check for any hidden compartments then go thoroughly through the bed. If that doens't help I guess we have to start looking for loose floorboards and the walls.

    >> Student !!+u5zzp0LPDj 04/30/12(Mon)18:34:59 No.18925038
You begin by ruffling through the desks. Completely empty. Checking the underside, knocking for secret compartments, you reveal nothing. Alright, maybe the bed. You look underneath it. Dammit! Hmmm. You slice it open with a shadow blade and pick through the bedding. Again, nothing. Shit.

Wait a second… something in the corner looks off. Kneeling down, you knock on the flooring. It’s hollow here. Cutting it open, you rip the wood off to reveal… a metal box! It looks like it needs a key, though. Which Jameson probably has. Fortunately, you don’t need a key to open up something as flimsy as this. Slicing it open, you find a map. It looks like it leads from Terec to… some unidentified place south of here entitled “Hell’s Gate.” Ominous. Looks like a long trek, too.

Looking at the paper, Doctor Luminox frowns heavily. “Oh no. Oh, no, no, no.”

    “What?”

“The Gateway to Hell is a vast, dangerous desert. Long ago, a massive Shard fell into it at such an angle that it crystallized miles and miles of landscape and horribly mutated everything that lives there. It’s… dangerous, to say the least, my boy. I’ve been there before on an expedition, the glow from the Shard reflects off of the crystals like a mockery of sunset. Massive scorpions crawl through the sands, the cacti are like forests, and don’t get me started on the Glassfolk…” The doctor shudders at the mere thought. “I’m afraid that if he’s headed there, then we’ll never see him again.”

Like perhaps a (very simple) map of the major geography and a description of major entities. But if it's too much work I guess the learn-as-we go that we've been doing has also worked well so far.

Thanking the doctor, you drop off your clothes at the front desk so they can use it to cover your armor. You head to the bounty office and call it off. You try to give the officer your papers back, but he refuses, saying that you should hold onto them just in case. Giving him the map, since it was your only clue, you spend the rest of the night exploring Terec. It seems to be divided into a few key areas: The Workshops on the east side, the Arcane Schools on the west, with various residential and commercial districts on the north and south. It looks like the closer you get to the center of the city, the fancier and more ornate the buildings get, turning from wood to marble, until you get to the very center, where four massive, gleaming marble towers pierce the sky, stretching up over a hundred feet. Asking around, you learn that those 4 towers contain the entirety of the Alchemist’s Guild, and that there’s one tower for each Master. Interesting. In the middle of that lies the tallest tower of all, a massive obsidian structure that dwarfs anything you’ve ever seen. You don’t have to guess to know whose tower that is.

You spend the next few days trying to learn the Shadowstalk. It’s a very detailed stance, and involves forming shadows around your hands and feet into gloves with innumerable tiny spikes on them. It’s about as hard as it sounds. On the seventh day, you manage to climb around Ingrid’s Inn (at night, of course) without needing to touch the ground. You’re pretty sure you’ve got it.
    >> Student !!+u5zzp0LPDj 04/30/12(Mon)20:11 No.18926211
The next morning, you pay Ingrid for breakfast and go to pick up your armor. The same woman as before curtly greets you and fetches your armor. It looks exactly like what you have now, but you can feel the small plates underneath it on the arms, legs, and chest. The mask covers your face perfectly, but you don’t want to walk around in that, so you store it in your bag. Thanking to woman, you go to the School of the Phoenix Storm to see just how well it works.

And does it work like a dream. It takes you a few minutes to deal with the weight, but when you do, you move exactly like you did before, and only you can hear the barely audible squeaks of the plates moving together. Most excellent.

After collecting a hundred gold for smashing some of Enkidu’s students around, you stand outside of his school, feeling like a new man. What are your plans?

You’ve still got enough gold leftover to go and get something enchanted. Probably. The Arcane Schools would be the best place to go for now.

Heading for the western portion of Terec, you spot a clothing store with a very fashionable dark blue scarf in the window. You could probably get that enchanted... heading inside, you inquire as to its cost. When you learn that it’s only 5 gold, you immediately buy it and wrap it around your neck. Heading outside, your scarf and cloak sway in the breeze while you make your way to the Schools.

Ah, there they are. In contrast to the steel cubes of the Workshops, the Schools are domes of all sizes, domes on domes on domes. You’re really not sure how they managed to do that with wood, but you don’t really understand magic, either. Going into what looks like the largest one and has the most people NOT in robes walking into it, you’re glad that you’re in what looks like a shop. All sorts of trinkets and do-dads fill the store. Heading to the front desk, a man with long, black sideburns greets you.

“Hello there! What services do you need on this splendifous day, sir?”

    Splendifous?

Unless you did that already and I missed that.

Also, can we get speed enchantment for a ring? I'd like it to be on a ring.

It will become relevant when we start journeying again. Right now, we are mostly using our fighting skills so speed would be the best.

    Right. Ring of speed then?
Or just get our boots enchanted.

I think I'm pretty cool with any of these enchantments. Seems legit enough not to buy sustenance for now. While I think a huge pile of cash is unlikely to do us much good in a bank without intrest rates (heh heh) let's just not spend _all_ our money on this spot. If a concensus is found for speed or whatever I'm fine with it. And as a personal favour. Please lets get the watch shall we?

Should we really be relying on enchantments? We need to be naturally proficient more than anything else. We have to be able to live perfectly as if we were ever stripped of these enchantments. The fundamental character must be strong, not all the swag he's got on top of him.

“Yeah, I’d like to buy the indestructible watch, please.”

“That’ll be one hundred thousand gold, sir!” Red tinges the edges of your vision as you feel pressure building up in your head. “Just joking! It’s just 500 gold.” You give him the money, and pull up your sleeve, putting the watch on. It fits pretty nicely. The time reads 4:35. After a quick bit of instruction, you learn how to read a clock properly. How interesting! “So you don’t want anything else, sir?”

He nods. “Of course!” You fill out the paperwork. 4000 gold. “I’ll be right back, sir.” He disappears for a few minutes, and comes back with a blue sash. “Your beautiful, speedy belt for going fast! I hope you enjoy it!” You grip it in between your hands and wrap it around your waist. As you do so, you feel… energetic. Like you need to run. Badly. You can’t wait to test this out.

“So how does this work?” the mage pulls out the same book again, grinning. "Well, if you don't want to explain magic, will you at least explain your relationship with the Daedalus Workshops?"

He shrugs and wipes his shoulder, as if to dust himself off. Sparks fly. “They’re tinkerers, plain and simple. They are like the children playing with building blocks, while we are THE MASTERS OF REALITY!” Dammit, he needs to stop. “They are beneath us. They WISH they could reach our level, but they can’t, so they play with their little machines.”
